a Naga of Indian origin, was replaced by Yung Aung, who belongs to the Hemi Naga community of Myanmar like late S.S. Khaplang. Significantly, senior BJP leader Ram Madhav during his recent visit to Nagaland had disclosed that Delhi was waiting for groups like the NSCN (K) to join the peace process following which a solution could be arrived at without much delay. This was read in the context of trying to announce some deal before the 2019 Lok Sabha election. On the other hand, there were reports that Nikki Sumi, a Naga from Nagaland (India) had been appointed as the Commander– in–Chief of NSCN (K) led by Yung Aung. Sources told the TNT said that Nikki Sumi had to be appointed as the C-in-C since he belonged to dominant Naga tribe. Without appointment of the Nagas of Nagaland, Aung led NSCN (K) cannot proceed ahead, it added. According to NE Live report, a two-member delegation of the Naga Mothers Association will leave for Delhi to negotiate peace on behalf of NSCN (K) leader Khango Konyak.

NEW DELHI, OCT 22 (AGENCIES/PTI): Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in an unprecedented development, conducted raids inside its own headquarters and arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devinder Kumar. The officer was arrested in connection with a bribery case against CBI’s special director and the No. 2 in the organisation, Rakesh Asthana, on Monday. Amid the infighting between CBI Director Alok Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has summoned both to “get details of the current happenings” in the premier investigative agency of the country. “PM wants to know the full facts of what is happening,” a PMO official said. Asthana is named as the prime accused in an FIR that was filed on October 15. He is alleged to have received kickbacks, amounting to Rs 2 crore, from Moin Qureshi, a meat exporter, to settle a money-laundering case against him. The allegations against Asthana come on the heels of massive infighting within the premier investigation agency. The agency came

out in defence of its chief Alok Verma after Asthana alleged that he was falsely accused in the case and that it was the CBI director who accepted the kickbacks. He had written a letter to the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) entailing this, on October 19. Devinder Kumar has been arrested on charges of fabricating the statement of Satish Sana, the complainant in the case. As many as eight mobile phones, a laptop and few documents were seized in searches that were carried out at Kumar’s office and home. Devinder Kumar, IO [investigating officer] of the case created statement of Satish Sana under CrPC Section 161. During investigation, the CBI found that Devinder was not present in Delhi on September 26, 2018 as claimed in the statement. He joined the investigation on October 1, 2018 and recorded the statement on October 3, 2018, the CBI said, in a statement. The agency added, it was found out that Devinder fabricated the statement as an afterthought to corroborate allegations made by special director Rakesh Asthana against director Alok Verma before the CVC.”

Serious credibility crisis in CBI: Cong

Congress said there is a serious credibility crisis in the CBI with its top officers accusing each other of massive corruption and blamed “vested interests” within the government for bringing the agency to “such a pass”. Congress president Rahul Gandhi alleged the CBI was being used as a “weapon of political vendetta” under Modi government and that the investigation agency was on a terminal decline and “at war with itself ”. Taking to Twitter, he cited a media report where the CBI secondin-command Rakesh Asthana has been named as an accused in a bribery case. “The PM’s blue-eyed boy, Gujarat cadre officer, of Godra SIT fame, infiltrated as No. 2 into the CBI, has now been caught taking bribes,” Gandhi tweeted. “Under this PM, the CBI is a weapon of political vendetta. An institution in terminal decline that’s at war with itself,” he said. Terming the issue “very serious”, Congress leader Sachin Pilot accused the government of interference in the CBI and asked why it was silent on the issue.
