He said the rest of India has much to learn from the North Eastern states citing examples of their cleanliness, development and literacy level. Jayanthi Natarajan (File)
NEW DELHI, SEP 9 (AGENCIES): The CBI on Saturday registered a corruption case against former Union Environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan and raided her premises in Chennai in connection with clearance given during her tenure for diversion of forest land for mining in alleged violation of laws. The CBI alleged that Natarajan, as the environment minister during UPA rule , abused her official position while giving clearances to Electosteel Casting Limited, a private company in Jharkhand, in violation of the existing mining laws, environment laws and directions of the Supreme Court. “Jayanthi Natarajan accorded the approval for diversion of 55.79 hectares of forest land for non-forestry use to ECL, though the same had been rejected by the earlier minister of state ... without any change in the circumstances after rejection,” the CBI FIR said.
The central anti-corruption probe agency had registered five Preliminary Enquiries (PEs) in 2015 to probe alleged irregularities committed by Natarajan and others while giving clearances to several projects. After the anomalies became public, Natarajan was removed as the environment minister by the Congress. She had written an explosive letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi alleging that it was on Rahul Gandhi’s directives that she had red-flagged big-ticket projects in the environment ministry. The Congress even went on to say that the timing and content of Natarajan’s letter indicated that she was under pressure from corporate houses linked to BJP to write against Rahul. The CBI sources said that the former director of Electosteel, Umang Kejriwal, has also been named in its FIR. Sources added that Natarajan would be called for questioning very soon. The CBI had registered two PEs in October 2014 against unknown environment ministry officials, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd and JSW Steel. The agency later registered another PE to probe clearances to Rungta Mines in Ghatkuri Reserve Forest of Jharkhand and two more enquiries. Some of Jayanthi Natarajan’s decisions were contradicted by her Cabinet colleague Jairam Ramesh.

administrative setup and appealed to the state government to bring all the six Chang villages under Tuensang district administration. The delegation maintained that the proposed initiative was being pursued for administrative convenience and not for any electoral purpose. The chief minister assured to take up the matter with the concerned department. NPO: Naga Public Organisation, Myanmar (NPO) has sought the help of Nagaland government to setup a guest house for the Nagas of Myanmar in Dimapur, which would act as a Center of correspondence for the Nagas of India and Myanmar. DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN): In the light of the July 26, 2017 landmark Supreme Court judgment, the Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) appealed to Governor of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, PB Acharya, to “act constitutionally” on the “unconstitutional appointments” of parliamentary secretaries and advisors. NPRAAF information & publicity cell termed as “very unfortunate” that the governor still allowed the two state governments to retain unconstitutional post of parliamentary secretaries and advisors defying the Supreme Court judgement. The forum stated that the governor should not remain oblivious to the issue, saying his sole role was to protect the constitution and not run the government. NPRAAF maintained that the “credibility of the governor” would be enhanced if he acted before the “ultimate judgement” of the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court, which it said was bound to be in line with several High Court and Supreme Court Judgments. In this regard, NPRAAF has urged the governor to act upon fearlessly in tune with the Constitution of India to instil peoples’ confidence in the governor’s office. According to NPRAAF, it has also submitted a representation to the governor through his special officer on September 9, 2017 to quash the unconstitutional appointments of parliamentary secretaries and advisors before the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court verdict.

want to give adequate time to taxpayers,” Jaitley told reporters after the meeting. “There are transient challenges in technology. The Council decided to appoint a committee, the composition of which will be announced in a day or two. It will consist of ministers who will interact with GST to ensure a smooth transformation,” he said. The decision was taken after the Council reviewed the functioning of the GST Network platform. A detailed presentation was given to the members by GSTN officials. Jaitley said the portal did face technical glitches on two-three occasions due to overload. He also said that in consonance with the recommendations of the fitment committee, the tax
rates on approximately 30 goods of common man’s utility, including raincoats, rubberbands and batter for idli and dosa, have been reduced. Khadi fabric through Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956 (KVIC) stores will now be exempted under GST. Talking about the increase in cess rates on automobiles, he said that while status quo has been maintained for small cars (petrol and diesel), hybrid cars and 13-seater vehicles, the Council decided to increase the cess rates for some segments. Goods and Services Tax cess on mid-segment cars has been increased by 2 per cent, for large segment cars it has been increased by 5 per cent and for SUVs by 7 per cent, he said.
Security upped along Indo-Myanmar border Correspondent
IMPHAL, SEP 9: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday said that security along the Indo-Myanmar border on Manipur side has been beefed up to check possible influx of the displaced Rohingya Muslims. The steps have been particularly taken up along the borderline at Moreh in Tengnoupal district and Biyang of in Churachandpur district, he added. Over 270,000 Rohingya have fled northern Myanmar in the past two weeks and most of them have landed in Bangladesh. More than 1,000 people have been killed in the violence, according to media reports. Meanwhile, more Muslim based bodies in Manipur have condemned the killing of Rohingya Muslims. All India Tanzeem-e-Insaaf, Manipur State Council alleged that since October last year till date over 1,70,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar and were taking shelter in Bangladesh.
DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN): Nagaland Press Association (NPA) has expressed shock over assassination of Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist and Editor of the weekly Gauri Lankesh Patrike, outside her home in Bangalore on September 5. Gauri Lankesh’s weekly, which had been described as an ‘anti-establishment’ publication, was known for being not just a critic of right-wing Hindu extremism but also raised voice against powerful organisations. NPA said Gauri paid the price for standing up for her beliefs. Stating that violence and killing was not the way to confront our differences, NPA said in a democracy, which we have adopted, dissent is legitimate and part of free speech. “If there is anything that is contrary to the spirit of our democracy and rule
of law, the judiciary is there to address grievances and give justice,” it added. Resorting to violence is not only undemocratic but it makes us unworthy as humans-- valuing life and order, NPA said with the firm belief that dialogue remains the best way forward to resolve whatever differences people may have. Meanwhile, NPA said it stood with the rest of the media and human fraternity in demanding that the guilty be brought to justice. NPA also expressed concerned by the manner in which the issue had been politicized even to the extent that the media was divided along “so called ideological lines”. “The media is acknowledged as the fourth pillar of democracy and we should remain conscious of our duties-- to stand for truth, fairness and dialogue,” NPA asserted.
GPRN/NSCN condemns news report DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN): GPRN/ NSCN has vehemently condemned the news report published in a local daily on September 8, 2017 under the headline-“GPRN/NSCN to start political talk with Centre”. GPRN/NSCN through its MIP has said that the reporter who reported the news had crossed all boundaries and ethics of journalism by concocting an article attributed to GPRN/NSCN leaders C Singson and Hokato Vusshe. MIP said that C. Singson, advisor to collective leadership of GPRN/NSCN got a call from the reporter, H. Chishi on September 6 and a friendly chat between two individuals took place after a long time. Singson had shared his casual views without any intention or without a hint that his friend on the other end would go to the media, MIP said. However, it said “a personal view in the capacity of GPRN/NSCN official was inflated with great negativity”. MIP said that the reporter did not express prior request for a media interview either in person or through telephone. On the same day, MIP said that the reporter also spoke to kilonser Hokato Vusshe over the phone to clarify on the prejudiced, inflammatory and personal
comments which the reporter posted on the Sumi social media platform. Since there was never a word uttered on the current political situation, MIP expressed surprise as to how and from where H. Chishi quoted Hokato Vusshe on political matters. Though there was no question of infringing upon the freedom of the press, MIP however said the improper practice must be pointed out since the reporter had tarnished the good image of the media fraternity of Nagaland. would be the chief minister of the eighth Left Front Government in Tripura. He is physically strong and capable of running the government efficiently,”
state CPI-M secretary Bijan Dhar told reporters here. The state assembly elections are scheduled to be held in February next year. Replying to a question, he said there is no bar in the party constitution that a person would not be able to contest elections or hold the post of chief minister for more than two or three terms. When his attention was drawn to the fact that senior party leader Sitaram Yechuri was not allowed to contest in the Rajya Sabha for more than two terms, Dhar said it is the convention in CPI-M that one member would not contest from the RS for more than two terms. “Moreover, a party general secretary cannot hold any parliamentary post because he is supposed to concentrate more on party building. Harkishen Singh Surjeet was elected as party general secretary and never contested for a Rajya Sabha seat,” Dhar said.
rural areas were losing their earnings due to reduction of work days under the MGNREGA. “A s t h e c e n t r a l government is yet to give funds for the last financial year (2016-17), a serious job crisis has emerged in rural Tripura,” said Dhar, also a CPI-M Central Committee member. He said although all the states in the country we r e f a c i n g a s i m i l a r situation, no political party other than the CPI-M was raising the issue or asking the central government to act in a more considerate manner on MGNREGA. The MGNREGA was introduced in February 2006 by the then Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. It mandates 100 days of work in a financial year to at least one member of each rural household, but this has never been achieved in any state. The scheme aims to generate rural assets and create rural infrastructure like roads, ponds and water reservoirs. The average wage rate in the country was Rs 161.87 per day per person in the last financial year. The CPI-M has demanded an increase in the number of work days in a financial year to 200 and a hike in the wages to at least Rs 300 per day.

Paradise Imperiled: Sikkim pays price for Gorkhaland
Tourists taking yak safari
GANGTOK, Sep 9 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : S u r a j Biswakarma is a worried man. The f lourishing tourism business in Sikkim that was raking in big bucks for many like him has dried up, thanks to the neighbouring hills of Darjeeling shutting down to press its demand for separate statehood . During the tourist season, the 33-year-old taxi driver from Gangtok easily made Rs 70,000 a month, but this year he has barely managed Rs 25,000. “Our biggest festival (Dashain) is around the
corner. Every year I visit my in-laws with gifts. I don’t know what my family and I will do this time,” he said. Sandwiched between China to the north and West Bengal to the south, the land-locked state of Sikkim has been brought to its knees as the Gorkhaland shutdown approaches a record-breaking three months. The state’s only lifeline to the outside world, National Highway 10, remains open, but with 70km of it lying in Darjeeling and Kalimpong and reports of violence in the hills, tourists have kept
away. Tourism may have been the hardest hit, but virtually no other sector has remained unaffected either. “ S i k k i m ’ s development has slowed d ow n a s we d e p e n d on Siliguri for all our resources,” said former tourism minister KT G ya l t s e n , n ow l e g a l advisor to the r uling Sikkim Democratic Front party. “The construction industry is affected. We have children studying in Dar jeeling schools. People have taken a lot of loans and many of our youth are dependent on the tourism industry. It (the shutdown) has hit our economy.” Tourism secretary Chewang Zangpo pointed out that between January and June this year, tourist footfall in the state hit a record 11.75 lakh, which included 31,000 foreigners, and then fell sharply. “Sikkim has been grossly affected. Although the national highway was always open, many countries started issuing advisories cautioning their citizens to avoid our state,”
crop area inundated, the report said. No fresh death due to the deluge has been reported Saturday. As many as 159 people have lost their lives in this year’s floods. he said. The price that Sikkim is paying for the Darjeeling cause may be putting a strain on the overwhelming support it extended to its neighbour at the start of this latest round of agitation. What was initially a display of solidarity for neighbours of a similar culture, rapidly digressed into alarm as Sikkim vehicles came under attack across the border. As income from the tourism sector which has been flourishing in the past decade, remains nonexistent, frustration is on the rise. Gyalsten has a logical explanation for Sikkim’s support for the cause. “If we had stayed silent, disturbance would have started right from Rangpo (the town bordering West Bengal). Our message was ‘We support the movement and now leave us alone,’” he said. Pintso Chopel, Sikkim Democratic Front MLA Gangtok echoes a similar sentiment. “Our sympathy is always there but we want the problem solved as early as possible,” he said.

IAF chief warns more Pathankot-type attacks
Bengaluru, Sep 9 (IANS): Indian Air Force chief B.S. Dhanoa on Saturday hinted at more Pathankot-type terror attacks on military bases in the country. “...The military will continue to get targeted, like it happened at Pathankot. They (terrorists) will try and surprise us by attacking in a totally new location,” he delivering the annual lecture in the memory of late IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal L.M. Katre here. A heavily-armed terror group from across the border attacked IAF’s Pathankot base on January 2, 2016, and seven security personnel were killed before the 10 terrorists were killed in a operation lasting for three days. “Post Pathankot terrorist attacks last year, the IAF has carried out a series of measures to enhance its ability to protect,” said Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa. Reiterating that the IAF had strengthened the defence of its bases, he said intense training had been
Several shops reopen in Darjeeling hills DARJEELING, SEP 9 (AGENCIES): A large number of shops on Saturday reopened in the Darjeeling hills, braving threats and intimidation by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), even as the indefinite shutdown in the hills entered its 87th day. The police and administration appealed to the locals on Saturday through public address system to open their shops and restore normalcy in the hills. The development comes two days after a blast took place in Mirik, forcing shopkeepers to close their shops. Peace rallies were taken out by the residents of Kurseong, Darjeeling and Mirik demanding restoration of peace in the hills. State Tourism Minister and senior TMC leader Gautam Deb welcomed the opening of the shops. “GJM is tr ying to threaten the masses through bomb blasts and violence, but the people of the hills will not bow down before the threats. People are against the divisive politics of Bimal Gurung. They want peace and stability,” he said. Echoing him, expelled GJM leader Binay Tamang thanked the people “for not bowing before the threat and intimidation of the GJM”.

carried out to counter ‘fidayeen’ attacks. “As a service, we are prepared for a conflict at a very short notice,” he said. Ruling out any largescale terror attack on civil structure as in the 26/11 Mumbai attack, Dhanoa said the military would be targeted. “The possibility of a large-scale terror attack on civil infrastructure like it happened in Mumbai on 26/11, or on Parliament (on December 13, 2001), is slightly remote, as it will invite worldwide condemnation,” he said. On the strategic environment, Dhanoa said on
the northern border, there was a difference in the Indian and Chinese perception of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which is sometimes at “so much variation that it results in a standoff, which hopefully gets resolved”. Referring to the recent standoff at Doklam, Dhanoa clarified that there was no airspace violation from either side as fighters on both sides maintain at least 10 km distance from the LAC. China, however, maintains a continuous air presence in Tibet and the strength of its presence increases and decreases as per the exercises, he said. “In case the relationship (between the countries) deteriorates, a buildup of infrastructure is the first step that anybody would take before they envisage any offensive operation in this sector,” he added. Noting that the IAF was replacing its low-end weapons with indigenous ones, the Air Chief said the top-end weapons were imported.
Delhi HC seeks reply on schools run by civic bodies New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS): The Delhi High Court has sought response from the AAP government on a plea seeking direction that all the schools run by civic bodies should be taken over by Delhi government. A division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal asked Delhi government, North, South, East Delhi Municipal Corporation, New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Cantonment Board and Central government on the issue by September 19. The plea said in 2010, the NCERT Committee on RTE (Right to Education) Implementation had recommended that all schools run by the government, civic bodies be administered by one single body i.e., government of NCT of Delhi. During the hearing, court said: “Sort out all the problems. Civic agencies have to look for other civic amenities... Where is the scope of running schools.” The plea filed by NGO Social Jurist through advocate Ashok Agarwal said that over 25 lakh students study in Delhi government and local bodies run schools in Delhi which are under different authorities.
Mamata regime infringing on national unity, says Goyal Ko l k ata , S e p 9 (IANS): Taking a swipe at West Bengal’s Mamata B a n e r j e e g ove r n m e n t which opposed the circular on viewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address on September 11, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said it is “politicising any and everything” and accused it of “infringing into unity and integrity of the country”. “Really, no comments to make. I can only say I feel sorry for the people of West Bengal...” he said to a query that the state government’s stand that it would not direct state-run varsities to follow the University Grants Commission (UGC) circular asking all the Vice Chancellors of universities and heads of higher educational institutions to “provide opportunity and facility to the teachers and students to view” Modi’s address to students. Asked about the state’s claim that such circular was infringing into federal system, Goyal said: “It is very sad that state government is politicising any and everything. He is the Prime
Piyush Goyal
Minister of India. India is a united and one country ... making such comments I think the state government and Mamata Banerjee ji is actually infringing into unity and integrity of the country.” Modi would be addressing a student leaders’ convention on the theme of ‘Young lndia, New India A Resurgent Nation: from Sankalp to Sidhhi’ in New Delhi on the occasion of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s centenary celebration and 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s address at the Chicago World Parliament of Religions. Goyal also alleged the
state government’s activities were indulging to “communalism”. “It is said in their (the Banerjee government’s) over-anxiety to appease a section of society and that is more than evident from the step being recently taken to try and stop one community (Hindus) from even doing the religious rites which is integral part for decades or centuries and this kind of like communalism that the state government of West Bengal has indulged in must stop forthwith,” Goyal said when asked that the state described the circular as an attempt to ‘saffronise’ education.
Modi regime not concerned about healthcare: Rahul New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday slammed the Centre’s approach towards health, saying the Modi regime is only concerned about private hospitals and not government ones. “ T h e r e i s a v i ew among the people that the Indian government healthcare system can be run by private hospitals. For a country like India where you have poor people, you simply cannot do away with public hospitals,” said Gandhi in a recorded video message. Gandhi said the government is not spending the money required for boosting the public healthcare system. “Every time I have been there is because of ence phalitis problems among patients. I categorically told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that there is a problem in the hospital. Everybody was complaining -- doctors and patients and all,” said Gandhi, referring to the BRD Hospital in Gorakhpur where over 60 children died in five days.
Rajnath Singh in Kashmir; India, Bangladesh discuss Rohingya crisis meets cross-section of people Srinagar, Sep 9 (IANS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday began a four-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir and reviewed the security situation during a meeting with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti even as militants attacked a police party in Anantnag, killing one and injuring two others. Singh is to visit Anantnag on Sunday and address policemen and CRPF troopers in Khanabal area of the same district. A gunfight also began in a village of Shopian district in the evening. After his official meetings were over, Singh met 24 delegations, including local boatmen, hoteliers, artisans and youth among others. Earlier in the day, Singh held a meeting with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti immediately after he arrived here with a team of union Home Ministry officials, including Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba. “Overall security situation was reviewed at the
Union Home Minister’s meeting with the Chief Minister,” official sources said here. During his visit, Singh is to also co-chair with Mehbooba Mufti, a meeting of the Unified Headquarters which is the topmost antimilitancy grid in the state. Affordable medicine: WHO wants bold steps
New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS): Aiming to make medicines and treatment affordable for everyone, the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday asked the South East Asian nations to take bold action ensuring citizens access to safe efficacious, quality and affordable medical products. The WHO also wants more emphasis to be given on leveraging collective strengths through greater inter-country cooperation. The global body says across the South-East Asia Region, an estimated 65 million people are pushed into poverty due to out-ofpocket health-care payments, with the cost of medicines being one of the main causes. “Overcoming barriers and ensuring all people everywhere can access essential medicines is one of WHO South-East Asia’s priority areas of work,” said Poonam Singh Khetrapal, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia

Region. “It is vital to achieve universal health coverage, and with it the Sustainable Development Goal of health and well-being for all,” Khetrapal said. She was speaking at the 70th Regional Committee Session of WHO South East Asia Region being held in Male. “Poor-quality or unsafe medicines likewise affects peoples’ ability to access the treatment they need, when they need it, while weak supply chains and inefficient procure-
ment provide similar barriers,” she said. Stating that significant progress has been made in recent years, including the creation of the South-East Asia Regulatory Network (SEARN) in 2016, which pools the Region’s regulatory resources to enhance the safety and quality of medicines, Khetrapal called for the need to build on that progress and strengthen regional cooperation in a range of areas to further address this critical issue. She also outlined few key areas where countries
can work together, and with WHO, to drive substantial gains in access to medicines across the Region-- scaling up of inter country and regional collaboration on public procurement and pricing and fully operationalize the SEARN. Other key areas include countries to improve antimicrobial stewardship by applying the Access, watch and Reserve system. The conference which ends on September 10 also saw the global health body calling for immediate measures against vector-borne diseases in South East Asia region. It called for an urgent need for more trained entomologists in the region, followed by collaboration of cross-border programmes on vector control. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), countries also need to establish and strengthen effective entomological surveillance systems.
New Delhi, Sep 9 (AGENCIES): Bangladesh, which is facing a big influx of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, today explained its situation to India and the pressure it was under due to the migration. Bangladesh High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali on Saturday called on Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar during which the two sides discussed the issue of Rohingya Muslims in detail. During the meeting, which lasted for more than half-an- hour, the Bangladesh envoy also talked about the need for the international community to intervene and put pressure on Myanmar to address the exodus, sources in Bangladesh High Commission here said. They said the Bangladesh government was providing shelter to these refugees out of humanitarian considerations but it was putting a lot of pressure on the country. “Thousands of Rohingya Muslims are coming to Bangladesh daily. It is creating a lot of problem for the country,” an official in the Bangladesh High Commission said. According to the United Nations, nearly
300,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar’s Rakhine state into Bangladesh since August 25 when fresh wave of violence erupted. According to media reports, the violence began when Rohingya militants attacked police posts in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state. Rohingya residents a stateless mostly Muslim minority in a Buddhistmajority nation - allege that the military and Rakhine Buddhists respond-
ed with a brutal campaign against them, according to the reports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who concluded his three-day visit to Myanmar on Thursday, expressed solidarity with the gover nment there against the “extremist violence” in the Rakhine state. Modi also urged all stakeholders to find a solution that respects the country’s unity. India also refused to be a part of a declaration
adopted at an international conference recently in Indonesia as it carried “inappropriate” reference to violence in Rakhine state from where Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh. An Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan, dissociated itself from the ‘Bali Declaration’ adopted at the ‘World Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable Development’ held in Indonesia.

Trying terror
fter 24 years of trial, the Terrorist And Disruptive Act (TADA) Court in Mumbai finally awarded various sentences to terrorists involved in the March 12, 1993 Mumbai serial blasts but even that too would await the confirmation by the Supreme Court. The TADA Court sentenced two co-accused: Tahir Merchant and Firoze Abdul Rashid Khan to death while the others- Karimullah Khan, and Abu Salem were given life imprisonment. Abu Salem cannot be hanged till death because of the extradition treaty signed with Portugal. Another convict, Riaz Siddiqui, was awarded ten year rigorous imprisonment. In March 1993 Mumbai 12 powerful serial blasts rocked several parts of Bombay(now Mumbai) killing around 257 people and injuring over 700 injured, many of them crippled or infirmed for life. The coordinated attacks, were carried out in revenge for earlier riots that killed many Muslims. The attacks were coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim, don of the Bombay-based international organised crime syndicate named DCompany. Ibrahim is believed to have ordered and helped organise the bombings in Mumbai, through his subordinates Tiger Memon and Yakub Memon. The Maharashtra state government executed Yakub Memon, on 30 July 2015. Dawood and Tiger Memon are absconding and evading arrest. The mastermind-Dawood Ibrahim is believed to be shuttling between Pakistan and UAE and residing in a posh locality in Karachi. There have been several terrorist attacks in India during the past decades and several of them have still much to go before they can complete the process for conviction(s). For the people in the north east, the October 30, 2008 Guwahati bombings was among the most horrific in which 81 died and 470 injured. The blasts were believed to be the handiwork of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). The leaders of this particular outfit have since come overground and are presently coalition partners with BJP in Assam. In 2007, the Samjhauta Express was attacked when bombs exploded around midnight on February 18, 2007. The Samjhauta Express, a twice-weekly train service connecting Delhi, India, and Lahore, Pakistan. In the blasts, of the 68 fatalities, most were Pakistani civilians. The victims also included some Indian civilians and three railway policemen. The probe is yet to be conclusive as there appears to be a conflict as to who was responsible- Abinav Bharat (an ultra right wing Hindu outfit) or LashkarE-Taeba (a Pakistani terror outfit). The other horrific terror attack in Mumba was in 2011 on November 26 when Pakistani trained gunmen killed 166 persons and injuring 293 including foreigners. Ajmal Qasab, a Pakistani was nabbed and later executed for his crimes while nine others were killed by security forces during the four-day siege of Mumbai. Terror attacks in India are real and there is every need to be extra vigilant even as ISIS has placed India under its radar. The trial of the terrorists involved in the murderous attacks has taken so long while many of those who suffered grievous injuries died without seeing justice being done. This is how the criminal justice system in India works- inordinate delays that can go on as long as 20 to 30 years and by the time even a simple sentence is awarded, either the victim or accused have died and leaving only the ghost of the past.
DailyDevotion Do It Yourself (2) …bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ… —2 Corinthians 10:5 Determinedly Discipline Other Things. This is another difficult aspect of the strenuous nature of sainthood. Paul said, according to the Moffatt translation of this verse, “…I take every project prisoner to make it obey Christ….” So much Christian work today has never been disciplined, but has simply come into being by impulse! In our Lord’s life every project was disciplined to the will of His Father. There was never the slightest tendency to follow the impulse of His own will as distinct from His Father’s will— “the Son can do nothing of Himself…” (John 5:19). Then compare this with what we do— we take “every thought” or project that comes to us by impulse and jump into action immediately, instead of imprisoning and disciplining ourselves to obey Christ. Practical work for Christians is greatly overemphasized today, and the saints who are “bringing every thought [and project] into captivity” are criticized and told that they are not determined, and that they lack zeal for God or zeal for the souls of others. But true determination and zeal are found in obeying God, not in the inclination to serve Him that arises from our own undisciplined human nature. It is inconceivable, but true nevertheless, that saints are not “bringing every thought [and project] into captivity,” but are simply doing work for God that has been instigated by their own human nature, and has not been made spiritual through determined discipline. We have a tendency to forget that a person is not only committed to Jesus Christ for salvation, but is also committed, responsible, and accountable to Jesus Christ’s view of God, the world, and of sin and the devil. This means that each person must recognize the responsibility to “be transformed by the renewing of [his] mind….” (Romans 12:2).

Post-mortem ‘GPRN/NSCN condemns Nagaland is fertile for unethical journalism of H. Chishi’ political inconsistencies O
hen a manufacturer cannot market his product, the manufacturer will definitely loss interest and the better alternative is to stop the production of the material which cannot be marketed. In other words, when the consumers refuse to buy such product, it becomes a wastage for the manufacturer to make further investment on that particular item, and therefore the only option is to stop manufacturing the kind of unmarketable item. Similarly, even in politics, when a political ideology is adopted by a political party, it is expected to attract interest of the general public to that party. On the contrary, if that ideology fails to fetch dividend, that political party may have to set it aside and opt for more attractive alternative. In the contemporary social, religious and political realm of the Nagas, falsehood has overwhelmed truth. Good majority of the Nagas do prefer to opt for falsehood. All those who uphold falsehood are neither ignorant nor uninformed lot but it is their decision to abet falsehood. In my analysis, the major reason that influences these people to stand by falsehood is no other than vested interest for which they do take advantage on the given situation with personal motives. The trademark of these people is cunningness. Such persons intend to make hay during sunshine. The other is, one who lacks altruism. The individual is so self-centred and totally bereft of common concern. Such person lacks gut to call spade a spade as timidity is his choicest cocoon. Such person prefers to remain neutral always. Today, this cluster of people are the major contributor to prevailing chaos in Naga world. The worst is the elite section of Naga society of today. This section in Naga society is the most enlightened category and is considered the creamy layer of the society. ow that everyone has suddenly woken up to the fact that agreeing to an unknown solution under the Framework Agreement, proposed by the N.S.C.N. (I-M) and signed with The Government of India, is not a very intelligent thing to do; everyone is clamouring for the other Naga National Political Groups to be taken on board by the N.S.C.N.(I-M). But I beg to disagree. The I-M has its own reasons for keeping the deal secret. It is my belief that if they could have revealed the contents, they would have done so by now, and there is no way that they are going to let the other Political Groups be privy to their closely guarded secret. In a manner of speaking, the I-M is right in their refusal to let the other Groups share in what has been the fruit, good or bad, of their sole effort. If you hunt and kill an animal, cook and prepare it for eating; you would be reluctant to share it with others, though it be either nourishing or poisonous. And that is what all of us are clamouring for the I-M to do. The Framework Agreement is the Brainchild of the N.S.C.N. (I-M) and its amorphous “Collective Leadership” and they have sole and full rights to it. What the remaining 6 NNPGs should do is come up with proposals of their own. I’m certain all of them have certain views as to how our Nagaland Political Issue has to be settled. Let them discuss things and come up with concrete suggestions. Then they can discuss their proposals with The Government of India and the N.S.C.N. (I-M). The contents of the Framework Agreement can be compared with the Proposals of the 6 NNPGs and a suitable compromise arrived at. But even if this were to be achieved, the N.S.C.N. (K) would still have to be accommodated. Many of
changes. People of this section do know the difference between good and evil and common man expect much from them, and yet today, the Naga elite section has no comment on good, evil, right and wrong. The elite section prefers to remain neutral as it does not dare to spell out the truth and get entailed in any controversy. In the dictionary of these people, the vocabularies-good or evil, false or truth and yes or no are not printed. Their considered wiser strategy is to remain mute spectator to any situation that crops up. Nonetheless, ultimately they are counted to be the abettors of all the devilish developments for the natural law that if one is not for good cause he is for bad cause. Two women followers of Dera sect were raped by its founding leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim. The rape victims believed the teachings and became followers of the self proclaimed Baba Rahim. In the same fashion, the believers of falsehood are mentally raped by the manufacturers of lies. Those who uphold falsehood and lies are the consumers of the products so marketed by the manufacturers. Particularly, today in Nagaland there is no dearth of consumers of lies, concoct stories and falsehood. Nagaland is therefore most fertile for cultivation of lies as the market is viable. The rules for kickboxing are much liberal for the player to use both hands and feet against the opponent. There can be hardly any punitive measure against a player who causes much harm to fellow player since one is permitted to use the tactics of boxing, wrestling, karate and judo. Politics is similar to that of kickboxing game. Therefore, it is futile to nurture old wound. And yet, the repeated political inconsistencies adopted and also made it appear in the media reminded me of the following specific instances of the past as few of which had immense impact on the social and political landscape of Nagaland and some of which will have
similar effect on our society in future are now found fit for introspection which will do good to our society if taken positively. 1. The American Baptist leaders along with Quakers from Britain implored upon the Naga National political groups to reconcile. Particularly, the American Christian leaders invited the Naga political group leaders to have the reconciliation meet at Atlanta, USA in 1997. Had this meet been successful, such reconciliation would have been most respectable and carried much political bearings in the long run. Yet, the meet was forced to face the jolt due to absence of NSCN(IM). The is one of the most regrettable histories in the contemporary Naga politics as NSCN(IM) preferred to have exclusive dialogue with GOI at the cost of Naga unity. What NSCN(IM) did not want other NNPGs to be around in the periphery of dialogue may now give birth to a new dimension which is essential for sustainable coexistence. 2. In June 2002, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee(NPCC) published a booklet titled ‘The bedrock of Naga Society’. The opening sentence runs as this: ‘The 16-Point Agreement of 1960 came about when the Nagas were going through the worst of times. But it was also one of the best things to have happened to the Naga people because it led to the birth of Statehood...’ We all know that 16-Point Memorandum is the mother of Art371(A) and not otherwise. Immediately there were sharp reactions from several quarters and particularly former CM N. Rio, present MP paired with K. Therie, present President, NPCC who just left Congress, teamed with the erstwhile NPC and formed NPF and actively backed by NSCN(IM) followed by the rest of other political groups exploited the situation. (To be concluded) Z. Lohe
n 8th September 2017 Nagaland Page carried a caption “GPRN/NSCN to start political talk with Center”. Mr. H. Chishi the reporter who reported the article has crossed all boundaries and ethics of journalism by concocting an article attributed to GPRN/NSCN leaders C Singson and Hokato Vusshe. On 6th Sept. 2017 Mr. C. Singson, Advisor to Collective Leadership of GPRN/ NSCN got a call from Mr. H. Chishi and a friendly chat between two responsible individuals after a long time happened. On being asked Mr. C Singson shared casual views without any intention or without a hint that his friend on the other end would go to the media. A personal view in the capacity of GPRN/NSCN official was inflated with great negativity. The NNPGs working Committee and also the GPRN/NSCN leadership had asked all members to refrain from speaking to media on the current political scenario. It was not a press interview only a mere telephonic conversation. Mr. H Chishi did not express prior request for a media interview either in person or through telephone. On the same day the 6th Sept. 2017, GPRN/ NSCN Kilonser Hokato Vusshe and H Chishi talked over the phone to clarify on the prejudiced, inflammatory and personal comments which Mr. H Chishi posted on the Sumi social media platform. There was never a word uttered on the current political situation. How and from where Mr. Chishi quoted Mr. Hokato Vusshe
An honourable solution
the cadres, across factions, view insurgency as a way of life. Any solution without the concurrence of the N.S.C.N. (K) will see large numbers of the cadres in the present factions under the cease-fire shift their loyalties to the N.S.C.N. (K). I’m sure that the Indian Intelligence Agencies are aware of the fact that the N.S.C.N. (K) has seen increasing public support due to the fact that some of the Factions are lolling in their Designated Camps and taxing the People of Nagaland beyond bearing; while the N.S.C.N. (K) is fighting in the jungles of India and Myanmar. They are being viewed by all as, “True Freedom Fighters”. Let us leave all talk of the “Shared Sovereignty”, “Uniqueness of the Nagas”, a “Separate Flag”, “Our own Passport”, our “Rights and Freedoms” under a “Separate Constitution” and a “Pan Naga Hoho” aside once and for all. These are just empty words; there is no such concept of “sharing Sovereignty”, Sovereignty is indivisible; every human race in the world is unique;a Flag is nothing more than a symbol to rally under; and a Naga Passport will not amount to a hill of beans in the larger scheme of things. Integration being ruled out categorically by The Government of India, a Constitution written by the I-M, a Socialist Organisation with roots in Moa Zedong’s Communist Philosophy will not be acceptable to the People of Nagaland. Rights and freedoms are useless unless you have a particular geographical territory to exercise them in. And why should any Naga in India agree to a Pan Naga Hoho? Nagas in Nagaland already have a corrupt Central Indian Government ruling over us and an even more corrupt State Government over us. Why should we agree to a third layer of Government which will be equally, if
not more corrupt, than the others? The same will apply, with differing levels of corruption, to the Nagas of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The stakeholders in this Game are Naga People everywhere; in Nagaland, M a n i p u r, A r u n a c h a l Pradesh, Assam and Myanmar. No one faction has The Mandate of All Naga People Everywhere. The only Mandate given by Nagas at any point of our History was the Mandate bestowed upon the N.N.C. led by Mr. Angami Zapfu Phizo by The Plebiscite of 1951; by those who voted on it. A Mandate can be bestowed and accepted or rejected by the recipient, but it cannot be hijacked. If any Faction, most notably the N.S.C.N. (I-M), claims to have The Mandate of The Naga People, a similar exercise, on the lines of The Plebiscite of 1951 must be carried out. So keeping in mind the interests of All Nagas Everywhere and the fact that no one faction has The Mandate of The Nagas, though all can claim The Mandate of some section of The Nagas, I put forward these proposals to All Nagas Everywhere. 1. Autonomous or Regional Councils should be formed in the Naga Inhabited Areas of Manipur, Assam and Ar unachal Pradesh. 2. Article 371A, 1(a) be extended to all Naga Inhabited Areas of Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. This will give them full rights over their Traditional Lands and all Resources therein. It will also give them the freedom to practise their customs and traditions, thereby freeing them from paying Income Taxes of any kind. 3. Clause(iv) should be amended from, “ownership and transfer of land and its resources, shall apply to the State of Nagaland unless the Legislative Assembly by a resolution so decides;” to, “ownership and transfer of
land and its resources, shall apply to the Nagas unless the Autonomous/Regional Council by a resolution so decides;” 4. Nagaland State should have a Bicameral Legislature based on the United States Congress. A Lower House comprised of Legislators from the present 60 Constituencies and an Upper House comprised of Legislators from The Recognised Tribes of Nagaland. The Legislators of the Upper House to be elected by Universal Adult Franchise from within their Tribes, with each Tribe, no matter how populous or small, having two Representatives each. The Legislators of the Upper House must have the Right/Power of Filibuster so that the Rights of the Minor Tribes may not be easily trampled on by those from the Major Tribes. 5. A fully Independent Judiciary for Nagaland. You can have all the laws in the world, but if they are not enforced by a strong and independent Judiciary, you may as well have no Laws. All appointments of Judges and Magistrates will be vetted by the Legislators, but apart from that, the actual Appointments, Promotions and Postings/ Transfers will be totally in the hands of the judicial System. 6. The Bureaucracy too must be protected from political interference. The present Laws are adequate for the job, it is the enforcement that is lacking. But with a strong Judiciary, the Bureaucrats will be protected. 7. The delicate part is coming to an accommodation for the Nagas of Myanmar. It is bad enough that we Nagas have been divided into different states under India; but add another section of our people under another Sovereign nation in the mix and we have a recipe for a serious headache. I believe the best we can do for the present is
to have The Governments of India and Myanmar sit down for talks with Representatives of Nagas from both Nations. Modalities can be discussed but, “Free Passage across the International Border for Trans-Border Naga Tribes is a must”. So Naga Tribes whose populations have been divided by the International Boundary Line must be allowed to travel across with reasonable restrictions. Essential Edible Commodities too must be permitted to flow unhampered by Custom Duties. The Governments of India and Myanmar could jointly identify and issue Documentation to these Tribesmen. I put forth these suggestions to All Nagas Everywhere so that they may provide a starting point to open discussions on what
when nothing was quoted on political matters is very surprising. While there is no question of infringing upon the freedom of the press, improper practice must be pointed out. Mr. H. Chishi has tarnished the good image of the media fraternity of Nagaland. He has brazenly attempted to create a rift among the six Naga National Political groups and sabotage the good will and understanding in Nagaland. As a journalist Mr. H. Chishi’s limited knowledge on the composition of NNPGs is unforgivable since Brigd. (Retd) Shingya and General Thinoselie’s NNC/FGN is an integral part of Six NNPGs Working Committee. The NNPGs leaders today have understood and accepted each other, under oath. They are inseparable comrades today and tomorrow in the interest of Nagas. They are ready and prepared to welcome other NNPG leaders as well. The leaders of six NNPGs and all national workers continue to respect the media and have the highest regard for the men and women in this noble profession. Unfortunately Mr. H Chishi has belittled himself and his profession by taking the names of officials and political institution, indulging in selfish journalism, aiming to create doubt, mistrust and confusion in the minds of Nagas. Mr. H Chishi must tender unconditional apology to two GPRN/NSCN leaders in particular and to six NNPGs in general. The same must be published in the media at the earliest. MIP, GPRN/NSCN.
we want and what we aspire to. If God grants us the Wisdom to develop Nagaland to its full potential, there will be a day when All Nagas of Manipur, Assam and Ar unachal Pradesh will desire Territorial Integration with present day Nagaland; and since nothing is impossible in God’s Eyes, there will even come a day when we join our Brothers across the International Border as a single Nation. But until we prove ourselves worthy of Governing ourselves Wisely and Justly in the Eyes of God and Man we must make do with what we have to the best of our ability. MAY GOD BLESS ALL NAGAS EVERYWHERE Kahuto Chishi Sumi Akukau, Hevishe Village, Dimapur, (Kahuto107@gmail.com)
Reader’s Post An appeal to EE, Peren division (Upgrading of 100 kV to 250 kV transformer in Ngwalwa sub-station.)
Sir,
The consumption of electricity by the consumer is increasing day by day and the 100 kV transformer installed in Ngwalwa Sub-Station seems too little at the present day. It is learnt that public have been requesting the concerned department verbally and in written to upgrade the installed 100 kV transformer to 250 kV but is it falling on deaf ears? Every year the transformer has to be repaired many times due to overloading. And for your information it takes days to even replace/repair a silly issue which can be completed in less than a day. The public of Ngwalwa is facing untold hardships especially the student community, small scale businesses and entrepreneurs, who requires electricity for their livelihood, due to the negligence of the Department. The department concern is not heeding to our grievances but then our complaints and grievances are taken as an insult to them personally. Therefore, the undersigned would like request you to kindly look in to the matter for upgrading 100 kV to 250 kV for the welfare of the public. Maciding Doson and Kiepeube Zehuny of Ngwalwa village

Search operations at the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters in Sirsa began amid heavy security cover.
4,000 paramilitary soldiers. More than 16 checkpoints have been set up to monitor activity and the district administration shut down mobile internet services for two days to thwart backlash from Dera members. Here is a closer look at everything that was discovered at the Dera headquarters during search operations: On Day 2 of the search, two secret tunnels were found inside the Dera campus. A window-shaped tunnel that connected Ram Rahim’s private residence — also known as Baba ki gufa — to the sadhvis’ resi-
dence. The ‘gufa’ is where the women were allegedly raped by Gurmeet ram Rahim. The other muddy path opened some 5 km away from the Dera premises. An illegal explosives factory used to manufacture fire crackers was found inside the Dera Sacha Sauda premises. The factory was immediately sealed by the police, and the explosives and fire-crackers were seized. A day before the search operations started, Dera’s official mouthpiece, the ‘Sach Kahoon’ newspaper carried a report saying that
NSUI accuses Chief Election Officer of being ‘partisan’ saying that the office was constrained by Lyngdoh Committee guidelines of conducting polls within 56 days”, the student group said in a statement. The group argued that the election office was bound by a bigger mandate of Lyngdoh Committee, which was to “conduct free and fair elections”. “It is obvious that our candidate has been highly disadvantaged due to this arbitrary decision of the CEO,” it said. The CEO was also targeted for being a partisan in favour of RSSaffiliated Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)-an arch opponent of NSUI.

G urugram , S ep 9 (IANS): A day after the conductor of school bus was arrested for the brutal murder of a seven-year old student, the principal of Ryan International School was suspended and the district administration ordered a probe by a panel that will give its report by Monday. The administration also ordered a security audit of all schools in Gurugram while police said they will file a detailed chargesheet in the case that has evoked nationwide concern. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar warned of stern action against the school authorities for any lapses. The CBSE has also formed a panel to inquire the case. Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar termed the murder an “unfortunate incident” and hoped that justice will be served. Local residents, including parents of children studying in the school, assembled outside the school on Saturday morning and held protests, demanding strict action against the school management. Pradhuman, a Class 2 student, was found dead on Friday by a school staffer in the washroom with his throat slit.

I believe that this practice should be examined forthwith and stopped. human remains were buried inside the campus premises. The Dera newspaper said the human skeletons were ‘donations’ as sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh encouraged followers to donate the remains for burial and prevent these from being immersed in rivers etc., causing pollution. The sect said such skeletons were buried inside the Sirsa headquarters and trees grown over them. Hundreds of pairs of shoes, designer clothing and caps, said to belong to the Dera chief, were also recovered.
N e w D e l h i , S ep 9 (IANS): In a first, Cardiological Society of India -- a non-profit organisation -- on Saturday announced the launch of an app that can help people suffering from heart disease with rapid and accurate information about the nearest health care centres. The app -- named “Heart Attack” -- would guide patients with real time information about the nearest hospital capable of immediate care. It will also show details of physician or cardiologists. “To help the patients with heart attack, CSI has launched first time a Heart Attack App. In addition, Delhi CSI is also launching a Heart Attack Registry, which will track these travel times and suggest improvements,” Harsh Vardhan, the Science and Technology Minister, said in a statement. “Heart attacks and cerebrovascular diseases are now number one killer in India,” added Sundeep Mishra, Professor at All India Institutes of Medical Science (AIIMS). While increased coronary care units and angioplasty in hospitals has helped during incidences of heart attacks, it has been noted that maximum benefit has happened when there is a systematic, organised network right from general physician, efficient ambulance service and advanced heart centres.

Sirsa, SEP 9 (AGENCIES): Secret tunnels. Plastic coins. Luxury cars. Explosives. These are just some of the things uncovered by security agencies and forensic officials as they comb through Dera Sacha Sauda’s 600-acre headquarters at Sirsa in Haryana. The sanitisation process began on Friday morning amid tight security in light of the Dera followers’ violent rampage that held Chandigarh hostage after their disgraced chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was sentenced to twenty years in jail for raping two women. The Dera’s sprawling headquarters include a township of its own, with schools, a sports village, a hospital, a shopping mall and a cinema hall. The property is also home to an ostentatious “7-star MSG resort” with replicas of Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Kremlin and Disney World inside. The scale of search operations is huge -- officials entered the premises with a security cover of commandos, police canines and

Other options include handing over management of Air India-owned hotels to provincial governments or to the tourism board, Raju said. A decision on Air India’s future is needed soon, because to remain a “vibrant” and competitive airline, it needs to take some calls on its business plan, which is limited by its weak finances, Raju said. Potential buyers also need to know what’s on the table before giving it “serious consideration,” he said. IndiGo said in June it was willing to buy AI’s international operations,

Mexico quake: Death toll rises to 61
Mexico City, SEP 9 (AGENCIES): The race to rescue those trapped in the rubble continues, more than 24 hours after a powerful earthquake struck off Mexico’s southern coast. The 8.1 magnitude quake left at least 61 people dead, according to officials. Another 200 people were injured, President Enrique Peña Nieto said, as he declared a national day of mourning. Meanwhile, the feared category one Hurricane Katia, which struck Veracruz on the east coast on Saturday, has been downgraded to a tropical storm. The US National Hurricane Center reported Katia had been rapidly weakening ever since making landfall, but local officials are worried the storm could still cause landslides and flooding. Rescue efforts following the earthquake, which struck late on Thursday, are focussing on the worst-hit states of Tabasco, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Tens of thousands of emergency packs, as well as 100 extra police officers and rescue dogs were sent to Juchitán, Oaxaca, said to be the worst affected town. The earthquake is the

most powerful anywhere in the world since September 2015, but its depth - 70km according to the US Geological Service - means that the shaking felt at the surface was less strong than it would have been for an equally powerful but shallower tremor. The president said 45 deaths had been reported in Oaxaca, 12 in Chiapas and four in Tabasco. The BBC’s Arturo Wallace says the affected region is the poorest and least developed part of Mexico and the full extent of the damage is yet to become clear.
At least one other person was killed in Guatemala, its president has said. The huge quake struck at 23:50 local time on Thursday (04:50 GMT Friday), shaking buildings and causing panic hundreds of miles away in the capital, Mexico City. The earthquake also triggered a tsunami warning and the evacuation of thousands of people in coastal communities in Chiapas. The warning was later lifted. Throughout Friday, the region was shaken with scores of aftershocks.
President Peña Nieto’s office said he would travel to Chiapas to survey the damage. Pope Francis, addressing an open air Mass on a visit to Colombia, said he was praying “for those who have lost their lives and their families”. The earthquake was more powerful than the 1985 tremor which hit close to Mexico City and caused thousands of deaths. Correspondents say the death toll appears to have been lower because it struck further away from highly populated areas.
Irma bears down on Florida; Five mn people told to flee coast Miami, Sep 9 (AGENCIES): Irma trained its sights on Florida and officials warned more than 5 million people that time was running out Friday and ordered them to evacuate ahead of the deadly hurricane as it followed a path that could take it from one end of the state to the other. By early evening, Irma was a slightly weakened Category 4 storm with winds of 155 mph (250 kph) and forecasters said it could be back up to Category 5 when it comes ashore near Key West on Sunday morning. Forecasters adjusted the storm’s potential track more toward the west coast of Florida, away from the Miami metropolitan area of 6 million people, meaning “a less costly, a less deadly storm,” University of Miami researcher Brian McNoldy said. Nevertheless, forecasters warned that its hurricane-force winds were so wide they could reach from coast to coast, testing the nation’s third-largest state, which has undergone rapid development and more

In one of the country’s largest evacuations, about 5.6 million people in Florida more than one-quarter of the state’s population were ordered to evacuate and another 540,000 were told to leave the Georgia coast. Authorities opened hundreds of shelters for people who did not leave. Hotels as far away as Atlanta filled up with evacuees.
US data breach: $70 bn lawsuit against Equifax Washington, Sep 9 (IANS): As nearly half of the US population fell victim to a massive cyber fraud at credit reporting agency Equifax, a Democratic Senator has called for a probe while a class-action lawsuit seeking up to $70 billion in damages has been filed against the company. Senator Tammy Baldwin from Wisconsin requested the Senate Commerce Committee to hold a hearing on the Equifax hack which exposed the sensitive personal data of 143 million US citizens, New York Post reported late on Friday. Hackers exploited a vulnerability in the company’s website application from mid-May through July and gained access to consumer information including names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and in some instances, driver’s license numbers, Equifax earlier said in a statement. The breach also included credit card numbers of approximately 209,000 consumers and certain dispute documents with personal identifying information of approximately 182,000 consumers.

bogota, SEP 9 (AGENCIES): Pope Francis has condemned “verbal and physical violence towards women” and called for “respect” while addressing large crowds on a visit to Colombia. The Argentine pontiff, the first Pope to visit the country in over three decades, said that the Bible celebrates women who are strong and influential. “How many women, in silence, have persevered alone?” he asked those gathered in the city of Villavicencio. The Pope is on a fiveday trip to show support for the Colombia peace process. He was repeatedly interrupted by applause as he told listeners at a huge openair mass on Friday that many communities “are still weighed down with patriarchal and chauvinistic customs”. The Pope has received a warm welcome in Colombia, a majority Roman Catholic country.
As the country prepares to reintegrate former members of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) back into society, the pontiff is urging reconciliation and forgiveness following decades of bloody civil war. The crowd in Villavicencio on Friday included thousands of victims of the fighting. During the homily, the pontiff beatified two priests killed during the conflict and warned those present that the peace process needed reconciliation in order to work. The 2016 peace deal was narrowly rejected at first in a referendum. The government and the Farc then agreed a deal several weeks later, which was submitted to Congress rather than a second popular vote. Since then, there have already been cases of murders of former Farc fighters. Many hope that the Pope can help bring the country together again.

Don Williams, Country’s ‘Gentle Giant’ dead at 78
D
on Williams, the Country Music Hall of Fame member whose imposing height and warm, reassuring voice earned him the nickname “Gentle Giant,” died Friday, September 8th, after a short illness. An internationally popular country star, Williams recorded dozens of hit songs, including “Tulsa Time,” “Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good” and “It Must Be Love.” He was 78. “In giving voice to songs like ‘Good Ole Boys Like Me,’ ‘Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good’ and ‘Amanda,’ Don Williams offered calm, beauty, and a sense of wistful peace that is in short supply these days,” Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Kyle Young said in a statement Friday. “His music will forever be a balm in troublesome times. Everyone who makes country music with grace, intelligence, and ageless intent will do so while standing on the shoulders of this gentle giant.” Bor n in Floydada, Texas, on May 27, 1939, Don Williams was raised in Portland, Texas, where he learned guitar from his
mother. Initially performing in Corpus Christi in a duo called Strangers Two with singer Lofton Kline, Williams and his partner met singer Susan Taylor and formed the folk-pop trio that would be called the Pozo-Seco Singers. Based in Nashville, the trio earned two Top 40 tunes, “I Can Make It With You” and “Look What You’ve Done,” in late 1966. After the group disbanded, Williams landed back in Texas to sell furniture in his father’s store before returning to Music City to embark on a solo career. “Cowboy” Jack Clement signed Williams as a songwriter to his Jack Music publishing company, where he recorded demos for
songwriter-producer Allen Reynolds, who later went on to helm projects for Crystal Gayle and Garth Brooks, among many others. In 1980, Williams, who had quickly gained an overseas following, was named Artist of the Decade by the readers of the London-based magazine Country Music People. That same year, he reached the pop Top 40 with the tender “I Believe in You,” Between 1974 and 1991, of the nearly 50 singles he released, first on Dot, then ABC/Dot – which would become MCA – then Capitol and finally RCA, all but three reached the Top Ten. In 1976, Williams became an Opry member, and was crowned CMA Male Vocalist of the Year in 1978,
with his version of Danny Flowers’ “Tulsa Time” earning CMA Single of the Year. In 1981, he joined Emmylou Harris on “If I Needed You,” a Top Five duet that would introduce the masses to the work of songwriter Townes Van Zandt. In the late Eighties, Williams quit touring after suffering back problems, but soon picked back up, with several hits for RCA until 1991’s “Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy” ended his streak. Williams was consistently an international ambassador of country music, earning a massive following in Europe, especially in the U.K. and Ireland, as well as Australia and Africa. In 2004, he released his My Heart to You LP for Sugar Hill Records; although he staged a 2006 farewell tour, he came out of retirement in October 2010, the same month he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. By that time, he had released more than 35 albums. His most recent studio album, Reflections, was released in 2014. He retired from touring for good two years later.

rillante-The Nagaland Piano Festival will be held at RCEMPA from September 28 to 30 with the heart to celebrate piano music, performance and education. Over a course of three exciting days there will be high level performance demonstration and teaching through the resources; platform and forum provided for local teachers and students to explore deeper understanding of piano studies; opportunity for all upcoming deserving pianists to compete at a state level competition. The study of the Piano, as an instrument, can be regarded as one the most developed and progressed of classical musical study in Nagaland. With the development of society and the support for ‘soft skills’ education, Nagaland’s pianists are an emerging workforce
in the industry. “There are more pianists in higher music education and professional occupation than any other instruments in Nagaland. Moreover, with Piano students accounting for at least 60% of the total enrolment body, I believe, we are poised to hold this festival and develop this area to a higher level. By doing so we encourage the next generation of pianists and provide a platform that has never been available in our State before,” says Khyochano Ngully, the brainchild of the festival who will also be the Festival Director. An educationist and a mentor to many musicians, she states that this festival is built with the future in mind where Nagaland can be a catalyst to building a thriving music community in the region. She is the Director of Music
Academy, Kohima and the Local Area Representative of Trinity College London. The competition round of the festival commenced with 80 video entries from pianists all over the state vying for a spot at the live auditions, which were downsized
categories of the competition (Category A - ages 8-14 and Category B - Ages 15 onwards); the semi finals round will be held on September 28 while the finals will be held on 30 where the winners will be announced. Weight lifter Pradeep books CWG berth
NEW DELHI, Sep 9 (PTI): Pradeep Singh on Saturday qualified for next year’s Commonwealth Games with a gold medal finish, even as 34 Indians created new records in the last five days of the Commonwealth Youth, Junior & Senior Weightlifting Championships at Gold Coast, Australia. On the final day of the competition, India bagged two yellow metals, one silver and two bronze to wrap up their successful campaign in style. Pradeep finished on the top of the podium after lifting 147kg in snatch and 195kg in clean & jerk for a total of 342kg in 105kg category. In the process, he also overhauled the national senior record in the snatch event. Gurdeep Singh (+105 kg) lifted an overall total of 371kg (171kg + 200kg) to settle for the bronze medal. He also created a new record in the snatch section.
Neymar and Julian Draxler behind lone striker Cavani, PSG’s star-studded attack looked crowded more often than free-flowing in the opening 30 minutes. Playing in a deeper role than he was accustomed to at Monaco, Mbappe looked somewhat subdued as Draxler missed a sitter and Cavani hit the post for the visitors. H o w e v e r, C av a n i showed his lethal touch in the 31st minute when he rounded Metz keeper Eiji Kawashima and fired PSG ahead with a clinical finish after he was put through by Neymar. The home side equalised out of the blue with their first meaningful move in the 37th minute as Emmanuel Riviere headed home from three metres after a pinpoint cross from the right by Mathieu Dossevi. Riviere missed a giltedged chance shortly after the break when he fired over an empty net and from there
on it all quickly went downhill for Metz. Assou-Ekotto was given his marching orders for cutting across Mbappe with a two-footed challenge after clearing the ball first and PSG’s acquisition restored his side’s lead shortly afterwards with a trademark piece of individual skill. Brazilian Neymar made it 3-1 with a crisp shot from 20 metres before Cavani grabbed his second of the night and seventh of the campaign. Substitute Lucas Moura bundled in the fifth in the dying minutes after yet another defence-splitting pass from Neymar. PSG could have had more but for some fine goalkeeping by Kawashima while livewire Neymar saw a thundering shot cannon off the crossbar. The result left PSG in the driving seat with a maximum 15 points from five games.

Kiryu becomes first Japanese to break 10-sec barrier in 100m
TOKYO, Sep 9 (Agencies): Yoshihide Kiryu on Saturday smashed a national 100-metre record in a time of 9.98 seconds to become the first Japanese to break the 10-second barrier. The 21-year-old, a member of Japan’s silver medal-winning men’s 4x100 relay team at the Rio Olympics, shattered the previous record by 0.02 secs at an intercollegiate meet in Fukui, central Japan. The Toyo University student started moderately in the final but raced past his rivals in top gear and finished first with a 1.8-metre tailwind. Kiryu screamed with joy after crossing the line and pointed to a display clock showing his time. “I’m thrilled to have done it in my last 100 race

with his domestic rivals, including Japan teen sensation Abdul Hakim Sani Brown, to achieve the national feat. Japan’s previous national record of 10.00 was set by Koji Ito in 1998. Ito’s time was the Asian record until 2007 when Nigerianborn Qatari Samuel Francis streaked over the line in 9.99.

METZ, Sep 9 (Agencies): Kylian Mbappe scored a superb goal on his debut for Paris St Germain and Edinson Cavani netted twice as the Ligue 1 leaders stretched their perfect start to five wins with a 5-1 rout of 10-man Metz in an entertaining clash on Friday. Having moved to PSG from champions Monaco on Aug 31 in a loan deal with the option of making it permanent at the end of the season for a reported fee of 180 million euros ($217 million), the 18-year old prodigy made an instant impact. Mbappe scored PSG’s second with a ferocious low strike from the edge of the penalty area after the home side had left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto harshly sent off early in the second half for a challenge on the French teenage sensation. Hosting U-17 WC will help football in India: Valderrama

tioned with a yellow card each. Earlier the guest of honor, minister for Roads & Bridges Dr. Neikiesalie Nicky Kire in his short address said that league matches are important for players in building up their skills. Many footballers in
the state compete in tournaments with a couple of week’s practice before the tournament, for that reason Dr. Nicky requested the players who are interested in the game of football to keep practicing throughout the year in order to get a better grip on the game. Observing the there are no Naga players representing big clubs, he pointed out that the players play only for tournament’s sake which in the long run will not lead the players anywhere. Nagaland sports policy give priority to six disciplines of which, football is one of them, therefore, it is the duty of youngsters to make a name for themselves, for the state and to bring laurels to the state by putting Nagaland on the map of football in the days to come, he added.
“Hosting this tournament will help the football in the country. It’s a very good start, Valderrama said during the promotion of Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s “Match for Unity” involving former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly scheduled on October 2. The former Colombian skipper who has represented his country in three World Cups (1990, 1994 and 1998) was attending a football workshop. Asked about Colombia’s U-17 team which will take part in the World Cup starting in India from October 6, Valderrama said: “Colombia has a good team. They will come to India and see the beautiful country with lot of passion for football.” Valderrama advised the budding footballers to enjoy the game and not force anything on them.

early stages, and burst into the penalty area, but the forward’s weak effort was scooped up by Ederson at his near post. The miss proved costly as City took the lead two minutes later, somewhat against the run of play. Kevin De Bruyne’s inch-perfect pass dissected the Liverpool defence to release Aguero and the Argentine rounded Simon
Mignolet to slot the ball home. Then came the game’s big talking point. Mane was released in behind the City defence but clattered into the on-rushing Ederson, catching the City ‘keeper on the jaw with a high boot. Referee Jon Moss didn’t hesitate in brandishing a red card as Ederson left the field on a stretcher.
Things got even worse for the visitors when Jesus, who minutes earlier had an effort ruled out for offside, headed home De Bruyne’s cross from close range as City doubled their advantage just before the break. Liverpool switched to a back three at the break with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming on for his debut, replacing Salah,
Nadal, Anderson in US Open final
Rafael Nadal and Kevin Anderson celebrate after winning their semi-finals match.
N e w Yo r k , S e p 9 (Agencies): Rafael Nadal was at his awe-inspiring best, as he recovered from a first-set wobble to crush Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 in the US Open semi-finals and move within reach of a 16th major title. Nadal struggled to handle Del Potro’s serve and huge forehand in the opening set before finding his stride to set up a title decider with South Africa’s Kevin Anderson on Sunday. The lanky Anderson dropped the first set against 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta before rolling over the top of the Spaniard to win in four, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Del Potro, who had played a total of nine sets in the two previous rounds as two-time winner Nadal cruised into the last four,
ran out of gas and looked toothless against the Spanish juggernaut. Nadal ended the 2009 champion’s ordeal with a splendid backhand passing shot on his first match point, four years after his last title at Flushing Meadows. “It’s been an amazing season for me and I’m so happy to get a chance to fight for another title after a couple of seasons with injury troubles,” said Nadal, who won a recordextending 10th French Open title in June. Meanwhile, Anderson, who stands at 2.04 metres tall, climbed into his player’s box to embrace his wife, brother and coach Neville Godwin after Carreno Busta’s forehand found the net to finish their nearly three-hour contest. “I don’t know if the
team hug is appropriate before the final but it felt like the right thing to do,” Anderson told the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 31-year-old, ranked 32 in the world, is the lowest-ranked major singles finalist since 38thranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached the 2008 Australian Open final. Anderson was out of sorts to begin with. He hit 14 unforced errors including a backhand that sailed long to hand the composed Carreno Busta a rare break to go up 4-3 in the first set. Carreno Busta closed it out but Anderson settled down after a see-sawing second set and delivered his 20th ace to take the third. Anderson’s power eventually wore down the 26-year-old Carreno Busta, who had not dropped a set in the tournament prior to the match.
Newly promoted Levante hold Real Madrid to draw
Madrid, Sep 9 (Agencies): Real Madrid stumbled to a second straight draw at its Santiago Bernabeu Stadium after being held 1-1 by Levante in the Spanish league on Saturday. Madrid lost striker Karim Benzema to a right-leg injury four days before its Champions League title defense starts against Cypriot team Apoel. Coach Zinedine Zidane will be without Marcelo for the next league match at Real Sociedad after the defender got a direct red card for kicking Jefferson Lerma in the head after they tumbled to the turf in the 89th. With Cristiano Ronaldo serving the third of a four-match suspension – for pushing a referee – Zidane gave starts to newcomer Theo Hernandez and midfielder Marcos Llorente. Newly promoted Levante caught Madrid with its guard down in the 12th minute on a routine throwin executed by Ivan Lopez, which concluded in a goal

Sergio Aguero gave City the lead in the 24th minute before Liverpool were reduced to 10 men after Mane’s high boot caught Ederson, who was stretchered from the field, in the jaw (37). Gabriel Jesus (45+6, 53) extended the hosts’ advantage either side of the break before substitute Leroy Sane rounded off the scoring with a late double (77, 90+1) as City inflicted Liverpool’s first defeat of the season - their biggest under Jurgen Klopp in all competitions. Pep Guardiola’s side had a second goal ruled out for offside after Aguero’s toe-poke was chalked off but they did get their third minutes later when Fer nandinho released Aguero, who unselfishly squared for Jesus to convert past Mignolet. Liverpool’s misery was compounded further in the 77th minute when Benjamin Mendy’s pass picked out Sane and the Germany international’s first-time finish flashed past Mignolet at his near post. Sane grabbed his second of the game in stoppage time with a superb strike that picked out the top corner to round of an excellent afternoon for Guardiola’s men and a miserable one for the visitors. Gareth Bale replaced Benzema in the 26th when Madrid’s striker grabbed his right leg and asked to be
substituted. Lucas Vazquez got the equalizer 10 minutes later, when he tapped in the rebound after Levante goalkeeper Raul Fernandez saved Sergio Ramos’ header. Bale was criticized by the home crowd after its 2-2 draw with Valencia last round and the Wales winger squandered four opportuni-
ties to put the hosts ahead in this game. Bale sent three headers wide and failed to beat Fernandez one-on-one. Toni Kroos almost grabbed the win for 10-man Madrid when he hit the post in stoppage time. Madrid, the defending Liga champion, has only one victory in the first three rounds.
