GoI-Khango group ready for talks

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 4 (NPN): Following weeks of speculations and the mediation by Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) which was endorsed by the Khango-led NSCN (K) group to act as go-between, both GoI and Khango-led group has purportedly agreed to clear the decks and begin the process of negotiation. In a statement, NGBF media cell disclosed that the federation, during its meeting with the Khango-led group at Yankhao village on October 25, was officially endorsed to pursue the issue with the Centre in order pave the way for the group to enter into ceasefire at the earliest. At the meeting NGBF said Khango acknowledged the appeal of the Nagas and decided to resume ceasefire with the Centre. NGBF said Khangoled NSCN (K) also placed a four-point demand to the GoI for consideration-- lift ban imposed on NSCN and removal of terrorist tag; rescind the bounties placed on NSCN leaders; repeal AFSPA/DDA on the enforced Naga areas and unconditional release of NSCN cadres arrested after the abrogation of ceasefire and undergoing

According to NGBF, the Centre, in response to NSCN (K)’s four-point demand, issued statement saying it “never abrogated the ceasefire with NSCN (K), but NSCN (K) walked away from ceasefire in March 2015. But, government of India still stands and welcomes NSCN (K) for peace talks. The statement also mentioned that government of India has no objection

for NSCN (K) to maintain their entity. It stated that as soon as NSCN (K) comes into peace process dialogue with the Centre, ban on NSCN (K), terrorist tag and bounties on its leaders will be automatically removed/ close. Further, the statement reportedly mentioned that the Centre welcomes NSCN (K) for peace talks anytime. However, Centre said it was committed to solve the Naga issue with one comprehensive solution and therefore cannot have many agreements. At this juncture, Centre conveyed that it was not in a state to take up third party with fresh negotiation. Government of India

however welcomed NSCN (K) stated that there should not be any insecurity from NSCN (K) part. Accordingly, NGBF said NSCN (Khango group) accepted the conditions set forth by the Centre and acceptance letter was handed over to the GoI through NGBF in New Delhi for further discussion. In the light of the development, the NGBF has appealed to the Centre to promptly respond to the peace offer and resume talks as soon as possible. The federation also appealed to all the Naga political groups to unite and join the peace process for early solution.

CM calls on Sumis to be warriors of unity Dimapur, NOV 14: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio Wednesday called upon the Sumi community to be warriors of unity, peace, reconciliation and all-round development and play a leading role in bringing permanent peace. Addressing the Ahuna cum Mini Hornbill Festival at Zunheboto, Rio acknowledged that Sumi warriors were known for their bravery and recalled that in his earlier tenure as chief minister, he had named Zunheboto as the ‘Land of Warriors’. “You are special, you are hardworking. The story of the Sema Naga Labour Corps 1917-18 is known to all Nagas. Out of about 2000 Labour Corps, about half of that were Sumis. This means you are warriors, adventurous and hard working,” Rio said and appreciated the contributions of the Sumis to the Naga society. According to him, the meaning of Ahuna as displayed by various cultural troupes indicated that it was a post harvest festival, which signified that “our forefathers were hard-working, worked hard throughout the year and celebrated the festival”. So, it was a reminder to the present generation

Neiphiu Rio

that one had to work to eat, he added. He reminded the people that Centre has already recognized Naga history as unique and the Naga issue was a political issue which needed political settlement. He called upon the people to ensure that the rich cultural heritage, traditions etc. are not only preserved but promoted so that the younger generations do not lose touch with history. Keeping these in mind, he said the PDA government decided to hold mini Hornbills in the districts coinciding with the respective tribal festivals so that true meaning can be brought to the phrase ‘Nagaland – Land of Festivals’. Stating that he was happy to learn that there were different species of butterflies found in Zunhe-

boto district, Rio urged the people to conserve them so that the district could become a tourist destination. Calling for preservation of the environment to check climate change, Rio stated that the state government decided to ban the use of ‘Single Use Plastics’. With regard to the request of Sumi Hoho for a multipurpose indoor stadium at Zunheboto, Rio assured to construct the stadium and called for collective effort of Zunheboto’s Sumi legislators and the people. Earlier, greetings were conveyed agriculture and cooperation minister G Kaito Aye, who also welcomed all the dignitaries present at the festival. Others who spoke at the function included Toniho Yeptho, president Nagaland Tribes Council; Zheshito Swu, president Western Sumi Hoho while the vote of thanks was delivered by Shanawaz C, IAS, DC Zunheboto. The significance of Ahuna was explained by Ghovito Jimo, president, Sumi Kukami Hoho. Rio was accompanied by host of legislators and officials. to be held in New Delhi from January 12 to 24, 2019. In this regard, he asked ANCSU office-bearers to approach the State government for sending a contingent representing Nagaland, even as he assured all necessary support. Dwelling on the importance of sports, the PWD minister mentioned, “Sports has no language and unites people. It breaks down walls brought about by politics and other divisive forces.” He advocated fair play and urged the students to compete hard, but fairly. Naga Students’ Federation general secretary Imtiyapang Imsong, who also spoke on the occasion, lamented that despite being blessed with talents and capabilities, Naga youth had failed to capitalise on these strengths to make successful careers. PAC, BAN condemn abduction of sales girl

DIMAPUR, NOV 14 (NPN): Public Action Committee (PAC) of Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) and Business Association of Nagas (BAN) have strongly condemned the abduction of a Naga sales girl of a pharmacy at East Dimapur by suspected NSCN (I-M) cadres for ransom on November 9. In a statement, PAC convener Vek(Cont’d on p-8) hosayi Nyekha and PAC co-convener and NCD vice president K Ghokheto Chophy said it was unbecoming of national workers to act in such a way towards a woman as Naga society had high respect for women and gave due recognition and protection to them. They said it was totally unexpected of a well-known Naga political group to treat “our women” in this way, and which should be condemned by every right-thinking citizen. Stating that it was aware of the organisations and student bodies within and outside the State collecting cash and other materials from shopkeepers, PAC asked them to stop such activities immediately. PAC also appealed to the police to be on the vigil as the festive season had “ M y v e g e t a b l e s a r e started, giving rise to criminal activities, organic but yours aren’t. especially targeting the shoppers and inSo move away don’t try nocent villagers who come to Dimapur to confuse buyers.” for marketing.

As PAC was formed under the aegis of NCD and comprised 19 tribal hohos, Naga Women Hoho Dimapur and other welfare bodies affiliated to it, the committee explained that everyone had shared responsibilities. Therefore, in case of necessity, any complaint in the interest of the society could be reported to the police or approach any PAC leader, the statement said. BAN: Business Association of Nagas also condemned the abduction of a salesgirl of a pharmacy in East Dimapur and the demand for ransom made to the Naga shop owner allegedly by cadres of NSCN (I-M). In a statement issued by its media cell, BAN said it was shameful that a Naga woman was meted such a treatment and that it should be condemned by one and all. According to BAN, businesses run by Nagas were already facing hardship due to prevailing syndicate system, having to come to terms with GST and the fierce competition posed by businesses run by (Cont’d on p-8) non-locals.
