The opinion poll, however, did not give a clear majority to any party in Mizoram or Chhattisgarh. women. Rijiju remarked that women play an important role in a society and that without them there can be no progress in any sector. With the inaugural of the Women police in the district, Rijiju was optimistic that law and order and crime against women would be contained. The minister also took the opportunity to commend the Nagaland IRB personnel, saying the police force of Nagaland is one of the best

police force in India and on high demand in other states. Impressed by the natural scenic beauty of Kiphire, Rijiju said the district had immense tourism potential. He wondered as to why Nagaland was focused only on Hornbill festival when the state could attract more tourists in places like Kiphire and other districts irrespective of any season. Rijiju also called upon state tourist police, yet to be setup, to assist and guide

the tourists during their visit to Nagaland. Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio took to tweeter and said: “The PDA government is committed to set up Women Police Stations in all districts, keeping in mind women safety and women empowerment.” Meanwhile, in his brief speech, deputy chief minister and in-charge of Home, Y. Patton declared to provide 150 tourist police personnel during Hornbill Festival. He also acknowledged minister of Soil and Water Conservation and Geology, Kashiho Sangtam for taking the initiative to include Kiphire as one of the ‘Aspritional Districts’. Patton therefore called upon the people to cooperate and work together with Kashiho to usher in development in the district. He also lauded chief minister Neiphiu Rio for making it possible to open the women police station in Kiphire. Rijiju was accompanied by chief minister, Neiphiu Rio; cabinet ministers, chief secretary, DGP and other officials.

Dimapur city grapples with mounting garbage problems Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , N OV 1 0 (NPN): With the ever increasing population and urbanization, Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, is currently grappling with mounting problems of garbage and the waste management has emerged as a huge challenge. Many cleanliness campaigns and cleanliness drives are conducted regularly, but things seem to go back to square thereafter. Disposal of waste in an environmentally sound manner minimises the adverse impact on the environment. However, addressing the problem immediately appears somewhat unlikely due to lack of cooperation from different sections of the society. Certain areas in Dimapur such as railway station area, Golaghat road and the road leading to Signal Bosti are no strangers to the odour of garbage piles. A total of approximately 96 colonies (Recognized and unrecognized) in Dimapur are looked after by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). According to DMC

administrator, Moa Sangtam, the civic body churns out about 100 metric tonnes of garbage every day. He said DMC has 14 trucks and two back-hoes that collect the garbage around Dimapur on alternate days for a certain fee. Under the Swachh Bharat campaign, he said DMC had also distributed two waste bins each to residents of Dimapur, one for dry waste and the other for wet wastes. However, he said these ideas have not been implemented well

and residents have failed to segregate their dry and wet wastes. Shopkeepers in the vicinity of the garbage pile below the fly-over told this reporter that the wastes mostly originate from nearby stalls (Dhabas) and sometimes dumped wastes are left there unattended for days. The garbage dump at Signal Road seemed to be the worst with a foul smell permeating the air that even motorists have to cover up their mouths when crossing the site. (Cont’d on p-7)

Opposition parties to meet on Nov EC seeks names for Mizoram CEO’s post Kiphire: Rijiju distributes machineries to farmers 22 as anti-BJP front gathers steam

is the national agenda, an utmost important agenda,” Naidu said. Naidu had recently met former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, his Karnataka counterpart H D Kumaraswamy and DMK president M.K. Stalin as part of his efforts to forge a front against the BJP. “Now I have convinced everybody. Everybody is willing to cooperate with us. “In this experiment, Congress is the main opposition party. They have more responsibility. We have to acknowledge that,” Naidu said. The meeting would decide on “how to move forward” and also “build an organisational structure” for the anti-BJP platform, he added. Naidu said he had already met several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah and others. Replying

to questions, he said there were only “two platforms” in the country BJP and anti-BJP. “Political parties should decide which side they are. If they don’t join us, it means they are with BJP,” he said. “The Tamil Nadu government is controlled by remote control (from New Delhi). Telangana Rashtra Samitis (TRS) agenda is BJP agenda. Some parties are there. They are aligned with the BJP,” Naidu said. The TDP chief said some parties might join them after the elections to Assemblies in five states and “one or two” might come after the Lok Sabha elections. “Our effort is to bring everybody on board to fight the BJP,” he said. To a question, he said sharing of seats (in elections) and other things would come after some time.

NEW DELHI, NOV 10 (PTI): The Election Commission Saturday initiated the process of finding an alternative to Mizoram chief electoral officer who is facing a massive agitation for his ouster by a conglomerate of civil society and student organisations. A Commission spokesperson said that in a meeting held here Saturday, the poll panel has “only decided to call for a panel of names for the post of State CEO from chief secretary of Mizoram.” The spokesperson said “next steps” will “only be taken after receiving the report of the team led by Deputy Election Commissioner Sudip Jain”. State chief electoral officer S B Shashank had reportedly sought deployment of additional central armed police forces (CAPF) in the state and complained to the EC that the state’s former principal secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo was interfering with the poll process. Chuaungo, a native of Mizoram and a Gujarat-cadre IAS officer was relieved of his duties earlier this month. The NGO Coordination Com-

mittee - a conglomerate of civil societies and student organisations - along with other political leaders, had been demanding Shashank’s exit from the state since then. The NGO also demanded that 11,232 Bru voters lodged in six Tripura relief camps be allowed to exercise their franchise at their respective polling stations in Mizoram and not in Tripura as committed by the poll panel in 2014. Meanwhile in Mizoram, the visiting Election Commission team led by Jain, has left for New Delhi on Saturday after holding talks with the stakeholders in view of the demands for removal of Mizoram Chief Election Officer Shashank, officials said. The team would submit its report to the Election Commission, they said. The EC team met the NGO Coordination Committee, church leaders, IAS Association leaders and visited the Myanmar border at Champhai in Mizoram before leaving for Delhi, they said. This was the second EC team to visit the state to find a solution to the situation arising out of the demand for the removal of the CEO.
