CNTC lauds bold step of WSH, WCH

DIMAPUR, SEP 1 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has lauded Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) and Western Chakhesang Hoho (WCH) for taking a “bold and pragmatic” step” to deal with anti-social elements. CNTC said that their “dynamic leadership” in coming forward and requesting the commissioner of police to furnish names and other details of arrested criminals belonging to the two communities so that action could be taken against them as per their respective customary laws. According to CNTC, such bold and pragmatic steps set standards and reflects the vision of bridging the gap between different communities brought by anti-social elements within the Naga family. “This responsibility lies in all of us and has almost become an emergency and should be emulated by all others also,” CNTC stated.

Moderate tremor jolts Nagaland, NE states

DIMAPUR, SEP 1 (NPN): A ‘moderate’ quake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, jolted Nagaland during the early hours of Tuesday, around 2.30 a.m. According to USGS report, the epicentre was 111 km South East of Phek, in Myanmar. State disaster management officials said that no loss of life or property has been reported till the filing of this report. Meanwhile, another earthquake measuring 3.7 magnitude on the Richter scale was reported in Manipur on Monday. India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the quake was felt at 9.27 p.m. in border Ukhrul district and was at a depth of 50 km. The tremor, which lasted for several seconds, forced panicstricken people to run out of their homes in the night.

Petrol prices up

DIMAPUR, SEP 1 (NPN): After a day’s hiatus, stateowned oil marketing companies (OMCs) Tuesday increased price of petrol by 4-5 paise per litre. Diesel prices, however, have remained unchanged since July 30. According to IOCL website, petrol price in the national capital rose to Rs 82.08 per litre. After today’s rate revision, a litre of petrol in Dimapur and Kohima was retailing at Rs.87.37 and Rs.88.27 respectively. OMCs, however, reduced the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) by close to Rs 1,500 per kilo litre (kl) and kept the price of nonsubsidised cooking gas and auto gas unchanged from last month.

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): India’s GDP needs to rise annually at 8-8.5 per cent to create opportunities in the post COVID-19 era, and the country risks a decade of stagnating incomes and quality of life if urgent steps are not taken to spur growth, says a report. According to the report by McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), the country will have to undertake a slew of reform measures over the next 12-18 months with the aim of increasing productivity and creating jobs. Given the increasing urbanisation and population trends, there will be 90 million additional workers in search of non-farm jobs by 2030 and India will have to triple job creation to 12 million gainful non-farm jobs per year from the 4 million achieved between 2013 to 2018, it said. The report warns that lower growth of between 5.5 to 6 percent would help the economy absorb only about six million new workers, marking a decade of lost opportunity. The coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdown combined with an already slowing pre-COVID

From hotels to trade, electricity generation, manufacturing and construction, almost every segment of the Indian economy showed a sharp contraction during the first three months of the financial year. The only sector that posted positive growth was agriculture, at 3.4%. By all accounts, a quick recovery is unlikely in India, and it is only in the last three months of the year that growth is expected to return to positive territory. Cases continue to spike and lockdowns are ongoing in several areas. As a result, consumer demand, which determines 60% of GDP, is unlikely to return in a hurry as most people are stepping out only to buy essentials. India’s economy was already faltering when Covid-19 struck. Last year, unemployment touched a 45-year high and growth dipped to 4.7%, the lowest in six years. Output was shrinking as demand fell and banks were burdened by a mountain of debt.

Odd-Even system in India bids adieu to Pranab Mukherjee Dmu, Kma to continue NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (PTI): Bugles sounded the last post, soldiers clicked their heels and fired in the air and the small gathering, many in PPE suits, raised their hands in salute as India’s 13th president Pranab Mukherjee was cremated on Tuesday in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic. The nation bid farewell to ‘Citizen Mukherjee’, who was given a ceremonial send-off in accordance with COVID-19 protocol, with visors, face shields, masks and the number of people at the Lodhi Road crematorium strictly restricted. The tributes continued to pour in for the statesman, scholar and master political strategist, who stayed in public life for more than five decades as a long-time Congress leader and then as president, but only close family and friends were present at the funeral conducted with

full state honours. Mukherjee, 84, died on Monday at the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital following a 21-day battle with multiple ailments. He tested positive for COVID-19 when he was admitted to the hospital on August 10 and was operated the same day for removal of a brain clot. His son, former MP Abhijit Mukherjee, performed the last rites with

family and friends paying their last respects clad in personal protective gear. A hush fell over the crematorium as the coffin wrapped in tricolour made its way inside the complex. The air was solemn and fragrant with flowers. Earlier in the morning, Mukherjee’s mortal remains were taken in a flower bedecked white hearse van from the hospital to his home in 10 Rajaji Marg.

COVID hampers issuing NRC rejection

G U WA H AT I , S E P 1 (PTI): COVID-19 pandemic has affected the process for issuing rejection order to every person excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam even after the final document of citizens was published a year ago, the top NRC official said on Tuesday. NRC State Coordinator Hitesh Sarma told PTI that government officials and employees at the ground level are engaged in work related to the pandemic so they could not recheck the speaking order which describes the exact reason for exclusion. “The process for issuing rejection orders was intended to be started from today, but now it has to wait for the pandemic to subside”, Sarma said. Stating a rejection order has to be issued to each excluded person, he said, the order needs to have another order - speaking order - attached explaining the exact reason for exclusion from the final NRC. The rejection orders are crucial for the concerned rejected people. They will be able to appeal to the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) within 120 days only after receiving the rejection orders. When he scrutinised many of the speaking orders, Sarma said, discrepancies were noticed with many not written in the proper way and so he ordered a recheck. The final NRC was published on August 31 last year by excluding 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants. The process for upda-

tion of the NRC in Assam was conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court from 2013. The NRC state coordinator also informed that on Monday he held a video conference meeting with the district Deputy Commissioners (DCs) giving them a detailed briefing on how to recheck the speaking orders. On being pointed out about those excluded from the NRC were facing varied problems and are in tension with regard to their status as citizen of the country, the state NRC coordinator said, when the rejection orders are issued those disagreeing with the exclusion can challenge it in courts. Some of those excluded from the register said they were tensed as despite presenting requisite documents with the legacy data to establish their Indian citizenship, they were left out from the NRC. To ease the concerns of those excluded from NRC, the Union Home and External Affairs ministries after publication of NRC had stated that exclusion does not make a resident a “foreigner”, and that only Foreigners Tribunals and higher courts can decide on their Indian citizenship. Abu Latif Barbhuiya of Karimganj district who

hopes to go for Haj pilgrimage after the COVID19 pandemic ebbs said he failed to get passport as the local police is not issuing verification certificate after exclusion of his name from the NRC, whereas his family members are in. Another such person, Rinku Das, of Goalpara district is facing a lot of problem in buying a plot of land in his village as he cannot get it registered in his name as he is not in the National Register of Citizens. Not only him, but his brother, sister, son and nephew’s names are also excluded from the register when they hadsubmitted their father’s land deed of 1951. Bidhan Dey of Dhubri district said getting a groom for his daughter was becoming a cause of worry as marriage proposals were not coming in as her name was excluded from NRC despite names of all other family members were included. Romila Bodo, belonging to the indigenous ethnic Bodocommunity in Kokrajhar district aspires to join the state civil service, but is afraid that she will be rejected in police verification stage after they do not find her name in the National Register of Citizens. Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union

She also spoke on the activities in the community and village level, at health facility level, and the target beneficiaries. Henme also demonstrated on how to prepare ORS, how to make the local homemade ORS, and the administering of the Zinc tablets. The release informed that prior to the launching of IDCF, ORS and ZINC tablets were distributed to all the health units. It said ASHAs in all the blocks and villages to go for home visit during the two week and will culminate on September 14.

(AASU) and the Assam Public Works (APW) on Monday urged the Supreme Court for re-examination of the NRC published on that day last year. The final NRC has turned out to be a document reflecting the failure of both the state and the central government and the students’ organisation had appealed to the highest court for a “re-examination but we are still waiting fot the apexcourt’s directive in this regard”, AASU President Dipanka Nath and General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said in a statement. The students’ body had not rejected the final NRC, but”we were not satisfied with the results and there were flaws in the final document as it was not prepared according to the directives given by the Supreme Court”, the AASU leaders said. As soon as the final NRC was published, the BJPgovernment went on to violate the provisions of the Assam Accord by imposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) “a conspiracy to sabotage the NRC”, Nath and Gogoi alleged. The Assam Public Works (APW), a primary petitioner for the NRC in the Supreme Court, also claimed that the NRC has become an “absolute zero” due to the “conspiracy of the vested interests”. “The NRC in its current form cannot send back a single foreigner but will only lead to make foreigners Indian citizens. In one word, the NRC has boomeranged on the people of Assam”, APW President Aabhijeet Sarma told reporters here.

IMPHAL, Sep 1: Manipur government has suspended three sub-deputy collectors (SDCs) for their allegedly scam in implementation of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme in the state. An order of the state revenue department issued on Monday placed the three officers - Robert Okram (LA/SDC, Bishnupur), Salam Bimoljit Singh (LA/ SDC headquarter) DC’s office and Rahina Sahni, (LA/ SDC, Lilong) under suspension from their services. The order stated that disciplinary proceedings against them were contemplated for registering fake beneficiaries under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Under the scheme, all small and marginal farmers registered as beneficiarieswill get up to Rs 6,000 per year as minimum income support.

The 75,000-crore scheme aims to cover 125 million farmers, irrespective of the size of their landholding in India. It came into effect on December 1, 2018 and was launched by the Modi government. The list of the beneficiaries under the scheme is uploaded on the official website www.pmkisan.gov. in and it was alleged that fake beneficiaries were allegedly registered in Bishnupur district of the state. There were complaints of inclusion of fake names being uploaded after residents of some villages in Bishnupur district and villagers alleged that the names of beneficiaries uploaded in the website were not residents of the village. For instance, of the 221 farmers of Khoijuman village of the district listed as beneficiaries of the scheme, almost half of them were not residents of the village. The nodal officer of

PM-KISAN in Bishnupur district had however clarified that some beneficiaries belonging to other districts were wrongly entered under Bishnupur district. He claimed that the wrong inclusion of beneficiaries from other districts/ villages is due to the mismatch of beneficiaries in the web portal as there are similar village names at different districts of the state. The nodal officer had even tried to downplay the issue by stating that the director of the state agriculture department will be requested to remove the wrongly entered beneficiaries from the web portal. The clarification however failed to convince farmers of these villages who have been pressing the higher authority of the state government to take up necessary legal action against officers involved in the registration of fake beneficiaries of the scheme.

Shillong, Sep 1: The Meghalaya Tourism department will soon come out with a ‘Check into Nature App’ for online booking of tickets and contactless entry into tourist spots, three of which, including Ward’s Lake and Elephant Falls in the state capital and Nehru Park at Umiam (Barapani) were re-opened on a trial basis for local visitors from Tuesday. “Online ticketing and pre-booking of entry tickets is encouraged to avoid crowding at ticket counters while in the initial phase manual tickets can be issued to strictly enforce

social distancing and to not exceed the capacity as defined for each tourist destination,” Commissioner and Secretary, Tourism Dr. Vijay Kumar, said. “The tourism department is conscious of the impact COVID-19 on the growing tourism industry in the state and therefore understands that it is crucial to draw up a detailed SOP for a phase wise reopening of tourist destinations within the state that reassures all stakeholders involved,” the standard operating procedure (SOP) for tourist destinations issued by Kumar, stated. “The management of the tourist destination

shall constitute a COVID19 Management Team that shall be responsible for various activities like implementation of crowd management including social distancing, screening of tourists, hygiene and sanitation, awareness and training of staff and visitors as per these guidelines. Each team should appoint a coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating with the State Government,” the SOP said. “Based on the carrying capacity, tickets may be issued for defined timeslots (x number of visitors for a defined timeslot for example 1 hour). The dura-

tion of opening of the tourist destination should be published and defined,” it said. Further, the SOP stated that all tourists including drivers shall be strictly screened using thermal gun/scanner by designated trained person at entry by holding the scanner 3 to 15 cm away from the person’s forehead and anybody having fever (equal to more than 37.50C/99.50F), cold, cough, sore throat, difficulty in breathing shall not be allowed entry and should immediately report to the concerned authorities. Policy virus and economy

M

any independent economists had months back, predicted that India’s economy will worsen but instead, the government chose to describe them as “doomsayers”. On August 31,2020 the government’s own National Statistical Office proved the “doomsayers” right when it disclosed that the economy has contracted by 23.9% in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which ended in June, compared with the same quarter the previous year. A contraction of 23.9 per cent simply means that the total value of all goods and services fell by that proportion as compared the same three-month period last year. That’s the worst performance since the government began publishing quarterly gross domestic product figures in 1996. India has never recorded a drop in real GDP growth since 1979. There have been four ‘negative growth’ periods in India since Independence: late 1950s, 1965 (-2.6 percent), 1972 (-0.5 percent) and 1979 (-5.23 percent). COVID-19 could well push India into full-blown recession for the first time in 40 years into an L-shaped scenario. It is also the worst decline among the world’s major economies releasing GDP figures for that same quarter, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Even before coronavirus pandemic, India’s economy was slowing down with GDP growth at 4.2% despite the government’s hoopla that the economy will bounce back with a bang to propel India towards achieving a $ 5 trillion economy or Rs. 37,51,93,25,00,00,000 economy. In 2016, the government took 85% of paper money out of circulation as part of a demonetization policy that aimed to tamp corruption but also hurt small, cash-run businesses. The following year, a new goods and services tax scheme aimed to simplify the tax code but also hurt big manufacturers. Last year, unemployment hit a four-decade high. In late March, with cases of COVID-19 still low in India, the government announced the biggest lockdown in the world. Lakhs of impoverished laborers were stranded in urban centers and industrial zones with little to eat. The government scrambled to open shelters and food distribution centers for them, but not before dozens starved to death on roadsides. In May, the government began to ease lockdown restrictions and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Rs.20 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package, with aid earmarked for the poor. Despite this, manufacturing and consumer spending haven’t recovered enough. Unable to check the economic downslide, the union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman implied that it was due to the pandemic and an “act of God”. Reacting to this, former union finance minister and Congress leader P.C.Chidambaram asked “If the pandemic is an Act of God’, how do we describe the mismanagement of the economy during 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20. Before the pandemic struck India?” He maintained that even before the pandemic, India had eight quarters of declining growth which had nothing to do with the pandemic but with the policies of the Modi government. He said the corona only added to the problem. Further, economists warned that in the absence of increased government expenditure, which doesn’t appear to be on the horizon, further contractions could be on the cards in the upcoming quarters. If India records a contraction in the current quarter, it would have officially entered into a recession (defined as two consecutive quarters of contraction). The scenario should make the government realise that it is not corona but its policies and so it’s inevitable to go back to the drawing board.

DailyDevotion Destined To Be Holy …it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” —1 Peter 1:16 We must continually remind ourselves of the purpose of life. We are not destined to happiness, nor to health, but to holiness. Today we have far too many desires and interests, and our lives are being consumed and wasted by them. Many of them may be right, noble, and good, and may later be fulfilled, but in the meantime God must cause their importance to us to decrease. The only thing that truly matters is whether a person will accept the God who will make him holy. At all costs, a person must have the right relationship with God. Do I believe I need to be holy? Do I believe that God can come into me and make me holy? If through your preaching you convince me that I am unholy, I then resent your preaching. The preaching of the gospel awakens an intense resentment because it is designed to reveal my unholiness, but it also awakens an intense yearning and desire within me. God has only one intended destiny for mankind— holiness. His only goal is to produce saints. God is not some eternal blessing-machine for people to use, and He did not come to save us out of pity— He came to save us because He created us to be holy. Atonement through the Cross of Christ means that God can put me back into perfect oneness with Himself through the death of Jesus Christ, without a trace of anything coming between us any longer. Never tolerate, because of sympathy for yourself or for others, any practice that is not in keeping with a holy God. Holiness means absolute purity of your walk before God, the words coming from your mouth, and every thought in your mind— placing every detail of your life under the scrutiny of God Himself. Holiness is not simply what God gives me, but what God has given me that is being exhibited in my life.

Post-mortem

The new normal: Cultivating a COVID-19 lifestyle in tribal context

T

he coronavirus pandemic has changed all known ideas and definitions of reality. Every day we learn something new and introduce it to our ‘new normal’ routine. While everyone is hoping and praying for the coronavirus pandemic to leave soon and normalcy to return in everyday lives. Many have not yet realised that things won’t go back to normal anytime soon. As long as the world has found a cure or a vaccine for covid-19 we may have to adjust to a new normal, meaning a new way of living and going about our lives and with other people. I would like to bring out some New Normal in our context. Death of the Handshake: Shaking hands is standard in almost all areas of human endeavour in western culture which tribal people also adopted in their social life. We shake hands to say hello, goodbye, congratulations, to demonstrate respect, loyalty, trust, cooperation and to signal our confidence and character of strangers, acquaintance, friends

and even foes. Before the advent of Christianity or British rule in Naga hills, handshake was not known among the tribals but later on the tribals learnt the habit of handshake from other culture. Shaking hands with strangers or acquaintances would show that they were not reaching for their swords. The up and down movement would then shake free any weapons hidden up a sleeve. But could the handshake of the past be the same to post Covid-19? Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House pandemic taskforce have pondered that ‘t’s time the handshake be squeezed out in favour of reducing the transmission of viruses and bacteria.’ After all many of us don’t generally practise proper hygiene, the one innocent handshake may infect the disease. Through the years, shaking hands has become the universal gesture for greeting; unfortunately, even these simple gesture can lead to possible contamination. To convey our emotion without the risk of infection here are few new normal alterna-

tives to handshake such as Namaste, age-old gesture in India, join our hands together in front of our body and bow our head a little. Wave, waving seems simple enough and convey a casual greeting for friends without touching involved. Hand on Heart, a sign of respect as well as greeting, this gesture only requires you to place your hand on your heart and bow your head. Etc. There are plenty of options to greet someone better than the handshake and it’s a challenge to cultivate the new normal. Masks are here to stay: Masks were initially derived from the western hip-hop and thug culture in the black community. To cover up their faces from CCTV cameras when they were committing crimes, that’s how the wearing of masks started in the west which followed into hip-hop. Long before the coronavirus pandemic took its tool on the world, mask became a part of fashion but now it has become a protective measure upon us. People have just started to wear mask because it is

The need to make collective effort to defeat COVID-19

I

the most effective way to prevent the spread of the outbreak. To the tribal if anybody closes his/her mouth while talking, passing by, or socializing it was considered as something abomination or disgusting or unmannered. But today if anybody don’t wear masks on the markets, streets, social gatherings etc they are considered as abomination or uncultured. Now we know that it is the best protection we have and that we all need to wear a mask to reduce spreading of diseases. Wearing masks have become a new normal for all. Hygienic Hand wash: Never before have so many of us been so attentive to the cleanliness of our hands. Often tribal people washed our hands when they are dirty or for meals but today hand washing has been a focus under covid-19. Washing our hands even when they are not dirty and sanitising often has become the new normal to prevention from diseases and live hygienic life. Lesser Visitation: The tradition of visiting

friends and relatives were very common and good old tradition among the tribals that brings closeness, love and affection. Visiting each other help us to know and care for each other. It helps us to build stronger and better relationship and concern for one other. But unlimited visitation or visiting while they are busy would rather bring annoying or irritation to others. Therefore limited visitation is very important. The present covid-19 pandemic, has enforced us no visitation or less visitation and this is going to be a new normal in our social life. It will become dying tradition or forgotten tradition because the lesser you visit, the safer you are today. Lesser visitation is not only safety measure for us but it also gives more quality time with our family that build better relationship. Lesser visitation and quality time with family will be the new normal. Social Distancing: Social distancing which everyone is practising to curb the spread of the virus, will be the new normal in times to come. Social closeness

or public gathering has become a great threat to the spread of Covid-19 pandemic. The government have ordered that we should maintain social distance or should not gather more numbers. It’s a great challenge for the tribal that most tribal community regularly organize large traditional gathering to mark special events or festivals. In the post covid-19 such gathering or celebration will be limited with fewer numbers. There will be lesser number in wedding, funeral and other social gathering as new normal. Everyone should make social distancing a part of their lives, even when the pandemic ends. In conclusion, with no vaccine and no cure on hand, what is the solution to the problem are we facing? We have one solution that is ‘Prevention is better than Cure.’ Nothing prevents the covid infection. In this endeavour we all need to now develop and cultivate what I call a Covid Lifestyle and make it our New Normal. S.Wati, Discipleship Bible College

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): In a sharp response to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s “Act of God” comment on the impact of coronavirus on the economy, Congress leader P Chidambaram said today: “Don’t blame God for a man-made disaster.” The former Finance Minister, in an interview to NDTV a day after a 24 per cent drop in the GDP signaled India’s worst economic contraction on record, also called the government’s relief package “a joke”. “Don’t blame god. In fact you should thank god. God has blessed the farmers of the country. The pandemic is a natural disaster. But you are compounding the pandemic, a natural disaster, with a man-made disaster,” Mr Chidambaram said, asked what he would advise Nirmala Sitharaman, from one Finance Minister to another. The DCW team visited the location along with the police and entered a spa. They found several customers at the centre. been predicting V-shaped recovery for months. Then he saw green shoots when the Finance Minister said it. Where are the green shoots,” Mr Chidambaram wondered. According to the senior Congress leader, every data point that Mr Subramanian relied on had been refuted by the report of the Reserve Bank of India. Mr Chidambaram’s prescription for economic recovery was that the government should either borrow heavily or monetize deficit (in common parlance, he said, print money to cover part of the deficit, which is part of the government’s sovereign right). “This is the time to borrow, spend, boost demand, put money in the hands of the poor so that consumption increases,” said the former minister. When it was pointed out that the government did come up with the “Aatma Nirbhar package” during the pandemic, based on PM Modi’s motto of a self-reliant economy, Mr Chidambaram shotback: “It is a joke.”

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): The Government of India Tuesday took a comprehensive security review of the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), especially the developments in eastern Ladakh, where its troops outflanked the Chinese a few days ago and now dominate the entire southern bank of Pangong Tso. The review meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and

Chinese troops were engaged in provocative action again in the south bank area of Ladakh’s Pangong Lake yesterday, but India was able to prevent these attempts, the government said two days after a similar attempt in the same area. “Yesterday, on 31st August, even as the ground commanders of the two sides were in discussions to de-escalate the situation, the Chinese troops again engaged in provocative action,” the foreign ministry said. “Due to the timely defensive action, the Indian side was able to prevent these attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo”. “The actions and behavior of the Chinese side since earlier this year along the LAC has been in clear violation of the bilateral agreements and protocols

JEE Mains held amid precautions

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (PTI): The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-Mains for admission to engineering colleges began on Tuesday amid stringent precautions and social distancing measures in view of COVID-19 pandemic. Staggered entry and exit for candidates, sanitisers at the gate, distribution of masks and maintaining social distancing as candidates queued up, were among the scenes witnessed at the exam centres across the country. The exam which has been postponed twice in view of COVID-19 pandemic is scheduled from September 1 to 6. “Hand sanitisers are being made available at the entrance of the examination centre and inside the exam hall at all times. The usual process of checking the admit cards of candidates has been replaced with barcode readers, which have been made available to the examination centre authorities,” said an official of the National Testing Agency (NTA). “While all the candidates are asked to go to the exam centres with masks and sanitisers, once they enter the centre, they have

to use the masks provided by the examination authority. Each candidate will be offered a 3-ply mask at the time of entry and expected to wear the same during the examination in order to avoid any form of unfair means at the time of examination,” the official added. The first shift of the exam began at 9.30 am while the second shift will begin from 2.30 pm. “Before the start of each exam shift and after the last shift ends, all seats will be thoroughly sanitised and the work stations and keyboards will be disinfected,” the NTA official said.

Over 9 lakh candidates have registered for the JEEMains exam for admission to engineering courses in IITs, NITs and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). Increasing the number of examination centres, alternate seating plans, fewer candidates per room and staggered entry and exit are among the steps the National Testing Agency has taken for safely conducting the crucial exam. While the governments of Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have assured students that they will provide transportation to

candidates, a group of IIT alumni and students have also launched a portal to provide transport facilities to exam centres for the candidates in need. There has been a growing chorus for postponing JEE-Mains and medical entrance exam NEET amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases. The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a plea seeking postponement of the two exams amid a spurt in the number of COVID19 cases, saying a “precious year” of students cannot be wasted and life has to go on.

Ne w D elhi , Sep 1 (PTI): Amid a political slugfest over the Facebook issue, a parliamentary panel will meet on Wednesday to discuss alleged misuse of the social media platform. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology, headed by senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, has summoned representatives of Facebook and will hear their views “on the subject of safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space,” according to the agenda of the meeting. It has also called representatives of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on the same issue. The meeting of the panel was adjourned on Tuesday in view of the national mourning due to the demise of former President Pranab Mukherjee. Its agenda for the day was suspension of internet services in several parts of the country. However, panel members were intended to discuss the suspension of internet services in J&K, a source said.

Problematic when FB employees abuse PM: IT Min Prasad writes to Zuckerberg NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): In the middle of a huge controversy over reports alleging a Facebook executive was biased towards members of the ruling BJP, the government has written to Mark Zuckerberg alleging quite the opposite. Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, in a sharp letter to the Facebook founder, alleged that employees of the social media giant “are on record abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior cabinet ministers” while still working in Facebook India and managing important positions. However, he said, there were attempts through “selective leaks” to portray a different reality. The “interference in India’s political process through gossip, whispers and innuendo is condemnable. This collusion of Facebook with the international media is giving free run to malevolent vested interests to cast aspersions on the democratic process of our great democracy,” he wrote. The IT minister wrote he had been told that in the run-up to the 2019 election, “there was a concerted effort

TOKYO, SEP 1 (AP): With Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announcing his plans to step down due to health reasons, members of his ruling party are furiously maneuvering ahead of an internal vote that will ultimately decide his successor. Executives of Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party met Tuesday and decided that the September 14 vote for party leader — and with it almost assuredly prime minister — will be limited to lawmakers and not broader members of the party. Some younger lawmakers had called for the latter to be included in order to make the process more open and democratic. Whoever is chosen will fill in for the rest of Abe’s term, until September 2021. The next prime minister will face a number of challenges, including the ongoing fight against COVID19, managing the Tokyo Olympics that has been post-

poned to next summer, setting Japan’s security policy in the face of an increasingly assertive China, and dealing with the results are of the presidential election in the US, Japan’s key ally. Here are the three candidates, who have either announced their intention to run or are expected to do so: Yo s h i h i d e S u g a : Japan’s top government spokesman and Abe’s longtime right-hand man, the 71year-old Suga has emerged as the favorite among ruling party heavyweights. Suga has been pegged by the party secretary general as the best caretaker who can ensure the continuation of Abe’s policies. The son of a farmer in the northern prefecture of Akita, Suga is a self-made politician, rare in Japan’s largely hereditary world of politics. As chief cabinet secretary, Suga is a policy coordinator and advisor to Abe.

He is also the public face of Abe’s government, doing twice-daily televised media briefings. He’s become known as “Uncle Reiwa” after he was tasked with unveiling the new imperial era name for Emperor Naruhito last year. Suga has been a loyal supporter of Abe since his first stint as prime minister from 2006-2007 and helped his return to power in 2012. Suga had previously denied that he would run, but on Monday simply told reporters he would not comment. Fumio Kishida: Abe’s foreign minister from 20122017, the 63-year-old Kishida had once been considered the party’s preferred choice to become the next prime minister. His status has slipped, however, after he was seen as fumbling some of the party’s response to the coronavirus in his role as policy chief. In formally announcing his candidacy Tuesday, Kishida

said he would be a leader who listens to the voices of the people — something Abe has been criticized for not doing enough. A low-key lawmaker from Hiroshima with somewhat dovish stance on security issues, he has been less supportive of Abe’s longtime push to rewrite Japan’s war-renouncing Constitution. Kishida struck a 2015 settlement with South Korea on “comfort women,” victims of Japan’s wartime sexual abuse. Kishida in 2017 helped arrange thenPresident Barack Obama’s visit to Hiroshima, a first for a serving American leader. Shigeru Ishiba: A former defense minister seen as Abe’s archrival within the party, the 63-year-old Ishiba is the public’s favorite for the next prime minister in media surveys. Ishiba’s vocal criticism of Abe, however, has hurt his popularity among ruling party lawmakers. Ishiba has criticised Abe’s rule as autocratic and raised concerns about growing poverty. A soft-spoken bankerturned-politician, Ishiba is known as a defense hawk and says Japan should have stronger military capability within the current constitutional limitations.

I inherited him: Trump says of Anthony Fauci

Washington, Sep 1 (IANS): US President Donald Trump has questioned the value of Anthony Fauci to the White House coronavirus task force, saying that he “inherited” the country’s top infectious disease expert, the media reported. “I disagree with a lot of what he said,” The Hill news website quoted Trump saying in a Fox News interview on Monday when asked if he would put Fauci “front and centre” in the pandemic response if he could do it again. “I get along with him, but every once in a while, he’ll come up with one that I say, ‘Where did that

come from?’. “I inherited him. He was here. He was part of this huge piece of machine,” the President added. Trump has repeatedly undermined and criticized Fauci, Director of the US National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Last month, he retweeted a message that said Fauci “has misled the American public on many issues, but in particular, on dismissing #hydroxychloroquine and calling Remdesivir the new gold standard”. He also has said that Fauci is a nice man but has “made a lot of mistakes”.

Pranab’s death huge loss for Sino-India friendship: China

Beijing, Sept 1 (PTI): China on Tuesday paid rich tributes to former president Pranab Mukherjee, saying he was a veteran statesman and his death is a huge loss for India-China friendship. “Former President Mukherjee was a veteran statesman of India. In his 50 years in politics, he made positive contributions to China-India relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing here, replying to a question. Referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India in 2014 and his meeting with Mukherjee, she said after the meeting the two countries issued a joint statement on building closer development partnership.

US Open: Djokovic rolls into 2nd round Kyle Edmund, who defeated Alexander Bublik earlier in the day. Djokovic holds a 5-1 advantage in their headto-head meetings.

With the two other members of the sport’s Big Three - Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal - absent from the tournament, Djokovic

is a heavy favourite to hoist the trophy and pull within one Grand Slam title of Nadal (19) and two of Federer (20).

2 PSG players test positive for Covid-19 PARIS, Sep 1 (Agencies): Two Paris St Germain players have tested positive for COVID-19 and gone into quarantine, the club announced on Monday without revealing their identity. But French media said Argentine internationals Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes had cut short their holidays in Ibiza after contracting the novel coronavirus. “Two Paris Saint-Germain players are suspected of being infected

with COVID-19,” said a club statement. “The state of their health is very reassuring. They have already been subjected to the appropriate health protocols.” Both now face missing PSG’s belated start to the Ligue 1 season away at Racing Lens on September 10 and at home to Olympique Marseille three days later. The pair both featured for the French club in the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final in Lisbon on August 23.

BCCI set to spend around Rs 10 crore for Covid tests Novak Djokovic returns a shot to Damir Dzumhur during their US Open match.

NE W YO R K, S e p 1 (Agencies): Novak Djokovic got his campaign to win a fourth U.S. Open, and 18th Grand Slam title overall, off to a flying start by beating Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the second round. Djokovic broke Dzumhur’s serve for a seventh time to seal the win in the first night match on Arthur Ashe Stadium court, which, due to COVID-19, was missing the thousands of rowdy New York tennis fans that usually flock to Queens every year.

After a dominant start, Djokovic struggled in the second set and lost his temper even after closing it out. “I thought I started very well, a set and a break (up) then things got complicated,” a masked Djokovic said in courtside interview. “I lost my focus, he started missing less and he put some good variety in the game ... he came up with some good shots and it was anybody’s game midway through the second set.” In the end Dzumhur, who hails from Bosnia and

Herzegovina, had no answer to the world number one’s blistering serve and stout defence in a match that lasted just under two hours. The 28-year-old did not make it easy on himself, committing 41 unforced errors and eight double faults to fall to 0-3 lifetime against Djokovic. With the win the Serbian, who won his fourth title of the year at the Western & Southern Open on Saturday, improved to 24-0 on the season. Next up is a secondround meeting with Briton

Bio-bubble needs to be respected: Kohli

Virat Kohli

Dubai, Sep 1 (IANS): India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli has urged all teams to respect the Indian Premier League’s bio-secure bubble. Speaking on RCB’s Youtube show ‘Bold Diaries’, the 31-year-old Kohli said he didn’t exactly miss the game during the Covidforced lockdown, which brought sporting action to

a halt. “Maybe because I was going on day and night for the last 10 years...It was a revelation for me in the sense that my focus was not solely on missing the game all the time,” Kohli said. “We are all here to play cricket...The bio-bubble needs to be respected at all times for the tournament to happen eventually. We are not here to have fun

and roam around and you know say that ‘I want to hang out in Dubai’,” Kohli said. “That is not the time we are living in. Accept the phase that we are going through and understand the privilege that we have, just to be a part of the IPL. Everyone should accept that and not behave in a manner which the situation doesn’t require them to,” he said. Kohli also added that it didn’t take much time for him to find his groove. “A couple of months back you couldn’t imagine that you will have IPL firstly...When we had our practice session yesterday, I realised how long it has been. When I was heading to the practice session, I felt nervous,” he conceded. “I felt a bit jittery but things were okay. I didn’t miss the game as much as I thought I might...just carrying on with life was also important,” he said.

Karolina Pliskova

Naomi Osaka

Top seed Karolina Pliskova has reached the second round of the US Open with a clinical win over Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina. Competing as the top seed at a Grand Slam for the second time in her career, Pliskova shook off some early rust in a tricky first set before registering a confident 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kalinina in a match that lasted a little over an hour. Pliskova will now take on No. 32 seed Caroline Garcia, after the Frenchwoman defeated Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-3, 6-2 in her opening contest. Meanwhile, Japan’s Naomi Osaka showed no signs of discomfort from the injury that forced her to miss a final on Saturday but the former U.S. Open champion had to dig deep to beat com-

patriot Misaki Doi 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in her opener. Osaka, the 2018 champion, started strongly in the opening set as she broke Doi’s serve twice without facing a single breakpoint. But she struggled with her serve in the second and her unforced errors mounted as the 81st-ranked Doi, who lost to Osaka in their only previous meeting in 2016, levelled the match with a second break. Normal service was resumed in the decider, however, as Osaka broke her Fed Cup team mate early before sealing the win with a second break. Next up for Naomi Osaka is Camila Giorgi, who beat Alison van Uytvanck 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Rakitic leaves Barcelona to rejoin Sevilla Madrid, Sep 1 (Agencies): Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic has rejoined Europa League holders Sevilla on a four-year deal from Barcelona, the Liga team said on Tuesday. His departure ends a trophy-laden six-year spell at Camp Nou during which Rakitic won four league titles, four Copa del Rey trophies plus the Champions League and Club World Cup. Spanish media reports had said the 32-year-old, who had one year left on his contract, was not part of new Barca coach Ronald Koeman’s plans for next season. "Sevilla FC and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement for the transfer of midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who will return to the club for a second spell after his first spell at the club between January 2011 and June 2014," Sevilla said in a statement here

N ew Del h i , S e p 1 (PTI): The Indian cricket board has budgeted nearly Rs 10 crore for more than 20,000 COVID-19 tests to be conducted during the Indian Premier League starting September 19. While the eight franchises bore the cost of testing in India, the BCCI is picking up the tab for the RT-PCR tests which have been conducted from August 20 when the teams started landing in UAE. “We have engaged VPS Healthcare, a UAE based company to conduct the tests. While I can’t put a number, it will be more than 20,000 tests which would include everyone. Each test would cost BCCI around 200 AED (Dirham) excluding taxes,” a senior IPL of-

ficial told PTI. “So BCCI will be spending something in the tune of Rs 10 crore for the COVID tests. Around 75 healthcare workers who are part of the company are a part of the IPL testing process,” the official said. The BCCI doesn’t want to leave anything to chance as far as safety of players and officials is concerned and the healthcare workers have been put in a separate hotel.

Chelsea set £80 million Kante price tag London, Sep 1 (Agencies): Chelsea have reportedly placed an £80million price-tag on midfielder N’Golo Kante amid rumoured interest from Inter Milan. Inter boss Antonio Conte signed Kante from Leicester City when he was Blues manager and the pair won the Premier League title and the FA Cup together. And, according to The Express, he wants to reunite with the Frenchman at the San Siro ahead of next season. It has been suggested that Conte would like the midfielder on loan with a view to a permanent deal further down the line. The re por t claims Frank Lampard and Blues chiefs are not keen to sell Kante and have placed a massive £80m valuation on his head. Chelsea are still looking to raise funds for two more signings after already

N’Golo Kante

forking out on Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva. Kai Havertz is believed to be close to signing from Bayer Leverkusen, while others are still in the pipeline. Inter need to sell to raise their own funds but

Conte is also eyeing other Chelsea stars, it is claimed. Full-back Emerson Palmieri and striker Olivier Giroud are two other players that he would like to sign ahead of the new season. Italy inter national Palmieri looks set to leave

Stamford Bridge anyway after the signing of Ben Chilwell, while Giroud could also find himself down the pecking order. Inter are also interested in Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele but have been told that he will cost £55m.

NBA: Miami Heat beat Bucks 115-104 in Game 1 Mkhitaryan leaves Arsenal;

Miami, Sep 1 (Agencies): Jimmy Butler hit three consecutive hoops down the stretch to cap a postseason career-high, 40-point perfor mance on Monday night as the fifth-seeded Miami Heat stunned the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks 115-104 in the opener of their Eastern Conference semi-final series in the NBA bubble. Goran Dragic chipped in with 27 points and Bam Adebayo accumulated a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds as the Heat struck the first blow in the best-of-seven series. Giannis Antetokounmpo was held to 18 points in the loss, which was Milwaukee’s second straight in an opening game. The Bucks dropped Game 1 to Orlando in the first round before rebounding with four consecutive decisive wins. Milwaukee came out on fire against Miami, pouring in 40 first-quarter points en route to an 11-

point advantage. Antetokounmpo had half of his 18 points in that run. But the Heat clawed back, getting within 63-60 by half-time before taking an 82-80 lead late in the third quarter on a pair of

Tyler Herro free throws. Milwaukee regained a 96-95 advantage on an Antetokounmpo lay-up with 6:04 to play, before Butler gave Miami the lead for good at 97-96 on a floater with 5:50 left.

It was still a one-point game before Butler’s decisive late flurry that included two short jumpers sandwiching a three-pointer, single-handedly pushing the Heat advantage to 10698 with just 2:19 to play.

Milwaukee got no closer than five after that. Butler’s 40 points came on 13-for-20 shooting and 12-for-13 accuracy from the free throw line. His previous postseason career-high was 36 points for Philadelphia against Brooklyn last season. Herro was the fourth player in double figures with 11 points for the Heat, who outscored the Bucks 25-14 at the foul line. Antetokounmpo’s 18 points were his fewest in a playoff game since he was held to 12 by Toronto in Game 3 of the Eastern Finals last season. Despite his scoring problems, the defending MVP nearly completed a triple-double, recording team-highs in rebounds with 10 and assists with nine. Khris Middleton led Milwaukee with 28 points and Brook Lopez added 24 points. Kyle Korver finished with 11 points for the Bucks, who outshot the Heat 49.3% to 46.4.

joins Roma on permanent deal

Milan, Sep 1 (Agencies): Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has joined Serie A side AS Roma on a permanent deal after terminating his contract with Arsenal, the Premier League club said on Monday. Mkhitaryan joined Roma at the start of last season after a disappointing 18-month spell at Arsenal following a swap deal in January 2018 which saw Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez move to Manchester United. Roma had initially reached an agreement last month to extend Mkhitaryan’s loan deal until the end of next season. “Micki leaves us following his season-long loan in Italy. We have agreed to terminate his contract with us by mutual consent to allow him to join Roma in a permanent move,” Arsenal said in a statement here Mkhitaryan scored
