KPU to impose bandh on NH-2 DIMAPUR, OCT 16 (NPN): Kandi Public Union (KPU), which had served an ultimatum on the state government on October 6, 2017 to direct the contractors to begin construction of BDO office building at Chunlikha within 15 days, on Monday announced that bandh would be imposed on National Highway-2 after the expiry of deadline.

In a press release, KPU publicity & information secretary, Khiyalo Kez, said the union had submitted a number of representations to the government in connection to the construction of BDO office building at Chunlikha which was inaugurated on February 29, 2012. Pointing out that construction work order was issued to M/S JK & sons constructions on November 11, 2016, the union, however, said that no action was taken up as requested.

Even after serving ultimatum, the KPU said there was no sign of construction till date. Meanwhile, KPU cautioned that it would not be held responsible for inconvenience caused to the general public due to proposed bandh.

INS Kiltan joins Indian Navy’s arsenal

VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT 16 (IANS): India’s naval defence got a boost on Monday with the commissioning of the indigenously-developed anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS Kiltan, nicknamed “silent killer on the prowl”, which is capable of fighting in nuclear, biological and chemical warfare.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman commissioned INS Kiltan, the third of the four anti-submarine warfare stealth warships built under the Rs 7,800-crore Project 28. Two similar corvettes -- INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt -- have already been commissioned by the navy. With the inclusion of INS Kiltan, which is 100 tonnes lighter than the previous corvettes and capable of carrying heavy weapons load, the Indian Navy’s capability to protect its warships and detect and target enemy vessels have been further augmented.

GST collective decision of all: PM

GANDHINAGAR, OCT 16 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asserted that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime was a collective decision of all political parties and state governments and that the Centre was only a small part in the decision-making process.

Addressing a massive gathering of party workers in Gandhinagar, Modi said in Gujarati that all “political parties, including the Congress, took the decision to bring in GST. You are all partners in this decision”.

“The central government is only a 30th part in the entire GST Council,” the Prime Minister said, indicating that the responsibility for the problems because of the new tax regime could not be rest solely on his office.

“I had said it is a new tax regime and I will review it after three months. And we not only reviewed it, but are trying to resolve all ticklish issues and all gaps relating to it.

“I assure our huge trading community that the government is committed to ensure they have no problems because of the new reformist tax regime,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister claimed that thousands of new traders were coming up to join the GST regime but seeking simplicity in its implementation. “I have given my word to the traders that I will not allow them to suffer.

“Nobody is against GST, they all want that there should be no hurdles in its implementation. We are seized of it and am continuously making suggestions to address all concerns.”

The GST has been tagged, along with the PM’s shock decision to ban highdenomination notes a year ago, as a significant contributing factor to the economic slowdown.

The Prime Minister also dared the Congress to contest the Gujarat As-

sembly elections on development plank. Attacking the party leadership, Modi said that the Nehru-Gandhi family dislikes Gujarat and Gujaratis.

He said that the opposition party was concerned with only “preserving its dynasty”. “Communalism, casteism, dynastic rule, misleading the people -- these are the instruments which Congress uses to win elections. They don’t have it in them to win on the issue of development.

“I challenge them to fight on the issue of development and stop misleading people,” he added.

Modi accused the Congress of treating Gujarati leaders “unfairly” and named Sardar Patel and former Prime Minister Morarji Desai among the party’s victims.

This came even as the Congress party accused the Election Commission of deliberately delaying the announcement of Gujarat Assembly elections to favour the BJP. “The EC has intentionally delayed announcement of date(s) for Gujarat elections just to favour Modi, to enable him to make tall, hol-

low promises to the people of Gujarat,” Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken told reporters on Monday.

On October 12, the Election Commission had announced that Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections would be held on November 9 and the results declared on December 18. However, the poll body had not announced the dates for Gujarat polls.

Earlier this month, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley met with his counterparts from states - together, they comprise the GST Council -and revised rates on a range of items. Among them, those that are crucial to traders in Gujarat: the khakra snack, for example, and man-made textile yarn.

Critics pointed out these concessions were intended to ensure the BJP was not penalised by small and medium sized businesses in Gujarat, which must vote before December 18.

“We took feedback and we made changes,” Modi said to a huge rally in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat. “All parties and states were involved” in deciding the main features of the GST, he reiterated.

KOHIMA, OCT 16 (NPN): As per the directive of the Centre, Nagaland government, supported by State Level Banker’s Committee (SLBC) and Finance department, would be organizing the ‘financial inclusion camp- Micro Units Development Refinance Agency (MUDRA) promotion campaign’ on October 17 at Capital Convention Centre in order to create more awareness of various schemes for entrepreneurs.

The programme would be graced by Health & Family Welfare minister, Imkong L. Imchen.

Briefing media persons here about the flagship programme, Nagaland chief secretary, Pankaj Kumar said that the main objective of Mudra scheme was to focus on young entrepreneurs by extending loan under three categories-- SHISHU, KISHOR& TARUN, where the beneficiary can avail loan upto Rs. 50000, Rs. 50000 to Rs. 5 lakhs and upto 10 lakhs respectively.

avail loan up to Rs. 1 crore for specified activities.

While seeking the support of media and banking fraternity, he said that the purpose of organizing the Financial Inclusion camp was to sensitise the people and create awareness about various schemes and programmes so that the maximum number of people would be benefitted.

He also highlighted about the Financial Inclusion Schemes implemented till September 30, 2017.

Kumar said under Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), 212765 new bank accounts were opened in 29 banks whereas under Under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) a total of 33,830 persons were brought under social security network while 65,830 and 1852 persons have been covered under PMSBY & APY respectively.

He further stated that under Mudra scheme- 12691 beneficiaries were benefitted in Nagaland under SHISHU, and the total amount disbursed was Rs. 40.16 crores; KISHOR-- 3837 accounts opened and an amount of

Rs. 90.76 crores disbursed and under TARUN-- 1297 accounts were opened and an amount of Rs. 86.07 crores was disbursed to the beneficiaries. Under Stand-up India scheme loan, he said 89 accounts were created and an amount of Rs. 29.24 crores was disbursed to the beneficiaries in the state.

Kumar informed that under PMJDY Nagaland state recorded almost full coverage. Under this scheme, a person can open an account with zero balance and the security covers upto Rs. 1 lakh and life insurance cover upto Rs. 30,000.

Under PMJJBY, the insurance covers against death (any case) and accident and total coverage is upto Rs. 2 lakhs with an annual premium of Rs. 220 payable. For PMSBY, insurance cover for accidental death was Rs. 2 lakh and premium is Rs. 12 annually.

He also informed that the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) scheme focuses on the unorganized sector workers, which guarantees a minimum pension of Rs. 1000 per month.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS): Come November and you will see Mother Nature in all her glory in Shillong as the Meghalaya capital holds the first India International Cherry Blossom Festival from November 8 to 11.

The festival is being organised by the Meghalaya government in collaboration with the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), a national institute under the Department of Biotechnology, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

“Meghalaya is known for many things that are exclusive to the state,” state Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said while addressing a press conference here to announce the festival.

“Now, we want to connect Meghalaya with the rest of the world with the cherry blossom festival,” Sangma said.

Centre yet to approve greenfield airport: Khandu Itanagar, Oct 16 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu today said that the Centre is yet to approve and allocate funds for construction of the greenfield airport in the state capital despite recommendation of the government in favour of the Hollongi site.

“The matter is lingering for the past 10 years and the state government has been pursuing the matter with the Ministry of Civil Aviation,” Khadu said in response to a question raised by Congress MLA Nabam Tuki during the question hour in the Assembly. The state cabinet on May 18 this year had selected Hollongi as the site for the proposed airport, he said. The state government so far has not received any specific inputs from the ministry, he added.

Thus, to convey the message of peace, the Japanese have been planting cherry blossoms across different countries of the world. Today, 27 countries across the world, including the US, New Zealand, Holland and South Korea, hold cherry blossom festivals.

Next month, India will become the 28th.

It was the Imphal-based IBSD’s Director Dinabandhu Sahoo who first noticed a cherry blossom through his hotel window while on a visit to Shillong in 2014.

Though the cherry blossom actually originated in the Himalayas, it, however, did not get popularised in

the Himalayan nations like India, Nepal and Bhutan.

“Unlike cherry blossom festivals in other countries which are borrowed from Japan, our festival is unique and we are organising the festival with our own ideas,” Sahoo said.

He said that after holding India’s first ever cherry blossom festival in Shillong last year “we have decided to go bigger this year”.

The Shillong cherry blossom festival is also unique in the sense that, while in other countries the cherry trees flower in March-June, here these blossom in November.

“Though the festival is being held from November 8 to 11, the flowering will last for two weeks,” Sahoo said.

Around 5,000 cherry blossom trees have been planted on both sides of the road leading up to Shillong from Umiam side, at the famous Ward’s Lake, New Shillong and Mawphlang.

“Our target is to plant 20,000 so that by the time

Meghalaya celebrates the 50th anniversary of its creation in 2022, Shillong will become a pink city unlike the traditional pink city that we know as Jaipur,” Sahoo said.

According to a statement issued by the organisers, in this year’s festival, there will be several community events which include guided night walks under illuminated cherry blossoms, live musical events, a beauty pageant and stalls showcasing the cuisine, wine, arts and craft of the region .

“Along side, there will be a rock concert, traditional folk music, unplugged western music and dance performances from all over North East India, choir performances, photography competitions, bicycle rallies, storytelling sessions of local and world folktales and an exhibition football match,” the statement said.

Sangma said that his government was providing local people with cherry blossom saplings.

“We are encouraging people to set up community nurseries,” he said. “We now have complete involvement of stakeholders.”

Pitching Meghalaya as the state with the most conducive environment for tourism, the Chief Minister said that he wanted more tourists to come and recharge themselves with fresh air.

“As Chief Minister, I can assure you that Meghalaya has pure air and pure air is also good for mental health,” he said.

“Come to Meghalaya and stay for a reasonable period of time,” he added.

Assam primary school teachers on strike over wages; 40 lakh students affected

Guwahati, Oct 16 (Agencies): Nearly 40 lakh students across Assam will be affected as teachers of government primary schools in the state launched a two-day strike on Monday over discrepancy in wages.

The move will come as a blow to students whose studies were affected for several weeks earlier this year as Assam witnessed the worst floods in three decades forcing schools to shut down and many to act as relief camps.

The strike called by Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association (ASPTA), the umbrella organization

of nearly 42,000 primary schools will see nearly 116,000 teachers stay away from work.

The teachers are upset with a notification of the state finance department issued in September, which had resulted in nonpayment of their salaries as per 7th pay commission recommendations, since August.

“We have been getting salaries as per the 7th pay commission recommendations since April 2016, but the sudden decision by the finance department has affected us,” said Jiban Chandra Borah, president ASPTA. As per the noti-

fication, graduate teachers who were drawing salaries in the pay scale beginning Rs 8,700 will now be getting scales of non-graduate teachers whose pay scale starts at Rs 6,200.

“We fail to understand how the finance department can take such a decision after paying us in the scale of Rs 8,700 for over 11 years.

This has affected lakhs of families,” said Borah.

He said the teachers are aware of the affect the strike will have on students and will resume duties immediately if the government withdraws the notification and start paying them their dues as earlier.

Kiren Rijiju Itanagar, Oct 16 (PTI): Union minister Kiren Rijiju said on Sunday that the rights of indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh would be protected and they would not be “let down” because of Chakma and Hajong refugees.

The Supreme Court had in 2015 directed the central gover nment to grant citizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees, mostly staying in Arunachal Pradesh. The nearly one lakh refugees came from the erstwhile East Pakistan five decades ago.

The minister of state for home affairs called upon all stakeholders, including the state govern-

ment and the apex student body All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU), to coordinate their efforts to solve the vexed issue.

“Though we are working in different fields, our sentiments for the interest of the state are same.

We need to communicate properly to each other and work harder to solve the refugee issue,” Rijiju said at the golden jubilee celebration of AAPSU. He also blamed the erstwhile Congress government for bringing the Chakmas and Hajongs to the state during their tenure, and urged the AAPSU to play a key role in bringing communal harmony in the state.

In his speech, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal called upon the sister states of the northeast to work in close coordination to fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream for making it a vibrant region.

“Let us all join hands for the development of our region and India,” he said quoting Modi and appealed to the constituent states of the region to utilise their potential.

Defence PRO said that based on a specific input of a cadre trying to terrorize and extort money from Changlang town, a column of security forces reached the location of the militant.

“On seeing the column approach the militant tried to flee, however, the alert column apprehended the escaping him. Changlang battalion under DAO Division has been carrying out unabated operations in South Arunachal Pradesh to keep the area peaceful and out of clutches of insurgents and this apprehension will go a long way in creating fear among the anti national elements in the area,” Colonel Konwer said. The nabbed cadre was identified as Hangnong Pangtha.

Gangtok, Oct 16 (PTI): BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav on Monday jibed Sikkim chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling by calling his SDF party a “Sikkim Dictatorial Front”.

He said the BJP and regional parties would offer a stronger alternative after the assembly elections due in 2019. “The Sikkim Democratic Front is not democratic at all, it is democratic for the sake of name only,” he told reporters at the state BJP office in Singtam Bazar, about 30 kilometres from Gangtok.

“The SDF is Sikkim Dictatorial Front actually,” Madhav said as he charged Chamling’s party with terrorising the opposition in the state and preventing the creation of a strong alternative to his government.

The senior BJP leader, who is the party’s in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast, decried a lack of good governance

Ram Madhav in the state and said the BJP and other “like-minded” regional parties have decided to come forward to change the situation in the state.

“We have found good governance lacking in Sikkim... There is a lot of corruption and development is also lacking,” he said, adding that the BJP wants democratic parties to come together in Sikkim to offer an alternative to the ruling SDF. Former

minister Balbir Subba and former Gangtok mayor KN Topgey and a number of political activists joined the BJP in Madhav’s presence.

Earlier in the day, Madhav held a closed-door meeting with Chief Minister Chamling’s younger brother and independent MLA RN Chamling at a hotel. They were said to have discussed a strategy to break the SDF’s hegemony in Sikkim since 1993.

RN Chamling had won as an independent candidate from the Rangrang-Yangyang assembly seat in south Sikkim in a bypoll in 2014 after the chief minister vacated the seat upon winning from two constituencies.

Chamling’s brother nurses chief ministerial ambitions and may seek the BJP’s support to send his elder brother packing from the chief minister’s post after the 2019 assembly polls, according to political commentators.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS): With Assembly elections scheduled in Meghalaya nest year, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Monday said his state will not see a repetition of Manipur and Goa, states where the BJP assumed power this year.

BSF officer attacked by cattle smugglers in Tripura Agartala, Oct 16 (PTI): Suspected cattle smugglers attacked a BSF commanding officer along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura in the early hours Monday.

The second-in-command rank officer, Deepak K Mondal, commanding the 145th battalion of the border guarding force is critical and has been air evacuated to Kolkata, a

senior official said.

The incident happened at about 2 am near the Belardeppa border post in the Sipahijala district of the state when the officer was allegedly hit by a four-wheeler being used by the smugglers.

He was patrolling the area with his team to check cattle smuggling and other illegal activities along the international border

which is “unfenced” here, he said.

Mondal saw some cattle smugglers and challenged them, he said, adding the officer along with his guard and driver tried to stop them.

“The group of about 25 smugglers were carrying bricks, lathis and machetes.

When challenged, the smugglers tried to

gherao the officer and the patrol party. Smugglers’ vehicle hit the officer from behind and he sustained severe injury to his head and legs and he is critical,” he said.

An accompanying Border Security Force jawan fired five rounds from his AK rifle to control the situation, he said adding the area has been cordoned off.

Govt committed to end hunger, says Sonowal

Jorhat, Oct 16 (PTI): A herd of wild elephants from Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam has strayed into human habitats, mostly occupied by tea garden workers in Jorhat district, and damaged their houses, a forest official said.

The herd has destroyed at least 14 dwelling units of tea garden labourers at Saikota, Katonibari and Ranjangaon villages on the periphery of the sanctuary in the last two days, Divisional Forest Officer Sapan Saikia said.

Tea plantations were also damaged by the herd, he said. Saikia said the elephant population in the sanctuary under Mariani forest range is increasing, forcing the animals to enter human habitations in search of food. Two tea garden labourers were attacked by the wild elephants near Katonibari tea estate a few days earlier, the DFO said. The 27.8 sq km Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is home to over 50 wild elephants and other endangered species such as Hoolock Gibbon and the Bengal Slow Loris.

SHILLONG, Oct 16 (Agencies): The state government will keep vigil in the run-up to the Assembly polls in the wake of recent reports of ULFA-Independent gaining ground in Garo Hills with the support of GNLA. Chief secretary Y Tsering said though police have control of law and order in Garo Hills, the Assam-based militant groups, especially ULFA, may become more active during the polls. The chief secretary said police level meetings between Assam and Meghalaya would be held for better co-ordination and also to check the cross-border movement of ULFA to Garo Hills during the polls. Police had recently busted the joint extortion racket of ULFA and GNLA in Garo Hills and arrested workers of the outfits. They have inputs that GNLA leader Sohan Shira and ULFA’s deputy commander-in-chief Drishti Rajkhowa have close coordination and their movements are in parts of South Garo Hills, bordering West Khasi Hills and East Garo Hills.

The Kameng Professional and Technical University Arunachal Pradesh Bill 2017 (Amended) was passed by the members to pave way for establishment of a private university at Bhalukpong in West Kameng district. The House referred the bill to a select committee under the chairmanship of Ngandam after various members had raised objections on certain clauses. The report of the Select Committee was tabled in the Assembly by Ngandam on Saturday. The second bill, the Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture Produce and Livestock Marketing (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2017, was tabled in the house by Agriculture Minister Wangki Lowang on Saturday which was also passed today.

Guwahati, Oct 16 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Monday said his government is committed to provide food, clothing and shelter to every citizen of the state.

He also said that a series of activities have been initiated. “Government of Assam will work with more resoluteness to ensure food, clothing and shelter for every citizen in the state,” Sonowal said.

According to him, these are fundamental requirements without which no one can live a dignified life. Addressing an event to mark the World Food Day organised by North East Institute of Advanced Studies here, the chief minister said the festival is celebrated to eradicate hunger from the world for which both the state and central governments have targeted to provide food security to every citizen.

“The state government is committed to improve living standards of poor and has taken up a series of activities,” Sonowal said.

He also appreciated the role played by North East Institute of Advanced Studies in spreading awareness on food security and underlined the importance of public awareness for success of the government initiatives.

Mentioning that 2.5 crore people of the state have been covered under Food Security Act, Sonowal informed that his government has lunched the Chief Minister’s Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana to boost economic growth of the people living in the villages in Assam. The Chief Minister also laid stress on soil testing for increasing the rate of food grain production in the state.

On this occasion, Sonowal released a vision document “Food Security, Assam - 2030”, prepared by the North East Institute of Advanced Studies.

A

Murder mystery

fter the Allahabad High Court acquitted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, the parents of Arushi, whose body was found murdered inside the family home at Noida on May 16, 2007, the ends of justice has not been served. The initial suspect was domestic help Hemraj but he too was found murdered two days later on the terrace of the house. The Talwars were acquitted not because they were innocent but because the two CBI teams had further botched up investigations which were badly mishandled earlier by the UP Police. It is not clear if the CBI will appeal against the high court judgement but till then the Talwars can breathe easy. The case has been full of discrepancies right from the start. The Allahabad High Court on October 12, 2017 overturned the lower court verdict, asserting that there was “no irresistible evidence” against the dentist couple. While the Noida-based dentist couple will walk of the jail, the sensational double-murder continues to remain a mystery as even the CBI court had held the Talwars guilty on the basis of evidence on record. The Talwars had remained in jail for four years after the lower court’s sentencing. For the Talwars, it is a moment of vindication after facing the ignominy of killing their only child but they won their freedom on the basis of benefit of doubt rather than getting absolved completely. The overturning of the lower court’s verdict may have given the Talwars not only a big relief but a sense of vindication about their innocence but it has yet settled the unanswered question as what now happens to the unsolved case? There are those who would maintain that the High Court’s acquittal means the Talwars are innocent but there are still many who still doubt their innocence. The High Court had stated that the Talwars cannot be convicted merely on the basis of suspicion. This is the biggest loophole of the theory that the Talwars murdered their own daughter to save the family honour as Arushi was caught with the servant Hemraj in a compromising position when the couple returned home late from work at their dental clinic. The obvious inference of the CBI theory was based on the premise of a young and lonely girl who sought companionship with the only other inmate of the house, Hemraj.

The entire case was based on circumstantial evidence without proof and now the focus should be on those involved in the probe. If it is needed, the court can also order another probe by experts in the field. In the US cases that were closed have been reopened after fresh leads were obtained and the subsequent probes have led to conviction of the guilty. It is also incumbent upon the court to demand a separate probe on the UP Police and CBI teams so as to fix accountability for botching up the case right from the start. This is needed since, if the Talwars are indeed innocent, then the probe teams have to pay for the tremendous damage done to their image and the trauma they suffered for a decade. The onus is now with the court to direct the CBI re-investigate the case with more competent officers of proven record. That is what justice demands.

Suppose a crisis were to come into your father’s or your brother’s life— are you there as a laborer to reap the harvest for Jesus Christ? Is your response, “Oh, but I have a special work to do!” No Christian has a special work to do. A Christian is called to be Jesus Christ’s own, “a servant [who] is not greater than his master” (John 13:16), and someone who does not dictate to Jesus Christ what he intends to do. Our Lord calls us to no special work— He calls us to Himself. “Pray the Lord of the harvest,” and He will engineer your circumstances to send you out as His laborer.

Post-mortem Free the Press: Joint Education awareness about universities and colleges

Public Statement from I Nagaland Newspapers

T

he Newspapers of Nagaland are once again compelled to inform the public about the constant intimidation, pressure and coercion perpetuated against the fourth pillar of democracy through its media houses.

The Nagaland newspapers are the only active and functioning private enterprise in Nagaland, which continue to render public service amidst a faltering infrastructure and a corrupt system that deprives citizens of even their most basic of needs.

The newspapers have a responsibility to present, not only the sorry state of affairs in a free and open manner to enable accountability, but also provide the platform where solutions, ideas and views are elicited from all cross sections of society.

However, in the process of upholding its responsibility, the media continues to be exposed to ongoing harassment and threats by individuals and organizations that coerce the media TO PUBLISH their articles and statements. Simultaneously, there are also people who take it upon themselves to determine what the media CANNOT PUBLISH. This also involves dissuading and threatening journalists and media houses from reporting critical stories that expose ground realities of Nagaland’s situation and condition.

The Nagaland newspapers deem such methods as a grave threat where journalists’ lives and livelihoods become endangered as soft targets while performing their duties without security.

In addition to journalists, another serious issue involves the safety and security of drivers delivering newspapers who travel at odd hours while transporting newspapers through villages and towns across Nagaland. Drivers are regularly stopped, harassed and even physically assaulted by miscreants.

Such coercive methods only undermine the very purpose and existence for a free press and its role of keeping society informed, and contributing to its health and vibrancy.

All these attacks on the press threaten the entire media establishment, including all the persons who are dedicated to bringing the news to the public – its readers.

Do Nagaland newspapers have the space to exercise freedom of the press? Is the Nagaland State government even aware of its responsibility to uphold the fourth pillar of democracy?

A free press is fundamental to a democratic society and intrinsically linked to freedom of expression which is a universal human right. It is not the prerogative of the politician or the bureaucrat. Nor, is it the privilege of the journalist. It is journalists, through their day-to-day work, who are exercising every citizen’s right to free speech by seeking and circulating news, information, ideas, opinions, perspectives and comments.

The press provides the public platform for diverse voices to be heard and to raise issues of accountability.

Nagaland newspapers are united and resolute in our stand against all coercions and threats in order to function freely as the fourth pillar of a democratic society. We have resolved to take a firm stand against all such attacks.

The Nagaland newspapers, therefore urge all sections of society to enable a free and vibrant fourth estate which is the only means to publicly confront all forms of political, economic and social suppression. Every citizen is responsible to ensure that the media is allowed to function freely.

ndia Northeast Tribal Community Welfare Society, under the aegis of its education wing Libra Consultancy, Notun Bosti, Dimapur have been creating awareness and inspecting universities particularly in education field since 2008. Our main objective is creating awareness to tribal students’ community about universities and colleges, affiliations, recognitions issues, agencies duping the students in various education areas etc for professional studies outside the state.

However, despite such awareness been spread in different ways by our society, many untoward incidents took place and many students have been duped in many ways by different agencies as we have all witnessed such cases in the last 5-6 years.

Past experiences have shown how many organizations , from outside state came with the false promise of providing help to tribal students and youth with different vocational training, career, job opportunities, teachers training etc but remain only at lip service and no real work done but made profits for themselves only at the cost of our tribal people.

During our recent visit to universities and colleges in North India, we encountered a so called Northeast group/organization from our neighboring states, who were formerly organizing education fairs by bringing disreputed institutes but since the education fairs did not materialize, they have change their business trend from education fairs to seminars for their monetary benefit. This group is joined by some former college representatives of North India who were kicked out of their work. In order to organize this so called combined seminar which is tentatively scheduled to be held in second or third week of November in Kohima and Dimapur, they planned to collaborate with some local student bodies, school authorities, reputed organizations and agencies to easily arrange these seminars in order to pull and get the confidence of the students .

In the name of education seminar they are going to bring some college representatives from North and south India who will only introduce their college and

courses for about 10-15 minutes each. While this group will collect detailed data of students and parents and give it to the colleges in return for money (Rs. 1 lakh per 1 seminar from each college), so as to enable the colleges to continuously contact the students for admission into their colleges after their final exam results are declared. Some of this disrepute colleges and universities though with high infrastructures ( engg, agri & allied courses & other professional courses) are on the verge of closing down due to lack of students and faculties, library and other facilities as per government orders and so are in dire need of enrollment to save their colleges .

Without knowing the status of these colleges / universities some gullible students and parents will be duped to take admission just by showing their courses/ infrastructure and other facilities, but students must remain cautious as more than 800 professional colleges are going to close down by government since they do not have the mandatory requirements plus percentage of students intake.

It’s a fact that good and proper colleges does not require publicity to get students, but only new ones and those which are about to be closed down are marketing themselves. For the sake of publicity, some colleges are planning to hold various competitions in schools for students and teachers and give awards. These gimmicks are not based on education and career development but just new tricks of trade to get students for admission in their colleges.

This group will be offering gifts and benefits etc to Principals/ heads of different schools so as to send students for the seminars and will be going to schools, colleges, coaching centres, and ask the students to attend these seminars, so we appeal to the authorities of school, colleges and coaching centres ,agencies etc not to entertain such activities as it is not for the welfare of students.

Our society has also been invited to work with them for this seminars and competitions by offering financial shares, but we refuse as it is not for the benefit of the tribal students but purely in the interest of the group. There is apprehension that there will be a

great flow of different admission process for 2018-19 admission session like free education schemes, scholarships for ST students, tribal concessions, education fairs etc for these colleges/universities with high infrastructure but poor status and some of which are going to close down by government in different parts of India. We request our state government to have stringent measures like some other neighboring states, whereby such unnecessary publicity of colleges, universities etc are strictly monitored and restricted, so that unrecognized and non- functioning colleges, universities will not lead our tribal students astray.

Established with the objective of creating awareness on any dubious issues, we advise the students and parents, heads of schools, colleges, student bodies etc to remain aware and vigilant as this so called seminars are not directed towards the welfare of the students but for the benefit of that particular group only. Anybody who deal with such groups should take responsibility of any untoward incidents in the future and not play blame game and washed off their hands after earning.

Many agencies flows into Kohima and Dimapur for admission related issues and duped a lot of tribal students, just like the “illegal migrants” flowing in Nagaland to make their life . If these two districts can be properly regulated at the earliest ,than such cheating and duping cases can be stopped in spreading to the other districts before any more damage is done.

So we particularly appeal student bodies like Angami Students Union Kohima and Dimapur Naga Students Union and other organizations, working in the interest of tribal students to strictly monitor such activities in their jurisdictions. At the same time we are ready to offer our professional assistance to any student bodies especially in spreading awareness relating to the tribal students.

Our society is purely against these kinds of spurious activities and advised all public to remain vigilant and alert for their welfare so that no student and parents is victimized in future.

Clarification on ‘rejoinder to Thepfulhouvi Solo’s write-up’

o whomever it concern, the purpose of my open Letter to the Governor on 22 Sept 2017 on local Print Media was to deflect unwholesome influences from sundry Sources that may bewitch the Naga Soul in erstwhile Naga Hills.

I did not say any lie, I hold no personal malice towards any Village nor do I covet Development of any Community. I only brought out the lack of any hard facts of Subhas Chandra Bose’s presence in the Naga Hills during the WW II, and I gave my

conscionable conclusions for saying so.

I was personally acquainted with many Chakhesang Leaders including Dusoi from the time he was Justice of the Chakhesang Tribal Council during 1949-1951, Medikhrü, Goyiepra, Wezülo, Zashiei, Wezülhi, Wetezülo, Rev. Dopor, Pulimo, Pudenyü, D u t s o n y ü , Va m v ü z o, Melhüpra, Lhouthiprü, Netsütso, Thinocho since the end of the War and 1946 onwards. I was a Polling Officer at Ciesezou during independent India’s First General Election in 1952,

not a single soul voted.

The Chakhesang Leaders of those days, none of them mentioned Subhas Chandra Bose having come to Naga Hills during the Japan War. The Story of Subhas Chandra Bose in Naga Hills came up only much later after the World War II. Nobody needs any Permission from anybody to express his/her views on any matter of Public Interest; everybody has the Right to freedom of expression.

I know the Naga does not like as Statues or Figures in Public Places of People

not connected to their History. Quite sometime ago the Head of Mahatma Gandhi was removed from his Bust at the Classic Island, Kohima.

Nobody has anything much to say if a Village decides to have a Statue in its Village. That is up to the will of the Village itself. My only view on such a thing is that it would not be fitting to the mainstream of Naga National feelings the Naga has shown since the Colonial Power declared Naga Hills a District in 1866 and their consistent objection to outside interference of their

culture since 1832.

The VDB Secretary of Ruzazo took an Issue of my Personal Private Domain to a Public Domain with intent to demean me in Public. An honorable selfrespecting Tenyimie does not take such an issue of personal private domain to the Public domain. ll Religions of the world cater to the spiritual needs of men so that they do not wander in the world of illusions. The goal of religion is to transform humanity into divinity.

All the same, religion can also cut down the life of its followers without any guilt and shame. The hurt we receive from close friends is deeper than that of strangers. Likewise, when religion hurts, the wounds are deep.

Healing becomes difficult for many patients. Off course, Religion is not to please men and women but to release them from the bondage of sin and selfishness. In the course of its earthly journey, it can trample many innocent members to death. This is the new “Spiritual Stampede” that is fast emerging along with the fast growing numbers of man-made Churches in Nagaland.

There are churches who

make personal law as the law of the church. The founder of the Church makes his own laws above the law of God. In the implementation of such blinded law, many get crushed under the rough wheel of religion. All that is lawful may not be beneficial for the members (1st Cor.10:23) I was saddened by the sudden demise of a young boy this year. Like any young boy, he must have dreamt of his future with lots of aspirations. But he was taken away

by God at the wink of an eye.

This is how death comes to us. Birth and death need no invitation. The shadow of death comes even forcefully to make their presence known to men. To the surprise of all, the young boy was denied funeral rites in his home town by the Pastor/Church leaders. I am sure they have turned the personal opinion of few people as a collage

of another new Holy Bible for their personal use. I appreciate their Christian life, but Christian charity was absolutely missing. What is missing is more important than what is present. The best prayers inside the Church and in front of public did not find a place in their life. At least they could have given God a place in the corner, but they bluntly refused. God was ostracized by the church leaders for their personal whims.The forsaken soul of the young boy must be praying before God, “Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

(Rom.7:24). I truly believe that the mercy of God will embrace such soul in heaven; Forsaken on earth to be received in heaven.

To deny a proper funeral rite for a baptized Christian is a sin. This sin is committed

by Church leaders in all pride and arrogance. The young

boy was denied Christian funeral. Why? Because he drinks sometimes. Since he drinks alcohol (sometimes), he cannot be given a proper funeral as per the norms of the Church. If this is the blanket to be thrown upon all, I believe only few will get the privilege of Christian funeral.

Is the church becoming a gathering of blind guides?

They lock people out of the Kingdom of heaven. They neither go in, nor allow others to go (Mt.23:13) I am certain that even the worst sons and daughters of a Pastor will be given the best funeral. Can a Pastor refuse Christian funeral for his own sons and daughters? He will not. A public leaders who is publicly corrupt and immoral to the core will be accorded an impressive funeral.

How many cars are on the road?

The traffic in Dimapur town is extremely pathetic and kudos to the traffic police for being able to handle the stress in a hot and humid place. I am certain everybody knows the fact that in Dimapur, one family own about five to six cars. We should all be responsible citizens and co-operate with one another in order to help a town progress and develop. Families must limit themselves to one or two cars. No one likes to get stuck in the traffic when you have somewhere to be, especially during an emergency. We don’t give it a second thought most of the time until we suddenly realise the many cars that have got us surrounded. Every family that own about ten cars shouldn’t complain about the traffic.

The government should also start providing the citizens with public bus services so one does not have to take a car all the way to the Supermarket.

If a bus can seat thirty passengers, that is equal to say about ten cars.

BJP trying to divide Bengal: Mamata

Ko l k ata , O c t 1 6 (AGENCIES): Bengal chief minister launched a broadside at BJP on Monday opposing the Centre’s decision to withdraw central forces from north Bengal hills and accusing the ruling party at the Centre of conspiring to divide Bengal.

She also emphasised that Darjeeling is an inseparable part of Bengal.

There are 15 companies of central forces in Darjeeling and the Centre wrote to Bengal on Sunday conveying its decision to withdraw 10 companies immediately and the rest by October 20. After the state government objected, the Centre decided to initially withdraw seven companies.

“I have written to both the Prime Minister and Union home minister, where I have said the withdrawal of the central forces from the hills is unfortunate especially at a time was life is returning to normal there. The decision was unfortunate, unethical,

undemocratic and unconstitutional,” she said to reporters after a meeting with the hill parties at the state secretariat.

“I also had a telephonic discussion with the Union home minister, whom I know as a good person and I hope something positive will come from Centre’s side now,” added Mamata Banerjee.

Without naming anyone, the chief minister said that she has got specific information that “a central minister” is perpetuating turbulence in the hills just to ensure BJP’s victory in the constituency.

“We have got specific evidence. If necessary, we

will make the proof public at the appropriate time,” she claimed.

The chief minister also accused the BJP state president Dilip Ghosh of triggering disturbance in the hills.

“A report was sent to the Centre from the BJP party office in the state, following which the decision to withdraw the central forces was taken,” alleged the chief minister.

Ghosh reacted in the evening, saying the state failed to maintain law and order and used the Central forces to save its skin. “You cannot use Central forces to salvage a crisis after taking anti-people measures,” retorted Ghosh.

Banerjee participated in the third meeting with three hill parties on Monday. The next meeting will be held at Pintail village in north Bengal on November 21.

Mamata Banerjee also criticised the Centre for entertaining Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung. “While the Centre

can have dialogue with someone booked under UA(P)A, why can’t they talk to those forces who are democratic?”

Gurung is on the run for the past few weeks after being charged under the anti-terror Act. “If smaller states such as Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh or even Delhi can have so many companies of central forces, why do they always withdraw forces from Bengal?” the chief minister asked.

The bipartite meetings are being held even while the hill parties are demanding tripartite meetings that Union home minister Rajnath Singh had promised. In a statement on September 26, Singh said he asked the Union home secretary to convene a meeting to discuss “all related issues” of Darjeeling within a fortnight. In the same statement, he appealed to Gurung to withdraw the bandh. Gurung responded and called off the indefinite strike the next morning.

Punjab to fund crop loan waiver Chandigarh, Oct 16 (AGENCIES): Having failed so far to make any headway in getting the state’s borrowing limit increased from the Centre to fund a promised loan waiver to farmers, Punjab’s Congress government on Monday turned towards its own resources and decided to use rural development fund and market fee charged on sale of agriculture produce towards funding the crop loan waiver.

In a meeting chaired by CM Capt Amarinder Singh, the state cabinet decided to amend provisions of the Rural Development Act of 1987 and Punjab Agriculture Produce Markets Act of 1961 to make possible that funds meant only for rural development could be used for the debt waiver.

This will have to be passed by the assembly where the party has brute majority.

People to decide if Rahul can pose a challenge to Modi: Nitish Patna, Oct 16 (AGENCIES): Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said here on Monday that the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as the Congress president may be a settled issue but the question as to whether he would become PM after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, would be decided by the people of the country.

“I have been hearing about Rahul’s expected elevation for quite some time now. If he becomes the Congress president, it is good. Even otherwise, he is the all in all in his party,” Kumar said while talking to the media after his weekly Lok Samvad programme.

Kumar was responding to a question on Rahul Gandhi’s imminent anointment as Congress chief, after Diwali, and whether he will be in a position to challenge the NDA in the next general election.

Mumbai, Oct 16 (PTI): Gold prices bounced Rs 185 per 10 grams at the bullion market here Monday following uptick in festive and wedding season demand from jewellers and retailers amid signs of a strong global trend. Silver recaptured the Rs 40,000 per kg mark by climbing Rs 255 on increased offtake by industrial units.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) moved up by Rs 185 to close at Rs 29,860 per 10 grams from last Friday’s closing level of Rs 29,675.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also rose by a similar margin to end at Rs 30,010 per 10 grams as against Rs 29,825 previously. Silver (.999 fineness) climbed by Rs 255 per kg to close at Rs 40,110 as compared to Rs 39,855 earlier. Globally, a slightly firmer dollar weighed on gold, while ongoing tensions over Iran and North Korea and recent weak US economic data lifted bullion above the psychological USD 1,300 level.

Spot gold was unchanged at USD 1,304.50 an ounce in early trade.

Silver rose 0.1 per cent to USD 17.37 an ounce after hitting USD 17.44, its highest since mid-September.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS): Bharti Airtel and Millicom International Cellular, through their respective subsidiaries, on Monday announced the closure of a deal to combine their operations in Ghana.

Under the joint agreement, Airtel and Millicom will have equal ownership (50:50) and governance rights in the combined entity, which will have revenues of around $300 million, said a statement here. Roshi Motman, the current CEO of Tigo Ghana, will be the new CEO of the joint entity.

The merged entity will become Ghana’s second largest mobile operator with close to 10 million subscribers, the statement said.

“The combined networks of the two companies will cover more than 80 per cent of Ghana’s population, in particular in villages and far flung areas, and serve customers with affordable world-class voice/ data services, affordable global roaming and mobile banking services. It will also have one of the largest sales and distribution network to enhance customer convenience,” the statement added.

Airtel, Millicom close deal for combine operations

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI): At least 66 Sophisticated Currency Verification and Processing (CVPS) machines are being used for counting junked Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes that were deposited post demonetisation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said.

A global tender has been floated for the procurement of new CVPS machines, the central bank said in reply to an RTI query on details of such machines being used for counting demonetised notes in the country.

“As on date 59 CVPS are in operation in RBI for the purpose. In addition to this, seven CVPS available with commercial banks are also being used,” it said in response to the RTI application filed by a PTI correspondent.

It said seven CVPS machines were in the process of being leased, while seven others available with commercial banks were also being used.

Referring to leasing charges, the central bank said the information sought was in the nature of commercial confidence and therefore exempt from dis-

The overall forex market sentiment got a boost from upbeat export data and narrowing of trade deficit coupled with softening inflation. The record rally in domestic equities too helped the rupee. Extending its strong upmove, the rupee resumed firmly higher at 64.75 against last weekend close of 64.93 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market due to frantic dollar unwinding by exporters and banks. It later strengthened to hit a fresh intra-day high of 64.69 before winding up the day at 64.74, showing a smart rise of 19 paise, or 0.29 per cent.

Inflation, based on the wholesale price index (WPI), had soared to a fourmonth high of 3.24 per cent in August 2017. It was 1.36 per cent in September 2016. The government data released today showed that inflation in food articles tapered to 2.04 per cent in September, as against 5.75 per cent in August on a yearly basis.

M o s c ow, O c t 1 6 (IANS): Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a decree to impose a number of bans on North Korea in compliance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2321, a post on Russia’s legal document portal said on Monday.

Russia will, most notably among other measures, suspend scientific and technical cooperation with individuals and institutions representing North Korea, according to the 39-page decree, XInhua reported.

On November 30, 2016, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted the Resolution 2321 in response to Pyongyang’s fifth nuclear test on September 9. She asserted that food and farming policies of the government needed to be relooked and restrategised by strengthening local food and farming systems which required the concerted effort of diverse stakeholders particularly the government.

National level consultation held in Delhi Zunheboto town prepares for platinum celebration

DIMAPUR: Under the ministry of rural devolvement government of India, a two-day national level consultation on livelihood development and diversification was held in New Delhi on October 10 and 11 in the campus of Indian Agricultural Research Institute Nela ground New Delhi.

Prime minister Narendra Modi highlighted on various flagship programmes which were already implemented and those which were in the pipeline to uplift the living standard of rural farmers. He also said that free electrification, LPG connections and many other necessary facilities would be provided to BPL within a few years. He further added that such kind of consulta-

tion programme would go a long way in healing the scars and pave way for various projects pertaining to rural development.

Govt issues advisory to maintain secrecy after PM’s itinerary is leaked

New Delhi, Oct 16 (AGENCIES): The Ministr y of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed state governments to adhere to the Officials Secrets Act (OSA) to maintain secrecy of classified documents and VVIP programmes after minute-to-minute details of a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi were found circulating on social media.

Advisories in this regard have been issued to all states twice this year, the latest being last month. Sources in MHA maintain that all precautions are being taken to avoid security breaches.

The trigger for these advisories was related to a visit made by PM Modi Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district in August last year. Entire details of the PM’s visit issued by Special Protection Group (SPG) were found to be circulating on Whatsapp mobile application before the date of the visit.

The visit was held to commemorate the sacrifices of freedom fighters on the Quit India day and launch the ‘Azadi 70 Saal-Yaad Karo Qurbani’ programme.

In January this year Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of all states and Union Territories were made aware of the “leakage”.

“During the Prime Minister’s visit to Alrajpur, Madhya Pradeshon August 9, 201, the minuteto-minute programme of his visit issued by SPG

was found circulating in the State on Whatsapp mobile application, breaching security instructions,” the letter issued by Ministry of Home Affairs on January 13 states.

“Several instances of leakage of sensitive security documents of classified category circulating on social media have come to notice in the recent past.

Such leakages of secret official documents of visit proramme have serious security implications and can lead to any untoward incidents,” the MHA advisory stated.

also communicated that all officials must adhere to OSA to safeguard classified documents and take stringent corrective measures to maintain secrecy of VVIP programmes.

While the matter should have ideally been resolved following the Januar y advisor y, the leaks do not seem to have stopped. In another advisory to state authorities on September 13, the MHA stated, “despite an advisory issued by the ministry, during the recent visit of the Prime Minister the minute-minute programme was found to be circulating in the social media”.

The second advisory warns the states that such leaks could be used by “inimical elements” however does not specify details of which visit were leaked on social media.

When asked to comment about the advisory, an MHA official said, “Such leakages are considered security breaches and all precautions are being taken by the ministry to avoid such instances”.

Rajesh and Nupur Talwar released from Dasna Jail Dasna, Oct 16 (AGENCIES): A tearful Rajesh and Nupur Talwar walked out of the district prison here on Monday evening.

The couple was behind bars for the alleged murder of their daughter Aarushi, in the year 2008, for a little over 3 years and ten months.

They were acquitted by the Allahabad High Court on October 12.

The dentist couple, who were picked up by Talwar’s brother Dinesh around 5 pm, were crying as they clung to him before managing an exit as they waded through a frenzied media contingent under police protection.

According to prison sources, the couple’s release order was delivered to the Dasna District Prison around 4.30 pm following which the other formalities related to their release such as the filling of a security bond were undertaken.

“Nothing can make us happier. This wouldn’t have been possible without Dinesh Talwar and Rajesh’s and Nupur’s steadfast belief in their innocence,” said the couple’s counsel Tanveer Ahmed Mir. The couple is expected to offer prayers at a local temple in Noida.

My meeting with Bal Thackeray upset Sonia Gandhi: Pranab New Delhi, Oct 16 (AGENCIES): For mer President Pranab Mukherjee has said that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was upset with him over his meeting late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray in the run-up to the 2012 presidential election despite her advice against such an interaction.

Revealing this in his book The Coalition Years, Mukherjee said he had met Thackeray on the advice of Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party, a part of the Congress-led UPA-II government.

He said that during his campaign visit to Mumbai on July 13, 2012, he had gone to meet Thackeray at his residence after the Shiv Sena leader had extended his party’s support to him despite being a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

“I took a decision to meet Thackeray despite Sonia Gandhi’s disapproval because I felt that the man who had broken away from his traditional coalition partner to support my candidature, should not feel humiliated,” Mukherjee said in his book.

Pawar said Thackeray would consider it a personal insult if Mukherjee did not meet him during his visit to Mumbai.

“Sonia Gandhi was not enthusiastic about my meeting Bal Thackeray and advised me to avoid it if possible. Sonia Gandhi’s reservations about Thackeray were based on her own perception of his policies,” he said.

After his return to Delhi, Mukherjee said, Congress leader Girija Vyas had met him and told him that Gandhi and Ahmed Patel, the political secretary to the Congress president, were upset about the meeting with Thackeray.

“I returned to Delhi, and the following morning Girija Vyas called on me. She informed me that Sonia Gandhi and Ahmed Patel were upset about my meeting with Thackeray.

I understood the cause of their unhappiness but, as I have explained, I did what I believed was right. I had to keep in mind the sensitivity of the advice given by Sharad Pawar — an important ally of the UPA-II,” he said.

Plague outbreak in Madagascar now threatens largest cities

ANTANANARIVO, Oct 16 (AGENCIES): As plague cases rose last week in Madagascar’s capital, many city dwellers panicked. They waited in long lines for antibiotics at pharmacies and reached through bus windows to buy masks from street vendors. Schools have been cancelled, and public gatherings are banned.

The plague outbreak has killed 63 people in the Indian Ocean island nation, Madagascar’s government says. For the first time, the disease long seen in the country’s remote areas is largely concentrated in its two largest cities, Antananarivo and Toamasina.

In some cases, it can kill within 24 hours. Like the bubonic form, it can be treated with common antibiotics if caught in time.

The WHO calls plague a “disease of poverty” caused in part by unsanitary living conditions. Madagascar has a per capita GDP of about $400, and national programs to control the disease have been “hampered by operational and management difficulties,” according to a report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

“In the light of the disproportionate use of force carried out by the security forces, the EU and its member states will suspend invitations to the Commander-inchief of the Myanmar/Burma armed forces and other senior military officers and review all practical defence cooperation,” the European Council said in a statement.

“The Council may consider additional measures if the situation does not improve but also stands ready to respond accordingly to positive developments,” added the statement from the EU’s executive body.

Hornbill festival for free and also put up their works for sale and exhibition which will be organized by Art & Culture Department, Government of Nagaland.

Chinnamul which was directed by one of the theatre director from Assam, Asim Kumar Nath depicts the story of the people who strayed away from the mainstream of tradition and culture. It also takes an in-depth look at the crisis that emanates from surrendering identity and culture in accepting an alien culture.

Mokokchung, Oct 16 (NPN): Rongpang Reju totally dominated a lackluster Telongjem FC in the third quarterfinal of the ongoing MDFA Trophy 2017 to win the match 6-1 here at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Monday.

Rongpang Reju, which was considered as an underdog team of the tournament, emerged as a team to be reckoned with as they outplayed Telongjem FC, a favorite of the tournament which has some well known players. With today’s win, Rongpang Reju is emerging as a strong contender for the coveted title. Striker Temjenmeren (Jersey No 7) of Rongpang Reju was at his best as he scored a hat

trick in the first half. His first goal came in the 9th minute through a penalty kick which was awarded for unsporting play inside the D-Box by the Telongjem FC. His second goal was more spectacular as he received the ball from his fellow player and kicked it straight over a dazed Telongjem FC goalkeeper. And he completed his hat-trick with a clean header.

Telongjem FC also counter attacked and their efforts paid off as Bendangtoshi (Jersey No 11) chased the ball through a gap in the Rongpang Reju’s defense line and scored a goal at the 41st minute. The second half also witnessed an equally contested match. Telongjem FC, as expected went on the

offensive and bolstered their striking force, whilst the Rongpang Reju played soft.

Call it luck or call it football circumstances where anything and everything can happen, Rongpang Reju’s forward Jungpetrong scored the fourth goal in the 80th minute. The Telongjem FC defense was in disarray, and Temjenmeren of Rongpang Reju again rose to the occasion as he scored the fifth and sixth goal successively at the 82nd and 90th minute.

Thereby literally sealing the fate of Telongjem FC’s adventure in the MDFA Trophy 2017.

Mumbai, Oct 16 (PTI): Seven foreign coaches in four disciplines have been roped in by the Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ), an outfit founded by sports icons Prakash Padukone and Geet Sethi, to train 80 junior and senior sportspersons within the country and overseas.

This has been done as OGQ’s research and experience over the last two Olympic cycles “has shown that foreign coaches bring in invaluable knowledge on the techniques, strategies and training methods used by top athletes worldwide which is important to implement in training of our Indian athletes as they prepare for the Olympic Games”, a release from OGQ said Monday.

More than 40 of these trainees are being supported

by OGQ, the release said.

The foreign coaches appointed by OGQ are: Charles Atkinson of England for boxing, Kim Hagyong of Korea for archery, Vladimer Mestvirishvili of Georgia for wrestling as well as Kim Seonil (Korea), Munkhbayar Dorjsuren (born in Mongolia but a German citizen) Lazslo Scuzak (Hungary) and Anton Belak (Slovak Republic) for shooting.

D.Chullo of Upper Defence Chingmelen was cautioned with a yellow card. In the second match, Scavenger Hunt FC continued their winning streak by defeating United Tuensang Tornados 2-0. Ko h i m a , O c t 1 6 (NPN): Defending champions Nagaland Police (DGP team Red) beat visiting team from Manipur, Esii United FC 2-1 to book their semi-finals berth at the ongoing 18th NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy on Monday. Tangkhul Students’ Union (TKS) also progressed into the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Tiema-Khe Kidima.

ing organized by Angami Students’ Union under the theme “Goal for peace” at Khuochiezie Kohima.

In the first match, Nagaland Police team edged past Esii United FC 2-1.

The thrilling and competitive match saw both team displaying equal strength and skill. While tussling to dominate each other, Kekhrieletuo (11) took advantage of the neglected defence and scored the first goal for Nagaland Police (Red) in the 23rd minute.

The second goal for Nagaland Police was netted by Lipok Sashi (7) in the 39th minute.

After the lemon break, the desperate Esii United FC tried hard to equalize the goals with some vicious attacks but the cops denied them any clear chance.

Esii boys finally scored a goal in the 79th minute through the boot of Prokreni (11). With only a goal behind, a renewed Esii United gave one final push for an equalizer. However,

the defending champions stood their ground to move into the semi-finals.

Benjo (8) of Esii United FC was sent off from the field after he was cautioned twice with yellow card. Kapani (7) of Esii United FC and Atun (6) and Sanyam (4) of Nagaland police were also cautioned for unsporting behaviour.

Meanwhile former champions Tangkhul Students’ Union (TKS) eased into the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over Tiema-Khe Kidima. Khongreiwo (14) found the first goal in the 6th minute and the second goal was netted by Thothanmung (9) in the 20th minute.

Naga fighters shine at Yoddha Fighting C’ship Dimapur, Oct 16 (NPN): Ketholetuo Nagi became the first Yoddha Fighting Championship (YFC) amateur strawweight champion after beating Kishan Gupta in a YFC event in Mumbai on October 15.

He beat Gupta by unanimous decision after five gruelling rounds in the main event of the amateur fight card. With the win, Ketholetuo also became the second Naga fighter to have won a Mixed Martial Arts championship belt after Imkong Jamir, the YoddhaFC amateur featherweight champion.
