Correspondent KOHIMA, NOV 26 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday launched the Tourist Police (TP) expected to play a crucial role in the forthcoming Hornbill and expressed optimism that the personnel will become the new ambassadors of Nagaland as the first point contact in case of any emergency. KO H I M A , N OV 2 6 (NPN): Union Home minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate the 19th edition of Hornbill Festival on December 1, coinciding with the Nagaland Statehood Day, at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama. Informing this on the sidelines of the launching of Tourist police here, chief minister Neiphiu Rio said many diplomats and officials of various embassies including Senate from Australia will be attending the event. Though many personalities have expressed their desire to visit the state festival, Rio however lamented limited accommodations-hotels and home stays to host them. Meanwhile, adviser H. Khehovi Yepthomi also informed media persons that Union Home minister Rajnath Singh will be the chief guest with US Ambassador to India Kenneth I Juster as guest of honour. Nagaland governor PB Acharya will be the chief host while Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio will be the host for the event.

Rio called upon the Tourist Police never to fail any visitor so that the earlier negative image of the State could be changed. He also suggested that trained TP personnel should be deployed at mini hornbill festivals so that they could train the local police and in turn lead to more awareness among the police about becoming tourist-friendly to make visitors feel safe while visiting the State. The chief minister also said tourist could visit in
groups and go for trekking to different locations that may not necessarily be designated as tourist spots but TP should deal with them in a friendly manner. On the mission to make Nagaland plastic free, Rio said the government would try to actively discourage use of plastic from December 1 but also admitted that it might not be successful overnight. Mentioning that foreign embassies in India issued travel advisories to their domestic tourists after studying the situation of a particular area, the chief minister remarked that for long even people from mainland India did not feel safe to come to Nagaland due to the unresolved Naga political issue and imposition of AFSPA. He reiterated his government’s commitment to facilitate resolving the vexed issue. Rio spoke about Nagas being different and unique and for which the Government of India recognised their unique history and granted special provisions under Article 371 (A) of the Indian constitution. NPF slams Patton for alleged threat on CS D I M A P U R , N OV 2 6 (NPN): NPF has jumped in the fray over a report in social media which alleged that deputy chief minister (DY. CM) Y Patton, who is also in charge of home department, had threatened chief secretary R Benchilo Thong over the issue of acceding to request from Addl. DG Police Rupin Sharma to be attached with Nagaland house New Delhi. NPF through its Press Bureau, expressed shocked at the manner in which Patton allegedly threatened the chief secretary . NPF recalled that , Sharma, who was removed as DGP couple of months back, was trying to go on deputation again with initial posting to Nagaland House, New Delhi so as to enable him to also pursue deputation and also medical check up and that the file was under process .
NPF alleged that the home commissioner had moved the file for granting of medical leave to Sharma whenhe( Sharma) had not applied for any such leave. Due to the controversy, the matter was brought to the notice of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, said NPF. NPF said Rio agreed to Sharma’s request to be deputed and attached to Nagaland house and after which CMO issued directive to the home commissioner to put up the file for Rio. What followed next was shocking said NPF as sources disclosed that , the Deputy CM threatened to “finish off Thong” after he (Patton) returned from Mizoram. Patton had led a state BJP delegation of legislators to Mizoram to campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections. NPF asked people as
to how far would they bear such unruly behaviour of their political leaders and how safe would other public servants be at the hands of “these brutes” when a top bureaucrat himself was openly threatened like this?. NPF assumed that the chief secretary had become sandwiched between the chief minister and Deputy CM due to their “clash of interest and not for welfare of the State”. Expressing amusement over Rio’s silence over the matter, NPF asked the chief minster to issue a clarification so that no official suffered like this. NPF further alleged that the PDA government was marred by one controversy after another that depicted insecurity deep within. It asked the PDA government not to disgrace law of the land and enforce it.

On the occasion, Rio released the Tourist Police Handbook and launched Nagaland Police FIR Mobile App. Rio also flagged off the tourist police vehicle and inaugurated the integrated control room. Addressing the gathering, deputy chief minister Y Patton acknowledged the Tourism department for helping Nagaland join a few other States in the country to have a separate TP force. Sunil Arora appointed CEC NEW DELHI, NOV 26 (AGENCIES): Sunil Arora has been appointed the new Chief Election Commissioner by President Ram Nath Kovind, sources said on Monday. He will take over from OP Rawat on December 2. A former bureaucrat, Arora was appointed to the election body in September last year. Arora, 62, had been the Information and Broadcasting Secretary, and Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. A 1980 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Arora has worked in ministries and departments such as Finance, Textiles and Planning Commission. He also served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation during 19992002 and CMD, Indian Airlines for five years (two years as additional charge and three years as full charge). In Rajasthan, besides district postings in Dholpur, Alwar, Nagaur and Jodhpur, he was Secretary to the Chief Minister during 1993-1998 and Principal Secretary to CM (2005- 2008) and handled Information and Public Relations (IPR), Industries and Investment Departments.
NDPP unit ticks off intending candidate
DIMAPUR, NOV 26 (NPN): An overeager intending candidate of the ruling NDPP, has been ticked off by the party’s Mokokchung region for jumping the gun in publishing his biography under the party’s letter head to declare his candidature for the bypoll to the 26 Aonglenden assembly seat. President NDPP Mokokchung region N.Bendang Jamir , in a statement , drew attention to the publication of biography in social media by Lipokzulu and misusing the party’s letter head. Bendang said the NDPP Mokokchung disapproved of “such irresponsible act” by a senior party leader and appealed to all party rank and file not to be misled by such an unauthorised publication. Further NDPP Mokokchung reaffirmed that it will abide by the decision of the Central party office over the issue of allotment of party ticket for the bypoll. Meanwhile, Lipokzulu has been removed as the in-charge of the party’s 26 Assembly constituency as disciplinary action.
Nagaland observes ‘Constitution Day’ DIMAPUR, NOV 26 (NPN): To mark the anniversary of the adoption of Constitution on November 26, 1949, the Constitution Day was observed at Raj Bhavan Kohima on Monday. On the occasion, the state chief secretary, R Binchilo Thong, administered the pledge and delivered the opening remarks. Thong said that the Preamble contains the aim and objectives of India and protects the whole philosophy and legislative intent of the Constitution. He stated that the Constitution of India was the fundamental law of the land. High Court Bar Association president, Ashiphri Zho, stated that the Indian Constitution was important in several dimensions as it was the noble and universal book for the people of India. “It lays down the basic structure of the government under which its people are to be governed and establishes

Kohima, Nov 26 (NPN): State government has earmarked Rs.5 crore for this year’s Honbill Festival, said adviser Tourism and Art & Culture H. Khehovi Yepthomi on Monday. Disclosing this at a press conference for the upcoming Hornbill Festival at the Conference Hall Tourism Department here Monday, Yepthomi maintained that the Hornbill Festival was not for revenue generation, saying that the benefit went to the people. Hectic preparation for 10-day annual Hornbill Festival is in full swing with the inaugural function programme scheduled to be held on December 1 at 3:30pm at Naga Heri-

Yepthomi informed the traditional blessings for the Hornbill Festival would be done by village chief Shikuto Zalipu and 10-day festival would witness cultural dances, indigenous foods items, handicrafts, music festival, traditional games, night cardinal and others. Secretary art and culture Ahola Ao informed that various cultural dances by 17 tribes of Nagaland with 35 members from each cultural troupe totalling to more than 600 artistes would be displayed from day 1-10. Police nab 3 for Nov 20 State govt all shooting; 1 for extortion set to host FFC
DIMAPUR, NOV 26 (NPN): Dimapur police have arrested three persons in connection with the firing incident at Riven Honda showroom, River Belt colony Dimapur on November 20, 2018. According to Dimapur Police PRO, the three have been remanded in police custody for further interrogation. In connection with the firing incident, a case was registered with West police station. It may be mentioned that Public Action Committee (PAC) of the Naga Council Dimapur had served a 7-day deadline on the state government to effect immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the November 20 shooting incident, failing which it had threatened to impose a 12-hour complete bandh in Dimapur district from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 30. Extortion from Church construction site: Meanwhile, Dimapur police on November 26 arrested one person identified as Kughato Swu (31), of Khehokhu village, under Dimapur district on charges of extorting from a Church construction site in Dimapur town. Dimapur police PRO in a press note stated that a case has been registered with Diphupar Police station for further investigation.
