NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): India has been witnessing an uptick in H3N2 influenza cases.

Seasonal influenza is a respiratory tract infection caused by four distinct types of viruses (A, B, C, and D) belonging to the Orthomyxoviridae family. H3N2 has been the dominant subtype followed by H1N1. According to doctors, there is also a spike in ICU admissions of the elderly and kids due to H3N2 influenza.

As the symptoms of this viral infection are similar to COVID-19, the doctors have advised to extreme precautions and masking up to prevent the spread of the virus.

Other than H3N2, the country is also witnessing a surge in COVID-19 and swine flu infections. According to the real-time surveillance data by the integrated disease surveillance programme (IDSP), 955 cases of H1N1 also

Therefore, the house resolved that until the state government reviews and completely “deletes” Sec 120 (1) (a) and issues notification, the hoho and the frontal organizations shall “boycott” the ULB election in Zunheboto district in toto.

Delayed salaries: Longkhim teachers launch protest DIMAPUR, MAR 15 (NPN): Government school teachers under SDEO Longkhim under Tuensang district have launched protest against delay in payment of salaries and also to press for their two-point charter of demands.

In a press release, graduate teacher, Yotingla Sangtam, on behalf of aggrieved teachers, said that the aggrieved teachers took out silent protest march at Longkhim on March 13, 2023 and affirmed to boycott classes until the department fulfilled charter of demands, which include disciplinary actions against “erring officials” of SDEO Longkhim and proper functioning of SDEO office Longkhim.

Nagaland has 1,939 govt schools: UDISE report Correspondent

KO H I M A , M A R 1 5 (NPN): A three-day ‘InHouse training’ for newly promoted assistant head masters (AHMs) and Junior Education Officers (JEOs) got underway at Morung Conference Hall, Directorate of School Education, Kohima on Wednesday.

Speaking at the programme, commissioner and secretary school education and SCERT, Kevileno Angami, informed that Nagaland has 1,939 government schools as per UDISE 202122. She also informed that out of 32,000 teachers (both private and government) there were 18,000 teachers in government schools.

She further informed that out of about 4 lakh students across the state, about 1.64 lakh students were in government schools.

Angami said the past performance of the government schools in Nagaland have today produced responsible leaders, politicians and responsible citizens of the

Kevileno Angami and other officials at the inaugural session of three-day ‘In-House training’ at Kohima on Wednesday (NP) state. Stating that “People look upon us to deliver”, she stressed the need to restore the faith of the public in the government school. She also urged the newly promoted AHMs/JEOs to passionately work towards building a better future for children and the state.

Asserting that education was the backbone of the society and teachers were the builders of the future, Angami informed that as a moulder of the future, as managers and administrators of the school, the department believed that the newly promoted officers

would be able to deliver.

Stating that they would face challenges in their journey, C&S, however, said one should not lose the focus, which is to nurture, build the people, the children, who would be responsible citizens and not liability to the state.

Reminding the officers and teachers of the department about their responsibility as educators, as education managers and administrators, Angami said there was a need to increase the level of leadership in school administration to take the government

schools forward. Principal Director school education, Thavaseelan K, in his brief address, said the department has designed “In-House training” to train the newly promoted AHMs/JEOs on the multiple aspects of office procedures, school management etc. before taking up their responsibilities.

He urged them to give their best every single day to secure a bright future for children. School education director, Wonthungo Tsopoe, also urged AHMs/ JEOs to build good rapport with their colleagues, SMCs, parents, teachers and the

society, to understand the problem and the ground reality. He said that the officers should be able to exercise their responsibilities in an efficient manner to build a better department. The three-day training would cover wide range of topics.

Resource persons include Dr. Zavise Rume, Prof. SCERT; Avelu Ruho, deputy project director NECTAR Project; Kelhikha Kenye, deputy project director Samagra Mission Nagaland; Andreas, under secretary government of Nagaland; G. Kevishe (Rtd) additional secretary; Longtsubo, assistant superintendent; Daniel Thong, senior lecturer SCERT, nodal officer of Vidyanjali 2.0 and Lhokuto, assistant superintendent. Earlier, the inaugural session was chaired by assistant director Kevitsiano Luho while assistant director Visetuono Angami invoked God’s blessing.

Altogether, 195 registered for the training programme, which will continue till March 17.

DIMAPUR: Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Kiphire conducted training-cum-exposure trip within the state for farmers on mushroom cultivation at State Horticulture Nursery, Dimapur on March 15.

A press release by ATMA Kiphire stated that resource person from the horticulture nursery emphasised on the importance of starting a household income.

The resource person talked about the steps on mushroom cultivation, how to get started and bring employment opportunity with extra household income. The farmers were also educated on different types of mushroom cultivation such as button mushroom, oyster mushroom, paddy straw mushroom, specialty mushrooms, black ear and milky mushroom. ADC and administrator has cautioned that failure to renew within the given time period, defaulters would be penalized as per the appropriate section of the law.

MIP of NSCN (R) in a condolence message said late Iheshe joined the Naga national movement in 2000, and served with full dedication and integrity till his last breath. MIP said, in his demise the Nagas have lost one of the most dedicated, compassionate and a patriotic leader. His enormous and selfless contribution for the Naga nation will ever be remembered and etched in the annals of Naga history, MIP said. DIMAPUR: A hands-on trainings on banana fibre extraction its value addition and vermicomposting were organised by Science and Technology Intervention in North Eastern RegionTechnology Facilitation Centre (STINER-TFC) Nagaland Centre, School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) Nagaland University (NU) Medziphema Campus on March 10 and March 14 at Kashanyu Village, Tseminyu district and Zuheshe Village, Niuland district respectively.

A press release by SASRD, NU, Medziphema informed that the trainings under the initiative of project incharge STINERTFC, SASRD, NU, Medziphema Campus, professor Akali Sema, focused on creating awareness among

the native people to realize the economic values of the banana plant, the various aveneus that could be generated through and how STINER as a centre could intervene in bringing in and introducing relevant and need based technologies for the benefit of the people.

Speaking on the concept of banana fibre extraction and craft making, project assistant, STINER-TFC, Bikram Ghimere emphasised on the importance of utilizing the rich resources of the region and develop them into economic generating activities.

Ghimere specifically mentioned that the banana plantation in entire Nagaalnd still lies unutilized, while in other states of the country this waste was being converted into various economic and employment generating aveneus. He said

banana utilisaiton would be achieved in the state with the right technology intervention and right commitment from the native people.

F u r t h e r, G h i m e r e stressed on mass production of the fibre while mentioning that the state was unable to meet its export demand and how collectively through cluster formation in the region this project could be made into a self sustaining and employment generating enterprise.

In a demonstration of banana fibre extracting,

MTS, STINER-TFC, Vibito Savino gave step wise practical demonstration of the procedure involved in extraction and its value addition.

A practical session on vermi-composting was also conducted, where Bikram Ghimere accentuated on the importance and scope of vermi-composting in converting household and farm wastes into successful home-based income generating avenues. A total of 75 participants were sensitized at the training programme.

DIMAPUR: Joining the world in raising awareness about consumer rights and promote consumer protection, Nagaland observed “World Consumer Rights Day” under 2023 theme, “Empowering Consumers Through Clean Energy Transitions”, Wednesday.

N V C O, K L C & PBC: Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) Kohima Law College (KLC) and Pro Bono Club (PBC) jointly celebrated “World Consumer Rights Day” at the College Auditorium with NVCO president, Kezhokhoto Savi as main speaker.

gramme, Kezhokhoto Savi said that “Right to Public Services Legislation” in India comprises statutory laws which guarantee time bound delivery of services for various public services rendered by the government to citizen, and provide mechanism for punishing the errant public servant found deficient in providing the service stipulated under the statute.

Savi stated that the legislation was meant to reduce corruption among the government officials and to increase transparency and public accountability.

He informed that more than 14 states in the country have enacted this legislation where Madhya Pradesh became the first state to enact “Right to Service Act” in 2010.

Savi said the common framework of the legislations in various states includes granting to right to public services, which are to be provided to the public by the designated official within the stipulated time frame.

Further, he informed that issuing caste, birth, marriage, domicile certificates, electric connection, votes card, ration card, copies of land records,

etc., were some of the common public services which are to be provided within the fixed time frame as a right under the Act. The function was chaired by David facultyin-charge of Pro Bono Club and attended by college administrator, faculty and law students.

The celebration witnessed a skit by Nocklei M, Shahyong and Yakap Shankai highlighting various conduct of traders in exploiting consumers in the market while buying goods and availing services including unfair means of practices by the meat sellers especially shortage

in weight. In a short presentation, Muwali Sangtam, Wanjen and Huluto highlighted various issues related to consumer rights emphasising on right to public services.

Addressing the gathering as the speaker, advocate and notary public, Inavili Chophy, spoke on

how there was an impact on Indian Economy during Covid-19 lockdown which led to increase in unemployment to 24%.

She also talked about how a country like India could influence clean energy transition and to support economic recovery through clean energy.

Chophy emphasised that India can gradually reduce its exposure to commodity imports and foreign-supply chains through distributed energy systems and the promotion of domestic manufacturing.

She ended her speech saying that circular economy solutions linked with clean energy should become a core feature of India’s future economy.

173 Bn CRPF organizes Civic Action Programme ESSU, WSU flay firing incidents

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, MAR 15 (NPN): As part of its civic action programme, the 173 Bn CRPF Airfield Dimapur extended humanitarian services to various societies in and around Dimapur and Chümoukedima districts, where solar lamps and Water storage tanks were distributed.

On Wednesday, the

programme held at its unit headquarter located at Airfield Dimapur was graced by Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie as the special guest.

Addressing the gathering, Sophie acknowledged the commanding officer, officers, and men and women of the 173rd CRPF Battalion for extending humanitarian services and

considered the programme as humane and necessity for the welfare and wellbeing of the community.

He urged the beneficiaries that price of the items was not important, but concern of the force to carry out humanitarian work should be considered and appreciated. He maintained that it depends on individual officers, men and women of the unit to

come out and extend social service for the welfare of the people, and urged all beneficiaries to not forget the gesture displayed by the battalion.

Meanwhile, delivering the vote of thanks, commandant, 173 Bn C R P F, A s h o k Ku m a r Yadav, informed that the programme was organized to help the elderly and the needy, pointing out that 58 Solar Lamps and 36 Water storage tanks were distributed to the beneficiaries.

DIMAPUR: Eastern Sumi Students Union (ESSU) and Western Satami Union (WSU) have vehemently condemned the firing incidents at the private residences of Lok Sabha Tokheho Yepthomi and former MLA, Pukhayi Sumi by unidentified miscreants on March 6 midnight.

In a condemnation note, ESSU president, Ghuvika Yeptho and general secretary, Viloka Zhimo called upon everyone to condemn such acts of violence and appealed to the law enforcing agencies to investigate the matter and book the culprits at the earliest.

Western Satami Union: WSU comprising of Dimapur, Niuland and Chumoukedima districts while condemning the firing incident at the private residence of former MLA, Pukhayi Sumi at Diphupar ‘B’ village appealed to the investigating teams to probe the cause of the incident and the culprits involved be brought to the public domain to be followed by course of action.

In a press release, WSU president, Pitoho Awomi and secretary, Mughato K Kiba said

that Pukhayi, who was known for his humbleness, down to earth and committed for ushering peace in the society cannot be a victim of such unethical and uncivilised action.

The union expressed concern that if such a tall leader, whose contribution and dedication have been well cherished by all like- minded Nagas and who advocated peace, progress and prosperity has been targeted then how Nagas can expect for the change and transformation in the scoeity.

It therefore appealed to all right thinking citizens to condemn the desperate act of lawlessness as it exemplified an act of cowardice and rashness.

Yuva Ustav: Nehr u Yuva Kendra (NYK) Dimapur in collaboration with the district administration and Dimapur Government College (DGC) conducted a “Yuva Ustav” programme under the Ministry of Youth and Sports Government of India on March 15 at DGC with deputy commissioner Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal as the inaugural guest.

According to a DIPR report, the programme was a part of 180 districts across the country held on the theme, “National Unity and Solidarity”.

Various exhibitions were conducted and winners were given cash award and certificates.

Arunachal govt terminates two 25 held in paper leak case in Assam: Police agriculture development officers

GUWAHATI, MAR 15 (PTI): Twenty-five people, including 12 students, have been arrested so far in the case of alleged paper leak of class 10 state board exam, an Assam Police spokesperson said on Wednesday.

While three arrests were made on Tuesday, the rest were apprehended on Wednesday, he said.

Spokesperson Prasanta Bhuyan said, “The total number of arrests is at 25 now. This include 12 children in conflict with law.”

“Among the other 13, four are service holders.

The arrests were made from Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Sadiya, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Guwahati,” the Inspector General of Assam Police (Law and Order) added.

Bhuyan said those apprehended were produced before a local court here, which forwarded the adults to three days police custody and the juveniles to state home.

Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh on Wednesday morning reached Dibrugarh, from

where about six students have been arrested so far.

He held discussions with different officials during the day, though details of the meetings are not known.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, talking to reporters outside the Assembly here, said the CID is

carrying on investigation to get to the root of the leak.

“Some students and others have been arrested or detained so far. But we have to be patient and wait for the CID probe to be over to know from where the leak happened,” Pegu added.

gress held a brief demonstration at the Assembly gate before the start of day’s proceedings, demanding clarity on whether the question paper was leaked or not.

“The government told us in the House that the exam was cancelled as some material was circulating on WhatsApp. They must clarify what had actually happened,” Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia said.

The general science exam of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), for class 10 was cancelled late on Sunday night following reports of leakage of the question paper.

According to a SEBA notification, the cancelled examination of General Science will now be held on March 30, 2023.

The Assam Police had registered a criminal case and the CID was handed over the investigation on Monday.

ITANAGAR, MAR 15 (PTI): The Ar unachal Pradesh government has terminated two Group A officers in connection with the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) paper leak issue.

The two officers were holding the posts of Agriculture Development Officer (ADO) and are currently lodged at Jully district jail near here, in connection with the case, officials at the agriculture department said.

ADOs Dekni Romin and Yimar Rakshap posted at Taliha in Upper Subansiri and Hawai in Anjaw district of the state have been terminated by the government from their services in the backdrop of the on-going APPSC exam fiasco, an order issued by state Agriculture Commissioner Bidol Tayeng stated.

The appointments were provisional and they were still in two years probation

period and their services were yet to be confirmed by the government.

The two formers ADOs were earlier arrested by the Special Investigating Cell (SIC) in connection with the paper leak case and were remanded to police custody for more than 48 hours.

Both the officers were served with termination notices by the department on February 6 giving them a month time to respond.

However, they have not replied to the notices.

Another official of the department Talung Jomang, serving as Agriculture Field Assistant (senior), who is currently lodged at Jully district jail, has been placed under suspension, the order said, adding disciplinary proceedings could not be completed due to certain previous judgement of the Supreme Court in a similar case.

Khandu had on March 10 last informed in the assembly that since 2017, there were eleven exams conducted by the APPSC in which, a total of 54 persons including 42 government officials have been arrested on allegations of malpractices.

The question paper leak issue came to light last year after one Gyamar Padung, who appeared in the examination, filed a complaint at the Itanagar police station on August 29, claiming that he suspected that the question paper was leaked. More than 400 candidates appeared in the examination held on August 26 and 27 last year.

The CBI had taken over the investigation on October 27 last after the state government recommended it. The case was initially investigated by the Capital Police and later transferred to the Special Investigation Cell (SIC) of the state police.

GUWAHATI, MAR 15 (PTI): The number of medical colleges in Assam will increase to 12 with a new one at Nalbari getting approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start MBBS course from 2023-24 academic session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

“We’ve reached another milestone! Delighted to share that Nalbari Medical College has been recognised

by National Medical Commission with approval to admit 100 MBBS students,” Sarma wrote on Twitter.

State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, in a statement, said with the latest approval, the total number of MBBS seats in the state will increase to 1,500.

The Assam government, he said, has set a target of 24 medical colleges in the state by 2026.

AGARTALA, MAR 15 (PTI): Union minister Pratima Bhoumik, who had recently contested and won elections from Dhanpur seat, resigned on Wednesday as the member of legislative assembly (MLA).

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the loss of lives due to Cyclone Freddy in Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar, and said India stands with them in this tough time. Cyclone Freddy has barrelled through Mozambique and Malawi since late last week, killing hundreds and displacing thousands more. It also pummelled the islands of Madagascar and Réunion last month as it traversed the Indian Ocean, according to media reports. “Distressed by the devastation due to Cyclone Freddy in Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar. Condolences to President Lazarus Chakwera, President Filipe Nyusi and President Andry Rajoelina, bereaved families and those affected by the cyclone,” Modi said in a tweet. Banned tobacco products seized

PALGHAR, MAR 15 (PTI): Polic e seized banned gutkha and tobacco products worth more than Rs 11.66 lakh being smuggled into Maharashtra in Palghar district and arrested a man, an official said on Wednesday. The seizure was made by local crime branch officials from a small truck at a checkpost on the MumbaiAhmedabad highway on March 13, he said. A case was registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the official added.

Maha marketing officer suspended

GONDIA (PTI), MAR 15: The Maharashtra State Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited has suspended a district marketing officer from Bhandara over alleged irregularities in paddy procurement, an official said on Wednesday. DMO Ganesh Kharche has been accused of favouring one Sant Ravidas Magasvargiya Sushikshit Berozgaar Sahkari Sanstha Maryadit (Tumsar) that allegedly released paddy to millers less than the quantity it procured at minimum suppor t price (MSP).

Kharche also allegedly failed to respond when an explanation was sought, which led to his suspension and a departmental inquiry against him, said the official. In February, two district marketing officers were suspended for alleged irregularities in paddy procurement and custom milling, he said.

Indian NGOs received Rs 2,430.80: Govt

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): A total of Rs 2,430.84 crore in foreign funding has been received

by Indian NGOs in the last three years, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. An amount of Rs 905.50 crore in foreign funding has been received by NGOs in 2021-22, Rs 798.18 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 727.16 crore in 2019-20, he said in a written reply. The minister said as on March 10, 2023, the FCRA registration certificate of 16,383 NGOs is valid, out of which 14,966 NGOs have submitted mandatory annual returns for the financial year 2021-22 under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.

He said some complaints had been received in the past regarding misutilisation or diversion of foreign contributions by the FCRA registered associations and such complaints are dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Act and rules.

Rahul’s Police stop oppn march to ED office in Delhi new salvo at government NEW DELHI, MAR15 (IANS): Amid uproar over his UK statement and government seeking apology, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday fired a fresh salvo at Adani Group and the government by raising questions on a foreign entity, named Elara.

Gandhi, after arriving in the national capital from his foreign trip, alleged that Adani group and Elara have been given a contract for missile and radar upgrade.

In a tweet, he said, “India’s missile and radar upgrade contract is given to a company owned by Adani and a dubious foreign entity called Elara. “Who controls Elara? Why is India’s national security being compromised by giving control of strategic defence equipment to unknown foreign entities?”

While Rahul Gandhi is at centre of the controversy, the opposition is united on Adani row. The Trinamool Congress, however, is staying away from the Congressled grouping.

Several Congress leaders spoke out on the matter with Gandhi too sharing a screenshot of the report.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also hit out at the government over the media report in a tweet in Hindi.

“A leading newspaper of the country has revealed the co-ownership of a dubious Mauritius-based company with a firm of Adani Group. This firm of Adani Group has important contracts in ISRO-DRDO and the defense sector,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

“But the prime minister neither wants a discussion on this in Parliament, nor any investigation. Why?” she said. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, posed a set of three questions to Adani.

The protest march began around 12.30 pm from Parliament House and MPs from several opposition parties took part in it. However, it was soon stopped by police. The opposition

has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the AdaniHindenburg issue and has been stalling proceedings of Parliament over their demand.

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): Delhi Police on Wednesday erected barricades and stopped leaders of several opposition parties marching towards the ED office here from Parliament House demanding a JPC probe into the Adani issue, saying prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in place in the area.

The opposition leaders were stopped near Vijay Chowk in Lutyens’ Delhi.

Police made regular announcements using loudspeakers and urged the protesting MPs to vacate the area as CrPC Section 144, which prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area, was in effect.

When the leaders could not move past the barricade, they called off their march and returned to Parliament House.

A senior police officer said earlier in the day that the police had made adequate security arrangements outside the ED office in view of the protest march.

The leaders wanted to hand over a complaint to the Enforcement Directorate on the Adani-Hindenburg issue.

Before starting their march, the leaders met in the office of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament House complex to chalk out a joint strategy on the issue.

Several Opposition leaders on Wednesday attacked the government over a media report claiming that a key Adani Group investor is also co-owner with the conglomerate in a defence firm.

A report in The Indian Express claimed that ELARA India Opportunities Fund (Elara IOF), a venture capital fund managed by Elara Capital, is one of the top four entities registered in Mauritius that holds shares predominantly in Adani Group companies.

According to the report, records show that along with the Adani Group, it is a promoter entity in a defence company, Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies Private Limited.

This defence company, incorporated in 2003, works closely with ISRO and DRDO and has a Rs 590 crore contract with the Union Ministry of Defence in 2020 to upgrade and

digitise the ageing Pechora missile and radar systems, the report said.

Gandhi’s grudge with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken the shape of a grudge with India, she charged, demanding that the Wayanad MP of the Congress apologise to Parliament for his remarks.

During his interactions in the UK recently, Gandhi alleged that the structures of Indian democracy are under attack and there is a “full-scale assault” on the country’s institutions.

Criticising govt does not amount to being unpatriotic: Kapil Sibal NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): Amid a political storm over Rahul Gandhi’s “democracy under attack” remarks made in the UK, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said criticising the government whether at home or abroad is a citizen’s right and does not amount to criticising India or being unpatriotic.

Gandhi’s remarks during his recent trip to the United Kingdom have rocked Parliament, with both Houses failing to transact any significant business on the first three days of the budget session’s second half.

echnology was the mantra for catapulting human development and progress especially after the advent of the internet in the early 80s and later access to mobile web from the end of 1996.

After that period, the world underwent a huge transformation with regard to information and technology and has been going on at rapid pace. However, as the good also comes with the bad, today’s online era the leap in technology has also brought deep concerns about mobile addiction among children, some as young as two years. Thus, keeping children away from a screen is a huge challenge for parents.

Smartphones/tablets are becoming essential tools of learning for children nowadays. While there are many pros to the online world it is highly addictive and might leave an unfavorable impact on the child’s development. Irresponsible use of media can lead to harmful tendencies in children. Today people are spending too much time on the smartphone and for the children, it can have an adverse effect on their physical and mental health. When small children become addicted to a cell phone, they may constantly ask for the phone. If they are not given then they become angry, upset or have a temper tantrum.

Children can become dependent on the cell phone and may not know what to do without it. This is to be expected, but as long as you stay firm and do not give in, they will find a new way to cope. From behavioural problems, sleep disturbances, depression, to obesity, nervous system problems and slower social development skills, there could be many side effects of excessive phone usage. According to a survey conducted by the Saurashtra University in January this year, 82% of children were found to be suffering from some psychological conditions like loneliness because of mobile addiction. While 73% of children miss their mobile while they are at school, 77% of children demand mobile phones once they return from the school. The survey has found that at least 93 % of children prefer to play mobile games and they do not like to play outdoor games. The survey has also found that the children’s mothers are responsible for the addiction among their kids. The survey reported that 54% of mothers interviewed, give mobile phones to their children to keep them engaged so that they (mothers) could complete their work without being disturbed. Of all the women contacted, about 30% were working women and 70 % were non-working. According to the survey, 82% of children demand mobile phones from their parents, while 93% children prefer to play mobile games and they do not like to play outdoor games. There are 78% children who are habituated to eating food while watching the mobile screen. There are many dangers associated with children being addicted to a cell phone. A cell phone can affect their learning process, can interfere with their ability to sleep, can prevent them from learning to cope in real life situations, and can lead to obesity. The long term effects of cell phone addition in children are not fully known at this time, as this is the first generation of kids who have access to the full scope of technology that is currently available. The future generation is in danger and it is time to remove this technological addiction and save them.

Jesus is far ahead of us and is beginning to seem different and unfamiliar— “Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed” (Mark 10:32).

There is an aspect of Jesus that chills even a disciple’s heart to its depth and makes his entire spiritual life gasp for air. This unusual Person with His face set “like a flint” (Isaiah 50:7) is walking with great determination ahead of me, and He strikes terror right through me. He no longer seems to be my Counselor and Friend and has a point of view about which I know nothing. All I can do is stand and stare at Him in amazement. At first I was confident that I understood Him, but now I am not so sure. I begin to realize that there is a distance between Jesus and me and I can no longer be intimate with Him. I have no idea where He is going, and the goal has become strangely distant.

Jesus Christ had to understand fully every sin and sorrow that human beings could experience, and that is what makes Him seem unfamiliar. When we see this aspect of Him, we realize we really don’t know Him. We don’t recognize even one characteristic of His life, and we don’t know how to begin to follow Him. He is far ahead of us, a Leader who seems totally unfamiliar, and we have no friendship with Him. The discipline of dismay is an essential lesson which a disciple must learn. The danger is that we tend to look back on our times of obedience and on our past sacrifices to God in an effort to keep our enthusiasm for Him strong (see Isaiah 50:10-11). But when the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come the ability to follow Jesus truly, which brings inexpressibly wonderful joy.

On 33 percent women reservation

he main objection to holding of ULB elections with 33% reservation for women in Nagaland is because it infringes upon Naga traditional and customary laws under Article 371(A) which is a special provision of the Indian constitution given to the state of Nagaland.

The flip-flop of the state government in its inability to stand firmly to its own resolutions is the reason for the lack of solution to the challenges that the state faces.

The Nagaland Legislative Assembly had, on September 22, 2021, passed a resolution exempting operation of Part IXA of the constitution of India which mandates 33% reservation for women in municipalities and town councils of the state.

When the Public Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), however, filed a civil appeal to the Supreme Court against the state assembly’s resolution and seeking to

hold elections to ULBs in accordance with Section 23A of the Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act, 2006, the state government, instead of standing ground, called for a consultative meeting on 9th March, 2022, with all the representatives of Apex tribal bodies, civil society organisations, and church bodies. Chief Minister, Rio, in a complete contradiction to the Nagaland assembly resolution of September 22, 2021, made an about-turn, and with a straight face, had said that since 33% women reservation in ULBs was part and parcel of 74th Amendment, there was nothing he or the legislators could do about it.

It was abject surrender, and the unseen hand of New Delhi at work through the Supreme Court order that had given the Nagaland government six weeks time to report back on the issue, was not lost on all the keen observers. The then IT

The State of Qatar, earlier this week expressed deep concern over the Afghan caretaker government’s decisions which negatively affect Afghan women and girls’ rights, especially suspending their studies in secondary schools and universities

Before the consultative meeting happened, in response to the plea filed by the PUCL and others to the Supreme Court seeking to hold ULB elections in accordance with Section 23A of Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act, 2006, the state government had presented a counter proposal to implement reservation by nomination where men would nominate women for the

earners. In more sense than one, Naga women enjoy more higher social status and privileges than most other women elsewhere.

Thus the need for the 74th Amendment of the Indian constitution becomes necessary for women in mainland India and which is not so in the context of Naga women. The 74th Amendment is an obligation of the constitution of India to the women of mainland India who all can only be empowered, in the true sense of the word, through reservations and quotas. The obligation of the state in respect of the 74th Amendment is to ensure that Nagalandspecific Article 371A is not infringed.

Sadly, over the last two years, the state government had repeatedly reassured the supreme court of its readiness to hold the ULB elections with 33% women reservation. It is because of the pressure exerted by the Joint Coor-

Taliban Mindset Initially, when the Taliban 2.0 took over power in Afghanistan in August 2021, there was some euphoria that now they might be a changed Taliban, looking forward to mend their earlier ways and chart a new course of development for their country.

However, starting with their first diktat in September 2021, urging for segregated classrooms for boys and girls at schools, the caretaker Taliban government has followed it up with a slew of anti-women measures.

What perplexes one is that though the Taliban describe most of these decisions as Islamic, in fact they are completely unIslamic. Islam gives equal rights to men and women in all spheres of life, including, education, inheritance, right to work, say in marriage. Yet, in action Taliban goes completely against the spirit and teachings of Islam.

Instead, if they had adopted a new pragmatic and forward looking approach towards reorganising the Afghan society, it would have gone in their favour and would have helped them to consolidate their power in the country. As currently there seems to be no political force in the country, which could counter the Taliban. In addition, it would have provided them legitimacy and support from the so-called Islamic countries, if only they would have chosen to uphold the Islamic teachings, which in reality, they have failed to do.

Troubled at opposition less government

I, a mere and average Naga public am troubled at the thought of going to have an opposition-less government in Nagaland. This small write up of mine may touch every sensible Naga so that hard hitting pressure pour in the right channel at this critical time to enable the Honorable C.M of Nagaland to think of the importance of going by the views of the electorate of 37 hon’ble MLAs. The topics of harnessing all 60 MLA for the sake of Naga Peace Talk and to have Assembly sessions without hindrances would be an abominable liar. The ostensible reason is no longer believable and the act of preposterous should invite public outcry. On the other hand,the public expect BJP hon’ble MLAs to speak truth and stand firm not only for the present ministry but for the sake of democracy. If the BJP Govt. at the centre don’t mince a word in this troubled time,the public can take the party for a ride that the giant BJP is not for the public, then the party growth in the state need to be compensated in future.

Lastly, I suggest that all the 37 NDPP-BJP Hon’ble MLAs go back to their respective constituencies and consult their men who mandated them to power 14 days ago.

MERGER WITH JEE, NEET TO BE ANNOUNCED 2 YEARS IN ADVANCE

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): The Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG will be conducted in three shifts in a day this year instead of two and plans for its merger with crucial entrance exams like JEE and NEET will be announced at least two years in advance, according to UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar.

In an interview to PTI, Kumar said the UGC and National Testing Agency (NTA) are prepared to ensure that the second edition of CUET-UG is glitch free.

Acknowledging the glitches that students experienced last year, he said all issues that the students went through would be taken care of this year. He said the centres would be identified well in advance so that the second edition is glitch free.

“I agree there were several glitches during the exam last time but this year all issues have been ironed out.

Keeping in mind the experience of the students, a plan has been chalked out and we are ready to ensure that the candidates just have to worry about the exam and not any glitches,” he said.

of the exam, a common gateway for undergraduate admissions in central universities across the country, is scheduled from May 21 to 31. Kumar said that extra computers and extra centres have been arranged as plan B so that in case there are any glitches, the candidates can be shifted there and the exam for a particular shift will not be cancelled.

The UGC chief also announced that in a deviation from the usual pattern, the exam will be conducted in three shifts from this year.

Asked about the proposal to merge CUET with engineering entrance exam JEE and medical entrance exam NEET, he said, “It is definitely doable. The details are being worked out but whenever the merger happens, announcement will be made at least two years in advance so the students can prepare accordingly.”

The UGC had in March last year announced that undergraduate admissions will be conducted in all central universities through a common entrance test and not on the basis of class 12 marks. The debut edition of the CUET-UG was conducted in July last year

and was marred by glitches, prompting the NTA to cancel the exam at multiple centres. While several students were informed about cancellation a night before the exam, many of them were turned away from centres.

The UGC chairman had then said the exam at certain centres have been cancelled following reports of “sabotage”.

With 14.9 lakh registrations, the CUET, the common gateway for undergraduate admissions in all central universities, became the second biggest entrance exam in the country, surpassing JEE-Main’s average registration of nine lakh.

“We have already received over 11.5 lakh registrations this year. The deadline has been extended till March 30 and we are expecting the applications to cross last year’s number,” Kumar said.

Asked about “normalisation” of scores which left several aspirants disappointed as they found their marks reduced from their original scores, making it difficult for them to get their dream college, he said efforts have been made to minimise any errors during the process.

NEW DELHI, MARCH 15 (IANS): RJD national president Lalu Prasad along with his wife Rabri Devi and daughter arrived at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court to appear in a case related to the alleged land-for-job scam.

The court had on February 27 issued summons to them in the case which concerns alleged appointments made in the Railways in exchange for land parcels given or sold to Lalu Prasad’s family while he served as the Union Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009.

In its charge sheet, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that irregular appointments had been made in the Railways, in violation of the standards and guidelines established by the Indian Railways for hiring. It is alleged that the candidates gave Lalu

Prasad’s family members land at extremely reduced prices -- up to one-fifth of the going market rates -directly or through their close relatives and family members.

The CBI had filed the charge sheet in the case on October 10, 2022, against 16 persons including Lalu Prasad’s wife Rabri Devi and daughter and sanction was then obtained to prosecute them.

Special Judge Geetanjali Goel of Rouse Avenue Courts had on February 27 observed that, prima facie, the on-record report shows that offences have been committed under different sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Taking cognisance of the said offences, the judge then summoned the accused persons.

NEW DELHI, MARCH 15(AGENCIES): A Governor must exercise power cautiously and be aware that calling for a trust vote could bring down the government, the Supreme Court said today in sharp remarks while hearing a case on the Shiv Sena coup. Calling for a trust vote just on grounds of differences within a ruling party can topple an elected government, said the court.

Hearing the Sena versus Sena case, the Supreme Court made strong observations on Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s role in the Maharashtra vote that unseated the Uddhav Thackeray-led government last year.

“The Governor must be conscious that calling for a trust vote may lead to the toppling of the government,” said a five-judge Constitution bench headed

by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

“The Governor should not enter any area which precipitates the fall of a government. People will start ditching the ruling party and the Governor will end up toppling the ruling party.

This will be a sad spectacle for democracy,” said the judges, adding that governors must exercise their powers with the greatest circumspection.

The three-year-old Uddhav Thackeray-led SenaNCP-Congress coalition in Maharashtra lost power

after a coup in the Shiv Sena by Eknath Shinde, who went on to form a new government with the BJP in June.

Mr Koshyari had asked for a test of majority, but Mr Thackeray resigned, facing defeat, making way for Mr Shinde to take power.

The factions led by Mr Thackeray and Eknath Shinde have since been fighting for recognition as the “real Shiv Sena”.

Last month, the Election Commission handed over the Shiv Sena name and poll symbol to the Eknath Shinde faction.

Mr Thackeray, despite losing control of the party founded by his father Bal Thackeray, continues to fight the Shinde faction in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is hearing petitions that question the foundation of the Shinde government, arguing that Mr Shinde and 15 other rebels were disqualified at the time of the trust vote.

Chief Justice Chandrachud commented during the hearing: “They broke bread for three years. They broke bread with (Congress) and NCP for three years. What happened overnight after three years of happy marriage?”

When the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the rebels had lost confidence in Uddhav Thackeray, Justice Chandrachud said: “Discontent in the party by itself will not justify governor calling a trust vote.”

The Chief Justice said the Governor cannot be oblivious of the fact that in a three-party coalition, dissent took place only in one.

India’s exports dip No ULB polls without review of NM Act warn AWUMT, Sumi Hoho, KVC 8.8% to $33.88 billion

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): Contracting for the third month in a row, India’s exports declined by 8.8 per cent to USD 33.88 billion in February due to slowdown in global demand, even as the trade deficit touched about a year low of USD 17.43 billion during the month, according to official data released on Wednesday.

Imports also declined by 8.21 per cent to USD 51.31 billion as against USD

55.9 billion recorded in the corresponding month last year. Cumulatively, however during April-February this fiscal, the country’s overall merchandise exports rose by 7.5 per cent to USD 405.94 billion. Imports during the period increased by 18.82 per cent to USD 653.47 billion.

The merchandise trade deficit for the April-February this fiscal stood at about USD 247.53 billion.

The country’s exports had contracted by 6.58 per cent to USD 32.91 billion in December 2022. In February 2022, the trade deficit was USD 18.75 billion.

Last time, it was in January 2022 when the trade deficit touched USD 17.42 billion.

Commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal said that going by the trend, India’s goods and services exports will cross USD 750 billion in 2022-23.

“We have kept the momentum despite the global headwinds. Exporters have kept the momentum.

Services exports are doing extremely well. Trade deficit has really come down.

Hopefully we will be doing better,” Barthwal told reporters here. He added that the ministry has started exercise to fix the target for the next fiscal also.

KVC: Kohima Village Council (KVC) has opposed the notification that announced holding of election to urban local bodies (ULBs) on May 16, unless

two sections of Nagaland Municipal Act (NMA), 2001 were amended.

Stating this, KVC chairman Helievi-o Solo also declared support to three bodies –AKMWP, DUCCF and AWUMT– who had earlier expressed opposition to ULB elections till two sections of the NMA were amended in the interest of Nagas.

He urged the government to immediately amend the two sections, viz, i) tax on land and building as it directly infringed Article 371A and publish the amendment notification in the Government Gazette and ii) 33% reservation of seats for women in ULBs, which was not a social practice in Naga society and infringed Article 371A. The KVC chairman warned that in case the government failed to listen and address the genuine demand of the people and proceed with the election process, regardless of

endangering or infringing Article 371A, then people of the land would resort to anything for protection and retention of their birth right.

He also appealed to all intending candidates not to file nominations till the matter was settled.

While declaring support for early ULB election, Solo however suggested that it would be wise for all stakeholders to look back and revisit ULB election history of the past, and subsequent events and aftermath of the same.

He recalled that the first ULB election in Nagaland was held smoothly and peacefully in 2004 without any women reservation in three municipal councils of Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung and 20 town councils.

The tenures subsequently expired between December 19, 2009 and July 9, 2010. After this, ULB election could not

be held due to conflict between the State Government and various civil society organisations over the government’s persuasive attitude to hold the ULB election with 33% women reservation which prolonged the matter.

Thereafter, the government had forcefully tried to conduct the ULB polls in 2016-2017 with 33% women reservation but this only ignited the fury of general mass and resulted in protests by various tribal bodies, spearheaded by the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC).

KVC said this also resulted in arson and damage to government buildings and properties besides two deaths and injury to several others. The government was compelled to withhold the ULB election by a Cabinet notification.

By observing the sequences of the past history, Solo hoped that every stakeholder had learnt their lessons.

“We have witnessed that forceful initiation by the government with suppressive intentions in this matter will never succeed.

Let us learn from those past ugly events we have come across and refrain from repeating the same mistake again,” he appealed.

The KVC chairman also conveyed warm greetings to all the newly-elected members of 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and welcomed the new council of ministers and advisers of the newlyformed government under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, described as a seasoned politician and a patriotic leader of the people who was elected as chief minister for fifth time.

Solo also expressed support to the chief minister and his government, hoping that there would be all-round development without any bias or partiality to any section of Nagas or area in the State.

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): Gold prices declined

by Rs 310 to Rs 57,070 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday amid weak global trends, according to HDFC Securities.

The yellow metal had closed at Rs 57,380 per 10 grams in the previous trade.

Silver also fell by Rs 90 to Rs 66,535 per kg.

“Spot gold in the Delhi markets traded at Rs 57,070 per 10 grams, down Rs 310 per 10 grams,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. In the overseas markets, gold was quoting lower at USD 1,891 per ounce and silver was flat at USD 21.61 per ounce.

Eleven people survived the incident striking the town at 11.49 p.m. on Tuesday, several of them suffered serious wounds, the official told Xinhua news agency. “Heavy downpours triggered the landslides, six houses and one mosque were destroyed,” he said. The incident also disturbed train transportation from Bogor to the Sukabumi district of West Java province, according to him.

The resolution comes following a major clash between India and China in the Eastern Sector along the Line of Actual Control in six years.

“At a time when China continues to pose grave and gathering threats to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, it’s critical for the US to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our strategic partners in the region -- especially India,” said Senator Hagerty in a statement.

A family member said that Khakhar was ailing for long and succumbed to multiple organ failure at a private hospital in Borivali suburb early today.

His funeral is scheduled later today at the Vaziranaka Crematorium in Borivali west.

The CYP1A2 and AHR genes are associated with the speed of caffeine metabolism in the body.

The results of the analysis showed that people with higher plasma caffeine levels enjoyed a lower body mass index (BMI) and body fat, alongside a lower risk of developing type two diabetes.

KO L K ATA , M A R 1 5 (PTI): Talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri “may be playing the last season” of his illustrious career, feels Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac, who is hoping that his star player would be saving his best for the last in the coming months.

India’s next big assignment is the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar from January 12 to February 10 next year. The 38-year-old Chhetri is set to play in his third continental showpiece, the most by an Indian, after playing a pivotal role in the qualification tournament here last year.

“At his age, this will probably be his farewell from football. Obviously, Sunil may be playing his last season, and definitely his last Asian Cup,” Stimac said.

GENEVA (SWITZERLAND), MAR 15 (IANS): The date for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final has been fixed as the FIFA Council approved new international match calendars.

According to the men’s international match calendar 2025-2030, a 16day, four-match window will be introduced in late September/early October from 2026, as well as a nine-day, two-match window each in March, June and November.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final will be played on July 19, 2026.

The FIFA Council met in advance of the 73rd FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, and adopted several key decisions, particularly in relation to the fu-

ture of men’s and women’s competitions, a Xinhua report said.

It unanimously approved the change in format for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from 16 groups of three to 12 groups of four, with the top two and eight best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32. The women’s international match calendar 2024-2025 will contain six international windows per year.

The women’s football tournament of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will be played from July 25 to August 10.

The FIFA Council also approved the establishment of a dedicated task force on player welfare and other decisions.

Slot 3: AFC Cup Preliminary Round This slot will be decided between the winners of the ISL 2021-22 Trophy (Hyderabad FC) and the ISL 2022-23 Trophy (Bengaluru FC or ATK Mohun Bagan FC).

If Hyderabad FC have already qualified for Slot 2,

then a qualification match for Slot 3 will not be required, and the winner of the ISL 2022-23 Trophy will take the slot in the AFC Cup 2023-24 preliminary round.

If the winners of the ISL Trophy 2022-23 have already qualified for Slot 2, then a qualifying match for Slot 3 will not be required, and Hyderabad FC would automatically play the AFC Cup 2023-24 preliminary round.

The qualifying match for Slot 3, should it be required, will be played on May 3, 2023, or as decided by the AIFF.

Ashwin regains top spot in ICC Test rankings for bowlers NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (IANS): India’s ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed sole possession of the top spot in the latest ICC Test Rankings for bowlers, released on Wednesday after his haul of 6/91 in the drawn Ahmedabad Test against Australia.

State level Judo Indian Wells: Swiatek stops Raducanu to advance to quarters tourney for women

INDIAN WELLS (USA), MAR 15 (IANS): World No.1 Iga Swiatek moved one step closer to a successful title defense at the Indian Wells Masters after defeating 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round, setting the quarterfinal clash with Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, here.

In back-to-back matches against Grand Slam champions, Swiatek’s confidence showed in her match management. Her ability at just 21 years old to feel out her opponents and then suddenly break away and flip a set or tiebreak on its head is second to none.

In her wins over Bianca Andreescu in the third round and Raducanu in the fourth round, one could see how Swiatek’s surges left her opponents looking to the sky with demoralized grins. Andreescu, by her own admission, played a great match. But Swiatek slammed the door in the

Iga Swiatek second-set tiebreak by playing seven perfect points.

Similarly, Raducanu played a solid match. She did well to keep pace with Swiatek early, matching the World No.1 from the baseline and defending valiantly from the corners.

But a Raducanu doublefault while serving down 3-2, 0-30 gave Swiatek her best chance to break and the game’s best returner took her opportunity immediately.

Riding a r un of 9 straight points, Swiatek broke open the match to

lead 5-2 and closed out the set two games later on Tuesday night.

With a set in hand, Swiatek dominated the second set. With a clear game plan of holding steady and breaking Raducanu down with patient, prolonged rallies, Swiatek closed out the match after 1 hour and 24 minutes.

Swiatek finished with 22 winners and 14 unforced errors, while converting 4 of 10 break points. Raducanu was held to 9 winners to 22 unforced errors, going 0 for 2 on break points.

Bidding to make her second consecutive WTA 1000 semifinal, the 21-yearold Swiatek will face Cirstea for a second time in her career. It will be the first meeting since their dramatic three-set duel at the Australian Open last year.

There, Swiatek rallied from a set down to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16.

Cirstea booked her spot in her first Indian Wells quarterfinals with a big upset, knocking out No.5 Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
