Mizoram CM wants CEO removed

AIZAWL, NOV 5 (PTI/ AGENCIES): Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the immediate removal of state Chief Electoral Officer S.B. Shashank as “people have lost faith in him”. Shashank’s removal is the only solution for smooth conduct of the November 28 Assembly elections, the chief minister said in his letter. He said people of Mizoram have lost faith in the CEO after he complained to the Election Commission of India (ECI) that principal secretary (home) Lalnunmawia Chuaungo was interfering in the poll process. Chuaungo, a 1987batch Gujarat-cadre IAS officer, was relieved of his responsibilities in the state. The recent drop in the international crude oil price and the Rupee’s appreciation against dollar are the main reasons behind the fall in the retail fuel in the country. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday announced that Washington was exempting India from the sanctions on importing oil from Iran. He said US will continue to negotiate with India to cut Iranian imports to zero.

Rio seeks Smriti’s help to Centre release `113 crore to six protect traditional designs border states including Nagaland

D I M A P U R , N OV 5 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio has urged Union Textiles minister Smriti Zubin Irani to issue necessary instructions to officials concerned not to issue patents to anyone other than Naga tribal bodies for the designs and patterns of costumes, attires and handicrafts of Nagaland. In a letter to the Union minister, Rio explained that all Naga tribes were known for their distinct designs and patterns in their shawls, attires and costumes, which were all an integral part of Naga customs and traditions. He said most of the designs and patterns had cultural and historical connotations. The protocol and practice regarding who could wear which costume,

NEW DELHI, NOV 5 (PTI): Centre has released over Rs 113 crore to six border states as part of its plan to ameliorate the problems of people living in these isolated locations, officials said Monday. The Union Home Ministry recently released Rs 113.36 crore to Assam, Nagaland, Sikkim, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand under the Border Area Development Programme (BADP). With this, the Union Home Ministry has released a total of Rs 637.98 crore so far during 2018-19 to states having International Border, a government official said. The funds released so far this fiscal were in addition to Rs 1,100 crore released in 2017-18 for the all-round development of villages located along the

The Border Area Development Programme covers 111 border districts in 17 states to meet special development needs of border population with a focus on the people living within 50 kilometres of the International Border. Border Area Development Programme schemes include construction of primary health centres, schools, supply of drinking water, community centres, connectivity, drainage to enable sustainable living in border areas. It now covers schemes or activities relating to Swachhta Abhiyan, skill development programmes, promotion of sports activities in border areas, promotion of rural tourism, border tourism, protection of heritage sites, construction

of helipads in remote and inaccessible hilly areas, which do not have road connectivity. Skill development training to farmers for the use of modern and scientific techniques in agriculture, organic farming is also part of the Border Area Development Programme now, another official said. As many as 61 model villages are also being developed under the BADP to improve the quality of life for the border population. A total of Rs 13,400 crore has been released since the BADP programme was initiated in 1986-87. India shares border with Pakistan (3,323 km), China (3,488 km), Nepal (1,751 km), Bhutan (699 km), Myanmar (1,643 km) and Bangladesh (4,096 km).

Govt issues guidelines for ‘Operation Greens’ Spl. Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV 5 (NPN): Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) Monday approved the operationalisation strategy for Operation Greens. Operation Greens was announced in the Budget speech of 2018-19 with an outlay of Rs 500 crores to stabilize the supply of Tomato, Onion and Potato (TOP) crops and to ensure availability of TOP crops throughout the country round the year without price volatility. Approving the measures, the Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said “This is a revolutionary scheme which has evolved after sustained dialogue with all stakeholders and we have decided the strategy to stabilize prices of TOP crops and to make sure that TOP crops reach all households in the country round the year.”

DIMAPUR, NOV 5 (NPN): In view of the alarming pollution and hazards caused through wastes, particularly plastics, in Kohima, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has appealed to all citizens of Kohima town, offices and institutions –both government and private –organizations, business establishments, hotels, restaurants, or any such food business operators etc to reduce, if not completely stop the use of plastics, Styrofoam and all such nonbiodegradable items. In a press release, KMC administrator, Kovi Meyase, also appealed to the citizens of to abstain from using onetime use plastics like disposable crockery including spoons, forks and plates etc and bottled mineral water in any function, meetings or congregations.

The appeal was made considering the arrival of the festive season and continuous increase of holding of functions and activities of various kinds. KMC suggested that efforts be made to use steel plates and cups, forks and spoons or any bio-degradable substitutes in place of work, programme or functions. It also suggested that mineral water bottles be replaced by water dispensers. Further, KMC requested citizens to avoid use of plastics carry bags and instead shop with their cloth bags. KMC pointed out that plastics and thermocol cutlery were the biggest pollutants in Nagaland while citing a survey conducted in by an NGO in Kohima. As per the survey, it was estimated that of the

4309 registered shops, each shop utilizes an average of 472 plastic carry bags per day. Therefore, keeping in mind the consequences involved to health and environment , KMC said people must make choices that could reduce use to ultimately adopt a plastic-free lifestyle once again. Citizens have also been requested to avoid throwing plastics or garbage into the streams. KMC reminded wards to put greater efforts into segregation of their wastes from the household levels. In this connection, KMC, in collaboration with the association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat and the Kohima Green Team would further undertake sensitization exercises in all wards, it stated.

DDADU clarifies on autorickshaw fare

DIMAPUR, NOV 5 (NPN): In view of complaints on social media about the alleged hike in autorickshaw fare for town trip, the Dimapur District Autorickshaw Drivers Union (DDADU) has clarified that autorickshaws were to charge Rs.40 for town trip as fixed by regional transport authority. In a press release, DDADU president, I Vitoshe Sema, reminded the commuters to take note of the autorickshaw registration number and lodge complaint with DDADU office if any autorickshaw drivers were found charging more than prescribed rate. He said noting registration number will also help trace belongings left in the autorickshaws. DDADU has also informed all autorickshaw drivers to use signal-lights and strictly follow single lane as directed during a seminar held between DDADU official and DCP traffic zone-1 (officers) at the office of traffic OC zone-1. The union has urged the public to lodge complain of any autorickshaw drivers were found not following traffic rules. With festive season approaching, the union has informed all concerned especially visitors from outside that one could lodge complaint at DDADU head office near Hotel Saramati, Supermarket during office hours (10am to3pm).

Amur Falcon Conservation Week

DIMAPUR, NOV 5 (NPN): Department of tourism and department of environment, forest and climate change (EF&CC) would organise Amur Falcon Conservation Week programme at Doyang Project Site, NEEPCO Wokha from November 8-10, 2018. A three-day event would be graced by Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, on November 8, 2018. Highlights of the programme include zip-line thrill, zorbing, boating, angling, and camping besides experiencing Lotha cuisine such as fresh Doyang fish and organic vegetables. Wokha district administration in collaboration with tourism department and EF&CC department has invited the general public to come and witness the first Amur Falcon Conservation Week.

PDR clarifies, apologies

D I M A P U R , N OV 5 (NPN): Apropos “PDR alleges nepotism in Tourism, LMCP deptts”, published on November 5, 2018, the People for Democratic Rights (PDR) has clarified that the daughter of a commissioner and secretary in one of the departments, had cleared NPSC 2017 exam as research assistant under administrative training institute (ATI) and not as published. PDR through its media and publicity affairs stated that owing to oversight, it had mistakenly mentioned that the daughter of commissioner & secretary cleared NPSC exam as assistant archivist in the department of art & culture. In this regard, PDR has expressed regret for the mistake and apologised to the responsible person who cleared the NPSC exam as assistant archivist in the department of art & culture.
