Army, NSCN (K) clash along Indo-Myanmar border area DIMAPUR/NEW DELHI, SEP 27 (NPN/ PTI): The Indian Army on Wednesday claimed that it inflicted “heavy casualties” on the cadres of the NSCN (K) during “retaliatory” fire along the India-Myanmar border on the Nagaland side in the early hours. Informing this through a communiqué, Eastern Command stated that a column of the Indian Army operating along the IndoMyanmar border was fired upon by unidentified rebels of the NSCN (K) around 4.45 am. Sources informed that the clash erupted between 21 (SF) para commandos and NSCN (K) cadres. Easter n Command said its troops suffered no casualties during the action. “Own troops reacted swiftly and brought down heavily retaliatory fire on insurgents. The insurgents then broke contact and fled from the spot. As per inputs, a large number of casualties were suffered by the insurgents. Own troops suffered no casualties,” the statement added.
It, however, did not tell about the number of insurgents killed or injured in the attack. The Army also asserted that Indian troops “did not cross the international border”. Responding to a question at a cabinet briefing about the incident, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, “There are no two opinions that Myanmar is a friendly country. Whatever information we get, we will inform you about it.” However, PTI reports said that a Facebook post by Isak Sumi, a senior functionary of the NSCN(K) who is also on the ‘most wanted list’ of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), said the encounter occurred on the outskirt of Langkhu village located inside Myanmar occupied Naga area, 10-15 km away from Indo-Myanmar border. “The encounter started around 3 AM when the elite unit of the Naga Army detected a column of Indian Army approaching their temporary make shift camp in the outskirt of Lang-
khu village located inside Myanmar occupied Naga area, 10-15 kms away from Indo-Myanmar border. The exchange was continuing till the time of filing this report,” said Sumi, who is referred to as the PRO of the NSCN by the NIA on its website updated last year. He claimed that “three Indian soldiers were killed and an unconfirmed number injured but there was no casualty or injury on the Naga Army”. His post states that he is currently based in Yangon in Myanmar. Army sources have maintained that it was “not a surgical strike”. Its response came hours after Sumi’s post. The Easter n Command also tweeted, “Repor ts of casualties to #IndianArmy personnel factually incorrect. Firefight occurred along IndoMyanmar border at 0445 hrs today @adgpi.” In June 2015, the Army had conducted a similar operation against banned insurgent groups following the killing of 20 soldiers in Manipur.

in Nagaland gains more support
DIMAPUR, SEP 27 (NPN): Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP), Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) and Kohima Baptist Pastor Fellowship (KBPF) have “unanimously” extended support to the public resolutions adopted on August 25, 2017 ACAUT mass rally in Dimapur, which demanded the passage of Lokayukta Bill in the state Assembly by September 2017. In a press release, AKMWP president, Neibulie Kiewhuo, and vice president, Khrielakuo Sekhose, stated that the decision to extend support was taken at joint consultative meeting of AKMWP, KBPF and ACAUT held in Kohima on September 26. The meeting, which was hosted by AKMWP, noted that corruption cannot be wiped out with a magic wand, but there was a “short cut” to check corruption, which is setting up Lokayukta in Nagaland. Further, the house observed that in a state government where there was no opposition and was a party-less government, a mechanism such as Lokayukta, which
was an independent institution to check corruption headed by a retired supreme court judge or a retired high court judge as the chairman, must be immediately constituted in the state of Nagaland. “Successive government will come and go, but when this Lokayukta is once appointed, it will stay whether a government is there or not,” the house maintained. The speakers at the meeting, which held on two-point agenda -- Corruption and Clean Election -dwelt on random unchecked practice of corruption, violating every system of guidelines and procedural function of both the Centre and the state. With regard to Clean Election, the house opined that any amount of planning or circulating DOs and DON’Ts through print media was not helping much. Therefore, the house suggested that the only option was to “Walk the Talk”. The meeting maintained that even as the NBCC was spearheading the clean election campaign, every civil society organisation such as NGOs, (Cont’d on p-8) churches,

UNHRC denounce India’s refusal to repeal AFSPA’ Correspondent
IMPHAL, Sep 27: Delegates represented Manipur in the recently concluded UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) were disappointed when the session only “noted without indicating a follow up plan and not accepted” to most of the human rights issues critical to the situation in the state. A delegation from Manipur led by Dr L Debabrata Roy convener of Civil Society on Human Rights (CSCHR) in Manipur and The UN and included among other noted state based human right activist Babloo Loitongbam attended the session during which human right situation in India was discussed on September 21. Addressing a news conference here on Wednesday, Dr L Debabrata Roy said that many international organizations including Amnesty International, International Commission of Jurist, FORUM-ASIA, WGHR, etc., strongly denounced the GoI’s continued refusal to accept the recommendation for the repeal/review of AFSPA in the region during the 36th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Dr Roy said that during the session for the adoption of the outcome document on India’s 3rd Universal Periodic Review (UPR)to improve its human rights
situation, on September 21, the Government of India formally accepted 152 recommendations out of the 250 recommendations given by 112 member states of the United Nations. The remaining 98 recommendations were simply noted. However, most of the human rights issues critical to the situation in Manipur including the repeal/review of AFSPA, ratification of Convention on Protection of All Persons Against Enforced Disappearances (CED), moratorium on death penalty, ratification of the Rome Statute on International Criminal Court, etc., are only noted without indicating a follow up plan and not accepted. CSCHR strongly deplored the refusal of the GoI to repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) despite persistent recommendations from the UN and international community, he said. In the first cycle of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in 2008 Germany, UK and Canada made recommendation regarding AFSPA, he reminded. Similarly, in the second cycle in 2012, Switzerland, France and Slovakia made similar recommendations. In this third cycle too government of Switzerland and Pakistan raised the issue. But in all the three cycles GoI has persistently refused to accept the recommendation, he added.

Yashwant’s critique on Modi: Government on defensive ha’s article on Twitter with a cryptic reference to the state of India’s economy under the BJP. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your copilot and FM speaking. Please fasten your seat belts and take brace position. The wings have fallen off our plane,” he tweeted. Chidambaram said Sinha only spoke the truth when he stated that the growth rate would have been 3.7% or less (instead of 5.7%) if the government had not changed the methodology for calculating the GDP in 2015. “Yashwant Sinha speaks ‘Truth to Power’. Will Power now admit the Truth that the economy is sinking?” he tweeted. He also signalled his agreement with Sinha’s observation that raids by those in power have become the order of the day. “Instilling fear in the minds of the people is the name of the new game,” Chidambaram cited Sinha as saying, then added: “But the eternal truth is: No matter what Power does, Truth will ultimately prevail.” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Sinha had “rightly spoken as to how an experimental finance minister and an autocrat Prime Minister can wreck India’s
economy”, and that it was “time for the people of this country to seek relevant answers from Arun Jaitley as well as Narendra Modi”. Stating that the facts and figures point at how the Indian “economy is in a state of flux”, he said: “The GDP has fallen from 9.2% to 5.7%. As per old (methodology of calculation), it will be about 3.5%... On top of that, there is Rs 2.67 lakh crore in revenue being collected by the government through taxes on petrol and diesel. The Prime Minister only speaks and the finance minister only mismanages the economy.” The government, however, shrugged off Sinha’s critique. “The world acknowledges that India is its fastest-growing economy. No one should forget that. Our image at the international level is very strong,” home minister Rajnath Singh told reporters here. Union minister Piyush Goyal was also quick to come to his government’s defence. “Some of the landmark reforms this government has brought in are unprecedented. Under the leadership of PM Modi, India has become the world’s fastest growing economy for three years in a row,” he said.

New Delhi, SEP 28 (AGENCIES): BJP leader Yashwant Sinha’s scathing criticism of the Modi regime’s economic policies has sent the Opposition into overdrive, with everybody from Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to former finance minister P Chidambaram citing his words to target the Union government. Sinha stated in an Indian Express article, titled ‘I need to speak up now’, that it was his national duty to bring the “mess the finance minister had made of the economy” to the people’s notice. He then went on to lambast several key financial initiatives adopted by the central government, including demonetisation (“an unmitigated economic disaster”) and the Goods and Services Tax (”a badly conceived and poorly implemented move that has played havoc with businesses”), and slammed the manner in which the present dispensation’s policies allegedly ended up creating more unemployment instead of eliminating it. Gandhi, a vocal critic of the Modi government’s economic strategies, was quick to latch on. Accusing the Modi government of ignoring the plight of the masses while extending
Yashwant Sinha favours to a select few, the Congress vice president told his audience at Chotila in Surendranagar district that the criticism he was going to cite comes not from him but a senior BJP leader. “He (Sinha) wrote that though many others in the party know our country is in deep trouble, no one is ready to speak up because they are afraid of Modiji,” said Gandhi. “The country is in a shambles because the BJP government never listens to farmers, youngsters, labourers, traders and women who actually run this country. The people in the BJP government listen only to businessmen, and then tell the citizens their own ‘mann ki baat’.” The last part of his remark was a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio show. The Congress vice president also shared Sin-
A temple in Vellalur village of Madurai district follows this ancient tradition where the priest selects seven young girls live in the temple for a fortnight. C h e nna i , S e p 2 8 (AGENCIES): The editorin-chief of news website in Coimbatore has complained that she has been receiving threatening calls ever since it ran a story on a bizarre ritual in a Madurai village where ‘half-naked’ teenaged and younger girls are forced to live inside a temple under the supervision of a priest. A temple in Vellalur village of Madurai district follows this ancient tradition where the priest selects seven girls between ages of 10 and 14 to live in the temple for a fortnight. The girls are forced to remain
bare-chested and cover their upper body only with jewellery and flowers. According to the temple’s tradition, the priest selected the seven girls and ‘offered’ them to the deity for a fortnight beginning the last Tuesday in the Tamil month of Aavani. Girls from 62 villages are paraded before the priest of the Yezhaikaatha Amman temple at Velalur before seven are selected. Soon after the website posted the report as well as a video, the administration swung into action to probe the issue. A committee found that it was an ancient tradition but there
was no evidence of sexual abuse or harassment inside the temple. The website was bombarded with threatening phone calls, abuses and hate calls. “I had to switch off my phone as there was a volley of life threats and several hate calls ever since we posted the story and Madurai district administration reached the spot to probe,” Vidyashree Dharmaraj, editor-in-chief of Covai Post told Hindustan Times. She has lodged a formal complaint with the Coimbatore police, giving all the phone numbers from where she received the threatening calls.

The scheme of Special Central Assistance (SCA) for 35 worst LWE-affected districts has been introduced with an outlay of Rs 3,000 crore to tackle the issue of underdevelopment in these districts, he said, adding an outlay of Rs 100 crore has also been earmarked in the North Eastern states for police infrastructure upgradation, training institutes and investigation facilities. “Implementation of this scheme would bolster the government’s ability to address challenges faced in different theatres such as areas affected by LWE, Jammu and Kashmir and northeast effectively and undertake development interventions which will catalyze
in improving the quality of life in these areas and help combat these challenges at the same time,” Rajnath Singh said. He said that new initiatives were being introduced to provide assistance to states for upgradation of police infrastructure, forensic science laboratories, institutions and the equipment available with them to plug critical gaps in the criminal justice system. Police stations will be integrated to set up a national data base of crime and criminals records and it will be linked with other pillars of criminal justice system such as prisons, forensic science laboratories and prosecution offices. “The umbrella scheme also provides for setting up of a state-of art forensic science laboratory in Amravati (Andhra Pradesh) and upgradation of Sardar Patel Global Centre for Security, Counter Terrorism and Anti Insurgency in Jaipur and Gujarat Forensic Science University in Gandhinagar,” he said.

New Delhi, Sep 27 ( I A N S ) : T h e Vi s h wa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday urged the Narendra Modi government to deport Rohingya Muslims but grant refugee status to Rohingya Hindus and provide them a “secure and blissful life in India”. The VHP’s International Joint General Secretary Surendra Kumar Jain said in a statement that Rohingya Hindus need to be seen in a different light from the Rohingya Muslims, who he alleged were “indulging in terrorist activities”. “To handle the Muslim Rohingyas, the policy of ‘no more newcomers, oust the existing ones’ needs to be implemented,” he said. He claimed that Rakhine’s Rohingya Hindus don’t want Indian citizenship but are ready to relocate to any Hindu or Buddhist majority area in Myanmar.
Superstar Dileep offered Rs 3 crore for abduction Kochi, SEP 28 (AGENCIES): The prosecution in the actress abduction case on Wednesday informed the Kerala high court that arrested Malayalam actor Dileep had offered Rs 3 crore for abduction of the actress in February this year. The prosecution informed that Dileep offered Pulsar Suni Rs 1.50 crore for carrying out the abduction, and in case he gets caught in the act by the police, the compensation would be doubled. The actress was abducted while on way by road from Thrissur to Kochi. The High Court was hearing the bail plea of Dileep, for the third time at the High Court, and the fifth overall, since his arrest on July 10 in the case. The court posted the verdict on this for a later date. The prosecution also got permission from the court to take a statement before a magistrate from popular singer, TV and film artiste Rimy Tomy and three others. Meanwhile, Dileep’s counsel told the court that they are prepared to satisfy any condition for the bail. Dileep was arrested on July 10 for alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the kidnapping of the actress. She was taken around in the vehicle for about two hours and allegedly molested before being dumped near actor-director Lal’s home.

New Delhi, SEP 28 (AGENCIES): The Centre on Wednesday extended the deadline for obtaining Aadhaar for availing government schemes and subsidies by three months to December 31. The extension is, however, only for those who are yet to apply of Aadhaar, an order issued by the ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said. As many as 135 schemes (of 35 ministries) including the free cooking gas (LPG) to poor women, kerosene and fertiliser subsidy, targeted public distribution system (PDS) and MGNREGA will be covered by the extension. Ahmedabad, Sep 27 (IANS): Lawyers of the Gujarat High Court went on strike on Wednesday in support of Karnataka High Court judge Justice Jayant Patel, who resigned on Monday, protesting against the transfer and promotion policy of the Supreme Court Collegium. “Justice Patel was an upright judge, and what is at stake here? We are worried about the holding of rule of law, the basic structure of the Constitution. You cannot compromise there,” Gujarat High Advocates Association President Aseem Pandya said. “If this trend continues, within a short time people might not have any fundamental rights,” he added. “This is a very dangerous trend that is being set and so we are protesting.” Patel, the senior-most puisne judge of the Karnataka High Court after the Chief Justice, was transferred to the Allahabad High Court instead of be-
ing elevated as the Chief Justice going by seniority. It is believed that Justice Patel, who was Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court before being posted to Bengaluru, resigned in a huff over his transfer to the Allahabad High Court where he would be the third seniormost judge. Justice Jayant Patel had ordered a CBI investigation into the controversial Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. He also monitored the investigation, which involved looking into the role of senior officials of the Intelligence Bureau. He was sworn in as a judge of Karnataka High Court on Febr uar y 13 last year while he was appointed the Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High

Justice Jayant Patel Court on August 13, 2015. The Gujarat High Court lawyers had on Tuesday also passed a resolution “strongly” condemning the decision taken by Supreme Court Collegium. It stated: “The decision of the Collegiums of the SC of transferring Justice Jayant Patel, seniormost judge of the Karnataka HC, on the eve of
his likely appointment as acting CJ or CJ of that court, to Allahabad HC has shaken the belief of the Bar in the independence of the judiciary and has the potential of adversely affecting the morale of the legal fraternity and the judiciary.” Justice Patel became a judge at the Gujarat High Court after 22 years of practice. Besides the Ishrat Jahan case, he had put a stay on the Gujarat government’s politically ambitious proposal to make voting compulsory for all the citizens in local body polls. “It is very evident and there is no need for me to say it,” Aseem Pandya replied to a question if Justice Patel had been penalized for his past decisions like in the Ishrat Jahan case.

Waiting for better days
W
hile the powers that be at the Centre and those political economists may believe that the economic policies have succeeded in blanking out black money and making the economy stronger with a huge number of new bank accounts; the ordinary citizens are feeling the pinch as prices of almost all items have shot up. After demonetisation, account holders are finding that they are no longer free to transact business with multiple rules that have robbed them of the joy of the right to withdraw or deposit at will as in the past. For one, frequency of cash transactions has been reduced with higher charges above the limit. Even third party cash transactions have been capped. Depositing huge cash beyond the limit (Rs.2 lakh) invites queries from IT authorities besides levying of additional service tax at Rs. 5 per thousand rupees or a minimum of Rs.150 (plus tax and cess). In fact Banks are making huge amount of money merely out of cash transactions by customers. The steep rise in charges from Rs.20 earlier to Rs.150 per withdrawal has hit many very hard. The banks are also going to deduct some percentage out of the interest accrued from Fixed Deposits of customers. Interest from FD is not a profit earning and to be charged as income tax. These days, FDs and Recurring Deposits (RD) are one of the most popular savings schemes in India. Their popularity stems from the risk-free nature of the money invested and the relative ease of managing them. However things have changed for the worse, after the 8 November 2016 banknote demonetisation by the Union government. Today fixed deposits have largely ceased to be an attractive investment. Almost all major banks, both in the private and the public sector, revised and lowered their fixed deposit interest rates. Over and above the severe problems faced by the ordinary wage earner, the economy has slowed down more sharply than anybody could have imagined a year ago. There are several factors responsible for the slow down but when sentiments spread their shadows then it makes the problem difficult. There are multiple villains to blame, too, the most immediate being the damper of demonetisation of November 2016 and the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) in July this year. Banks transactions also come under GST and therefore, the woes of the ordinary citizen cannot be envied. Owing to the gaurakshaks, even buffalo meat exports has seen a major fall in export despite being the leading contributor to growth among all the areas that are clubbed under agriculture. Uttar Pradesh which is India’s largest meat processing state has faced huge shutdowns after Yogi Adityanath took over as the chief minister. Thus growth has slowed down while employment has also gone down with no jobs created to offset it. The economy has certainly slowed down because the government has moved too fast with its policies without a thought about the consequences of being ill prepared. The economy cannot be described in the same terms as the stock markets because both deal with different matters. In other words, it is wise not to mistake the woods for the trees. Fixing the economy may require huge government spending and could further lead to increase in inflation and which is not very desirable.
DailyDevotion The “Go” of Renunciation …someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” —Luke 9:57 Our Lord’s attitude toward this man was one of severe discouragement, “for He knew what was in man” (John 2:25). We would have said, “I can’t imagine why He lost the opportunity of winning that man! Imagine being so cold to him and turning him away so discouraged!” Never apologize for your Lord. The words of the Lord hurt and offend until there is nothing left to be hurt or offended. Jesus Christ had no tenderness whatsoever toward anything that was ultimately going to ruin a person in his service to God. Our Lord’s answers were not based on some whim or impulsive thought, but on the knowledge of “what was in man.” If the Spirit of God brings to your mind a word of the Lord that hurts you, you can be sure that there is something in you that He wants to hurt to the point of its death. Luke 9:58. These words destroy the argument of serving Jesus Christ because it is a pleasant thing to do. And the strictness of the rejection that He demands of me allows for nothing to remain in my life but my Lord, myself, and a sense of desperate hope. He says that I must let everyone else come or go, and that I must be guided solely by my relationship to Him. And He says, “…the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Luke 9:59. This man did not want to disappoint Jesus, nor did he want to show a lack of respect for his father. We put our sense of loyalty to our relatives ahead of our loyalty to Jesus Christ, forcing Him to take last place. When your loyalties conflict, always obey Jesus Christ whatever the cost. Luke 9:61. The person who says, “Lord, I will follow You, but…,” is the person who is intensely ready to go, but never goes. This man had reservations about going. The exacting call of Jesus has no room for good-byes; good-byes, as we often use them, are pagan, not Christian, because they divert us from the call. Once the call of God comes to you, start going and never stop.

Post-mortem How regional is the NPF? A moment to reflect on !!
he past is a strong testament to the fact that great human civilization flourished against the backdrop of a strong communication system, effective and judicious manipulation of natural resources available. Though there are many factors which determines the growth and development of a nation/ state, good communication lays down the basic foundation for a sound economy and the overall development of a state. Agriculture has always been the mainstay of Naga’s economy since the time of our forefathers. Even today majority of the population live in the rural areas and therefore the economy of the state is based on rural economy. Our forefathers bartered agricultural products with our neighbouring Ahom kingdom for essential commodities mainly salt, as they don’t have the right knowledge to produce other commodities, other than agricultural products. Now when we compare our state with our neighbouring states like Assam and other northern and eastern states, we are lacking far behind in terms of economic stability and other developmental activities. It won’t be fair to argue that other states are blessed with more natural resources as God has bless us equally in terms of natural resources. The problem lies in the fact that, inspite of being blessed with varieties of natural resources, we have failed to utilize it and channel the available resources in the right direction even after more than half a century of attaining statehood. When will our state create our own enterprises to explore our natural resources,
produce commodities for our own consumption, even export, generate employment through these enterprises and become self sufficient and self reliant state, instead of depending solely on central fund to meet our needs and erase the sad reality of being tagged as a non producing state. One of the main hindrance to economic development of our state is the absence of good motorable roads. All the roads in Nagaland both national and state highways have been reduced to a state of “Once upon a time, there was a road”. It is true that in some parts of the state, there is no trace of a road as it resembles a river and one needs a boat instead of a car to travel in these roads. The pitiable condition of roads in Nagaland is just becoming legendary and it will be no surprise if the roads in Nagaland become a regular destination for horse power challenges. The national highways that run through the state, such as NH-29, NH-36, NH-61, NH-150, NH-155 etc are on the verge of disappearing altogether from the Map of highways. Because of this, the people are facing untold misery and hardship. Many goods transporters are not willing to enter Nagaland because of the horrible road condition thereby resulting in price rise on every commodities bringing huge loses to the people because transportation becomes more expensive. After the announcement for the construction of foothill road, the people had high hopes and many of us thought that all our transportation problems are coming to an end. This ambitious project was seen as a welcome
relief from all the hassles experienced when we travel across other states while travelling from one part of our state to another. Unfortunately, there is a very little news regarding the progress of the foothill road, and therefore the high hopes of the road have become a history. Today, the people of Nagaland are living in desperate times. We are desperate in every field. How long are we going to be stuck in this desperate situation created by our own doings? Desperate time calls for desperate measures. It is time for the common people (young or old, rich or poor, officers or ministers, every individual who has the right to vote) to be so desperate, to elect the right leaders, leaders who are desperate to bring changes, leaders who are hungry to bring development to our society, for shaping our present and tomorrow Nagaland for a prosperous state. The power in shaping a progressive future is in our hand i.e. our single precious vote. Let us not waste our democratic rights for a few hundreds or even thousands, but let us use our vote in such a way that good and honest leaders are elected. Therefore, let this coming election be a time of transformation for our Naga society. Let’s give this clean election campaign a reason and take part in it. Fair and clean election is the key to bring about total transformation in our corruption infected society. As such, let our desperate cry for change be heard through our votes. Sungit Jamir, Changtongya Town

he NPF that claims to represent the interests of all sections of Naga society seems to be lacking the ‘regional vigor’ it requires to properly safeguard the interests of Nagas. The primary objective of a regional party is to put the interests and aspirations of the people it represents, before anything and anyone else. One can look up to Tamil Nadu for the best example. In this regard, I’d like to know or rather the general Naga populace needs to know what steps have been taken by the NPF in order to tackle the IBI menace that has for so long been knocking on our doors. The NPF is in its third term now and yet, it seems to be the case that it has failed to take any concrete action to stop the influx of IBIs and in the process, threatening the very existence of Nagas. Over the years, there have been instances of IBIs indulging in crimes against Nagas. The most recent being an attack on a Naga family at Chumukedima. Their emboldened and reckless attitude disgusts the Naga populace but we can only do so much and it is during times like these that the NPF should step up and say, “enough is enough. We must protect our land and people!” but (hardly to anyone’s surprise), not a single word of condemnation or warning from the NPF. This creates doubt in the Naga mind as to whether the NPF is truly a regional party as it claims to be. There were doubts before too but now those doubts have grown bigger. Now the question remains whether Nagas will flock to the NPF like the old days, especially the youth. For sure, the NPF can say that it has been
facilitating the Indo-Naga Peace Talks and that it’s also trying to bring all the NPGs to the table, and that a solution is soon in the offing but these things hardly matter when the very existence of Nagas is under severe threat of being wiped out. We are slowly becoming strangers in our own land. I fear for our future generations. If we do not do anything now, we will be cursed and spat at on our graves. The NPF, in so much mess currently, would do well to regain the confidence and respect of the Naga populace if it genuinely takes up the case of the IBIs on war footing and at the earliest. The NPF should also talk to the NPGs and advise them against recruiting non-Nagas, which is against the very essence of Naga nationalism. There could be no greater insult to our long-cherished and sacred movement than NPGs recruiting non-Nagas. Is this is how we honor and pay tribute to our martyrs for their gallant sacrifices? If the NPF is only willing, the public would wholeheartedly support and even sacrifice their comforts for such an endeavor. Now, as things stand, there are two NPF camps. Either camp can take up this issue at the earliest. In any case, there are ‘’regional heavyweights’’ in both camps. I’m sure they can feel the pulse of the people. The NPF needs to tackle the IBI issue seriously and urgently if it is to stand true to its aim of regionalism. It also needs to know that it would not be alone. The public are ever ready to lend a helping hand. Long story short: Our land is in danger! SOS! I Longkumer
Nagaland – Which direction? (From previous issue) Public are hit with political abnormality and schizophrenia of paper wars of disqualification, majority and minority, and party issues. Enough is enough. We need to re-cultivate the value of shame culture. Who is better than whom? Public are confused and disturbed. No one is better except God- the Creator. They were baptized members of their respective churches. There is no dichotomy. It is a totality. A Christian must live one life, not one inside the church while one outside. It is time to return to where you have started your journey with God. We expect our leaders to live a matching life in their secular circle. 2. Cloud of Religious Fanaticism Dark cloud of religious fanatical fundamentalism looms over our horizon with a subtle and subversive maneuvering manner. But Christians with God in hearts must detect the magnet of heretic disguise and schemes. The slogan is ‘It is politics not religion.’ But blind political boarding will become like an ocean with flattery attraction embedded with hidden content. This paper is not to attack a political party but a warning to the people about the coming fact. Political traps will enslave and consign your freedom for sale. You can avoid a bird making a nest on your head. We must know repercussion that we will harvest (so as you sow you will reap). Higher sublime is better than submersion with money as deathtrap. Nagaland must wisely choose the right direction because it will be too late for resurrection once we are fossilized. Based on what is now, political fluidity will sweep away the ethos of our generation against Christian principle. The Nagas are not born into a cooked up culture of RSS and VHP but into a natural religion (Animism) from which God delivered them some 145 years ago. Nagas are convinced that no other fundamental faith would offer them a better future except their faith in Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus talks about a rocky ground against a sandy ground
(Matt 7:24,25). Relevantly, morality and integrity are better than a seasonal rain of fleeting politics. 3. Ensuing Election Assorted package of money and political influence of ruling government will overflow in a secular skin with hidden content of an ulterior agenda. But it is the citizens to make responsible decision as Christians. We must not crucify public welfare by individual gain or favor of a sheer political party. Think of your children, their future, teeming students in schools, smiling kids at homes, and even lives in the womb of mothers today. We appeal to the general public to uphold and implement the guideline of Clean Election outlined by the Church, NBCC. Nagaland is faced with famine of committed leadership. Nagaland will have no regret with electing ‘Leaders of principle’. We appeal to the intending candidates to consider going to election (1) if you have an unwavering and strong Christian faith, (2) if you love others and public more than your own gain and interest, (3) if you have an evidential commitment to meet public needs, and (4) if you are a stable and dependable person. Keeping the issue of Naga political solution open before the sovereignty of God, we pray to God for Leaders of *Sound Christian faith. Leaders of faith who can apologetically stand for and defend the foundation of the land against subversive fundamental elements in political disguise. * Principle and integrity. Seasoned leaders who can fulfill their promises. *Leaders by nature. Leaders elected by birthright, free from buying votes and indulgence. *Incarnation. Leaders who understand people and be willing to make a sacrifice. *Commitment. Leaders who will remove deplorable conditions such as road-bridge, pathetic power supply, deteriorating school education, and to calibrate health care. *Visionary. Leaders
who see future in relation to global scenario and make connection. Electorates and Voters for *Birthright principle casting vote as instituted by God without selling *Free and fair election – following the guidelines of NBCC Clean Election *Generation welfare – vision that brings future reality to youth Unity of Nagas *To stand united towards permanent solution and destiny with equal opportunity. *To depend upon Godguided-vision in the journey of the Nagas hereafter. *To conscientiously make unmistaken and noregrettable decision. 4. External Imposition Fundamentally Nagaland is born as a result of bloodshed for human right with a special clause of Art 371:A in the India Constitution. And from the inception, Nagaland is uniquely known as a land of Christians with churches, prayers, singing songs, in-out church activities, Sunday worships, Christmas celebration and all other biblical practices. A prayer normally precedes every major gathering (regardless political and social events) including the Prime Minister or President of India visiting Nagaland. Alongside other faiths in existence, Christianity is the undisputed practice of faith of the land, not as an imposed or imported but at our own volition. In the event of the proposed Good Governance Day on December 25 which is the day of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ and celebrated universally, by the Honorable Prime Minister of Indian, Shri Narendra Modi, Christians view the overturn with an apprehension of its consequence as it is (1) the highest celebration which is already a cultural day of Christians of the land, (2) honoring the Day by all communities in the state including other faiths by suspending businesses, government office and normal activities, and on the whole, (3) it is a recognized universal and international holiday as Christmas. In addition to Christ-
mas Day as Good Governance Day, other looming impositions to be forcibly imposed through government functionary, once a Hindu fundamental party takes over Nagaland, are obviously and openly (1) Ban of cow slaughtering which is against Naga culture of food habit. (2) Sunrise chanting (Bande mataram/surya mataram) which is a worship of God’s creation. (3) Imposition of Yoga in schools in the form of exercise which is a ritual of Hindu attribution. (4) Idolization and objectifying Naga mountains and rivers with Hindu ritual (red/black) ribbons as sacred and forbidden objects. (5) Introduction of saffron culture, and wrist thread (surakshit chekra). (6) Rampant Influx of painted faces of Hindu priests and sadhus across Nagaland. (7) Imposed Hindu temples by byways and highways of Nagaland. (8) Stationing scary Hindu idols in all conspicuous points throughout Nagaland. The Bible says about these lifeless idols or gods who cannot see, speak, and hear (Ps 115:4-8). (9) Ritual and function of renaming and hindunising Naga names. All this fanatical ideology will weaken and uproot biblical and indigenous values of the land by and through our own leaders who are hired by the ruling government of India with money, facility, political power, and radical imbued philosophy of RSS and VHP . Alas! The future of our youth and younger generation will be brainwashed and swept away by the flood of election money with hidden contents. Nagaland will not regret of irreparability if the Nagas wake up and make a conscientious decision with NO to what is swallowing Nagaland and YES to what is saving Nagaland. Therefore, in view of the above expressed opinion, the people of Nagaland, as a united Voice of Christians, would welcome any healthy national or global agenda that would calibrate the condition of the people. But it is
to be asserted and reasserted that any forced imposition infringing the age-long practices of the land would hurt the civil sentiment, create unhappiness and bring ungrateful attitude towards the ruling government of India. Repeatedly, we strongly protest against hidden agenda of impositions as cited as above. Obviously, the imposition may also invite radical repercussion of international community which, we hope, Indian leadership would sensibly avoid by promoting peaceful coexistence of unity in diversity. Remember what the lord Jesus said: “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self ? (Luke 9:25).

Electricity billing system at Saksi Tuensang HQ
Sir,
Recently, there was a jeopardized billing structure concerning the Saksi NAP sector (13th wad) of Tuensang town HQ with the unprecedented rise without pondering towards the consumers’ entities of Saksi ward. The concern department of the district, though supplemented with enough proves where, the present consumers of the ward are all the evidence which it would not try to consider, and why? Till the last paid months and for years, Saksi sector was routine under Sub-division (I) Tuensang (E.E power deptt.) where it maintain uniformity or was at par with the wide range complex jurisdiction under the mention sub-division officer and this is due to the ‘matter of reality’ that the load sharing and power connectivity/supply of NAP sector is under the same source of supervision with the out-post areas which includes more than 20 villages. The fact is that unlike other wards consumers of the town which are under E.E Sub-division (II), the 13th ward though under the same demarcation, the power linkage is totally unrelated and we are compelled to harshly enjoy the facility of the out-post power links where there is continuous load shedding and power disruption due to lack of proper supervision. Now, all of sudden, we were put under SDO div-2 without prior accumulation of certainties while issuing the recent billing structure. Hence, the public remains confronted over this issue of bias development by the department and have also deliberated to the concern office with back reference but it remained without any adherence but to our dismay the bill was revised again with higher rates re-issued. My sincere appeal to the executive Engineer electrical, dept of power to take this matter of general grievances under very special terms without creating any confusion among the consumers to revalidate the billing system of NAP sector under SDO div-1 as previously it was with average rates, and not under the SDO div-2 where we are not related in terms of power linkage. Nato Y. Chang, Saksi (13th ward), Tuensang Town

AAP hits out NPF rival groups Trg on ‘fish farming practices in Nagaland’
DIMAPUR: Drawing attention to the contention between two opposing groups of the NPF party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Nagaland unit said it was shocked to note the claim made by three times chief minister and present Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio that 40,000 people attended the NPF general convention held at DDSC stadium on September 20. In a press note AAP state unit convener, Dr. S. Amos Lkr said this was opposite to what Rio’s adversary Kuzholuzo (Azo) Neinu said while speaking at the NPF Dimapur division office, Landmark Colony Dimapur. On the contrary, Azo claimed that 80% of the people who attended the convention were nonNagas with no voting rights from the adjoining areas of Assam, Dr. Amos said. Azo had also hit out at the rival group by accusing them of being “a pack of wolves in sheep clothing”. In this regard, AAP wondered as to whether those people who attended the rally would be able to vote for NPF led by Rio in the coming Assembly Election, 2018. AAP termed it as a “political drama inten-
tionally done by corrupted politicians to misguide innocent Nagas of Nagaland who has been suffering in the hands of hypocrites for the last fifteen years of NPF misrule.” On the statement made by Dr. Shurhozelie, during the NPF central consultative meeting at Kohima that-- “if they (rival group) provoke us too far, we may be compelled to open the corruption files openly”. In this regard, AAP asked Dr. Shurhozelie as to why he had been mum for the last 15 years “when robbery was committed under his nose. Why he is coming up with this revelations at this crucial juncture when Nagas suffered for 15 years in the hands of this two shameless money giants according to him.” A A P s a i d i f “ D r. Shurhozelie was true to himself then he should cooperate and coordinate with the CBI investigation which has recently started on PDS multi crore scam of Nagaland against his former chief minister and present Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio and his defacto chief minister – one Vinay Kumar Sethi alias notorious Tinku”. AAP observed that the
multi-crore scams which was carried out under the name of non-existing locals would not lead to its conclusion, unless and until “the kingpin, notorious smugglers of essential commodity Tinku Sethi is not pinned down by investigating agencies.” It said, Dr. Shurhozelie, as a conscious keeper of the NPF party, must cooperate and coordinate with the investigating agencies so that Nagas of Nagaland will get rid of this type of devilish forces who were eating up the fruits of Naga society, so that Nagas of Nagaland would get their due share of essential commodities like rice, sugar, dal, wheat, kerosene in cheap affordable rates.” As NPF stood for safeguarding the interest of the Nagas, AAP asked Dr. Shurhozelie “to file a PIL against Tinku Sethi, who was the main conspirator…” It also alleged that “Tinku Sethi was involved in a murder case way back in the year 1997 (23rd April 1997)” but was not arrested due to his alleged association with the political bosses of NPF despite an arrest warrant being issued against him on February 19, 2008.

ADB plans to increase annual lending to India NEW DELHI, SEP 27 (IANS): The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday said it plans to raise its annual lending to India to a maximum of $4 billion to support the country to accelerate inclusive economic transformation. ADB’s programme in India will focus on three main pillars of activity during a five-year period -boosting economic competitiveness to create more and well-paid jobs, improved access to infrastructure and services, and addressing climate change and improving climate resilience, the multilateral funding agency said in a statement. “About 85 per cent of lending will be focused on transport, energy and urban infrastructure and services. Other finance will be aimed at public sector management, agriculture, natural resources and rural development as well as skills development and urban health.” The planned lending level, which includes pri-
vate sector operations, compares with an average of $2.65 billion a year in loans extended in 2012-16. It will be complemented by technical assistance to help undertake strategic studies, build capacities and prepare projects, increasing from the current average of $6.6 million in 2013-16. ADB will also explore co-financing opportunities, including climate funds for relevant projects, it said. “ADB’s new five-year partnership with India supports the government’s goal of inclusive and sustainable growth grounded by economic structural transformation and job creation with an increased focus on low-income states,” said Kenichi Yokoyama, ADB Country Director in India. “We aim to assist transformative investments, deliver holistic solutions removing sectoral boundaries and demonstrate high value addition of our assistance in terms of innovation, timeliness, efficiency and
quality,” he said. India has been growing at an average rate of more than 7 per cent since 2012, putting it among the world’s fastest growing large economies. It has also more than halved its poverty rate since 2004 to 21.9 per cent and has achieved most of the Millennium Development Goals. “To accelerate such positive trends requires that the country create more high quality jobs, since half of India’s workforce is based around agriculture, which is still marked by low productivity and incomes. Infrastructure continues to be a major bottleneck, in which ADB has identified an investment shortfall of $230 billion a year,” it said. ADB will help expand infrastructure networks for transport, energy and urban centres along economic corridors, enhance corridor business environment and address skills shortages to support industrialisation, it said.

In this regard, the house appealed to the NBCC to request the Naga Christians and the churches in every town and village to detail their pastors and deacons to every polling station to lead in prayer on the day of polling.

With the desire to enable the Naga people to understand the seriousness and commitment of GoI to resolve the vexed issue, the WC delegation invited R.N. Ravi for the next round of talks to be held in Nagaland. In this regard, WC said that the next round of talks would held in Nagaland by October wherein both the sides are expected to touch serious and substantive issues. “At this crucial stage in our turbulent history, the Working Committee of six NNPGs appeal for prayer support and solidarity of our people,” the media cell stated.

ZTYO strongly appealed to the state government to address the issue raised by the Emlo-To Public Organisation at the earliest.

RBI to keep rates steady in October, cut growth forecast BENGALURU, SEP 27 (Agencies): The Reserve Bank of India will hold policy steady at its October 4 meeting, and well past next year, amid weak economic growth and signs inflation may soon overshoot its target, a Reuters poll found. Asia’s third-largest economy started losing momentum after the government scrapped 86 per cent of currency in circulation late last year, hurting demand in India’s cash-reliant economy, and the slowdown was compounded by the implementation of a new tax system. In August, despite a
neutral policy bias, India’s central bank cut the key policy rate after lowering its economic growth forecast in June to 7.3 per cent from 7.4 per cent for the current fiscal year. The latest poll of 60 economists showed although the RBI will hold its key repo rate at a sevenyear low of 6 per cent next week, it will downgrade its growth forecast again following disruptions caused by the new tax. Introduced July 1, the national tax system caused confusion over product pricing and pushed activity in India’s private sector into contraction.
MALT serves ultimatum on PHE...
(From p-1) Stating that the citizens of Mangkolemba have patiently waited for a long time, the MALT, however said that even after the transfer order was issued two months ago, there was still no SDO at PHED Mangkolemba. MALT stated that absence of SDO has led to many problems in the implementation of various programmes and in smooth functioning of the department. Questioning the reason behind the continuous and prolonged absence of the said officer, the MALT asked whether the responsible HODs were aware of the loophole. “It only shows the serious irregularities and mismanagement in the functioning of the department,” MALT said.

India is the second largest telecom market in the world with 1.2 billion telecom users and 450 million internet users, he added. The telecom industry generates 4 million direct and indirect employment. “In the past few years, the government has put the spotlight formally on technology”. The government has already started stakeholders’ consultations on the new telecom policy. IT and telecom currently contribute 16.5 per cent to the GDP and there are immense possibilities of increasing its share,” the minister said. “With the National Telecom Policy 2018, the Indian telecom market will cross $6.6 trllion by 2020,” he added. Sinha further said that the government is taking a number of steps for further augmentation of the ease of doing business.

ICCU,” Ambani said at Reliance Communications’ (RCOM) annual general meeting here. “It is a systemic threat for government, for its revenues, it’s a systemic threat for our banking sector and it is what I call creative destruction of a sector,” he said. Noting that over the years as the number of operators coming to six from over over a dozen, he said there was a sharp erosion in competitive landscape where nearly all global companies who were here have exited. “I am sure they see things that allow them to write-off large amounts of money and exit India. It cannot be the power of the market that is forcing them to leave but it has got to be from other dimensions of the sector which is forcing them to leave,” he said. Ambani said fresh lending to the sector has completely halted after Reserve Bank’s caution to banks in April and wondered how can the oncesunshine sector maintain service quality as it requires Rs 1 trillion in investments annually. Warning that the industry is heading towards a monopolistic situation, he said “If customer is supreme and consumer is king, can we afford to be an oligopoly, a duapoly or a monopoly?” Ambani claimed that RCOM, which has a debt of Rs 45,000 crore and has been given a moratorium till this December, has the support of all its lenders including the Chinese ones and promised to get the company back.

Saudi women celebrate end of driving ban Riyadh, Sep 27 (IANS): Overjoyed Saudi women celebrated on Wednesday after King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a historic decree allowing them to drive in the Kingdom. The decree is slated to take effect from June 2018. The announcement was reported late Tuesday by the state-run Saudi Press Agency and state TV. Praise for the move poured in from inside the Saudi kingdom as well as abroad. Until now, only men were issues licences and women who drove in public risked being arrested and fined. Manal al-Sharif, an organiser of the Women2Drive campaign who was earlier imprisoned for driving, said on Twitter that Saudi Arabia would “never be the same again”, reports the BBC. The hashtags “I am my own guardian” and “Saudi Women Can Drive” quickly gained traction on
social media. US President Donald Trump said it was a positive step towards promoting women’s rights. US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert called the move “a great step in the right direction”. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres echoed that sentiment. Saudi activist Loujain al-Hathloul, who was detained for 73 days in 2014 for flouting the ban, tweeted “thank God”. Campaigner Sahar Nassif told the BBC from Jeddah that she was “very, very excited - jumping up and down and laughing”. Saudi Arabia’s US ambassador, Prince Khaled bin Salman, said it was “an historic and big day” and “the right decision at the right time”. The change will not be implemented immediately as the kingdom has no infrastructure for women to learn to drive or obtain drivers licenses.

Bangkok, Sep 27 (AP): A Thai court Wednesday sentenced ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in absentia to five years in prison for alleged negligence in a money-losing rice subsidy program. Yingluck, who says the charges are politically motivated, is believed to have fled the country last month before the court session at which the verdict initially was to have been delivered. Yingluck’s government was overthrown in a military coup in 2014. She and her supporters said she was innocent and was persecuted as part of an effort to dismantle the political machine of her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a telecommunications tycoon. Thaksin was toppled from power by a 2006 military coup after being accused of abuse of power, corruption and disrespect for the country’s monarchy. He is living in self-im-
posed exile to avoid serving a prison term for what he calls a politically motivated 2008 conviction on a conflict of interest charge. Yingluck, who inherited the leadership of Thaksin’s political machine and was elected prime minister in 2011, became a proxy target for his enemies as well. The rice subsidy scheme was a flagship policy that helped Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party win the 2011 general election.
raids on police posts that unleashed a surge of communal bloodshed. The military’s sweeping reprisal has left hundreds dead and sent nearly half a million Rohingya refugees fleeing to Bangladesh, where they have described a campaign of army-led violence the UN says amounts to ethnic cleansing. Myanmar’s army has rebuffed the accusation and defended its operation as a proportionate crackdown on the Rohingya “extremist terrorists”, while highlighting the plight of other groups, such as Buddhists and Hindus, swept up in the unrest. On Wednesday the army lifted its tight net over the conflict zone to fly reporters to the area in northern Rakhine where the mass graves of Hindus, including many women and children, were exhumed earlier this week. It is the first time the military has organised a press trip to the area, where media restrictions have made it difficult to verify a whirlwind of accusations
over who is driving the violence. Displaced Hindus in Bangladesh and Myanmar, unable to contact their families, fear the worst as search efforts continued Wednesday for around 50 other villagers. Witnesses from Kha Maung Seik, known locally as Fwaira Bazar, said blackclad attackers stormed their community on the morning of August 25, beating and binding the men before driving everyone into the forest. “After they took us to the hills, they butchered everyone. I saw it with my own eyes,” said Promila Sheel, 15, at a small Hindu village in Cox’s Bazar near the sprawling Rohingya camps. She said more than 100 people were killed - including her husband and three other family members. The corpses were unceremoniously dumped in freshly-dug pits, Sheel added. The latest convulsion of violence has deepened already bitter hatreds between various ethnic groups
in Rakhine, where tensions have simmered for years. The women who survived the massacre did not identify the masked attackers as Muslim militants, but said they were targeted because they were Hindus. Rohingya sympathetic to the militant cause reject allegations their fighters were responsible for massacring civilians. In a tent near Kutupalong refugee camp, an alleged Rohingya militant flanked by supporters accused Buddhist mobs of carrying out the attacks and pinning the blame on the fledgling Muslim movement. “They are just trying to tarnish our image,” said the man, requesting anonymity to protect his identity from Bangladesh authorities. “We never give the moghs (ethnic Rakhine Buddhists) or the non-Muslims a hard time without any valid reason. They are lying to make us look like the bad guys.”
Colombo, Sep 27 (PTI): A Sri Lankan high court Wednesday sentenced to death seven persons for kidnapping, raping and killing a schoolgirl in 2015 in the Tamil-dominated Jaffna province, an incident that had sparked nationwide outrage. Sivaloganathan Vithya, 18, had gone missing on May 13, 2015 in Punkudithivu, Kaytes after she left home for school. Next day her brother found the body at an isolated spot with her hands and legs tied to logs. A three-member trial bench of the Jaffna High Court sentenced to death the seven accused, including prime suspect Swiss Kumar who had arrived in Sri Lanka to video tape the rape and killing of the girl. The seven men found guilty were also sentenced to 30 years rigorous imprisonment and ordered to pay Rs one million as compensation to Vithya’s family, according to the Sri Lanka Guardian.

London, Sep 27 (Agencies): Iraq’s prime minister has demanded the Kurdistan Regional Government “cancel” the outcome of the referendum on independence that it held on Monday. According BBC news, Haider al-Abadi said he would “never discuss” the result and called on the Kurds to initiate dialogue “in the framework of the constitution”. He also vowed to “impose Iraq’s rule” in all parts of the Kurdistan Region. The referendum’s result has yet to be announced,
but people were expected to overwhelmingly back independence. Kurdish leaders have said a “yes” vote will give them a mandate to start negotiations on secession with the central government in Baghdad and with neighbouring countries. In a speech to the Iraqi parliament on Wednesday, Mr Abadi insisted that he would “never have a dialogue about the referendum” with KRG officials. “If they want to start talks, they must cancel the referendum and its out-
New York, Sep 27 (PTI): Pakistan’s Foreign Minister has acknowledged that Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, the Haqqanis and the LeT are “liabilities” for the country but it does not have the required “assets” to get rid of them. Khawaja Asif said that the US, which is putting pressure on Pakistan to tackle terrorist groups operating from its soil, once used to treat them as “darlings” just 20 to 30 years back. US President Donald Trump had last month criticised Pakistan for its support to terror groups, saying it receives billions in US aid but continues to harbour militants. “Don’t blame us for the Haqqanis (the Haqqani terror network) and don’t blame us for the Hafiz Saeeds (chief of Jamaat-udDawa terror group),” Khawaja Asif said at the Asia Society forum here yesterday. “These were the people
who were your darlings just 20 to 30 years back. They were being dined and wined in the White House and now you say ‘go to hell Pakistanis because you are nurturing these people’,” he was quoted as saying by the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan. It is very easy to say Pakistan is floating the Haqqanis and Hafiz Saeed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. They are liabilities, Asif said. “I accept that they are liabilities, but give us time to get rid of them because we don’t have the assets to match these liabilities and

you are increasing them (our liabilities) further,” the minister said. Pakistan is ready to work with the US for effective management of the Afghan border to stop terrorist infiltration and to facilitate a peace settlement in Afghanistan, he said. Speaking at the forum, Asif said that there was no military solution to the festering conflict in Afghanistan. “Scapegoating Pakistan for all the Afghan ills is neither fair nor accurate. This will only help forces that we are trying to fight collectively,” he said.

come,” he said. The vote was opposed by Mr Abadi’s government and much of the international community, which expressed concern about its potentially destabilizing effects, particularly on the battle against so-called Islamic State (IS). Kurdish Peshmerga forces have helped drive the jihadist group from large parts of northern Iraq since 2014, when the Iraqi army collapsed and lost control of several cities. Mr Abadi said his priority now was to “preserve citizens’ security” and promised to “defend Kurdish citizens inside or outside” the Kurdistan Region. “We will impose Iraq’s rule in all districts of the region with the force of the constitution,” he added. The prime minister also reaffirmed his threat to prevent direct international flights to the Kurdistan Region if Baghdad was not given control of Irbil and Sulaimaniya airports by Friday afternoon.

Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh), Sep 27 (AFP): Rika Dhar watched as her husband, two brothers and countless neighbours were brutally hacked to death with machetes by masked men who stormed their Hindu village in western Myanmar and frogmarched the terrified inhabitants to the hills. “After the killing, they dug three large pits and threw them inside. Their hands were still tied behind them and their eyes blindfolded,” said 25-year-old Dhar in a Hindu camp inside Bangladesh where she fled with her two children. Eyewitnesses told AFP the bloodshed occurred outside their small Hindu village in Kha Maung Seik in northern Rakhine state, where Myanmar authorities have exhumed 45 corpses from mass graves since Sunday. The army says the grim discoveries are evidence of a massacre by Muslim Rohingya militants on August 25, the same day the insurgents launched coordinated

The government paid farmers about 50 per cent above what they would have received on the world market, with the intention of driving up prices by warehousing the grain. Instead, other rice-producing countries captured the market by selling at competitive prices. Vietnam as a result replaced Thailand as the world’s leading rice exporter. Prosecutors argued that Yingluck ignored warnings of corruption in the subsidy program and was guilty of dereliction of duty. Her critics describe the overriding motive of the program as political, an effort to buy the loyalty of rural voters with state funds. Thaksin’s supporters, who delivered him unprecedented electoral victories, believe his only offense was challenging the power of the country’s traditional elite, led by monarchists and the military, and supported by the urban middle class.

he amount that Frances Bean receives from the estate of her father, late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, has reportedly been revealed. As part of her ongoing divorce proceedings against estranged husband Isaiah Silva, court documents are said to show that the 24-year-old Frances earns more than $95,000 a month from her late father’s publicity rights. The documents, obtained by The Blast, allegedly show her earnings between July 2016 and June 2017. They state that the student, model and daughter of the Nirvana frontman and Hole singer Courtney Love, takes $95,496 (approx. £71,149) a month from the rights, and $6,784 in dividends. The papers also declare that she has allegedly outgoings of $206,000 per month, and is worth a total of around. $11.3 million. As part of the divorce proceedings, Silva infamously tried to lay claim to the acoustic guitar that Kurt Cobain played on ‘MTV Unplugged‘. E a r l i e r t h i s ye a r, she also claimed that she “doesn’t f****** care what they did in the ’90s“. “I wasn’t around and it’s not relevant to me,,” she said. “Yes the ’90s were influential, for sure, but it’s just not my cup of tea. Lady Gaga receives sweet ‘get well soon’ gift from Beyoncé
L
ady Gaga has shared a photo of a ‘get well soon’ gift given to her by Beyoncé, after she was forced to cancel gigs due to ill health. Gaga pulled out of Rock In Rio festival earlier this month after being taken to hospital. Gaga herself later tweeted to fans to say: “I was taken to the hospital its not simply hip pain or wear & tear from tour, I’m in severe pain. I’m in good hands w/ the very best doctors”. She also recently shared her story of life with chronic pain from fibromyalgia, a condition which causes pain to spread across the whole body. Now, she has shared a photo of a gift given to her by Beyoncé – an Ivy Park sweater to wear as she recovers. “Not having a good pain day,” she writes in the Instagram caption. “Thank you honey B for sending me this comfy sweatshirt. Keeps me warm outside in a hammock so I can be [with] the trees, and the sky, and the sun and take deep breaths. Feel so lucky to have so
much love.” Earlier this month, Gaga cancelled a gig in Montreal after getting sick whilst singing in the rain in New York. She subsequently postponed her upcoming ‘Joanne’ European tour to 2018. Confirming the cancellation, promoters Live Nation wrote: “Lady Gaga is suffering from severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform. She remains under the care of expert medical profession-
als who recommended the postponement earlier today. Lady Gaga is devastated that she has to wait to perform for her European fans. She plans to spend the next seven weeks proactively working with her doctors to heal from this and past traumas that still affect her daily life, and result in severe physical pain in her body.” Fans are advised to keep hold of their existing tickets until the rescheduled dates are announced. Production begins on $1 bn ‘Avatar’ sequels
P
roduction on four new Avatar films reportedly began in Manhattan Beach earlier this week. Back in April, James Cameron’s four sequels to the mammoth sci-fi epic were confirmed as set for release between 2020 and and 2025. Now, production on the huge undertaking has reportedly began. As Deadline state, the four sequels began their successive shooting in Manhattan Beach on Monday (September 25), with a reported combined budget of over $1 billion. This is all in line with previously reported news from star Sigourney Weaver, who stated back in April that the actual filming of the new films will commence later this year. This year marks eight years since the first Avatar movie hit cinemas, which means Avatar 2 will arrive a full eleven years after the first installment. However, the director isn’t worried about the delay between movies, comparing it to the success of follow-up films such as Terminator 2 and Aliens. “It was a seven-year gap between The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, seven year gap between Alien and Aliens,” he told CNN.
“It’s gonna be obviously more like a ten year gap between Avatar and Avatar 2. But Avatar 2 you are going to with not the promise, but the certainty of three more films beyond that, and that’s a very different concept with the audience. And a lot of the delay has been around creating that overall vision.” Cameron also recently compared the production of the four new films to building the Three Gorges Dam.
“It’s an epic undertaking,” the award-winning director said. “It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life. It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it.” Avatar 3 will hit screens on December 17 2021, while the remaining two Avatar films will be released on December 20 2024 and December 19 2025. Drummer Matt Helders recently met a fan and gave them an update on the new Arctic Monkeys’ album, suggesting that new material could be expected later this year. But now O’Malley appears to have revealed that the record will come out in 2018 instead. O ’ M a l l e y r e c e n t ly spoke to motorcycle web-

Hisor (Tajikistan), Sep 27 (IANS): Away side Bengaluru FC suffered a 0-1 defeat against hosts Istikol in the first leg of the AFC Cup inter-zone final at the Hisor Central Stadium here on Wednesday. For Istikol, Dmitrii Barkov scored the lone goal of the match in the 26th minute through a header after a cross from skipper Fathullo Fathuloev finding his target man in the unmarked area. The goal became the first one conceded by Bengaluru FC after four matches in AFC Cup. Bengaluru FC started the first-half on the front foot, threatening the hosts. Nishu Kumar was left wide open to select his target man for the cross but the ball only ended into the gloves of the Tajikistan side goalkeeper. Nishu occasionally looked to combine well with Sunil Chhetri allowing the skipper take an effort from 22-yard, which partially missed ending up in the bottom corner. The final minutes of the first-half belonged to the away side who maintained possession without causing any threat, trailing 0-1. Istikol initially enjoyed good share of possession with the ball trying to score through too many long range efforts without causing any threat to the Bengaluru FC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. The home side gained momentum from the opening goal forcing the opponents to concede corners at regular intervals. Romish Dzhalilov dribbled the ball past the opposition in the dying minutes of the firsthalf asking questions to the Bengaluru defenders Rahul Bheke and Collin Abranches. The second-half looked nothing different from the first with poor man marking from Bengaluru FC allowing the Istikol defenders control the midfield and the pace of the match. K

Ko l kat a , S ep 2 7 (IANS): Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday batted for the new International Cricket Council (ICC) rule through which players can be ordered off the field if they commit major offences. The ICC had on Tuesday announced that player can now be sent off the field for the rest of the match if a Level 4 offence is committed. Level 1 to 3 offences will continue to be dealt with under the ICC Code of Conduct. “It was introduced by the MCC and there are reasons for that. Lot of difficult situations occurred in low level cricket outside India -- particularly in England or in South Africa. It is a good thing,” Ganguly said. “No one can understand the importance of it (of such move) unless video clippings are seen,” he said while visiting a Durga Puja pandal here.

Real Madrid, Manchester City win in Champions League DORTMUND (GERMANY), SEP 27 (IANS): Real Madrid outclassed Borussia Dortmund 3-1 while Manchester City had to fight hard to overcome a tough Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in their respective matches in the group stage of the 20172018 Champions League football tournament. Real Madrid, winless in their last six visits to Borussia Dortmund, rode on a brace by Cristiano Ronaldo to defeat the former German champions 3-1 at Signal Iduna Park here on Tuesday evening, reports Efe news agency. Real Madrid are now on six points. They share the lead in Group H with Tottenham Hotspur, who won 3-0 away to APOEL Nicosia on Tuesday thanks to Harry Kane’s hat trick. Both Dortmund and APOEL remain without a point. Real Madrid took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of the match in Dortmund, when Gareth Bale capitalised on a perfect pass from Dani Carvajal.
Bale went on to provide an assist to Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal in the 50th minute to make it 2-0 for the visitors. Four minutes later, however, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back for the hosts but Ronaldo scored again in the 79th minute to seal the win. In Donetsk, the highpowered Man City offensive ran into a resilient defence. Coming into the match having scored 20 goals in their last four matches, the English side were held at bay for the first 45 minutes and needed second-half goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling to come away with all three points. With six points, City lead Group F. The second place in the group belongs to Napoli who are on three points. Napoli beat Feyenoord 3-1 on Tuesday, with goals from Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens and Jose Callejon. Shakhtar also have three points but trail Napoli on goal difference. Feyenoord are yet to earn a

Wissam Ben Yedder made history for Sevilla on Tuesday, becoming the club’s first player to score three goals in a Champions League match. The 3-0 win against Maribor boosts Sevilla’s tally to four points and gives them the top spot in Group E, where Liverpool drew
1-1 with Spartak Moscow in Tuesday’s other contest. Liverpool fell behind 0-1 in Moscow when Fernando converted a penalty in the 23rd minute. Philippe Coutinho equalised for Liverpool eight minutes later, but the visitors were denied a second goal. Tuesday’s results leave
Spartak and Liverpool with 2 points each, while Maribor has a single point. In Group G, Besiktas remained perfect, besting RB Leipzig 2-0 in Istanbul to push their points total to six. Ryan Babel and Anderson Talisco scored for the hosts. Three points back sit
Porto, who stunned AS Monaco 3-0 at home with a brace from Vincent Aboubakar and a single strike by Miguel Layun. RB Leipzig and AS Monaco -- a semi-finalist last season -- have a point apiece and the German club enjoys a slight advantage on goal difference.
Yuzvendra Chahal Bengaluru, Sep 27 (PTI): Yuzvendra Chahal has been Glenn Maxwell’s nemesis in the ongoing ODI series and the Haryana legspinner said that the flamboyant Australian’s vulnerability outside the off-stump has been his undoing. Chahal has got Maxwell out on all three days with Maxwell being stumped in back-to-back games. “My plan to Maxwell is not to bowl at the stumps. That’s a wrong area. I tend to bowl outside the off-
stump and I vary my pace. I know that if I can bowl 2-3 dot balls, he will step out and try to play an aggressive shot. However, in order to beat the batsman, the line and length has to be perfect,” Chahal said at prematch press conference. Apart from Maxwell, David Warner despite his poor run of form will remain a threat, reckons Chahal. “Warner is Australia’s key player. When he settles in, he can play the big knock. Although Aaron
Finch scored a century in Indore, Warner is the most dangerous player,” Warner said. “He has the experience of playing in the IPL and his mindset is to attack. If he plays 40-50 balls, he can score 70-80 runs. Our main aim is to get Warner out quickly so that in the middle overs, we can maintain the pressure,” he added. Talking about the edge over Australia, Chahal said Indian spinners made the difference, for they bagged 13 wickets compared to Australian spinners. “Our spinners have taken 13 wickets as compared to the Australian spinners. We have used the conditions much better than them. That is our plus point. Adam Zampa is the only wrist spinner in the team and he is not featuring in the team consistently,” he said. Chahal feels that when batsmen put up a good score, it gives the bowlers more confidence. “If batsmen put up a good total on the board, then it gives the bowlers more confidence to bowl well. In the middle overs, we have bowled pretty well, be
it the Sri Lanka series or in this series,” he said. Chahal is happy that the bowling unit could restrict Australia to under 300 despite a good show by top-order. “In the last game, they were 234 for 2 after 38 overs. From that position, they were restricted to 293. It was a great exhibition by medium pacers at the death. Whatever spell the spinners are getting towards the end overs, we are getting wickets,” he said. On bowling in tandem with Kuldeep Yadav and Bengaluru wicket, Chahal said he knows the UP chinaman for a very long time and both plan things in a better way by deliberating on bowling strategies before the matches. “I know Kuldeep Yadav for a very long time. We have played with and against each other a lot. If I bowl first, then I tell him about kind of assistance the track is providing. If he bowls first, he does the same and what’s the right area to bowl to a certain batsmen,” he said. The newest spin twins are enjoying each other’s success.
