BENGALURU, OCT 29 (PTI): In a stinging attack on the Congress on the Kashmir issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused it of “shamelessly” taking a U-turn and lending its voice for “Kashmir’s azadi”, a language spoken by Pakistan. Manipur team to meet PM over territorial integrity issue IMPHAL, OCT 29 (PTI): A Manipur delegation will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the issues related to the state’s territorial integrity in view of the ongoing peace talks between the Centre and the NSCN (I-M), the government said. This was decided at an all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh here last evening, it said in a statement. Participants in the meeting decided to depute a team comprising five to seven members to be nominated by the chief minister to the national capital to submit a memorandum to the prime minister, it said. The memorandum will highlight the issue of territorial integrity of Manipur and an appeal to inform the developments on the Naga talks at the earliest. The political parties, comprising representatives of the BJP, the Congress, the Trinamool Congress, the Shiv Sena, the Communist Party of India, the JD(U), the NCP, the Manipur Nationalist Democratic Party and others, also agreed to approach respective central leaders to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur. In a press release, the NPF said “it stands for the integration of all Naga-inhabited areas under one administrative roof and to work and assist in any possible manner to bring a peaceful solution to the Naga political issue.” The NPF said it would not succumb to any pressure of any leader or majority members in the government.

DIMAPUR, OCT 29 (NPN): Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) on Sunday expressed strong resentment against the state government for failing to revoke the November 24, 2016 NLA resolution on Urban Local Bodies (ULB) poll, despite repeated appeals. In this regard, a follow up meeting was held on October 29 wherein the committee fervently appealed the state government to take up the matter on priority and revoke the infamous November 24 resolution, saying it was against the wishes and interest of the people of Nagaland, JCC media cell stated. It is expected from the state government “to use the wisdom of your good self and the powers vested upon you by the people to uphold and ensure to protect the rights of the people that you represent,” JCC said. The committee also reminded that a joint representation was submitted to the chief minister on March 18, 2017 urging the government to take up the matter during the Assembly Session and to pass an appropriate bill for revocation of the November 24, 2016 resolution. However, JCC said the matter was never taken up for discussion during the last Assembly Session, despite the fact that it was a serious issue confronting the aspiration and wishes of the people of Nagaland. Meanwhile, JCC appreciated the August 21, 2017 decision of the state cabinet for constituting a Review Committee to look into the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2002 in consultation with the tribal hohos and stakeholders.

DIMAPUR, OCT 29 (NPN): The third round of political dialogue between Government of India’s Interlocutor for Naga Talks, R.N. Ravi and the Working Committee of the six Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) would be held from November 1 at New Delhi. Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that there would be several rounds of meeting starting from November 1 and likely to continue till November 3. It may be recalled that the Government of India and Woking Committee had begun the political dialogue on September 27 at New Delhi. Sources informed that the second round of dialogue held in Dimapur on October 23, discussed more serious and substantive issues. In this regard, R.N. Ravi, in an interview with Nagaland Post, stated that the October 23 meeting was on substantive issue and business-like. The Spanish government on Sunday said the deposed Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, could be jailed within the next two months over his part in the regional parliament’s unilateral declaration of independence. NSCN (K) got `20 cr in 4 yrs through officials: NIA NEW DELHI, OCT 29: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reportedly established that the four Nagaland government officials including a retired officer, who were arrested on October 13, had allegedly given Rs. 20 crore to the NSCN (K) in just four years from the state exchequer, a Times of India (TOI) report stated. The report stated that the NIA had recovered payment slips and registers to this effect, which established that the four officials were allegedly hand in glove with NSCN (K) in its “illegal tax collection” racket. “These officers maintained slips and registers in which exact amount and name of the person to whom money was to be given are mentioned. The handwriting experts of Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) Gandhinagar have confirmed that these four officers maintained these slips/registers,” a source told the TOI. The official said that an assessment of payment slips and other documents had suggested that the arrested officers had handed over somewhere between Rs 20 to Rs 25 crore to NSCN (K) and other factions since 2012.

Patrolling to intensify at INP DIMAPUR, OCT 29 (NPN): With the arrival of Amur falcons to Nagaland and the advent of winter season, the management of Intanki National Park (INP) has notified that patrolling in the national park would be intensified starting from November 1. In a press note, INP director, Y.M. Jami stated that Section 27 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, which restricts entry of unauthorised persons in the National Park, has been invoked. Therefore, the director has appealed the general public to take heed of the notification, saying that the move was aimed at protecting the National Park, which is a restricted area. It may be mentioned that Intanki National Park is also a roosting place of the migratory bird Amur falcon.
ALJC extends ultimatum
DIMAPUR, OCT 29 (NPN): Awotsakilimi, Lokobomi Joint Council (ALJC) and Aizuto Centre on Sunday informed that the deadline served on the National Highway Authorities to repair the road between Kitsakita-Akuluto by October 29 has been extended till November 15. The joint council had earlier warned to impose an indefinite bandh if the authorities failed to repair the road by October 29. A joint statement signed by the joint council chairman Vitoshe Achumi and secretary Oto Shikhu, however said that the council after receiving a letter from the authorities decided to extend the deadline till November 15. While urging the department to look into the matter seriously within the specified time, the council warned that it would impose the bandh without any further notice if there was no positive response. Correspondent KO H I M A , O C T 2 8 (NPN): Expressing concern over exploitation of biodiversity to the point of endangerment, people of Nagaland have been urged to use natural resources in a sustainable way and conserve natural resources within their own jurisdiction. Speaking on “conserving natural resources” during Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO)’s seminar on “rekindling traditional” on October 28 at Viswema Council Hall, Nagaland
Pollution Control Board (NPCB) member secretary, Rusovil John, also stressed the need to avoid over exploitation of resources and clear felling of forests. He encouraged the people to practice selective felling of timber, prevent forest fires, prevent pollution of water resources, propagate useful plants, protect wildlife and encourage eco-friendly activities such as eco-tourism, rock climbing, hand gliding, trekking etc. Jo h n h i g h l i g h t e d some of the importance of conservation of natural
resources such as: to maintain ecological balance, to mitigate the effects of climate change, to prevent extinction of species, to maintain catchment area, to meet our timber/fuel requirements, to prevent natural disasters, to conserve the gene pool of rich biodiversity and to develop eco tourism. Pointing out that Japfiiphiki area was endowed with scenic landscape, pure air and clean water at its best, he said Japfiiphiki area was a land of seminatural resources due to its strategic location with its close proximity
to Nagaland’s state capital Kohima and Imphal (Manipur). He urged the people look at the wider perspective globally and not at personal immediate benefit and also urged them to promote the land resources. Joint director (Rtd) YR&S Nagaland, Vimeho Khazo also spoke on “relevance and values of traditions”. The seminar was a prelude to the forthcoming SAYO silver jubilee celebration scheduled to be held on December 3, 2017. Earlier, SAYO silver jubilee organizing committee convenor, Vitsorel Lcho, delivered keynote address while the programme was chaired by SAYO vice president, Zakeleto Tsükrü and SAYO joint secretary, Vidukho Kintso delivered the vote of thanks. DIMAPUR: Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) in a meeting with deputy commissioner (DC) Phek, Kovi Meyase and discussed certain issues relating to the district. According to CPO, agendas discussed were issues pertaining to the office running without the administrator like SDO (C) Chizami, EAC Phor, EAC Khezhakeno and EAC Razeba. CPO informed that it had asked the concern authority to post the officials at the earliest as people were suffering and the office had been func-
tioning without its head in the sector. CPO officials while stressing on the importance of a good special summary electoral revision that was going on encouraged the administration to do its best to reach the most remote locations. It also extended assistance if and when required by the district administration. The meeting also deliberated on the issue of IBIs and CPO requested the authority to keep vigil eye on IBIs. But in a country like India, where so many people are looking for jobs, our priority should be based on the environmental needs and we have to think about how we can use technology to transform our society and our students can contribute a lot in this direction. This was stated by Prof Gautam Baruah, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati, while delivering a speech on “Technological Transformation: A Futuristic Approach” today at the 20th ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education) Students’ National Convention 2017, hosted jointly by RIST and University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM). Addressing a huge gathering of engineering students coming from different parts of the country, Prof Baruah said that VLSI (Very-LargeScale Integration) devices such as mobile phones have brought revolution in the communication technology. He said that technology can enable efficient regulation of various components of a city, such as road, electricity, transport, water supply etc. The concept of ‘smart city’ too is mostly dependent on technological efficiency, he added. MLAs of the constituencies controlled the Fair Price Shop (FPS) by designating their men as “Nominee” who in turn collected money from the FPS agents. The food grains were lifted from the State authority/respondent number 2 for handing over to the respective FPS agents of the A/ Cs concerned through the nominees. However, the nominees were never recorded on official papers. The lifted food grains fail to reach the card holders under the TPDS because of these loopholes, he explained. Reminding that NFSA has become a right to its eligible beneficiaries to get entitled food grains at highly subsidized rate, Zabar said that the PIL simply seeks for the proper implementation and realization of the objects and goals of NFSA, 2013, in the state while expressing hope that the state government led by chief minister N Biren Singh will do the needful in this regard.
7th Pay demand: Employees’ Roy’s presence could benefit BJP: Ghosh bodies warns agitation Correspondent
IMPHAL, OCT 29: Various bodies of Manipur government employees have threatened to launch agitations if government fails to revoke recent orders placing five employees under suspension from their services on or before November 7 next. The five employees were suspended from their respective services after arrested by the police for participating in the mass casual leave taken by the employees pressing the government to implement 7th Pay Commission’s recommendation on October 25 last. They participated in the agitation launched under the aegis of Manipur Government Services Federation (MGSF) and released on bail after producing in a local court on the next day. On the evening of the same day, they were suspended from their services. The five employees were Aribam Indu and N Jugeshwar of Education (S), M Iboyaima of GAD and P Shyamsunder and L Deben of LDA. The suspension orders were issued by their respective administrative
departments. Notably, the mass casual leave agitation was carried out in pursuit of the demand for implementation of the 7th Pay. Strongly condemning and denouncing the action against the five employees, MGSF, in a statement, demanded immediate revocation of their suspension orders. “If the state government fails to revoke the suspension orders within the set deadline, MGSF would be compelled to launch intense form of agitation”, the statement warned. The mode of agitation to be launched will be announced later, the statement added. The Manipur Secretariat Services Association (MSSA) also resolved to launch intense forms of agitation if the services of the five suspended employees are not restored to their respective posts by November 7. The MSSA meeting held on Saturday denounced the act of detaining and suspending the five employees for joining democratic agitation in the interest of all employees of the state government.

Siliguri, Oct 29 (PTI): West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh today said former Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy was an enterprising leader and his presence could benefit his party. He, however, clarified that the former Rajya Sabha MP or for that matter any individual was not more important than the saffron organisation. Addressing districtlevel party leaders at a meeting here, the state BJP chief said: “The BJP would benefit if Roy joins the party. But he is not a factor for the party as he was for the TMC.” Anybody who joins the BJP would have to follow
certain rules and regulations, he added. Ghosh had on a previous occasion lauded Roy as a “good organiser” and said he had made a “big contribution” to the growth of the TMC in Bengal. The indication that Roy was likely to join the saffron party came when organisers of the BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha’s birthday party on October 25, invited him. Roy, who was once the second-in-command in the TMC after its chief Mamata Banerjee, this month resigned from the Rajya Sabha and quit the party. He had described the BJP as a non-communal party and said that the TMC
would not have tasted success without the backing of the saffron outfit at the national level during its initial years. The TMC suspended him for six years alleging that he had indulged in “anti-party activities” as soon as he announced that he would quit the party. Ghosh also claimed that with the BJP becoming the main opposition party in West Bengal, the TMC was allegedly pursuing “vendetta politics”. The saffron party workers were being arrested on “false” charges and killed, he said. The BJP leader also asserted that his party would form the next government in the state.

This has significantly contributed to the country’s import bill. As a means of energy security and clean fuel, methanol can replace the traditional energy sources and reduce import and pollution,” Saraswat said. Stating that augmentation of methanol production capacity of APL would immensely boost
the local economy, he said NITI Ayog would closely work with the company to utilize the stranded natural gas for producing methanol. T h e N I T I A ayo g member also requested the Chief Minister for extending support to augment methanol production capacity of Assam Petrochemicals Limited along with setting up a Dimethyl Ether (DME) plant and methanol operated cooking gas stove plant in the state. IMPHAL, OCT 29: The High Court of Manipur has fixed hearing of a writ petition (PIL) in connection with alleged deprivation of monthly entitlement food grains under National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 on November 6 next. The PIL was filed before the High Court of Manipur, praying for directing the Manipur government represented by the commissioner/secretary, consumer affairs, food and public distribution (respondent number 1) to distribute the entitled food grains meant for AAY ration card holders and PHH card holders in Manipur, particularly the card holders of Lilong Assembly of Thoubal district. The petitioner of the PIL Md Abdul Zabar, who is also the chief advisor of National Food Security Act (NFSA) Development Coordinating Committee, Lilong, Thoubal district said that the hearing fixed on November 6 would be the third hearing
of the case. Two hearings of the PIL had already held in the High Court of Manipur in the past and claimed that he and his organization were ready for the next hearing which falls on November 6. The PIL further prayed for directing the respondent number 1 to strictly implement various schemes under NFSA, 2013 in the entire state so that the right to receive food grains at subsidized prices by people belonging to eligible households of Manipur under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) is safeguarded, fulfilled and protected by the State authority. Zabar said that the PIL even prayed for directing the respondents number 1 and district supply officer (respondent number 2) to conduct an enquiry at Lilong A/C and find out the cause for failure to distribute the entitled receivable food grains to the eligible card holders for the months of September, October, December of 2016 and January,

Congress attempts at caste coalition will backfire: BJP
New Delhi, Oct 29 (PTI): The Congress may hope to upset the BJP in Gujarat with a rainbow coalition of different castes, but the saffron party believes that the move will backfire and end up boosting its prospects. BJP leaders, who are part of their party’s Gujarat Assembly poll campaign, said the Congress strategy to bring OBCs and Patidars, two groups accounting for more than half of the state’s voters, under its banner is full of contradictions as the two communities have competing interests and ambitions. Patidar leader Hardik Patels warning to the Congress to commit itself to his community’s quota demand by November 3 or face dire consequences is being seen by the BJP as a clear sign of these contradictions. Reaching out to the OBC, the Congress had recently inducted Alpesh Thakor, who has rallied
the community against the demand for including Patidars in the existing OBC quota. While the opposition party has also tried to win over Patel but Thakor has insisted that the OBC quota cannot be tinkered with. The BJP, which has remained undefeated in the state Assembly polls since 1995, has relied on the consolidation of voters around its plank of Hindutva and vikas (development), maintaining a lead of close to 10 per cent over the Congress in vote share. Patidars have been the lynchpin of the BJPs support and its leaders, who did not wish to be named, insisted that a majority of them will continue to back it despite a sense of unrest among a section of the community against the party. They played down Patels electoral significance, noting that a leader of the stature of former chief minister Keshubhai Patel could notch up less than four
per cent of votes when his Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) fought against the BJP in the 2012 elections. The GPP had won only two seats and it later merged with the BJP. However, some political watchers believe that Hardik Patels campaign against the BJP has struck a chord in the community as the quota issue raised by him has more resonance than Keshubhais fight which was confined to opposing the then chief minister Narendra Modi, now the prime minister. Modi was and remains the most popular leader in the state and Keshubhais campaign against him had not paid him much dividends, they said. The BJP leaders, however, appeared unfazed. The existing constitutional bar on quota at 50 per cent makes it impossible for any party to guarantee a separate quota to Patidars, they said. And any promise to include them in the OBC
category will antagonise the numerically powerful backward castes, who make up close to 40 per cent of the states electorate, they said, adding that the Congress will find it tough to meet Hardik Patels demand. BJP chief Amit Shah has set a target of 150 seats for the party in the 182-seat Assembly. It had won 116 seats in 2012 against 59 of the Congress. The party believes that Modis charisma, its organisational superiority over the Congress, which has seen a desertion from its ranks recently with its leader Shankarsinh Vaghela floating a new organisation, and its plank of development, will help it retain power in the western state. The Cong ress has drawn strength from the traction its attack on the BJPs development model has received in the state and is hopeful of ending the over two-decade-long saffron run in Prime Minister Modis home state.

Kerala to switch over to eco-friendly gas crematoriums Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 29 (PTI): The Kerala government is gearing up to switch over to gasoperated crematoriums in place of the existing electric-powered ones in public areas, as they are eco-friendly and cost-effective. According to official sources, the operation of electric-powered crematoriums has become very expensive as the power consumption is high and uninterrupted power supply is inevitable for it to keep the furnace pre-heated to burn the bodies.
At the same time, the eco-friendly gas crematoriums are not only costeffective and time-saving but also smoke and smell-free, they said. Suchitwa Mission, the state nodal agency for sanitation, is entrusted with the designing and technical support for the construction of LPG-powered crematoriums at the local self-government level. On the implementation of the project, Suchitwa Mission Director (Operations) C V Joy said the gas crematorium project would be implemented with the support of Kerala
Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), the state government’s special purpose vehicle. A total of Rs 110 crore was sanctioned by the government for the initiative, he said. “We are planning to set up gas crematoriums in places where the respective local self-government institutions find a place for the same,” Joy said. Detailing the design of the new crematorium, the official said their objective is to create a place which does not feel like a conventional crematorium.

The draft policy has guidelines on facilitating the public transport to shift to the electric mode, Ranjan said. “Finally, there will be something on public transport. What has been seen the world over is that moving a city into the electric vehicle has to come from the leadership of the public transport providers,” he said. “For example, buses, taxis, autorickshaws, all these people, how do you make them switch over to electric vehicles, the policy answers all these things,” Ranjan said. The draft policy would be shared with a number of other government departments to take their views before it goes for approval to the ministers and the chief minister, the official said.

Hyderabad, Oct 29 (PTI): The Telangana government has prepared a draft policy on electric vehicles which proposes benefits for manufacturers and to put in place the necessary support system towards embracing the new mode of transport. The policy has three components — for manufacturers, users and support mechanisms, an official said. “The policy has been drafted. 400 two-wheelers gutted in fire in Indore Indore, Oct 29 (PTI): About 400 two-wheelers were gutted in a fire that engulfed three shops on Sunday, police said. The blaze started in one of these shops, located in Agrasen Chouraha area, and quickly spread to the other two adjacent outlets, a police official said. The shops were being used to sell second hand vehicles. The vehicles were parked close to each other inside these shops, as a result the flames spread rapidly, he said. About 400 two-wheelers were gutted, the official said, adding documents related to vehicles were also reduced to ashes. Four fire tenders battled for a couple of hours to douse the flames, he said. The cause of the fire was not yet known, the official added. K

mong most sensible and sensitive people, the common question is ‘when will there be positive improvement in Nagaland?’ This is a question that everybody including those asking it, need to seriously ponder over. The government after all, is not something from outer space but comprise of the very same people living in the same community and even belonging to the same family. If the government has failed to live up to expectation; it clearly means that those in positions of authority, especially the elected people’s representatives have failed. These very elected people’s representatives have been elected by the people including the sensible ones in their wise judgment during elections. The church instead of embarking into another adventure (after the great prohibition flop) needs to look at the problem very deeply and seriously, away from its ‘clean election campaign’. There are a number of factors that lead to the belief that the church should look towards cleaning its own backyard first and let the reformed flock do what is right. On the other hand, the bureaucrats and other officers in crucial positions in various departments have learnt to swim with the tide – pleasing their political bosses and in some instances, creating the window of opportunity to make the system opaque so as to escape accountability. All these have turned the government system into a nest of vested interests of which there are too many. Some politicians have become so rich that they seem to have no place to store their ill gotten money. Even the law enforcement, has not been able to enforce the rule of law and it is for the officers to examine themselves. As for the people, they are living in their own small make-believe world which their political and community leaders have built on lies and deceit. With glaring regularity that brings a sense of despondency, statements and articles that find much space in the local newspapers reflect a tendency to parrot myth as reality, as it is considered politically right. Even if one were to mention corruption in Nagaland, it is not the worst ever but what makes it worse is that there is no sense of shame. For the crooks and criminals in other societies, they stand branded even if they continue to buy clout but it is different in Nagaland. Projects and programmes announced by the government or even jobs announced etc have a common denominator- that they either carry a price tag or that it requires patronage. If people make money through cheating and dishonest means stealing. With due regard to those influential political bosses and their opportunistic bureaucrats, whose actions, knowingly or unknowingly, can be described as stealing; they are actually thieves. In practise, it promotes anti social syndrome. This is a total imbalanced and highly abnormal ‘development’ which has become a curse. Today, people are compelled to live under such an environment and in doing so, have become partakers. If honesty is there in the genes then it should show but if it does not show, then one cannot be blamed for assuming that the gene of dishonesty prevails. Thus if there are too many thieves and dishonest people around then nothing good will ever come out. Whether social, spiritual, economic or political the presence of absence of the above traits or genes determine the progressive value of any society.

We say that Jesus Christ came to reveal the fatherhood and the lovingkindness of God, but the New Testament says that He came to take “away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). And the revealing of the fatherhood of God is only to those to whom Jesus has been introduced as Savior. In speaking to the world, Jesus Christ never referred to Himself as One who revealed the Father, but He spoke instead of being a stumbling block (see John 15:22-24). John 14:9, where Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father,” was spoken to His disciples. That Christ died for me, and therefore I am completely free from penalty, is never taught in the New Testament. What is taught in the New Testament is that “He died for all” (2 Corinthians 5:15)— not, “He died my death”— and that through identification with His death I can be freed from sin, and have His very righteousness imparted as a gift to me. The substitution which is taught in the New Testament is twofold— “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” The teaching is not Christ for me unless I am determined to have Christ formed in me (see Galatians 4:19).

he North-East is said to be transforming and wants to catch the eyes. India needs a stronger N-E for faster development and addition to GDP. But why is it flailing? Or is it making impacts and the nation cannot see it? Yes, the N-E is buffering. It held a meet in Delhi on its transformation and awareness. It wants to be national and just not regional hub. It is coming up with infrastructure like the longest Dhola-Sadia, Bhupen Hazarika, bridge. Still it looks for eyeballs. Its people though spread all over find the acceptance not that easy. Its contribution to the nation’s GDP today at 2.5 percent is almost half of what it was in 1947. Why should a Bangaldeshi go so far as Bengaluru if he could get a better facility near his home in Assam, Meghalaya or Nagaland? With relations improving with Myanmar and also better economic standards there, the region should design itself to draw talent from these regions including many parts of southeast Asia. Today it looks difficult. With perspective planning this could be possible, experts feel. The N-E for good has woken up. Optimism is being gradually noticed. The youth are more open and focused. Those who have some pessimism also feel that in the next ten years N-E would be different, prospering and pave the way for a new India that is often talked about.

Kandi Public Union condole DIMAPUR: Kandi Public Union (KPU) has expressed heartfelt condolences on the demise of late Jongpong Wabang Imchen, former SDO (civil) Tseminyu and father of commissioner Government of Nagaland, Sentiyanger who passed away on October 25. In a condolence message, KPU said during the tenure of late Jongpong Wabang Imchen as administrator, the Rengma people particularly Kandi group was greatly blessed. KPU said that, in his death the union have lost such great personality and that it salutes late Jongpong for his true leadership. KPU stated the legacy left behind by him shall remain a source of inspiration to the union. KPU has further conveyed condolences and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family members at this hour of grief and sorrow and wished the departed soul to rest in peace.

NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (AGENCIES): Nearly a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation, the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bills returned to banks are still being “processed in all earnest” through a sophisticated currency verification system, the RBI has said. In reply to an RTI query, the central bank said it has processed about 1,134 crore pieces of Rs 500 notes and 524.90 crore pieces of Rs 1,000 junked notes, having face value of Rs 5.67 lakh crore and Rs 5.24 lakh crore respectively, as on September 30. The combined value of the processed notes is Rs 10.91 lakh crore approximately, according to the reply. “Specified Bank Notes are being processed in all earnest in double shift on all available machines (sophisticated counting machines),” the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in reply to the RTI query filed by a PTI correspondent. The central bank was
asked to provide details of demonetised notes counted so far. Replying to a question on providing the deadline for completing the counting exercise, it said, “The verification of notes withdrawn from the circulation is an ongoing process”. The RBI said at least 66 Sophisticated Currency Verification and Processing (CVPS) machines were being used for counting of junked Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes that were deposited with various banks post demonetisation. The government had on November 8 last year banned the use of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes and allowed the holders of these currency bills to deposit them with banks or use them at certain notified utilities. The notes deposited or collected are being verified by the central bank at its offices to establish the total number of currency bills returned and to weed out those that are fake. Several opposition parties including the Con-
gress and Mamata Banerjee’s TMC have announced that they would observe November 8, the first anniversary of demonetisation, as ‘Black Day’ and would hold protests across the country to highlight its “illeffects” on the economy. To counter the opposition protest, the ruling BJP has decided to observe the note ban anniversary as “anti- blackmoney day”. In its annual report for 2016-17 released on August 30, the RBI had said Rs 15.28 lakh crore, or 99 per cent of the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, have returned to the banking system. In the annual report, which was for the year ended June 30, 2017, the central bank said only Rs 16,050 crore out of the Rs 15.44 lakh crore in old high-denomination notes have not returned. As on November 8, 2016, there were 1,716.5 crore pieces of Rs 500 and 685.8 crore pieces of Rs 1,000 notes in circulation, totalling Rs 15.44 lakh crore, it had said.

Exporters have been complaining that the new duty drawback rates have severely eroded their competitiveness, already hit by a higher working capital requirement due to absence of timely refunds, resulting in a massive shift in orders to other countries and causing widespread job losses in sectors such as textiles and leather. The distress has acquired a sharper salience ahead of the Gujarat election. Several ministries such as textiles and commerce and industry have taken up the issue with
finance ministry and a decision could be announced as early as next week, sources said. For cotton and viscose textiles, the change in the duty drawback rates and refund of state levies (ROSL), which was in the range of 11-13% has now come down by 8-9%, garment exporter H K L Magu told TOI. “There was a spurt in shipments since exporters had the option to use the earlier drawback rates till September. In October you will see a significant fall in garment exports,” he said. A Noida-based garment exporter who deals with global firms such as Zara and other top brands said the change in the drawback rates has pushed up the cost of his products from $8 to $8.80, which led to some foreign buyers opting to turn to Vietnam and Bangladesh, which already have a labour advantage. “A lot of exporters had contracted based on earlier rates. Because of GST has come down drastically, many of them are complaining about loss of competitiveness affecting them as the orders placed in May or June will see supplies till December-January.

Centre releases Rs 8,698 cr as GST compensation BENGALURU, OCT 29 (AGENCIES): Centre has released Rs 8,698 crore to states to compensate them for revenue loss following GST implementation. All states barring Rajasthan and Arunachal Pradesh, have been given compensation for the first two months (July-August) after Goods and Services Tax rollout. “Rs 8,698 crore has been paid to states as compensation for July and August. This is 58% of the total cess revenue of Rs 15,060 crore in the two months,” Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi said. While compensation was not paid to Arunachal Pradesh because the state couldn’t file any claim because of some issues, and for Rajasthan there was some other problem. Under GST law, a cess is levied on top of 28 per cent tax on luxury cars, demerit and sin Goods like aerated drink and tobacco to collect revenue to compensate states for any revenue loss on account of GST implementation.

Goyal, who took over as the rail minister after a Cabinet reshuffle in August, said he was trying to give the national transporter a “new direction”. “During the next five years, the Railways alone will be looking at an investment of upwards of USD 150 billion. And when I translate that into jobs, I see a million jobs being created only through investments in the railway sector,” he said. The Railways can play an important role in “aggressively pursuing” government agenda to provide safe, secure, comfortable travel, he said addressing an awards function organised by the business daily Economic Times here late last night. A focus on infrastructure could also help increase local manufacturing, he said. GUWAHATI, OCT 29 (AGENCIES): Customers of Reliance Communications (R Com) all over Northeast India are having a tough time due to the sudden closure of its 2G and 3G services. While the company had recently announced that it would cease its services from November 30, its has already virtually collapsed in Assam, Meghalaya and other parts of the Northeast India since the third week of October, that too without any notification to its users. NEW DELHI, OCT 29 (IANS): The change in market perception of public sector banks (PSBs) following the announcement on their recapitalisation has the potential to fetch the government much higher values than that envisaged in the bank support plan via stake divestment in PSBs, industry chamber Assocham said on Sunday. “If the change of perception for PSU banks, post the mega capital infusion scheme is any indication, dilution of government equity, up to 52 per cent in the state-owned lenders can fetch valuation much higher than the estimated potential of Rs 58,000 crore as provided in the Rs 211,000 crore re-capitalisation plan,” Assocham said in a report.

The attack killed 23 people. Troops regained control of the Nasa-Hablod hotel on Sunday morning, having killed three attackers and captured two alive, said Capt. Mohamed Hussein. Karachi, Oct 29 (AGENCIES): Pakistan on Sunday released 68 Indian fishermen held for allegedly violating its territorial waters from Karachi’s Landhi jail as a goodwill gesture. The fishermen boarded a train to Lahore from where they would be taken to the Wagah border and handed over to Indian authorities. “We got orders from the Interior Ministry on Saturday to release the Indian fishermen,” Sindh province’s Home Department official Naseem Siddiqui said. The fishermen were taken in covered police vans in full security to the railway station, where volunteers of the Edhi Foundation distributed cash and gifts among the fishermen who were overjoyed to be returning home. In July, 78 Indian fishermen were released from the Landhi jail.

In a reply to the herdsmen, who wrote to Xi introducing their township in Lhunze county in Tibet, Xi also told them to develop settlements and stay put in the area bordering India. Situated in southwest China’s Tibet, Lhunzhe is close to India’s Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims as its own and calls South Tibet. He encouraged a herding family to set down roots in the border area, safeguard the Chinese territory and develop their hometown, according to a short dispatch from Xinhua news agency. In August, Indian and Chinese armies ended a over-two-month military stand-off – worst in decades – in the Sikkim sector which abuts Tibet. During the faceoff, China sent battle tanks and conducted military drills in the Tibetan plateau.
SEOUL, Oct 29 (AGENCIES): The threat of nuclear missile attack by North Korea is accelerating, US defense secretary Jim Mattis said Saturday, accusing the North of illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear programs and pledging to repel any strike. In remarks in Seoul with South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo at his side, Mattis said North Korea engages in “outlaw” behavior and that the US will never accept a nuclear North. The Pentagon chief added that regardless of what the North might try, it is overmatched by the firepower and cohesiveness of the decades-old US-South Korean alliance. “North Korea has accelerated the threat that it poses to its neighbors and the world through its illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear weapons programs,” he said, adding that USSouth Korean military and diplomatic collaboration thus has taken on “a new
urgency.” “I cannot imagine a condition under which the United States would accept North Korea as a nuclear power,” Mattis said. NAYPYITAW, Oct 29 (AGENCIES): Myanmar police said on Saturday they were preparing to charge journalists working for Turkey’s state broadcaster TRT, their local interpreter and driver for bringing a drone into the country without permission. The police were also expecting to obtain court permission to remand the four for up to 15 days as they prepare to charge them under Section 8 of the Export and Import Law. Violators of it can be jailed for up to three years. The journalists — Lau Hon Meng from Singapore and Mok Choy Lin from Malaysia — plus their interpreter Aung Naing Soe and driver Hla Tin have been detained since Friday for flying a drone near the Parliament in Myanmar’s capital Naypyitaw. The development comes amid tension between Turkey and Myanmar over the Rohingya crisis. In early
September, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had said that the death of the Rohingya constituted a “genocide” aimed at Muslim communities in the region, a charge Myanmar denies. Turkish broadcaster TRT said on its website that the network “is in discussions with Myanmar authorities to secure their release. Both journalists had valid visas”. Myanmar police spokesman Police Colonel Myo Thu Soe told Reuters the journalists “illegally imported the drone” and all four will be charged under the Export and Import Law. Woodward bought him a new watch in 1984, and he gave the Daytona Rolex to his daughter’s then-boyfriend, James Cox. Cox put the watch up for auction, and some of the proceeds will go towards the Newman’s Own Foundation, the charity set up by Newman in 2005 that receives all the profits from his Newman’s Own food range. our bands from Nagaland were declared qualified on Sunday for the Hornbill International Rock Contest 2017, in the state level auditions of Hornbill International Rock Contest held on October 28 at RCEMPA Jotsoma. The selected bands to represent Nagaland in this year’s edition of the HIRC includes Radiocity (Kohima), Switchblade (Kohima), The Great Decade (Mokokchung) and Yellow Beacon (Dimapur). The initial decision to just
allow three slots for local bands was increased to four because of quality performances by the six contesting bands , who performed two songs each before the judges at the RCEMPA, Jotsoma on the October 28 . The audition was judged by Thejove, former guitarist of Tribal Instinct, Bendang Kichu drummer of Divine Connection and Fung Walling, bassist of Alobo Naga and the band. (Correspondent)

The disc, which is due on November 10, includes a re-imagining of the group’s breakthrough 2003 hit “Bring Me To Life� without the guest rap by vocalist Paul McCoy. “God bless the rap, it’s part of what got us on the radio, I guess,� Lee said. “At least according to all the rules of radio that I don’t agree with or understand. The rap wasn’t part of our original idea or sound, it was a compromise in many ways. So to be able to go back to the original vision for the song

Rolex watch belonging to the late Hollywood star Paul Newman has sold for a record price at auction in New York. The watch was given to him by his wife Joanne Woodward as they filmed the 1969 movie Winning together. Newman, who died in 2008 aged 83, later used it to time car races in which he took part. The stainless steel watch was sold to an unnamed telephone buyer for $17.8m (ÂŁ13.6m) - much more than the $1m it had initially been expected to fetch. It is a record for a wristwatch sold at auction, but a Patek Philippe pocket watch sold for more than $24m in 2014. In Winning, Newman played a racing car driver, a role which spurred his interest in the sport. He went on to take part in the 24-hour Le Mans race. Before giving him the watch, Woodward had it engraved with the words “Drive Carefully, Me.â€? He

Panuphol traded three birdies against a bogey for an outward 34, grabbing just a one-shot edge over a fast-charging countryman Tirawat Kaewsiribandit, who closed in with four birdies, at the turn. Kanpur, Oct 29 (IANS): India produced a brilliant all-round performance to beat New Zealand by six runs in the third and final One-Day International (ODI) at the Green Park Stadium here on Sunday and clinch the series. Chasing a daunting target of 338 runs, the Kiwis could only manage 331/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Colin Munro (75), skipper Kane Williamson (64) and Tom Latham (65) were the major contributors for New Zealand. For India, pacer Jas-
prit Bumrah scalped three wickets and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took two. India have clinched the three-match ODI series 2-1. India captain Virat Kohli was declared the man of the series for scoring 263 runs in the three matches. He has notched up two centuries in this series. The Kiwis were off to a flying start with openers Martin Guptill and Munro going after the Indian bowlers. Sepang, Malaysia, Oct 29 (Agencies): Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso won a dramatic and damp Malaysian MotoGP Grand Prix on Sunday (Oct 30) to keep his world title hopes afloat after championship leader Marc Marquez of Spain finished fourth. “Yes, I am happy to keep my championship challenge alive,” he said at the trackside. The Italian adopted a cool strategy and worked hard to stay in the front pack as a downpour just before the start left standing water on much of the Sepang circuit. Dovizioso, who now
has six wins this season, quickly defused speculation that team-mate Jorge Lorenzo had been under orders to let him through at Turn 15 when the Spaniard was in the lead. “He lost the front. I (also) lost the front many times,” he said. Dovizioso, who started on the front row, crossed the line in 44min 51.497sec. Paris, Oct 28 (PTI): India’s Kidambi Srikanth’s dream season continued as he brushed aside the challenge of Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in straight games to win the French Open Super Series men’s singles title, here Sunday. Having already completed a hat-trick of Super Series titles, Srikanth won his fourth title of the season. Srikanth, seeded eight in the tournament, took just 34 minutes to get the better of his Japanese opponent 21-14 21-13 in the summit clash. The win ensured Srikanth, who played his fifth Super Series final this season, bag his second consecutive title in two weeks
after winning the Denmark Open in Odense last week. Srikanth, thus, became only fourth men’s singles player to win four or more Super Series titles in a calendar year. Going by Srikanth’s current form, it was expected to be a one-sided summit clash and it turned out to be one, except for the first few points of the opening game which was a neck- and-neck fight between the two shuttlers. It was Nishimoto, who started brightly to race to a 9-5 lead before Srikanth fought back to draw level at 9-9.
