21 (NPN): Nagaland Governor La Ganesan, in his maiden speech to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, highlighted pertinent issues concerning the state and priorities set by the government and called upon the members to keep public welfare and their interest paramount while deliberating on any matter.

Addressing the second day of the ongoing budget session, governor congratulated and welcomed all the members particularly the legislators who have been elected for the first time to the House.

Ganesan said the huge turn-out of electorate on the polling day and the participation of the electorates vindicated the deep faith and trust that Nagas has in the democracy and the core values of the Constitution.

He also appreciated the entire government machinery for working without fear and favour and ensuring that democracy and the will of the people be triumphed over everything else.

Ganesan said the coming back of the NDPP-BJP alliance government with a resounding mandate has shown the enormous faith reposed in the ideals and the

work done by the Government in the last five years by the people of Nagaland. Some of the highlights of the speech included: Naga issue: Ganesan affirmed that the State government was committed to not coming in the way of a final Naga settlement. He admitted that Nagas were not able to fully grow and realise their full potential owing to the

unique challenges and constraints posed by the decades-long unresolved Naga political issue.

In some way or the other, he noted that the smooth march of the State on the path of development and prosperity had been affected. He, therefore, called for resolution of the Naga political issue at the earliest possible.

The governor assured that the State government would be proactive and continue to play the role of a sincere and active facilitator for strengthening the ongoing peace process for bringing an early solution.

As NDPP-BJP commenced its new term in the service of the people with a clear vision to bring about positive change, progressive development and allaround inclusive economic growth, Ganesan said the government was mindful of the longstanding unre-

ULB polls: Meanwhile, to ensure grassroots democracy, the governor said the State government had initiated the process of conducting the longoverdue elections to the Urban Local Bodies as per the Supreme Court directive.

He stressed that the elections and constitution of ULBs as per the provisions of Constitution of India and in compliance with the Supreme Court directives were critical for equitable development, growth and progress of cities and towns in Nagaland. In this regard, he urged everyone to come forward and assist in the successful conduct of the polls in the interest of people of the State.

DIMAPUR, MAR 21

(NPN): NDPP Youth Organisation (NDPPYO) has taken strong exception to the statements made by senior NPF leaders, including its president, secretary general and Legislature Party leader, claiming that the candidates who had contested from their party were real Nagas.

In a communiqué, the youth wing of the ruling party termed the statements an insult and demeaning to every candidate who had contested in the recent Assembly elections. Such attitude also demeans the electorates and all the citizens of the State.

viable regional political party in Nagaland today, as reflected in the Naga people’s mandate. Mentioning that since 2018 the NDPP had won every election with bigger margins, it said the electoral results were the voice of the people.

NDPPYO asked NPF to realise where it stood as it had contested only a handful of seats and won in only two during the recent Assembly elections.

(AGENCIES):

Reports of the H3N2 influenza virus spreading in India, and there is concern about the potential for it to cause illness and spread further. The Health ministry has stated that the cases of seasonal influenza are expected to decline by the end of March. This is likely due to changing weather patterns and the end of peak season for influenza transmission.

However, it’s important to note that H3N2 is a type of seasonal flu virus that has been circulating for many years and is not a new subvariant that has emerged after COVID-19. While the

symptoms of H3N2 generally involve fever and cough, it can still lead to severe complications, especially in vulnerable populations.

Difference: COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, while H3N2 is a strain of the influenza virus. COVID-19 is generally more contagious than H3N2, and the symptoms can range from mild to severe. Additionally, COVID-19 can cause a loss of taste or smell, which is not a symptom of H3N2. Furthermore, COVID-19 can also lead to more severe complications such as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multi-organ failure.

Can H3N2 bring next pandemic?: As per media reports, the potential for a virus to cause a pandemic depends on many factors, including its ability to spread easily from person to person, the severity of the illness it causes, and the availability of effective treatments and vaccines.

While H3N2 is not as contagious as COVID-19, it can still spread rapidly and cause significant illness and death, as has been seen in past influenza pandemics.

While COVID-19 and H3N2 share some similarities, having had COVID-19 does not necessarily put someone at a higher risk

of contracting H3N2, nor is there evidence to suggest that the occurrence of the two is linked.

Meanwhile, the health ministry has issued revised guidelines for the management of COVID-19 cases in response to the recent surge in cases across the country. The guidelines recommend that antibiotics should not be used unless there is a clinical suspicion of bacterial infection.

It’s important to note that COVID-19 is caused by a virus, not bacteria, and antibiotics are not effective against viral infections. The guidelines also highlight the possibility of coinfection

with other endemic infections and suggest that this should be considered in the management of COVID-19 cases. This is important because co-infections can complicate the management of COVID-19 and may require specific treatments.

Additionally, the guidelines state that systemic corticosteroids are not indicated in mild disease. Corticosteroids are a type of medication that can be used to reduce inflammation and are often used to treat severe cases of COVID-19. However, they can have side effects and should only be used in severe cases under medical supervision.

“The NPF’s absurd claim that it is the only regional party in Nagaland explains the mentality of its leadership. They seem to be living in their own time capsule without realising that there has been generational changes and the world has moved on.

They are obviously living in past glory and unable to accept the realities of the present times and the current generation.

It is a universal truth that nothing stays the same and change is the only permanent assurance with time,” the communiqué stated. The youth organisation asserted that NDPP had emerged as the only

It said the party had given up even before the polls as it had no chance of forming the government since it had no possibility of reaching a majority on its own, and nor did it have any alliance with any political party.

According to the youth wing, the manner in which NPF had written off the mandate of the people was an insult to the democratic process and a disrespect to every member of Nagaland’s electorate, including those who had voted for the NPF.

It declared that Nagas were not purchasable commodities and claimed that due to the efforts of the present leadership, Nagaland continued to emerge as unique State duly recognised at the national and international levels.

Fate of Framework Agreement hangs in balance: Tuccu NSCN chairman and GPRN yaruiwo, Q Tuccu, stated that the fate of the Framework Agreement, which was signed on August 3, 2015, hangs in balance “as the commitment of the Government of India fluctuates wildly every now and then.” Delivering presidential

speech at the ‘44th Republic Day’ celebration at CHQ, Hebron, Q. Tuccu said that political identity of Nagas as a sovereign people was “well recognized and protected” by FA. However, he said that in the years that followed, the Government of India “started to fiddle with what has been agreed upon.” Yaruiwo said that the world was “keenly watching” how India handles the FA. In his speech during the ‘44th Naga Republic Day’ celebration held at Naga Unification Camp, Khehoyi on Tuesday, GPRN/NSCN president “gen. (retd.)” MB Neokpao Konyak asserted that the “Agreed Position”, signed on November 17, 2017, and negotiated status papers were “sacred political documents” widely known and accepted by all Nagas.

Neokpao Konyak expressed belief that the Government of India, in the course of political talks with Working Committee

(WC), Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs), have clearer understanding of the “Indo-Naga” political problem in its correct perspective. GPRN/NSCN president urged Nagaland government headed by chief minister to shift focus from electoral politics to facilitating and resolving the “Indo-Naga” political problem.

The programme was also attended by ato kilonser N Kitovi Zhimomi and host of leaders from the GPRN/NSCN and others.

Addressing the “43rd Naga Republic Day” celebration as chief guest at cease fire supervisory board (CFSB) office, Padumpukhri on Tuesday, NSCN/ GRPN president “gen. (retd)” Niki Sumi while acknowledging the sacrifices made by forefathers towards the cause for Naga identity and political rights has called upon every Naga to contribute in their own capacity to save Naga identity. He recalled that earlier Nagas worked in unity for a common goal.

However, Sumi said that at present the Nagas were “in state of breaking into pieces” based on lines of tribalism and clannism creating disunity among Nagas. Niki stated that the new generation intellectuals understand the Naga political rights, but were being compromised and only a handful of people were practically and physically committed for the Naga cause. He said that more of the people should practically commit for the cause.

Assam Assembly passes resolution against BBC

OPPOSITION WANTS SCREENING OF DOCUMENTARY INSIDE HOUSE

GUWAHATI, MAR 21

(PTI): Notwithstanding the opposition’s demand to screen the BBC documentary on Gujarat riots in the Assam Assembly, the House on Tuesday passed a resolution seeking action against the broadcaster for “malicious and dangerous” agenda propagated through ‘India: The Modi Question’.

Raising the issue through Private Members’ Resolution, BJP MLA Bhubon Pegu alleged that BBC has questioned India’s free press, judiciary and the legitimacy of its democratically elected government in the two-part documentary film.

Opposing the resolution, CPI(M)’s Manoranjan Talukdar said, “The topic of this resolution does not relate to Assam. None of us has watched it. I guess Pegu has watched it and that is why he brought this resolution. It would have been good if we could also watch it with him.”

Opposition members supported him and demanded a screening of the film in the House before any discussion on the resolution.

Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, Independent member Akhil Go -

Amit Shah to visit Mizoram on April 1

goi and AIUDF legislator Karim Uddin Barbhuiya demanded that Speaker Biswajit Daimary allow showing the film to understand its content and then have a discussion on the resolution.

After the documentary’s broadcast in January this year, the Narendra Modi government ordered YouTube and Twitter to remove its video links.

Pegu claimed that the timing of the film revealed a calculated attack on the image of Modi and the country as G20 meetings are being organised across the nation under India’s presidency.

He also termed the Gujarat riots as a “spontaneous reaction” to the Godhra train carnage, in which more than 50 kar sevaks were killed.

“India has crossed the UK’s economy and became the fifth largest global economy. The BBC cannot digest that, so they are trying to defame us. An international conspiracy is happening against India,” Pegu said.

He demanded the “strictest possible” action against the BBC for its “malicious and dangerous agenda to instigate religious communities and flare religious tension” by airing the documentary. Supporting him, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa

Sarma said the Supreme Court after examining all aspects of the Gujarat riots of 2002 gave a clean chit to Modi.

“The subject is related to Assam also as BBC questioned the Indian judiciary. We live in a globalised fo-

rum. The timing is very important. The release date could have been before the SC verdict also. Did the BBC criticise Jallianwala Bagh or Patharughat?” he asked.

At Patharughat in Assam’s Darrang district, 140 people were killed and hundreds of others were injured as the police fired on peasants who were protesting against increased land tax on January 28, 1894.

Sarma said criticising the Prime Minister by opposition leaders is an internal matter and the BJP government has no objection to that, but foreign media like the BBC criticising Modi and Indian judiciary after the SC judgement is a “challenge to India”.

Opposing the resolution, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said it will affect the free press and freedom of expression, which is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.

On this, Sarma said fundamental rights are for the Indian citizens, but not for BBC. Trying to connect the alleged international conspiracy, Pegu without naming Rahul Gandhi said one Congress leader went

Three more Amritpal associates brought to Dibrugarh prison

to a foreign country and claimed that Indian democracy is at stake.

This led to a noisy scene with the Congress members opposing the statement by the ruling BJP MLA, who was supported by the treasury bench legislators. Saikia said BBC in 2010 released a documentary on the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, and Modi in 2013 had claimed that the UK-based media outlet was more dependable than Doordarshan and All India Radio.

“The then Congress government did not ban it and did not unleash ED, CBI against the media for writing negative news. The Congress had accepted its mistakes and made a Sikh the Prime Minister,” he said referring to Manmohan Singh.

He also highlighted that India’s position in the World Press Freedom Index has slipped to 150 out of 180 nations and this indicates how the media is treated in the country nowadays.

As soon as the House passed the resolution by voice vote, the entire opposition staged a walkout shouting against the proposal.

DIBRUGARH (ASSAM), MAR 21 (PTI): Three more associates of radical preacher Amritpal Singh, including his uncle Harjit Singh, have been brought to the high-security Dibrugarh jail on Tuesday, an Assam Police official said. Altogether seven members linked to Amritpal Singh’s ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) have been brought here since March 19, including Harjit Singh who was brought in the early hours of Tuesday. Two WPD members identified as Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal and Gurinder Pal Singh were brought here by a flight from Delhi and whisked to the Dibrugarh Central Jail amidst tight security later in the day, the official said. Harjit Singh was flown to Assam a day after he surrendered to the Punjab Police on Monday.

A cavalcade of seven security vehicles took Harjit Singh from the Guwahati airport to the Dibrugarh Central Jail where he was lodged at 7.10 am, the official said. Harjit Singh, who officials say helped his nephew gain control over the accounts of WPD, is among the five people slapped with

the National Security Act (NSA), which allows the preventive detention of anyone who could threaten national security or public order. Earlier on Sunday, four WPD members were brought to the Dibrugarh Central Jail after the Punjab government on Saturday began a major crackdown on the outfit, headed by Amritpal Singh, who is wanted in connection with several criminal cases.

The four WPD members are Daljit Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and ‘Pradhanmantri’ Bajeka.

Heavy security has been deployed at the Mohanbari airport in Dibrugarh, fuelling speculation that more WPD members could be brought to the BJP-ruled state from Punjab,

around 2,500 km away. Harjit Singh along with driver Harpreet Singh surrendered before the police near Bullandpur gurdwara in Jalandhar’s Mehatpur area. Punjab’s Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Narinder Bhargav was among the officers who were present at the spot. In a video, Harjit Singh was seen producing his licensed 32-bore pistol and cash amounting to Rs 1-1.25 lakh that he was carrying in a car. The vehicle was later seized and the two men were taken away by the Amritsar Rural police, officials said. Assam’s Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Prashanta Bhuyan reviewed the security arrangements in Dibrugarh on Monday.

Manipur cops seize six trucks of diverted NFSA rice

Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAR 21: Police seized a huge quantity of rice meant to be distributed under the National Food Security Act in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, an official report said on Tuesday.

The seizure of the rice meant to be distributed to the NFSA beneficiaries was amid the complaints of non-distribution of the subsidized rice for the last around three months.

A team of Churachandpur district police made a report on Monday night when six trucks loaded with around 2000 bags of rice (50 kg per bag) were detected at Thingkhangphai area, alleg-

edly on the way to Imphal.

A police source said that the rice meant to be distributed to the NFSA beneficiaries were loaded from FCI godown at Tuinom in Churachandpur district and was about to be transported to Imphal.

During spot verification, the police revealed that DSO (District Supply Officer) Churachandpur district issued the rice release order and it meant for onward distribution to NFSA beneficiaries in four Assembly constituencies of the district –Churachandpur, Singhat, Henglep and Saikot.

The police detained the trucks after the drivers could not produce an official movement order and

allegedly tried to transport the rice bags to Imphal unauthorized.

Noting seriously the alleged diversion of the NFSA rice, Manipur Consumers’ Club secretary Milan said that even as there were reports of state receiving monthly rice quota under NFSA regularly, beneficiaries were not getting the rice for the last three months, since January 2023. He demanded that higher authorities of the state government must initiate legal action against officials and transporters involved in the alleged diversion of the rice meant for NFSA beneficiaries.

Recently, the opposition Manipur Congress

alleged a scam in the distribution of rice at subsidized rate under NFSA in the state while revealing that beneficiaries were deprived of the monthly entitlements since January last.

Addressing a press conference on March 15, MPCC spokesperson N Bhupenda questioned the availability of rice in the open market at inflated prices while NFSA beneficiaries were not getting their monthly entitlement since January 2023.

He claimed that as per movement plan compliance data of the Food Corporation of India, 12,900 MT of rice for Manipur was transported by the railways in December 2022 and out

SHILLONG, MAR 21:

Meghalaya Chief Minister

Conrad Sangma on Tuesday reiterated the government’s commitment to resolve the remaining six areas of dispute along the inter-state boundary with Assam, even as he maintained that Mukroh is very much within Meghalaya and there is no dispute about the area.

“The government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents of both inter-state and international borders,” Sangma informed during the Question Hour on the second day of the Budget session.

“There is no difference on Mukroh and it’s very much within Meghalaya. As per the census code, Mukroh is under the

jurisdiction of West Jaintia Hills district,” the Chief Minister said.

Moreover, Sangma said there were several polling stations in Mukroh during this year’s Assembly election and there are Meghalaya government run fair price shops, lower primary school and health

sub centre. He further informed the house that the residents of the village have job cards and are getting the benefit of schemes from the state and central government. Moreover, a temporary police outpost has also been set up in the area. To a query about the

firing incident in Mukroh in which five persons lost their lives, Sangma said an FIR has been filed into the incident and since the whole matter is under a commission of inquiry it would not be wise to provide further details on it.

The Chief Minister said the government was committed to ensure the safety and security of residents of both inter-state and international borders. He said regional committees headed by Cabinet ministers have been formed for resolving the remaining six areas of difference.

Replying to a query raised by opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit over the safety of residents along the disputed areas between Assam and Meghalaya, the Chief Minister said stan-

of the total, 5734 MT of rice was transported to FCI godown by road transport, which is 34.5 percent. He had alleged missing of the rice bags while being transported from Jiribam FCI godown to Imphal. As per FCI Regional Office Manipur, he had pointed, that the total storage capacity of the state is 63,162 MT. As per updated data of FCI, 45,884 MT of rice was in stock till February 2023 and the utilization capacity of the state is 72 percent, he said. However, rice was not available to the NFSA beneficiaries and where did the rice available in the open market come from, the spokesperson asked.

dard operating procedures is in place so that meetings between the police officials of disputed areas can be carried out regularly.

Basaiawmoit said that there is constant dear among the minds of people as the gentleman approach of Meghalaya has only emboldened Assam Government to even claimed Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills district.

However, the Chief Minister informed that the government has created seven new border outposts along the inter-state border with Assam. In addition to the existing police stations and outposts, new police stations and police outposts in close proximity to the inter-state border of Assam have also been created, Sangma said.

The children told the rescue team that they were “forced” to work under “stressful and inhuman condition” in the matchbox factory for long hours in two shifts per day.

Despite feeling tired and sleepy due to overnight work, we could not sleep due to fear of accident as we were working on machines.” The children told the team that the factory owner made them work for up to 72 hours in a week. The factory owner had rented a small room near the factory, where all the children were provided food.

‘Mir Jafar’, ‘Jaichand’: BJP, Cong trade traitor barbs

IMPASSE IN PARLIAMENT ON RAHUL, ADANI ENTERS SEVENTH DAY

NEW DELHI, MAR 21

(PTI): As the impasse in Parliament entered the seventh straight day, the BJP and the Congress traded traitor barbs on Tuesday with the ruling party terming Rahul Gandhi as a “present-day Mir Jafar of Indian polity” and the opposition party hitting back dubbing the saffron outfit members as “Jaichands”.

With the BJP and opposition parties accusing each other of paralysing Parliament and escalating the slugfest, attempts to break the deadlock by Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla failed to yield any results. Dhankhar has scheduled another meeting of floor leaders of various parties at 10 AM on March 23.

Both houses of Parliament have failed to transact any significant business ever since the start of the second leg of the budget session on March 13 except on Tuesday when amid the

din caused by opposition members the Lok Sabha passed a Rs 1.118 lakh crore budget for 2023-24 for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will not have a sitting on Wednesday and will reconvene on March 23.

While the opposition led by the Congress has been demanding a JPC probe into the Adani row, the BJP is seeking an unconditional apology from Rahul Gandhi for his “democracy under threat” remarks made in London and accusing the Congress leader of insulting India and its institutions

Mamata arrives Odisha, likely to meet Naveen Patnaik

BHUBANESWAR, MAR 21 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived here on Tuesday on a three-day trip to the neighbouring state during which she is scheduled to meet her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik, officials said.

Banerjee was received at the at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here by Odisha’s Minister of State for Home T K Behera.

“Naveen Patnaik ji is a senior leader, and I have a programme to meet him on Thursday,” she told reporters after her arrival in Puri from the Odisha capital.

Banerjee will stay at Nirman Nivas in the seaside pilgrim town for two nights.

“Adequate arrangements have been made for her stay in Puri,” Superintendent of Police K V Singh said.

The Bengal CM is likely to have an hour-long discussion with Puri district officials at 3 pm on Wednesday, and visit the Shree Jagannath Temple to offer prayers at 4 pm, the officials said.

On Thursday, Banerjee will reach Bhubaneswar around 4.30 pm and meet Patnaik at his residence before leaving for Kolkata, they said.

Meanwhile, sources in West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress said the two non-BJP CMs may hold discussions on strategies for next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

“Banerjee is the driving force behind the antiBJP thrust. The two chief ministers could discuss strategies for the 2024 general elections when they meet,” a senior TMC leader told PTI.

on foreign soil and seeking foreign intervention.

Several opposition party leaders also held a protest in the corridors of Parliament House and raised slogans demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani row. They also hung a banner from the first floor of the Parliament building that read “We want JPC”.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra set the tone for yet another stormy day by alleging that Rahul Gandhi is the “present-day Mir Jafar of Indian polity” who went overseas seeking help from foreign forces to become a

‘nawab’ in India, and demanded his apology.

“It would not be an aberration to say that Rahul Gandhi is a present-day Mir Jafar of Indian polity. What he has done in London is the same thing that Mir Jafar did,” he told a press conference.

“Rahul Gandhi did the same thing during his visit to London. He invited foreign forces to come to India. Shehzada wants to become a nawab. Shehzada has sought help from the East India Company to become a nawab,” Patra charged. Mir Jafer, a former Nawab of Bengal, signed an agreement surrendering to the British army that heralded the start of the British rule in India and his name is often used to refer to a traitor.

Hitting back, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the BJP will be seen as “Jaichands” in history and claimed its ideological forefathers were British apologists.

“You want to become

Jaichand of democracy.... You will be called Jaichands in history if you accord more importance to your friend and not to the country. We urge you to think about the country and not your friend,” Khera said, adding that it is an irony that people whose ideological forefathers have been historically known to be the apologists for the British and today they are giving us lectures on patriotism.

Jaichand, a king from the Gahadavala dynasty of northern India, is often referred to as a traitor who went overseas seeking help from foreign forces.

Khera also said the ruling BJP is just a tenant and not the owner of democracy and asserted that holding the government to account does not amount to criticising the nation.

Noting that Gandhi will not apologise, he said criticising the works of the government does not amount to criticising the country.

JAIPUR, MAR 21 (PTI):

Amid continuing protests by private doctors, the Rajasthan Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill that gives people the right to free emergency treatment at government hospitals and privately-run establishments.

The Rajasthan Right to Health Bill, 2022 was passed by voice vote.

The bill gives every Rajasthan resident the right to emergency treatment and care “without prepayment of requisite fee or charges” by any public health institution, health care establishment and designated health care centres.

After emergency care,

stabilisation and referral of the patient, if they do not pay the requisite charges, the government will reimburse the health care provider. Replying during a debate, Health Minister Parsardi Lal Meena said the bill looks after the interests of the public. Commenting on the agitation by private doctors, the minister said all suggestions, including those from the doctors, in the select committee report have been accepted. “The doctors are agitating despite their suggestions being accepted. This is not justified. They are demanding withdrawal of the bill, is it justified?” he asked.

Restore Red Notice against Choksi: CBI to Interpol body

NEW DE LHI, MAR 21 (PTI): The CBI has asked an Interpol body to restore the Red Notice against fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, saying its decision to drop his name from the list was based on mere “imaginary conjunctures and unproven surmises” and had serious shortcomings, overreach of mandate and mistakes.

Red Notice is the highest level of alert by the 195-member strong International Police cooperation organisation Interpol to locate and provisionally arrest a fugitive pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) said the Commission for Control of

Army to install green hydrogen-based power plants along border with China

NEW DELHI, MAR 21

(PTI): The Indian Army on Tuesday said it has set in motion a process for installation of a green hydrogenbased micro grid power plant project in the forward areas along the northern borders, a move that comes amid the eastern Ladakh border row with China.

The project is being implemented in forward areas which are not connected by national or state power grids.

The Army said it signed an agreement with the National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable En-

ergy Limited (NTPC REL) on Tuesday for the initiative.

India on January 4 approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore to develop a green hydrogen production capacity of five million tonnes a year by 2030.

“In line with the ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission’, the Indian Army has put in motion the process for installation of a green hydrogen based micro grid power plant project in the forward areas along the Northern borders which are not connected by national/

state grids,” the Army said.

It said requisite land on lease is being provided for 25 years with a commitment to purchase generated power through a power purchase agreement.

“The proposed projects will be installed by NTPC on Build, Own and Operate (BOO) models at a jointly identified location in Eastern Ladakh,” it said.

“The project entails setting up a solar power plant for hydrolysis of water to produce hydrogen, which, during non-solar hours will provide power through fuel cells,” it said.

Interpol’s Files (CCF) removed Choksi’s name from the Red Notice list in November 2022. The removal of the notice means Choksi can freely travel out of Antigua and Barbuda where he is holed up after fleeing from India in 2018.

The statement was issued by the CBI a day after the media reported the CCF decision that came as a setback to Indian investigating agencies and triggered a huge political uproar.

Based on repeated appeals from Choksi, who is wanted in the Rs 13,000 crore bank fraud in Punjab National Bank, the CCF removed his name from the Red Notice list in November 2022, it said.

The statement said the CBI has taken up with CCF the serious shortcomings, procedural violations, overreach of mandate and mistakes committed by CCF in

the manner of reaching this unfounded and perfunctory decision. Based on new information and serious errors in the decision, the CBI is taking steps for the decision of CCF to be revised, the agency said.

“The CBI continues to exercise available remedial and appellate options within INTERPOL for rectification of this faulty decision and for restoration of Red Notice.”

The CCF has subsequently clarified to the CBI that its decision “in no manner has any determination

on any guilt or innocence of Choksi” for crimes he remains charged in India, the agency added.

The CCF which had removed Choksi’s name from the list of fugitives based on his appeal last year is a separate Interpol body which is “not under the control” of the Interpol Secretariat and is mainly staffed by elected lawyers from different countries where people can challenge decisions to declare them fugitives, the CBI statement said.

The Congress hit out at the Union government over the CCF decision, saying while the Opposition was being targeted by the Enforcement Directorate(ED) and the CBI, its “friend” was being let off.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said talk of patriotism by those giving “protection” to such people is a “joke”.

In a tweet, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said, “’Vipaksh ko ED, CBI, Mitr ko rihaai’ (ED, CBI for the Opposition, let off for friend).”

“They are doing things to divert attention from real issues. Our embassies are being attacked. People who have run away with money from banks, Mehul Choksi, those giving protection to such people talk about patriotism, it is a joke.” Kharge told reporters. “We will ask the government to clarify on this.” The Aam Aadmi Part(AAP) also accused the government of trying to save Choksi.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Raghav Chadha claimed that Choksi’s name was removed from the Interpol’s Red Notices as Indian probe agencies failed to provide “concrete evidence” of the charges slapped on him.

Kejriwal says he wants to work with ‘elder brother’ Modi

NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (PTI): Hours after the home ministry approved the Delhi government’s Budget, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called Prime Minister Narendra Modi his “elder brother” and said he wants to work together with the Centre.

Addressing the Delhi Assembly’s Budget Session, he said Delhi would have seen 10 times more progress had there been no tussles between the Centre and the state government.

“The Delhi government wants to work and not fight. We are tired of fighting and it serves no one. We want to work together with the prime minister, we

do not want any tussle,” he said.

Kejriwal said if the prime minister wishes to win Delhi, he will have to win the hearts of the people of the city first. “This is my mantra to him.”

“You are the elder brother and I am the younger brother. I will reciprocate if you support me. If you want to win the heart of the little brother, love him,” he said. Kejriwal also said the practice of sending the Delhi government’s budget to the Centre for approval is against the basic structure of the Constitution and democracy.

The chief minister said the provision will not

BJP schemes emerge from Bureaucracy: Rahul Gandhi

WAYANAD (KER), MAR

21 (PTI): Taking a dig at the BJP government at the Centre, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the previous UPA government’s ambitious programmes such as the rural job guarantee scheme emerged from the people, whereas the Narendra-Modi-led dispensation’s schemes were formulated by bureaucrats.

Gandhi criticised the ‘centalised’ rule of the BJPled government, comparing it with that of the former UPA governments. Citing the MGNREGA scheme, which he said had been formulated based on people’s inputs during UPA rule, he claimed that the present government’s demonetisation decision came from Modi’s mind and was implemented without consulting the people or the banking system. He said this while interacting with the Congress-led

UDF’s representatives of the local bodies in this hill district, at Kalpetta.

While responding to a question from one of the participants, Rahul said, “I completely agree with you. A lot of schemes are done in a centralised manner, and they are actually not effective because panchayat participation in designing the scheme and

thinking about the scheme is not there.

“If you look at the Congress party schemes, like MNREGA, and you compare them to BJP schemes, you will find that the Congress party schemes emerged from the people, from the panchayats, and the BJP schemes emerged from the bureaucracy,” the Wayanad MP claimed.

Gandhi then went on to elaborate about the launch of the MNREGA scheme, telling people how the idea emerged from a district in Maharashtra and how it was later conceptualised as a national scheme and expanded to the remaining parts of the country.

“MGNREGA emerged from the people of India. People demanded work, and the government responded to that idea. And it took many years for the scheme to be developed after talking to many, many different stakeholders. It was the scheme that emerged from the people of India. It was the wisdom of the people of India that created MGNREGA”, Gandhi said.

He alleged that Modi had ridiculed MGNREGA, but was forced to expand the scheme himself when the country faced the COVID-19 crisis.

stand judicial scrutiny for “even two minutes”.

“The budget had to be presented today. The Centre stopped it. We replied to MHA’s query without making any changes to the budget and they have approved it now. They wanted me to bow down. It’s their ego and nothing else,” he

said.

The chief minister said the Centre’s objection to the Delhi government’s budget was a departure from tradition. “It happened for the first time.”

“It is an attack on the Constitution. Even B R Ambedkar would not have thought of a situation where the central government would stop the presentation of a state government’s budget,” Kejriwal said.

Earlier in the day, sources in the LG office said the MHA had approved the Delhi government’s budget and it was conveyed to the AAP dispensation.

Cong leader Adhir writes to PM on Aadhaar-PAN linking

NEW DELHI, MAR 21 (PTI): Con-

gress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan

Chowdhury on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to extend the deadline by six months for linking PAN card with Aadhaar and remove the Rs 1000 fee.

He has mentioned the Department of Revenue notification which asked people to link their Aadhaar card with their PAN online against payment of Rs 1000 till March 31, 2023 or else their PAN will become inoperative.

“I further request that a maximum number of Indians do live in extremely remote corners of the country where internet facilities are rarely available.

“And unscrupulous touts have started extorting money as fees from these innocent citizens of rural India,” Chowdhury said and urged the Centre to direct post offices to assist the people free of cost.

He said that the situation was turning into a nightmare and would bring extreme misery to most people.

“In this regard, I earnestly request you to instruct the Ministry of Finance,

Department of Revenue, to empower all Local and Sub Post Offices to help people to get their pan card linked with their Aadhaar card free of cost as well as extend the deadline till next six months,” the Congress leader said in his letter to the prime minister.

The last day to link PAN with Aadhaar is March 31, 2023. According to the income tax department, failure to do so will lead to the unlinked PAN becoming inoperative.

The Aadhaar-PAN linking was free before March 31, 2022. A fee of Rs 500 was imposed from April 1, 2022 and was later increased to Rs 1,000 from July 1, 2022.

Taxing time

Across Nagaland, parallel authorities have been operating under the guise of political groups whether genuine or not but that is an established fact. This is felt more intensely in dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland which has earned notoriety as the illegal tax capital of Nagaland since some nine political groups besides state government agencies under various departments including social organisations have reaffirmed the right to collect or levy tax from the public who are already overburdened with tax. collection of money became the order of the day. Joining around a dozen cash collectors of around a dozen departments were nearly ten Naga groups besides those from various civil society organisation, unions and associations. All of them believed that they had the right to collect tax. This phenomenon where one truck had to pay to over two dozen agencies and organisations etc became a real menace that made check gates earn notoriety for the state. Trucks loathe crossing dimapur check gate(s) as drivers have to pay exorbitant amounts to all the authorised, unauthorised and illegal collectors. Recently the ban imposed on sale of cigarettes in dimapur by one political group was brought to public domain by two trade bodies. The two bodies had lamented over this and even questioned the silence of the state government on the issue. They wanted to know if the state government has decided to ban the sale and use of cigarettes because there has been no reaction even days after the news was published ? If cigarettes was sought to be banned, like alcohol, then there should be a notification issued by the government. The ban on cigarettes is also a reflection on how many parallel authorities have sprung up over the decades. ban on items are a dime in a dozen in dimapur in particular and in most cases, the reasons cited are not entirely justified. For instance there had been a ban on sale on imported poultry and eggs including other animals by some unions and associations. This is also a reflection of the abdication of authority by the constitutionally mandated government. There is nothing that goes untaxed not once, nor twice, nor thrice but multiple times. This would make mafia dons in other states green with envy. It may be recalled that the infamous extortion at check gates had led to a huge public uproar since everyone from political groups, state government agencies, organisations, unions were preying on every vehicle and item crossing the gates. These gates were eventually dismantled in 2019 following a hugely successful operation against taxation launched by the public Action committee under the Naga council. However the collectors were back and so were the check gates. This led then Governor of Nagaland prof. Jagdish Mukhi to prevail upon the state government to do its duty and which led to issuance of an order on May 19,2022 for closure of all check gates, except inter-state gates while those manned by state government departments will have to close down by May 31. Strangely but not surprisingly, some cSOs in dimapur wanted a relaxation of the ban for dMc. The new government has to place this on top of its agenda if Nagaland is to progress.

I have been crucified with Christ… —Galatians 2:20

The inescapable spiritual need each of us has is the need to sign the death certificate of our sin nature. I must take my emotional opinions and intellectual beliefs and be willing to turn them into a moral verdict against the nature of sin; that is, against any claim I have to my right to myself. Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ….” He did not say, “I have made a determination to imitate Jesus Christ,” or, “I will really make an effort to follow Him” —but— “I have been identified with Him in His death.” Once I reach this moral decision and act on it, all that Christ accomplished for me on the Cross is accomplished in me. My unrestrained commitment of myself to God gives the Holy Spirit the opportunity to grant to me the holiness of Jesus Christ.

“…it is no longer I who live….” My individuality remains, but my primary motivation for living and the nature that rules me are radically changed. I have the same human body, but the old satanic right to myself has been destroyed.

“…and the life which I now live in the flesh,” not the life which I long to live or even pray that I live, but the life I now live in my mortal flesh— the life which others can see, “I live by faith in the Son of God….” This faith was not Paul’s own faith in Jesus Christ, but the faith the Son of God had given to him (see Ephesians 2:8). It is no longer a faith in faith, but a faith that transcends all imaginable limits— a faith that comes only from the Son of God.

SPEECHES ON NAGA REPUBLIC DAY

Speech of Q. Tuccu, the Yaruiwo (President) of the GPRN

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! My dear countrymen, On this historic national occasion I greet you all in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We are thankful to Him for the bountiful blessings and the never failing guidance and mercy upon us.

This is the day to remember the glory of our history and the national decision our people have taken to free ourselves from the yoke of oppressors and govern our country by ourselves. We are really proud of the historic Naga National Independence Day that was declared on August 14, 1947.

Ironically, India responded with the most brutal unruly armed forces never seen anywhere in the civilized world, But we stayed the course upholding our rights. The world at large is the living witness to the horrible military oppressions and the political plight in Nagalim. Today we pay homage

to our great leaders who have laid down our political foundation and shown us the national salvation line. They are the pillars of our freedom movement and the pioneers of our Naga nation. They made the Naga people understand their inherent sovereign right which is the source of their political inspiration. We will never betray them and the cause dear to the Naga people, but cherish them always in our hearts and minds.

My dear countrymen, The 1997 ceasefire agreement between the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) and the Government of India (GA is but to prepare the ground for principle-based negotiations and solution. We took the pain and patience in explaining the unique Naga history and the truth of our national issue to the Government of India. It took us five years to make the authorities of India understand on the Naga issue and get the unique history

of the Nagas recognized by the Government of India in the year 2002. This is a milestone achievement in the Indo-Naga political talks. It took us another 13 years of gruelling negotiations which has resulted in signing the historic Framework Agreement on the 3rd August, 2015. Our political identity as a sovereign people is well recognized and protected by this agreement. But in the years that followed, the Government of India started to fiddle with what has been agreed upon. Today the fate of the Framework Agreement hangs in balance as the commitment of the Government of India fluctuates wildly every now and then.

My dear countrymen, The world at large is keenly watching how India handles the Framework Agreement because it has something to do with the high sounding speech of the Indian Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi and how he proclaimed

before the world that he had solved the longest insurgency problem in Southeast Asia. However, the hard fact remains that the politics of “hypocrisy and flattery” is raising its ugly heads again as the Government of India is only looking for an escape route to dilute the political significance of the Framework Agreement.

My dear countrymen, We have made our stand very loud and clear to the Government of India on the issue of the Naga flag and constitution which are indispensable and inviolable parts of the recognized sovereignty and unique history of the Nagas. And the way to handle any situation that might arise has been well defined in no uncertain term during the 315’ May, 2022 Emergency National Assembly when we took the stand before God and before the Naga people that NSCN will uphold and protect the unique Naga history and the Naga National

principle at any cost. We are now simply waiting how the Government of India will pick up the threads of the Indo-Naga political talks with correct narrative and not for its own convenience.

My dear countrymen,

The absurdity of the situation regarding Indo-Naga political talks is therefore, entirely the making of the Government of India as its commitment to the Framework Agreement turned unsavoury with each passing days. All the way it is only ‘all bluff and bluster’. No seriousness! This led us to the fact that the Government of India is planning clandestinely to strike the Nagas with all its state machinery.

Thus, there is trust deficit on the part of the Government of India.

What is to be done in the event of failure of talks?

We have to work out survival strategy. We must live and that this final show down must be a battle to decide our

future. The fight is going to be tough, but it is to be noted that ours is not a contest of strength, it is a matter of right and wrong, just and unjust. Therefore, the truth shall triumph in the long run. Notwithstanding the callous manner of handling the Naga issue by the Government of India, we have carried the talks forward with total commitment and conviction, because no sacrifice is too great when it comes to defending the historical and political rights of the Nagas. Let us therefore keep our spirits high and never allow despair to overcome us, because the deciding factor for solution is in our total faith in the sovereign God and our national issue. Significantly, it is for the Government of India to put its acts together and get back the lost ground. The ball is, therefore, in the court of India.

Gen. (Retd.) M.B. Neokpao Konyak, President, GPRN/NSCN Naga Unification Camp, Khehoyi

“…But as for me and my household, we shall serve the Lord” Joshua 25:15.

Dear comrades, friends, Naga well-wishers, ladies and gentlemen. I convey my profound revolutionary greetings to everyone who have assisted, contributed, in positive words and action, toward the greater good of our common cause. I acknowledge the ever unforgettable Naga patriots who are no more with us today, having given their lives and completing their tasks for the Naga nation. God bless their offspring!

I sincerely applaud the Naga tribal Hohos, the village headmen and elders, the Churches and peace oriented Civil societies and organizations who have upheld the unresolved Naga issue in their thoughts and prayers.

The Naga Republic day is

a celebration of each citizen’s responsibility in nation building. The power and authority, directly or indirectly, is in the hands of the Naga people. GPRN/NSCN under the leadership of President Gen. (Rtd.) M.B. Neokpao Konyak and Ato Kilonser N. Kitovi Zhimomi have expounded the republican ideals inherited from the past leaders. We will never deviate from this principle. Every Naga national worker, senior or junior, have equal responsibility to take forward the idea of Naga republic as was envisaged by the Naga pioneers.

Naga Republic day symbolizes maturity of our struggle, cohesiveness of our people, uncompromising goal and vision for our common future. We believe that Government of India (GOI), in the course of political talks with Working

Akato Chophi, President NSCN/GPRN

Friends, Nagas, Comrades and Compatriots.

First and foremost of all, my ‘Revolutionary Salute’ to one and all on this auspicious occasion, the 44th Naga Republic Day. The Naga History and its cause has been handed down to us from generation to generation, from fathers to sons, from predecessors to successors, from oral history to documentations, books, texts, records, events etc. Yet it will seem unfair if the contributions made by our founding fathers are left in the back burner, but which needs to be appreciated and acknowledged and to also serve as a reminder to this contemporary age of young upcoming generations.

The commendable but selfless acts and extreme sacrifices made by our pioneers and visionary leaders that took shape on this very day, the 21st of March 1980 under the banner and flagship of NSCN, cannot be ignored but need to retrospect and be recognised with due honour. The legacy of this benchmark left by our pioneers also did prove to be a stepping stone for future posterity, that as a result reignited and rejuvenated the spirit of nationalism and patriotism. The fact is, Nagas are generally known for bravery and chivalry, yet simple natured. A proud race, yet naive and gullible people and who were unfortunately coaxed and coerced, into empty pep talks of nothing but just empty vessels of political rhetorics. The Nagas were made believe and lured into the era of doom by certain malicious masterminds, under the guise of sugar coated appeasement policies, which in reality were actually insidious schemes. Thus, in these whirlpool of confusions, chaos and fuss created by the brainchild of our adversaries, the opportunist minds, right away jumped into the fray of the political mess and unrest and who blatantly took advantage of the situation and forged weapons of political ‘Whiplash’ to counter and subdue the Nagas. As unfortunate as it seems, many Nagas (including few opportunistic leaders) were bedazzled into these obnoxious political hypnotism with diabolic designs which slowly but gradually began to breed inside Naga society from both outside and within, pushing Naga’s rights over the horizon to be nearly damned into obscurity and oblivion. However, the intrinsic intellect of some of our visionary leaders and perhaps even backed and guided by the instinctive ‘Divine Intervention’ were able to smell a rat, and were positive that ‘All Is Certainly Not Well’ in the aura of air, that was literally polluted with the foul stench of subversive forces coming into play, and who were hell bent to derail the Naga Political Journey and hold the Naga issue and the Naga people at ransom. This, as a result instigated, constrained and compelled, yet propelled our leaders to take necessary steps and create a launching pad to take this mighty leap, to counter and to defend our legitimate rights. Notwithstanding, I too, on behalf of my Government, proudly take advantage of this privilege, in bringing you greetings and good tidings of our Political endeavours.

I also appreciate and acknowledge each and every individuals, be it Nagas or non Nagas, sympathizers or friends, my peers or my brothers-inarms, for the sacrifices, prayers, supports and solidarity, and all those of you who had contributed in your own individual potential capabilities.

On this day, let us feel grateful and appreciate all those veterans who are now honourably retired from National service and those few who are still serving, voluntarily. Let us also pay our richest tribute to all our fallen heroes, who from since day one, had struggled, suffered and faced trials and tribulations and who went down fighting and paid with their own precious lives for the people’s cause. We also remember, honour and pay homage to all those Naga warriors and defenders of Naga homeland, and with my deepest respect and humble self, I hail and glorify the honour of our legendary pioneers (both living or departed), our pathfinders our torchbearers, our forerunners, and our “UNSUNG HEROES AND WARRIORS” for your unfathomable chivalry, valour, courage and undaunted selfless services for the Nations. Having said all, the issue of the protracted Naga imbroglio is neither of social cause, nor economic, nor military, nor religious, but purely ‘Political’ in nature and as such, if any solution, that is acceptable and honourable to all is to be achieved or arrived at (sooner than later), it can be facilitated, addressed and hammered out only through the ‘Political Pathway’ and none other. Last, but not the least, I beseech and call upon my fellow Countrymen and women to remain grateful and wait upon the Lord in prayers and anticipation to pave us ways for the enlightenment of the Naga’s quest for peace and stability.

Committtee (WC), Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs), have clearer understanding of the IndoNaga political problem in its correct perspective.

I urge the current dispensation at Kohima, headed by Nagaland state Chief Minister, to shift focus from electoral politics to facilitating and resolving the Indo-Naga political problem. Rampant extortion and corruption in our social, political and economic spheres is the Achilles’ heel of the Naga people. Solution to Indo-Naga problem is the only answer to the perennial burden on the people. I remind the Naga public and leaders at all level to seriously pursue and assist in salvaging our history and identity as facilitators and stakeholders. The GOI must seriously re-

alize the long term danger of harboring and legitimizing the mushrooming obstructive elements forming new groups. The wayward, unprincipled wealth diggers, status and position addicts do not auger well for either GOI or Nagas because their sole aim is to garner wealth by any means and stay relevant. Politically immature and unproven, restless leaders cannot convince the Naga people on the Naga political front. Creating fear psychosis through arms and burdening the public is a crime.

The AGREED POSITION and negotiated status papers are a sacred political documents widely known and accepted by all Nagas. The hard work of GOI interlocutors, representatives and Convener and Co-Conveners of WC, NNPGs have earne d the appreciation of

the Naga people. I am hopeful that GOI and WC, NNPGs will not be distracted by activities of defectors and opportunists desiring to be noticed through threats and intimidations against politicians, contractors, traders and commercial outlets in Nagaland. I appeal to the apex Naga tribal bodies, the Village Headmen and elders, the Churches, the concerned Civil societies and common citizens to not stay silent on the primary task of resolutely standing for honorable and acceptable solution to the Indo-Naga political problem. As we celebrate our Republic Day, we owe it to our forefathers, the fallen patriots. We owe it to our children and our grandchildren and those after them. They deserve a better future!

Gen (Rtd) Thinoselie M Keyho, President, NNC

Nagas are one, with one goal, one passion, one Flag, one Constitution, one people and one Nation. Together, definitely we can overcome the occupational illegal forces of nefarious oppression. We are a free people, and we shall never surrender our freedom to any nation at the cost of blood money or puppet positions of a foreign state. Nagas are not Indians, they shall never be Indians and the Nagas have nothing to do with the new Independent India.

The Nagas are highly despised and discriminated by the Hindus because of our beef and likewise we are despised by the Muslims because of our pork as was truthfully stated in the Naga Club Memorandum of 1929. We are frowned upon and despised as some lower caste of Indian societies that we were never a part of and never wish to be. We have never asked to be a part of the Indian Union to be ruled and governed by the Constitution of India, nor intend to partake in any pagan philosophy of India neither by consent nor by coercion, nor be a part of an oppressive ideology of India that treats its own citizens with a discriminatory and derogatory caste system of human classification and oppression.

The expression of our political freedom had started much before the 16th century, whereby we collected huge yearly tributes from the neighboring kingdoms as a sign of our sovereignty and supremacy over them, and in the failure of timely payment of tributes as per our terms and conditions, the Nagas took punitive measures against those nationalities by plundering their communities resulting in heavy loss of lives and property of many of their people.

Alexander Mackenzie in his book ‘History of the Relations of the Government with the Hill Tribes of the North-East Frontier of Bengal’ writes, “In 1851, no fewer than 22 Naga raids were reported, in which 35 persons were killed, 10 wounded and 113 taken captives. From 1854-1865 there had been 19 Angami raids in which 232 British subjects had been killed, wounded and carried off and these losses have occurred when a chain of outposts was in existence from Barapathar to Assalo.” On 10th Jan, 1929, the Naga Club on behalf of the Nagas declared and put on record, “Leave us alone to determine for ourselves for sovereignty as in ancient times”. Subsequently, the British Parliament under a Govt. of British India Empire Notification declared the Naga inhabited areas as NAGA EXCLUDED AREA in 1935 outside of the British India Empire. The first and the second Indian General Elections were rejected by the Nagas in toto. However, the betrayal by the so-called 16 Point Agreement took place deceitfully, committed by a section of the avaricious Naga people and the analogous infamous surrendering Shillong Accord was signed by the Representatives of Underground Organizations (RUO) accepting the Indian Constitution albeit under duress. These are acts of treason against the Naga nation, deviating from the 1951 Plebiscite, and should never be repeated. The Nagas shall unwaveringly stand forever on the Plebiscite of 1951 whereby 99.9% of the Naga people voted in favor of Naga sovereignty and the Naga National Council (NNC), The Naga Political Movement cannot be categorized as a secessionist movement because of its unchallengeable political history. God has blessed us with the Naga Nation and we are the custodians to defend its existence and upkeep to glorify God just as the Israelites do to

defend their God given Promised Land, the nation of Israel. To have a vital written public document before the ‘International community’, we had put on record our existence as a free and sovereign people through the Simon Comission of 1929, and also later on formally declared our Naga Independence on 14th Aug, 1947, a full day before the new independent India. Our unwillingness to be under the rule of any other country is again demonstrated by the Naga plebiscite of 1951. We stand by the 1951 Plebiscite and we all remain united under the Plebiscite. Nagaland is an undisputed land of our Naga Nation, and the birth right of our freedom is not for sale. Our oppressors have tortured, maimed, killed us, violated our women and children by the most depraved and perverted inhuman Indian army, desecrated our land and our churches, amongst many other crimes against humanity. They may kill and take our lives, but they can never kill the idea and the spirit of our Naga Nation.

We must be cautious not to blindly follow the purchased marionette leaders who are misleading the people to surrender into an Indian bandwagon, which is an act of treason and a heinous crime against the Naga soul. Some have been going to Delhi with charter of demands on the pretext of a Naga political solution while keeping the public in the dark of the talks. We cannot remain in bondage of India’s carrot and stick politics. Let us be citizens worthy of the Naga Nation. Loyalty to ones country is an act of patriotism that gives purpose to one’s life towards one’s country. Only when we are a patriotic citizen then can we look with promise towards a future with honor, pride, dignity and hope of a bright future without regrets. We are wonderfully created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, to live with dignity and integrity in the image of God and to live by the sweat of our own brow is the true meaning of life. As honorable and patriotic Naga citizens, we cannot behave like leeches sucking the money of the Hindus and Muslims of India, more so through corrupt means that would incur the wrath and the curse of our Almighty God. If we envision a dream of a Naga Nation with positivity, it must begin with love for our own country and people and be willing to pay the price of patriotism at all costs. Let us strive to lead a life of independence in the same footsteps of our legendary erudite forefathers. We must be strong and courageous for our God will not forsake us and we shall be successful and prosperous in all our endeavors.

We must stop waiting for things to happen, but rather unite to make things happen. Let nobody divide the Nagas further. The solution to the Naga Political struggle shall neither come from our military might nor shall it depend on the size of our population or the size of our land. But the solution will come from the facts of our unquestionable and unchallengeable legitimate rights and it is this truth that will set us free under the watchful guidance of our Almighty God. We love freedom, democracy, non-violence and liberty. We are not asking for Independence from India. We only ask the unsolicited Indian occupationary forces to leave our land so that we may be free from oppression and that freedom reigns and enable us to exist as friendly nations as each others neighbor in a civilized world.

HC slams Punjab cops for Amritpal escape

CHANDIGARH, MAR 21 (AGENCIES):

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today slammed Punjab police and asked them to submit a status report in their operation against Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh.

“You have 80,000 cops. What were they doing? How did Amritpal Singh escape?” the High Court asked Punjab government. The court remarked that this is an intelligence failure of the state’s police.

The court’s remarks come amid the Punjab Police action against the Khalistan leader and members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’.

The Punjab police told the court that they launched a major crackdown against Amritpal Singh on Saturday, and have managed to arrest 120 of his supporters.

The elusive preacher, however, gave them the slip and again escaped their dragnet when his cavalcade was intercepted in Jalandhar district. Amritpal Singh, whom the government de-

The governor said the government was committed to provide assistance in this regard to suitably address the grievances of people of the eastern districts, bridge the development deficit and bring these areas on par with rest of the State at the earliest possible.

Singh has been active in Punjab for the last few years and is often seen escorted by armed supporters. He claims to be a follower of Khalistani separatist and terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and is known as “Bhindranwale 2.0” among his supporters.

Earlier today, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said strict action will be taken against those try-

ing to disturb peace and harmony in the state.

“We will not spare any force working against the country. People of this state want peace and progress,” Mann said, adding that no incident of violence has been reported since the operation to arrest the Khalistani leader began.

The crackdown comes a month after Amritpal Singh and his supporters broke into a police station with swords and guns for the release of one of his aides.

Six police officials were injured in the clash.

The preacher managed to give police a slip after changing his vehicle on Saturday when police had launched a crackdown against him and his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’. He was initially in his Mercedes vehicle but later switched to Brezza SUV during the police action. In a new photo that appeared on social media, Amritpal Singh could be seen riding pillion on a bike wearing a pink turban and black goggles, suggesting that he tried to change his appearance to get away from the eyes of police. A CCTV footage also showed him on the bike. Another CCTV footage of the Jalandhar toll plaza,

(PTI): Army chief Gen Manoj Pande on Tuesday said India will continue to face terrorism and internal security challenges in the future and the security forces of the country will “unitedly” tackle them. He was speaking after inaugurating the All India Police Commando Competition organised by the federal contingency force National Security Guard (NSG) at its garrison in Manesar here.

Gen Pande said the new-age technology has enabled the enemy to perpetrate its activities using drones, internet, cyberspace and social media.

“You all know that terrorism and internal security situation is affecting our country in different ways. We are facing these challenges unitedly. Due to this, the (security) situation is improving in various states.

“These challenges will continue in the future too.

Some of these challenges

will be there for a long time, some will be present indirectly while some will remain secretly”, he said.

Gen Pande said the “possibility” of terrorist attacks taking place in the country cannot be ignored as he praised intelligence and security forces for foiling and thwarting a number of such designs and networks.

He praised the NSG, a federal counter-terrorist force, for developing special skills in bomb detection and disposal, sniping, countering drones as well as effectively coordinating with other security agencies.

‘Not concerned who belongs to BJP or Cong’: SC on ED director’s extension

NEW DELHI, MARCH 21

(IANS): Supreme Court on Tuesday orally observed that it is not concerned with the political affiliations of the petitioners, who have challenged the third extension given to ED Director S.K. Mishra and also the CVC Amendment Act 2021.

During the hearing, a bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and Vikram Nath orally observed: “We are not concerned with who belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party and who belongs to Congress.”

The bench made this observation after the amicus curiae, senior advocate

KV Viswanathan submitted that his submissions will be purely on the law and he is not concerned with the politics of the petitioners or the individual cases. In the previous hearing in the matter on Monday, Viswanathan told the Supreme Court that the extension was illegal, citing the apex court’s decisions in Vineet Narain & others v. Union of India and Common Cause v. Union of India to support his contention. He further added that the issue was not about the incumbent director at all, rather it was about the principle.

Govt hikes windfall tax on diesel export to Rs. 1 per ltr

NEW DELHI, MAR 21

(PTI): The government has hiked the windfall profit tax on export of diesel to

Re 1 per litre while the levy on domestically produced crude oil has been cut by a fifth, according to an official order.

The levy on crude oil produced by companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has been reduced to Rs 3,500 per tonne from Rs 4,400 per tonne, the order dated March 20 said.

The government raised the tax on export of diesel to

Re 1 per litre from Rs 0.50, and the same on overseas shipments of ATF remains at nil. The new tax rates come into effect from March 21, the order said.

Crude oil pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed is refined and converted into fuels like petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

The tax rates are reviewed every fortnight based

on average oil prices in the previous two weeks.

India first imposed windfall profit taxes on July 1 last year, joining a growing number of nations that tax super normal profits of energy companies. At that time, export duties of Rs 6 per litre (USD 12 per barrel) each were levied on petrol and ATF and Rs 13 a litre (USD 26 a barrel) on diesel. A Rs 23,250 per tonne (USD 40 per barrel) windfall profit tax on domestic crude production was also levied. The export tax on petrol was scrapped in the very first review and that on ATF was done away with at the last review on March 4.

Reliance Industries Ltd, which operates the world’s largest single-location oil refinery complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat, and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy are primary exporters of fuel in the country.

The government levies tax on windfall profits made by oil producers on any price they get above a threshold of USD 75 per barrel.

The levy on fuel exports is based on cracks or margins that refiners earn on overseas shipments. These margins are primarily a difference between the international oil price realised and the cost.

The report also stated the most valued companies across the world, Business Today reported.

Chinese tech company ByteDance, financial services corporation Ant Group and Elon Musk-led SpaceX are the most valued companies in the world.

These companies are called hectocorn or companies which are valued over $100 billion. Tiplati noted that it has picked up all the data from Crunchbase and Tracxn to collate the report.

ByteDance, which is the parent company of TikTok, is valued at $180 billion. Its valuation has soared by $40 billion in the last one year, the report

3 Municipals, 23 town councils firm on demand

(From p-1)

The three union and ward presidents had also submitted a joint representation addressed to principal secretary of Municipal Affairs Department. In the representation, Thejao Sekhose (AKMWP) Zasivikho Zakiesato (DUCCF) and Limanungsang (AWUMT), strongly urged upon the State government to review or redraft the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 according to its applicability with living standards of citizens of Nagaland and take into consideration the social, customary and traditional practice of Nagas, before it conducted election to urban local bodies (ULBs).

The three recalled that on March 10, 2023 reminder letter they had categorically mentioned various clauses

that should be deleted from the NM Act.

“If the government has agreed to our demand, we place our demand for official publication in the official Gazette of the Government of Nagaland, a copy of the booklet to be distributed to all the municipal and town councils and for wide publication both in electronic and print media,” the representation stated.

Referring to the resolution adopted at the consultative meeting held at State Banquet Hall on March 9, 2022, they pointed out that none of the three municipal unions were invited to the meeting nor did they attend and for which they were not aware of the content of the resolution.

They further clarified that the three municipal

unions in no way opposed the judgment of any court with regard to conduct of election to ULBs in Nagaland. The three said they were of the view that the State government should listen to the voice of the people – total review of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001.

3-point resolution: Meanwhile, a meeting of municipal and town councils of various districts of Nagaland, including AKMWP, AWUMT and DUCCF, held at 2K Hotel, Kohima on March 21 under the aegis of Municipal and Town Council of Nagaland (MTCN), decided to stand together in the larger interest of Nagas and to uphold Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India.

After a thorough de -

liberation on the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, the meeting resolved to strongly urge upon the State government to review the entire content of the Act, its applicability, usages according to the reality and practicability of Naga people before holding ULB elections.

The house also resolved not to allow any form of taxation on property, i.e., tax on land and buildings in municipalities and towns.

In the event of the government failing to review the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, the meeting resolved that the three municipal unions and town councils would not participate nor allow any candidate to contest or file nomination. This was stated in a press release by Municipal and Town Council of Nagaland.

Edtech company BYJU’S which is one of the top Indian start-ups in the country did not get a spot in the top 10. It occupied the 18th spot on the list. Founded by Byju Raveendran, BYJU’s is valued at $22 billion.

Among the startups, BYJU’S and OYO are the only decacorns India has. Decacorn refers to a company which is valued at or over $10 billion.

The report also highlighted that India has maintained its position as the third largest start-up ecosystem, after the US and China. India continues to house the world’s thirdlargest number of unicorns. Its share is about 5.94 per cent of the world, the report stated.

NDPP youth body reacts to NPF leaders’ statements

(From p-1) It further reminded the NPF that despite having several MLAs it had failed to even field a single candidate for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, but rather extended support to the Congress candidate even though it had a history of opposing the Congress and its policies for decades.

Rejecting the NPF president’s claim that a party that had an alliance with a national party was not a regional party, the youth wing asked the NPF why it had withdrawn its candidature and allied with the Congress and extended full support to the latter in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, going

to the extent of sharing the platform with Rahul Gandhi.

NDPPYO said it was time for the NPF leadership to do deep introspection and question themselves why they had been rejected by the Naga people, whether they had betrayed the confidence which the people had once reposed on them and whether they had let down the high ideals of their past leaders. Perhaps it was time for them to look inwards, instead of pointing fingers at others. For, leadership came with responsibilities and ultimately leaders were answerable to the people, the communiqué pointed out.

Blizzard, dust storm hit Mongolia, causing low visibility

ULAN BATOR, MAR

21 (IANS): Heavy blizzards and strong dust storms are sweeping across much of Mongolia, causing poor visibility on roads, the country’s weather monitoring agency said on Tuesday.

The heavy snow and snowstorms are now hitting central Mongolia such as national capital Ulan Bator and Uvurkhangai province, as well as several other provinces in the eastern and northern regions, reports Xinhua news agency. In addition, strong winds and dust storms are sweeping through the southern Gobi provinces such as Umnugovi, Dundgovi and Dornogovi, with a wind speed up to 27 metres per second, it said.

Google suspends Chinese shopping app amid security concerns

HONG KONG, MAR

21 (AP): Google has suspended the Chinese shopping app Pinduoduo on its app store after malware was discovered in versions of the app from other sources. Google said in a statement Tuesday that it suspended the Pinduoduo app on the Google Play app store out of “security concerns” and that it was investigating the matter.

The suspension of the Pinduoduo app –mainly used in China –comes amid heightened U.S.-China tensions over Chinese-owned apps such as TikTok, which some U.S. lawmakers say could be a national security threat. They allege that such apps could be used to spy on American users. Pinduoduo is a popular e-commerce app in China which often offers discounts if users team up to buy multiples of an item.

Japan’s PM offers Ukraine support as China’s Xi Jinping backs Russia

KYIV, MAR 21(AP): Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made a surprise visit Tuesday to Kyiv, stealing some of the global attention from Asian rival President Xi Jinping of China, who is in Moscow to show support for Russia against the West over the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The two visits, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) apart, highlighted the nearly 13-month-old war’s repercussions for international diplomacy as countries line up behind Moscow or Kyiv. They follow a week in which China and Japan both enjoyed diplomatic successes that have emboldened their foreign policy. After talks with Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin said a Chinese peace plan could provide a basis for a settlement of the fighting in Ukraine when the West is ready for it, but he added that Kyiv’s Western allies so far have shown no interest in that.

“It looks like the West indeed intends to fight Russia until the last Ukrainian,” Putin said, pointing out at a British plan to provide Ukraine with tank rounds containing depleted urani-

um. “If that happens, Russia will respond accordingly, given that the collective West is starting to use weapons with a nuclear component.” U.S. officials have said any peace plan coming from the Putin-Xi meeting would be unacceptable to Washington because it would only ratify Moscow’s conquests to date and give Russia time to plan for a renewed offensive. Kishida, who is to chair the Group of Seven summit in May, will meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Ukrainian capital, coinciding with Xi’s talks for a second day with Putin in the Russian capital.

NATO to hold Ukraine meeting despite Hungary’s objections

BRUSSELS, MAR 21

(AP): NATO SecretaryGeneral Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday that he would call a high-level meeting of the military organization’s main forum for cooperation with Ukraine next month despite objections from Hungary.

The NATO-Ukraine Commission hasn’t met at ministerial level for several years. The last meeting was held at a lower level in 2019 in Kyiv, with NATO ambassadors joining Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and some of his Cabinet ministers, about three years before Russia’s fullscale invasion.

Hungary and Ukraine are at loggerheads over a language law adopted in Ukraine in 2017 which the nationalist government in Budapest insists stops members of the Transcarpathian

ethnic minority from studying in Hungarian. Hungary has routinely blocked NATO-Ukraine Commission meetings since.

“This is an established framework. I have the mandate to convene it,” said Stoltenberg, who chairs NATO’s meetings. “In respect for the issues that Hungary has raised I have not convened that for some time, but now I will continue to convene the meetings

of the NATO-Ukraine Commission.”

He said the meeting will be held on the sidelines of a gathering of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels on April 4-5, and added: “I’ve not planned more meetings but of course this will not be a one-off event.”

He noted that Zelenskyy has been invited to attend NATO’s summit in Lithuania in July. Stoltenberg also said that Hungary’s minority concerns would be discussed at next month’s meeting.

NATO makes its decisions by consensus, and Stoltenberg declined to say why he was insisting on calling the meeting over Hungary’s head. But Hungary has continually pushed back a date to vote on the NATO membership of Finland and Sweden, delaying their entry with little explanation.

ed as saying. U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel tweeted about the “two very different European-Pacific partnerships” that unfolded Tuesday.

“Kishida stands with freedom, and Xi stands with a war criminal,” Emanuel said, referring to last week’s action by the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Putin, saying it wanted to put him on trial for the abductions of thousands of children from Ukraine. Washington is accelerating its delivery of Abrams tanks to Ukraine, choosing to send a refurbished older version that can be ready faster, U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

No other party said that it would support the attempt by Vox’s 52 lawmakers to topple the Socialist-led government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

In a move that has been widely panned by other political parties and Spanish media, Vox leader Santiago Abascal has broken with custom and isn’t presenting himself as an alternative prime minister. Instead, in an attempt to lure votes from centrist and leftist legislators, Vox convinced a former communist party member and university professor to lead the no-confidence measure.

Ramón Tamames, 89, who was a lawmaker in the 1970s and 1980s, has pledged that if the vote were to succeed, his only act as prime minister would be to immediately call for a na-

tional election to coincide with a local election already scheduled for May 28.

Tamames has said that he doesn’t agree with many of Vox’s positions, which include its negation of climate change, unfounded charges that migrants are linked to more violent crimes, and its attacks on feminism. But he does share the party’s concerns regarding Catalan and Basque separatism and its patriotic defense of the flag and monarchy.

Vox announced its intention to bring the no-confidence motion after Sánchez’s government reformed laws on sedition and embezzlement to relieve the legal pressure on Catalan separatists last December.

“Señor Abascal, the candidate that you have presented is simply a decoy for

The traditional conservatives of the Popular Party, who lead the parliamentary opposition to the government, have said that they will abstain. Popular Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has criticized the vote as only handing a parliamentary victory to Sánchez, and as unnecessary with a general election due in December.

Sánchez’s coalition with the leftist United We Can party, which governs in a minority supported by smaller regionalist parties, and even separatists in the Catalonia and the Basque regions, is trying to recover from a a recent split over what to do with their own sexual consent law that has inadvertently led to reduced prison terms for hundreds of convicted felons.

Johnson says ‘partygate’ untruths were honest mistake

LONDON, MAR 21 (AP):

Former U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged Tuesday that he misled Parliament about rulebreaking government parties during the coronavirus pandemic — but insisted he never intentionally lied.

Johnson said it never occurred to him that the gatherings — which variously included cake, wine, cheese and a “secret Santa” festive gift exchange — broke the restrictions his own government had imposed on the country.

Britain’s boisterous former leader is set to be grilled by lawmakers on Wednesday over whether he lied when he denied there had been parties in his Downing Street offices in violation of COVID-19 lockdown rules that barred socializing. If found to have lied deliberately, he could be suspended or even lose his seat in Parliament.

In a dossier of written evidence to the House of Commons Committee of Privileges, Johnson acknowledged that “my statements to Parliament that the Rules and Guidance had been followed at all times did not turn out to be correct.”

But he said his statements “were made in good faith and on the basis of what I honestly knew and believed at the time. I did not intentionally or recklessly mislead the House.”

Biden issues first veto, taking on new Republican House

WASHINGTON, MAR

21 (AP): President Joe Biden issued the first veto of his presidency Monday in an early sign of shifting White House relations with the new Congress since Republicans took control of the House in January — a move that serves as a prelude to bigger battles with GOP lawmakers on government spending and the nation’s debt limit.

Biden sought to kill a Republican-authored measure that would ban the government from considering environmental impacts or potential lawsuits when

making investment decisions for people’s retirement plans. In a video released by the White House, Biden said he vetoed the measure because it “put at risk the retirement savings of individuals across the country.” His first veto represents a more confrontational approach at the midway of Biden’s term in office, as he faces a GOPcontrolled House that is eager to undo parts of his policy legacy and investigate his administration and his family. Complicating matters for Biden, several

Democratic senators are up for re-election next year in conservative states, giving them political incentive to put some distance between them and the White House.

French stirs drag on after Macron’s pension plan push

PARIS, MAR 21 (AP):

French garbage collectors, refinery workers and others were striking again on Tuesday against President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to force the divisive bill raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 through without a vote in parliament.

Paris police said Tuesday that 234 people were arrested overnight in the capital mostly for setting fire to garbage in the streets.

Mostly small, scattered protests were held in cities around France, some degenerating into violence late Monday. In Paris, small groups took to the streets to set fire to piles of trash that have formed because of a strike by garbage collectors

Paris police prefect Laurent Nunez said the violence was caused by groups of up to 300 people quickly moving through the capital.

Nunez news broadcaster BFM TV that he ordered an internal investigation after an officer was

filmed punching a man who was walking backwards, making him fall to the ground. The video has been widely shared on French social media.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne expressed the government’s “solidarity” towards 400 police officers who have been injured in

recent days, including 42 overnight.

Macron has planned a series of political meetings on Tuesday with the prime minister, parliamentary leaders and lawmakers from his centrist alliance, one day after the government survived to two no-confidence motions.

The 45-year-old French president, who made the pension plan a centerpiece of his second term, will speak Wednesday on national television — the first time since he made the decision last week to use a government’s special constitutional power to force the bill through parliament. He’s expected to back his government.

tively reinstated a Trumpera ban on federal managers of retirement plans considering factors such as climate change, social impacts or pending lawsuits when making investment choices.

The veto could also help calm some anger from environmentalists who have been upset with the Biden administration for its recent decision to greenlight the Willow oil project, a massive and contentious drilling project in Alaska.

“The president vetoed the bill because it jeopardizes the hard-earned life

savings of cops, firefighters, teachers, and other workers,” White House spokesperson Robyn Patterson said.

But critics say socalled environmental, social and governance investments allocate money based on political agendas, such as a drive against climate change, rather than on earning the best returns for savers. Republicans in Congress who pushed the measure said environmental or social considerations in investments by the government are just another example of being “woke.”

Wednesday afternoon about “partygate,” the scandal over a string of gatherings in government offices in 2020 and 2021. Police eventually issued 126 fines over the late-night soirees, boozy parties and “wine time Fridays,” including one to Johnson, and the scandal helped hasten the end of his three years in office.

Revelations about the gatherings sparked anger among Britons who had followed rules imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus, unable to visit friends and family or even say goodbye to dying relatives in hospitals.

Becky Kummer, spokesperson for the group COVID-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, said Johnson’s claim to have acted in good faith was “sickening.”

“He isn’t fit for public office,” Kummer said.

parties first emerged in late 2021, Johnson initially said that no rules had been broken. He later apologized and said there had been “misjudgments.”

But in the 52-page dossier he said he “honestly believed” the five events he attended, including a sendoff for a staffer and his own surprise birthday party, were “lawful work gatherings.”

”No cake was eaten, and no one even sang ‘Happy Birthday,’” he said of the June 19, 2020, celebration, for which he received a police fine. “The primary topic of conversation was the response to COVID-19.”

Johnson said suggestions that people in government considered themselves to be “in a guidance-free bubble where the requirements we imposed on the rest of the country did not apply” could not be further from the truth.

Two of Uranus’ Moons may have active oceans: NASA study

distant tail of the planet’s magnetosphere. But that explanation doesn’t hold, Cohen said. “An injection would normally have a much broader spread of particles than what was observed.”

The team suspects the particles arise from Ariel and/or Miranda through either a vapour plume similar to that seen on Enceladus or through sputtering -- a process where high-energy particles hit a surface, ejecting other particles into space.

One or two of Uranus’ 27 moons -Ariel and/or Miranda -- likely have oceans beneath their icy surfaces and are actively spewing material into the space environment, according to a study by NASA.

Previously, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune were found as hosts to at least one icy moon that’s pumping particles into its planetary system.

In the study led by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Kannada actor arrested over ‘antiHindutva’ remarks

(APL) in Maryland, US, researchers reanalysed nearly 40-year-old energetic particle and magnetic field data taken by NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft -- the only spacecraft so far to have gone to Uranus. They found a trapped population of energetic particles the spacecraft had observed while departing Uranus -- the turquoise, tilted oddball of the solar system.

“What was interesting was that these particles were so extremely confined

near Uranus’ magnetic equator,” said lead author Ian Cohen, a space scientist at APL. Magnetic waves within the system would normally cause them to spread out in latitude, he explained, but these particles were all cramped near the equator between the moons Ariel and Miranda.

Scientists originally attributed these features to Voyager 2’s possibly having flown through a chance stream of plasma being “injected” from the

FELICITATION

Yet scientists have already suspected Uranus’ five largest moons -- Ariel and Miranda included -- may have subsurface oceans. Voyager 2 images of both moons show physical signs of geologic resurfacing, including possible eruptions of water that froze on the surface.

“The data are consistent with the very exciting potential of there being an active ocean moon there,” Cohen said. “We can always do more comprehensive modelling, but until we have new data, the conclusion will always be limited.” The findings, recently accepted for publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, were also presented at the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in the US. In a clip shared by Prime Video, SRK was seen talking to actor-comedian Bhuvan Bam in a promo, which revealed the release date. The clip shows SRK in front of the camera as ‘Pathaan’, deciding on the opening line. He is heard saying: “Aapni kursi ke peti bandh lo, kyun ki Pathaan aa gaya hain, sirf Prime Video par (Fasten your seat belts, Pathaan is coming)...” He then gets irritated with the lines and tells Bhuvan that they need to try something new. Bhuvan throws in a couple of lines, but SRK does not like them. Taking matters into his own hands, he tells Bhuvan: “I’ll show you.” The superstar goes in front of the camera, and flexes his biceps. He then says: “Pathaan dekhiye sirf Prime Video par” The film will have its digital premiere on March 22. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham in lead roles. Sinha, who is known for his films such as ‘Mulk’, ‘Article 15’, ‘Tum Bin’, ‘Dus’, and ‘Thappad’, is awaiting the release of his upcoming film, the pandemic drama ‘Bheed’. The director, on Tuesday, took to his Instagram to share a lengthy note about the film and made a heartfelt and honest appeal to the audience to judge the film for what it intends to convey. He shared that the film’s work related to its release was completed on Monday and that he himself saw the whole film for the very first time after all the work was done.

Sharing the film’s trailer, he wrote in Hindi, “Hello friends, ‘Bheed’ is coming to theatres on March 24. The work was going on for the film in the run up to its release till last night. I myself saw the final output for the first time after it was done in

the night. I felt good and it gave me an affirmation that I have managed to make the film that I intended to make. It’s quite good. I also wanted to seek your help.

All those people, whom you think would want to watch this film, please share this trailer with them.

Share it with them, call them up and remind them about the release date of March 24 and make a plan to see it”.

He added, “Films like these are very difficult both in terms of their making and their subsequent release but it’s our responsibility to make such films

and more than that it’s important that the audience watches such films. I need one more help, please don’t stress yourselves on how did it get censored, how will it get released why the trailer was removed from the YouTube channel of T-Series, why Bhushan Kumar’s name was removed, how much is the advance booking, how much would it earn by the end of first week.”

He said that these are multi-front fights that a filmmaker has to put up with and this is no different. He wrote, “These are the fights of filmmakers, we are fighting and we will do it on our own. All these thoughts rob the audience of the connection that the film aims to establish with them. Bhushan is my friend, we will make many more films together. These are pointless debates that find their way on social media”. (IANS)

Popular Kannada actor and activist Chetan Ahimsa was arrested by Bengaluru police on Tuesday over his “anti-Hindutva” remarks.

According to police, Hindu activist Shivakumar and a Hindu organisation had lodged a complaint against Chetan in this regard with Sheshadripuram police station in Bengaluru.

The activist was picked him up from his residence.

In his social media post, Chetan had claimed that Hindutva is built on falsehood. He also termed “incorrect” the statement of BJP icon Veer Savarkar that Hindu nation took shape when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.

He stated that the claim of Ram Janma Bhoomi since 1992 in the place of Babri Masjid is also a lie. In 2023, their (BJP) statement of Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda killing erstwhile Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan is also a lie. (IANS)

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is rolling out a tweaked link preview interface on iOS beta.

For beta testers, a new row will now appear above the chat bar when a link is entered into the platform, and the application will animate the row while loading the link preview, reports WABetaInfo.

Earlier, users had no indication whether the platform was loading the preview or not, which undoubtedly caused confusion and wasted time while they waited for it to arrive.

The tweaked interface when loading a link preview is available for some beta testers that install the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and is expected to roll out to more people over the coming days, the report said. (IANS)

India begin SAFF U-17 Women’s C’ship with win over Nepal

DHAKA, MAR 21

(IANS): India’s U-17 team laid down the marker with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Nepal in the opening game of the 2023 SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship campaign at the BSSS Mostafa Kamal Stadium, here. The stadium had served up forgettable memories for the India U-20 team, against the same opposition earlier in the year as they suffered a defeat and if there were any fears that this would prove to be a tricky tie, they were banished almost immediately. Within forty seconds of the start India had already launched up an attempt on goal, and after 20 minutes had already put the ball in the net thrice - albeit twice they were ruled out for offside.

PV Priya’s wards were aware of the threat Nepal possessed, and never let their foot off the pedal, constantly pressing high and hassling the Nepal midfield off the ball. In the 10th minute, Shilji Shaji got

the breakthrough, running on to goalkeeper Khushi’s long cleared ball past a napping Nepal defence and slotting it into the far corner. It was the simplest of plays executed perfectly.

Pooja and Sibani play-

ing on either side of Shilji - and switching flanks periodically - were a constant thorn in the flesh for the Nepal full backs, and the former had two goals chalked off for offside in the opening half hour of the game. Her pace and ability to drop precise crosses never allowed the rivals to settle. Just when it seemed that Nepal would escape the half without conceding more, India hit them with a double blow. First Shilji scored in the 40th minute, her second goal a carbon copy of the first, the only change in the provider of the long ball - Khushi replaced by Thoibisana. And then, barely a minute later, Pooja had made it three, Shilji this time the provider for the winger to tap in. Nepal went into the

break not knowing what had hit them.

India’s ability to affect the important periods of the game and keep Nepal at an arm’s distance was essentially the difference between the two sides. Every time Nepal looked threatening, India would wrest back control. Barsha Oli scored off a well taken

volley in the 54th minute to reduce the deficit, but rarely did India look like losing the plot. Shilji rounded off a brilliant performance with a well taken third, robbing the Nepal midfield from a throw-in and then running through on her own to finish. WPL: MI take top spot with 4-wkt win over RCB

MUMBAI, MAR 21

(IANS): Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by four wickets in Match 19 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Tuesday at the D.Y Patil Stadium here to take the top spot.

With the win, Mumbai hold the provisional top spot and will have to wait for the result of the match between Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz to ensure their direct qualification to the final.

Amelia Kerr mixed guile, flight, and turn to pick up three wickets (3-22) as a disciplined bowling effort from the MI bowlers restricted RCB to 125/9 in 20 overs. Yastika Bhatia then provided a good platform with a 26-ball 30 before Kerr’s calculated knock of 31 not out off 27 balls helped MI seal the chase after a slight stutter in the middle.

Chasing 126, MI survived a scare first up as Hayley Matthews was ad-

judged LBW off the first ball of the innings but she reviewed and the replay showed it was missing leg.

Matthews then looked to take the aggressive route and rode her luck as she hit a six and four off Devine and was then caught behind but Devine had overstepped and it was called a no-ball.

Yastika then found her range as she went on

Nandal wins at 38th Premier Sarawak Cup Tennis tourney

MOHALI, MAR 21 (IANS): RoundGlass Tennis Academy (RGTA) athlete Yuvan Nandal has clinched the boys singles title at the 38th Premier Sarawak Cup (Grade I) in Malaysia. The tournament was held from March 13-19 and featured some of the best junior players from around the world.

Yuvan Nandal, a promising star of Indian tennis, defeated third seeded Aryan Shah 6-3,64 in straight sets in the final to lift the trophy. On

a four-hitting spree. She struck a couple of fours off Shreyanka Patil and then took the attack to Ellyse Perry, hitting her for three fours in an over.

Shreyanka bounced back to remove the dangerous Yastika in the next over as she had her caught at mid-on for 30 (26).

RCB then built a bit of pressure and scalped two quick wickets as Megan

his road to the final, he defeated Korean Donghyun Hwang, Japan’s Reiya Hattori, Australia’s Charlie Camus and Pavle Marinkov.

With this win, Yuvan has added another prestigious title to his growing list of accomplishments.

Renowned coach and Technical Director of RoundGlass Tennis Academy, Aditya Sachdeva and team have been training Yuvan at the Academy and have helped him hone his skills and improve his game.

Schutt dismissed Matthews while Sobhana Asha sent back Nat Sciver-Brunt.

Perry then got the big wicket as she had Harmanpreet Kaur drag one onto the stumps and MI were reduced to 73/4 in the 10th over.

Pooja Vastrakar then hit a couple of delightful cover drives off Shreyanka to release the pressure.

The run rate was never a concern, it’s just that MI needed to stem the wicket flow.

Vastrakar (19 off 18) and Amelia Kerr (31* off 27) got together, batted sensibly to mix caution with aggression and added 47 off 40 balls to take MI closer to a win.

Vastrakar and Issy Wong lost their wickets in quick succession but Kerr made sure she closed the match as MI won by four wickets.

Earlier, MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bowl. Both teams went

unchanged.

Mumbai got off to a good start as they claimed the big wicket of Sophie Devine in the first over. Devine, who had hit a whirlwind 36-ball 99 in the last match, was involved in a mix-up while going for a single with Smriti Mandhana and was run out for a duck off the third ball of the innings.

Mandhana got the first four of the innings in the third over as she cracked one through point off Wong. The RCB skipper then walked down the track to Sciver-Brunt in the fifth over and smashed it over deep mid-wicket for the first six of the innings.

Brief scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 125/9 in 20 overs (Ellyse Perry 29, Richa Ghosh 29; Amelia Kerr 3-22, Nat Sciver-Brunt 2-24, Issy Wong 2-26) lost to Mumbai Indians 129/6 in 16.3 overs (Amelia Kerr 31 not out, Yastika Bhatia 30; Kanika Ahuja 2-5) by four wickets.
