DIMAPUR, MAR 24 (NPN): Khango-led NSCN (K) has refuted the report of the Assam Rifles regarding the March 23, 2023 incident near NSCN (Khango) office area, Thilixu village.

NEW DELHI, MAR 24 (PTI/AGENCIES): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha, a day after he was convicted by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case. A notice issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said he stood disqualified from the House from March 23, the day of his conviction.

KOHIMA, MAR 24 (NPN): With the State police taking anti-narcotics pledge to not engage in the production, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transportation and consumption of psychotropic substances, deputy chief minister and

minister in-charge of Home & Border Affairs, Y Patton has directed the director general of police (DGP) to take stern action against police personnel found under the influence of intoxicants.

Patton said this during his first meeting with DGP Rupin Sharma and senior police officers after taking

charge of the department for the third time, at Police headquarters here on Friday.

He reminded that people had high expectations as police personnel were the eyes and ears of the citizens and responsible for their safety and security. However, he lamented that some personnel were found to be under the influence of liquor or indulged in drug abuse, which tarnished the image of the department. DGP mentioned that Nagaland Police would perhaps be the first police force in the country to administer anti-narcotics pledge to all its personnel.

AAGBA threatens indefinite bandh along Niuland road

DIMAPUR: Ato Area GBs’ Association (AAGBA) has expressed displeasure over the failure of the contractor to start black topping works from HN-29 Central Jail to Atu Ghoki, Hozukhe village. In a press release, AAGBA chairman Sheyipu Zhimomi, general secretary Kughato Yeptho and joint secretary Kavi N Zhimomi have threatened to impose indefinite bandh starting March 31, 2023 on highway along entire Ato area jurisdiction if their three-point demand was not fulfilled.

AAGBA informed that the resolution to impose bandh was taken its meeting held on March 24, 2023.

contractor agreed to start work immediately. However, AAGBA said that the contractor failed to keep his word time and again.

Reminding that the district administration it had earlier called off the indefinite bandh due to the appeal made by DC’s office, the AAGBA expressed hope that the administration would take immediate actions against the contractor.

‘Yes! We can end TB’: Nagaland raises awareness on TB epidemic KOHIMA

DIMAPUR: With an objective to raise awareness about Tuberculosis (TB) and to end the global TB epidemic, Nagaland Friday joined the world in observing “World TB Day” under 2023 theme, “Yes! We can end TB.”

DIMAPUR In Dimapur, National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP) Dimapur in collaboration with Red Ribbon Club (RRC), Immanuel College Dimapur observed “World TB Day” at Immanuel College. The programme was organised to sensitise the students and teaching staffs on Tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS, and blood donation.

At the programme, District TB Officer Dimapur, Dr. Benchilo Ngullie highlighted the prevalence of TB in Dimapur district, and informed that 1738 TB patients were availing free treatment in 2022.

She also sensitised the participants on the common signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis.

Stating that TB was 100% curable with early diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Ngullie informed that all diagnosis and treatment of TB was free of cost in all government health facilities.

She further urged the participants to support and take part in the TB “Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan” campaign and spread awareness on TB so as to remove the stigmas and discrimination attached to TB patients from the mindset of the community.

Dr. Ngullie also stated that the vision of NLEP was to eliminate TB from India by 2025, which could be possible only with the active involvement of the

community in the TB Free India movement.

DAPCU Dimapur, programme assistant, Ketou also highlighted on the routes of HIV and AIDS transmission and measures to prevent infection and further spread of the disease. He also sensitized the participants on the importance of blood donation.

During the programme, a TB champion also shared testimony on the fight against TB and urged the participants to be supportive to TB patients and not stigmatize or discriminate them.

The “World TB Day” was observed at the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare Kohima with commissioner and secretary-cum-chairman, executive committee National Health Mission (NHM), Kikheto Sema as the special guest.

Exhorting the gathering, Kikheto said each year “World TB Day” was commemorated to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. He urged the people to renew their commitment and rededicate themselves in the

fight against TB. Pointing out that TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers, he said the global efforts to combat TB have saved an estimated 66 million lives since the year 2000.

However, Kikheto said the Covid-19 pandemic reversed years of progress made in the fight and TB deaths increased in 2020 and 2021.

Aligning with the National Strategic Plan, he said the State Strategic Plan to eliminate TB in Nagaland by 2025 has been drafted. He further added that with the involvement and support of line depart-

In his speech, the DC said that Tuberculosis could be eliminated from the society through the collective efforts of the society, village and district. He also spoke on the importance of awareness and sensitizing the public, and appealed the participants to extend support to the TB patients psychologically, financially.

Exhorting the gathering, additional SP, Hongkin Chang said TB was treatable and curable, and urged the people to stop discriminating and stigmatizing the patients.

Tensions ran high among villagers on Manipur side of the international border after Myanmar military launched airstrikes on camps of the People’s Defence Force (PDF) located near the international border. Reports said that the Myanmar military continued aerial strikes at hideouts and camps of the PDF located near the Indo-Myanmar border.

ED conducts raids in Arunachal in APPSC, APSSB scams

ITANAGAR, MAR 24 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted multiple raids in Papum Pare district as part of investigation into the Arunachal Pradesh Staff Selection Board (APSSB) scam and APPSC paper leak case, official sources said on Friday.

The raids were conducted by ED under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002 while investigating the APSSB scam and Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) paper leak cases.

“The ED initiated investigations under PMLA, 2002 based on FIR regis-

tered by the Special Investigation Cell (SIC) under various sections of Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, 1988 and IPC1860 in the case of APPSB scam and FIR registered by SIC and CBI under various sections of PC Act, 1988 in APPSC paper leak case,” the ED said in a tweet.

The agency claimed that, during the search operation on Tuesday, it recovered incriminating documents and Rs 1.41 crore which has been frozen.

According to sources, the ED raided the house of Taket Jerang, the main accused in the APPSC paper leak scam.

Jerang is the main accused in all the scams related to the APPSC since 2014.

The ED officials reportedly recovered some important documents from his residence and are planning a follow-up action based on the documents, the sources said.

In another case, the ED reportedly froze and attached the accounts of Kapter Ringu and her relatives, in regard to the APSSB cash-for-job scam.

The SIC investigating the APSSB cash-for-job scam, had charge sheeted 19 persons in November 2020 for their alleged involve-

ment in the case.

So far two cases have been registered by the SIC in the APPSC paper leak issue and the cases have already been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The premier investigating agency filed a chargesheet on December 9 last year against eight individuals and another on January 30 this year against one person.

As many as 46 government officials and 13 private individuals have been arrested in connection with the malpractices conducted in the recruitment examinations.

Govt hikes DA for central govt employees, pensioners

NEW DELHI, MAR 24 (PTI): The Union Cabinet on Friday increased the dearness allowance and dearness relief by 4 per cent to 42 per cent to benefit 47.58 lakh central government employees and 69.76 lakh pensioners.The combined impact on the exchequer on account of both Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief will be Rs 12,815.60 crore per annum, I&B Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters after the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). The release of the additional instalment of dearness allowance to employees and dearness relief to pensioners will be effective from January 01, 2023.This increase is in accordance with the accepted formula, which is based on the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission.

NEW DELHI, MAR 24 (PTI): Leaders of almost all opposition parties on Friday rallied around Rahul Gandhi, after he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha following his conviction by a Gujarat court, and accused the BJP of doing “vindictive politics.”

The Congress said it will fight the battle legally and politically for its former president. It was supported in its protest by parties such as TMC, AAP, Samajwadi Party, DMK, and BRS, which had earlier said they would maintain equal distance from both the BJP and the Congress.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose party, TMC, has been at odds with the Congress over remarks made by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and has been absent in opposition marches held over the last few weeks, too reacted strongly against Gandhi’s disqualification.

One more police station area has been brought under the ambit of the AFSPA through the fresh notification.

Caging Rahul

hether or not Rahul is a politician or even fit to be called one, is no longer important but whether he only did his duty as a conscientious politician to raise his voice raised against those allegedly involved in dubious, shady and corrupt acts, regardless of inviting consequences? Rahul himself in a spot for a campaign remark he made in Karnataka at a rally on April 13, 2019 where he asked : “Why does every thief have the Modi surname- Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi.?”However, response was not long in coming when a defamation complaint was filed on April 15 , 2019 by former Gujarat minister and BJP MLA from Surat West Purnesh Modi. Purnesh in 2019 said since he he’s an MLA and a social worker, his social reputation has suffered an ‘irreparable loss’ because or Rahul’s remark. Though Purnesh was nowhere in Rahul’s radar and legally unconnected with the remark, yet he maintained he was personally hurt and defamed. For speaking out candidly and boldly albeit in his inimitably unprofessionally boyish style, Rahul has been convicted in a criminal defamation to two years in prison by Surat court Chief Judicial Magistrate H H Verma.

The Lok Sabha lost little time with a swift reaction to disqualify Rahul from membership of the Lok Sabha. Nirav Modi is a fugitive Indian diamond tycoon while Lalit Modi another fugitive in London, is a former chief of the Indian Premier League banned for life by the country’s cricket board.

Rahul accused prime minister Modi of favouritism and price escalation in the Dassault Rafale deal.

Rahul clarified that he made the comment to highlight corruption and it was not directed against any community. It has long been expected the government would tighten the noose around Rahul as he has been firing salvoes at Modi on every occasion. Rahul touched a raw nerve of the government when he posed uncomfortable questions about the meteoric rise of corporate honcho Gautam Adani during the past eight years since the coming to power of prime minister Narendra Modi. He cited instances where rules were bent to facilitate take over of various assets by the Adani group and also tailoring India’s foreign policy to suit the group. The government also rejected outright any suggestion for a JPC probe into details of how the Adani group was favoured by the government with several deals.

The conviction of Rahul and his disqualification from parliament only served to vindicate the charges he made both within and outside parliament. Rahul accused the ruling BJP of attacking democratic institutions, being intolerant to critics of the government and curtailing the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression. If Rahul could be convicted for a remark, then those made even by the prime minister and many other ministers deserve no less treatment if the law is to be fair. Unfortunately, today it has become an anti-national act to criticise the government and its leaders. The conviction and disqualification of Rahul may have served to galvanise the entire opposition for the time being. Rahul may be caged and down but not out since he can draw the ‘sympathy factor’ but the moot point is -whether it will be enough for the opposition to come together ahead of 2024?

One day that person will say to us, “You are a thief; you stole my desire to follow Jesus, and because of you I lost sight of Him.” Beware of rejoicing with someone over the wrong thing, but always look to rejoice over the right thing. “…the friend of the bridegroom…rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:29-30). This was spoken with joy, not with sadness— at last they were to see the Bridegroom! And John said this was his joy. It represents a stepping aside, an absolute removal of the servant, never to be thought of again.

Listen intently with your entire being until you hear the Bridegroom’s voice in the life of another person. And never give any thought to what devastation, difficulties, or sickness it will bring. Just rejoice with godly excitement that His voice has been heard. You may often have to watch Jesus Christ wreck a life before He saves it (see Matthew 10:34).

t has been two years since the military coup in Southeast Asia’s Myanmar. The military junta came to power after overthrowing the democratically elected government on charges of corruption. Myanmar has been under the leadership of the country’s military chief Min Aung Hlaing since February 1, 2021. For more than two years, the military government has repressed the people’s movement and protest demanding democracy. According to various international organizations, at least 2,000 people have been killed and more than 15,000 arrested in the junta’s crackdown; At least another 1 million have been displaced. Even then, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has not seen any role in the beleaguered country.

The people of Myanmar may be in solidarity with their Ukrainian brethren, but they have every reason to be infuriated by the contrasting response from the inter national community to the crisis they face at home.

ternational reaction to the bloody military takeover in Myanmar one year ago has been half-hearted by comparison.

There is a degree of racism. The West is quick to defend a fellow and easily identifiable Western state. In part, it speaks to diaspora politics in the West, given the presence of Ukrainian communities in the U.S. and across Europe, something Myanmar does not enjoy to the same extent.

The types of Russian weapons used in Ukraine are also killing people in Myanmar, an independent United Nations expert has said, urging countries at the UN to form a coalition — as they had done after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine — to put pressure on Myanmar’s military rulers. UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, said that a coalition of countries should target Myanmar’s military with sanctions and an arms embargo.

Following the military coup, in April 2021, Myanmar’s pro-democracy and elected representatives formed the National Unity Government (NUG).

They formed a government against the junta and an-

nounced the acceptance of the mandate of the ICC. The ICC also recognized the declaration. The NUG originally requested the ICC to investigate the junta’s war crimes and crimes against humanity in Myanmar. Because the political leaders know very well that there is no possibility of trial in the courts of that country. And that is why Myanmar, a country of 55 million, is now looking to the international organization in the hope of justice.

But sadly, the ICC is not as active in Myanmar as it is in investigating the crimes committed in Ukraine. This raises the question of many, is the ICC more concerned about the suffering of the West?

Myanmar and Ukraine lend themselves to comparison, but the differences in international response are revealing. Why have many countries in the Indo-Pacific responded more forcefully to Ukraine than to Myanmar? Ye Myo Hein and Lucas Myers argue that the “democracy versus authoritarianism” framing is not persuasive to many regional actors, who are more interested in defending the norms of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally,

their findings expose differences in risk tolerance and interests regarding global order between Russia and China.

Russia-Ukraine recently marked one year of direct conflict. Just a few days after the start of the conflict, the ICC representative went there and started investigating the incident. The International Criminal Court even issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Putin on Friday (March 17) for war crimes. Although the Myanmar conflict has passed twice as long, there is still no ICC activity there.

Political analysts say that since the ICC has recognized the NUG’s declaration, the ICC must send a team of investigators like Ukraine to find the truth and announce a fair trial against the perpetrators. This will increase the transparency of this international organization and make it a place of trust for the affected countries.

But here comes a question. That is, whether the anti-junta NUG government can represent Myanmar at the ICC. According to an analysis published in The Diplomat, a Washington DC-based online news outlet, the Government

of National Unity has the power to make this representation. According to the authors of the analysis, John Daugaard, Chris Gunes, Tommy Thomas, Yuyun Wahuningram and Ralph Wilde, according to domestic law, the NUG is the legitimate government of Myanmar. Because according to the 2008 constitution, these representatives were elected through popular vote in 2020. Thus, they have no chance of being illegitimate even if they are repressed by the junta; Their government formation is completely legal.

On the other hand, the junta seized power through a military coup, in clear violation of Articles 71(a) and 417 of the country’s constitution. These articles contain clear instructions for the impeachment of the President and the imposition of a state of emergency. But according to the rules it was not followed. On the contrary, the military has taken power by force, ignoring the protests of the people and putting the democratically elected people, including the president, in jail.

As a result, analysts say, the military’s seizure of power in this way is completely illegal.

PM launches several initiatives to eliminate TB Khango-led NSCN refutes AR report

VARANASI (UP), MAR 24 (PTI): India’s ideology of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam” is giving the modern world an integrated vision and solutions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday as he launched a series of initiatives to eliminate tuberculosis.

Addressing the ‘One World TB Summit’ on World TB Day, Modi said the country is working to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025 as against the global target of 2030.

“India’s image reflects in its ideology of ‘Vasudev Kutumbkam’ (whole world one family). This old thought is giving the modern world an integrated vision and solutions,” he said.

As G20 president, India chose the theme of ‘One Family, One World, One Future’ based on such beliefs, Modi said.

India is forwarding the vision of ‘One Earth, One Health’ in the world, he said while underlining that India is realising the resolutions of global good with the ‘One

good health though campaigns like Khelo India and Yoga,” he said. Another major resolution of India is to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025 as against the global target of 2030, Modi said.

Referring to the capacity and health infrastructure enhancement during the Covid pandemic, Modi underlined the high use of trace, test, track, treat and technology in the fight against the disease.

There is massive global potential in this local approach of India, said the prime minister.

Noting that 80 per cent of tuberculosis medicines are made in India, he said, “I would like that more and more countries get the benefit of all such campaigns, innovations and modern technology of India.”

Modi said the country launched a unique campaign to fight the disease.

“We had called upon the people of the country to make ‘Ni-kshay Mitra’ to join the campaign of TB-free India. After the campaign, 10 lakh TB patients have been adopted by the common citizens. You would be surprised to know that in our country even 1012 year old children are taking forward the fight against TB by becoming Ni-kshay Mitra,” he said.

“There are many such children who broke their piggy banks and adopted TB patients. The financial support of these Ni-kshay friends for TB patients has reached above one thousand crore rupees,” he said, adding Indians living abroad have also become a part of

this effort.

The prime minister said since 2018, about Rs 2,000 crore has been sent directly to the bank accounts of tuberculosis patients and about 75 lakh patients have benefited from it.

“It is difficult to get new results by following the old approach. Started working on a new strategy to ensure that no TB patient is left out of treatment. For testing TB patients, the number of labs has been increased and special plans are made for those where TB patients are more,” he said.

The prime minister said it is a matter of pride that the summit is being organised in Varanasi, which he represents in the Lok Sabha.

No matter the obstacle, Kashi has always proved that new ways are created with ‘Sabka Prayas (everyone’s effort)’, he said while expressing confidence that Kashi will usher new energy towards global resolutions in the fight against a disease like tuberculosis.

The group also claimed that security forces even ignored CFMG/CFSB office order given to NSCN for “smooth passage” of shifting CFSB office.

According to MIP, the Ceasefire Ground Rules Clause B “clearly states” that ground rules will be subject to the two entities and any contentious issues to be resolved jointly by CFSB and CFMG/CFSB. However, MIP said the security forces “trying to hijack” the agreed ceasefire ground rules was “highly objectionable.”

According to MIP, the situations could have been escalated had chairman CFMG/ CFSB office not intervened on time. It said the intervention of DCP Chumukedima help calmed the escalated situation.

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 24 (PTI): A phone recovered from an aide of Amritpal Singh carries pictures of the flag, emblem and currency of “Khalistan” and videos of firearms practice by young men allegedly picked for the radical preacher’s Anandpur Khalistan Fauz, Punjab Police said on Friday.

The incriminating material shows the “sinister designs” of this nascent militia force and the enormous threat they would have become for “peace and harmony of Punjab and national security”, a statement by police in Khanna district said.

While the pro-Khalistan preacher has eluded police since it began a crackdown against him and his

The phone seized after the arrest Wednesday of Tejinder Singh Gill alias Gorkha Baba (42) of village Mangewal held pictures that revealed the design of the flag and the emblem of “Khalistan” and the logos for its proposed provinces, police said.

Khanna’s Senior Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal said the mobile phone also had pictures of an AKF hologram and Khalistan currency, including a “10 dollar” note. There was also a picture of a Pakistani national’s driving licence.

Even before the crackdown began, Amritpal Singh was being likened to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, whose followers carried out a violent campaign for Khalistan – a separate Sikh state – in the 1980s.

The arrested man was a member of the Anandpur Khalsa Fauj (AKF), being raised by Amritpal Singh to wage an armed struggle for the formation of a separate Khalistan state, a police statement said.

He came in contact with Amritpal Singh through one Birkamjit Singh Khalsa, whom he had met during the farmers’ agitation on the outskirts of Delhi.

He went to the preacher’s native village Jallupur Khera in Amritsar district five months back and was inducted as his gunman. Baba was given weapons marked AKF and firing practice was conducted at a makeshift range at the village.

Police said he was in close proximity of Amritpal Singh during last month’s storming of the Ajnala police station by the preacher and his supporters to secure the release of an arrested man.

MUMBAI, MAR 24 (PTI): The Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will meet six times in the next financial year.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rate setting panel will be holding its first meeting of the next fiscal from April 3-6, the central bank said in a statement.

The RBI Governor announces the bi-monthly monetary policy after MPC’s deliberations on the prevailing domestic and economic situations. The meetings are held over three days. According to the schedule released by the RBI on Friday, the first bi-monthly monetary policy of FY2023-24 is scheduled for April 3, 5 and 6; and next will be held during June 6-8. The third, fourth and fifth meetings have been scheduled for August 8-10, October 4-6, and December 6-8. The sixth bi-monthly meeting of the MPC is scheduled to be held on February 6-8, 2024.

He pointed out that the available budgetary allocations for investigations were inadequate and opined that proper proposals with appropriate justification could be made in this regard.

Paton said combating drug trafficking also required investment in investigation, investigation techniques and FSL facilities.

With spurt in registration of cases pertaining to drug trafficking, Patton said none of the FSLs in the Northeast were willing to accept Nagaland’s samples for examination, leading to delays, while additional fund was incurred as the samples sent to Gujarat for testing costs Rs 5,000 each, besides travelling costs of officers. NEW DELHI, MAR 24 (PTI): The government will introduce new technologies including GPS-based toll collection systems in the next 6 months to replace existing highway toll plazas in the country, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday.

The move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and charging motorists for the exact distance travelled on the highways, Gadkari said. Addressing an event organised by industry body CII, Gadkari further said state- owned NHAI’s toll revenue is currently Rs 40,000 crore and it is going to soar to Rs 1.40 lakh crore 2-3 years. “The government is looking at new technologies including GPS-based toll systems to replace toll plazas in the country...We will bring new technology in six months,” he said.

He claimed that steps have been initiated to improve infrastructure, logistics, FSL, etc, and CCTVs installed at police stations and operationalised. He admitted that though new equipment were being purchased, the overall availability of equipment was not adequate to meet the current requirements.

Because of the hilly terrain and poor road conditions, he said police vehicles required regular repairs and replacements and admitted that the police faced constraints in terms of mobility, which affected their response time to situations.

China rolls over $2bn deposits to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, MAR 24 (IANS): China has granted a rollover of $2 billion State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) deposits to Pakistan for one year, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed. It was one of the requirements of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for getting the rollover of Chinese SAFE deposits for meeting external financing needs in order to move towards striking the muchawaited staff-level agreement, The News reported.

WASHINGTON, MAR 24 (IANS): Five cars of a freight train derailed in Ayer of the US state of Massachusetts. The Ayer Fire Department said emergency crews responded to a report of a train derailment shortly before Thursday noon. Five derailed cars were found.

The train was not carrying any hazardous material, Xinhua news agency reported. Personnel of CSX, a freight railroad company operating in North America, on the spot “confirmed that the cars are sealed and are carrying trash/recycling material”.

IMF urges Lebanon to speed up financial reforms

China renews alert for severe convection weather

B E I J I N G, M A R 2 4 (IANS): China’s National Meteorological Centre on Friday renewed an alert for severe convection weather in parts of the country.

From Friday morning to Saturday morning, thunderstorms and hail will strike parts of Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangdong provinces, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Xinhua news agency reported citing the Centre as saying.

Heavy rainfall will hit southern areas of the country, and some places will see up to 60 mm of hourly precipitation, it added.

Heavy rains t r i g ge r e d d e s t r u c t ive floods on Thursday evening, which partially damaged or utterly destroyed more than 300 houses and 3,000 acres of farmlands in Zari district of the northern Balkh province and its vicinity, Waziri told reporters, Xinhua news agency repor ted. A

team of inter national scientists have identified new bat species native to the UK that carry Covid-like virus, and may be just a few mutations away from infecting humans.

The scientists, including from the Imperial College London and University of Nottingham, screened for coronaviruses 48 faecal samples from 16 of the 17 bat species breeding in the UK. They recovered nine (two novel) complete genomes across six bat species: Four alpha coronaviruses, an MERS-related betacoronavirus, and four closelyrelated sarbecoviruses (a subgroup of coronavirus).

The four sarbecovirus genomes were recovered from two distinct horseshoe bat species, R. ferrumequinum and R. hipposideros.

Horseshoe bats (Rhinolophidae) are considered the reservoir of many zoonotic viruses - which jump from animals to people including the close relatives of the viruses that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome and Covid-19.

RhGB01 is linked with both SARS-CoV-2 (responsible for the current pandemic) and SARSCoV (responsible for the initial 2 0 0 3

SARS outbreak in humans).

The study “demonstrated that RhGB07 can bind and use the human ACE2 receptor for infecting human cells”, the researchers wrote in the yet to be peer-reviewed paper, published on a pre-print website.

ACE2 receptor is the entry point for the Covid virus to get into the human body and infect a wide range of human cells.

However, the binding affinity of RhGB07 spike to the human ACE2 receptor was found to be approximately 17-fold lower than that to SARS-CoV-2 spike.

“We provided evidence that at least one sarbecovirus

isolated from UK horseshoe bats can bind human ACE2 receptors in vitro,” they noted.

“But our findings indicate that the RhGB01-like viruses likely require further adaptations, particularly in their spike proteins, before they can make a zoonotic jump,” the researchers said.

I n addit i o n , the spike proteins of these sarbecoviruses are just one mutation away from a furin cleavage site (FCS) that enhances infectivity in other coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2.

“The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019 is a sobering reminder of the massive impact of zoonotic viruses on global health and economy. Despite this, genomic surveillance in wildlife remains limited,” the researchers said.

While in the study,” the UK sarbecoviruses would require further molecular adaptations to infect humans, their zoonotic risk is unknown but warrants closer surveillance,” they added.

He was 67 and his funeral rites shall be performed at the Santacruz Crematorium this afternoon at 4 p.m.

According to his friends and associates, he was rushed to a hospital last night for kidney and related ailments, but failed to survive and breathed his last early this morning.

Prominent Bollywood biggies like Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee, Ashoke Pandit, Nitu ChandraSrivastava, Hansal Mehta,

Neil Nitin Mukesh and others mourned and paid tributes to Sarkar as the news broke out.

Starting his entertainment career with commercials and music videos in the early 1900s, Sarkar debuted as a director with ‘Parineeta’ (2005) starring Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan.

Over the years, he made other films like ‘Laaga Chunari Me Daag’ (2007), ‘Lafangey Pandey’ (2010), ‘Mardaani’ (2014), ‘Helicopter Eela’ (2016), and co-edited the superhit Vidhu Vinod Chopra film ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ (2003).

Simsim is an Indian startup, which the streaming giant acquired in mid2021, reports TechCrunch.

Simsim was founded in 2019 by Amit Bagaria, Kunal Suri, and Saurabh Vashishtha. Through influencer-based videos in Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali, it assisted small businesses in making the transition to e-commerce.

Creators post video reviews about products from local businesses, and viewers can buy those products directly through the app.

YouTube acquired Simsim in a deal that val-

ued the company at over $70 million, according to the report.

At the time, YouTube stated that the acquisition will allow the video streaming giant to assist small businesses and retailers in India in reaching new customers in even more powerful ways.

Because of this, athletes, officials and supporting personnel from Russia and Belarus are still excluded from competition for the foreseeable future due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The decision was taken during the World Athletics Council meeting held in Monaco on Thursday.

The Council approved the Russia Taskforce’s recommendation that RusAF, which has been suspended for seven years due to doping, be reinstated after meeting all the requirements of the Reinstatement plan, which has been confirmed by an independent audit.

However, RusAF will be required to comply with a set of 35 ‘Special Conditions’ that are intended to ensure that RusAf ’s anti-

doping reforms remain in place and continue to operate effectively.

These Special Conditions are designed to enable the Athletics Integrity Unit to monitor, evaluate, communicate, mentor, oversee, and assist RusAF and its external stakeholders to ensure they maintain good governance practices and to protect RusAF from external pressures and attempts to influence or control its functioning. They focus on four areas: organisational good governance, protection from inappropriate external influence and control, operational capability and capacity (with a particular emphasis on ethical and anti-doping requirements, and change in the regions), and budget allocation and fiscal management.

These Special Condi-

tions are intended to be applied for three years, with a review at the end of that period to determine whether or not it is necessary to maintain those conditions (as they are or with variations) for a further period, the World Athletics informed in a release on Thursday night.

Further, the Athletics Integrity Unit has determined that RusAF should be categorised as a Category ‘A’ member federation after its reinstatement. That means that RusAF will have to comply not only with the general obligations applicable to all member federations but also with the special obligations applicable to Category ‘A’ member federations like being subjected to greater scrutiny and more testing requirements.

The Taskforce confirmed that RusAF has paid all of the costs of the reinstatement process until the end of 2022. World Athletics will invoice RusAF in early April for the costs incurred by it in January-March, and the prompt payment of that invoice will be one of the Special Conditions.

DA Y T O N A B E A C H (FLORIA), MAR 24 (AP): The LPGA Tour says the Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA tournament is being cancelled for the fourth consecutive year, citing operational factors.

The LPGA said the decision was reached mutually with the Swinging Skirts Golf Foundation, which has sponsored the event since 2014, when it was first played in California.

The tournament had been scheduled for Oct. 2629, the third of four events in Asia.

The Taiwan tournament and other Asian events were cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and issues related to the pandemic and travel restrictions led to cancellation in Taiwan the following three years.

Rushab, despite being born into a motorsports family, took up other sports after being initiated into karting at a young age.

Rushab crashed in the first race of the last round where he was fighting for third place in the Expert class before he suffered highside fighting with his championship rival.

Later, he braved an injury in the second race, on the same day, to finish a creditable fourth overall after starting from P13, and he bulldozed his way to clinch a fine victory in his class. The winning hurrah has ‘created hunger’ in him and he is looking to return to Dubai again this year.

FIFA sets May 2024 date to pick 2027 Women’s World Cup host

ZURICH, MAR 24 (AP): FIFA set a timeline to pick the 2027 Women’s World Cup host, giving would-be candidates one month to join the contest ahead of a vote in May next year.

Brazil, South Africa and a co-hosting project by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany have previously said they want to bid for the tournament.

FIFA said its ruling council — a 37-member global group chaired by the governing body’s president Gianni Infantino — will select up to three bids late in the campaign for a vote by more than 200 member federations.

The decision will be made at the FIFA Congress on May 17 next year at a venue not yet announced.

FIFA set key dates Thursday leading to the vote, starting with an April 21 deadline for member federations to register interest in bidding.

They should attend the 2023 tournament in July and August, being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, and file formal bids with FIFA by Dec. 8.

The FIFA Council will appoint an evaluation panel to visit and assess the bids before publishing reports on them before the vote.

FIFA committed to “respecting internationally recognized human rights” in all “activities in connection with bidding for and hosting” the tournament.

Gifts of only “symbolic or trivial value” can be offered on behalf of bid campaigns, FIFA said, and must not be linked to any commitment of support or create a conflict of interest.

The tournament is likely to have 32 teams playing a total of 64 games, though FIFA has not confirmed the tournament format.
