Sitharaman became the second woman to head the Defence Ministry after Indira Gandhi when she was Prime Minister. Power Minister Piyush Goyal, also promoted from Minister of State with independent charge to the Cabinet, got the railways portfolio, from which Suresh Prabhu was shifted to Commerce and Industry that was with Sitharaman. Prabhu had offered to quit after a major rail accident in Uttar Pradesh claimed 23 lives last month. The promoted ministers and the new faces were administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Nath Kovind at a 35-minute ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, attended among others by new Vice President M. Charges against me fabricated, says Ibobi Singh IMPHAL, SEP 3 (IANS): Former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Sunday termed the charges against him of misappropriating funds as “fabricated”. Ibobi, who is in Delhi, told IANS over the phone that the charges against him are fabricated and on returning to Imphal on Monday, he will speak on the issue after studying the matter. A probe into the financial “scams” in the Manipur Development Society to the tune of Rs 185 crore was one of the pre-election pledges by the BJP in Manipur and FIRs were lodged on Friday against Ibobi, three former chief secretaries and two officials. The Congress termed the registration of an FIR against Ibobi Singh and others a “political vendetta”. “It is very regrettable that the name of the former Chief Minister is thus tarnished. It smacks of a political vendetta,” party lawmaker N. Loken said on Sunday, but added that in course of the investigation, the whole truth shall be unearthed. He contended that the BJP-led government which assumed power on March 15 has not done anything for the welfare of the people except rename the schemes started by the Congress government.

Manipur govt seeks Centre’s help to settle border dispute with Nagaland Correspondent/Agencies

IMPHAL, SEP 3: Manipur government has written to the Centre seeking its help to resolve the protracted inter-state border dispute between Manipur and Nagaland with direct involvement of Survey of India. The border dispute between Tungjoy village of Senapati district, Manipur and Kezhakeno village of Phek district, Nagaland has been ongoing for decades. Highlighting the need for a proper boundary demarcation in order to resolve the border dispute, Manipur’s Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Dr. J. Suresh Babu in a letter to the MHA Joint Secretary (NE in-charge) Satyendra Garg on August 22 pointed out the need for a proper boundary demarcation between the neighbouring villages and erection of boundary pillars. According to Sangai Express, Dr. Babu also wrote a letter to his Nagaland counterpart a few days back with a proposal to make joint

efforts to resolve the border dispute, which had reportedly started sometime in the early 19th century and it remains unsettled till date. Taking serious note of the tense stand-off that broke out between Tungjoy and Kezhakeno in 2012, the two neighbouring States talked at the level of Chief Secretary and concerned Deputy Commissioners so as to avert such conflicts. Both the Government of Manipur and Nagaland Government directed the two neighbouring villages to maintain status quo until the border dispute was settled and also not to take up any development programme within the disputed area. The border dispute between at Tungjoy and Kezhakeno is not the only dispute that exists along the Manipur-Nagaland border. A dispute over traditional land ownership of Dzukuo valley, dispute between Manipur and Nagaland over Jessami in Ukhrul district is yet to be resolved.

Reshuffle reflects maximum govt, no governance: Cong

post of parliamentary secretaries was unconstitutional. It may be noted that the NTC had initially submitted a representation to Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya through the chief secretary on August 19, demanding the removal of the “unconstitutional” posts. NTC later issued a seven-day ultimatum on the Governor seeking immediate action. However, after Governor failed to respond positively to the demand, NTC went ahead and filed a PIL in the High Court. The matter was heard August 31 but the court posted the matter to September 11, 2017 for further order and hearing. Talking to Nagaland Post, NTC’s information and press secretary, Theja Therieh on Sunday said they had no choice but to seek legal redressal since the Governor chose to ignore their petition. He said it was best to allow the law to decide rather than volleying heated words through media. Therieh also said that the chief secretary was bound by duty to appraise the Governor of the matter since the NTC representa-

tion had been submitted through him. He also said that Naga MLAs should emulate the example of Mizo MLAs who resigned on August 30, 2017 by taking a moral stand in lieu of the Supreme Court order even if the Mizoram High Court had not given any ruling. When such unconstitutional posts were instituted, Therieh said executive cannot be expected to function and for which public was made to suffer. Besides, NTC, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee had also submitted a representation to the Governor in the last week of July demanding the removal of parliamentary secretaries and advisors. Nagaland Voluntary Consumer’s Organization on August 24 also urged upon the governor to remove the unconstitutional posts. E a r l i e r, G ove r n o r Acharya had told The New Indian Express (TNIE) that he would act on the SC judgment only if he received any grievance, in writing, from an organisation, individual etc. He said he would do, whatever was possible constitutionally, if approached.

NSCN (K) yet to decide on peace talks

Musharraf to face trial in Bhutto murder case

NEW DELHI, SEP 3 (IANS): Claiming that PM Narendra Modi does not trust his political colleagues, the Congress on Sunday said the cabinet reshuffle “reflects maximum government and no governance” and, by dropping ministers, the government has admitted its “gigantic failure”. Terming induction of new nine Ministers of State as “senior citizen’s club”, party spokesperson Manish Tewari said the average age of these ministers is 60.44 years when the “median age of India’s 1.24 billion people is about 27 years and the Prime Minister has been waxing eloquent about the youth of this country”. He also claimed that Modi seemed “strangely disconnected from the exercise”. “It seemed as if BJP President Amit Shah is the Prime Minister and not Modi. Never ever has the absence of the Prime Minister in a cabinet reshuffle process been more evident,” he said, adding that the real story is in the dropping and that is where the admission of the gigantic failure of this government comes.

Gov, CM extend Onam greetings DIMAPUR, SEP 3 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B. Acharya has extended greetings to the people of Nagaland particularly the Malayalee community living in the state, on the auspicious occasion of Onam. Nagaland Governor in his message said that Onam, the thanksgiving festival of the harvest season is celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm. “The mood of rejoicing is vividly captured in the rituals and festivities associated with the festival, transcending all barriers and uniting all in a common brotherhood”, Acharya added. The Governor further hoped that the festival will usher in the true spirit of unity, harmony and prosperity in the soci(Cont’d on p-7) ety.

NTC’s PIL on unconstitutional posts hang in mid-air; GHC to take call on Sept 11 Correspondent

KOHIMA, SEP 3 (NPN): All 26 parliamentary secretaries and nine advisors of Nagaland have another big battle ahead in the court as their fates hang in balance at the Gauhati High Court Kohima bench, which is going to hear the PIL filed by the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) on September 11 against their appointments. NTC had petitioned the Governor to remove all of them within seven days of receiving their submission, in the light of the July 26, 2017 landmark Supreme Court judgment in the PIL against appointment of parliamentary secretaries in Assam. The SC had ruled that states have no power to enact any law for appointment of parliamentary secretary and deemed that-- “The government of Assam had made the appointments through enactment of the Assam Parliamentary Secretaries (Appointment, Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004” as unconstitutional. Accordingly, the Sikkim High Court on August 25 had also declared that the

NEW DELHI, SEP 3 (AGENCIES): While it is being increasingly felt that any agreement between Government of India and NSCN (I-M) would not have substantial bearing in ending Naga insurgency, the Khaplang faction (NSCN-K) is yet to take a call on joining the peace process, The Asian Age report stated. A top Myanmar-based functionary of the banned NSCN-K on being contacted by The Asian Age said on condition of anonymity: “We do receive calls from several sections asking to return to peace saying with our involvement in the process no final settlement can be possible, we have however not taken any decision so far.” A cross-section of Naga social activists that The Asian Age spoke to also viewed the NSCN (K)’s involvement as well as that of the other factions as very important for a final solution to one of the world’s longest running insurgencies. Many Naga civic organisations like the Naga Mothers’ Association, Naga Hoho and the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation have been trying to get the NSCN (K) in-

volved in the talks process. Nagaland chief minister T.R. Zeliang, too, had requested that all “stakeholders” be taken into account before signing of the final agreement. Since 1999, the NSCN (I-M) and the government have been deliberating on a set of 33 demands which include demands like a separate official flag, a separate constitution, dual citizenship and a physical integration of all Naga-inhabited areas in Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, the report stated. While a separate constitution has been ruled out and the last demand is understood to have been put in the “backburner for now,” the framework for the agreement includes a concept of “shared sovereignty” and special constitutional privileges to safeguard the traditional rights of Nagas with due recognition of the uniqueness of their history. The Naga insurgency movement — with independence as the main demand-- is more than six decades old. Government figures say about 3,000 have died in the conflict till now, unofficial figures put the number at about 50,000.

I S L A M A BA D, S E P 3 (IANS): Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Sunday denied any involvement in the murder of former PM Benazir Bhutto but asserted that he will face trial in the case after he returns to the country. “I have been framed in the Benazir Bhutto murder case by way of political victimisation, while I had nothing to do with her untimely and tragic death,” Pervez Musharraf said in a statement that was cited by Xinhua news agency. An anti-terrorism court last week declared Musharraf as fugitive when it delivered the long-awaited judgement in the case. The court acquitted five suspects and jailed two senior police officers for 17 years each for negligence and removing evidence from the crime scene.

Novel cell death technique may be better than chemo Telecom Commission to decide on North East mobile towers project

LO N D O N, S E P 3 (AGENCIES): Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy are typically used to treat cancer, but they do not work for all patients with the disease. In a new study, scientists have discovered a cancer-killing technique that might be more effective than conventional cancer therapies. Researchers reveal how a process called caspase-independent cell death (CICD) frequently led to the complete eradication of colorectal cancer cells, which is not often the case with current cancer treatments. Study co-author Dr. Stephen Tait, of the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal Nature Cell Biology. Cancer remains one

of the biggest health burdens of our time. Last year, more than 1.6 million new cases were diagnosed in the United States alone, and almost 600,000 people died from the disease. Dr. Tait and team explain that the majority of current cancer therapies work by inducing apoptosis. Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death, or cell suicide, that helps to rid the body of abnormal or unnecessary cells by activating proteins called caspases. In cancer cells, however, apoptosis is often inactive. Reactivating apoptosis in cancer cells - through chemotherapy or immunotherapy, for example - is one way of killing them. But this is not always effective. Research has shown that cancer cells are sometimes able to evade treatment-induced apoptosis,

and some studies have suggested that apoptosis may even promote cancer growth. CICD, however, takes cancer killing one step further, and Dr. Tait and team suggest that it may be a more effective way to treat cancer than current therapies. In their study, the researchers explain that CICD kills cancer cells through a process called mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP), but it does so without releasing caspases, which are the proteins that are normally released through apoptosis. “Cells typically die following MOMP even in the absence of caspase activity,” the team explains. “This defines MOMP as a point of no return that commits a cell to die.” Importantly, when cancer cells die as a result

of CICD, they send signals to the immune system, prompting it to attack and destroy the cancer cells that managed to escape CICD. When Dr. Tait and team tested this technique on colorectal tumors grown in the laboratory, they found that it managed to kill almost all cancer cells. While further studies are needed to confirm the safety and efficacy of CICD, the researchers believe that it could lead to better treatments for a number of cancers. “In essence, this mechanism has the potential to dramatically improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer therapy and reduce unwanted toxicity,” said Dr. Stephen Tait “Taking into consideration our findings, we propose that engaging CICD as a means of anti-cancer therapy warrants further investigation,” he adds.

NEW DELHI, SEP 3 (PTI): The inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission is likely to consider this week a proposal for setting up mobile towers in unconnected villages of the North East, as per official sources. “Telecom connectivity plan for improving connectivity in the North East will be placed before Telecom Commission on September 8,” a government official, who did not wish to be named, told. The mobile towers will be installed under the Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for the North-Eastern Region (NER) which was approved by the Cabinet in September 2014. Under the plan, 8,621 villages out of 9,190 unconnected villages are to

be covered by installation of 6,673 mobile towers with total outlay of Rs 5,336.18 crore. The Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), which is handling the project, is likely to submit bid proposal for installing around 4,000 out of the 6,673 mobile towers. The state-run BSNL has been entrusted with task of installing network in tough terrain of Arunachal Pradesh and two districts of Assam -- Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. The state-run telecom firm has submitted bid received from Vihaan Networks Limited and HFCL for installing around 2,000 towers for Rs 1,648 crore. These two domestic telecom equipment firms had rolled out mobile net-

work project for BSNL in Left wing extremist areas across nine states. Rest of the project was to be rolled out with help of private telecom operators. After no show by private telecom players for the tender, the USOF finally received a bid from Bharti Airtel this year. Airtel has placed a bid for installing around 2,000 mobile towers for around Rs 1,660 crore. According to sources, the USOF has deferred plan to roll out mobile towers in Meghalaya for time being and will work on the project through separate tenders. The Telecom Commission has to take call on the price difference between the two bids and validity of single bid received from Bharti Airtel. K Y M C

WOKHA, SEP 3 (NPN): Wo k h a Tow n B a p t i s t Church (WTBC) youth ministry successfully conducted a debate competition on clean elections with enthusiastic participation from the youth here at WTBC mother church, Wokha Saturday. Out of the 17 youth fellowships under WTBC, 30 youth, both male and female, took to the stage and debated keenly and vigorously on the topic ‘Is

clean election possible in Nagaland?’. Listeners were simultaneously educated and entertained on the pros and cons of clean elections as participants forcefully and distinctly spelled out their points with youthful conviction and innocence. Some issues brought up during the course of the debate included money power, muscle power, clanism, one man one vote, underage voters, multiple entry in electoral rolls, use of election time as opportune time for extracting job promises

from candidates, and voters going for individual gains rather than the betterment of general welfare. The general conclusion arrived at was that clean elections can be held in Nagaland if one started the process of living and practicing truth beginning with oneself. Arhoni Jungio from Blue Hill Youth Fellowship was the adjudged winner of the debate followed by Rosy from GA/CC/ PWD Youth Fellowship and Bideno Humtsoe from Tsumang Youth Fellow-

ship in second and third places respectively. The competition was judged by WTBC associate paster Zurenthung Humtsoe, LBES youth secretary Jenibemo Kithan, BBC lecturer Penthungo Ngullie, Thungdemo Kyong and Yiben Humtsoe with Lawrence Ezung and Bhanchamo Odyuo as timekeepers. Before the start of the debate, WTBC youth director Y. Chumbenthung Murry elaborated on the debate topic and also set out the norms for the competition and participants. NST Sector Praise Band led the praise and worship hour while special numbers were presented by Thungyani Kikon and Chenithung Kithan and friends. WTBC associate pastor Abemo Jungio said invocation, Mhabeni Kikon said offertory, Vungoju Sector incharge Renbemo Tungoe led the gathering in general prayer, and WTBC associate pastor Rev. S. NPP bats for compensation to villagers affected by border fencing livelihood,” said Rakkam. According to the fact finding team, more than 80 families were living outside the border fencing and they have had the worst situation to face. “Most of them are BPL families without any facilities (MGNREGS, water, electricity, medical aids). They are also under constant threats from outside the border,” said the NPP leader. More than 100 acres of agricultural land is now under ‘No Man Zone’ mainly due to the border fencing not following guidelines leading to huge losses to the original inhabitants. “We urge upon both the government of Meghalaya and the Union Government of India to take serious note of this issue and to make enquiry of the affected families. They

should take measures to provide immediate relief and seek a long term solution to the issue,” urged Sangma. Sangma felt there was an immediate need for the government to revisit the construction of the fencing or pay compensation to the displaced families. “Most have moved to the Indian side but there are many that are still there and live like refugees,” he said. The NPP team of SGH will also form a committee to look into the matter and send another report to the state and central governments. “We strongly appeal to the Government of Meghalaya to act on this issue and without further delay and to bring to the knowledge of the central government,” said the release.

HPC(D) peace talks with Mizoram govt fizzle out Aizawl, Sep 3 (PTI): The proposed peace talks between Mizoram government and a faction of Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) did not materialise as the state government rejected the conditions put forward by it, a senior state government official said. “The HPC(D) faction led by Lalhmingthanga Sanate set pre-conditions like establishment of an autonomous district council under the sixth schedule of the Constitution in the Hmar community concentrated area and tripatite talks by inclusion of a senior official from the Centre,” he said. The state government rejected the conditions as its stance was that there should be no conditions for holding talks, he said. The talks were to be

held in August end. Peace parleys with the major faction led by H Zosangbera would soon resume and the next round of talks was likely to be the last official level talks as it would be elevated to the political level, he said. Sanate was the founder president of the HPC (D) when the outfit went underground, soon after the surrender of HPC cadres following the agreement inked with Mizoram government in July 1994. He was ousted as president by the Zosangbera faction after he signed Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Manipur government along with the Kuki militant groups allegedly without consulting other leaders including the outfit’s “Army Chief ” Lalropuia Famhoite.

School girl commits suicide in Assam; principal arrested G u wahat i , S e p 3 (Agencies): Police on Sunday arrested Sister Rency Sebastian, principal of St Mary’s Higher Secondary School in Naharkatiya, about 470 km from Guwahati, under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC, following the suicide of a Class VII girl student of the school five days ago. “We have arrested Sister Sebastian, principal of the St Marys’ Higher Secondary School on Sunday under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC in connection with the suicide of Namrata Sharma, a Class VII student of her school. She (Sister Rency) was located in Tinsukia and brought to Dibrugarh for production before a magistrate,” Dibrugarh SP Gautam Bora told The Indian Express over the telephone. Section 306 of the IPC relates to abetment of suicide and a person held guilty under this Section is liable to be punished with imprisonment up to ten years. Section 34 of the IPC on the other hand relates to a criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention. SP Bora said while

Namrata Sharma, a Class VII student of the school had gone missing on Tuesday afternoon after she had left school, her body was found floating in the Burhidehing river two days later. A suicide note she left behind said she decided to take her life after being assaulted by the principal and physically and mentally humiliated in front of other students in the school on Tuesday. Her abandoned school bag along with the ‘suicide note’ was found on the Gabharu Bridge on the Burhidehing at Sasoni, a village near Naharkatiya from where she hailed. Naharkatiya police station officer in-charge Prasanta Borah on the other hand said Namrata was beaten up by the Principal, and that too in front of other students, on Tuesday on allegations that she had scribbled some allegedly adverse remarks about a teacher. “What we have gathered is that she was physically assaulted and also humiliated in front of other students of her class by the Principal. While she hurt her eye during the physical assault by the Principal, another teacher humiliated her one

period later, which probably prompted her to take such a drastic step,” Borah said over the telephone. “My lovely mother and my father I love u very much. Please don’t be angry with me. Aji moi tiffin nai khua, akal eta guava (I have not eaten tiffin today, only one guava). Sr Rancy is very bad. She self me before all my friends,” the suicide note left behind by the 13-year old girl said. She had definitely tried to mean “slapped” by the word “self ”, Borah said. Namrata, who was good at studies as well as at music and dance, was reportedly first reprimanded by the principal for allegedly writing some “objectionable” comments about a particular lady teacher of the school. Established in 1958 as St Mary’s Convent, it is presently a higher secondary school affiliated to the Secondary Education Board, Assam. One of the oldest institutions set up by the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC), it is under the administrative control of Sacred Heart Province, Tinsukia, which in turn is part of the Diocese of Dibrugarh.

It said the action by North Korea was against the objective of the de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. “We call upon North Korea to refrain from such actions which adversely impact peace and stability in the region and beyond,” the statement said. “India also remains concerned about the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies which has adversely impacted India’s national security,” it added.

Sharp drop in BRD hospital deaths in 2017: UP govt data Luck n ow, S EP 3 (AGENCIES): Data on deaths of children compiled by the Uttar Pradesh government show a sharp drop in casualty figures in the B.R.D. Medical College in Gorakhpur this year compared to those in the last three years. According to the data compiled by the U.P. health department, made available to PTI, 1,317 children had died in the State-run facility so far this year. The number of deaths stood at 5,850 in 2014, 6,917 in 2015 and 6,121 in 2016, the department data said. The data showed the average daily deaths translating to 16 in 2014, 19 in 2015 and 17 in 2016 — as against 5.3 a day till August this year. “This [death figure] is much lower than that in the previous years,” Health Minister Sidharth Nath Singh said. Congress spokesperson Ashok Singh had charged the Uttar Pradesh government with failing to check

Sidharth Nath Singh the deaths in the B.R.D. Medical College. “The toll is alarmingly high and the government has failed to check the casualties,” he had said. Countering him, the Health Minister said, “good work” was being done by the Yogi Adityanath government in the State. “The reason [for the fall in death figures] is the good work done in the last five months. We have strengthened encephalitis treatment centres and taken various effective measures to check the dreaded disease so that more patients are treated at community health centre levels and do

not just rush to the B.R.D. Medical College,” Singh told PTI. According to B.R.D. Medical College records, 152 children died in January this year, 122 in February, 159 in March, 123 in April, 139 in May, 137 in June, 128 in July and 325 in August. Taking into account 32 deaths in the first two days of September, the total came to 1,317. A total of 51,018 children were admitted to the hospital in 2014, 61,295 in 2015 and 60,891 in 2016, according to the data put together by the department and its partner, PATH Foundation, a non-profit organisation. There were no admission figures for this year. Health department sources said, till August 31, admissions in district hospitals and encephalitis treatment centres had gone up to 62% as compared to B.R.D. hospital. “We have to bring this up to at least 80%. We are on the right path,” said an official.

Downside up

olitics in Nagaland has reached a nadir with the elected members showing no concern for the mess which remains unfixed while being more intent in cornering a slice of power in the never ending game of political musical chair. The fact that Nagaland has seen three chief ministers and four swearing-ins within a space of four years is enough to prove that the members of the 12th house have been involved with the political game of thrones by spending weeks in hotels either in Kaziranga or Dimapur or Kohima to ensure that the flocks stay together and do not get poached by the rival group. There have been four such instances of legislators of either group “taking refuge/shelter” in hotel(s) as guarantee for the leader of their group during 2014-2017. In 2015 by November the 12th NLA was transformed into a unique and a rare feature in parliamentary democracy when all the members were in the ruling party. People were left wondering what had gone wrong with their elected representatives who seemed to be perpetually afflicted with factionalism. All the while, the elected members continue to appeal with the factionalised underground groups to unite for peaceful solution to the protracted Naga political problem while they themselves remains divided over loafs and fishes of office. Presently the 12th NLA is comprised of a government whose political identity is still to be established as to which of the rival group has the locus standi to be the authentic NPF. In a lighter vein, the present government which has 47 (excluding the speaker) comprises of NPF (36) BJP (4) and independents (7). However, out of 36 only four survived the expulsion or suspension order(s) from the party president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü. The NPF has two presidents- one elected through party constitution and the other by the rebel legislators headed by chief minister T.R. Zeliang (himself expelled from the party). In addition, the party outside the government has filed a petition seeking the disqualification of almost all those rebel party legislators in the government. If the court does not prolong the hearings and if a timely ruling is given, the expulsions could invite a serious constitutional crisis. The fight between the party and the legislators is currently under trial in the high court and it is likely to take enough time that could outlast the remaining tenure of the present 12th NLA. That means the current crisis will continue and that itself will be another unique feature of the house. To make matters worse for the ruling party legislators, the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has filed a PIL in the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench for removal of all the 26 parliamentary secretaries and nine advisers in the government on the basis in the light of the judgment of the Supreme Court on July 26, 2017 to the PIL filed by one litigant in Assam. In the judgment the Supreme Court ruled that the government of Assam has no power to enact any law to create such constitutional posts. The government of Assam in 2005 had appointed parliamentary secretaries through The Assam Parliamentary Secretaries (Appointment, Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004. Nagaland’s parliamentary secretaries etc may also face the same fate since the basis over which they claim as safeguard is over an Act legislated by the state. It is not about politicians, like Nero, who fiddled while Rome burned; it is about neglect of their bounden duties to their people who elected them to deliver. The imbalanced has pushed important and pressing issues to the background, as the principle of democracy – serving the people- has been ignored.

DailyDevotion Pouring Out the Water of Satisfaction He would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord. —2 Samuel 23:16 What has been like “water from the well of Bethlehem” to you recently— love, friendship, or maybe some spiritual blessing (2 Samuel 23:16)? Have you taken whatever it may be, even at the risk of damaging your own soul, simply to satisfy yourself? If you have, then you cannot pour it out “to the Lord.” You can never set apart for God something that you desire for yourself to achieve your own satisfaction. If you try to satisfy yourself with a blessing from God, it will corrupt you. You must sacrifice it, pouring it out to God— something that your common sense says is an absurd waste. How can I pour out “to the Lord” natural love and spiritual blessings? There is only one way— I must make a determination in my mind to do so. There are certain things other people do that could never be received by someone who does not know God, because it is humanly impossible to repay them. As soon as I realize that something is too wonderful for me, that I am not worthy to receive it, and that it is not meant for a human being at all, I must pour it out “to the Lord.” Then these very things that have come to me will be poured out as “rivers of living water” all around me (John 7:38). And until I pour these things out to God, they actually endanger those I love, as well as myself, because they will be turned into lust. Yes, we can be lustful in things that are not sordid and vile. Even love must be transformed by being poured out “to the Lord.” If you have become bitter and sour, it is because when God gave you a blessing you hoarded it. Yet if you had poured it out to Him, you would have been the sweetest person on earth. If you are always keeping blessings to yourself and never learning to pour out anything “to the Lord,” other people will never have their vision of God expanded through you.

Gorakhpur reveals deep-rooted malaise

he tragedies shake the nation. The recent over 70 deaths of children in a Gorakhpur hospital was a shock. So were the diarrheal and dengue deaths in Kerala in June. Be it Kerala, UP or any other state the health care system is abysmal across the country. According to UNICEF, 22 percent of 11 million global deaths take place in India and most child deaths are attributed to just six largely preventable causes, pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, neonatal pneumonia, pre-term delivery and asphyxia. Most of these diseases spread like epidemic in different parts of the country with the onset of monsoon. The health ministry figures state that 13 children under the age of five succumb to diarrhea every hour in India. It means the drinking water quality is poor. The politics on health and blame game is not the solution. The health care remains abysmal despite one of the largest network of district hospitals. The funds alone are not the solution. According to government norms, urban areas are supposed to have a two-tier system with urban health centres for every one lakh

population, followed by general hospital, community health care centres and primary health care centres. The ministry of health and official figures of 2012 states that there were 1.48 lakh sub-centres at gram panchayat level. At that the shortfall was 35,762. It looks good but most of these are at best semi-functional with inadequate number of doctors Even in places where the infrastructure is in place, there is a shortfall in trained doctors and support staff and even the hospitals of AIIMS unfortunately suffer from it. Little data is available in India on hospital affected infections (HAI) as hospitals are not mandated to report incidences. However, according to a 2014 study, the World Health Organisation found figures from India “alarming, with an incidence rate varying from 11 to 83 per cent for different kinds of HAI”. A study from 2011 to 2012 at the J. P. Narayan Apex Trauma Centre at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi showed an infection rate of 10.6 per cent. Of those infected, 83 died - implying a mortality rate of 34.5 per cent.

So Gorakhpur and Kerala are not the aberrations. What they do is to highlight the grave problem and raise questions why the country has not been able to have a humane, empathetic and effective system. One reason possibly of the general apathy is the government facilities are availed by those who cannot afford treatShivaji ment at private facilities. The country talks of the poor but they mostly remain marginalized. Else the kind of deaths the BRD Hospital has seen during the past few years should have led to warfooting efforts. There were deaths of 557 children in 2012; 650 in 2013; 525 in 2014; 491 in 2015, 641 in 2016, and over 70 till now this year. Most of these were attributed to encephalitis. It was highlighted due the atrocious stoppage of oxygen supply, the August 207 deaths occurred. The Gorakhpur district magistrate’s report says such emergency supplies should not have been stopped. The hospital’s records reported in newspapers, including Mint, say that most children were not suffering from encephalitis. So that

indicates graver mismanagement. A former secretary of the ministry of health and family welfare, K Sujatha Rao, who spent close to 20 years in the health sector, recently has written systems recognise that when people are sick, they are equally vulnerable, regardless of means, age, Sarkar o r ge n d e r. Such a system would foster patientcentered health delivery and a culture of values such as honesty, integrity, and the pursuit of knowledge. As a society, we do not seem to give these issues much importance. But then it hurts when one recalls and reads about the poor tribal Manjhi carrying the dead body of his wife Amang back home on his frail shoulders as he could not afford an ambulance. And again when in the Guntur Medical College ICU, a ten-day-old infant dies of rat bites. What is disturbing is that such instances of indifference are rapidly becoming the norm. Such disregard for human life is a strong indictment on us as a people as much as it is on the government. Are private hospitals better? They are often not. Apart they are known, the

bigger the brand name more so, to fleece through various means and unnecessary tests, CT scans and MRIs. A one-night emergency stay for a simple ailment costs a minimum of around Rs 10,000 in such hospitals. It is in a country where over 98 percent of the people get measly wages of less than Rs 10,000 a month. Australian medical practitioner, Dr David Berger, who volunteered as a physician at a charitable hospital in the Himalayas, in June 2014, says that there is a lack of will to reform the evil practices in the Indian healthcare system. Writing for the British Medical Journal, Dr Berger highlights, “how kickbacks and bribes lubricate every part of the healthcare machinery”. Dr Berger’s ar ticle draws attention to the “unvirtuous circle” of donations and fees in private institutions generating debt burden, making doctors more open to corruption (an allegation that is being rampantly made in the case of officials of BRD Hospital in Gorakhpur). He also talks of unscrupulous doctors prescribing unnecessary drugs and specific brands at the pecuniary urging of the pharmaceutical companies

and order irrelevant tests for dodgy means. These too are known evils, Dr Berger says. In reality, the malaise begins with the admissions to medical colleges. In Madhya Pradesh, what VYAPAM has done is well-known. In private medical colleges, the degrees are virtually for sale, it has been repeatedly alleged. The price varies from Rs 30 lakh for MBBS to over a crore for post graduate degrees. If healthcare is run with the highest commercial interests, could what has happened in Gorakhpur, Kerala or elsewhere be ever prevented? If this remains the sine qua non, improvements despite government efforts would be difficult. Sujatha Rao says funds alone are not the solution. It requires organizational structures to be put in place and where like HIV or polio, it has been done it has helped create results faster. This shows that the system can function. The healthcare has to be treated as national emergency and the government must hold national dialogue for a panIndia system. The nation needs to understand what ails us because that alone would provide the opportunity to go forward.

Post-mortem

Two years after framework agreement and the road ahead

T

he framework agreement signed between Government of India (GoI) and NSCN/GPRN is now two years old. Yet the solution to the protracted Naga political question continues to elude everyone as an effort for peaceful settlement has so far failed and the negotiating parties are caught in a deadlock on how to work for a solution that will be honourable and acceptable for all the Nagas as well as for India. On the other hand the nature of the agreement and its possible outcome now becomes a matter of intense speculation and apprehension as a result of the alleged “secrecy” maintain by the parties who signed the agreement. Nevertheless if one has to comment based on what had been told by the negotiating parties, the framework agreement is a “one page document” (as told by RN Ravi chief interlocutor) that contain nothing about final settlement. The document is a “principle” where a mutual understanding is arrived at between the two parties and based on that understanding negotiation for the final settlement would be work out. Under the agreement GoI recognise the “sovereign right of the Nagas” and agrees to accept that “Nagas and India are two different and sovereign nation”, and in the interest of the both the nation a sort of “shared sovereignty” would be negotiated as part of final settlement. Acknowledging the “sovereign right of the Nagas” is an honest admission by India, although as of now it is just “in principle” and no formal declaration is yet done by GoI. This is, by far, a major departure on the part of India converting from its long standing policy of treating the Naga problem as an internal law and order problem to a political issue that needs to be address politically. This development is no less than an accomplishment achieved by both the parties, and this achievement needs to be acknowledged. The question before us today is can Nagas rally around this framework agreement and accept it as a foundation for final solution. Part of the difficulties in pushing forward the agreement is the emergence of new counter narrative. The formation of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) by six Naga political groups based in Nagaland back by Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC), and subsequently vouching for a separate solution for the state of Nagaland would be bound to change the direction of the whole narrative. This development come at the time when another rival group of NSCN, under new leadership, reaffirming its old position of “Naga sovereignty” as the only condition of any possible future dialogue. The framework agreement reflects a concession that a final settlement requires unity among the Nagas and engaging with all the stakeholders and making them part of the peace process. The hard reality is ever since the Shillong Accord controversy of 1975, Nagas, in our quest for independent Naga nation which is people’s based movement under NNC, was split into so many factions and for the next four decade different fictions were engage in a contest for legitimacy and supremacy, and defection of Nagas leaders from one group to another becomes common phenomenon. This factionalism becomes a poisonous heel in Nagas’ Achilles. Unless

this Nagas’ Achilles Heel is surmounted, it would not only elude us from final solution but we will continue to suffer from this very curse of factionalism. RN Ravi’s “inclusive solution” proposal during his recent Mission Nagaland where he acknowledged the complexity involved in Naga issue with “multiple stakeholders” and conceding the need of cooperation from all for the “success of peace process” had hit the bottom line about the existing enormous challenges that Naga face today. Failure on our part to unite and allowing our difference to prevail on us is permitting our enemy to preach subtle “unity message” to us which will have a consequence that will harm the cause of our struggle. Is these all an indication that India is slowly pulling us and the course of our national movement towards their direction to dictate us according to their own convenience, and that the option for us the Nagas to decide what is best for ourselves is waning away? Unless Nagas accept the seriousness of the situation and act upon it, very soon we will be force to concede to a kind of solution that India desire. Naga cannot effort to create our own situation whereby our fate would decide by the occupying power. Addressing the question of Nagas’ demand for sovereignty, however, remain the key issue for resolving the Indo-Naga conflict. And unless Naga leaders place this demand as a condition for any future talk, it is not expected to bring this seven decades long Naga struggle to any logical conclusion. Naga cannot just surrender our sovereignty, which is the very foundation of our Naga national movement and after a costly struggle for seventy years where more than one lakh Nagas laid down their lives for this cause. Although it remain to be seen how the concept of shared sovereignty as conceived in the framework agreement would fit in to Nagas’ demand for sovereignty, but perhaps this agreement, where an understanding had been reach between Nagas and India, can be a moment of opportunity where Nagas can seize the occasion to place our demand for sovereignty strongly. Nagas, today, may be too divided to have a unanimous view on the issue of resolving our political problem but developing a consensus and creating a common ground for finding solution would not be something impossible. If NSCN can achieved finding a common ground with India for working out solution which is momentous, can we Nagas also a create framework among ourselves through which we can come together and work together for a kind of solution which is acceptable and honourable for us. We had make friend with our enemy, is this the time for the Nagas to make friend among ourselves. If the best of the Nagas’ brain of our generation cannot work out on that consensus, then it would go down in history as a historic failure and future generation would blame this generation Nagas for failing to seize this opportune time for resolving our problem. Whether Nagas read the framework agreement as an opportunity or a hurdle is one thing, but any form of mismanagement of this given situation would turn the agreement into another political faultline that will divide the Nagas for many years to come. Is the NSCN (IM) afraid?

ray, Fast, Threaten. Pray, Fast, PREY. Pray, Fast, Spew Venom. Rev. Seksim Kasar, of the Council of Nagalim Churches (CNC) of the NSCN (IM) has the world’s toughest job. To begin with, the NSCN-IM will go to any extend to mislead , including carefully ‘planting’ news in the Times of India, that, it is fasting for its ‘sins’ thereby giving the impression that it has asked forgiveness from the Naga people and received one. And so it goes…Pray, Fast, deceive. It is interesting that the MIP, NSCN (IM) has taken the moral high ground accusing Khekiye K. Sema, IAS (Retd) of inciting civil war and shooting from the ACAUT’s shoulder. No, the retired government servant shot from his own hip and it’s the IM, which will possibly bring destruction and mayhem, not Khekiye K. Sema, not the ACAUT. My bosom friend Khekiye K. Sema has been simply expressing the sentiment of the Naga people, that, the IM should NOT conclude the Naga Talks without the other NNPGs, period. He has only pointed out your hypocrisy- you, who, fast and pray but cannot reconcile with your fellow factional leaders; you, who rant and pontificate about your sacrifices, but cannot see the sacrifices of others and I stand with him. You accuse us of perfidy, having accepted Honorarium in lakhs from the government. Remember, the HPC was constituted to investigate the syndicate system and all the extortions in Nagaland started by you, the IM, under the garb of national TAX. We were paid what was rightfully due to us for 6 months of our service. But what about the NSCN (IM)? Why don’t you tell the Naga people who your bed-fellows are? Have you

ever confessed during your ‘national prayer’ days, before the God you love to prostrate, that a certain PDS kingpin or the fuel adulteration kingpins are your bosom buddies as well? That you’re also directly involved in siphoning of rice, kerosene or sugar meant for your own people? Shouldn’t it prick your conscience that there’re no bridges or roads or government buildings in Nagaland which haven’t fallen prey to your greed? You mock at the Garage Union, Thela Union, DCCI, Autorickshaw Union, etc., for supporting the ACAUT. You’re a pharisaic lot! Should I tell you not to mock the hand that feeds you? When the IM forcibly taxes and receives Rs. 35, 000, 00/- (thirty-five lakhs) per year from the Garage Union, is it in your ‘national interest’ to mock these unions? Not only are you hypocrites, but ungrateful as well. Your ‘national sins’ will run into thousands of pages if the ‘sins’ are brought before a Court of Law, but do Pray and Fast hard that the GoI should wipe your slate clean to allow you to begin your life afresh. Corruption and the unresolved Naga political problem are two sides of the same coin. Unless, the Naga issue is resolved, corruption cannot be tackled because the politicians, the bureaucrats and all the ‘national workers’ are involved in the enterprise to loot the state. Even otherwise, the urgency to settle the Naga issue once and for all is paramount, through an inclusive solution, and this means bringing all the warring factions onboard. So, is it a NATIONAL crime to demand an INCLUSIVE SOLUTION? Is it ANTI-NAGA to demand peace and security of life? Can the IM define what ANTI-NAGA is in the

first place since according to it, the ACAUT, Thepfulhouvi Solo, Khekiye K. Sema, etc., are all anti-Nagas? Hint: Probably you have to first define what NAGA is in order to explain the ANTI of IT. What is the IM Afraid Of ? Instead of accusing Khekiye K. Sema of inciting civil war, can the IM guarantee the Naga people that there’ll be no retributions? Can the IM guarantee a time-frame for settlement of the Naga issue? Is it possible for Th. Muivah, the leader himself, to sit down with Nagas, Young and Old, and explain his present position or predicament if any? At the end, the question before everyone of us is; If the IM is not able to settle the Naga issue- an issue it thinks it’s only qualified to handle like the way some organizational presidents cling on to their chairs- how should Nagas judge the IM? Does the IM have an answer to all these? No, it doesn’t and for the first time in its existence, the NSCN (IM) is unsure of itself. Simply put, it cannot answer itself and it is AFRAID. It hasn’t helped that in the last 20 years, the IM has at best indulged in rhetoric, one after the other, and at worst, deception, so the question of going back to the people does not arise (the deception of pride). Maybe finding scapegoats in Khekiye K. Sema and the ACAUT is the better option…. Last, but not the least, the great NSCN (IM) should desist from throwing the name ‘Joel Rengma’ around as if I’m another of their ‘rubber stamps.’ I see no reason why they should forcibly place ‘Rengma’ after my name when I have never used this surname at any point in my life unless the intent is to insult or belittle my heritage. Sir,

Fallout of demonetisation

RBI said it is all but 1.4 per cent of the specified bank notes have come back into the banking sector post demonetisation. But the question remains unanswered whether black money figured out from the system. The opposition started commenting it a colossal failure. FM Arun Jaitley still felt it as positive impact. Deposit currency into bank does not mean they are legal tender. The aftermath effects are yet to be established. The windfall gain by RBI was never an objective. While it has not yielded immediate gain but led to increase of CASA (current account savings account) deposit. That enhanced liquidity position of the banks and utilised it to bring down lending rates. A million pieces of counterfeit currency notes have been eliminated in one stroke. The financial inclusion of government flagship programme Jan Dahan Accounts is now fulfilled. Lakhs of shell companies have been unearthed. A half crore of new tax payers has submitted ITR this financial year thereby collecting higher tax. Real estate price go down. The objective was to formalisation of economy, attack on black money, blow to terrorism, money laundering, a speed breaker for corruption and expand digitisation. The trade and business with Pakistan has come under scanner of NIA. The biggest ever tax reform GST comes into effect. The more is yet to come. Hope this will make India a stepping stone to world superpower in economy in the long run. Kamal Baruah, Rukminigaon, Guwahati

Protests continue over NEET petitioner’s death in Chennai

Political parties and pro-Tamil outfits stage state-wide protests over the suicide of a 17-year-old girl in Chennai.

Chennai, 3 (AGENCIES): Pro-Tamil outfits continued with their protests for the second day on Sunday over the suicide of a Dalit medical aspirant and a court petitioner against NEET, even as DMK vowed to keep up its fight against the entrance exam. Scores of activists of the ‘May 17 Movement’ outfit were detained when they attempted to lay siege to the BJP’s state headquarters in Chennai, police said. They raised slogans against the Central and state governments over the suicide of 17-yearold Anitha from Ariyalur, daughter of a daily wage

Swine flu death toll in Odisha rises to 36 Bhubaneswar, Sep 3 (IANS): With the death of another person on Sunday, the swine flu death toll in Odisha rose to 36. According to a health official, one person infected with H1N1 virus and undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospitals in Cuttack, succumbed on Sunday. ear ner who allegedly hanged herself at her house in her native village in that district on September 1, reportedly upset over not getting an MBBS seat. Security has been beefed up at the BJP office here. Pro-Dalit Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) also staged protests here and scores of its volunteers were detained. They also attempted to burn a poster of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Protests were also held at various locations in Tiruvallore, Kanniyakumari and Thiruvarur districts on this issue. Anitha was reportedly upset after it became

known that Tamil Nadu would not be exempted from the ambit of National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET). She had earlier moved the Supreme Court against NEET. Opposition DMK also targeted BJP and the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, faulting both for failing to ensure at least one year exemption for the state from NEET. DMK Working President M K Stalin, who late last night paid tributes to Anitha at her native village shortly ahead of the cremation, said his party had donated Rs 10 lakh to her family. Stalin, also Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly, told reporters at Ariyalur late last night that he has convened a meeting of various parties here tomorrow to discuss the NEET row. Interestingly, jailed AIADMK chief V K Sasikala’s brother V Divakaran backed the meeting, though the party’s Deputy General Secretary T T V Dhinakaran ruled out AIADMK’s participation. “I will not partici-

pate but those from our movement are going,” Divakaran told reporters at Puthukottai. He also slammed Health Minister C Vijayabaskar on the NEET issue. However, Divakaran’s nephew Dhinakaran r uled out AIADMK’s participation in tomorrow’s meeting convened by his party’s arch rival DMK. “How can we participate,”he told reporters at Perambalur. When pointed out at Divakaran’s statement, Dhinakaran indicated that it could be the former’s “personal view.” Meanwhile, vowing to keep the fight against NEET on, Stalin said his party would align with like-minded forces for this purpose. NEET had affected social justice in Tamil Nadu, he said. “DMK will align with like-minded forces to uphold the key Dravidian policy of social justice, retrieve the rights of the state, bring Education under the State List and ensure nobody else suffers Anitha’s fate in Tamil Nadu,” he said in a letter to his party men.

The organization also alleged that all road diversion at the bridges construction sites have been washed away by the monsoon rain. Many of the commuters were stranded and hundreds have been affected including business community. In this regard, the organization has appealed to the responsible department and contractors to accomplish the construction at the earliest.

Khattar defends handling of Dera violence NIIT announces 26th ‘Bhavishya Jyoti scholarship’ Chandigarh, SEP 3 (AGENCIES): Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who has been facing heat over his management of the Dera issue, on Sunday said the violence by the sect’s supporters could have turned much worse had the government not been alert. Khattar told reporters that the state government had taken steps after due consideration in compliance with the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. “Had the government had not been alert, the situation could have been much

worse,” he said in Karnal. The Haryana government had come under attack for allowing a huge build up of Dera Sacha Sauda followers in Panchkula. Violence broke out there after Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s conviction in rape cases,

leaving 35 people dead. Six others died in incidents of violence in Sirsa. Ram Rahim was later sentenced to 20 years in prison. On August 30, Khattar, had ruled out his resignation after meeting BJP chief Amit Shah in Delhi, saying his government had acted with “restraint” in handling the situation. Khattar also told reporters that he would contest the next election from Karnal as the people of the constituency have accorded him a lot of respect. At the same time, he added he would accept

whatever the party decides in this regard. Khattar (63) is a firsttime legislator from Karnal. He became the chief minister when BJP came to power for the first time on its own in Haryana in October 2014. He said the Haryana government would also organise a programme on the completion of three years of its tenure. “The programme would be organised on a grand scale between October 26 and November 1. The venue would be decided later by the committee concerned,” he said.

and comes at a time when several experts and even policymakers have been talking about the need for consolidation in the banking sector, especially among state-owned banks. Asked how soon there could be consolidation, the official said: “It will be a few months as it is not a simple process.” The merger of associate banks with SBI was slightly easy because they were subsidiary of the largest lender, the official added. Earlier this year, the government had approved the merger of SBI’s five associate banks with the parent. In March, the Cabinet also approved the merger of Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) with SBI. Following this, the number of public sector banks declined to 21 from 27.

Another reason for uptick in advanced booking is the ‘Zero Cancellation’ feature, which is finding favour amongst many customers resulting in 15 per cent rise in bookings for peak season,” MakeMyTrip COO-Online Mohit Gupta told PTI here. Kolkata-Delhi and Delhi-Hyderabad are few of the most travelled routes with more than 100 per cent growth during this festive season as compared to last year, it added. According to the trend, average fares for the top 20 sectors on domestic flights have increased by 10 per cent this time from last year. In some of the major sectors, the fare has increased by up to 30 per cent, with festivities still one month away, it added.

Last month, the Union Cabinet decided to set up the alternative mechanism to oversee proposals for expeditious consolidation of public sector banks (PSBs) so as to create larger and stronger lenders. The proposals received from banks for inprinciple approval to formulate schemes of amalgamation will be placed before the panel. To fast-track consolidation, the government has exempted mergers of nationalised banks from seeking fair trade watchdog CCI’s approval. This exemption will be applicable for ten years

They will let us know which machines they wish to configure for Rs 200, which will require physical visits to ATMs. However, the new notes are still to be provided to us by the respective banks so that the testing can begin,” Anand Garollu, General Manager (Services), NCR Corporation said. We are looking to roll this out as quickly as possible.”

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI): The finance ministry has written letters to all heads of PSU lenders informing them the government’s decision to set up a ministerial panel to facilitate consolidation in the public banking space. A formal communication to CEOs of the banks from the Department of Financial Services last week has set in motion the consolidation process, a senior finance ministry official said. The government has been nudging the stateowned lenders to go for merger so that there can be fewer and stronger banks. The ministry wants banks to undertake an internal exercise for the best match and come up with the merger idea for the alternative mechanism (AM) set up for the purpose. The banks should

Ravi B Goyal, Chairman and Managing Director, AGS Transact Technologies Limited, which claims to have an installed base of 60,000 ATMs, told IANS, “The process of recalibration will begin once we receive the directive from the RBI. The size of the new notes is different from the existing ones and so, once we receive the new notes, we will have to understand its dimensions and accordingly reconfigure the ATM cassettes. Next, we will have to check if the supply of notes is good enough to run the cassettes at full capacity.” “The entire process of recalibration can be completed within 90 days without affecting the regular functionality of ATMs to a large extent. In fact, the ATMs will continue to be fully operational during recalibration and will continue to supply Rs 100, Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denominations,” he said. New Delhi, Sep 3 (IANS): While the RBI launched the 200-rupee note a week ago, it may take up to three months for ATMs to start dispensing the new denomination currency as it will involve a huge exercise of recalibration. Some banks have even asked the ATM companies to begin testing the new note for recalibration of the machines, though they have not got supplies of the new currency. Only last year, the banks were involved in recalibration of ATM machines after the demonetisation of highvalue currency notes in November. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) did issue a statement saying that the supply of the new Rs 200 notes would soon be ramped up, but has not given any time-frame by which it will be available in adequate numbers. ATM manufacturing companies said that they have not received any directive from the RBI regarding the recalibration of ATMs for the new Rs 200 note. They disclosed that some banks have at an informal level have asked them to start testing of the new note, since it is of a different size. Rajan also told the newspaper in an interview that the demonetization had a disruptive impact on the economy. “I think all said and done, it would be fair to say the intent was good. But certainly at this point, one still cannot in any way say it has been an economic success. But again, as I said, only time will tell,” he was quoted as saying.

movement against the US dollar would be keenly watched by investors, as earnings of export-oriented sectors like IT and pharma might be impacted due to a strengthening rupee. “On year-to-date basis, the Indian rupee has appreciated by 7.2 per cent. This will benefit the import segment and lower inflation. However export-oriented sectors like software, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and textiles will suffer,” Anindya Banerjee, Deputy Vice President for Currency and Interest Rates with Kotak Securities, told IANS. “This will impact their guidance, earnings per share and subsequently impact their scrip prices.” However, on a weekly basis, the Indian rupee closed flat at 64.02-03 to a US dollar. According to Hariprasad M.P., Senior Vice President and Head Treasury at Centrum Direct, last week saw the US dollar-Indian rupee pair moving in a narrow range (63.90 to 64.20) with an appreciation bias for the Indian rupee.

Indians returned most of the estimated 15.4 trillion rupees ($242 billion) in highcurrency bills removed from circulation last year, the RBI said in its annual report on Wednesday. Modi had been intending to make it difficult for hoarders of undeclared wealth to exchange their undeclared cash for legal tender, but it seems most of it was returned by individuals, implying there was a very small amount of unaccounted money held in cash or evaders had managed to legalise their unaccounted money. While Modi`s drive to unearth unaccounted wealth did not deliver the desired result, it hurt consumer demand in a country where most people are paid in, and buy what they need with, cash. India`s economy lost further steam in the quarter to June as growth slid to 5.7 percent, its lowest level in more than three years and a marked slowdown from a 6.1 percent growth in the January-March period.

Mumbai, Sep 3 (IANS): Global cues, along with the government`s measures to revive growth and tackle the non-performing assets (NPAs) issue are expected to determine the way forward for the Indian equity markets during the upcoming week. Besides, the rupee`s movement against the US dollar and the direction of foreign funds flow will also have a major bearing on the trajectory of the equity indices. “Equity markets are expected to remain rangebound next week and driven mostly by stock-specific action. However, investors will take cues from global developments, especially the geo-political situation,” Devendra Nevgi, Chief Executive of Zyfin Advisors, told IANS. “On the domestic front, reform developments over the NPA issues and growth concerns after the subdued GDP numbers will be eyed. Nevertheless, domestic flows are expected to continue despite negative macros.” Apart from global cues, Indian currency`s

Making disclosure on demonetisation decision taken by the government during his Governership of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in his latest book - I do what I do – Raghuram Rajan said that he was not in favour of note ban as short term economic costs associated with such a disruptive decision would exceed long term benefits. The former Governor of the RBI writes that the Central Bank wasn’t asked to take such a decision at any point during his tenure at the Reserve Bank. Rajan’s book gives a wonderful insight in form of various accounts reflecting his very unstable relationship with the present government. He also wrote that he was asked by the government in February 2016 for his view on demonetisation, which he gave orally. Although there might be longterm benefits, he felt the likely short-term economic costs would outweigh them. He didn’t elaborate on the short-term costs or the pos-

People want cooperation, not confrontation: Xi Jinping

Xiamen (China), Sep 3 (IANS): Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday said people all are for peace and cooperation, not conflict and confrontation. Xi also said the threat of terrorism has cast a “dark shadow” on the world but stressed that “resolving geopolitical hotspot issues was the need of the hour”. “People around the world want peace and cooperation, not conflict or confrontation,” he said in his address at the opening ceremony of the BRICS Business Forum as the annual summit of the fivemember grouping, comprising Brazil, India, Russia, China and South Africa began here inthis southeastern Chinese city. “Incessant conflicts in some parts of the world and hotspot issues are opposing challenges to world peace. The intertwined threat of terrorism and lack of cyber security among others have cast dark shadow on the world,” he said. “I am convinced that as long as we take a holistic

Modi reaches China to attend BRICS Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Sunday to attend the 9th BRICS Summit in the Chinese southeastern city Xiamen. He is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the three-day

event. Their meeting will be keenly watched after the resolution of the Doklam border row, which pitted the armies of the two countries against each other for over two months. This will be the second bilateral meeting between the two leaders this year. The last one took place during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit. They met informally at the G20 Summit in Germany in July amid the Doklam crisis. Besides, Modi is ex-

pected to meet Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Michael Temer of Brazil. Also attending the event will be South African President Jacob Zuma. The Indian leader will address the BRICS leaders’ dialogue with ‘BRICS Business Council’ meeting. He will take part in an event of the ‘Emerging Markets and Developing Countries’ Dialogue’ on Tuesday morning. After the BRICS Summit, Modi will travel to Myanmar.

Iran has warned 2 US spy aircraft: Official Tehran, Sep 3 (IANS): Iran’s air defence base has in the last six months sent two stern warnings to US spy aircraft which approached Iranian airspace, a defence official said on Sunday. “We warned a U2 reconnaissance aircraft on March 21 and a US drone on August 26,” Iran’s Arabic language TV station alAlam’s website quoted the country’s Chief of Air Defence Farzad Esmaili as saying. He did not mention the location. Esmaili said “we do not allow such rabid aircraft to enter our territory and if necessary, we will not hesitate to destroy them”. Iran has repeatedly announced such activities over the past years to demonstrate the capabilities of the country’s armed forces. Meanwhile, Iran has tested its home-grown air defence system, designed to match the Russian S-300, state broadcaster IRIB reported. “The system is made completely in Iran and some of its parts are different from the S-300. All of its sub-systems have been completed and its missile tests have been conducted,” Xinhua news agency quoted Esmaili as saying.

North Korea nuclear test prompts global condemnation London, SEP 3 (AGENCIES): North Korea’s biggest nuclear test to date was condemned around the world on Sunday, with U.S. President Donald Trump saying “appeasement” would not work as the authorities in Pyongyang “only understand one thing.” The explosion of what North Korea said was an advanced hydrogen bomb came just days after it fired a missile over Japan and a few hours after Trump spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by phone about the “escalating” nuclear crisis. Trump, who said after last week’s missile launch that talking to Pyongyang “is not the answer,” tweeted that Sunday’s test showed North Korea’s “words and actions continue to be very hostile and dangerous to the United States.” China had tried but failed to solve the problem, he said, while what he called South Korea’s “talk of appeasement” would not work as “they [the North Koreans] only understand one thing!” Russia struck a more

cautious tone. “In the emerging conditions it is absolutely essential to keep cool, refrain from any actions that could lead to a further escalation of tensions,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said, adding that North Korea risked “serious consequences.” Moscow said talks were the only way to resolve the crisis. Later on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin was set to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in China. China urged North Korea to stop “wrong” actions and said it would fully

enforce U.N. resolutions on the country. Britain’s Foreign Minister Boris Johnson called the nuclear test “reckless” and a “provocation.” “They seem to be moving closer towards a hydrogen bomb which, if fitted to a successful missile, would unquestionably present a new order of threat,” he told Sky news, adding that there were no palatable military solutions. Russia accuses US of illegally seizing its diplomatic properties Moscow, Sep 3 (IANS): Russia on Sunday accused the US of seizing its diplomatic properties and warned Washington that its actions would lead to an even greater deterioration in relations between the two powers. A statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry said the US authorities had illegally seized the Russian consulate in San Francisco and the trade office in Washington which, it said, were Russian properties and enjoyed diplomatic immunity, Efe news reported. American security services had searched both buildings on Saturday after giving Moscow a 48-hour notice to abandon the premises. The statement accused US intelligence of taking over the buildings with backing by armed police, adding that Russia considered this an “openly hostile act and a flagrant violation of international law, including the Vienna Convention on diplo-

matic and consular relations”. The ministry termed the move “outrageous” and said it followed on the heels of the ‘de facto’ expropriation of two Russian compounds in Washington and New York that took place last December. It also urged US authorities to “come to their senses” and immediately return the Russian diplomatic offices. “Otherwise, the responsibility of continuing the degradation of relations between our na-

tions, on which international stability and security are largely dependent, will fall on the US,” it concluded. The Foreign Ministry on Saturday had sent a protest note to the deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Moscow, Anthony Godfrey, that called the search of Russia’s trade mission office in Washington an “unprecedented aggressive action”. On Friday, the US government had decreed the closure of the San Francisco consulate and the trade offices in Washington and New York as a response to Moscow ordering a reduction in the US diplomatic mission to Russia in July. The measure by the Kremlin, in turn, came as retaliation for a sanctions package passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority in the US Congress that was imposed as punishment for Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election.

IS clashes with Syrian regime forces kill 150 BEIRUT, SEP 3 (AGENCIES): Fierce clashes between the Islamic State group and pro-regime forces in central Syria have left over 150 fighters dead in 24 hours, mostly jihadists, a monitor said Sunday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 120 IS fighters “were killed in clashes in and around the town of Uqayribat in the eastern Hama countryside... along with at least 35 regime troops and loyalist militiamen.” The town is the jihadist group’s last bastion in the central province apart from a handful of small villages. Pro-government forces seized Uqayribat on Friday night, but IS responded

with a counter-offensive on Saturday that left it in control of most of the town, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said. An intense barrage of artillery fire and Syrian and Russian air strikes on jihadist positions allowed pro-regime forces on Sunday morning to push the jihadists back out of the town and advance on villages to the west that remain under IS control. IS has controlled Uqayribat since 2014, using it to launch attacks on regimeheld areas and a strategically vital road Abdel Rahman described as “the only lifeline for the regime between Aleppo and central and southern Syria”.

Ne w Yo r k , S ep 3 (IANS): Locky ransomware’s re-emergence with new email distribution campaign has been touted as one of the largest malware campaigns in the latter half of 2017, the media reported. The ransomware, once considered almost defunct, sent over 23 million emails with the malware to the US workforce in just 24 hours on August 28, zdnet.com

Researchers at US-based cybersecurity firm AppRiver, who discovered the new campaign say it represents “one of the largest malware campaigns seen in the latter half of 2017”. According to the report, the malware payload was hidden in a zip file containing a Visual Basic Script (VBS) file, which

once clicked, will download the latest version of Locky ransomware -- the recently spotted Lukitus variant -- and encrypts all the files on the infected computer. Victims are presented with a ransom note demanding 0.5 bitcoin ($2,300) in order to pay for “special software” in the form of a “Locky decryptor” in order to get their files back.

Sonakshi urges Brad Pitt, Jolie ‘consciously re-coupling’ ‘Bad Boys 3’ has a new fans to clean writer; producer hopeful Mumbai T beaches

B

ollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has urged her fans and followers to clean up the beaches here. Sonakshi on Sunday took to Twitter, where she shared a poster of the event, which read: “Join the citizens... Gandhi Statue, Juhu beach, September 6.” The “Dabangg” actress, 30, tweeted: “Hope there comes a day when we don’t mess it up to begin with! Come on guys, join in to Free the beach!” This is not the first time a Bollywood personality has campaigned for the beach clean-up. Last month, actress Dia Mirza, along with her producer-husband Sahil Sangha, was seen as part of the initiative. On the acting front, Sonakshi will soon be seen in the thriller film “Ittefaq”, directed by Abhay Chopra. The film is an adaptation of the 1969 film by the same name. The film will also star Sidharth Malhotra and Akshaye Khanna.

F

ormer star couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are “consciously re-coupling” after intense rehab and spiritual counselling, claims biographer Ian Halperin. Seven weeks ago, the actors were spotted outside a modest three-bedroom house on the flats of Beverly Hills. The pair stood face-to-face for the first time in 10 months. “Brad took the first step forward. Then they collapsed into each other’s

arms,” said Halperin, reports dailymail.co.uk. The stars went inside the home of a friend for an emotional conversation. “There were a lot of tears,” Halperin said. “Nothing was left on the table. They had it out, right there and then in this very modest house. In that moment they decided to make a fresh start. It was a ‘come to Jesus meeting’ that marked the beginning of a new phase in their relationship,” said the bi-

ographer. When the couple split last September amid toxic allegations of drink, drugs and a mid-air altercation between Pitt and their teenage son Maddox -- which resulted in brief investigations by the FBI and social services -- the rift in their relationship seemed as final as it was sudden. But the “tough love” meeting arranged by the couple’s divorce negotiator gave them a chance to talk in the presence of a “referee” who helped them cut through the acrimony and recrimination. Their conclusion was that they still loved each other and wanted to try again. According to dailymail.co.uk, they are working to “consciously re-couple” and have undergone intensive rehab and spiritual counselling sessions in an effort to start anew.

he world has pretty much given up hope on Bad Boys 3 actually happening but producer Jerry Bruckheimer is still hopeful that the action duo will return to the silver screens. Speaking to Yahoo, Bruckheimer revealed that the film has a new writer already working on the script. The original release date for Bad Boys 3 or Bad Boys For Life was 2017, however, writer/director Joe Carnahan left the project earlier this year. “Well, we’ve been developing it for I don’t know how many years now and we had a period of time where it got pretty close and then it drifted away a little bit”, Bruckheimer said. “Hopefully it will drift back again. We have a new writer on it who’s working

on it right now, so that gives me encouragement.” Will Smith and Martin Lawrence starred in the original action-comedy film in 1995, and reprised their roles as Detectives Marcus Barnett and Mike Lowrey eight years later for its se-

quel, Bad Boys II. While the long-awaited third instalment of the series has been in the pipeline since 2008, it has now been reported that Smith and Lawrence will also star in a fourth Bad Boys film in 2019.

tion in the coming months. ‘The Crow Reborn’ is set to be an origin story in relation to the 1994 original, and stay faithful to the James O’Barr graphic novel. Jack Huston, Norman Reedus, Luke Evans and Tom Hiddleston are among the actors linked to playing the lead role over the years. Telling the story of a murdered rock star who is resurrected in order to hunt down his killers, ‘The Crow’ inspired the sequel ‘The Crow: City Of Angels’ in 1996, starring Vincent Perez as the lead character Eric Draven. The son of martial arts and film legend Bruce Lee and teacher Linda Lee Cadwell, the original film’s lead Brandon Lee died on set while filming ‘The Crow’ in 1993, due to an accident with a prop gun. The film was completed posthumously with body doubles and special effects.

new re-boot of cult classic movie ‘The Crow’ now seems to be one huge step closer to becoming a reality, with a major studio now reportedly on board to release it. The film has been in discussion for quite some time, with it most recently reported that ‘Justice League’ actor Jason Momoa, director Corin Hardy and producer Ed Pressman had all met to secure progress on the movie. Pressman was involved in the 1994 original, and it was reported that they’d taken the project to Relativity Media. Now, Variety reports that Sony have signed up to take on the distribution rights to ‘The Crow Reborn’. This has sparked speculation that the movie could en- ter produc-

Federer sprints into fourth round

N e w Yo r k , S e p 3 (Agencies): After two marathons, Roger Federer sprinted past Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3 6-3 7-5 to reach the US Open fourth round on Saturday. It has been a far different start to Flushing Meadows than Wimbledon, where an economical Federer stormed to his 19th grand slam title without dropping a set. In his opening two matches at the US Open, a misfiring Federer had been forced to five sets, first by American Frances Tiafoe then Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny. After being broken eight times and committing a whopping 124 unforced errors in those first two contests, a focused Federer tightened up his game against Lopez, operating with his hallmark efficiency. “I struggled the first couple of rounds but I think that had something to do with my opponents. They came out and played very well,” Federer said in his post-match interview on court. “Once I got off to a slow start and once my opponent fought back really hard and today it almost happened again in the third set but I think I

Pacquiao wants Horn rematch in the Philippines

MANILA, Sep 3 (Agencies): Manny Pacquiao said on Sunday he was still wanted a rematch with Jeff Horn after the Filipino boxing hero pulled out of their scheduled bout in Australia later his year. Queensland’s premier, whose state government was the financial backer of a November 12 fight, announced on Friday that Pacquiao “cannot return to the ring” due to other commitments. “It will not push through there in Australia. But we are bringing the fight here in the Philippines,” Pacquiao said on radio station DZBB, adding negotiations were ongoing. “This will be good for our country’s tourism.” Pacquiao, 38, had initially called for a rematch after losing his World Boxing Organization welterweight title to the 29-year-old on points Horn in a major upset in Brisbane on July 2. Pacquiao, who has won world titles in an unprecedented eight weight divisions, had demanded a review of the bout but the WBO declared Horn the clear winner after a panel of judges re-scored the fight.

played a very clean match. I couldn’t be happier to get a match in straight sets against Feliciano who has been a great competitor over the years.” A capacity crowd saw Federer try out everything in his tool bag. The timely big serve, the elegant backhand, laser forehands, hustle and defense were all on display. He committed just 16 unforced errors while firing 32 winners to run his record to 13-0 against the

35-year-old Spaniard. Federer started the match as if he had dinner reservations, breaking Lopez to go up 4-2 then holding serve to clinch the opening set in a snappy 25 minutes. He marched on, his focus only faltering slightly in the third set when he allowed Lopez to break back. But the 36-year-old Swiss just buckled down and broke Lopez again to close out the match and set up a fourth round meet-

The world’s top seed Rafael Nadal overcame a first set loss to defeat Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. Despite Nadal losing the first set and squandering 14 break points during the match, the Spaniard eventually wore the Argentine down to secure the victory on Saturday. This wa s N a d a l ’s fourth win against Mayer and their first matchup since the Spaniard won in straight sets at the 2014 French Open. The 31-year-old Nadal’s perfor mances at Flushing Meadows so far this year have left plenty of room for improvement despite his three victories which take him into the Round of 16, where he will face Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov. Nadal has won the US Open on two occasions (2010 and 2013) and is widely expected to add to his tally this week, with Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic sidelined by injury and Roger Federer needing five sets to win his two opening games at the tournament.

Deepika makes first round exit at WC Final ROME, Sep 3 (PTI): Fourtime silver medallist Deepika Kumari was beaten by Tan Ya-ting in straight sets to make an embarrassing first round exit from the Archery World Cup Final here on Sunday. The former World No.1 Deepika looked a pale shadow of her former self against the Rio Olympics nemesis from Chinese Taipei, who put up a superlative display to seal the match 6-0 at the Stadio dei Marmi here. Deepika was the lone Indian to have made the cut to the World Cup Final draw of eight by virtue of her two quarter-final finishes in the four World Cups this year. The archer from Taiwan, who had eliminated Deepika in the Olympics pre-quarterfinal last year, started off with two perfect 10s to take the Indian by surprise in the first set. Ya-ting shot 10-9-10 to set an early momentum, while Deepika was a slowstarter with 8-9-10 and never really overcame from the first set jitters. The Olympic bronze medallist shot a sensational 30 out of 30 in the second set, to which Deepika (25) had no answer to. Continuing her impressive form, Ya-ting shot 28 in the third set and blew away any chance of the Indian’s bid for a fifth final.

Hamilton goes top after Italian GP win

MONZA, Sep 3 (Agencies): Lewis Hamilton took over as leader of the drivers’ world championship for the first time this year on Sunday when he claimed a lights-to-flag victory as Mercedes dominated the Italian Grand Prix. The 32-year-old Briton, seeking his fourth world title, made a perfect start from his record 69th pole position to lead his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas home for his sixth win this year, his fourth at Monza and the

59th of his career. Hamilton now leads four-time champion Sebastian Vettel by three points after the German finished third, 36.317 seconds adrift, in his Ferrari in front of a big home crowd on the weekend of the Italian team’s 70th anniversary celebrations. Having won in Belgium last Sunday, Hamilton also became the first driver to score back-toback victories this year. It was Mercedes’ third one-two this season and the team’s 39th overall.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who started 16th after incurring grid penalties, came home fourth for Red Bull ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari, French rookie Esteban Ocon of Force India, Canadian teenager Lance Stroll and his Williams team-mate Felipe Massa. Mexican Sergio Perez took ninth in the second Force India ahead of Dutchman Max Verstappen, who had started 13th for Red Bull and suffered an early puncture.

Spain beat Italy to close in on WC berth

Spain’s Isco celebrates with Sergio Ramos after scoring the opener during their World Cup qualifying match against Italy.

Madrid, Sep 3 (IANS): Attacking midfielder Isco Alarcon got Spain closer to a spot in the 2018 World Cup with an unstoppable performance in a 3-0 victory over traditional rivals Italy at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium here. Italy went 11 years without losing a classifying round for a major tourney before bowing to Spain on Saturday, reports Efe. The Italians got off to an aggressive start that was, however, punished with

cards for Marco Verratti and Leonardo Bonucci in the first 12 minutes. The match was then all Isco’s, who scored twice before the first half was over. First, at the 13th minute, he drilled a free kick past veteran Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who was slow trying to block it (1-0). Italy subsequently put on the pressure with a threatening offence, but Spain’s defence stood

Govt alone can’t promote sports: Goel New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI): Outgoing Sports Minister Vijay Goel Sunday asserted that he had a successful stint in office and categorically stated that the government alone cannot build a sports culture in the country. Goel, who was today shifted to Parliamentary Affairs Ministry as a minister of state in a reshuffle after a 13- month tenure, said he had worked with the intent of bringing about a positive change in Indian sports. “If the Prime Minister wants me to give me other responsibility, I have to accept it. If I had not performed, the PM would have dropped me in this reshuffle. But I had a successful stint, so I have been given more responsibilities,” Goel told PTI before leaving for Gramin Khel Mahostav, his last assignment as Sports Minister. “I thoroughly enjoyed my term. It is the PM’s prerogative if he wants me to move somewhere else,” Goel said when specifically asked if he was happy or surprised by the change of

portfolio. Athens Olympics silver medallist shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was today appointed the new sports minister in place of Goel. Goel, who took office in July 2016, listed his achievements but said a lot needs to be done. “We want a sports culture to develop in this country. But the government alone can’t do it. The parents at homes and teachers at schools need to encourage children to play games. The Prime Minister is a sports lover and I would request him to do more for sports,” he said. Goel said the ministry

under his charge had made some strides forward in making sports administration effective in the country. “See, we involved every stakeholder. We made considerable progress in preparing the (pending) Code (Sports). It’s with the High Court now and we should soon see its implementation. “We formed an Olympic Task Force which had some of the best sportspersons. Its recommendations are great and should help take the sport forward. The National Talent Search Portal is also a good initiative by the ministry,” he said. Asked what he would have wanted to do before going out, Goel picked sport’s inclusion in the school syllabus. “We want sports to be included in educational curriculum. We have made good progress but a lot needs to be done. I am sure the new sports minister would seriously pursue it,” he said. “I also wanted that we conduct the U-17 FIFA World Cup in an impeccable manner.”

equally steady. Then, just before halftime, as he entered the area with a left-footed low, Isco shot the ball past Buffon and into the net to make it 2-0 at minute 40, with plenty of fans shouting “Ole!” from the stands. Spain’s Alvaro Morata added another goal for a good measure at minute 77, and so it ended: Spain 3, Italy 0. Spain are now top in World Cup Group G with 19 points, three more than Italy. “I would give Spain a nine out of 10 for this match, as you can always improve, but it’s true that we did play a great game,” Spain captain Sergio Ramos was quoted as saying by marca.com. Italy chief coach Gian Piero Ventura said after the loss: “There was a very obvious difference physically and in terms of quality. “We got things wrong and gifted them things and made it hard for ourselves. We conceded two goals without another shot on target while David De Gea made three important saves. We’re human and they’re a bit less so.”

India complete 5-0 clean sweep of SL

Virat Kohli is greeted by M Pandey after his fifty against SriLanka in Colombo on Sunday. (PTI)

Colombo, Sep 3 (PTI): Virat Kohli displayed utmost ruthlessness in both captaincy and batsmanship

as India became the first visiting country to inflict a 5-0 ‘Whitewash’ on Sri Lanka with a thumping six-wicket

victory in the final ODI of the series. In one of the most lopsided bilateral contests in recent history, India have now completed back-to-back rout after humiliating the islanders in the three-Test series, which was also a complete rout. After Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s maiden five-wicket haul enabled India to restrict Sri Lanka to a below-par 238, Kohli for the umpteenth time anchored a successful chase in 46.3 overs with a fluent unbeaten 110. Kohli got able

Rooney says no England U-turn LONDON, Sep 3 (Agencies): Wayne Rooney has insisted there will be no going back on his decision to retire from England duty in a bid to at last enjoy a successful World Cup campaign. The former England captain retired from international football last month having scored a national record 53 goals in 119 appearances that included three World Cups and three European Championships. And the Everton striker said even the fact that the 2018 World Cup in Russia was on the horizon would not lead him to change his decision. "My mind's made up," he told talkSPORT radio on Sunday. "I've seen it a few times when players come out of retirement and gone to tournaments and it's not right. I think the lads now who are trying to qualify for Russia, if they get there they're the players who will deserve to play in the tournament, so my decision is made."
