Bharatmala road proj to be launched; 20k km roads in phase-1 Gov, CM extend Moatsü greetings New Delhi, May 1 (Agencies): The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways will soon be launching a comprehensive programme to improve road connectivity across the nation under proposed Bharatmala Pariyojana. The project will improve road connectivity to coastal areas, border areas, backward areas, religious destinations and tourist destinations. It will also see construction, rehabilitation and widening of about 1,500 major bridges and 200 Railway Over Bridges and Railway Under Bridges on National Highways. Tipped as an umbrella programme for roads Bharatmala - will hit the ground soon ending all existing highway projects, including the flagship NHDP, in six months, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Sunday. “National Highways

Development Project (NHDP) and all existing schemes will be finished in the coming six months. We will launch Bharatmala very soon,” said Gadkari. The ambitious highways development project subsuming all road projects in the first phase will see the construction of 20,000 km of highways. Special emphasis will be given on providing connectivity to far-flung rural areas including the tribal and backward areas, he added. Detailed project reports (DPRs) are in the process of preparation and the first phase of the Bharatmala project will see construction of 20,000 km of highways, he said. Bharatmala is a mega plan of the government and the second-largest highways project after the NHDP that saw development of about 50,000 km.

NHDP, being implemented in various phases was initiated by former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and includes Golden Quadrilateral connecting four metropolises besides North-South Corridor connecting Srinagar to Kanyakumari and East-West Corridor joining Porbandar to Silchar. About 10,000 km of projects under NHDP are yet to be completed. “We will undertake massive road construction under the Bharatmala and lay a network of roads in border areas. We will connect all district headquarters with roads,” Gadkari said. The Prime Minister’s Office, earlier this month, after going through a presentation of the Bharatmala project has asked for Public Investment Board’s (PIB) clearance to the first phase of the project, a government official said.

The total investment envisaged under Bharatmala was pegged at Rs 10 lakh crore, he added. The first phase will see construction of about 20,000 km of highways network that includes economic corridor schemes, coastal and other roads. After viewing the presentation by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry, the PMO was of the view that a note should be floated for PIB approval, the official said. Meanwhile deliberations are under way for financing of the projects under Bharatmala and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) could be delegated projects under engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) as the NHAI board has the autonomy. A Road Transport and Highways Ministryappointed study under

the proposed Bharatmala project by global consultancy firm AT Kearney has identified 44 economic corridors. The economic corridor project is aimed at faster movement of cargo and will be developing not only economic corridors with a length of about 21,000 km but 14,000 km of feeder routes. The corridors include Mumbai-Cochin-Kanyakumari, Bengaluru-Mangaluru, Hyderabad-Panaji and Sambalpur-Ranchi, to name a few. Gadkari has been stressing on the need for reducing logistics cost in the country from the current 18 per cent. Noting that high logistics cost has been one of the major bottlenecks in trade and business, the minister has been stressing on the need to develop innovative methods for transport.

JACAS reiterates demand for autonomous State

Correspondent/Agencies

DIPHU, May 1: The Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) has reiterated its autonomous State demand for the people of hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. The o r g a niz a tio n, which caused unprecedented public uprising in the hills few years back, called for recommencement of tripartite discussion between representatives of JACAS and BJP-led NDA government on the issue for creation of Autonomous State and execution of Article 244 (a) of Indian constitution. Referring to the poll promises made by the BJP during the last parliamentary

14-year-old raped in M’laya TURA, May 1 (PTI): Two persons including a minor were thrashed by angry villagers in East Garo Hills district after they allegedly raped a 14year-old girl, police said today. The incident took place on April 27 at about 3:30 pm when they waylaid the girl on her way back home from school at remote Dinamgre village, a senior district police told. The angry villagers caught hold of the two and thrashed them and later handed them over to the police, the officer said. The girl was rushed t o t h e Wi l l i a m n a g a r Civil Hospital by family members after the incident and she is said to be in a stable condition. The family members had filed a rape case against the two at the Williamnagar police station, the police officer added.

election, Kharsing Teron, chairman, JACAS said that the BJP promised to implement Article 244 (A) for the two hill districts of KarbiAnglong and Dima Hasao after they came to power at the Centre. The then national president of BJP and present Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh in a public meeting at Haflong in Dima Hasao in 2008 and in an election rally at Dokmoka on March 30, 2014 and LK Advani in an election rally at Kheroni on March 25, 2009 respectively had committed to implement Article 244 (A) if they came to power but the ruling BJP Governments at Centre as well as State have not fulfilled their promises, Teron alleged.

On the other hand, the government has been showing keen interest on the issue of granting ST (H) status to Bodos, granting of citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis and granting of ST status to six communities in Assam but the promise of granting Autonomous State has not yet been taken up, said the JACAS chairman at a press conference at Diphu Press Club Besides, Teron also criticised the decision taken by Assam Gover nment to make Assamese as mandatory subject up to class X. While condemning the move, he said, “further division and re-organization of Assam is very much required for safeguarding identities, interest and rights of indigenous people of the

state.” M e a n w h i l e, A s o m Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has opposed to the move of JACAS for creation of autonomous state. At a press conference held at Bakulia, the leaders of AJYCP said that they would not support further division of Assam even though number of organizations are demanding and holding talks with government for creation of newer states. The students’ body said that problems can be resolved through dialogue without dividing the state further. The grievance of the people should be accepted and addressed but the unity of the state should not be endangered, said AJYCP president Biraj Talukdar.

two persons detained in Assam lynching incident

Guwahati, May 1 (PTI): Police today detained two persons in connection with the alleged lynching of two suspected cattle thieves in central Assam’s Nagaon district but refrained from terming it as a case of ‘cow vigilantism’. District Superintendent of Police Debaraj Upadhay t o l d P T I , “ We h av e picked up two persons in this connection and after investigation as to whether they were involved in ye s t e r d ay ’s ly n c h i n g incident, we will arrest them.” Yesterday’s incident was an outcome of “mob fury leading to the brutal killing of the two persons suspected to be cattle thieves”, he said. Asked if it was a case of ‘cow vigilantism’, the SP said, “Not at all. There is no communal issue involved in the incident. It was a case of mob being angry and

beating up the two suspected thieves”. “The owner of the cattle in Kasamari village saw two men taking away his cows and shouted for the local people to stop them. The people there came out and chased the two before the angry mob beat them up, injuring them seriously,” Upadhay said. The police team which arrived at the site rushed the two to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries, he said. The deceased have been identified as Abu Hanifa and Riyazuddin. A case has been registered and investigations are on. Although some incidents of cattle thieves being thrashed by the mob have been reported from Assam earlier, this is the first casualty after cases of cow vigilantism have been reported in recent times across the nation.

criminals amongst villagers, the police said. “We have arrested two of the main men behind the entire operation and search is currently on for the rest of the gang,” district police chief M G R Kumar said. He said the group of criminals were going into villages and buying betel nuts and other products

Cheating at petrol pumps: Govt orders surprise checks

NEW DELHI, MAY 1 (AGENCIES): Oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday ordered an inspection of all petrol pumps in Uttar Pradesh and random checks elsewhere to detect short-selling of petrol and diesel by tampering with the system in dispensing units. The move comes after the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) conducted raids on 11 petrol pumps in the state and discovered the alleged stealing of 50ml of fuel in every litre dispensed to customers. P r a d ha n s a i d tha t though the responsibility of right quantity of product dispensed lies with state governments as their weights and measures department installs seals on dispensing units, two officials of stateowned fuel retailers have been suspended following the raids.

“We have initiated action against respective field officers. The strictest possible action will be taken against guilty petrol pumps, including termination of licence,” he told reporters here. His ministry issued an order for inspection of all petrol pumps in Uttar Pradesh and random checks in other states to check tampering in dispensing units. Oil marketing company representatives will accompany the UP police STF and officials of the state’s weights and measures department, the food and civil supply department for inspection of all petrol pumps in Uttar Pradesh, he said. “Responsibility to ensure proper measurement lies with the state’s weights and measure department, but as owners, oil market-

Modi’s silence on important issues deafening: Cong New Delhi, May 1 (IANS): Emphasising that there has been an “atmosphere of fear” in the country under BJP’s rule, Congress on Monday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being “silent” on issues of national importance. “It is a matter of grave concern that there have been incidents of violence (across the country). BJP-governed states did not take any action to stop these attacks on innocent people,” Congress leader Anand Sharma said in a press conference here. Referring to attacks on animal traders by cow vigilantes, violence in the name of religion and Uttar Pradesh Government’s ‘anti-Romeo’ squads, the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said that Prime Minister, who speaks on every subject, must say something on these issues too. “His (Modi’s) silence is deafening. He is duty-bound to uphold constitutional democracy,” he said, asking what “prevents” Modi and Union Home Minister from speaking on these matters. Sharma said that the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states have more responsibility to stop these attacks on innocent people. “These incidents should not only be condemned but guilty must be punished,” he said, adding that no economic development would be possible without peace in the society.

Rajnath chairs meet on Kashmir, Maoists

Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, May 1 (IANS/AGENCIES): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a highlevel meeting on Monday to review the situation in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Maoist-affected areas following the killing of 25 CRPF troopers in Chhattisgarh. The meeting was attended among others by Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, Intelligence Bureau chief Rajiv Jain, RAW chief Anil Dhasmana and Central Reserve Police Force chief Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar. Informed sources said the meeting discussed the fresh trouble in Jammu and Kashmir, where a spike in stone-pelting incidents by students have caused a law and order problem. The meeting took place hours before Pakistan Army killed two Indian soldiers in unprovoked firing and mutilated their bodies near the Line of Control (LoC), and the killing of seven persons, including five policeman, in a bid on a bank cash van. Sources said that the Home Minister was briefed

Telangana police encouraging Haryana whips govt employees for power theft May vigilance wings of the Uttar of electricity would be peMuslim youths to join IS: Digvijaya Chandigarh, 1 (IANS): The Haryana Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam nalised and departmental NEW DELHI, MAY 1 (AGENCIES): Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday accused the Telangana police of radicalising Muslim youths and encouraging them to join the Islamic State by setting up a “bogus” website of the terror group. Singh claimed that the state police set up the website to trap Muslims youths and is “radicalising and encouraging them to become ISIS modules”. He asked whether the Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had authorised the state police “to trap Muslim youths and encourage them to join the IS”. “If he has then shouldn’t he own the responsibility and resign? If he hasn’t then shouldn’t he enquire and punish those who are responsible for committing such a heinous crime (sic),” he tweeted. The Congress leader’s comment drew sharp reaction from TRS, with Telangana Industries and IT minister K T Rama Rao demanding that Singh withdraw his remarks or provide evidence to back his claim. “Most irresponsible and reprehensible thing coming from a former CM (of Madhya Pradesh). Request you to withdraw these comments unconditionally or provide evidence,”

government has cracked the whip on power theft by government employees, including officers, leading to detection of 343 power theft cases and slapping of Rs 88.78 lakh penalty, a spokesman said here on Monday. A total of 504 government residential premises across the state were raided by the operation and

(UHBVN), the spokesman said. The raids took place over the past two days and as many as 330 meters were picked up on suspicion of having been tampered with. The raids were part of a campaign to curb power theft, including that by government employees and officers. “Government employees involved in the theft

action would be initiated against them by the department concerned under the Electricity Act,” the spokesman said. The maximum power theft cases were detected in Ambala circle (Rs 14.6 lakh), followed by Faridabad circle (Rs 10.86 lakh), Kaithal circle (Rs 9.51 lakh) and Gurugram circle (Rs 8.37 lakh).

Digvijaya Singh

Rama Rao, son of chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, tweeted. Later, talking to reporters on the issue in New Delhi, he asked if the Congress high command endorsed Singh’s remarks. The Congress leader, who continues to be the party’s general secretary incharge of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana after being divested of the charge of Karnataka and Goa on Saturday, said on Twitter that it was after Telangana police’s information “that MP police arrested those who were responsible for a bomb blast in a train in Shajapur district”. “It also resulted in Saifullaha encounter in Kanpur the same day,” he said. Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma said the Congress leader’s comments would demoralise the police force and lower the image of personnel engaged in fighting anti-national forces.

NEW DELHI, MAY 1 (AGENCIES): AIADMK (Amma) faction leader TTV Dhinakaran and his close aide were sent to judicial custody on Monday for a fortnight by a special court in the Election Commission bribery case. Special Judge Poonam Chaudhry sent Dhinakaran and his aide Mallikarjuna to Tihar Jail till May 15 after the police said that the accused were not needed for custodial interrogation. The police told the court that many witnesses were yet to be examined in the case and the investigation was still going on in the matter. Both were produced before the court after expiry of their police custody. The court also extended the judicial custody of alleged hawala operator Nathu Singh till May 15 after he was produced before it on the expiry of his oneday judicial custody. It also directed Tihar Central Jail authorities to produce the politician and his associate before the court through video conferencing after the defence cited security reasons. Dhinakaran was arrested here on the night of April 25 after four days of questioning for allegedly attempting to bribe an unidentified EC official to get the undivided AIADMK’s ‘two leaves’ election symbol for his faction for a by-election to the RK Nagar Assembly seat in Tamil Nadu, which was later cancelled by the Election Commission.

about the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and steps taken to tighten the security in the state. The meeting comes days after Rajnath Singh reviewed the status of 2015 developmental package announced for Jammu and Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and directed its expeditious implementation. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had held a meeting with Modi and Rajnath Singh last week during her Delhi visit and discussed the Kashmir situation. After returing to state, she held the first meeting of the Unified Headquarters after last year’s summer unrest that left more than 100 persons dead in the valley. Security in areas of Maoist influence in view of Sukma attack was also discussed, the sources said. A day after 25 CRPF troopers were massacred by Maoists in Chhattisgarh, Rajnath Singh visited the state and announced that the strategy to root out left-wing

extremism will be reviewed and a meeting of affected states has been convened on May 8 for the purpose. The Home Minister, termed the massacre as a “cold blooded murder” and said that their sacrifice won’t go in vain. Around 300 Maoists, including women, ambushed a CRPF contingent in a forested patch in Chhattisgarh, killing the troopers and escaping with their AK-47 assault rifles. In the Maoist-affected states, the home minister has been told, the security forces were continuing their operations against the ultras in areas like Sukma, where 25 CRPF personnel were killed by the Left-Wing Extremists on April 24. The home ministry has already directed the security forces engaged in anti-Naxal operations to strictly adhere to the standard operating procedures to foil Maoists attempts to attack them. Continuing unrest in Kashmir valley was also discussed in the meeting. Tension in the valley has been continuing since the April 9 bypoll to the Srinagar Lok Sabha when large-scale violence took place that claimed eight lives. After a few Kashmiri students were threatened in some parts of the country, the home minister had asked all state governments to provide security to Kashmiris living in their states. He had also asked the states to take strongest possible action anyone harassing Kashmiris.

Leicester of NE

izawl Football Club (AFC) became the first team from the entire north east to have won the Indian football league championship only in its second year of participation. History was scripted after AFC drew the penultimate league match against another notable soccer giant and veteran Lajong Football Club of Shillong. Even AFC Aizawl would not have at all played in the I-League this season as they finished eighth last year but the Mizo lads got an opportunity to stay afloat after a few Goan sides pulled out of the country’s top-flight league. AFC repeated the feat of English club Leicester Football Club which won the 2015-16 English Premier League title when the team was just on the verge of relegation. Formed in 1984, Aizawl FC earned the entry in India’s top-tier league, I-League, after winning 2015-16 League 2nd Division. The journey has been difficult but pure hard work, determination, consistency in performance, belief in their own abilities and coupled with a sense of immense pride in their team and officials has made the journey a success. The coach of the AFC is Khalid Jamil is an Indian association football manager and former player, who made seven appearances for the India national football team. AFC has a meagre budget of only Rs.2 crore which is the amount Mohun Bagan pays to Sony Norde. The Mizo lads can be also called the over comers since they had to rise up to the highest national standards from a state which is land locked and certainly not a mecca of sports of any variety. However, by sheer hard work and self-belief, the Mizo lads played and practised the sport in a high mountainous state in a playing field that is supposed to be among the highest elevated in the country. The north east today can boast of at least three states which have produced champions-Manipur (boxing, martial arts, weightlifting, football etc), Meghalaya (football) and Mizoram (football). The achievements of these states in the national level is considerable and significant, especially Manipur which is considered a sports powerhouse despite the disturbed conditions. It is quite interesting to note that despite the writ of militants, frequent bandhs and strikes, Manipur has been able to go on with its sports programme. The facilities in Manipur are among the best in the region. Same is the case with Mizoram, Meghalaya and to some extent, Assam. This means that the respective state governments ensure that sports facilities are constructed as per standard specifications and without any compromises. The same spirit is also followed with regard to training of sportspersons and holding competitions throughout starting from the grass root. It is also pertinent to note that all these states are enjoying good reputation with the central government with regard to utilisation of central funds and showing remarkable progress in training and nurturing sports persons. In all these, it appears that Nagaland is struggling in its self created problem as the state today does not figure anywhere. As a state, Nagaland used to be the home of football champions during the early 70s to mid-80s but that is now history. The huge success of Lajong Football Club of Shillong and now I-League Champions Aizawl Football Club(AFC) and former Santosh Trophy champions Manipur should make Nagaland embarrassed enough to bring about a complete overhaul of sports.

DailyDevotion Faith— Not Emotion We walk by faith, not by sight. —2 Corinthians 5:7 For a while, we are fully aware of God’s concern for us. But then, when God begins to use us in His work, we begin to take on a pitiful look and talk only of our trials and difficulties. And all the while God is trying to make us do our work as hidden people who are not in the spotlight. None of us would be hidden spiritually if we could help it. Can we do our work when it seems that God has sealed up heaven? Some of us always want to be brightly illuminated saints with golden halos and with the continual glow of inspiration, and to have other saints of God dealing with us all the time. A self-assured saint is of no value to God. He is abnormal, unfit for daily life, and completely unlike God. We are here, not as immature angels, but as men and women, to do the work of this world. And we are to do it with an infinitely greater power to withstand the struggle because we have been born from above. If we continually try to bring back those exceptional moments of inspiration, it is a sign that it is not God we want. We are becoming obsessed with the moments when God did come and speak with us, and we are insisting that He do it again. But what God wants us to do is to “walk by faith.” How many of us have set ourselves aside as if to say, “I cannot do anything else until God appears to me”? He will never do it. We will have to get up on our own, without any inspiration and without any sudden touch from God. Then comes our surprise and we find ourselves exclaiming, “Why, He was there all the time, and I never knew it!” Never live for those exceptional moments— they are surprises. God will give us His touches of inspiration only when He sees that we are not in danger of being led away by them. We must never consider our moments of inspiration as the standard way of life— our work is our standard.

imicry, by changing form, shape and colour on the spot, is unique to animals. Imagine if you went into a Chinese, or African, neighbourhood and had to defend yourself by looking Chinese or African. Or if you had to change your colour to black or white or polka dotted? Or become shorter, fatter, change the shape of your nose, increase the number of arms. We can’t do a single thing at will even if our lives depend on it. But animals and insects do it easily. They change their forms to look like species that predators avoid. They smell differently, they change their shapes and colours to blend in with the background, or with their prey, or look like blobs of inanimate matter. They have learnt to eat without being eaten. The mock viper (P. pulverulentus) of Asia is a mild harmless snake. It looks like a viperwith a triangular head, but the viper is a dangerous snake. The only difference is that the mock viper has round pupils. True vipers’ pupils are vertical slits. The Mock Viper knows it is harmless but is so clever that, when threatened, it squeezes the shape of its pupils to look like the slits of a true pit viper and then, in the panic

this causes, it flees. Appearing dangerous is the first defence. Another snake in this region, the Malayan bridle snake, mimics a venomous snake, called the Malayan krait, not just in its coloration, but by hiding its head under its coils when threatened. The Milk snake (L. triangulum) is harmless but changes itself gradually to develop bands like the venomous Coral snake. Is this mimicry or a coincidence? Definitely deliberate mimicry, because it happens only in those regions where the milk snake and coral snake are found together. In other regions, the milk snake doesn’t look anything like the coral snake. Likewise, the harmless Scarlet King Snake is born with white bands. But young snakes start developing the colouring of the coral snakes with the yellow, apricot, or tangerine coloured banding. The hognosed snake pretends to be dead and gives off a rotting smell. But before that it mimics a rattlesnake, raising its head as if about to strike and making a rattling sound. It’s not just defence, animals that hunt need to be clever too. Either they adopt amazing disguises or they fool their prey into believing they are harmless while they get close to them.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur Tuesday, May 2, 2017

King of all mimics The Green Lacewing larva feeds on woolly alder aphids who are protected by ants. So it plucks the white waxy wool from an aphid’s back, attaches it to its own and fools the ants into believing it is part of their flock. Once inside the circle, it eats the aphids. The Zone tailed Hawk feeds on live animals, but it mimics the flight of a vulture who is a carrion eater. Small animals are deceived by the gliding flight, and vulture like outline, and are then snatched up. The Cleaner Wrasse fish is harmless and its function is to eat the parasites on larger fish. They stand in line to be attended to. The Sabre Tooth Blennnyhas black and blue markings like the Cleaner and loiters at cleaning stations, imitating the Wrasse’s swimming pattern. It comes close to large fish and bites a chunk out of them before darting away. The Dusky Dottyback is a small 3 inch harmless

looking fish which lives in our Indo pacific coral reefs. It ranges in colour from pink to grey, but can change into any colour – green, yellow brown - to match its prey. It tricks baby fish of larger species into thinking it is one of them. Then it eats them. Its favourite prey are baby damselfish. This unique talent allows the dottyback to easily approach juvenile damselfish without detection and, by the time one group has alerted itself, it moves to new groups of fish and new colours. The Cheilinus wrasse is a carnivorous fish of the coral reef. It changes its colour to mimic harmless plant eating fish, like goatfish or parrotfish, and swims in their schools until it gets close to its prey. But different wrasses use the power of mimicry to do different things. The Potters wrasse mimics the Potters Angel — a larger, more spiny, harder to catch fish. The slender Tr umpet fish swims vertically

in the soft coral branches and changes its colour to match its background. It is almost invisible to the small animals that it hunts. The Marine flatworm increases its size to look like a sea slug, which is avoided by aquatic predators because it emits a poisonous and malodorous substance. The Bushveld Lizard (E. lugubris) in Southern Africa mimics notorious and noxious ‘oogpister’ beetles when young. While the adults blend with the red-tan colours of the Kalahari semi-desert, the lizard juveniles are jet-black and white and move with stiff, jerky movements and arched backs. Predators avoid the threat of the pungent, acidic fluid sprayed by these beetles when threatened. Metalmark moths (Brenthia) are hunted by jumping spiders. So they make themselves look like the spiders that hunt them. How does a moth with wings mimic an arachnid with eight legs? When a metalmark is confronted by the spider, it arranges its wings to mimic the spider’s pose, looking like a bigger, meaner, spider. Capturing other insects becomes easier for ant-mimicking spiders who align six of their legs to look like ant legs and the extra pair to look like the antennae of

a six-legged insect. Passing for a non-threatening ant allows them to get within easy striking distance of their prey. Before butterflies rise to dazzle the world with their beauty they have to spend days as defenceless caterpillars waiting to be eaten. Many masquerade as something that’s actually dangerous. Some, when faced with a predator, retract their heads backward into themselves, causing a bulge that looks like the head of a snake. The snake “eyes” are just spots on the caterpillar’s sides. Some even extend appendages from the top of their head to mimic a forked snake tongue. The Oscar goes to the king of all mimics: the mimic Octopus, Thaumoctopus mimicus, an eight tentacled creature that can look like anything it wants to : a seasnake, a foul tasting flatfish, a shrimp, a seahorse, stingray, anemone, starfish, lionfish, crab. Inhabiting the coast of Indonesia, this creature is so good at not being an octopus that it eluded human discovery until 1998. In any other civilization it would be preserved as a being of magic. In this world it is killed in the millions and eaten. To join the animal welfare movement contact gandhim@nic.in, www. peopleforanimalsindia.org

Post-mortem

Importance of Human Rights education

(From previous issue) Even the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi asked every state to set up State Human Rights Commission and had also recommended to incorporate human rights education in state education board syllabus and further urged the NGOs to create more awareness. Human Rights are fundamental to our every existence. To protect human rights is to ensure that people receive some degree of decent, human treatment. However, in many cases public authorities and government official institute policies that violates basic human rights. Such abuses of power by political leaders and state authorities have devastating effects. Slavery, poverty, physical torture, destruction of property, rape, killing, hunger, sex exploitation, forced labour, child labour, commercial sex exploitation, illiteracy, etc. are against human rights. As indigenous people of the land, Article 371A of the constitution of India provides a special provision giving the Naga people rights to protect their own way of life, its land and resources. The various Naga Tribal Councils in Nagaland raised strong voices against the certain notified community as an indigenous tribe of Nagaland is simply the demand to protect the rights of indigenous people as indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland. Basing on the parameters of value, a number of other aspects developed to regulate the behavioural patterns of man. These values such as dignity, liberty, equality, justice, ethics and morals, have had their significant impact to shape the human relations in a society. The main aim and function of law in any society is to regulate the relations between men and to alleviate the intensity of conflicts to promote peace, security, good and orderly behaviour of mankind to establish a conflict free society. In view of the linkage and importance that values play a significant role in the promotion and realization of human rights. Dignity is another value that regulates the behaviour of individuals. In the day to day interrelationships, individuals are expected to behave with one another in a dignified and honest manner. Equality is another important component of human rights. The aim of the Universal Declaration of Human Right and the constitutions of various

countries including India are to treat all the people on an equal footing without any kind of discrimination. Liberty is another concept which plays a vital role in the promotion of human rights. In simple terms, liberty means human beings are free to regulate their relations and are able to govern their relations, behave at their own will, and be responsible for their acts. Ethics and morals are considered as equal concepts. Morals deal with the personal character of an individual. On the other hand, ethics lays its importance on a social system, which regulates the code of conduct of a group of individuals, In other words, the morals need to be applied in each society depending on the values that are acceptable by a society. From the perspective of human rights, the concept of justice, equality and the participation of individuals in the socio-cultural aspects of the community are ethical aspects. Broadly speaking human rights may be regarded as those fundamental and inalienable rights which are essential for life as human being. Human rights are the rights which are possessed by every human being, irrespective of his or her nationality, race, religion, sex, etc., simply because he or she is a human being. Human rights are thus those rights which are inherent in our nature and without which we cannot live as human being. Human rights and fundamental freedoms allows us to fully develop and use our human qualities, our intelligence, our talents, and our conscience and to satisfy our physical, spiritual and other needs. They are based on mankind’s increasing demand for a life in which the inherent dignity and worth of each human being will receive respect and protection. Human rights are ascribed “naturally” which means that they are not earned and cannot be denied on the basis of race, creed, ethnicity or gender. As per the definition given by section 2(1) (d) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, right to life is guaranteed by the Constitution of India. ‘Life’ here means: human life” and not mere animal existence. Right to life is guaranteed by Article 21 read with Article 14, 25, 27 and 28 of the Constitution of India. Right to food is universal human rights, which is acknowledged at the regional, national and

international levels. The citizen’s right to be free from hunger enshrined in Article 21 of the Constitution of India, is to be ensued by the fulfillment of the obligations of the State set out in Article 39(a) and 47. The right to food is about freedom from hunger. Therefore, it is very important for every North Eastern states to effectively implement the National Food Security Act, 2013 without any involvement of wrong diversion and corruption. Many poor people around the world are going to die because they do no not get enough food to eat. Food is basic to human existence and that is why it receives the foremost attention of mankind. Poverty is the main reason for families to send their children to work. Due to child labour is large scale exploitation and deprived of human rights. Children’s rights are human rights. Children are no doubt supreme assets of the country. “Child is the father of man”. The crying need of the developing world is to live in peace and harmony, and here human rights and development can move together, provided man is conscious of his rights and his social and national responsibilities. Human right is a symbol of hope and the need of the hour as violation of human rights has become a day to day event in the society. Creating a safe, secured and harmonious environment for the neo-literate is the look of the family, the community, the civilized society and community at large. The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was a great human rights activist who strongly believed and practiced nonviolence. One of the great American Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, was a man who had sacrificed his life for the abolition of slavery. Nelson Mandela was one of the great symbols of human rights of our time whose life was committed to human dignity, equality, freedom & justice. I, Kezhokhoto Savi as a human rights activist paid my tribute to these great leaders who have sacrificed their lives for human rights to build a world of all human right for all. No confusion in ‘Rationality’

W

hile some learned intellectuals understands the stress on rationality for the progression of our society, some less learned intellectuals (as they claim themselves to be) may be confusing it as a mere move of the youths for their own self interest and a threat to our already fragmenting society. Observing the psychology behind the mindset of the Nagas, a scholar can come to terms that the Nagas are humble, dedicated to their beliefs, expresses freely in the society and are fairly rational in free environments. These are all good except that we pass our judgment or rationale, emphasizing on our emotions (because of the little understanding we have about human psychology), rather than coming to conclusion after going through all the data we have stored in our brain. Rationality is not an ideal in itself, it is rather a practice of reasoning whichever ought to be the best outcome not just for the present but also for times to come. Every rational decision is based on truth and so is designed to stand the test of time. Our society is in dire path if the same system continues for some more years and to those slow ones who doesn’t accept this fact, then we can explain it in accordance to the projections from our socio-economic context, (if needed). This world is no longer a place for the fools with their money or power. Just like we turn to our constitution when we do not find justice in our society, we can refer the international/Universal Laws basing on human rights in order to question all the irrational elements in our society and system that is withholding our progression. It wasn’t much of a surprise but the ignorant capacity of some and their commitment to their views has baffled the very rational capacity of the nagas. It is a downer when some less learned and informed individuals are so intimidated by the truth and logic in our ideologies that they decided to suggest the churches to influence our politics and dominate our society. What they have stated probably wasn’t the worst idea considering over 90% of us being christians but (it is not known whether they knew about it or not) what they have said were all horribly irrational and anti-democratic and demeans the very foundation of democracy. Some have opined that we best follow the biblical method of leadership via annointing by the church leaders, when in democracy it is the people who chooses their leaders by majority vote. Some have stated that we should follow the laws as inscribed in the holy texts. Are they aware that millions

of people died trying to liberate humanity from regious bindings in the European world during the medieval times? Do they know that the Civil War in the American history was about the abolishment of slavery (which in the Old Testament is allowed) after which modern ideals like Liberty, Equality, Human rights, Securalism, etc. became more prominent. These ideals are the reason why even they could express and live freely in the society and without understanding, “Why people are doing what?”, It is best that they do their part of research before coming to conclusion and proving himself a fool. (We don’t have to be like RSS). It is no scam that nagas are emotionally dependent in their reasoning and heeds no interest to logical reasoning. We choose to stay in the comfort zone by being ignorant and shutting ourselves from being filled up with logical reasoning, by doing so we are not doing anyone any favor. It is because of these the issues in our society takes too long to solve and even if it does, only at the expense of some or more reprecussion. We should no longer confine ourselves to the teachings from the society and academic institutions. Since we understand English, we should expand our knowledge to as much as different fields as possible so that our reasoning would be more close to absoluteness. We are all made up of matters and every matter is a part of our universe. We cannot escape these fact even if we try to and everything from physical manifestation to metaphysics and idealogy are all but connected. In order for us to understand more about life we should have enough idea from the tiniest to the biggest in the universe. From particle physics to astro physics, from ancient to contemporary history, from the evolution of early primitive man to modern days ideals, from the conversion of complex carbohydrates to blood sugar via our digestion, from our subconcious to external factors that determines the decision our concious mind, the principles of “Causality” to “Accidents” etc. With rationality governing our laws, we need not worry about any external or internal ignorant forces intimidating our politics or society for we would know what best be done by then. In view of ‘International Labor Day’ the LDPN has launched its official Youtube Channel to reach out to the people for social awareness in Eplatform. Iskha Wotsa, gen. secy. Complete transmission line in Peren district

Sir,

The completion of 66KV line from Ganesh Nagar to Peren district is pending despite written and verbal assurance given by the contractor and the department. The contractor has given written assurance on 10th June 2016 that he will complete the transmission line and sub-station, Jalukie on or before 31st July 2016 and Peren Sub station on or 30th September 2016 verbal assurance was also given that the work will be completed before Nov. 2016 as many important events were happening within the district during that time. But to our dismay the transmission line still stands incomplete. In this regards the organisation has submitted a memorandum to the executive engineer, transmission Nagarjan on 26th August 2016 and also to the Chief Engineer power on 20th September 2016 to complete the work at the earliest. But the contractor and the department failed to do so. Therefore, we urge the contractor and the power transmission department to commission the 66KV line to Peren district within May 2017. Heilusing Iheilung, President Jalukie Town Wards Chairman Union, Nagaland

He also pointed out that BJP was the only optional political party which would clear our State’s deficit which had crossed more than 1500 crores as well as bring solution to the Naga political problem. He also cited that during prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s time all state deficits were cleared and numerous projects were put up for the State. He also questioned other political parties for defam-

ing BJP party as anti-Christian and made it clear that BJP was purely a political party and its prime agenda under the party manifesto was development of all. Stating that there is a need for change of political leadership to develop the State, he appealed to all to vote for the party in bringing development to the State. Janger was accompanied by co- incharge Zanti Dumta, Rosy Yanthan, national executive member mahila morcha, BJYM State and mandel president of Peren and Tening.

New Delhi, May 1 (IANS): Traders dealing exclusively in petrol, diesel and other commodities that are exempt or have been kept zero-rated under the upcoming Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime need not register, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said on Monday. “If you are dealing in a commodity on which GST is not applicable, the trader does not need to register under GST. Petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel (ATF), crude oil and natural gas dealers need not register under GST,” Adhia said in a Q&A session via Facebook Live. But he added that if the traders are also dealing in other goods, then they need to register under the new indirect tax regime. Adhia said that since 30-40 per cent of states’ income is derived from potable alcohol and petroleum products due to which they preferred to keep these out of GST as of now.

units.” Condemning RBI Governor Urjit Patel for his comment on consolidation of some public sector banks, Das said: “The RBI cannot shirk off its responsibility of the huge NPAs as all the banks’ boards have RBI nominees as director.” “We do not understand how it is possible. He (Patel) opined the public sector banks to raise private capital from the markets and not rely on the government for that. He has not asked the government to compensate the PSU banks for the opportunity cost of ‘Jan Dhan’ exercise and for the entire period of demonetisation which adversely affected the bottomline of the banks,” Das said.

On reports that key provisions have been diluted by some states, he said it was pointed out to those states and they have assured the ministry that it would be corrected. The Indian real estate sector involved over 76,000 companies across the county. Some of the major provisions of the Act, besides mandatory registration of projects and real estate agents, include depositing 70 per cent of the funds collected from buyers in a separate bank account for construction of the project. This will ensure timely completion of the project as the funds could be withdrawn only for construction purposes. The law also prescribes penalties on developers who delay projects. All developers are required to disclose their project details on the regulator’s website, and provide quarterly updates on construction progress. In case of project delays, the onus of paying the monthly interest on bank loans taken for underconstruction flats will lie on developers unlike earlier, when the burden fell on home buyers, said real estate service provider JLL India CEO and Country Head Ramesh Nair.

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI): Gold prices came down by Rs 100 to Rs 29,450 per 10 grams on Monday, in the process halting the three days of gains, mainly due to a weak trend overseas and easing demand from local jewellers. Silver, however, recovered by Rs 175 to Rs 40,400 per kg, backed by increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said sluggishness in the overseas market and demand drop at the domestic spot market pushed gold prices down. Globally, gold fell by 0.41% to USD 1,262.50 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9% and 99.5% purity fell by Rs 100 each to Rs 29,450 and Rs 29,300 per 10 grams, respectively.

The developers will now have to get the ongoing projects that have not received completion certificate and the new projects registered with regulatory authorities within 3 months from 1 May. Under the rules, it is mandatory for the states and UTs to set up the authority. However, only 13 states and UTs have so far notified the rules. The Housing Ministry had last year notified the rules for five Union Territories--Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep, while the Urban Development Ministry came out with such rules for the National Capital Region of Delhi. The other states and UTs will have to come out with their own rules. A HUPA ministr y spokesperson said the ministry has been taking up the matter with all the states and UTs for implementation of the Act, requesting them to ensure action as per the provision of the Act within the time limit. The ministry had earlier formulated and circulated the model rules to the states and UTs for their adoption and it is their responsibility to notify the rules, the spokesperson said. This, he felt, is possible through trade and FDI inflows, technology tie-ups and cooperation on various projects. “Let us work together for enhancing the level of our economic activities for welfare of our people. From the Indian side, I welcome you with open arms. I can say with confidence that India was never a more promising destination than it is today,” the prime minister said. He called on the chambers of commerce and industry of both sides to engage with each other pro-actively and work closely, both at the government and B2B levels. “I know that Turkish construction companies have successfully undertaken many construction and infrastructure projects in other countries. New Delhi, May 1 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asserted that India was never a more promising investment destination than it is today as his government completes three years in office later this month. The BJP-led NDA government stormed to power in May 2014, winning by a huge majority. Addressing the IndiaTurkey Business Summit here, Modi said that since coming to power in this very month three years ago, the government has launched several initiatives to reform the economy and administrative processes. The government also launched several flagship programmes like Make in India, Startup India and Digital India. “Today, Indian economy is the fastest growing major economy in the world. In addition to maintaining this pace, our focus is to remove the inefficiencies from the system,” the prime minister said. The government, Modi said, is in the process of building a New India, adding that the focus is on improving ease of doing business by reforming policies,

nities in India, Modi said the country plans to build 50 million houses by 2022, metro rail projects in 50 cities and high-speed trains in various national corridors. The two-way trade has gone up to USD 6.4 billion in 2016, from USD 2.8 billion in 2008. “While this is encouraging, the level of present economic and commercial relations is not enough against the real potential,” Modi said. He spoke of energy, mining, textile, automobile and food processing as other areas that offer great promise. In his address to the Summit, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a free trade agreement with India to expand the ambit of bilateral economic ties. He also suggested that the two should explore the possibility of trade in local currency to deal with exchange rate fluctuations. Hardselling his country as an ideal tourist destination, the president said Indian families are increasingly organising wedding ceremonies in Turkey in recent years.

Defiant North Korea hints at nuclear tests

FILE -- A North Korean vehicle carrying a missile passes by during a mass military parade in Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Square.

SEOUL, MAY 1 (AFP): North Korea warned today that it will carry out a nuclear test “at any time and at any location” set by its leadership, in the latest rhetoric to fuel jitters in the region. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been running high for weeks, with signs that the North might be preparing a long-range missile launch or a sixth nuclear test -- and with Washington refusing to rule out a military strike in response. A spokesman for the North’s foreign ministry said Pyongyang was “fully ready to respond to any option taken by the US”. The regime will continue bolstering its “preemptive nuclear attack” capabilities unless Washington scrapped its hostile policies, he said in a statement carried by

the state-run KCNA news agency. “The DPRK’s measures for bolstering the nuclear force to the maximum will be taken in a consecutive and successive way at any moment and any place decided by its supreme leadership,” the spokesman added, apparently referring to a sixth nuclear test and using the North’s official name, the Democratic Republic of Korea. The North has carried out five nuclear tests in the last 11 years and is widely believed to be making progress towards its dream of building a missile capable of delivering a warhead to the continental United States. It raises the tone of its warnings every spring, when Washington and Seoul carry out joint exercises it condemns as rehearsals for

invasion, but this time fears of conflict have been fuelled by a cycle of threats from both sides. The joint drills have just ended, but naval exercises are continuing in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) with a US strike group led by the aircraft carrier US Carl Vinson. The Pyongyang foreign ministry spokesman said if the North was not armed with “the powerful nuclear force”, Washington would have “committed without hesitation the same brigandish aggression act in Korea as what it committed against other countries”. The statement reasserts the North’s long-running rhetoric on its military capabilities. Seoul also regularly warns that Pyongyang can carry out a test whenever it decides to do so. Pyongyang’s latest attempted show of force was a failed missile test on Saturday that came just hours after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pressed the UN Security Council to do more to push the North into abandoning its weapons programme. Tillerson warned the UN Security Council last week of “catastrophic consequences” if the world does not act and said that military options for dealing with the North were still “on the table”.

Tony Blair to return to politics LONDON, MAY 1 (IANS): Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has decided to again get involved in politics and take an active part in trying to shape the policy debate on Brexit. On the 20th anniversary of his New Labour win on Monday, Blair told The Mirror that money was not the motivating factor behind his return to politics and predicted that Britons would eventually want to rejoin the European Union. The former leader, who led Labour to a triumph in 1997, said: “This Brexit thing has given me a direct motivation to get more involved in politics. You need to get your hands dirty and I will... I am going to be taking an active part in trying to shape the policy debate. “We don’t know yet what the final deal on Brexit will be. We are advocating a very simple British common sense position, which is to say, let’s see what the Tories come up with first. “This is not about defying the will of the people. It is saying the will of the people may change when they see the final deal. “My prediction is it may take another generation but at some point we will want to be back in the EU -there is a direct link between the number of people and the size of an economy,” The Mirror quoted him as saying. However, things have moved on a lot in the 10 years since Blair has been

absent, and he admitted: “I know the moment I stick my head out the door I’ll get a bucket of wotsit poured all over me, but I really do feel passionate about this. “I don’t want to be in the situation where we pass through this moment of history and I hadn’t said anything because that would mean I didn’t care about this country. I do.” The former Prime Minister was nonchalant about his predicted 60 million pounds wealth and claimed he has given away most of it. “I have the capacity to earn money. I have made money which has given me a nice house in London and a nice house in the country and I am very lucky and the equity in those two properties is the bulk of my wealth,” he said. According to the tabloid, the 63-year-old has had talks with the Liberal Democrats about setting up a new force to fight for the centre ground and was coy when asked whether he would establish a new political party.

J A K A RT A , M AY 1 (IANS): An Indonesian man who claimed to be 146 years old -- the longest living human ever -- has died in his village in Central Java, the media reported on Monday. According to his papers, Sodimedjo, also known as Mbah Ghoto (grandpa Ghoto), was born in December 1870, the BBC reported. But Indonesia only started recording births in 1900 -- and there have been mistakes before. Yet officials told the BBC on Monday that his papers were valid, based on documents he provided and interviews with him. He was taken to hospital on April 12 because of deteriorating health. Six days later he insisted on checking out to return home. “Since he came back from the hospital, he only ate spoonfuls of porridge and drank very little,” his grandson Suryanto told the BBC. “It only lasted a couple of days. From that moment on to his death, he refused to eat and drink.” When asked about the secret of his longevity, Mbah Ghoto told the BBC last year that patience was key and that he had “a long life because I have people that love me, looking after me”.

Taliban announce start of spring offensive KABUL, MAY 1 (AGENCIES): The Taliban have announced they will launch their spring offensive on Sunday, signaling plans to step up attacks as the weather warms across Afghanistan, making both travel and fighting easier. The statement comes toward the end of a month that already has been the deadliest of the year. The militant group’s leadership vowed on Saturday that “every possible tactic will be utilized in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors,” including suicide attacks on military bases and diplomatic areas. The leadership also threated more so-called insider attacks by members of the Afghan security forces against their colleagues or foreign troops. Such attacks threaten the strength of the Afghan forces as they work to take over responsibility from international troops. The latest one occurred in March, when a member of Afghanistan’s government-backed militia program shot and killed five of his colleagues in Badghis province in northwest Afghanistan. In a sign of Taliban’s determination to replace Afghanistan’s government with one promoting a stricter interpretation of

Islamic law, they named their new offensive after a legendary Muslim military commander, Khalid ibn alWalid. Also known as “the Drawn Sword of God,” he was a companion of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. Afghanistan’s defense ministry responded by saying its security forces are prepared for Taliban’s new campaign. “The Afghan National Army is ready to neutralize the offensive,” the ministry said, adding that the soldiers now have the support and trust of many Afghans. In another development, a NATO aircraft crashed in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, and coalition forces were securing the site, the International Security Assistance Force said. Its brief statement provided no information about where the crash occurred or if there were casualties, but did say there was no indication it was downed by insurgents. Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar, deputy governor of the souther n Zabul province, said a helicopter belonging to foreign forces crashed on Saturday afternoon in the district of Shah Joy. He confirmed that the site was surrounded by foreign forces but had no information on the cause of the crash or whether anyone was hurt or killed.

Alobo Naga ties up with Dreamz Unlimited for new song

A

lobo Naga has released a new Nagamese song titled ‘Mistry Gaana’ featuring MOTO and the video is made in collaboration with Dreamz Unlimited. The song talks about the importance of various manual jobs which people often overlook or in most cases look down as odd jobs and go in search of white collared jobs. With the help of well experienced actors from the Dreamz Unlimited team,

the video depicts the joy and importance of manual and construction job, while the lyrics disseminates the typical mindset of the mass for whom there is no other profession except government jobs. The song is probably the first official Nagamese song for Alobo and he has perfectly executed the task of getting connected with the listeners through the lyrics which is easily understandable. With the message of

the song intended at creating awareness and glamour for manual and construction works the release of the song also coincided with the International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in some countries, a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement, socialists, communists or anarchists and occurs every year on May Day (1 May). Talking about the new song, Alobo said, “In the

recent year while doing project on my music school I spend almost a year assisting and working with the mason, the carpenters, the painters ,the plumbers etc. The amount you pay the bill to the workers every weekends was huge. What I realized was that there’s lots of money in this field and one can make a good career option out of it. The work-

ers were mostly non-locals and they work so hard what I don’t understand was that our own locals are hardly venturing in this field. In Naga society every parents wants their children to get hold of government and white collared jobs and most of the youths only aim for that as a result, there’s excess unemployment problem in our state.”

He said he came up with the song dedicated to the few handful local craftsmen (mistry) and also to encourage young people in Nagaland to opt for such jobs. He adds, “Some of you may consider such jobs as odd but remember no job in the world is small or big, it’s all about dignity of labour. Everyone need each other for the system to work. The

rich man needs a mason to build his house, where as the mason needs the rich man to run his kitchen.” The video was directed by Tiakumzuk while the audio was recorded at New Life Studio Dimapur. Music

is produced by Moto-tunes and the video is produced by Youthnet in accordance with its declaration of 2017 as Year of Construction Workers (YOCW) and Government of Nagaland. (Staff Reporter)

PSG’s title hopes dented by Nice

Ricardo Pereira celebrates with Vincent Koziello after scoring the second goal for Nice.

cardo Pereira broke out of his half and charged down the right. He seemed to have run into a dead end but turned back and laid the ball off to Balotelli, who held off Marco Verratti and curled a low shot under Kevin Trapp’s hands and into the corner from 20 metres for his 14th goal of the season. Shortly afterwards, there was a flare-up when

Paul Baysee and Cavani tangled in the Nice penalty area but the referee let the feuding pair off with a warning. Nice extended their lead three minutes after halftime, Pereira cutting inside and curling the ball past Trapp after Younis Belhanda had led a quick

counter-attack. That was followed by more trouble, firstly when Cavani pushed Nice coach Lucien Favre out of the way to retrieve the ball and then when Balotelli angered Blaise Matuidi by showboating near the corner flag. Marquinhos pulled a goal back in the 64th minute and a PSG equaliser looked on the cards until Motta was sent off for an incident in the Nice penalty area after the ball had been cleared. From the resulting free kick, Nice goalkeeper Yoan Cardinale sent Pereira away down the right and his cross was headed in by Donis at the far post. PSG’s frustration boiled over when Di Maria recklessly scythed down Arnaud Souquet and was sent off.

Federer to play in French Open Paris, May 1 (Agencies): Roger Federer has confirmed he plans to play in next month’s French Open. The 35-year-old did not compete in last year’s tournament because of knee and back problems. But Federer intends to play at Roland Garros following his victories at the Australian Open and ATP events in Indian Wells and Miami. “I am registered and my intention is to play,” he said, after beating John Isner in an exhibition match in Washington. “I feel very privileged to be back on a tennis court. Last year was extremely difficult, having had surgery

and the knee never healing. Then I had back pain too, and it all got too much at Wimbledon and I was out for six months.” “But I was able to spend some incredible time with the family and start preparing for this season and hoping that the work that I put in in the off-season was going to really pay off. I was going to get a second chance to really play tennis again on the professional tour and so when I did come back in Australia, it was really exciting.” The 18-time Grand Slam champion has won the French Open once, in 2009.

Loving husband, children & grandchildren

O

ur dear mother, Lt. Hojungla, W/o Lt. Litingse Sangtam, Ex. IBM & MLA, went to be with Christ at seven in the morning on 11th April, 2017. It was a sad and touching moment for us and we will miss her more than words could ever say. We genuinely feel that words are inadequate but one thing we do know is that, she would not want us to eulogize her, or exalt her in any way, but to magnify the grace of God in her. Mother was a spouse who deeply cared for her husband. She shared, encouraged his dreams and visions and gave him the confidence to take on the challenging activities for the Nagaland Statehood formation. A Mother of 10 children, 28 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren was a woman of prayer. She regularly prayed for her family and loved ones, for the work of God, for ministers and missionaries right up to the end of her life. Mother was utterly selfless! She was a giving and caring person, to a fault. She would give us the bite going down her throat and the shirt off her back. She was always thinking of others before herself. Mother would, and often did, do without herself so that others might have. She lived to make other people happy. Mother radiated loveliness to all she met. Even when mother was breathing her last - never lost her sweet Christian spirit. She was always thankful to all who did the least thing for her. We are immensely grateful to all individuals, neighbours, churches, unions, friends and all loved ones who have been a part of her long, lovely life’s journey and for the great care and support shown as she departed from this world. May the Lord’s richest blessing be abundantly with you all. DC-890

Mumbai Indian beat RCB to jump to top spot Mu m b a i , M a y 1 (Agencies): Mumbai Indians condemned Royal Challengers Bangalore to another IPL defeat, beating them by five wickets in a tight finish at the Wankhede Stadium. Chasing 163 to win, Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma hit an unbeaten 56 off 37 balls - while Jos Buttler earlier smashed 33 off 21 - to guide the home side to an eighth win in 10 and take them back to the top of the table. Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, RCB made a better a better first of things than their last three dismal performances - AB de Villiers top-scoring with 43 from 27. Virat Kohli (20 off 14 balls) hinted too at a return to form, smashing two sixes

in the opening five overs only to then fall to the first ball of Mitchell McClenaghan’s sixth. That brought De Villiers to the crease who, unperturbed by the loss of his skipper, cracked the first of his three fours and sixes in his innings later in the over. But De Villiers was one of three wickets to fall in four overs as the RCB innings threatened to derail, the visitors slipping to 111-5 after 14. Pawan Negi (35 off 23 balls) and Kedar Jadhav (28 off 22) lifted the score with their 54-run partnership in quick time, though they fell to successive McClenaghan (3-34) deliveries in the final over. RCB’s spirits were lifted with the wicket of Parthiv Patel to the very first ball of Mumbai’s run-

chase, but Buttler’s sweet striking helped the hosts to 55 runs from their six-over powerplay. Buttler ultimately departed in the eighth, chipping Negi (2-17) to the fielder at extra cover, while the left-arm spinner also accounted for Nitish Rana (27 off 28) in his next over.

Mumbai then looked to be in a spot of bother when Kieron Pollard (17 off 13) holed out to deep midwicket three balls prior to Krunal Pandya (2) retiring hurt. But Sharma’s classy half century - featuring six fours and a six - safely saw his side to victory with a ball to spare.
