Oppn-less Govt: focus on Naga pol solution and ENPO demand

KOHIMA, MAR 12 (NPN): Close on the heels of the swearing-in of the 12-member PDA 2.0 alliance led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio which was followed by the appointment of 24 elected members from both NDPP and BJP, barring one NDPP member- there are speculations of the ‘expected’ formation of the third oppositionless government is gaining ground.

Nagaland Post on its March 4 issue reported on opinions of several nonNDPP and non-BJP parties that the recently elected members who will be take oath as members of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, were expecting to be part of the formation of the third opposition-less government.

NDPP with 25 and BJP with 12 elected members are in absolute majority with 37 in a house of 60. NDPP increased its tally from 18 in 2018 to 25 in 2023 while the BJP won the same number of 12 seats both in 2018 and 2023.

While NDPP functionaries remained tight lipped

about an opposition-less government, BJP appeared less enthusiastic especially with regard to NCP as the latter is not part of NDA. The NPP is part of BJP-led NEDA headed by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The LJP and RPI are also part of NDA at the Centre. The JD(U) which won one seat in Nagaland was dissolved when party unit expressed support to Rio without obtaining approval of the national leaders.

Even if not an ideal situation the opposition-less government has been justified on the basis of getting all MLAs and society including Naga stakeholders on board especially since solution including ENPO issue is likely to dominate the political landscape in the next coming months. Leaders of parties which have expressed support

to the Rio-led coalition government include: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by founder-president Sharad Pawar with 7 members; National People’s Party led by its national president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangama with 5 members; JD (U) with one member, NPF, Lok Jan Shakti (Ram Vilas), Republican Party of India (Ramdas Athwale) with 2 members each and 4 Independents, have expressed support to the coalition government.

Even though the nonPDA parties have 23 elected members, they have shown no inclination to form a postpoll opposition alliance. This is because most of the elected members of several parties are considered close associates of either chief minister Neiphiu Rio or ticket aspirants of BJP. (Cont’d on p-8)

Centre opposes same sex marriage at Supreme Court NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): Ahead of a Supreme Court hearing on the legalisation of same sex marriages, the move had received vehement opposition from the Centre. The government said that such a move would not be ‘comparable with the Indian family unit’. Centre opined that same-sex relationships and heterosexual relationships are clearly distinct classes which cannot be treated identically.

Centre said that marriage was recognised “statutorily, religiously and socially” as a union between a man and a woman. It added that the heterogeneous institution of marriage was also accepted by

the Indian society based upon its own cultural and societal values which are recognized by the competent legislature.

“There is an intelligible differentia (normative basis) which distinguishes those within the classification (heterosexual couples) from those left out (same-sex couples).

This classification has a rational relation with the object sought to be achieved (ensuring social stability via recognition of marriages),” it said. Centre said that despite the decriminalization of Sec 377 of the IPC, the petitioners “cannot claim a fundamental right for same-sex marriage to be recognised under the laws of the country”.

Heroin worth Rs 30 cr seized along Nagaland border Correspondent

DIPHU, MAR 12: In its continued fight against trafficking of drugs and other narcotics, Karbi Anglong Police on Sunday seized 5 kg heroin worth Rs 30 crore from a vehicle in Khatkhati area. The vehicle was enroute Nagaon from Dimapur. Police claimed that the consignment was concealed and packed in 390 soap cases.

“The consignment was concealed by making a secret chamber in upper part of the vehicle’s body. The secret chamber was welded properly to hide the consignment,” SDPO Bokajan John Das told the media.

Based on specific input, the police set up a naka along the highway near SBI Khatkhati branch and intercepted the white Bolero (AS 09 J 4746) that was coming from Dimapur around 10 a.m. Police arrested the driver Mohammad Fujel Ahmed (41), resident of Islam Nagar, Hojai district Assam. Upon interrogation, the police claimed that Fujel confessed that the consignment from Dimapur was supposed to be dropped in a particular place near the Nagaon bypass.

Assembly poll results in 3 NE states set the tone for 2024

AGARTALA, MAR 12 (IANS): The recent assembly elections in the three northeastern states - Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland - has set the tone for next year’s parliamentary elections with as the BJP has consolidated its position and the Congress trying to revive.

Ahead of the assembly polls in three northeastern states, there was no Congress legislator in Meghalaya and Nagaland and was a lone MLA in Tripura.

In the assembly polls, Congress secured five seats in Meghalaya against 21 in 2018 and three in Tripura while the party, like in 2018 assembly polls, could not open its account in Nagaland. The three states have 60 seats each in the assemblies. The Congress drew blank in 2018 polls in Tripura.

Though BJP and its allies came to power in three states, their vote and seat share remained the same or less in the polls compared to the 2018 polls.

The saffron party in Nagaland and Meghalaya secured 12 and two seats both in 2018 and 2023 polls respectively. In Tripura, the

party this time bagged 32 seats, four seats less than the 2018 assembly polls.

Of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the eight North Eastern states, the BJP has 14 seats and the Congress has four. While the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF in Assam), Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP in Nagaland), Mizo National Front (MNF in Mizoram), National People’s Party (NPP in Meghalaya), Naga People’s Front (NPF in Manipur), Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM in Sikkim) and Independent (in Assam) have one seat each.

The ruling BJP is the dominant party in the alliance government in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura while the saffron party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners -- Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Mizo

National Front (MNF) and National People’s Party (NPP) lead governments in Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya respectively.

Since 1952, the northeastern states had been a stronghold of the Congress but over the years the party lost its organisational base leading to the emergence of the BJP and several regional parties.

Eying 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the Congress like previous efforts, has started to form a ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) with the likeminded parties.

The Cong ress on Thursday in Guwahati held a meeting of 10 opposition parties excluding Lok Sabha member and leading Muslim leader Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress.

ENNG chief along with 14 others surrender

I TA NAG A R , M A R 1 2 (IANS): A total of 15 militants belonging to Eastern Naga National Government (ENNG) led by its president Tosha Mossang surrendered to the Arunachal Pradesh government and deposited a huge cache of arms and ammunition at a function on Sunday.

The militants, active in the state’s three eastern districts of Tirap, Changlang, and Longding, laid down their arms at a ‘Homecoming Ceremony’ at the state police headquarters in presence of chief minister Pema Khandu.

Addressing the function, Khandu said that the Central

government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, is committed to bring all misguided persons, who have taken up arms against the establishment for one or other reason, back to the mainstream and provide them with a normal and better life.

“Violence is no solution to any problem. Peace, dialogue and commitment are the solution to every problem,” he said.

Welcoming the “misguided” militants, he said that with their joining the mainstream would inspire those still underground to shun the path of violence and terror.

GUWAHATI, MAR 12 (PTI): The Assam government will acquire 179 bighas (59 acres) of land allotted to 17 institutions that will be evicted from Silsako Beel (lake) in Guwahati, an official order stated.

The institutions to be evicted include Tata Group’s Ginger hotel, apex literary body Asam Sahitya Sabha and residential units of the state assembly and Doordarshan Kendra. The state government faced flak from the public and opposition during a recent eviction drive at the lake.

After the acquisition process is over, the buildings

will be demolished like many structures were brought down for several days since February 27 by the Kamrup Metropolitan District authorities.

Some other institutions whose legally allotted land will be acquired are Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development-- an autonomous research institute of ICSSR and Government of Assam, and the Chilarai Bhawan of All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Sanmilani.

Land parcels given to All Assam Tennis Association for a tennis complex, Asam Sahitya Sabha, National Institute of TV and Theatre, one vet-

erinary hospital, and Assam Assembly and Doordarshan Kendra for building residential quarters for their staffers will also be cleared. The list of 17 institutions also contains several schools, one college and land allotted to Asom Saah Shramik Kalyan Parishad.

During the recent eviction drive in the heart of the capital city, scores of houses, offices and shops were pulled down. Most of the people affected in this drive are from indigenous communities such as Bodo, Mising, Karbi, Ahom and Bishnupriya Manipuri among others.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Aotoshi spoke on the importance of Dandi March. He reminded that the historic event Dandi March that took place on March 12, 1930 with 78 followers.

He said that when many have started dismissing Gandhi, it was heartening to see youth of the academia coming together to awaken the spirit of Gandhi.

Many entrepreneurs in Arunachal Not happy as MLA, says Akhil Gogoi showing interest in bamboo products

GUWAHATI, MAR 12 (PTI): Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi, who became a sensation in the state by winning Assembly polls from jail in 2021, on Sunday said he is not happy being a legislator and missed his activist days, when the former peasant leader could raise “people’s issues” more “directly and strongly”.

The first-time MLA from Sibsagar constituency also claimed that he is alone in criticising and protesting the “anti-people” decisions of the government as other opposition parties have become “silent”. “I am not happy with this post of MLA. I am an activist. I fight against all anti-people activities of the central as well as the state government,” Gogoi told PTI in an interview. Raijor Dal, Gogoi’s political party, has been fighting against various issues such as corporatisation of resources, what he claimed was a “fascist” atmosphere, and “communal

“In the Assam Assembly, I am the only (one in) opposition who fights against this government. We have 51 opposition MLAs. But many in the opposition voted in favour of BJP in the Rajya Sabha and Presidential elections.”

When pointed out that there were allegations that he had voted for BJP during the President’s election, the

Independent MLA denied the charge and claimed that he has been fighting against the “BJP’s communal and casteist politics all along”.

Gogoi had star ted his social life by starting the peasant organisation Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and raised a series of issues relating to the farmers’ livelihood and settlement for almost two decades.

He had filed a number of RTI applications and court cases on a range of issues, including land rights, and exposed a number of scams in Assam.

The for mer KMSS leader and his group had also organised protests and agitations, including against NHPC’s 2,000 MW Subansiri hydro power project, Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and toll gates on National Highways, across the state.

“I fought against all the concepts of the central Government and BJP. I think

all the opposition MLAs are not fighting against this government strongly. I am alone fighting boldly,” Gogoi asserted.

“In all the sessions, I always fight against the communal spirit. In Assam, there are some anti-Constitutional, anti-democratic work … like the ‘fake encounters’ and eviction of minority people (from settlements which have been declared illegal by the state),” Gogoi alleged.

When asked if he will contest again in 2026, the Raijor Dal chief pointed out that election is a medium through which he can spread his ideology.

“It’s a question of democracy and I shall definitely fight the 2026 elections against this government,” he added. Gogoi expressed reluctance to give a direct reply to a query on his chances of winning in the 2026.

“See, I am not a professional politician … I am a simple man and I always

fight against communalism and fascism. We are trying to restore the values of the Indian Constitution and democracy.

“So, this question of winning or not winning is not a question for me,” he said. Gogoi was arrested by the NIA in December 2019 for his alleged role in violent anti-CAA protests across the state. The NIA was investigating two cases against Gogoi and three of his associates related to anti-CAA violence.

While in jail, he formed Raijor Dal, contested 2021 Assembly polls as an Independent candidate from Sibsagar seat and won, defeating BJP’s Surabhi Rajkonwari by a decisive 11,875 votes.

Gogoi became the first Assamese to win an election while behind bars without any physical campaigning.

He also became the first in Assam Assembly to take oath as a MLA, while still a prisoner.

ITANAGAR, MAR 12 (PTI): For Nyapi Doni, selecting a new business after closing her poultry and piggery units, was a risky affair. But her grit and determination paved the way to overcome the risk factor and today she is an established bamboo entrepreneur in Arunachal Pradesh.

The bamboo industry in the northeastern state could be a money spinner, if its potential can be exploited, as the state boasts of having 74 species of the grass species, literally known as the ‘green gold’.

Doni, who started her ‘Arunachal Bamboo’ industry in 2019 after leaving aside her poultry and piggery units, now earns more than 50,000 per month by selling her wide range of bamboo products including, furniture, home utility items and jewellery items.

With growing demands for bamboo in the country, many entrepreneurs

in Arunachal Pradesh are evincing keen interest to bamboo-based industries for its high-end value products with less investment.

“Bamboo industry is more comfortable and lucrative than other businesses as bamboo products with indigenous touch are a craze among the people,” Doni, who owns a large bamboo plantation, said.

She claimed that furniture and home utility items produced in her unit are in high demand. “Recently my unit has constructed all the furniture and utility items for a restaurant in the state capital. We have also designed the interiors of the restaurant with traditional designs made of treated bamboo which will last for over 20 years,” she added.

Another lady entrepreneur Techi Anna, who owns the Poma Cane and Bamboo Industry near here, revealed that her efforts were to popularize the unique bamboo

products of the state in other parts of the country.

“The unique products of my unit are bamboo plates and bowls which are being produced through bamboo coil technique. We are also producing furniture, home utility items besides jewellery which are available in our showroom at Itanagar,” Anna said.

Anna earns around Rs 80,000 on an average per month. However, the sale proceeds sometimes exceed two lakhs especially, during exhibitions where her unit put stalls. The North East Council had sanctioned an amount of Rs 50 lakh to Anna’s industry for construction of a work shed, where many artisans are being imparted training.

Anna said the artisans of the state, if provided quality training and the industrial units purchased the latest machinery, the state too could produce superior quality products.

Four TN fishermen arrested by SL Navy

CHENNAI, MAR 12 (IANS): Four fishermen from Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for trespassing into their waters. The arrest was made at 4.30 a.m. on Sunday. The arrested were taken to the Sri Lankan Naval base at Paruthithurai in the island nation for further questioning.

The arrested fishermen are L. Arokiaraj (54), A. Ashok (28), A. Karuppu (22) and S. Sakthi (21).

All the arrested are from Kottaipattanam coastal village in Pudukottai district. The fishermen from Pudukottai had sailed from Kottaipattanam fishing harbour on Saturday morning. The Coastal Security Group sources told IANS that the arrested were fishing about 30 nautical miles near ‘Alai Theevu’. They were intercepted by the Sri Lankan Navy. They were charged for trespassing into Sri Lankan waters and an investigation is on.

A senior Customs official said that arrests were made on March 10. “The three foreign nationals arrived at Mumbai Airport from Addis Ababa. They were intercepted on the basis of intelligence inputs. Gold was found to be concealed in their undergarments and in sole of their footwear,” said the official.

LATUR, MAR 12 (PTI): A 60-year-old man was bludgeoned to death by an unidentified person in Maharashtra’s Latur city on Sunday, police said.

The police have detained a 22-year-old suspect in connection with the killing that took place in Gandhi market area in the early hours of the day, an official said. The victim, who slept in the market complex, was bludgeoned to death with a stone and his body was found by locals in the morning, he said. The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained and the police are in the process of registering a case, the official said.

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (IANS): A total of 3,038 labconfirmed cases of various subtypes of influenza including H3N2 have been reported till March 9 by the states, as per the latest data available on IDSP-IHIP (Integrated Health Information Platform). This includes 1,245 cases in January; 1,307 in February and 486 cases till March 9.

A real-time sur veillance of cases of Influenza like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) presenting in OPDs and IPDs of health facilities is undertaken by Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Apart from H3N2 influenza, two other important circulating influenza are Influenza A H1N1, Influenza B Victoria.

The ICMR data, however, reports a combination of respiratory viruses ranging from Covid-19 virus, swine flu (H1N1), H3N2, and the

seasonal Victoria and Yamagata lineages of influenza B viruses, as responsible.

Meanwhile, the Covid infection has also reported a spike after four months as daily Covid cases were reported 524 on Sunday.

An integrated surveillance of Influenza like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) for the detection of human influenza virus and SARS-COV-2 virus is ongoing through structured ILI/SARI surveillance network of 28 sites, an official said.

During the period of first nine weeks of this year, the surveillance network has monitored the human influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 infection in SARI and ILI cases.

“The IDSP-IHIP data from health facilities indicate that during the month of January 2023, a total of 397,814 cases of Acute Respiratory Illness/Influenza Like Illness (ARI/ILI) were reported from the country that increased slightly to 436,523 during February, 2023. In the first 9 days of March 2023, this number stands at 133,412 cases,” the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The weekly data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reveals that H3N2 has of late taken the lead pushing Covid-19 aside. Besides, of the samples

1 held in J&K for killing woman, chopping body into pieces: Police SRINAGAR, MAR 12 (PTI): A man has been arrested for allegedly killing a woman, chopping her body into several pieces and burying the body parts at different locations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district, police said on Sunday.

He added that on March 8, the Soibugh police post received an application from Tanveer Ahmad Khan, a resident of the Soibugh area of the central Kashmir district, stating that his sister left for coaching classes on March 7, but did not return home. A missing report was registered and a probe launched, the police spokesperson said.

During the course of

the investigation, police rounded up several suspects, including Shabir Ahmad Wani, a resident of Mohandpora Budgam.

After sustained questioning, Ahmad confessed to his involvement in the commission of the crime, the police spokesperson said. The accused told police that he had chopped the victim’s body into several pieces and buried the body parts at different locations, he added.

Following Ahmad’s disclosure, the body parts were recovered, the police spokesperson said, adding that the medico-legal formalities are underway and further investigation is on.

A five-member delegation of the joint forum of state government employees, the umbrella organisation spearheading the movement in the matter, met the Bose at Governor House on Sunday morning.

Emerging out of the meeting, the delegation members claimed that the Governor has assured them that if the state government agrees, he is ready to play the role of a mediator on this count.

On late Saturday evening, Bose from his official Twitter handle sent an appeal to state government employees to withdraw at least their fasting agitation.

Re-kindling animosity

T

here have been several incidents particularly along the Assam-Nagaland border covering Sivasagar and Mokokchung districts during the past few years and the latest being two incidents when some forest and police personnel from Assam accompanied by Assam media personnel intruded inside Aosenden village on February 8 when the villagers were cultivating their land. According to Aosenden chairman and secretary, the armed party from Assam took away a car belonging to a member of the village. In order to restore normalcy, it was reported that officials of both Assam and Nagaland held a joint meeting at Chungtiayimsen on February 13 and agreed that the landowners can go ahead with cultivation works in their fields. On this basis, the villagers of Aosenden resumed their cultivation works on March 6. However, while they were busy, some miscreants from Assam side set fire to the jungle even before the clearing was completed for cultivation. Such incidents have become quite frequent and have raised suspicions that there is a conspiracy to create tension in the border between the two states. The reason is that Assam has failed to respect the legitimacy of the traditional boundary of the peoples of the states with which it has disputes.Assam bases its claim over the colonial boundary after independence and dismissing the legitimate claims of people (mostly tribals)whose ownership has been even acknowledged by the Ahom kings. The major cause for border disputes has been the arbitrary transfer of tribal lands and forest under districts within the provincial Assam which remained within the state and gradually became legitimate in reasserting the constitutional and political boundary of the states. The British took special interest in Assam mainly for growing tea gardens and extraction of natural resources.

Quite obviously, the simple minded tribal folks were none too adept in the politics or modern methods in convincing the white colonial supremacists about their legitimate and traditional rights over the lands.

All these lands were arbitrarily transferred to Assam purely for administrative convenience such as the 1925 notification issued by the then British colonial government of Assam. As many as 16 boundary line and 6 Inner Line Notifications were issued between 1866 -1923 by British India after the creation of Naga Hills district in 1866 in Samaguting (Chümoükidema) as the first HQ. The boundary lines overlapped each others in some areas creating problems in administration and revenue collections. The frequent shifting of the boundary and the inner lines were done unilaterally mainly to usurp the ancestral virgin forest of the Nagas, which were rich in untapped forest resources and mineral wealth. Knowing its commercial values, besides the fertility of the land for expansion of the tea plantation, the British India had arbitrarily declared Reserved in as many as 22 forest areas(reserve forest) and subsequently transferred to the neighbouring districts of Assam for free commercial exploitation. It is time that Kohima woke up to the alarm bell being rung from the other side of the border and ensure that respect for rule of law is maintained and also issue clear statements to expose any nefarious designs.

It was not for the purpose of what the disciples themselves would get out of it. Beware of surrender that is motivated by personal benefits that may result. For example, “I’m going to give myself to God because I want to be delivered from sin, because I want to be made holy.”

Being delivered from sin and being made holy are the result of being right with God, but surrender resulting from this kind of thinking is certainly not the true nature of Christianity. Our motive for surrender should not be for any personal gain at all. We have become so self-centered that we go to God only for something from Him, and not for God Himself. It is like saying, “No, Lord, I don’t want you; I want myself. But I do want You to clean me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I want to be on display in Your showcase so I can say, ‘This is what God has done for me.’ ” Gaining heaven, being delivered from sin, and being made useful to God are things that should never even be a consideration in real surrender. Genuine total surrender is a personal sovereign preference for Jesus Christ Himself.

Where does Jesus Christ figure in when we have a concern about our natural relationships? Most of us will desert Him with this excuse— “Yes, Lord, I heard you call me, but my family needs me and I have my own interests. I just can’t go any further” (see Luke 9:57-62). “Then,” Jesus says, “you ‘cannot be My disciple’ ” (see Luke 14:26-33).

True surrender will always go beyond natural devotion. If we will only give up, God will surrender Himself to embrace all those around us and will meet their needs, which were created by our surrender. Beware of stopping anywhere short of total surrender to God. Most of us have only a vision of what this really means, but have never truly experienced it.

SVB ruin may hit India, rising costs cut firm profits A

The SVB had been providing finances through SVB India company. It was providing debt capital to domestic high growth companies, which are now pulling out their money from SVB. The bank employs 800. Though Indian exposure to the SVB is low, as it is hitting the financial market, India may have

problems not so much for operational reasons but the overall impact on the international market.

The hit taken may accentuate the fund flow, which RBI has just started feeling comfortable. How it would hit the global situation already in a tizzy due to the Ukraine war remains to be seen.

The SVB has hit at a time when the country has been struggling to come out of lower growth at 4.4 percent in December quarter 2022. The RBI finds that sales of listed private companies record 22.6 percent growth in 2022-23 as compared to 41 percent in the previous quarter and 31.8 in the second quarter.

Operating profit of private manufacturing units contract though it expands for IT and services companies, says the RBI. The inflation adjusted sales are losing growth as per analysis of NSO data. The sales increased by 9 percent in December 2022 against higher volumes at 40.6 percent in June and 20.6 percent in September.

If wages do not rise this can impact growth and new job prospects. This is not considered favourable for future growth amid demand slump.

The RBI is hopeful but has worries. Higher inflation in rural areas is muting spending activities.

Industry is having uneven recovery and exports are hit by global slowdown.

Better capital flows give hopes for a better future if the SVB does not have larger footprint.

Weaker global growth, fraught with SVB type risks, is probability. Inflation may come down in India but it would remain well above targets in most economies.

The SVB crisis may increase inflation with rising finance costs along with geopolitical risks.

India, RBI says, has resilience. Overall domestic conditions are conducive for a turnaround in private investment, and if inflation ebbs, private consumption will firm up.

There is a growing sense that the coming decade will mark India’s ascent on to the world stage.

It is in this context that India’s priorities and deliverables under its G20 presidency assume relevance.

Reinvigoration of global policy cooperation to meet emerging challenges, has to be priority in repairing the multiple fractures to put the global economy on a trajectory that fulfils the G20’s mandate of strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.

Exploiting technology to undermine democracy

recent disconcerting report based on an investigation carried by 30 global media outlets, including the Guardian and DeSpiegel, claims to have exposed a team of freelance units based in Israel, which disrupt elections and manipulate public opinion using disinformation campaigns.

Undercover reporters recorded a group of covert cyber influence specialists as they pitched their services for seeking fresh business, which involve using disinformation campaigns, false intelligence, hacks and blackmail to promote their clients’ interests.

The group, which calls itself ‘Team Jorge’, claims to have worked on dozens of presidential elections around the world and charges multimillion-dollar fees.

Undercover journalists who carried out the investigation included Gur Meggido (The Marker), Frederic Metezeau (Radio France), and Omer Benjakob (Haaretz).

The journalists were part of a collaborative investigation called ‘Story Killers’, which was coordinated by ‘Forbidden Stories’ -- an international consortium of investigative journalists that pursue the work of journalists who have been killed or work under threat.

However, Tal Hanan denies any wrongdoing. But he allegedly told the reporters that his unit’s services were available to intelligence agencies, political campaigns, and private companies, and that many European, African, Americans well as Central and South American clients had already used them around the globe.

Their modus operandi is said to involve creating thousands of fake social media profiles on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Telegram, Gmail, Instagram, and YouTube. These fake accounts, which allegedly used profile pictures from real social media accounts, were also linked to credit cards and could be used to create thousands of bots that sent mass messages.

In one secretly filmed meeting quoted by the Guardian, Hanan is seen boasting that at present his team is now involved in one election in Africa, besides two other teams in Greece and the UAE. Boasting further, he said that his team has so far delivered 33 presidential-level campaigns globally, 27 of which were successful.

Hanan also reportedly boasted to the undercover reporters that he could hack the email and messenger services of election campaigners, and send messages

to their contacts designed to damage their campaign.

The investigators found that Team Jorge’s tech toolbox included “a platform of influence” called Advanced Impact Media Solutions or AIMS, which Hanan claims to have sold to the intelligence services of more than 10 countries. The AIMS software is designed to create convincing avatars for social media campaigns.

The avatars, or bots, use stolen photos of real people, operate on any social media platform, and can be connected to functioning Amazon and Bitcoin accounts.

They also appear to have a longstanding presence online, including Gmail accounts and trite comments on celebrity YouTube videos, to give investigators the impression they are real people.

In this regard Hanan told reporters that they relied successfully on imitating human behaviour.

Though nowadays most online accounts require phone number and email address verification to keep out bots like those deployed by AIMS. But to overcome that there are websites available, which have been set up specifically to allow one-off SMS-verification services, for 50 cents or less. Many accounts such as Gmail and WhatsApp --- can be registered with “verified” phone numbers. Apparently Team Jorge used a service called SMSpva.com for phone number verifications.

Keeping abreast of social media platforms checks, AIMS relied on residential proxies to reroute internet traffic from bots through peoples’ homes so it appeared authentic, in order to avoid detection and shut-downs by social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. This made it difficult for social media platforms to identify a coordinated disinformation campaign.

Verification and analysis of the recorded conversations by reporting partners Le Monde and the Guardian identified clusters of avatars, including those seen in Hanan’s pitch presentations, that appeared to have been used for coordinated Twitter campaigns.

Reporters found over 1,700 Twitter accounts connected to 21 AIMS-related campaigns, whose networks had produced tens of thousands of tweets.

In December last, during a in-person meeting with undercover reporters, Team Jorge showed off a new capability of AIMS: Artificial intelligence tools to generate fake news using specified key words, tone and topic.

The identities of Team Jorge members were shrouded in secrecy but reporters managed to piece together some background information on some members of the clandestine group. Some of it lines up with claims Team Jorge made about team members in calls with journalists.

One team member described his other colleagues as former se-

nior information officers, former senior financial information and warfare experts, and psychological warfare specialists, all with intelligence services background.

Hanan indicated that he had orchestrated lobbying operations in the US despite not registering as a “foreign agent”, as required by law. He said he worked viaconsultants and companies that are already registered, and told reporters he had recently set up a public relations firm called Axiomatics to promote Team Jorge with “existing lobby groups”.

During calls with undercover reporters, Team Jorge went into specifics about the technology they say the group uses to swing elections. They added that they have six offices and employ at least 100 people, emphasising that they draw on the backgrounds of colleagues with experience in the intelligence services. This pushes Team Jorge’s activities far beyond the realm of public relations strategies that are commonly deployed in elections.

As far as the financial pickings are concerned, Team Jorge told the reporters they would accept payments in a variety of currencies, including crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, or cash.

He said he would charge between 6 million euros and 15 million euros for interference in elections.

Old coins, silver ornaments found during construction

JALAUN (UP), MAR 12 (PTI): A metal container filled with 279 coins dating back to 1862 and silver ornaments was recovered during construction of a house in a village here, and handed over to the Archaeological Survey of India, official said on Sunday. The coins and ornaments were recovered on Saturday during excavation for the construction of the house in Vyas Pura village of Kotwali Jalaun.

Man ends life after killing wife, 3 daughters

BURHANPUR, MAR 12 (PTI): A man allegedly killed his wife and three minor daughters before committing suicide in Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur district on Sunday, a police official said. The incident took place in Dabli Khurd village under Nepanagar police station limits, the official added. “It is suspected Manoj (35) strangled his 32-year-old wife and three daughters, in the 3-10 age group, and then committed suicide by hanging. No suicide note has been found.

Six dead in car accident in Maha

BULDHANA, MAR 12 (PTI): Six persons were killed after their car met with an accident on Sunday morning on the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district, a police official said. The accident took place at 8am at Shivni Pisa village when the car, with 13 occupants, was on its way from Aurangabad to Shegaon here, Buldhana Superintendent of Police Sarang Awhad told PTI.

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (PTI): President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday said it is expected that the media would have “complete sensitivity” towards the dignity and safety of women in their advertisements, news and programmes.

In a video message while flagging off an All Women Bike Rally, organised by the Navbharat Times, the president said

that according to the Constitution, it is the duty of every citizen of India to give up such practices which are against the dignity of women.

“To perform this fundamental duty, it is necessary that the thinking of every citizen should be respectful towards women.

The foundation of respectful conduct towards women can be laid in the family

itself,” she said.

Mothers and sisters should inculcate in their sons and brothers the values of giving respect to women and also asked teachers to strengthen the culture of respect and sensitivity towards women among the students, President Murmu said.

“The president said that it is expected from the media that they would have complete sensitivity towards the dignity and safety of women in their advertisements, news and programmes,” according to a statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

She said that despite all the limitations and challenges, women have set new records of success on the strength of their indomitable courage and skill.

recently, officials said, adding that the 1,507 m long platform has been built at a cost of about Rs 20 crore.

Modi at an event here, also dedicated the electrification of Hosapete – Hubballi – Tinaighat section and the upgradation of Hosapete station, for boosting connectivity in the region.

over Rs 530 crore, the electrification project establishes seamless train operation on electric traction. The redeveloped Hosapete station will provide convenient and modern facilities to travellers. It has been designed to resemble the Hampi monuments, officials said.

The PM also inaugurated and laid the founda-

tion stone for various projects of Hubballi-Dharwad smart city. The total estimated cost of these projects is about Rs 520 crores.

He also laid the foundation stone of the Jayadeva Hospital and Research Centre, which will be developed at a cost of about Rs. 250 crores and will provide tertiary cardiac care to the people of the region, and for the Dharwad Multi Village Water Supply Scheme, which will be developed at a cost of over Rs. 1,040 crores.

He also laid the foundation stone for Tupparihalla Flood Damage Control Project, which will be developed at a cost of about Rs 150 crores,officials said.

The project aims to mitigate damage caused by floods and involves construction of retaining walls and embankments.

TMC leader also involved in ‘money for transfer’ racket: ED KOLKATA, MARCH 12 (IANS): Trinamool Congress leader Santanu Bandopadhyay, who is currently in Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody in connection with the multi-crore teachers’ recruitment scam in West Bengal, was also involved in ‘money for transfer’ racket.

The revelation has been made by the investigating ED officials who have secured copies of recommendation letters for transfer of state government employees while conducting raid and search operations at Bandopadhyay’s residence, sources said.

According to them, from examination of related documents it is also clear that there were fixed rates

of payments for transfer depending on the proposed place of transfer, where transfers to Kolkata or its adjacent districts attracted highest payments.

Bandopadhyay, who is also principal nodal officer of Hooghly district Zilla Parishad, will be presented on Monday at a special court of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata where the ED counsel might make an appeal for extension of his central agency custody.

RAJOURI/JAMMU, MAR 12 (PTI): Army troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) recovered small arms and narcotics from Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, officials said. Two pistols, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and heroin was among the recoveries made, they said. They said the recovery was made by the troops from the forward area of Lam in Nowshera sector during an early morning search operation. The operation was still going on and further details were awaited, the officials said.

India-Aus agree to further enhance trade relations

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (IANS): India and Australia on Sunday acknowledged the significance of their trading relations, as bilateral trade exceeded $31 billion during the last financial year.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Australia’s trade minister Don Farrell met to discuss next steps for further enhancing the bilateral economic relationship. They discussed implementation of the economic cooperation and trade agreement (ECTA), negotiations for the India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and further developing twoway investment.

Both the ministers agreed that given the trade complementarities between the two countries, there is considerable potential for significantly enhancing bilateral trade within the next five years. The ministers also discussed engagement in the G20, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

They agreed that Australia and India share high ambition for the IPEF, as

evidenced at the special round of IPEF negotiations in New Delhi, and would continue to work together though IPEF on areas of mutual interest, including the clean economy and resilient supply chains.

Both Goyal and Farrell noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese look forward to swift progress in negotiations and for an early conclusion of an ambitious Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which will build on the foundation laid by the ECTA, including new areas of trade, investment and cooperation. CECA will create new employment opportunities, raise living standards and improve the general welfare in both countries.

as soon as possible, are pleased with the progress resolving various bilateral technical market access issues and look forward to continuing engagement.

They highlighted the importance of a smooth and timely clean energy transition as both countries work towards achieving their respective net zero goals.

Goyal and Farrell reaffirmed the importance of the multilateral trading system, with the WTO at its core. They agreed to build on the success of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva and reaffirmed their commitment towards improving WTO functions and having a fully functioning dispute settlement system by 2024.

They also agreed to work towards a productive engagement in the run-up to the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference to be held in Abu Dhabi in 2024.

Govt to infuse more capital in public sector general insurers

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (PTI): The government may have to infuse more capital in the three public sector general insurance companies to improve their financial health, a senior government official said.

The government last year provided Rs 5,000 crore capital to three insurers --National Insurance Company Limited, Oriental Insurance Company Limited and United India Insurance Company. Based on the performance in the FY23, the finance ministry would take a call as to how much capital they would require to meet regulatory requirement, the

official said. They are not in good financial health and fund would be infused in these entities to augment their solvency margin, the official added. The solvency margin is the extra capital the companies must hold over and above the claim amounts they are likely to incur. It acts as a financial backup in extreme situations, enabling the company to settle all claims. As per the regulator IRDAI’s mandate, the minimum solvency ratio insurance companies must maintain is 1.5 to lower risks. In terms of solvency margin, the required value is 150 per cent.

(From p-1) The government in 2008 had declared Silsako Beel, surrounded by Chachal, Hengerabari, Pathar Quarry and Satgaon areas, a protected water body in Guwahati through an Act and prohibited any construction or settlement in around 1,800 bighas (over 595 acres) of the lake area.

As per Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) chairman Narayan Deka, less than 300 bighas of the lake remained free from encroachment and the waterbody was reduced to a “small pit”.

“This is one of the main reasons for water logging in the eastern part of Guwahati city during the monsoon season,” he had claimed.

On March 2, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration issued an order to demolish as many as 89 bridges over Bahini

river along an approximately 8 km stretch in Guwahati to ease water logging problems in a part of the city.

However, the order was modified on March 6 and said 26 bridges will be demolished instead of 89 after the district authority and the state government were slammed by the opposition and social media users.

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led dispensation has been carrying out eviction drives in different parts of the state since it assumed power in May 2021. In the last three months, several major eviction exercises have taken place.

In one of the largest eviction drives in Assam, the administration, in a three-day exercise from February 14, cleared 2,099 hectares in Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary and nearby revenue villages in Sonitpur district, affecting almost 12,800 people.

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (PTI): Eight of the top 10 valued firms faced a combined erosion of Rs 1,03,732.39 crore in market valuation last week, with Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank taking the biggest hit amid an overall weak trend in equities.

During the holiday-shortened week, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 673.84 points or 1.12 per cent amid concerns over the quantum of the next interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve.

Barring Bharti Airtel and ITC, eight firms suffered erosion from their market capitalisation (mcap). The market valuation of Reliance Industries plummeted by Rs 41,878.37 crore to Rs 15,71,724.26 crore, the most among the top 10 firms.

The mcap of ICICI Bank tumbled Rs 18,134.73 to Rs 5,88,379.98 crore. The valuation of HDFC Bank tanked by Rs 15,007.38 to Rs 8,86,300.20 crore, and that of State Bank of India eroded by Rs 12,360.59 to Rs 4,88,399.39 crore. HDFC’s market valuation diminished by Rs 6,893.18 crore to Rs 4,77,524.24 crore. Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) valuation slumped by Rs 4,281.09 to Rs 12,18,848.31 crore.

KINSHASA, MAR 12 (IANS): At least 19 people were killed in an overnight attack in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local sources said on Sunday.

The attack, which took place in the village of Kirindera in the territory of Beni of the eastern province of North Kivu, killed at least 19 civilians, Carly Nzanzu Kasivita, former governor of North Kivu, told journalists on Sunday morning, attributing the attack to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Several buildings in the village, including a health center, were set on fire by the rebels, he said.

The attack came two days after another attack blamed on the ADF rebels on Thursday in two villages of the Beni territory, where at least 44 people were killed.

SAN DIEGO (US), MAR 12 (AP): At least eight people were killed when two suspected smuggling boats approached a San Diego beach and one capsized, and crews are searching Sunday for an estimated seven additional victims, authorities said.

A woman on one of the panga-style boats called 911 late Saturday to report that the other vessel had overturned in waves off Blacks Beach, according to US Coast Guard Petty Officer Richard Brahm.

“The woman who called stated that the boat that overturned had 15 people on it, but that was just an estimate,” Brahm said.

Coast Guard and San Diego Fire-Rescue crews pulled eight bodies from the water, but thick fog hampered the search for additional victims. A Coast Guard cutter combed the area early Sunday, and officials hoped to get helicopters in the air when weather improves, Brahm said.

KYIV, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): Ukrainian military spokesperson, Serhiy Cherevatyi, on Sunday said that 221 pro-Moscow troops were killed and more than 300 wounded in the frontline city of Bakhmut.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry announced that up to 210 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the broader Donetsk part of the front line, without specifying Bakhmut casualties, reports Press TV. “In the city center, the Bakhmutka River now marks the front line,” the British Defense Ministry said in its daily intelligence bulletin on Saturday adding that Bakhmut has become a “killing zone.”

It said Russia’s Wagner military group has taken control of most of the eastern part of Bakhmut in recent days, while Ukrainian forces held its western parts.

WILMINGTON (US), MAR 12 (AP): Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday that the federal government would not bail out Silicon Valley Bank, but is working to help depositors who are concerned about their money.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to USD 250,000, but many of the companies and wealthy people who used the bank — known for its relationships with technology startups and venture capital — had more than that amount in their account. There are fears that some workers across the country won’t receive their paychecks.

Yellen, in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation,” provided few details on the government’s next steps. But she emphasised that the situation was much different from the financial crisis almost 15 years ago, which led to bank bailouts to protect the industry.

“We’re not going to do that again,” she said.

Yellen tried to reassure Americans that there will be no domino effect after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.

“The American banking system is really safe and well capitalized,” she said.

“It’s resilient.”

Silicon Valley Bank is the nation’s 16th-largest bank. It was the second biggest bank failure in U.S. history after the collapse of Washington Mutual in 2008. The bank served mostly technology workers and venture capital-backed companies, including some of the industr y’s bestknown brands.

Silicon Valley Bank began its slid into insolvency when its customers, largely technology companies that needed cash as they struggled to get financing, began withdrawing their deposits. The bank had to sell bonds at a loss to cover the withdrawals, leading to the largest failure of a U.S. financial institution since the height of the financial crisis.

cientists in Australia have discovered an enzyme in bacteria that converts air into energy, an advance that opens the way for a new clean source of power.

The finding, published in the jour nal Nature, shows that this enzyme uses the low amounts of the hydrogen in the atmosphere to create an electrical current.

The research team produced and analysed a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium.

Recent work by the team has shown that many bacteria use hydrogen from the atmosphere as an energy source in nutrient-poor environments.

“We’ve known for some time that bacteria can use the trace hydrogen in the air as a source of energy to help them grow and survive, including in Antarctic soils, volcanic craters, and the deep ocean,” said Professor Chris Greening from Monash University in Australia.

“But we didn’t know

how they did this, until now,” Greening said.

The researchers extracted the enzyme responsible for using atmospheric hydrogen from a bacterium called Mycobacterium smegmatis. They showed that this enzyme, called Huc, turns hydrogen gas into an electrical current.

“Huc is extraordinarily efficient. Unlike all other known enzymes and chemical catalysts, it even consumes hydrogen below atmospheric levels -- as

little as 0.00005 per cent of the air we breathe,” said Rhys Grinter from Monash University.

The researchers used several cutting-edge methods to reveal the molecular blueprint of atmospheric hydrogen oxidation.

They used advanced microscopy (cr yo-EM) to determine its atomic structure and electrical pathways, pushing boundaries to produce the most resolved enzyme structure reported by this method

to date.

The team also used a technique called electrochemistry to demonstrate the purified enzyme creates electricity at minute hydrogen concentrations.

Laboratory work performed by Ashleigh Kropp, a PHD student at Monash University, shows that it is possible to store purified Huc for long periods.

“It is astonishingly stable. It is possible to freeze the enzyme or heat it to 80 degrees celsius, and it retains its power to generate energy,” Kropp said.

“This reflects that this enzyme helps bacteria to survive in the most extreme environments,” he said.

Huc is a “natural battery” that produces a sustained electrical current from air or added hydrogen, the researchers said.

While this research is at an early stage, the discovery of Huc has considerable potential to develop small air-powered devices, for example as an alternative to solar-powered devices, they added.

AHMEDABAD, MAR 12 (PTI): India’s batting mainstay Virat Kohli finally ended a near 40-month wait for his 28th Test hundred as his scrappy but brilliantly effective 186 set up a gripping final day of the fourth Test against Australia here on Sunday.

Kohli’s epic knock helped India amass 571 in response to Australia’s first innings score of 480.

With a lead of 91 runs, India had a go at Australia in the six overs before stumps but visitors managed to keep all wickets intact. With a lead of 88 at close, India will have to go for the jugular on day five on a track where there is finally some turn and bounce on offer but not something that batters can’t tackle.

DHAKA, MAR 12 (AP): Bangladesh wrapped up the three-match T20 series against England with a game to spare as Mehidy Hasan claimed a careerbest 4-12 and added a crucial 20-run knock to secure a four-wicket victory over the tourists on Sunday.

Bangladesh held England to a lowly 117 in 20 overs, before knocking off the target with seven balls to spare, reaching 120-6.

Najmul Hossain, who was instrumental in the six-

wicket victory in the first match with a 30-ball 51, was not out on 46, helping the home side stay in the contest despite England bowlers making inroads at regular intervals. Fast bowler Jofra Archer gave England a flicker of hope, claiming 3-13 but Najmul held his nerve. Bangladesh lost both openers — Liton Das and Rony Talukdar — while chasing the moderate target for just 27 runs.

Later, Najmul held one end with confidence

but the chase didn’t get going in earnest until Mehidy struck two sixes as part of his 16- ball 20.

Wife Anushka Sharma put up an Instagram post which informed that Kohli showed this enormous composure despite being “sick”.

It was pity that Shreyas Iyer couldn’t turn up for batting due to recurring back pain and Kohli was the ninth and last Indian man to be dismissed after his 364 ball knock that spanned over 8 hours and 36 minutes. No one deserved those 14 runs more than him.

Nagaland participates at the 26th AIFSM in Haryana

AHMEDABAD, MAR 12 (PTI): Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer was taken for scans after complaining of back pain on the penultimate day of the fourth and final Test against Australia here on Sunday.

Iyer’s injury came to light after wicketkeeperbatter Srikar Bharat came out to bat ahead of him following the dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja (28) in the morning session.

Iyer had also missed the first Test in Nagpur due to a back issue before returning for the second game in Delhi. “Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play?.

He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” BCCI said in a medical update.

PANCHKULA, MAR 12 (NPN): After a long hiatus of about 25 years, the Forest Department, Nagaland participated in the 26th All India Forest Sports Meet(AIFSM) held at Panchkula, Haryana from March 10 to 14.

According DIPR report, about 2400 forest personnel from across the nation participated in the 5-day event. The idea of AIFSM was conceptualized and held in Hyderabad in 1993 for the first time and has become a regular yearly affair since then.

A contingent of 10 persons represented Nagaland and actively par-

ticipated in events like badminton, table tennis, carom, sprint, chess, powerlifting, rifle shooting, and quiz competition.

The AIFSM aims to promote games and sports activities among the officers and staff of the forest department /organizations/institutions of states, union territories, and the central government, thereby nurturing good health, team spirit, and camaraderie among them. The event features a wide range of athletic competitions including track and field events, archery, rifle shooting, and various other conventional games and sports.
