NE Summit adopts ‘Nagaland Declaration’ Correspondent
KOHIMA, SEP 23 (NPN): With the objective of carrying forward a connectivity-led development of the North Eastern Region, participants of the ‘4th Connect North East Summit 2017’ under the theme “Act East through Nagaland” on Saturday adopted the “Nagaland Declaration”. On the concluding day of the summit, FICCINEAC chairman, Ranjit Barthakur informed that all participants agreed to focus on four vital issues, based on the discussions held during the two-day event. FICCI, deputy secretary general Arun Chawla in his speech gave a four-point draft of ‘Nagaland Declaration’ which included: North East Implementation Agency: The Summit felt the need to set up a North East Implementation Agency (NEIA) to handle funding of the projects and also put together a team for hands-on monitoring of each project. The proposed NEIA will coordinate with state governments and all relevant agencies, to implement and monitor each vertical

with select private sector partners. The primary objectives of the NEIA will be to streamline implementation and ensure timely completion of projects including development of roads and highways, inland water transport, power, airports etc. NEIA will also work towards opening up connectivity routes with the neighbouring countries including Myanmar, Bangladesh, Buthan and Nepal. High Powered North East Economic Forum: A high powered-North East Economic Forum (NEEF)comprised of the region’s chief ministers, ministers and other relevant stakeholders- will act as a ‘think tank’
for synchronizing planning and efforts for development of the North East especially with respect to connectivity. North East Ring Road: A ring road should be developed connecting all the north eastern states to run parallel with the international borders and would enable border logistics in a way never possible. The proposed road would cover a distance of around 4000 km and could mostly follow existing road alignments wherever possible. Connectivity led infrastructure Revolution in NE: All state capitals in North East need four-lane road connectivity and the on-going four lane of Dimapur-Kohima would have

positive impact on the state. In order to attract investments, the internal infrastructure of a state, including roads, bridges, amenities centre etc. have to be upgraded rapidly. NEC has dedicated 40% of its budget to development of connectivity and has developed various infrastructures across North East. Addressing the summit, Mandalay regional minister of Ethnic Affairs, government of Myanmar, U Sai Kyaw Zaw in his brief special address, said after the democratically elected government formed in Myanmar, the State Councillor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi stressed on the need

to promote and develop cultural relations, education and health. Apart from Manipur, people from Mizoram are visiting Myanmar to promote their cultural and business relations. He further wished Nagaland success for Vision 2030 and invited Nagaland government and entrepreneurs to visit Myanmar for cultural and business relations. Lok Sabha MP, Gaurav Gogoi in his remark, highlighted the huge untapped potential of the North East region, which could be turned into a success story. He lamented that for most of the mainlanders, North East was tagged as underdeveloped region. However, Gogoi said important events like Hornbill Festival in Nagaland and other festivals could change the perspective of the mainlanders. Besides connectivity, Gogoi also highlighted the need to address the unemployment issue that has gripped the region, by creating more employment opportunities. The MP also suggested market controls along the borders to help farmers.
DIMAPUR, SEP 23 (NPN): In a rare dispute between government departments, the department of Geology & Mining (G&M) and the department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (EF&CC) are at loggerheads over collection of royalty on minor minerals. While the two departments continue to hold their ground by citing respective rules and notification, the organisations such as Sand Stockist & Suppliers Union Dimapur (SSSUD) is in a quandary about which department to pay royalty. According to SSUD secretary Nito Sumi, over 100 sand-laden trucks remained stranded at Dilai check gate and New Field Check gate because the sand suppliers could not afford to make the double payments on a single item (sand). In this regard, the SSSUD has appealed to the state government to issue clarification as to which department the sand suppliers ought to pay the royalty. SSSUD has main(Cont’d on p-7)
tained that until the matter was resolved, the union would be left with no choice but resort to “chakka bandh” and stop sand supply. It may be mentioned that in this dispute the main bone of contention is the Nagaland Minor Mineral Concession Rules (NMMCR). According to the G&M department, the state chief secretary, Pankaj Kumar, in a notification dated January 24, 2017, had notified that the state government, in pursuance to notification vide No. GM-5/EXPL-15/2001 dated March 1, 2005 and recommendation of the Review Committee dated November 30, 2016, operationalize the Nagaland Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 2004 framed under Section 17 of the Nagaland (Ownership and Transfer of Land and its Resources) Act, 1990 (Act 1 of 1993) with effect from the date of notification for regulating the grant of quarry licenses, mining leases and other mineral concession in respect of minor minerals and for the purpose connected therewith. However, the department of environment,
forest & climate change (EF&CC) has contended that the Nagaland Minor Mineral Concession Rules (NMMCR), 2005 for regulation of all minor minerals including stones, sand etc. included forest royalty items in Rules framed under the Nagaland Forest Act 1968, Nagaland Jhumland Act 1970 and notified in compliance to the Supreme Court interim orders in the WP (202) of 1995. In an office memorandum (OM) dated September 22, 2017, the principal secretary EF&CC, Lhoubeilatuo Kire, informed that “status quo as of today” would remain in force till confusion over jurisdiction between the statutory Acts of G&M and EF&CC departments was resolved by the committee constituted under the chairmanship of the additional chief secretary & development commissioner. The OM also stated that the EF&CC department would continue to supervise the collection of revenue and regulation of forest transit passes issued over those items by government of Assam and Manipur.

Widening of Diphu River draws controversy
Correspondent
Diphu, Sep 23: The dream project of widening and beautification of Diphu River has hit stumbling block after nearly 70% of the project was completed. Recently the local body of RSS, whose office is located close to the river bank, has expressed its disappointment over the faulty construction and use of inferior quality of materials. The river crisscrosses Diphu town in serpentine curves over a length of around 2000 meters but KAAC authority took up the project of widening and beautification only for a span of 800 meters mostly inside the town. The Rs.8 crore project is funded by NITI Ayog.
have skyrocketed to a threeyear high. The main opposition party has already launched a nationwide agitation against the hike in fuel prices due to “brazen increase” in central excise duty on petrol and diesel. The leaders who addressed the party workers said that crude oil prices were coming down across the world resulting in the reduction in fuel prices. However, in the country, the government was seizing this opportunity to increase the fuel prices to make more money, they alleged. The hike in the prices of petrol and diesel has resulted in the hiking of the essential commodities in the country. It was nothing
but an additional burden to the poor people of the country, they added. Addressing the workers, MPYCC president Amir Hussain said that BJP, which blamed Congress for not controlling price of fuels, has failed to control the price and fuel prices have sky rocketed after they came to power. During the Congress regime, despite high prices in international market, the government provided the fuel at a reduced cost and controlled rates, claimed Hussain. Hike in the fuel prices has led to increase in the prices of all the commodities and increasing number of farmers committing suicide was the consequent of the hike, he alleged.

has been very bad. Over 30 per cent people are immigrants and as a result the indigenous people are fast losing their identity,” said Sharma. “We are fast losing our culture, we are losing our land. Our monasteries and temples have been encroached upon. We are in very serious trouble when it comes to immigrant. So, drawing from my experience in the Northeast, I don’t think any more people should be given asylum or refugee status in India,” the minister added.
Regarding the question of threat to national security by the Rohingyas, Sarma said that India has to believe in what the government said. “We have to believe the government of India because it is privy to all information. When the government of India has on oath submitted before the Supreme Court that they (immigrants) pose a threat to national security, I think we should believe in that. Kerala Christian women to challenge patriarchy
KOTTAYAM, SEP 23 (AGENCIES): For the first time in the history of Church in the state, a joint movement of independent progressive women from various churches in Kerala including Catholic, Protestant and Easter n Churches was inaugurated at a function here on Saturday. In the historically relevant meeting held at the CSI Retreat Centre, the Kerala unit of the Indian Christian Women’s Movement (ICWM) was launched. The forum intends to bring together an ecumenical group of Christian women under the banner ‘Women’s Lives Matter’. The purpose is not creating another organization in society but to form a consensus across boundaries in order to change unjust beliefs, practices and structures that perpetuate patriarchy and accentuate the exploitation of women in the churches and in society at various levels. Speaking on the occasion, writer and social activist S Saradakkutty questioned the unjust patriarchal systems and asser ted the power of women joining hands to

create a new social order. Though the ICWM was launched in Pune in 2014, till now the Catholics were not part of this. “First time the Catholics wo m e n a r e b e c o m i n g part of the movement,” said Kochurani Abraham, a Catholic who is the coordinator of the Kottayam meeting. Kochurani, who is a feminist theologian said
that the movement also aims at involving women more in the impor tant activities of the church like policy making. Though the movement has not taken an open stand against the male domination in Churches, the forum is keen to take up such issues in future. Indian economy in a tail spin NEW DELH, SEP 23 ( AG E N C I E S ) : I n d i a n economy is projected to grow at a lower than expected rate of 6.7 per cent this fiscal due to the “transitory effects” of demonetisation and the GST implementation, according to Paris-based think tank OECD. The Hindustan Times report stated that the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has also revised downwards its estimate for the country’s growth in next financial year (2018-19) to 7.2 per cent. For this period, the GDP expansion was pegged at 7.7 per cent in June. The report said that in India, “the transitory effects of demonetisation and of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) have led to a downward revision in 2017 growth projections, while business investment has remained weak”. The GDP for the first quarter (April-June) of financial year 2017-18 slumped to a three-year low at 5.7 per cent, far lower than 7.9 per cent recorded in the same quarter last year. Interestingly, senor BJP leader and MP, Subramanian Swamy said that the Indian economy was heading for a “major depression” and it can “crash” soon if efforts are not put to revive it. The Rajya Sabha MP
claimed that a year and half ago, he had written a 16page letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi warning him about the economy which is in a “tailspin”. “Today, the economy is in a tailspin. Yes, it can crash. We need to do a lot of good things to revive t h e e c o n o my. E ve n a tailspin can be made to steady. If nothing is done, we are heading for a major depression. There will be mass scale… banks might collapse, factories might start closing,” he said in an interview to CNN-News18 recently. Subramanian Swamy also claimed that India’s growth rate is much lower than what is being presented. He said, “It is lower than what is being told to you, and it is going to decline, according to what I call Samuelson-Swamy theory of index numbers, which tells you how to calculate the correct index numbers.” Subramanian Swamy suggested that to support the revival of the economy, it is important to enthuse the public with immediate change, which would be possible by abolishing the income tax. “Whatever you do, the public must see immediate change. I think first thing we should do is abolish the income tax. It’s such an easy thing to do, but they haven’t done it,” he said.
Insan and Aditya Insan. International alert has been issued on them and teams are conducting raids to nab them,” he said. There were reports that Honeypreet could have escaped to Nepal and could try to flee to another country. Aditya Insan, chief spokesman of the Dera and a close aide of the sect chief, has been absconding since August 25. On Ram Rahim Singh being quizzed by the police regarding Honeypreet, Sandhu did not give a direct reply. “Police investigation
Maramon convention will also come up before the Forum. Susan Thomas, President of CSI women’s fellowship, said that the Forum has been formed neither with the support nor with the blessings of the church. “This is an independent one. In future I don’t know how it will shape up,” said Susan. O m a n a M a t h e w, Chair person of Kerala Council of Churches (KCC) women’s commission said that one aspect that triggered the formation of such a forum was the safety issues faced by women. Omana who belongs to the Mar Thoma church also said that issues like discrimination of women in the church and denial of personality development of women are also some other factors. Jaisy Karingattil, Vice President of the KCC, said that the efforts for the formation of the forum began over six months back. ‘There was discrimination for women in many churches. But now it’s changing. The Orthodox church has now started allowing voting rights for women at Parish level,” said Daisy who belongs to Orthodox Church.
Gurugram, Sep 23 (IANS): A district court on Saturday granted the CBI custody of the three accused arrested by Haryana Police in connection with the killing of seven-year-old student Pradhuman Thakur of Ryan International School here earlier this month. As the 12-member Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team approached a local court for the custody of the arrested accused, the court allowed one-day custody of bus conductor Ashok Kumar, 42, employed with Ryan school, who the police initially claimed had committed the heinous crime. Two Ryan officials -North India head Francis Thomas and HR head Jeyus Thomas -- also arrested in connection with the September 8 murder of the Class II student, will remain in CBI custody till September 25. Ashok Kumar was booked for murder and under the POCSO Act, and the Ryan officials were arrested under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act. “On our request in the case related to alleged

Mulayam skips SP meet; Akhilesh says his blessings are with him
New Delhi, SEP 23 (AGENCIES): Ar vind Subramanian took over as CEA on October 16, 2014 for a term of three years. The Finance Minister o n Sa tur day exte nd e d the tenue of Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian for another year. His term was supposed to end in October. He took over as CEA on October 16, 2014 for a term of three years. This extension will mean his term would end in October 2018. The Ministry had, earlier in the week, denied that Subramanian was resigning after media outlets reported he might do so before his tenure was completed. Subramanian’s term as CEA has been marked by dynamic suggestions and analysis to do with the economy — including coining of the term ‘JAM trinity’ (for Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) and elaborating on its benefits.
L u ck now, S ep 2 3 (IANS): Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday did not turn up for the 8th state convention of the party he formed 25 years back, though party president Akhilesh Yadav said his father’s blessings will always be with him. His absence, along with that of his younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav, from the meet signalled once again that all is still not well within the party and the Yadav clan. The father-son ties soured late last year, when Akhilesh Yadav-led a coup against his father, uncle Shivpal and Amar Singh, divesting all the three of their posts in the party and taking over as the party’s national president. Shivpal had on Friday said that he and Netaji (Mulayam) had not received any invitation for the meet. On Saturday, however, Akhilesh got emotional

The team also interrogated some teachers, gardener Harpal and another bus driver Sourav Raghav. Police alleged that the school bus conductor killed the student with a knife as he resisted a sodomy attempt. However, after the arrest of the conductor, his parents and two other Ryan school staffers claimed he was being made a scapegoat. The Haryana Police is also seeking to question school CEO Ryan Pinto and Director Augustine F. Pinto.
He added that Mulayam was his father and that his blessings would always be with him and the party in times to come, too. “My father is with me and will always remain as well.” Mulayam has been relegated to the post of ‘mentor’ in the party since January 1. Mulayam’s close aide and former minister in the state government Mohd Azam Khan exhor ted the cadres to throw their weight behind Akhilesh and asked them to trust the young man.

Asked why Honeypreet was not arrested earlier as she had accompanied Ram Rahim to Panchkula and later to the Rohtak jail, the DGP said: “Until August 25, no case was registered against Honeypreet. But after the arrest of Surender Dhiman, Honeypreet was found to be accused of provoking violence. Therefore, a case was registered against her and search was on to nab her.” Sandhu said the police had information that after the violence in Panchkula, Honeypreet came to the Dera headquarters in Sirsa. Aberration on economy
T
here have been a number of economic summits held in Nagaland during the past one decade, which were essentially about spurring economic activities so as to create a larger and wholesome economy. Economic policies of the state government are either copy paste of those of other states or at best experiments of bureaucratic concepts. The test for such summits is that they are purely governmental in nature or a government-togovernment sharing of ideas and in the case with Nagaland, the dichotomy becomes sharper between policy and practicability. One of the problems is within the government system itself. For one, the bureaucracy has taken it upon itself as the indispensable player in furthering or promoting state economy. This has only led to creation of an exclusive domain of powerful and influential bureaucrats who make policies that seem complex for politicians to understand. This is because politicians are more interested in “now/today” and have less patience for long term benefits. Bureaucratic concepts also mean bending some when convenient and ignoring when inconvenient. This pick and choose has not exactly helped promote the culture for genuine progress. One concept in the past, has been to send ‘chosen’ youths on a study tour abroad to learn more about skill development or in some, politicians and bureaucrats doing the same but after having spent some crores of rupees, there has been no visible change. Today, all those “successful” government-produced entrepreneurs in their thousands are not seen while some continued to draw huge subsidy and other benefits which the policy endowed. The lesson that can be drawn from the experience is that, the government cannot create entrepreneurs. Today, the global environment provides the biggest place for business and governments play a very limited role to that of being a catalyst. The catchword today is competition and to nurture the best or meritorious so that the future is bright. However in Nagaland, government patronage for every venture has created a culture of privileged class which is certainly not the kind of entrepreneurship or business that is practised globally. Such practices show how corrupt and inefficient the system has become where no one in authority be it political or administrative, wants to eliminate a system that brings windfall benefits. Today, foreign collaboration is not about the Centre doing more and states less but about creating the necessary infrastructures and social conditions where start-up companies are focused on high growth areas such as mobility, e-commerce and other vertical specific solutions, thereby creating new markets and driving innovation. Economic development involves attaining progressive degrees of uptrending consumption, robust job creation and growing financial penetration. Financial institutions play a crucial role and this aspect has been often ignored. The problems faced by lending institutions are also self-inflicted by those who loathe being posted to states like Nagaland for various reasons. The other important though not sufficient enough to warrant a freeze on loans , has been the awful manner in which government-sponsored schemes like CM’s Corpus Fund or PMRY have led to very high NPAs in banks. The state, banks and genuine entrepreneurs need to get their act together so that the global concept of promoting and developing economy can be achieved by thinking globally and acting locally.
DailyDevotion The Missionary’s Goal He…said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem…” —Luke 18:31 In our natural life our ambitions change as we grow, but in the Christian life the goal is given at the very beginning, and the beginning and the end are exactly the same, namely, our Lord Himself. We start with Christ and we end with Him— “…till we all come…to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…” (Ephesians 4:13), not simply to our own idea of what the Christian life should be. The goal of the missionary is to do God’s will, not to be useful or to win the lost. A missionary is useful and he does win the lost, but that is not his goal. His goal is to do the will of his Lord. In our Lord’s life, Jerusalem was the place where He reached the culmination of His Father’s will upon the cross, and unless we go there with Jesus we will have no friendship or fellowship with Him. Nothing ever diverted our Lord on His way to Jerusalem. He never hurried through certain villages where He was persecuted, or lingered in others where He was blessed. Neither gratitude nor ingratitude turned our Lord even the slightest degree away from His purpose to go “up to Jerusalem.” “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master” (Matthew 10:24). In other words, the same things that happened to our Lord will happen to us on our way to our “Jerusalem.” There will be works of God exhibited through us, people will get blessed, and one or two will show gratitude while the rest will show total ingratitude, but nothing must divert us from going “up to [our] Jerusalem.” “…there they crucified Him…” (Luke 23:33). That is what happened when our Lord reached Jerusalem, and that event is the doorway to our salvation. The saints, however, do not end in crucifixion; by the Lord’s grace they end in glory. In the meantime our watchword should be summed up by each of us saying, “I too go ‘up to Jerusalem.’ ”

Post-mortem ‘Clean election’ or ‘no election’? The cancer called IBI
t is a very common thing these days to see arguments in our local newspapers every day. Arguments between different aboveground political parties, arguments between different underground parties, condemnation between different tribal Hohos, arguments arising due to misunderstandings or egotistical clashes, corruption and unemployment etc, the list goes on. Nagaland seems to be down with sickness; and it is very surprising that this sickness seem to affect the indigenous Naga people only and that too at each other. I wonder why these intellectual organisations and groups don’t do anything to check the cancer growing inside Nagaland - the cancer which is multiplying in terms of hundreds and thousands of new individuals each day and eating away the economy. This cancer called illegal Bangladeshi Miya is a threat to the immediate future of the Tribal Naga population; and yet, this issue remains almost a taboo when it comes to tackling or facing it. I have overheard a few young people here and there, who dared to discuss about this cancerous issue with such enthusiasm over a couple of drinks; but well, that too is forgotten the next day with the onset of a huge hangover. Come to think of it, Nagas seem to have this hidden talent of true expression when coupled with a few alcoholic beverages. Imagine what could have been accomplished if Nagaland had a fixed number of regulated licensed wine stores selling pure unadulterated alcohol. Like they say, haters will hate and in the same ideology, drinkers will drink no matter how dry our tiny state is. It is just a matter of quality. Anyway, as I was actually discussing, these illegal Miyas need to be checked. I don’t argue upon the fact that a negligible percentage of the population of Miyas in Nagaland might actually be citizens of India, but the remaining huge majority is illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who has acquired residential proof certificates form corrupt officials in

Assam. They then migrate over to Nagaland through Dimapur district and spread all over the state. We all know how this is happening, but why are we silent? Why is the government silent on this infiltration of our land? Why is the administration silent? Why are the student bodies led by NSF silent about this cancer? Why are the wards and colonies led by the chairmen and its GBs silent? And where have you disappeared, Naga Mothers’ Association, when these IBIs are taking away the future of your young ones? ACAUT, are you only against illegal taxation and corruption? And to the NSCN (A-Z); I want to ask, aren’t you fighting for the rights, sovereignty, ethnicity, land and future of the Nagas? Why aren’t yopu initiating any action, when this cancer is eating away the future you claim to fight for? I read in the papers and it was very disturbing to learn that a local Naga family was brutally attacked by non-local youths with wooden planks being high on narcotics. Tears of anger and frustration welled up in my eyes, but all I could do was wipe it away and accumulate my morning dose of stress. The police didn’t mention names but only stated the culprits as non-locals and further investigation, blah! Blah! Blah! But news being circulated in the social media indicated them to be Miyas. Ask yourself, how many of you Nagas are disturbed to hear this news and what are you willing to do to secure our future? I am pretty sure the Naga NGOs and communities will start submitting condemnation press releases as usual in the days to come and our local dailies will be flooded with such condemnations. It is just my opinion in saying this, but mere condemnation will not work anymore because we are seeing symptoms of later stages of Cancer. It is time to start chemotherapy and radiation. Start checking Miyas residing in your communities and stop accommodating all illegal Miyas from the colonies. The administration and municipal council officials need to

here are mainly Four groups of people who are responsible for the ever swelling number of IBIs in Nagaland, namely:1) The Khaki Wallas (Policemen): Always in haste to make quick buck, never really do checking properly unless there’s something to fill their pocket. Destroys alcohol and intoxicants belonging to desperate naga youths and single women who are in the business for survival but let IBIs escape in checkgates even without documents, in exchange for few hundred bucks. Nagaland check gates should be renamed as “IBI escape gate”. Today, Nagaland is pregnant with IBIs, thanks to Nagaland police’s leniency. 2) District Administration: Rampantly Issues ILP in exchange for few thousand bucks. As per reliable source, in the last 2-3 years around 80-90k IBIs who were accorded Indian citizenship were of Nagaland govt origin. Nagas future is in their pocket. 3) NPGs Works hand-in-glove with the IBIs, even to the extend of deputing them as their tax collector. Act as the guardian and defender

he government of India has made it mandatory to provide Aadhaar number while opening bank account and carrying out financial transaction by 31/12/2017 after which every account will cease to be operational until bank accounts are linked to Aadhaar. With Aadhaar number, the government can detect many depositors who do not pay income tax. But Nagas are tribal people and need not use Aadhaar to detect income tax. In place of Aadhaar card, verification can be easily done with PAN card or electoral roll photo identity card. Many Christians are sceptical about Aadhaar but no individual or Christian authority says openly about Aadhaar. We are doubtful about the Aadhaar card and its programmes for the following reasons. 1. “open doors” is a nondenominational mission supporting persecuted Christians in over 60 countries. It has recorded 316 persecution and incident against Christians in India in the first four months in the year 2017. It has reported that the extremists openly declare that
stop issuing long term trading and work permits, etc. Okay I am getting too excited, but all I want to say is that, you and I know what needs to be done in orde4r to protect our teenyweenie state we call our home, from beginning another Tripura. There are a countless number of intellectual people in Nagaland from all the 16 tribes, countless intelligent young and old officers in all the departments of the government, countless number of equally intelligent unemployed youths and most importantly, a countless number of NGOs and organisations who are more than capable to initiate mass checking and deportation with help and resources from the administration. Wake up people and start planning to secure our homeland from these illegal foreigners whose main objective is to overtake our land. The government of India has already permitted the states to deport illigela immigrants especially from Bangladesh for the sake for national security and I feel that we have a role to play because it is about our very own land and future. Start employing our local youths for petty works, start buying local and start buying from local entrepreneurs. Support young Nagas to understand the importance of manual labour and setting up small businesses. We might have to pay a bit more wage, we may have to cut down on our haggling, there might be few issues with the construction and furniture, etc, but I am sure we will learn to perfect it. Take away the livelihood of these IBIs and at the same time enforce strict means to deport them out of Nagaland. No one can do it alone, but together as Nagas, possibly we just might. I am sure this article will be read and forgotten by many, but I hope that again many will take it seriously and actually do something about this issue. As far as I am concerned, I am willing to give my all to secure the future of Nagaland when the initiative arises. A. Jamir, Dimapur
of IBIs. If you don’t believe, go to new market Dimapur, every IBI shop have atleast one UG Dada. Naga sovereignty is in their SUVs and Bungalows. 4) Sumis and Angamis of Dimapur area: By virtue of ownership of vast stretch of land, they don’t posses even an iota of love for the land. Land, for them is easy come and easy go item. Keeps Miya family as the caretaker of the vast stretch of land, which they hardly visit. Keeps atleast one Miya as maid(s). Prefers Miya over naga for manila works. Sometimes these Miya maids cohibits with their wife and daughters that out of compulsion, enters into matrimonial alliance with Miyas. Eventually properties are also shared with them. Sells land to Miyas at minimal rate in reward for their services rendered. Accords tribal names and tittles upon Miyas. Their love for Miya is unconditional. Miyas and Sumi-Angami of Dimapur area are inseparable, the bond is as thick as blood. Ngukato K. Tsuipu

n 1946, the Naga National Council (NNC) submitted a four-point memorandum to Jawaharlal Nehru, the President of the Indian National Congress who later became the first Prime Minister of India. The last point of the memorandum stated, “The Naga tribes should have a separate electorate”. Nehru was non-committal. Election was unknown to Nagas. Nagas did not want election. Nevertheless, should election be inevitable, Nagas desired to have separate electorates. Nagas desired that they elect their own leaders. They feared that mixed electorates might corrupt the electoral system. The Naga leaders of yore were very far-sighted. What they feared has come true in a span of half a century of statehood. In 1952, when the republic of India announced the first elections (simultaneous Lok Sabha and State assembly elections), the NNC called for voluntary nonparticipation in that election. No Naga filed nomination and no Naga cast vote in that election. The response to NNC’s call was total. That was testament to Nagas’ rejection of Indian constitution. It was not a boycott in that; Nagas had nothing to do with Indian election. Nagas declared separate sovereignty for Nagaland before Indian attained independence. In 1957, the republic of India held her second general elections (another simultaneous Lok Sabha and State assembly elections including Assam State Assembly election). NNC gave another call not to participate in that election too. By that time, some moderate NNC leaders had deserted NNC and formed the Reforming Committee.
The Reforming Committee decided to field its candidates for the three Assembly seats allotted to Naga Hills Autonomous District Council in Assam Legislative Assembly. NNC had earlier rejected Autonomous District Council status. Mr. Khelhoshe Sema, Mr. Chubatemsu Ao and Subedar Satsuo Angami filed their nomination papers. No other candidates filed nomination. So, they were declared elected unopposed. In 1960, the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) signed sixteen-point agreement with the Government of India and created Nagaland State in the Union of India. Many Nagas died defending the sovereignty of Nagaland. Accepting statehood was betrayal of blood, sweat and tears. The first Nagaland State general election came in 1964. A section of Nagas participated in that election. The poll result recorded 50.51% voter turnout, which Nagas knew was from massive proxy voting. Nagas strongly believed in the divine lead in their defense of sovereign Nagaland. Participating in Indian sponsored State election was not what God had planned for Nagas. Nagas disobeyed God. Corrupt elections set in, giving rise to corrupt governments. By 1980s, Nagaland imported methods like buying vote by using money power and booth capturing by muscle power from mainland India. Hunger for power made the elected members change sides and governments changed every now and then. Elections in Nagaland came to be criminalized thoroughly. (To be concluded) Dr. K. The necessity evil of Nagaland
“W
e should chase out all these illegal Immigrants from Nagaland.” Okay, done! Now what’s next? We have technically chased out our “Ali” the shopkeeper. “Mushai” the Mason, “Raju” the helper. Our rickshaw puller, our clothes merchant, basically we have closed down the whole of New market, Hazi park and not forgetting the countless cheap labourers, domestic helpers, our “chamchas” and for the politicians, practically a large vote bank which could have helped him win an election. So my question is, suppose we did deport all the IBIs out of the state (which means we’ve got to admit, literally bringing our economic and daily life to a halt) will we survive without them? Are we prepared with a response to cope up to such a gap that will arise out of it? Are we prepared to replace the IBIs
the people small and great, rich and poor, slave and free to have a mark placed on their right hand or their forehead. No one could buy or sell without this mark, that is, the beast’s name or the number that stand for the name.” This calls for wisdom whoever is intelligent can figure out the meaning of the number of the beasts, because the number that stands for the name of someone. its number is 666. As per the government of India order, we cannot sell or buy without Aadhaar card after 31/12/2017. There is no privacy . Even mobile SIM cards to be verified with Aadhaar by February 2018, with all unlined phones to be deactivated. Christians are all aware of no 666 and it is now knocking on our doors. We appeal to all Christians friends that if your Aadhaar is done, prepare to surrender to the government, if it not done, don’t do it. We further appeal the government of Nagaland to abandon Aadhaar and in place of Aadhaar, let Naga people use PAN card or electoral photo identity. Thejangulie Angami, John Rengma, Shikhu Achumi
by doing the works they were employed in? How many of us are ready to open a shop or work as a labourer or as a domestic helper? I bet there will be a few people interested in doing so. We are really not of the habit of bowing down and serving a master. We all love to be kings and we find pleasure in those IBIs whom we can control to our fancy. We don’t want to open a paan shop, we don’t like to do manual labor. We only look for well paying “respectable” government jobs and leave the rest to any low life that might come by. Then, why do we lament that these IBIs are ruining our society? Who gave them the opportunity to flourish in our state in the first place? Who gives them the patronage and the protection that they could muster such courage to beat up a Local or even the audacity to sexually assault our own sisters?
We talk about those IBIs as if they were just a bunch of parasites sucking our hard earned money and polluting our “pure” society when the truth is we are letting them do it. We are bringing this to ourselves and we alone are responsible for the fate that we are in now. Chasing out the IBI’s is not the solution for our problem. Changing our perspective and our mindset coupled with not only setting up of strict laws but implementing those laws can be the solution for our problem. If only we could put aside our arrogance, ego and laziness and fully understand the concept behind the expression, “Dignity of Labour” and practice it, I tell you half of the IBIs would remain jobless and be forced to return home. But until then, this influx shall ever remain a “necessity evil” in our society. Clement Bujem, Signal Lhomithi Colony, Dimapur

Often misspelled nomenclature of ‘Khiamniungan’ tribe
Sir,
The state of Nagaland has sixteen major tribes, among which Khiamniungan also has its recognised place. It is sad and disheartening to see, read and know that the nomenclature KHIAMNIUNGAN is very often misspelled, not only in local dailies but also in books; GK, Articles, journals, research works and beyond. The word Khiamniungan is composed of three syllables / khiam/niu/ngan/ which means “Great Source of Water” or “Great Water Source”. It is neither Khimungan, khiamungan nor khiamnugan. Writers from different areas/field often has misspelled the community’s name, yes we hold no grudges against anyone but the small mistake of missing letter(s) creates complete different meaning and tend to cause untoward feelings. (From p-1) CTYO president, Kezhanguto Zhotso, also told Nagaland Post all eight persons, temporarily residing in Chumukedima, were involved in attempt to murder. Zhotso said CTYO was not against any religion or communities, but would not tolerate any individual/group that disrupted peace and harmony in its jurisdiction. Meanwhile, CTYO has appealed to all citizens to extend support and co-
operation so as to uproot all anti-social elements. It further requested the public not to spread rumours on social media that could create communal tension and fear psychosis.
Will pursue for disqualification of defected MLAs: NCP D I M A P U R , S EP 2 3 (NPN): Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has affirmed that it would continue to pursue for disqualification of three of its MLAs in Nagaland who had defected to BJP in June 2014. Nationalist Congress Party national secretary cum spokesperson and In charge of North East India, Narendra Verma, while acknowledging the mandate of the Naga people for electing four NCP MLAs in 2013 general election, condemned the defection of three MLAs -- Mhonlumo Kikon, Dr.
TM Lotha and Imtilemba Sangtam -- to BJP. Verma stated that the three MLAs insulted the Naga people mandate. Stating that the matter on three MLAs was at Supreme Court, he said the NCP would vigorously pursue the case and to debar them from contesting the next election.
Meanwhile, NCP leader has acknowledged the “post-poll alliance of the present arrangement” that the NCP in Nagaland has with the Naga People’s Front (NPF) led by Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu. Verma stated that the party would “seriously reconsider for continuing with this arrangement.”

While also appreciating the active participation of the dignitaries and FICCI in particular for choosing Nagaland, Kumar maintained that the sessions on policy, international connectivity, shared energy resources, bio-diversity, tourism and people-to-people connectivity, sub-region economic integration, intra-regional connectivity and leveraging digital connectivity had covered NE connectivity issue in a logistic manner. Many corporate houses, multilaterals and banks showed keen interest to work with Nagaland government and in the region for development of various connectivity issues. (From p-1) Gogoi asserted that since much had been discussed, it was time to talk less and work more. Former Ambassador, Gautam Mukhopadhaya in his address, lauded FICCI for taking the initiative to organize such event, with its focus on developing the neglected North Eastern region. Mukhopadhaya viewed that the North East along with the neighbouring countries needed to strategically enhance commerce and improve market designs. He encouraged entrepreneurs of the region to invest in IT and market food products to other parts of the country. Delivering the valedictory address, Nagaland chief secretary, Pankaj Kumar said that the summit was able to provide the much needed platform for the Government of India and NE states, neighbouring countries and countries having interest in development of the North Eastern region. Kumar said the summit also provided national and international multilateral organizations, private sectors, various public sector organizations to come together and pool in ideas, perspectives and expertise and network in the informal time space to take NE connectivity to the next level. He acknowledged the participation of dignitaries from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Russia and Thailand for providing the broad canvass

He said it was his good fortune to lay the foundation stone of a public toilet in Shahanshahpur village “because sanitation is also a kind of worship for me”. “It will rid the poor of my country of various diseases and the economic burden due to those diseases that result from dirty surroundings. Hundreds of diseases come knocking at your doorsteps because of lack of hygiene,” Modi said. He quoted a Unicef report that each household in India which does not have a toilet spend around Rs 50,000 a year on treatment for different ailments. “It is the responsibility of every citizen and every family to keep their surroundings clean so we are able to build clean villages, clean cities and a clean nation,” Modi said. The Prime Minister urged the people to take cleanliness not only as a mission but also turn into a habit for everyone. Referring to his government’s housing scheme, Modi said he wanted every one in the country to have a roof over their head when in 2022 India completes 75 years of independence.

Targeting the investigative agencies of the gover nment, Sur jewala questioned: “What was CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) doing? What was Research and Analysis Wing (RA&W) doing?” Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, the Congress leader said: “Wife of a terrorist, who is wanted in many terror cases arrives in India to meet her father and then goes back.” “Why she was not arrested? Why no action was taken against her?” he asked. He also said that this shocking revelation was made by Mumbai’s Thane police. He also said cleanliness was worship for him as it could rid the poor of various diseases and a lot of economic burden. “Governance for us is not about votes or winning elections. BJP leaders have cropped up whenever there were questions about links to Dawood Ibrahim. Maharashtra BJP Minister, Eknath Khadse had to resign when there were allegations of his telephonic conversations with Dawood Ibrahim,” he said. “Entire country witnessed when several BJP Ministers and leaders of the Devendra Fadnavis Government recently attended a wedding of Dawood Ibrahim’s relatives,” he added. Iqbal was arrested early on Tuesday by a crack team of the Thane Anti-Extortion Cell headed by former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma who picked him up from his Mumbai home late on Monday night in an extortion case. Congress Rajya Sabha leader Rajiv Shukla termed the matter as very serious and said that it raises questions about the credibility of the central and state governments as well as the central investigative agencies. “...What was Mumbai Police doing? What were the central and Maharashtra government doing? What were the other agencies doing?” he questioned. “It is a very serious issue. Modi: Don’t believe in vote bank politics, nation comes first

New Delhi, Sep 23 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday said the Narendra Modi government should explain how absconding don Dawood Ibrahim’s wife managed to visit Mumbai last year undetected and added that it raises questions about the credibility of the Centre and the Maharashtra government as well as the state and central security agencies. “Wife of Ibrahim, Mehajabin Shaikh came to meet her father in 2016 in Mumbai and the Modi government kept on sleeping,” Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a video message. Surjewala’s remarks came a day after the arrested brother of Dawood, Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar told investigators that his sisterin-law, Mehjabin Shaikh (Dawood’s wife) visited Mumbai sometime in 2016 to meet her father, Salim Kashmiri, before quietly departing. “Indian National Congress demands that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh apprise the nation about the national security failure and circumstances in which wife of a dreaded terrorist entered and left India with complete ease, without being questioned or detained,” Surjewala said. “Let the PM state as to

New Delhi, Sep 23 (PTI): Gold was today weighed down by slackening demand as prices dropped Rs 50 to Rs 30,800 per 10 grams even as the metal strengthened overseas. Demand softness also led to silver tumbling by Rs 200 to Rs 40,500 per kg as industrial units and coin makers kept to the sidelines. The losses, according to traders, would have been higher but for a firm trend overseas that arrested the slide. Easing demand from jewellers and retailers prevailed chiefly in the domestic spot market. Globally, gold rose 0.50 per cent to USD 1,297.10 an ounce and silver 0.27 per cent to USD 16.98 an ounce in New York yesterday. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity shed Rs 50 each to Rs 30,800 and Rs 30,650 per 10 grams, respectively. It had climbed Rs 350 in yesterday’s trade. Sovereign, however, remained unchanged at Rs 24,700 per piece of eight grams in limited deals.

Two years ago, India was touted as a rare bright spot in a gloomy global economy, with GDP growth outpacing a slowing China. But since early 2016, growth has slackened for six consecutive quarters, with India losing the fastest growing economy tag to China for the second straight quarter. Sources said the government is keen to address structural problems facing the economy as well as transient issues with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST is touted to boost growth by up to 2 percentage points, but technical glitches in the first two months of the rollout have created a scare that revenues may fall way short of expectations.

RBI has been intervening in the forex market for the past three months. He is hopeful of moderation of forex in coming days. Putting up a smart resilience against heightened global volatility, the rupee yesterday clawed back its lost territory to recover from its near six-month low and ended a marginal 2 paise higher at 64.79 per dollar. On the stimulus package, the CEA said, it is being worked out and an announcement will be made at an appropriate time. Speculations are rife that government is planning to provide a huge stimulus to various sectors, including power and railways, to revive growth, which hit a 3-year low of 5.7 per cent in the AprilJune quarter.
Ko l k ata , S e p 2 3 (PTI): The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) today reiterated that the telecom sector was under stress and the bank was doing extra provisioning for this. SBI chairman Arundhati in Bhattacharya said, “The telecom sector is undergoing a lot of stress and the bank is extra provisioning due to this.” She said this when asked whether TRAI’s decision to reduce the IUC charges would affect incumbent operators like Vodafone, Airtel and Idea which were already feeling the heat of Reliance Jio’s disruptive move. On the bank’s NPA outlook for rest of the fiscal, Bhattacharya said, “We have probably reached the bottom. Slippages are under control although new sectors like telecom were showing stress”. New Delhi, Sep 23 (PTI): The economy is facing multiple headwinds and there is a need to attack them on various fronts, Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian said on Saturday. “We have lots of challenges ahead... We have seen growth slowing down and investment not picking up. So, we have to attack this problem on many fronts -- exchange rate, public investments while maintaining macroeconomic stability,” he said. He also identified stressed assets as a key area of concern. His statements came soon after the government decided to give him a one year extension. On the appreciation of the rupee, Subramanian said all emerging economies face this problem,

Rohingya villages in Myanmar still being burned: Amnesty
London/Dhaka, Sep 23 (IANS): New satellite images and videos from Myanmar’s Rakhine state show smoke rising from Rohingya Muslim villages, contradicting State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s claims that military operations there have ended, according to Amnesty International. In a statement late Friday, the London-based group said its sources in Rakhine have claimed that the fires, captured in images on Friday afternoon, were started by members of the Myanmar security forces and vigilante mobs, reports the Guardian. The latest violence in Myanmar has sent an estimated 429,000 Rohingya refugees fleeing to Bangladesh in less than a month. “This damning evidence from the ground and from space flies in the face of Aung Suu Kyi’s asser-

tions to the world,” Tirana Hasan, Amnesty’s director of crisis response, said. “Rohingya homes and villages continue to burn, before, during and after their inhabitants take flight in terror. Not satisfied with simply forcing Rohingya from their homes, authorities seem intent on ensuring they have no homes to return to.” Most of those fleeing have ended up in camps in the Bangladeshi district of Cox’s
Bazar, which already had hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees who had fled prior rounds of violence in Myanmar. The latest violence began when a Rohingya insurgent group attacked police checkposts on August 25, that left 12 security personnel dead, the Guardian reported. Th fleeing Rohingya have described indiscriminate attacks by security forces and Buddhist mobs.
New earthquake shakes jittery Mexico
Mexico City, SEP 23 (AGENCIES): A strong new earthquake shook Mexico on September 23, causing new alarm in a country reeling from two still-morepowerful quakes from earlier this month that have killed nearly 400 people. The U.S. Geological Survey says the new magnitude-6.1 temblor was centered about 20 km southeast of Matias Romero in the State of Oaxaca, which was the region most battered by a magnitude 8.1 quake on September 7. It swayed buildings and set off a seismic alarm in the capital, prompting civil defence officials to temporarily
suspend rescue operations in the rubble of buildings downed by September 19’s magnitude 7.1 quake in central Mexico. As rescue operations stretched into Day 5, residents throughout Mexico City held out hope that dozens still missing might be found alive. More than half the dead 57 perished in the capital, while another 73 died in the State of Morelos, 45 in Puebla, 13 in Mexico State, six in Guerrero and one in Oaxaca. Along a 60-foot stretch of a bike lane in Mexico City’s downtown, families huddled under tarps and donated blankets on Sep-
S Korea says natural N Korea quake detected Seoul, SEP 23 (AGENCIES): South Korea’s weather agency on Saturday said a magnitude 3.0 earthquake was detected in North Korea around where the country recently conducted a nuclear test, but it assessed the quake as natural. An official from Seoul’s Korea Meteorological Administration said today’s quake was detected in an area around Kilju, in northeastern North Korea. She says it was clear that the quake wasn’t caused by an artificial explosion. She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office rules. The site of the quake is near where North Korea on September 3 conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in what it said was the detonation of a thermonuclear weapon.
Trump, Kim are like ‘children in a kindergarten’: Russia M O S COW, S EP 2 3 (AGENCIES): Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has likened the war of words between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to a kindergarten fight between children. The North Korean leader earlier labelled Tr um p “ m e nta l ly d e ranged” and a “dotard” after Trump threatened to destroy his country. Tr ump responded with a tweet calling Kim Jong-un “a madman” who “will be tested like never before!” Lavrov said a pause was needed, “to calm down the hotheads”, BBC reported on Friday. “Yes, it’s unacceptable to silently watch North Korea’s nuclear military adventures but it is also unacceptable to unleash war on the Korean Peninsula,” he said. He called for a political process, which he said was a key part of the United Nations Security Coun-
Pak’s anti-graft body freezes bank accounts of Sharif, family L AHO R E , S EP 2 3 (AGENCIES): Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday suffered a major setback after Pakistan’s anti-graft body froze the bank accounts and seized the properties of him and his family members facing corruption and money laundering charges in the Panama Papers scandal. Sharif, 67, stepped down after the Supreme Court disqualified him on July 28 from continuing in his office for dishonesty and ruled that corruption cases be filed against him and his children. The Accountability Court in Islamabad, which is hearing the corruption cases against the Sharif family, on Friday summoned Sharif, his daughter
Maryam and son-in-law capt (retd) Safdar to appear before it on September 26. Sharif, along with his children, is in London to be with his ailing wife Kulsoom who is undergoing treatment for throat cancer. There is speculation in the Pakistani media that the Sharif family may not return to face the NAB corruption cases. The ruling PML-N party, however, insists that Sharif would return once his wife’s health improves. “We have written to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and commercial banks requesting them that since Sharif and his children and son-in-law Safdar are facing the NAB cases, their bank accounts may be cautioned (frozen),” an NAB official told PTI.
Sergei Lavrov cil process. “Together with China we’ll continue to strive for a reasonable approach and not an emotional one like when children in a kindergarten start fighting and no-one can stop them,” he said. The North Korean leader had attacked Donald Trump days after his speech at the UN, in which the US president said he would “totally destroy” North Korea if the US was forced to defend itself or its allies. He also mocked Kim
Jong-un with a disparaging nickname, saying: “Rocket man is on a suicide mission.” But the North Korean leader said remarks by the “deranged” US President convinced him he is right to develop weapons for North Korea. In an unprecedented personal statement, Kim said Trump would “pay dearly” for his speech, which he labelled “unprecedented rude nonsense”. He said Trump had insulted his country in the eyes of the world, and threatened to “surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire.” Experts say this is the first time a North Korean leader has made a direct address to an international audience - and it merits serious and thorough consideration. China also urged a calming of the heated rhetoric on both sides, saying the issue was “complicated and sensitive”.

Along the bike lane, where families slept in tents, accepting food and coffee from strangers, people have organised to present a united front to authorities, who they pressed ceaselessly for information. They were told that water and food had been passed along to at least some of those trapped inside. On September 22 morning, after hours of inactivity blamed on rain, rescuers were readying to re-enter the site, joined by teams from Japan and Israel. Fernandez said officials told them they knew where people were trapped on the fourth floor. A roller coaster of emotions played out on September 22 for Roberta Villegas Miguel, who was awaiting word of her 37-year-old son, Paulino Estrada Villegas, an accountant who worked on the fourth floor and is married with two young daughters. Wrapped in a fuzzy turquoise blanket against the morning chill she said that her daughter-in-law was contacted by a friend who said she had received a call from a cell number that belonged to her son, but there was no conversation.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees visited Bangladesh on Saturday to measure the extent of the Rohingya refugee crisis. Almost 430,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar and crossed to Bangladesh since August 25. During his visit to the Cox’s Bazar district, where a majority of the Rohingyas fleeing Myanmar are staying, the UNHCR commissioner Filippo Grandi’s aim was to get a first-hand grasp of the scale of the refugee crisis, the UN said in a statement. The UN added that Grandi was set to “meet with refugees and see UNHCR’s continued ramping up of its response to support Bangladesh”, Efe news reported.

d Sheeran‘s ‘Shape Of You’ has surpassed Drake‘s ‘One Dance’ as Spotify’s most-streamed song ever. The 26-year-old artist – who released his third album ‘÷’ earlier this year – has managed to dethrone the Canadian rapper on the streaming platform when it comes to numbers, with the album’s lead single clearly in high demand among his listeners. ‘Shape Of You’, which was released on January 6 this year, has now clocked up
1,318,420,396 streams, according to newly-published figures. This huge number exceeds the total amount of streams of ‘One Dance’ (which came out on April 5, 2016), which currently has 1,317,143,742 plays. ‘One Dance’ had held the title of most-streamed Spotify song since last October, when it overtook Major Lazer‘s hit single ‘Lean On’. Sheeran has previously shattered two Spotify records, with ‘÷’ breaking first-day streaming records
for an album back in March. ‘Shape Of You’ also holds the record for the highest amount of one-day streams. Elsewhere, for mer Mercury Prize winner Benjamin Clementine has hit out at Sheeran’s nomination for this year’s prize – which was won by Sampha. Clementine won the prestigious award in 2015 for his acclaimed debut album ‘At Least For Now’ – beating the likes of Jamie xx, Florence + The Machine and Wolf Alice. (NME)

“N
ewton” Director Amit V Masurkar says he was completely unaware of the Iranian film “Secret Ballot” and that people should watch both the films and compare to find out if they are copied. “Newton” has been chosen as India’s official selection for Oscars 2018. A day after this news was announced, several reports came out claiming that the film has been inspired by a 2001 Iranian movie titled “Secret Ballot”, helmed by Babak Payami. It focuses on the life of a ballot officer who visits a barren and desolate place to plead with voters to cast their votes and take part in the elections. Asked if he was inspired by the Iranian film, Masurkar told IANS: “I wrote the story in 2013 and after that, for eight months I along with Mayank (Tiwari, the screenplay writer) worked on the script. ilmmaker Karan Johar said there was need to stop segregating cinema into regions and start projecting, promoting and platforming Indian cinema. He underlined the need for breaking the regional barriers and bringing all Indian films under one roof. “Bollywood is a term we have learnt to live with. It is disheartening that you have to keep using it in the world because that is our identity. We are not poor cousin of any industry. We are tall industry of our own and we have made some spectacular movies,” he said at the Indian School of Business Leadership Summit (ILS) here on Saturday. He described ‘Bahubaali’ as the first real crossover movie of India which crossed all corners of the country to the extent never seen in the past. Karan said it was an extraordinary movie and its maker Rajmouli, actors Prabhas, Rana, Tamanna and the entire crew who were not known before 2015 became future stars. The filmmaker, however, said the film was bigger than all stars. He believes the script and the budget of a movie were important than any superstar or megastar. Stating that the star system died in Hollywood 10 years ago, he said Bollywood was also heading
towards the same phenomenon. On his movie ‘My Name is Khan’ going beyond the NRI market to reach non-Indian audiences abroad, Karan said this was possible as the movie was about misinterpretation of a global religion which resonated deeply with many countries beyond the Indian diaspora market. He said perhaps there may not be another ‘My Name is Khan’ and there was also no need to go to other markets. “Let us strengthen our domestic industry before we look anywhere else,” he said. “Indian cinema is a beast of its own. It’s not like anything that you sell off the counter or any other product this country sells. We are part of this beast and victims of it, at times. If you don’t love that beast, don’t own that beast and don’t completely and passionately be absorbed by that, you should not try and sell it,” he said. (IANS)

India’s new-found spin-twins Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal

Australia have found it hard to solve the mystery around chinaman Kuldeep, who on Thursday became the first Indian spinner to score a hat-trick in 50 overs cricket. ing in as first change, India have got the perfect allround option in Pandya, who also has done his part with the ball. India’s only area of concern is the middle order batting, where Kedar Jadhav and Manish Pandey have failed to fire and the onus once again falls on the likes of Kohli, who blasted a 107-ball 92 in the second game at the Eden Gardens along side the other half centurion Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane’s opening partner Rohit Sharma is also due for runs but the saving grace has been the brilliant form of the lower middle order comprising stumper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Hardik Pandya. On the other hand, Australia will need to pull up their socks in the batting department, which lacked a spark in the first two matches. The over-dependence on Smith and opener David Warner has also been a cause of worry for the tourists. Australia can, however, draw a lot of positives from the performance of their fast bowlers -- Nathan Coulter-Nile and Pat Cummins. But the form of leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who has managed to pick just two wickets so far, will hurt the Aussies.
Zhang triumphs on home soil for second title
S H A NG H A I , S e p 2 3 (Agencies): China’s Zhang Shuai battled to her second career title with a gutsy three-set victory in the final of the Guangzhou Open on Saturday. The number two seed defeated unseeded Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in nearly two hours on the hard courts in southern China, to the delight of the home crowd. Zhang, the world number 30, held her arms aloft and dropped to her knees after sealing the title with an ace, recapturing the crown she won in 2013. The 24-year-old Krunic was contesting the first WTA final of her career and displayed her nerves in making 11 unforced errors in the first set to hand the initiative to Zhang. But Krunic found her groove in the second set and the more experienced Zhang, 28, began to falter. Krunic, ranked 65 in the world, reeled off three games without reply to level the match at one set each. She went into the decider with the momentum, but seemed to surrender that when she needed a medical time-out for a shoulder problem and there was also an enforced heat break. Zhang decisively swung the match back in her favour when she broke her opponent for the sixth time.

The 20-year-old French Open champion from Latvia beat Luksika KumKhum, who had earlier upset the number four seed Sorana Cirstea, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in 110 minutes. The 24-year-old Thai stunned the world
number 10 by winning the opening set 6-3 before Ostapenko won the following two sets to reach her third final of the 2017 season. Ostapenko is a favourite to win the title after her surprise upset win over third-seed Simona Halep at the French Open in June. Ostapenko will face Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, who sailed into the final after defeating Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands 6-1, 7-6 (9/7) in the semi-final on Saturday.

a ban on registering new players and with their first three league games of the season away from home as a new 68,000 capacity home was completed. Sevilla travelled to the Spanish capital unbeaten so far this season and came close early on when Pablo Sarabia’s shot was deflected onto his own post by Stefan Savic. At the other end Filipe Luis then smashed the underside of the bar from Yannick Carrasco’s cutback in Atletico’s best effort of a first-half short on clear-cut chances. H oweve r, i t t o o k less than a minute of the second-half to break the deadlock when Carrasco showed great awareness and pace to latch onto a
short back pass from Steven N’Zonzi to beat Sergio Rico to the ball, round the keeper and slot into an empty net. Griezmann then made the game safe 20 minutes from time as the French international won a tackle inside the Sevilla box before lifting himself off the floor to receive Luis’s pass and drill through Rico’s legs. Diego Simeone then quickly withdrew Griezmann and Carrasco to keep them fresh for Wednesday’s visit of Chelsea in the Champions League. But Atletico comfortably saw out the final stages to move to within a point of La Liga leaders Barcelona, who travel to Girona later on Saturday.

Man City, United stay on top with wins
Fabian Delph is cuddled by team-mates David Silva and Fernandinho after scoring a goal against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
L o nd o n , S e p 2 3 (Agencies): Manchester City and Manchester United both picked up their fifth Premier League wins of the season to stay top of the table, with Pep Guardiola’s men only ahead of their rivals on goal difference. Raheem Sterling scored twice inside eight minutes to hand Manchester City a 5-0 victory over rock-bottom Crystal Palace, who are still looking for their first points and goals of the season. City first found the back of the net on the stroke
of half-time through Leroy Sane, who lifted the ball over Scott Dann before finishing at the near post. And Sane was involved again as City doubled the lead shortly after the break at the Etihad Stadium, teeing up Sterling for a simple finish. Sterling then scored his second of the afternoon in the 59th minute, this time slotting home following Sergio Aguero’s ball into his path, before Aguero got in on the act himself notching a 79th-minute header from
Sane’s cross. There was still time for a fifth in the 89th minute, with Fabian Delph also getting his name on the score sheet. Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United saw off Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s, though the visitors had manager Jose Mourinho sent off late on. Lukaku broke the deadlock after 20 minutes, with the Belgium international slotting home the rebound after his initial effort was saved by Fraser Forster for
Mary Kom to represent AIBA at IOC athletes’ forum
M C Mary Kom
NEW DELHI, Sep 23 (PTI): Five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medallist M C Mary Kom has become the first Indian to be picked as the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) representative for the IOC Athletes’ Forum scheduled in November. The 33-year-old, who is also an active parliamentarian, has been invited to attend the 8th International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Athletes’ Forum in Lausanne from November
11 to 13. “This bi-annual forum brings together athlete representatives from across the Olympic Movement and provides an in-person community where athletes can exchange and discuss their viewpoint,” the AIBA wrote in its invitation letter to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) President Ajay Singh. “In this respect we would like to designate Ms Mary Kom to attend the forum as AIBA representative,” the letter stated.
The event, however, overlaps with the Asian Championship in Vietnam, which is scheduled from November 2 to 12. If Mary Kom is selected for the tournament after trials later this month, her participation at the IOC event would become uncertain. Among the most decorated athletes in Indian sports, Mary Kom is an Asian Games gold-medallist besides being a multiple-time Asian champion. She was conferred the AIBA Legends award at annual gala of the world body last year. The Manipuri, who competes in the light flyweight (48kg) and flyweight (51kg) divisions, was christened ‘Magnificent Mary’ by AIBA after her fourth world title back in 2008. She was also one of the eight brand ambassadors for the marquee event last year.
his sixth league goal of the season. United were unable to add to that tally in the second half and the game ended with Mourinho being sent to the stands for encroaching on the pitch. Chelsea remain three points back in third after beating Stoke 4-0, with Alvaro Morata scoring a hat trick to secure a third straight away win for the Blues. Chelsea opened the scoring inside just 90 seconds with Cesar Azpilicueta playing a ball over the top to Morata, who raced in on goal and slotted home. Pedro added a second on the half-hour mark, finding the bottom corner after latching onto a loose ball, before Morata bagged his second 12 minutes from time, scoring from a tight angle after beating two men. The Spain international then completed his hat trick eight minutes from the end, with Azpilicueta teeing him up once more and the striker picking out the back of the net. Ravi opened the scoring for STAFAC four minutes after the restart following a defensive error but two minutes later, Nizams were level with Thanring scoring low into the net after a free kick found him unmarked at the edge of the 18-yard box. Nizams though were guilty of having missed a penalty and an open goal and it cost them the match as Ravi headed in from a corner in the 69thminute to help STAFAC go top of the table with 4 points. Nizams remain on 3 points. In the early kick-off on Saturday, G-Sporting Club held defending champions Trinity Sporting to a 1-1 draw.
