Correspondent KIPHIRE, OCT 6 (NPN): In an irony of sorts, which typifies the reality in Nagaland, Kiphire, which means valley surrounded by water in Sangtam language, is facing acute water scarcity.

Despite crores of rupees being spent annually for various drinking water projects in various parts of Nagaland, the achievements are perhaps best known to

the authorities concerned at the government level.

Kiphire town is surrounded by at least seven rivers and streams– Zingki, Thsingaki, Nguki, Thükhaki, Yongna Rokre, Shu-yongkhi, Mütreki- but due to lack of government-owned water facilities, most residents here are compelled to buy water from carriers to meet their daily needs. Kiphire town which has approximately around 1000 households depend heavily on private

water pipeline that comes at a hefty fee of Rs.350 to Rs.400 per month.

With increase of urban population from villages, more people are buying water from private water carriers in town costing Rs.200 for 500 litres.

The demand for water has outstripped the ability of the local water business entrepreneurs to meet the demands.

As per the PHE department record, presently there

is 40,000 litre water reservoir that supplies water to more than 400 consumers with a monthly fee of Rs.100.

The main source of the PHED water pipeline comes from Yongna Rokre river, which is about 16.5 km away from Kiphire town. The water source was constructed in the year 2002. The existing two and half inch diameter pipeline is insufficient to feed the whole town.

The department sources said the present water supply connectivity was also experiencing frequent damages caused by landslides and owing to age-old pipes.

According to department sources, a new proposal for water supply has been submitted to the government.

Some members of the public are beginning to consider probing how much funds have been allotted for the district during the past decades. The government needs to urgently intervene and address the issue before it faces the ire of public.

As per the data available on PHED website, the status of rural water supply in Kiphire district was 98 villages/habitations as on August 16, 2018.

BAN laments taxation on Naga entrepreneurs DIMAPUR, OCT 6 (NPN): Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has expressed serious concern over taxation demand on a renowned Naga businessman and an entrepreneur recently.

In a press note, BAN media cell sated that the group, besides demanding a huge amount as yearly tax, had also downed the shutters of the business establishment. BAN condemned such demands and acts.

While appreciating that some NNPGs had resolved to exempt Naga entrepreneurs from taxation, BAN said such groups have understood that imposing tax on Naga brothers and sisters would be counterproductive and have negative impact on the upcoming Naga entrepreneurs.

Urging these groups to uphold their resolution, BAN at the same time appealed to the NNPGs who have not exempted Naga entrepreneurs to come into the fold and earn the goodwill of the Naga people. It also reaffirmed the public resolution of ‘One Government, one Tax’.

NPF legislature party criticizes Speaker DIMAPUR, OCT 6 (NPN): NPF Legislature Party has expressed disappointment and criticized the NLA speaker for “failing to apply his wisdom and keep the August House in order” during the recently concluded Assembly session. NPF alleged that the speaker was rather remotely controlled, which led to mismanagement of the decorum of the House.

During the meeting held at the residence of the leader of opposition (LoP) in Dimapur on October 6, to review the proceedings of the 2nd Assembly session, NPF LoP’s information & publicity wing said that the legislators deliberated on the issue where the speaker denied ample time for the question hour.

As item no.1 of the business list of the day was obituary reference and item no.2 was Question Hour, NPF said that the leader of the house took about 37 minutes for obituary reference and leader of the opposition another 15 minutes for the same. However, as per Rule No. 30 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in NLA, NPF said that the Question Hour was to be allotted 1 hour.

However, NPF claimed that the speaker permitted only 8 minutes, since the latter clubbed item no.1 and item no.2. “This is nothing but intentional shying away from their responsibility to answer the questions raised by the opposition bench,” the opposition party stated.

NPF further pointed out that the conduct of the officials of the Assembly secretariat was also not aboveboard while tendering advice and guidance to the Speaker. It said that the NPF members were of the view that such differential attitude towards the opposition should not be repeated in the future so that the dignity of the August House was upheld in right spirit.

The party also alleged that many starred questions put up by NPF members were also omitted. Out of 50 starred questions put forward, only 28 were accepted and listed, it said, adding while some of the un-starred questions were also not provided answers according to the questions.

NPF said that specific supplementary questions raised by the members were left unanswered by the minister in-charge, including the leader of the house. Ques-

tions like-- Why the government did not file an affidavit to counter the claim of Civil Engineers Enterprise Pvt. Ltd. (CEEPL)? Why the State government did not challenge to vacate the stay order? etc. were raised.

However, NPF said that the leader of the house gave only the excuse that, all the advocates in Kolkata were “purchasable” by Ghosal & Co. Despite making such un-parliamentary statement, undermining the integrity of the legal community in West Bengal, NPF said the speaker neither expunged the remark nor took appropriate action taken.

On the issue of the Citizenship Bill 2016 and the Brahmaputra Board, which was listed for the second day of the session, NPF alleged that the speaker arbitrarily omitted it, citing reason that it was not a State subject but a Central subject. NPF opined that such erroneous judgment was unprecedented and must be avoided in future. It said these issues were not only a matter for the elected members but encompasses the future of each and every citizen of the state in general and the Nagas in particular.

DIMAPUR: A foundation stone for the Sumi Ki construction was unveiled

by Tokheho Yepthomi, MP Lok Sabha at Chekiye village in the presence of Sumi Ki Construction Committee (SKCC) members and leaders of frontal organizations under Western Sumi Hoho on October 6.

KOHIMA: Directorate of Tourism, government of Nagaland, conducted an interschool painting competition at Olympic Higher Secondary School Zunheboto under the banner of "Paryatan Parv" on September 26.

NCSU Dimapur division supports NCSU demand DIMAPUR: The Nagaland Contractor's and Suppliers Union (NCSU) Dimapur division has extended solidarity towards the NCSU head office’s demand for an end to table tender and for inviting open tenders in all contract and supply works.

A press release from NCSU Dimapur division president, Hotoshe Chophi and general secretary, Abel Tureng stated that in this regard the NCSU Dimapur division will undertake evaluation of contract and supply works. The NCSU will ensure that works are awarded according to open tender and in strict compliance with the terms and conditions which will have to be maintained with good quality materials as per specifications.

Power deptt solicits public cooperation DIMAPUR, OCT 6 (NPN): Power department, Dimapur held a meeting on Saturday, at DC conference hall to discuss features of the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) installation of “11 KV trunk lines with LT lines composite within Dimapur”.

Civil bodies, public leaders, colony leaders of Dimapur and administration, attended the meeting, and the department solicited their support and cooperation in implementation of their developmental works.

In his opening remark, chief engineer Er. Khose Sale spoke about the activities of the Power department in Dimapur where he said that the department had been trying to deliver the best of this essential service to the state. Pointing out that there has been a huge gap between the demand and supply that the service quality had suffered leading to complaints. “But the rate at which Dimapur is expanding and the rate at which the demand is increasing is very huge” he said.

and replacement/changing of all rusted poles and old lines along main arterial roads and installation of 11 KV trunk line with LT lines composite will be undertaken. Udyam Abhilasha launched in Kiphire

KIPHIRE: Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) launched a national level entrepreneurship awareness campaign--Udyam Abhilasha on the Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in 115 aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog in 28 States.

The campaign was launched in Kiphire, the only Aspirational District in Nagaland. The campaign kicked off from the DC’s Office on October 4, in a grand opening ceremony in the presence of ADC, R. Wilfred; Akash Suni, AM, SIDBI; GM, DIC; LDM, SBI and other dignitaries.

R. Wilfred thanked SIDBI for choosing Kiphire for the program and urged all the young participants to reap its benefits. Subsequently, on the same day, it was also launched in the nearby town of Seyochung. SDO, Meyazungba Jamir was present on the occasion. He urged the participants to take full advantage of the golden scheme.

DIMAPUR: District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) held its Medical Fellowship Thanksgiving & Foundation Day Program with contractor, T. Rio as the special invitee on Saturday at DHD Chapel hall, Dimapur.

Speaking at the program, T. Rio said that thanksgiving services were the most important and biggest service of one’s life.

He spoke about how he gave offerings every Sunday and his position was upgraded increasing his offering capacity. He mentioned that his commitment towards the offering every Sunday had motivated him to not miss Sunday services.

Lamenting that very few students turned up for vaccination at Leinyak GPS, the DC directed the Education department to examine the case with the school authority and report the matter to him.

He also observed that District Hospital Longleng was in a pitiable condition without proper toilet facility, waste management, lack of water supply, etc.

The DC appealed to all government officers and departments to contribute towards proper management of the hospital till the proposed new building was completed. He also urged the hospital authority to complete the OT and delivery room at the earliest so that people do not suffer.

MCCI on proper planning for drainage clearance DIMAPUR: Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), while appreciating the ongoing clearing of clogged drains in Mokokchung town, has opined that “developing a real, proper and sustainable urban drainage system would require a lot of meticulous planning, technical expertise, proper coordination, adequate funding and visionary leadership”.

Major political parties in Mizoram welcomed the announcement of the poll date to the 40-member state legislative assembly by the Election Commission of India Saturday. Lalthanliana said the state PCC was fully prepared for the assembly poll and had been expecting an early announcement of the election date.

Diphu, Oct 6 (Agencies): The commanderin-chief (c-in-c) of now disbanded Dimasa rebel outfit Dima Halom Daogah (DHD), Pranab Nunisa was critically injured on Saturday when unidentified gunmen opened fire targeting the former rebel at Nahorbari under Diphu police station in Karbi Anglong district.

Police officials said the miscreants shot at Nunisa at Naharbari around 12 pm when he was on the way to Diphu on a bike.

An injured Nunisa said he could not identify from which direction he was shot at.

Seriously injured Nunisa was immediately admitted to Diphu Civil Hospital and subsequently he was rushed to Guwahati for advance treatment.

People’s Protection Bill not like NRC: Manipur CM

Kolkata, Oct 6 (PTI): Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Saturday said the Manipur People’s Protection Bill will not stop anyone from settling down in the state, and it is not similar to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The Bill, passed unanimously by the Manipur assembly on July 23, aims to grant the status of “natives” to Meiteis, Pangal Muslims, scheduled tribes and others who moved to the state before 1951.

Meiteis and Pangal Muslims are ethnic groups of Manipur.

The rest, categorised as “Non-Manipuris”, will have to register themselves within one month of the notification of the law.

“NRC has nothing to do with Manipur.... NRC is purely for Assam. The People’s Protection bill is a regulatory bill (that will) not deny anyone (the right) to settle,” N Biren Singh said while speaking

at the India Today Conclave East.

The only similarity between the NRC and the Manipur People’s Protection Bill is that both seek to identify people who are not Indians, but the People’s Protection Bill will not bar anybody from buying property or settling down, Singh said.

Stating that the situation of Manipur is not that of Kashmir, he said the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act has been withdrawn from municipal areas but lifting it from rural areas will take a “little more time” as “national integration and unity of India” are important. The situation in the state has become relatively peaceful now, he said.

“Unlike the situation in Kashmir, which has to deal with infiltration from Pakistan, identifying aggressors in Manipur is difficult since everything happens internally,” he said.

Kolkata, Oct 6 (PTI): Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb Saturday said he brought transparency in the system in three and a half months.

When he took over six months ago in March, Deb said, Tripura was in a debt of Rs 11,500 core, but he is optimistic to make the state a model one in the next three years.

Taking over as the chief minister he thought he would have no work to do, but was surprised by the amount of neglect the previous government had shown towards Tripura, Deb said while speaking at an interactive session at the India Today Conclave East here.

Asked about what he has done as the chief minister in the past six months, Deb said the first thing that his government introduced was transparency in the system. “It took me three and a half months to bring in transparency in the system.

We introduced a transparent recruitment policy as well,” he said.

Talking about his comments making news, he said people have always quoted him without hearing the full speech. During his tenure as Tripura CM, Deb has made it to headlines often because of his statements. Aizawl, Oct 6 (PTI): Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S B Shashank Saturday said the state election machinery was fully prepared to conduct elections to the 40-member Assembly on November 28.

Earlier in the day, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) O P Rawat in New Delhi announced that polling in Mizoram would be held on November 28.

The CEO told reporters here that Mizoram has a total electorate of 7,68,181 people including 3,93,685 female voters.

Shashank said that the electorate would cast their votes in 1,164 polling stations where EVMs would be used for the polls.

He said that 1,859 ballot units and 1,841 control units of EVMs would be used along with 1,751 VVPATs in the elections.

Tight security arrangements would be made to ensure peaceful, free and fair polls by deploying 48 companies of state police and 40 companies of central paramilitary personnel, the CEO added. Major political parties in Mizoram have welcomed the announcement of the poll date to the 40-member state legislative Assembly by the Election Commission of India.

Cong attacks EC; Rawat clarifies

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS): The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday rejected the Congress allegation that it had rescheduled the press conference to declare the poll schedule in five states under “pressure” from the Prime Minister to accommodate his election rally in Ajmer in Rajasthan.

As the Commission came under attack, Chief Election Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat suo motu, in his press conference, referred to the delay in the media interaction and said technical experts of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) informed the Commission in the morning that there were some technical problems relating to electoral roll of one state and they needed more time to solve it.

He also mentioned the pending plea in the Hyderabad High Court and the Friday order of the court directing the Commission to show the final electoral rolls of Telangana to the bench on October 8, the next date fixed for hearing, before releasing it.

have been a delay of twothree hours but for the problem relating to electoral rolls in Telangana,” he said and added parties were free to complain to the Commission if somebody got a concession.

“It is the duty of the Commission to satisfy all the stakeholders. We will hold free, fair and credible elections which is our commitment and compulsion,” he said.

Earlier, he had said politicians and political parties make criticism and the Commission has no comments to make on that.

In the morning, Congress questioned the independence of the Commission in the wake of the change of timing of the press conference.

Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha also joined issues by tweeting: “Unfortunate that Election Commission postponed announcement of election dates in five states only to enable Modi to address his public meeting in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Very sad.”

Reacting to it, the Commission had told journalists, “Prime concern was for convenience of all of you media persons to reach in time at short notice of morning message and arranging logistics here.”

Earlier in the day, the Commission sent a message to media persons at 9.50 a.m. regarding the press conference at 12.30 p.m.

Almost after an hour, the reporters received another message that the timing of the press conference had been changed to 3 p.m.

TN Gov alleges corruption in appointment of VCs Chennai, Oct 6 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday alleged corruption running into crores of rupees in the appointment of Vice Chancellors of universities in the state.

Addressing a conference on “Enhancing Quality Education” here, Purohit said he came to know about appointment of Vice Chancellors on the basis of exchange of huge amounts of money.

Purohits said he was not able to believe that first but discovered it himself and decided to change it.

He said he had appointed nine Vice Chancellors in Tamil Nadu purely on merit.

Reacting to Purohit’s charge, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss wondered what action the Governor has taken to punish the culprits.

Ramadoss said it was not enough to detect presence of corruption in the appointment of Vice Chancellors, it was also the Governor’s duty to take action against those involved in corruption.

Enlarging economic divide

P

rices of every item in the market has been witnessing steady rise, making essential commodities beyond reach of the lower section of society, especially the middle class monthly income group whose earnings are around Rs.10,000 a month. Those earning much less than Rs.10,000 have to live with the constant worry of how to make ends meet and never knowing when things could turn worse. The problems of those living in Nagaland, especially Dimapur face more than the dreadful rising prices. Daily life is living on the edge of confronting the ever rising number of extortions.

Whether prices are shooting up due to the GST or due to the perpetual forcible collection of taxes; no one is sure, least of all authorities whose response is to bury their heads in the files against the mounting problems. The common man is the worst suffer because all he gets from both the politicians and government is lip service. When prices of commodities in Dimapur rise, they have a cascading and multiply effect on the prices in other districts. It is undeniable that lack of economic avenues and also the rising cost of living is contributing to rise in anti-social syndrome. Be it an enlarging cycle gravitating around a host of problems, there is hardly any solution in confronting to tackle these activities. The authorities have failed not because of lack of attempt but lack of purpose. Today official authorities have willingly abdicated their responsibility by following the advice of the political leaders, to ‘consult’ the various organizations in all matters of governance. Such a dichotomy has also led to decisions being more populist. For instance authorities do not exercise their power mainly because of parallel self-styled authorities which have been pandered tolerated by the constitutionally instituted government. The economic burden of the common people living in Dimapur is a multi-dimensional hydra - the hike in transport fares brought about by rise in prices of diesel and petrol; the added burden of illegal taxes and thirdly, the taxes on business by syndicates. The government of the day needs to take a serious view on this issue and check those who manipulate prices and promote black marketing and profiteering. The common man (and woman) who has to pay high prices will continue to suffer because no one is interested in protecting his rights and ensuring he gets what is due. This is a grim scenario but it reveals the economic plight that continues to confront thousands of families in Nagaland while they grapple with day to day conditions. Despite the pronouncements of the government offering all kinds of ‘incentives’ (that ultimately go to near and dear ones) thousands of those involved in small trade and enterprises; be it the few Nagas and majority non-Nagas, all are gradually getting suffocated by the weakening economy and also taxes imposed by all and sundry. What these reveal is a sub-culture which has complicated the problem of promoting progressive economic growth to the state especially commercial capital of the state which has fallen on bad times since the beginning of the 90s. This sub-culture has been nurtured and then taken roots in an environment of almost utter lawlessness for decades and birthing Frankensteins.

The growing divide between the haves and haves not or those with power and the powerless is weighing down the future and towards economic gloom.

But if Jesus Christ is truly a regenerator, someone who can put His own heredity of holiness into me, then I can begin to see what He means when He says that I have to be holy. Redemption means that Jesus Christ can put into anyone the hereditary nature that was in Himself, and all the standards He gives us are based on that nature— His teaching is meant to be applied to the life which He puts within us. The proper action on my part is simply to agree with God’s verdict on sin as judged on the Cross of Christ.

The New Testament teaching about regeneration is that when a person is hit by his own sense of need, God will put the Holy Spirit into his spirit, and his personal spirit will be energized by the Spirit of the Son of God— “…until Christ is formed in you” (Galatians 4:19). The moral miracle of redemption is that God can put a new nature into me through which I can live a totally new life. When I finally reach the edge of my need and know my own limitations, then Jesus says, “Blessed are you…” (Matthew 5:11). But I must get to that point. God cannot put into me, the responsible moral person that I am, the nature that was in Jesus Christ unless I am aware of my need for it.

Just as the nature of sin entered into the human race through one man, the Holy Spirit entered into the human race through another Man (see Romans 5:1219). And redemption means that I can be delivered from the heredity of sin, and that through Jesus Christ I can receive a pure and spotless heredity, namely, the Holy Spirit.

For instance Manipur have Mary Kom 5 (five) times amateur boxing world champion, Assam have golden girl Him Das, Meghalaya have excel in national football that influenced the high profile investors to start various infrastructural and other developmental program in the state. Contrary the production rate of achievers in Nagaland is very very low or nil!!!! But why why why???

Indeed and undeniably the govt have opened it’s doors and accommodated some of the achievers to its fold by offering a decent gazetted govt job but unfortunately the govt have forgotten to accommodate the talents along as a result Nagaland is unable to produce any international level top seeded sports figure Of whom we can really be proud of and feel worth to shell out travelling around to support him/her.

All these factors led to a stumbling block like tumour thus required to be operated wide open. Relatively it’s high

time the govt should come out along fact to clarify the minds of the people simply by responding in the form of rejoinder to this article inclusive of the following sequence.

1. How much amount did the govt invest on these above mentioned talented individuals in the quest of producing multiple talented sportsmen like them?

2. How many sports academy or coaching centres have been opened so far through the influence of their outstanding performances or any other means?

3. What are the Achievements of Youth and sports ministry in the last 10 years? along with the presentation sheets that have been presented in parliament.

4. On what basis did the governor’s award being selected so far in the field of sports?

Kindly educate us by enclosing the success stories of awardees for their tireless sacrifices and contributions towards the upliftment of sportsmen in our state.

The word of God and testimonies has always been the pillar of the fellowship. However, the power of the fellowship derives from the faith prayers of these seniors.

Every Monday, they put their whole heart, soul and strength to pray for strangers whom they might never meet again. Many testimonies of heali ngs, breakthroughs and blessings are echoed every Monday.

The power of faith prayer has

been underestimated and undermined in many local churches as well as at homes. Many Christians feel that they are not righteous enough to musterthe faith required during prayer. Many more are sidelined on the assertion that their method of prayers are outdated in the fast paced technically engineered prayer lives.

Many more feel that they are too old in age and even lacks proper understanding of the Word to say powerful prayers. Such assertions of misconceptions and misunderstanding of prayer have led many to lose faith in faith prayers.

Many seniors today are the harbingers of faith prayer Christians. Their prayers might not be eloquent nor poetic; not systematic and often repetitive sometimes; coarse and even very long.

But they pray from their heart, a genuine conversation with their heavenly father, whom they have never seen but believes against all odds that He is listening. It is such faith prayers that turns the world upside down. Many have shared the testimony of how faith prayers have broken the chains of addictions, bondage and pain.

It has been an absolute joy worshipping together with the community of senior citizens who have withstood trials and sufferings, those who have severed multiple life storms, faith tested and tossed around by strange doctrines and new gospels but holding firm on to the only living power—faith prayers.

Fixing the unemployment crisis among the youths in Nagaland

T

he current state of unemployment among the youths in Nagaland is in a crestfallen state. It is a ticking time bomb that is going to explode in the next 10-15years given the unemployment rate of growth and leaves us all in a befuddle condition with an insurmountable task of coming to a solution. In the year 2016, there were 70,422 unemployed youths registered in the life register of the Department of Labor & Employment, that was two years ago by 2018 the number must have jumped to above hundred thousand unemployed youths. The 2016 registered number I presume must be way below the actual number of unemployed youths. If we take the estimated numbers of students graduating annually it comes to tens of thousands.

The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2016-17, report released by Human Resource Development (HRD) reported that for Under Graduate there were around 30,000 students and 1500 students for Post Graduate. Out of the staggering number of students graduating barely, 20003000 will see employment both Government jobs and self-employment. What will happen to the rest? They will be added to the Unemployed Youth files and that number will only begin to grow exponentially every year.

A local daily reported on the 6th of April 2018 that a number of 4, 40,306 students were enrolled in 2835 schools. My worry is that one day 60-70% of those students will graduate, in approximation that’s around 3, 00,000 students.

We don’t have the resources to employ even 10% of them, what is going to happen to all of them? Let me make this very clear, it’s not the Government’s headache, it’s a collective problem, and it’s an impending crisis for the Nagas. It’s your problem as much as it’s mine. Whether you and I have an opinion on the duties and the responsibilities of the Government done properly or not, the Government can do only so

much in fixing this issue. We have got to come together collectively and take this matter a little seriously and find a solution before we are left with no option but to abandon it completely.

Someone once said “Don’t be a part of the problem but be a part of the solution” and I don’t want to keep on grousing about how bleak our situation is, I want to be a part of the solution.

It aches my heart every time I hear about this issue and I have given a good amount of thought as to how it can be fixed. In my cogitation to find a solution I have repeatedly asked myself, what is the root of the problem?

And how can I fix it? I have come to the realization that the root of the problem is not the paucity of jobs, it’s not the Government but it’s what we are teaching in our academic institutions and how we are teaching. There is a need for revamping, reshaping and reconstructing our educational system. I will be the first one to admit that not everything about our educational system is wrong but that does not mean it does not need a fixing. I have contemplated much on the word “Educated Unemployed” and I have asked myself why can’t a person be employed if he or she is educated? And I realize that the things that have been taught are obsolete now, it cannot be used anymore. Every person that steps out of a college or a university has the same hun-

dred years old knowledge that cannot be monetized neither it’s good enough to score a job.

In my blog I have talked about how our educational system is designed to smother a child’s curiosity and creativity. Every great invention that has changed an era or brought prosperity to a nation came out of curiosity and our schools, colleges, and universities does exactly what is needed to stifle that “I-need-to-find-out” hunger.

A child’s uniqueness is shut close either by a teacher, the institution’s rules or just some stupid silly reasons.

The freedom to be self and freedom of expression is discouraged. I have had the fortune of visiting some few schools and I was appalled to find out that some of them are almost like a prison, no sense of freedom at all. Why should learning be done in such a suffocating place?

That’s the reason why learning is despised by so many students. Students are given so much outdated information to memorize and learn that they have no time to create, innovate and come up with something new.

They are kept busy with irrelevant subjects that when they come out looking for employment they possess nothing new to offer and no relevant skills. There is a need for renovation in our educational system.

It is that time of the year approaching again where citizens of Kohima will face acute water shortage during the winter months. Even during rainy seasons, people are buying water by truckloads in Kohima and elsewhere simply because water supply is at its most erratic. Our land is blessed with so many beautiful fresh rivers that flow throughout the year but citizens are forced to buy the most basic of life’s sustenance. It is ironical that in Nagaland, public amenities like bijli paani are a mirage in the desert.

ABAM, ABC organize first joint fellowship

Wokha: RTI week was celebrated in Wokha at Conference Hall, DC Office Wokha. DC Wokha, Dr. Manazir Jeelani Samoon, while delivering the keynote address during the function, stated that the RTI Act aims to bring transparency and accountability in the functioning of the government, and if utilized in the right perspective it will make government functions more effective.

EAC Wokha, Arhomo Yanthan, while giving a slide-show presentation, emphasized on the objective of the Act where he stated that it intends to create a practical regime of Right to Information for citizens to secure transparency and accountability of public authorities, to contain corruption, and to create a statutory right to information in every citizen.

by Rüükuonuo Leigise, a class 9 student of G. Rio Higher Secondary School (GRHSS) Kohima was released by Dr. Easterine Kire, poet and novelist at Hotel Japfü, Kohima on September 27.

A press release from PenThrill Publication House stated that, releasing the book, Dr. Easterine Kire remarked that this was a season of creativity for Nagas. Dwelling on writing, she also said there was no rule to writing but you just have to start. She said it was like maths where you get better with practice.

Rüükuonuo Liegise noted that the launch was a very remarkable day for her while stating that, “I will always remember this

day as the day I started off as a writer.” She also said that “Home is not an address, home is not people but home is a feeling”. She explained that the book was inspired by the many people she has met in her life.

In her publisher’s note, Vishü Rita Krocha said that at the age of fourteen, Rüükuonuo Liegise has accomplished a great feat by writing a novel, something that many writers only dream of doing.

Highlights of the program included a dedicatory prayer by Rev. Shan Kikon, pastor of Faith Harvest Church Kohima, book review by Dina Walling (author’s English teacher), special number by Suiyipeule Liegise and acknowledgements by Heinswading Liegise. The program was chaired by Mhasiselie Theunuo.

NVBDCP team visits Longleng district DIMAPUR: A state monitoring team of the National Vector Borne District Control Programme (NVBDCP) visited Longleng district on September 26 to 27 and inspected the Primary Health Centre (PHC) and sub centres.

A press release from the office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Longleng stated that the team led by state program officer, NVBDCP, Dr. Talitemsula Jamir and deputy director, NVBDCP & state assessor for measles rubella campaign Longleng district, Dr. Neisakho Kire accompanied by DVBO Longleng, Dr. Manyau Phom and DVBD consultant, Afen Phom -- visited Tamlu Primary Health Centre (PHC), Tangha Sub Centre and Yongnyah PHC. The release stated that the team oversaw program implementation, checked reports and monitored the activities of health workers and ASHAs. On September 27, the team visited Sentinel Site District Hospital Longleng, Jan Aushadhi Store and DVBO office. The state program officer and deputy director also visited Yachem PHC. After the visits, a meeting was held with all frontline health workers of NVBDCP at the CMO’s Conference Hall. CDP inaugurated at Nsong Village DIMAPUR: The inaugural program of Nsong Community Development Plan (CDP) under North East Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) was held at Nsong village on September 26.

According to a press release from NERLP DPM (Peren), Ruuvilie Kotsu, organized by the Community Development Group (CDG) and the Village Council, the CDP on ‘land reclamation by large cardamom cultivation and providing irrigation facility for vegetable farming’ has been successfully implemented by the community.

On the occasion, Ruuvilie Kotsu, DPM NERLP Peren congratulated

the villagers for the successful implementation of the CDP and lauded the villagers for their unity towards completing the activity. He challenged the villagers to understand the utility of the asset created and plan for managing these assets themselves in the long run.

He said a saturated total of 1033 SHG’s have been formed in the district where Rs.14 crores have been “supported as” seed and livelihood funds to the SHGs in the district. 130 SHG credit linkage to banks have been done and another 120 SHG’s are in the process of documentation for credit linkage. The total savings of SHG in the district is around 2 crores and 36 SHGVFs has generated interest from the corpus of more than Rs. 1 lakh and above.

The program was chaired by the CDG president, invocation was said by the local pastor, the VCC welcomed the gathering and a short speech was delivered by the chairman.

The total cost of the project was Rs. 12, 62,300 where NERLP gave Rs. 10,00,000 and Rs. 2,62,300 was the community’s contribution in terms of unskilled labor and local materials for the successful completion of the activity.

Several pressing issues related to tobacco use and how it is affecting the health of the people in general was discussed in detail.

The committee also discussed new measures to be undertaken to curb the menace of tobacco usage.

The committee decided to take up new initiatives such as integrating tobacco control activities with the ongoing treatments for tobacco free hospitals, clinics and nursing homes; the committee requested the concerned authorities to issue an order to carry out regular enforcement drives and work towards declaration of more Tobacco Free Villages under Kohima District.

DIMAPUR: As part of Poshan Maah, Food Safety on Wheels and Food Safety Team (FST), along with state program officer (Food Safety) Dr. Akuo Sorhie and Dr. Obajungla, deputy director, conducted an intensified awareness campaign on safe foods, on September 26.

A press release from Food Safety Team stated that this was to create awareness and educate food vendors, school children and the general public. The areas covered during the campaign were Lerie Colony, A.G. Colony, Lower Chandmari, Razhii Point and High School Junction, Kohima.

The following activities were carried out: Water samples were collected from a ring well at upper Lerie colony which was catering to the nearby locality and from a bore well at St. Mary Cathedral Higher Secondary School (SMCHSS); safe and nutritious food was highlighted for the students of SMCHSS by Khrukutolu Veswuh food analyst; awareness on hygiene and safe food, like the dangers of wrapping food items with news paper etc. was discussed with street food vendors; testing of formalin in fresh fish was carried out at Razhii point and suspected samples of dry fish, vegetables, chilly powder and fruits was collected at High School area for testing.

MUMBAI, Oct 6 (Agencies): Following the crisis involving Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to wield more regulatory stick on Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFC).

On Friday, the central bank said it will tighten norms to avoid asset-liability mismatches among NBFCs. Apparently, lack of such regulations led to the current sorry state of affairs at the infrastructure major.

Tata Motors ‘Festival of Gifts’ till Oct 31

Hyderabad, Oct 6 (IANS): The Central government uses banks as a weapon to penetrate into jurisdiction of states, said former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Y.V. Reddy on Saturday.

He said by controlling the banking system, the government of India is having access to extra budgetary resources or unaccountable resources to penetrate into the policies which it could not otherwise do.

Speaking at the Indian School of Business (ISB) here, Reddy said since the Union government had no developmental staff in the states, banks were used to penetrate into their jurisdiction.

He attributed the problem of Indian banking industry to the dual control by the Central government and the RBI. “Recently, we had Urjit Patel (RBI Governor) as saying that regulation should be ownership-neutral. He says I don’t have regulatory powers but the government says RBI has enough regulatory powers. What is the truth?

The truth is the problem of dual control,” he said.

“If you leave these two transient situations (oil and dollar), India has consistently acquired 7.5 (+/-) per cent growth rate, and we comfortably achieve that. In today’s global situation, that is the highest in the world.

“With these factors over the next two decades, there is a lot of potential.

India’s ability to maintain the present growth rate for a decade or two is reasonably certain,” he said.

Jaitley hoped that India would never see the kind of “horrible” economic data as it existed in 2013, before the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power.

“CAD at that time was 4.7 per cent, fiscal deficit at 5.6 per cent and during the UPA II, the average inflation was around 10.4 per cent between 2009 and 2014. Hopefully, India would never have that kind of horrible data again,” he said.

New Delhi, Oct 6 (PTI): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Saturday said a Parliament approved legislation can restore mandatory linking of biometric ID Aadhaar with mobile phones and bank accounts, but did not say if the government will bring a new law for the same.

The Supreme Court had last month upheld the Constitutional validity of Aadhaar, the 12-digit biometric based unique identity number, but restricted its use by private entities like telecom operators for verifying identity of mobile phone user.

Jaitley said the verdict was a “very sound judgment” as the court accepted that there is legitimate state aim in Aadhaar.

“Aadhaar is not a citizenship card,” he said at the HT Leadership Summit here. “Because after all you have a system where you give a lot of government money in form of various support and subsidies to all kinds of people. That was the principle objective of Aadhaar.” The Supreme Court, he said, upheld most of what Aadhaar does.

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS): With current account deficit (CAD) still remaining a concern, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday hinted at more steps to rein in the problem.

“To bridge current account deficit and to bolster flow of funds into India, we are ready and have been gradually taking a lot of steps to deal with the situation... Depending on the situation as it proceeds, you will probably see more steps which are required,” he said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.

He said the government has already taken a series of steps, including cutting its borrowings by Rs 70,000 crore, doing away with withholding tax on masala bonds for the moment and allowing oil marketing companies to raise funds worth $10 billion. Jaitley said the current account deficit is directly linked with global oil prices, which has been going up recording the highest level in the last four years, and is going to have some adverse impact.

US, Japan will coordinate in N Korea talks: Pompeo

Tokyo, Oct 6 (Agencies): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Saturday he would coordinate closely with Japan during denuclearization talks with North Korea and promised to raise the issue of the abductions of Japanese citizens in his meetings in Pyongyang.

“We will have a fully coordinated, unified view of how to proceed, which will be what is needed if it is going to be successful in denuclearizing North Korea,” Pompeo told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. “We will bring up the issue of the abductees as well,” he said.

Abe thanked Pompeo, who arrived in Tokyo on Saturday, for coming to Japan before he meets North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday.

Pompeo also said Japan and the United States were in a position to finalise a trade agreement after Abe and US President Donald

Trump discussed the issue in New York last month.

The two sides have agreed to start trade talks in an arrangement that, for now, protects Japanese automakers from further tariffs, seen as a major threat to the export-dependent economy.

Trump is unhappy with Japan’s $69 billion trade surplus with the United States - nearly two-thirds of it from auto exports - and wants a bilateral agreement to address it.

Despite Kim’s pledge to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, Japan, Washington’s key ally in Asia, still considers North Korea to be a “dire threat,” and is pushing ahead with plans to bolster its ballistic missile defenses with Aegis Ashore batteries that can target warheads in space.

Tokyo also insists that North Korea give a full accounting of Japanese citizens it abducted to train as spies and return any who

are still alive before it agrees to normalise ties.

A restoration of ties could lead to Japan releasing what could be billions of dollars of war reparations and economic assistance to its impoverished neighbour.

Pompeo will travel to Seoul after leaving Pyongyang and will head to Beijing before returning to the United States on Monday.

Speaking to a pool reporter en route to Tokyo, Pompeo said his aim in Pyongyang was “to make sure we understand what each side is truly trying to achieve.” He also said he hoped to be able to agree a “general date and location” for a second summit between Trump and Kim following their first meeting in Singapore in June.

Pompeo’s last visit to North Korea failed to make progress. Recently, he angered North Korea by insisting that sanctions must remain in place until it gives up its nuclear weapons.

On Wednesday, he said there was unanimous support for this at last week’s UN General Assembly, even if Russia and China “had some ideas about how we might begin to think about a time when it would be appropriate to reduce them.”

He declined to say if he would agree to North Korea’s demand for a declaration to end the 1950-53 Korean War or to South Korea’s suggestion that he avoid pressing again for an inventory of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons to break the stalemate.

Erdogan suggests referendum on Turkey’s EU bid Ankara, Oct 6 (Agencies): President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has indicated that he could take his country to a referendum over its EU bid, which has been long-stalled.

At the TRT World Forum, President Erdogan said, “If the European Union continues wasting Turkey’s time in its accession to the union, then the country could hold a referendum over its membership bid.

“It is better to see this process faster, so that Turkey can determine its way. European countries hold referendums twice or thrice a year. One should get used to referendums,’’ he added.

In a report published in Hrriyet Daily News, Mr Erdogan also asked for serious reform in the United Nations Security Council.

GAZA, Oct 6 (Agencies): Three Palestinians were killed and 376 injured in clashes between thousands of Palestinian protesters and Israeli soldiers in eastern Gaza Strip, close to the border with Israel, medics said.

Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesperson of Gaza Health Ministry told reporters that three Palestinians, including a child, were killed

by Israeli soldiers’ gunfire in eastern Gaza City. A total of 192 of the injured were hospitalised, including 126 shot by Israeli soldiers’ live gunshots, he said.

Al-Qedra said that among the casualties, two paramedics and two journalists, including a female, were also injured.

Since the outbreak of the clashes called ‘Great March of Return’ on March 30, the Israeli army has shot dead 197 Palestinians and wounded more than 21,000 others, he said.

Missing Interpol chief detained in China: report

Beijing, Oct 6 (PTI): Interpol President Meng Hongwei has been detained in China for questioning as part of an investigation against him, a media report said Saturday, a day after he was reported missing in his native country.

Meng, 64, the first Chinese head of the international law enforcement agency headquartered in France, was "taken away" for questioning by discipline authorities "as soon as he landed in China" last week, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post quoted a source as saying.

It was not immediately clear why he is being inves-

tigated or exactly where he is being held.

Meng, who is also a vice-minister at China's Ministry of Public Security, is under investigation in China, the Post reported amid mystery surrounding his disappearance after his wife reported to the French police that he had gone missing.

The French police said on Friday that they have launched a probe for Meng after being contacted by his wife.

Interpol, which is based in Lyon, said on Friday that it was aware of reports of Meng's "alleged disappearance” and that the issue

was a matter for the relevant authorities in France and China.

Meng was last seen in France on September 29, according to reports from France.

So far neither the public security ministry nor the foreign ministry in China

has commented.

Under China's supervision law, a suspect's family and employer must be notified within 24 hours of detention, except in cases where doing so would hinder an investigation. It appears Meng's wife was not informed.

Reports quoted an unnamed French judicial official as saying that Meng arrived in China at the end of September but there had been no news of him since.

Meng was appointed the head of Interpol in 2016.

Interpol is the world's largest agency facilitating police cooperation with 192 member countries.

ith the aim to create awareness about HIV/ AIDS through music, Nagaland state AIDS control society (NSACS) organized a multimedia campaign

supported by NACO under the theme, “Life Now, Yes life. NO HIV”. The event was held at heritage old DC Bungalow Kohima on Saturday night.

tor Dr. Ngangshimeren in his keynote address said the multimedia campaign programme was organized

by NSACS, supported by NACO, every year since 2009 with the objective

to draw the attention of young people in the state through musical concerts as 60 % of the HIV affected in the state are from ages between 15-34 years. He reminded the gathering that North Eastern states are still home for HIV in the country with Mizoram being the highest followed by Manipur and Nagaland.

He sa id this pro gramme is also organized to spread the message of love, care and compassion to the people who are affected with HIV. Project director said such programme would create awareness to the general populace in the state in regard to mode of transmission and method of prevention.

The programme also accompanied with the

grand finale of the state level acoustic /unplugged original song competition where five bands participated namely The Oath, Euli Yeptho, Sweven, Bozio Nienu and Two Fingers with Lords of Rock as the guest band.

Activities including voluntary HIV testing, quiz on HIV, free merchandise, video screening and motivational talks on HIV. Mengu Suokhrie was the hostess, motivational talk on drug abuse and its effects was shared by Nagaland Users Network member Bange Konyak, while of vote thanks was proposed by IEC NSCAS, joint director Metevinuo Sakhrie. Students of various institutions from in and around Kohima attended the event.

The film is based on Mhonbeni Ezung, the youngest recipient of national bravery award for children, 2015.

She saved her grandmother from drowning by triumphing over her fears.

With the motto, “Promoting Every Child’s Right to Entertainment”, Children’s Film Society, India (CFSI) is organizing “Children Film Bonanza” from October 9 to 11 at RCEMPA auditorium, Kohima and from October 12 to 13, at the State Academy hall,

Kohima.

The festival is being organised in collaboration with the Departments of Social Welfare and Art & Culture, Youth Resources & Sports, School Education and Information & Public Relations, Govt. of Nagaland. The target audience will be the students from Class V to Class XII of both Government and Private Schools.

Born in Ranchi, Bihar (now in Jharkhand) and brought up in Kolkata (West Bengal) Bhilai (Chhattisgarh) Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), the director of the film, Lama got his diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 1996-97. He got his first break in the business of films and television in 1998

by assisting in Ad films.

He has been an assistant director, screenplay writer, dialogue writer, theatre artist, playwright, script writer and has directed feature film, Cigarette Ki Tarah.

He has also written additional dialogue for the film Lahore, directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan which won two National Film Awards.

Girl With Balloon was the final item in an auction at Sotheby’s in London on Friday night and its sale price equalled the artist’s previous auction record of £1.04m.

Shortly after the hammer came down on the item, however, the canvas began to pass through a shredder installed in the frame.

Banksy posted an image on Instagram of the shredded work dangling from the bottom of the frame with the title “Going, going, gone … ” “It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director and head of contemporary art in Europe.

Sotheby’s said in a statement to the Financial Times: “We have talked with the successful purchaser who was surprised by the story. We are in discussion about next steps.”

India crush West Indies in 1st Test

Rajkot, Oct 6 (IANS): India outclassed the West Indies by an innings and 272 runs in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the twomatch series.

The visiting side failed to put up a show against the No.1 Test side as India dominated the entire contest and registered their biggest innings win at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

After putting a massive 649/9 on the board, India rode on its disciplined bowling attack to skittle out West Indies for the second time within

two days.

The visiting batsmen had no answer to the Indian bowling as they succumbed and fell for 181 and 196 runs in their first and second innings respectively.

Resuming their first innings at 94/6 on Saturday, West Indies were all out after an hour and 10 minutes in the morning session.

Roston Chase (53) and Keemo Paul (47) stitched together a 73-run stand.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin ran through the tail, ending with 4/37 in

11 overs.

Ashwin first removed Chase with a beauty, a flighted ball that turned in to create a big gap between bat and pad before crashing into the stumps.

Beijing, Oct 6 (Agencies): World number two Caroline Wozniacki beat Wang Qiang in straight sets to set up a China Open final against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova.

Australian Open champion Wozniacki won 6-1 6-3 against the Chinese wildcard in 82 minutes in Beijing.

Costa suffers left thigh injury Madrid, Oct 6 (IANS): Atletico Madrid’s Spanish forward Diego Costa sustained a left thigh injury during the Rojiblancos’ UEFA Champions League 3-1 win over Club Brugge, the La Liga club has announced.

The Brazilian-born Costa underwent medical scans, after being forced to leave the field shortly after the one-hour mark during Wednesday’s game, reports Efe news.

“The report offered by our medical staff indicates that he suffered an injury in the ischiosural musculature of the left thigh,” the club said in a statement on Friday.

Vijay Hazare Trophy: Nagaland beat Mizoram Dimapur, Oct 6 (NPN): Nagaland senior cricket team ended their Vijay Hazare Mens one day tournament by registering an emphatic eightwicket win over Mizoram at Anand, Gujarat on Saturday.

In its maiden entry to first class cricket, Nagaland defeated all other Northeaster n states in the Group-D of the Plate Group—Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram and narrowly lost to Uttrakhand, Puducherry and Bihar.

FIFA suspends Sierra Leone FA

FIFA acted on Friday, six days before Sierra Leone

is scheduled to play a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game in Ghana.

The intervention aims to protect the elected president Isha Johansen, a rare example of a woman heading a FIFA member federation, and her CEO-like

general secretary.

FIFA asks that both officials “be allowed to access the SLFA premises without further delay to ensure that the operations of the SLFA, including FIFA-funded projects, are not jeopardized.”
