Gunman kills 58 in Las Vegas concert attack

LAS VEGAS, OCT 2 (AGENCIES): A 64-year-old man armed with more than 10 rifles rained down gunfire on a Las Vegas country music festival on Sunday, slaughtering at least 58 people in the largest mass shooting in U.S. history before killing himself, reports Reuters. The barrage from a 32ndfloor window in the Mandalay Bay hotel into a crowd of 22,000 people lasted several minutes, causing panic. Some fleeing fans trampled each other as police scrambled to find the gunman. More than 500 people were injured. On Monday, police identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock, who lived in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, and said they did not know why he attacked the concertgoers. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the massacre, but U.S. officials said there was no evidence of that. Preliminary death toll, which officials said could rise, eclipsed last year’s massacre of 49 people at an Orlando night club by a gunman who pledged allegiance to IS militants. Shocked concertgoers, some with blood on their clothing, wandered streets, where the flashing lights of the city’s gaudy casinos blended with

Paddock killed himself before police entered the hotel room he was firing from, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters. “We have no idea what his belief system was,” Lombardo said. “I can’t get into the mind of a psychopath.” Federal officials said there was no evidence to link Paddock to militants. “We have determined to this point no connection with an international terrorist group,” FBI special agent in charge

US officials discounted a claim of responsibility for the attack made by IS through its Amaq news agency. “The Intelligence Community is aware of the claim of responsibility by a foreign terrorist organization for the shooting in Las Vegas,” CIA spokesman Jonathan Liu said in an email. “We advise caution on jumping to conclusions before the facts are in.” US law prohibits possession of newly manufactured machine guns but allows the transfer of the weapons owned before May 1986 if approved by the government. NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (IANS): Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of failing to keep his promise of creating a corruptionfree India and threatened to begin an agitation if Modi “did nothing” to enforce the Lokpal Bill. Hazare, who sat on a one day satyagraha at Rajghat on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 148th birth anniversary and paid tribute to the Father of the Nation, also wrote a letter to Modi. He said that even after three years in power, the Prime Minister had not enforced the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, but had instead “hastily” passed amendments to weaken the anti-corruption law. “I had started a movement for appointing a Lokpal. It is still incomplete. There is a need for another agitation. The government not only failed to appoint a Lokpal but has weakened the Act (The Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013),” he told reporters. Hazare said he would launch the agitation by the end of the year or early next year.

Mesquite, about 90 miles (145 km) northeast of Las Vegas, Mesquite police spokesman Quinn Averett told reporters. Despite an outcry among some lawmakers about the pervasiveness of guns in the United States, the massacre, like previous mass shootings, was unlikely to prompt action in Congress. Nevada has some of the most permissive gun laws in the United States. It does not require firearm owners to obtain licenses or register their guns. The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects the right to bear arms, and gun-rights advocates staunchly defend that provision. U.S. President Donald Trump, a

Islamic State group on Monday claimed responsibility for the mass shooting at a Las Vegas music concert, a media report said. Citing an ISIS propaganda agency, the AFP reported that the terror outfit has claimed responsibility for Sunday night’s horrific attack. “The executor of the Las Vegas attack is a soldier of the Islamic State,” the news agency quoted ISIS propaganda outlet Amaq as saying. ISIS also claimed the gunman “converted to Islam several months ago”, without providing more details. Paddock’s religion and lifestyle have not yet emerged elsewhere. He carried out the attack in “response” to calls to target countries engaged in military action against jihadists, Amaq said but gave no evidence to back its claim.

No. 8 of Dimapur town situated at Kevijaü Colony. Which was originally stood in the name of Lt. Gauri Lankesh case: SIT has got clues, says Reddy BENGALURU, OCT 2 (PTI): Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Monday claimed the Special Investigation Team probing the killing of senior Kannada journalist Gauri Lankesh has got clues and is in the process of gathering evidence. Gauri Lankesh, known to be an anti-establishment voice with strident anti-right wing views, was shot dead at close range by unknown assailants at her home here on the night of September 5. “We have got clues, but we cannot tell things to the media for now, because we should have correct evidence for the clues we have got,” he told reporters at Chikkaballapura. He said “If there are no proper evidence when we file a charge sheet at the court, it won’t stand. So we are trying to collect the evidence correctly... Our SIT is working towards gathering evidence.” The Minister had on September 9 made similar claims about SIT having gathered “some clues” in connection with the case, as he expressed hopes about nabbing the culprits soon. The Karnataka government, which has constituted the SIT headed by IGP (Intelligence) B K Singh, has announced a Rs 10 lakh reward to anyone who gives clues about the killing that led to outrage and protests. As a political slug fest broke out over the killing, her family had pleaded against giving a political colour to it. The family had said the investigators should look into all angles behind Gauri’s killing, whether it was right wing or Naxals, as reports have emerged about a possible Naxal hand, other than suspected involvement of right-wing extremists, the ideology Gauri opposed.

seen cleaning their schools, it would create controversy with even parents criticising teachers. But now, children helping clean schools is seen as positive news, he added. Soon, people who participate in cleanliness drives will not make news but pictures of those who stay away from it will be shown on television, Modi said. The country had come a long way but a lot remained to be done before the ‘clean India’ target could be achieved, Modi said. He noted that the media and members of civil society had played a key role in propagating the importance of cleanliness. There was need for introspection if the programme had not gained the desired momentum, notwithstanding the support from these sections, he stressed. Modi said the issue of cleanliness should be looked at from the prism of women, who face difficulties due to lack of toilets, and lauded children for being ambassadors of the key programme. He said men find it easy to answer nature’s call at any traffic junction. But women hold themselves back till they reach home. Referring to the need for toilets, he said when women don’t have access to toilets, they go out in the open at the crack of dawn and hold themselves back till sunset to defecate. This could lead to health problems for them. The prime minister also asked people to not discourage those who were practicing cleanliness if the government was telling them to do so.

A modus operandi

n error or mistake committed once or twice can be attributed to inefficiency and carelessness but if the mistake continues without corrective measures, then it ceases to be an error and becomes a wilful act. When the Finance department issue Drawal Authority (DA) to various departments, it is supposed to be a normal process where the money is released as payment for a particular project. Therefore, it is very strange and surprising that the Finance department which has been dealing with funds for several decades, could make the mistake not once or twice but on several occasions for issuing DA for the same project and departments. There were several and similar instances where DA were twice issued for the same project by the Finance department as could be recalled through the exposes made by Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF), Against Corruption And Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland and the case of alleged drawal without completion of work as alleged by Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC). All the revelations were obtained from replies to RTI queries and therefore, the kind of dubious financial practise cannot be dismissed lightly. Of particular interest are huge amount of money received for roads and bridges from the Government of India. Unfortunately, despite so much money received from the Centre, the roads in Nagaland are in stages of utter deterioration owing to neglect. The money meant for roads may not be enough if they are to be turned into super highways. However, the money received (as per the disclosures) is sufficient enough to do some maintenance where needed and also taking up new projects where needed. Be that as it may, the reality is that there is something amiss going on about this new phenomenon which can be best described as ‘Double Drawal Authority (DDA)’. How can the Finance department issue a serious of DDAs to state government departments; while it is supposed to be keeping a tab on expenditure in order to contain deficit? Those manning the department cannot be so naive as not keeping proper record of funds that were already allotted to respective department. While the infrastructures in Nagaland are crumbling; it is shocking that the elected representatives have forgotten their primary task for their people. Nagaland has been mortgaged by a nexus of corrupt politicians, bureaucrats, middlemen and outlaws who have made a killing by killing the present and future of the state. This has been facilitated by an absolutely negative development where there is no opposition and where all elected members are part of the great coalition. In Nagaland, everything is possible in a negative way since even public have lost courage to stand up and fight for justice. The very purpose of issuing Double Drawal Authority (DDA) by the Finance department cannot be for any purpose since people are witness to the fact that roads and bridges and construction works are not visible; although they may exist in paper. All this when many government employees are not getting salary etc. and not able to provide 10% of its share in centrally funded projects. However, the government has money to splurge on new vehicles, apportioning funds for projects not useful for public. A government with conscience would have ordered a probe into the alleged DDA scam but unfortunately, such are no longer considered offences anymore.

DailyDevotion The Place of Humiliation If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. —Mark 9:22 After every time of exaltation, we are brought down with a sudden rush into things as they really are, where it is neither beautiful, poetic, nor thrilling. The height of the mountaintop is measured by the dismal drudgery of the valley, but it is in the valley that we have to live for the glory of God. Wesee His glory on the mountain, but we never live for His glory there. It is in the place of humiliation that we find our true worth to God— that is where our faithfulness is revealed. Most of us can do things if we are always at some heroic level of intensity, simply because of the natural selfishness of our own hearts. But God wants us to be at the drab everyday level, where we live in the valley according to our personal relationship with Him. Peter thought it would be a wonderful thing for them to remain on the mountain, but Jesus Christ took the disciples down from the mountain and into the valley, where the true meaning of the vision was explained (see Mark 9:5-6, Mark 9:14-23). “If you can do anything….” It takes the valley of humiliation to remove the skepticism from us. Look back at your own experience and you will find that until you learned who Jesus really was, you were a skillful skeptic about His power. When you were on the mountaintop you could believe anything, but what about when you were faced with the facts of the valley? You may be able to give a testimony regarding your sanctification, but what about the thing that is a humiliation to you right now? The last time you were on the mountain with God, you saw that all the power in heaven and on earth belonged to Jesus— will you be skeptical now, simply because you are in the valley of humiliation?

Post-mortem

A Naga missionary’s house ransacked I

M

r. Ari Keyho, a senior Christian Missionary under Chakhesang Mission Society (CMS) has spent 23 years in UP. As my family knows him intimately, he is a dedicated and humble servant of the Living God Jehovah. Presently he has been living at Bareli, UP. When the Missionary was here in Nagaland, the Hinduism activists came, broke open his house and ransacked it on 23rd September 2017. His files and documents were soaked in water tank. The fundamentalists of Hinduism came with ill motive to harm or kill the Missionary had he not been out of station coincidentally by God’s providence. The GOI has been active in taking initiatives to synchronize the antiIslamic measures in order to curb Jihadi activities in the world involving friendly countries at international arenas. Thus, under the leadership of PM Modi, India occupies a prominent position as a strong partner of the likeminded nations in its endeavour to keep the contemporary world order. N eve r t h e l e s s, t h e BJP’s anti-secular offensive against non-Hindu communities through its foundational tentacles as RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal, etc. since 2014 till date is a complete contrary to India’s International stature. India vehemently accuses neighbour Pakistan for harbouring terror groups in its country even in the last UN general session. Support to India’s stance against Pakistan as abetting terrorism has grown in momentum. Yet, look at the home grown terror under the patronage of BJP which is equally destructive as that of Islamic jihad. Hindu terrorist assassi-

here is an enormous misconception with regard to why most students in Nagaland are unemployable. This is erroneously brought under the poorly defined slogan ‘unemployable youths,’ i.e. students in Nagaland are ‘unemployable’ because they lack appropriate ‘skills.’ All the blame is put on the students. This is why in almost any educational functions, the guests of honour—such as governor, bureaucrats, politicians, principals, owners of colleges, vice-chancellors—proclaim with utmost religious pomposity and certainty that the youths’ today are ‘unemployable.’ Here, there are things to be noted: first, the use of the word ‘unemployable’; and second, an ambiguously defined word ‘skills.’ With regard to the former, when the all-knowing speakers state with absolute certitude that ‘students are unemployable,’ they are indirectly implying that students solely are responsible for their un-employability, not the university and colleges. Certainly, it is one of the easiest excuses concocted by universities, colleges, teachers, parents, leaders, politicians, and society to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. After all, how can the voiceless students retort to such accusations? It is essential to recognize that when students enter universities and overrated colleges, they are inculcated into a system of education based on memorization, where lackadaisical teachers, habituated into the existing system, depend on giving notes and, in most

nated senior lady journalist Gauri Lankesh with pistol on 5.9.2017 in front of her house in Bangaluru. Instead of condemning the murder, the RSS and its cohorts cheered the action of the terrorists on social media. Besides, in Kerela the Hinduism activists warned the writers that those who speak and write like the victim will face the same fate. Many people died of the bullet and knife of Islamist jihadists in several countries and similarly many people belonging to religious minorities in India have died of the brutal attacks by Hinduism terrorists as such attacks were no less fatal. The offensive against the minorities in India by BJP’s terror groups are encouraged by the leader of RSS Mohan Bhagat in his address to his soldiers as I watched TV news on the Sunday morning dated 1.10.2017. Bhagat encouraged his cow vigilante groups while condemning the retaliation from their victims. In other words, BJP’s RSS has the right to kill beef eaters whereas the beef eaters have no right to resist such attacks. This is India today. The vocabulary of Terrorism sounds more frightening and intimidating than Hinduism activist as RSS (some Nagaland Christians call it a cultural organisation) and yet both inflict same degree of harm to their victims. The Hinduism soldiers targeted the Naga Missionary but they missed him. I condemn such intolerance of BJP Govt. in UP, and such crime should be condemned by Christians in Nagaland in particular. At times it is painful to observe Christian leaders soft peddling with satanic forces. Z. Lohe

Church and black money

ndia’s Prime Minister’s Decision on 9th November 2016 to scrap off old currency notes of 500 and 1000 took nation by surprise. The transition of Demonetisation (mad rush for cash and not the success of Demonetisation) was successful at the cost of human lives. People in the queue were mostly middle class people, farmers and daily wage earners. The only prime face in the queue was Rahul Gandhi who was later in the day slammed by Modi, making a remark that those involved in some big scam are turning up at a bank for a note change. India’s economy after post dem onetisation, GDP growth rate hit its lowest and to bring out possibilities for a reformation in Indian economy, Arun Jaitley met some key economist. Thus, the overall objective of demonetisation is to curb Black money and check corruption in Indian political system and governance, and the success story of black money and corruption is yet to hit Medias. Corruption free governance has been the talk of the town these days in many Indian states where elections are just few months away. During election campaigns, fighting corruption is the oriented theme of such gatherings which later becomes a mere rhetoric. Nagaland too joins the trend headed by NBCC for a clean election. Churches are organizing seminars to educate people and inculcate reasons in voter’s mind why a voter should not accept money as one exercises adult franchise. Churches are desperate about tying up loose ends, but the question remains; will churches give up accepting black money before showing concern to clean up political mess? As a Pastor, I know how difficult it is for a person to speak up against church and her programmes. I have also personally come across a lot of young minds

who silently questions the impartiality church authority shows by having great concern only towards rich families. Unlike the early churches we see in Luke’s book where apostles acts are recorded wherein believers enjoys equality and oneness as a church, it is indeed sad that today’s church is no more a fellowship of believers where poor and rich alike enjoys worshipping God, rather today’s church is more portrayed as a building and being rich is the criteria for becoming a deacon. Officers’ wives are the ultimate choice to be picked as a deaconess. Membership enrolment for rich families gets over with a serious concern and families with low incomes are neglected in granting a new membership. There is no other good reason why Church has to make a distinction of her members, the one valid and undeniable reason is churches love for money and its impact, a terrible favouritism. Though offerings and tithes are given to God as an acknowledgement for His blessings upon our lives but it is Church who uses it. Offerings and tithes should please God not church authorities. Church authorities should also acknowledge God’s obligation for tithes and offerings vouching for the fact that offertory has to do with acknowledging God and nothing else more. God was angered by polluted offerings the Southern Kingdom of Israel people offered towards him after their return from exile, Babylonian captivity following Cyrus’ decree allowing Jews to return. Prophet Malachi’s oracles content has God rebuking both priests and Israelites over their lack of honesty in giving, prioritizing materialism over spiritual values and for failing to make God the centre of their worship. I’m afraid that World class architectural church

buildings in our land are built at the span of polluted offering. I’m afraid how many big amount of undisclosed incomes or money earned illegally are flown to churches in the form of donations and churches brand such offerings as a blessings from God using them to buy cars, build expensive quarters etc. Indeed churches are transparent in giving accounts at the end of every year, but what’s more intriguing is, whether churches have ever felt suspicious that some received money lacks the source information it originally belongs to? Will churches have the guts to tell her members that one should give to God what is legally earned? Will Churches question her members one should not give to God when it is earned by means of fraud since such offerings provokes Holy God to anger? The battle at Ai recorded in the book of Israel’s military general Joshua tells how he dealt with the sin right away when his armies suffered at the handful army of Ai. It was Achan’s sin in the camp. Joshua knew as a leader that Sin should not be compromised at any cost, and he dealt with it in that very moment. Nothing troubled Joshua when he punished Achan’s family. The earthly treasures Achan collected did not distract Joshua. As one reads this narrative, readers attention are always inclined towards the character of Achan but as I read it with a homiletical approach, the story is all about how Joshua as a God’s anointed people’s leader honoured holy God’s command that sin has no place when we’re on a mission for a race ordained by God. It is high time that church leaders, including myself overlook the wealth one has and be very straightforward in dealing with monetary sin right away without further delay.

Unemployable youths: Who is to be blamed? cases, provide reductionist explanations of the concepts. This is not helped by the fact that the numerous private colleges affiliated with Nagaland University are established purely for monetary gains rather than imparting useful knowledge and skills to their students (Government colleges, on the other hand, seem to have become a proxy to secure backdoor government employment and relish the government-scale salary. They are a lost cause). Indeed, these colleges may assert vehemently that their colleges are dedicated to provide quality education and impart necessary skills. However, in many instances, these turn out to be only talks, only words. In reality, most of these colleges are there to skim off financial profits from the students as well as to skim off funds from various state and central schemes. In addition, most of the teachers, both at the university and the colleges, particularly those seasoned in the Nagaland university system are lackadaisical and indolent. They are lethargic for one of two reasons or combination of both. One, teachers, especially at the university (and government colleges), have secured their jobs; hence they are happy to live off their inflated salaries without engaging in new research nor updating themselves to the advancements made in their field of study. This is why the Nagaland University’s syllabi have not changed to reflect the advancements made in various fields of study. This is substantiated by the fact

that Nagaland University has still not revised its syllabi and credit system to the revised format of the University Grant Commission (UGC). As such, degrees received from Nagaland University and its overrated affiliated colleges are considered Sub-Standard. In other words, our students are charged exorbitant fees, by overvalued colleges, for sub-standard degrees. No wonder, students from Nagaland are highly disadvantaged when they go to mainland India seeking either jobs or admissions for higher studies. If the readers do not believe me, simply go and check the UGC website to ascertain if the Nagaland University’s syllabi reflect the updated version. Two, teachers, particularly seasoned teachers at the (private and government) colleges and university, have become accustomed to stagnant university syllabi. As such, they make notes, which they know they will never have to make any changes till the end of times, based on the university’s syllabi that do not change, and disseminate these to their students and compel them to memorize the notes (even though these notes are not only copy and pasted from Wikipedia, but they are also outdated and filled with sentence and grammatical errors). Here again, if the readers want to check the verity of my statement, go and ask any present college students’ notes and compare those notes the ones circulated by the teacher seven to ten years ago or simply check Wikipedia. When the mentality of

the teachers is such, what good can we expect from our students? (We ought to remember that students turn out to be like their teacher; hence, the state of our present society, which I need not dwell on such obvious facts) How can we expect our students to have ‘employable skills’? This condition is made worse when we take into consideration the role of numerous private colleges in our state, most of them, with very few exceptions, are money mongering. When centers for learning and education—be they private universities or colleges—become profit motivated, the result will be overinflated unemployable degree holders. When money becomes the centerpiece for any educational establishment, the quality of education is inevitably lowered and no appropriate skills for the future are provided to the students, since providing such skills and quality education cuts into the profits of the college owners and (collective) associations. To further add to the woes of the students, the teachers’ salary in the private educational institutions is well below those in the government educational institutions. This is also an essential factor to keep in mind because, when there is such a salary gap between the private and government educational institutions, this invariably affects the quality of education being imparted to the students. This is also one of the reasons why teachers in private institutions are not motivated and also lack the financial re-

sources to conduct researches and update themselves with the latest developments made in their field of study. Furthermore, because the salary is too less, teachers are unable to give their very best in terms of teaching and providing guidance to their students since they have other things in their mind to worry about—family, rent, oil, food, shelter, etc. In other words, teachers cannot teach with dignity; while, teachers in the government educational institutions are overpaid with nothing to show for in terms of knowledge contributed to their own respective fields of study. Teachers, nevertheless, do not help their case by the fact that in Nagaland, most join the teaching profession either because they have no other options, i.e. this is their last option as they have exhausted all their chances to acquire government jobs, or

Church authorities should be very candid asking her members to stop giving if the income is illegal one. Business dictionary defines black money this way, “Money that is unaccounted for and untaxed cash generated by dealings in a black economy, black money or organized crime. Holders of black money try to convert it into legitimate ‘clean or white’ through money laundering”. Since trained as a theologian, I find it difficult to give a better explanation of what black money is. My attempt to make the above definition to fit in with church context, it has to do with; money earned in unlawful means becomes ‘clean’ when it is given to church in the form of offerings/tithes/ donations. Have churches become an agent of money laundering in Nagaland? God forbids! The pathetic condition of our state should suffice how corrupted we are. The talk about Corruption has become a mere rhetoric without action, so also doing away with sin. More than 60 years isn’t still enough for Nagas to get good roads and basic human needs. Churches had celebrated centenary for the embracement of Christianity, and still churches are yet to confront the flow of black money which has made churches slaves of it. Churches should turn the tide and work on damage control and not be a mere fence sitter anymore. Revive the art of teaching core principles that deals with various human issues and spring those principles into action and this will please Holy God who dwells on High, who deserves all honour, praise and majesty. because teaching becomes a source of part-time employment as they attempt to crack competitive exams or as they await for backdoor appointments. Indeed, the government can do something to help just as it is done in many other states throughout the country. In many states, there is a government-private partnership, where a certain percentage of teachers’ salary is paid by the state government. This way, teachers are duly compensated; thereby, reducing the immense discrepancies of salary. Indeed, if one looks at the statistics, private colleges do perform better than government colleges during state exams. Hence, there are legitimate reasons as to why teachers in the private sectors ought to be helped by the state government. (To be concluded) Dr. Salikyu Sangtam, St. Joseph University

Reader’s Post Irony of Swachh Bharat

Sir,

We see a lot of people conducting cleanliness drives every now and then and these activities are on the local dailies. Yet sometimes I wish people would not only conduct these only during occasions but everyday. The dumpsters are rotting, tourists and people who see our state for the first time are put off by the smell, especially in Dimapur. It is unhygienic not only for humans but for those of us who have pets at home too. To add to this, I wish the authorities could build dumping grounds in every locality so people could dump at one particular place properly. Strict fines should also be imposed on those who litter our town. Senti Aier

WSSU demands construction of Niuland bridge/culvert DIMAPUR: The Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has drawn the attention of chief minister of Nagaland in regard to demand for construction of Niuland bridge/culvert under CMRDF immediately. In a letter to chief minister appended by WSSU president Nito Achumi, general secretary Angukato and speaker U/A Kakiho Awomi reminded the government that the lifeline of the people connecting to the state commercial capital Dimapur was cut off by the collapse of the main steel girder bridge at Chathe River in July 2017 at 4th mile, affecting thousands of general public and particularly the students. WSSU stated that while waiting for immediate construction of the bridge, the general public had to face immense hardship daily taking long route through Patkai College to reach Dimapur and with the recent washing away of the culvert at Balijan stream near Vihokhu village has left the public and students from Niuland area in pathetic condition. The Niuland area public has to take Rengmapani to Bokajan (Assam) to reach Dimapur that takes

more than 4 hours, stated WSSU and expressed that it was “disheartened by the callous attitude and running the state affairs at snail speed, leaving the public sufferings unattended at such situation”. WSSU further pointed out that despite having departments like PWD (R&B), D i s a s t e r M a n a ge m e n t with additional backup of CMRDF of Rupees 15 crore reserved for the state under CM to address such emergent situations; no tangible and effective steps have been taken by the government so far. Pointing out the danger to lives of people living at the vicinity of ‘Noune Resort’ at New Showba, owned by former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio that has private dam, the WSSU pointed out that “huge volume of water stocked was capable to wash away any bridge or submerge villages, if it accidentally collapsed at any time”. In this regard the WSSU urged the state government to immediately check and ensure safety measure and let public know if this private dam is safe for people living below the dam’s water level.

WOKHA, OCT 2 (NPN): F ive - d ay Tr a n s f o r m a tion Crusade organized by Wokha Town Baptist Church (WTBC) Youth Ministry under the theme “Arise and Shine” started on September 27 concluded Sunday here at WTBC Mother Church with thousands of youth, elders, parents and believers receiving healing, peace and blessings in their lives. Delivering the crusade conclusion sermon, senior pastor of Koinonia Baptist Church and principal of Kohima Bible College, Rev Zotuo Kiewhuo, dwelt a length on the battle between the forces of good and evil constantly raging inside everyone’s life. Elaborating further, the reverend said Satan was openly challenging God now as was manifested in the open practice of satanic worship elsewhere in the world and even in Nagaland.

Referring to the Word of God as seen in Acts 8: 5-15, the reverend wondered who was controlling Wokha town – Satan or Jesus – and told the gathering that it was up to their individual selves whether to choose God and salvation or to choose Satan and become a pawn of his evil designs. Calling upon the gathering to rejoice and be glad in the day which the Lord has made (Psalms 118: 24), and to abide by His Words and receive whatever one desires from him (John 15:7), Rev Kiewhuo also touched upon a current societal trend by underscoring the fact that no matter who one was, without God, one would never escape depression, frustration and other ills affecting today’s society. At the end of his sermon, hundreds of people from different walks of life responded to the call for dedicating their lives to God. Many were also healed of their various ail-

Reliance Communications on Sunday announced termination of mobile business merger deal with Aircel due to “Legal and regulatory uncertainties, and various interventions by vested interests” leading to “inordinate delays in receipt of relevant approvals for the proposed transaction”. Earlier this year, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular had agreed to merge their operations to create the country’s largest telecom operator worth of more than USD 23 billion with a 35 per cent market share. The combined entity of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, which are currently India’s number 2 and 3, respectively, would dislodge Bharti Airtel to counter the fierce price war in the world’s second-largest telecom market.

With regard to the caution by Patton to prove their claims or face legal action, the two said that if he (Patton) needed proof of his speech, the people who attended the event were the proof to justify his speech. Therefore, they wondered what proof Patton needed beyond thousand witnesses. Yanlong and Wango said Patton’s denial and the demand for apology/ legal action was illogical and unacceptable.

New Delhi, Oct 2 (PTI): Vodafone India and Idea Cellular merger deal is expected to be completed by March next year, as all regulatory approvals are likely to be obtained by that time, a source privy to the deal said. “There are only two permission left in the amalgamation scheme of the Idea and Vodafone. It should be completed by end of the current financial year,” an industry source, who did not wish to be named, told . Emails sent to Vodafone and Idea did not elicit any response. Both the companies are before National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for seeking its nod after which they will need final approval from the Department of Telecom. Idea Cellular will hold a meeting of shareholders and creditors on October 12 to seek their approval for the amalgamation of Vodafone India’s business with itself. The meeting of equity share-

Debtors, creditors, insolvency professionals and others are enthusiastic about this reform. Tribunals and judiciary have very expeditiously settled several contentious issues having a bearing on corporate insolvency resolution,” Sahoo said. The framework for the Code was in place by December 2016 and the first matter was admitted on January 17 this year. So far, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has decided about 700 applications seeking corporate insolvency resolution under the Code.

Listing out the priorities, Sahoo said one is to operationalise the individual insolvency regime in respect of guarantors to the corporates and the individuals having proprietary business. Besides, the IBBI will work to promote a conducive environment for the development of markets for interim finance, resolution plans and liquidation of assets. “Addressing irritations and deficiencies in the regulations as soon as we come across those from experience of carrying out transactions,” besides expediting the operationalisation of information utilities are among the priorities, Sahoo said. New Delhi, Oct 2 (PTI): Asserting that resolution plans should balance interests of all stakeholders, IBBI chief M S Sahoo has said operationalising the individual insolvency framework as well as developing the market for interim finance are among the priorities for the regulator. In one year of existence, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) has already put in place the infrastructure ecosystem and now has over 1,000 insolvency professionals registered with it. The IBBI was established under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code on October 1, 2016. “The insolvency and bankruptcy resolution has been a reform by the stakeholder, for the stakeholder and of the stakeholder given the progress so far,” Sahoo told in an interview. With swift enactment and implementation, the IBC has caught the “fancy

to 6 per cent in August, citing reduction in inflation risks. The rate cut was the first in 10 months and brought policy rates to a near 7-year low. However, retail inflation rose to a fivemonth high of 3.36 per cent in August due to costlier vegetables and fruits. The consumer price index (CPI) based inflation was 2.36 per cent in July. The Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank is scheduled to come out with next bi— monthly monetary policy decision on October 4. India Inc has already made a pitch for rate cut by RBI to perk up economic activity. Assocham has written to the Reserve Bank of India and the Monetary Policy Committee to cut the interest rates at least by 25 basis points, given the challenges being faced by the economy which needs immediate measures for revival of growth.

“Slowing growth in corporate earnings coupled with high valuations and strength in the US Dollar leading to weakness in the rupee might have led to selling by FPIs,” Bajaj Capital Senior V-P and Head Investment Analytics Alok Aggarwala said. Besides, India’s GDP growth slowed to 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2017-18 amid concerns over disruption in business activity due to issues in GST implementation. Fur ther, cor porate earnings registered a negative growth in the same quarter, pushing back recovery and heightening concerns on expensive valuation. Dinesh Rohira, CEO at 5nance.com, said the FPIs have been been looking to rebalance their portfolios in search of better returns, hence shifting their money from the over-valued Indian stocks to some of the other under-valued emerging markets like Hong Kong.

“stuck in a conundrum” of low growth, mild inflation and global uncertainties. It said that against the background of flexible inflation targeting, the obvious question that arises is choosing between — the move towards the 4 per cent inflation target swiftly or staying in the inflation band. “We expect the RBI to stay on hold at the upcoming meeting as rising incoming inflation and projections of further acceleration in inflation ahead will mean that there would be limited space for further easing,” Morgan Stanley said in the research note. Last week, a top finance ministry official said there is scope for an RBI rate cut at the next policy review as retail inflation continues to be low. In its last policy review in August, the RBI reduced the repo rate by 0.25 per cent

New Delhi, Oct 2 (PTI): Foreign investors are turning their back on Indian shares as they pulled out over Rs 11,000 crore from stocks in September due to geo-political concerns, slowdown in corporate earnings and higher valuations. The net outflow by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) follows withdrawal of Rs 12,770 crore from equities in August. Prior to that, they had pumped in over Rs 62,000 crore in the past six months (February to July). According to the latest depository data, the FPIs withdrew a net Rs 11,392 crore (USD 1.75 billion) in September. However, they pumped in Rs 4,430 crore in debt markets during this period. After taking into account the latest outflow, the total investment by the FPIs in equity markets stood at Rs 34,350 crore (about USD 5.2 billion) so far this year.

New Delhi, Oct 2 (PTI): The government expects a helping hand from the RBI in the form of interest rate cut in the next monetary policy review on Wednesday to boost growth which fell to a three-year low of 5.7 per cent in the June quarter. Several experts and industry bodies too have made a strong case for lowering of the key interest rate in view of subdued inflation and the urgency to propel economic growth which appears to be reeling under the impact of demonetization and GST implementation. However, bankers are of the view that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) would maintain status quo as inflation has seen witnessed an increase. US military jet ‘carrying explosives crashes Mississippi, Oct 2 (Agencies): A US military aircraft has crashed in eastern Tennessee and authorities believed that all those on board have died. A US Navy spokesman had earlier announced a T-45 Jet was missing after it took off from Naval Air Station Meridian in Mississippi. But Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office later revealed the plane had crashed in Tellico Plains in the Cherokee National Forest on Sunday. It is reported that the passengers were a flight instructor and student and it appears unlikely that the crew survived. A US Navy news release said: “Two pilots were aboard the aircraft, an instructor and a student. “Their status is unknown at this time.” The US National Guard says it will be in the area searching for the jet Monday. Helicopters from the University of Tennessee Medical Centre and the Knox County Sheriff ’s Office flew over the area to search for parachutes but did not find any. Monroe County Emergency Management Director David Chambers estimates that the debris field to be “at least a mile long”. Wilderness ranger Mason Boring said he saw the plane fly overhead less than 20 miles north of the crash site. He added: “He was flying super low and he was really buzzing — He was going super fast.” Mr Boring said it was common to see and hear planes in the training area. The T-45 Goshawk can carry two people and reach speeds of 645mph.

he added. Trade unions in Catalonia called a strike and a mass demonstration for Tuesday, an action likely to test public support for the Catalan government in the aftermath of Sunday’s chaos. The Spanish government of Mariano Rajoy said it was discussing its response with opposition parties in Madrid. All eyes were on the Catalan government as it considered its next move. Under the referendum legislation passed by the Catalan parliament, the regional government has 48 hours after the result is finalized to declare independence from Spain. Final votes were still being counted Monday. The Catalan President stopped short of declaring independence from Spain Monday -- a move that would further deepen the crisis. But Puigdemont called for an international

arbiter to mediate the crisis, ideally the European Union. “This moment needs mediation,” he said. “We only received violence and repression as an answer.” Puigdemont said Catalonia did not want a “traumatic break” with Madrid. “We want a new understanding with the Spanish state,” he said. If the Catalan government unilaterally declared independence from Spain, Rajoy could suspend the President and take over the running of the province. Such a move would inflame tensions considerably and would likely be a last resort for Rajoy. Several thousand people gathered outside Barcelona’s town hall Tuesday morning where the executive of the autonomous Catalan government was meeting. People shouted “Long live free Catalonia, we are peaceful people and we only want to vote.”

Myanmar offer to take back Rohingya refugees from B’desh Dhaka, Oct 2 (PTI): Myanmar on Monday proposed to take back over half a million of its Rohingyas from Bangladesh as the two countries agreed to set up a working group to coordinate the repatriation of the minority Muslims who have fled across the border after a military crackdown. More than half a million Rohingya have arrived in Bangladesh over the last five weeks after militant attacks on police checkposts in the Buddhist majority country sparked violent reprisals. Bangladesh h a s r e p e a t e d ly u r ge d Myanmar to repatriate them. Bangladesh’s Foreign minister A H Mahmood Ali today held talks here with a senior representative of Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. “Myanmar has proposed to take back the Rohingyas from Bangladesh,”

Ali told newsmen emerging from an over one hour long meeting with Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor of Myanmar Kyaw Tint Swe. The two sides agreed on forming a joint working group to oversee the repatriation process but its composition would be decided later by both the countries, he said. Ali said the meeting was held “in a peaceful manner” and Bangladesh handed over the Myanmar representative a proposed agreement for smooth refugee repatriation and suggested implementation of Annan Commission report for peaceful resolution of the crisis. “Fruitful discussion was also held on security cooperation (in the meeting) when Bangladesh reiterated its zero tolerance policy against all sorts of terrorism,” Ali said.

Barcelona, OCT 2 (Agencies): Spain is facing a political and constitutional crisis after Catalans voted in favor of independence in a contested referendum that descended into chaos when police launched a widespread and violent crackdown. The Catalan government said it had earned the right to split from Spain after results showed 90% of those who voted were in favor of a split. But amid an unexpectedly harsh response from Spanish police, turnout was only around 42%. The Catalan health ministry said 893 people were injured in the clashes Sunday as riot police raided polling stations, dragged away voters and fired rubber bullets. The Catalan President Carles Puigdemont denounced the police crackdown as the worst violence Catalonia had seen since the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and demanded the withdrawal of Spanish national forces from the region. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, called for “independent and impartial investigations into all acts of violence” around the independence referendum, and asked the Spanish government to allow UN human rights experts to visit. “Police responses must at all times be proportionate and necessary,” he said in a statement. “I firmly believe that the current situation should be resolved through political dialogue, with full respect for democratic freedoms,”

Catalan officials called on the EU to step in. “Today Europe has to choose, shame or dignity. Violence or democracy, this is our demand,” the Catalan Minister of Foreign Affairs Raül Romeva said. But the EU backed Madrid. The European Commission, the European Unions’s executive body, said the vote was illegal. “We call on all relevant players to now move very swiftly from confrontation to dialogue. Violence can never be an instrument in politics,” the commission said in a statement posted on Twitter. It said it trusted Rajoy “to manage difficult process” in respect of the Spanish constitution. Rajoy has said the vote was illegitimate. “At this point, I can tell you very clearly: Today a self-determination referendum in Catalonia didn’t happen,” he said in a televised speech Sunday night.

C o lu m b i a , O c t 2 (Agencies): The Islamic State group on Sunday claimed responsibility for a knife attack that killed two women at the main train station in the French Mediterranean city of Marseille. The monitoring group SITE quoted an Arabic language report on the group`s Amaq propaganda agency that cited a “security source” as saying: “The executor of the stabbing operation in the city of Marseille... is from the soldiers of the Islamic State.” The attacker, a man believed to be in his 30s, was shot dead by soldiers serving in a special 7,000-strong force known as Sentinelle set up to guard vulnerable areas in terror-hit France. Witnesses said he shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) at the start of his rampage. The latest deaths came with France still on high alert and under a state of emergency following a string of attacks in recent years by extremists linked to the Islamic State group or Al-Qaeda.

3 American scientists win Nobel in Medicine for decoding body clock Stockholm, Oct 2 (IANS): Three American scientists have won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for unravelling secrets of how the body’s internal clock or circadian rhythm works -- a discovery that will help doctors understand the mechanism behind sleep patterns, hormone release, blood pressure and body temperature. Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young were able to peek inside the human biological clock and elucidate its inner workings, the Nobel Prize committee said in a statement here on Monday. The winners will share a prize of 825,000 British pounds. “Their discoveries explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronised with the Earth’s revolutions,” said the Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet. The research conduct-

ed on fruit flies isolated the “period” gene that controls the normal daily biological rhythm. This gene contained instructions for making a protein called “PER”. As levels of “PER” increased, it turned off its own genetic instructions. “PER” protein was found to accumulate in the cell during the night but degraded during the day. Thus, “PER” protein levels

oscillate over a 24-hour cycle, in synchrony with the circadian rhythm. Chronic misalignments in this clock, as a result of our lifestyle and our external environment, is associated with increased risk for various diseases as well as the temporary disorientation of jet lag that travellers experience while shifting between different time zones.

Pak summons Indian envoy over alleged firing on LoC

Islamabad, Oct 2 (PTI): Pakistan today summoned India’s deputy high commissioner over the alleged ceasefire violations by the Indian troops along the Line of Control (LoC). The Foreign Office, in a statement, alleged that Indian forces resorted to firing in Rukh Chakri and Rawalakot Sectors on September 30 and October 2, killing three civilians and injuring five others, including a woman. Director General (South Asia and SAARC)

Mohmmad Faisal summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner J P Singh and “condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations” by the Indian forces, it said. Faisal claimed that it was the fifth ceasefire violation by the Indian forces in the past twelve days that killed 11 civilians, including five women, and injured 37 others. He said despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations. “The deliberate target-

ing of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws. The ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation,” he said. Faisal said that the Indian side should permit UNMOGIP to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions. India maintains that

the UNMOGIP has outlived its utility and is irrelevant after the Simla Agreement and the consequent establishment of the Line of Control. Pakistan claimed that Indian forces have carried out more than 900 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary this year, which have resulted in the deaths of 43 civilians and injuries to 153, as compared to 382 ceasefire violations in 2016.

Herath spins SL to victory against Pakistan

Newcastle frustrate Liverpool at St James’ Park

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane attempts to get a shot in at goal with his left foot during the clash with Newcastle.

Newcastle, Oct 2 (Agencies): Joselu cancelled out Philippe Coutinho’s opener, as Newcastle claimed a 1-1 Premier League draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park on Sunday. Coutinho opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side on 29 minutes with a sublime run and shot from 30 yards that arrowed into the top right-hand corner of Rob Elliot’s goal. It was the Brazilian’s 17th goal from outside the box since he made his Liverpool debut in February 2013, three more than any other player in that time. But the home side levelled just before the break in slightly fortuitous style through Joselu, a £5m summer signing from Stoke City. Jonjo Shelvey’s sublime pass split the Liverpool central defensive partnership of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren,

but Lovren did incredibly well to recover his ground to make a challenge on Joselu in the area. But the Croat’s tackle deflected the ball onto the Spaniard’s shins, and rolled past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and into the corner of the goal. Liverpool had chances to win the game in the second half, with Mo Salah wasting a golden chance on 51 minutes, and substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain heading over on 88 minutes from Alberto Moreno’s cross from the left touchline. Liverpool drop a place to seventh in the Premier League table following the draw, and now lie seven points behind early leaders Manchester City and Manchester United, while Newcastle remain in ninth with 10 points from their opening seven matches of the season.

Pakistan, set a modest 136run target, for just 114 on a weary fifth day Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch. The victor y was achieved when Herath trapped last man Mohammad Abbas leg before for nought to give Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Herath, a long-time nemesis of Pakistan, also completed 100 wickets in 20 Tests against them, during an innings in which only debutant Haris Sohail fought with some resolve for his 34 runs. Herath became the 14th bowler in all Test cricket and fifth spinner behind his countryman Muttiah Muralitharan, Australia’s Shane Warne and Indian duo of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh to reach the 400-

Cilic trounces Tsitsipas in Tokyo blowout TOKYO, Oct 2 (Agencies): Top seed Marin Cilic made quick work of Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas on Monday, winning 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Japan Open. The towering Croatian, runner-up to Roger Federer at this year’s Wimbledon, took just 73 minutes to complete a onesided victory in Tokyo against a player ranked 110 places below him. World number five Cilic, a former US Open champion, rifled eight aces and totally dominated on serve on a speedy hardcourt surface that suits his power game. South African Kevin Anderson also advanced in straight sets, the fifth seed ousting Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-2, 7-6. And controversial Australian Bernard Tomic recovered from a wobble to beat Portugal’s Joao Sousa 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. In other matches, American Ryan Harrison overcame Japan’s Yusuke Takahashi 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 while Frenchman Adrian Mannarino dumped out another local favourite, Go Soeda, 7-5, 7-6.

wicket milestone. The 136 set Pakistan was Sri Lanka’s lowest defended target, improving on the 168 they set the Pakistanis in the Galle Test in 2009. It was also a first defeat for Pakistan at this venue in 10 Tests. Earlier, leg-spinner Yasir Shah took 5-51 -- his 32nd five wicket haul in Tests -- to dismiss Sri Lanka for 138 in their second innings. Niroshan Dickwella ensured Sri Lanka had something to defend with a pugnacious 40. Pakistan started the chase on a shaky note when Herath dismissed opener Sami Aslam for two before accounting for Asad Shafiq, who made 20. Herath had taken 5-93 in Pakistan’s first innings of 422 and this time he shared

the new ball with Suranga Lakmal to put Pakistan in trouble with regular wickets. Perera then had Shan Masood (seven) and a shaky Babar Azam for three to leave Pakistan struggling at 32-4. In between fast bowler Lakmal had Azhar Ali caught behind for nought. On the either side of tea, Sohail and Sarfraz Ahmed (19) fought hard to sticth a 42-run stand but Herath provided the breakthrough when he forced the Pakistan skipper out of his crease and had him stumped by Dickwella. Perera ended Sohail’s fight by trapping him leg before and also had Shah but it turned out to be a no-ball, halting Sri Lanka’s celebrations, eventually provided by Herath.

Spain replace injured Morata, Andres Iniesta and Carvajal

M A D R I D, O c t 2 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : S p a i n coach Julien Lopetegui drafted in Alvaro Odriozola, Jonathan Viera and Aritz Aduriz on Monday to replace the injured Dani Carvajal, Andres Iniesta and Alvaro Morata respectively for World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Israel this week. Lopetegui also has the task of calming tensions around the squad in the wake of Gerard Pique’s statement that he will retire from international football if Lopetegui or the Spanish Football Federation deem his defence of an independence referendum for

Catalonia problematic. Real Sociedad fullback Odriozola and Las Palmas midfielder Viera have received their first call-up to the Spanish senior side, while veteran 36-year-old striker Aduriz is rewarded for his fine early season form. Carvajal missed Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Espanyol on Sunday due to a virus. Barcelona said in a statement that Iniesta will be sidelined for 10 days due to a hamstring strain, whilst Morata was also forced off early in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday with a hamstring problem.

Barca cruise in empty Camp Nou; Real win

Lionel Messi celebrates with Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta after scoring his second and Barcelona’s third goal. Barcelona, Oct 2 (Agencies): Lionel Messi scored a brace as Barcelona eased past Las Palmas 3-0 on a surreal Sunday afternoon at the Camp Nou. The match was played behind closed doors after

earlier calls for it to be suspended due to the situation in Catalonia on Sunday. There had been tension across the region throughout the morning as Spanish police attempted to shut down various polling stations for a referen-

dum, deemed illegal by the Spanish government, on independence. That led to calls for Barca to postpone their game amid fears there would not be adequate policing. Shortly before kickoff, the club announced

that the match would take place but with no fans in attendance. In front of a sea of empty seats, Sergio Busquets opened the scoring for the Liga leaders when he headed Lionel Messi’s corner home at the near post in the 49th minute. Messi added a second in the 70th minute, expertly rounding goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola after collecting a through ball from Denis Suarez. And he completed his double seven minutes later, sliding home a Luis Suarez pass from close range. The win makes it 21 points from seven matches, while Las Palmas remain on six points. Meanwhile, Champions Real Madrid finally secured their first home win of the campaign at the fourth attempt as Isco scored both in a 2-0 defeat of Espanyol.

The Spaniard found the net in each half at the Bernabeu as Zinedine Zidane’s men stayed within seven points of Barca. Real dominated the game but Espanyol occasionally threatened and almost got back into the game when Gerard Moreno hit the post late in the first half. They rallied after the break but Isco’s second goal in the 70th minute ended their challenge. Valencia held off an Athletic Bilbao fightback to move to third with a 3-2 win at the Mestalla. A Simone Zaza effort and Daniel Parejo penalty put Valencia into a 2-0 halftime lead but Aritz Aduriz pulled one back before the hour. Rodrigo restored a two-goal advantage but Raul Garcia struck 14 minutes from time to force Valencia to negotiate a tricky ending.

Nehra, Karthik in India T20 squad vs Aus MDFA trophy Mary Kom, Sarita in Asian Boxing C’ships squad

NEW DELHI, Oct 2 (PTI): Veteran left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra has made a comeback in the 15member Indian team while selectors once again ignored senior spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the three-match T20 series against Australia, starting October 7. The selectors decided to drop Ajinkya Rahane, who struck four back-toback half centuries, in the just concluded ODI series as his game is not considered to be suitable for the shortest format. Shikhar Dhawan made a comeback to the side after missing out on the ODI series due to his wife’s

health issues. Test specialists Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami have also been dropped from the T20 squad. Seasoned Dinesh Kar thik pipped young Rishabh Pant, primarily due to his current form as well as wealth of experience. Pant is expected to play for India A in the five match List A series against the New Zealand A. The 38-year-old Nehra’s comeback may have surprised a few but the kind of faith and respect he enjoys in the Indian dressing room is second to none. He has so far played 25 T20 Internationals taking 34 wickets in them. The other significant

development is Ashwin and Jadeja being ignored once again. With Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel giving a good account of themselves, it was going to be very difficult for Ashwin and Jadeja to make a comeback. Ashwin has had a decent County outing for Worcestershire. In four matches, he took 29 wickets and also scored more than 200 runs with 82 being his highest score. The decision is an indication that the burly Tamil Nadu tweaker is slowly falling off the radar as far as limited overs cricket is concerned.

Dimapur, Oct 2 (NPN): MDFA Trophy 2017, organized by the Mokokchung District Fo o t b a l l A s s o c i a t i o n (MDFA), will kick off Tuesday at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex with parliamentary secretary for social welfare, Merentoshi R Jamir as the chief guest. The total prize money for the tournament has been earmarked at Rs 3.60 Lakhs. Altogether, fifteen teams have registered for the silver jubilee edition. The tournament will conclude on October 21.

NEW DELHI, Oct 2 (PTI): The celebrated MC Mary Kom was back in her preferred 48kg category as she staved off the challenge from younger competitors to clinch a place in the Indian team for Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in Vietnam. After three days of gruelling trials here, during which some boxers ended up fighting two bouts in one day, the veteran duo of Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi (64kg) made the cut despite trying their luck in changed weight categories. The marquee continental event is scheduled from November 2 to 11 in the Ho Chi Minh City.

Mary Kom, a five-time world champion who had jumped a division to 51kg back in 2010 after it was included in the Asian and Olympic Games roster, will be making her sixth Asian Championships appearance. The Rajya Sabha MP

fought six bouts during the trials, winning all despite facing younger rivals in the likes of World Championships silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi among others. The Olympic bronzemedallist had announced her decision to shuffle between 48kg and 51kg categories,

depending on tournaments, at the end of last year. The 34-year-old has five medals to her credit at the regional meet, four of them gold. But this would be the first time, the Manipuri would try her luck in a weight category that fetched her two World Championship medals -- a gold and a silver. Sarita, 35, also has five Asian Championships medals against her name, four of them gold. Sarita had recently tried her luck in the professional circuit, winning her debut bout, but decided to return to the amateur fold after a few months and decided to jump a division from 60kg to 64kg.
