State-wide total lockdown extended till May 31

DIMAPUR, MAY 19 (NPN): After reviewing the current situation and taking into account the consistent rise of Covid19 positive cases in the State, the High Powered Committee (HPC) has decided to extend the ongoing State-wide total lockdown with existing conditions till May 31. This was decided at an emergency meeting of the HPC held at the chief minister’s residential complex, Kohima on Wednesday under the chairmanship of chief minister Neiphiu Rio to review Covid-19 situation in the State after imposition of the State-wide total lockdown from May 14. Online classes: HPC also decided that schools, on completion of summer break, would be allowed to resume online classes from May 24 as per detailed SOPs to be brought out by the school education department. Oxygen supply: For more efficient management of oxygen supply through cylinders, HPC decided that a centralised depot of oxygen cylinders would be created at Chumukedima Police Complex for efficient distribution and to minimise turnaround time in refilling cylinders. Zonal depots too would be set up at strategic locations across the State. Community surveillance: To check the spread of

the virus in rural areas, HPC also decided to put in place a system of community surveillance through ASHA workers as well as NSRLM and other volunteers from civil society organisations, which would be coordinated by the respective district task forces. Appointments: It further decided that vacancies of doctors and nurses under NHM caused due to the recent recruitment of 56 doctors would be filled up by engaging suitable professionals on temporary basis. The meeting was attended by Health minister S Pangnyu Phom; planning, LR & parliamentary affairs minister Neiba Kronu; IT, science & technology and NRE adviser Mmhonlumo Kikon, minister in-charge of Kohima district, chief secretary J Alam and senior officials from health, home and NSDMA etc., Kronu and Kikon, government spokespersons on Covid-19 stated in a joint statement. The decision to extend lockdown also comes a day after chief minister Neiphiu Rio, in his virtual address to the people of the state on May 18, reminded all the state was grappling with an extraordinary scenario and urged all to be prepared that the lockdown may even need to be extended if the situation required.

Vax should be taken 3 months after People continue to flout lockdown rules in Dmu recovery from Covid: Health ministry

s Staff Reporter: Despite several warnings being issued by the state authoriteis to penalize defaulters during the lockdown under the Epidemic Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code, it has been observed that many people still continue to blatantly flout the lockdown guidelines in Dimapur, which is the worst Covid-hit district in the State. Particularly during the morning hours, people continue to throng the markets to buy essential commodities. Though authorities have said that the current situation was not a law and order issue, they said that people should by themselves understand the seriousness of the second Covid wave that has taken the lives of many and spreading rapidly by the day. A police official said that policemen have been carrying out their duties with utmost restraint while dealing with people. However, the official

expressed dismay that people continue to blatantly flout the lockdown rules. While admitting that people needed to buy essential items, the official said that the laid down guidelines clearly state that such activities were permitted in the respective colonies or villages. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo claimed that law and order situation was under control and criminal cases were low. Speaking to media persons at DC’s office conference hall, CP said 6,500 people were fined

for violation of traffic rules and more than 500 for violation of Covid-19 SOPs. Expressing sorrow over the death of two policemen due to the virus, he said many had contracted it while performing their duties. Meanwhile, CP has appealed to all those exempted from the purview of the total lockdown to not misuse their privilege. Maintaining that the public were self-disciplined and cooperating with the measures imposed by the state government, he, however, lamented that some of those exempted were flouting rules.

NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (PTI): Those suffering from COVID-19 as well as those who have contracted it after taking the first vaccine dose should go for the jabs three months after fully recovering from the disease, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday. Also, COVID19 vaccination is recommended for all lactating women and an individual can donate blood after 14 days of either receiving anticoronavirus shot or testing RT-PCR negative, if suffering from the disease. These decisions were taken by the ministry based on the fresh recommendations by The National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC) and have also been communicated to the states and union territories, an official statement said. These recommendations have been based on the evolving situation of the COVID-19 pandemic and emerging global scientific evidence and experience, the ministry said. COVID-19 vaccination should be deferred by three months after recovery

in individuals having lab test proven SARS-CoV-2 individuals having lab test proven SARS-2 COVID19 illness, according to the statement. Also, vaccination in COVID-19 patients who have been given anti-SARS-2 monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma to be deferred by three months from the date of discharge from the hospital. In case of individuals who have received at least the first dose and got COVID-19 infection before completion of the dosing schedule, the second dose should be deferred by three months after clinical recovery from COVID-19 illness, the health ministry said in the statement. People with any other serious general illness requiring hospitalisation or ICU care should also wait for 4-8 weeks before getting the COVID-19 vaccine, the ministry said. According to the ministry, it is advisable to receive the both the doses irrespective of past history of COVID infection as this will help in developing a strong immune response against the disease.

The COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all lactating women. There is no requirement for screening of the vaccine recipients by Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) prior to COVID-19 vaccination, the statement said. Regarding vaccination of pregnant women, the matter is under discussion and further deliberation by the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), it said. The ministry which has accepted the recommendations of the NEGVAC has written to states and union territories to direct the officials concerned to take note of these recommendations and undertake necessary action for their effective implementation. States have been advised to ensure effective dissemination of the information to service provides as well as the general public, through use of all channels of information and communication in the local languages, the statement said. States have also been advised to undertake training of the vaccination staff at all levels.

The government said that the kit has a higher accuracy of detecting the various mutant strains of the Covid-19 virus. It also has 100 per cent specificity in detection, the government said. has validated the kit at the National Institute of Virology, Pune, and found that it has 97.3% sensitivity and 100% specificity in covid19 detection. Meanwhile, SCTIMST has signed a nonexclusive license MoU with Huwel Lifesciences, Hyderabad, on 14th May 2021 to commercialize the kit. ICMR advises against indiscriminate COVID-19 home testing using RAT kit Meanwhile, ICMR has advised against indiscriminate COVID-19 home testing using Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs), saying it should be used only on

symptomatic individuals and on the immediate contacts of laboratory confirmed positive cases. All individuals who test positive through the RAT kit may be considered as true positives and no repeat testing is required, ICMR said in an advisory. “Home testing by RAT is advised only in symptomatic individuals and immediate contacts of laboratory confirmed positive cases. Indiscriminate testing is not advised,” it said. “All RAT negative symptomatic individuals may be treated as suspect

COVID-19 cases and are advised to follow the ICMR/ Ministry of Health home isolation protocol while awaiting the RT-PCR test result,” the advisory stated. Home testing should be conducted as per the procedure described by the manufacturer in the user manual. The ICMR said the home testing mobile app is available in Google play store and Apple store and must be downloaded by all users. The mobile app is a comprehensive guide of the testing procedure and will provide a positive or negative test result to the patient.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 9 (NPN): Dimapur district nodal officer for managing Covid-19 activities and agriculture production commissioner (APC) Y Kikheto Sema claimed that Team Dimapur increased bed capacity by 205 within a week amidst the rising Covid-19 cases in the district. Addressing the media at deputy commissioner (DC) office’s conference hall here on Wednesday, he said Dimapur now had a total capacity of 296 beds – 51 at Faith Hospital and Institute of Medical Sciences, 10 at Nikos Hospital, 25 at Eden Medical Centre, six at Zion Hospital, 104 at Christian Institute for Health Sciences and Research and 100 at District Hospital Dimapur. Over all, he said there were 40 ICU beds, 192 oxygen beds, 25 non-oxygen beds and 10 makeshift beds. He claimed that several private hospitals have assured to further increase their bed capacities for in-

take of more Covid-19 patients, and thus, he added that the district could witness an increase of bed capacity to around 300 in the next few days. Kikheto further informed that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) had buried a total of 158 bodies of Covid patients without anyone having been infected by the virus, while reminding that a maximum of 20 persons can attend a burial by following the SOP so that the rituals could be performed. He said he had witnessed SDRF personnel praying for the departed souls with none of the deceased’s family members being present. Kikheto remarked that it was wrong on the part of village councils and their leaders to deny burial of their own villagers who had succumbed to the virus. He claimed that the bodies and coffins were properly sanitised and wrapped and were thus safe for proper and respectable burial.

Mucormycosis: fungal infection affecting Covid patients NEW DELHII, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic there have been multiple reports across the country of very high incidence of mucormycosis among Covid-19 patients, especially in those who are diabetic and have received steroids, The Indian Express report stated. C ov i d A s s o c i a t e d Mucormycosis (CAM) has been associated with high morbidity and mortality, exorbitant treatment costs and has led to shortage of antifungal drugs.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Professor Arunaloke Chakrabarti, Head, Department of Medical Microbiology, PGI, and in charge, Centre of Advanced Research in Medical Mycology, shares the recommendations of the Fungal Infection Study Forum, of which he is the chairman, to clarify misconceptions regarding CAM, and Dr Rajesh Gera, senior consultant of internal medicine at Paras Hospital also weighs in. Though basically known to be a ‘hospital acquired’ fungal disease,

mucormycosis been attributed to various reasons, including unregulated drug use and lack of blood sugar surveillance during home isolation, a Times of India report stated. Several medical experts said many Covid patients and their relatives resorted to various experiments with drugs, based on messages on social media, unscientifically shared prescriptions, and also suggestions from unqualified doctors, which had a detrimental effect on their health.

minister, N Biren Singh, has introduced “MOMA Market” a mobile app that enables residents to order fresh vegetables and have them delivered to their homes, The Sentinel Assam reported. The app was free to download, and it would be available on Google Play Store soon. The app’s iOS version will be released soon. Under supervision of chief minister N Biren Singh, Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA), Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Manipur, launched the application to make fresh vegetables available for daily consumption and to reduce the distress sales of farm produce during the COVID19 pandemic lockdown. In order to avoid loss of vegetable produce and the spread of COVID-19, MOMA has been assigned to work in the area and channel farm products to consumers via home delivery. MOMA will collaborate with Farmers Producer Companies (FPCs) to harvest vegetables from different farms. It will then be transported to Sanjenthong and other locations for cold storage and warehouse. These bulk goods will be distributed to licensed selling firms for retail packaging. Finally, the consumer’s MOMA Market order will be shipped to their doorstep. Meanwhile, representatives of local clubs in Imphal East and Imphal West have been invited by MOMA to conduct home deliveries in their jurisdiction without violating COVID-19 SOPs. Owing to a shortage of capacity and funding, the organization has been unable to satisfy a high demand for fresh vegetables and fruits delivered to homes.

Burglary in PPE Kits caught on CCTV. (East Mojo)

G U WA H AT I , M AY 1 9 (AGENCIES): A personal protective equipment kit, commonly known as a PPE kit, is an important shield for healthcare workers against COVID-19. However, over time, it has also become a tool for miscreants to execute crimes, as it reduces the risk of revealing their identity. In yet another such incident, burglars in PPE kits robbed a store in Guwahati’s Jalukbari area, East Mojo reported. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera placed outside the shop. A team of five burglars was caught on camera while breaking into the store. Two of the burglars can be seen

wearing PPE kits. According to the shop owner, the thieves stole around Rs 5,000 in cash and several other expensive materials made of bell metal, brass and copper. “The theft took place at around 1:50 am. They were five of them, and they took several items made of bell metal, brass and copper along with other costly products,” the shop owner said. What is surprising is that the shop is located very close to the Jalukbari Police Station. And the incident took place at a time when the movement of only frontline workers and those in a medical emergency is allowed.

WSYF reacts to UZYF statement

DIMAPUR: In a rejoinder to United Zeliangrong Youth Federation (UZYF), Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) claimed that its statements were backed by documentary evidences including government records and court orders, and alleged that UZYF was harping on “baseless rejoinders bereft of supportive documents”. Therefore, WSYF through its media cell stated that it did not feel necessary to respond to beating around the bush statements of UZYF. “However, lest the readers think the UZYF statements to be true even though it lacked documentary evidences”, WSYF said it chose to highlight only few points to clear any doubts from the minds of the public. While acknowledging the Zeliangrong as a whole as Nagas, WSYF stated that the Nagas of Manipur have no say in the present dispute, as it was purely within the demarcated state of Nagaland. WSYF said that it was a fact that many people have been brought from Naga areas of Manipur to settle in Nagaland state, thus leading to creation of discord and disharmony. “No amount of justification and attempts to distort the Naga history of inhabitation of Dimapur area can change the fact. The truth shall remain the truth,” it added. Stating that the historical truth will show otherwise of the statements of the Zeliangrong people about their claims on Intangki area as well, WSYF said that as a matured tribe, the Sumis do not desire to involve several communities into the picture. On the allegation by UZYF that the WSYF was indulging in “programmed continuation of lies and twists.”, WSYF asked UZYF to have clearly point out which part of its statement was a repeated lie. It said that Without articulating on the points and merely generalizing it on the surface and terming it as a lie amounted to confusing the public and it clearly reflected the intention of the UZYF. Claiming that numerous points issued by WSYF had been backed by strong documents and records, the front said that if for any reason UZYF had doubts, then they could “verify

it with the appropriate authority and satisfy themselves instead of using the keyboard to describe it as a lie and fictitious.” With regard to the hand written notes at the March 22 incident site, WSYF asked UZYF to provide proof that the Sumis had written it. “Blindly accusing the Sumis of having written the notes merely because the word ‘Sumi’ was in the content, is only imaginary and anticipatory bereft of proof when it could be handiwork of anybody to trigger mass hatred towards Sumis,” it said, adding that even the authorities would first have to find proof of who had written the notes. However, WSYF said it was unfortunate that UZYF came to absurd conclusion about “Sumi hand of involvement” in the March 22, incident when WSYF has been requesting the Sumi community to maintain peace even in the face of extreme provocation. Further, WSYF said official records were available as far as establishment of Kiyevi village and other Sumi villages in the Western Sumi area is concerned. Stating that any aggrieved party could take recourse to legal action, it however said that it was unnecessary drag in the Chakhro Angami into the picture. “...The Chakhro Angamis or Angamis in general are a powerful tribe who can speak for themselves and fend for themselves if need arise,” it added. It also said that the admission that Lamhainamdi was established on March 31, 2019 was itself against the strictures issued by the state government as early as January, 2019. Despite chief secretary’s June 25, 2019 order to maintain Status, WSYF alleged that developments were still continuing. It said that the February 1 report had also clearly mentioned about continuing developmental works, much against the status quo order, adding that the “status quo cannot be stretched to suit the wild imagination of the UZYF.” Further, the Sumi villages mentioned were way outside the area covered by status quo order, WSYF claimed while alleging that the government agencies turned blind eye to the continuous development of

Lamhainamdi village without enforcing its own order, leading to the unfortunate loss of lives of three Naga brothers. “It is the Sumis who stand on a better footing than the UZYF to blame the government for not enforcing its own status quo order,” it stated. Asserting that the allegation about open involvement of UG groups in establishing villages was extremely outrageous, WSYF reminded that the immense contribution of Sumis to the Naga national movement was an open truth. “We take pride for the sacrifices rendered by our people for the cause of the Nagas. As such, be it a village functionary, GB or the public; services rendered by them towards the Naga national cause is purely on their personal accord and it strongly reflects patriotic qualities,” it added. Stating that it does not enjoy the endless media warfare, WSYF opined that UZYF could approach the appropriate legal forum to redress their grievances, if any, and “desist from image building tactics thereby attempting to dislodge documental arguments of WSYF.” WSYF said that trying to play down the pains and struggles of the early settlers in Dimapur area by judging it from the present day convenient times was “akin to derecognizing the sacrifices of pioneers be it Sumi or any other community.” With regard to the current dispute, WSYF said a lot of judicial pronouncements had been made in the past which was on record. WSYF leaves it to the appropriate authority to peruse and conclude, it said, adding that it believes in arguments based on available documents and records and not on imaginary arguments. “Much contrary to the hypocritic diplomacy of UZYF; the WSYF, although provoked by the statements of UZYF, chooses to remain calm and peaceful in the interest of communal harmony. However, our peaceful overture and mild statements focusing only on available records should not be misconstrued as a toothless or handicapped organization,” it said.

reed for meat especially those considered special delicacies such as bats, caveat. monkey, giant jungle rats to name a few have proven unhealthy and dangerous. The Chinese myth for every kind of wild life meat that are supposed to have medicinal value, is unverified scientifically. From Tiger’s claw. rhino horn and tiger skin, the Chinese pursue their delicacies and also promote the hunting to extinction of many animal species. Even in the north east many animal diseases are being transmitted to human but unfortunately authorities have not take it up seriously. in China, close contacts between humans and food animals have resulted in the transmission of many microbes from animals to humans. The two most notable infectious diseases in recent years are severe acute respiratory syndrome and avian influenza. For the recent and still ongoing avian influenza H5N1 outbreak that originated in Southeast asia, from 2003 to 21 april 2006, 204 humans have been infected, with 113 deaths. most patients had recent direct contacts with poultry. These traditional Chinese sayings illustrate the importance of ‘having good and delicious food’ among the Chinese, especially those from southern China, where the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SarS) epidemic originated. in China, food is considered most nutritive and delicious if it is freshly prepared from live animals, whereas frozen meat is considered inferior. Therefore, wet-markets are located in the vicinity of residential areas in most parts of China, which allows frequent contacts between human and live food animals. The types of microbes transmitted are in turn determined by the different modes of contacts. ingestion of undercooked or contaminated freshwater fish has been associated with acquisition of gastrointestinal microbes such as Clonorchissinensis .We read of animal diseases such as avain flu caused by H5N2,H7N2 and have caused widespread panic in many parts of the globe. Then Japanese encephalitis, swine flu or Nipah etc. The coronavirus or specifically the Wuhan Virus is the story of laboratory tinkering. Whether the experiment was to find out vaccine anti dote or study how the virus can attack and kill thousands within weeks. Emerging zoonotic diseases spread from animals to humans where there is an interface allowing pathogens to jump the species barriers, and crowded conditions, where different species intermingle, increase these interfaces. Live and wet markets serve as hubs where humans and different animal species are in close proximity, but they are also crucial for food supply in many countries. Live and wet markets have been linked to the emergence of different epidemic/pandemic diseases, including Wuhan virus (COViD-19) and different subtypes of influenza a viruses, and they are also an important source of foodborne pathogens. The local market on live meat in the state is extremely dirty and hygiene is probably the last thing on the mind. These growing threat of zoonotic diseases which are no longer rare but which are too frequent should make people sit and take note about meat consumption. in fact it is healthier if people can make only one day in a week for non-veg meal or switch to vegetarianism so avoid all these threats.

dailydevotion Out of the Wreck I Rise

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? —Romans 8:35 God does not keep His child immune from trouble; He promises, “I will be with him in trouble…” (Psalm 91:15). It doesn’t matter how real or intense the adversities may be; nothing can ever separate him from his relationship to God. “In all these things we are more than conquerors…” (Romans 8:37). Paul was not referring here to imaginary things, but to things that are dangerously real. And he said we are “super-victors” in the midst of them, not because of our own ingenuity, nor because of our courage, but because none of them affects our essential relationship with God in Jesus Christ. I feel sorry for the Christian who doesn’t have something in the circumstances of his life that he wishes were not there. “Shall tribulation…?” Tribulation is never a grand, highly welcomed event; but whatever it may be— whether exhausting, irritating, or simply causing some weakness— it is not able to “separate us from the love of Christ.” Never allow tribulations or the “cares of this world” to separate you from remembering that God loves you (Matthew 13:22). “Shall…distress…?” Can God’s love continue to hold fast, even when everyone and everything around us seems to be saying that His love is a lie, and that there is no such thing as justice? “Shall…famine…?” Can we not only believe in the love of God but also be “more than conquerors,” even while we are being starved? Either Jesus Christ is a deceiver, having deceived even Paul, or else some extraordinary thing happens to someone who holds on to the love of God when the odds are totally against him. Logic is silenced in the face of each of these things which come against him. Only one thing can account for it— the love of God in Christ Jesus. “Out of the wreck I rise” every time.

Bee engaged – Build Covid-19 and Suffering and God Back Better for Bees T 20th May is World Bee Day

H

ealthy biodiversity is a must if we want a healthy life. There are many species which have been crucial parts of the bio diversity which has sustained lives on earth. We eat food but most of us do not produce them so we may not link or think how food items are being grown. We have been studying about pollination and its importance and whenever we talk about pollination then the first thing that comes to our mind is bees. For centuries bees, among the hardest working creatures on the planet, have benefited people, plants and the environment. By carrying pollen from one flower to another, bees and other pollinators enable not only the production of an abundance of fruits, nuts and seeds, but also more variety and better quality, contributing to food security and nutrition. Pollinators affect 35 percent of the world’s crop production, increasing outputs of 87 of the leading food crops worldwide, plus many plant-derived medicines. Three out of four crops across the globe producing fruits or seeds for human use as food depend, at least in part, on pollinators. It is a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the United Nations designated 20th May as World Bee Day (WBD). The goal is to strengthen measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators, which would significantly contribute to solving problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries. The date for this observance was chosen as it was the day Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern apiculture, was born. Janša came from a family of beekeepers in Slovenia, where beekeeping is an important agricultural activity with a longstanding tradition. This year, WBD falls during an exceptional moment in history, where many countries continue to deal with the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. By observing WBD, we can raise awareness on the essential role bees and other pollinators play

in keeping people and the planet healthy, and on the many challenges they face today. The day has been celebrated since 2018 and this year marks the fourth celebration around the world. The fourth observance of World Bee Day will be celebrated - in the midst of a still ongoing pandemic - with a virtual event organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the occasion focusing on the theme “Bee engaged – Build Back Better for Bees”. Today bees, pollinators, and many other insects are declining in abundance. Present species extinction rates are 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal due to human impacts. Close to 35 percent of invertebrate pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, and about 17 percent of vertebrate pollinators, such as bats, face extinction globally. To achieve all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is important for us to work actively for the safety of all pollinators. Bees are deckling for many causes including change in land use, use of pesticides, enhancing mono cropping, etc. Government must encourage beekeepers and extend support to entrepreneurs focusing on bee keeping. Apart from governments many other agencies may also contribute towards ensuring healthy pollination. There is no doubt that all of us are fighting the pandemic and honey produced by bees can give us immunity. For our own self interest we must extend our support to safeguard these pollinators including bees. As an individual all of us can contribute towards this and the best way is to plant a diverse set of native plants, which flower at different times of the year. We can buy raw honey from local farmers and raise awareness around us by sharing information within our communities and networks with a focus that the decline of bees shall affect us all. Let’s cheer the role of our petite food heroes in improving food safety, nutrition and ensuring achievements of SDGs. ranjan K Baruah bkranjan@gmail.com

hirty years ago, on my way to Bade to survey land donated by the village for what would become the Oriental Theological Seminary campus, I met a young man from Bihar atthe Ura Villagetinali. I had stopped at this young man’s pan shop to purchase some bottles of mineral water that hot summer day. Over the years, this man became a familiar face on my daily trips to the seminary, and over the decades, I saw him raise his children from small babies to grown adults. On May 6, 2021, Covid-related complications took the man’s life, which I came to know only after he was cremated. Last Monday, on returning from Bade I made a stop outside of his home in Ura. The moment his wife and children saw me, I was engulfed by a feeling of sadness. Before saying a prayer for the grief-stricken wife and children, I said, “Iswarlaka shanti nijormontitakibi.” Driving home to Dimapur, I wondered whether my prayer and words were justified when the deceased’s family members were so overwhelmed by the loss of a beloved husband and father. This pandemic of our contemporary era, with over 3million deaths, reminds me of Samuel Beckett’s play “Endgame,” a portrayal of human tragedy and absurdity. I am reminded of this play nowadays because of the seemingly tragic and absurd circumstances that surround the pandemic. Regardless, I find something inherently nihilistic in wallowing in this tragedy and absurdity. I, for one, am more inclined to look beyond the meaninglessness of our conditions and to face historical happenings without taking pleasure at nullifying the presence of a divine reality. Without a doubt, Covid-19 has crashed the optimism of the post modern era. In such a time, history tells us that any optimism, though helpful, is dangerously anthropocentric if based solely on the rationalism of the Enlightenment. Firstly, in our time, anthropocentrism is seen in the deification of humankind as saviors. Time and again, however, the notion that deified men and womencan direct the course of history has proven to be false. As it turns out, the present happenings of pain and misery cannot be placed on the subject of theodicy—the justice and divine goodness of God; rather, they must be placed on anthropodicy—a humanist argument that seeks to justify the fundamental good of humans despite some evil human acts. History bears witness to the fact that instead of God, humankind is the perpetrator of misdeeds through evil intention and self-glorification.

Second, most popularly, the classic approach of the atheist is, “If God is all-powerful and all-knowing, why does God allow widespread catastrophes like Covid-19 to happen? Therefore, God must not exist. “Much so with Modernism and Postmodernism, an overwhelming feeling of the absence of God has been the impetus for the belief that God does not exist, which, by its very definition, is a form of religion itself. Conversely, such logic has been the occasion for the most primal and basic trust of faith in transcendence beyond this empirical world of senses alone. How, then, can one trust in a good God in the midst of suffering and death? Professor Elie Wiesel, a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust and a Nobel Laureate, when asked about God vis-à-vis his experiences in the Auschwitz concentration camp responded, “It seemed impossible to conceive of Auschwitz with God as to conceive of Auschwitz without God.” He reverses from the absence of God in the world to the pathos of God. Simply because God is, humanity can face enormous suffering, pain, and death. Professor Wiesel went on to say, “I rarely speak of God. To God yes. I protest against Him. I shout at Him. But open discourse about the qualities of God, about the problems that God imposes, theodicy, no. And yet He is there, in silence, in filigree.” To be sure, humanity cannot glorify pain, suffering, and death—but our world avoids pain, suffering, and death nonetheless, which is a sign of our emptiness. A common occurrence in today’s world is that we have become incapable of suffering because we have pushed aside suffering from our consciousness. As a result, hope for the future grows dimmer in our consciousness and our capacity to suffer and mourn is emptied from our being. We essentially give up from being active participants in history because we run away from suffering. In this light, St. Paul’s letter to the Romans needs to be highlighted with clarity: “And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us” (Romans 5: 2-5). Paul is not an irrational man. He does not begin from subjective idealism, but rather from an objective realism, when he says that the love of God is poured into our hearts. The readiness to empathize others’ suffering

and the power to face suffering with hope comes from the strength to love which is given to us by the Holy Spirit. For Paul, the source for such a love, which goes beyond human limits, is not found in metaphysics but rather is experienced in the One who suffered and died at the Cross. Paul found love at the Cross, which came to meet him. Humanity’s ability to love has its foundation in the experience of being loved. In the theology of Paul it is called the love of God at the Cross of Christ. Divine love is a creative love for the outcasts, the fallen woman and man, the sorrowful and the painful, the hopeless. This creative love is from the work of God, and when humanity experiences such love, it lifts them to new heights. If today’s woman and man should “accept and value” themselves as motivational speakers suggest, then we surely need this love to be able to face the suffering, pain, and death that we will inevitably face. In 2 Corinthians 4: 8-10, Paul testifies: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” The world may scorn at Paul’s theology has being weak.Regardless, the followers of Christ find strength in the seemingly “powerless Cross of Christ” and learn the power of hope. Today, Covid-19 is ravaging the world. Our future seems swallowed up in our present suffering. A world without hope is a humanity that has become cold and numb to sorrow and pain. It is not ridiculous, however, to accept suffering in the world filled with apathy and trauma. It is not ridiculous to love others as our own. It is not ridiculous to trust in God in a world of uncertainty. Paul’s love of God at the Cross of Jesus Christ does not protect us from all suffering as much as it protects us in all suffering. The God of love did not spare His own Son but died for us. Therefore, how can God fail to give us every thing? (Romans 8: 32).This is Paul’s reason that nothing can endanger the Christian, since nothing can separate her from this love of God manifested in Jesus Christ. For Paul, theodicy is not merely theological theory but a much-lived and sustainableway of life. Indeed, we are all called to this hope! Who should or shouldn’t take the COVID-19 vaccine?

M

ore than 1.23 crore people have registered till the first week of May 2021 through Co-Win and Arogya Setu platforms in response to the opening of online registrations for Covid-19 vaccination for those who are above 18. A total of about 150 million shots have been given to date. Though, these cover only 11.5% of India’s population. The first phase of vaccination in India covered the frontline workers and the citizens’ over-45s. It has now been opened for all above 18 years in India from May 1. Demand for vaccination has suddenly grown many folds after the devastating second wave of Covid-19. But there are many myths and misconceptions about the COVID-19 vaccine who should or should not take it. There are several categories of people who are quite not clear if they should go for vaccination. This article describes the scientific basis if they should go for it or defer. Should pregnant women be vaccinated? Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that “globally, it has been observed that pregnant women are at a higher risk of complications and that of premature birth because they already have a low respiratory reserve and therefore vaccinating them is perhaps the best option available.” A recent study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology revealed that vaccine-induced immune responses were significantly greater than the response to natural infection and immune transfer to neonates occurred via placenta and breastmilk. The American College of Obstetricians and

Gynaecologists (ACOG) also recommends that the COVID-19 vaccine should not be withheld from pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. The COVID-19 vaccine is not a live virus vaccine, the mRNA present in the vaccine degraded quickly and cannot interfere with cell functions. Pregnant women may receive the vaccine if they are at high risk of exposure to the COVID19 virus or very likely to be in contact with people with COVID-19. Though, Covid-19 vaccines currently being used in India are not recommended by the Indian health authorities for pregnant women. Can breastfeeding (lactating) women get the vaccine? As per the WHO recommendations, breastfeeding women be vaccinated against COVID-19 and continue breastfeeding after vaccination. Currently, there are no data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in breastfeeding people or on the effects of mRNA vaccines on the breastfed infant or milk production/excretion. Though, early studies demonstrate secretion of the antibodies in the breastmilk which may protect the breastfed infant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA stated that COVID-19 vaccines are non-replicating vaccines. They can produce immune responses but do not reproduce inside host cells. people who would like to have a baby: There is currently no evidence that any vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, cause fertility problems. There is no evidence showing a link between menstruation, fertility, and vaccines. Anyone can take the vaccine during her period cycle also. The

clinical studies are undergoing for any possible side effects and the findings will be reported as they become available. At present, all future parents are encouraged to take the COVID-19 vaccine. people with allergies: Yes, people with severe allergic reactions to foods, oral medications, latex, pets, insects, and environmental triggers may get vaccinated. Though, people with a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to any component of the COVID-19 vaccine or injectable (intramuscular or intravenous) medication should NOT receive the vaccine. people with chronic disease or suppressed immune systems? The vaccine is safe and effective in people with chronic diseases including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, pulmonary, liver, or kidney disease, as well as chronic infections that are stable and controlled. Though specific efficacy and safety data are not yet available for people with immunosuppression or autoimmune conditions. Only limited clinical data is available against HIVinfected persons with the well-controlled disease. This group of people should be counselled by health professionals on the potential for reduced immune responses before vaccination. Frail and elderly people: The frail and elderly are at risk of becoming very sick from COVID-19 that is why they can be severely affected by even mild illness. They should be carefully considered on a case-bycase basis for the COVID-19 vaccines. Those who already had CoVID and recovered: The answer is yes as the

experts do not yet know how long you are protected from getting sick again after recovering from COVID-19. However, people who were treated for COVID-19 with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma should wait 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine. people who recently diagnosed with CoVID19: Yes, the person who was recently diagnosed with COVID-19 can get the first dose four weeks after onset of symptoms or a positive test (whichever is earlier). The second dose may be received after the completion of the isolation period. The isolation period may be counted for 10 days or 10 days plus 24 hours with no fever and an improvement in symptoms. Children below 18 years: Recently, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for use for ages 12 to 15 in Canada and the United States. Childrenmay receive the two shots of the same dose as an adult. This authorization comes at a time when people under the age of 18 account for 1 of every 5 newly reported coronavirus infections in the USA. In the vaccine clinical trial, there were no cases of COVID-19 infection in the children who received the vaccine and had high levels of antibodies in their blood. Who should not take the vaccine: Any people who have an allergy to any component of the vaccine should not take it. To date, the vaccine has only been recommended for children in the USA. However, currently, Indian health authorities do not recommend vaccination of children below 18 years of age, even if they belong to a high-risk group. People with thrombocytopenia (low blood platelet

count) should also take extra caution while taking the vaccination. Preventive measures to be taken after vaccination: The fully vaccinated people can be with other unvaccinated people from one household and may gather indoors to other vaccinated people without wearing masks. It is also essential that fully vaccinated people should continue to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart from other people in public or visiting with unvaccinated people from multiple households. Vaccines will work with the immune system so it will be ready to fight the virus after getting exposure. Many studies and evidence support that fully vaccinated people are less likely to be infected without showing symptoms (called asymptomatic infection) and potentially less

likely to spread the virus that causes COVID-19 to others. However, further investigation is ongoing. All adults should take the vaccination on the individual’s conditions and risk of exposure .Others having any doubt should consult their health practitioner before taking the vaccination. The head of the WHO urged wealthier nations to postpone their plans to give the COVID19 vaccines to children and teenagers. Priorities should be given to the health workers, people at high risk, old people above 65 years of age, and low-income countries. Wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart from others would help to reduce the chance of being exposed to the virus or spreading it to others. Irregularity in the process of booking vaccination slot online Sir,

As per the Government regulations, the online vaccination booking (24 and 25 May batch) for the 18- 44 years age group was scheduled to start today (19 May 2021) from 9AM. I got ready at around 08:30AM to be safe and when I logged in, in advance, to my surprise, I found that almost all the slots were already booked. I was looking for vaccination slots for PIN code 797113 or 797112. The slots for all the convenient centers were already full by 8:30AM and the ones for relatively far off places like Dhansiripar and Niuland also got filled by 8:40AM. This was a shock to me, as it wasn’t the scheduled time yet. I implore the Government of Nagaland and the agencies concerned to look into this immediately. Please bring complete transparency to the booking process without partial and vested interests marring the process of vaccination in Nagaland. akum Jamir, Dimapur

mitigate that effect and how to protect children from this, and take appropriate decisions accordingly. The management of oxygen and medicines also came up for discussion in great detail in the meeting. It was decided that oxygen and medicines would have to be arranged in advance. This will be done on a prior-

ity basis. It was emphasized that under no circumstances should there be black marketing of oxygen or any other drugs required for the treatment of Covid-19. A committee comprising senior officers will be set up to monitor this. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that if the number of hospital beds is increased, then oxygen should also be arranged in the same capacity. “We have to be ready for this. If the demand for oxygen increases suddenly, it has to be met,” he said. The meeting decided that the Delhi government will purchase oxygen tankers and cylinders in advance to avoid the problem of transporting them to different hospitals.

The Ministry, in its communication, has drawn attention of WhatsApp as to how its new privacy policy is a violation of several provisions of the existing Indian laws and rules. In fulfilment of its sovereign responsibility to protect the rights and interests of Indian citizens, the government will consider various options available to it under laws in India, sources added. The Ministry has also strongly taken up the issue of WhatsApp’s ‘’discriminatory treatment’’ to

Indian users vis-a-vis users in Europe. It has stated that: “As you are doubtlessly aware, many Indian citizens depend on WhatsApp to communicate in everyday life. It is not just problematic, but also irresponsible, for WhatsApp to leverage this position to impose unfair terms and conditions

Govt has reduced its reputation besides farmers’ income: Rahul

government is anti-farmer and the price rise will lead to an additional burden of Rs 20,000 crore on the farmers. Addressing a press conference here virtually Surjewala said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government have decided to ruin the farming sector of the country. In reality, the BJP government has proved to be the enemy of the farmers.” He said that it seems that the Modi government

wants to enslave the 62 crore farmers of the country. Surjewala said that as per the agriculture census there are 14.64 crore farmers who cultivate 15.78 crore hectares of land. He said that in the last six and a half years the BJP government has increased the cost of several items related to the agriculture sector and added an additional burden of Rs 15,000 per hectare. Slamming the government the Congress General Secretary said, “During

the Covid pandemic, by increasing the price of the fertilizers the government has tried its best to break the spine of farmers.” Earlier the government had brought the controversial farm laws, increased the cost of fuel tax on agriculture sector and no farm loan waiver to farmers, he said. “The cheating with farmers in the name of crop insurance and now increasing the prices of fertilizers and putting an additional pressure of Rs 20,000 crore on farmers proves that the DNA of the BJP government is antifarmers,” Surjewala said. He said that the prices of the 50 kg packet of DAP fertiliser has been increased to Rs 1,900 as compared to Rs 1,200 earlier. “The steep price hike of Rs 700 per bag has never happened in the last 73 years,” he said, adding that in 2020-

Toolkit BJP presents ‘proof’ of Gowda’s involvement NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): Amid the raging pandemic, the BJP continued its attack against the Congress party on the alleged “toolkit” to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi, presenting “evidence” of its involvement which the Opposition party trashed as “fake”. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra presented what he termed as “proof/ evidence” of the Congress’ “direct involvement” with the “toolkit”, authored by “Saumya Varma” who he claimed was associated with Congress leader Rajeev Gowda. “Friends yesterday Congress wanted to know who’s the Author of the

Sambit Patra

toolkit. Please check the properties of the Paper. Author is Saumya Varma, Who’s Saumya Varma ... The evidences speak for themselves: Will Sonia Gandhi & Rahul Gandhi reply?”, Gowda, however, said: “Let’s be clear We made a research note on Central Vista for the party It’s genuine & fact-based.

I tweeted yesterday that “COVID19 toolkit” is FORGED & is a MADE in BJP product. Patra is showing metadata/author of a real document & attributing it to a fake” BJP Generel Secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh said: “The more @ INCIndia tries to salvage the wreckages the more it sinks . Tax payers money to IIM , IITs are for nation building . But here his entire team’s energies are for Breaking India under Rahul Gandhi” Attacking the Congress over a wide range of issues including services carried out by its youth wing, the BJP on Tuesday alleged that the Opposition party

was trying to tarnish the country’s image through a “toolkit”. Patra claimed that Congress’ move to extend help to Covid patients was “more of a public relations exercise with the help of friendly journalists and influencers than a soulful endeavour.” Patra alleged that the Congress had created a “toolkit”, wherein it named the coronavirus variant found in India as the “Modi variant” and thereby attempted to defame the PM. A document circulating on social media—with Congress’ symbols and markings on it—was shared and cited by BJP leaders as an alleged call to arms by the party to its supporters.

21 about 93 lakh MT of fertilizer will be used and by increasing the prices the farmers will have to face an additional burden of Rs 13,020 crore. He claimed that when a month ago the opposition parties raised the issue of price rise of fertilizers the ministers and BJP leaders shared videos and denied all such reports. “However, they increased the prices later from back door,” he said. He cited the example of the price of a 50 kg packet of DAP and said in 2014, when the Congress-led UPA government demitted office, the price was Rs 1,075 while now the price has been increased to Rs 1,900. He said that similarly potash which used to cost Rs 450 during the UPA government is now being sold at Rs 825 per packet. He claimed that the Modi government imposed

the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on agricultural products. He said on pesticides the government imposed 5 per cent GST while on other agricultural products the GST ranges between 12 to 18 per cent. Attacking the government, Surjewala said that the government in the last one year increased the prices of diesel by Rs 21.22 per litre, which is commonly used by farmers and also imposed an additional excise duty of 28.37 per cent. Surjewala demanded that the government should immediately withdraw the increase in the price of the fertilizers. On Tuesday, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had also written to Union Minister DV Sadanand Gowda over the increase in the price of fertilizers and demanded that the government immediately review its decision.

NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (IANS): Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took a swipe at the Narendra Modi government over the hike in the prices of diesel and fertilizers saying it has “reduced” its reputation besides reducing the income of farmers. In a tweet in Hindi, Rahul Gandhi said, “What did Modi government increase? GST and petrol diesel fertilizer prices, income of his friends and atrocity on the farmers during the pandemic. What it reduced -- agricultural subsidy, farmer’s income and the reputation of the central government.” He attached a news report citing the increase in the prices of diesel and fertilizers. Earlier in the day, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala slammed the government saying the DNA of the BJP

claimed that it officially deferred its new privacy policy beyond May 15, 2021. However, the Ministry in its communication has asserted that deferral of the privacy policy beyond May 15, does not absolve WhatsApp from respecting the values of informational privacy, data security and user choice for Indian users. It has highlighted that the changes to the privacy policy and the manner of introducing the changes including by way of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) undermines the values of privacy, data security and user choice. The Ministry has also taken the same stand in the Delhi High Court, where this matter is sub-judice, the source pointed out.

NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has directed WhatsApp to withdraw its new privacy policy, according to sources. The IT Ministry believes that the changes to WhatsApp privacy policy and the manner of introducing the said changes undermines the sacrosanct values of informational privacy, data security and user choice and harms the rights and interests of Indian citizens, government sources said. The government has given seven days to WhatsApp to respond to the notice and if no satisfactory response is received, necessary steps in consonance with law will be taken,

NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (PTI): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre on a petition challenging the permission given by the Drugs Controller General of India to Bharat Biotech for conducting the phase II/III clinical trial of its Covaxin COVID-19 vaccine on the 2-18 age group. A Bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh gave the order on a petition filed by advocate Sanjeev Kumar against an the May 13 order of the Centre granting permission to conduct the phase II/III clinical trial of Covaxin on 525 healthy volunteers in the age group of 2-18 years. The plea argued that the clinical trial on Covaxin on minors will in all likelihood have adverse affect on their health - both mental and physical. “These children might even lose their life,” the plea said. It pointed out that the term ‘volunteer’ cannot be used for these minor children between the age of 2 to 18 as they cannot comprehend the consequences of such clinical trials.

In order for a person to become a subject matter of clinical trial, his or her consent is a pre-requisite. The volunteer is also required to enter into a contract with the institute carrying the clinical trial on various issues including compensation, damages in case the clinical trial fails. The volunteer is also required to give his or her consent that he or she has understood the entire agreement and is willing to volunteer for the clinical trial. “In this case, since the alleged volunteers belong to the age group between 2 to 18 years, it is crystal clear that no such contract could be signed by the alleged volunteer (who are all minors and hence not

competent to contract),” Mr Kumar argued. Even if the contract is signed by their parents or legal guardian, the same is unlawful as is clearly not for the welfare of the children. Mr Kumar also pointed out that due to the socio-economic scenario of the country, particularly in the lower rungs, the possibility of parent or legal guardian extending their consent out of questionable enticements and monetary considerations cannot be ruled out. The petition has called for direction to the authorities to place on record the details of all 525 children who will be subjected to the phase II/III clinical trials. The high court will hear the case again on July 15.

UP govt taking away teachers’ honour after death: Priyanka NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (IANS): Upping the ante against the Yogi Adityanathled government in Uttar Pradesh over the deaths of teachers and workers who were on duty during the recent panchayat polls, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday alleged that the state government did not provide proper treatment to them and also took away their honour after death. In a series of tweets in Hindi, Priyanka Gandhi, who is also the in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Congress, said, “Denying the list of 1,621 teachers, who died

and now the government is also taking away their honour after death.” Her attack came a day after a teachers’ body claimed that over 1,600 teachers and workers of the Basic Education Department had died of Covid-19 in Uttar Pradesh since the first week of April, and 90 per cent of them were on panchayat poll duty. As per the statement issued by Dinesh Chandra Sharma, president of the Uttar Pradesh Praathmik Shikshak Sangh, 1,621 teachers and workers of the Basic Education Department died between the first week of April and May 16.

Plea in SC seeking direction to impose Prez Rule in WB

NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (IANS): A plea has been moved in the Supreme Court urging it to issue directions to the Union gover nment to impose President’s rule in West Bengal. In his plea, advocate Ghanshyam Upadhyay pleaded for setting up a Special Investigation Team to probe killings of the BJP supporters after May 2. “The Petitioner also prays for direction to the Respondent No.4 to invoke Article 355 of the Constitution of India for the State of West Bengal and advise the President to issue a Proclamation under Article 356(1) of the Constitution of India for the State of West Bengal”, said the plea, seeking imposition of President’ rule in West Bengal. The plea said media reports have shown that

people belonging to TMC resorted to killing of certain BJP workers and their families and completely destroying their properties by putting the same on fire and in the process, and about 16 BJP workers were allegedly killed by the supporters of TMC. “Leading news channels of the country have shown on their channels the Governor expressing his utter shock on the failure of state government and state law enforcing agencies in protecting the lives and properties of a particular class of people and on the contrary, they and their families being killed by the people of ruling political party merely because they belong to BJP and /or merely because they in 2021 election to the State Legislature left the TMC and joined the BJP”, said the plea.

CBI arrests three Custom officials for demanding bribe

Plan till mid-June for efficient use of jabs, Centre tells states

NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): The Centre on Wednesday advised states to do advance planning for vaccine administration till mid-June and publicise it on Co-Win to ensure efficient utilisation of available jabs and avoid overcrowding at centres, while itself sharing advance information about supply and availability of doses. Between May 1 and June 15, 5.86 crore doses will be provided to states under the central quota. Besides, as per information received from manufacturers of Covishield and Covaxin, 4.87 crore doses will be available till the end of next month for direct procurement by states and UTs, according to the the health ministry. The vaccines supplied by the Centre will be used to immunise only those above 45 years of age and health and frontline workers. People in the age group of 18-44 years will get vaccine only from stocks procured by respective state government, private hospitals and corporates. The Centre has asked states to prepare a district-wise and vaccination centre-wise plan for the administration of Covid vaccine till mid-June, and publicise it.

Nurses and pharmacists ...

(From p-1) Council president said that efforts would be made to arrange for training and educating all nurses working in Nagaland to equip them with necessary skills and knowledge required to effectively care for COVID patients. “We are hopeful that the classes will help allay fears and anxiety related to the disease,” Dr. Simpson said, adding that response/queries from the nurses related to the Covid-19 care was welcome. Any nurse in need of counselling could contact Inaholi Asumi (9089734843). NNC has also requested all nurses to support and cooperate with the health care institutions to provide quality care to patients with Covid-19. “We call upon all nurses to be faithful to their duty, keeping the professional conduct, etiquette and our code of ethics in mind,” NNC president said. The council has warned that non-compliance, refusal to render care, failure to report to duty, abandoning the responsibilities and tendering resignation without proper ground would lead to disciplinary action as per the rules and regulations of the council. NSPC: Lauding the pharmacists for their “commendable job” since the onset of pandemic, the NSPC has appealed to all the registered pharmacists— hospital, clinical, community pharmacists (wholesale/ retail pharmacy) and regulators—to be on firm footing during the pandemic crisis. In a press release, NSPC registrar Khele Thorie urged the pharmacists to stand with the government, civil society organisations etc and play a role model as healthcare professionals with the best of their technical knowledge to save the society. The council has, therefore, appealed to all the registered pharmacists not to step back or hesitate from duty on the ground of pandemic crisis. “Let us recall the pharmaceutical code of ethics, professional etiquette and pharmacists’ oath laid down in the Pharmacy Practice Regulation 2015,” NPSC registrar stated. The council has warned registered members especially the community pharmacists not to indulge in any illegal practices while rendering services and duties including hoarding of medical equipments and supplies, charging of exorbitant rates on medical items and drugs, illegal practices such as black marketing etc. Any member found indulging in illegal practices, the council said would be liable for disciplinary action as per the provision of the Rule and Regulations of the Pharmacy Profession under appropriate sections and Acts of the law.

Assam reports first suspected ‘black fungus’ death (From p-1) Dr. Barman, who is looking after the clinical aspects of Covid-19, confirmed to Times of India that the doctors have got evidence of fungus presence in the patient’s body in his biopsy report. “A report has been sent to the chief minister and health minister about this case,” he said. Barman said that the patient was admitted in a private hospital in Guwahati with Covid symptoms more than 10 days ago. He was heavily diabetic. “Scattered blackish spots were seen on his entire face- near the eyes, nose and ear. As per these classical symptoms, doctors were suspecting it to be a black fungus infection case,” Barman said. He informed that antifungal medicines were applied on the patient

but doctors could not save him. “During admission in the hospital, oxygen saturation in his body was already low and he was struggling with diabetic complications,” Barman said. Health experts could not deny more black fungus deaths in the state but said that this case was the first black fungus infection reported in a patient who was tested Covid positive. “Perhaps in the first wave also such mucormycosis infection occurred. But during the second wave we are on the alert, as several deaths due to the fungal infection have been reported in different parts of the country,” Barman said, adding that fungal infection is common when a patient is put in the ICU. State health minister

Keshab Mahanta later told the media that the government has engaged health experts to study the case. “The black fungus issue will be discussed today. I will soon get the report from health experts,” he told the media. A health expert said that people with diabetes, cancer patients, those suffering kidney failure and patients who have undergone organ transplantation have low immunity levels and thus face a risk of fungal infection. “When a patient continues to get humidified oxygen that contains water vapour, it helps in growth of fungus,” a medical practitioner said. He said that the Covid precipitates black fungus infection, since many virus infected patients are regularly given oxygen support.

Mucormycosis: fungal infection affecting...

(From p-1) Other symptoms include paresthesia, fever, skin lesion, thrombosis and necrosis (eschar). Pulmonary mucormycosis may present itself in the form of fever, cough, chest pain, pleural effusion, haemoptysis, and worsening of respiratory symptoms. A cutaneous mucormycosis shows skin involvement with blisters or ulcers on areas affected. Other symptoms will include pain, warmth and swelling around blisters. A disseminated mucor develops in severely immuno-compromised people, where the fungus spreads throughout the body and causes several organs to dysfunction which may lead to shock and death. Mucormycosis: What is the treatment? Mucormycosis is a medical emergency even when clinically suspected. Team approach is required with infectious disease specialist, microbiologist, histopathologist, intensivist, neurologist, ENT specialist, ophthalmologist, dentist, surgeons, radiologists etc. It is important to control diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis. Reduce steroids (if patient is still on them) with aim to discontinue rapidly. Discontinue other immunomodulating drugs if the patient is taking these. How can you prevent this infection? As poorly controlled diabetes is the major issue, good glycemic control during management ACHIEVERS ACADEMY Registration started for NPSC CSAT-MADE-EASY Series Registration ends : 29th May ONLINE Class Starts : 1st June For DETAILS, Contact 9378129625/9366942624

of COVID 19 patients is required. Systemic steroids should only be used in patients with hypoxemia. Oral steroids are contra-indicated in patients with normal oxygen saturation on room air. If systemic steroid is used, blood sugar should be monitored. The dose and duration of steroid therapy should be limited to dexamethasone (0.1mg/kg/ day) for 5-10 days. Universal masking reduces exposure to Mucorales; avoidance of construction sites is recommended. During discharge of the patients, advice about the early symptoms or signs

of mucormycosis (facial pain, nasal blockage and excessive discharge, chest pain, respiratory insufficiency). Amid increasing concern over the rise in the number of cases of mucormycosis or “black fungus”, the Centre has asked doctors to look out for signs of the rare but potentially fatal infection in Covid-19 patients. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has advised people on the early detection and management of the black fungal infection that has been reported in a number of Covid-19 patients

weekend. Abbas’s secular Fatah movement had reached a deal with its long-term rivals Hamas to hold the vote, but Abbas cancelled it citing Israel’s refusal to guarantee voting in annexed east Jerusalem, which Palestinians claim as their future capital. Hamas accused Abbas of perpetrating a “coup” against the agreement, and of giving Israel a veto over the Palestinian right to vote. Palestinian experts have said Hamas is now seeking to establish itself as the real defenders of Palestinians against Israel, and as a more forceful voice than Abbas’s Fatah. Netanyahu said that when Hamas “saw that

these elections were not going to take place, they sought to... incite riots, to incite violence, in order to further their political goals”. He implied Hamas was also responsible for an escalation of unrest in east Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah area, where a Jewish settler effort to evict Palestinians from their homes has fuelled months of anger. And he blamed the Islamists for the clashes at AlAqsa, which was stormed by Israeli security forces in response to Palestinian stone-throwing during the holy month of Ramadan. “I have to say that we didn’t expect quite a conflagration,” Netanyahu said. “What we did was everything in our power to deescalate the potential conflict around Jerusalem and the Temple Mount,” he added, using the Jewish term for the Al-Aqsa compound, which is also a sacred site for Jews. The goal of the Gaza campaign is to “degrade Hamas’ capabilities, their terror capabilities, and degrade their will,” Netanyahu said.

The Senate last month approved the bill on a 94-1 vote, with GOP Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri casting the lone no vote, Xinhua reported. Tuesday. “Those of Asian descent have been blamed and scapegoated for the outbreak of Covid-19 and as a result Asian Americans have been beaten, slashed, spat on and even set on fire and killed,” Meng said. The legislation would create a position at the Justice Department to expedite a review of COVID-19-related hate crimes; provide grants for states to create hotlines for reporting hate crimes and for law enforcement training aimed at preventing

and identifying hate crimes; and direct federal agencies to work with community organizations to help raise awareness about hate crimes during the pandemic. “The COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act will strengthen our defenses to prevent and combat anti-AAPI violence and will build on steps already taken by President Biden. Together these actions will make a significant difference in how we address hate crimes in America, not only during this pandemic, but for years to come,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday. Reported hate crimes against Asian Americans in 16 of the nation’s largest cities and counties have increased 164 percent since last year, showed a recent study by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University San Bernardino.

Chelsea beats Leicester to go 3rd in EPL 10-Manchester City loses 3-2 at Brighton

Chelsea’s Jorginho celebrates with teammates after scoring his side’s second goal during the English Premier League match against Leicester City in London, May 18. (AP)

LONDON/BRIGHTON/MANCHESTER, MAY 19 (AP): This time beaten by Chelsea, Leicester’s FA Cup celebrations have been quickly deflated by seeing its Champions League hopes jeopardized. Chelsea dislodged Leicester from third place heading into the Premier League finale with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday to leave Champions League qualification in its own hands. Timo Werner had two goals disallowed in the first half after VAR reviews, infuriating Stamford Bridge’s first crowd of 2021. But Antonio Rüdiger scored his first goal in 15 months by bundling home

Ben Chilwell’s deflected corner with his thigh and Jorginho netted a penalty awarded after VAR determined Werner was brought down by Wesley Fofana. Kelechi Iheanacho side-footed in for Leicester to set up a nervy finish, but Ayoze Perez missed a golden chance to equalize as Chelsea avenged Saturday’s loss to Leicester in the FA Cup final. Beat Aston Villa on the road on Sunday and Chelsea will seal Champions League qualification for next season. There is always the backup route into the competition — by beating Manchester City in the May 29 final.

IOC reassures anxious Japan Olympics will be safe

TOKYO, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) reassured an anxious Japan on Wednesday that the Tokyo Olympics would be safe for athletes as well as the host community, amid mounting opposition to the Games and fears it will fuel a spike in COVID-19 cases. Speaking in Tokyo alongside senior Japanese officials, IOC chief Thomas Bach said he believed more than 80% of residents of the Olympic Village would be vaccinated or booked for vaccination ahead of the Games set to start on July 23. He rejected growing calls to cancel the global sporting showpiece, already delayed once due to the pandemic, saying that other sporting events had proved the Olympics could go ahead with strong COVID precautions. Bach’s comments came as Japan kept up a battle with a fourth wave of infections though its slow vaccination campaign has undermined already shaky public confidence that the Games should proceed. “Together with our Japanese partners and friends, I can only re-emphasise this full commitment of the IOC to organise safe Olympic and Paralympic games for everybody,” Bach said. “To accomplish this, we are now fully focused on the delivery of the Olympic Games.”

Less than 30% of medics in Japan’s major cities have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, with just 65 days left to the start of the Olympics, the Nikkei newspaper said. Cabinet figures showed this week that three months into Japan’s vaccination push, less than 40% of its medical workers were fully inoculated. The problem is especially pronounced in the capital, Tokyo, which plays host to the Games, and other large population centres, where the rate of fully vaccinated medical workers was less than 30%, the Nikkei added. Much of the vaccine supply was concentrated in large hospitals, and there had been problems in the reservation systems for medical staff, it said. The slow pace of vaccinations of doctors and nurses has been among the complaints cited by medical groups that oppose the Games.

Manchester City paid heavily for the 10th-minute sending-off of Joao Cancelo as the newly crowned Premier League champions squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at Brighton on Tuesday. Indian shooters Immediate focus on england Tests begin practice but WTC final special: Williamson in Croatia L O N D O N, M AY 1 9 eye on that (WTC final), NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (IANS): Olympic-bound Indian shooting squad based in Zagreb went through four hours of training routine on Wednesday morning after completing their week-long quarantine. “We arrived in Croatia last week but had to stay indoors for a week as per Covid-19 protocols. But on Wednesday, all the shooters went out to local ranges for practice in the morning session,” a coach of the national team told IANS from Zagreb. All the shooters and members of the coaching staff were tested for Covid19 on Tuesday. “The reports were negative and we were allowed to go out for training,” he added. According to the coach, the local shooting ranges -- under the aegis of the Croatia Shooting Federation (CSF) -- have good facilities and are excellent for practice. “The distance from the hotel to the ranges is just 6 km. Since the distance is less it is not taxing,” he added. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) had arranged a charter flight to Europe on May 11 to send the shooters. The national team will compete in the European Shooting Championships scheduled to be held in Osijek from May 21 and the Zagreb World Cup in June.

different story. Federer broke early to take a 2-1 lead and, with his serve finally firing, began imposing himself on proceedings, shortening the rallies with his serve-andvolley game and moving his opponent about at will. Federer earned himself two set points with his first ace of the match and forced the contest into the decider with a powerful crosscourt forehand. The third set followed a similar pattern to the

tors, who were allowed to attend the game following an easing of lockdown restrictions by the British government. Leandro Trossard pulled a goal back within two minutes after dribbling into the penalty box, twice shaping to shoot, and then finally smashing a rising shot into the corner. Adam Webster equalized with a header from Pascal Gross’ cross — for his first goal of the season — and fellow defender Dan Burn popped up to seal a famous win for Brighton in the 76th by scrambling in a shot after his initial effort was saved.

Benzema in France euro 2020 squad after almost 6-yr absence PARIS, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been named in France’s 26-man squad for this summer’s European Championship after an absence of nearly six years. He has not played for his country since 2015 as a result of his alleged involvement in an attempted blackmail case involving an ex-France team-mate. Benzema, 33, missed France’s Euro 2016 campaign and 2018 World Cup win as a result of the allegations. In January 2021 French prosecutors announced Benzema would face trial. He is accused of paying individuals to extort money from midfielder Mathieu Valbuena, 36, by threatening to make a sex tape public in 2015, but the striker argues a police officer used dishonest methods to draw him into the situation. After confirming Benzema was in his squad, France manager Didier Deschamps said: “The

most important is today and tomorrow. “There were important steps. We saw each other. We discussed at length. I had a long reflection to come to this decision. I won’t reveal a word of the discussion, that concerns us. I needed it, he needed it “.

Federer beaten in 3 sets by andujar in Geneva

G E N E VA , M AY 1 9 (AGENCIES): A rusty Roger Federer was beaten 6-4 4-6 6-4 by Spaniard Pablo Andujar on his return to the ATP Tour at the claycourt Geneva Open on Tuesday, but there were still plenty of positives for the Swiss in his performance. Federer missed nearly the entire 2020 season after twice having knee surgery. He returned to the Tour at the Qatar Open in March, but had not played since losing in the quarter-finals in Doha. On Tuesday, the 39year-old went toe-to-toe with Andujar in their firstever meeting, showing plenty of encouraging signs with his shot-making and on-court movement ahead of the French Open. After bouncing back in the second set, Federer looked poised to run away with the contest before an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration put paid to his hopes of an extended

a straight red after losing control of the ball and bringing down Danny Welbeck. He will miss City’s last league game of the season, at home to Everton on Sunday, but it won’t affect his availability for the Champions League final. The visitors coped fine with 10 men for the rest of the first half and Phil Foden doubled City’s lead in the 48th minute by finishing off a surging run down the left by poking a shot into the bottom corner. Then came Brighton’s fightback in front of a crowd of 10,000 specta-

second. After both players held their opening service games Federer edged ahead to take a 2-1 lead, earning the break with a glorious passing shot at full stretch. He held his next two service games to love, but it was Andujar who provided the late twist, breaking back to level the match at 4-4 and then holding to go 5-4 ahead. Federer, under pressure and serving to stay in the match, handed the Spaniard two match points with a pair of unforced errors. He saved both, but Andujar regained the advantage when Federer struck a forehand wide off the frame of his racket. The Spaniard sealed the win when Federer sent another forehand wide, celebrating by clasping his head in his hands, with a stunned look on his face, before running to the net to shake hands with his opponent.

Muller said “back again”, while Hummels wrote he was “glad to be back” and “really up for the new chapter”. Germany suffered their heaviest competitive defeat when they lost 6-0 to Spain in the Nations League during November 2020. “You can interrupt an overhaul under the circumstances,” said Low, who will be leaving his post following the tournament this summer. “In the defence we did not have the desired stability recently. Mats is a player who influences other players and brings experience.” Bayern Munich’s 18year-old attacking midfield-
