Deepa, daughter of Lakshman Mishra, who is a Math teacher in HCHSS and a resident of NST colony, topped the exam with 97.6 %. She attributed her success to God, her fam-
ily, friends and teachers. According to her, concentration in class was her success mantra. The self-confessed “late rise” said she studied for 3-4 hours daily throughout the year and had taken private English and Hindi tuitions only during the last three months before examination. She further aims to become a cardiologist if not a professor. HCHSS, vice principal Sister carol, was deemed with pride over Deepa’s success result and her decision to continue HSSLC in the same school.
PVHSS boys top HSSLC science and commerce exam: Piklu Paul, son of Protul Ranjan Paul, of Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School (PVHSS) Dimapur, secured top position in the HSSLC science exam(94.80%) securing highest marks in Physics, Chemistry and MIL by studying 14-15 hours daily three months before the examination. Paul, who wants to be a software engineer, said he started his year studying three subjects four to five hours daily and the hours
gradually increased. He credited his success to God, principal, subject teachers, family and friends. Piklu is yet to decide his next step for further studies. Rajdeep Nath, who wants to be a chartered accountant also from PVHSS, Dimapur topped HSSLC (Commerce) with 95%. He is opting to study B.Com with honours and MBA afterwards. NLC alleges rampant backdoor appointment in RD department D I M A P U R , M AY 8 (NPN): Nagaland Congress (NLC) has alleged rampant backdoor appointments in the Rural Development department saying 85% of total employees in the state were directly appointed while only 8.3% were appointed through interview, combined exam and NPSC and 7% appointed through deputation/absorption etc. Backing its claims with facts and figures furnished by the RD directorate through RTI, NLC said over the years up to November 17, 2016 the appointments were highly questionable and challengeable. Percentage of direct appointment: It said out of total 640 regularized employees, from the post of
SO-I down to Steno Gr-III, appointments were done in following manner: 12% through interview, 0.9% through combined exam, 0.4% through NPSC, 2% through other process (deputation/absorption) while 85% were direct appointments. NLC further alleged 100% direct appointment were made in the case of 316 contractual employees. It said 613 were appointed within 2010-2016 and only three prior to 2010. Giving out the district wise percentage, NLC said under Longleng districts it was 90%, 88% in Mon district, 87% (Mokokchung district), 87% (Dimapur district), 85% in the directorate, 84% (Tuensang district),
80% (Kiphire district), 79% (Phek district), 79% (Zunheboto district), 79% (Peren district), 76% (Wokha district) and 75% (Kohima district). It alleged that the 85% direct appointments and 7% under deputation were mainly minister’s and parliamentary secretary’s candidates, thereby leaving only 8% provision for few qualified and deserving candidates. NLC said it would continue to take on the government/department with similar issues and would continue to feed uninformed citizens with facts and figures on questionable and challengeable appointments in major departments in the state.

SC puts Lalu back on trial Copying an industry in UP: Javadekar in fodder scam case
New Delhi, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): In a blow to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad, the Supreme Court on Monday held that he and other accused persons, including former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra, will be tried separately for corruption in a criminal case involving the withdrawal of Rs. 84.53 lakh and falsification of records from the Deoghar Treasury in 1991-94 in connection with the Rs. 900 crore fodder scam. A Supreme Cour t
Bench led by Justice Arun Mishra set aside the High Court decision of November 2014 to stop criminal proceedings against Mr. Prasad on the ground that the veteran leader cannot be found guilty of the same offences twice under Section 300 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The apex court ordered the CBI to conclude the trial in nine months. Prasad was, at the time of the High Court decision, already sentenced to a five-year rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case connected to the fodder scam involving the withdrawal of over Rs. 37.7 crore from the Chaibasa Treasury during 1994-95 on the basis of 78 fake allotment letters. The sentence immediately led to his disqualification from Parliament and barred him from elections for 11 years.
L u c k n ow, M ay 8 (IANS): Observing that cheating in examinations has become an industry in Uttar Pradesh, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday sought cooperation from all stakeholders
to improve the quality of education. Speaking at an event here, Javadekar said it was a myth that government schools offered substandard education. “There are many challenges (in education) in
UP. Copying in exams here has become an industry. People even climb up multistoreyed buildings to hand over chits to candidates,” Javadekar said while referring to mass cheating during Uttar Pradesh board exams.

2,000 commandos to enter Sukma soon
New Delhi, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): The CRPF will soon deploy a fresh squad of about 2,000 commandos from its special guerrilla warfare CoBRA battalions in and around the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh to defang the Maoists and their arsenal. Sukma and its adjoining areas have witnessed some of the deadliest ambushes on security forces recently like the one where 25 CRPF men were killed in the Burkapal area of the district on April 24. 12 CRPF men were similarly killed by Naxals on March 11 in Sukma. A top official privy to the development said the paramilitary has prepared a blueprint to mobilise at least 20 to 25 companies of the CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) from their present locations in West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh to the Bastar region that has some of the worst Maoist violence-hit districts of the central state.

AAP exposed
party that had come to power crusading against corruption and daring to call everybody corrupt and promising a new era of clean politics, today is imploding and getting back what it gave to others. The Aam Admi Party (AAP) is feeling the shame and embarrassment when its very own self-acclaimed anti-corruption crusader and chief minister Arvind Kejriwal today stands accused of receiving Rs.2 crore in cash from AAP health minister Satyendra Jain. The accusation was made by none other than Kapil Mishra (minister of water) who was described as ‘Mr. Clean’ by Arvind and his ministers not too long ago. The AAP has been busy targeting everybody for alleged corruption and also naming and shaming them by calling them corrupt. It had demolished the Shiela Dikshit Congress government by calling them all sorts of names and vowing to send Dikshit to jail on crime of corruption.AAP came to power at the cost of the Congress and forgot that the same fate would befall it if it fails the test. The Congress has been the soft target of the AAP and it got away with everything. However, when AAP chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tried the same with the BJP by accusing union finance minister Arun Jaitley of financial mismanagement in Delhi cricket body (DDCA) which the latter headed for 13 years till 2013; he bit off more than he could chew. Jaitely hauled Arvind Kejriwal to court with a Rs.10 crore defamation. The court rejected Kejriwal’s plea to be exempted from personal appearance and thus rubbing salt to injury. Had Kapil Mishra made the charge against any other AAP member, then that member would have been dismissed. However, since the accused is Arvind Kejriwal, the action was taken against Kapil Mishra when he was dismissed from the party (without the courtesy of instituting a high level party probe, even if it was a sham). This is the first time that a corruption allegation of accepting illegal money has been made directly against Kejriwal. Making another potentially damaging accusation, Mishra claimed that Jain had told him that he had settled land deals worth Rs50 crore for Kejriwal’s relatives .The allegations gain significance given that Delhi’s incumbent party was born out of an anti-corruption agitation and won a historic mandate in 2015 by promising a clean and transparent government. Instead of providing a clean and transparent government, the AAP has been busy raking up serious allegations in order to divert attention from its woeful record of insignificant achievement. Now that chief minister Arvind Kejriwal himself is under scanner; the cash scam will be the achievement of the self-proclaimed ‘clean’ AAP. Kapil Mishra submitted documents to the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) to back his allegations that Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had delayed the probe into a Rs 400 crore tanker scam, that was supposed to ‘nail’ Shiela Dikshit. However, what is worse with the AAP is its utter hypocrisy which stood exposed when many prominent members left the party because of lack of transparency and democracy in its functioning. There have been speculations that several AAP legislators are planning to switch sides because of dissatisfaction with the party. The internal rumblings within the party have also led to voices of dissent. All these are not the change that people of Delhi voted for.
DailyDevotion The Faith to Persevere Because you have kept My command to persevere… —Revelation 3:10 Perseverance means more than endurance— more than simply holding on until the end. A saint’s life is in the hands of God like a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see, but our Lord continues to stretch and strain, and every once in a while the saint says, “I can’t take any more.” Yet God pays no attention; He goes on stretching until His purpose is in sight, and then He lets the arrow fly. Entrust yourself to God’s hands. Is there something in your life for which you need perseverance right now? Maintain your intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through the perseverance of faith. Proclaim as Job did, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15). Faith is not some weak and pitiful emotion, but is strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. And even though you cannot see Him right now and cannot understand what He is doing, you know Him. Disaster occurs in your life when you lack the mental composure that comes from establishing yourself on the eternal truth that God is holy love. Faith is the supreme effort of your life— throwing yourself with abandon and total confidence upon God. God ventured His all in Jesus Christ to save us, and now He wants us to venture our all with total abandoned confidence in Him. There are areas in our lives where that faith has not worked in us as yet— places still untouched by the life of God. There were none of those places in Jesus Christ’s life, and there are to be none in ours. Jesus prayed, “This is eternal life, that they may know You…” (John 17:3). The real meaning of eternal life is a life that can face anything it has to face without wavering. If we will take this view, life will become one great romance— a glorious opportunity of seeing wonderful things all the time. God is disciplining us to get us into this central place of power.

ne of the reasons I don’t eat sweets is because, over the years, I have discovered that most of them have gelatine in them. A friend of mine owned a chain of small shops in which you could go, as in the Western sweet shops, and scoop out various candies you wanted from open, shelflike drawers, have them weighed and pay for them. I liked them very much. When the red and green dot was introduced, she put the red dot on all of them, including my favourite, the black liquorice sweets. She then told me that she – and the rest of the world – bought them from China and simply repackaged them. That was when I realized that I could not eat sweets any more. I also gave up eating anything in a capsule.Gelatine is a flavourless, colourless, gelling and thickening agent with unique properties: it dissolves in hot water and gels when it cools (a process which is reversible), and creates a texture and bite in various foods. The gelatine market is worth over 3 billion dollars. It is used in gummy chewy candies, gummy bears, jelly babies, jelly, mints, some chewing gums, marshmallows, ice creams, commercial cakes, icing, frosting,

cream cheese, margarine, commercial yoghurt and sour cream, frosted cereals, frosted poptarts, salted nuts (gelatine helps hold the salt onto the nut, like in Planters dry roasted peanuts), coffee and milk substitutes, lozenges, Chinese dumplings, cosmetics (under the name hydrolysed collagen), shampoos, facemasks. Gelatine is also used in fat reduced foods to simulate the feel of fat and to create volume without adding calories. It is used to strain commercial juices like apple juice and vinegar. It is the yellow colour in all soft drinks. Certain professional and theatrical lighting equipment use colour gels to change the beam colour. All photographic films and paper use it. It is the glue used on match heads, sandpaper and agarbattis. It is found in watercolour paper, glossy printing papers and playing cards, and it maintains the wrinkles in crêpe paper. Gelatine is made by boiling animal bones, ligaments, skin or tendons, with water. 44% of the world’s supply comes from pigskin, 28% from cowskin, 27% from bones and 1% is anything else. In essence, it’s made primarily from the stuff meat industries have left over, feet, skins, horns, bones It has

No one doing any original research no nutritive value and is simply a thickening agent to give food a soft, squishy consistency. I don’t even know why it’s legally permissible to be considered a “food” product. You’re basically dropping shards of animal waste into an acid, or alkaline, bath and selling it for 545 rupees a kg. The market is growing, as India plunges deeper into processed foods. Its growth is projected at 6-7% between 2016 and 2024, with most of it in the AsiaPacific region. So far vegetarians have had to restrict themselves to using alternatives made from agar agar, a seaweed algae. Other alternatives are carrageenan, pectin, konjak, and guar gum. Hypromellose is a vegetarian-acceptable alternative to gelatine capsules, but is more expensive to produce. But now the future is upon us. The inventors of food are no less than the geniuses in the I.T. field - and perhaps far more
relevant. I have just read about Gelzen, a company that produces gelatine from a genetically engineered micro-organism in fermentation tanks. If we can take this up it will disrupt the gelatine market with a game changing, animal free, alternative. Just as two Indian boys are in Silicon Valley making real milk from multiplying milk cells (it was called Muufrii, but I think they’ve changed the name), Alexander Lorestani who studied medicine at Rutgers and bacterial pathogenesis at Princeton, and molecular biologist Nikolay Ouzounov, founded Gelzen in San Francisco in 2015 to do the same with gelatine. “There is significant demand for an alternative that can precisely replicate the unique qualities of gelatine. While the alternatives are good, agar agar, pectin, starches, gums, they don’t have the same chemical or mechanical proper-
ties,” said Lorestani, who is effectively programing microbes to produce collagen via a fermentation process without using or harming animals. Gelatine replacement has been a major issue in recent years, due to the emerging and lucrative vegetarian, halal and kosher markets. Even meat eaters have problems with gelatine: pork is not halaal or kosher, cows are not permitted for Hindus. There are also concerns about mad cow disease being transmitted. Everyone should have an issue with eating boiled animal tails and feet, teats and unmentionable parts. In India there is a great demand to switch to plant based alternatives, especially in pharmaceuticals. Some international companies have started looking at bio engineering plants. For instance, the Israeli firm Collplant has genetically manipulated tobacco plants to produce collagen that can be used for wound care (this frightens me). But Gelzen seems to be the first in trying to produce gelatine, on an industrial scale for food and other commercialscale applications, from recombined proteins. Gelzen takes mi crobes, approved for the production of food that naturally produce proteins,

The big traffic
don’t know where to start because I feel am always stuck in the middle of Dimapur Traffic. A huge number of vehicles are added on the road day by day. However the amount of Traffic congestion can be considerably minimized if we take care of the following. 1. Overtaking - The roads in Nagaland are narrow which more often than not prolongs the smooth flow of traffic. In spite of that, 90% of the drivers overtake from the left side of the road during heavy traffic. This imprudence only proves our lack of qualities like civic sense, patience, and intelligence. 2. Taking risk - The Driver should take care of the safety of the passengers as well as himself. Everyone is in a hurry but one misfortune is sufficient enough for us to miss the curry and make our dear ones worry. 3. The role of the traffic personnel is very important and should not be limited to blowing the whistle alone. The prestigious personnel have accomplished the rule of use of helmets for two wheelers and identifying parking & no parking areas. Sadly, a lot of issues like overtaking & over speeding, use of seat belts, driving under the influence of alcohol, under age driving, use of mobile phones while driving, etc remains unattended. Those breaking the law should be penalized by imposing fines and on the spot license suspensions should be implemented. Therefore, let us not learn the traffic rules by accident. Stay in one lane, avoid the pain and we shall all gain. Imti Imsong, Landmark Colony, Dimapur

Nagaland is not ownerless
f late, Mr. Zeneituo A n g a m i , K i l o n s e r, NSCN(IM) has made unbridled attacks on the personality of Mr. Thepfulhouvi Solo, a senior and respected citizen of Nagaland, on the issue of whether NSCN(IM), under the Framework of 2015, can decide the fate of Nagaland without further consultations with the Nagas of Nagaland. The Kilonser has unsparingly used his best arsenals (which were fired earlier but intercepted by THAAD) and intended to pin down the senior citizen. As I continued to read between the lines, the kilonser, in the name of debating with the senior citizen, has been conveying adequate messages to the Nagas of Nagaland relating to assertions for our birth rights which attracted this intervention of mine. Besides abusively insinuating the senior citizen, the kilonser has bullied the Nagas of Nagaland that his govt. is mandated to take exclusive decision for Nagaland. The kilonser asserted that a ‘Naga from another planet’ has right to take any decision which he feels is best for Nagaland. What the kilonser claimed that ‘any Naga by blood has right to speak and act/decide what is best for the Nagas’ as published on 20.4.2017. Such claims are nothing but the dastardly distortions of Naga way of life. Such assertions are antithesis to Naga tradition and customs
of the autonomy of every Naga village and tribe whether it is for land or for social and judicial practices. Such assertion implies that the Nagas of Nagaland are not the sole owners of the State of Nagaland and therefore we, the Nagas of Nagaland, should remain mute and accept whatever is the outcome under the ‘framework’. On the contrary, my assertions are these: The 14 Indigenous Naga tribes along with few indigenous inhabitants are the owners of the State of Nagaland. And Nagaland has been the centre of all Naga political activities since its Independent movement started. Many unscrupulous Nagas had exploited Nagaland and tend to continue the exploitation taking the advantage as the Nagas of Nagaland have to play the good host without grudge all through these years. Thus, Nagaland has been used to the extent as the hunting ground for private wealth and exhibition hall for prowess. Nagaland is overmilked, and it is on the verge of collapse. At any cost, we have to protect it for its survival and therefore we have to speak the truth and allow the truth to prevail. Exactly, for the sake of protecting the truth, Mr. Thepfulhouvi has to bear the brunt of intolerance. Whereas, in countless cases, the magnanimity of the host, the Nagas of Nagaland, is taken
as ignorant, timid, gullible and useable. When the host rises to defend its birth rights, it is considered a hostile, unpatriotic, discourteous, untrustworthy and mean. Nevertheless, the fact remains that neither can there be Naga political history nor future without the people of Nagaland. For the sake of Naga posterity, some of the Nagas of Nagaland will remain undeterred and relentless in calling a spade -spade. The second contentious issue is the claim of the kilonser that the requisite consultations with cross sections of the Nagas so far made should be adequate for NSCN(IM) to take decision under the ‘framework’ for Nagaland. Those consultations and so called approvals obtained were considered subjective manipulations bereft of open heartedness. When we talk about the mandate of the Nagas, 1951 Plebiscite is the only valid mandate. Secondly, the setback is the rest of the Naga National Political groups did not participate in the signing of the ‘framework’ of 2015. At this rate, I apprehend that a solution out of the ‘framework’ may fall in the category of 1975 Shillong Accord or even worse. In such given situation, I am sceptical that once again the Nagas will have peace with GOI and war amongst the Nagas. Such has to be avoided. Z. Lohe
The two governments of Nagaland
am much saddened when innocent people are unjustly treated for no reason. My conscience would not remain silent watching the agonies of the Nagas. The rich and the powerful get the good side of law and make the poor people unlawful in their sight. Although we cannot fully do away with evil, yet we should not contribute towards its growth in our society. Both good and evil have their proper place in everyone’s life. But to choose the better side lies solely on the individual’s beliefandpower. One such evil which Nagas are finding difficult to do away with is illegal taxation. It ranges from Khuzama check post to Nagaland gate. Adding fuels to it are the taxation deducted from the Government servants for the welfare of the Naga political groups. The Government is so kind to these groups not knowing that they are digging the graves of Na-
gas instead of working for peace and harmony among brethrens.Working for one’s selfish gain is equalized to working for Nagas peace and agreement. The tall and well-furnished buildings in and around Dimapur will speak the fact of working for Nagas. Effects speak louder than the cause. The work of National Investigation Agency (NIA) is a good start to clean some muddle of Nagaland. It may not be the fault of the Government Officers to pay illegal taxes to the Naga political groups. The real culprit is the Government of Nagaland who failed to control the growth of political outfits. The good works of the political groups/undergrounds are highly appreciated by all. Their contributions to the socio-political life of the Nagas are to be remembered with gratitude. The best effort they give for the cause of Nagas must receive greater
appreciation. But there are some souls within the group who knows evil more than goodness. They hamper the growth of Nagaland. Every individual Naga is ready to help the underground groups legally from their own resources, but not illegally. Most political leaders make use of the undergrounds for their own security and purposes. Government officers become the victims ofsuch dramas. Nagaland may not progress much under this circumstances. All Naga political groups must stand for what is right and true. They should not be at the beck and call of the ministers and MLAs. In other words, they should not be slaves to each other. This takes us to the existing fact of two Governments in Nagaland. The poor citizens are made to obey both. Obedience is them is a necessary evil because of threats and dire consequences. No
Government Officers want to be kidnapped for ransom neither do they want instant death because they have families to feed. I hope all ministers, MLAs and undergrounds have their families. Why do we threaten our own fellow beings with letters, bullets and guns?People who are used to giving out such threats are no less than terrorists. We terrorize the good life of other people for our own advantages. I am sure you do not want the same to be done to you and your families. Let us be better Nagas to each other and seek the way of proper dialogues, peace and harmony. Differences of life, status and opinions should not deter us from coming together. Let us learn to live in freedom before we get political freedom. Live in hope rather than living a hopeless life inside Nagaland. G. L. Khing, Kohima, (tisislawkhing@gmail.com)
and gives them a set of instructions, in the form of genes, to make collagen. Basically they programme bacteria with the DNA of collagen. There are companies in the world that sell the DNA of any being. So, Gelzen started off by ordering mastodon DNA to make mastodon collagen. (The mastodon is the prehistoric, extinct, ancestor of the elephant.) The microbes are put into large fermenters with their food: sugar, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon. After a batch has been produced, it is purified. Each batch can be modified according to what it is being used for – whether hard sweets or soft jellies. Every time a company comes up with humane alternatives to meat, milk and animal parts, I am so hopeful. If I had the money, I would be the angel investor in all of them. Gelzen plans to supply the product by summer 2017 and be in the big league in four years. They have already got 2.5 million dollars in investment. How come no one in India is doing any original research in food or I.T.? Or anything? To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in,www. peopleforanimalsindia. org

O
ur CM Dr. Shurhozelie in his 80s, when he was chosen as the chief minister, our Naga people were delighted and very happy, why because he is God fearing man. Not only that, at this age most people are either dead or retired, but with all his healthy life style and good health, successful political career as examples, he was appointed as the CM, so we Nagas are very proud of him as he has set a very wonderful example to the world as a Naga. Now again, we are hearing that S.C Jamir governor of Odisha who is also in his 80s is going to be nominated as vice president of India, this is indeed very good news for the Nagas and the country as whole, why because, India as the world’s most democratic country, in this era and situation in India we can proudly say that he is one of the most eligible candidate for this post. And we are sure the right thinking citizens of India will say the same with all his successful political career, experiences and contributions to India. Appeal to AGM SBI regional office Dimapur Sir,
It is to be noted and known that, State Bank of India (SBI) is one of the largest Banking sector throughout the Country and the World. The SBI throughout the State in all as well as sub-divisions are facing financial crisis for the past three months i,e those who have cash deposit, government employees, pensioners as well as business and contractors due to non payment of cash as all deposits are in the SBI. How can the largest Banking sector in the Country and World deny payments od cash due to customers for the past three months. It is my humble appeal to the assistant general manager (AGM) SBI, regional office, Dimapur that payment of cash due to customers should be taken care at the earliest, as all nationalised Banks and State Co-operative Banks are dependent upon SBI. (From p-1) Recalling the shooting down of Indian Air Force Dakota plane and the great battle of Thuda post and the subsequent savagery at Matikhrü village perpetrated upon innocent Pochury people, NNPGs said “it all points to the fact that Pochury people remain an inspirational tribe and an inseparable component in our desire to find an honourable and acceptable political settlement for the people of Nagaland, considering that the Government of India had firmly ruled out integration of Naga inhabited areas. During the meeting, NNPGs and PH agreed that “at this juncture of Naga history, reality, must precede idealism and illusion.” NNPGs and PH also reiterated the historical fact that “Nagas are separated by artificial boundaries without their approval and consent which is why social, cultural and emotional integration among Nagas living in different administrative areas should be maintained till such time future of Naga generation decide to chart a nobler, higher political course.”

attract the fence-sitting borrowers to go in for a loan now. “This is a giant leap to give a fillip to the affordable housing segment keeping the government vision of providing housing for all by 2022,” Kumar said. “A lot of customers are undecided on a new home as rates of the market as well as finance have been high for too long. That should hopefully change now,” Kumar added. With a home loan book of Rs 2.23 trillion, SBI leads the home mortgage segment with 25-26 per cent market share. He, however, said the new offer may not push up its market share significantly as 45 per cent of its Rs 2.23 trillion home loan book is already under the Rs 30 lakh bracket and the rest of the credit industry is also very aggressive. SBI is also giving a special offer for construction finance to builders for affordable housing projects. “This will give a dual push both for construction finance and also for home finance for affordable homes, but the bank did not quantify the reduction,” he said.

SBI Managing Director for national banking, Rajnish Kumar said the 25 bps reduction is applicable to new women borrowers who are salaried, while for the non-salaried women borrowers, the reduction is 20 bps. Similarly, a male salaried borrower can get a new loan at 8.40 per cent, 20 bps lower than the prevailing rate, and a non-salaried male borrower can avail of a loan at 15 bps lower than the current rate, Kumar said. “This is a huge saving for the borrower as the 25 bps reduction translates into a saving of Rs 530 per month on EMI,” Kumar told PTI, adding that the new rates will be effective tomorrow. Explaining the reason behind the move, which makes its offering the lowest in the industry, Kumar said the bank has seen a hike in home loan enquiries of late and reduction in rates will further help millions of buyers fulfil their dream of owning a home. Also, the bank expects that the new rates will

Mumbai, May 8 (PTI): Upping the ante in the housing loan segment, State Bank of India today steeply reduced its affordable home loan rates by up to 25 basis points, offering a lower rate of 8.35 per cent to new women borrowers. With around 26 per cent market share, the nation’s largest lender is also the biggest player in the home loan segment. Even at the existing 8.60 per cent, SBI offers the lowest rate. HDFC, the secondlargest player in the space, offers loans at 8.65 per cent to women for loans up to Rs 75 lakh and 8.7 per cent for others. Similar is the minimum rate being offered by the largest private lender, ICICI Bank. As for male borrowers, the state-owned bank said the limited period offer is valid till July 31 and the new rate for the salaried will be lower by 20 bps at 8.40 per cent. One percentage point is 100 basis points (bps). Under the new government scheme, loans under Rs 30 lakh qualify for affordable housing in which the borrower gets an

Macron wins French presidency; EU elated
French President-elect Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte during a victory celebration outside the Louvre museum in Paris Sunday. (AP/PTI) PARIS, MAY 8 (IANS): Centrist Emmanuel Macron on Sunday became France’s youngest President with a stunning win over far-right rival Marine Le Pen, a verdict loudly cheered by the European Union. Wild celebrations broke out in many parts of Paris and across France as Macron, 39, wrapped up an overwhelming 66.06 per cent of all votes in a closely and bitterly fought battle. This amounted to 20.7 million votes. A civil servant who became a millionaire investment banker and then a government minister, Macron founded the ‘En Marche!’ movement and went on to become the President despite not having a constituency of his own and
without the backing of any major party. But Le Pen, 48, took about 10.6 million votes in the Presidential election’s crucial runoff or 33.94 per cent of the votes. This was almost double the tally her more rabid father Jean-Marie won in 2002, the last time a far-right candidate made it to the runoff. She told her National Front supporters that the new divide in France was between “globalists and patriots”. As Le Pen called up Macron to congratulate him, the new President vowed to fight “the forces of division that undermine France”, media reports said. In a speech to jubilant supporters, Macron said: “Tonight you won, France
won. Everyone told us it was impossible. But they don’t know France.” He tweeted earlier: “As of this evening and for the coming five years, I am going to serve with humility, with dedication, with determination, in your name.” Macron acknowledged the anger of many voters and pledged to protect the weakest members of the society. “I will work to renew the links between Europe and its citizens. My duty is to alleviate fears and rekindle optimism,” he added. “I will fight with all my strength against the divisions that separate us.” European Union leaders heaved a sigh of relief over the defeat of Le Pen, who had threatened a “Brexit” if she came to power.

international Syria to abide by ‘de-escalation’ plan BEIRUT, MAY 8 (AGENCIES): Syria’s foreign minister said on Monday that his government would abide by the terms of a Russian plan for “de-escalation” zones so long as rebels also obser ved it. Walid alMoualem told a televised news conference that rebels involved in the process must help clear areas they control of jihadist factions, including the former Nusra Front, and that the deal’s guarantors must help them do this. The deal for de-escalation zones was brokered by Russia, with backing from Turkey and Iran, during ceasefire talks in the Kazakh capital Astana last week and came into effect at midnight on Friday, but some fighting has continued in those areas. “It is the duty of the groups which signed the ceasefire agreement to expel Nusra from these zones until the areas really become de-escalated.
Final push ahead of S.Korean Presidential polls
SEOUL, MAY 8 (IANS): South Korean Presidential candidates made last minute appeals to rally support on Monday as the nation of 51 million elects a new President on Tuesday after a year of political upheaval. Latest polls have put Democratic Party’s Moon Jae-in in the lead, the media reported. The early election was triggered after President Park Geun-hye was ousted from office in March following her involvement in a massive corruption scandal. Moon’s closest rivals are conservative Liberty Korea Party candidate Hong Joon-pyo and the People’s Party candidate Ahn Cheolsoo, who is also a liberal. Both are close to 20 per cent in the polls. Moon made a final pitch to voters Monday. “Without the united power of our people, (the new administration) will struggle from its first step. We must overcome this crisis with

united power,” he said. Hong also made a final plea to voters Monday to unite around him to protect conservative free market and strong on defence policies that have been in place for the last eight years, VOA reported.. “I stood up to prevent the left-wing from seizing power, and acted to protect a free Republic of Korea.
We will win. Truth will beat lies. Our people will win. Justice will beat hypocrisy. The Republic of Korea will win,” said the Liberty Korea Party candidate. As part of the campaigning, Moon is to make a trip to the country’s secondlargest city, Busan, and return to Seoul to finish his campaigning, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Busan, a port city located 450 km southeast of Seoul, apparently holds the most swing votes for the liberal candidate as it is considered the traditional home of conservatives. The 64-year-old former lawyer and chief of staff to late President Roh Moohyun, is also scheduled to make stops in Daegu, another stronghold of conservative parties, and Cheongju, a city located in the North Chungcheong province, according to party officials. Hong Joon-pyo, 62, from the Liberty Korea Party is to campaign in Busan and Daegu before making a brief stop in Cheonan in South Chungcheong province. The third leading contender, Ahn Cheol-soo, 55, of the centre-left People’s Party is focusing last minute efforts on Daejeon and the Chungcheong provinces.

KXIP’s Sandeep fined for showing dissent Mohali, May 8 (IANS): Kings XI Punjab fast-bowler Sandeep Sharma was on Monday fined 50 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent at an umpires decision during his teams Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Gujarat Lions at I.S. Bindra Stadium here. In the fifth over of the Gujarat Lions innings on Sunday, Sandeep decided to switch to round-the-wicket but umpire Nand Kishore called a no-ball as he believed that the bowler did not inform him about the change. Sharma admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.1.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials and accepted the sanction, as such there was no need for a formal hearing. For Level 1 breaches of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding. Bairstow stars as Eng clinch series
England players celebrate taking the wicket of Ireland’s Paul Stirling.
L on d on , M a y 8 (Agencies): Jonny Bairstow’s quickfire 72 not out set up England’s 85-run win over Ireland in the second one-day international at Lord’s on Sunday. Victory saw England take the two-match series 2-0 after they had launched their build-up to next month’s Champions Trophy tournament on home soil with a comfortable seven-wicket win at Bristol on Friday. Ireland, in their first ODI at ‘the Home of Cricket’, fought hard with the ball
in front of a 22,000-strong crowd. But, as was the case Friday, they suffered a batting collapse after a promising start and were dismissed for 243 chasing 329 to win. Ireland captain William Porterfield did, however, make 82, the top score of the match, as his side, who could be granted Test status next month, restored some pride after being bowled out for just 126 in 33 overs at Bristol. England risked squandering a strong position
when their Dublin-born captain Eoin Morgan (76) and Joe Root (73) fell in quick succession following a thirdwicket stand of 140 to leave the hosts 213 for four. But Bairstow and fellow Yorkshireman Adil Rashid shared a sixth-wicket stand of 88 in just 46 balls that helped take England to 328 for six. Their county colleague Root was named man-ofthe-match after also taking ODI-best figures of three for 52 with his occasional off-spin.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev wins Munich title BERLIN, May 8 (Agencies): Germany’s rising star Alexander Zverev earned his third ATP title, but his first on home soil, with a straight sets win in the final of the Munich tournament on Sunday. The 20-year-old third seed needed just 72 minutes to seal a 6-4, 6-3 win over Argentinian qualifier Guido Pella, ranked 158th in the world. Hamburg-born Zverev converted his first match point to take the title after also winning in St Petersburg last September and Montpellier in February. Rain in Munich delayed the start by nearly three hours and Zverev made a slow start, being broken in the first game, but rallied by taking the last three games of the first set. He walks away with a brand-news sports car and winners cheque of 85,945 euros ($94,518) -plus a luxury pair of Bavarian lederhosen.

India’s 15 member squad for Champions Trophy. (PTI) New Delhi, May 8 (PTI): Defending champions India today opted for the tried and tested in their Champions Trophy cricket squad with a fit-again Rohit Sharma returning to the side while Manish Pandey beat young chinaman Kuldeep Yadav as the 15th member. Rohit, who has recovered from a thigh injury, made a comeback as selectors gave due weightage to his round the year performance. Overall, the selection panel, headed by MSK Prasad, kept faith in the squad which defeated England in a home series earlier this year. India will play their opening match of the Champions Trophy, to be held in England, against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 4. The event itself will get underway on June 1.
Pandey has made it as an extra batsman in the squad to be led by Virat Kohli. Prasad said the selectors seriously considered Kuldeep Yadav too before he was put on the standby list. “We definitely considered the name of Kuldeep. He would have been a surprise package but whether we would have played with two spinners is a question. Since Yuvraj (Singh) and Kedar (Jadhav) can bowl spin, he narrowly missed out,” Prasad explained after the selection committee meeting here. Some of the other names that were discussed seriously were keeper-batsmen Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Shardul Thakur and Suresh Raina. Along with Kuldeep, these four are also on the standby list. Prasad made it clear
that even though IPL is a premier domestic tournament, the performance of players in the event can’t be the sole criteria for selecting a squad for a 50-over tournament. With no surprises in the team, Prasad said it was an easy team to pick as it has shaped up well in the last four months. Veteran opener Gautam Gambhir, who has been performing well in the IPL, was not even discussed. Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has skipped the IPL owing to a sports hernia injury, has been included in the squad. Explaining the decision, Prasad said Ashwin’s injury was not that serious and he merely required some rest. Mahendra Singh Dhoni remained India’s first choice wicketkeeper.
Kante named Football Writers’ Bengaluru FC beat Lajong 3-2 in Federation Cup
Footballer of the Year
London, May 8 (Agencies): N’Golo Kante has been voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association. The Chelsea midfielder polled most votes among the 340-strong membership, beating team-mate Eden Hazard and third-placed Dele Alli to the award. Kante is the fifth player in six seasons to complete the awards double having last month been named Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers’ Association. More than 65 per cent of the votes went to either Kante or Hazard, while a record number of players polled at least one vote - among them West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster and Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert. Kante, a summer signing from champions Leicester, will become the first N’Golo Kante outfield player to win back-to-back Premier League titles with different clubs if Chelsea win two of their remaining four games. He said: “It is a fantastic honour to win this award. With so many great players in this Chelsea squad and in the Premier League, for the Football Writers’ Association of this country to name me as their Footballer of the Year is a very proud moment in my career.” FWA chairman Paddy Barclay said, “N’Golo Kante could not be a more deserving winner of English football’s most prestigious individual award.” “In the view of some FWA members, he would have been a worthy recipient last season for his contribution to Leicester’s title success, but the almost unbroken excellent form of Chelsea since he changed clubs has left little room for further debate. Considering the competition of Eden Hazard and others from Chelsea in particular, this is a great achievement.”
C u tta c k , M ay 8 (PTI): Bengaluru FC defeated Shillong Lajong 3-2 in a tight encounter to make a flying start to their campaign at the 38th edition of the ongoing Hero Federation Cup here today. Strikes by Udanta Singh (35th minute), Eugeneson Lyngdoh (46th) and an own goal by skipper Aibrolang Khongjee proved enough for the Blues to register their first win. Dipanda Dicka had missed a penalty for Lajong in the 71st minute. The Blues, however, recouped from the nervous opening and Sandesh Jhingan’s 2nd-minute header which rattled the bar gave a testament of Bengaluru FC’s attacking intent. In the 33rd minute, BFC fostered perhaps the best scoring chance of the match as Udanta was released onto goal by skipper Sunil Chhetri. Udanta’s shot, however, went wide of the goal. Two minutes later, Udanta exorcised his demons as his shot from distance took a wicked deflection and looped in the Lajong net to hand BFC the lead. Eugeneson Lyngdoh doubled Bengaluru FC’s lead in the 46th minute. The Blues piled pressure on Thangboi Singto’s men and in the 60th minute, Sandesh Jhingan’s header from a corner kick
