KOHIMA, MAY 7 (NPN): All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, Dr. K. Jayakumar reiterated that no one can take away from Nagas their spirit of freedom in practising their own religious beliefs and that BJP will never succeed in its efforts to stamp Hindutva in any form. Dr. Jayakumar said this in an exclusive interview to this Correspondent here in Kohima after arrival from Dimapur at Hotel Ura. Attacking BJP for its agenda he said rise in attacks on religious minorities like killings and burning of churches have revealed the core agenda of the BJP, when asked if the BJP can be a major player within DAN in the 2018 election. He warned that if BJP did well in Nagaland even to the point of coming near majority in the 2018 assembly elections, then it will be a big setback for democratic freedom. Dr. Jayakumar questioned how under the Indian constitution can the BJP impose hurdles on minority religions by making official

programme on religious days as ‘Good Governance Day’ on December 25, the birth of Jesus Chris? He asked why did the BJP government not declare Good Governance Day on “Ganpati day” or “Maha Shivaratri Day? He said BJP was committing fraud on the people: “it’s a religious fraud and this will boomerang” he added. Dr. Jayakumar said the BJP has been fooling the Nagas with the Accord signed in 2015 which no one knows what it was all about. He said Nagas were being thoroughly fooled by BJP under the Naga Accord. He said since assembly election was approaching Nagas should seriously ponder over whether the accord was acceptable or not and since the signatories have not spelt out what the con-
tents were. By refusing to tell Nagas what the framework agreement was all about, Dr. Jayakumar said the Nagas were being taken for a ride. He disclosed that with former chief minister and MP Neiphiu Rio soon going to float another party; there will be nothing left of NPF. He said NPF is currently “vertically divided between NPF (left) and NPF(right)”. Under such situation, Dr. Jayakumar claimed that the Congress will be the main player in Nagaland. When asked how Congress would face election in 2018 with a fractionised set up, where there were no followers but only leaders or like an army with generals but not soldiers; Dr. Jayakumar said the party will do well and better than in 2013 general elections, Congress will not get the vote Congress polled last time in 2013. The secretary admitted that the fallout of Congress in Nagaland was due to local issues, ragionalistic feelings, wrong philosophies propagated and also conceded that the previous Congress government in the state could have done much better. To queries on the outcome of Meghalaya and
Mizoram ruled by Congress governments can sustain when the party was routed in Assam and surrendered in Arunachal and Manipur: Dr. Jayakumar said the Congress governments in Meghalaya and Mizoram were still strong and exuded confidence that the people will choose Congress which was a tried and tested party and would not vote for BJP in those states including Nagaland. He admitted that BJP will leave no stone unturned to capture power through any means in these states but in Nagaland he was optimistic that BJP will drawn a blank. Dr. Jayakumar also accepted that like in Arunachal and Manipur, politicians in the north east will continue switch from one party to the other for power. He said the Congress in Nagaland was being revamped in preparation for the 2018 elections where the party will contest all 60 assembly seats. With this in mind, Dr. Jayakumar said he has come to Nagaland on a ten-day tour of all districts to identify candidates for the constituencies by setting up district Congress committees and motivate the people to select the right candidates.
Kejriwal accused of taking `2 crore bribe
What Kapil Mishra claims: I saw Satyendra Jain give Rs. 2 crore in cash to Kejriwal. When I asked Kejriwal where did the money come from, he said he will talk about it at the right time
NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (AGENCIES): Sacked Delhi minister Kapil Mishra on Sunday accused chief minister Arvind Kejriwal of accepting a bribe of Rs2 crore at the latter’s official residence. Elaborating his accusations, Mishra told reporters during a press conference that he had witnessed Delhi’s health minister Satyendra Jain giving the cash to Kejriwal. Mishra claimed he has informed about the transfer of cash to the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal earlier on Sunday and that he was ready to assist any investigations into it. This is the first time that a corruption allega-
tion of accepting illegal money has been made directly against Kejriwal. The allegations gain significance given that the incumbent AAP , which Kejriwal leads, came out of an anti-corruption movement and promised a clean and transparent government. “Allegations of corruption had come up during Punjab elections, Delhi government, funding but everyone kept saying that Kejriwal would and never indulge in corruption and that he will act against it. But when I saw it with my eyes that Satyendra Jain gave Rs2 crore in cash to Kejriwal at his residence, I could not
stop myself. When I asked Kejriwal where did the money come from, he said he will talk about it at the right time,” Mishra told reporters outside Delhi’s Raj Ghat. He added that it was ‘human’ to make a mistake but Kejriwal should come out in the open with the truth and people of Delhi have the right to know about it. Making another potentially damaging accusation, Mishra claimed that Jain had told him that he had settled land deals worth Rs50 crore for Kejriwal’s relatives. Mishra also said that he is yet to be formally informed about his sacking as a minister. Earlier in the day senior leaders of AAP held a meeting at Kejriwal’s residence to discuss the current political situation. Meanwhile, opposition parties took the opportunity to lash out at AAP demanding Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation.
No-detention policy in school to be revoked G U WA H AT I , M AY 7 (AGENCIES): Noting the poor quality of education and dropouts in Class IX, the Central government is likely to revoke this month the no-detention policy and allow States to detain a student after giving him or her a fair chance in Class V and VIII. RTE Act makes it mandatory for schools to pass students till Class IX. Union Minister for HRD Prakash Javadekar said that in a recent meeting of education ministers, 25 States had opposed the no-detention policy. “So we have unanimously decided to allow the States to detain students. A Bill has been prepared and it will soon go to the Cabinet, probably this month itself,” the minister said at a two-day regional workshop for NE region held to share innovations and best practices in school education. He said in Class V and VIII, there will be an annual examination in March. If the student fails, he will be given another chance by the school in June after giving the student remedial classes. But schools will have the liberty to detain the student if he fails in this additional exam also. (Cont’d on p-8)

Govt aiming to make NE ‘a gateway for SE Asia’: PM N E W D E L H I / SHILLONG, MAY 7 (PTI): Aiming to make the Northeast a gateway of Southeast Asia, the government has initiated major infrastructure projects in the seven states, including investing Rs 40,000 crore to improve the roads and highways, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today. However, he lamented that “only Gangtok (in the Northeast) had found a place in the first 50 clean cities”, out of the 12 cities from the region surveyed as part of the recent nationwide cleanliness survey. While four Northeastern cities found a place between 100 and 200 clean cities, seven were positioned between 200 and 300, with Shillong being the 276th, he said while stressing that ‘Swachhata’ or cleanliness was a major challenge for everyone in the region. He was addressing the centenary celebrations of the prominent voluntary organisation, Bharat Sevashram Sangha, in Shillong through video conferencing. “We have to make the Northeast a gateway for Southeast Asia,” Modi said,
adding if this gateway is dirty, then the dream would not be fulfilled and asked the people and organisations like the Sangha to join hands in the cleanliness campaign. Observing that there has been no balanced development in the entire Northeastern region even so many years after Independence, Modi said his government “with all its resources” had planned to bring about overall and balanced development of the states here. The Prime Minister said the major thrust would be to improve connectivity and develop the entire region for tourism purposes. “All these initiatives will help to make the Northeast the gateway of Southeast Asia,” he said. While an investment of Rs 40,000 crore is being made to improve the road infrastructure in the Northeast, 19 big railway projects have also been started in the region, he said. “We are also improving the electricity situation in the Northeast and trying to bring even more tourists to the region,” Modi said. Announcing that the Northeast would soon be
connected with UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagarik) scheme, he said small airports were also being developed in the region, while the extension of the runway at Shillong airport has been approved. Bharat Sevashram Sangha is a network of volunteers across the globe engaged in helping people in distress. The Sangha’s social welfare activities include disaster relief, spreading education, providing healthcare facilities, vocational training and upliftment of the tribals. Lauding the role of the Sangha in playing a critical role during natural calamities, the Prime Minister said a myth was created that spirituality and service cannot go together. “Some people tried to tell that those who are in the spiritual path are different from those on the way of providing service to the humanity,” Modi said, adding that the Sangha has proved this wrong through its activities. He said Sangha had more than 100 branches and over 500 units engaged in providing social service in sectors including health, education as well as training the youths.

‘Artificially sweetened sodas lead to infertility’ Govt accepts NTTU’s demand with rider NEW DELHI, MAY 7 (IANS): With sedentary lifestyle being one of the biggest reasons causing infertility, doctors say consumption of artificially sweetened sodas and aerated drinks may also lead to infertility in humans. Aerated drinks contain an artificial sweetener, aspartame, which can disrupt the endocrine system leading to hormonal imbalance and infertility issues in women. “Almost all of the soft drinks and sodas contain aspartame which is linked to many health problems including infertility, malformations and miscarriages,” said Arvind Vaid, an IVF expert at city-based Indira IVF. “Excess consumption leads to hormonal imbalance and fluctuation that causes ovulatory disorders and even worsens PMS (Premenstrual symptoms),” he added. Stating that phenylala-

chances of dying when this is consumed in excess. It is advised by many doctors and experts to avoid anything that helps in the formation of free radicals in the body for the significance of reproductive health,” said Vaid. Rachna Jaiswar, associated with Gynaecology Department of Safdarjung Hospital, said consumption
of sugary aerated drinks restrains the immune system causing weight gain and hormonal imbalance, which strongly contributes to fertility issues. “Soda is a highly acidic beverage, which alters the pH level of the body with excess consumption,” said Jaiswar. Talking about the high consumption of aerated drinks and sodas by men, Jaishwar said due to lack of nutrients in a high pH atmosphere, sperm cells either get harmed leading to its abnormal shape and poor quality or eventually die. “Moreover Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that reduces the male semen quality, is found in the lining of plastic bottles and most canned goods. Men who consume soft drinks more often are at 4 times the risk of lowering their sperm count, motility and concentration,” said Jaiswar.

FIR against BSF for ‘fake encounter’ in M’laya Tura, May 7 (PTI): Residents of a village near Bangladesh border have lodged an FIR against the BSF claiming that Friday’s firing by its personnel to stop “cattle smugglers” was actually a fake encounter. BSF had said in a statement that their men posted at Kachu Adokgre in West Garo Hills district apprehended cattle smugglers, who attacked them along with local people, and they had to fire injuring two persons. Villagers of Belabor, however, contested this version and lodged an FIR demanding action against the BSF personnel involved,
Superintendent of Police Dr MGR Kumar said today. BSF personnel were trying to pass ordinary villagers as cattle smugglers to impress their superiors, said the FIR lodged yesterday. The district SP said, “We are looking into all aspects of the case and an investigation into what really happened is currently on.” The villagers asked how cattle smuggle could take place during daytime in presence of security personnel along the border. The FIR claimed that BSF men came in two vehicles at a spot away from their jurisdiction, questioned one resident of Belabor about
cattle smuggle and let him go at around 9 AM. Then they moved to Kochu Adokgre and found Namseng Ch Sangma, a resident of Belabor village, tending six cattle. They accused him of smuggling the animals to Bangladesh, the FIR said. Villagers reached the spot and an argument ensued as BSF personnel refused to listen to the plea of the local people that the cattle belong to them, it said adding BSF men then fired injuring two persons including Namseng. The injured men, who were shot in the leg and were hospitalised, and two others were arrested.
Honour Assam Accord, says APCC
GUWAHATI, May 7 (Agencies): The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) called on President Pranab Mukherjee and Union home minister Rajnath Singh, seeking the Centre’s intervention in implementing Assam Accord. The APCC delegation, led by its president Ripun Bora and comprising Congress MLAs and MPs, said they requested the President and the home minister to ensure the cut-off date for identifying illegal migrants remains March 25, 1971. Several indigenous organizations have been demanding that the cut-off date be 1951. “We have requested the President.
There will be chaos in Assam if the cut-off date were to be changed. March 25, 1971 has been accepted by everybody and must be retained. The Centre must protect the Assam Accord in the Supreme Court,” Bora told TOI from New Delhi. Bora said that another agenda is to put pressure on the centre to get the NRC update process complete as soon as possible. “The NRC is the only solution to protect the people of the state from the outsiders. The Centre should put up a strong fight in the SC to legalize the panchayat secretary’s certificate in the NRC. Otherwise, more than 40 lakh women would suffer,” he added.

A.K. Antony Thiruvananthapuram, May 7 (IANS): Congress leader A.K. Antony on Sunday said his party will bounce back strongly after the defeats in the February-March assembly elections in five states. “Setbacks are only a temporary phenomenon as the Congress will bounce back very strongly. The need of the hour is to strengthen the Congress at the grassroots level,” Antony said at a party function here. “What one sees in Kerala are only ‘leaders’, while the party strength at the lower levels is weak. That has to change.” He also said the Left government in Kerala, which will complete a year this month, had been an “abject failure on all fronts”. “Every sector in the state has gone haywire and gone down badly,” the former Kerala Chief Minister said. The Congress leader said the time was not far when Kerala’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist will itself hail Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Deeply saddened by controversy around Kejriwal: Hazare Ralegan Siddhi, May 7 (IANS): Social activist Anna Hazare on Sunday said he was deeply saddened by the latest controversy surrounding his former protege and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. “I am deeply saddened by whatever I saw on television,” Hazare told media persons here after sacked Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra said he saw Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain hand over Rs 2 crore to Kejriwal at his Delhi residence. He said he had been fighting corruption for the last 40 years and Kejriwal had joined in his fight against the menace. Hazare had led the 2011 anti-corruption campaign in Delhi to seek introduction of the Jan Lokpal Bill. “It was because of the anticorruption fight in Delhi that Kejriwal became the Chief Minister. And today, when he (Kejriwal) is accused of corruption, I cannot tell how deeply sad that makes me,” Hazare said. The social activist said he will talk in detail after studying the accusation made by Mishra. Mishra, who was sacked on Saturday as minister, said: “Day before yesterday (Friday), I saw Jain hand over Rs 2 crore in cash to Kejriwal. When I asked about the money, Kejriwal refused to answer.”

Snake and ladders
P
olitical development in Manipur followed along expected lines after the BJP(which won 21 seats) overcame the Ibobi-led Congress( which won 28 seats) to capture power with the help of two legislators-one from TMC and an independent- after the NPF (four MLAs) and NPP(four MLAs) ensured the BJP within striking range of power in the recently concluded election. Present BJP chief minister N. Biren Singh had joined BJP from the Congress in October 2016 on the eve of the 2017 election. He had been a prominent Congress cabinet minister since 2003. He had reportedly fully backed the controversial bill in the Manipur assembly on 2015. The Congress, which won 28 seats in the elections, is now down to 22 after the four MLAs joined the BJP. Two others had quit the party earlier. Since over a decade Manipur had been experiencing turmoil and was also described as a failed state because the entire government system had been seriously compromised to the extent that the writ of the government does not run except through use of armed police or security force. Manipur has truly been reduced to a state of anarchy over the years and its people directing their ire at their own government even as more than 20 armed outfits continue to pose serious hurdles for the rule of law. With the lifting of the road blockade in March this year which was imposed since November 2016 by the United Naga Council (UNC) ; the misunderstanding between the hill tribes and the valley community has for the time being, undergone cessation of hostility. The NPF is one of the partners of the BJP in Manipur and it became easier for Biren Singh to negotiate an end to the bandh which was impossible during Ibobi’s term owing to the creation of seven new district in December 2016 by Ibobi. The issue has yet to be resolved as it is in suspension but a time will come when the district creation issue could resurge. The BJP government at the Centre is currently engage in exterminating the Congress from the national political map but cannot ignore these issues. Huge sums of money has been pumped into Manipur and Biren Singh has been disbursing them like largesse after all, what’s a few hundred crore rupees to keep things under control. The best option for the state would be to hold people-to-people dialogue in a spirit that was best exemplified by veteran Naga leader of Manipur Rishang Keishing, who was the longest serving chief minister (1980 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1997) and also holds the distinction of having been the oldest serving parliamentarian in the world, after his term in the Rajya Sabha ended April 9, 2014. Keishing who will turn 97 on October 20, 2017 hails from Bungpa village, Ukhrul District, Manipur. It is a tribute to his political acumen, that though a Naga, yet he continued to rule as chief minister of a state having a majority of non-Naga Meitei community. One of Keishing’s enduring political principle that saw him in good stead was how he defined himself. Keishing had clearly proclaimed his adept manoeuvring political lexicon with these words: “I am an Indian by nationality; a Naga by birth and a Manipuri by citizenship.” Nagas of Manipur may or may not agree on this but ultimately, they will have to contend on the changed scenario.
DailyDevotion Building For Eternity Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it… —Luke 14:28 Our Lord was not referring here to a cost which we have to count, but to a cost which He has already counted. The cost was those thirty years in Nazareth, those three years of popularity, scandal, and hatred, the unfathomable agony He experienced in Gethsemane, and the assault upon Him at Calvary— the central point upon which all of time and eternity turn. Jesus Christ has counted the cost. In the final analysis, people are not going to laugh at Him and say, “This man began to build and was not able to finish” (Luke 14:30). The conditions of discipleship given to us by our Lord in verses 26, 27, and 33 mean that the men and women He is going to use in His mighty building enterprises are those in whom He has done everything. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also,he cannot be My disciple ” (Luke 14:26). This verse teaches us that the only men and women our Lord will use in His building enterprises are those who love Him personally, passionately, and with great devotion— those who have a love for Him that goes far beyond any of the closest relationships on earth. The conditions are strict, but they are glorious. All that we build is going to be inspected by God. When God inspects us with His searching and refining fire, will He detect that we have built enterprises of our own on the foundation of Jesus? (see 1 Corinthians 3:10-15). We are living in a time of tremendous enterprises, a time when we are trying to work for God, and that is where the trap is. Profoundly speaking, we can never work for God. Jesus, as the Master Builder, takes us over so that He may direct and control us completely for His enterprises andHis building plans; and no one has any right to demand where he will be put to work.

Swachha Bharat is a wider concept
Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 151 Dimapur, monday, May 8, 2017
Nagaland Post, Dimapur
I
ndia is one of the fastest growing markets. Low data tariffs are pushing smart TVs. Asian Development Bank has predicted higher 7.2 to 7.6 per cent growth. These are good news amid the spiraling sensex, which crossed the 30,000 mark. Well, many say that the stock market is overheated, stocks over valued and one needs to invest with caution. Indian economy is having resilience gradually. Despite large almost Rs 12 lakh crore NPAs of public sector and large private banks, it needs to do away with impediments. The ADB president Takehiko Naka finds India on a better plain with GST and new bankruptcy law but he softly says it has to go beyond China and wants a further smoothening process. The recent International Monetary Fund is equally jubilant but sees that India has yet to come up with some more steps. It is, of course, a never ending process. India has become more business friendly with many steps but its untamed high cost of private education is a problem. The Swachh Bharat of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a unique awareness for cleanliness. But except New Delhi Municipal Corporation in the national capital region (NCR) none has really got the honours to be clean in the latest survey. The survey carried out by the Quality Council of India did spot assessment of 17,500 location in 434 cities. It sadly found that all townships around NCR are not clean, neither Ghaziabad nor Noida nor Gurugram. They scored the lowest scores. Incidentally, Varanasi, prime minister’s constituency, is the lone city from UP to figure in the top 100 cleanest cities followed by Aligarh at a distant 145th rank and Jhansi at 166th rank. Gonda in UP was adjudged the dirtiest city in the country and was ranked 434th in the list. UP has 25 cities in the bottom of the list. Meerut, near Delhi, also in NCR, is the fifth dirtiest city. The centre allocated Rs 20,000 crore in the 2017 budget for the mission but considering the population, volume of garbage, required effort and manpower, it is not adequate. The figure is much higher than previous years but
a country that has not cared for the cleanliness for long needs more, not easy to find in resource-hit country. Though international agencies avoid direct comment on the sensitive issue while reckoning it for overall business destination, it weighs against. Are Shivaji there ways to solve it? Even in the dirtiest Gonda, there are localities which stand in contrast. To say that things are too bad is not the solution. The non-clean surroundings affect mood, movement and generation of business and other related activities. While clean roads are reckoned in, bad roads are not talked about. In the NCR, there is culture of digging roads, even the arterial ones, only after a road is constructed – an age-old problem. The Swachh Bharat mission has to take note of it. Unless the roads are smooth, without potholes and dug up areas, which are too common, the mission’s success will remain limited. Roads and their maintenance are keys to the mission. It is just not the sanitary staff or avail-
ability of water that cleans up the roads. The Swachh Bharat has to include the city and rural roads, lanes, walkways as the foundation to achieve the goals. The road planning, signals and easy movements are also part of the mission. Slow roads as it is all over Sarkar in NCR and many other places across the county are the biggest impediments. So is expensive education. The culture of expensive schools is impoverishing many parents. Some pay fees that are almost equal to ones’ earnings. It also affects productivity and quality of education. The nation has yet not been able to find a replacement for the expensive system. An affordable, that certainly means inexpensive, schooling would change the economic scenario. The foreign investors loathe coming to India with their families as they feel it would affect the education of their children. Expecting all of them to be able to pay high extortive fees is not only unethical, it is impractical too. The country is in a limbo when it comes to free education from the clutches of high-end ex-
ploiters. No less is the problem of so-called private super specialty hospitals. The government has launched programmes to bring down the prices of stents and other medical aid. But somewhere the nation has not been able solve the problem of health care that has become too expensive and unaffordable. The culture of health insurance does not suit even small population. The government estimates 57 crore people eligible for health insurance. Of them, the total insured are not more than 5 crore. Better and easier health care is being mulled but accessing it is not easy. India’s rapid growth has been accompanied by increasing spatial disparities within India. India’s megacities have continued to grow, fed by a steady stream of migrants from the countryside. The spatial evolution of India has continued to favour districts with high levels of employment density. This is especially the case in services. The evidence in manufacturing is more mixed. In the services sector, agglomeration forces still dominate dispersion forces in high-density ar-
eas. In other words, these high-density clusters of economic activity continue to be India’s engines of growth. That is the problem too. Since activities are high in these areas, migration also remains very high leading to further congestion. Though the areas remain centre of activity, these become less attractive to visitors. These also have to be decongested in a planned manner. It is easier said than done as cost involved is too high. A solution, however, has to be worked out. Swachh Bharat thus is a wider concept than so far what the nation has perceived. It is just not cleaning the cities. The concept is wedded to having a better environment in every sphere of life. The target is just not the individual but a holistic system that could give fillip to the economy and overall development of the nation. The make in India, self sufficiency, global supremacy, good health and environ are all linked up. India’s fast development can become faster and all inclusive with a little care, which this dispensation in the eyes of the people is capable of.
Post-mortem
Few suggestions to improve Kohima town
M
aybe Naga’s have forgotten to appreciate the good work in this generation. Nagas may have now adopted their nature in criticism enabling them in forgetting the way to love and appreciate each other. It is a long desire since a yearlong to express my appreciation to K.C Angami for his good work that he has done in renovation of National Highway 2 from TCP gate to Indira Gandhi stadium, maybe more. I had been closely watching till today and not a single pothole can be seen with a smooth road and clear division road lining. Correct me if I am wrong but I have not seen a single road in Kohima serving without a single pothole for a year or more e.g T.C.P gate to Kisama every hornbill festival black top colouring will be renovated which will hardly survive from November to January almost three months. The capital of Nagaland after 50 years of statehood, roads are horrendous till today. Do we not deserve a good, clean and beautiful road at least in capital town of Nagaland when funds have been flowing every financial year? But even after each financial years the road remains the same, how long we will remain like this, are you tired of this, I feel people like K.C Angami should be awarded more work if he continues to do the same good work even without tendering because tendering work are the worst today. The capital of Nagaland, Kohima town we have so many uncomfortable ways which Govt. and Kohima Municipal council should start to work for improvement of all measures. E.g. in traffic measures and beautification of Kohima town there should be some more improvement like: ( a) Controlling of speed limit specially in town areas, A vehicle should maintain at least 30-40 km/h speed limit so as to avoid unnecessary jam, some vehicles just move at the speed of 10-15 km/h which keep many vehicles behind him in a busy hour. (b) Strict implementation should be made for the turning point, vehicles should not be allowed to take turn from anywhere to avoid the other vehicles keeping in line, in the busy hour (10 am to 11 am ) when we take turns from anywhere at least 10 to 15 are kept in line, the main problem is the commercial taxi, they stop anywhere, take anywhere for e.g in a busy hour if four taxi’s or other vehicles takes turn in between High school road to Razhu Point at least 40 -50 vehicles will be in lines for jam. Now we can see signboard of bus stop, the same should be made for commercial taxi, where people have to walk, to stop and catch a
bus or taxi, some taxi driver are very careless and carefree in driving which traffic should know and control (c). Road division lining should be drawn clearly in his own side especially for the safety of the driving and one of the big below standard town problem is vegetable vendors, Selling their products in the footpath which makes the public more to walk closer to the road which as a result it makes the driver very uncomfortable to drive and more for the public to walk freely on the footpath, footpath should be neatly constructed preferably with high quality tiles for beautification of the town and dust free, vegetable vendors should be allotted with a constructed govt. marketing complex with proper division for meat, vegetable, essential daily needs etc. Zebra crossing line colours is encouraged to be in white and yellow colour, clear indication lining mark on the road is recommended. Public should not be allowed to cross the road from anywhere, this is for the safety as well as crossing road from anywhere is also a cause of traffic jam. Kohima municipal committee together with power and phone companies like bsnl, airtel etc should also do something with light wires and telephone wires. It really spoils the beauty of the town hanging loosely around everywhere for light wires its exceptional but telephone lines should be done away, preferably putting them under the ground should be the best. Govt. P.W.D department should prepare D.P.R of town area roads that the breadth of the road should be to till the end of both sides reaching to the end of the full road is to maintain a dust free environment and give more space for parking and every house owner of the town area should be ordered for plastering concrete floor in front of their building attached with the road for a cleaner Kohima town. Those are some of my few suggestions to improve Kohima town as well as other towns in Nagaland for the citizens and the driver to be safe, clean, hygienic and comfortable lifestyle. Together we should voice out what is good and what is bad, today we have lot of corruption and in my views there are three type of people in Nagaland. One type is the one who always strive for corruption free and the second type are the ones who always do nothing unless they are affected in their business and personal lines of works and the third group of people are who always watch, see, grumble but does nothing and for them “EDMUND BURKE (172997) rightly said” The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. Kenlum Hemang, Kenuozou Colony, Kohima
Kohima to Dimapur road (NH-39)
K
ohima to Dimapur road is one of the most accidental prone areas where countless life was lost and countless property had been damaged. To substantiate about the disastrous journey for a commuters is the lack of common sense while driving. Damaging of vehicle is nothing but losing of life is so precious and regrettable. The impacts in this kind of accident are the traumatic condition faced by love and dear ones of the deceased. This kind of accident is occurred due to careless driving, reckless driving, drunk driving, rash driving, mechanical failure of the vehicles, on road talking with mobile while driving, out of urgency or emergency driving etc. God has given knowledge and wisdom to human beings for invention of the necessities but due to human greed and carelessness often misuses it by losing precious life in the hands of the machine. Yet God always gives us an opportunity for creation of new thing for our needs and requirements. We should be very thankful to modern technology that helps us in every sphere of our life. Forgetting about chopper service currently operating all over Nagaland state operated by NST, before the arrival of vehicles in our land even to travel from Kohima to Dimapur our grandparents in the past days used to walk almost a day by foot. Now we hardly take two hours to travel it.
When we see the road system in Nagaland, in every nook and corner of the state the road is very small and congested with pot holes everywhere and no blacktopping at all except some roads with black topping that connects important places. The accident cases are very less in these areas as compared to the accident taking place in Kohima to Dimapur road despite having enough space for the vehicles to cross from the opposite directions freely. Yet accident takes place daily. Safe and sound journey is important to reach our destinations. Commuters travel the journey for many reasons, be it for appointment, interview, business, weekend holidays, family and friend visiting, weddings, seminars, official duty, sightseeing etc. All these purposes make a reason for our living and without it our life is meaningless. Our ultimate goal in our life is to fulfil the task that lies ahead of us. So in order to fulfil this careful driving is important. Mostly taxi drivers don’t care about the safety of the passengers and they drive recklessly and in nuisance while driving. This has caused major impact leading to accident on the road. They don’t care about their owners’ car. They don’t have sense to drive with honesty, dignity and sincerity. Some drivers feel proud to overtake the vehicles and sadly because of this reason accident takes place. It is high time for the cab owners to educate them
or some NGO’s to take up the matter by giving seminars about the safety of journey and the passengers whose innocent’s life depends on them. In other words educated youth should be employed or an educated unemployed youth in Nagaland should take up the job thus creating employment opportunity. No job is considered filth when we have the conscious of dignity of labour. In Shillong or elsewhere in the world the educated people roll on the streets as a driver by profession with their soft spoken English pleasing all the commuters. It is such an imperative and vital point for us to voice out for change in our society with fair implementation of the programs, quality workmanship and durability especially referring to the current construction of four lane road (Dimapur to Kohima). It is high time for the traffic department to enforce speed decorum while driving in the city or highway. With the current rise of vehicles in our state, hit and run cases is becoming on high alert. To check these menaces proper implementation of strict rules and regulation in necessary. As the saying goes ‘slow and steady wins the race’. Hence while driving always be alert and steady and maintain our speed limitation in order to reach our destination safely thus winning our race and at the same time saving our precious life on earth. Yarangchang Imchen, Lirmen village
Reader’s Post Anything is possible
Sir,
The road leading from Notun Basti Junction towards Duncan Basti was in a pathetic shape for the past one year or so. There was a particular spot just about 50 meter before reaching the Don Bosco School first gate, where there was a big pothole and we had to place one part of the vehicle (Tire) on the road divider that is in the middle of the road and the other tire on the pothole, literally in a half-capsized position where our body also goes through the motion (Half -Capsized Position). It was a sight to behold as all vehicles reaching this particular spot comes to a complete standstill and the vehicles goes through the “ritual” and tactically negotiate the pothole. So just the other day as I was passing through this particular spot with a friend of mine, on reaching the spot, inadvertently I reached for the road divider and began to turn my body, when suddenly my friend alarmed me and shouted at my folly. What I didn’t realise was that someone finally decided to take responsibility and repaired the pothole almost overnight. But the habit I had developed, like most drivers for over a year, got the better of me and I was only going through the “ordeal “. When sanity prevailed, we had a good laugh and concluded that just about anything is possible in Nagaland. Mumbai, May 7 (PTI): The rupee is likely to trade in the 64-64.50 range this week on continuing foreign fund inflows, dollar sale by exporters and higher demand for the American unit from importers, say treasury heads at banks. Market experts say the Reserve Bank, which has been intervening in the market to contain volatility in the rupee, will remain proactive. “Overall the rupee has been strengthening this year due to higher foreign fund inflows due to reforms like GST. But now exporters are also selling dollars on one hand and they are started covering (buying dollars) their position on the other,” FirstRand Bank Treasury Head Harihar Krishnamurthy told PTI.

(Form p-1) He said the HRD Ministry is also going to notify learning outcomes in the RTE Act and they will be implemented from this year itself. Underlining the need to revamp the training modules of teachers, Javadekar said BEd training for teachers would be conducted in government schools and feedback of students will be taken to assess the performance of the trainees. He added that the 10-year-old NCERT books will be revised and feedbacks from the teaching community have been sought to modify, improve and update them. “We are not forming a panel of four/five members this time to revise the books. Through our portal, we have sought suggestions from teachers. They can point to mistakes, add matters, suggest changes,” the minister said. The minister, expressing his concern over the falling standards of education, asserted that quality education is the key to the nation’s progress. Teachers’ accountability, students’ discipline and community participation can change the scenario, he said. He said the Northeast is a special place where people are talented and dedicated, but “there is enough opportunities to improve”.

ministry official said the ministry is likely to come out with “simplified modalities” shortly. Some airline operators have expressed their willingness to induct aircraft with four to six or more seats and have requested subsidy to be provided for them also. So, the ministry might revise the number of subsidised seats on an UDAN flight, the official noted. The official also said a separate round of bidding is likely for helicopters as the ministry is looking at ways to make the scheme “more feasible and attractive for helicopter operators”. The focus is on hilly terrain in the North-East in order to improve air connectivity in that region, she added. Apart from fare cap of Rs 2,500 for one-hour flights, airlines are required to offer 50 per cent of the total seats on an UDAN flight at discounted fares. The number of such seats should be at least nine and should not exceed 40. B e s i d e s, a c a r r i e r would have exclusivity on a particular UDAN route for three years.

The Lok Sabha MP said when he met late Vihienuo recently, it was painful to see that he was too weak speak. Rio recalled that late Vihienuo, despite his ripe age, had a sharp memory and would relate the past incidents and historical events with photographic details. He was always concerned for the people’s welfare, Rio added. “His contributions and sacrifices would be recorded for all time to come and remember him as one of the builders of our nation,” Rio said. In his demise, Rio said it was a personal loss for him and the family as late Vihienuo had contributed for the society even till his last hours. “There is emptiness in all of us as we have lost a person who was a father to us and to many multitudes more.” On behalf of his fam-

after extensive stakeholder consultations,” Mohapatra told in an interview. Noting that draft guidelines will be prepared before the next round of bidding, he said, “It is not necessary that terms and conditions in the first round of bidding would remain the same.” The number of seats reserved for subsidised rates, exclusivity period given for an airline on a particular route, frequency of a particular flight and other aspects of UDAN will be looked into. “...all these questions are open for discussions,” Mohapatra said. After gathering views from the stakeholders, including states and airlines, the draft guidelines will be put up for public comments before finalising the changes. Asked whether there could be changes to the basic structure of UDAN itself, Mohapatra said there “could be”, depending on the suggestions and how realistic these are. The next round of bidding under UDAN is expected in three months. A senior civil aviation
YOKOHAMA, May 7 (Agencies): Finance minister Arun Jaitley has asked the Asian Development Bank to speed up the process of approving and disbursing loans to stay ahead of its peers. He also insisted that the bank should fund projects other than those in the infrastructure space, especially health and education. “For instance, time required to approve a proposal as well as the time lag between approval and disbursement of loans can be further reduced. I am sure you all would agree that speed is what will keep ADB ahead of others,” Jaitley said at the Board of Governors’ meeting of ADB at its ongoing 50th annual conference here. His statement assumes importance in the wake of newer multilateral lending agencies like Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and New Development Bank taking increasing share in the infrastructure lending space. Jaitley suggested the need for ADB to adopt Country Systems quickly rather than being contented with adoption of the Agency System to help reduce delays in the run-up to project approvals.

New Delhi, May 7 (PTI): The government is looking to “refine” the present norms for regional air connectivity scheme as it prepares for the second round of bidding in three months, according to a senior official. While the scheme became operational after the first flight from Shimla to the national capital, the authorities have started the groundwork to comprehensively review its framework, including those relating to the number of seats and exclusivity period for an airline. The ambitious scheme -- UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) -- seeks to connect un-served and under-served airports as well as make flying more affordable for the masses. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said efforts are on to refine the norms for bidding under the scheme. The national airport operator is the nodal agency for UDAN. “(Before) the second round of bidding, we will further refine (the scheme)

Macron, Le Pen face off as France elects prez
Right wing National Front candidate Marine Le Pen casts her ballot in Henin-Beaumont after Femen protesters were cleared from outside the polling station.
Paris, May 7 (Agencies): French voters went to the polls Sunday to pick a new president, choosing between young centrist Emmanuel Macron and farright leader Marine Le Pen in a watershed election for the country and Europe. Polling day follows an unprecedented campaign marked by scandal, repeated surprises and a last-minute hacking attack on Macron, a 39-year-old who has never held elected office. The run-off vote pits the pro-Europe, pro-business Macron against antiimmigration and anti-EU Le Pen, two radically different visions that underline a split in Western democracies. Le Pen, 48, has por-
trayed the ballot as a contest between the “globalists” represented by her rival -those in favour of open trade, immigration and shared sovereignty – versus the “nationalists” who defend strong borders and national identities. Voting began at 0600 GMT in 66,546 polling stations. Most will close at 1700 GMT, except those in big cities which will stay open an hour longer. “The political choice the French people are going to make is clear,” Le Pen said in her opening remarks during an often vicious debate between the pair on Wednesday night. The last polling showed Macron -- winner of last month’s election first round
-- with a widening lead of around 62 per cent to 38 per cent before the hacking revelations on Friday evening. A campaigning blackout entered into force shortly after. Hundreds of thousands of emails and documents stolen from the Macron campaign were dumped online and then spread by anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, leading the candidate to call it an attempt at “democratic destabilisation.” France’s election authority said publishing the documents could be a criminal offence, a warning heeded by traditional media organisations but flouted by Macron’s opponents and far-right activists online. “We knew that there were these risks during the presidential campaign because it happened elsewhere. Nothing will go without a response,” French President Francois Hollande told AFP on Saturday. US intelligence agencies believe state-backed Russian operatives were behind a massive hacking attack on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign ahead of America’s presidential election last November.

US city council votes to support Trump’s impeachment Los Angeles, May 7 (IANS): The Los Angeles City Council on Saturday passed a resolution saying President Donald Trump should be investigated for any high crime or misdemeanour sufficient to warrant impeachment proceedings. It calls for the city’s 2017-18 federal legislative programme to include support for any legislative action to investigate whether Trump violated the Foreign Emoluments Clause of the US Constitution or committed any other high crime or misdemeanour, Los Angeles Daily News reported. Since taking office, Trump has been criticised by ethics experts for not divesting himself of his vast real estate empire, which could be in violation of a provision in the Constitution barring officials from accepting gifts or benefits from foreign leaders or states. “If he is not going to come clean and show the US that his hands are clean of potentially illegal foreign money in investments, then we must demand that Congress use their power to investigate the situation,” said Councilman Bob Blumenfield, who introduced the resolution. “With this resolution, the city of Los Angeles calls on our Congress mem-
bers and senators for the good of the country to investigate Trump’s international finances, and make sure that he is actually working on behalf of the American people and not his own pocketbook.” The resolution passed on a 10-0 vote. Councilman Mitchell Englander, the City Council’s lone Republican, was not present during the vote, although he was in the chamber immediately before and after. Several dozen members from a group called West Valley Resistance were in the audience for the vote and burst out in applause when the resolution passed. Blumenfield credited the group with pushing him to bring the resolution forward, the daily said in its report. In January, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a federal lawsuit against Trump, alleging he was violating the Emoluments Clause. “Diplomats from foreign governments and their agents are staying in Trump hotels, like the Trump hotel in DC,” said Zephyr Teachout, one of the lawyers on the case. “That’s money from foreign governments going into our President’s pocket while he is making decisions that affect those countries.”

Islamabad, May 7 (IANS): Fifty Afghan security personnel were killed and 100 others injured as Pakistani forces retaliated to unprovoked firing in Balochistan’s Chaman area last week, a top official claimed here on Sunday. Major General Nadeem Anjum, Inspector General (IG) of Frontier Corps (FC) - Balochistan, however, said that “we are not happy over their losses since they are our Muslim brothers”, Dawn online reported. The Frontier Corps IG was briefing media persons here over a cross-border attack in Chaman on May 5, in which 12 Pakistani civilians were killed and 40 injured when Afghan border forces opened fire at security personnel guarding a census team, although Kabul was informed of the exercise in advance. The attack caused residents in Killi Luqman, Killi Jahangir and Badshah Adda Kahol to evacuate their homes as Chaman was shut down and security ramped up in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan.
The FC Balochistan chief said four or five check posts were also destroyed when Pakistani border guards retaliated to the cross-border attack. Maj. Gen. Anjum said that on May 5, Afghanistan pleaded for ceasefire, which Pakistan accepted. He said Afghan border forces targeted civilians even though they had been informed about the on-going census exercise. Earlier, Pakistan Army’s Southern Command chief Lt General Aamir Riaz termed the cross-border attack as “shameful”, reports Dawn online. “This was a shameful act to target civilians at the border villages of Pakistan,” Riaz had said earlier when he visited Chaman. In response to the attack, Pakistan had closed its borders with Afghanistan at Chaman and Torkham on February 18 after a series of terrorist attacks in the country killed over 100 people. After over a month of closure, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered reopening of the borders as a goodwill gesture.

Jerusalem, May 7 (IANS): Israel’s Cabinet on Sunday voted in favour of the controversial “Nationality Bill” which claims Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people and cancels Arabic as a formal language. The bill was approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, but it still needs to pass three rounds of voting in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, to become law, Xinhua news agency reported. The bill, considered by its opponent as discriminatory and racist, seeks revocation of Arabic’s “official language” status and to keep Hebrew as the only formal language in Israel. It also claims Israel as “the national home of the Jewish people”, and holds that “the right to realise self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people”. The bill was tabled by Avi Dichter, a lawmaker with the Likud ruling party and a former head of the Shin Bet security service.

Narine’s fastest fifty scripts KKR’s win
Sunil Narine of Kolkata Knight Riders hits over the top for six during match their IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. B e n g a lu ru, M ay 7 (PTI): Sunil Narine smashed the joint fastest IPL fifty in his sensational knock of 54 as Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed a hapless Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets to seal a Play-offs berth here today. Narine (54 from 17 balls) reached his fifty in just 15 balls, the same number of deliveries his KKR teammate Yusuf Pathan had consumed in 2014 against
Sunrisers Hyderabad, as he played some stunning shots much to the disappointment of the home crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The West Indian and his opening partner Chris Lynn (50 from 22 balls) put on 105 runs from just 6.1 overs in a show of batting pyrotechnics as KKR chased down the target of 159 in a jiffy. They romped home with 4.5 overs to spare. Yuzvendra Chahal

(4-0-39-1), Sreenath Aravind (1-0-26-0) and Samuel Badree (3-0-40-0) bore the brunt of the fury from Narine and Lynn. The KKR batting duo also notched up the record of the highest powerplay total in the IPL as the visiting side were 105 for no loss at the end of six overs. The win, their eighth of the season, sealed KKR a play- offs berth with 16 points from 12 matches. Already out of reckoning, RCB, on the other hand, slumped to their 10th defeat in 13 matches to remain at the bottom of league table with mere five points. Earlier, Travis Head smashed a brilliant unbeaten 75 after Mandeep Singh’s 52 as RCB recovered from a top-order collapse to post 158 for six after being put into bat. The big names like Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and A B de Villiers were dismissed cheaply as RCB slumped to 34 for three in the fifth over. Mandeep (52) and Head then stitched 71 runs for the fourth wicket to take the score past 150run mark. Head hit two sixes and a four from the final three deliveries as RCB took 21 runs in a late flourish. Mandee p hit four boundaries and a six in his 43-ball knock while Head struck three fours and five sixes in his 47-ball unbeaten knock.
The match began in a dramatic fashion with Gayle, who has failed miserably this season, getting out in the first ball bowled by Umesh Yadav. The West Indian tried to defend but the ball moved away and took a leading edge to land at the hands of KKR captain Gautam Gambhir at short cover. In comes Kohli and the India captain negotiated six deliveries for two runs before he was dropped by Piyush Chawla off the bowling of Yadav in the third over. Kohli (5), who has struggled this season, did not take advantage of the dropped catch and was out the next ball with Yadav having the last laugh. The change of pace did the trick as Kohli was beaten by Yadav’s delivery to be out LBW. Mandeep, on the other hand, hit some lusty blows at the other end, including a six off Chris Woakes, but another wicket - in the form of de Villiers - fell in fifth over. De Villiers hit a four off Sunil Narine but in the next ball, he was out cleanbowled while trying to play a sweep shot of a fullish delivery. With their best three batsmen gone for a meagre score, RCB reached 63 for three at the halfway stage with Mandeep and Head holding fort.

Real thrash Granada; Barca win
Real Madrid players celebrate during their match against Granada. BARCELONA, May 7 (Agencies): Real Madrid produced a ruthless first-half display to thrash already-relegated Granada 4-0 on Saturday and remain on course for a first league title in five years, while Barcelona hammered Villarreal 4-1. James Rodriguez put Zinedine Zidane’s side in charge in the third minute by bundling in Lucas Vazquez’s arrowed cross and then headed in a cross from forgotten man Fabio Coentrao to double their lead in the 11th, scoring for the fifth time in four games. Alvaro Morata followed the Colombian’s early strikes with two goals of his own in the 30th and 35th to kill off Tony Adams’s sunken side and put
Lajong to face Bengaluru AIFF rules out I-League, ISL merger for now FC in Federation Cup Mumbai, May 7 (IANS): Ruling out the merger of the I-League with the Indian Super League (ISL) in the immediate future, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) told officials from Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal on Saturday that it will talk with all stakeholders before taking a decision on the matter. “Patel informed the representatives that the revised roadmap of India
football has not yet been finalised and before a final decision is taken, stakeholders including the Asian Football Confederation would be consulted,” the AIFF said in a statement. “Indian football has made rapid progress over the last few years and it’s important for AIFF to take a long term view. The AIFF has been in discussion with AFC and will do what’s in the interest of Indian foot-
ball,” the statement added. The AIFF also asserted that the I-League will continue to be the premier domestic tournament of the country until the merger. The question of the merger of the I-League and the ISL has acquired new urgency since unheralded north-eastern outfit Aizawl FC capped a fairy tale season by winning the I-League, edging out formidable Mohun Bagan by a single point.
But despite winning the I-League, Aizawl’s future in the top division is uncertain since the AIFF and IMGReliance - the organisers of the ISL - want clubs to pay a fee of Rs 15 crore to participate in the new unified tournament. The AIFF only wants to allow three clubs from the present I-League - Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Bengaluru FC - in the new league.
Real level on 84 points with champions Barca. Barca lead the standings due to their superior head-to-head record although Real have a game in hand and will win a first domestic title since 2012 if they take seven points from their remaining three games. Barca’s formidable front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar all scored as the champions inflicted the heaviest league defeat of the season on Villarreal, who have the second best defensive record in Spain’s top flight. Neymar was in sensational form in his second game back from suspension and nudged Barcelona ahead in the 21st minute after pouncing on a deflected pass from Messi.
Cedric Bakambu fired Villarreal level in the 32nd after beating the offside trap to latch on to a clever through ball from Roberto Soldado. Barca were temporarily punctured by the leveller but a marvellous piece of skill from Messi allowed them to restore their lead on the stroke of halftime with a shot from the Argentine which flew beyond Andres Fernandez with the help of a deflection. Suarez powered the ball under the Villarreal goalkeeper in the 69th to score his third goal in two games and the 100th for the feted front three this campaign, while Messi grabbed the fourth with a deft chip from the penalty spot in the 82nd.

Reds held goalless by Southampton Swansea out of bottom three
Dejan Lovren dives into a challenge with Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse, poking the ball away from danger save. Southampton did see a bit of the ball in the first half, but they failed threaten Simon Mignolet’s goal for the entire opening stanza. That proved to be the trend for the rest of the half, as the sides went into the break all square. The opening stages of the second half was not any different with both sides struggling to create opportunities. Southampton made the first change of the game after 60 minutes when Moroccan Sofiane Boufal was replaced by
Nathan Redmond. However, Liverpool were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute when Jack Stephens was adjudged to have handled in the box. James Milner stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by Fraser Forster. Klopp introduced Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge for the final 20 minutes of the second half as they pushed for an opening goal. The Reds were camped in Southampton’s half for most of the closing stages in the second half, but were unable to bypass the visitors defence.

L o n d o n , M ay 7 (Agencies): James Milner missed a secondhalf penalty as Liverpool were held to 0-0 draw by Southampton at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. Jurgen Klopp’s charges enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages of the encounter although the Saints defence were organised to deal with any threats. The battle to avoid Premier League relegation took a significant twist on Saturday as Swansea City capitalised on Hull’s defeat to Sunderland with a victory against Everton allowing them to leapfrog the Yorkshire side into 17th place with two games left. After relegated Sunderland had taken a surprise 2-0 victory at Hull, Fernando Llorente headed the solitary goal as Swansea held on to register a nervous victory and climb out of the bottom three for the first time since March. Fo u r c o n s e c u t i ve home wins had put Hull’s fate firmly in their own hands but, given the chance to pull five points clear of third-from-bottom Swansea City, they suffered an attack of the jitters that could prove fatal. Second-half goals by Billy Jones and Jermain Defoe earned bottom club Sunderland a first win in 11 games and condemned Hull to a first home defeat under Marco Silva. Swansea knew a victory in the late kickoff would see them leapfrog Silva’s side and, after Llorente’s goal, the Swans defended stoically until the final whistle prompted a mass outpouring of relief.
