Modi’s call at UN climate summit Pledges to more than double India’s non-fossil fuel target to 400 GW
“What we need is a global people’s movement to bring about behavioural change,” the Prime Minister said. “The respect for nature, the judicious use of resources, reducing our needs and living within our means
UNITED NATIONS, SEP 23 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday gave a clarion call for a “global people’s movement” to bring about a behavioral change to deal with climate change as he made a path-breaking pledge to more than double India’s non-fossil fuel target to 400 gigawatts. In his Independence Day speech, Modi had announced that India will produce 175 GW of non-fossil fuel as part of its commitment to the Paris Climate agreement. Monday’s announcement during Modi’s speech at the global climate summit goes well beyond the pledge of 175 GW. “We must accept that if we have to overcome a serious challenge like climate change, then what we are doing at the moment is just not enough,” Modi told world leaders at the summit

The delegation met finance secretary Rajeev Kumar on Monday and discussed issues related to mergers, wage revision, introduction of full 5 day week, reduction of cash transaction hours, issues related to retirees etc. They said the finance secretary was positive in formation of a committee consisting of all concerned to address the issues arising out of the proposed merger of 10 banks including preserving the identity of all the banks. organised by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres here. In his first engagement at the United Nations, Modi noted that various efforts are being made by different countries to fight climate change and said what is needed today is a comprehensive approach which covers everything from education to values, and from lifestyle to developmental philosophy. “The time for talks is over. The world needs to act now,” Modi asserted in the presence of President Trump, who made an unscheduled appearance at UN summit. Modi said India would
increase the share of nonfossil fuel and by 2022 “we will increase our renewable energy capacity to much beyond 175 GW and take it further to 400 GW.” The Climate Action Summit aims to boost action to implement the Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015. The Paris deal aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
MoRTH directs states, UTs Spl. Correspondent
NEW DELHI, SEV 23 (NPN): Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has asked states and union territories (UTs) to ensure that all pollution under control (PUC) centres upload emission test data electronically to VAHAN database as per guidelines issued in compliance with Supreme Court directions. The ministry has reiterated the necessity of linking all vehicle data with VAHAN database to avoid harassment and inconvenience to citizens. “This information should be available to citizens in electronic form also in m-Parivahan and e-Challan platforms for their convenience,” stated the MoRTH. In a letter to the chief secretaries of all the states and union territories, the Ministry has stressed upon adopting this step urgently especially since the operationalization of certain provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 and the revised provisions for penalties for driving vehicle violating air pollution standards etc.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres opened the Climate Action Summit on Monday by saying: “Earth is issuing a chilling cry: Stop.” Guterres told world leaders that it’s not a time to negotiate but to act to make the world carbon neutral by 2050. “The climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win,” said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement issued before the summit formally opened, which announced that 66 countries have now signalled their intent to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. He wants to limit global temperature increases to a few more tenths of a degree, and he said the world can do it. “The best science,
have all been important aspects of both our traditions and present day efforts. And therefore India today has come not just to talk about the seriousness of this issue, but to present a practical approach and a roadmap,” he added.
according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, tells us that any temperature rise above 1.5 degrees will lead to major and irreversible damage to the ecosystems that support us,” Guterres said. “Science tells us that on our current path, we face at least 3 degrees Celsius of global heating by the end of the century...This is not a climate talk summit. We have had enough talk,” he added. Some 60 world leaders came together at the UN on Monday for a “climate emergency” summit aimed at reinvigorating the faltering Paris agreement, at a time when mankind is releasing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than at any time in history.
AKMWP backs PAC’s anti-collection drive DIMAPUR, SEP 23 (NPN): Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat(AKMWP) has extended support to the Public Action Committee (PAC)’s concluded week-long “Operation Check Gate” against illegal collection at check gates and describing it as “yet another important milestone in the people’s fight against unceasing exploitation of the masses in the state.” This was contained in a press release issued by AKMWP president Neibulie Kiewhuo, general secretary Thejao Sekhose and legal advisor and joint secretary Hukato Chishi. AKMWP further went on to state that the “parasitic and much despised illegal collection/extortion” in Dimapur have remained central to the compelling sky high rocketing price of goods and services which had to be borne by the consumers. The signatories reminded that prices of goods after passing through the “notorious check gates” become mysteriously inflated and at times, the selling price even multiples the original MRP. AKMWP hit out at those involved in “draining the blood of our economy dry.” The signatories reiterated that PAC’s initiative and efforts towards the cause was most praiseworthy and deserved all possible support.
Asserting that ‘Operation Check Gate’ has been its mature and rather subdued conduct, AKMWP appreciated and congratulated the PAC convenor and colleagues, volunteers, NGOs, individuals and everyone involved directly or indirectly in the initiative. AKMWP said it expected any positive change in Dimapur would reverberate throughout the state and to every town and village. “We extend our firm support and help solidarity to the cause,” AKMWP stated, adding that the time was ripe for citizens to consider declaring zero tolerance towards corruption anywhere and unfair trade practices and resolutely refuse to be exploited any further. At this juncture, AKMWP said all eyes were fixed upon the state government and asked if it would act swiftly with sincerity and commitment by fixing responsibility upon the departments and staff caught blatantly violating its directions? It also asked if the authorities would ensure cleaning up of the mess and put in measures to prevent recurrence? AKMWP also urged the government to feel the pulse of the people and take all necessary steps to effect a change in order to secure a peaceful and better future for all.
