Oxford vaccine trails put on hold UK volunteer suffers adverse reaction to vax LONDON/NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (PTI): The human trials of one of the most promising COVID-19 vaccine candidates, being developed by the University of Oxford, has been put on hold after a UK participant had an adverse reaction to it. AstraZeneca, the biopharmaceutical giant in tie-up with the university to produce the vaccine, described the pause as a “routine” one following what was “an unexplained illness”. The trials had moved into Phase III after successful Phase I and II testing had raised worldwide hopes of it being ready by early next year as results showed that it produced a positive immune response. The vaccine moved to Phase III testing in recent weeks, involving around 30,000 participants in the US as well as in the UK, Brazil and South Africa. “As part of the ongoing randomised, controlled global trials of the Oxford coronavirus vaccine, our

standard review process was triggered and we voluntarily paused vaccination to allow a review of safety data by an independent committee,” said a spokesperson for AstraZeneca on Tuesday evening. “This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials. In large trials illnesses will happen by chance but must be independently reviewed to check this carefully,” the spokesperson said. Stressing that the adverse reaction involved only a single patient, the spokesperson added that the team is working to expedite the review of the “single event” to minimise any potential

impact on the trial timeline. “We are committed to the safety of our participants and the highest standards of conduct in our trials,” the spokesperson said.

DGCI issues showcause notice to SII

Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI), Dr V G Somani, has issued a show-cause notice to the Serum Institute of India (SII) for not informing it about pharma giant AstraZeneca pausing the clinical trials of the Oxford vaccine candidate for COVID-19 in other countries and also for not submitting casualty analysis of the “reported serious adverse events”. DCGI, in his showcause notice, has asked SII

as to why the permission granted for conducting phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of the vaccine candidate in the country be not suspended till patient safety is established. “Whereas, Serum Institute of India Pvt Ltd, Pune, till now has not informed the central licensing authority regarding pausing the clinical trial carried out by AstraZeneca in other countries and also not submitted casualty analysis of the reported serious adverse event with the investigational vaccine for the continuation of phase 2 and 3 clinical trials of the subject vaccine in the country in light of the safety concerns,” said the show-cause notice accessed by PTI. DGCI sought an immediate reply, saying else “it shall be construed that you have no explanation to offer and action deemed fit will be taken against you”. Regarding the show cause notice, SII said in a statement, “We are going by DCGI’s direction and so far were not told to pause the trials. If DCGI has any safety concerns, we will follow their instructions and abide by the standard protocol.”

Chakhesang Students’ Union objects to ANCSU’s probe demand DIMAPUR: Objecting to the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU)’s demand for setting up of enquiry commission to probe into the fund utilisation under AICTE-NEQIP scheme at Kheloshe Polytechnic Atoizu (KPA), the Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has said that the demand was “devoid of merit and rationality” as the scheme implemented from 2014-2017 was duly audited by Accountant General of Nagaland and found satisfactory. In a representation addressed to the state chief secretary, CSU president Vetho Vadeo and general secretary Avezo Kevin Kapu said that the same scheme was implemented by two institutes in the state. CSU alleged that ANCSU has selectively chosen to target KPA with an ulterior motive. CSU also alleged ANSCU’s demand was with “vested interest to

cover up the ongoing controversy of a junior officer given the officiating charge of HOD in technical education”. The union stated that every norm and procedure of the Government Service Rules was flouted in handing/taking over the charge of HoD, technical education to Er. Lhoungu, OSD on the afternoon of August 31, 2020 on post retirement of Er Arjun Singh as the director. It stated that Er Vipulhou was occupying a non sanction post of OSD and was placed in the third place in the seniority list of officers published by the department of technical education. CSU said that Er. Razou Vizo, additional director, was the senior most officer in the department. It said he was suffering from brain tumour since 2003 and had undergone rigorous medical treatment. As such, CSU said he was not able to dis-

charge his duties for the last 15-16 years. However, CSU said Er. Mhaseto Nakro, principal KPA, was second in the list of seniority list of officers followed by Er. Lhoungu. CSU alleged that the state government, however, handed over the officiating charge HOD to Er. Vipulhou Lhoungu “much against the existing seniority lists of officers”, which it described as “unethical and illegitimate.” CSU alleged that technical education department has “scant regard for issuing officiating promotions based on principles of seniority for which there is rampant discrimination, corruption, manipulation, nepotism and favouritism”. Affir ming that it would not remain a silent spectator, CSU has urged the state chief secretary to issue necessary directive to the department “to correct the anomaly and restore the rule of law.”

A G A RT A L A , S E P 9 (IANS): In view of the worsening Covid-19 situation in Tripura, a two-member Central experts’ team would arrive in the northeastern state on a 10-day visit on Thursday to take stock of the situation and suggest measures to curb the spread of the virus, officials said on Wednesday. A senior official of the Health and Family Welfare Department said that two experts, Daisy Panna, Consultant Epidemiologist, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and P.K. Verma, Assistant Professor, Respiratory Medicine, Lady Hardinge Memorial College (LHMC), will visit the state for 10 days. “After visiting the districts, the Central team would hold meetings with the senior officials of the state. They would submit their report to the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry and the Tripura Health Department,” the official told IANS on condition of anonymity. Tripura’s Additional Chief Secretary in-charge of Health and Family Welfare Department, Sanjay Kumar Rakesh, has been appraising the Union Health Ministry about the prevailing situation in the state amid a sudden spike in the number of Covid-19 cases. Till Tuesday night,

Tripura reported 16,157 Covid-19 cases, of which 9,653 persons have recovered while 160 people have succumbed to the dreaded disease since June 9, when the first death was reported. Tripura’s mortality and recovery rates are 0.99 per cent and 59.83 per cent, respectively, worst among the eight northeastern states. “Considering the gravity of the situation, the Tripura government had earlier suggested imposing total lockdown in the state on September 5 and 6, but the Union Home Ministry did not respond on the issue,” Tripura Law and Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said. Of the total number of cases and fatalities, at least 85 deaths and 6,129 positive cases have been reported from West Tripura district alone, under which the capital city of Agartala falls. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who also holds the health portfolio, had earlier said that Covid-19 crisis in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas is extremely alarming. Around five lakh people reside in the AMC areas. Of the 49 wards in the AMC, 70 per cent Covid-19 cases have been found 10 ten wards. Deb, who is visiting

the districts to supervise the Covid-19 management, told the media that health infrastructures are being strengthened in all the 10 districts. A three-member Central team, led by G.K. Medhi, Professor and Head of the De par tment of Community Medicine at the Shillong-based North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), after studying the source and other aspects of the coronavirus infection in Tripura, has recently submitted its report to the state government. Meanwhile, former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has criticised the state government for its failure to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. “We have given many suggestions to the Chief Minister to strengthen the health infrastructures and improve the health services, but the state government is yet to implement many of our recommendations. “The state government should also announce financial schemes for the welfare of the poor people and those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic and the subsequent economic distress,” Sarkar, also a politburo member of the CPI-M, told the media.

Mnp CM launches campaign for by-elections Correspondent IMPHAL, SEP 9: Amid the coronavirus pandemic, campaign for bye-elections is gaining momentum in Manipur. Launching an election campaign of the ruling BJP in Thoubal district, state chief minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday claimed that the incumbent BJP-led coalition government was the best government ever installed in the state. The CM launched the campaign for BJP’s expectant candidate Paonam Brojen Singh at Khongjom. Hundreds of supporters and BJP workers took part in the campaign despite restriction of a gathering of more than 50 as laid down by COVID-19 guidelines in the state and even the ECI’s guideline restricting mass gathering during election campaigns. Singh said that in its three and a half years tenure of the coalition government, many schemes reaching out to the poor section of the society were implemented. These sections of people were neglected all these years by previous government, he alleged. The coalition has been working hard to bring all round development in the state, the chief minister said highlighting various achievements of his government in the last three and a half years. Among them, four members were disqualified by the Speaker while the remaining nine comprising three BJP MLAs and six Congress MLAs had resigned as members of the state Assembly. The Election Commission of India is yet to finalise the number of Assembly constituencies where bye-elections will be held as cases of some disqualified MLAs were

posed to be set up at Civil Hospital, Shillong. Meanwhile, War said that he would urge the State government to consider closure of all cement plants at Lumshnong, East Jaintia Hills, where several COVID-19 positive cases have been detected through random sampling. He said that no safety protocols were being maintained in these cement plants where many workers are gathering without minimum safety measures, including wearing masks. The medical official also pointed out that hundreds of trucks were entering and leaving these cement plants, including the Star Cement factory, thereby posing grave health hazard. On the other hand, War also urged the youth to be more responsible in their activities to ensure that they do not spread the virus among the vulnerable age groups. Till date, Meghalaya has detected 3197 COVID 19 cases out of which 1355 are active, 19 deceased and 1823 have recovered.

Itanagar, Sep 9 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Wednesday asked the Border Road Organization (BRO) to finalise the detailed project report (DPR) for two laning of the road from Chowkham Trijunction to holy pilgrim site of Parsuram Kund. Chowkham Tri-junction is in Namsai district and Parsuram Kund is in Lohit district. Mein while discussing steps on implementation of the strategic road with Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Commissioner (Planning) Prashant Lokhande, Deputy Commissioners of Lohit and Namsai, Demwe-based 48 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) commander through a video conference, asked both the DCs to conduct the land acquisition process smoothly. Mein also urged them to complete the land acquisition process as soon as the DPR is finalised and also

complete the floating of tender before the start of the working season so that the road project could be carried out in time, an official communiqu said here. The deputy chief minister said that fast development of road communication is taking place across the state and cited many road projects including, two-laning of road from Roing to Anini, Tohangam to Hayuliang, Manmao to Changlang, Hukanjuri to Khonsa, Potin to Pangin, across the state. “Surface road communications will greatly improve after these road projects are completed,” Mein said. The chief secretary informed that the Khadi

and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is ready for funding the establishment of incense stick (agarbatti) making industry in Namsai and Lohit districts and also assured buy back of the products. The chief secretary further asked the deputy commissioners of both the district to study the availability of required bamboo species and artisans. BRTF Commander Saurabh Srivastava informed that the land survey has been completed for the said portion of the road and the DPR would be made purely on the guidelines of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Among others Lohit DC Prince Dhawan, his Namsai counterpart R K Sharma, Secretary Land Management Hage Tarin and Director State Remote Sensing Application Centre, H K Dutta also attended the video conference, the communiqué added.

agreed on August 13, 2019 between the student bodies and state government was not translated into action till date. The bandh was called as per resolution adopted by a general assembly of the All Tribal Students Union Manipur held on September 7 last in Imphal’s Hmar community hall. The statement appealed to the interstate transpor ters and public to “kindly bear and cooperate” during the course of the proposed bandh.

Council joined the chorus to defer the bye-election. The party announced it will not field any candidate in the bye-elections if the ECI goes ahead with its schedule planned amid the COVID-19 crisis. The party alleged that the forthcoming by-election to the vacant Assembly seats were necessitated due to horse trading by BJP and not by natural factors such as the expiry of sitting MLAs. “It is an artificial one engineered by BJP which allegedly offered hefty amounts to some MLAs to resign from the membership of Manipur Legislative Assembly,” CPI veteran leader Dr Moirangthem Nara remarked. Pointing out that the death toll neared 40, CPI state secretary L Sotinkumar also decried the by-election terming it “ill-timed.”

Bipin Rawat favours reform of defence PSUs says some vintage military platforms can be exported

NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (PTI): Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat on Wednesday called for revamping India’s defence public sector undertakings and ordnance factories with a focus on improving their work culture and enhancing quality control. Gen Rawat also said that some of India’s vintage military platforms, with retrofits, can be exported to countries that lack the desired firepower to defend themselves. Addressing a seminar on defence exports, the Chief of Defence Staff also pitched for having a “hard look” at the distribution of India’s defence expenditure, saying a realistic analysis of the spending must be carried out for proper utilisation of resources. Gen Rawat said India must move out of constant “threat of sanctions” or dependence on individual nations for its military re-

quirements, in an apparent reference to difficulties involved in the procurement of equipment from countries facing sanctions. In October 2018, India had signed a USD fivebillion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems, notwithstanding a warning from the Trump administration that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions. The US had imposed sanctions on Russia under the stringent Countering America’s Adversar-

ies Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). The law also provides for punitive action against countries purchasing defence hardware from Russia. Gen Rawat said the stage is set for the domestic industry to embark on a trajectory of exponential growth, riding on pathbreaking reforms rolled out by the government to promote indigenous production of military assets. “We need to revamp our ordnance factories and other defence public sector undertakings in terms of modernisation, their work culture and quality control. “Corporatisation including the public listing of some units would be a way forward to ensure a more efficient interface with the designer end-user,” he said at the seminar organised by industry chamber FICCI. India’s DPSUs include aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

(HAL), Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) and Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (MIDHANI). The HAL, which produces a range of aircraft and helicopters, is the largest DPSU. Most of the DPSUs have been awarded the prestigious status of ‘Navratna’ or Mini Ratna because of their consistently high level of performance. He said the armed forces are committed to win India’s wars with indigenous solutions. Gen Rawat said some of India’s vintage military platforms can be exported. “Our current military fleet comprises of a fair share of vintage platforms which are under modernisation plans in the coming decades. These vintage plat-

forms, with some retrofits or perhaps as it is, could be exported to countries which lack desired firepower to defend themselves,” he said. “We may also consider sharing vintage platforms with domestic industry to assist them in developing cutting edge technology,” he said at the seminar. The Chief of Defence Staff urged the private industry to invest in building long-term capabilities for the application of decisive military power. In the last three years, he said, India witnessed a staggering 700 per cent growth in defence exports from Rs 1500 crore in 201617 to Rs 10,745 crore in 2018-19. “India is the third-largest defence spender in the world. It is time to have a hard look at the distribution of our defence expenditure. We must carry out a realistic analysis of our expenditures,” he added

Bengaluru, Sep 9 (PTI): HALs indigenously developed Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) demonstrated high altitude capability in hot and high weather conditions in the Himalayas for about 10 days. A comprehensive test plan was executed at Leh (3300 metres above mean sea level) in temperatures up to ISA (international standard atmosphere)+320C which included envelope expansion, performance and flying qualities, Bengaluru headquartered HAL ( Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) said. The LUH took off from Leh and demonstrated its hot and high hover performance

at Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO) Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) at 5000 MAMSL, an HAL statement said on Wednesday. The helicopter also demonstrated its payload capability in Siachen glacier high altitude. During the trials, pilots landed the helicopter at the highest helipads of Amar and Sonam, it said. “HAL has once again proved its indigenous capability in design & development”, the statement said. The Army version of LUH is now ready for Initial Operational Clearance, said HAL CMD, R Madhavan. Accoring to Director (Engineering and R&D), HAL, Arup Chatterjee, the

Lockdown not an attack on coronavirus, but on poor: Rahul

NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the lockdown was not an attack on coronavirus but on the poor people and proved to be a “death sentence” for the unorganised sector as it “finished” jobs and small businesses. Everyone should stand against the attack, he said. “The lockdown was not an attack on corona. The lockdown was an attack on the poor of India. It was an attack on the future of our youth,” Gandhi said in a video series on the lockdown triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. “The lockdown was an attack on labourers, farmers and small shopkeepers. It was an attack on our unorganised sector. We have to understand this. We all have to stand against this attack,” he said. “Whatever was done in the name of Corona was the third attack on the unorganised sector,” he also said. This is the fourth part of the video series launched by the former Congress president on the economy and the lockdown.

“The sudden lockdown proved to be a death sentence for the unorganized class. The promise was to finish corona in 21 days, but instead finished crores of jobs and small industries. Watch this video to know Modi Ji’s anti-people ‘disaster plan’,” he said in a tweet in Hindi along with the video that was shared on his social media platforms. The former Congress chief said the poor, working in small and medium businesses, are daily wage earners and eat with what they earn everyday. “When you announced a lockdown without a notice, you launched an attack on them,” he said. Gandhi said the prime minister said the fight will be for 21 days, but broke the backbone of the unorganized sector in 21 days. When it was time to open after the lockdown, the Congress party told the government several times that helping the poor is essential, he said, noting that a scheme like NYAY should have been implemented and money directly deposited in their bank accounts. “But they didn’t do it.”

performance of the helicopter and its systems is satisfactory fulfillingthe requirements of the users. All planned tests were successfully demonstrated. The flights were carried out recently by composite trial team which included pilots from HAL, Wg Cdr (Retd) Unni Pillai, CTP (RW), Wg Cdr (Retd) Anil Bhambani, Gp Capt (Retd) Pupinder Singh and Gp Capt V Panwar along with Gp Capt R Dubey, Sq Ldr Joshi from Indian Air Force and Lt Col R Grewal & Lt Col Pawan from theIndian Army. NE W D EL H I , S EP 9 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a plea which has raised the issue of cruelty on animals and sought to declare entire animal kingdom, including avian and aquatic species, as legal entities having a distinct persona with corresponding rights of a living person. While issuing notices to the Centre and others seeking their replies on the petition, which has also sought a direction to all the States and Union Territory (UTs) to take action if any case of cruelty on animals comes to light including on social media, the apex court said it is “very unlikely” that it would entertain the prayer for declaring them as legal entity. “We will issue notice but it is very unlikely that we will entertain the prayer for declaring them as legal entity,” a Bench headed by Chief Justice S Bobde orally said during the hearing. “Issue notice,” the Bench, also comprising Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, said in its order. Besides the Centre and some of its ministries, the plea has arrayed all the states, UTs, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and the Animal Welfare Board of India as

party. During the hearing, the bench asked the counsel appearing for the petitioner: “Do you mean animals can sue or be sued? That is the meaning of legal entity. Is your dog equal to you?” To this, the counsel said that animals can be considered as equal to humans. The lawyer said when legal status can be given to a temple then why cannot such status be given to animals. “Animals are vulnerable and if we will grant them this status then they can be protected,” said the lawyer, representing petitioner NGO ‘People’s Charioteer Organization’. The plea has said that NCRB should report and publish data and statistics relating to cruelty on animal and crimes against them in its annual report under separate head. It has sought directions to all the states and UTs to take appropriate steps for mandatory registration of FIR under relevant penal provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act, 1960, “whenever any incident of animal cruelty surfaces or comes to light on social media or otherwise”. It alleged the rights of animals exist only on paper due to their lack of implementation and enforcement.

PM to launch flagship fisheries scheme, app for farmers today NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will digitally launch the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) on Thursday and also inaugurate the e-Gopala App, a comprehensive breed improvement marketplace and information portal for direct use of farmers. In a statement on Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s Office said that Modi will also launch several other initiatives in the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors in Bihar, a state which is heading for the assembly polls in October-November. The PMMSY is a flagship scheme for focused and sustainable development of fisheries sector in the country with an estimated investment of Rs. 20,050 crore for its implementation during 2020-21 to 2024-25 as part of Aatmanirbhar Bharat package. The investment of Rs. 20,050 crore under PMMSY is the highest ever in the fish-

eries sector, the PMO said. The project in Bihar envisages investment of Rs 1,390 crore with the central share of Rs 535 crore and the additional fish production target pegged at three lakh tons. During the current fiscal, the Union government has sanctioned Bihar’s proposal costing Rs 107 crore. Modi will also announce the establishment of a fish brood bank at Sitamarhi and of aquatic disease referral laboratory at Kishanganj, for which assistance has been provided under the PMMSY. “These facilities will help in enhancing production and productivity of fish by ensuring timely availability of quality and affordable fish seed for the fish farmers and address the need for disease diagnosis as well as water and soil testing facilities,” the statement said. The e-Gopala app, it added, is a comprehensive breed improvement market-

place and information portal for direct use of farmers. At present no digital platform is available in the country for farmers managing livestock including buying and selling of disease free germplasm in all forms, availability of quality breeding services and guiding farmers for animal nutrition, treatment of animals using appropriate medicine. There is no mechanism to send alerts on due date for vaccination, pregnancy diagnosis and calving among other issues and inform farmers about various government schemes and campaigns in the area. The e-Gopala app will provide solutions to farmers on all these aspects, the PMO said. The prime minister will also inaugurate one-unit fish feed mill at Madhepura and two units of ‘Fish on Wheels’ assisted at Patna under ‘blue revolution’. He will also interact with the beneficiaries on the occasion.

Nobody’s child

t is indeed a proud moment for Nagaland, which after 56-long years as the 16th state of the union of India, has been allotted two medical colleges within a span of five years. It may be noted that Nagaland still has no medical college while all other north eastern states, barring Assam, which got statehood decades after Nagaland, have at least one medical college, while some of the states have more than two medical colleges. The present referral hospital( now CIHSR) could have been the first medical college if the project, which began in 1998 could have been completed by the mid-90s. The first medical college- Nagaland Medical College- was given the green signal by the Centre in 2013 and officially approved in 2014. The foundation stone was laid by chief minister Neiphiu Rio on March 3,2014. The estimated cost of the project was Rs.189 crore and in November 2019, the centre released its total share of the project of Rs.171.10 crore. The government of India has relaxed norms for setting up of medical college to make up the huge shortfall of medical doctors. As per the WHO guidelines, one doctor for 600 people is the ideal ratio. In India, there is one government allopathic doctor for every 11,528 people. As per the WHO guideline, India needs some 6 lakh doctors to close the huge gap in medical health services. The government of India has launched the scheme -“Upgradation of District Hospitals to Medical College ”- to produce more doctors. Under the scheme, the government of India had earlier approved the establishment of 58 new medical colleges in Phase 1 and 24 colleges in Phase 2. The relaxed norms has given Nagaland its first medical college when the Naga Hospital Kohima Authority(NHAK) erstwhile Naga Hospital Kohima, qualified to be upgraded into a medical college as it has a 200-bedded capacity. The Nagaland Medical College in Kohima is far from complete. As per official reports, in 2019, only 16.50% of the works were completed while around Rs.24 crore had been released. Mon also became a beneficiary under the scheme and among 75 hospitals for setting up new medical colleges, in order to meet the shortfall of medical doctors. As per reports the Mon district hospital has less than 50 beds and which is not exceptional. Even Dimapur district hospital, which is in the district with the highest population in the state, has around 100 beds. As per latest reports, the cost of the proposed hospital in Mon will be around Rs.300 crore. Taking into account all the requirements, Dimapur deserves to have a medical college on merit alone and not any other consideration. Under this scheme, the erstwhile referral hospital(now CIHSR) should have been made into a medical college. Construction of the 500-bedded referral hospital at Dimapur started during 1988 and if it was completed by early 90s, it could have become the state’s first medical college. The project was abandoned due cost escalations that saw the project soar from around Rs.30 crore to over Rs.100 crore. It is now functioning well as CIHSR and has a nursing college and a BSL -2 set up. Dimapur has many advantages that make it the most fitting to have such an institution. Stating this is not to belittle other districts but only highlighting facts and the step-motherly treatment meted out to the commercial capital of Nagaland.

…bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ… —2 Corinthians 10:5 Determinedly Discipline Other Things. This is another difficult aspect of the strenuous nature of sainthood. Paul said, according to the Moffatt translation of this verse, “…I take every project prisoner to make it obey Christ….” So much Christian work today has never been disciplined, but has simply come into being by impulse! In our Lord’s life every project was disciplined to the will of His Father. There was never the slightest tendency to follow the impulse of His own will as distinct from His Father’s will— “the Son can do nothing of Himself…” (John 5:19). Then compare this with what we do— we take “every thought” or project that comes to us by impulse and jump into action immediately, instead of imprisoning and disciplining ourselves to obey Christ. Practical work for Christians is greatly overemphasized today, and the saints who are “bringing every thought [and project] into captivity” are criticized and told that they are not determined, and that they lack zeal for God or zeal for the souls of others. But true determination and zeal are found in obeying God, not in the inclination to serve Him that arises from our own undisciplined human nature. It is inconceivable, but true nevertheless, that saints are not “bringing every thought [and project] into captivity,” but are simply doing work for God that has been instigated by their own human nature, and has not been made spiritual through determined discipline. We have a tendency to forget that a person is not only committed to Jesus Christ for salvation, but is also committed, responsible, and accountable to Jesus Christ’s view of God, the world, and of sin and the devil. This means that each person must recognize the responsibility to “be transformed by the renewing of [his] mind….” (Romans 12:2).

Post-mortem

Psychological fears of students during COVID-19 I heard several incredible stories from our students when I called them over the phone in different Towns and villages. I called the students to know about their conditions in their respective places during this covid-19 pandemic. A group of students responded that the pandemic worsened the pre-existing mental health conditions mainly due to college closures, changed of routine, irregular network for online classes and inadequate information. In such situations, psychological outcomes are evident to all the students which lead to frustration and boredom. Switching from traditional classroom to computer-based online class makes the learning experience entirely different and very challenging for students. Students Need Motivation: Motivation is one of the toughest tasks and biggest obstructions during this time of COVID-19 pandemic to achieve success in education. Sometimes learning is indeed a complicated challenge for most students therefore, it is very important to get motivation. If you do the toughest task first

pholding sovereignty is the chief goal of a nation. Hence, when the people and the land are under assault, defending them becomes the most challenging task of a nation. Nagas were never Indian nor Burmese. From the time the idea of nationstate dawned upon the Nagas, our forebears knew that resisting the might of the British Empire and that of India and Myanmar would be a colossal task. This challenge has demoralised many cowards, but our mothers also had birthed many sons and daughters who are of noble heart and who would be brave enough to fight for the nation. The imbroglio between India-Myanmar and Nagalim is not a contest of strength, but about upholding the latter’s political rights that are rooted in history. To defend one’s nation, one must understand the core principle on which one’s position is anchored. For us, the principal rea-

then it will ease a lot of your daily worries and enhance your self-confidence for the rest of the day. Also, start working slowly any task instead of jumping into something at full pace. Come out of your comfort zone and do not fear of failure, try to find the valuable lessons from each of your failures and learn from them. Students have access to a range of online resources, most of which are under- utilized. They can borrow from digital libraries, for borrowing eBooks to institutional access to research and journals. Students should take advantage of taking these tools. Manage your time properly; this is perhaps the most important skill to put into practice as you shift your learning modality to online classes. Pay attention to every minute of your day so your work gets completed on time. Its Alright to be not Highly Productive Right Now: In a competitive world of studies you may get discourage for not doing your best at your level. However, it is normal right now. son is the political rights bestowed on us by God the creator. Our worth and our covenant before God cannot be undermined. We need not inflate our strength nor trivialise our capabilities. We need not let our adversary cut us down to size with its malicious propaganda. Viewing the world through the prism of power alone, ruling out the question of right and wrong, eventually leads to the conclusion that the weak are born to be ruled by the strong and the poor by the rich. Such perspective will crumble in the face of truth and civilisation built on such scaffold will fall to pieces. In the str uggle for Naga’s freedom, the adversaries have thoroughly exploited our weaknesses to prolong their unworthy and illegal occupation of our land. Government of India (GoI) has impaired the moral authority of many educated Naga leaders,

day and let yourself have the rest of the day off. And do not beat yourself up for not getting through your entire to-do list. Set yourself minor goals to tackle as you move through the process of getting it done and do not forget to reward yourself once those goals are achieved. It’s okay to expect less from your work right now. Though this pandemic seems to continue endlessly this too will pass away. Embrace the Place Where You Are:Admittedly,it may not be conducive for online class at the moment but learn to relax, accept and embrace the place where you are.If things are not happening as you expected or if you are not seeing circmstances changing in your favour, open your grip on the situation; relax and learn to trust God. Believe that God has a greater plan for your life. If you overcome every obstacle, you can live that life of victory that God has store for you. Just embrace the place where you are and believe that God is in control, He is guiding you and directing you, (Joel Osteen).

making them ineffective and unproductive for the Nagas. In doing so, our adversary has used Nagas’ failing as their greatest scheme to divide and rule. India today acknowledges and recognises our right to self-determination. However, there is also a section within her that wants to backtrack her commitment using our own Naga people as an excuse. Indian agencies have sown the seed of division, hatred and greed among the already susceptible Naga nation. Someday, the world shall surely question the sincerity of the GoI for failing to execute various agreements signed between India and the Nagas. That day, India would respond to the world saying that it is the Nagas who have rejected for honourable political settlement and have accepted for something else. The failure to differentiate between a sovereign future with little extra efforts now and the lost future with frugal

Discover your inborn Potentiality: Every human being owns unique way of learning and understanding things around them which may be called as inborn learning Potential. Myles Munroe said “Death in its simplest form is the termination of potentials.” The Sky is your start. Many youths wander the streets while their potentials go down the drain. The most terrible suicide is not jumping down from a skyscraper, but dying with an inborn gift, (Word press). Other people’s opinions do not determine your potentials. What they said or what they think about you does not change what God has place on the inside. Do not allow negative words or attitudes to take root and keep you from pressing forward. Joel Osteen appropriately said; God would not have put the dream in your heart if He had not already given you everything you need to fulfil it. You have to realise that God has matched you with your world. God will never put a dream in your heart without first equipping you with everything you need to accomplish it. (Joel

present would be a blunder for the short-sighted Naga leaders. These leaders are those who choose the latter in the name of political expediency. However, such voices will continue to serve as bottleneck for prosperity and unity not only at the national level, but even at the village level with their narrow outlook. No matter how small Nagas are to India in terms of land and population, Nagas have rights to be free which is grounded in our historical location, and therefore our assertion that we are neither Burmese nor Indian have legitimacy. Since the time of the colonial British Empire till date, Nagas have never marched beyond the border to wage war; we have only defended our border from external aggression. Albeit, the peace talks linger for over two decades, if the adversary betrays us, Nagas will be on guard to defend our honour. To that end, it is vital that Nagas

Osteen, 2007). God command us not to fear: One of the most comforting words of God is “not to fear.” Isaiah 43:1 He who formed you, O Israel, Fear not for I have redeemed you, you are mine. Joshua 1:9, Be strong and courageous Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. It is difficult to maintain an unwavering stance of hopefulness when a person is confined to their home for an indefinite future and is likely to be unemployed upon being released. Taking online classes may feel overwhelming at times. If you find yourself struggling with focus and motivation, take some time to consider what is not working and set reasonable goals. Even the biggest project or responsibility can be successfully handled if broken down into small, achievable steps. Keep pushing through and remember that all of this hard work will be worth when you have finished your course. Dr. Meyingangla, Counselling Department, Immanuel College.

remain united and display maturity and responsibility for each other’s well-being. We need to be prudent in our comment in the media, including social media. Freedom of expression is a key feature of a free society. However, using this freedom to spread hatred between various political and tribal groups, within and without arbitrary administrative boundary, is not acceptable. Poisoning the young minds with unfounded fear and fiction is not only morally wrong, but politically destructive. NSCN has never divided the Naga society on the basis of ‘primary and secondary stakeholder’ of Naga cause. NSCN has been working all these years towards fostering unity among the family. It is in this spirit that NSCN continues to abide by the Covenant of Reconciliation signed twelve years ago under the aegis of Forum for Naga Reconciliation. We all have to admit that

some of the mistakes and wrong perpetrated to one another cannot be undone. It will be futile to continuously argue on the mistakes committed, intentionally or unintentionally, in the journey of freedom. History has sufficiently warned us about repetition of such errors. Today, I pray for wisdom for all the Nagas to collectively work to heal the badly wounded nation. We need to shed our personal differences and come together. Many of us have become too sensitive to how others hurt us while being not sensitive enough to how we hurt others. As sons and daughters of the soil, and as responsible heir to our legacy, let us keep building Naga nation as our national vision. Our common aspiration and vision for a Naga nation must outshine our petty differences and adversary’s policy to divide us. David Mero Kilo Kilonser, GPRN

China starts fresh build up at Finger area

NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (IANS): As India dominates south of Pangong Lake in Eastern Ladakh, China has started fresh build up at Finger area north of the Lake, sources said on Wednesday. It started soon after the skirmish on the southern bank took place on September 7 where warning shots were fired by both sides. The deployment of People’s Liberation Army troops have increased since

Tuesday evening. They are also bringing in more materials and logistics items. The troops from both sides are at a short range from each other. “They are within clear visible range and Indian troops are keeping a close watch on the activities,” said a government source. The Chinese continue to sit atop Finger 4 ridgeline. The north bank of the lake is divided into 8 fingers that

are contested by both sides. India claims that the Line of Actual Control at Finger 8 and had been holding on to area till Finger 4 but in a clear alteration of status quo the Chinese have been camping at Finger 4 and have set up fortifications between Finger 5 and 8. The Indian Army have occupied crucial heights in areas around the south bank of Pangong Lake and the Chinese have made several

MOSCOW, SEP 9 (PTI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday held separate bilateral meetings with his Kyrgyz and Tajik counterparts here and discussed bilateral ties and ways to boost India’s strategic partnership with the two Central Asian countries. Jaishankar is here on a four-day visit to Russia

to attend a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). “A fruitful meeting with FM Chingiz Aidarbekov of Kyrgyz Republic on SCO sidelines,” Jaishankar tweeted after his first bilateral meeting of the day. The two leaders discussed issues of bilateral

and regional interest. “Agreed to further enhance our strategic partnership in all spheres,” Jaishankar wrote. Jaishankar thanked Aidarbekov for the support in facilitating the return of Indian nationals from the Central Asian country. Air India operated several flights under Vande Bharat Mission to evacuate its nationals stranded in other nations due to lockdown. About 4,500 Indian students are studying medicine in various medical institutions in Kyrgyzstan. A few businessmen are engaged in trade and services in Kyrgyzstan, according to the Indian Embassy in Bishkek. Jaishankar later said he held a warm meeting with Tajik counterpart Sirojiddin Muhriddin. “Pleased with our g rowing bilateral and regional cooperation. Highly value this strategic partnership,” Jaishankar tweeted.

attempts to take over Indian positions. It has become the new friction point where Indian Army seems be in an advantageous position. The Indian Army has occupied heights that allow it to dominate the Chinese Moldo garrison and the Spangur Gap under Chinese control. Both Indian and China lay claim to some of these heights. One of the most critical heights the Indian Army is manning is the Rechin La, which the Chinese are protesting against. From here the Indian Army enjoys a vantage point not just over Chinese army military bases on the south bank of the the Pangong Lake but can also be within range of the Finger 4 area on the north of the lake on the opposite side. India and China have been engaged in a standoff since May at the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. Despite several levels of dialogue, there has not been any breakthrough and the deadlock continues.

SC stays Maratha reservation in Maharashtra NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for candidates belonging to Maratha community in Maharashtra and referred the matter to a Constitution Bench for final adjudication. However, a threejudge Bench led by Justice L Nageswara Rao said admissions already made to PG courses shall not to be altered. Now, the matter will be placed before CJI SA Bobde for constituting an appropriate Bench. But during the pendency of the matter before the top court no reservation can be given to the Maratha community under the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act. India ‘foremost’ Asian strategic partner: France NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (PTI): France on Wednesday described India as its “foremost” Asian strategic partner and said the upcoming visit of its Defence Minister Florence Parly to the country is aimed at further strengthening the “forward-looking” defence cooperation with New Delhi. Parly will visit India on Thursday to attend a ceremony in Ambala to induct the first batch of five Rafale jets into the Indian Air Force (IAF). The French defence minister will hold talks with her Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. A defence ministry spokesperson said Parly will be given a ceremonial Guard of Honour on her arrival in Delhi. The first batch of five Rafale jets arrived in India on July 29, nearly four years after India signed an intergovernmental agreement with France to procure 36 of the aircraft at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore. In a statement, the French embassy here said the focus of the talks will be on maritime security ties in the Indo-Pacific, counter-terror cooperation and strengthening overall bilateral defence partnership. “Their broad-ranging talks will cover, among others, industrial and tech-

nological partnership in line with the Make in India programme, operational defence cooperation, particularly maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, modalities of continuing the armed forces’ joint exercises in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, counter-terrorism cooperation as well as major regional and international strategic issues,” the embassy said. It said the talks will take forward the decision of French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to deepen and expand the Indo-French partnership with strategic autonomy, and the defence of a multipolar order as its cornerstones. It will be Parly’s third visit to India since 2017 and one of her very first official trips since the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic, the embassy said. The French defence minister will be accompanied by top executives

from Dassault Aviation, Thales Group, Safran, and MBDA, representing the French defence majors that have been partnering with many Indian companies as part of the Rafale deal. “At Ambala, the program will include ceremonial unveiling of the Rafale aircraft, a traditional ‘Sarva Dharma Puja’, air display by Rafale and Tejas aircraft as well as by ‘Sarang Aerobatic Team’,” the defence ministry said in a statement. Afterwards, a traditional water cannon salute will be given to the Rafale aircraft, it said. The Rafale jets, produced by French aerospace major Dassault Aviation, will be formally inducted into the IAF at the ceremony in Ambala air base on Thursday in presence of Singh, Parly and several top military officials. During her visit to the national capital, Parly will also pay floral tributes to In-

dia’s valiant soldiers at the National War Memorial. In a video message posted on Twitter, French ambassador Emmanuel Lenain talked about the strategic ties between the two countries and described the visit of Parly as one of the important steps further boosting bilateral relationship. The ties between India and France are on an upswing in the last few years with cooperation witnessing a major expansion in key areas. The areas of defence and security, civil nuclear cooperation and trade and investment constitute the principal pillars of the Indo-French strategic partnership. In addition, India and France are increasingly engaged in new areas of cooperation such as in the Indian Ocean region, climate change and sustainable growth and development. The two countries share a close degree of convergence on a range of regional and global issues as well including ways to deal with terrorism and extremism. Both India and France have important bilateral investment and trade cooperation. France has emerged as a major source of FDI in India with more than 1,000 French establishments operating in the country with a total turnover of around USD 20 billion.

2 Pak intruders killed along IB in Rajasthan JODHPUR/BIKANER, SEP 9 (PTI): The BSF killed two Pakistani nationals trying to sneak into India through the International Border in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar sector in the early hours of Wednesday, an official said. The Border Security Force recovered two pistols, Pakistani currency and eight kg heroin, among other things, from the intruders after the incident, they said. Early this morning, two persons were seen approaching the fencing near Khyaliwala border post in Sri Ganganagar sector, Deputy Inspector General, Rajasthan Frontier, Madan Singh Rathore said. “The guards on patrol challenged them and asked them to return. They did not heed the warning and the patrol party fired at them,” he said, adding that both the intruders were killed in the firing.

Harivansh files nomination to RS dy chairman post; likely to get elected

NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (PTI): JD(U) MP Harivansh on Wednesday filed his nomination as the ruling NDA candidate to the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman’s post and is likely to be elected, even as the opposition is working to field a joint candidate against him to force a contest. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s tally stands at 116 in the 245member House, which has an effective strength of 244, and its senior leaders have expressed confidence that non-NDA parties like Biju Janta Dal, YSR Congress, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which has nine, six and seven members respectively, will back Harivansh. BJP’s floor managers believe that he will get support of around 140 MPs in case of a contest. Harivansh filed his nomination in presence of Leader of Rajya Sabha

Harivansh (File)

Thawarchand Gehlot and BJP ally SAD leader Naresh Gujral. BJP president J P Nadda and LJP’s Ram Vilas Paswan are among his proposers. The election to the Deputy Chairman post will be held on September 14, the first day of Parliament’s monsoon session, which will end on October 1. September 11 is the last day of filing of nomination. Harivansh was the last person holding the post as well and the end of his Rajya Sabha term caused

the vacancy. He was elected to the House from Bihar recently. With the Congress favouring putting up a joint opposition candidate for the Deputy Chairman post, a contest is on cards. Harivansh had comfortably defeated B K Hariprasad of the Congress in the 2018 election to the post, bagging 125 votes to his rival’s 105. The NDA has since then further strengthened its presence in Rajya Sabha, with a disjointed opposition weakened further by its dwindling numbers unable to put up any strong obstacle in the government’s legislative agenda in the House. On Tuesday, the Congress in its parliamentary strategy group meeting decided not let the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman’s post go uncontested and favoured putting up a joint candidate for the entire opposition.

He said shortage of daily wage earners and migrant labourers was hampering functioning of businesses. Nagaland Contractors’ and Suppliers’ Union leaders too confirmed that there was shortage of migrant and skilled workers now. Though local workers were available, they said their charges were higher. And due to absence of any regulation in wages, sources said labour charges had spiked in recent times.

The research showed that growth correlates with how a company values digital adoption for its success. Of SMBs that reported good business growth in the past year, 56 per cent see digital as a lever for success, with only 14 per cent considering it of low importance. “A key finding from the research is that the more a company values digital transformation, the more positive they are about future growth, and nowhere in Asia is this reflected as strongly as in India,” Patel said. The sur vey also touched upon key challenges that Indian SMBs have identified as roadblocks on the road to recovery.

Mumbai, Sep 9 (IANS): Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on Wednesday announced that Silver Lake will invest Rs 7,500 crore into its subsidiary Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL). The investment values RRVL at a pre-money equity value of Rs 4.21 lakh crore. Silver Lake’s investment will translate into a 1.75 per cent equity stake in RRVL on a fully diluted basis, RIL said in a regulatory filing. This marks the second billion dollar investment by Silver Lake in a Reliance Industries subsidiary after the $1.35 billion investment in Jio Platforms announced earlier this year. Reliance Retail Limited, a subsidiary of RRVL, operates India’s largest, fastest growing and most profitable retail business serving close to 640 million footfalls across its

ing Director, Reliance Industries, said: “I am delighted to extend our relationship with Silver Lake to our transformational efforts of building an inclusive partnership with millions of small merchants while providing value to Indian consumers across the country in the Indian retail sector. “We believe technology will be key to bringing the much-needed transformation in this sector so that the various constituents of the retail ecosystem can collaborate to build inclusive growth platforms. Silver Lake will be an invaluable partner in implementing our vision for Indian Retail,” he added. Egon Durban, CoCEO and Managing Partner of Silver Lake, said, “The success of JioMart in such a short time span, especially while India, along with the rest of the world, battles the Covid-19 pandemic, is truly unprecedented, and the most exciting growth phase has just begun. Reliance’s New Commerce strategy could become the disruptor of this decade. We are thrilled to have been invited to partner with Reliance in their mission for Indian Retail.”

New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS): Over 73 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in India are confident that they will survive and bounce back post Covid-19, said a new report on Wednesday. The “HP Asia SMB Report 2020” showed that Indian SMBs are more confident than their Asian peers in bouncing back after the pandemic as the regional average stood at 60 per cent. This confidence is reflected in the fact that almost two-thirds of respondents from India believe that this period presents a good opportunity to reformulate the business strategy. Half of the respondents believe that the pandemic will ultimately bring opportunity, but in the longer term. More impor tantly, SMBs in India recognise the importance of going digital to revive their businesses. Three-quarters of the surveyed businesses believe that digital adoption is essential or very important to their success, said the report. “SMBs are critical to our economy as they contribute nearly a third of our GDP and generate employment for millions. Kabul bomb targets VP, kills 10 civilians: Afghan officials KABUL, SEP 9 (AP): A bombing in the Afghan capital on Wednesday targeted the convoy of the country’s first vice president, killing 10 people and wounding at least 31, including several of the vice president’s bodyguards, the Interior Ministry said. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack and the Taliban quickly denied they were behind the bombing. First Vice President Amrullah Saleh suffered minor burns in the blast. The bomb was hidden in a cart by the roadside and detonated as his convoy passed by. Saleh, who is also Afghanistan’s former intelligence chief, said in his first television appearance immediately after the attack that he was fine and had sustained only slight burns. He appeared in the TV footage with bandages on one hand. “Me and my younger son who was also with me are fine,” Saleh said. “I have slight burns on my face and hand from the wave of the blast. I don’t have exact details right now, but I apologize to those who suffered casualties and those who lost their property in

nothing to do with the Mujahedeen of the Islamic Emirate,” as the Taliban call themselves. Mohammad Masoom Stanekzai, head of Afghanistan’s negotiating team with the Taliban, condemned the attack in a tweet and urged an end to the killings. “Our people are desperately looking for peace,” he said. “It is crucial to put an urgent end to the violence. The time for excuses is over. The killings must end,” The U.N. chief ’s special representative for Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, said she was “relieved to hear” that Saleh survived the attack. Lyons added that she was shocked by the high number of civilian casualties, mainly bystanders. “Perpetrators must face justice,” she added. Both the insurgents and the Islamic State group are active in Kabul where tensions are also high ahead of the expected start of negotiations between an official Afghan delegation and the Taliban. Washington has been ramping up pressure on both sides to get the talks underway. America’s peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is

in Qatar, where the Taliban maintain a political office, trying to get the negotiations started. The negotiations, known as intra-Afghan talks, were envisaged as part of a peace deal the U.S. signed with the Taliban in Qatar in February to end America’s longest war. At the time, the talks were cast as Afghanistan’s best chance at peace after decades of conflict. Kabul’s peace negotiation team is waiting in the Afghan capital to travel to the Qatari capital of Doha for the talks but delays have been relentless. In recent days, Washington, officials in Kabul and the Taliban have all indicated that they could get under way imminently. The U.S.-Taliban deal allows for the exit of American soldiers from Afghanistan. However, U.S troop pullout, which has already begun, does not hinge on the success of intra-Afghan talks but rather on commitments from the Taliban to fight against other militant groups — such as the Islamic State group — and to prevent Afghanistan from being a staging arena for attacks against the U.S. and its allies.

9 Norwegian lawmaker nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize COPENHAGEN, SEP 9 (AP): A far-right Norwegian lawmaker said Wednesday that he has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in the Middle East. Christian TybringGjedde, a member of the Norwegian Parliament for the far-right Progress Party, said Trump should be considered because of his work “for a peace agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel which opens up for possible peace in the Middle East.” “No matter how Trump acts at home and what he says at press conferences, he has absolutely a chance at getting the Nobel Peace Prize,” TybringGjedde, told The Associated Press. He said he nominated Trump on Wednesday, adding that “Donald Trump meets the criteria” for the Nobel Peace Prize. Tybring-Gjedde was also one of two Norwegian lawmakers who nominated Trump for the peace prize in 2018 for his efforts to bring reconciliation between North and South Korea. Any national lawmaker can nominate someone for

the Nobel Peace Prize. The process of considering candidates and awarding the prize is done in Norway, in contrast to the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded in neighbouring Sweden. Nominations must be sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee by February 1. The Norwegian Nobel Committee doesn’t publicly comment on nominees. Under its rules, the information is required to be kept secret for 50 years. “It is now to hope that the Nobel Committee is able to consider what Trump has achieved internationally and that it does not stumble in established prejudice against the US President,” Tybring-Gjedde said in a Facebook post.

UNITED NATIONS, SEP 9 (PTI): Raising concerns over threats to journalists and human rights defenders, especially women, in Pakistan, a top UN body has called on the country’s leadership to unequivocally condemn incitement to violence against religious minorities and encourage respect for diversity of opinion. Gusty winds pose continued wildfire threats in California

Flames lick above vehicles on Highway 162 as the Bear Fire burns in Oroville, Calif., on Wednesday.(AP/PTI) berry between Shaver Lake and Fresno. In Southern California, fires burned in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego counties, and the forecast called for the arrival of the region’s notorious Santa Anas. The hot, dry winds could reach 50 mph at times, forecasters said. People in a half-dozen foothill communities east of Los Angeles were being told to stay alert because of a fire in the Angeles National Forest. “The combination of gusty winds, very dry air, and dry vegetation will create critical fire danger,” the National Weather Service

warned. The US Forest Service on Monday decided to close all eight national forests in the southern half of the state and shutter campgrounds statewide. More than 14,000 firefighters are battling fires. Two of the three largest blazes in state history are burning in the San Francisco Bay Area, though they are largely contained after burning three weeks. California has already set a record with nearly 2.3 million acres (930,800 hectares) burned this year - surpassing a record set just two years ago - and the worst part of the wildfire season is only beginning.

Bombay HC stays demolition of Kangana’s property

T

he Bombay High Court stayed demolition of actor Kangana Ranaut’s property by the Mumbai civic body for ‘illegal construction’. The court asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to file a reply on the actor’s petition. The matter will be heard at 3pm today before the bench of justice SJ Kathawalla. “We filed a petition this morning seeking urgent hearing. We have sought a stay on the demolition process by way of interim relief,” Ranaut’s advocate Rizwan Siddiqui told news agency PTI. The BMC on Wednesday demolished “illegal alterations” at the Bandra bungalow of Ranaut, a civic official said. The actor shared photos of the officials demolishing parts of her bungalow and called it the “death of democracy”. “Pakistan.... #deathofdemocracy”, she tweeted. Sena, called her home “Ram mandir”, referred to ‘Bullywood’ and described herself as the daughter of Chhatrapati Shivaji in a series of tweets and a video. The “Queen” actor, who has been given Y-plus category security from the Centre, was met with black flags and slogans from protesting Shiv Sena workers. But there was support too from workers of the RPI (A) and Karni Sena, who also gathered at the airport. Addressing Maharashtra chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav

Thackeray, Ranaut posted a video message saying his “ego will be destroyed” the way her Bandra home was demolished. The actor said she is working on a project on Ayodhya but now understands the pain of Kashmir Pandits and will also make a movie on their plight. Ranaut, known for her provocative statements, again compared Mumbai with Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) after the Shiv Sena-led BMC demolished “illegal alterations” at her Bandra bungalow.

“Uddhav Thackeray, ‘tujhe kya lagta hai’ (what do you think)?. You think you have taken a huge revenge by destroying my house in collusion with the movie mafia. Today my house is destroyed, tomorrow it will be your ego. The wheels of time keep changing,” she said in a video message in Hindi, referring to the chief minister in the informal ‘tu’ rather than the more respectful ‘aap’. On Wednesday, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut told India Today, “I have never threatened Kangana

Ranaut, I only expressed my anger at Mumbai being likened to POK, am not responsible for what action BMC takes.. matter is over for me, Kangana is welcome to live in Mumbai.” Ranaut also shared few photographs of BMC officials at her house, with the captions “Pakistan... #deathofdemocracy” and “Babur and his army #deathofdemocracy”. The actor posted past photos from the building, calling it her own “Ram Mandir”.

T

he Academy of Motion Picture Ar ts and Sciences has announced a new set of Inclusion Standards for movies to be eligible for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, starting with 2024 ceremony. The Oscars have come up with a number of new requirements in order ‘’to encourage equitable representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience.’’

The movies will have to tick at least two of four representation boxes, which have a number of subcategories. To be eligible to win the prestigious accolade the films must have employed a set number of actors, production members, marketing staff and interns who are women, people of colour, disabled or are among the LGBTQ+ community. The storyline will also need to be diverse, and the motion picture needs to

have offered traineeships or apprenticeships, be it on screen or behind the camera, to people from different backgrounds. Although the new rules won’t come into effect until 2024, an Academy Inclusion Standards form will be required in order to be considered for the 2022 ceremony and the 2023 ceremony. However, the 2021 ceremony, which is due to be held on April 25, will not be included. In a statement, Acad-

emy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said: ‘’The aperture must widen to reflect our diverse global population in both the creation of motion pictures and in the audiences who connect with them “The Academy is committed to playing a vital role in helping make this a reality. The NCB, however, said it did not want her custody as it had already questioned her for three days. Immediately after her arrest, the 28-year-old Rhea was taken for medical tests including COVID-19 test to the civic- run Sion hospital in Central Mumbai. At the hospital, her antigen test for

COVID-19 came out negative, officials said. She was then taken to the NCB office in south Mumbai around 7.15 pm, and produced before the court through video-conference. (PTI)

UEFA Nations League: Eng hold Denmark 0-0 Vikas Krishan gets SAI nod to train in US

England’s Harry Kane goes around Denmark’s Kasper Schmeichel before missing a chance to score REUTERS. COPENHAGEN/ SOLNA (SWEDEN),SEP 9 (AGENCIES): England endured a night of frustration as they were held to a 0-0 draw in a turgid Nations League clash in Denmark, reports Eurosports. The Three Lions struggled to carve out opportunities throughout but almost stole it at the death when Harry Kane had a shot cleared off the line. The hosts had the better of the openings overall and should have gone

ahead nine minutes from the end but Christian Eriksen blazed a great chance over the top. Following the media storm over Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden’s offfield antics, Gareth Southgate made three changes from the unconvincing win over Iceland. There were debuts from the start for Kalvin Phillips and Conor Coady, with the latter featuring in a back three as the visitors switched system. However, England

lacked creativity for long spells and not even the introduction of more flair in the shape of Mason Mount and another debutant, Jack Grealish could spark a belated surge to pinch another victory. The focus will now turn to the upcoming club season as the Premier League returns this weekend. England are next in Nations League action on October 11 when they entertain Belgium at Wembley. Denmark visit Iceland.

Ronaldo scores 100th goal as Portugal beat Sweden 2-0 Cristiano Ronaldo hits landmark goal as Portugal beat Sweden in Nations League, reports Sky Sports Cristiano Ronaldo became the first European player to reach 100 international goals after scoring twice in Portugal’s 2-0 win over 10-man Sweden. Veteran Sweden midfielder Gustav Svensson was sent off just before half-time for collecting a

second yellow card, and from the resulting free-kick, Ronaldo fired the ball into the top corner to bring up his landmark century. After 72 minutes, the Juventus forward - who missed Portugal’s Nations League opener against Croatia on Saturday with a toe injury - curled in a second goal from the edge of the penalty area. Ronaldo has set his sights on Iranian Ali Daei’s record for a male international of 109 goals. “I managed to beat this milestone of 100 goals and now (I’ll go) for the record. It’s step-by-step. I am not obsessed because I believe the records come in a natural way,” Ronaldo said. “When I had this problem in my toe I always knew that I could recover for this second game.” Asked about his future in the game, Ronaldo was quoted by Reuters as saying: “The future, only God knows. I am happy to play with these young players and I am enjoying a lot this moment both individually and collectively. Portugal have two wins from their opening Nations League fixtures, and top the table ahead of France, who beat Croatia 4-2 in Paris.

NEW DELHI, SEP 8 (PTI): Olympic-bound boxer Vikas Krishan has got the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) approval to train in the USA, where he also plans to resume his career in the professional circuit. SAI has approved his training in the US till November 30 and also sanctioned Rs 17.5 lakh for the stint. Vikas, who competes in 69kg category currently, is an Asian and Commonwealth Games gold-medallist. “Tokyo Olympics quota winner and boxer Vikas Krishan’s request to train in the United States as part of his preparations for Olympics has been approved by the Sports Authority of India,” the SAI said in a statement. “Vikas, who is a part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), has been approved a financial assistance of Rs 17.5 lakh for the duration of the visit,” it added. He will be travelling to the US later this week along with his American coach Ron Simms Jr and they will train at the Alexandria Boxing Club in Virginia till November 30. The exposure was recommended by Indian

Vikas Krishan boxing’s High Performance Director Santiago Nieva. “It will be a very good experience for Vikas. He’s been in the national team for so many years and for him, it is a good time to go and do a little bit different,” Nieva said. “After he comes back, we will focus on the camps and different tournaments for the Olympic-style boxing ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.” Vikas had expressed a desire to resume his professional career in the USA, where he is undefeated. He is contracted with Hall of Famer Bob Arum’s Top

Rank Promotions. In a recent interview to PTI, the Haryana-lad had stated that he expects to get at least three fights before heading back to India to join the national camp next year. “I am in touch with Top Rank Promotions. They have promised to arrange fights for me and I hope to compete in 3-4 bouts before the Olympics,” he had said. He will be making his third Olympic appearance in Tokyo next year and is the most experienced among the five men who have made the cut so far.

Naomi Osaka, of Japan, serves to Shelby Rogers, of the US, during the quarterfinal round of the US Open. (PTI) NEW YORK, SEP 9 (IANS): Japan’s Naomi Osaka advanced to the semi-finals of the ongoing US Open, defeating Shelby

Rogers in straight sets at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. On Tuesday, Osaka ousted Rogers 6-3, 6-4 in 79 minutes to make it to US Open semi-finals for the second time in her career. “I’m aware that the opponents that I play from now on are going to be very tough,” 4th-seeded Osaka said, in her post-match press conference as per the WTA website. “For me, I think the last two Grand Slams, everything happened so fast, I wasn’t really in the moment. I’m just really happy to be in the semis, and hopefully I can keep going.” Osaka fired 24 winners, including seven aces, and made only eight unforced errors. The Japanese player, who won the first of her two consecutive Grand Slam titles in New York two years ago, was nearly peerless off of her first serve, winning 83 per cent of points when she got that shot into play. “The big thing for me was to be the aggressor and to be okay with making unforced errors,” said Osaka. “Apparently I didn’t make that many. But, yeah, just to accept the unforced errors because I know that I’m going for shots.” Osaka will now face No.28 seed Jennifer Brady in the final four. Brady had dispatched No.23 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan earlier on Tuesday to reach her first-ever Grand Slam semifinal.

Ganguly leaves for Dubai to take stock of IPL preparations NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (PTI): BCCI president S o u r av G a n g u ly o n Wednesday left for Dubai to oversee preparations for a bio-secure IPL beginning on September 19. Defending champions Mumbai Indians will face Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the T20 event, which has been moved to the UAE due to the rising COVID-19 cases in India. “My first flight in 6 months to dubai for IPL... crazy life changes,” Ganguly posted on his Instagram handle with a picture in which he is wearing a mask and face shield, part of the Standard Operating Procedure while flying amid the pandemic. The BCCI was able to create a window for the IPL following the postponement of the T20 World Cup in Australia, scheduled for October-November. The Board would have faced a revenue loss of Rs 4000 crore if the tournament, which usually takes place in April-May, had not got the go ahead. IPL chairman Brijesh Patel is among

Sourav Ganguly the other key officials who are already in Dubai. The tournament, despite its strict health safety measures, has already endured instances of contingent members testing positive for the dreaded virus. Chennai Super Kings has been the worst affected with 13 of its members, including two players, in quarantine after testing positive. Fans will not be allowed inside stadiums when the league starts but some crowd might be approved in the later stages of the tournament after a review of the COVID-19 situation. The event will be played at three venues -Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
