SC rejects VVPAT review plea NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (PTI): Supreme Court Tuesday refused to modify its April 8 order which directed the Election Commission to increase random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to five polling booths per assembly segment in the Lok Sabha elections, and dismissed the review plea of 21 opposition leaders seeking that it be raised to 50 per cent. “We are not inclined to modify our order,” a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi told senior advocates A M Singhvi and Kapil Sibal, who were appearing for the petitioners led by Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The apex court on April 8 had directed poll panel to increase random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs from one to five polling booths per assembly segment in Lok Sabha polls, saying it would provide greater satisfaction not just to political parties but the entire electorate. On Tuesday, Singhvi told the bench that random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs should be in-

NPCC chief flays Modi’s jibe at Rajiv Gandhi

DIMAPUR, MAY 7 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie has condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment on late Rajiv Gandhi and termed it as “utter madness”. Therie claimed in a statement that there was no record of the former Prime Minister being convicted by any court for corruption. He said just because Modi is the Prime Minister, he cannot charge anyone. Therie said dragging Rajiv Gandhi’s name, whose life was shortened abruptly at his prime age, is most painful, adding history will not forgive Modi for his lies. “For us, Rajiv Gandhi is a national martyr and we respect his sacrifice. He was a great, brave and solid rock son of the soil.

creased to at least 25 per cent as against the present 2 per cent. “The Supreme Court had increased it from one to five (polling booths per assembly segment). We have asked for 50 per cent but we will be happy with 33 or even 25 per cent. We want at least 25 per cent. It is for increasing satisfaction and confidence building measure,” he told the bench. He said the number of random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs should be “viable” and the order for increasing it to five polling booths per assembly segment would amount to only 2 per cent. When the apex court said it would not modify the April 8 order, Singhvi said, “Suppose they (EC) find any fault in five, then? There is

NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): Election Commission Tuesday disposed of a complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his “bhrashtachari no. 1” taunt at Rajiv Gandhi. With this decision, Modi has been given a clean chit in nine cases. “Prima facie, we did not figure out any literal violation of MCC as given in Election Commission of India instructions. The case is therefore disposed of,” ANI quoted EC as saying. Speaking at a rally in Pratapgarh (UP) Saturday, Modi had taken a swipe at Rahul, saying, “Your father was termed ‘Mr Clean’ by his courtiers, but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari No. 1 (corrupt number 1)’.” Modi’s comment has drawn widespread criticism from various opposition parties and has led to a war of words between BJP and Congress. On Monday, a Congress delegation told EC that “usage of such obscene and derogatory language” was not only defamatory but also violates MCC that must be strictly observed and followed”.

Villages not to allow 7 more NPF leaders quit party obstruction to 4-lane work DIMAPUR, MAY 7 (NPN): A consultative meeting of village council chairman and head GBs of all villages along NH-29 (Purana Bazaar-Chumukedima stretch) was held along with district administration on May 7, 2019 at Chumukedima Town Council Hall, has resolved not to allow any obstruction of four-lane construction work by any individual or group for the reason of claiming land compensation or any other related issues. In a press release, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Chumukedima Thejavizo Nakhro stated that the consultative meeting was held to deliberate over the issues related to four-lane construction project and claims of land compensation “by the so called ‘NH-29 Land Owner Union (Purana Bazaar to Chumukedima)’.” The house while referring to the Government Orders dated August 3, 1992,

July 1993 and February 9, 2000, noted that the present four lane road construction was within the purview of the road reservation (ROW). Hence, the meeting affirmed that the question of land compensation did not arise. Further, the house has appealed to the contractor of four-lane project (Purana Bazaar to Chumukedima) to strictly adhere to the specifications of the DPR and ensure quality works. It also appealed to the responsible contractor to address the issue of safety in construction of roads/drainages, dust pollution and to speed up construction works for timely completion of the project. Meanwhile, the house resolved to strongly reaffirm the resolution adopted on July 20, 2018 at DC’s conference hall where the village authorities along NH-29 assured full cooperation to Government for timely completion of the four lane project.

DIMAPUR, MAY 7 (NPN): In a further setback to the opposition party, seven more central office bearers of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) announced their resignation from the party on Tuesday. The members sent their resignations to party president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu through two separate letters. In their letter to Liezietsu, NPF central office bearer (COB) general secretary B Bangtick Phom, NPF (COB) secretary Bongshin Yanlem and CEC member from 49 Tamlu Assembly constituency B Athy said they decided to resign from primary and active party membership and their respective party posts in protest against the suspension order served to sitting MLA, BS Nganlang, which they termed as unjust. The three clarified that the seven suspended MLAs and their supporters decided to support the NDPP candidate in the absence of an official NPF candidate in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha election. They asserted that NPF office had no moral right to suspend the seven NPF MLAs as rest of the opposition MLAs voted in favour of the Congress candidate. Meanwhile, in a separate letter to Liezietsu, NPF central general secretary Akang, secretary central Nokshom Konyak, NPF central youth wing vice-president Honpha Konyak and NPF central youth wing general secretary Kapwang Konyak also announced their resignation from active and primary membership of the party. They also informed the NPF president that they are joining Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party under the leadership of president Chingwang Konyak and chief minister Neiphiu Rio.

NDA may fall short of halfway mark: Punters NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (IANS): On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally commended Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik for the evacuation and relief measures undertaken by his government for Cyclone Fani. In many other ways, it appeared the BJP was reaching out to the longserving Biju Janata Dal strongman. Contrast that with the Prime Minister’s election campaign in Odisha on April 23 when he derided Patnaik, telling him that his exit was imminent and a few officers were not enough to save him. After the fifth phase of polling ended on Monday, IANS did a dipstick survey of the post-poll scenario based on feedback from the nation’s top ‘satta’ markets. The numbers showed that the NDA could fall short of the half way mark by a

bit. That would mean the regional satraps, who are now outside the NDA umbrella, could become very important after May 23. Punters have suggested that the NDA could get around 240 seats (plus or minus 10) and the UPA around 145 (plus or minus 10). Among the regional satraps, the Uttar Pradesh ‘mahagathbandhan’, the DMK, the Trinamool Congress, YSR Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti are likely to do very well. The satta markets located in Hapur, Delhi, Phalodi (Rajasthan), Indore, Kolkata, Agra, Bhavnagar, Mumbai and Nagpur are still betting on the NDA led by Narendra Modi to emerge as the largest pre-poll alliance, and stay well ahead of the UPA, but the earlier enthusiasm among punters of a runaway NDA victory is no longer evident.

The big losses are likely to come in Uttar Pradesh, where the NDA cornered 73 seats in 2014. The punters believe that this time, while the NDA will stave off the challenge from the Bahujan Samaj Party-Samajwadi Party ‘mahagathbandhan’ to the extent that it will get more seats, it will still be a pared down performance with the NDA likely to get about 40 seats as against around 34 seats of the BSPSP combine. Punters says there will be losses in Bihar too, which had supported the NDA in 2014, and the BJP-led alliance could get around 25 seats this time as against 15 of the Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance. The sequence of likely pared down electoral performances could continue in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh while there Gujarat might not see a BJP sweep.

NPAD demands release of ROP arrear

DIMAPUR, MAY 7 (NPN): Nagaland Pensioners’ Association Dimapur (NPAD) has appealed to principal accountant general (Pr AG), Kohima to release all ROP arrear without any further delay to pensioners and family pensioners. In the appeal, NPAD president SK Kenye cautioned that the delay will attract 18% rate of interest as per a Supreme Court ruling. NPAD reminded the Pr AG that Supreme Court had ruled that pension is not a bounty, but a differed wage and that its payment does not depend upon the discretion of the government, but is governed by rules on the subject. The association said as per the State finance department’s notification (No. FIN/ROP/2/83 dated Kohima, the 18th June 1987) on applicability of Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules 1972 in Nagaland, all rules with updated amendments and decisions by Government of India shall be

deemed to have been automatically adopted by the State government. The association explained that in compliance with Central government directives, the State finance department sanctioned for pre-2008 (vide Govt. letter No.FIN/ESTT – 2/9/ROP/PEN/2016, dated 20-12-2017). Accordingly, the pensioners and family pensioners had already submitted required documents to the drawing and disbursing authorities concerned (respective bank branch managers and treasury officers) in April 2018, it added. Claiming that requisite documents regarding pensioners and family pensioners were already subsequently submitted to accountant general (AG) of Nagaland, Kohima by the drawing and disbursing authorities concerned (respective bank branch managers and treasury officers), NPAD lamented that so far not action has been taken by the AG.

Fuel prices likely to increase sharply after polls

NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (IANS): Petrol and diesel prices may increase sharply soon after new government comes to power at the Centre with oil companies look(Cont’d on p-7) ing to raise retail price of the two transport fuels between Rs 3-5 per litre in phases and make up for losses they incurred by keeping the prices at artificially low levels in the run up to elections 2019. Government sources said that oil companies sold petrol at almost Rs 5 per litre discount and diesel at Rs 3 per litre discount in March and April when average crude oil price of Indian basket hit a high of about $ 67 a barrel and $ 71 barrel respectively. At this level of crude oil prices (of over $70 “Why only one or two a barrel), petrol was priced surgical strikes? if our at over Rs 78 a litre and party comes to power, we’ll have surgical strikes diesel over Rs 70 a litre in August, 2018. every week.” It is, however, priced at

no guidelines for this”. Sibal also joined the arguments and said the poll panel had earlier “misled the court” on this aspect. To this, CJI said, “This is a review petition. We are not obliged to hear you in an open court.” During the hearing, opposition leaders including Naidu, National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah and CPI’s MP D Raja were present in the courtroom. These leaders had sought a review of the court’s order, saying the “increase from one to five is not a reasonable number and does not lead to satisfaction desired by this court”. “The petitioners submit that the aforesaid increase to a mere 2 per cent is not sufficient and will not make any

substantial difference to the situation that existed prior to the passing of the impugned order,” they said. “ T h e r e f o r e, e v e n though the petitioners have succeeded on merits of their contention, their success does not resolve their grievance or cause any meaningful change to the situation that they were originally aggrieved,” the plea said. Referring to earlier observations of the apex court, it said the 2 per cent increase in random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs would not achieve the purpose of raising “public confidence in the integrity of the electoral process”. The plea opposed the poll panel’s argument, which was earlier accepted by the court. “It is submitted that, once this court agrees that the number of EVMs that should be subjected to VVPAT verification should be increased to a ‘reasonable number’, not increasing the same to a number which is ‘reasonable’ because it may not be ‘viable’ to do so renders the entire exercise otiose and futile,” the plea had said.

EC clean chit to PM over ‘Corrupt No. 1’ comment

around Rs 73 and Rs 66.66 per litre now respectively suggesting that oil marketing companies (OMCs) losing again heavily on retail sale of two products. “Oil PSUs have avoided hiking oil prices in tandem with global crude rates for almost two months now and the pattern may well continue till the end of May when elections g e t s over. So, i t would not come as a surprise if domestic oil prices witness a shar p spike after the election season comes to a close unless the new government issues fresh advisory to stagger the required hike to prevent a public outrage,” said an energy sector expert of a global audit and consulting firm. OMCs have been soft on

increasing petrol and diesel prices since the beginning of 2019 but it has become more pronounced from March when election dates were announced. Since March, there have been numerous days when both petrol and diesel prices have remained static despite sharp movement in global oil prices. While experts term this a big loss for o i l

companies, officials in leading oil sector PSUs said that as the retail price of petrol and diesel are determined on the basis of global oil prices in trailing 15 day period and also as prices are determined on the basis of movement of international petrol and diesel prices and not crude oil,

retail prices could remain static even through crude prices move. While OMCs have built losses on sale of petrol and diesel by not carrying forward the requisite hikes during election time, they have not shied from passing any cut in retail price of the auto fuel when international crude price has shown some softening in the month of May. Petrol price has been cut by almost 7 paisa and diesel by 5 paisa since May 4. “We have to remember companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum, and Bharat petroleum are all government run companies. So even if petrol and diesel prices are, so called, freed from any administered control, government still continues to use its hold over the companies to get prices that they feel is right for a particular time,” said an official source. Post LS polls, Assam focuses on RS seats

BJP has agreed that one Rajya Sabha seat would be given to AGP.

GUWAHATI, MAY 7 (IANS): Following the completion of the Lok Sabha polls in Assam, parties in the state are now focussing on the two Rajya Sabha seats which are set to fall vacant next month. The seats are held by senior Congress members, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and politician Santiuse Kujur. Their terms will come to an end on June 14. According to sources, the Election Commission

(EC) is likely to issue a notification soon for holding polls for the two seats. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on the other hand, has reminded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of an agreement that was inked between the two parties ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The AGP supported the BJP in 10 Lok Sabha seats, while it contested on three seats. It was also agreed that one of the Rajya Sabha seats would be given

to the AGP. “There was an agreement ahead of the Lok Sabha polls that the BJP will give one Rajya Sabha seat to us. Accordingly we fielded only three candidates in the general elections and helped the BJP candidates in 10 seats. Now the time has come to remind them about the agreement,” AGP General Secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita told IANS on Tuesday. Kalita’s statement assumes significance as BJP

legislator from the Bokajan constituency, Numal Momin, had recently claimed that the saffron party will name nominees for the two seats. Meanwhile, the Congress is unlikely to field anyone this time as it does not have the required number to ensure victory of its candidate, a senior party leader said. “We do not have the required number to ensure victory even if we put up a candidate. So I think the party is going too refrain from putting up candidates for Rajya Sabha this time,” he added. A candidate requires at least 43 first preference votes to win a Rajya Sabha seat. While the Congress has 25 legislators in the House, the All India United Democratic Front has 13 legislators. The ruling BJP has 61 legislators in the 126member Assam Legislative Assembly. Its allies, AGP and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) has 14 and 12 members, respectively. The BJP-led alliance also has the support of Independent legislators.

Post-mortem

Poll season in India

Vol. XXIX NO. 150 Dimapur, WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2019

Low voltage

oads and power are two important aspects which play crucial roles in the lives of the common people everyday. Roads in Nagaland are still in deplorable conditions and the worst off are those that hardly exist in far flung districts. However, more than roads is the perennial source of dismay- electric power which is again sending alarming reminders that erratic supply and long cuts are on the way with onset of summer. This invariably means that summer and power cuts are going to be the most dreaded of combinations. Those living in the plains particularly Dimapur, face an unrelenting heat and humidity and have to bear the added brunt of regular load shedding. Despite over a decade of “streamlining” or corporatisation of the department of power (DoP), the situation has only marginally improved. A very significant element that has led to power shortage is what was termed as ‘avoidable losses’ supposedly in transmission. DoP has been laying blame on unbridgeable gap between purchase price and sale price of power. In the past several years, it was almost a regular feature of the department to announce loss amounting to around of over Rs.100 crore annually which was blamed on supposed theft and pilferage. The accumulated total loss from all these has been pegged at around 55% to 60% which is equivalent to 30MW to 40MW out of the total power that the state receives. Blaming the same factors every year can no longer hold water but rather becomes an alibi. If there is shortage then there has to be a reason such as rise in demand during the peak summer months. However, this also is not acceptable since summer is a regular annual season and for which the DoP is not ignorant about it. When the power loss in Nagaland is almost 50% and double the national average, it only calls for serious probe on why this abnormal figure continues to plague power supply and most interestingly, accepted as that for so many years. Inefficiency cannot be allowed to get away under the guise of ‘transmission loss’, when consumers are handed contestable bills owing to improper metering or inefficiency. If the real culprits responsible for power losses are not identified, then even additional power generation in future with thermal power will end up in a similar manner. In counties like South Korea, the loss is 7 % and in China, it is 9 %.Most states in India are making serious efforts to tackle the problem which has proved to be the bottleneck for efficient distribution to a power hungry nation. Given the fact that there are no industries, what it means is that even domestic consumption cannot be met. The north east generates adequate power which can feed the entire region and during monsoon, the quantity should be more than enough to spare. The ground reality indicates that there are factors responsible for poor and inefficient power supply. The Association of Power Engineers Nagaland (APEN) has been raising the issue in public domain in order to make consumer aware about the situation that the department is in. APEN had also warmed of a likely and impending collapse of the power system in Nagaland. Unless the power situation improves there cannot be any economic progress in the state.

DailyDevotion Building For Eternity Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it… —Luke 14:28 Our Lord was not referring here to a cost which we have to count, but to a cost which He has already counted. The cost was those thirty years in Nazareth, those three years of popularity, scandal, and hatred, the unfathomable agony He experienced in Gethsemane, and the assault upon Him at Calvary— the central point upon which all of time and eternity turn. Jesus Christ has counted the cost. In the final analysis, people are not going to laugh at Him and say, “This man began to build and was not able to finish” (Luke 14:30). The conditions of discipleship given to us by our Lord in verses 26, 27, and 33 mean that the men and women He is going to use in His mighty building enterprises are those in whom He has done everything. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple ” (Luke 14:26). This verse teaches us that the only men and women our Lord will use in His building enterprises are those who love Him personally, passionately, and with great devotion— those who have a love for Him that goes far beyond any of the closest relationships on earth. The conditions are strict, but they are glorious. All that we build is going to be inspected by God. When God inspects us with His searching and refining fire, will He detect that we have built enterprises of our own on the foundation of Jesus? (see 1 Corinthians 3:10-15). We are living in a time of tremendous enterprises, a time when we are trying to work for God, and that is where the trap is. Profoundly speaking, we can never work for God. Jesus, as the Master Builder, takes us over so that He may direct and control us completely for His enterprises and His building plans; and no one has any right to demand where he will be put to work.

Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work. ~ Stephen King

Nagaland Post, Dimapur WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2019

P

erceptions vary—the test of largest democracy or simply the dance of democracy in the world or celebration of democracy in a multi-party in India’s political system or a festival that has mix of lies, fake news, exaggerations, theatrics, biopic, rhetoric and war of words. Hence India is in the midst of height of festival of campaigning and polling. This time polling is being programmed in phased manner and the whole exercise unfolds numerous intricacies and complexities and in that it’s interesting to observe and note what the candidates that include ministers and the Prime Minister are saying. As I watch the TV debates and read the speeches and counter-speeches our politicians and candidates utter in the periodicals and the dailies, I’m reminded of George Orwell. George Orwell captured the narratives rhetoric and slogans that the politicians use candidly which he brings to the fore in his book 1984 and the phrase he invoked: “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” It’s true that when the conflicts and wars are justified for the sake of ‘peace’—all in the name of ‘peace’. The wars against Afghanistan and Iraq were justified by the Americans and the British and NATO allies. Conflicts in Middle East, within and between regions and continents are endorsed and rationalized—all ‘in the name of peace’. Populists use ‘surgical strikes’, Nukes and host of others against the neighboring countries all in the name of ‘security’, and ‘safety’—all in the name of protecting the ‘sovereignty of the nation’. The phrases Orwell use are apt. Electorates and citizens are kept in the dark—all in the ignorance and for the politicians it’s bliss. Lies and counter-lies, news in the social media and many TV channels are twisted in such ways none knows whether they are true or fake

W

hen I think casually of what I do possess or own that will cause me to give thanks, to be grateful, nothing much really came to mind. Now when I took time out to ponder on it, I find there are many things that had simply skipped my mind or just had not registered. There are, in fact, many, many things for which I need to express gratefulness for! I have taken plenty for granted, this shouldn’t be the case. Now that I am aware of how fortunate I have been and am, I will be ever mindful of this good precious life and will give thanks daily to my living God. There are many things that are so ordinary, so common that they have been taken for granted. Pondering on them convinced me that they should not be so taken. My Blessings: “Health is wealth” - I have heard this since I was in my early teens but it didn’t register or make any impression on me. The truth of this saying was finally realized when I myself walked past the half century mark. At this stage of life it finally dawned on me that I did not have the same strength and agility I used to possess in my younger years. Seeing my contemporaries and those older than myself struck down by illnesses and sicknesses confirmed the truth of this phrase. Health is really wealth if not more than wealth, you may be the richest person in the world but if your health is feeble you won’t be able to enjoy what your wealth can get you, this is a fact. Family - Having a partner who is a self-sacrificing wife and mother is a great gift to any man and I am one

and so citizens and electorates are caught in the climate that utters ‘ignorance is strength’. And another phrase Orwell uses is “Freedom is slavery”— which is also nuanced in such a way what do you do with the freedom—which presupposes your freedom is subject to certain conditionality. Therefore freedom as a concept is relative and conditional, and never absolute. Benevolent dictators or even benevolent democrats say that what do you do with freedom if it does not take care of the basic essential of existence and so freedom of expression and host of others are just illusionary concepts. Popular leaders and those who want to get connected with the electorates particularly the poor claim that they work for the poor and their development. Take for instance, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who used the slogan “Indira Hatao” and “Garibi Hatao” and also coined a phrase “India is Indira and Indira is India”. In tune to this, the present PM Modi used his name in his electioneering more than anything. Classic example is when a section of the electorates were asked to whom they would be voting in unison they said for Modi and hardly have they uttering the name of the party—BJP. When the journalist in their interview ask they retort back by saying: “party is bigger than individuals”, but in reality their charisma wins the elections and party takes the back-stage. Taking former Prime Minsiter Indira Gandhi and the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi as parallel examples since they hail from two opposing political ideologies and parties, Indira Gandhi used “eradicate poverty” and Modi in 2014 pledged to serve “the poorest of the poor”, primarily eradicating corruption black money and so on—and take the country to new path of development thereby transforming the country into ‘New India’.

Accordingly PM Modi initiated Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Act (MANKEGA) that provides jobs and minimum wages for those living below the poverty line. On similar vein, the President of the Congress Party Rahul Gandhi pledged to the electorates that if elected to power he promised that poverty shall be completely eradicated from India and so he introduced a minimal amount (livable) for those who live in abject poverty. Contrary to these poll promises the ground reality is the gap between the rich and the poor which is widening indicating and thus implying that the inequality is on the increase. About 10 per cent of the richest Indians garnered 73 per cent of the nation’s wealth and 58 per cent of it was in the hands of ‘one per cent’ (which the world average is 50 per cent). The politicians use the ‘poor’ for their poll planks by invoking ‘poverty’ till they get elected and once in power they abandon the promises made and what they said in their political manifestoes. Hence, Orwellian quotes and phrases continue to shed new meanings and new insights. For instance, “If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.” Just a fascinating one so well constructed. This is what happening in the recent polls. The top leaders of the political parties have hit the ground zero low in hitting at the opponents in such manners and below the belts that the electorates have never experienced. Thoughts and language go together, and if thoughts are not moderated they eventually become dreadful and thus corroded and so the delivery of the thoughts by way of language becomes so horrifying and demeaning. Orwell is right who cleverly fused thought and language dynamic and both are integral in formation and application. Dr. John Mohan Razu

My dying phone and hazards faced by lineman

here are occupation related hazards in many line of work but none as high as in Power Department. Most of our linesmen work on an unsustainable fixed pay salary as low as 3400 pm, working 7 days a week, 30 days a month, round the clock, with no shift change unlike other essential departments, in all weather and terrain; especially busier during the storms and festive season. While we take shelter during the rains and floods, that is the time they step out to carry out their duty. When all offices go on vacation during the Christmas and New Year, that is the time they remain busiest. They spend their Christmas and New Year eves checking lines and preparing for any eventuality so that we the consumers can light up our pretty lights and trees. While we make merry and spend time with our loved ones, that is the time when their loved ones see them the least. Most of them don’t get time to even have a proper meal or get a good night’s rest. Being woken up early in the morning or late in the night by irate consumers to have them come and rectify their wiring issues/line faults is the normal routine in their lives. Today I heard many people wondering why there was no power (in Kohima), many enquired when it would be restored. I too waited eagerly because my phone battery was draining rapidly. Then news came that one of the lineman met with an accident while trying to repair/restore some lines. I am guilt ridden because while I was complaining about my dying phone someone was actually dying trying to save my dead battery. His condition is said to be critical (admitted to the ICU) and may not survive the accident. This is not something new for the department. They’ve lost countless hardworking individuals over the years through accidents and mishaps. Today, I want us to ponder over our own reactions and attitudes toward these selfless, hardworking individual. They are the reason we enjoy our heaters in the cold winters or our AirCons in

the sweltering summer nights, our phones and laptops stay charged for us to enjoy our games and movies. I wish we could cultivate a little more compassion for these people, learn to be a little more grateful for their contribution, maybe even put our feet in their shoes and be a little kinder to them. Working as a linesman in the power department itself is the greatest test of character and patience. Many people have come and gone unable to pass that test, and those who have remained are really the strongest bunch. True, there are rogues in every basket but I urge you not to judge everyone the same just because of the misfortune you have had of having met one who didn’t please you. Next time you see one of them working in the dead of the night or under the hot noon sun, a cup of tea or a glass of cold water could be the greatest thank you they could receive from you. There are some departments in Nagaland with a humungous personnel size under their payroll, triple/quadruple the size of Power Department. But aside from a bitter comment here and there, the public doesn’t act out as aggressively towards their nonperformance as they do when there is power failure, or when the colony linesman is unable to resolve a crisis on time. We often hear of linesmen being physically manhandled but do we ever hear of drain cleaners being bashed up for clogged drains? Understaffing is one of the biggest reasons affecting the quality of service in the state and the hardship faced by the overworked staff. This is a matter which needs to be taken up in earnest by the government if it is serious about improving the quality of power to its people. But until such time that the government decides to increase the workforce of this very vital department, maybe we need to show some kindness to these people who literally put their life on the line of fire everyday. Counting my blessings of those blessed man (Cf. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies; Ps. 128:3 Thy wife [shall be] as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table; Prov 5:18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.. ). Usually a man and wife spend more than half of their life-spans with each other. Pity is a man who has to spend half a life time stuck with a nagging, demanding and self-centered woman. Just imagine what a living hell that is. I thank God always for giving me a wonderful wife. Having children (Ps 127:3 – 5 Lo, children [are] an heritage of the Lord: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward. As arrows [are] in the hand of a mighty man; so [are] children of the youth. Happy [is] the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate) can be a great source of happiness or it can be just a severe source of pain and suffering for the parents. Though I have my ups and downs with my children, they have never been a source of severe pain and suffering for me. This I count as a blessing having seen what many unfortunate parents had gone through. Friends: If I have lived to this age and cannot claim to have some good friends then I could not consider to have lived a very meaningful life. Fortunately there are a few of them openly professed to be my friends, to them I want to say I consider this one of the blessings in my life. I would like to thank them for this privilege. To have their re-

spect I am most honored and I treasure my friendship with them. Words could not adequately express my appreciation of their concerns and love. Extended family members: My genogram (family lineage) indicates large family throughout. And I happen to marry a wife from much larger family members (eleven siblings from my wife side and eight siblings from my family). And so I have a vast extended family. There are more than three hundred extended family members being added to my life.I have learnt that if ever two persons were to meet then there must be affinity between them. To be able to become family members this must be even more so. I treasure the synergy generated when there is problems confronting any member of the family. The gaiety and merriment that flow out of any happy gatherings is something to be experienced to be appreciated. I enjoy all these. Of course with more people in the family there bound to have its squabbles and frictions but in the end the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. The support, concern and closeness when these relatives close ranks are what I appreciate most. A house to live in: Television and internet has shrunk the world, what is happening in one part of the worldcan be instantaneously seen in all the other parts of the world. We now know that there are many in many parts of the world who do not have a roof over their heads. Many others are without them, either they cannot afford them, or the environment and circumstances deprive them of the opportunities. I see them as blessings given me, I count

myself bountifullyblessed not having deprived of a roof in all my years of existence. Good life: Many of us are fortunate ones have never experienced empty stomachs or have to go without clothes to shield us from the cold. We not only have ample food, we also have nutritious foods, and just in case we do not have a balanced diet we have vitamin supplements. We not only have clothes, we have expensive and stylish clothes. Many children, men and women go about without shoes, we not only have shoes, we can choose what color of shoes we would wear each day, our toddlers go about in branded-shoes. I have learnt never to abuse this privilege. I will be mindful of my blessings. No financial obligations/burdens: Such financial obligations and burdens have destroyed many men who have to shoulder them. The hardships caused by them have broken the spirits of even the hardiest of men. Circumstances and unpredictable phenomenon have conspired to bring them sorrows and pain but they have conspired to bring men like me peace of mind and ease of life. I am truly blessed. Freedom: Those of us who have always enjoy the freedom to move about, to do what we like, practice what we believe have often taken these as our natural rights. Hardly am I aware these are not natural to me, that they are not part of my DNA. Many things come together to bring about the flowering of this freedom, so this should definitely be considered as one of the blessings that have been bestowed on me. I am grateful to be living in a country

of freedom, being able to travel around the world for several times over, having privilege to be able to live in many countries – some for a month and years together in some. Comforts of life: I once own several vehicles which I used to travel about whereas many people in many other parts of the world and even in my own country have to move about on foot. I own a beautiful house, several acres of land, a big space of land in a city, worth enough to be called luxury by my home-city standard, two ponds near my house, a kitchen garden and not only have clean water to drink, I also have hot water facilities to make myself hot drinks. I have computers and lap-tops, mobile phone, television set, Photostat copier machine, washing machine and clothe drying machine and other modern facilities and amenities that create a comfortable and pleasant life for me and my family. Millions of our fellow beings out there are scavenging for their very existence every day. Am I not blessed? Peace of mind: Many

men and women have troubled minds. They find their lives directionless and empty. I am blessed to have found my spiritual direction in Jesus Christ and the Bible my daily guide. My mind is peaceful and I am contented. This is really priceless. This is wealth, this is health! What I had: Time tends to obscure many things from our past from even ourselves. Pondering on gratefulness allows many of the blessings which I have forgotten to surface:Parents: I had a wonderful pair of loving parents who served both as Spiritual leaders in our village church for several decades, provided love and who made sacrifices for me and my siblings. They were the one who instill the right values in us. These values provided the foundations that built traits and characters in me that steered me into the path, the direction I have embarked on. The strengths and resilience that allow me to navigate thus far come from all this. (To be concluded) Rev. Dr. L. Tsanso, pastor Pongidong village

Reader’s Post

Sir,

Give encouragement

While many successful students are being felicitated, there are those who would be crying in shame due to failure. Those who could not pass HSLC or the HSSLC need to be called by the respective schools and given motivational classes. Many students turn to antisocial activities once they are unable to pass through these milestones. Such students should be counselled with kindness and encouraged to prepare with sincerity in the next main exam. BJP an obstacle to Kerala’s progress: Vijayan Retd IAF man joins Cong; says

T hi r u v anan thapuram, May 7 (IANS): Days after a letter by state BJP chief P.S. SreedharanPillai written to the Centre asking it to stall a national highway project became public, Kerala Chief Minister PinarayiVijayan on Tuesday slammed the activities of the right wing forces for hindering the state’s development. “His letter came at a time when the Left government had revived

the process of land acquisition in the national highway development project cutting across our state,” Vijayan said after

chairing a cabinet meeting here. The Chief Minister was reacting to Pillai’s letter to Minister for Road Transport and Highways NitinGadkari. State Finance Minister Thomas Issac in a Facebook post had carried a picture of the Pillai letter, dated September 14, 2018, requesting to stay land acquisition proceedings for NH 66 which passes through the Edappally-Moothakunnam

route in Ernakulam district. In the letter, Pillai said that he has attached a representation by the “NH 17 SamyukthaSamrakshanaSamithi” of Ernakulam district, “with regard to the anxiety over the 3A notification and land acquisition proceedings of National Highway Authority of India”. “It is also requested to keep the land acquisition proceedings in abeyance for a while,” Pillai had told Gadkari.

NPCC chief flays Modi’s jibe at Rajiv Gandhi (From p-1) We miss him,” he stated. Accusing BJP as an opportunist party, the NPCC chief said it denies 60 years of Congress’ achievements but shamelessly enjoy the fruits. He said Modi’s five-year rule has no achievements and is therefore attacking 60 years of Congress rule and even late Rajiv Gandhi “for whom we are enjoying digital India today”. According to Therie, the former Prime Minister had taken

India forward to the global village of civilization. He remarked, “We owe all that we have today to the pioneers and founding fathers of Congress. We are second to none in the world, not because of BJP and I hope BJP leaders will agree with me.” Asserting that Modi will go down in history as the tallest liar as all his promises were lies, Therie said that all his allegations are also false. He said he agreed with Rahul Gandh that Modi’s

“karma” (fate) awaits him on May 23. Therie said Ram Madhav appears to be near honest for once for admitting that BJP will not be able to get majority and will need others. He said BJP will not only be short of majority but will be short one-third with its allies. He said when Modi will resign on May 23, many among BJP will be happier than Congress. “Thereafter, I can foresee Modi and Amit Shah’s places will be haunted,” he quipped.

PM politicising military’s work

Ahmedabad, May 7(PTI): Accusing Prime Minister NarendraModi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of ‘politicising’ the work of the armed forces, former Air Force veteran from Gujarat, Anil Kumar Kaushik, joined the Congress here on Tuesday. Kaushik served in the IAF for 17 years as a flight engineer before retiring in the 1990s at the rank of sergeant. Kaushik, who joined the Congress in the presence of Gujarat unit chief Amit Chavda, claimed he is upset the way PM Modi and other BJP leaders were seeking votes in the names of the armed forces. “The Congress never took credit for several important army operations, such as liberation of Goa and East Pakistan (that went on to become modern

day Bangladesh). Surgical strikes also took place in the past. But, the party (Congress) never used such army operations to get political mileage,” Kaushik told reporters. “However, today’s Bharatiya Janata Party government is politicising the Army’s work. Instead of talking about real issues, BJP leaders are seeking votes in the name of armed forces. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should not forget that he is the PM of entire country, not just of a party,” Kaushik said. Welcoming Kaushik in the party, Gujarat Congress president AmitChavda alleged Modi was trying to build his “political career” by repeatedly invoking armed forces’ operations.

New Delhi, May 7 (IANS): AAP’s South Delhi LokSabha candidate RaghavChadha feels people living in the national capital will vote for the work done by the party and its leader as well as Chief Minister ArvindKejriwal in the last four years. The 30-year-old chartered accountant jumped into politics in 2012 -when the AamAadmi Party (AAP) was born from the India Against Corruption movement. Chadha, who is pitted against BJP’s sitting MP Ramesh Bidhuri (57) and Congress’ celebrity candidate boxer Vijender Singh (33), also feels he will appeal to the youth as he is the youngest candidate. “This election is to defeat the BJP. It is between the people of Delhi and the BJP and its candidate Bhiduri.” Since taking power in 2015, the AAP has done a lot of work in the field of electricity, water supply, health and education, Chadha said. “In 70 years when the BJP and the Congress

ment, farmers and women. He should face the people and tell them what he has done for them over the past five years and what he plans to do in the future, she said. “You are the PM, you are a big leader of the BJP, you should understand this. Otherwise the people will teach you a lesson,” she said. “This election is about achievements of

sues. Sometimes they say the elephant was sleeping for 70 years, sometimes they seek votes in the name of martyrs, and at other times they insult those from my family who sacrificed their lives,” she added. “But they do not talk about your needs, your problems that need to be resolved,” she said. “These polls are not about one family, this election is about crores of families whose hopes and aspirations have been completely broken by this government and the prime minister,” she said. Former Union minister Selja is taking on the sitting BJP MP R L Kataria in Ambala.

PATNA, MAY 7 (IANS): Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday surrendered in a Bihar court in Begusarai district in connection with violation of model code of conduct and granted bail. According to the police Singh surrendered in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Thakur Aman Kumar. Singh, who is the BJP candidate from the BegusaraiLokSabha seat, had made communal remarks on April 24 during an election meeting, where BJP President Amit Shah was also present. Singh had said in Hindi: “Those who cannot say VandeMataram or cannot respect the motherland, the nation will never forgive them. My ancestors died at the Simariaghat and

When pointed out that BJP candidates also feel that their party will get votes due to Prime Minister NarendraModi, he said that Bidhuri was not an ideal candidate and people were scared to go to his office or approach him with their issues. “People are unhappy with the BJP MP. They are scared to approach him. They feel he can beat and abuse them when contacted. The way he talks and deals with people will turn out to be a major factor in the elections. People want an educated and honest man who can understand the issues and can resolve them.”

Priyanka Gandhi said the people of the country are wise. “You cannot mislead the people. The people of this country make every leader answerable and they will make you answerable as well,” she said. She attacked Modi for recently saying that Rajiv Gandhi’s life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari Number 1’. “When BJP leaders go out to campaign, they do not talk about issues. Ambala (Har), May 7 (PTI) In a veiled attack on Prime Minister NarendraModi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Tuesday said the Mahabharata character Duryodhana too had “such arrogance”. Addressing a public meeting here, she also criticised Modi for calling her late father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi “Bhrashtachari Number 1” (the most corrupt). “I will insist on rescue of a viable company”, he said. CoC is the group of financial creditors who take the call on the resolution plan. The regulator said that the CoC must create a favourable impression about the underlying value of the indebted firm, and encourage submission of appropriate resolution plans for reorganisation of the firm by the resolution applicants. Sahoo is of the view that the commercial decisions which a CoC is required to take in a Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) resolution plan is towards reorganising the firm as a going concern so as to maximise the value of its assets. The regulator had recently opined that if an NPA firm is viable, then the CoC must visualise the resolution plan required for its reorganisation. A resolution plan may entail various measures ranging from a change of management, technology or product portfolio to the acquisition or disposal of assets, businesses or undertakings and the restructuring of ownership, balance sheets or organisation, among others.

New Delhi, May 7 (IANS): The Committee of Creditors (CoC) of a nonperforming asset (NPA or bad loan) account must provide all relevant information and share its vision for the company under resolution with the prospective resolution applicants in order to come up with a rescue plan, the insolvency regualtor has said. “CoC must provide the resolution applicants all relevant information like a promoter does while making an IPO (initial public offer). In such a case a prospectus is issued, roadshows are organised and promoters share their vision so that people believe in him and subscribe to the issue,” the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) Chairperson M.S. Sahoo told IANS in an interview. “Similarly, the CoCs have to share its vision for the company under resolution so that RAs (resolution applicants) show interest and come up with a plan if they find the option viable.” The IBBI Chairperson said that this is also important to prevent companies from going into liquidation as this should only be the last option when all other efforts fail.

on May 2. “There could be two to four more open market operations by the RBI in the next two months (June-July) of similar quantum,” the second official said. “We are also in discussions for more forex swaps after the elections,” he added. A third official said the RBI would probably review the amount of rupees in circulation in June and determine the liquidity required by the banking system before finalising details of the rupees for dollars swap auction. The RBI’s two $5 billion buy/sell swap auctions in March and April together injected close to 700 billion rupees into the banking system, which bank officials hoped would enable banks to lower interest rates for borrowers. “It cannot be loose money that you give to the market. Liquidity infusion will be done as per market requirement,” the first official said.

E c o n o m i c g r ow t h slowed to 6.6 percent in the October-December quarter, the worst in five quarters, and economists see a further slowdown in JanuaryMarch largely due to high interest rates and surging oil prices. Despite cutting its key policy rate by 50 basis points this year to 6 percent, the RBI has struggled to get banks to reduce lending rates due to tight cash conditions and high deposit rates. The RBI wants the real interest rate - the delta between the inflation rate and rate people pay to borrow - to ease for borrowers, a separate government official said. NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, May 7 (Agencies): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will probably conduct at least one more swap of rupees for dollars after the general election, said three officials with direct knowledge of the plan, part of an effort to support economic growth. The central bank also plans to conduct open market operations of up to 500 billion rupees over the next two months, one of the officials said, expanding a quantitative easing programme to spur the slowing economy. These latest moves are expected to increase cash in the financial system and help push interest rates down, potentially helping borrowers where an interest rate cut has not. “We want to make sufficient liquidity available, but we cannot open the floodgates of liquidity. US military deployment in Middle East ‘bluff’: Iran Tehran, May 7 (IANS): Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has described the US military deployment in the Middle East as “psychological warfare” by Washington against Tehran. US National Security Adviser John Bolton announced on Monday the deployment of an aircraft carrier and a special group of bombers in the region to “send a clear and unequivocal message to the Iranian regime that any attack on US interests or its allies will face an implacable force”. He added that “the US is not seeking a war against the Iranian regime”, but is prepared to “respond to any attack”. In response to the move, Iranian National Security Council’s spokesman Keyvan Khosravi called Bolton’s statement a “bluff ” and “an awkward resource for the purposes of psychological warfare”, state TV

reported. “Bolton does not understand military and security issues, his comments are meant to draw attention.” Khosravi said that “it is unlikely that US Army commanders will choose to test the capabilities of the Iranian Armed Forces”, Efe news reported. Iranian Defence Minister Amir Hatami said that Tehran “will defeat the psychological warfare of enemies”. Tensions have increased in the Persian Gulf since Washington announced in April the end of the exemptions it had granted to India, China, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey, in buying Iranian oil. Tehran responded by saying that if the US blocks its oil exports it could close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important marine trade routes.

lims in conflict-hit Rakhine state, where the Myanmar army forced some 740,000 of the stateless minority to flee over the border to Bangladesh. The case prompted an outcry around the world and crushed what was left of Suu Kyi’s legacy as a rights defender. Reuters has said the two were imprisoned in retaliation for their expose. The army convicted soldiers for the massacre in a

rare response to allegations of atrocities. While inside, the duo missed numerous family milestones, including the birth of Wa Lone’s daughter. But they were also showered with numerous awards and honours in response to their work. Last month, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo won the prestigious Pulitzer prize. They were also featured earlier on the cover of TIME magazine as part of its person of the year coverage featuring journalists targeted for their reporting. The case against them become a byword for the war against press freedom and prompted an international campaign that attracted the support of prominent rights lawyer Amal Clooney. Rights groups and legal experts say the case against the reporters was riddled with irregularities. A whistleblowing police officer testified during their trial that his superior had ordered his team to trap the reporters in a sting -testimony the judge chose to ignore.

Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency of North Sumatra erupted Tuesday morning.

J a k a r t a , M ay 7 (Agencies): An Indonesian volcano erupted Tuesday, sending a massive column of ash and smoke 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) into the air, coating local villages in debris. Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island -- which has been rumbling since 2010 and saw a deadly eruption in 2016 -- spewed the thick plume after activity picked up recent days. Disaster agency officials said the eruption has

the “potential” to affect flights, but it had not issued a formal notice for planes to avoid the area. Local residents living along rivers near the crater were advised to be on alert for possible lava flows. There were no reports of injuries or deaths after the latest eruption and the disaster agency did not issue an evacuation order. No one lives inside a previously announced no-go zone around the volcano. Sinabung roared back

to life in 2010 for the first time in 400 years. After another period of inactivity it erupted once more in 2013, and has remained highly active since. In 2016, seven people died in one of Sinabung’s eruptions, while a 2014 eruption killed 16. Indonesia is home to around 130 active volcanoes due to its position on the “Ring of Fire”, a belt of tectonic plate boundaries circling the Pacific Ocean where frequent seismic activity occurs.

India, Germany, Brazil, Japan needed at UNSC as permanent members: France U n i t e d Nat i o n s, May 7 (PTI): India and nations like Germany, Brazil and Japan are “absolutely needed” as permanent members of a reformed and enlarged UN Security Council to better reflect contemporary realities and the addition of these key members to the UN hightable is among France’s “strategic” priorities, the French envoy to the UN has said. India is at the forefront of efforts at the UN to push for the long-pending reform of the Security Council,

emphasising that it rightly deserves a place at the UN high table as a permanent member. “In terms of policy, France and Germany have strong policy which is to work together to enlarge the Security Council and to succeed in terms of the negotiations that should lead to the enlargement of the Security Council that we consider absolutely needed to better reflect the world as it is. There is no question about it,” France’s Permanent Representative to the

UN François Delattre told reporters here last week. Speaking along side German envoy to the UN Christoph Heusgen at the end of Germany’s Presidency of the Council for April, Delattre emphasised that France considers that “Germany, Japan, India, Brazil and a fair representation of Africa in particular are absolutely needed at the table to get towards a fairer representation of the Security Council. This is for us a matter of priority.” He underlined that Paris believes the enlarge-

ment of the Security Council with the addition of a few key members is “one of our strategic priorities.” Noting that when Fr a n c e a n d G e r m a n y launched their alliance for multi-materialism, he said it signifies that the two nations strongly believe in the UN as the core of today’s global gover nance and that they strongly believe in “multi-lateralism and means that we are actively working to reform and in some respects to refound, reinvent multi-lateralism so that it is really efficient for

sion in both of the existing categories specified in the Charter. “In short, more than 90 per cent of the written submissions in the document are in favour of expansion in both categories of membership specified in the Charter,” he had said. Akbaruddin had said that while reform at the UN is a process rather than an event, “there is no process known to us here that has traversed winding pathways in the manner as this process of the Reform of the Security Council.”

JUBA, May 7 (Agencies): A bush fire fanned by gusty winds has gutted four villages in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal region, killing 33 people, the president’s spokesman said, adding the toll was likely to rise. The spokesman said in a statement late on Monday that 60 other people were in a critical condition after the fire on Sunday. “The injured are receiving medication which is not sufficient given the remote state of the area in which the incident has taken place,” Ateny Wek Ateny said in a statement at the statehouse on Monday evening. On Tuesday, Mathok Wal, Lol State’s information minister, said the fire had also destroyed 138 houses in the villages in Korok East County and killed 10,000 cattle.

Rawalpindi, May 7 (IANS): Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Tuesday detained seven people, including three Chinese men, on suspicion of being involved in human trafficking, a day after arresting 10 Chinese nationals on similar charges. Authorities accuse these men of allegedly arranging fake marriages with Pakistani girls before forcing them into prostitution in China. The men are also accused of using the young girls for organ removal. Seven people including three Chinese were arrested by FIA Rawalpindi on Tuesday. The gang was led by a Chinese national Song Chuaoyang, Geo News reported. FIA busted a similar racket of 10 Chinese nationals on Monday. A senior official at the FIA in Lahore, said its anti-human trafficking cell also rounded up four Pakistani partners in the prostitution ring.

Yangon, May 7 (AFP): Two Reuters journalists who had been jailed for their reporting on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar walked out of prison Tuesday, freed in a presidential amnesty after a global campaign for their release. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were mobbed by media as they stepped out of Yangon’s notorious Insein prison after their lengthy detention. Their December 2017 arrests made them an international cause celebre and a sign of Myanmar’s deteriorating press freedoms under Nobel laureate and civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Wa Lone, 33, thanked people from “around the world” for advocating for their release and vowed he would return to work. “I can’t wait to go to my newsroom,” he said. “I am a journalist and I am going to continue.” Reuters editor-in-chief Stephen Adler said: “We are enormously pleased that Myanmar has released our courageous reporters”. “Since their arrests 511

Cong shows Chouhan Modi’s anti-Rajiv comments spur more to join campaign farm loan waiver docs

BHOPAL, MAY 5 (PTI): Senior Congress leader Suresh Pachouri on Tuesday dumped loads of documents at former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s residence as a ‘proof ’ that his party has waived loans of 21 lakh farmers after coming to power in the state in December last year. However, Chouhan refuted the Congress’ claims, dubbing it as a “bundle of lies”. Former Union minister Pachouri along with state minister P C Sharma and other Congress leaders brought cartons of documents in two vehicles near

Chouhan’s residence. They then put the cartons on their heads and walked to the former chief minister’s official residence where they dumped the documents. The Congress claimed that these documents proved the Kamal Nath government has acted on the party’s pre-poll promise of waiving farm loans. Chouhan was, however, not convinced with the Congress’ claim. Talking to reporters at his residence after the Congress leaders left, he rejected the documentary evidence, terming it a “bundle of lies”.

fight to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Along with some other leaders, we shall start canvassing in a few constituencies, and more if required, from May 10,” Shetti told IANS. Formerly with the ruling NDA, the SSS is now part of the 56-party Mahagathbandhan in Maharashtra, led by the CongressNationalist Congress Party, with Shetti attempting his third consecutive term as MP from Hathkanangle in the state. All India Kisan Sabha’s General Secretary Hannan Mollah just completed his grueling month-long campaign for the past five phases in different parts of India. “The AIKS has deployed other national leaders for the remaining two phases in West Bengal and in farmer-dominated constituencies in other states,” Mollah told IANS. Utagi and Shetti said the intention was to defeat the BJP and the ‘dictatorship’ of Modi. Utagi added that the BJP campaign had become “shriller with attacks on martyrs” as Modi had sensed defeat and was desperately going all out to intimidate other political parties or their supporters, especially in West Bengal,

Indian sailors’ abduction: Sushma asks highest level action New Delhi, May 7 (IANS): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday asked the Indian High Commissioner in Nigeria to take the abduction of five Indian sailors by pirates in the African nation two weeks ago, at the “highest level”. The Minister also asked Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur, to prepare a report over the incident. “I have seen news reports about abduction of five Indian sailors by pirates in Nigeria. I am asking Indian High Commissioner

to take this up at the highest level with Government of Nigeria for their release. Abhay - Please take this up and send me a report. @india_nigeria,” Sushma Swaraj said in a tweet. According to reports, it has been over two weeks since the sailors were abducted. Their families said that they have been unable to contact them for several days. Earlier, Bhagyashree Das, wife of one of the abducted sailor Sudeep Kumar Choudhury, appealed to Sushma Swaraj on Twitter saying her husband has been

sued a public statement condemning Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making “derogatory and untrue” remarks about former PM Rajiv Gandhi. Their statement came after Modi in a rally on Saturday targeted Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the Rafale issue and said, “Your father was termed ‘Mr Clean’ by his courtiers, but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari No 1’ (corrupt number 1).” “Narendra Modi has lowered the dignity of the office of the Prime Minister by making derogatory and untrue remarks about the late Rajivji, who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation,” the statement issued on Monday night and signed by 207 teachers read. No Prime Minister had ever “stooped” to this level through such actions as had Modi, it said. The statement has also been tweeted by the Gandhi family’s close aide and Congress leader Sam Pitroda. The nation acknowledges the achieve200 DU teachers ments of former prime minRajiv Gandhi, they said slam Modi on Rajiv ister in the statement. Gandhi remarks “History records the Over 200 Delhi Uni- deeds of the good and the versity teachers have is- noble, but rarely does it pay Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A prominent force in farmlands and Vidarbha, Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS) chief Kishore Tiwari, said the BJP had kept out “all important farmers leaders from the campaign which is restricted to just one individual”. “There are demands from various farmers groups and activists affiliated to the BJP but these have been ignored. So, instead of farm leaders, its only Modi who is speaking for the peasantry,” rued Tiwari, who is Chairman of Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavalamban Mission, enjoying Ministerial status in Maharashtra. According to him, “the BJP will pay dearly” for the manner in which it has betrayed and earned the wrath of the agriculture community all over India in past five years. AIKS President Ashok Dhawale said his organisation had been “preparing for the 2019 elections since the past four years” and its struggle was not only election-oriented.

The statement had references to the 1999 Kargil war and the telecommunication revolution when Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister. “When India beat back the invaders from Kargil, our soldiers shouted slogans praising Rajiv Gandhi for the Bofors gun even though Rajivji had been martyred a decade ago,” the statement read. “If our IT companies earn, each year, billions of dollars in foreign revenue it is because of the farsighted wisdom of Rajivji. If India is connected as a nation through the advances in the telecom sector it is because of the policies and actions of Rajivji,” it said. According to the statement, if train travel is so much more convenient today it is because of his (Rajiv Gandhi) acumen in computerising rail reservation. The statement was also signed by former Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) president Aditya Narayan Misra, two DU executive council members, three academic council members, DUTA vice president and joint secretary, and a member of the university’s finance committee.

East Delhi RO issues notice to Sisodia over tweet on Atishi New Delhi, May 7 (PTI): Poll authorities in Delhi Tuesday issued a show-cause notice to AAP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia over an alleged violation of model code of conduct in connection with his recent tweet, and asked him to give a response by Wednesday evening. The notice has been issued by East Delhi Returning Officer K Mahesh on the basis of a complaint lodged on April 28 by the BJP Delhi unit. On April 27, Sisodia had tweeted in support of AAP East Delhi candidate Atishi and hit out at her detractors who had raised controversy over her last name and religion.

In a tweet in Hindi, the deputy chief minister had alleged that both the BJP and the Congress were “spreading lies” about her religion. “... Her full name is Atishi Singh. She is a Rajputani. A full-fledged Chhatrani. A Jhansi ki Rani. Beware. She will win and script history,” Sisodia had tweeted. The tweet “appears to be in violation of Point (I) Annexure-I of the Manual on Mode Code of Conduct..,” the notice read. “Now, therefore, you are directed to furnish your comments on the above matter before the undersigned by 5 PM on May 8, 2019 otherwise it will be presumed that you have nothing to say,” it stated.

Congress leaders meet former CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan with documents of loan waiver

The Congress government is supposed to pay a whopping Rs 48,000 crore to farmers, but out of it, it has paid only Rs 13,000 crore to them so far, the senior BJP leader claimed. “Before the Assembly polls last year, they promised to waive the farm loans in just 10 days after coming to power. The Congress has betrayed the poor farmers,” he alleged. MP Congress spokesman Bhupendra Gupta said his party was waiving farmers’ loans in right earnest and that the work to write off debts was put on hold due to the model code of conduct in force for the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. Chouhan has been accusing the ruling Congress in the state of going back on it promise of waiving farm loans. It is widely perceived by political obser vers that the Congress’ prepoll promise of farm loan waiver helped it to come to power in the state after a gap of 15 years.

Mumbai, May 7 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s utterances on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi seems to have spurred activists from different sectors to make a beeline to campaign against the BJP in the last two rounds of Lok Sabha elections. Maharashtra Trade Unions Joint Action Committee (TUJAC) Convenor Vishwas Utagi said he will go to campaign in Delhi and some urban centres in Punjab to bring awareness among the people on various issues. “It was the strong foundation laid by the late Rajiv Gandhi that the public sector and private sector flourished and the country could achieve an excellent GDP during the tenure of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. We shall highlight these things to challenge Modi’s fake campaign and insult to a martyr like Rajiv,” Utagi told IANS. Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) chief Raju Shetti will campaign in 8-10 constituencies in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, mainly in the farmer belts. “I have been asked by those states’ farmers groups to campaign so that we can give a tough

They are not at all serious about Ram mandir,” he said. “If they were serious, why did they not raise it in 2014 or 2015 on 2016 or 2017?” The Congress leader said the BJP “forgot” about Ram temple “all these years and just before elections, they wanted to raise it. Why? Because they want to use it always. This promise they have made to the country for the last 30 years. But they have never been able to

fulfil this”. Asking why the BJP has not been fulfiling its promise of building a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said: “Because they are not serious about it. They want to keep this matter alive to use it every time for elections. They are not serious about this, forget about everyone else.” On March 8, a fivejudge bench of the Supreme Court ordered a court-monitored mediation in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case to arrive at a “permanent solution” to the issue. It appointed a committee of three mediators, headed by retired Justice F.M. Kallifulla, to undertake mediation in Faizabad. Abe wants to meet Kim without conditions Tokyo, May 7 (IANS): Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un without conditions to resolve mutual mistrust and sort out ongoing bilateral issues, a government spokesperson said on Tuesday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that Abe has discussed the possibility of meeting Kim “unconditionally”, which showed the Prime Minister’s “clear determination” to hold a summit to resolve issues of primary interest for Japan. Abe had earlier signalled the shift in Japan’s position in an interview with local newspaper Sankei, published on May 2. Suga explained the reason behind Abe changing his stand as the Prime Minister had so far rejected the possibility of a dialogue with the North Korean leader. The official said the only way to “break the current mutual distrust” was for Abe to hold unconditional talks with Kim, Efe news reported. K Y M C

Investigators from eight countries, including the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and Interpol, are helping Sri Lanka with the investigation. In focus are whether the plotters had any foreign help, the sources of funding and if the bombers had any credible link to ISIS. All indications pointed to ISIS involvement, President Maithripala Sirisena told Reuters over the weekend. Tight security across Sri Lanka has seen the military presence stepped up around government establishments, major hotels, schools and religious sites. Attendance at state schools, which reopened on a staggered basis on Monday, was low and hotels were hurt by large cancellations. Official data showed tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka tumbled 7.5 percent in April from a year ago, as travellers stayed away after the bombings.

Port Moresby, May 7 (AFP): A powerful but deep 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, officials said, cutting power and knocking items off shelves though there were no immediate reports of serious damage. The quake struck at a depth of 127 kilometers (80 miles) about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the town of Bulolo at 2119 GMT Monday according to the US Geological Survey, and was felt in the capital Port Moresby about 250 kilometres away. Officials said there were no immediate reports of major damage and the depth of the tremor meant there was no tsunami threat. “We have no reports as yet” of serious damage, Inspector Leo Kaikas, Bulolo police station commander, told AFP. “We are still assessing the situation,” he said. Staff at Bulolo’s Pine Lodge hotel said there was very minor damage from objects falling off tables, but nothing more serious. Residents in Lae, more than 100 kilometres away,

The faithful were allowed into a section of the church to pray before a statue of Saint Anthony, said Father Edmond Tilakaratne, spokesman for the Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith. “The church was partially opened today under very tight security,” Tilakaratne told AFP. “Renovations are already under way.” He said pilgrims will be allowed into the special area of the church for a 12-hour period. MEXICO CITY, May 7 (Agencies): A plane crash in a remote mountain region in northern Mexico claimed the lives of all 13 people on board, including a family of five that were flying back from watching a boxing match in Las Vegas, authorities and local media said on Monday. The wreckage of the plane that took off from Las Vegas on Sunday was found via aerial surveillance in the northern municipality of Ocampo, the government of Coahuila state said in a statement.

tical miles from the northern Mexican city of Monclova. Expressing its condolences to the victims, the company said it had been in touch with Canada’s transportation safety board and would work with the investigating authorities. Alvarez was saddened to hear of the crash. “I deeply lament the terrible accident of the plane coming from Vegas,” he wrote on Twitter on Monday. “I’m deeply grateful for the support of all the people who travel to see my fights. My prayers are with their families.” Mexico’s civil aviation authority said the aircraft departed Las Vegas shortly before 3 p.m. local time. Nearly two hours later, Monterrey lost track of the jet and was unable to make contact with pilots, it said in a statement. Mexican broadcaster Televisa said that the pilot had intended to descend to avoid a storm. Francisco Martinez, an emergency services official in Coahuila, told Milenio recent adverse weather conditions would form part of the investigation into the crash. However, he stopped short of saying weather had caused it.

C O LO M B O, M ay 7 (Agencies): Investigators have dismantled a major part of the network linked to Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday bombings, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Tuesday, but warned the chance of further ISIS terrorist attacks could not be ruled out. Wickremesinghe said the government, which has made major strides in capturing the plotters linked to the April 21 bombings that killed more than 250 people, including 42 foreigners, plans to introduce a new anti-terrorism law. “We have taken measures to normalise the situation,” he told parliament. “But we should keep in mind that the threat has not been completely neutralised because it is an issue of global terrorism.” Investigators are still tracking down 10 more key players associated with plotting the bombings, a military source told Reuters on Tuesday. “The investigations show there were another 8 to 10 people who attended meetings with the other plotters,” the source said. "In my photographs, these threatened trees and demolished houses are still trying to co-exist," said the artist for whom Delhi's redevelopment means loss of a quality of life that was full of trees, birds, cleaner air, and a gentler pace of living. "In our cities, faced with critical levels of air pollution and severe depletion of groundwater, the only smart city planning is to integrate old standing trees into our project designs. To cut trees and compensate by planting saplings elsewhere, or to

transplant the trees into alien soil where they slowly die, is no solution." There are no people in the photographs to mirror the absence of people from the planning processes and decision making, said Saklani. The ruined houses and trees glowing in evening light create a surreal effect, framed in old broken window frames of the kind used in government housing. We will be insulting our people by doing so. It should not be done like that.” A ve r s e f r o m t h e Bhagavad Gita being quoted by the on-screen terrorist became another point of contention for many. According to Gupta, there’s a context to it. “One has to look at it with the context. One should not look at things in isolation. It is not something which is cooked up. It is something which came in research and there is a context in the film. “So, one has to see that point of view in the film. There is even a befitting reply to it which one will see in the film and understand it,” said the filmmaker, who has earlier helmed films like “Aamir”, “Raid” and “No One Killed Jessica”. Said to be inspired by true events, “India’s Most Wanted” unfolds the story of a mission that resulted in the capture of the country’s most wanted terrorist, without firing a single bullet. Milan, May 7 (Agencies): AC Milan revived their Champions League hopes with a 2-1 win over Bologna on Monday as tempers flared with three players sent off and a bust-up between French midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and coach Gennaro Gattuso on the sidelines. Gattuso’s side move back into fifth place - three points behind Atalanta who occupy the final Champions League berth - with three games left to play this season. Milan had dropped out of the European places after a draw against Parma and loss to Torino but now move level on points with Roma who are sixth. Champions Juventus and second-placed Napoli are already assured of Champions League football

next season but the battle for the final two berths remains tight with Inter Milan on 63 points, followed by Atalanta (62), AC Milan (59), Roma (59) and Torino (57). Spanish winger Suso opened for Milan on 37 minutes with the game springing to life in the second half with Fabio Borini tapping in the second on 67 minutes. Bologna’s Mattia Destro pulled one back on 72 minutes, with Milan playing the final quarter of an hour a man down after midfielder Lucas Paquetá was sent off for arguing with the referee. In a nervy finale Bologna finished the game with nine men with Nicola Sansone and Mitchell Dijks both sent off late. There was also pitchside drama early when Ar-

gentine midfielder Lucas Biglia picked up an injury 25 minutes into the game at the San Siro with the Milan coach asking on-loan Chelsea player Bakayoko to start warming up. Bakayoko - on the bench after arriving late for training - started to warm up without enthusiasm to the fury of Gattuso who instead asked another substitute José Mauri to come on. Gattuso and Bakayoko were caught on camera exchanging insults with the French player saying twice “F*** off, man” and the coach replying “I’ll see you later”. Bakayoko joined the club on loan from Chelsea last summer with an option to buy but has been the subject of racist chanting this season several times notably from Lazio supporters.

L o n d o n, M ay 7 (Agencies): Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham can progress to the Champions League final if they play with bravery and a winning mentality against Ajax. Spurs travel to Amsterdam on Wednesday looking to overturn last week’s 1-0 first-leg deficit and book a first ever European Cup final appearance. T h e y m ay r e q u i r e something special against the Dutch side, who have beaten Real Madrid and Juventus in previous rounds, but that is something Pochettino knows all about from his playing days in South America. Pochettino was disappointed with Tottenham’’s display in the opening 30 minutes of the first leg against Ajax last week, before a more direct and physical approach showed that the Dutch side can be got at. And he believes progression is possible if Spurs replicate the type of bravery his Newell’s team showed 27 years ago. “It’s possible if you play bravely and play with a winning mentality,” he said. “That is the most important thing. I think you, the fans, mostly the players - we feel all disappointed because we didn’t start the game, playing a semi-final of the Champions League.” “We didn’t translate the emotion or the image that we were playing in a Champions League semifinal. That is why we feel very, very disappointed after the first leg.”

Atletico captain Godin to leave club M a d r i d, M a y 7 (Agencies): Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin is leaving the club after nine years when his contract expires in June, the Uruguayan defender said at a news conference on Tuesday. Godin, 33, has played 387 times for Atletico since joining from Villarreal in 2010, scoring 27 goals - including famously clinching the club’s first La Liga title in 18 years with a header in a 1-1 draw at Barcelona in 2014. Godin did not say where he is going, but numerous Spanish media have reported that he is on his way to Italian Serie A club Inter Milan. He is the club’s longest-serving player, and its latest high profile servant to leave after Fernando Torres and former captain Gabi Fernandez departed last year. Godin’s departure will leave another hole in Atletico’s defence, with France international Lucas Hernandez already agreeing to join Bayern Munich in June after they paid his 80 million euro release clause. “I’m a little nervous, much more than I am before a game, but I have called everyone here to inform you that these are my final days at the club,” Godin said. “It feels painful to say goodbye, but I leave with my head held

Godin also said he had turned down offers from other clubs to leave Atletico last year. “I received offers, of course I did, but I decided to stay and I have no regrets about that. Murray given Queen’s wildcard

L o n d o n, M ay 7 (Agencies): A wildcard has been reserved for former world number one Andy Murray to play at the Queen’s Club Championships in June but the Scot has been given time to confirm his participation, organisers said on Tuesday. Murray, a three-times Grand Slam champion, has not played competitively since his first round exit at the Australian Open in January. He has since undergone hip resurfacing surgery. The 31-year-old said last month he was pain-free but under no pressure to return and that he would attempt to make a comeback only if his body allowed it. “A wildcard is being held for five-time champion Andy Murray, who will confirm closer to the time if he’s fit enough to compete,” organisers said in a statement here. The tournament’s main draw begins on June 17. The Queen’s Club Championships, where Murray last won the title in 2016, has traditionally been a warm-up tournament for Wimbledon. Also in the field are defending champion Marin Cilic, 2018 Wimbledon runner-up Kevin Anderson, Juan Martin del Potro, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Stan Wawrinka and Nick Kyrgios.

one left-hander was at the crease. In the end, the difference was created by the three Mumbai Indians spinners Rahul Chahar (2/14 in 4 overs), Krunal Pandya (1/21 in 4 overs) and Jayant Yadav (1/25 in 3 overs), who gave away only 60 runs in the 11 overs between them taking four wickets. Earlier, Dhoni failed to launch a brutal assault on a sluggish pitch but did enough in company of Ambati Rayudu to propel Chennai Super Kings to 131 for 4, which was more than a fighting total in testing conditions. The CSK total was built largely on a fifth wicket stand of 66 off 48 balls between Dhoni (37 no off 29 balls) and Rayudu (42 no off 37 balls) when other batsmen found going tough. Dhoni smashed Lasith Malinga for two huge sixes in the penultimate over to provide impetus to the CSK innings, which was stymied by the MI bowlers, especially the spinners. MI leg-spinner Rahul continued his impressive season, with a superb spell, keeping the batsmen on a leash with turn and bounce. CSK didn’t get off to a good start, losing three wickets in the Powerplay, as MI skipper Rohit Sharma used five different bowlers in the first five overs. The visiting team kept things under control in the Powerplay, restricting CSK to 32 runs while picking up three wickets. At the halfway stage, CSK barely managed to reach 50, which was a sign of their struggles. Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings - 131/4 (Ambati Rayudu 42*, MS Dhoni 37*; Rahul Chahar 2/14) Mumbai Indians – 132/4 (Suryakumar Yadav 71*, Ishan Kishan 28; Imran Tahir 2/33)

L o n d o n , M ay 7 (Agencies): Vincent Kompany saved Manchester City with a spectacular long-range goal to beat Leicester City 1-0 and put his side on the brink of the Premier League title. Knowing that any dropped points would hand the advantage in the title race to Liverpool ahead of the final matchday, City put in a nervy performance against an excellent Leicester outfit. But just when it mattered, up stepped City captain Vincent Kompany to smash a stunning strike into the top corner from long range to win it for his team and leave them needing a win on the final day to complete a remarkable title defence. “I always felt like today I was going to do something,” Kompany told Sky Sports afterwards. “Everyone was telling me not to shoot, and I could really hear it. I was tired of hearing it! I’ve scored goals like that it training. It’s 15 years in top-level football of players telling me to play it wide. I always said that one day I would take a shot and it would go in and they would all be happy, and today it happened.” It is the 32nd time this season that the Premier

Ishan Kishan (28, 31 balls) traded their natural flair for caution adding 80 runs that set the platform. While Imran Tahir (2/33 in 4 overs) dismissed Kishan and Krunal Pandya (0) off successive deliveries in the 14th over, it was more of a minor scare as Surya anchored the chase with ease in Hardik Pandya’s company. The best part about Surya’s batting was how late he played both Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja (0/18 in 4 overs) whenever they got the ball to turn away from the right-hander, playing it past the short thirdman fielder. The best part was not taking undue risks against Jadeja, who looked menacing on this track. When Tahir flighted, he would whip him through mid-wicket. Deepak Chahar after getting Rohit’s wicket erred in line and proved to be costly. Harbhajan Singh (1/25 in 4 overs) finished his quota primarily when at least

Halep, Kvitova advance at Madrid Open

Simona Halep

Madrid, May 7 (Agencies): Johanna Konta was unable to capitalise on a fine start as she fell to a secondround loss to third seed Simona Halep at the Mutua Madrid Open. The British number one is having by far her best season on clay and reached the final of the WTA Tour event in Rabat last week before dashing to the Spanish capital and defeating Alison Riske in round one. The heavy schedule looked like it might well have caught up with her as, after playing a fine opening set that she came close to winning, Konta fell away dramatically to go down 7-5 6-1. Konta has only ever beaten one top-10 player on clay but she played a superb first six games and had a chance to lead 5-2. She could not take it and Halep, the champion here in 2016 and 2017, fought back to level before forcing two set points at 5-4. Konta saved those but then missed more opportunities

to lead 6-5 and Halep eventually converted her fifth set point. The world number three put her foot down at the start of the second set and Konta won just two points in the first four games. She dug in to at least get on the board but could not stall Halep’s momentum as the Romanian clinched victory in an hour and 28 minutes. Meanwhile, holder Petra Kvitova blunted a late attack from France’s Kristina Mladenovic to advance 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) into the third round. The Czech second seed, chasing a fourth title on the Caja Magica clay, has now won her last five matches over qualifier Mladenovic in straight sets. “It was a pretty difficult match. I fought hard in the end and that’s what counts,” the winner said, “The clay conditions here are a bit different compared to other venues, so I needed time to fight it out.” Kvitova took the open-

Manchester City on brink of EPL title

C h e n n a i , M ay 7 (PTI): The enormously talented Suryakumar Yadav played one of his finest knocks on a challenging track as Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the first Qualifier, entering IPL final for the fifth time on Tuesday. On a sluggish pitch, Suryakumar scored an unbeaten 71 off 54 balls with MI reaching the target in 18.3 overs. However CSK will get another chance to make it to their eighth summit clash as they will now play the second Qualifier against the winner of the ‘Eliminator’ between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The target of 132 wasn’t a big one but once the below-par Chepauk pitch was factored in, the chasing team had its own set of challenges. With senior players Rohit Sharma (4) and Quinton de Kock (8) returning quickly, Surya and

Dublin, May 7 (IANS): Chris Gayle has been named as the vice captain of West Indies for the upcoming World Cup slated to be held in England and Wales from May 30. Gayle, a former captain who last led West Indies in ODIs in June 2010, will be the deputy for Jason Holder in what is set to be his final ODI tournament. “It is always an honour to represent the West Indies in any format and this World Cup for me is special. As a senior player it is my responsibility to support the captain and everyone else in the team,” Gayle said. “This will probably be the biggest World Cup, so there will be great expectations and I know we will do very well for the people of the West Indies,” he added. A veteran of 289 ODIs, Gayle is not a part of the West Indies team currently playing tri-nation series in Ireland. Meanwhile, Shai Hope, who made a career-best 170 and added a record opening stand of 365 with John Campbell in the opening game against Ireland on Sunday, has been named as the vice captain for the ongoing series. “It’s a tremendous honour to be appointed vice captain for this series here in Ireland. Ahead of this tournament I was asked to take on this role and I was happy to accept,” Hope said. West Indies will open their World Cup campaign against Pakistan at Trent Bridge on May 31.

Vincent Kompany celebrates with Manchester City team-mates after scoring a goal during their Premier League match against Leicester City.

League lead has changed hands, but City’s 13th win on the bounce didn’t look like arriving against a wellorganised Leicester side. Brendan Rodgers, who missed out on the title with Liverpool in 2014, frustrated Pep Guardiola with his players producing a disciplined display with City unable to create too many chances barring Kompany’s thunderbolt. In the first half, Ser-

gio Aguero’s header from Ilkay Gundogan’s corner was brilliantly kept out by Schmeichel at his near post via the crossbar, with replays showing the ball had not crossed the line, and Leicester posed a threat on the break as James Maddison watched his shot curl a yard wide of the post. But just when the home crowd were beginning to feel resigned to their fate, with anger directed to-

wards referee Mike Dean, up stepped Kompany to crash in City’s 100th home goal of the season as the Etihad erupted. City will retain the title if they beat Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, but a failure to secure a 14th successive league win could open the door to Liverpool to snatch a first domestic crown in 29 years with a win over Wolves at Anfield.

Woods receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

Washington, May 7 (IANS): US President Donald Trump conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom on ace golfer Tiger Woods in a ceremony in the Rose Garden of the White House. “ Yo u r s p e c t a c u l a r achievements on the golf course, your triumph over physical adversity and your relentless will to win, win, win - these qualities embody the American spirit,” Trump said on Monday evening as he bestowed the nation’s highest civilian honour on Woods, 43. The California native is number two in the number of major tournament victories, Efe news reported.

The distinction comes after Woods won his fifth Masters Tournament, marking a return to form after 10 years marred by scandal, a succession of injuries and addiction to pain-killers. “This has been an unbelievable experience and... everyone here has seen and been with me for them, some of you for my entire life, and some of you for more than half my life,” Woods said to a group that included many members of his family. “You’ve seen the good and the bad, the highs and the lows and I would not be in this position without your help,” he said. ing Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Charlie Sifford. The original executive order that created the award, issued by John F. Kennedy

in 1963, says the Presidential Medal of Freedom is meant for people who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the

security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavours”. Trump, himself a golf enthusiast, has long been friendly with Woods, who is designing a golf course for a club in Dubai that is managed by the Trump Organization. There is a villa named for Woods at Trump’s golf club in Doral, Florida. “He’s also a great person. He’s a great guy,” the president said after conferring he medal on Woods. Last month, Trump signaled his intention to give Woods the award following the Masters triumph.

ing set on a break and started the second set with another, But Mladenovic broke back for 3-all and eventually forced the contest to a tiebreaker, which Kvitova captured.

“I had to fight, but I’m glad that I had this (kind of) match. Hopefully, it’s given me a bit more freedom for the next round,” last month’s Stuttgart clay winner said.

Djokovic cruises past Fritz Launching his quest for a third Madrid title, Djokovic dismissed American qualifier Taylor Fritz, 6-4, 6-2, to roll into the Madrid round of 16. The top seed tore through 12 straight points on serve to start. Staying in step with the former French Open champion through six games, Fritz battled bright sun and sharp Djokovic returns—and won neither test—in the seventh game. Squinting into the sun, Fritz scattered a few errors as Djokovic converted the first break point of the match. Switching sides, the Serbian faced his own sun sight issues, but withstood the glare and a break point holding for 5-3 when Fritz sailed a forehand beyond the baseline. Spinning successive shots into the American’s backhand corner, Djokovic served out the 37-minute opener at 30. Still, Djokovic’s shot-tolerance is greater than the 21-year-old American and he was more incisive opening the court with angles today. The Australian Open champion’s smooth movement and sharp-angled returns earned him the first break of the second set for 2-1. That break was part of a five-game charge that saw Djokovic take complete command. The world No. 1 won 16 of the last 18 points played on his serve wrapping up a 65-minute triumph to improve to 25-8 lifetime in Madrid.
