11,160 appear NPSC exam for 62 posts KOHIMA, NOV 10 (NPN): Grappling with the lack of job opportunity in the state, 11,160 candidates appeared for the Nagaland Public Service commission (NPSC) preliminary exams 2018 for just 62 posts at 24 exam centres across the state. Talking to Nagaland Post, NPSC chairman, T.S. Angami informed that out of 12,867 applicants, 11,160 appeared for the exam while 1707 candidates were absent.The exams are being held to fill in the post of EAC- 15, Employment Officer- 1, APRO- 1, Excise Inspector- 4, Sect. Asst.- 40 and Information Asst.-1. TS Angami said that 6029 candidates appeared for the exam at 12 centres in Kohima district, 4215 across eight centres in Dimapur, 497 in Mokokchung at two centres, 256 in Tuensang centre and 163 in Mon centre. D I M A P U R , N OV 1 0 (NPN): With the ever increasing population and urbanization, Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, is currently grappling with mounting problems of garbage and the waste management has emerged as a huge challenge. Many cleanliness campaigns and cleanliness drives are conducted regularly, but things seem to go back to square thereafter. Disposal of waste in an environmentally sound manner minimises the adverse impact on the environment. However, addressing the problem immediately appears somewhat unlikely due to lack of cooperation from different sections of the society. Certain areas in Dimapur such as railway station area, Golaghat road and the road leading to Signal Bosti are no strangers to the odour of garbage piles. A total of approximately 96 colonies (Recognized and unrecognized) in Dimapur are looked after by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). According to DMC

administrator, Moa Sangtam, the civic body churns out about 100 metric tonnes of garbage every day. He said DMC has 14 trucks and two back-hoes that collect the garbage around Dimapur on alternate days for a certain fee. Under the Swachh Bharat campaign, he said DMC had also distributed two waste bins each to residents of Dimapur, one for dry waste and the other for wet wastes. However, he said these ideas have not been implemented well
and residents have failed to segregate their dry and wet wastes. Shopkeepers in the vicinity of the garbage pile below the fly-over told this reporter that the wastes mostly originate from nearby stalls (Dhabas) and sometimes dumped wastes are left there unattended for days. NEW DELHI, NOV 10 (PTI): The Election Commission Saturday initiated the process of finding an alternative to Mizoram chief electoral officer who is facing a massive agitation for his ouster by a conglomerate of civil society and student organisations. A Commission spokesperson said that in a meeting held here Saturday, the poll panel has “only decided to call for a panel of names for the post of State CEO from chief secretary of Mizoram.” The spokesperson said “next steps” will “only be taken after receiving the report of the team led by Deputy Election Commissioner Sudip Jain”. State chief electoral officer S B Shashank had reportedly sought deployment of additional central armed police forces (CAPF) in the state and complained to the EC that the state’s former principal secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo was interfering with the poll process. Chuaungo, a native of Mizoram and a Gujarat-cadre IAS officer was relieved of his duties earlier this month. The NGO Coordination Com-
mittee - a conglomerate of civil societies and student organisations - along with other political leaders, had been demanding Shashank’s exit from the state since then. The NGO also demanded that 11,232 Bru voters lodged in six Tripura relief camps be allowed to exercise their franchise at their respective polling stations in Mizoram and not in Tripura as committed by the poll panel in 2014. Meanwhile in Mizoram, the visiting Election Commission team led by Jain, has left for New Delhi on Saturday after holding talks with the stakeholders in view of the demands for removal of Mizoram Chief Election Officer Shashank, officials said. The team would submit its report to the Election Commission, they said. The EC team met the NGO Coordination Committee, church leaders, IAS Association leaders and visited the Myanmar border at Champhai in Mizoram before leaving for Delhi, they said. This was the second EC team to visit the state to find a solution to the situation arising out of the demand for the removal of the CEO.

The survey has predicted that the Congress may return to power in Madhya Pradesh after a gap of 15 years on the back of 42.3 per cent vote share. The projections gave BJP 107 seats, down from 166, and a simple majority of 116 seats to the Congress. Polls in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana will be held between November 12 and December 7. Counting of votes will be taken up together in all the
five states on December 11. The survey has also projected a clear majority of 64 seats to the CongressTDP combine in Telangana. The Congress has decided to contest 94 seats in Telangana, sources in Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee said on Thursday. The TDP (Telangana) will contest on 14 seats, while the Telangana Jana Samiti has been offered eight seats and CPI three seats. The opinion poll did
not give a clear majority to any party in Mizoram, with the Mizo National Front projected to lead with 17 seats, followed by the Congress with 12 seats and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) with nine seats. Predicting a close contest in Chhattisgarh, C-Voter poll survey gave 41 seats to the Congress with a 42.2 per cent vote share, while BJP is projected to get a slightly lower 41.6 per cent vote share and 43 seats. Saying that the survey results were “heartening and interesting”, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the party was going to win in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and also in Telangana in a resounding manner. “We hope to cross the two-thirds mark in Rajasthan and hope to get close to 140 seats in Madhya Pradesh and over 50-mark in Chhattisgarh.
D I M A P U R , N OV 1 0 (NPN): A state funeral was accorded to late K Yamakam, former minister and four-time MLA, at his private residence, Purana Bazaar in Dimapur on Saturday. Late Yamakam, father of advisor, SCERT, IPR and Village Guards, Toshi Wongtung, passed away at a private hospital on Friday after a brief illness. Speaking at the funeral service, veteran politician and former governor Dr. SC Jamir described late Yamakam as a man of strong conviction and trustworthy friend and colleague, who tirelessly worked for the uplift of Tuensang area. State chief minister Neiphiu Rio paid his tribute at the airport. In his message, Rio described late leader as a simple and down to earth leader, a man of integrity and commitment, known for relentlessly raising the voice of the people he represented.

Speaking on the occasion, jubilee organizing committee convenor, Khriehuzo Lohe stated that tremendous changes had taken place in the 50 year span. The Youth Ministry had started as a fellowship with only a few people who came to Kohima to pursue higher education. It was in the year 1968 that the Christian Youth Endeavour (CYE) was officially formed, Lohe stated. NFR introduces ‘Fog Pass’ device Guwahati, Nov 10 (IANS): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced a portable device called the Fog Pass in trains that will help drivers’ visibility during the foggy winter months, an NFR spokesman said on Saturday NFR chief spokesman Pranav Jyoti Sharma said that the device is a low-cost, Global Positioning System (GPS) based equipment to be used when visibility reduces and running trains at permissible speed becomes risky. “The device is an audio-visual navigation assistant in essence and displays the name and distance of approaching signals and other critical landmarks on track like Level Crossing Gates,” Sharma said. “It also provides voice guidance on real-time basis.” According to the spokesman, the device was not a permanent fixture but can be carried by drivers whenever required. “It weighs less than 1.5 kg and operates on rechargeable Li-ion batteries which can run the device for 18 hours without recharging,” he said, adding that a total of 1,101 Fog Pass devices have been introduced in the NFR.
Two injured in grenade explosion Guwahati, Nov 10 (PTI): Two persons have been injured when a grenade of the BSF exploded in Assam’s Morigaon district Saturday, police said. The BSF personnel on NRC duty near Jhargaon area had lost a grenade yesterday which was found by the two this evening, the police said. The grenade had been issued to a BSF constable of BSF F/98 batallion, the police said. One of the two men picked up the grenade and removed its safety pin with the help of pliers and it exploded. The explosion dealt him and another person minor injuries. The two were rushed to a nearby hospital and they were released after being adminsitered first aid. The remnants of the grenade were seized and the BSF authorities were informed.

Agartala, Nov 10 (PTI): Tripura government will soon start dialogue for purchase of 26 per cent equity shares of the Palatana gas thermal power project from the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS). The 726.6 mw gas based power project, run by ONGC Tripura Power Company, was formally started in 2014 as a joint venture of the ONGC, the IDFC, the IL&FS and the Tripura government. “The state of Tripura owns 0.5 per cent share in the project. We have come to know that the IL&FS will offload its entire 26 per cent share. We are in the process of opening dialogue with them to buy all the shares,” said Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The ministry of power allocated over 58 per cent energy from the Palatana project to north eastern states. Out of Tripuras share in the projects output, the state government is selling 160 mw on a daily basis to neighbouring Bangladesh. The IL&FS purchased 26 per cent equity shares at Rs 291.20 crore. With increase in value, the equity shares are now estimated at Rs 300 crores.
Jorhat, Nov 10 (PTI): All the 15 newborn babies who died at a government hospital in Assam over the past few days were “critically ill and had no chance of survival”, a hospital spokesperson said Saturday. The mothers of all the deceased were ‘unbooked’ -- that is they had no medical records of their pregnancy, said Nilutpal Bhattacharjee, the public relations officer of the Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH), where the deaths were reported from November 1-6. The number of babies admitted to the hospital’s special care newborn unit (SCNU) was almost double its usual number at that time and the number of deaths was also proportionately high in tandem with increased admissions, the PRO said. Itanagar, Nov 10 (PTI): A new species of freshwater crab has been found at the Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh, the renowned science journal ‘Zootaxa’ said. A three-member team of scientists of the Zoological Survey India (ZSI) spotted the species ‘Teretamon kem-pi’ in the park in Changlang district in April this year, a research paper of the journal said. The crab, generally resides under burrows in rocks or boulders or in streams, has a round-shape carapace and measures around 1.5 inches in size. The team collected a specimen of the brown colour species from the primary forests at an elevation of 375-657 meters above sea level. Currently, there are 1,000 species of marine crabs and 120 species of freshwater crabs in the country. In north eastern region, there are 45 species of freshwater crabs with Arunachal Pradesh having 10 alone, the paper said.

Barman clarified that the deaths were not due to doctors’ negligence and the JMCH had no infrastructure deficiency as patient doctor ratio was “fine” with equipment. In JMCH, 8,000 babies were born and, in that rate, there should be 32 numbers of beds. But, there is 41 beds in the neonatal care unit which is as per as the Medical Council of India norms, he said. “But, during the first week of November the patient rate suddenly increased and, as per the patients rate, the death rate is balanced when we compare with the death rate in the hospital during 2017,” he added.

IMPHAL, Nov 10: Miscreants partially damaged an SBI ATM machine in Manipur’s Bishnupur district in the wee hours of November 8. However, the money in the machine was safe, according to police and bank officials. The ATM booth installed near Bethel School at Nambol Bazar under Nambol police station of Bishnupur district was found damaged and defunct when it was opened Saturday morning. The ATM booth was not opened on Friday because of Ningol Chakkouba festival. As the ATM booth was damaged and experts of the SBI in Imphal were not in a position to repair, police sealed the ATM booth in the presence of the SBI authority for investigation. Chennai, Nov 10 (PTI): Tamil Nadu political parties, including the main opposition DMK Saturday termed the dissolution of the Sri Lankan Parliament as “murder of democracy”. They also sought the Central government’s intervention to ensure that the security of India and the welfare of the Tamil people in the island nation are protected. DMK chief M K Stalin said the dissolution of parliament was “trampling of the Constitution” and “atrocious” since the Sri Lankan constitution says that only a resolution by two thirds of its members can pave the way to dissolve the House within four and a half years of its convening. The leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, dubbed the move as a political emergency that threatened stability and jeopardised the welfare of Tamils. Urging the Centre to condemn the “murder of democracy”, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader said the Union government must take steps to ensure a dignified life for Tamils with peace and security.

Lormi, Nov 10 (PTI): Raking up the Ram temple issue, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Saturday sought to know whether the Congress was concerned about Lord Ram or Mughal emperor Babur. Addressing a poll rally here in Chhattisgarh on the last day of campaigning for the first phase of the state polls, he alleged that the Congress toyed with national security and actively and covertly supported Naxalism in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand for political gains. Despite having extensive mineral deposits and forest wealth, Chhattisgarh remained “poor, backward and a BIMARU state” during the Congress rule, he said. BIMARU - an acronym formed from the first letters of the names of the states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh - was
coined in the mid-1980s to refer to the poor economic conditions within those states. “Today, the forest wealth is being used for the welfare of locals. The adivasis (tribals) and forest dwellers are being given benefits of development schemes,” the priest-turnedpolitician said. “The Congress encouraged Naxalism for its gains, but when it (Naxalism) became dangerous for the security of people, it was the BJP which had to deal with the issue sternly. The Congress has been encouraging Naxalism actively and covertly,” he alleged. “The Congress, for its own gains, played with the security of the country. Be it Chhattisgarh or Jharkhand, where the issue was giving asylum to Naxalites or using states like Kashmir for political benefits. But for the BJP, national security is of prime importance, hence (it) never accepted toying with it,” Adityanath said. 100 cases filed for flouting SC order on firecrackers Mumbai, Nov 10 (PTI): Over 100 cases were registered in Mumbai for violation of the Supreme Court order on setting off firecrackers during Diwali, police said Saturday. The SC had last month permitted sale and manufacture of low emission “green” firecrackers countrywide and fixed a two-hour time period (8pm-10pm) for bursting them on Diwali and other festivals. The state home department had asked the police to implement the SC directive on firecrackers and ensure action against those violating the deadline. More than 100 cases were registered in various parts of the metropolis against people who burst firecrackers after the 10 pm deadline, the police added. Also, 53 cases were registered at various police stations against firecracker sellers for violating safety guidelines, a spokesperson of the Mumbai Police said. In the first case related to violation of the SC-fixed deadline Wednesday, the Trombay police had arrested two persons for allegedly bursting firecrackers at midnight, a police official said.

The big cat, officially known as T1, was shot dead in an operation in a forest in Yavatmal district on November 2, leading to outrage among animal lovers and wildlife organisations who accused the state government of violating norms. The state government Friday constituted a fourmember committee, comprising wildlife experts and officials, for an “in-depth” probe into the killing of the tigress. Senior BJP leader and state Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said the state government is willing to form another panel under Thackeray’s leadership, if he so desires. Bengaluru, Nov 10 (PTI): Protests by BJP and right-wing outfits broke out in several parts of Karnataka on Saturday against ‘Tipu Jayanthi’ celebrations, which were held amid tight security, while Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and his deputy skipped the main event here, drawing disapproval from ruling Congress lawmakers. The previous Congress government led by Siddaramaiah began celebrating the birth anniversary of controversial 18th century Mysore kingdom ruler Tipu Sultan on November 10 every year since 2015, amid

New Delhi, Nov 10 (IANS): With no improvement in the air quality of Delhi-NCR even three days after Diwali, the environment authority on Saturday extended the ban on the entry of trucks, construction and polluting industries. The Supreme Courtappointed Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) on Saturday ordered the Delhi government to extend the ban which was imposed on November 2. The restrictions imposed till November 10 were extended to November 12, by when there will be an improvement in the air quality of Delhi-NCR, as forecast by pollution monitoring agencies. The restrictions were imposed by the EPCA under
the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Delhi’s air quality started deteriorating a day after Diwali to “severe-plus” or “emergency” due to fireworks and weather conditions like wind speed and dipping mercury, leading to lower dispersion rate of pollutants. The Air Quality Index (AQI) on Saturday was 401 or “severe”. “The CPCB-headed task force has informed EPCA that given the prevailing adverse conditions, the following measures will remain until November 12, when it will further review the situation and inform us,” said EPCA Chairman Bhure Lal, in a letter to Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash, the Delhi Environment Secretary and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee.

Bengaluru, Nov 10 (PTI): After remaining elusive for three days, former Karnataka minister and mining baron G Janardhana Reddy Saturday appeared before the police here in connection with an alleged ponzi scam, and denied the allegations as a “political conspiracy”. Reddy, who the police said had been absconding, came in a car to the Central Crime Branch office, along with his advocates, after releasing a video message from an unknown location, saying he would appear before it. After arriving at the office, Reddy claimed that there was a “political conspiracy” and added that he had faith in the police. In his video message, he said he was not absconding and was very much in the city, while asserting that there was no need for him to flee. “I have not committed anything wrong. The police do not have a single

Jammu, Nov 10 (PTI): An Army soldier was killed Saturday in sniper fire by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said. The spokesman identified the soldier as rifleman Varun Kattal (21), a resident of Mawa-Rajpura area of Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. He is survived by his parents, father Anchal Singh and mother Pinki Rani. This was the second sniper attack along the LoC in two days. An Army porter lost his life in a similar attack in Akhnoor sector of Jammu Friday. “At about 0945 hours, unprovoked ceasefire violation was initiated by Pakistan in Sunderbani sector in which one Army soldier was shot by a sniper from across the border and
later succumbed to injuries at 11.10 AM,” the spokesman said. “Rifleman Kattal was a brave and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” the spokesman said adding his martyrdom will not go in vain. He said the Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively on Pakistan army posts. On October 21, three soldiers of Jammu and Kashmir light infantry regiment and two heavilyarmed infiltrators, believed to be members of the Border Action Team (BAT) of the Pakistan army, and terrorists, were killed in Sunderbani sector. When I stop telling God what I want, He can freely work His will in me without any hindrance. He can crush me, exalt me, or do anything else He chooses. ith ever rising number of consumers, packed food items have also shown phenomenal rise though all’s not hunky dory. The Food and Safety Standards Authority of India(FSSAI) Nagaland branch has recently come out with an awareness about detection of adulterated food items in the market. Many items such as milk, ghee, butter, chilly powder, pepper, turmeric etc which are consumed everyday, are adulterated by criminals who have no qualms about the lives of innocent consumers. It is time that state health authorities dealing with food items review their performance and take stock of the developments taking place outside the state where NGOs and government authorities are focused in determining the kinds of food items being sold. When such cases are taken up, those firms with financial resources hire the best legal team to take on the scientific arguments put forward by health authorities. It is also known that most fast food items do not contain any nutrients that are beneficial to the human body. In most cases, these foods are filled with harmful carbohydrates, fats and cholesterol and as a result, consuming junk food reduces level of essential nutrients thereby causing weakness in the body. Adulterants in many food items are harmful and which can be detected through use of simple kits. For instance, as pointed out by FSSAI, the most commonly consumed items such as milk, chilly power etc are found to be adulterated. For example, milk is found to be commonly adulterated with either detergent powder or starch to give it a white look and create foam. The other item is chilly powder which is commonly adulterated with powdered red bricks; silver leaves used in sweets are replaced with very thin aluminum foils or lead chromate in turmeric powder, saw dust and powdered bran in powdered spices and the list is seemingly endless. It is one thing to create awareness and another thing to expect consumers become inspectors overnight by using some kits available in the market. It is time that health authorities take up the issue in earnestness since so many dubious substances are sold as genuine food items including expired food items. In addition, junk foods have been identified as a major cause of heart diseases including myocardial infraction, cardiac arrest and atherosclerosis. This is due to the fact that junk food contains excessive amount of low-density lipoproteins and cholesterol that get deposited on the inner linings of blood vessels. Merely resting on the premise the avoiding junk food will guarantee good health is untrue since it is also a fact that most lentils, cereals and vegetables in the market are also laced with harmful substances, some of which are poisonous. Even pigs are fed with hormones and chemicals for fast growth and these are harmful if consumed. Also the so-called bottled “mineral water” are filtered well or groundwater and may even contain chemicals that could be harmful to the body. The amount of sub-standard or adulterated food items being freely sold in the market is of great concern. Inspection and enforcement are the need of the hour but they can only be meaningful if this is done consistently and those violating the act should not be allowed to go unpunished.

ecularism should not mean the death of true religiosity; instead, a truly religious mind strengthens positive and enabling secularism - the spirit of plurality and inclusiveness, the principle of non-discrimination, and the dignity to every soul, irrespective of birth and location. With the loud assertion of Hindutva — a totalitarian doctrine that negates the inherent plurality in the broad landscape of Hinduism, and transforms it into an instrument of emotive mobilisation for strengthening militant nationalism — many of us experience the death of life-affirming religiosity: love and connectedness, and sublime prayers and a quest for the ocean of compassion. Instead, we begin to breathe violence. An epic like the Ramayana with subtle meanings relating to love and sacrifice, sattvic calmness and demonic aggression, and masculine pride and feminine resistance is reduced into narrow/ egotistic politics; and a temple is no longer a site of meditative communion with the divine; instead, it ought to satisfy the narcissistic will of a brigade of politicians and ‘sadhus’ engaged in an act of historic revenge: giving the appropriate lesson to the ‘alien invaders’. No wonder, the language they use becomes terribly violent. The Supreme Court is seen to be ‘anti-temple’; and as the Prime Minister has already been regarded as the ‘incarnation of Lord Rama’, Hindus, we are told, are losing their patience, and the temple at the disputed site has to be constructed at any cost. This crowd mentality (think of Amit Shah’s fiery speech in Kerala) is the brute assertion of power that does not mind to defy even the sanctity of the Supreme Court. This is really frightening. There are three reasons why we ought to resist the politics of Hindutva. 1. It is inherently antidemocratic because it is based on the principle of exclusion. Enough has already been said about ideologues like Golwalkar and Savarkar — the way they saw the Muslims and Christians as ‘alien intruders’, and in this act of othering, there was no possibility of what Tagore with his poetic wisdom imagined — India as an ocean, a confluence of multiple traditions, faiths and

religions. Not solely that. Like any other fundamentalist doctrine, it excludes even those ‘Hindus’ who think differently and believe in pluralism and constant crossreligious conversation. In fact, we cannot make sense of the assassination of Gandhi without understanding the practice of violence and exclusion implicit in Hindutva. 2. Its social conservatism, despite its close affinity with the neoliberal market economy, goes against the voices of the marginalised: lower castes and women. As a matter of fact, its patriarchal/hyper-masculine/ hierarchical character cannot be evaded even when it speaks of the integration of the marginalised into its own fold. 3. It transforms religion into despiritualised crowd behaviour. A meditative/reflexive mind striving for a meaning of existence with its rhythm of life and death is not what it wants. Instead, to be a ‘Hindu’, for them, means to wear a uniform, hate others and equate nationalism with a singular belief. Even when it speaks of ‘sadhus’ and ‘gurus’ (or mahants, priests and television-induced celebrity babas), its primary intention is not to elevate man, as Sri Aurobindo imagined, to a higher level of psychic/spiritual evolution; it demands conformity and gross emotions. Well, this does not mean that there be a soulless secularism, or some sort of scientism with its inherent disenchantment. Instead, Nachiketa’s quest for understanding the meaning of death (as the Katha Upanishad depicts so beautifully), Buddha’s reflections on dukkha or suffering emanating from our attachment to all that is temporal, and the ecstasy of love that the likes of Nanak and Kabir radiated, enable us to live differently, meaningfully and peacefully. Gandhi and Tagore were striving for this possibility: something qualitatively different from the doctrine of assertive Hindutva, or, for that matter, any
other form of fundamentalism, be it Islamic or Christian. Gandhi didn’t escape from religion. As a matter of fact, as he chose to transform the political realm into the field of his sadhana, he added yet another meaning to secularism. Cross-religious dialogue, constant experiments with truth, resisting all sorts of communalism, and seeking to spiritualise politics through satyagraha and nishkam karma: these principles made him strive for an inclusive idea of India — so different from the ‘two-nation theory’ propagated by the likes of Savarkar and Jinnah. Likewise, Tagore’s religiosity was a quest for the ‘surplus’ of man — an aesthetic connectedness with nature as a manifestation of the divine, and seeing the light of the infinite in the finite. No wonder, his politically and spiritually mediated essays on nationalism continually reminded us of the devastating consequences of a totalitarian ideology, a doctrine that sanctifies the machinery called the ‘nation’, promotes group narcissism and violence, and diminishes the spirit of human creativity. It is sad that we have lost our priorities. See the degeneration of the public debate. The nation, a loud television anchor announces, wants to know the gotra of Rahul Gandhi to examine whether he is truly a Hindu. Or think of the politics of appropriation: from the record-breaking ‘Statue of Unity’ to the rhetoric that ‘Vivekananda, Subhas Bose, Bhagat Singh and Ambedkar — they belong to us’. Yet, we continue to see street children in the national capital begging; we see women being violated every day; we see schools without teachers; we see the erosion of the legitimacy of all major institutions — from the RBI to the CBI; and we see the proximity of the ruling regime with the not-so pious corporate bourgeoisie. And under these circumstances, the proponents of Hindutva tell us that the construction of the Ram temple at Ayodhya ought to be the first priority of the nation. What do we do? Do we laugh at this absurdity? Or do we cry for this degeneration: the death of emancipatory religiosity from the dominant political discourse? Avijit Pathak
ne of my earliest memories is of visiting that unforgettable journey to Northern India at my youthful days. The tour had been designed to a religious event to the so-called temple run. Late 70s, we ten families of NF Railway found bucket list experiences of a life time. It was beyond doubt a quintessential occurrence over day and night journey on a reserved coach. Sooner we joined a big family living together for 30 days on wheel. The list of endless temple run was incredibly longer from Gaya to Prayag, Sarnath, Ayodhya, Mathura, Vrindavan, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Amritsar, Dwaraka and Puri. Being Guwahatian which brought ten temples (Kamakhya, Bhuvaneswari, Basistha Ashram, Hayagriba Madhaba, Ugro Tara, Aswaklanta, Umananda, Navagraha, Janardana, Vishwakarma, Purb Balaji) into being I was not very mesmerised for those ten temples one after another. Young people don’t like it. I don’t either. I keenly noticed those landscapes instead of visiting shrine. The effect of hiss-hiss train journey had begun and the landscape slowly appeared a different look. But my parents and other senior co-passengers had shown supreme faith. I watched lines of vendors selling foodstuff with enthuse at the station. Tanga ride was most fun and frolic on those days. Waste piles up in every household area. The walls are artistically pasted by cow dung. They are the fuel for Chulha. I was about to tap an idol praying at Padmashan. It was living Saint at dhyan beneath sacred Bodhi tree, where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment. I was not convinced the confluence of three rivers at Triveni Sangam but I liked the floating coconut as swimmers got a fast forward and rewind for another prayer there. We felt the presence of Lord Krishna in every corners of Mathura. High priest professionalism did discomfort at Varanasi. The priest catered yet more prayers for visitors. They were incredibly user friendly at concessional offer too. The water of the stream at Rishikesh was in pure form and fishes were floating plenty. The etiquette of sitting and eating at Guru-Ka-Langar at Amritsar was great learning situation. The birds were catching nuts and biscuits while travel by sea to Bet-Dwarka. We left stranded at Jagannath. Hurrah! The bath at Puri beach gave us with great fanfare. The Camera man took shots and promised to return in the evening. Yes, Odia people are named to be honest and he returned with those memorable photos. India is home to all religions. We see politician affirm one’s faith on particular religion openly in public domain? Mixing of religion with politics is certainly unrespectable for many. More than USD 1 Trillion of Gold was held by temples in India. Still, the temples have an aura of mys-
tery over India’s vast hidden wealth. Over the decades, devotees have made generous offerings when their special prayers were answered. Padmanabhaswamy, Lord Venkateswara at Tirupati, Siddhivinayak, Shirdi Sai Baba are the leading Rich Gods living with poor people in the era of commercialised religion in India. A huge amount is invested on festivities and idols instead of spending for people in need. The successive governments failed to improve the lives of the Indian masses. The Government go subsidies spiritual tourism nowadays. Should temple gold go to nation-building and strengthening the economy? The government now followed up on the Supreme Court order of 2012, which dictated that the subsidy should be phased out in 10 years. Money for the subsidy believed to total Rs 450 crore at present – would be better spent on the education. It was not just the Haj alone. They are Kumbh Melas in Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik and Ujjain. The government including various srates Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand also spend money on Mansarovar Yatra on security and health facilities for the pilgrims. Meanwhile Assam and Madhya Pradesh send senior citizens for Pilgrimage under the Punya Dham Yatra and Mukhyamantri Tirtha Darshan Yojana respectively. Ours was the fun on the travel. While I start to draw those memories today, I found diversion of religious thinking. Suddenly the sagas of temple run by politicians have begun. They made us believe on it. There is a cacophony of such conflicting issues around, which must be set in a sensible context. They all are interested such misadventures steps and are going behind records. However the Apex Court is doing its best. Sadguru once asked to answer. If god does not necessarily exist, why do we need Gurus? He answered it shrewdly. Devotees are in unfamiliar terrain. Like GPS, it is sensible to take instruction from Gurus. GPS means Guru Positioning System. Undeniably, they are funny indeed. Citizens don’t understand what all the fuss is about happening around. 2019 must be on the doorstep. All of a sudden, the list of renaming of cities appeared. The clamour of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya grows bigger. Even leaders fall prey to the Gotra (clan) to woo voters. They are incredibly excited. Are those celebrations all about hankering after power or a true patriot? Despite India’s fast growing economy in the world, millions still remain poor. That is a Billion-dollar question. 12 weeks a baby can smile, suck their thumb and can make a fist. 3000 years ago God spoke through King David (Psalm 139:13-16) “ For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance( strength), yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance (perpetually) were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them”. 1607 abortions, in 2014-15 there were 2096 abortions and in 2015-16 there were 3152 abortions. In another newspaper report a leading gynecologist reported there were 20 to 30 abortions daily performed in Kohima alone (estimated that is 10,950 in one year). Maybe there could be some legitimate reasons in some cases although killing is killing. However the numbers of abortions are staggering and shocking. And the next question is , what do the clinics do with the bodies of the babies ?
The Planned Parenthood (pro-abortion body) in USA were caught selling body parts to pharmaceuticals and to the cosmetic industry. That is how horrible humans can become with their conscience seared. Why are our churches so quiet on this issue? Why don’t we protest at abortion clinics? It may be such a shameful thing for the family to have a pregnant girl who is not married. But it is so wrong to encourage a daughter or sister to have an abortion just to keep “inconvenience” out of the way. Society may not know you killed a child but God does. Abortion kills a child, cancels a father, cripples a mother, and corrupts a nation. The said gynaecologist in the news report said that more pregnancies occur at the time of the Hornbill Festival. It is frightening that the Rio Government which instituted the Festival season wants to now have mini Hornbill at every district. Who will consider the gravity of the lives that will be ruined, money spent for a festival that has hardly any value to be gained. God wiped out some nations in the past because of their devilish religious practices. They sacrificed their children to their god Moloch by throwing them in the fire. Abortion is the most
brutal form of child abuse that exist. The way babies in the womb are murdered is horrible. Whether the baby is sucked out violently or burned with a salt solution or cut in pieces or a girl swallows a pill which induces a lot of bleeding, all are violating the laws of God. But we still confess to be a Christian? God makes a life and gives life. We have no right to take it away. If a man makes a girl pregnant he should be equally responsible for the action, married or not. A girl that did get pregnant needs to take responsibility, trust God for the outcome of what will happen to her baby that she is now respon-
sible for. God’s way is the right way. He will take care of His own. It is a child that can inherit eternal life. Importance of mother tongue

There are many instances of children not being able to converse in their mother tongue even though they have been brought up in Nagaland. Not being able to speak mother tongue should not be seen as an achievement but rather a big shame for the parents of these children. Children will eventually learn to speak English, Hindi or any other language when he/she attends school. When it comes to one’s own mother tongue it is the duty of the parents to ensure that children are encouraged to speak and read the mother tongue. Amaravati (AP), Nov 10 (PTI): The Andhra Pradesh state cabinet will be expanded on Sunday with the inclusion of two new members, filling the vacancies caused by the resignation of two BJP members in March, TDP sources said Saturday. Senior legislator N Mohammed Farooq, who is currently the chairman of the state legislative council, would be inducted into the Chandrababu Naidu cabinet along with Kidari Sravan Kumar, son of slain MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao, party sources said. The two are being inducted into the Cabinet under the minority and the tribal quota as the two communities did not have any representation so far, they said. Governor E S L Narasimhan would administer the oath of office and secrecy to the two new ministers at 11.45 am on Sunday at the Grievance Hall in Undavalli. Farooq served as a minister earlier in the cabinets of Telugu Desam Party founder N T Rama Rao and, later, Naidu. He had also served as a deputy speaker of a united Andhra Pradesh assembly, but lost all the elections since 2004. He was nominated to the Council in July 2017 and made its chairman in November. Five days short of a year in office, Farooq resigned from the Council chairman post on Saturday afternoon, ahead of his induction into the Cabinet. Sravan, an engineering graduate, will be making his political debut after his father was killed by Maoists in Araku area recently. New Delhi, Nov 10 (PTI): Bharti Airtel on Saturday said it will pre-pay USD 1.5 billion debt with its subsidiary Bharti Airtel International (Netherlands), using the proceeds it got from six global entities investing in its Africa unit. Bharti Airtel International (Netherlands) B V commenced cash purchase of USD 1.5 billion, 5.125 per cent Guaranteed Senior Notes which were due in 2023, Bharti Airtel said in a regulatory filing. This offer, it said, has been made with a view to “proactively manage its capital structure, reduce gross debt and leverage by acquiring the Notes funded out of equity proceeds and also provide liquidity to Noteholders at a premium to the market.” Bharti Airtel group continues to deleverage and pursue its strategies towards that end, it added. “In line with this, it has been actively exploring various equity driven initiatives, including those previously announced regarding its Africa business, so as to proactively manage its balance sheet and capital structure to align them to the group’s core conservative philosophy,” it said. MUMBAI, Nov 10 (PTI): The Reserve Bank of India on Friday cancelled the certificate of registrations of as many as 31 non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) for unspecified reasons. It also cancelled the certificate of registrations of 17 NBFCs following a request by them for the same. The action comes amid difficulties faced by the NBFCs sector. A majority 27 of the 31 companies which lost their licences are from Bengal,the central bank said in a statement. Silver too lost Rs 400 at Rs 38,000 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said gold prices took a hit owing to considerable fall in demand from local jewellers coupled with a weak trend overseas as the firmer dollar eroded appeal of the precious metal as a safe haven investment. In the international market, gold ended lower at USD 1,210.40 an ounce and silver at USD 14.25 an ounce in New York on Friday. In the national capital gold of 99.9 per cent 99.5 per cent purity plunged by Rs 180 each to Rs 32,070 and Rs 31,920 per 10 grams, respectively. The precious metal had lost Rs 440 in the previous three days. Sovereign, however, remained unaltered at Rs 24,700 per piece of 8 gram in limited deals. In sync with gold, silver ready fell by Rs 400 to Rs 38,000 per kg and weekly-based delivery dropped by Rs 690 to Rs 36,880 per kg.

New Delhi, Nov 10 (PTI): Debt-laden Reliance Communications (RCom) has settled a case with markets regulator Sebi over non-compliance with listing norms, including alleged failure to promptly inform about interest payment default on debentures, according to an order. The company, part of the Anil Ambani group, also settled the issue of non-cooperation with the credit rating agencies and debenture tr ustee that were in violation of listing norms. In an order on Friday, Sebi said the case has been settled after payment of Rs 6.2 million towards settlement charges. “The proceedings that could have been initiated for the defaults... are settled qua the applicant,” the order said. It also noted that Sebi shall not initiate any enforcement action against the applicant. The order comes after RCom filed a suo-moto application with Sebi to settle the case. Under the settlement mechanism, an entity is allowed to settle charges by paying a penalty without admission or denial of guilt. Rio De Janeiro, Nov 10 (IANS): At least 11 people were killed in a shootout with police after a bank robbery in the northeast region of Brazil, authorities said on Friday. The shootout occurred on Thursday night after police located the house where the alleged bank robbers were hiding after robbing a bank in Aguas Belas in the state of Pernambuco. The group of robbers arrived at the bank in two vehicles according to witnesses and fired several shots as they fled through the city. The police launched a manhunt to track them down. “They were in a house. We told them they were under arrest and they began firing and we responded,” said Fabio Costa, the civil police commissioner. “There was an intense gun battle and the criminals were killed,” he said. ohn Mayer admitted he struggled with fame when he made it big in the 2000s. The 41-year-old addressed his controversial reputation to Billboard Friday where he described how he’s changed over the years. “Some people still say, ‘That guy’s a d---,’” said the musician. “And I go, ‘Well, any of that data you’re working off of is really old.’ I mean, I can tell you for sure that I haven’t been a d--- in many years. That’s a really outdated take.” Mayer went on to tell the music magazine that it’s “freeing” to be in a more mature place in his life now. “I probably had a run in my life where I wasn’t aware that there was anything I couldn’t have,” he said. “And it made a monster out of me.”

Many agree JK Rowling’s imagination is “as awe-inspiring as ever.” The second of five planned Fantastic Beasts films by JK Rowling also earns praise for its special effects. Gp Capt Sharad R Keskar, the principal of the school, who graced the opening ceremony as chief guest, declared the meet open. The opening ceremony witnessed a well synchronised march past followed by oath taking ceremony by the house captains. On the opening day, a 5000 mtr marathon run was conducted wherein cadets from the six senior houses participated. Cdt Roshan Kumar bagged the top spot with a timing of 17:04 minutes breaking the previous year record of Cdt Tapan Kodak (17:05 min-
utes). Cdt Tamar Mara and Cdt Sonu Kumar secured the second and third positions with timings of 21:02 minutes and 22:05 minutes respectively. D i m a p u r , N ov 1 0 (NPN): Officials from the departments of Youth Resources & Sports (YRS), Information & Public Relations (IPR) and Nagaland Football Association (NFA) visited Mohan Bagan Athletics Club and RG KAR Medical College, Kolkata on November 10. According to DIPR, the initiative is being carried out by the government of Nagaland as part of the yearlong celebrations honouring legendary footballer, Dr. T. Ao on his 100th Birth Anniversary. Interacting with the officials from Nagaland, the media officer of Mohan Bagan Club, Imran Khan said that the club was honoured and delighted to remember and emulate a legendary footballer like Dr. T. Ao under whose leadership and contributions, the club won various tournaments and gained fame and recognition across the country. He also said that most of the prominent football players during the early
50s and 60s were from MB Club and one such prominent player was Dr. T. Ao. Stressing on the importance of linkage, he strongly urged the people of north eastern states to develop a sense of cohesion and connectivity with the mainland India in order to develop oneness and live in as “unity in diversity”. As of now, “the link between the north eastern states and the other states of the country is missing” when it comes to oneness, he stated. He said that education and sports are the two most important factors to build connectivity, understanding and unity amongst the people of different regions. Therefore, he encouraged people from north eastern states to visit places and interact with fellow friends outside the state. He suggested NE states to make joint venture with the club and organise exchange programmes at the state or club level. Khan further said that
the north eastern people have been blessed with talent as such, he opined the importance of launching a professional football team in Nagaland and make the players competitive at par with other professional players. There is a proposal to name one of their buildings in honour of Dr. T. Ao however the proposal has to be further discussed, said Khan. Principal of RG KAR Medical College, Professor Dr. S. Batabyal said that the college was very fortunate to have a legendary footballer from Mohan Bagan Club who captained Indian Football Team London Olympics Games, in 1948. Dr. T. Ao has been an inspiration to many and his contributions particularly in football deserve honour and appreciation, said Batabyal. He further said that the college has started a annual football tournament in the name of Dr. T.Ao from last year.

Punish clubs breaching FFP: Klopp London, Nov 10 (Agencies): Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has urged UEFA to take action against any clubs found to be in breach of financial fair play (FFP). Manchester City have come under scrutiny after allegations were published in Der Spiegel claiming they had struck a secret deal with UEFA in 2014 to avoid a potential Champions League ban for breaching FFP regulations. Der Spiegel also claimed City owner Sheikh Mansour “supplemented” the club’s sponsorship deals in order to comply with UEFA’s FFP regulations. City labelled the

allegations as an “organised and clear” attempt to damage their reputation. Paris Saint-Germain were also accused by Der Spiegel of artificially inflating sponsorship revenues to comply with FFP. Klopp has yet to read Der Spiegel’s allegations but believes any club breaking the rules should
