NTC files PIL on parl secys, advisers

D I M A P U R , AU G 3 1 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has filed a PIL in the Gauhati High Court Kohima bench against the state of Nagaland for removal of “unconstitutional” posts of parliamentary secretaries and Advisors after the Governor of Nagaland P.B. Acharya failed to respond positively to the demand. NTC had issued a seven-day ultimatum on the Governor to remove the above posts in the light of the July 26,2017 landmark Supreme Court judgment in the PIL against appointment of parliamentary secretaries in Assam, ruled that states have no power to enact any law for appointment of parliamentary secretary and deemed “The Government of Assam had made the appointments through enactment of the Assam Parliamentary Secretaries (Appointment, Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004” as unconstitutional. According to NTC media cell, the PIL which was filed against appointment of “nine unconstitutional advisors and 26 parliamentary secretaries”, was heard on August 31, 2017.

The court posted the matter to September 11, 2017 for further order and hearing, NTC said. Earlier on August 18, NTC in a representation submitted to the Nagaland Governor through the chief secretary, urged upon the Governor to examine the matter and initiate appropriate action in terms of the Supreme Court Judgment dated July 26, 2017 within seven days from the date of receipt of representation. NTC reminded that as per the 91st Constitutional Amendment and Article 164 (1A) of the constitution of India, there should be only 12 ministers in the State of Nagaland, including the chief minister. However, NTC said that the chief minister, vide notification dated 26.07.17, unconstitutionally appointed nine advisors and 26 parliamentary secretaries under Rule 5 of the Rule of Executive Business (REB) for the Government of Nagaland. Pointing out that the appointments were made in clear contravention of the 91st amendment and also Article 164 (1A), NTC said that Rule 5 of REB “does not prescribe for appointment of

D I M A P U R , AU G 3 1 (NPN): Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) on Thursday served an ultimatum on the Department of School Education (DoSE) to implement state government notification dated January 9, 2009 in the recruitment of mathematics and science graduate teacher (GT) under school education on or before September 7, 2017. In a press release, ENSF president, Sepili L Sangtam, and general secretary, Imti Choba Chang, said that the decision to serve ultimatum was unanimously taken at the presidential meeting held August 30, 2017 and urged the responsible authority to fulfill the demand of the federation within stipulated time. Failure to fulfil its demand, the federation cautioned that it would “strive to seek for justice through

advisors and parliamentary secretaries, but was for allocation of portfolios to the ministers by the Governor on the advice of the chief minister.” NTC maintained that the July 26, 2017 Supreme Court order was a blanket judgment in the matter of appointment of unconstitutional parliamentary secretaries in the States of India wherever it exists. Since the Supreme Court had declared Assam Parliamentary Secretaries (Appointment, Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions), Act 2004 as unconstitutional, NTC said the appointment of unconstitutional advisors and unconstitutional parliamentary secretaries in Nagaland was deemed to be interfered with by the Governor for cancelling/rescinding the Notification NO. CAB-1/2013 dated July 26, 2017. NTC also acknowledged the “moral stand” taken by nine Mizoram parliamentary secretaries who resigned from the posts on August 30, 2017. NTC said the Mizo MLAs had quit in order to restore their status as representative of their respective constituencies. NTC also highlighted the

any means of agitation.” Meanwhile, the federation has expressed resentment over the “manipulation and non-adherence” to the notification dated January 9, 2009, saying it has directly deprived the Eastern Nagas in availing their “guaranteed rights.” It stated that “any modalities for recruitment should be in adherence to the said notification so as to avoid any anomalies and irregularities in the process since the notification stills stays valid.” Further, ENSF expressed dismay at the responsible authority’s failure to deliver what it called “the fundamental rights and justice to the Eastern Nagas.” The federation has also sought to know from the department as to what modality was applied for the recruitment of Advertisement No. NL/SE-1/2017 dated August 28, 2017.

recent order of the Sikkim High Court that declared the post of parliamentary secretaries as unconstitutional. In the case of Meghalaya, NTC said that the Meghalaya High Court may also declare the parliamentary secretary post as unconstitutional. Therefore, NTC was hopeful that parliamentary democracy would be restored and illegal offices would be removed to relief the people from this extraneous action of the state.

On PIL over backdoor appts in Police deptt Taking note of the PIL filed in the Gauahti High Court, Kohima Bench in connection with “backdoor appointments of 239 nonindigenous/non-locals to various Grade IV posts” in the Police department, NTC said it was hopeful that the court would examine the matter in the larger interest of public in the perspective of the existing notification dated 19.09.1987 and notification No. AR-8/8/76 dated 28th April, 1977. As per records available, NTC stated that “those backdoor appointments were made from 2013 to 2016 and

NSCN (R) bans sale of illegal drugs, alcohol D I M A P U R , AU G 3 1 (NPN): NSCN/GPRN (Reformation) has banned all illegal drugs and alcohol (selling/transporting) throughout the state with immediate effect. NSCN (R) MIP informed that the “Naga Army/militar y” would strictly monitor and impose the ban. It would also “supervise and check round the clock”, MIP said, while warning defaulters of strict action. In this regard, NSCN(R) appealed to the public “to cooperate with the military assignees, for smooth and effective functioning of the business establishment as well as to create a healthy environment among the Naga society and people.” NSCN (R) said such kind of practices would bring doom and ruin the Naga society.

the backdoor appointees were from Kerala, Maharashtra, UP, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Nepal.” Expressing utter shock and dismay, NTC alleged that the appointments were made in blatant violation of the existing government notification NO. APPT-18 /6/67 dated 19.09.1987 and the criteria laid down in the notification No. AR-8/8/76 dated 28th April, 1977. It further cited the notification-- “The undersigned is directed to invite a reference to this department order of even number dated 6-7-73 in which 100% of all non-technical Class III & IV and 80% of all other posts have been reserved for recruitment of persons who are indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland and to once again impress upon all concerned that the above decision of the Government should be strictly followed while making recruitment to various posts.” NTC lauded the petitioners for taking a bold step to preserve and uphold the legitimate and constitutional rights of Nagas, saying “it is high time that we the indigenous Naga inhabitants of Nagaland should rise and restore our rights.”

CM hard sells Nagaland as investment destination EPO sets deadline for state govt to develop road

D I M A P U R , AU G 3 1 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang on Thursday held an interactive session with members of US India Business Council (USIBC) in Delhi on training and skill up-gradation of youths in Nagaland for entrepreneurship development, self-employment and industrial promotion. According to a statement from the CMO, Ze-

liang had explained to the USIBC on the investment opportunities available in Nagaland, particularly in sectors such as Agriculture and allied departments, exploration of oil, minerals, mines, infrastructures, tourism, health care etc. The USIBC expressed keen interest in partnering with Nagaland government on skill development, entrepreneurship and industrial

Nationwide programme to test all TB patients Deadline for Aadhaar-PAN NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (AGENCIES): Beginning this month, health authorities will commence a nationwide programme to test every Tuberculosis (TB) patient for signs of resistance to first-line drugs. Other than providing a realistic assessment on the scale of resistance to commonly-available tuberculosis drugs, experts said this could also reveal a large number of hidden tuberculosis patients, as well greater numbers of those with multiple infections of TB and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Even as India tops the world in the number of tuberculosis cases, the WHO (World Health Organisation) estimates that possibly as many as a million Indians with TB could be outside government scrutiny. In 2015 alone, nine million Indians were tested for suspected tuberculosis and about 900,000 were con-

firmed to be ailing from it. Nearly 3% of new TB cases and 18% of prevalent cases are believed to be drug resistant, though independent analyses peg these numbers as much higher. The new policy, called the Universal Drug Sensitivity Test, which was formalised earlier this month, will be implemented using a molecular diagnostic test called GeneXpert, a US-developed technology tool being used worldwide since 2010. It can detect the TB bacterium as well check for resistance to rifampicin, one of the standard key TB drugs, within 90 minutes. Conventional tests take at least a day or more and require well-trained personnel for similar results. States that will first see this policy being implemented include Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand.

These, however, are not the States with the highest tuberculosis burden. “The States are expected to implement this intervention for patients diagnosed as on 1st August or later,” says a letter signed by Sunil Khaparde, who heads India’s National TB Control Programme. The WHO’s TB statistics for India for 2015 — the latest available — gives an estimated incidence figure of 2.2 million cases of TB for India out of a global incidence of 9.6 million. An inability to rapidly diagnose multi-drug resistant tuberculosis has long been identified as among the chinks in India’s strategy to eliminate tuberculosis. There are only around 600 GeneXpert devices now in use — roughly one for each district — and this posed a stumbling block to deploying the WHOrecommended kits earlier. “We now have enough of

Speculations are on about the new faces. NDA partners are likely to get some important portfolios. Deputy Speaker Thambidurai and Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan are likely to be inducted into the cabinet from AIADMK. RCP Singh of JDU is likely to get a cabinet berth while Santosh Paswan may get MoS rank. There is still no clarity on whether NCP will join the NDA and become a part of the government. Sources said the Cabinet expansion and reshuffle is likely to happen on September 2 in the evening. Modi leaves for a visit to China and Myanmar at noon on September 3.

them to implement this in a big way, as well the [necessary] funds,” Mr. Khaparde told The Hindu. He did not specify numbers. GeneXpert kits, though one of their kind, are also known to be expensive, as well as requiring air-conditioned settings and reliable electricity access for optimal output. The Indian Council of Medical Research is in the process of testing a cheaper alternative to GeneXpert called Truenat MTB, which is reportedly more portable, battery-operated, and performs as well at lower costs. “The TB burden is dramatically under-reported and, ideally, we should be moving to a system of molecular diagnostics for all TB suspects,” said Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Director General, ICMR. “This is a significant move…we will likely find more cases and have to be prepared to treat more of them.”

linkage extended till Dec 31 NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (PTI): Centre on Thursday extended by four months the deadline for linking PAN with biometric identifier Aadhaar till December 31, a source said. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar for taxpayers was to end on August 31. This comes at a time when the government has granted a similar extension for furnishing of Aadhaar for availing the benefits of various social welfare schemes. Also, the Supreme Court is hearing petitions challenging the government’s decision on Aadhaar and has posted the matter for next hearing in November. And so, the extension was in line, the source said. Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must

intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities. However, those categorised as non-resident Indians as per the Income Tax laws, people who are not citizens of India, those above 80 years of age and residents of the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir had been exempt from the requirement. The source further said that people who do not have Aadhaar can file their IT returns, but their returns will not be processed till they submit their Aadhaar number. The tax department had on July 31 stated that “unless a finding is made that Aadhaar is constitutionally not valid, tax return filers will need to link their PAN with Aadhaar by August 31, 2017.” Incidentally, December 31 is also the deadline for people to link their bank accounts with Aadhaar.

DIMAPUR, AUG 31 (NPN): Emuloto Public Organisation (EPO) has set a 15-day deadline for the state government to initiate the process of developing CoCo-Doyang road from Khubokita to Khitsakita (18km) via Atoizu ADC HQ under Zunheboto district, which remained unattended for more than a decade. In a representation addressed to the chief secretary, EPO chairman, Abeto Sumi, and secretary, Vikato I Chishi, cautioned that in the event the responsible department/government failed to act within the given time, EPO would resort to its own course of action deemed fit until such time the demand was fulfilled. EPO pointed out that the road was in a pitiable condition and the citizens were facing untold miseries and hardships The organisation also pointed out that the public have been maintaining the said road at their won expenses from time to time. However, it said that due to the lack of machinery tool and modern equipments, the repaired roads cannot sustain for long. Further, EPO said that the public would not, however, be in a position to maintain the said road time and again. “The general consensus is that the government should provide commendable service in respect for the demand made by the public,” EPO said. Over the years, it said the condition of the road has rapidly deteriorated due to complete negligence and lack of proper strategies to tackle the problem by the responsible department. Emuloto Public Organisation opined that the problem in the construction and maintenance of the said road were not insurmountable. K Y M C

Political crisis a replica of 2015: Dr. Shürho

Correspondent

KOHIMA, AUG 31 (NPN): NPF president and MLA, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu described the current NPF crisis as a replica of the 2015 crisis when majority of the NPF MLAs camped at Sovima had revolted against the NPF for116 days. Dr. Shurho said this while speaking at the general conference of NPF Kohima division at state academy hall on Thursday. Dr. Shurho said that even though the dissidents had elected their own president and office bearers, he urged the party not to be misled with whatever statements they were giving to confuse the people. He reminded the party workers that though the party has minority MLAs yet the legislators belonged to the party and that NPF party was deeply rooted with the Naga people. He said the party was formed with Naga cause in mind by the founding members and the party cannot be handed over to the people who only believed in “might and power could control the

Referring to the dismissal of erstwhile NPF government, he said that it was all pre-planned by Governor P.B Acharya, Neiphiu Rio, T. R Zeliang and some central BJP leaders knowing that Nagaland being the stronghold of regional NPF party, BJP had no scope in the state. In this light, T.R’s government was installed unconstitutionally so as to pave way for a BJP government in future.

Regarding the on-going court cases, Dr. Liezietsu said, the rebel MLAs would try to confuse the people and lure party workers, however he added, any party worker who left for the dissident group would automatically detach themselves from the NPF. DAN chairman and leader NPF legislator party, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu in his speech urged the party rank and files to stand by the truth even if it meant

Zeliang with all their seniority and experience still wanted to cling on to NPF even though they were free to join any party. Former speaker Thenucho Tunyi in his address congratulated the NPF Kohima division for the overwhelming victory in the recently held by-elections amidst powerful forces and insurmountable odds. Tunyi also acknowledged Dr. Liezietsu for exhibiting his magnanimity by making Neiphiu Rio and T.R. Event, 2017’ in Imphal’s Kwakeithel, Singh said that the state government has already earmarked a budget of Rs 35 crore in the state budget under the “Startup India” initiative to encourage local entrepreneurs. The chief minister urged the unemployed youths of the state to become job creators instead of becoming job seekers. “We don’t have to think only from commercial or profit oriented view. We also have to work towards welfare and prosperity of the state,” he said. The government would

introduce policies and programmes to encourage the entrepreneurs of the state, he assured. Ahluwalia rules out separate state Agartala, Aug 31 (PTI): Union minister S S Ahluwalia Thursday ruled out the possibility of forming separate states in West Bengal’s Darjeeling hills and in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. “In case of forming a new state by carving out any territory, the respective state would have to send an official proposal and have to furnish logic behind forming new state,” he said. Neither West Bengal nor Tripura governments had so far sent any such proposal, he said. “So, the question of forming new states in West Bengal and Tripura does not arise,” the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Agriculture told reporters here. Ahluwalia stressed on talks to solve the problems in Darjeeling.

S S Ahluwalia

“I, as an MP from Dar jeeling, would say that all problems could be solved through negotiation. If problems could be solved through bi-partite talks it is good and if that fails, then we have to opt for tri-partite talks,” he said. He said the Centre was interested in empowering the tribal councils or hill councils and in that case also specific proposals would have to be proposed to the Centre on the basis of which action plans could be chalked out.

4 militants arrested in Manipur Imphal, Aug 31 (PTI): Security forces arrested five persons including four militants from various parts of the state, police said Thursday. Two militants belonging to the proscribed outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and a former militant were apprehended yesterday from Imphal valley, said police. A double barrel gun, demand notes and stolen vehicles were seized from the two arrested

UNLF militants. A cadre of Kangleipak Communist Party was apprehended from Loushangkhong locality of Imphal East by a combined team of police commandos and Assam Rifles. A militant of the banned Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL) was arrested by the state police commandos from the IndoMyanmar border town of Moreh, police informed.

The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has demanded formation of a separate state by carving out the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which forms two third of the state territory. “This demand is not practical. Tripura is a small state and there is no question of forming a separate state. Likewise, there is no possibility of forming any state in Darjeeling of West Bengal,” he said. However, he said, if there is specific proposal from the states for development of those areas, the Centre would respond to it. “Ultimately, development is required. If people’s problems could be solved through proper developments, these demands would wither away,” he added.

According to Railways, the GFITT aims not only to train Konkan Railways’ own manpower for its tunnelling projects but also wishes to generate qualified and trained personnel for the benefit of other government organisations, private sector and even foreign organisations to bridge the huge gap in levels of knowledge and qualified manpower required to meet the key segment of infrastructure development in India.

opinion/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 267 Dimapur, Friday, September 1, 2017

P

Public fleeced

ublic of Nagaland have unequivocally given their thumbs-up to the anti-corruption plank placed before them by ACAUT Nagaland at the second huge public rally in Dimapur on August 25. Corruption may be lightly termed as ‘illegal method’ to obtain some profit or gain. The level of corruption in the government is nothing short of looting. Even in the public domain the same kind of illegal method is widely observed in the way extortion by all and sundry as well as a mafia-like grip exerted on business through a system called ‘Syndicate system’ which ACAUT had boldly highlighted and which culminated in a very wide public support and approval at the first rally on October 31,2013. The illegal method in public has been recognized as a factor that is driving market prices high. The factor comes from forcible collections and illegal taxes and syndicates operating with virtual impunity in Dimapur. Traders pass on the ‘negative benefits’ to the helpless customers or if prices are to be maintained, it then calls for drastic reduction in quality. Cost of construction in Nagaland has also shot up sky high due to abnormal increases in sand and cements which have turned variables. Rate of sand per truck /per trip that used to cost Rs.3500 during 70s had shot up to Rs.7000 by 80s. This then shot up to Rs.12000 then Rs.15000 by 90s and then Rs.21000 sometime during 2010, today has sky rocketed to nearly Rs.28,000 to 30,000 per truck . Construction work in Dimapur and other parts of Nagaland is hectic and adding costs on building items means that many people would not be able to build homes in their lifetime. In nearby Assam, the same quantity of sand is sold for around Rs.10,000. Those levying abnormally high tax on sand in nearby Karbi Anglong do know too well that people in Nagaland are totally dependent on sand from their state and so have exploited the situation. After all the unjustified, unreasonable and illegal taxes have been imposed at the other side, truckers have again to pay multiple taxes to various groups at the inter-state check gates. In order to meet with the demands for gravel sand that is coarser and desirable for concrete foundations and in order to make bigger profits, highest quality sand is mixed in a 60:40 or sometimes 50:50 ratio with inferior quality sand. Added to the woes of contractors and builders, bricks manufactured in Dimapur are smaller in dimension and deformed. The abnormally high cost for construction of houses as per rates in Nagaland is unfair. The lowly income are condemned not to enjoy the benefits and this is wrong. Such a situation bodes ill for economic progress of the state. Prices should be rational and determined on the basis of percentage and not lump sum slab. This is an important issue that requires public to also be aware and also play their role in rejecting any unreasonable increases. It is time that the state authorities, DMC, DCCI and public organizations ponder over constituting a committee to study the issue of prices and how to correct the drift.

DailyDevotion “My Joy…Your Joy” These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. —John 15:11 What was the joy that Jesus had? Joy should not be confused with happiness. In fact, it is an insult to Jesus Christ to use the wordhappiness in connection with Him. The joy of Jesus was His absolute self-surrender and self-sacrifice to His Father— the joy of doing that which the Father sent Him to do— “…who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…” (Hebrews 12:2). “I delight to do Your will, O my God…” (Psalm 40:8). Jesus prayed that our joy might continue fulfilling itself until it becomes the same joy as His. Have I allowed Jesus Christ to introduce His joy to me? Living a full and overflowing life does not rest in bodily health, in circumstances, nor even in seeing God’s work succeed, but in the perfect understanding of God, and in the same fellowship and oneness with Him that Jesus Himself enjoyed. But the first thing that will hinder this joy is the subtle irritability caused by giving too much thought to our circumstances. Jesus said, “…the cares of this world,… choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful” (Mark 4:19). And before we even realize what has happened, we are caught up in our cares. All that God has done for us is merely the threshold— He wants us to come to the place where we will be His witnesses and proclaim who Jesus is. Have the right relationship with God, finding your joy there, and out of you “will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). Be a fountain through which Jesus can pour His “living water.” Stop being hypocritical and proud, aware only of yourself, and live “your life…hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). A person who has the right relationship with God lives a life as natural as breathing wherever he goes. The lives that have been the greatest blessing to you are the lives of those people who themselves were unaware of having been a blessing.

An urgent need of a political theology in Naga context

T

he term “political theology” may seem strange to some people. To these individuals, let me say: Political theology is about interpreting the socio-political world through the lens of theology. That is, it seeks to utilize theological ways of thinking to politics, society, and economic so as to address social injustices and political oppression. And, perhaps, we can say that it has its goal in the Lord’s Prayer, “May Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” As a branch of study, political theology was first developed and popularized by Catholic scholars in Europe very early on. But as the Church began to focus more and more on herself, we see a decline of her influence in the public realm, which resulted, as it were, in the disappearance of God from the public square. Or putting it another way, political theology “died” in Europe possibly sometime in the sixteenth-century. By midtwentieth century, many countries were embracing human rationalism and secularism as a way to solve all conceivable sociopolitical problems: Kemal Atatȕrk introduced the

W

concept of a secular government in Turkey. Similarly, Jawaharlal Nehru took the route of instituting secular government in India. Even America, which was founded on Christian principles, was increasingly embracing secular liberalism. By 1960, with Evangelical Christians in full retreat, John F. Kennedy assured the electorate that his Catholic faith would not affect his politics, as if one’s faith shouldn’t be part of politics. Thus, taking God out from politics was soon becoming the popular thing to do. No wonder a 1996 cover of Time magazine could ask, “Is God Dead?” as people increasingly witnessed the triumph of atheism and secular liberalism. Interestingly, things about politics do change very often. Today, atheism is in retreat in some of the more prominent Communist countries: In China, the Christian faith and democratic ideals are growing and spreading; in Russia, President Vladimir Putin is introducing himself as a Christian by conspicuously wearing his baptismal cross and publicly maintaining a small chapel next to his office

in Kremlin. In England, Tony Blair was very open about his Christian faith while in office. Similarly, George W. Bush was very vocal about his faith in Christ; as President, he expected that each Cabinet meeting opened with prayer. In sharp contrast, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama as Liberal Democrats f o l l o w e d Mazhie the path of the Hollywood culture. But now, things are very different with Donald Trump again: he has become a Godless-turnedConser vative who has chosen to identify with the Evangelicals in defense of Christian values. Indeed, today’s America is witnessing a return of the Evangelicals to the public square. In all this, what is most interesting is that it is not the Christian religion per se that is back; rather, it is the committed faith of ’Christians in politics. In a sense the current resurgence of interest in political theology can be attributed in part to the failure of secular liberalism and in part to the growth of militant Islamic faith all over the world. For Osama bin Laden, it was

because of Western imperialism and secular liberalism, which he believed had brought disgrace to Islam, that he reacted against and caused him to start a radical political movement. And precisely based on this assumption, today we have the whole Islamist terrorists operating with the goal of establishing a pure IslamNakhro ic state. In other words, Muslim countries are increasingly rejecting secular liberalism and calling for a new political theology that could be more suited to their Islamic contexts. Buddhist-majority countries have generally resisted secular liberalism and modernity on many fronts for the last several decades. In Sri Lanka, Buddhist monks have continued to lock in ongoing conflict with Hindu Tamils, because they wanted to control political power. Similarly, the Buddhist monks of Myanmar have always played a critical role in determining the political affairs of their country. In the case of India, the so-called Nehru’s secular government is falling apart. Now we are seeing a resurgence of the Hindutva

movement in the form of the RSS-backed BJP government. As a result, many Indian Muslim communities are now feeling more threatened. For that matter, even Christian communities are no exception. The Modi government, for example, has already renamed our Christmas and Good Friday holidays as Good Governance Day and Digital India Day respectively. In addition, it is making every effort to introduce yoga in all public schools and to ban the slaughtering of beef for consumption. As for the Nagas of Heraka sect, they are being assimilated into Hinduism. Now where do the Naga Christians stand in light of all these various political theologies resurging for control and supremacy? Don’t we realize that both Hinduism as a political movement and the growth of Muslim population in Nagaland are posing a mortal threat to our Christian Naga identity? If we are truly concerned about our future as a people of God, do we have a kind of vision that can match the vision of Islam or withstand the Hindutva political agenda? If not,

Post-mortem An imperative need to reform, perform and transform our society

hen Shri. Narendra Modi said his government mantra is to reform, perform and transform I was really impressed with his mantra slogan. Indeed, this kind of mantra is really meant and suitable for our current stagnated Naga society and the government should also focus on reforming, performing and transforming our society. I’m referring exclusively to our current trend of shaky society despite so many shortcomings existing in politico-economicreligious-cultural mess up in Nagas way of life. When all the chain of corruption is checked, everything is possible to change from sick society to a transparent and prosperous society. The recent exposure by ACAUT relating to fund mismanagement in terms of crores of rupees by the concerned department is really heart breaking moment that every right thinking Nagas denizen must voice out and lend out unflinching support in order to make our state into ‘corrupt free state’. We must work cohesively by supporting such organisation like ACAUT who are trying to change our suffering society into vibrant state. In short, ACAUT is a Messiah to us to fight against corruptions. Famous words coined by Ja A. Jahannes says “Unless we learn to know ourselves, we run the danger of destroying ourselves.” We always blame the society but we are the society who is blaming ourselves. Concomitantly, we blame the Government being corrupt but it is us blaming ourselves because we ourselves had created the VIP culture and the middle men culture in our society leaving ourselves entailing in utter state of dooming society. The term ‘democracy’ is equally important to us to know and Abraham Lincoln said-Democracy means “The government of the people, by the people and for the people”. Since our government is a system of democratic set up we have every right to protest democratically for the good of our society. Current corruption in our society is not all of a sudden but this poisonous corruption had root cause from before and has been

succeeding by our successors from our predecessors and the venom is inflicting everywhere. In this frantic state of affairs the general public shall be compel to nurture and nourish already dying state and ACAUT is spearheading the movement to eradicate corruptions. Hence before it’s too late the government should stitch carefully the torn part of our state. As the saying goes- ‘A stitch in time saves nine’. The policies and programs by the government and equally the role played by the government are very important in transforming the state into prosperous society. But one thing for pretty sure that we cannot always depend and blame on government only but it is our bound duty and every naga intellects must participate in a positive way by reforming, performing and transforming our society. For instant there are so many places in the world that developed from backward state into vibrant city- states without government sanction and support. Humans have desires, wants and greed to achieve something in one’s lifetime otherwise without this principle he/she could be a miser who chooses to remain idle without visions, dreams, versions, goals and aims in one’s lifetime on earth. Now the point is who wouldn’t want to be a powerful and respected person in the society. Of course everybody wanted to be but it has certain limitation in our life. This is the reason why Alexander the Great on his deathbed as a last wish had said that after his death he want his hands to be let loose, hanging outside the coffin for all to see. It means after his death he want his hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted. Concomitantly, when we die, we too will go empty handed leaving out all the precious jewels, diamonds, gold, silvers and crores of rupees leaving everything on earth as we cannot take anything beyond death. Therefore the principle of resisting obsessions which is unethical and threat to

our existence should mend and check instantly by reinventing our mindset towards transformation and vitally embarking upon new avenues for a better manifestation of our society. Our current political, social, economic and educational system is at the worst and stood at too lowliness. Politically, we have been witnessing political turmoil in our state with bloodless coup d’ e‘dat for a three consecutive chief ministerial post in one term from the ruling NPF party. For the first time we have two NPF president both sides claiming to be real and legitimate ruler. Now the law and the constitution of the party will decide accordingly as we all believe in the law and the constitution. Again, the ugliest chapter of election are vote rigging, vote bank politics, proxy voting, rampant prevalent of proxy voters name, booth capturing politics are some practices prevailing in our land. Socially, the government policy of reservation for backward tribes in government job is for the sake of giving equal opportunity and representation to the deprived section in our society in governmental affairs. I’m not against any tribal’s or such reservations but one day this may lead them to ‘spoon feeding culture’ unable to compete with the rest of the world. Let us set a motto that we as a naga family by blood “everyone is equal before God and everyone can do and perform well”. Instead of using the words ‘backward tribes’ better use the word ‘economically weaker section’ because the word backward is too harsh and alien for us and it’s clearly a sign of dividing the society. Our society is clearly divided on tribal’s line and area wise such as eastern nagas, tenyiemia family and the recently formed CNTC comprised of Ao, Sumi and Lotha. Economically, our state’s coffer is empty and the state’s exchequer is running fully in deficits for some years. Being a dependent economy state and with less economic activities and siphoning of money meant for public, the culture of executing the work seasonally especially renovation of black topping of roads

during hornbill festival time only is not appreciable. Like other metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Delhi etc. even a tiny potholes or craters were used to renovate overnight in order to avoid facing trouble by the commuters or traffic congestion. Our economy is also looting away because we don’t encourage working with dignity of labour and lack of naga entrepreneurs in our own land is a vivid consequences of our economy/wealth been draining away. Educationally, the government school is giving poor percentage of result annually despite hugely spending on salary by the government. The education system needs urgent revamp in order to produce excellent performance in the future. Our land is moving towards dooming state of affairs whereby nepotism and high handedness is clearly prevalent with everything manipulated by the elite section of the people. The high level contractors, technocrats, bureaucrats and the powerful ministers constitute the first class citizens and they are the one to take first privilege in every angle. If the trend continues like this in our land then there can be a great possibility of starting a popular proletariat movement to stand for the poor, exploits, unreached and underprivileged. Our society is vividly dividing in the line of rich versus poor; rich are becoming richer and poor becoming poorer. This is the outcome of unequal participation in state affairs unable to repent the old system and firmly manipulated by the stronger elite section in Naga society. It is an imperative need of our naga brothers and sisters to come out from the comfort zone/ backstage and stand truthfully in front of sick society and voice out for changes as an embodiment of our life by reforming the outdated system, method and concept and explore out for new system which is compatible and adaptable to Nagas. At the same time we must perform harder to where and what we have reformed for in order to transform our society into vibrant society. Yarangchang Imchen, Lirmen village.

we may see our identity buried in a not too distant future. Or, even if we Nagas don’t embrace Hinduism or Islam as such, are we still going to be doing our politics without God? Can a non-theological secularism alone be relied upon to serve as our society’s foundation or as a supporting pillar for our Naga house? As a believer in the existence of an invisible reality, I am of the view that there is a real spiritual warfare going on behind all these outwardly visible political battles. And if we are to go by what the Scriptures say, all the world politics are ultimately driven by some spiritual forces from behind. As such, it is imperative that we Naga Christians have a good idea of what our political theology should be so that we can withstand any enemy’s onslaught, whether visible or invisible. With all these in mind, we will seek to address various politicotheological issues which may be relevant to our current Naga situation. So, please stay tuned to gain knowledge through our weekly articles to be published in the next few months.

Ready to be disciplined?

L

ife as we know is supposed to be filled with good things yet life as we see seems to be just the opposite, full of strife. Who is to be blamed? This is the question we all seem to be constantly asking. Talk of politics, it is the politicians we blame; talk of religion, it is the church leaders we blame; talk of education, it is the teachers we blame, talk of home it is the parents we blame. One wonders if this blame game is unique to this generation? I would think not, each generation thinks they are doing something novel in blaming the older generation for all the ills in the current society. Rightly, to some extent it may be true, but I believe the main culprit is the lack of discipline in our society; it seems to have becomes such a foreign word to us that today’s generation find it hard to live a disciplined life. Talks, rallies, and slogans do help one to be aware and think for the betterment of our society; attending and participating shows our support and encourages those who are working tirelessly on our behalf, but is that enough? Can we be disciplined enough to carry out in action all those talks in our own lives? Or are we just satisfied with attending the rally, and let that be the end of it? Discipline is not something that comes from our genes, it should be practiced and cultivated in our daily lives everyday everywhere. It may seem a struggle sometimes, but the price of not being disciplined in our principles as an individual and as a society is what we are paying today, with all the corruption and ills of society around us. I believe only once we discipline ourselves, we can bring positive change in our own lives and in our society. Are we ready to be disciplined? Ruthla Aier, Chumukedima

in April this year after the prime minister announced the “Start-up India, Standup India” programme, which includes incentives like tax holiday in the early phase and an exit period of three months. The minister said the Northeast Venture Fund is attracting young start-ups in more and more numbers and has generated huge enthusiasm among entrepreneurs looking for an opportunity in the Northeast. He said the NorthEast Venture Fund has been set up by the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi), which already has the mandate to encourage entrepreneurship in the region primarily by offering support to the first- generation entrepreneurs.

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Thursday said the fallout of demonetisation was on predicted lines and the economy will benefit in medium and long term. A day after the Reserve Bank said that almost all of the demonetised currency came back into the system, Jaitley said the fact that money got deposited in banks does not mean that all of it is legitimate money. “It’s nobody’s case that black money has been completely eliminated after demonetisation,” he said. He said demonetisation, coupled with GST, will give a “significant boost” to direct tax revenues as many people have come under the tax net. Although an

dued loan growth, will ease pressure on capitalisation,” the report said. It said the government support will remain strong for public sector banks, despite a reluctance to bolster bank capital. The government has maintained support to public sector banks through a range of policies, since failure for any of these banks could pose risks to systemic confidence. The rating agency said profitability of the banks remains low, but is improving. Lending margins will be stable because a drop in funding costs following demonetisation will likely offset pressure from re-pricing of loans to the marginal cost of lending rate (MCLR).

NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (PTI): The Centre is considering over 60 proposals for start-ups in the Northeast, and will provide initial funds for such initiatives under a new scheme. Minister for Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh said the Northeast Venture Fund was the first dedicated venture capital fund for the region and that his ministry would offer an additional benefit of providing the initial funds to any youngster planning to set up an enterprise. He said hundreds of queries were pouring in each day with the DoNER Ministry and over 60 proposals were already in the pipeline for consideration, an official statement said. Singh said the initiative to set up the fund began

(NPL) formation and problem loan ratios, suggest a bottoming of the credit cycle, he said. However, deteriorating asset quality in agriculture, and micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) portfolios pose risks. The report said the ongoing progress in managing legacy asset issues is offsetting the significant capital shortfalls some banks continue to face. The common equity tier 1 (CET1) ratios of public sector banks remain far below those of their private sector peers. The gap is likely to persist due to the government’s reluctance to infuse more capital into private sector banks. “However, the system’s overall loan loss coverage will likely further improve, which, coupled with sub-

engagement through a dedicated website in medium risk cases and close monitoring in low risk cases. “The exercise has also unearthed large number of persons and clusters having suspect transactions. These include about 14,000 properties of more than Rs 1 crore each where persons have not even filed Income Tax Returns. “The investigations are in progress,” the statement said. The high, medium and low risk cases have been identified through the use of advanced data analytics, including integration of data sources, relationship clustering and fund tracking. After note ban, there has been 158 per cent increase in number of searches (from 447 to 1,152 groups) and more than doubling of seizures to Rs 1,469 crore from Rs 712 crore. There also has been 38 per cent increase in admission of undisclosed income (from Rs 11,226 crore to Rs 15,496 crore), it said.

Mumbai, Aug 31 (PTI): Global rating agency Moody’s Thursday gave a stable outlook to the country’s banking system due to the ongoing progress on asset quality front and on better operating environment. The rating agency said the outlook for the system is also in line with the stable outlooks for 10 of the 15 banks it rates. The 15 banks rated by Moody’s in the country together account for about 70 per cent of assets in the system. “The outlook for the banking system reflects a stable operating environment and improved prospects for asset quality, among other factors,” Moody’s vice president and senior credit officer, Srikanth Vadlamani, said in a report. In the first phase of Operation Clean Money exercise, data analytics was used to identify 18 lakh suspect cases where cash transactions did not appear to be in line with the tax profile of depositors, ITD said. Online verification was done in a record time of four weeks, it said. Using data analytics, 13.33 lakh accounts of some 9.72 lakh persons with unusual cash deposits of around Rs 2.89 lakh crore was identified and response sought. The resource was captured “within a short span of 3-4 weeks,” the statement said, without saying how many of them were genuine deposits and how many were unaccounted money. It also did not give details of tax collected on unaccounted money. The Operation Clean money has since moved into the next phase that “includes enforcement actions in high risk cases, taxpayer

overwhelming amount of money was deposited in banks it is not a concern for the government as it is good for the economy that more money has come into the formal system. “The fallout of demonetisation is on predicted lines ... the fact that money got deposited in banks doesn’t make it legitimate money,” he said, adding the country was ready for demonetisation even though there was political resistance. The RBI yesterday said about 99 per cent of Rs 15.44 lakh crore demonetised currency came back into the system. On the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Jaitley said its inflationary impact has been avoided and there is a scope of convergence of tax rates going forward. The minister also said that consolidation of PSU banks is on cards as the country needs “fewer but stronger banks”. On bad loans, he said that resolution will take time. “You can’t have a surgical solution to it”, he said, adding that if private sector cannot pay back its debts then someone else should be allowed to take over.

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI): The Income Tax Department (ITD) Thursday said that about 14,000 properties worth over Rs 1 crore each are under its scrutiny as their owners have not filed income returns. In a statement detailing the impact of demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on black money, it said ‘Operation Clean Money’ was launched on January 31 to analyse data of persons who deposited large sums of cash post note- ban, with no previous matching returns of income. While Rs 15,496 crore was admitted as undisclosed income, surveys resulted in seizure of Rs 13,920 crore. The ITD statement follows the government defending demonetisation after the RBI data showed yesterday that almost all the Rs 15.44 lakh crore junked currency notes were returned to the banking system. Harvey costliest natural disaster in US history H O U S TO N, AU G 3 1 (PTI): Hurricane Harvey, the costliest natural disaster in US history, may cost a whopping USD 160 billion in economic damages in Texas which resulted in massive destruction, killing 38 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless. Harvey, now a tropical depression, made the second landfall yesterday, slamming into the Louisiana coast near the Texas border hitting the region with recordbreaking rainfall and devastating floods. Harvey has brought the heaviest rainfall in US history, soaking Texas with more than 52 inches since it first made landfall last Friday. At least 38 people have been killed as a result of the devastating floods and that number was climbing as water receded, revealing the storm’s awful toll, officials were quoted as saying by the New York Times. Twenty people still remained missing in the city, according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo. The flooding in Houston, the fourth largest US city, is slowly receding in some areas for the first time since the weekend, authorities said.

Taking advantage of a less rainfall in Houston, Harris County authorities finally located a van, containing six members of the same family that had been washed off the road days earlier. All six were dead in what police say is the single deadliest incident stemming from Harvey, with victims ranging in ages from six to 84. More than 32,000 people were in shelters in Texas, and 30,000 shelter beds were available, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said. Accuweather estimated Harvey’s cost at USD 160 billion, making it the costliest natural disaster in US history. AccuWeather president Joel Myers called Harvey a “1000 year Storm” and said parts of Houston will be uninhabitable for weeks or months. More than 30,000 people took refuge 200 shelters, about 1,800 evacuees have been moved to hotels and other longer-term housing options, said Brock Long, Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In Houston, authorities opened two more megashelters after the convention

center quickly became packed with almost 9,000 evacuees. The National Hurricane Center warns of continuing flooding in parts of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. Nearly all of the repo r te d Ha r ve y- r e l a te d deaths resulted from people drowning in their flooded vehicles. One Indian student died yesterday after he nearly drowned in a swollen lake in Texas. More than 100,000 Indian-Americans living in and around Houston have also been badly hit by the monstrous hurricane. The Indian-American community has rallied themselves around to help people in distress. Indian businesses and places of worship were providing shelters to the displaced. Sunil Thakkar, a radio jockey by profession, was using his station to provide directions to people to safer places. “This unprecedented disaster had many volunteers working till three o’clock in the night, monitoring requests, assessing the situation and coordinati n g a s s i s t a n c e,” s a i d Achalesh Amar, a community leader.

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Agencies): The Trump administration notified Congress on Wednesday that it was putting $255 million in military assistance to Pakistan into the equivalent of an escrow account that Islamabad can only access if it does more to crack down on internal terror networks launching attacks on neighboring Afghanistan. The dueling messages sent to Pakistan — promising aid but attaching strings if the country’s counterterror efforts fall short — are part of an increasingly confrontational turn in an alliance that has long been strained. The United States has provided Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid since 2002. But the annual funding has declined in recent years as Washington became increasingly disenchanted with Pakistan’s quiet support for the Haqqani network and the Taliban, whose attacks have been responsible for the deaths of US troops in Afghanistan. Still, US officials have long recognized that Pakistan has tried to crack down on terror groups, and plays an important role in facilitating supply shipments to the US military in Afghanistan. Last week, in announcing his new strategy for the

war in Afghanistan, President Donald Trump excoriated Pakistan. “We can no longer be silent about Pakistan’s safe havens for terrorist organizations, the Taliban, and other groups that pose a threat to the region and beyond,” Trump said. He added: “We have been paying Pakistan billions and billions of dollars at the same time they are housing the very terrorists that we are fighting. But that will have to change, and that will change immediately.” State Department officials said that Trump’s promised changes would bring explicit conditions on military aid. Once Pakistan more aggressively pursues the Taliban and Haqqani network, the aid will be released — a determination to be made by Secretary of State Rex W Tillerson, officials said. Last week, Tillerson suggested that the United States’ patience with Pakistan was nearing a breaking point. “We’re going to be conditioning our support for Pakistan and our relationship with them on them delivering results in this area,” Tillerson said. Critics of US aid to Pakistan said the administration was still not being tough enough.

Musharraf declared fugitive in Benazir Bhutto’s murder trial

ISLAMABAD, AUG 31 (PTI): Pakistan’s former dictator Pervez Musharraf was today declared a fugitive by an anti-terrorism court which ordered seizure of his property and sentenced two senior police officers to 17 years in jail in the Benazir Bhutto murder case, nearly 10 years after her assassination. Bhutto, the Pakistan Peoples Party chief and a two-time prime minister, was killed along with more than 20 people in a gun and bomb attack in Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh during an election campaign rally on December 27, 2007. She was 54. The case was registered soon after her assassination and the trial went through many ups and down until it concluded yesterday in Rawalpindi. Judge Asghar Khan announced the verdict, declaring Musharraf a proclaimed offender and ordered seizure of his property. Musharraf, 74, has been living in Dubai since last year when he was allowed to leave Pakistan on pretext of medical treatment. The judge sentenced former Rawalpindi CPO Saud Aziz and former Rawa l Tow n S P K h u r r a m Shahzad — suspects out on bail — to 17 years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of

The authorities in Bangladesh - which already hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees from Myanmar - have been sending many back. The UN in Bangladesh said on Thursday that some 27,400 were estimated to have crossed the border since Friday, up from 18,000 a day earlier. Thousands more people are thought to be trapped in an unoccupied zone between the countries. Aid workers giving emergency shelter and food in Bangladesh said the refugees were in a “very desperate condition”. “People are traumatised,” said Sanjukta Sahany of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Some of the new arrivals had recent bullet wounds, aid workers said. Rakhine, the poorest region in Myanmar (also called Burma), is home to more than a million Rohingya.

L ondon , A ug 3 1 (Agencies): Bangladesh coast guards have found the bodies of 20 people who drowned fleeing Myanmar, amid a rising exodus from Rakhine state. The group, mostly women and children from the Rohingya minority, were trying to escape a recent surge of violence. The crisis erupted after Rohingya rebels attacked 30 police stations last Friday, triggering a military response. More than 100 people, mostly insurgents, have been killed and more than 27,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled. Authorities in Bangladesh have warned that people are becoming increasingly desperate and attempting to escape by boat. A coast guard official told AFP news agency the migrants were trying to flee on “rickety inland fishing boats” poorly equipped for the rough seas around Bangladesh.

here as the UK today marked the 20th death anniversary of the “people’s princess”. Members of the public have been visiting the Pal-

tour of the White Garden. Some public services are planned across the UK, including at East London’s Mildmay Mission Hospital, which the princess regularly visited when it was a hospice caring for HIV patients. Former members of staff will share their memories of her, alongside the hospital’s patron, actress Linda Robson, and dancer Wayne Sleep. The White Garden, designed as a tribute to her style and grace, and the commissioning of a new statue of their mother were the two memorials chosen by William and Harry to mark the 20th anniversary of her death. The statue will be erected somewhere in the grounds of Kensington Palace in the future.

The suspects - Rafaqat Hussain, Husnain Gul, Sher Zaman, Aitzaz Shah and Abdul Rashid - were arrested soon after the crime and have been in jail. They had denied the charges. All accused were present at the time of announcement of trial except Musharraf. The trial of five suspects started in January 2008, while Musharraf, Aziz and Shahezad were implicated in 2009 after fresh probe by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). “10 years later and we still await justice. Eight different judges heard the case during this period who were changed due to different reasons. Initially TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud was blamed for murder and Musharraf government issued a taped conversation of Mehsud with a certain operator in which he was congratulating the operator for the murder. But FIA Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Azhar Chaudhry in his concluding arguments disowned the evidence of audio record and transcript of telephonic conversation.

Israel forces shut Palestinian radio station

JERUSALEM, AUG 31 (IANS): Israeli forces shut down a Palestinian radio station in the West Bank on Thursday over charges of “incitement to terrorism”. A military statement said that troops raided the al-Huriya (Freedom) radio station in the West Bank city of Hebron, after it allegedly broadcast a song about a knife attack a Palestinian carried out in the Israeli settlement of Halamish in July, reports Xinhua news agency.

The traditional Bedouin-style song was performed during a wedding, with improvised lyrics saying “they said the (Israeli) army has all the power, (but) he burned Halamish, you bunch of settlers ... we just want to live”. The singer, Mou hamad Barghouthi, and some of his band members were arrested. “The station broadcast inciting content encouraging terror activities on a regular basis,” the statement said.

ctor Ajay Devgan said there was never any insecurity in his generation working with contemporaries but that does not seem to be the case with the young stars today. Ajay said it is not difficult to shine while standing in a frame with another actor. Filmmaker Rohit Shetty reportedly said his ‘Ram Lakhan’ remake fell through because the male actors were insecure about working together. Ajay, who has worked with Shetty extensively, voices the same concern and believes young actors are taking their work too seriously. “I don’t know why that’s happening. You have to ask them. But I think they are taking their career and work too seriously,” Ajay told. “You can stand in a frame with someone and shine. Why fear it? When you shine with somebody, you reach greater heights.” “When I look back... In 26 years, I think there must have been one or two years where I didn’t have a hit, otherwise if one didn’t work, the other did. There was never a low phase.” His current film, ‘Baadshaho’, is scheduled to release on Friday.

L o nd o n, Au g 3 1 (Agencies): Liverpool have completed the £35m signing of Alex OxladeChamberlain from Arsenal. The 24-year-old passed a medical on Wednesday after the Gunners accepted Liverpool’s bid for a player who made it clear he would not extend his Emirates contract beyond next summer. Six U-23 players in India’s Asian Cup Qualifier squad New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS): As many as six players from India’s AFC U-23 campaign in Doha were on Thursday named in the 24-member squad for India’s upcoming AFC Asian Cup Qualifier match against Macau on September 5. India currently stay on top of Group A with six points, courtesy back to back victories against Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan. However, national coach Stephen Constantine felt there is no reason to underestimate Macau as a team. “Macau will be playing at home and in front of their home crowd. There’s always a marked difference between playing at home and playing an away match, but we are aware of the challenge,” Constantine said on arrival. The team has been camping in Mumbai since August 12, and has played two international matches against Mauritius and St. Kitts and Nevis in the Hero Tri-nation Football series as part of the preparation. I’m here with England and we’ve got two big games coming up, so I want to focus on them. But I can’t wait to get to Melwood.” Oxlade-Chamberlain was used at wing-back in his final few months at Arsenal, and his desire to establish himself in central midfield was a motivating factor in his departure. Jurgen Klopp told the Liverpool website, “I hear a lot of talk about positions but let’s talk about the player; he is someone with really good abilities who always gives everything for his team. A player that is positive and willing to take risks to try and make positive things happen.” “ H e m ay s t i l l b e young but he has a lot of experience in the Premier League, Champions League and for his country. in a unanimous verdict. “I was thinking of turning professional by the end of this year but that plan is on hold for now. A right hand injury which had troubled me some years back, seems to have flared up again. I need to get it sorted immediately once I reach home,” Vikas, a middleweight 75kg boxer, said. The injury he was referring to relates to the

metacarpus, the intermediate part of the hand located between the wrist and the fingers. “I do eventually want to turn professional but for now I will focus on the Commonwealth Games next year and take things from there,” he added. Vikas was among the best medal hopes for India. He was the highest seed among the Indians at third when the draws

came out and was expected to do a lot better than the second-round finish he managed. The former Asian Games gold-medallist was disappointed with how

things panned out but has vowed to come back stronger. “Which athlete does not hurt from a loss? I am also disappointed,” he said.

A CELEBRATION of Life

Lt. Kenile Zoe Khing D/o Dr. (Mrs.) & Mr. Shalo Khing 1st Nov. 2013 – 26th Aug. 2017 You were a gift sent straight from Heaven. Given to us from God above. We didn’t know how much you would teach us About the meaning of true love... For true love sometimes means letting go Of someone precious and dear. That is what we were forced to do... Although we wanted to keep you here!! However, this is quite a selfish wish. One we know we should ignore... But our sweet Angel, we truly do believe That God must have needed you more... Perhaps to be an Angel now, Full of wisdom and love... Watching over those of us who love From the shining stars above. We miss you more than you can know. You will never be replaced... In our hearts and memories forever, Will be your sweet and innocent face.

Acknowledgement The family appreciates your prayers, expressions of love, calls of strength and support, words of encouragement and deeds of endearment. Your kindness is deeply appreciated and will always be remembered . DP-8729 K Y M C

The heavy defeat was also Sri Lanka’s biggest at home in terms of runs. Angelo Mathews (70) played a vital knock along with Milinda Siriwardana (39) to put up a 73-run stand before the latter was removed by Pandya. The right-back represented his country 40 times, including three appearances at the 2014 World Cup. Earlier on Wednesday, Tottenham also signed Argentine teenager Juan Foyth on a five-year deal from Argentine top-division football club Estudiantes. The club confirmed the transfer on their official website on Wednesday, saying the 19-year-old defender will wear the No. 21 shirt. Courtesy skipper Kohli’s 29th ODI hundred and his 219-run second-wicket stand with an in-form Rohit, India were able to lay the foundation for a massive total. Rohit, who hit backto-back hundreds, now has 13 three- figure scores in the 50-over format. Pandey too utilised his first chances of the series to the fullest while Dhoni missed out on his 100th ODI half century by a run. It was also India’s thirdhighest second wicket partnership against Sri Lanka in ODIs, after 318 at Taunton in May 1999, and 236 at Nagpur in March 1999 both set by Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. This was also their third 200-plus stand as a pair equalling the record held jointly by Sachin Tendulkar and Ganguly, as well as Gautam Gambhir and Kohli. Brief scores: India 375 for 5 in 50 overs (Rohit Sharma 104, Virat Kohli 131; Angelo Mathews 2 for 24) beat Sri Lanka 207 all-out in 42.4 (Angelo Mathews 70 , Wanidu Hasaranga 36; Kuldeep Yadav 2 for 31) by 168 runs.

Maria Sharapova returns a shot to Hungary’s Timea Babos

The Russian has a clear path to the semi-finals, where she could meet tournament favourite Garbine Muguruza of Spain. Sharapova got off to a shaky start as Babos, who mixed her game perfectly with serves to the body and sliced forehands, opened a 2-0 lead. The Russian eventually forced a tiebreak but made a mess of a couple of

forehands to hand Babos a deserved lead. Sharapova became more vocal as she saved break points in a sixth game that proved to be the turning point of the match. The 2006 US Open champion broke in the following game and held to clinch the second set as Babos sensed her chance was gone.

Sharapova then broke twice in the decider to move 4-1 ahead and ensure her third round place was a formality. Past US Open champions Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova also advanced. Williams reached the third round behind a 7-5, 6-4 win over France’s Oceane Dodin. Kuznetsova’s entry to the second round required a bit

of Kohima Football league as the match patron. Meanwhile, the first KTC Cup will be held from September 1- 9 at Kohima local ground. The eight teams which participated in the Kohima Football league will compete in the KTC Cup 2017 on knockout basis. The opening match of the cup will be played between Addax FC and Forerunners’ FC on September 1 at 1:30pm. President of Kohima District Football Association (KDFA), K. Neibu Sekhose will grace the inaugural session of KTC Cup as special invitee.

Once she found her groove midway through the second set, however, the 30-year-old, sporting a pale peach pink crystalencrusted dress, eventually shone like a diamond, tossing Babos aside in a one-sided decider. The Hungarian bowed out on the second match point when she sailed a backhand long, triggering a huge roar on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
