A H M E DA B A D / HYDERABAD/PUNE, NOV 28 (PTI/Agencies): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune to review the development and manufacturing process of coronavirus vaccines at facilities in these cities. He visited the Zydus Biotech Park in Ahmedabad, Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad and Serum Institute of India in Pune. “The scientists expressed joy that the Prime Minister met them face to face in order to boost their morale and help accelerate their efforts at this critical juncture in the vaccine development journey,” an official statement said. “The Prime Minister expressed pride in the fact that India’s indigenous vaccine development has progressed at such a rapid pace so far. He spoke on how India is following sound principles of science in the entire journey of vaccine development, while also asking for suggestions to make the vaccine distribution process better,” it said. The statement said Modi stressed that India
State’s COVID tally at 11115 D I M A P U R , N OV 2 8 (NPN): Nagaland on Saturday recorded 24 COVID19 positive cases —19 in Dimapur, three in Kohima and one each in Peren and Tuensang, taking the total infection count to 11115. According to state health department’s daily bulletin, 25 COVID-19 positive patients have also recovered—19 in Tuensang, four in Mon and one each in Mokokchung and Phek. Out of the total 11115 positive cases, 9724 have recovered and currently there are 1218 active cases in the state.

The total coronavirus cases increased to 93,51,109 and the death toll climbed to 1,36,200 with the virus claiming 485 more lives, the data updated at 8 am showed. The COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.46 per cent.

EGI objects to PCI’s advisory D I M A P U R , N OV 2 8 (NPN): Editors Guild of India (EGI) Saturday expressed concern over what it described as “unprovoked advisory” issued by the Press Council of India (PCI) on November 25, 2020 to the media, cautioning them against “unregulated circulation” of “foreign contents (sic)”. In a press release, EGI president Seema Mustafa, general secretary Sanjay Kapoor and treasurer Anant Nath asserted that through the advisory, it appeared that the PCI, which swears by self-regulation of media and believes that any government interference would be destructive to press freedom, was lending its weight towards a step that could bring in some form of censorship and punitive actions against those organizations that publish content, which in its view was seen as “not desirable”. Questioning what did “unregulated circulation” even mean, Editors Guild said that the advisory did not specify who would verify the content and on what criterion would it be verified.

Minister PWD (H&M) rejects swap proposal of state lodge in Shillong
D I M A P U R , N OV 2 8 (NPN): Reacting to the pur ported proposal of the Meghalaya urban affairs department for swapping of land of Nagaland medical lodge opposite of NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, the minister PWD (housing and mechanical) Tongpang Ozukum has affirmed that Nagaland (PWD) housing department cannot accept such proposals. In a press statement, minister Tongpang Ozukum said that Nagaland (PWD) housing department has all the legal papers basing on which land was bought on lease for 30 years and few item of works already executed. He said that the Meghalaya urban affairs department should, therefore, give a serious thought on their proposal for swapping of land of Nagaland Medical Lodge with another plot of land. “This is not an issue between Nagaland (PWD) housing department and urban affairs department, Meghalaya but it is a matter of trust and confidence between (Cont’d on p-6) two governments,” Ozu-
kum said. Stating that the Nagaland housing department was yet to receive their proposal letter officially, the minister has, however, said that “we have seen in the whatsapp.” A proposal letter was written by urban affairs department, Meghalaya dated September 30, 2020, addressing principal secretary, home, Nagaland offering a new plot of land measuring 2.34 acres which is located half kilometre away from the present location and a fresh lease agreement to be signed again with government of Meghalaya, Ozukum said. He said that Meghalaya urban affairs department also offered to bear the expenses of the works already executed at the Nagaland Medical Lodge including the boundary walls at the proposed new plot with the same specifications. “But Nagaland (PWD) housing department cannot accept such proposals after 8 years of the lease agreement,” he added. The minister pointed out that foundation stone
laying programme was scheduled on July 11, 2018 for the commencement of the remaining works. However, he said it could not be held due to some local problems. He said that Meghalaya chief minister gave assurance to Nagaland chief minister to resolve their local issues at the earliest and allow Nagaland to go ahead with the programme as planned. Fo l l ow i n g w h i c h , Ozukum said he had also met Meghalaya chief minister, home minister, minister incharge of urban affairs and some other leaders on the same issue. At the second meeting with Hamletson Dohling, the then minister urban affairs department on November 14, 2019, Ozukum said they “unexpectedly” proposed to swap the land citing some local issues. “However, we made our stand very clear that their proposal is unacceptable since every procedure, right from beginning of acquiring the land were done legally and with mutual understanding,” Ozukum said.

D I M A P U R , N OV 2 8 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has expressed deep concern over the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF)’s 45% reservation demand in the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) and questioned whether “the very purpose of the exorbitant demand” was to sabotage and derail the long-drawn effort to constitute the NSSB into a reality. In a representation addressed to the chief minister, NSF president Ninoto Awomi and General Secretary Liremo R Kikon pointed out that as per the existing policy the Eastern Nagas were enjoying 25%, the Chakhesang/Pochury 6%, Zeliang 4%, Sumi of Kiphire 2% and the physically challenged 4%. NSF said that the total percentage of reservation in
jobs in Nagaland presently stood at 41%, which oit claimed was “perhaps one of the highest” in India. Further, the federation stated that the very purpose of the demand for setting up NSSB was to discourage random backdoor appointments and to encourage meritocracy. In the given circumstance, NSF said “if a particular group or community resorted to unreasonable and exorbitant demands, it defeats the purpose of cohesive united stand on an equal footing in a harmonious society.” NSF stated that total percentage of reservation in the State would increase to 61% if the state government had to concede to ENSF demands. “Such a development would be detrimental to the intellectual growth of the younger generation, defeat competitive mindset
and ultimately murder meritocracy in the State,” NSF asserted. The federation maintained that the purpose of any student body was to promote students and youth welfare activities with the ultimate purpose of promoting meritocracy. NSF expressed the view that within the reasonable purview of law, reservation should be provided to bridge the gap. It also said that demands for reservation should be within reasonable bounds so as not to defeat meritocracy for a progressive society. The federation said that there should be equal criteria on educational qualification for all jobs, “because the qualificational divide between the so called advanced tribes and the backward tribes is no more exis(Cont’d on p-6) tent.”
Forest deptt releases python back into wild D I M A P U R , N OV 2 8 (NPN): State department of environment forests & climate change (EF&CC) has released a Burmese Rock Python (Python bivittatus) into the wild at Longra village on November 28 morning in the presence of Longra village council. In a press release, wildlife warden, Kiphire wildlife division, Suman W M Sivachar, said that the python had strayed into the paddy fields of the village on November 27, 2020. Kiphire wildlife division was intimated of the matter by DFO Tuensang Zupeni Tsanglai on the evening of November 27, 2020, since Tuensang district comes under its jurisdiction for wildlife related matters, wildlife warden said. K O H I M A , N OV 2 8 (NPN): One carriageway of the four-lane Sanuorü bridge along the main road connecting Nagaland Secretariat with the rest of Kohima town is expected to be opened for traffic from November 30, 2020. So far only one carriageway of the four-lane bridge has been completed, but owing to the problems faced by the daily commuters along the makeshift road alongside the bridge, authorities have reportedly decided to partially open it for traffic. Officials from the PWD (R&B) department working at the site disclosed that other half of the bridge was yet to be completed since the main arch builder had not returned after leaving for his native place due to Covid-19. The 50-meter long and 17-meter high bridge is yet to see the light of day even after more than four years. The cost of the bridge
was initially pegged at Rs 20 crore when the work was sanctioned, but later escalated to Rs 37 crore, disclosed PWD (R&B) South Division, ‘Kohima, executive engineer, Vizotuo Seletsu during a press briefing in month of July earlier this year. He had also disclosed that 75% of the work had been completed within 12 months after work had first begun at the site. Earlier this year in the month of January, the Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) had expressed its unhappiness at the pace of the construction work. ENSF rejects govt’s appeal; Fuel prices hiked to go ahead with planned stir Correspondent
KOHIMA, NOV 28 (NPN): Even as the state chief secretary Saturday appealed to withdraw the ultimatum, the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has decided to go ahead with the agitation as planned starting November 30 at 6am. In a press release, ENSF president Sepili L Sangtam stated that a meeting called by the chief secretary office on Saturday remained inconclusive as the state government could not fulfil the federation’s genuine demand. Sangtam said that the federation has decided to go ahead with the proposed indefinite democratic agitation in the five districts of Eastern Nagaland. ENSF has informed that in the phase-I agitation government offices would
be locked and movement of government registered vehicles would be restricted. However, the office and the movement of vehicle of district administration, police, medical fire & emergency services and central agencies vehicles have been exempted from the purview of the agitation. ENSF cautioned that in the event of any wanted incident the state government would be held solely responsible. The federation has further directed all its federating units to strictly follow the present Covid-19 SOPs. D I M A P U R , N OV 2 8 (NPN): State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased the prices of petrol and diesel across all metro on Saturday. After today’s rate revision, the price of petrol in the national capital was hiked to Rs.82.13 per litre, while diesel increased to Rs.72.13 per litre. According to IOCL website, petrol price in Dimapur rose to Rs.84.79 per litre and diesel price increased to Rs. 75.60 per litre on Saturday. In the state capital Kohima, a litre of petrol and diesel stood at Rs.85.64 and Rs.76.30 respectively. In five days, petrol price has gone up by 53 paise and diesel prices by 95 paise per litre. With Saturday’s increase, petrol prices have now risen by Rs 1.07 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.67 a litre since November 20. K Y M C

NPP hits back at Congress Schools not to resume in most NE states leader on corruption allegations
AIZAWL/SHILLONG/ AGARTALA, NOV 28 (IANS): Most of the northeastern states took varied decisions on the resumption of classes in schools on a regular basis even as Assam had reopened educational institutions on November 2 after more than seven months, officials said on Saturday. According to the officials, Tripura and Manipur have yet to decide on the reopening of schools on a regular basis while the Mizoram government has announced that schools will remain shut till the year end to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The Meghalaya government has allowed schools in the rural areas to reopen from December 1 for students of class VI onwards but with the consent of their parents while schools in urban areas would resume normal classes for students of Class IX to XII. However, no northeastern state including Assam has yet decided on resumption of classes below the fifth standard.
Most NE states have not decided on resumption of classes.
Tripura Education Department Director Uttam Kumar Chakma said that 50 per cent teachers and staff are coming to schools across the state since October 15. Students of Class IX to XII are allowed to come to school for counselling by the teachers with the permission of their parents. “The high level committee constituted by the state government has recommended resuming the classes of X to XII and in degree colleges on a regular basis from December 1. The state government on its own has not yet issued any notification to reopen the regular classes of schools,” Chakma told IANS. He said that stu-
dents of classes VI to VIII can come to school with the consent of their parents or guardians for counselling by the teachers. In Shillong, Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that for the schools to reopen and resume teaching, parents or guardians have to give their consent for their children and attendance by students was not mandatory. In Imphal, officials said that there is no government plan as yet to reopen educational institutions in Manipur. “Both government and private schools shall remain closed in Manipur until the state government issues the specific notifica-

merican voters on November 4 have decided that their next president is going to be Democratic Party candidate and president-elect Joe Biden. After oath in January 20,2021 Joe Biden will be the 46th president of the USA. Joe Biden won handsomely polling over 80 million votes, six million more than Trump. In addition Biden received 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232 votes. Donald Trump received the second-most votes of all time, with 73,890,295. Over 159 million Americans voted this year, according to the United States Elections Project (USEP)- surpassing 2016 numbers by more than 20 million. More votes were cast in the 2020 presidential election than in any other in U.S. history. The turnout rate was also the highest it has been in more than 100 years. USEP currently estimates that about 66.7% of eligible voters cast ballots this year, the highest since 1900. The transition has been dogged by controversies after Trump refused to call it a day and accept defeat gracefully. His legal team took the fight to various state courts. However none of the courts entertained Trump’s petition as they saw no conclusive evidence to suggest fraud as alleged. Any legal petition has to be backed up with sufficient evidence otherwise it would amount to waste of time. While Trump only managed to project himself as a very bad loser, his rival Joe Biden spoke of Unifying America Again. It may be recalled that Trump’s clarion call to Make America Great Again has achieved only the opposite in terms of image and reputation of the Trump presidency. Of course, despite whatever he stood for Trump was no easy pushover. He has the backing of conservatives especially the economically struggling middle class. His appeal across America particularly among right wing and conservatives was undiminished. Biden had more campaign funds at reportedly $177 million as against Trump’s $63 million. Trump was a relatively unpopular incumbent with an economy that was strong for much of his term, but was devastated by a global pandemic. His defeat was exactly what we would expect: decisive, but not a blowout. The relationship between the summer’s presidential approval and final presidential vote choice worked as it usually does. For the world Biden will be a return to diplomacy, environment, open doors for immigrants, rebuilding bridges with China, support for WHO and UN. Those who will be happy will be the Iranians after Biden announced resumption of the nuclear deal that Trump revoked; 11 million illegal aliens for whom Biden promised to produce comprehensive immigration legislation that creates a pathway to citizenship. Biden promised to “immediately rescind” current restrictions imposed by Trump that bar people in “some Muslim-majority countries” from travelling or immigrating to the United States. He also proposes to renew and re-strengthen ties with former western allies. Israel may not be on Biden’s priority as he would seek to walk on the middle path in the middle east. All these were expected by President Donald Trump and his administration who had called Biden a Trojan horse for the radical left. For India, a Biden administration could prove more economically beneficial as well as concurrence on climate change. However, India cannot expect a Biden administration to come out strongly against China or Pakistan in support of India. Americans are reminded that though Trump is gone, Trumpism and all that he stood for will remain.

We have to realize that we cannot earn or win anything from God through our own efforts. We must either receive it as a gift or do without it. The greatest spiritual blessing we receive is when we come to the knowledge that we are destitute. Until we get there, our Lord is powerless. He can do nothing for us as long as we think we are sufficient in and of ourselves. We must enter into His kingdom through the door of destitution. As long as we are “rich,” particularly in the area of pride or independence, God can do nothing for us. It is only when we get hungry spiritually that we receive the Holy Spirit. The gift of the essential nature of God is placed and made effective in us by the Holy Spirit. He imparts to us the quickening life of Jesus, making us truly alive. He takes that which was “beyond” us and places it “within” us. And immediately, once “the beyond” has come “within,” it rises up to “the above,” and we are lifted into the kingdom where Jesus lives and reigns (see John 3:5).

India should give emergency approval for the Covid-19 vaccine
A
re you one of those people who has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Covid vaccine? I certainly am. And the news over the last couple of days has been worrying and confusing. Why am I so keenly awaiting a vaccine? Well, because I don’t think that there is any other way of ending the pandemic. In India at least (and I am sure, in the rest of the world) the sensible advice given by doctors (wear masks, practice social distancing, etc.) has been largely ignored by a significant proportion of citizens. So any solution that relies on common sense will not work. Medicine will have to provide the solutions. But there is good news. Well, kind of, anyway. For many months we, in India, have waited for the Serum Institute of India, a Pune based company, to make the Oxford vaccine available to us. The Serum Institute and many doctors believe that this vaccine, developed
by Oxford University will work against the virus. The Serum Institute’s promoters were so confident that they put several hundred million dollars of their own money into producing the vaccine so that by the time the approvals came, they would be ready to roll out millions of doses. Initial projections suggested that the vaccine would be available by October but delays in the testing process have meant that December seems a more likely date. But even as Indians have focused on the Oxford vaccine there has been significant progress elsewhere. The Chinese have their own vaccines which they claim are effective. The Russians are touting their Sputnik vaccine around the world. There is also an indigenous vaccine developed in India which has shown encouraging results in testing. All in all, at least 30 vaccines, the world over, are in various stages of development and
most seem to work. The issue with a vaccine is not just that it must work. It must also have no or, at any rate, few sideeffects. That’s why the process of testing takes so long --- scientists want to wait and see if sideeffects are developing. But in the case of the Covid vaccine, because of the global health emergency, this time period has been drastically shortened and the US FDA is likely to start approving vaccines next month. Sadly, it now looks like the Oxford vaccine will not be one of them. Two other contenders have shown much better results. A vaccine developed by Pfizer has efficacy rates of 90 per cent. And another one developed by Moderna has performed as impressively in trials. This is good news for the world but not necessarily as good for us in India. The Pfizer vaccine can only be kept at very low temperatures and therefore is unsuited to storage and
transportation in the Third World. The Moderna vaccine is easier to transport but it is expensive and most of the first year’s production seems to have been earmarked for the West. The Oxford vaccine has run into trouble because of a flaw in the testing conducted by AstraZeneca, its global partner. Originally, the vaccine was expected to be around 70 per cent effective, which is not a bad success rate for a vaccine. But after the claims of 90 per cent made by Pfizer and Moderna 70 per cent did not seem very impressive. And so perhaps AstraZeneca tried hard to boost its own numbers. There was also an error in the testing method. Researchers in the UK gave around 2800 volunteers a half dose of the vaccine while the other 20,000 participants in a test were given full doses. This was due to a mistake in calculating the dose. Surprisingly the 2800 who got the half dose did
better. They showed 90 per cent efficacy. The full group which got the correct dose showed only 62 per cent efficacy. What made the difference? There are many theories. But there is also one doubt: the 2800 who got the half dose may have been younger. And younger people shake off Covid more effectively, anyway. So does the Oxford vaccine provide 90 per cent immunity (as the other vaccines claim to) if given in a half dose? We don’t know. Age could have been a factor. And 2800 participants is too small a number to draw any long-term conclusions. It is these kinds of doubts that have harmed the reputation of the Oxford vaccine. Plus, say some reports, the testing conducted by AstraZeneca varied in method across countries. So it is hard to come up with an average efficacy rate from diverse studies. What does it mean for us in India who have
been waiting for the vaccine? In my view, it doesn’t make a lot of difference despite all the sound and fury. The Serum Institute has been testing the vaccine in India, at full doses, among 1600 people and early results show an efficacy rate of 60 to 70 percent. If the tests are redone with a half dose, it is possible that these figures might go up. (Or not. Let’s wait and see.) I doubt if America will approve the Oxford vaccine any time soon. But we, in India, should give it emergency approval as soon as possible. We are at such a desperate stage that a cheap, easy to transport, vaccine with between 60 to 70 per cent efficacy will save lakhs of lives. Yes, there are problems with AstraZeneca’s testing. But the tests have not shown any harmful side-effects. So why delay? Why hold out for some 90 per cent efficacy figure? Let’s just go ahead and beat this damn pandemic. Vir Sanghvi
Advent-2020 amidst Coronavirus Redesigning urban spaces for women
I
mmense importance is given to Advent in the Christian calendar than any other event. The reason being Advent ushers the faithful to adopt fresh insights and existential perspective. Further, Advent propels Christians to look forward toward a rapidly approaching event, one that sets the Christians to the ultimate point from which the entire episode is premised wherein Jesus, the Christ, taking the human form. Therefore, Advent is historic that unfolds Christ’s event,as we observe and celebrate year after every year for many centuries. But, Advent 2020 will be different than the previous years. In such ironic settings Advent expects something different for us offering new insights. Our expectation and the mystery of Advent are looming. We need to look forward with mounting expectations to a near-future event: Jesus coming to the world we live taking human form, the irruption of the Kingdom of God, and the dawn of a New Age. Yet, there are events that have already occurred at a specific moment in past history. In order to be part of these events, we should go back to the biblical texts, in which the nature of God’s intentions for the entire humanity with promises and hope about to be fulfilled. The paradox continues as the significance of the Christ event has not come to fruition‘here and now’. Though we may claim or assume that we stand on the brink of something spectacular, with the power to shatter our limited human expectations about ourselves, our neighbors, our world, and our God, we are muted by some forces or the other. For instance, where we stand currently is totally fluid that can hardly be dragonized and determined, and so, we do not know where we are heading and how are we going to re-start our lives as usual. We live in unchartered terrains. COVID-19 has fundamentally challenged our ways of life and our worldview and thus diametrically changing everything. It has thoroughly exasperated our ways of living, eating, dressing, entertaining, working, worshipping and moving around. It has been with us all through this year. Coronavirus isalso drastically re-shaping our ideas and the world we are going live in the near present and the future to come. In such settings, does God’s action in Christ is just more than a matter of soaring rhetoric or the deepest yearlings of the human heart, though these factors do shape the way the story is told. The texts mention about the Christ event occurred and interpreted in conformity with what was expected and longed for, but also there has been also an unprecedented explosion expected. The nature of the text is such that makes us to go back to Bethlehem igniting our participation in the world in which we live and thus sparking to establish God’s order. We are kindled by our awareness of the full impact of the Christ event in the biblical story, in the history of faith, and in our
personal lives. Advent in Latin means “a coming” is the season to celebrate the coming of the Lord. Traditionally it is like a reminder of the last days when Christ returns. For Christians, its deepest significance lies in the fact that it is a time to anticipate the incarnation and to make room for his coming amongst us.Advent-2020 has totally altered Christians’ view. However, we view and understand eschatologically or in terms of the incarnation, our views and understanding hardly represent the current fissures around us.Coronavirus has altered our attitudes and behavior. By the time Christmas arrives in particular this time our ways of thinking, behaving and celebrating would entirely be different. Advent-2020 calls us to concentrate on the “one thing vital” (Luke 10:42) to get engaged in enriching the lives of our congregations, communities and everyone with a sense of God’s presence. Then advent become meaningful to make way for the rebirth of Christ in our lives. There are three perspective from which Advent could be views:Perspective One is about the anticipation of the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord coming to us taking the human form is historic wherein divine becoming human which is to be considered as holy for the whole people of God. Perspective Two is about the recognition of the “eschaton” wherein God’s presence—the present and future are subsumed concretely as we fuse by de-mythologizing and hopeenlivening weaving in one thread. We need to view the present times and end-times as continuum, not by isolating the time and space. Perspective Three is all about Christ’s coming in the present—rather than the past or future happening used to be the most familiar approach to the Advent. Keeping aside this approach, Advent-2020 need to view the present thatassimilates the future--the vision and hope with grandeur amidst unprecedented chaos and appalling devastations. When coronavirus has leveraged the present and future plans of human life and livelihood in such ways by rocking the entire world to extremities and leveraged all aspects of our lives to alarming levels, what does Advent-2020 mean to us? In such a context, Advent-2020 is bound to offer spiritual freshness, new hope and vision in a world of a variety of experiences. Fluidity unfolds new challenges, fresh insights, new beginning and pragmatic vision for the present and future. God becoming human in Jesus, thus offers hope and joy to the entire world despite gloom and doom. Advent2020 throws new challenges and new meanings by pushing us to ponder over how vulnerable we are and in that God in Jesus incarnating as a human facing all sorts of vulnerability showing solidarity with us. o make cities womenfriendly, urban planners must focus on two core issues —greater safety from violence and adequate childcare support. Urban planning in India does not factor in gender perspectives. Cities need to be redesigned to address the concerns of women; so that women can work, look after their families easily, and without having to expend more energy, time and money than men do. The 2019 Safe City Index, prepared by the Economist Intelligence Unit, ranks Mumbai and Delhi as one of the worst cities where women’s safety is concerned. The Index ranked cities on indicators of personal security, digital security and infrastructure security, among other things. All these have a multiplier effect on the position of women — these can negatively affect their access to public spaces, jobs and even how much leisure time they can spend. Indifference to concerns of women results in a difficult commute and poor childcare facilities. To make cities women-friendly, urban planners must focus on two core issues —greater safety from violence and adequate childcare support. Much of the current discourse focusses on improving street lighting and providing safe toilets. These are important but even more critical to making public spaces safer is mixed land-use planning. The segregation of commercial and residential areas automatically increases the commute from work to home and creates entry barriers to mobility for women. Mixed land-use, by encouraging office space and commercial areas in residential localities, makes for regular use of streets, better lighting and encourages women to use public spaces. We already have an example in the planned city of Chandigarh, one of the safest
for women in India. This city factored in local markets, commercial offices, schools, public parks, post offices, police posts and medical clinics into the design of each small locality or sector. Shaded footpaths were created for walking such that it was possible to cover the city on foot and remain in the shade. And, yet, extensive mixed-use was simply not replicated in other Indian cities. Chandigarh remained an isolated example. A 2019 Ola Mobility Institute study, which surveyed men and women in 11 cities in India, said that while 80% respondents lived within a 15-minute walking distance of a bus stop, only 47% either walked or cycled to the bus stop. The others used shared transport, two-wheelers and cars. Shared transport has been found to be generally unsafe. But in the absence of dedicated footpaths or cycle tracks, women commuters have little option. In reimagining urban spaces, we must not focus on somewhat vacuous efforts such as creating special transport services for women. It would, instead, be far more beneficial to sensitise men to be more civil. Already, various surveys have shown that the majority of men in India do not approve of boorish behaviour towards women. The 2015-16 National Family Health Survey indicated that 58% husbands disapproved of wife-beating. In a UN Women-sponsored household survey on sexual violence in public spaces in Delhi in 2012, 94% men said that people should intervene if they see sexual harassment in public spaces. This needs to be built upon and civility inculcated. The other priority must be reliable childcare facilities, which are necessary if we expect women to enter the job market, sustain jobs and also pursue leisure activities.
Ensuring that enough creches are available throughout the city is important to set women free and support them in discharging their parental duties. For construction sites, mobile creches could be the answer. Recent research by economist Ashwini Deshpande shows that in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, those with children below five years suffered the most in the job market. In April 2019, the average employment of women in this category was 7.8%. This dropped sharply to 2.9% in April 2020. In August 2020, it recovered slightly to 3.5%. What is noteworthy is that it was the most highly-educated women who suffered the maximum job losses. For those with qualifications higher than postgraduate and children below five years of age, the average employment shrank drastically in April 2020, as per the report. With work-from-home becoming the norm, it is the aspirational group of women who lost out the most. An institutional support structure that can take care of this responsibility would improve female participation in the labour force. It is entirely possible to address such gaps through pilot projects in smaller townships. If well executed, such projects will draw the population away from the mega-cities. The safety of women is a major concern in any household location decision. Undertaking such projects does not require much by way of capital. Various projects for upgrading city infrastructure are already in execution throughout India. Those can easily be tweaked to incorporate gender perspectives. I, Mr Pauheikobe, Son of Mr Lt. Adin of Mbaulwa Village, and a resident of Dimapur{city} am a YouTuber by the name JPollnd-The entertainer. I committed a crime against women through my YouTube videos involving a group of women recognized as Tetseo Sisters which amounted to outraging their modesty, causing irreparable damage to their reputation, defaming their image, harassment, physical threats and social embarrassment due to my actions. I wrote a song called a “diss track” titled “Adventures of the moon man and slim” on my YouTube Channel. In the song, I used derogatory words insulting their character, vulgar and indecent terms that were damaging, and hateful towards the sisters. The sisters were subjected to vicious abuse, harassment and even physical threats by my audience and followers online because of me. I did not take any action to correct assumptions, the backlash or discourage anyone from making such threats, name calling, shaming and abuse towards them. I did not realize my mistake and created more contents ridiculing the sisters. I played the victim card out of frustration, justifying my actions to my followers and audience, inciting them to protect my channel and defaming the sisters till I was summoned for questioning by the Women Cell, Nagaland Police, based on an FIR filed by the victims. I have now realized my mistake and that my actions have consequences including facing legal measures and punishment by law. I unconditionally offer my sincere regrets and apologies publicly for the pain, mental trauma and harassment faced by Tetseo Sisters, their family, community and well-wishers. I cannot undo my earlier actions but I undertake that I will not repeat such behavior or mistake ever again, towards Tetseo Sisters or any other woman. Further, I request all my followers/well-wishers to refrain from bothering/ harassing Tetseo Sisters – any and all of them, and any woman in general, online or any platform in the future because it is a crime with serious consequences. I give my word to the authority to be on my best behavior and take responsibility for any future inconveniences faced by Tetseo Sisters as a result of my wrong actions, my contents and those of my followers as well. I will also do my best to repair the damage I have caused to the sisters. I have no knowledge of the victims’ personal/ public life and whatever I wrote about them is baseless and untrue. It was purely out of my personal state of mind, fiction and imagination for which I am ashamed. With God as my witness and in the presence of the Officer In Charge, Women Cell Nagaland Police, I state that I am truly sorry and sincerely seek forgiveness from Tetseo Sisters and everyone else I have hurt in this connection, in sound mind and under no duress, and fully understanding the consequences. TEHRAN, Nov 28 (AP): Iran’s supreme leader on Saturday called for the “definitive punishment” of those behind the killing of a scientist linked to Tehran’s disbanded military nuclear program, a slaying the Islamic Republic has blamed on Israel. Ba h r a in, N ov 2 8 (IANS): Indian racing star Jehan Daruvala earned his maiden FIA Formula 2 podium at the Bahrain Grand Prix Support Race on Saturday. The Red Bull Racing Junior is the first Indian to stand on the podium in an FIA Formula 2 Race, in the present era of the championship. The F2 season moved to Sakhir, Bahrain, for the last two rounds of the F2 championship, and Daruvala immediately showed his pace in the only practice session. In the last 15 minutes, Daruvala posted a lap time of 1:42.782 seconds to go fastest. With just five minutes left, Nikita Mazepin of Russia went faster by a mere 0.122 secs. Qualifying threatened to completely undo all of Daruvala’s efforts. He faced traffic on his quick laps that allowed him to post a time that was quick enough for eighth on the grid, two places ahead of Championship leader Mick Schumacher. Daruvala and other racers on the Medium compound of tyre, then seemed to struggle against those on the Hard Compound. Lap 5 saw Daruvala lose two places and was forced off the circuit. The resulting loss of speed lost him more positions. Daruvala stayed in tenth for a few laps before pitting to change tyres. The 22 year old Indian emerged from the pit
down in 18th place. He then reeled of a series of quick laps to climb up the order. He gained more positions as others pitted and was running sixth by lap 19 of the 32 lap race. Daruvala soon overtook multiple race winner Robert Shwartzman to move up to fifth. Race leader Mick Schumacher then took his mandatory pit stop. Daruvala’s blistering pace after his own pit stop meant that Schumacher emerged from the pits behind Daruvala, who was now running third.
