In order to set the record straight, P&IC stated that the DC Dimapur, through the EAC had “redirected” the letter to the concerned authority, referring to the office of the Commissioner of Police (CP), Dimapur. NPF M&PB’s stand on leadership issue
DIMAPUR: NPF media & press bureau (M&PB) has once again issued a statement, reiterating its position with regard to the ongoing leadership dispute and the tussle of the NPF Party Cock symbol and flag. In a press note, the M&PB said that the present revolt in the NPF against the central office was in many ways, a repeat of what transpired in the early part of 2015 when majority of the NPF legislators along with a sizeable number of party functionaries revolted against the chief minister and the party leadership. This time too, M&PB said majority of the NPF legislators “selected” Neiphiu Rio as the “interim NPF president” and served a 15-day ultimatum on NPF president, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu to step down. Rio was then re-designated as the NPF president on August 19. M&PB chose explain
to the people as to how the NPF party functions. It said like all ECI-registered political parties in the country, NPF has frontal organizations like the youth wing, women wing, minority wing, legislature wing among others. Citing an instance, M&PC said it would be absurd for the youth wing– having lost confidence in the leadership of the party president, Dr. Shürhozelie, and commanding majority of the office bearers – decide to select someone of its choice to become the interim president of the party. Same goes for the other wings including the legislature wing to select or elect the President of the political party they belong to, it said. To further elaborate, M&PB took the example of village councils under which comes the student unions, youth organisations, women organisations, etc.
M&PB said till date they have not heard of any student organisation in any village, having irreconcilable differences with the chairman of the village council, decide to select a person of its choice to be chairman. Likewise, M&PB said if any student organisation, in any of the villages, had taken such a ridiculous decision to replace the council chairman in their village, those student leaders would have been laughed at as the perpetrators of the biggest joke. “And except in Nagaland, there has never been an instance when a frontal organization of a political party has even attempted to replace the president of the political organization they serve under like the legislature wing of the NPF is trying to do now. After all, a child cannot decide who its father is, or shall be,” M&PB stated.

(NP) Correspondent KOHIMA, SEP 15 (NPN): Engineers in Nagaland have been asked to change the perception of stopping all engineering related works during summer season and have been advised to carry out their works throughout the year. Rohingya refugees are seen at Thaingkhali makeshift refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Aizawl/Agartala, Sep 15 (IANS): Security has been further tightened along the borders of northeastern states with Myanmar and Bangladesh to foil any attempt by the Rohingyas fleeing the Rakhine state in Myanmar from entering India, officials said on Friday. Top Assam Rif les and Border Security Force (BSF) officials in Aizawl and Agartala, however, confirmed that no illegal immigrant has been detected or intercepted in the bordering areas of the northeastern states. Four states - Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km) and Mizoram (510 km) - share 1,643-km of mountainous and unfenced border with Myanmar. Counter-insurgency trained Assam Rifles are guarding the India-Myan-
mar border. There is a 16-km-wide free zone (8 km on either side of the frontier) along this 1,643-km unfenced border. “Eight additional companies of Assam Rifles are being relocated at the India-Myanmar border to further strengthen security along the frontiers,” Inspector General of Assam Rifles Major General Upendra Dwivedi told the media in Aizawl. Deputy Inspector General of 23 Sector Assam Rifles Brigadier M.S. Mokha also said in Aizawl that there was no influx of Rohingyas to Mizoram yet. In view of the apprehension of influx, a high level meeting of various security officials was held at 23 Assam Rifles Headquarters in Aizawl on Thursday. “Since Mizoram and
other northeastern states are sharing a porous border with Myanmar, security forces are keeping roundthe-clock land and air surveillance on the influx of illegal Rohingyas along the borders,” Dwivedi said. The meeting was attended by senior officials of Assam Rifles, BSF, Central Reserve Police Force, state police and various intelligence agencies. A BSF official in Agartala said that there is no specific report of any possibility of influx of illegal Rohingyas into Tripura and other northeastern states through Bangladesh. “Our commanders are taking suitable steps to thwart any attempt by the Rohingyas who are fleeing Myanmar from entering Indian territories. The BSF is also prepared to deal with any eventuality,” the official said adding that no
Demand for CBI probe into youth’s death Correspondent
IMPHAL, Sep 15: NorthEast Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has demanded CBI enquiry into the controversial death of a Manipuri youth in New Delhi recently. Pravish Chanam (22), who had been missing for the last five days at Noida, was found cremated by authority of Dr BR Ambedkar hospital in Noida. The deceased had come to Delhi on a visit and had been residing in Safdarjung, Delhi with his friends. Taking the matter seriously, NEFIS on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Manipur chief minister through the resident commissioner of Manipur Bhavan in Delhi, seeking his immediate intervention in the matter. A statement of the NEFIS said that the deceased, who went missing after a concert on September 8, was taken in an injured condition to Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hopspital around 10.30 pm, where he was given first-aid by a doctor. However, it is not
known whether he was discharged or forcibly taken away after the first aid. “The next day, a call was received by the PCR of an injured person in Sector-30 Market. The PCR personnel took the injured youth, Pravish to Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hospital, where he subsequently died. It should be known that a complaint in connection to his disappearance was lodged at Knowledge Park Police Station, Gautam Budh Nagar on 9th September,” NEFIS stated in the statement. The for um alleged Delhi police of gross negligence in the whole matter. Despite the complaint being lodged on September 9, the ‘Person Missing’ pamphlets were issued two days later, it added. Despite the matter being pursued by police of one station, police Chowki personnel did not inform the station of an unclaimed dead body, NEFIS said while also alleging that the deceased’s friends, who went to Nithari PSto inquire about him were brusquely turned out by the police
Chowki personnel. It was found out on Friday that the body of the deceased was cremated by the police Chowki yesterday. “Clearly, it strongly suggests that Nithari police chowki personnel had in connivance with criminals disposed off the body instead of informing the Knowledge Park Police Station where the matter was being investigated,” the statement added. In the memorandum submitted to the chief minister, NEFIS has demanded Manipur government to immediately intervene and conduct a CBI inquiry into the case. The proposed inquiry should especially probe the nexus between the criminals, police and hospital authorities to destroy the evidences related to Pravish’s death, it demanded. NEFIS also urged the government to write to Uttar Pradesh chief minister to immediately suspend the Investigating Officer, Knowledge Park Police SHO and Nithari Chowki in-charge for gross negligence in the case.
special alert communication has been received yet from the headquarters. Earlier on many occasions, Rohingyas had entered Tripura and few other northeastern states via Bangladesh illegally in search of jobs. Subsequently, they were pushed back to Bangladesh after following the legal and security formalities. India shares a 4,096km long border with Bangladesh in the states of West Bengal (2,216 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km). Large parts of this border are riverine, mountainous and unfenced, thereby helping illegal immigrants, intruders and smugglers to cross over without much problem. Thousands of Muslims under the banner of Tripura State unit of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on Thursday took out a massive protest rally in Agartala to protest the reported atrocities on Rohingyas in Myanmar. The protesters criticised the State Counselor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi for “allowing oppression and persecution against the religious minority”. The protesters held placards with photographs showing the plight of the men, women and children refugees, who according to the UN are now 380,000 in numbers who have moved to southeast Bangladesh.

Too early to criticize government: Manipur CM Correspondent
IMPHAL, Sep 15: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Friday said that it was too early to hurl criticism at the BJP-led government in the state. Reacting to criticisms hurled by Congress party that almost all the projects and schemes inaugurated by the present government in the last five months were taken up during the regime of the Congress; the chief minister said that it was too early to resort to political bullying against the new government. Addressing media persons on the sideline of Meeyamgi Numit (People’s Day) at Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Biren Singh contended that the new government had completed five months only today. However, he added that people’s positive response to the developmental activities and initiatives of the present government was visible everywhere. Stating that it is too early to resort to political bullying, the chief minister said that people would decide the performance of the present government on their own. Refuting the allegation of renaming the Congressintroduced schemes by the BJP government to gain public support, Singh questioned whether Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was initiated by Congress. Maintaining that befooling the public through rhetoric political comments is no more relevant in the modern days, the chief minister said “It is the time for doing politics through visible performance with sincerity.”
N Biren Singh The people of India have witnessed the developmental changes brought by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past three years, he said while adding that the people of Manipur have also seen the progress made by the BJP-led government in the state in the last five months. Responding to a query regarding possible infiltration of Rohingya refugees, N Biren said that the state government had put security forces on alert at border areas especially at Moreh, Jiri and Behiang to check illegal entry of Rohingya Muslims into Manipur. Assam Rifles, state security forces and other security agencies have been keeping vigil at the unfenced areas of Indo-Myanmar border, he added. Arrested refugees, if any, would be handed over to the Central government authority for deportation, Biren added. Regarding KSA’s and JCILPS’ demand for cancellation of candidature of non-locals from Panchayat elections, the chief minister said that he had directed the DCs and SPs to check whether there were any wrongful nomination of candidates.
Assam Congress objects to dredging Brahmaputra GUWAHATI, Sep 15 (Agencies): The Congress in Assam has opposed to the BJP’s ambitious project of dredging river Brahmaputra stating it is not a feasible project. Citing the report of the expert committee on fluvial morphology of Brahmaputra, sediment management with a possibility of dredging by adopting modern technology set up by the Assam government, Congress stated that dredging the entire length of the Brahmaputra ‘will not be a feasible option for mitigating the flood and erosion hazards’ caused by the mighty river. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora said, “Carrying out dredging activity will be waste of public money. This will not moderate flood situations. Even the committee appointed by the state government has opined against the dredging. The Assam government has rushed to procure dredgers without conducting a thorough study.” “The committee has obser ved that massive dredging in the Indian part of the Brahmaputra may change the water quality of the river and may impact the river’s aquatic ecology,” Bora added. The Assam government has asked a team of engineers to visit neighbouring Bangladesh to get a knowhow of the dredging process. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the department to depute a team of mechanical engineers for training at Bangladesh to enhance their knowledge.
Bad road due to monsoon, not Assam forms ‘State Capital negligence, says Mizoram CM Region’ around Guwahati Aizawl, Sep 15 (PTI): Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla Friday said bad road conditions in the state were a result of heavy monsoon, refuting charges by the Opposition that it was due to negligence on part of the government. Addressing Congress party workers during a session here, Thanhawla said the early advent of the monsoon season and heavy rains caused severe hardships for farmers in the state. The chief minister said heavy rains this year had caused 984 incidents of road blocks, 81 incidents of road collapse, along
with damage to 92 retaining walls and 83 culverts. The state government would need around Rs 30 crore for repair of the roads, retaining walls and culverts, Thanhawla added. Opposition Mizo National Front had recently called for a 12-hour bandh in protest against inferior road conditions in the state. MZF senior vice-president Tawnluia had alleged that the bad road conditions in the state were due to corruption. Truck operators in Mizoram had also called for a three-day strike earlier in the week against poor road conditions.

Jaya Sukin to serve a copy of his petition on Attorney General K.K. Venugopal. Sukin appeared for the petitioner N.S. Ponnaiah who is a 73-year-old lawyer from Madurai. The petitioner has sought that awareness should be created about the fatal consequences of the Blue Whale game. The Blue Whale Challenge, reportedly created by a former convict in Russia, is said to psychologically provoke players to indulge in daring, self-destructive tasks for 50 days before finally taking the “winning step of killing themselves. The petitioner said the Blue Whale game is snatching the life of children and adults which has already caused huge damage. He added that because of this game parents were living in panic and did not know how to deal with the situation. The petitioner lawyer noted that the game was gaining popularity through social media and referred
to media reports that about 200 people have committed suicide while playing the on-line game.
Monitor child’s online, social media activity: Govt on ‘Blue Whale’
A government advisory on ‘Blue Whale Challenge Game’ has asked guardians to monitor their children’s online and social media activity to ensure that they are not engaging with the deadly game which has led to a spate of suicides in India and other countries. It has asked them not to talk about the game “unless there is reason to believe your child already knows of or has played the game as discussing it may “increase the chance that your child will search for it on their own, said the advisory issued by the ministry of electronics and IT. At least, nine suicides linked to the game have been reported in the country over the past few months, with latest being a 13-year old boy in Lucknow
who hanged himself last week. “Blue whale game (The suicide game) is abetment to suicide. It is understood through various internet reports that it is shared among secretive groups on social media networks. The creators seek out their players/victims who are in depression and send them an invitation to join, said the advisory dated September 13. The advisory explained that the basis of the challenge is that an anonymous ‘group administrator’ otherwise known as ‘the curator’ hands out 50 tasks to selected ‘players’ that must be completed, documented and posted during a 50-day period. “Players of the challenge can’t stop playing once they’ve started; they are blackmailed and cyber bullied into completing the ‘game’, the advisory said. It has suggested that guardians be attentive if they notice unusually secretive behaviour, mostly related to their online activity of their child.
told to decide Ryan murder case: Govt orders CBI probe Govt on trimming list of VIPs special security onECAIADMK issues
NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (Agencies): The Narendra Modi government sanctions special security, seen by many to signal VIP status, to 475 people, compared to the 350 protected by the previous Congressled government. The Union Home Ministry’s current list is an all-time high despite PM Modi’s firm drive against a VIP culture, and senior officers said the government is looking at reviewing and trimming it soon. “Some politicians are being provided security by NSG and also the paramilitary so some of them will lose their NSG cover, a senior ministry official said. Bihar politician Lalu Yadav who is guarded by both the elite National Security Guard (NSG) and the paramilitary CRPF, is no more a lawmaker and rarely moves out of his state now and his security is being reviewed, sources said, as is that for former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh of the BJP. Also M Karunanidhi, the 93-year-old leader of Tamil Nadu party the DMK, who is ill and barely moves out of his home. All these politicians
PM Narendra Modi’s government has granted VIP security to over 120 more people than earlier. currently have the highest Z plus security, which the government gives to 50 people, each guarded by 35 to 40 security personnel at any given time. The previous government had a list of 26. Removing or scaling down security is easier said than done, sources said, with political pressure every time there is such a move. An officer said there are also many complaints that VIPs misbehave with the security staff. Special security is provided by the Centre and state governments under several categories ranging from X to Z plus based on a threat perception that the government assesses from time to time; the difference is in the number of secu-
Dynasty in democracy is ‘nasty’: Naidu New Delhi, Sep 15 (PTI): Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu Friday hit out at dynastic politics, saying dynasty in democracy is “nasty, days after Rahul Gandhi talked about the phenomenon being present in the Indian system. “There is discussion about dynasty. Dynasty and democracy cannot go together. Very simple... it weakens our system. Dynasty in democracy is nasty, he said at a book launch but added that his remarks were not linked to any party. He said he used to voice similar views earlier too but now he hesitates as he is out of politics. Naidu, however, made it clear that he is not referring to any political party
while speaking against dynasty. “I am not keeping in mind any particular party – this party or that party -- as someone said everybody is trying to follow each other. Speaking at the University of California in Berkeley, Rahul had earlier this week said that dynasties are commonplace in India, from politics to business, and stressed that a person’s capabilities are more important than pedigree. “Most parties in India have that problem So...Mr Akhilesh Yadav is a dynast. Mr Stalin (son of M Karunanidhi in DMK) is a dynast... even Abhishek Bachchhan is a dynast. So that’s how India runs.
rity personnel that protect the person. People with Z category security get 30 guards, while people with Y Plus security get 11. So 30 policemen and paramilitary personnel are assigned for yoga teacher Baba Ramdev’s security. Spiritual leader Mata Aamritanandamayi too gets Z security, while Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, who is the chairman of the Ram Janmabhoomi Shrine Board gets Y security. Even controversial lawmaker Sakshi Maharaj is protected under the Y category. In addition, many people are given an NSG guard, including the children of at least 15 politicians, including union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s son Pankaj Singh, who is a first-time
lawmaker. Uttar Pradesh has the most VIPs with special protection, including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, former Chief Ministers Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati. NSG officials say that at least 15 politicians are guarded by its black cat commandos, including Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The government had withdrawn the NSG from the Assam chief minister’s security detail when the Congress’ Tarun Gogoi held the post, but restored it when Mr Sonowal of the BJP took over. The CRPF protects almost 75 VVIPS, BJP President Amit Shah and Minister of Road and Transport Nitin Gadkari, the CISF guards 75, including national security adviser Ajit Doval and Minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju, while the ITBP is assigned to protect 18, including Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and her predecessor Omar Abdullah. Mukesh Ambani, the country’s richest man pays for Z category security for himself, and Y category for his wife Neeta Ambani.

Palaniswami and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, merged.

A case of overkill
nion Minister Smriti Irani, tore into Rahul Gandhi after the latter criticised decisions of Modi over the note ban and rise in communal attacks besides the culture of intolerance. The very fact that Irani was fielded by the BJP to take on Rahul Gandhi over his speech in the US, is indication that in India it is considered a big offence like being anti-national to criticise the prime minister and woe on those who choose to ignore the red flags. Irani took a dig at Rahul for being an apologist for dynasties when he rolled out names of family dynasties in India who are in the limelight in politics as well as business. Not to let an opportunity pass by Smriti described Rahul as “a failed dynast” who “chose to speak about his failed political journey at a prestigious international institution,” and said it was “appalling to hear him say ‘dynast run everything in India’ when asked about dynastic politics. The other man who has recently become the angry old man of Bollywood and often taking quite a benevolent line on the Modi government of late, has been Rishi Kapoor. After Rahul Gandhi gave example of Bollywood while discussing ‘dynasty politics’ in India during his Berkeley speech, Rishi Kapoor advised him on Twitter to earn people’s respect via merit. In a series of tweets, Kapoor gave the example of his family, the Kapoors, as a dynastic clan that has managed to earn people’s respect generation after generation. Seen from the fact that Rahul spoke in measured tones in a speech he read out, it was clear that the criticism against Modi was justified and within the bounds of parliamentary conduct. The BJP had taken great umbrage at the prime minister being criticised abroad. In fact Modi has attacked the UPA government in no uncertain terms when he had gone abroad soon after being sworn in. Congress spokesman Anand Sharma refreshed the BJP’s memory on the issue. He said Modi had called the country corrupt on his first visit abroad and also said on another occasion that Indians used to feel ashamed to accept they are Indian on international soil. Modi had said after his coming to power the world has begun to respect India. If it is forbidden to criticise either the country or the prime minister abroad, then the BJP is suffering from a convenient amnesia. Modi had abused Dr. Manmohan Singh in parliament after the latter made a brilliant speech about the economic fallout of demonetisation. Thus, the reaction to Rahul’s speech was an overkill which did not deserve so much time and space. What is also interesting about what Rahul said abroad, is that he is ready to take on the mantle as Congress president (a post which his mother is keeping reserved). To understand that willingness as to also mean being prepared to be the prime minister also, is rather giving too much credence to a fantasy which most Congress people suffer from. Rahul may have suddenly found some confidence but unfortunately for his party, it is too little and too late. The Congress scion has wasted all those years when UPA was power (a good ten years) when he did nothing. Thus, Irani has only done a favour by attacking Rahul when no one bothered about it.
DailyDevotion What To Renounce We have renounced the hidden things of shame… —2 Corinthians 4:2 Have you “renounced the hidden things of shame” in your life— the things that your sense of honor or pride will not allow to come into the light? You can easily hide them. Is there a thought in your heart about anyone that you would not like to be brought into the light? Then renounce it as soon as it comes to mind— renounce everything in its entirety until there is no hidden dishonesty or craftiness about you at all. Envy, jealousy, and strife don’t necessarily arise from your old nature of sin, but from the flesh which was used for these kinds of things in the past (see Romans 6:19 and 1 Peter 4:1-3). You must maintain continual watchfulness so that nothing arises in your life that would cause you shame. “…not walking in craftiness…” (2 Corinthians 4:2). This means not resorting to something simply to make your own point. This is a terrible trap. You know that God will allow you to work in only one way— the way of truth. Then be careful never to catch people through the other way— the way of deceit. If you act deceitfully, God’s blight and ruin will be upon you. What may be craftiness for you, may not be for others— God has called you to a higher standard. Never dull your sense of being your utmost for His highest— your best for His glory. For you, doing certain things would mean craftiness coming into your life for a purpose other than what is the highest and best, and it would dull the motivation that God has given you. Many people have turned back because they are afraid to look at things from God’s perspective. The greatest spiritual crisis comes when a person has to move a little farther on in his faith than the beliefs he has already accepted.

Post-mortem Pan Naga-Hoho under Framework Agreement
very Living Naga soul without exception has been craving for lasting peace in our land. It has also been the ultimate will of every Naga with a modicum of gray matter that the content of the Framework Agreement (FA) between the GoI and NSCN (IM) on 3rd August 2015 is made known to the people before the final settlement is inked and not after their fate is irrevocably sealed. What would sovereignty be worth if our individual rights are going to so contemptuously be trampled to the dust as is the case even right now? The reason for nondisclosure is only known to the unquestioned supremo of NSCN (IM) the ‘Anointed one’ along with a few, very few hardcore sycophants belonging to his own tribe mostly. Well fellow Nagas, wherever you are, opportunity has fortunately surfaced at last for the Nagas, to critically analyse some of the salient contents of the FA that has been unearthed form very reliable sources...on two major sectors concerning: (1) Model of Shared Sovereignty; And (2) Pan-Naga Hoho. This author is confidently certain that the document being presented for public review is very reliably authentic. Today we shall deal with the contents of sector (2) concerning The Pan-Naga Hoho which more or less defines the final status of the present State of Nagaland after the settlement. The personal analysis of the author is being withheld for the time being lest he is accused of trying to unfairly influence the minds of the masses. This will give every concerned citizen a fair chance to take their judgement call on how they feel about this document. Remember too that the top echelon of NSCN (IM) have insultingly ‘written off ’ the Nagas of Nagaland as ‘incompetent’ to understand these contents of FA. For the first round the author presents this document without correcting any spelling or grammatical mistakes therein Verbatim (Quote): The Pan-Naga Hoho is a statutory body with executive authority, Budgetary and Negotiating powers. The formation of the Pan-Naga Hoho is a part of the Framework Agreement (FA) signed between the Govt of India and the NSCN (IM) on the 3rd August, 2015 at New Delhi, India. Being a statutory body, it will function beyond territo-

The political Naga
any writers define the term ‘Naga’ in many ways based on their available sources. But the term ‘Naga’ as we understand is based on the common characteristics of all Nagas. However, the term ‘Naga nation’ is to be viewed from the commonness of all these dimensions - biological, cultural, social, historical, geographical, religious and political. Like other nations, the Nagas too have their own common identity to belong. When we say Naga -‐‑ they are one; there is no white Naga or black Naga. The term Nagaland Nagas, Manipur Nagas, Assam Nagas, Arunachal Nagas, and Burma Nagas are divisive languages the colonial power used for controlling the Nagas under the ‘policy of divide and rule.’ But being mere biological Nagas is meaningless if they are not wedded to a common political will. All Nagas belong to a common DNA, a common history, a common culture, a common root of languages, a common territory and a common social belief, but they are never a formidable force to create states if they are not political. Therefore, it requires of them a common political will to create a state of their own. Politics is the prime factor. It is political idea/concept that moves and transforms the old world into a new one. It is it that inspires and guides the Nagas in their movement. It is it that makes them strong militarily and politically. Be it biological Nagas or cultural Nagas or territorial Nagas or ethnic Nagas, all can be gradually assimilated into the ocean of cultural imperialism of a stronger power if we are not rooted in the solid ground of our politics. Our nation calls for political Naga generations.
Political Nagas are those who advocate for cause of the people and fight for it. Political people are revolutionary. Liberation of a people and creation of a nation-‐‑state without revolutionary generations is a futile exercise. Formation of an organization without revolutionary leaders and workers and participation in a people’s movement without revolutionary spirit are all houses of cards. In order to transform the Nagas into a revolutionary people it demands of us a revolutionary organization composed of revolutionary generations who are also called ‘Nazirites’ in Biblical term. The Naga people today call for Nazirites. On the contrary, we are witnessing mushroom growth of organizations in our land formed by groups of individuals in the stolen name of the people and nation. But people don’t subscribe to the formation of un-‐‑mandated organizations. People say they have seen for themselves who they are. They know if they are principle-‐‑based or not; they know whether they have fought the enemies or not in the time of confrontation; People have also noticed bankruptcy of revolutionary spirit in them; Can they deliver the goods to the people? Do they know who are their brothers, who are their people and who are their enemies? National movement for independence is a serious business of the people generally led by a mandated organization manned by revolutionary generations and leaders, without which is a wishful thinking. It is not a claim, but a fact that NSCN is the only authentic political organization of the Naga people today. As mandated it has been faithful to the cause through thick and thin.
Clinging to the principle it stood the ground in fighting the enemies when many have deserted and joined forces with the enemies’ camp betraying the people and the cause. Thousands of NSCN members have been martyred for the cause and thousands more are ready for any eventuality. Many workers big and small have suffered horrible life in prison for the cause and many more are still languishing in jails for it. As mandated NSCN leaders spoke in the international political arena for the cause. In the negotiation front too it negotiates with the Government of India without betraying the principle. We are sure our people know NSCN has not failed politically at any point of time. Truth and justice are the foundations of all governments. We all know commotion and crisis in the land arise when one of these principles is missing in the administration of the governments. NSCN is deadly opposed to corruption and any form of immorality practiced by the leaders and the led. Nonetheless, collection of taxes should never be interpreted in terms of crime. All governments on earth are run by taxes from the people. People are the bank of their governments. No commercial commodity even a needle is free from taxation system. Tax is the bloodline of governments. However, NSCN views extortion and evasion of taxes as crimes against the people and state to be combated. We trust in God, the Creator of heaven and earth. Relation between the Naga people and God is a principle matter. Nagas are not independent of God because Creator and created are inseparably interrelated. The Name of the Lord is in the
movement of the Nagas that His presence has been with us in the fighting front, in the diplomatic front and in the negotiating front. Yes, we organize fasting prayer meetings every now and then and we will continue to do so because there lies our invincible hidden strength. Prayer is one of the fronts where we fight against the enemies and it is also our survival strategy. We are sorry for those who view our fasting prayers from their farcical perspective. There are three stages through which a people grow into a developed nation. The time of confrontation, the time of negotiation and the time of building and it is true with the Nagas too: In the time of confrontation, we fight and talk of fighting and violations of human rights committed against the Nagas by the Indian armed forces. But the time of confrontation has now gone giving room to negotiation. Through the grace of the Lord we have come to the stage of negotiation passing through all hurdles. In this time of negotiation every one of us is now talking of cease-‐‑fire and peace process going on between the government of India and the Nagas represented by NSCN. And the historic ‘Framework Agreement’ is the talk of the people everywhere in the land. Nevertheless, we cannot keep fighting for decades and centuries; we cannot keep talking for years and decades. Solution must be worked out and that the Framework Agreement has been officially signed. The architects of this agreement foresee that this agreement will strengthen India in many ways and open a new era for the Nagas that betrayal to it by one of them will be an irreparable loss for both. We believe our people understand this reality.
Finally, we are now landing to the stage of building: it is the time to talk about how to build our devastated villages, homes and towns and development system; it is time to talk about how to rebuild our shattered infrastructure of social system, disoriented education system and it is the time to talk about how to rebuild the damaged psychology of our people, the damaged relationship between our people and our neighbours and our people and the Indians by this protracted war. Our relationship with India is paramount in many fields. We fight when fighting is a must; we fight not because we love war but because we love the cause. We talk when negotiation on issue is imperative. NSCN
fights when principle of the Naga nation is threatened because it is principle-based. NSCN fights when the Naga national issue is challenged because it is issue-‐based. NSCN fights when future of the Nagas is in danger of murder because it is future‐oriented. It does not believe in the politics of mudslinging and gossiping; it is so because it is not in the blood of revolutionary. We don’t think NSCN has failed the people. NSCN is the home of revolutionary political Nagas; it is the guiding star and the bulwark of the Naga people. NSCN will stay with the Naga people so long as it is revolutionary. Kuknalim! On the new Naga council building
Sir,
I’m just a young Naga girl working in some private company and have my own little dream to achieve big in the coming days so I just wanted to open my own shop and set up a little business in order to stand on my own feet. Seeing the NCD building being constructed, it raised hopes of many Naga youngsters like me. But to my utter dismay, even before the full completion of the building it is wholly occupied by non-Nagas. I don’t want to sound racist or discriminate any people but I honestly feel that Naga Council Dimapur should let out its premises to our Young Nagas who have no other alternative way of earning their livelihood. With government jobs reaching a saturation point, we can only depend on opening some small business outlets to earn our livelihood. Being female, manual works are hard for us to do. It is indeed sad to see that we Naga are being deprived in our own land by our so called leaders of organization such as the NCD when they should reallyworking for the Nagas welfare in general and the younger generation in particular. I hope our NCD leaders live up truly to the tag NAGA for which they are sitting in their chair otherwise the nomenclature and their chairs they sit upon is meaningless and is anti-Naga. A. Sema

VP for simultaneous polls, strident anti-defection law
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu releasing the book ‘Loktantra ke Utsav ki Ankahi Kahani’ authored by S Y Quraishi, in New Delhi on Friday. (PTI)
New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS): Stressing that the perennial electoral cycle hampered developmental projects in the country, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday strongly pitched for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. “The time has come to take a serious look at the possibility of simultaneous elections to Parliament and state assemblies, and even municipal bodies, panchayats and cooperative bodies. Otherwise, in this country, this festival of elections will go on,” he said. “In India, there is a continuous election season
and election fever. Development takes a big hit. This has to be understood by all. That is why this suggestion for simultaneous elections,” the Vice President added. He made the remarks after unveiling book “Loktantra Ke Utsav Ki Ankahi Kahani”, the Hindi version of “An Undocumented Wonder - The Making of the Great Indian Election” written by former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi. He said the current practice of conducting elections in just a few states at a time tended to divert the country’s attention away from development and slowed progress.
NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday asked all high courts to register a suo motu petition to identify kin of prisoners who admittedly died an unnatural death after 2012 and award suitable compensation to them. Passing a slew of directions on prison reforms, the apex court directed all state governments to appoint counsellors and support persons for counselling prisoners, particularly first-time offenders. It also directed all states to study the availability of medical assistance to prisoners and take remedial steps wherever necessary. “We request the Chief Justice of the high court to register a suo motu public interest litigation with a view to identify the next of kin of prisoners who have admittedly died an unnatural death as revealed by the NCRB during the period between 2012 and 2015 and even thereafter and awards suitable compensation, unless adequate compensation has already been awarded,” a bench of Justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said.

Transport Ministers to discuss reforms and road safety
New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS): Transport ministers from all the states will meet in Gujarat’s Vadodara on the coming Tuesday to discuss transport reforms and seamless transport across state borders among other issues, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said here on Friday. The day-long 38th meeting of Transport Development Council and State Transport Ministers will also include the director of Transport for London (TFL) via video conferencing, to give the Indian ministers a first hand exposure to such modern facilities, an official statement said. The Transport Council will also discuss seamless transport across state borders under the GST regime.
“ We s h o u l d h ave learnt this in the last 69 years of our experience. Till 1967, elections were held simultaneously... a festival should be a festival, it should be celebrated only once in a while and not constantly,” he said. Naidu also advocated for a more rational and more stringent anti-defection law. “There is an imperative need to revisit the antidefection law. We must examine as to what extent it has served its purpose, and if needed should be amended and made more stringent,” the Vice President said. “Earlier, retail defection was bad, but now wholesale defection is allowed. People justify it by saying this is not defection but affection. It is also a disease weakening our democracy. We should deliberate and have a perfect anti-defection law,” Naidu said. He also underlined the need to judicial disposal of election-related disputes in a time-bound manner as delayed judgments become meaningless.

It said if Kenye’s claim that the “NPF central headquarters (minority group) is the authority to allow holding of the General Convention, then perhaps he (Kenye) should explain as to why he did not address his order to the Election Commission of India.” P&IC said it was suspiciously strange as to
why the minority NPF did not write to the ECI, which was the competent authority to adjudicate on disputes within a political party. “One can only surmise that they know very well what will be the outcome as all their appeals/ petitions have been rejected/dismissed by the Courts,” P&IC added. Refuting Kenye’s explanation on status quo that-- “things should be maintained as it was earlier”, P&IC said status quo meant “that things be kept the way as it is at present while status quo ante means the state of affairs that existed previously.” It said that the September 11, 2017 court order clearly mentioned-“In the meanwhile, status
Involve all parties for policy on Rohingyas: Congress New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS): Describing the influx of Rohingya refugees into India as “very serious”, the Congress on Friday demanded that the central government involve all parties to formulate a policy on the matter. “This is a very serious matter. In the interest of the nation, all political parties should come together to take a decision on this. “The government should invite representatives of all parties and lay down a policy.

Aadhaar is a safe and secure tool for good governance and empowerment.” “Aadhaar represents digital identity, not physical identity, and that digital identity confirms physical identity. The purpose of linking PAN with Aadhaar is to stop money laundering,” he said. The Summit was organised by the Haryana government with a view to bringing together industry experts, visionaries, thought leaders, policy makers, academicians and co-operative heads on a single platform. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Urban Local Bodies Minister Kavita Jain were also present at the Summit. Prasad said he was proud of the Indian
IT industry which had held high the Indian flag in 200 cities of 80 countries across the globe. While reiterating the commitment of the central government towards providing affordable and inclusive technology to the people, he said the concept of Digital India would help create an inclusive society. About 30 lakh people are directly working in IT companies across the country, out of which a third are women. “Digital India is a means to bring a smile on the faces of the poor and common people. The central government has opened 30 crore accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojna, and these have been linked with Aadhaar during the last one-and-half years. The beneficiaries are

But, P&IC said Kenye’s September 12 order clearly replicated the same as “…has been pleased to order status quo as on date.” To this, P&IC said it was unbecoming of Kenye to lie so blatantly. It further, advised Kenye “to refrain from misleading the people with half-baked knowledge and misinterpretation of legal parlance, which was clearly above the scope of his understanding as confessed by him.” It went on to state that Kenye’s order being only a “request for compliance” was an insult to the intelligence of the people since “requests” are “considered” while “orders” are “complied” with.

While lauding the efforts of the Haryana government led by Chief Minister Khattar, Prasad said that with the launch of Cyber Security Policy (on Friday), the state had become the first state in the country to implement this policy.

Friday demanded withdrawal of central excise duties and other taxes on petrol and diesel and said it will hold a demonstration at the Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday to press for this demand. The party dared the government to come out with a White Paper on taxes on fuel and the gains made by oil marketing companies. Congress Spokesperson Ajay Maken said the party’s Delhi unit will launch a campaign at petrol pumps across the city to protest against the fule price hikes and collect 10 lakh signatures, which will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Maken said that considering the fall in crude oil prices in the international market, the prices of petrol and diesel should be Rs 34 and Rs 32, respectively. “While the Modi government has spelled out absurd reasons like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma for the increase in petrol and diesel prices, it has dealt a devastating blow to the savings of the common people by brazenly increasing central excise duty 11 times in the past three and half years,” Maken told the media here.

Hyderabad, Sep 15 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : R a h u l Gandhi may take charge as Congress president through an “internal election process” as early as next month, senior party leader M Veerappa Moily hinted on Friday. “Everybody (in Congress) feels it is (his elevation) delayed. Now, he (Rahul) is waiting for organisation elections. He would like to emerge as the president of AICC only out of the election process,” PTI quoted him as saying. Asked if Rahul would take over the mantle next month, Moily said, “Possibly yes”. He added that Rahul’s elevation would be a game-changer for the party. “He (Rahul) should immediately take over as Congress president. That’s good for the party, good for the country,” Moily said.
Rahul had recently said he was “absolutely ready” to take up an executive responsibility if the party asked him to do so. The internal poll process at the state-level is likely to be completed this month while the one at the AICC level would be held next, the ex-Karnataka CM said. Exuding confidence over Rahul’s ability to steer the party, Moily said that the Gandhi scion has a “new approach and new method”. “Congress is wellrooted in continuity and legacy... With Congress virtues, he (Rahul) has an attitude for change, and he will do that,” Moily said. Asked what needs to be done to boost the party prospects, he said, “Rahul Gandhi is doing it. “We will have to address the issues in respect

There is no question of BJP coming back.” Moily charged the BJP with failure to honour election promises and alleged that the economy and exports have sharply declined. “They (NDA government) have failed miserably. This is a worst scenario. The myth of the present NDA government will explode during the Lok Sabha elections in 2019,” he said. On the government favouring bringing petroleum products under the ambit of GST, Moily, the former oil minister, indicated that it would have to be done eventually.

ending at 64.08, a gain of 4 paise or 0.06 per cent. The rupee had dropped by 12 paise, or 0.19 per cent, yesterday. The domestic currency hovered in a range of 64.14 and 64.04 per dollar during the day. In the overseas market, the dollar index against a basket of six major currencies was trading down by 0.27 in the late afternoon trade. The US dollar put in a mixed performance versus major rivals yesterday following a knee-jerk spike on the back of economic data earlier in the session, including a stronger- thanexpected rise in consumer price inflation for August. However, the dollar rebounded against the yen in European trade today as traders quickly brushed off the latest missile fired over Japan by North Korea, after an initial dip in risk appetite across currency markets.

Mumbai Sep 15 (PTI): The rupee Friday staged a mild recovery by gaining four paise to close at 64.08 a dollar on fresh selling of the American currency by banks and exporters in view of weaker dollar overseas. The rupee gains were, to some extent, capped due to persistent foreign capital outflows. In the international market, the US dollar fell against safe haven yen after North Korea’s latest missile launch re-ignited geopolitical tensions. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 1,334.23 crore yesterday, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges. The rupee resumed marginally lower at 64.14 a dollar against Thursday’s closing level of 64.12 at the interbank foreign exchange market. However, the domestic currency recovered to 64.04 per dollar before

In the financial account, net foreign direct investment at June-end almost doubled to USD 7.2 billion in comparison to the inflows in the same period last fiscal.

Mumbai, Sep 15 (PTI): Gold prices recovered slightly at the bullion market here Friday on mild investor offtake, coupled with local buying interest at the lower levels. While silver eased further on continued speculative selling as well as muted industrial demand. Gold largely shrugged off geopolitical tensions on firing of another missile by North Korea that flew over Japan. Standard gold (99.5 purity) edged up by Rs 20 to close at Rs 29,905 per 10 grams from Thursday’s closing level of Rs 29,885. Pure gold (99.9 purity) also gained by a similar margin to end at Rs 30,055 per 10 grams as against Rs 30,035 previously. However, silver (.999 fineness) slipped by Rs 30 to finish at Rs 40,455 per kg as against Rs 40,485 yesterday.

said at the 78th Annual General Meeting here. Noting that media in general and newspapers in particular are at an “inflection point”, he said, “This is an apt time to support and strengthen the newspaper industry instead of subjecting it to taxation squeezes and attacks on revenue streams”. He said the INS was vigorously pursuing with the government “reasonable” fiscal and labour policies. Condemning attacks on media people by antisocial elements, he appealed to state governments and local law and order enforcing authorities to deal with such incidents “firmly with an iron hand” to ensure safety and protection of the press. Speaking about the wage boards, he said in the liberalised economic environment in India, there is no reason for continuing with the statutory wage fixation for newspaper employees.
Mumbai, Sep 15 (PTI): India’s current account deficit (CAD) rose sharply to USD 14.3 billion - or 2.4 per cent of GDP - at the end of first quarter of 2017-18, mainly on account of an increased trade gap. CAD stood at USD 0.4 billion, or 0.1 per cent of GDP, in April-June of 2016-17. The figure compares with USD 3.4 billion (0.6 per cent) for the quarter ended March 2017. “The widening of CAD on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis was primarily on account of a higher trade deficit (USD 41.2 billion) brought about by a larger increase in merchandise imports relative to exports,” said the Reserve Bank (RBI) while issuing the document on Developments in India’s Balance of Payments during April-June of 2017-18.

BENGALURU, Sep 15 (PTI): The demonetisation exercise “worsened” the financial position of newspapers due to fall in advertisements, the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) said today, urging the government to “support and strengthen” the industry. It also condemned incidents of violence and attack on media offices and journalists, describing them as “undisputedly serious threats to the freedom of press”. The society also appealed to the government to desist from constituting any more wage boards for journalists and non-journalists as no other industry has such a practice. “The Indian newspaper business is heavily dependent on advertising revenue and demonetisation has worsened the situation by squeezing spends across almost all categories of advertisers,” INS’ outgoing president Somesh Sharma

Panama verdict: Pakistan SC rejects Sharifs’ review petitions
Study shows high salt intake linked to diabetes risk
adding “If you are against the verdict then vote for lion on September 17.” Talking to reporters outside the court, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and Minister for Information Technology Anusha Rahman said the court’s decision was a “disappointment” for her party. Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan thanked the Supreme Court for ending what he referred to as the “rule of the mafia”. He said Sharif tried his best to pressurise the Supreme Court with “gimmicks” like his GT Road Rally after his disqualification. He said the Sharifs had attempted to get the monitoring judge removed during court proceedings to delay the cases against them, but their efforts have failed with the Supreme Court’s dismissal of review petitions. PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry termed the decision as “victory for good governance”.
London, Sep 15 (IANS): Besides high blood pressure, high intake of salt -- main source of sodium -- may be associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes, researchers have found. The findings showed that for each 2.5 extra grams of salt (equivalent to each extra gram of sodium) consumed per day, there was an average 43 per cent increase in the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. People who consumed more than 7.3gm salt a day displayed a 72 per cent increased risk of compared to those with the lowest below 6gm, said researchers from the Institute of Env ir o nm e nta l M e d ic ine (IMM), Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. According to researchers, the association sodium -- which makes up 40 per cent of salt -- may be because of a direct effect on insulin resistance, and/or by promoting high blood pressure and weight gain. Further, higher salt intake was also linked with a high risk of developing Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA)-- a form of Type 1 diabetes in which the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed by the body’s own immune system. The study showed that the effect of sodium intake on the risk of developing LADA was even greater, with a 73 per cent rise for each gram of sodium consumed per day. Patients with high risk leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes whose sodium intake was classed as ‘high’ (over 3.15 gm/day) were almost four times more likely to develop LADA than those consuming the lowest (under 2.4gm/day).
Islamabad, Sep 15 (IANS): In a massive blow to Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the review petitions filed by the deposed Prime Minister and his children against the July 28 Panama Papers judgement. The ruling PML-N called the verdict a “disappointment” while Sharif ’s daughter and party leader Maryam Nawaz said “revenge was being taken in the name of accountability”. A five-judge SC bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa had taken up the petitions seeking review of the court’s ruling which disqualified Sharif and ordered the filing of corruption cases against him and his children -- Hussain, H a s s a n a n d M a r ya m Nawaz, son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. “For the reasons (to be) recorded later, all these review petitions are dismissed,” Justice Khosa announced. Christian man sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pak Lahore, Sep 15 (PTI): A Christian man in Pakistan was sentenced to death for blasphemy after he sent a WhatsApp message to a friend that insulted Islam, his lawyer said Friday. Nadeem James Masih was charged in July after his friend Yasir Bashir told the police that he sent him a poem on the messaging service that was insulting to Islam. Following the incident, Masih fled from his home in Sara-e-Alamgir town in Punjab province to escape an angry mob that had gathered there, but later surrendered to the police. His trial continued for more than a year at the Gujrat Jail, about 200 kilometres from the provincial capital Lahore. Besides the death sentence, Masih has been fined Rs 300,000, a court official told PTI. Masih’s lawyer Anjum Wakeel said his client was “innocent”. “My client will appeal in the Lahore High Cour t as he has been framed for having an affair with a Muslim girl.” Wakeel said the case against Masih was heard inside the prison due to security reasons. A police official said
the family of Masih had been taken into protective custody and moved to an undisclosed but safer location. Pakistan, a Muslimmajority state, has a population of nearly two million Christians.
The minority community has previously been targeted by hardline religious groups and militants for blasphemy in Pakistan. In 2015, a Christian couple was burned in a brick kiln for desecrating the Quran.

Cassini’s 13-yr Saturn mission ends in fiery crash
A joint endeavour of NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Italian space agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI), Cassini was a sophisticated robotic spacecraft launched in October 1997 to study the ringed planet and its system in detail.
Washington, Sep 15 (PTI): NASA’s USD 3.9 billion Cassini spacecraft Friday ended its 20-year-long groundbreaking journey with a fiery plunge into the Saturn’s crushing atmosphere, beaming back neverbefore-seen images of the ringed planet and its mysterious moons until the last moment. Operators deliberately made Cassini, the first spacecraft to orbit Saturn, dive into the gas giant to ensure that the planet’s moons - in particular Enceladus, with its subsurface ocean and signs of hydrothermal activity - remain pristine for fu-
ture exploration. “Our spacecraft has entered Saturn’s atmosphere, and we have received its final transmission,” NASA said in a tweet. “Every time we see Saturn in the night sky, we’ll remember. We’ll smile. And we’ll want to go back,” the US space agency said. The spacecraft’s fateful dive was the final beat in the mission’s Grand Finale, 22 weekly dives, which began in late April, through the gap between Saturn and its rings. No spacecraft has ever ventured so close to the planet before, NASA said.

Berlin, Sep 15 (Agencies): Qatar is ready to sit at the negotiating table to try to end a dispute with its Gulf Arab neighbours, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani said on Friday in Berlin. “As you know we have had a siege of more than 100 days against Qatar,” al-Thani told a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. “We spoke about Qatar`s readiness to sit at the table to solve this issue.” Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic and trade links with Qatar on June 5, accusing the major gas-exporting Gulf state of financing terrorism and cozying up to their arch-rival Iran. Doha denies the charges. Merkel said she was concerned that there was still no solution to the crisis, adding she supported efforts by Kuwait and the United States to mediate an end to the dispute.

agency. It flew higher and further than one fired over Japan late last month, the reports said. Speaking after the launch, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said it was “totally unacceptable” and went against “the international community’s strong, united will for a peaceful solution” to the Korean crisis. South Korea responded within minutes by firing two ballistic missiles into the sea in a simulated strike on the North. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also condemned the North Korean launch and the UN Security Council will meet at the request of Washington and Tokyo. China, North Korea’s ideological ally, called the missle test “a violation of UN Security Council resolutions”. “China objects to the North’s move to launch missiles by using ballistic technology in violation of UNSC resolutions,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said. Friday’s missile test followed the release of a statement on Wednesday in which the North Korean state news agency KCNA threatened the “four islands of the (Japanese) archipelago should be sunk into the sea by the nuclear bomb of Juche”, referring to the ruling ideology of North Korea. The Japanese government issued a J-Alert and advised “people to stay away from anything that could be missile debris”. The launch also seemed to be intended to send a message to the US, flying a distance equivalent to that from North Korea to Guam, the US territory that has come under threat from Pyongyang in recent weeks.

Australia call up Handscomb Chennai, Sep 15 (Agencies): Peter Handscomb has been added to Australia’s ODI squad in India as cover for the injured Aaron Finch. Finch aggravated his right calf during Australia’s warm-up on Thursday and pulled out of the rest of the training session to ice the damaged muscle. The aggressive opener will not be available for the opening games. “Aaron has had a scan in Chennai and although we believe it is not a serious recurrence, he will not be available for the first few one day matches here in India,” team physio Alex Kountouris said in a statement. “He will remain with the squad whilst we assess the injury and establish his return to play timelines.” The opening match of the one-day series starts in Chennai on Sunday.

Five-time European champions Bayern Munich and Barcelona also broke their club records for Corentin Tolisso and Ousmane Dembele respectively. FIFA’s report found that clubs in Europe’s top five leagues spent $3.67 billion, a new transfer-window record. “Once again, clubs from the Big 5 (England, Spain, France, Germany and Italy) took centre stage, completing 21.2 percent of the total incoming transfers and spending 77.9 percent of the total global spend,” football’s world governing body added. England saw the most money spent on players, with a total amount of $1.4 billion more than double that of any other country. The chaotic nature of the transfer window has seen calls for reforms, with English Premier League clubs voting to end their window before the start of the 2017-18 season.

Mumbai, Sep 15 (PTI): The upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup, to be held in the country next month, could lead to a massive interest in football if the event gets good exposure in the Indian media, said Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs Friday. “Well a lot of things have to be right, (like) exposure on TVs. The reporting of the event has to be good and it has to capture the imagination,” Giggs told reporters here when asked what will be the impact of the FIFA U-17 World Cup on Indians. “I know cricket is the number one sport, but also there are a lot of football fans in India. If the exposure is there and people sit down with the families

So, if India get it right with the U-17 Championship, then it will last for a long time, which can only be good for football in India,” the former player added.

PARIS, Sep 15 (Agencies): The close-season transfer window saw $4.71 billion (3.96 billion euros) spent worldwide, over three quarters of which were from the top five European leagues, FIFA announced on Thursday. Paris Saint-Germain’s world-record signing of Neymar from Barcelona for 222 million euros ($264 million) dominated the headlines, but many of Europe’s other big clubs also broke their own transfer records. “Between June 1 and September 1, 7,590 international transfers were completed worldwide,” FIFA said in a statement. “Global spending reached $4.71 billion, meaning clubs spent almost as much during those three months as they had in the whole of 2016 ($4.79 billion).” PSG also signed teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe from Monaco on a season-long loan, with an option to make him the second-most expensive player of all-time for 180 million euros. Largely down to PSG, France saw the big-
added a third on the stroke of half-time as he slotted past Maarten Stekelenburg. Also, Andre Silva scored a hat trick as AC Milan eased to a 5-1 victory over Austria Vienna. Milan came firing out of the traps with two goals inside the first 10 minutes as Hakan Calhanoglu rifled a strike into the top corner, before Andre Silva slotted home Calhanoglu’s pass. Silva added a third on 20 minutes after linking up with Calhanoglu again before Vienna pulled one back just after the restart through Alexandar Borkovic’s header. But Silva restored Milan’s three-goal advantage when completing his hat trick in the 56th minute and Suso then made it five in the 63rd minute with a longrange strike.

Kolasinac levelled less than four minutes after coming off the bench and Alexis Sanchez, a surprise starter ahead of a trip to Chelsea on Sunday, scored a marvellous solo goal before Hector Bellerin secured the win late on. Meanwhile, Everton were taught a lesson by Atalanta as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat in their group-stage opener. Atalanta opened the scoring in the 27th minute, with Everton failing to deal with a corner and Andrea Masiello firing home the loose ball. Lo n d o n, S e p 1 5 (Agencies): Arsenal came from behind to beat Cologne in their delayed Europa League opener against a backdrop of crowd trouble at the Emirates Stadium. Kickoff was delayed by an hour as ticketless away supporters attempted to enter the ground, with plenty of Cologne fans sat in among the home section when the tie finally got under way, with the Gunners eventually winning 3-1. Four arrests were made on suspicion of public order offences as extra police were deployed to the scene. On the pitch, Arsene Wenger’s much-changed side showed determination to fight back from Jhon Cordoba’s early 40-yard strike and seal three points. It was only after the interval, following the intro-

PV Sindhu
SEOUL, Sep 15 (PTI): Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu progressed to the semifinals of women’s singles but it was curtains for Sameer Verma in men’s singles event at the $600,000 Korea Open Super Series on Friday. Sindhu, who had won the silver at the World Championship last month, recovered from a midgame slump to stave off the challenge from World No. 19 Minatsu Mitani of Japan 21-19 16- 21 21-10 in a match that lasted 63 minutes. The fifth seeded Indian, who had a 1-1 headto-head record against the Japanese, will next face either third seed Sung Ji Hyun or China’s He Bingjiao, seeded sixth at the SK Handball Stadium. A little more than five months ago, Sameer had defeated Son Wan in the opening round at India Super Series in March but since then the Korean has climbed to the top of world ranking. Early this morning, Sameer once again tried to get across the Korean but
top seed Son Wan dished out a gritty performance to beat the Indian 20-22 21-10 21-13 in an hour and nine minute duel. In the women’s singles, Sindhu eked out a 6-2 lead early on in the opening game but Mitani managed to claw back and turn the tables around, reaching 11-9 at the break. After a close battle till 16-16, Sindhu jumped to 19-16. Mitani then erased the deficit but Sindhu ensured she had the bragging rights after the first game as she sealed it quickly. In the second game, Mitani opened up a 8-4 lead but Sindhu surpassed her soon and was leading 12-9. But the Japanese once again clawed back at 13-13 and then moved away from the Indian to roar back into the contest. In the decider, Sindhu showed her class as she didn’t give any chance to Mitani to make any recovery after zooming to a 9-2 lead. She was 11-6 at the break, which she extended to 19-9 after the interval, before slamming the door on the Japanese.
