KOHIMA, MAR 3 (NPN): Even after eight years have passed since laying of the foundation for the first medical college (Nagaland Medical College) at Phrie-

bagei in Kohima district and despite umpteen efforts, the project appears to have run aground. It may be recalled that the foundation stone was laid by chief minister Neiphiu Rio on March 3, 2014. Nagaland has two

centrally approved medical colleges- one in Kohima and the other in Mon while CIHSR in Dimapur, which has all existing facilities has not been considered. A delegation from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) visited the site on Thursday and reviewed the ongoing construction work in addition to the under-construction 400-bed teaching hospital. Speaking to Nagaland Post, IQVIA senior consultant Amit Saini said the Department of Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) proposed construction of a 400-bed hospital in 2018 and submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. During a visit to Na-

galand Medical College at NHAK in 2018, Saini said Union health secretary Preeti Sudan saw the space constraints for expansion and proposed the 400-bed hospital at the proposed medical college. Subsequently, engineers from the ministry visited the site, reviewed and assessed the college and forwarded the project to JICA. (Cont’d on p-8)

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the H&FW department was mulling renaming the proposed Nagaland Medical College to Nagaland Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, though this could not be confirmed till the filing of this report.

Mad rush towards urbanisation: Rio Correspondent KOHIMA, MAR 3 (NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday while stating that there was a mad rush towards urbanisation, said that the decadal urban growth in the State was 67.38%, which was double the national average of 31.18%. Addressing the inaugural programme of the new office building of the Directorate of Municipal Affairs here on Wednesday, Rio said that even though there was a mad rush, many did not understand the concept of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). He explained that when there was heavy rush in towns, it was imperative that there should be proper regulations, including town planning and building by-laws, else he said the urban areas would become unliveable. He recalled how Kohima town was once rated as India’s second most unliveable town, but it was ranked 27 recently, thereby showing tremendous improvement. He mentioned that many changes had taken place in all towns, especially in district headquarters, while stressing that public awareness and participation had to go handin-hand. Expressing concern over traffic congestion in the State Capital, the chief minister suggested the department to identify spaces where all localised events could be

held. Citing the instance of traffic jams throughout the town, he remarked that if markets were concentrated in one area, then citizens would have to rush to that particular area. He also called for constructing farmers’ markets so that women vendors did not have to sit on the road side and where the farmers could bring their produce, sell and pay taxes for the facilities provided, which would ease traffic. He asked the department to identify government land, buildings or even buy land in this regard. Urging municipal and town councils to develop assets, Rio directed the department to also work out a formula on how to use these else, he said these should be privatised to prevent them from becoming eyesores. He also called for incorporating Naga designs and motifs in buildings, while hoping that the new building would boost the morale of employees and improve the working atmosphere. He further asked the de par tment to work on waste management, improve cleanliness, enhance the liveability ranking and display proper signboards on roads. He also suggested the department to ensure that old buildings were well maintained, identify a colour of the building so that different colonies could have different building colours

and constructed with Naga motifs, adding that would will be big eye-catcher for tourists while also preserve Naga identity. In his address, Urban development & municipal affairs (UD&MA) adviser Dr Niekiesalie Nicky Kire hoped that with the inauguration of the new building, the officers and staff would be able to work more efficiently and effectively He also informed the gathering that the building had an emergency exit route for fire, lifts and ramps for differently-abled persons so that the office was more easily accessible for all sections of people. Speaking on the occasion, additional chief engineer (urban engineering wing) Kevide Nakhro said the new three-storey building had 30 rooms, including a conference hall, mini conference hall, library and other utilities like public toilets, foyers, balcony, etc, in each floor. He said the project was sanctioned under SPA during 2013-2014 at an approved cost of Rs 507.31 lakh with the funding pattern 90:10. With incorporation of additional items, Nakhro said an additional fund of Rs 77.69 was required, making the overall cost Rs 585 lakh. The building was constructed by M/s K Nakhro and Sons. UD&MA principal secretary I Himato Zhimomi chaired the programme.

Mnp poll violence: houses, vehicles damaged Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAR 3: With two days left for the second and phase of polls on March 5, Manipur’s Thoubal and Kakching districts turned into battle ground after a spate of poll-related violence incidents were reported. Though there was no human casualties reported, over a dozen of houses and vehicles were damaged across the two districts in the last 24 hours. Miscreants suspected t o b e wo r k e r s o f t h e candidates in the fray also used guns and petrol bombs in what candidates termed as intimidations to their supporters. In one of the violence incidents reported in Sugnu AC of Kakching district around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, suspected workers and supporters of BJP candidate from Sugnu AC smashed more than a dozen vehicles. Reports said that two Gypsy vehicles, one each of

The attackers also allegedly fired several rounds of gun shots. Congress candidate T Ranjit Singh, who is seeking re-election from the assembly constituency, strongly condemned the violence and urged people to shun violence and allow voters to use their franchise without any fear and intimidation. In another poll-related violence, as many as five

houses reportedly belonging to workers of Congress candidates in WangjingTencha AC were attacked by guns, stones and other deadly weapons around 11.30 pm on Wednesday. Strongly condemning the violence perpetrated by suspected BJP workers, advisor of the WangjingTentha Youth Congress P Sanatomba, appealed to everyone not to indulge in intimidation of workers and voters. “ L e t ’s a l l ow t h e voters to cast their votes in a free and fair manner. Such kind of violence is

against democracy and is the attitude of being ruled by a dictator,” he added. In yet another pollrelated incident in the same AC, two houses were damaged after miscreants hurled petrol bombs on them in the wee hours on Thursday. Timely intervention by the villagers however saved the houses from being completely razed. In Heirok assembly, three shops belonging to active workers of the BJP were vandalized by miscreants at Kakmayai village around 10.30 pm on

Wednesday. The miscreants also re por tedly opened fire several rounds of guns in the air while carrying out arson. Denouncing the vandalism and intimidation, villagers staged a protest on Thursday. BJP candidate and sitting MLA Th Radheshyam who visited the damaged shops today blamed workers of his rival Congress candidate for the vandalism. A public meeting after the protest also resolved to fix responsibility on the Congress if violence incidents occurred in the village further. The second and final phase of the 60-seat Manipur legislative Assembly will take place on March 5 (Saturday) in which voting will be held in 22 Assembly segments spread across 10 districts of the state. The proposal for repoll in these polling stations was recommended based

on facts and information received and re por ted from respective Returning Officers (ROs), the CEO said. Lahkmen Rymbui

SHILLONG, MAR 3 (PTI): M e g h a l aya E d u c a t i o n Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has assured teachers under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan of releasing their two months’ pending salaries. His comment came after educators had on Wednesday staged protests against the state government for not clearing their due salaries for five months from October last year. A delegation of the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association met the minister and urged him to release their pending salaries.

Altogether, 12,541 teachers work in SSA schools across the northeastern state. “I have assured that the government will try its best to release at least two months’ salaries of the teachers at the earliest,” Rymbui said on Wednesday. According to him, around Rs 145 crore is required to clear five months’ salaries of the SSA teachers. The government will clear the remaining three months’ pending salaries after the Centre sanctioned fund for the education scheme, the minister said. He said the government will make efforts to resolve issues related to implementation of the SSA programme in the state. department”, the Congress leader said it is “a complete violation of the Election Commission’s model code of conduct and is nothing but bribery, corruption. “It shows the principles of the doubleengine BJP government. These payments have taken place when the majority of state government employees have not received salaries for two months, mid-day meal cooks have not been paid for 18 months, majority of former state government employees have not received their pensions in the last six months and almost all pensioners have not received their retirement benefits.” Despite attempts to contact Manipur government officials for reactions, comments were not readily available. The allegation comes at a time when non -BJP parties were demanding

repolling in the districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi on grounds of booth capturing, destruction of EVMs at several polling stations and proxy voting by armed militant groups. The Election Commission, during the day, ordered repoll in 12 polling stations of five assembly constituencies. Earlier on February 23, Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a poll rally at Churachandpur had announced if the people voted for the BJP, the government would solve the Kuki insurgency issue On February 25, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) had announced in a statement for those in “their operational area” to support BJP candidates. Oppn trying to divide society for votes: Modi Cong rivals try to divide society on

JAUNPUR (UP), MAR 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday alleged the Opposition is trying to divide society for votes at a time when India needs to be strong to deal with “serious challenges” the world faces. The possible reference to the war in Ukraine came during a poll meeting during which Modi also said the BJP’s victory in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh election is necessary to ensure the state’s journey on the path of development does not stop. “The time is coming up with serious challenges for the whole world. So your vote is making India strong to deal with these challenges. On one hand, there are those who are busy dividing society for votes even at such times, while on the other side there are BJP and our allies who are devoting themselves wholeheartedly in the development of the country,” he said. Taking a jibe at the opposition, he said that dynasts who only try to fill their ‘tijori’ (vault) can never fulfill the dreams of the poor. He claimed that voting in the state so far has

Narendra Modi confirmed the victory of the BJP alliance. In the sixth phase of polling being held on Thursday, votes are being cast in favour of the BJP, the prime minister told the meeting. “The BJP’s victory in the assembly elections is necessary because Uttar Pradesh is moving on the path of development and it should not stop now,” Modi said. “We have to ensure that the victory of the BJP is as grand as it was in 2017.” Terming the previous Samajwadi Party government “mafiawadi” (those who help mafia elements), Modi said a BJP government was needed in the state to ensure Jaunpur is “mafia-free”. Attacking the previous

Akhilesh Yadav government, the PM said, “Pariwarwadis’ (dynasts) can never fulfill the dreams of the poor. The way of these ‘mafiawadis’ to run the government is to loot Uttar Pradesh and crush the dreams of the poor. They never see your pain, your trouble.” Referring to SP president Yadav, Modi said he used to send letters to the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister from Delhi, telling him time and again that the Indian government is giving money and “you can build houses for the poor”. But they didn’t care about the life of the poor, the PM alleged “They had only one job to do -- fill their vault from

wherever they got chance. They knew that Modi will ask for the account of money he is sending from Delhi and they will be caught. So they did not worry about the poor,” he said. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana only one house was sanctioned in Jaunpur when Yadav was in power in Uttar Pradesh, Modi said, adding that in 2017 when the BJP government came, 30,000 houses were sanctioned here and 15,000 of them have already been completed. Referring to encephalitis, a deadly disease that used to spread in the Purvanchal (east UP) region, he alleged dynasts left the Purvanchal to suffer the havoc of encephalitis But now a network of medical colleges is being created there, he said, adding the government taken “a very big decision” to reduce the fees for half of the seats in private medical colleges to bring them at par with that in government medical colleges. “These dynasts had left the people of Purvanchal on their own. These people had tried their best to divide Uttar Pradesh on caste lines,

but the people of the state understood their designs and stood unitedly today. The reason is clear --Niyat, Niti, Nishtha and Netritva’ (intention, policy, loyalty and leadership),” he said. The BJP’s policy is that whatever schemes are made, they should reach every beneficiary and without middlemen. He alleged that the people who are accused of burning the houses of Dalit families in Bhadethi village of Jaunpur are being blessed by the dynasts. “So the poor, downtrodden and backward classes need to be very careful with such people.” On the Covid pandemic, the PM said, “Our government stood with you sincerely during the pandemic. We sent money directly to the account of the poor. When the poor, Dalit and backward families needed ration, we also started the scheme of giving free ration to all.” He said that Covid vaccine was needed to protect everyone from coronavirus. “So, we started a free vaccination campaign.” Modi also attacked the Opposition on their stand on Covid vaccine.

caste, religious lines: Priyanka

S O N B H A D R A / CHANDAULI (UP), MAR 3 (PTI): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday accused rival parties of trying to divide society on the lines of caste and religion and said that due to this, people’s actual problems like inflation and unemployment are ignored. Targeting the ruling BJP, she said it is the government’s duty to mitigate problems of the public but in Uttar Pradesh, the issue of stray cattle was created by the government’s policies. Addressing a public meeting in Sonbhadra, Vadra said, “The elections are a time (for the public) to gauge which party should be brought to power to serve the people for the next five years. However, parties like BJP, BSP and Samajwadi Party try to divide society on the lines of caste and religion. Because of this, the actual problems of people like inflation, lack of jobs and lack of amenities are neglected.” “The biggest strength in a democracy is vote, which can make or destroy

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra your future. Voters need to be aware and vote for people who are ready to work for you round the clock,” she said. The Congress leader said her party gave forest rights to tribals but now they are being forced to vacate their land using bulldozers. She also mentioned the July 2019 Umbha massacre in which 11 tribals were killed and accused the administration and police of inaction. Vadra blamed the policies of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government for the problem of stray cattle in the state. “It is the duty of the people in power to mitigate troubles of people but in UP, the problem of stray cattle was caused by the policies of the government. Our government in Chhattisgarh

has managed to resolve this issue,” the Congress leader said. Vadra said the BJP government did not provide jobs to people in the last five years and is only promising to do so now when the elections are here. The BJP claims that it gives people free ration and deposits money in their accounts, she said. “You need to understand the mindset that they (BJP) will never give you jobs. The government has not done anything to promote agriculture and small industries that generate a lot of employment. On the other hand, they didn’t even give government jobs in the last five years and are now promising you jobs,” she added. Vadra reiterated her party’s poll promises. “We will solve the issue of stray cattle and provide compensation of Rs 3,000 per acre in case your crop is destroyed by stray cattle. We will buy sugarcane for Rs 400 per quintal. To generate employment for women, we will ensure 25 per cent reservation in recruitment for women in the police force,” she said.

Cong to form govt in U’khand with at least 40 seats : PCC PITHORAGARH, MAR 3 (PTI): The Congress on Thursday said it is going to form the government in Uttarakhand claiming it will win at least 40 seats in the 70-member state assembly. “We are getting a minimum 40 and a maximum of 48 seats in the state with over 42 per cent vote share, 10 per cent more than what we got in 2017 elections,” PCC general secretary (organisation) Mathuradutt Joshi said here.

Out of the 29 seats of the Kumaon region, the Congress will get at least 18 seats while it will also get a major chunk out of 30 seats located in three districts of Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar, he claimed. “We are also doing well on seats located in the hilly districts of Garhwal including Uttarkashi, Pauri, Chamoli and Rudraprayag as people in these districts have voted for employment,” he said.

MVA devoted to fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim: Fadnavis

The Congress leader said the indicators which have emerged after the February 14 polling have shown that people have voted en masse for the Congress party. “A f t e r t h e s e i n d i c a t o r s emerged, several BJP leaders have come to congratulate us, we are also getting feelers from senior bureaucrats in the state that Congress is forming government in the state,” said Joshi. “Even pre-election indicators

favoured Congress party, as the gathering in Rahul Gandhi’s meeting was three times more than that the turnout at Narendra Modi’s in Dehradun. The gathering at Priyanka Gandhi’s rally was also spontaneous,” he said. The Congress’ promises about removing unemployment, bringing down inflation and not letting the LPG cylinder price exceed Rs 500 appears to have worked in favour of the party, he said.

A total 676 candidates are in the fray.

PM Narendra Modi has named ‘Operation Ganga’ in election rallies in a bid to make it an election issue,” Chaudhary said. “I want to remind you all that three decades ago, lakhs of Indians were stranded in Kuwait during a war there. They were taken to Jordan from Kuwait by buses and then brought to India by air. The whole world had lauded our efforts and the evacuation found a mention in the Guinness Book of World Record also,” he said. “No name was given to that operation then but now this evacuation has been given a name as it

This is an insult to a woman,” Bhattacharya said. The TMCP organised protest marches in various districts of the state against the incident. The black flag protest in Varanasi drew bitter criticism from TMC, the party which Banerjee founded and heads, in Kolkata on Wednesday.

He added that he was hopeful that a “good name like Ganga” will ensure everything will be good in the end and the stranded Indians would return home safe. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is holding a mega show of strength in Varanasi on Thursday through a joint rally with his alliance partners. Besides RLD, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has also joined him for the event. Keshav Dev Maurya of Mahan Dal, Krishna Patel of Apna Dal (Kameravadi), Shivpal Yadav of Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party, Sanjay Chauhan of Janwadi Party (Socialist), Om Prakash Rajbhar of Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), among others also joined the opposition programme.

VARANASI, MAR 2 (PTI): Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary on Thursday claimed that the BJP-led Centre is trying to politicise the evacuation of Indians stranded in war-hit Ukraine in view of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls. Noting that the rescue mission of Indians from Kuwait three decades ago did not have any name, Chaudhary said here that the current operation in Ukraine has been named ‘Ganga’ by the government with “an eye on Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh polls”. Speaking at a joint rally of SP alliance parties in Varanasi, the RLD president said the world is facing a troubled time at the moment and hoped global leaders understand the damage being caused to humanity due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict and work towards ending it soon. “I pray Indians stranded in Ukraine return to their homes safe. Losing primacy

imapur is not only the commercial capital of Nagaland but also the gateway that is accessible from other parts of India by road, rail and air. Therefore, it is important that Dimapur grows economically as its population continues to grow. Since the mid-80s Dimapur City experienced a boom which catapulted it to the position as among the fastest growing cities after Guwahati City. Unfortunately, the negatives have outweighed the positives. The boom was two ways- economic and criminal. It may be noted that this is not an exclusive phenomenon restricted to Dimapur; it exists in many other cities. Prices of every commodity has been on steady rise as a consequence and this is bad for business, economy and the people. Reams have been written about Dimapur’s infamous taxation cottage industry which have become deep rooted especially in the face of ever weakening of political will. As commented earlier, the overbearing manner in which multiple taxations are imposed, have also led to flight of business from Dimapur and which is gradually reducing the city into a sub-outlet of nearby towns of Assam. The other is heavy influx of migrants from within and outside, which has made Dimapur city to become densely populated with over two lakh inhabitants in the urban area alone and pushing basic civic amenities to the stretching point. The idea of extending development of the urban city by shifting of the office of the DC Dimapur to Chümoukedima months ago, has been permanently shelved due to protests. This also exemplifies the manifestations of unwillingness in sticking to decisions taken. It may seem like an appeasement policy but in reality, it could be a lack of clarity in decision making. The over inclination on holding consultations on crucial issues may sound impressive as they are billed as ‘wide consultations’ but it is debatable if most have achieved the goal. To be helpful towards achieving the desired goal, those involved are expected to be have in depth knowledge of specific subjects so as to have a meaningful discussion. The result of such consultations is to arrive at decisions but in reality, they fail as consensus are elusive and understandably so. There is need to change the environment with a long term objective. For progress, crime prevention should be at the top of the agenda, which criminologists consider in two senses. The first involves the ability of criminal law enforcement to make citizens law-abiding by deterring potential offenders and preventing further lawbreaking by apprehending criminals. The second refers to the efforts to correct fundamental social conditions and personal maladjustments which are assumed to be the “seed bed” of crime. Looking at the problem from a wider perspective, criminalisation of society has unfortunately destroyed peace and progress. The fight against growing crime is unending and it requires not only the police but also the judiciary, administration, media and various CSOs to attempt a joint effort to reverse the ugly trend. To fight crimes, like fighting a war, means that the frontline soldiers are given the best in terms of men and materials – to improve their ability, facility and mobility.

DailyDevotion His Commission to Us Feed My sheep. —John 21:17

This is love in the making. The love of God is not created— it is His nature. When we receive the life of Christ through the Holy Spirit, He unites us with God so that His love is demonstrated in us. The goal of the indwelling Holy Spirit is not just to unite us with God, but to do it in such a way that we will be one with the Father in exactly the same way Jesus was. And what kind of oneness did Jesus Christ have with the Father? He had such a oneness with the Father that He was obedient when His Father sent Him down here to be poured out for us. And He says to us, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). Peter now realizes that he does love Him, due to the revelation that came with the Lord’s piercing question. The Lord’s next point is— “Pour yourself out. Don’t testify about how much you love Me and don’t talk about the wonderful revelation you have had, just ‘Feed My sheep.’ ” Jesus has some extraordinarily peculiar sheep: some that are unkempt and dirty, some that are awkward or pushy, and some that have gone astray! But it is impossible to exhaust God’s love, and it is impossible to exhaust my love if it flows from the Spirit of God within me. The love of God pays no attention to my prejudices caused by my natural individuality. If I love my Lord, I have no business being guided by natural emotions— I have to feed His sheep. We will not be delivered or released from His commission to us. Beware of counterfeiting the love of God by following your own natural human emotions, sympathies, or understandings. That will only serve to revile and abuse the true love of God.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2022

R

A retired Russian general’s criticism may signal a larger problem for Putin

etired Russian Colonel-General Leonid Ivashov, the head of the All-Russian Officers Assembly, has gone public with a statement that calls for Russian President Vladimir Putin to resign over the confrontation involving Ukraine. To remove any doubt as to his message, Ivashov, 78, followed the public statement with an interview on a liberal Russian media outlet, Echo Moskvy, insisting that he was speaking in the name of the assembly of retired and reservist Russian officers which he heads. The collective statement was ironed out in internal discussions, Ivashov said, with some of the retired military men arguing for a softer line on Putin but others demanding even tougher words. Ivashov, speaking in measured language, explained that active officers understandably are not free to speak their minds, and he made note of the fact that he was speaking to the small audience of EchoMoskvy.

“T

Ivashov is not some Putin critic or Russian dissident in the mold of a Boris Nemtsov or an Alexei Navalny. In the absence of an active marshal of the army — such as Marshal Georgy Zhukov, the celebrated Red Army general of World War II — a colonel-general would be the second-highest rank in the Russian army. Ivashov served as a senior aide to the country’s defense minister and as the ministry’s chief of general affairs before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991; he subsequently held other high-ranking military posts and commands before retiring — or, some say, being sacked by Putin — in 2001. Those roles included numerous negotiations with NATO and the U.S. military. Since then, he has written extensively on Russian military matters and geopolitics, from the perspective of a pro-Soviet, hardline nationalist. He even tried unsuccessfully to file as a presidential candidate in 2011. He has

Gen Leonid Ivashov criticized Putin frequently and has called repeatedly over the years for Putin to resign. His may be the lone military voice speaking out publicly against Putin’s actions regarding Ukraine, but it is a significant voice, nonetheless. As Michael McFaul, a former U.S. ambassador to Russia, tweeted: “This is a big deal. At one time, General Ivashov was one of the most respected (and hawkish) leaders in the Russian [ministry of defense]. Russian generals don’t usually get involved in public policy

debates, especially ones like Ivashov.” To be clear, Ivashov believes that NATO is a hostile power, but his experience has taught him that the NATO/U.S. threat is under control and no external threat is imminent from the Western powers. The massive buildup of Russian troops on the Ukraine and Belarus borders, therefore, is not to deal with a threat from the West. Rather, it is to divert attention from the internal health, demographic challenges, living-standards collapse and pervasive corruption that the Russian citizenry is suffering under the mismanagement of an incompetent Putin regime. Ivashov points out that the Putin model has in no way demonstrated its superiority to Ukraine, to Crimea, to the two “separatist” Ukrainian republics or to anyone else. Under Putin, Russia has become an international “pariah,” he says. Its annexation of Crimea is not recognized by credible nations, and Russia is

Kukis are also stakeholders

he State of Nagaland was created on 1st December 1963 under the 16th Point Agreement as the 16th State of the Indian Union for the 16th Tribes of Nagaland ”. The recent statements, analogy and assumptions that the state of Nagaland has only certain number of recognized Tribes and Stakeholders has come at the cost of hurting the sentiment and distorting of our rich historical background and of the existence of various tribes recognized by the Government of India as per the Constitution of India. The existence of such Tribe Indigeniuous to its Land and history and as old as the existence of the very concept of our Naga Nations and its movements is the “ KUKI ” Tribe of Nagaland. Kuki’s are also a Stakeholder within our state of Nagaland irrespective of how minor or lesser populations we may be, as a Stakeholder history has shown in our struggle for self-determination along with the rest of our other Naga brothers. The Kuki’s of Nagaland has settled and living within the Naga Hills before and even after its attainment of its Nagaland statehood. The existence of Kuki are documented and historically noted even during the time of John Butler, who took a census of the Kuki’s of Naga Hills in 1872 and also drew a map, where there were 25 Kuki villages, with a population of 2599 people in 21 villages (4 villages not accounted for). The Census of India 1901, also shows that there were about 26 Kuki villages with 128 persons per village approximately which brings the Kuki population in the Naga Hills to 3328. The beginning of the 20th century saw the emergence of Naga Nationalism which led to the formation of Naga Club in 1918. The real birth of the Naga ‘Nation’ was ushered by the formation of the Naga Club where we the Kuki were part of it. On 10th January, 1929, the Naga Club submitted a memorandum-SIMON COMMISSION- which sought that the Naga Hills be left out within the reformed scheme of India but be directly under the British government, Naga Hills district was declared as ‘Excluded Area’ in the Government of India Act.1935. Among the signatories from the six tribes, Lengjang Kuki (Head Dobashi) was one. It was not by accident that Lengjang Kuki signed for a Naga political document. He was citizen of Naga Hills, a Naga in the generic sense, a name which loosely connected the diverse Naga tribes. The Simon Commission which is the ‘Bed Rock’ on which Naga politics stands and has been our magna carta in formation of our struggle for identity, sovergnity and foundation for all other negotiations in the days to come of our Unique history and kindling our self determination to be a free Nation. Kuki’s during the NNC Era :-

Lengjang’s contribution to the Naga Club and his legacy was continued by the Kuki’s of Naga Hills with the feelings of being a Naga Politically sharing the dreams and aspiration like their other Naga bothers of different Tribes. Paochung Kuki, Dr. Lenjalal Kuki, Onpao Kuki, Jangkhusei Kuki, Subedar Khupjalet Kuki etc continued where Lengjang left. Two leading Kuki social and intellectual stalwarts of the time- Seikhohen Kuki and Jangkhosei Kuki- were elected as members of the Kuki Tribal Council under NNC. Sir Akbar Hydari, the then Governor of Assam visited Kohima in 1947. He had long discussions with the NNC and the following tribes were present: Western Angami, Eastern Angami, Kuki, Kacha Nagas, Rengmas, Semas, Lothas, Aos, Sangtams and Changs. The result was the ‘Nine Point Agreement’ between the governor and the NNC. Seikhohen Kuki was a member of the first Naga delegation to meet Jawaharlal Nehru for Naga independence and was one of the founding members of NNC. When NNC was first formed, every Naga citizen was supposed to directly contribute towards it but only seven tribes namely Ao, Sema, Eastern Angami (Chakhesang), Angamis, Lotha, Rengma and Zeliang-Kuki contributed to it. During the Naga Plebiscite on 16 May 1951, the Kuki leaders of the time like Onpao Kuki (President, Kuki Union), Paochung Kuki (Chief of Khaibung), Dr Lenzalal Kuki (Chief of Bungsang, father of late Seikhohen Kuki) and Subedar Khupjalet Kuki pressed their finger and took the lead amongst the Kuki people and mobilized its people within Nagaland in favor of Naga independence. The Kuki’s were part of the Federal Army in the NNC initiated by stalwarts like Vomkhothang, president of KUC and Hemjangul, secretary of KUC, and Simson Haolai. The initial Kuki leaders in Naga Federal Army were Kailet Singson, Henkho Haolai, Paokhoseh Chongloi, Tonglen Singson, Haokhoseh Kholhou, Haokholet Kholhou, Padal Kuki, Jacob Doungel etc. Under the Federal Government, Semas, Kukis and Rengmas were under one district under the Patkai state of ‘Nagaland’ and called it SE-KURENG taking the first syllable of the name of each tribe. When the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) was convened and started having parleys with the Government of India for settlement, Jangkhusei Kuki became a member of the Drafting member to prepare a draft for the Naga Political Settlement. The NPC had asked the Zeliangs and Kukis to be represented as Zeliang-Kuki Tribal Council in the NPC. Finally, when the 16 Point Agreement was signed between NPC and Government of India, Thinuowholie Leigiese signed as a representative of ZeliangKuki. Lutjakai Kuki went on to become the Kuki member in

the Interim Body. Kuki’s after Nagaland Statehood:The declaration of full statehood for Nagaland on 1st December, 1963 led to the dissolution of the Interim Body and fresh elections were held for the 45 member State Legislative Assembly. The Nagaland State Legislative Assembly of 1964 included two Kuki Member -Langkam Kuki representing Ghaspani and Lalkholam Kuki representing Tenning. In the 1982 Assembly election, Henlun Singson won from Tening Constituency and was the sitting MLA/Minister till 1989. Henlun Singson was also inducted into the Council of Ministers with the status of Minister of State (Independent Charge-Forest Department) but ever since then after the pogrom and mass killing and uprooting of the Kuki’s from their Villages and land we could not marshal our tribe into organized entity from the 1990’s. Kuki’s during the NSCN Era:In the early 1990s, a POGROM was launched against the Indigeniuous Kuki’s of Nagaland where hundreds of innocent Children’s, women and people were massacred all over Nagaland along with burning and uprooting of several villages and its people. Altogether 15 Kuki villages were either fully burned or temporarily Vacated, Worse than that was the large scale migration of Kukis from Nagaland to neighboring states, scampering for survival since NO ONE or TRIBE(s) came to our rescue in time of our dire needs, we were left totally isolated and abandon by our fellow tribesmen from Nagaland due to fear of death and destructions that has fallen upon us. Till the early 1990’s, a considerable number of Kuki’s were still there in the Federal Army/NNC. On 12th August 1992- 12 NNC cadres were killed in Chalkot Village. Kuki’s were still supporters of NNC then but this incident shook their beliefs and security when the NNC could not protect themselves and the people who supported the organization, the Kuki’s of Nagaland decided to join the NSCN-K lead by stalwart like the present Advisor to Collective Leadership-GPRN/ NSCN-Chungkhojang Singson (C.Singson), Luna ChongloiKilonser-GPRN/NSCN, Col. Lenglam etc, In the NSCN(IM) it is lead by Paohao Kuki-Member Steering Committee, Haolim Kuki-Executive Steering Member etc and many cadres from all over Nagaland, wearing the insignia of Naga Army proudly in their Uniforms and swearing by the principle of Naga Nation as we proudly did way back from the day of Simon Commission to the era of NNC. Till date there are more than hundreds of Cadres both in the Civil and Army set up in various factions of our Naga Political Group walking shoulder to shoulder with our other Naga brethrens in our quest for a

widely viewed as a rogue state because of Putin’s “criminal policy of provoking war.” Ivashov distinguishes between Russia’s highly trained professional officers’ ranks and the Kremlin’s military “elite,” headed by what he considers to be non-entities. If Putin’s policies —designed only to solidify his internal power — indeed push Russia into a “catastrophic war,” he adds, it won’t be Putin’s Kremlin soldiers who pay the price; rather, it will be the professional officers and the tens of thousands of young Russian conscripts who will be killed or crippled in the fighting. Adding to Ivashov’s concerns is his fear that Turkey could join with Ukraine in a military alliance if war does break out. That, of course, would be an entirely different ball game for the Russians to confront. Ivashov’s solution: Fire Putin if he can’t be forced to resign and, if necessary, put him in prison for his “criminal policy of provoking war.” Of course, all of that is

final honorable and respectable solution. Conclusions: The Kuki’s of Nagaland from the time of Naga Hill, formation of Naga Club, submission of Memorandum to Simon Commission, being part of the NNC, part of the Historical Plebiscite, the Naga People Convention, Interim Government and became members of the first State Legislative Assembly with 2 MLAs and till date we the Kuki’s of Nagaland continued to be part of our Naga movement in various capacities whether it might be in Civil or in the Army. The Kuki’s of Nagaland has always considered ourselves as Politically Naga’s from the day of the formation of Naga Club and has Stood with our brothers and sisters through the Historical evolutions of our time in determination to achieve our freedom and sovereignty in whichever forms we –Naga’s-believed. The recent development of alienations and sidelining of the Kuki’s in various platforms of discussions and consultations within the state of Nagaland by our brothers -read Tribes and not considering us-Kuki’s-as NonStakeholders, in the threshold of another historical landmark has found ourselves abandon and alienated in our own Land in Nagaland. The Kuki’s of Nagaland has been part of our Naga Movement right from the start GO whether it may be in the erstwhile NNC era or in the era of the NSCN lead movement. Kuki’s had always considered ourselves Physically, mentally and by deeds as Politically Naga’s, to undermine the contributions and participations of the Kuki’s of Nagaland is as good as undermining our Naga National movement itself-we were neither Johnny come lately or hunger for power and positions, we contributed as per our beliefs and convictions for an honorable and self-determined rules for our Naga people from the time of the formation of Naga Club till date. Last but not the least I would appeal to the present Government of Nagaland not to Discriminate, alienate and treat US like a second class citizen and consider us as Nonexistence within our own state, I also appeal to my Kuki people to Forgive the government and its Leaders/Parties who has plotted to discriminate us “for they do not know their own state history and vows taken under the Constitution”, I also pray that the Tears, Bloods, discriminations and disappointment of the downtrodden tribe like the Kuki do not fall on this Leaders or their families. I humbly pray that the Government of Nagaland take a corrective measures and start treating us like a fellow Christian human beings and acknowledge our undeniable presence and consult us too along with other stakeholders in matter relating to the state of Nagaland. Lun Tungnung, Social Activist, Dimapur, Nagaland.

highly unlikely to occur. And yet, according to Ivashov’s account, he is speaking for a significant portion of Russia’s professional military, the one institution most trusted by the Russian people. If his claim is true, then those military men, retired or still in uniform, must feel very strongly or else they would have remained comfortably quiet, enjoying their pensions and privileges, rather than incurring the wrath and inevitable punishment of Putin. Putin undoubtedly will find a way to punish Ivashov for his outspoken criticism, and perhaps other members of the All-Russian Officers Assembly as well. But he cannot wipe out all those who believe what Ivashov has said. Nor can he afford to alienate his professional military. It just may be that with all his saber-rattling and gamesmanship over Ukraine, Putin may have created an opposition that he cannot silence so easily. Paul Roderick Gregory (As published in The Hill)

Merit aspect of NLTP

D

iscussion on Merit and Demerit of liquor prohibition will be endless. But a verdict can be drawn out when the father and mother in a family can give their observation, a medical doctor in a hospital gives his or her opinion, school teachers give their views, leaders of principle give their wisdom, and department secretaries and directors give their wish as they want disciplined people and attendants of loyalty. It is easy to advice our children saying, “Do not drink”. But the best policy is to keep the killer away. Disadvantage of Prohibition includes loss of revenue, porous of illegal trades, and mechanism failure of implementation. Saving young brain, vitality and prospect of youth is incomparably more important than revenue at the expense of human value. At this point, Church and civil societies are armless moral and social wings in process of implementation while the government can functionally create armed-mechanism including imposition of heavy fine, rigorous imprisonment, and punitive measures under a slogan of ‘Safe Generation’. Sacrifice of Church Leaders In process of intensive dry fasting and prayer, several church leaders were hospitalized during the full three day Sit-in in Kohima, 1989. When our spiritual leaders advocated and demanded for total liquor prohibition, it was a vision given by God to save and protect the generation from destruction by liquor. The move and demand for prohibition was based on analysis of factors such as better spiritual health, mental and psychological liberation, better economic condition, welfare of youth education, family stability, and social forwardness and peace. The NLTP is historically a prophetic voice with solidarity of both the Church and the state without disputed opinions. Prohibition is beautiful and has brought many blessings to the people. Therefore, we must rethink before jumping over to revocation of NLTP as it is a divine conviction. Rather, we must thank God for such historic sagacity as clean foundation of Nagaland. Merit of Prohibition since the Act The NLTP brought immense advantage and blessing to the society since its enactment. To the glory of God, the scenario of prohibition reflected the image of Nagaland as a land of Christians who believe what the Bible tells us including sanctity of human bodies, solemnity of family and decency of society. The merit of prohibition has been obvious, including *Serenity of schools and educational centers with peaceful and conducive atmosphere and environment. *Hospitals have far less rate of casualties from drinking related cases. *Police stations have less liquor related discipline problems. *Our streets on Christmas and New Days are decent and not messy. *Parent-children and family relationship stand normal. *Progress in education, economy and spiritual shalom grew fast. *Civil societies and NGOs rendered service to check liquor out. *Prohibition, as a legal act, creates a general and psychological awareness. The scenario of the above beauty will reverse once the prohibition is reverted. Civil society and the Church should not be a part in lifting the promulgated prohibition under any circumstance, if it is to be lifted against the will of the society and the spiritual body of the land. It will be a self-defeat and eating one’s own vomit since the Act of NLTP was passed in the name of God by the Church and Christians in leadership. The Bible warns us when it says, “Gaining the whole world gains nothing when life is lost” (Luke 9:25). Instead lifting or relaxing the prohibition, the Act of NLTP should be fully implemented with stringent measure. Grass-Root Education The need is laying grass-root foundation to develop far-reaching vision towards healthy generation now and even souls yet to be born. Young generation must cultivate a conscience of ‘good and evil of liquor effect’ in their education system. Beyond many good literatures, the Bible teaches us about morality, sanctity, purity, honesty, modesty, peace and tranquility. It is high time, if not getting late, for Nagaland to legislate the use of Bible or Bible literatures in schools for Christian boys and girls as they have every right to know and uphold the foundation of their faith. Besides science, social science and other studies, building spiritual foundation in the lives of our children is fundamental as the Bible tells us to lead our children in the right way (Proverbs 22:6; Matthew 6:33). In the long-run, the subject of NLTP will become an irrelevant subject when our youth come to a full understating of side effect of liquor that destroys human vitality. God bless Nagaland! Rev. Dr. Phuveyi Dozo.

Jaishankar briefs consultative panel on Ukraine New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI): The opposition stands united with the government, opposition leaders said on Thursday after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed the consultative committee of his ministry on Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the evacuation of Indians from the war-hit nation. During the meeting, which was attended by nine MPs from six parties, including Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi, the opposition members broadly supported the government’s stand of abstaining from voting in the UNSC on a resolution deploring Russia, sources said. “Just completed a MEA consultative committee meeting on developments in Ukraine. A good discussion on the strategic and humanitarian aspects of the issue. Strong and unanimous message of support for efforts to bring back all Indians from Ukraine,” Jaishankar tweeted. Thanking leaders for their participation, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said,”a national consensus on the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.” Talking to reporters after the meeting, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said,”we all are united.” Later tweeting about t h e m e e t i n g, T h a r o o r

Describing the meeting as “excellent”, Tharoor thanked Jaishankar and his colleagues for a comprehensive briefing and candid responses to the questions and concerns of members. This is the spirit in which foreign policy should be run, he tweeted. The meeting of the 21-member committee lasted for more than two hours and came amid opposition criticism of the government’s handling of the Ukraine crisis– evacuation of Indians and the UN vote. Apart from being critical of the government’s

evacuation efforts, Tharoor had also raised questions over India’s abstention in voting against Russia at the

Scindia says IAF, Indian carriers to bring back 3,726 people in 19 flights Thursday

The IAF and Indian carriers will operate 19 flights to bring back 3,726 Indians from Ukraine’s neighbouring countries to India on Thursday, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said. Under Operation Ganga, eight flights of the IAF, Air India and IndiGo will operate from the Romanian capital Bucharest to India on Thursday, he said on Twitter. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is using its C-17 military transport aircraft for this evacuation operation. India has been evacuating its citizens through special flights from Ukraine’s western neighbours such as Romania, Hungary and Poland as the Ukrainian airspace has been shut since February 24 due to the Russian military offensive. The minister said two flights of IndiGo will depart from Romanian city Suceava and one flight of SpiceJet will leave from Slovakian city Kosice on Thursday. The IAF, Go First and Air India will operate five flights from Hungarian capital Budapest to India on Thursday, he said, adding IndiGo will operate two flights from Polish city Rzeszow to India the same day.

Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi receives Indian nationals, who have been safely evacuated from Ukraine. (PTI) MUMBAI, MAR 3 (PTI): After spending nearly a week in transit while trying to move out of Vinnytsia in war-hit Ukraine and a snow storm on the Romanian border, medical student Shoaib Salim Attar is finally relieved to be back home. But, he is still worried about scores of other students waiting to return to India from Ukraine. “It’s God’s grace that I could make it,” Attar (21), who left Vinnytsia on the night of February 24, after Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine, told PTI. He landed in Mumbai on Thursday in a special flight from Bucharest. A third-year student of the Vinnytsia National Medical University, Attar had on February 22 booked a ticket for February 27 to fly back home to India.

On February 22, Russia had announced the recognition of Luhansk and Donestk as independent states, the rebel held territories of Ukraine As per Attar, who hails from Bengaluru in neighbouring Karnataka, the university’s dean then asked the students not to leave, saying “look, there is peace outside”. “Although the Indian embassy in Ukraine issued advisories, they were of little help,” the student said. The Indian Embassy asked the Indians to leave only if it was absolutely necessary, he said. “In Ukraine, the universities require 100 per cent attendance. The university also did not allow us to leave. When we expressed our apprehensions that there may be an attack

on Ukraine, the university administration thought we wanted virtual classes,” he claimed. By then, Attar had decided to leave the country. “We took special care to book a ticket from Laviv, a city near the Poland border, so that even if a Russian attack takes place, we would be safe. But, then we got the message from the airlines that the flight has been cancelled,” he said. Later, the Ukranian government shut down its air space, crashing hopes of taking a flight from the country. That’s when the battle started for Attar and many like him. After the attack on Ukraine began on February 24, Russian aircraft started hovering the skies around Vinnytsia. “There would be sirens

Pastor thrashed, forced to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ pastor alleged that on February 25, a group of men harassed him and forced him to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ when he was on his way to work after meeting one of his friends. Tet alleged in his complaint that the men snatched his Bible and tried to tear it, the police said, adding that the pastor was also allegedly punched and kicked. “They snatched my bag which had valuables and the Bible. They tried to tear it but could not. They accused me of conducting religious conversions forcefully. They punched me, kicked me and forcefully took me in their car, saying they were taking me to Maidan Garhi police station. They also threatened to break my arms and legs,” he alleged. The pastor was allegedly taken to Fatehpur chowk where the men tied his hands with ropes and started punching and kicking him again on the roadside, the police said. “Around 100 people were standing there as mute spectators. No one came to rescue me. They made videos and watched me being thrashed and assaulted. But no one came to help. They also tried to instigate the students who were returning from school to chant “Jai Shree Ram” and beat me up. This went on for around 45 minutes,” he alleged. NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): The Delhi Police registered an FIR on Thursday days after a pastor alleged that he was thrashed, humiliated and forced to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ by a group of unknown persons, who accused him of carrying out religious conversions “forcibly”, officials said. The incident took place on February 25 at South Delhi’s Fatehpuri Berri area but the pastor, Kelom Tet, filed the complaint two days later at the Maidan Garhi police station, they said. In the videos of the purported incident, a group of men can be seen surrounding the pastor and heckling him. Tet, who has been residing in south Delhi’s Asola for the last 18 years, recalled that he was targeted by another unknown group 15 years ago at Sanjay Colony here. “Based on the complaint, we have lodged an FIR against unknown persons under sections 365 (Kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and an investigation is underway,” said Harsha Vardhan, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South). Referring to his call for ‘zero defect-zero effect’ manufacturing, Modi said Indian products should not have any defect at all and in this competitive world, quality is the key. “Aatmanirbharta is all the more important if we see

The Prime Minister also cited the examples of new demands and opportunities in sectors like semiconductors and electric vehicles where manufacturers should move with a sense of removing dependencies on foreign sources. Similarly, areas like steel and medical equipment need to be focussed for indigenous manufacturing, he added. He also pointed out the difference between the availability of a product and the availability of madein-India products in the market. Ukraine refugee count tops 1 million

KYIV, MAR 3 (AP): More than 1 million people have fled Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, in the swiftest refugee exodus this century, the United Nations said Thursday, as Russian forces pressed their assaults on the country’s second-largest city and two strategic seaports. The tally the U.N. refugee agency released to The Associated Press was reached Wednesday and amounts to more than 2% of Ukraine’s population being forced out of the country in seven days. The mass evacuation could be seen in Kharkiv, a city of about 1.5 million people where residents desperate to escape falling shells and bombs crowded the city’s train station and pressed onto trains, not always knowing where they were headed. With a column of tanks and other vehicles apparently stalled for days outside the capital of Kyiv, fighting continued on multiple fronts across Ukraine. A second round of talks aimed at ending the fighting was expected later

tial buildings. A statement from the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces didn’t address the strikes, saying only that Russian forces were “regrouping” and “trying to reach the northern outskirts” of the city. “The advance on Kyiv has been rather not very organized and now they’re more or less stuck,” military analyst Pavel Felgenhauer told the AP in Moscow. Thursday in neighbouring Belarus — though the two sides appeared to have little common ground. Britain’s Defense Ministry said Mariupol, a large city on the Azov Sea, was encircled by Russian forces. The status of another vital port, Kherson, a Black Sea shipbuilding city of 280,000, remained unclear. Russia’s forces claimed to have taken complete control of Kherson, which would be the biggest city to fall in the invasion thus far. Britain’s Defense Ministry said that was possible, though not yet verified. The mayor said there

were no Ukrainian forces in the city — but he said the Ukrainian flag was still flying over it. Overnight, Associated Press reporters in Kyiv heard at least one explosion before videos started circulating of apparent strikes on the capital. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had knocked out a reserve broadcasting center in the Lysa Hora district, about 7 kilometers (4 miles) south of the government headquarters. It said unspecified precision weapons were used, and that there were no casualties or damage to residen-

have been killed and another 525 wounded since the invasion began, according to the latest figures from the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights. Earlier, Ukraine said more than 2,000 civilians have died, a figure that could not be independently verified. The U.N. office uses strict methodology and counts only confirmed casualties, and admits its figures are a vast undercount.

UN says at least 227 civilians dead in Ukraine GENEVA, MAR 3 (AP): The UN human rights office says 227 civilians have been killed and another 525 injured in its latest count of the toll in Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s military invasion that began a week ago. The office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights says the tally eclipses the entire civilian casualty count from the war in eastern Ukraine between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces in 2014 — which left 136 dead and 577 injured. The rights office admits that the figures so far are a vast undercount. It uses a strict methodology and counts only confirmed casualties. Ukrainian officials have presented far higher numbers. The rights office said in a statement late Wednesday that “real figures are considerably higher, especially in government-controlled territory and especially in recent days, as the receipt of information from some locations where intensive hostilities have been going on was delayed and many reports were still pending corroboration.”

Alexey Venediktov, the radio station’s Editor-in-Chief and one of Russia’s most prominent journalists, wrote on Telegram that “higher-ranking people” earlier had hinted to him that such a decision was under consideration. “The Ekho Moskvy board of directors has decided by a majority to close down the Ekho Moskvy radio channel and the website,” he said. The press ser vice of the Gazprom Media holding has confirmed the information to Russia’s state-run news agency TASS. Ukraine urges citizens to use guerilla tactics

LVIV, MAR 3 (AP): As Russian forces advance on strategic points in southern Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities on Thursday called on compatriots to launch a guerrilla war against Russian forces. In a video message posted online, Ukrainian presidential aide Oleksiy Arestovich urged men to cut down trees and destroy rear columns of Russian troops. “We urge people to begin providing total popular resistance to the enemy in the occupied territories,” Arestovich said. “The weak side of the Russian army is the rear - if we burn them now and block the rear, the

war will stop in a matter of days,” he said. Arestovich said that such tactics are already being used in Konotop in northeast Ukraine and Melitopol near the Azov Sea, which were captured by Russian troops. He called on the civilian population to build barricades in cities, hold rallies with Ukrainian flags, and create online networking groups. “Total resistance ... this is our Ukrainian trump card and this is what we can do best in the world,” Arestovich said, recalling guerrilla actions in Nazioccupied Ukraine during World War II.

Ukraine demands CF, safe evacuation of citizens China denies asking Russia not to attack it. What do you want from us? Leave our land,” he said, addressing Putin. Despite an initial battle plan that Western countries said was aimed at swiftly toppling the Kyiv government, Russia has captured only one Ukrainian city so far — the southern Dnipro River port of Kherson, which its tanks entered on Wednesday. With its main assault force halted for days on a highway north of Kyiv, Russia has shifted tactics, escalating its bombardment of major cities. Swathes of central Kharkiv, a city of 1.5 million people, have been blasted into rubble.

Following that, the sides issued a joint statement in which they declared “friendship between the two states has no limits, there are no forbidden’ areas of cooperation.” In that statement, China also endorsed Russia’s opposition to further NATO expansion and demand that it “respect the sovereignty, security and interests of other countries.” Russia, for its part, reaffirmed its support for China’s claim over Taiwan, the self-governing island Beijing threatens to annex by force if necessary. Russia had launched an attack on Georgia during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, angering some in the Chinese leadership and among the public.

injection could help save babies Raw veggies beat cooked for heart health New from respiratory syncytial virus

I

f you’re trying to eat more vegetables to improve your heart health, you may want to stick with raw produce instead of making lots of vegetarian casseroles and stir-fried dishes. That’s because a new study suggests that cooked veggies may not reduce your risk of developing or dying of heart disease. The study, published February 21 in Frontiers in Nutrition, examined data on vegetable consumption among 399,586 adults in the United Kingdom who were 56 years old on average and had never been diagnosed with heart disease. After 12 years of follow-up, participants experienced a total of 18,052 major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, and a total of 4,406 people died of cardiovascular disease. Overall, participants consumed an average of 2.3 tablespoons (tbsp) a day of raw vegetables and 2.8 daily tbsp of cooked vegetables. When researchers compared people with the highest vegetable intake to those with the lowest

consumption, raw veggies were associated with an 11 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 15 percent lower risk of death by events like heart attacks and strokes. There didn’t appear to be any heart benefit associated with cooked vegetables. And the study also found that most of the protective effect of raw veggies might be explained by differences in participants’ overall health, lifestyle habits, and socioeconomic status. This doesn’t mean cooked vegetables are bad for us, or that they can’t be part of a heart-healthy diet, says Alice Lichten-

stein, DSc, a professor of nutrition science and policy and the director of the cardiovascular nutrition laboratory at Tufts University in Boston. “Assessing the effect of an individual food, rather than an entire dietary pattern, does not provide the whole picture and may be misleading,” says Dr. Lichtenstein, who wasn’t involved in the study. The people who ate the most raw vegetables in the study did a lot of other things that are associated with better cardiovascular health outcomes and that may have made the impact of veggies on their own seem much smaller. 0 Cent is threatening to take the “Power” universe off Starz because his latest offering, “Power Book IV: Force,” has not yet been renewed. The series debuted on Feb. 6 to record ratings for the cabler, but the hip-hop mogul says the show is sitting “in limbo.” The “Power” executive producer shared his dismay in a string of Instagram posts Tuesday. He began with a video of a man shoving items into a suitcase and included the caption: “This is me packing my stuff, STARZ sucks, my deal is up over here I’m out. They renewed ‘Hightown’ and ‘Force’ is the highest rated show [but] they have it sitting in limbo. If I told you how much dumb s— I deal with over here.” While the hip-hop mogul’s

contract with Starz is ending soon, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap it’s not officially up until the fall. 50 Cent shared more photos of suitcases and in a second post wrote: “Hold my calls I’m traveling, getting the fvck away from STARZ.” “Force” star Joseph Sikora, who plays fan favorite Tommy Egan, replied to one of the posts with “Oh boy!” As 50 Cent mentioned, “Hightown” was renewed on Tuesday for a third season. The crime series stars Monica Raymund as a National Marine Fisheries Service agent trying to get sober.

pants with the highest raw vegetable consumption, for example, were more likely to attend college, avoid smoking, get more exercise, get treatment if they had high cholesterol or high blood pressure, consume lots of fish and fruit, and minimize their consumption of red and processed meat. It’s also possible that the cooking methods people used made raw veggies appear much healthier by comparison, says Nour Makarem, PhD, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York City. “Cooked vegetables are often consumed with seasoning and oils, thereby increasing sodium intake and making them more energy dense, which could increase the risk of heart disease,” says Dr. Makarem, who wasn’t involved in the study. “Cooking can also alter digestibility and bioavailability of nutrients.” One limitation of the study is that researchers lacked data on the specific

types of vegetables people ate, how foods were prepared, what proportion of participants’ diets came from veggies, or how many total calories people consumed. In fact, the total vegetable intake people reported in the study was a fraction of what’s recommended by U.S. dietary guidelines: 2 to 3 cups daily for women and 3 to 4 cups daily for men. That’s a minimum of 32 tbsp for women and 48 tbsp for men; the average daily intake in the study was just 5 tbsp. The study participants are in good company, however. Only 1 in 10 adults get the minimum recommended daily amount of vegetables, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “The take-home is that we all need to eat more vegetables, whether they are raw, cooked, steamed, sautéed, pureed, or roasted,” says Samantha Heller, RD, a senior clinical nutritionist at New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City, who wasn’t involved in the study.

A

new drug could help protect healthy babies from a common respiratory virus that can make them sick, according to the doctors and scientists studying the drug. A late-stage trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine Thursday found nirsevimab, an antibody injection, cut the number of babies requiring medical attention for a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection by about 75%. RSV is the leading cause of bronchiolitis, an inflammation of the small airways, and pneumonia in babies under the age of one in the US, according to the CDC. In most cases, RSV

causes mild, cold-like symptoms lasting up to two weeks but one to two of every 100 children younger than six months require hospital treatment, the CDC said. At present, there’s only one drug available — pavivizumab — that might prevent RSV. However, it’s reserved for babies at highest risk from the virus, such as those born prematurely or with underlying lung or heart conditions. Pavivizumab’s protection lasts one month, which means infants need five injections throughout the season when RSV is most prevalent, which is during fall, winter and spring in most of the US. The latest

trial’s results, pending regulatory approval, suggest that nirsevimab might be used to protect healthy, term babies from RSV as a one-off shot for a season, the study authors said. The scientists found RSV-associated infection requiring medical attention occurred in 1.2% of 994 infants that got nirsevimab, compared with 5% of 496 babies that got a dummy drug. This corresponds to an efficacy of 74.5%, the study authors said. There were no serious adverse events related to the drug, they said. Dr. William Muller, study author and an associate professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine said of the findings: “These exciting data show that nirsevimab has the potential to offer RSV protection for all infants, which would be a paradigm shift in the approach to this disease.” Muller told Chicago news outlet WGN9, that RSV can be a “big problem” for “little babies, particularly under age 1”. Stonehenge may have been an ancient solar calendar, a new study discovers

S

tonehenge may have served as a calendar to keep track of the yearly movements of the sun, suggesting a prehistoric link to sun worship in the eastern Mediterranean, according to new research. A study published Tuesday in the journal Antiquity shows the largest stones at Stonehenge in southwest England may embody a solar calendar with 365¼ days each year — almost the same as the 365.2425 days used in modern solar calendars. While some sort of calendar function has long been suggested for Stonehenge, none of the theories adequately explained how it might have worked — and

the new research is only possible thanks to a better understanding of the ancient site, according to Timothy Darvill, a professor of archaeology at Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom and the author of the study. It seems Stonehenge was primarily aligned to the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere — Dec. 22, according to the modern calendar — when the sun rises and sets at its southernmost points, resulting in the longest night and the shortest day of the year. By aligning Stonehenge to the solstice and then using it to count the days in a year, the ancient monument could have accu-

rately reflected the annual solstices and seasons for hundreds of years, Darvill said. Stonehenge’s main circle now comprises 17

large stones known as sarsens — a word derived from the medieval English word “saracen,” which once referred to Arabs but came to mean anything pagan.

But empty sockets in the ground reveal it was built as a full circle of 30 sarsens; the others have been since hauled away, probably for other buildings or roads.

Kanye West and Pete Davidson

t seems that Kanye West still isn’t over his ex Kim Kardashian’s budding relationship with Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson. On Wednesday the 44-year-old rapper, who recently changed his legal name to Ye, shared the music video for “Eazy,” his new song with the Game, and it appears to feature an unsettling tableau with a clay figurine of Davidson. Clocking in at about four minutes, the video is filled with murky blackand-white imagery and animation. One sequence depicts a figure that resembles Ye putting a bag over the head of a figure that resembles Davidson, kidnapping him, and burying him up to his neck. Seeds are then planted and watered, and roses spring up around the Davidson lookalike’s head. Performance interludes also appear to portray Ye rapping while holding a severed head. Representatives for Davidson did not immediately respond to request for comment. Listeners have already noted that the “Eazy” lyrics include a dig at Davidson, K Y M C

with Ye referencing his 2002 car accident and rapping, “God saved me from the crash, just so I could beat Pete Davidson’s ass.” Ye also alludes to his and Kardashian’s divorce. “We havin’ the best divorce ever / If we go to court, we’ll go to court together,” he raps. Referring to Kourtney Kardashian, he adds, “Matter of fact, pick up your sis, we’ll go to Kourt’s together.” The “Eazy” video ends with a series of title cards that read: “Everyone lived happily every after / Except Skete you know who / JK he’s fine.” (“Skete” is a disparaging nickname Ye has recently taken to using to refer to Davidson.) Davidson has been dating Kardashian, Ye’s ex and the mother of their four children, since last fall, following her hosting an episode of SNL. Ye and Kardashian were married in 2014, and she filed for divorce in February 2021. Kardashian was declared legally single the same day the “Eazy” video was released, and officially dropped “West” from her name.

The visitors gained momentum and made it 2-0 just minutes later as Nkunku rounded goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler and tapped home into an empty net after benefit-

ting from Josko Gvardiol’s good build-up work. Leipzig dictated proceedings on the pitch and should have established a bigger advantage, but Zieler defused Gvardiol’s shot from close range at the half-hour mark, while Benjamin Henrichs hit the side netting just before half-time. After the restart, Leipzig retreated with its two-goal lead and handed

Leipzig eventually took over again as the match progressed and tripled the lead with 67 minutes gone when Konrad Laimer exchanged passes with Andre Silva before drilling the ball past Zieler from a tight angle. Hannover’s resistance was broken but Leipzig wasn’t done with the scoring and made it 4-0 six minutes later as Silva also got his name on the scoreboard, reports Xinhua. Elsewhere, Freiburg advanced into the next round after overpowering resilient Bochum 2-1 after an extra-time decider from Roland Sallai. Second division Hamburg rallied back from two goals down and edged Karlsruher SC 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regular time. The 24-year-old Verstappen was rewarded on Thursday for beating Lewis Hamilton to win his first world championship last year, with another five years added on the contract that ran through 2023. “Choosing to stay to the 2028 season was an easy decision,” the Dutchman said in a statement. “I love this team and last year was simply incredible. Our goal since we came together in 2016 was to win the championship and we have done that, so now it’s about keeping the number one on the car long-term.” Verstappen, who made his F1 debut at the age of 17, will open his title defense in Bahrain on March 20. “Our immediate focus is on retaining Max’s world championship title, but this deal also shows he is a part of the team’s longterm planning,” team principal Christian Horner said.

Davis Cup: India firm favourite against Denmark NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (PTI): A tailor-made low bounce and fast grass court arranged for the home advantage, the Indian Davis Cup team will start as firm favourite but Denmark is still expected to present a good fight in the Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie, starting here on Friday. India’s best player Yuki Bhambri is back in the squad and that changes the dynamics for the twoday rubber. India terribly felt his absence when he was out of action in the last four years due to his knee injury. India lost a few winnable ties but now with Yuki back in the mix, the team can bank on his immense talent and ability to pull off tight matches against a high-quality opponent. The 29-year-old will know exactly what he needs to do on the opening day since it will be Ramkumar Ramanathan who will open the tie for India with the first singles against Christian Sigsgaard, the world number 824. Ramkumar could not have asked for a better match since with his experience of playing on grass K Y M C

court and on the ATP tour, it should not be much of a problem to go past the Danish player. Yuki will play against 305th ranked Mikale Torpegaard, on whom much will depend how the tie goes. If Holger Rune (ranked 88) had not pulled out of the tie, it would have made it tougher for India.

Going by rankings, Indian team is strong but in Davis Cup the players usually manage to punch above their weight so it will come down to who plays better on the match day. As of now, the Indian team looks sharp and completely acclimatised to the grass court. The players will have a feel of the Cen-

tre Court for the first time on Friday and skipper Rohit Rajpal is expecting it to behave as per the requirement of the home side. “The idea is to keep it low and as fast as possible. We will consult grass court experts and local gardeners to know how much rolling is required. Hopefully it will play well,” Rajpal said.

Delhi’s poor outing in Ranji continue GUWAHATI, MAR 3 (PTI): Virtually out of quarterfinal race, Delhi’s disappointing campaign in the Ranji Trophy continued as Chhattisgarh posted 290 for four on the opening day of their elite Group H match here on Thursday. Electing to bat, Chhattisgarh rode on half-centuries from Ajay Mandal (63 off 90 balls), Amandeep Khare (68 not out off 170) and Shashank Singh (75 not out) to pile up a big score in 90 overs and take their side to a strong position in the fourday contest. Mandal and Singh stitched 147 runs for the unconquered fifth wicket to take Chhattisgarh forward. Besides, Sanidhya Hurkat (44) and skipper Harpreet Singh (21) also made useful contributions with the bat. Left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra (2/65) was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi. Delhi are languishing at the last spot in the four-team Group H with just one point from two games and for the Pradeep Sangwan-led side, the tournament is as good as over and only seven points (including a bonus) in the ongoing match against Chhattisgarh will

Russians, Belarusians barred from Paralympics

BEIJING, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred on Thursday from the Winter Paralympics in Beijing on the eve of the Games following threats of boycotts by other teams over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said. Belarus has been a key staging area for the invasion, which was launched a week ago. The decision comes a day after the IPC gave athletes from the two countries the green light to participate as neutrals, saying that the governing body had followed its rules and that “athletes were not the aggressors.” But that decision led to an outcry and threats from other countries’ National Paralympic Committees (NPC) to boycott the Games, IPC President Andrew Parsons told a news conference in Beijing. “They told us that if we do not reconsider our decision, it is now likely to have grave consequences for the Winter Games,” Parsons said. “Multiple NPCs, some of which have been

contacted by their governments, teams and athletes, are threatening not to compete.” Parsons said it was clear the situation put his organization in a “unique and impossible position” so close to the start of the Games, adding that an overwhelming number of members had been in touch and been forthright in their objections to Russia and Belarus taking part. A 71-member Russian contingent and 12-member team from Belarus are

already in Beijing for the Games, which begin on Friday. Parsons said the Russian and Belarusian athletes were victims of the actions of their governments. “Athlete welfare will always be a priority for us,” he said. “If Russian and Belarusian athletes stayed in Beijing, nations were likely to withdraw, and a viable Games would not have been possible. “The atmosphere in the Games village is not pleasant. The situation there

is escalating and has now become untenable ... The Games are not only about gold, silver and bronze, but also about sending a strong message of inclusion.” Parsons said the IPC was likely to face legal consequences but was confident that the right decision had been made. The IPC said earlier in a statement that following a specially convened meeting, its Governing Board has decided not to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part.

Junior Boxing C’ships: Anand enters QFs

In the 52kg opening round bout, John Lapung went down fighting 2-3 against Kyrgyzstan’s Iasynov Nizamedin. The continental showpiece, where both men and women in youth and junior category are competing, has been witnessing strong competition in the presence of 352 boxers from 21 countries, including Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The finals will be held on March 13 and 14.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2022

ISL: ATK Mohun Bagan defeat Chennaiyin FC, enter into semis

FATORDA (GOA), MAR 3 (IANS): ATK Mohun Bagan rode their talisman Roy Krishna’s first-half strike to sail into the semifinals for the second straight year, with a 1-0 victory against Chennaiyin FC in the Hero Indian Super League at the PJN Stadium, here on Thursday. Krishna netted his fifth goal of the season and first this calendar year in the 45th minute and that proved to be the difference in the end as the green and maroons side moved to second in the table with 37 points from 19 matches. They will take on Jamshedpur FC next on March 7 to potentially decide the team that will finish at the top of the table. Jamshedpur have two games in hand and are at the top with 37 points. They take on Odisha FC on Friday. ATKMB bossed the game from the first minute, bombing the Chennaiyin defence with constant attacks, the latter happy to sit back and try to attack on the counter. Roy Krishna gave early warnings after a Kauko through ball sent him clear as the veteran Fiji striker, back in the starting XI after an injury layoff,

found the post in his way. There were no clearcut chances after that early opportunity but the Mariners looked the likelier to score before Chennaiyin started growing into the game and almost keeping ATKMB at bay despite all their adventures in the final third. But just before halftime, Kauko provided a similar pass for Krishna who, unlike at the start of the game, slammed home past a diving Samik Mitra in Chennaiyin goal. Chennaiyin started

the second half on the front foot and almost got their reward three minutes into the hour-mark when a Reagan Singh effort deflected off an ATKMB shirt and came off the post. It was an open half but ATKMB defended well to see off the tie and grab important three points although one would have been enough to seal their semi berth. Chennaiyin, already out of the playoffs race after a forgettable season, finished their engagements with 20 points from the same number of losses.

PHILADELPHIA, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): The Philadelphia 76ers superstar and NBA Eastern Conference team’s winter signing, James Harden, made his home debut as the Sixers beat the New York Knicks 123-108 in a Wednesday NBA game. Harden, who appeared for the first time as a 76ers guard at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center, missed a triple-double with 26 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. But the Sixers stars were balanced in scoring against the Knicks. In addition to Harden, Joel Embiid scored 27 points and took 12 rebounds. Philadelphia guard Tyrese Maxey clocked up 25 points to contribute to the win. Knicks guard RJ Barrett was the game’s top scorer as he racked up 30 points for the visitors. Barrett made seven assists as well. New York power forward Julius Randle added 24 points and

had six rebounds. The game was 75-75 with five minutes and 21 seconds in the third quarter, but the Sixers made extended their lead to double digits near the end of that

period, 93-81. In the fourth quarter, the Sixers did not let their opponents catch them as they secured their fourth win in a row. The Sixers are in the

third position in the Eastern Conference standings, having a 38-23 win/loss record this season. The Knicks are going 25-37 to be 12th in the East, they are competing for the play-in.

KANPUR, MAR 3 (PTI): Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi of Telangana won the 58th edition of Senior National Chess Championship here on Thursday, edging out fellow GMs of Tamil Nadu D Gukesh and P Iniyan in a tie-breaker after the trio finished on 8.5 points each. The 18-year-old Erigaisi remained unbeaten in 11 rounds and ended up with a score of 8.5 points for his maiden Senior National title. He drew his final round game against former champion S P Sethuraman. Gukesh had to settle for a draw against Aryan Chopra while Iniyan moved up to 8.5 points with a fine win over fellow GM Mitrabha Guha of West Bengal. Defending champion Aravindh Chithambaram of Tamil Nadu finished fourth with eight points, while topseed and pre-tournament favourite B Adhinan ended a distant 20th. Erigaisi and Gukesh began the day on eight points and both had a chance of laying their hands

on the top prize. Iniyan defeated Guha to make it an interesting battle for the title. However, Erigaisi and Gukesh were held to draws, meaning a three-way tie for the top place with the former emerging victorious on the basis of a better tiebreak score. Erigaisi has been in impressive form of late and recently won the Tata Steel Challengers title in Wijk

Aan Zee, the Netherlands. The champion received Rs 6 lakh prize money. Important Results of Round 11: Arjun Erigaisi (Telangana) (8.5) drew with S P Sethuraman (8), P Iniyan (TN) (8.5) beat Mitrabha Guha (7.5); Aravindh Chithambaram (TN) (8) drew with Aryan Chopra (Delhi) (8); V Pranav (8) drew with N R Visakh (8); Deep Sengupta (7.5) drew with Aravindh Chitham-

Chelsea’s Timo Werner in action with Luton Town’s Reece Burke on March 2, 2022.

LO N D O N, M A R 3 (AGENCIES): Three more Premier League sides joined Manchester City and Crystal Palace in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup on Wednesday, as Liverpool, Chelsea and Southampton were all victorious in the round of 16. Luton Town 2-3 Chelsea: Chelsea came back from a goal down not once, but twice, to beat 6th-place EFL Championship side Luton Town at Kenilworth Road. Perhaps no three players at Chelsea needed a goal more than Saul Niguez (his first for the club since joining in the summer), Timo Werner (chronically wasteful with

scoring chances during his Chelsea career) and Romelu Lukaku (running extremely hot and cold, both on and off the field, this season), otherwise known as Wednesday’s three goal-scorers. The Blues fell behind after just two minutes, when Reece Burke made a nearpost run to glance a header across the face of goal and nestle the ball just inside the far post. Chelsea equalized through Saul just before the half-hour mark, but Luton Town went back ahead on Harry Cornick’s breakaway and finish in the 40th. Werner, who also assisted Chelsea’s two other goals, equalized with an exqui-

sitely taken touch and finish on 68 minutes, and Lukaku slid in to turn his cross home 10 minutes later. Liverpool 2-1 Norwich City: Takumi Minamino scored both goals for the Reds, as he afforded Mohamed Salah a rare rest by taking his place in the starting lineup. The Japanese international fired home twice in 12 first-half minutes, giving him three goals in the FA Cup this season, to go with four en route to winning the League Cup (nine in all competitions). Southampton 3-1 West Ham: The good times kept rolling for Southampton as they improved to seven games unbeaten, with just one defeat in their last 13 games across all competitions, by beating West Ham 3-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday. Romain Perraud, James Ward-Prowse (penalty kick) and Armando Broja got the goals for Saints, with the final two coming after Michail Antonio’s 60th-minute equalizer, at which point it was a total toss-up who would go on and win it.
