PM pins hope on youth of India
NEW DELHI, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday pinned his hopes on the youth power steering the nation towards job creation, cleanliness and social change during his address to the students’ convention on the theme of ‘Young India, New India’, on occasion of 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address and Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya’s centenary celebrations. Modi batted for innovation and promoting skills among the youth and asked them to work for a modern India. He said that the youth should become ‘Job-creators’ instead of becoming ‘Job-seekers’. Not just for self, Modi said that the youth of the country should do much more to ensure the country in its entirety benefits. He said, “We are not robots. We should promote creativity and do things and celebrate days to unite the country and promote celebration and respect of diversity.” PM also emphasised on the power of “Yuva Shakti’ (youth power) and said that he saw a vital place for youngsters in the realm of nation-building. The world evaluates the country where it is today

not what it was 5,000 years ago or during the times of Lord Rama or Buddha, the Prime Minister said. Vivekananda supported experimentation and innovation and his government was working according to the ideals shown by him, Modi said. PM also highlighted the importance of skill development. Explaining what he meant, PM threw some light through the example of Vivekananda and how he separated skill and knowledge. PM Modi said, “Education is not the amount of information, put into one’s brain, which may be there undigested all one’s life. It is, rather a life-building assimilation of ideas.”
PM quoted the famous lines of Vivekananda while addressing the students at the event and said, “If you have assimilated five ideas and made them, as your character, you have more education than any man who has got by heart the whole library. If education were identical with information, the libraries would be the greatest sages in the world and encyclopaedias, the greatest Rishis.” V i ve k a n a n d a , t h e prime minister added, had given the message of love and brotherhood. Modi used the occasion to speak against people who litter and said those who do so have no right to say Vande Mataram. The crowd intermittently shouted ‘Vande
Mataram’ as the Prime Minister spoke. Lauding sanitation and cleaning workers, he said they have the first right to say Vande Mataram. Urging people to keep their surroundings clean, Modi told the gathering that people may or may not keep their surroundings clean but nobody had the right to dirty places. “We chew ‘paan’ and spit it out on Mother India (Bharat maa par pichakaari mare) and then chant Vande Mataram. Throw garbage and then chant Vande Mataram... The sanitation and cleaning workers have the first right to say Vande Mataram,” he said. The Prime Minister also asked colleges to hold cultural events to celebrate other states and added in a light-hearted vein that he was not against celebrating days like rose day. Students should do more, Modi said, asking them hold a Tamil day in a Haryana college or a Kerala day in a Punjab college. “There is no better place for creativity and innovation than university campuses. There is no life without creativity. Let our creativity also strengthen our nation & fulfil the aspirations of our people,” he said.
3 Assam Rifles jawans injured in IED blast Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, SEP 11 (NPN): At least three jawans of the 15 Assam Rifles were injured in a bomb explosion Monday afternoon when the patrolling party came across an improvised explosive device (IED) triggered by suspected NSCN(K) cadres near the International Trade Centre (ITC) Dan, Pangsha area under Noklak sub-division of Tuensang district. According to AR sources, the IED went off when the 15 AR jawans were on routine patrol duty along the international border. AR sources alleged that cadres of the NSCN (K) had come across from Myanmar and planted the bomb to attack the security forces. In the explosion, one of the jawans was critically injured while the other two sustained minor injuries, sources said. When contacted, SP Tuensang Vikram Ezung also confirmed that the incident took place at around 2:30 p.m. at Pangsha. He said that one AR jawan was critically injured and was airlifted by chopper to Rangapahar military hospital, Dimapur. SP said that the ground report was awaited since a police team led by OC was deputed to the interior area. “Since the area where the incident took place was in interior area and near the border, we are waiting for full details”, SP said. Court directs NPF rivals to maintain status quo Correspondent
KOHIMA, SEP 11 (NPN): In a major development involving the factionalism within the NPF which has seen a wedge between the legislature led by chief minister, T.R. Zeliang and the party led by Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü and the formation of a parallel NPF under Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio, a single judge bench of the Gauhati high Court, Kohima Bench has ordered that status quo be maintained by both sides- NPF under Dr. Shürhozelie (petitioner) and NPF under Neiphiu Rio (respondent). After hearing counsels of both sides, the learned judge ruled in favour of the petitioner who had sought for passing an interim order, pending the appeal to restrain the opposite (respondent) from using the party flag, symbol, letter head and also from holding the general convention which is scheduled for September 20, 2017. On the objection from the counsel of the opposite party against the interim order, the learned judge, said the root cause of the dispute needed to be adjudicated on the basis of the constitution of the party and since the opposite party claimed it had submitted the genuine constitution to the ECI, he ordered that the opposite party file its affidavit with documents relied upon them within 15 days. Further the learned judge also reminded the leaders of both sides who are “among the tallest political leaders in the state” were aware of the expectation of the people and therefore, asked them to abide by the constitution of the
NPF party and also restrain their respective supporters from “disturbing the peace and tranquillity of the state.” Reactions: Meanwhile, NPF Central through its Media & Press Bureau said it should abide by the Constitution of the party while describing high court order as a vindication of its stand that it is a duly registered party with the Election Commission of India, which functions according to the provisos of its Constitution and not by the whims and fancies of any individual or group of legislators. The M&PB stated that as per the Constitution of the NPF, two-thirds of the CEC can write to the president to call for an emergent general convention of the party. However, it said the “imposters do not muster the required number, nor have anyone written to the president of the party, Dr. Shürhozelie to convene a General Convention”. Therefore, NPF central said the September 20 so-called General Convention was illegal and unconstitutional and expressed hope that “these towering political leaders behind the charade come to their senses and stop fooling the people with their grandiose hopes and wishes”. Neiphiu Rio led NPF press secretary, Shilu Mar informed Nagaland Post that they welcomed the judgment and described it as a “balanced judgment” and claimed that it was in their favour. When asked to elaborate on what was meant by “balanced judgement” he did not elucidate further but only said that the matter was in the court and that they respected the court order.
NTC’s PIL on parl secys, 105 lawmakers under probe Cooperate with govt: CM urges road builders advisors referred to GHC for manifold rise in wealth Correspondent
KOHIMA, SEP 11 (NPN): The Gauhati High Court (GHC) Kohima bench on Monday referred the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC), against removal of “unconstitutional” posts of parliamentary secretaries and advisors, to the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court. It may be recalled that the PIL, which was filed on August 30 against appointment of “nine unconstitutional advisors and 26 parliamentary secretaries”, was heard on August 31, 2017. The court then posted the matter to September 11, 2017 for further order and hearing. Talking to this Correspondent after the court hearing, NTC press and information secretary, Theja Therieh informed that since the matter concerns inter-
pretation of the Constitution of India, the single bench judge, justice L.S. Jamir referred the matter to the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Ajit Singh. NTC had filed the PIL following the expiry of the sevenday deadline served on the Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya to remove the “unconstitutional above posts in the light of the July 26, 2017 landmark Supreme Court judgment against appointment of parliamentary secretaries in Assam. The Supreme Court had ruled that states had no power to enact any law for appointment of parliamentary secretary and deemed “The Government of Assam had made the appointments through enactment of the Assam Parliamentary Secretaries (Appointment, Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004” as unconstitutional.

DIMAPUR, SEP 11 (NPN): The indefinite “total bandh” called by Dimapur District Autorickshaw Drivers Union (DDADU), which began Monday in protest against the autorickshaw fare revision by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Dimapur, has been lifted after reaching an agreement with the district administration. which also restricted carrying patients and students, left thousands of commuters and students stranded even as district administration made alternative arrangements like buses and taxis for the conveniences of public. Around 10 NST buses and 20 taxis of All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) Dimapur unit provided services between Dimapur and Chumukedima. Although the public welcomed the arrangements
made, the commuters had to go through difficulties in availing the services. School students, who generally rely on autorickshaw for daily commute, were the most affected. told Nagaland Post that despite having limited vehicles the association extended help bearing in mind the trouble school students and patients could undergo. ANTA unit president also assured to extend support to the public should such crisis arose in the future. The association president maintained that DDADU’s demand was reasonable considering rise in commodity and petrol prices, which had escalated over the months. Meanwhile, hundreds of autorickshaw drivers created a scene outside railway station after they reportedly discovered some unauthorized private vehicles ferrying passengers around Dimapur charging exorbitant rates. Auto drivers also expressed outrage at the district administration for taking their demands lightly while remaining silent on those private vehicles.

Bodos impose bandh over statehood demand Guwahati, Sep 11 (Agencies): Bodo groups demanding the creation of a separate Bodoland state by carving parts of Assam imposed a 12-hour shutdown at several places on Monday. This the second part of their agitation, which resumed on August 28 with a 10-hour blockade of national highways, urging BJP-led governments at the Centre and the state to hold tripartite talks to solve the three-decade long issue. Though Bodo groups exempted educational institutions from the purview of such strikes in the past, this time they have imposed a ‘total bandh’ with an aim to put pressure for early talks. “Only emergency services and examinations have been allowed to continue. Business establishments, offices, and banks are closed,” said Lawrence Islary, general secretary of All Bodo Students Union. The strike, which began at 5am, has affected normal
life in the four districts comprising Bodoland Territorial Council. Bodo groups are unhappy that despite assurances by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the 2014 general elections to address their demand for a separate state, nothing has happened in the past three years. The demand for a separate state in areas of lower Assam where indigenous Bodo people, the state’s biggest tribal group, are
mostly concentrated has been continuing since the late 1980s. But it was put on hold in 2014 after the BJP’s promise. Over three dozen Bodo organisations under the banner of Peoples Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement (PJACBM) have decided to intensify their stir if talks aren’t held soon. Monday’s programme will be followed by a mass hunger strike on October 1 and a blockade of trains later in the month.

Schoolboy murder: SC issues notice to Centre, CBSE, CBI New Delhi, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): “This concerns the safety of all children across the country,” Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra observed on Monday while referring to the murder of a seven-year-old boy in a Gurugram school a few days back. The boy’s father moved the Supreme Court on an urgent basis seeking a CBI investigation into the murder. He was seen standing quietly at the back of the courtroom in the visitors’ gallery. His petition, filed by advocate Kamlesh Mishra, said the court should intervene and frame guidelines to make schools accountable for children’s safety. The school administration should be held liable if an
incident or an accident occurred to a child within its premises. Reports said the Ryan International first informed the parents, saying boy died after a fall. The body was found in a bathroom with fatal injuries, allegedly done by a knife. The Bench, also comprising Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud, issued notice to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Haryana government, the Haryana DGP, the CBI and CBSE. They have to respond in three weeks. “We will not restrict this hearing to just one school. The hearing and the decision will have countrywide repercussions,” Chief Justice Misra observed.

New Delhi, Sep 11 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea by Sahara Group urging it to lift attachment of its Aamby Vally project and permit it to enter into agreement with Royal Partners Investment Fund for selling it 26 per cent stakes in it for $1.6 billion. Seeking the lifting of attachment and halt to the court ordered auction of Aamby Valley, Sahara told the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice A.K.Sikri that it has already sold its two hotels in New York. However, the court said that if Sahara group was able to fructify deal with the Royal Partners Investment Fund and deposit the amount with the court, then it would pass appropriate orders to that effect. On April 16, the top court had asked the Bombay High Court’s official liquidator to evaluate and auction the Aamby Valley property of the Sahara Group. In his report on its worth, the liquidator had said that its market value is Rs 37, 390 crore and the fair value is Rs 43,000 crore. Senior counsel Kapil Sibal, appearing for Sahara, said that in lieu of $1.6 billion, the de Royal Partners Investment Fund would get 26 per cent stake in Aamby Valley. Khammam, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): A woman gave birth to a boy on a bench at the Mother and Child Healthcare Centre (M&CHC) on the District Headquar ters Hospital premises here. But the newborn died minutes after delivery following a ‘fatal fall’ from his mother’s lap on Saturday night. However, officials contended that the woman gave birth to a stillborn baby in the labour room. In a separate incident, a baby died at the same State-run centre late on Saturday night due to “breech delivery with obstructed labour.” The death of two babies in quick succession at the recently opened stateof-the-art M&CHC sparked protest by activists of vari-
ous women’s organisations. The women’s organisations demanded a detailed inquiry into the alleged lapses on the part of the “errant staff.” The protesters owing allegiance to the POW and other organisations alleged that the death of two infants in less than 12 hours at the M&CHC exposed the “hollow” claims of the government on provision of modern maternal and neonatal services. N. Nagamani, 27, of Pallegudem of Khammam rural mandal was brought to the M&CHC on Saturday evening by her husband Rajaiah after she developed labour pain. The staff reportedly admitted her into the centre, but asked her to wait outside citing “shortage of beds.” When she began

India is considered a strong player in the services trade globally due to its large pool of services professionals including in the I.T sector. New Delhi, Sep 11 (AGENCIES): Trade experts have cautioned that India’s push to ease norms - under bilateral, regional and multi-lateral trade agreements - on movement of skilled workers across borders for short-term work, could turn out to be counterproductive if they don’t protect workers’ rights, including employment oppor-
tunities, adequate earnings, equal opportunity as well as stability and security of work. India has been pitching for liberalisation of the services trade including relaxing norms for temporary movement of professionals and skilled workers in the ongoing negotiations on the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) involving 16
Asia-Pacific nations (including India) as well as at the World Trade Organisation (WTO)-level trade negotiations. India is considered a strong player in the services trade globally due to its large pool of services professionals including in the Information Technology sector. The proposed FTA involving 16 Asia-Pacific nations is officially called
the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). At the WTO-level, India has proposed a Trade Facilitation in Services (TFS) Agreement with an aim to eliminate “barriers” affecting global services trade - through binding commitments on measures including simplification of procedures for temporary entry and stay of workers, and by ensuring clarity regarding work permits and visas. However, trade experts and civil society organisations have cautioned the Centre against the move, saying it can prove to be detrimental if such bilateral, regional and multi-lateral trade pacts do not incorporate elements mentioned in the International Labour Organisation’s ‘Decent Work Agenda’ - that includes employment opportunities, adequate earnings and productive work; decent working time, stability and security of work, equal opportunity, social security, as well as employers’ and workers’ representation. Satyaki Roy, Asso-
ciate Professor, Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID), said trade negotiations need to address labour issues to ensure protection of workers’ rights. Roy said, “Developed nations protect their main resources - capital and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) - by pitching for binding commitments on protection of investments and IPR in trade pacts. Similarly, the developing nations, including India, must ensure protection of their chief resource, which is abundant labour.” Ashim Roy from the New Trade Union Initiative mentioned the model of ‘tied employment’, where some multinational companies (MNCs) take their workers to the countries where they have operations, but ensure that such employees work only for them, and that too without adequate pay. “While India is pushing for easing norms on temporary movement of workers, they should not result in helping the ‘tied employment’ model and workers losing their rights,” he said.
Nirmala Sitharaman upgraded from special invitees to full-time members of the CCEA. Goyal, who now leads the Railway and Coal Ministries, has also been inducted into the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs along with Sitharaman. The Cabinet Committee on Security led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been expanded to include Sitharaman. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj as well as
Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley continue as members of the committee. Among the newly-inducted ministers, former bureaucrat Hardeep Singh Puri is the only one to have made the cut as a special invitee to the Cabinet Committee on Accommodation. Puri is the Minister of State with independent charge of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. One other notable change in the freshly constituted Cabinet Committees notified on Monday, is the inclusion of Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot in the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs. SS Ahluwalia and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who were earlier ministers of State for parliamentary affairs, have been substituted by their replacements in the ministry – Vijay Goel and Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Supreme Court to hear plea for ban on Blue Whale game
New Delhi, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a petition for an immediate judicial direction to the government to ban an online game ‘Blue Whale’, which may be behind the deaths or attempted suicides of teenagers and young adults hooked to it. A Bench led by Chief Justice of India heard an urgent mention made by advocate C.R. Jaya Sukin, representing another lawyer N.S. Ponnaiah, who urged that the government should take immediate steps to spread awareness about the dangers of playing the game and clampdown its availability online. Sukin argued before the Bench that
to experience pain, her husband pleaded with the staff to shift her to a bed and provide prompt medical care, but allegedly to no avail. According to sources, Nagamani went into labour and delivered a baby-boy on a steel bench where she had spent a harrowing time waiting for her turn to get into the labour room. Adding to her woes, the newborn died a few minutes later after he accidentally fell off from her lap while she was resting on the bench, sources close to Nagamani’s family said. When contacted, the District Headquarters Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Madan Singh, told The Hindu that Nagamani was admitted to the M&CHC on Saturday evening.
the government, till now, has not taken sufficient steps even as the numbers of cases of self-inflicted injuries and suicides increase. The petition said the game has spread its tentacles across the cities and enticing even schoolchildren to play. The game “goads young people into killing themselves. Blue whale on-line game encourage people to take part in increasingly dangerous harmful dares that culminate in instructions to kill themselves,” the petition said. The petitioner stated that parents are in panic. “Parents are doing their best to prevent their children from playing the game,” the petition said.

Lo n d o n, S E P 1 1 (AGENCIES): The UN high commissioner for human rights on Monday described the situation of Myanmar‘s Rohingya minority as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing” and criticised both Yangon and New Delhi, the latter for seeking to deport Rohingyas who fled to India. Delivering the opening statement at the 36th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the high commissioner for human rights, asked the Myanmar government to stop claiming the Rohingyas were setting fire to their own homes and laying waste to their villages. Al Hussein came d own he av ily o n the Myanmar government, stating that its denial on the Rohingya issue was doing great damage to the international standing of a government which had until recently, he said, benefited from immense goodwill. “Because Myanmar has refused access to human rights investigators the current situation cannot yet be fully assessed, but the situation seems a textbook example of ethnic cleansing,” he said. “I call on the government to end its current cruel military operation, with accountability for all violations that have occurred and to reverse the pattern of severe and
Ltd, the court in order said: “However, if the applicant enters into any negotiations and Royal Partners Investment Fund deposits the amount before this Court, appropriate order shall be passed on the next date of hearing.” The court also directed Subrata Roy to present in the court on next date of hearing. The court rejected Sahara’s plea even though Sibal told the court that since last hearing of the matter, the group has deposited about Rs 530 crore and sought time till November 11 to pay the balance of Rs 966 crore. Urging the court to consider their plea for 60 days time to deposit Rs 966 crore for which Sahara had given the advance cheques, Sibal said that of Rs 24,000 crore that Sahara had to deposit in SEBI—Sahara Refund Account, they have already deposited Rs 16,000 crore. He said in last one year, Sahara has deposited Rs 4,000 crore. He told the bench to contrast this with those who after taking 40—80,000 crore from the bank were seeking their restructuring. The court, in the last hearing of the matter on July 25, had directed Sahara group to deposit Rs 1500 crore by September 11. The two Sahara companies had raised Rs 24,000 crore through optionally fully convertible debentures in 2007—2008 and the top court by its August 31, 2012, order had directed Sahara to refund this amount with 15 per cent interest.
New Delhi, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): In a stepup for Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who was elevated in the recent Cabinet restructuring process, the government has not only included her in the high-profile Cabinet Committee on Security, but also made her a full-time member of the Cabinet Committees on Economic and Political Affairs. Sitharaman, who previously held independent charge of the ministry of commerce and industry with a Minister of State rank, was only a special invitee to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs or CCEA in that role. Raw deal for Dimapur
W
hile other airports in the north east are getting more flights and fair share of discounted fares offered by various airlines, Dimapur airport is flying towards the opposite direction with only two flights and that too, operating almost at the same time. Looking at the situation from a broad perspective, it looks like Dimapur airport would eventually land in a no man’s land where the unfortunate passengers in all their ultra modern outlook and attire, would be soon flying to Guwahati in a small plane and board wide bodied jets in order to fly to their destinations. Dimapur airport, among the few oldest in the region came on the country’s aviation map after the Indian Airlines introduced the Fokker-27 between Calcutta-Guwahati-Dimapur and back during the mid-70s. During that period only Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Imphal had flights along with Dimapur. Jorhat and Tezpur were military airports and occasionally handled civil aircrafts. Dimapur airport has the capacity to handle around 500 passengers daily. Presently it handles around 150 to 200 passengers daily through two flights by IndiGo (daily) and Air India (6 days a week) and well below its capacity. Even these two flights are scheduled in such a way that both operate only 30 minutes of each other. It would have been better for the passengers if the flights operated at least two hours of each other. Instead of promoting growth of Dimapur airport it appears that despite the huge potential and growing number of fliers, the aviation ministry is hardly bothered since Nagaland government including its MPs had probably not done enough to take stock of the situation. Other airports in the region are developing and even Aizawl airport continues to hold on despite not being a popular destination like Dimapur (in terms of serving as Nagaland’s commercial gateway and also nearby Assam). This is because the Mizo politicians and government have been on their toes to ensure that no regional airport authority sidelines their state which depends a lot on the air link .In the case of Nagaland, Dimapur airport has been given a raw deal despite being a very important airport with huge potential. Due to the past instances where flights used to be reduced from daily to four times a week and even three times a week, at the whims and fancies of the aviation ministry. Even after reducing flights those operating were also not dependable as the airlines (Indian/Air India) frequently delay or postpone flights. Such instances had compelled passengers from Dimapur to travel to Guwahati to fly to their respective destinations. Due to such a situation, the volume of passengers dropped but rose during holiday seasons. Despite all these, the volume of passengers did not reduce to a trickle and for business compulsions, IndiGo took the bold step of introducing a daily flight from Dimapur to Delhi. However the flight has changed with a break at Kolkata. At one time, there was loud talk of making Dimapur an international airport but that honour has been given to Imphal where its previous chief minister Ibobi, despite his type of politics managed to keep development going in the face of constant bombs, bandhs and hartals. Dimapur deserves at least two regular flights with one from Delhi to Guwahati to Dimapur and back, at least thrice a week. However the lobbies are pushing for an airport near Kohima and another one at Razaphema and for which Dimapur has been sidelined again.
DailyDevotion Missionary Weapons (2) If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. —John 13:14 Ministering in Everyday Opportunities. Ministering in everyday opportunities that surround us does not mean that we select our own surroundings— it means being God’s very special choice to be available for use in any of the seemingly random surroundings which He has engineered for us. The very character we exhibit in our present surroundings is an indication of what we will be like in other surroundings. The things Jesus did were the most menial of everyday tasks, and this is an indication that it takes all of God’s power in me to accomplish even the most common tasks in His way. Can I use a towel as He did? Towels, dishes, sandals, and all the other ordinary things in our lives reveal what we are made of more quickly than anything else. It takes God Almighty Incarnate in us to do the most menial duty as it ought to be done. Jesus said, “I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you” (John 13:15). Notice the kind of people that God brings around you, and you will be humiliated once you realize that this is actually His way of revealing to you the kind of person you have been to Him. Now He says we should exhibit to those around us exactly what He has exhibited to us. Do you find yourself responding by saying, “Oh, I will do all that once I’m out on the mission field”? Talking in this way is like trying to produce the weapons of war while in the trenches of the battlefield— you will be killed while trying to do it. We have to go the “second mile” with God (see Matthew 5:41). Yet some of us become worn out in the first ten steps. Then we say, “Well, I’ll just wait until I get closer to the next big crisis in my life.” But if we do not steadily minister in everyday opportunities, we will do nothing when the crisis comes.
Quotes It is unjust, but only Christlike, to suffer persecution for doing what is right.” ~ Joyce Rachelle

ven though humans have kept dogs and cats as pets for thousands of years, there are still so many things about them, that we believe, that are simply not true. And because of these beliefs, many of these animals are ill-treated and suffer. Here are some misconceptions. A cat purrs when it is happy: Purring is generally the first sound kittens make by the time they are 48 hours old. While nursing, both mom and kittens can be heard to purr. But while purring is often heard at times of contentment, cats also purr when in pain and in the throes of death. Stray cats are loners: Feral cats are not solitary, they usually live as a group near a food source. Cats are nocturnal creatures: Cats are most active at dusk and dawn, when mice and other small prey come out and hunting is easier. The construction of their eyes allows them to see well in low light. Cats only need 1/6 of the light humans do in order to decipher shapes. However, they cannot see in absolute darkness. Cats hate water: While most cats hate baths, many find running water fascinating and paw at dripping taps. It is possible to give
a cat a bath without being scratched and mauled. Cats can be fed an all fish diet: An all fish diet is bad for cats because high levels of magnesium and oil can increase Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease and other diseases. If nature wanted cats to just eat fish, it would have made them swim. This mythology was spread by the British because, as a cat crazy island, it was importing meat for them and it was easier to get fish. Cats have 9 lives: This probably goes back to ancient Egypt, where 9 was a mystical number. The god AtumKa had 9 lives and took the form of a feline whenever he visited the underworld, so the 9 lives became associated with the cats. C a t s a lway s l a n d safely on their feet: Cats are naturally flexible and have the ability to right their bodies while falling. But that doesn’t necessarily protect them from harm. Cats break their front legs and jaw when they land on their feet. Cats need milk in their diet: Although many cats do like milk, it is not necessary in their diet. In fact, many kittens get diarrhoea after drinking milk. Pregnant women must

Some misconceptions give up their cats: While toxoplasmosis is a risk for foetuses, a woman is more likely to catch it from handling raw meat, or digging in the garden, than from her cats. Dogs with warm, dry noses are sick: A dry nose has nothing to do with a dog’s health. Normal canine body temperature ranges from 101 to 103 degrees A dog may still have a cold, wet nose while running a temperature of 105 degrees. Feel the inside of the ears. Old dogs can’t learn new tricks: Old dogs and old people continue to learn throughout their lives. I have found old dogs pick up orders in a new house quicker than puppies. Very old dogs may not learn well because they may be impaired by progressive blindness or deafness. A dog wagging his tail will not bite: The wag of a dog’s tail tells nothing about his aggressiveness. It
simply is a sign of excitement. Other aspects of his behaviour can tell more about aggressiveness, such as ear position, whether the dog is staring, growling, or barking. If a dog scoots (drags his anus) across the floor, he has worms: Although dogs with tapeworms will scoot due to the itchiness of the worm segments, not all scooting dogs have worms. Allergies, diarrhoea, or stuffed anal glands, can cause this behaviour. If your dog eats his faeces, he has worms: Many dogs eat faeces, theirs or another’s. It is not necessarily a sign of intestinal parasites. Many mother dogs will do this to clean her newborn puppies and some pets will do it as an attention getting behaviour. The problem may also be poor nutrition and a learned habit. Female dogs should have at least 1 litter of puppies before spaying: There
is no benefit to allowing a pet to reproduce. In fact, there is evidence that spaying a female before her first heat may reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. Some dogs have jaws that lock: All dogs have the same facial muscles and structure -- none has locking jaws. All dogs can be taught to be gentle -- to release on command. Dogs eat grass because they are sick: Many dogs will eat grass and then vomit, but this does not mean that they are sick. It is normal for dogs to eat grass in very small amounts -- their ancestors ate grass. It’s roughage. You need to add more greens to their food. Dogs can be spiteful if left alone at home: Dogs can become stressed when left alone and may seek comfort by finding a scent of you in your favourite chair or shoes, and may express their stress by chewing or urinating. Dogs require annual revaccinations: It is now known that certain vaccines, such as distemper and rabies, don’t need to be given yearly after initial doses and boosters. Neutering and spaying makes dogs fat and lazy: It has no effect. Eating too much and not enough
exercise makes animals overweight. Same goes for cats. Dogs and cats are colour-blind: Both dogs and cats can see in blue and green, and they also have more rods — the light-sensing cells in the eye — than humans do, so they can see better in low-light situations. Reds and pinks may appear more green to cats, while purple may look like another shade of blue. Dogs, meanwhile, have fewer cones — the colour-sensing cells in the eye — so scientists estimated that their colour vision is only about 1/7th as vibrant as ours. Pit bulls are vicious killer dogs: The pit bull is not born vicious, nor is it in its DNA. German shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, and Chows are the genetically aggressive dogs. Pit bulls are only aggressive when they’ve been trained to be that way. Dogs can detect cancer: Dogs are capable of detecting smells linked to cancer. In one study the dogs had an accuracy rate of 98 percent for sniffing out colorectal cancer in humans. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www. peopleforanimalsindia. org

The desecrated human rights of the Nagas Nagaland state; The face of all Nagas
H
uman right can be called as ‘right which is believed to belong to every person.’ It is inalienable and fundamental. The atrocities and tragedies of Second World War pushed the United Nations General Assembly to adopt ‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ in Paris (1948). Human rights cannot be bought or sold. It is inherent and inborn. How a person nurtures it in his life is a matter of choice. All the same, the country/state can protect the rights of its citizens by implementing positive laws and regulations. There is a missing link between Nagas and Human right. Nagas are also human beings, yet the so called ‘rights’ are too far away from the reach of the Nagas. It hangs just above the head, but it is like biting chocolates tied on a string. The higher you jump, the higher the string goes. Are Nagas aware of their rights? Did the State of Nagaland ever deny rights to the Nagas? Or any factions disturb/curtail the rights of the Nagas? How far has Nagas understood each other well as brothers and sisters of the same soil? These few interrogations may lead us to grasp the meaning of human rights in the context of Nagaland. The fate of Nagas swings up and down with enhanced right or denied right. The sad tidings that distort Nagas beyond recognition are its continuous internal conflict. The wounded marks that still exist can be well understood as the stigmata of the Nagas by Nagas. The techniques of wounding each other inside our own hometown has become daily affairs. Down through the history; from the cruel treatment of the Indian Armies till the present day pain caused by different factions, the story of Nagas are that of teardrops on the sand. It falls only to disappear without being noticed by the world. The pain of Nagas are caused by its own people. The Nagas tear each other into pieces and giggle at its deformation. Sad to say, but true to proclaim. Nagas may go to the United Nation to express its unhappiness with regard to AFSPA or with denial of right by the central government, overground or underground factions. They may even give the best appearance in the search for their rights and privileges. Yet, what happens every day is never re-told to people outside in detail. There is fear in us to recount the bloody events. In Nagaland, to dig out some truth would mean digging your own grave. (You have no right to speak or stand for truth, your only right is to keep silent and die a happy death. Heaven belongs to such people). For many decades the Nagas suffered under the cruel hands of the Indian Armies. The Nagas were treated like non-living beings.
Many men and women were tortured for fun. Churches were burnt, fields destroyed, houses gutted, women raped, and men slaughtered like beasts in front of the wife and children. The Nagas went through this purgatory stage with closed mouth. They suffered without complain so that their posterity may see the rising sun in one’s own land. The Indians regarded themselves as more human than the fair skin Nagas. The common villagers shivered at the sight of the Indian armies. The fear of meeting the Indian armies remained till the year 2000 or so. The darker the skin, the more cruel they seem to be. This is how the Indian armies appeared in Naga soil. And living under such terror is no freedom or right. With the dawn of 21st century, new outlook emerged. The stressed on the motto, “Friends of the Hill people” became more evident and they tried to live likewise. The Indian armies try their best to make themselves available to Nagas in whatever ways and means possible. Today, the works of charity and other selfless service are in one way to diminish the past horror events committed by their predecessors. With the entry of many Naga youth into the Indian troops, there came about a cordial relationship. To protect the rights of the Nagas, the Mother Nagaland gave birth to NNC at the right time. Yet, the numerous differences among its members brought many divisions. Their difference made them equal opponents. The war within took its heights when one life was revenged with ten lives. Instead of protecting the rights of the Nagas, they begin to kill each other in the name of ‘my right.’ Indeed, they have curtailed the many rights of the people. From taxation to taxi stand, fear to threats, red blood letters to bullets, the national workers have killed many Nagas like the Indian Armies of the past. The one born to protect has become a murderer! If we count the number of Nagas killed in factional clashes, it would be equal to the number of stars in the sky. The number of innocent public whose lives were cut short by the bullets of the national workers will be equivalent to the sand on the sea shore. This is how we treat each other in Nagaland. In Nagaland, all are right, no one is wrong. Yes, this right is ‘the greatest wrong’. Self-acclaimed rights and laws are becoming more important than the basic rights. This is why ‘Rights’ are alien to many of us. How many Nagas really live in freedom? Few. The rest of the Nagas live in fear and insecurity; fear of another Nagas, fear of losing one’s life, sense of insecurity in one’s homes and offices, etc. A man once commented, “muri bole mon nai to, etu nimite upai nai.”
We have come to a situation where even the birds and ants that carry their food to their nest need to pay some share to the factions. Which animal would happily reside in Nagaland? Which Saviour will redeem Nagas from the clutches of this self- inflicted suffering? Do the national workers protect the rights of the Nagas or try to kill even the tiniest rights that belong to the Nagas? I still wonder. My wonder will be your wonder as well. As we continue to wonder together, there are wonderful tragedies happening in Nagaland. I am sure that Nagas can feed national workers (factions) with the best homemade bread if they are true to their call. If the national workers truly protect the rights of the Nagas, I believe there will be metanoia. Change of attitude towards each other will grow and trust will be deepened and widened. But the present scenario shows that Nagas are forced to feed them from the sweat of the brow. Nagas are giving birth to numerous virus and groups. The virus has become so invisible and dark. They appear at night as ‘night super’ and roam about the day with the latest stolen vehicles. That is why many Nagas are turning against them. Most of their works are not accepted by the Nagas. They have failed to give Nagas the right to live as Nagas. The atrocities committed by them are beyond recall. The rights of the Nagas are cut to the ground. I pray that true national workers come to the fore front of Nagas to brighten the darkness of life. Nagas have seen more shadows than the reality. It is the shadow who create havoc in the society. In addition to this, there are many self-styled criminals under the guise of some factions. Such people must be silenced before they become dragons. The intellectuals of every factions need to come together to weave the best clothes for Nagas. The Nagas are tired and wearied with the shabby old stingy clothes stained with blood and tears. If we do not reconcile with each other, we will be the cause of our own downfall. Allow good sense to prevail over emotional imbalance. Let not emotions overtake our common sense. Encourage individuals to protect and respect their own rights as well as others for the larger interest of Nagaland. We must allow Nagas to grow in freedom of thought and speech. If we fail in this aspect, we will appear like punctured football in front of other states/ country. May God bless those who work for peace and justice in Nagaland. Respect each other’s rights. By this, you will be right in your ‘Right.’ Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Kohima, (tisislawkhing@gmail.com)
T
he rest of Indian people may not know that Nagas are geographically divided into Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland State. In all these areas, Nagas are a minority except in Nagaland state where it is 100% Nagas. The 16th Point agreement between the Govt of India and the Nagas created the Nagaland State. When the state of Nagaland was created, there was 20% job reservation for the Nagas living outside the state of Nagaland. This indicates that Nagaland State was the mother of all Nagas and maybe to look after the welfare of all the Nagas till the Naga Political solution was resolved. Having the above as a premise, I feel very uncomfortable for the development of a new concept called “Nagaland Nagas”. Yes, everyone knows that Nagas are there in Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and they are called as Manipur Nagas, Arunachal Nagas, and Assam Nagas and obviously Nagaland Nagas will be called as Nagaland Nagas. But those days, Nagaland Nagas do not say I am a Nagaland Naga to indicate that they are a separate Naga. They introduce themselves as NAGALAND. And in the heart of heart we the Nagas from outside Nagaland state are very proud of Nagaland State because this state represents the Nagas and speaks to India and the rest of the world that there is a race called NAGA in India. Otherwise Nagas may be a lost people or a wondering race. The rest of the Nagas living in Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh cannot speak for Nagas because they are a minority in those states. Their voices are crushed by the majority. Some political leaders in Manipur say that there are no Nagas in Manipur. And the Manipur Nagas cannot fight against such statement other than agitations and bandhs expressing their anger and frustration. Recently there was a newspaper report that Arunachal Nagas hardly gets Rs. 20 cr per year for their developmen-
tal purposes. And as per information, Arunachal Nagas are one of the poorest people in Arunachal Pradesh. I presume Assam Nagas will still be worse. Hence the anger, frustration, the emotions of these Nagas being divided into these states as minority people are all angry with the government of India for their divide and rule policy. They have the potential to vent out their frustration but they are suppressed till date thinking that one day the Naga political solution will unite all under one State or Nation and then only they will enjoy the fullness of a Naga. The Nagas of Nagaland state may not enjoy the fullness of a Naga but they are very fortunate to enjoy the statehood with 100% Nagas and Nagas alone. Other Nagas look up to Nagaland Nagas because they are the face of all the Nagas. So my contention is when other Nagas are suffering in these states, why there is a development of a new thinking called “Nagaland Nagas”. Will there be any benefit for Nagaland Nagas by this thinking? If there will be any benefit then maybe the opportunity must be seized. But I do not see that rather I see there will be deeper divide among the Nagas for no benefit or reward whatsoever to anybody. In all my more than 35 years of living in Nagaland State I have never seen the elders from Nagaland State speaking in the tone of Nagaland Nagas. They were very magnanimous, accommodative and seem to understand the sufferings of the people because of the political nature of the Nagas. I think the other Nagas also did not take undue advantage of these elders by way of employment in state government jobs, contracts etc. So far, they did not even question as to why that 20% job reservation was cancelled in 1972. Hence I look up to the Nagaland Nagas to be bold, farsighted and represent the whole Nagas till the Naga Political solution is logically concluded. Dili Solomon, River Belt Colony, Dimapur

Hundreds of Muslim women rally in support of triple talaq
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board says it would be a mistake to assume that a majority of Muslim women support the ban on triple talaq.
B H O PA L , S E P 1 1 (AGENCIES): Hundreds of women gathered under the aegis of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) to protest against any move aimed at diluting the Sharia law, which provides for the banned triple-talaq practice, at Iqbal Maidan in Bhopal on Monday. This move came a day after the Islamic organisation decided on constituting a panel to look into the Supreme Court verdict against the controversial practice. Several AIMPLB office-bearers, including general secretary Syed Mohd Wali Rahmani and women’s wing leaders Asma Zehra and Sufia Hasnaini, addressed the

gathering. The speakers announced that they would seek the signatures of about three crore Muslim women on a memorandum against the Supreme Court judgment, which would then be sent to the Chief Justice of India. They termed triple talaq as a “right” that should not be taken away from them simply because some “uneducated women” had moved the apex court against it. The AIMPLB, established in 1973, is one of the leading Islamic organisations in the country. It is opposed to any interference either from the court or the government as far as the Sharia is concerned. The board is a party to the
petition on triple talaq, which was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court on August 22. Though the board’s working committee proclaimed its respect for the Supreme Court at a meeting in Bhopal on Sunday, it decried any attempt at interfering with the Sharia law. It then decided to form a committee to check if the judgment was in contravention with the same. The Muslim leaders maintained a similar tone on Monday. Attacking the NDA government at the Centre, AIMPLB executive committee member Asma Zehra wondered why the central government was trying to interfere only with the law governing Muslims when “women face atrocities and domestic violence in all religions”. “We feel empowered due to Sharia, and triple talaq is the best way to get rid of a husband if he harasses his wife,” said Dr Sufiya Hasnaini, convenor of the AIMPLB state women’s wing. “We can ourselves bring about any required change by educating people on triple talaq, but we will not allow anybody to change our law.”
Board member KR Sajjad Naumani agreed, stating that it would be wrong to perceive that a majority of Muslim women are against triple talaq. While AIMPLB general secretary Syed Mohammad Wali Rahmani conceded that triple talaq can be misused, he insisted that it is also effective under certain circumstances. “Any dilution in the Sharia will lead to women being abandoned,” Rahmani said. However, Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan activist Shaista Ali said the Supreme Court judgment would go a long way in resolving the problems faced by Muslim women. “It’s in favour of Muslim women who have long been suffering due to the malpractice of pronouncing the triple talaq in one sitting. The AIMPB’s opposition to the judgment is not surprising, but they have no option but to accept it.” Though hundreds of women participated in the convention, they were not allowed to share their views with the press. The organisers even announced over the public address system that they should not interact with the media.
Indian Christians Need to revisit Indian object Australian ads roots: Venkaiah Naidu
MUMBAI, SEP 11 (IANS): The Catholic Secular Forum (CSF) on Monday raised strong objections to a new Australian advertising campaign featuring revered Hindu and Christians gods and other mythical figures to ‘sell’ its red meat and meat products. CSF FounderGeneral Secretary Joseph Dias said the latest advertising campaign by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) is “bad in taste and offensive to all” and sought boycott of MLA and a ban of their products. The advertisements feature the elephant-headed God, Lord Ganesha, revered
in India, Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Thor, Zeus and others seated at a table enjoying what is a sumptuous nonvegetarian feast. The ads have reportedly made an oblique reference to Prophet Mohammed, who is not pictured but is heard excusing himself from the party through a mobile phone call since he has to pick-up a child from daycare. What has hurt Christians is that the caricature of Jesus Christ who performs what is termed as a ‘reverse miracle’ by turning wine into water so a Grecian goddess, who is a ‘designated driver’ can drive home safely, Dias said.
Gov, CM and MP condole demise of Shyama Singh
(From p-1) Rio said that late Shyama Singh hailed from a renowned family of bureaucrats and was subsequently elected to the Lok Sabha from Aurangabad Parliamentary Constituency in Bihar in 1999. She was renowned not only as a politician but also as an outstanding social worker. She had a pleasant personality, intelligent and well-versed with a variety of issues faced by the people of the country, Rio said. In her demise, the people of this nation have lost a great stateswoman, and the people of Nagaland would fondly cherish the memories of her stay in the State, he added. Will be with Kashmiris on Article 35A, says Rajnath Singh
Rajnath Singh, along with J-K deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh (left) and Union minister of state in the PMO Jitendra Singh, at a press conference in Srinagar on Monday.
Srinagar, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): Union home minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday the BJP-led government at the
Centre will not go against the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir on constitutional provisions that guarantee special privi-
leges to the restive state, amid a debate over articles 35A and 370. Singh is on a four-day visit to the state which comes at a time when the valley is experiencing agitation against attempts to abrogate Article 35A of the Constitution, which gives special rights to the permanent residents of the state, and the arrest of seven separatist leaders by the NIA in alleged terrorfunding cases. “The government did not initiate anything on this or go to court. I assure the government would never take any step which
will hurt the sentiments of people of Jammu and Kashmir,’’ he said. Singh called it a “nonissue’’ and said it was being raised by people who have nothing “else to talk about’’. He said “his assurances have come as a home minister of India’’ after he was asked about the individuals or organisations challenging these constitutional provisions were affiliated to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP’s ideological mentor. “I don’t want to comment on who is saying
what but I am talking as a leader of the BJP and home minister of India,’’ he added. The Supreme Court last month asked the Centre to file a reply within three weeks to a writ petition filed by an NGO seeking that Article 35A be struck down. The PIL said the state government, under the guise of Article 35A and Article 370, which grants special autonomous status to the state, has been discriminating against nonresidents who are debarred from buying properties, getting a government job
or voting in the local elections. The top court is likely to hear the arguments in the case after Diwali. Singh’s comments generated instant debate in the valley as netizens reacted to his statement. Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah said the “assurances should be carried forward’’. “The Union government must now file a counter affidavit in the Supreme Court to defend 35-A. That is the way to carry this assurance forward,’’ Abdullah tweeted.

New Delhi, SEP 11 (AGENCIES): Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said Indians need to go back to their roots for living in harmony with each other. Pointing out that most people knew India through the perspective of foreign writers, Naidu said the young generation should be fully acquainted with Indian culture, its history and ethos. However, he said, culture and religion were two different things. “When we talk of culture, we are not talking of religion. Culture is a way of living while religion is a way of worship,” the Vice President said after releasing a documentary film on the ‘Kumbh Mela’. could have acted couple of months in advance to ease liquidity situation. “We were operating from a system of liquidity deficit, which is how RBI always operated, but it was wasn’t working well in that environment. So having recognised that probably a little later than we should have recognised, we moved it to a neutral liquidity position. So, that’s the place I think I could see that happen a couple of months earlier,” he said. There was a tight liquidity situation in the banking system in the second half of 2015-16 and it was addressed at the April 2016 policy. As a result, banks were delaying easing of monetary policy transmission to the customers. At one point, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy accused him of being “mentally not fully Indian” and that his inflation centric monetary policy stifled growth.

New Delhi, Sep 11 (IANS): The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) on Monday announced that the upper age limit for joining the National Pension Scheme (NPS) had been raised to 65 years, from the current 60. Chairman PFRDA Hemant Contractor made the announcement here at a conference on “Transferring Superannuation Funds to National Pension System”, saying the pension regulator’s board had already approved the change and it would be notified shortly. “NPS is currently open for people between 18 and 60, and our Board has approved raising the age limit for joining to 65,” Contractor said. “The scheme anyway has the option of continuing and making contributions up to the age of 70,” he added. Explaining that the rationale behind government reforms in pensions is to facilitate “portability”, or the transfer of superannuation funds by making the NPS more attractive and customer-friendly. “The aim is to open up pensions to sectors that are without pensions,” he said, noting that only 15-16 per cent of employees in India are covered by pensions because an overwhelming 85 per cent of the workforce is found in the unorganised, or “informal”, sector. Elaborating on the benefits of the NPS, Contractor said it is the “lowestcost pension product in the world today”.

consumer satisfaction over call drops and an additional 8 per cent improvement target has been set for telcos to be achieved by December. Sinha said the Telecom Commission would soon take a decision on improving sectoral health after considering recommendations of the inter-ministerial group. “The inter-ministerial group has submitted its report and there were earlier discussions with telecom service providers too. IMG recommendations will be considered by Telecom Commission and a decision taken,” the minister said. The highest decisionmaking body in the telecom department last week sought more clarity on IMG suggestion to allow telcos to pay spectrum charges over a 16-year period instead of 10 years at present. The minister rejected a proposal to allot frequencies in the 700 MHz band, which is ideal for 4G services, to state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam, saying, “As per policy, we can’t give spectrum to BSNL administratively.” BSNL had sought a block of 5 MHz of the 700 MHz band.

Analysts and the industry estimate high-speed data services with cross-industry IoT applications and AIdriven services, could open up close to 20% of additional revenue opportunity. “Service providers have upgraded network and there is a substantial improvement in call drops and service quality,” Sinha said, adding that the government expects operators to continue to upgrade infrastructure to ensure better quality. In June, Sinha met top executives of India’s telcos who had prepared an action plan for 100 days and a full year, collectively committing to deploy 60,000 base transceiver stations and spend Rs 12,000 crore. Operators, according to the telecom department, have met the goal and have added 3.49 lakh base stations with the optimisation of 4.08 lakh mobile towers in a year. NEW DELHI, Sep 11 (Agencies): The New Telecom Policy, expected by March 2018, will focus on providing affordable internet access to 1.3 billion Indians and facilitate domestic manufacturing to curb dependence on imports. Telecom minister Manoj Sinha told ET the call drop situation has improved and competition will ensure quality services at affordable rates. “Internet to all will be the basic principle and to give a boost to telecom manufacturing would be a key factor of the new telecom policy,” Sinha said. EL-ARISH (Egypt), Sep 11 (Agencies): Militants ambushed a police convoy in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on Monday, killing 18 police and wounding seven others, according to security and military officials, in one of the deadliest attacks this year in the turbulent region. The police and military officials said the attack began with roadside bombs that destroyed and set ablaze four armored vehicles and a fifth one carrying signal jamming equipment. The gunmen later opened fire with machine guns and commandeered a police pickup truck. Among those killed were two police lieutenants. The wounded included a police brigadier general. The attack took place about 30 kilometers (nearly 19 miles) west of el-Arish in northern Sinai, the epicenter of a long-running insurgency now led by the extremist Islamic State group. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media. Monday’s attack was the deadliest against security forces since July, when Islamic State militants attacked a remote army outpost in the border town of Rafah, killing 23 soldiers. That was the deadliest attacks in two years.
In March, the military said militants killed 10 soldiers during an army raid in Sinai’s central region. Egypt has battled militants in Sinai for years, but the insurgency became far more deadly after the 2013 military ouster of Mohammed Morsi, an elected Islamist president. In recent years there has also been a wave of attacks, mainly targeting security forces, blamed on a splinter faction of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood group. Monday’s attack came a day after authorities said they had busted a militant cell planning attacks in Cairo. Police said they killed 10 militants in two simultaneous raids on apartments in a densely populated Cairo neighborhood. They said the militants sneaked into the capital from northern Sinai.

the previous record set by Hurricane Dora in 1964. A flash-flood warning is in effect for the city this morning as water is expected to flow in from the St. Johns River.
As of this morning, 125 rescues have been made from floodwaters in Orange County, Florida, officials said. In Lakeland, Florida, police officers rescued a family with two young children who were stranded in a car that was submerged in about 4 feet of water in a ditch. “In the car, they found two adults and two small children, ages 6 months and 10 months old,” the police said. “The water had reached the kids’ car seats. Thankfully, all were not injured and officers were able to safely get them out of the car.” Irma first made landfall in the Florida Keys Sunday morning as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing 130 mph winds and a storm surge of
10 feet. It was the first Category 4 landfall in Florida since 2004. The Keys were under mandatory evacuation orders as Irma neared, but not everyone left. According to the Miami Herald, Florida Director of Emergency Management Bryan Koon estimates that about 10,000 people remained in the Keys during the storm, adding it is hard to communicate with those left there. In an interview with ABC News, Roman Gastesi, the administrator of Monroe County, which includes the Keys, said, “Unfortunately, you start to hear stories of folks that stayed in houses that shouldn’t. ... We’re hearing of folks that stayed in boats.”

in Bangladesh from Myanmar’s Rakhine state since August 25, around a third of the total population of 1.1 million. The true figure could be even higher - the UN said many new arrivals are still on the move and are therefore left out of the calculations. Dhaka initially stepped up border controls after the violence, stranding thousands of refugees at the Bangladeshi frontier, but in the last week has been allowing them to enter. Refugee camps and makeshift settlements near the border with Myanmar, which already hosted hundreds of thousands of Rohingya before the latest upsurge in violence, are now completely overwhelmed. That has left tens of thousands of new arrivals with nowhere to shelter from the monsoon rains. Most have walked for days and the United Nations says many are sick, exhausted and in desperate need of shelter, food and water.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel peace laureate, has come in for strong international criticism over the military crackdown on the Rohingya, which began when militants ambushed security forces on August 25. The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar has said the latest violence may have left more than 1,000 dead, most of them Rohingya. A further 27,000 ethnic Rakhine Buddhists as well as Hindus have also fled violence that has gripped northern Rakhine, where international aid programmes in Rakhine have been severely curtailed. Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh), Sep 11 (Agencies): The situation in Myanmar is a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”, the United Nations said today, as the number of Rohingya Muslims fleeing Myanmar for Bangladesh topped 300,000. The Rohingya, a stateless Muslim minority, have faced decades of persecution in Myanmar where they are regarded as illegal immigrants. But since the latest upsurge in violence on August 25, hundreds of thousands have flooded across the border into Bangladesh bringing stories of entire villages burned to the ground by Buddhist mobs and Myanmar troops. Today the UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein accused Myanmar of waging a “systematic attack” on the Rohingya and warned that “ethnic cleansing” seemed to be under way. “Because Myanmar has refused access to human rights investigators the cur-

Trump, a native New Yorker who was in the city on 9/11, said the attack was worse than the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor during World War II because it targeted civilians. He vowed that it would never be repeated. “The terrorists who
attacked us thought they could incite fear and weaken our spirit,” Trump said later at the Pentagon, where he was joined by Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “But America cannot be intimidated and those who try will join a long list of vanquished enemies who dared test our mettle.” He said that when America is united, “no force on earth can break us apart.” Trump also offered words of comfort the many whose loved ones perished in the attacks. “For the families with us on this anniversary, we know that not a single day goes by when you don’t think about the loved one stolen from your life. Today, our entire nation grieves with you,” Trump said. Later, he said “the living, breathing soul of America wept with grief for every life taken on that day.”
TOKYO, Sep 11 (Agencies): North Korea said on Monday it will make the United States pay a heavy price if a proposal Washington is backing to impose the toughest sanctions ever on Pyongyang is approved by the UN Security Council this week. The North’s foreign ministry issued a statement early Monday saying it is watching the United States’ moves closely and threatened it is “ready and willing” to respond with measures of its own. The United States has called for a vote Monday, New York time, on new UN sanctions against North Korea. Last Tuesday, the US circulated a draft resolution proposing the toughest-ever UN sanctions on North Korea, including a ban on all oil and natural gas exports to the country and a freeze on all foreign financial assets of the government and its leader, Kim Jong Un.

Tom Alter fighting stage four skin cancer in Mumbai

eteran theatre and film personality Tom Alter, 67, is battling stage four skin cancer at a Mumbai hospital, his son said on Monday. Upset over “factually incorrect” stories about his father suffering stage four bone cancer, Jamie told IANS over phone: “It is what is called a squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer). It is a relapse of the same thing which had happened last year and unfortunately, for various reasons, it was not detected at that time and has come back.” Last year, Tom Alter had to get his thumb amputated due to the condition. Now, he is in stage four, Jamie said. Tom Alter has been admitted for a week in K

Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital. “He is fighting it well. He is showing the will to battle it out,” Jamie said, adding: “He is under the best care possible. Various doctors across the country are in consultation. As a family, we are very happy with the treatment he is getting. “His bodily functions are absolutely fine. The doctors are very happy with that. The past one week has gone in getting him in a state of physical strength, whereby the doc-
tor is able to start the next round of medication.” Jamie said the family wants privacy in the matter. “We will be releasing statements to the media as and when things happen.” Known for starring in television shows like “Bharat Ek Khoj”, “Zabaan Sambhalke” and “Betaal Pachisi”, Tom Alter is an American-origin actor settled in India. He has had a flourishing career on stage, and on the big screen he has played pivotal roles in successful films like “Gandhi”, “Shatranj Ke Khilari”, “Kranti”, “Aashiqui” and “Parinda”. In 2008, he was recognised with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour of India.
ne of the lead stars of The Big Bang Theory has spoken out about the possible end of the sitcom in a new interview. Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj on the show, has said that, though he cannot confirm that the twelfth season will be the last, there are fewer episodes to come than have already been broadcast. Season 11 of The Big Bang Theory is set to begin later this month, with a 12th season also confirmed. “I’m not saying it’s the end after season 12, but we know that this incredible, special thing is going to come to an end, and sooner rather than later,” Nayyar told Digital Spy. “I think all of us [in the cast] are at least beginning to feel a little bit nostalgic about the time we’ve had.” “I mean, no-one wants
to see an old, fat Raj,” he added. “I don’t know if season 12’s going to be the last season – those decisions are not up to me – but I do know for a fact that we have less [episodes to come] than we’ve already had.” Last year, Nayyar hinted that the tenth season would be the last. However, the confirmation of a further two seasons ended the rumour. “Why would everyone walk away from something that’s so good? No-one would. Not the studio, not the actors, not anyone. We’d all be foolish. But it is the industry and unless pen is on paper and you’re signed, sealed, delivered, anything can happen. There was never real doubt in my mind, but things can happen.” Season 11 of The Big Bang Theory will debut on September 25 2018.

A
ngami Catholic Yo u t h A s s o c i a tion (SFS Kohima town) observed a day of tradition ‘Tsazho Nyi’ on September 9 at Angami Public Organisation Hall with Khriehu Liezietsu, ex MLA as the chief guest. Khriehu Liezietsu in his speech urged everyone to preserve the age old ethics and culture. He cited that with advancement tak-
ing place at a rapid rate we have very much overlooked our traditions today and therefore it is a reminder to everyone that we should be deeply rooted in our good traditional values as it serves as our distinct identity. He also lauded the association for keeping a day aside to relive ‘our’ tradition. Traditional elderly blessings, folklores, demon-
stration of attires, folksongs from the men folk, women folk and youth folk were sung in the programme. Senior catechist Vilasalie James pronounced the final prayer and concluded the programme. The programme was chaired by Visazhünuo and Kevichütuo. Invitees, patrons and well wishers of the association attended the programme.
‘550 mn Indians live with NH7 Weekender Express uncorrected refractive errors’ to travel to seven cities
W
ith a staggering 550 million Indians -- close to half the population -- living with uncorrected refractive errors, the major cause of road accidents, and 63 percent of the world’s population in need of vision correction, two major stakeholders have come together to address the issue in this country and globally. “Poor vision plays a critical role in safe driving, but we know that much of that could be avoided. According to an analysis by Boston Consulting Group, 23 per cent of drivers have uncorrected vision, but in India that number is 46 per cent -- the highest of any country in the world,” Jayanth Bhuvaraghan, Chief Mission Officer of French lensmaker Essilor International, told IANS during a visit here of the three-year partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The “Action for Road Safety” partnership aims to create awareness on this global health issue and highlight the importance of regular eye checks for safe driving. The call to “Check Your Vision” will be commonly promoted towards local authorities, institutions, NGOs, eye care & medical professionals, driving schools and road users, among others, he added. The figures for India are horrifying with some 138,000 people being killed in road accidents each year. Last week, Minister for
Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari released the annual publication, ‘Road Accidents in India - 2016’, which revealed that fatalities resulting from these accidents have risen by about 3.2 per cent. According to the Home Ministry, there was a 17.6 per cent increase in road accident deaths from 2008 to 2012, and 50 per cent of those who died were aged between 15 and 34. “ S o m e t h i n g mu s t be changed,” exclaimed Kristan Gross, Global Executive Director of the Vision Impact Institute, which is funded by the Essilor Social Impact Fund. Speaking about the initiative in India, Bhuvaraghan noted that access to optometric eye care is limited, as there are approximately seven doctors of optometry per 1 million people across India, well below the world average of 25/1M. “But there is one other key barrier to corrected vision that we must still address: Acceptance. In India, stigmas exist around spectacle wear for all ages, but it is a tremendous issue for those in the professional driving industry. “We have heard from many in this industry that wearing spectacles can be seen as a weakness or a visible defect. Therefore, many drivers are not wearing the correction they need, even when it is prescribed. Drivers were fearful of not being
hired if they are thought to be defective,” he added. To this end, The Vision Impact Institute is working to break down these stigmas through education, utilising the personal testimonies of other drivers for which vision correction and eye protection have been a benefit rather than a drawback, Gross explained. A Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) interim report on ‘Assessment of Visual Limitations of Commercial Drivers in Metropolitan Cities in India’ focusses on commercial drivers in Delhi. The study was in association with the Vision Impact Institute. The sample size of the survey was 627 drivers and the study was conducted during August 8-14, 2017. Seventy per cent of those surveyed were light motor vehicle drivers, 24 per cent were heavy motor vehicle drivers, four per cent were private bus drivers while one per cent were government bus drivers. According to the preliminary findings: * One in every three drivers had either marginal or poor Far Visual Acuity (distance vision) * Half the drivers surveyed had either marginal or poor Near Visual Acuity (near vision) * Overall 29 per cent drivers, mostly among the older age group, with marginal and unacceptable stereopsis (depth perception) problems were more likely to be involved in accidents

Chris Froome completes historic Tour-Vuelta double
Britain’s Chris Froome pedals on his way to win the Spanish Vuelta cycling race in Madrid.
M A D R I D, S e p 1 1 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : C h r i s Froome became just the third rider in history to win the Vuelta a Espana and Tour de France in the same year as Matteo Trentin won the 21st stage of the Vuelta through the centre of Madrid on Sunday. Froome beat fourtime Grand Tour winner Vincenzo Nibali by 2min 15sec, with Russia’s Ilnur Zakarin completing the podium.
“Thank you so much to everyone who’s been a part of this journey,” Froome said to the crowds gathered around the Cibeles fountain in the heart of Madrid. “It’s been a whirlwind past three months and so many people have contributed.” The Briton joins Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil (1963) and Bernard Hinault (1978) as the only riders to win the Tour and
Vuelta in the same year. But Froome is the first man to win both races since the Vuelta was moved to after the Tour in the racing calendar in 1995. Froome, a four-time winner of the Tour de France, had previously finished runner-up at the Vuelta on three occasions in 2011, 2014 and 2016. The Sky rider led the race all the way from stage three to Madrid thanks to wins on stage nine and the individual time trial on stage 16. Trentin claimed his fourth stage win of the race on the sprint to the finish line after a 117.6km ride from Arroyomolinos to Madrid, ending in a nine-lap circuit through the centre of the Spanish capital. His victory was QuickStep’s sixth of the race with Yves Lampaert and Julian Alaphilippe also successful. However, the Italian was denied the green jersey as winner of the points competition by an insatiable Froome, who sprinted to maintain his lead by finishing 11th on the stage. There was also an emotional send-off for Alberto Contador on his final day as a professional cyclist. The three-time Vuelta winner signed off in style with victory on the steep mountain climb to Alto de l’Angliru on Saturday and was given the honour of leading the peloton around the first lap of the Madrid circuit.

Cricket to benefit from sport’s development in Pak: ICC Dubai, Sep 11 (IANS): International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Shashank Manohar on Monday welcomed the return of international cricket to Pakistan ahead of the Independence Cup taking place in Lahore this week. The Inter national Cricket Council (ICC) World XI will play three day and night Twenty20 matches with reigning Champions Trophy winners Pakistan at Lahore’s Gaddafi stadium on September 12, 13 and 15. International teams have refused to tour Pakistan since the 2008 terror-
ist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in 2008. Pakistan later hosted Zimbabwe in October 2015. “This is a good day for world cricket as the PCB hosts a World XI in Lahore for three T20 International games. It has been a long and tough journey as the PCB, Pakistan players and fans have been starved of the opportunity to stage, play and watch international cricket in their own country,” Manohar said. “I am hopeful that today marks the start of the safe and steady return of international cricket to Pakistan.” Manohar said the boost to Pakistan’s

cricket is a big factor for international cricket. “The ability of Pakistan to play international cricket at home is crucial to the long term health of the game in Pakistan and one of the main reasons why the ICC established the Pakistan Task Force under the leadership of Giles Clarke, to explore, in partnership with the PCB, how we can get interna-
tional cricket back to Pakistan safely and on a regular basis,” Manohar said. “I send both teams and the PCB the very best wishes from the whole cricket family for a competitive series that the passionate fans in Pakistan can enjoy. I sincerely hope that this week’s games mark the start of a steady flow of international cricket to this great cricket nation.”

Crystal Palace sack BAI to confer first Lifetime Nadal wins third US Open title manager Frank de Boer Achievement award on Padukone “He’s one of the toughest competitors in the game and one of the greatest ambassadors of our sport,” he added.
Hingis, Chan capture women’s doubles crown
Rafael Nadal of Spain holds the trophy after winning the US Open title in New York.
New York, Sep 11 (IANS): Spain’s Rafael Nadal defeated Kevin Anderson from South Africa 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to win his third US Open title on Sunday. The victory gave the world number one the 16th Grand Slam title. Only his longtime rival Roger Federer has more, with 19. Besides his triumph in New York, Nadal also won the French Open in June and has collected two major titles in the same year for the first time since 2013, when he won the last of his two US Open crowns. Federer won the season’s other two Slam trophies at the Australian Open, beating Nadal in the final, and Wimbledon, illustrating the two Grand Slam greats’ enduring power. World number 32 Anderson was the lowestranked US Open men’s finalist since the ATP rankings began 44 years ago. He had never before been past the quarterfinals at
any major tournament in 33 tries. The final was a lopsided one where Nadal was never really tested by his opponent. He converted four of his nine breaking points while Anderson never had breaking chances. Anderson powered 10 aces compared to one from Nadal, but he made 40 unforced errors to just 11 from Nadal. Nadal said: “It’s unbelievable what happened this year. After a couple of years with a lot of trouble and pain, I’ve been playing a very high level in the sport.” “To close the Grand Slam year winning at New York feels good, that’s one of the events that’s really full of high energy. The US Open feels a little bit like home,” said Nadal, who has yet to lose to Anderson, now standing 5-0 in the series. Anderson, 31, gave all thumbs up to Nadal, saying “I know we’re the same age but I feel like I’ve been watching you my whole life”.
Switzerland’s Martina Hingis and Taiwan’s Chan Yung-Jan won the US Open women’s doubles title on Sunday when they rolled past the Czech partnership of Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2. It was the first Grand Slam title for Chan but the second in as many days for Hingis, who won the mixed doubles with Britain’s Jamie Murray on Saturday. The victory took Hingis’s career Grand Slam tally to 25, including five singles titles, 13 doubles and seven mixed doubles. “Two in two days; I was Michael Jordan’s number 23 when I started here and now 25 sounds even sweeter,” said Hingis, who played the US Open singles final on the same Arthur Ashe Stadium court 20 years ago, beating Venus Williams. “It was an amazing feeling to play here in the singles final against Venus Williams,” Hingis said. “We were two teenagers making the finals playing here for the first time at Ashe Stadium and coming back 20 years later it is a wonderful journey.” Hingis and Chan stormed through the draw without dropping a set and in the final did not face a breakpoint as they simply overwhelmed Hradecka and Siniakova. Fittingly it was Hingis who sealed victory with a thundering forehand down the line.
Frank de Boer
LO N D O N, S e p 1 1 (Agencies): Crystal Palace on Monday sacked manager Frank de Boer after a dismal start to the Premier League season in which they have lost all four of their matches without scoring a single goal.

A new manager will be appointed in due course and we wish Frank the very best of luck for the future.” The south London club have been strongly linked with a move to appoint former England boss Roy Hodgson to replace the departing Dutch manager.
