ACAUT wants report on Lokayukta panel D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland has opposed the move of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) to extend the tenure of the select committee on Nagaland Lokayukta Bill 2015 by another six months, instead asked the committee to table the report in the monsoon session of the assembly in July 2017. In a statement, ACAUT media cell reminded NLA that tenure of select committee on Nagaland Lokayukta Bill 2015 was for six months and extendable by another six months at a time, which has been expired. However, in the sixteenth special session of the 12th NLA on May 27, 2017 the chief minister had revived the tenure of the committee. In this regard, ACAUT demanded that the committee to table the report in the monsoon session as the report was ready. Also, ACAUT said that on May 26, 2017, upon invitation by the chief minister at his office, they had submitted a petition to Dr.Shürhozelie Liezietsü demanding that the Lokayukta Bill be implemented during the monsoon session. ACAUT therefore urged Dr.Shürhozelie to apply his wisdom and institute the Lokayukta in Nagaland.

D I M A P U R , M ay 2 8 (NPN): Nagaland Governor P.B.Acharya reiterated that in a democratic country everyone has a role to play and decried the culture of over dependency on government as it would impair society’s progress. Speaking on the occasion of the programme for the adoption of Kacharigaon primary school by Innerwheel Club Dimapur, the Governor lauded their initiative as it was the need of the hour. He further requested the club members to continue in utilizing their capacity for society. “The strength of the chain lies on the weakest link” Acharya said. Innerwheel Club Dimapur has adopted two government schools under its wings-the first being Government Middle School at Zeliangrong village and the second at Government Primary School, Kacharigaon. He pointed out that government schools had students who were mostly from poor families. He underscored the situation that the poor people have

been facing in a democratic country which was not their creation but through deficiency and default. “There is no end to strengthen a family which requires to be empowered and that unless the poorest of the poor is uplifted, there is no necessity in any sense of the term to strengthen the poor” he said. Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t school education as having the highest expenditure , he said that government teachers receive higher salary comparing private school teachers but the performance of the private institutions was better than in the recent HSLC and HSSLC exams. Ban on cow slaughter not acceptable to Nagas: NPCC D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): NPCC has slammed BJP government at the Centre, saying that the move to impose nationwide ban on sale of cow/cattle for slaughter by taking shelter under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 was a blatant display of their communal and divisive agenda, which would not be acceptable to the Nagas. Rather, NPCC media cell in statement said that the BJP-RSS indulging in cow politics was a ploy to cover up their failures after promising “acche din” to the people. Congress also said that even after three years in power, Prime Minister and his “bhakts” were still behaving like an opposition. Other than cow politics, NPCC stand was that BJP government was only busy in celebrating and inaugurating Congress led UPA projects nationwide. T h e r e f o r e, N P C C
asked the Nagas to wake up and collectively voice out before it was too late to stop the tide of BJP led communal forces. Congress party in the state also asked NPF government “which has been the comfort party of the BJP for the past 15 years” to out rightly reject nationwide ban on sale of cow/cattle for slaughter. NPCC also hit back at State BJP unit that its clarification on secular credentials could not absolve the blatant misdeeds perpetrated by their communal masters across the country. Further, NPCC vowed to stand by the Nagas and that it would not allow BJP and its communal affiliates to start coercing or dictating our people according to their communal agenda. For this, NPCC said it was prepared to walk an extra mile to safeguard our rights to live as free citizens guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.
tions and asked teachers to start focussing, participating and create a thought to contribute one’s talent to uplift the society. He also encouraged the teachers to strengthen the moral values of the children by creating a relationship, knowing and understanding the family background. Acharya further spoke on the importance of midday meal and the various facilities that will help the students have healthy body and healthy mind. Later, chief guest inaugurated the school and participated in planting tree within the school premises. The programme was also attended by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome. The school was inaugurated under the Presidentship of Dr Khushboo Agarwal and club literacy Chairman Asha Sharma. It may be mentioned that Innerwheel club of Dimapur had been working on its literacy mission. The club has adopted two government schools under its wings namely Government Middle
School (GMS) at Zeliangrong village and Government Primary School (GPS) at Kacharigaon. The club provided fencing in school compound, repaired toilets, hand washing station with running water, renovated and painted the school building, set up a library for students , sports equipments, and shoes-socks for children. The club aims to make Government schools more equipped to decrease the drop-out rates. The club has multiple projects on literacy and has process of setting up an adult literacy centre, sponsored 14 girls under asha kiran and had got sponsorship for 10 girls from the governor under the scheme “Beti bachao beti padhao” and had been actively helping out in the orphanages for education. The club will continue to be associated with the school providing them more support as and when required and is planning to adopt more schools in future with the vision “ Every school in a happy school and every child a literate.”
Need innovative ways for dirty wars, says Army Chief NEW DELHI, May 28 (PTI): The Indian Army is facing a “dirty war” in Jammu and Kashmir which has to be fought through “innovative” ways, Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat has said, stoutly defending the use of a Kashmiri as a ‘human shield’ by a young officer. In an exclusive interaction with PTI, Rawat said the main objective of awarding Major Leetul Gogoi, when a Court of Inquiry was finalising its probe into the incident, was to boost the morale of young officers of the force who are operating in a very difficult environment in the militancy- infested state. “This is a proxy war and proxy war is a dirty war. It is played in a dirty way. The rules of engagements are there when the adversary comes face-to-face and fights with you. It is a dirty war.... That is where innovation comes in. You fight a dirty war with innovations,” Rawat said. The Army Chief ’s Commendation medal to Gogoi, who had tied a man to an Army jeep and used him as a human shield from stone throwers last month

was criticised by human rights activists, Kashmiri groups and by a few retired Army generals. A video of the incident had triggered a row with many condemning it. Gogoi was awarded for his sustained efforts in counter- insurgency operations. “People are throwing stones at us, people are throwing petrol bombs at us. If my men ask me what do we do, should I say, just wait and die? I will come with a nice coffin with a national flag and I will send your bodies home with honour. Is it what I am supposed to tell them as chief ? I have to maintain the morale of my
troops who are operating there,” Gen Rawat said. Talking about the complexity of the security challenge in the state, he suggested it would have been easier for the armed forces if the protesters were firing weapons instead of throwing stones. “In fact, I wish these people, instead of throwing stones at us, were firing weapons at us. Then I would have been happy. Then I could do what I (want to do),” he said. Gen Rawat, who had served in Jammu and Kashmir extensively, said if people in any country lose fear of the Army, then the country is doomed.
NPF welcomes DAN’s endorsement of Dr.Shürho D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): Naga People’s Front (NPF) has welcomed the endorsement of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) legislature party, the ruling coalition of Nagaland, for chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü to become a member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. According to NPF spokesperson, Achumbemo Kikon, the resolution was introduced by chairman, DAN T.R. Zeliang at the DAN Legislators meeting held on May 26. The DAN put on record the magnanimity shown by those legislators, who offered to vacate their seats for Dr. Shürhozelie. NPF also appreciated the sacrifice made by sitting parliamentary secretary, Khriehu Liezietsü in vacating his seat to pave way for his father to get elected as member of the Assembly. (Cont’d on p-8)
Tuensang Hospital in pathetic state D imapur , M ay 2 8 (NPN): Following a joint visit by Eastern Nagaland Wo m e n O r g a n i s a t i o n (ENWO), Tuensang Unit and the Chang Students Union (CSU), Tuensang Town, to the Civil Hospital Tuensang from May 24 to 26,2017 the two bodies have issued a joint appeal to the department responsible and authorities to redress myriad grievances at the earliest failing which the public of the town would be compelled to make their move and the Union was prepared to take further steps if the demands were not fulfilled. According to a joint statement by CSUTT president Bhukyim and ENWO Tuensang unit president Bahla, the condition of the hospital has been degenerating instead of improving. The neglect was such that it had even caused death in some particular case due to
“poor maintenance”. The two bodies were however grateful to the doctors and nurses for their “selfless sacrifices” while discharging their duties. In their list of demands, the two bodies have stated that besides unavailability of required medical specialists, the hospital also does not have even an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and managing with broken machineries. The shambles in infrastructure and non availability of required doctors has compelled patients to travel beyond Tuensang even for minor surgery or other health issues. The demands include: (1) permanent posting of at least two Gynaecologists to Tuensang (2) posting of Paediatrician, Anaesthetist and Eye Specialist (3) replacement of X-ray and Ultra Sound machines (4) repair of ambulance vehicle
for emergencies (for which clarification and justification was reportedly sought by the departmental authority (5) posting of doctor specialised in treatment of tuberculosis. The two bodies reminded that the above demands are not new but which had been raised by ENWO Tuensang Unit on September 24,2016. Despite lapse of eight(8) months since, the department authorities have not responded and instead “abandoned” the hospital and left public to face untold hardship. Despite the hardships faced by the public, CSUTT and ENWO Tuensand Unit maintained they have shown “resentment”. However in the present situation, they demanded that the government and the higher authorities of the department take step if not , both including public would be compelled to act. K Y M C

New cattle slaughter rules will curb its smuggling to Bangladesh: BJP
The BJP in Meghalaya today said that the latest ban on sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets will curb its smuggling to Bangladesh. “There is a massive cattle smuggling racket in the state which has skyrocketed the price of beef,” state BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh said. Meanwhile, the media unit of the party has also petitioned BJP leader Nalin Kohli to allay fears and sentiments of the indigenous tribals who solely depend on beef as their source of dietary protein. “The matter related to cattle and cattle slaughtering has cropped up again and people are scared if their food habits will be disturbed,” state BJP vice president and spokesperson J A Lyngdoh said. “We have taken a note of the issue and also requested party leader Nalin Kohli to take up the matter with the Centre to allay fears,” he said. He said that the Centre’s notification in this regard is to curb the menace and increase cattle farming at a time when the state is heading towards organic farming. Over 8,000 cattle have been seized in the state in the last five years along the Indo-Bangladesh border, Opposition Hills State Peoples Democratic Party legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit had told the Assembly earlier this year and had called for a joint effort by the state as well as the Central agencies to stop smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh.

According to the villagers, the whole polling centres has been withdrawn and the voters’ names have been rubbed out. The villagers registered objection yesterday in a public meeting held at Hoglakata village lower primary school play ground and threatened to take up forceful agitation to achieve their democratic right. On enquiry at the Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioners office, a senior official of the election branch informed that the deletion was not at all intentional and it may have happened due to technical inaccuracy. He said that the matter was identified and everything has been corrected in official record. The voters of polling station no 51 at Hoglakata village can now vote in the coming election, he added.
off from Tezpur Air Force station on Tuesday on a routine training sortie and its wreckage was found on Friday in a dense forest, 60 km from Tezpur airbase. The Indian Air Force has already ordered a court of inquiry into the crash. The wreckage was spotted from air, and search teams reached the crash site today only. The rescue teams could not reach the spot earlier due to inclement weather and because the area had dense foliage. The plane was part of a two-aircraft formation when it went missing. The first batch of the Russia-made fighter jet was inducted by the IAF in the late 1990s. Since their induction, seven crashes have taken place.

IMPHAL/ Shillong, May 28: Manipur Congress S u n d ay s a i d C e n t r e ’s ban on sale of cattle for slaughtering was a direct attack on Christians and Muslims. The ban of cattle slaughter was against Muslims and Christians and a challenge to the two communities by the BJPled NDA government at the Centre, said Congress spokesperson and sitting MLA Md Fajur Rehman. Addressing a news conference at Imphal Congress Bhavan today, the spokesperson alleged that the recent move of the Central government has insulted secularism of the country. He said that India as a secular country has now been put at stake by a “dictator government”. The move of the BJPled NDA government has severely hurt the sentiment of the Muslim community who were obser ving Ramjan and Congress party was ready to fight the latest challenge in the fore of the minority communities of
the country, he said. “Congress will fight tooth and nail the challenge in the fore of the minority Muslims and Christians,” the Muslim leader said. Alleging that BJP as a communal minded party infusing communal venom among the different communities, particularly among the minority communities, the Congress spokesperson called upon the people to join hands with the Congress in rooting out such party from the soil of the state. Former deputy mayor of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) Meibon Phaomei who also attended the news conference alleged that the latest move of the Central government once again showed anti-Christian activities which the BJP has been indulging across the country. The latest move was nothing but showcasing BJP’s disrespect of people following Christian religion. “Christians always respect Hindus and we never interfere in their affairs and food habit. But, BJP has interfered in the food habit

at Ronghana village in Ri-Bhoi district yesterday, two persons were arrested for their involvement in leading the mob in the attack,” Gotmare said. They were identified as Ferdynald Kharkamni, president of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) North Khasi Hills unit and Aibor Pliar, organizing s e c r e t a r y o f K S U ’s Central body. The district administration is in the process of identifying all the members of the mob who were involved in the attack and appropriate action will be taken as per law of the land, he said. Meanwhile, the KSU has denied having given any order for the attack. “They categorically denied of claiming responsibility for the attack although they said the unit leaders were asked to go and inspect the railway construction sites,” Gotmare said. Heavy machiner y of the Railways were destroyed when a mob
sprang a sudden attack at the site yesterday. Labourers’ camps, four earthmovers, seven dumpers and a vibrator machine were damaged before the fire was doused by the police yesterday. Gotmare, who held a meeting with the KSU central body leaders last night in the presence of the SP, said that the KSU was “irked” by the construction which took place without getting a no objection certificate (NOC) from the tribal autonomous district council. “I informed them that the land acquisition was under taken when the old act was in place, according to which there was no need for getting such an NOC,” Gotmare said. The KSU has openly aired its opposition to the construction of Railways in the Khasi Jaintia Hills region on the grounds that it would lead to influx of outsiders in the tribal state.

Imposing uniformity a Manipur organisations say no to oil exploration dangerous tendency: Cong Guwahati, May 28 (IANS): Slamming the NDA government over restrictions on beef and rising incidents of cow vigilantism across the country, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma on Sunday termed imposing uniformity in a multireligious, multi-lingual and multi-ethnic country like India a dangerous tendency. “I do not think that there should be a ban on peoples’ food habit, dress and their thinking process. We are a federal country and there are people of different religious and ethnic affiliations. So it would be dangerous to dictate uniformity,” he said at a press conference here. The government must leave it to the states and the people or to the society of the particular area, said

the former Union Minister on the occasion of “Betrayal Day” -- marked as such by the Assam unit of the Congress to protest “betrayal” by the BJP during three years of its rule at the Centre and one year in Assam. Sharma also slammed the incidents of rising incidents of cow vigilantism, saying thugs and lumpen elements cannot be al-
lowed to rule. “We are a democracy, we have the Constitution and there is law. Let law take its own course of action,” he said, adding that lynching has become common everywhere in the country under the NDA rule. He termed the Narendra Modi government’s policy on Pakistan a “diplomatic disaster”.
Imp h a l , M a y 2 8 (Agencies): Activists in Manipur are spending sleepless nights these days giving series of awareness programmes to the villagers as several oil companies begin to carry out surveys to drill oil. In the past few days several awareness programmes have been organized both in the valley and in the hills by the concerned groups and activists. Noted activist Aram Pamei told Newmai News Network on Saturday that the villagers are firm in their stand not to allow any company to drill oil in their lands. “When we interact with villagers in Nungba, Sibilong, Oinamlong and Paitol areas the villagers expressed their unhappiness that these oil companies do not respect their rights,” the noted activist stated maintaining that the government and oil companies are violating the rights of the villagers. According to Pamei, the villagers told them

ganized by the Zeliangrong Students Union, Manipur, Sibilong Village Authority, Phaitol Village Authority, Committee on the Protection of Natural Resources in Manipur and Peace Core Team, Manipur, according to a joint press release from the organizers. “The community meet

was organized to promote communities rights and defense of their land, forest and rivers amidst aggressive push for extractive industries and large infrastructure projects in Tamenglong district and other parts of Manipur,” it stated. According to the press note, the participants of the two community meets resolved to defend their land and resources from any exploitation and plunder by oil companies such as the Asian Oilfield, Oil India Limited, Jubilant Energy, Alphageo etc. The participants also resolved to endorse the positions of previous public consultations on oil exploration to reject any form of surveys and direct oil exploration and drilling from Manipur by the oil companies, the statement added. It may be noted here that on May 24, activists and several green organisations had held a programme in Imphal and reaffirmed against oil exploration in Manipur.

Police arrest couple trying to dispose woman’s body Correspondent
IMPHAL, May 28: Manipur police Sunday arrested a couple for trying to cremate the body of a woman. Police suspect foul-play into the death of the woman identified as Th Shanti Devi (40) who was the second wife of the arrested man. Police picked the couple, RK Modhusana (45) of Singjamei Wangma Kshtri Leikai and his first wife while they were preparing to cremate the body of Shanti Devi at the bank of Imphal river at New Lambulane under Porompat police station early this morning. A police team rushed to the spot after locals informed that the couple was trying to dispose the body without performing any
religious rites. According to parents of the decease, her husband Modhusana informed them that their daughter has committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling of her room late last night, around 11.30 pm. The arrested couple came early Sunday morning to the deceased parent’s house and to hand over the 25 days old baby. Locals said that the couple transported the deceased in an auto-rickshaw and tried to cremate it at a public crematorium at the Imphal river bank. However, with none accompanying the couple for cremation of the body, the locals, who felt suspicious, reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the couple.

Meira Paibi Day observed in Manipur Correspondent
IMPHAL, May 28: Commemorating the movement of Manipuri womenfolk against the atrocities committed by security forces deployed in the state on May 28, 1980, 19th Meira Paibi Numit was observed on Sunday in Manipur. The main observance function was held at Tharo Devi Lampak in Khurai Salanthong in Impahl East district under the aegis of the Meira Paibi Day Observation Committee. T h e f u n c t i o n wa s marked by offering of floral tributes to the statues of Meira Paibi Imas (leader of women torch bearers). Various speakers on the occasion observed that if women of both the hills and valley could go together as one, the Manipur society would come forward and be able to fight effectively against the various atrocities committed in the state.
Women leaders addressing the occasion were also of the opinion that sacrifice, humanity and possessing qualities of being a mother would make the Meira Paibis spirited. On the other hand, the leaders also observed that the movement of the Meira Paibis seems to be moving backward and expressed concern over the diminishing role of the women of today in protecting the lives of the civilians compared to that of the past. It may be mentioned here that four persons including a pregnant woman were gunned down by CRPF personnel on April 26, 1980 at Patsoi Langjing, a village in Imphal West District during a combing operation in the aftermath of killing of three CRPF Jawans by unidentified armed militants CRPF also fired and injured a woman vendor, Meisnam Ongbi Thambal-
sana of Kangabam Leikai at the main market in Imphal on April 27, 1980. In the aftermath of the Langjing murder, the women vendors raised agitation against the chief minister of Manipur to stop the killing of innocent persons by the CRPF personals. The uprising was met with an iron hand by imposing curfew for nine days from the 28th April, 1980. And following a resolution passed by a public meeting on May 14, 1980, around 10,000 women marched in Imphal. The dead of a woman named Sinam Priyari during the procession became a turning point for the whole of women organization in Manipur. Earlier, as a part of the observance of the day, a procession was organised to mark the occasion. Around 500 women from various parts of the state took part in the procession.
UGC said there was a need to look at the diversification of the curriculum and students. “Our universities are not representing all sections of society. We need to allow pluralism in campuses. We should not confine only to straight, methodological, statistical data in research, but should think of pluralism,” Prakash said. Prakash advised students to invest in a good library than invest in creating wealth like houses and cars. “Always dream big. There will be more downs than ups. You need to learn to transform failures into successes. Hard work, discipline, integrity, perseverance, dignity and way of speaking are essential,” he told students. Speaking on the occasion, CCSU Vice-Chancellor Dhruba Jyoti Saikia appealed to the students to become critical thinkers and to have compassion.

counterinsurgency operations since December, 2014 and are left with only a handful of members within the State. But the outfit has at least 150 cadres in their camps in Myanmar. Sources said that though the ULFA(I) triggered a blast on a oil pipeline on the night of May 24, in which one militant was killed, there was no specific input of the militant outfit’s attempt to create trouble during the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apart from the interState border areas, a small group of the ULFA(I) is reportedly moving around in Darrang and Udalguri districts and the leader of the group was recently killed in an encounter in Kalaigaon. The sources revealed that the ULFA(I) along with the NSCN(K), is trying to launch an extortion drive in Tirap and Changlang districts of Arunachal
Pradesh. A few mill owners and petty traders received extortion demands from the militants but it is still not known whether they are paying. On the other hand, the ULFA(I) started making extortion demands to cross sections of people in Upper Assam districts, particularly in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. Those who received the demand notes include tea garden owners, businessmen and even small tea growers. However, according to information available with the security agencies, most of those who received demand notes are not paying the ultras and the outfit is facing a severe financial crunch. The militant outfit is also not sending its own cadres to collect money and they are trying to use linkmen or sympathizers not only to hand over extortion notes but also to collect the extortion money.

Guwahati, May 28 (PTI): Former UGC chairman Ved Prakash today urged teachers to impart lessons in values enshrined in the Constitution and teach the essence of pluralistic society to the students. Delivering his speech at the first convocation of the Cotton College State University, Prakash said: “As a citizen, if we are not aware of Constitutional imperatives, then we are ignorant of our basic values.” As an example, he referred to the Article 51-A of the Constitution which deals with fundamental duties of citizens and said that there were a large number of youth who were ignorant about this. “As an institution of higher learning, we not only need to create awareness among our youth, but also consciously promote them by way of their appropriate integration in our existing curricula,” Prakash said. According to Assam Tribune, the areas bordering Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland are still vulnerable to militant attacks as the ultras can sneak into those places from their bases in Myanmar. Maharaja turns pauper
I
t is a bitter truth that the Air India, known worldwide by the famous Maharaja, is being considered for virtual closure as the government battles itself to reduce the colossal loss around Rs.3000 crore a year excluding its debt of around Rs.50,000 crore. Valuation of aircraft of Air India will be around Rs.20 to 25 thousand crore. The Maharaja’s halcyon days came to gradual end when the government ensured a slow death by forcing the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines. Air India used to be one of the best airlines in the world (its ‘hawai sundaris’ included Maureen Wadia and Parmeshwar Godrej, among others) but the rot that set in after its unceremonious nationalisation by prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru took a few decades to show up as big losses. However, the rot set in after 1999 when successive civil aviation ministers piloted Air India to its descent by appointing corrupt bureaucrats in the airlines and gradually merging the national airlines with the domestic airline(Indian Airlines). In his book Descent of Air India Jitendra Bhargava, former executive director of Air India writes how the airline had been on steep descent over the decades and how, since April 2012, the Union government has pumped in more than Rs 22,280 crore to Air India’s core equity as part of its turnaround plan. Being a government carrier is more of a curse than a boon as Air India has to cater not only to the innumerable VVIPs but also tens of lakhs of government employees who are eligible for holiday travel cost by air and this too has to be booked by Air India. The merger of Air India with Indian Airlines witnessed how the pilots and crew of the former were given a raw deal when pay and perks of the latter, which were greatly enhanced prior to merger, continued. As a result, Air India pilots and crew drew much less pay and got less perks since they were denied hikes in line with returns. There are also hundreds of appointments made by the bureaucrats sitting at the chief executive chair of Air India to please their political masters even if it adversely affected the performance and revenues. It is true that in spite of having the most bloated personnel structure in the industry, Air India continues to provide the worst service in the skies. Other airlines have less than half the employees of Air India but they have ensured that their companies are not in the red. To add to the misery, it was during the tenure of civil aviation minister Praful Patel, that Air India placed orders for 28 jet planes when were then increased to a whopping 68 jet planes. The mind boggling purchase of almost triple the number of aircraft which Air India needed, has let to huge cost in running it. A PIL was also filed asking why lucrative and money making routes were “given away” to a private airlines supposedly favoured by a former minister. It seems that the Maharaja who was forced to wed ‘Indian Airlines’ could face gradual extinction and that would be indeed a sad chapter for a once famous brand name who became a pauper because of the policies of the government.
DailyDevotion Unquestioned Revelation In that day you will ask Me nothing. —John 16:23 When is “that day”? It is when the ascended Lord makes you one with the Father. “In that day” you will be one with the Father just as Jesus is, and He said, “In that day you will ask Me nothing.” Until the resurrection life of Jesus is fully exhibited in you, you have questions about many things. Then after a while you find that all your questions are gone— you don’t seem to have any left to ask. You have come to the point of total reliance on the resurrection life of Jesus, which brings you into complete oneness with the purpose of God. Are you living that life now? If not, why aren’t you? “In that day” there may be any number of things still hidden to your understanding, but they will not come between your heart and God. “In that day you will ask Me nothing”— you will not need to ask, because you will be certain that God will reveal things in accordance with His will. The faith and peace of John 14:1 has become the real attitude of your heart, and there are no more questions to be asked. If anything is a mystery to you and is coming between you and God, never look for the explanation in your mind, but look for it in your spirit, your true inner nature— that is where the problem is. Once your inner spiritual nature is willing to submit to the life of Jesus, your understanding will be perfectly clear, and you will come to the place where there is no distance between the Father and you, His child, because the Lord has made you one. “In that day you will ask Me nothing.”

ndia is almost ready to implement a unified indirect tax, GST. The businesses are likely to benefit but it needs many more steps to create one market. The growth will spur as many other taxes and tolls need to be re-jigged. The nation has also to think of ending many other levies, which not only add to inflation but also impedes progress. It needs to do away with income-tax, profession tax that many states levy, have a relook at highway toll and municipal tolls. These are not only inflationary, these reduce the individual’s capacity to purchase (spend) that impacts overall growth of the country. It is said more the levies, more the corrupt practices and other indirect costs on business and individuals. The cost of all road projects is being borne either by the central government or by the CRF. The toll thus becomes redundant. According to one statement made by an NHAI, the toll collections are done through agents and almost 30 percent collections remain unaccounted.

The businesses and individuals find it oppressive as it empowers authorities to harass them, many say for reasons other than collecting the tax. Why should we have exorbitant highway tolls when even non-highway users are levied heavy road cess on petrol and diesel? In 2015-16, the government’s Central Road Fund (CRF) collected Rs 69,809 crore in 2015-16 and Rs 54787.21 crore from 2012 to 2015. The CAG noted burdening users of Rs 28361 crore while providing benefits to private parties by fixing a longer concession period. The audit covered 94 projects or 45 percent of the total 407 BOT projects as on March 31, 2012. The CAG said the NHAI failed to fulfill the role assigned to it by the government and provided undue benefits to R-Infra, L&T and IRB. The recent Supreme Court order stopping toll and ordering CAG audit exposed the viciousness of the tolls. Approximately Rs300 crore more was realized through user fee or toll between 1 April 2014 and 30 September 2016. This is the virtual truth of all BOT roads which are allowed to collect toll Shivaji for 30 years. The SC in case of DND said that could not be allowed. The CAG found that R-Infra collected Rs 662 crore as toll on two projects of 6-laning of highways and allegedly invested Rs 303 crore of it in its own mutual funds even before commencement of work. Besides, nowhere in the world a highway like the Agra-Delhi is repeatedly subjected to “widening/improvement”. It has thrown traffic out of gear, causing severe delays and making the traffic highly unsafe and ecology fragile. No cost analysis of such act has been made but it would be enormous. The Central Road Fund created in 2000 collects Rs 2 per litre on petrol and diesel. Of this, Rs 1.5 is allocated. Almost 10 percent of CRF is not spent. The fund is allocated for rural roads (PMGSY), highway development, construction of state roads, under or over bridges and
safety works at railway crossings. The national highways (NHAI) in 201314 got the bulk of its expenses at Rs 9882 crore. In 2016-17, the NHAI got Rs 14976 crore for investment in Sarkar highways, as per budget statement. It did not invest any extra. So where did the toll money go? The NHAI collected toll of Rs 3446.87 crore in 2013-14; Rs 4179.30 crore in 2014-15; Rs 4937.48 crore in 2015-16; and Rs 3992.93 crore in 2016-17. While as per central budget its investment from its kitty was nil, it shared revenue with BOT operators at Rs 1848 crore, 1790 crore, 1825 crore and 1135 crore in the respective years. On an average it shared 40 to 60 percent of its toll collections with private operators. This is a major question that NHAI needs to clarify. It also needs to come out with a white paper what it has been doing with the money parked with it. By simple logic it appears that while road users are being extorted, NHAI is not making investments on its own. The toll by simple calculation appears to be an extra income, which it is liberally sharing with the
private operators causing enormous problems of delay, mismanagement, brawls at toll gates and other law and order issues. It is also interesting to note that the cost for security and law and order is being borne by the state governments. Apparently, the cost of all road projects is being borne either by the central government or by the CRF. The toll thus becomes redundant. According to one statement made by an NHAI, the toll collections are done through agents and almost 30 percent collections remain unaccounted. Entire issue of toll thus has become suspect. Apparently, unless the NHAI comes out clean on toll collection and its expenses, it must be stopped. Sharing it with operators cannot be considered an expense. It appears to be largesse and profiteering. The method as has come out of the CAG audit is a legacy of the past governments. The NDA has to go deeper into it and look for how this toll can be eliminated for faster movement and inviting people also for tourism. Presently, one finds that people use their private vehicles only for short distance travel
and not much for tourism. The toll is thus hampering growth of other sectors. The former CAG Vinod Rai pointed out how lackadaisical is the method of NHAI. He commented, “There have been instances where the estimated traffic projections (of vehicles plying on highways) go haywire”. He did not say it is deliberate but could it not be? The truckers across the country pleaded for abolition of toll gates and even agreed to pay one-time annual toll amount to end hampering of the movement drastically. It fell into deaf ears. This needs to be probed. The toll is redundant, the statistics indicate. The reluctance of NHAI in removing it remains a mystery. The NDA government has to take a call on this usurious practice. As it is now being fully funded by CRF and central budget, the elimination of toll and private operators would come as a great boost to the economy, the government revenue as well as faster integration to one market. Sooner it is done the higher kudos it would earn for the pro-people government of prime minister Narendra Modi.

Reflections on the Concept of village/ward adoption committee: Government schools’ HSLC result an ingenious model for development
T
(A DIPR Feature by Mhonlumi Patton, APRO)
o usher in all-round development at grass root level, the role of the highest planning body in the District/State and the active participation of the grass root people need to be taken into account. This idea is incorporated in the concept of Village/ Ward Adoption Committee undertaken by the Kohima District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), and this novel initiative has been featured in “New Beginning,” a book on innovations for the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence, released by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on 21st April, 2017. It was in the year 2010 that the Kohima DPDB brought out a concept known as Village Adoption Programme which was re-christened as DPDB Village/Ward Adoption Committee in 2014. Initially, it was conceptualized with the name/ term “Village Vision Cell” under the theme “Back to the Root,” by involving people from all walks of life including retired Government servants/officers, politicians, social workers and other intellectuals. A group of responsible people from a particular village forms a team called Village Vision Cell (VVC), who collectively coordinates with village leaders to improve the system of village level governance and to submit its vision and plans to the Kohima DPDB. The DPDB members are grouped into 6 DPDB Village/Ward Adoption Committees consisting of 9-10 officers and it has set up a Core Committee headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner HQ to evaluate the works of the 6 (six) committees annually. Each Committee is assigned a village or a ward, as the case maybe, to adopt and study the Village/Ward in detail, to ascertain the status of Government programmes, to locate lacunae and suggest measures to be taken. They also help to design and implement innovative programmes of the Committee in the Village/ Ward, and finally, a detailed report on the Village/Ward is presented to the DPDB. Initially, an amount of Rs. 50,000/- was given from the Local Area Development Program Common Pool to each of the Committee, which was increased to Rs. 1,00,000/in 2015. In 2016, it was further
raised to Rs. 1,50,000/- in view of the positive impact of the programme on the adopted Villages/Wards and popular public demand. The amount so sanctioned is being used by the Committees for various expenses. Till date, 20 (Twenty) villages in rural areas and 8 (Eight) wards in urban sectors have been covered under this Village/Ward Adoption Programme by the Kohima DPDB. Yearly competitions are also held to choose the Best Adoption Committee. Objectives/Goals: To identify the needs of the villages, be it in economy, education, social, health and sanitation and assist them by using locally available resources. To create awareness of the activities of the DPDB. To develop cooperation and understanding and to inculcate team spirit amongst the member department for achieving synergy. To study the strength and weaknesses of the Village/ Ward by gathering information on implementation of various Government schemes e.g. education, health, water supply and sanitation, power, forest conservation area, transport and communication system etc. To address and to propagate the best practices of a Village/Ward to other parts of the district. Village/Ward Adoption A unique opportunity: Bringing perceptible improvements in process/systems and building institutions. Making public delivery systems responsive, transparent and efficient, particularly by leveraging technology. The activities also spread awareness about various schemes available for development to both administrative departments and citizens. Optimal utilization of resources is made possible due to coordinated efforts through the Adoption Committees. Departments are able to get work done, which hitherto were not possible or difficult, through community participation such as removal of encroachments, widening of roads where private lands had to be touched, etc. Preparedness/performance in emergent situations, disasters like cyclones, earth-
quakes, floods, etc. Through the report of Ward Adoption Committee in 2014, a number of old and dangerously corroded electrical poles were identified and replaced, such as in North Block ward, by the Power Department. Also, removal of carelessly dumped distribution pipes at Porterlane in 2014 and implementation of compulsory septic tanks for houses were carried out by the KMC and Urban Development. Problems and hurdles faced: Lack of authority to take larger decisions. Insufficiency of funds. Insufficient time. High expectation of the villagers/ward members: As with any Government developmental programme, there is usually a very high expectation of the adopted Village/Ward from the Adoption Committee, and not being able to meet these expectations is a major reason for disappointment. However, if sufficient funds are placed at the disposal of the Committees, perhaps it would help to a large extent. Suggestions and ways forward: It would be beneficial if budget provisions can be kept aside for the Committees to work on by every department similar in line with that of IT policy of the State wherein, every department is required to set aside 3% of its planned budget for Information Technology All convergence programmes, particularly for the adopted Village/Ward, may be brought under the ambit of the Adoption Committee on trail basis for at least 3 years and thereafter, make it a permanent feature if it is successful. Conclusion: This model of “Bottoms Up” approach to planning and reporting has proved to be successful and beneficial, as is seen in the case of Kohima DPDB. As rightly said by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, “Innovation is no longer a choice but has become an imperative,” such models need to be emulated in other districts so as to fulfil the basic and priority needs of the local populace and also to bridge the vital gap between the Government and the grass root society. (From previous issue) The worst is mixing politics with education. Professionally, pre-trained candidates continue to remain jobless as backdoor appointments continue to hijack the system. Many keep proxy after appointment, apparently their joining of Education Department is not more than bread and butter purpose. Teaching is a noble profession and not only about earning a livelihood. One has to have a CALLING and passion. The department had a lot of expectations from student leaders. Nagas are to dwell in the same old ground for another 10-20 years should we remain as we are. Our local students’ union, area students’ union, respective tribal students’ bodies and the NSF should practically join hands with SMCs by taking lead role and not just a side back-up or verbal support on social media. If schools have only proxy teachers teaching the children with original teacher out of sight, the Government may like to downgrade it to the NO GOVERNMENT TEACHER SCHOOLS but it would affect children’s right of free and compulsory education. What is stopping the SMCs and Government to act on legal document as a base for proxy control? All teachers have signed a statement in an affidavit few years back as directed by Government. That was actually a good strategy of the department and therefore it would be an important tool to streamline the system if affidavit exercise was done for a purpose. Secondly, introduction of biometric attendance of teachers may be considered another option to keep proxy at bay. Thirdly, we have a good number of proxy keeping teachers that is either the wives or children of influential people. I would say that they should be grateful to God that they have everything in life and not that their survival is dependent on the teacher’s salary shared with proxy. Our most respected state VIPs, Government officers, UGs and leaders could set an outstanding example by opting for voluntary retirement for their loved ones and pave the way for pre-trained unemployed youths lying in stagnation who are ready to
teach on war footing. Fourthly, we are assured of better academic result if SMCs and student bodies cooperate with department and stand as a pillar of strength. Should we say Communitization Act is a total failure because communitizing the schools didn’t bear fruit in the last 15 years? If all SMCs were faithful partners of the Education department, solution to proxy tradition should have been much better and we would be getting better result today. A child of Class I in 2002 (Communitized year) passed his/her matriculation in 2013. Students of Class I in 2006 appeared HSLC this year and we have seen the results just few weeks back. If Community Empowerment doesn’t work, what is it do we think could bring about salvation? Government on its part should also own responsibility for those schools with shortages of teachers especially for subjects like Science and Mathematics in High Schools. Delayed distribution of text books for elementary and primary sections seriously hampers academic exercise because students’ performances are evaluated strictly according to 3 quarters as per the CCE pattern. The department should stop relaxation policy and recruit only those professional diploma/degree holders in education at least by now. If someone is pre-trained, it should be understood that he/she is definitely interested and ready to teach hence, a double edged sword. I saw a beautiful quote somewhere that says “India is not developed because it employs the RESERVED ONES whereas, America is developed because it offers job to DESERVED ONES”. On the other hand, no one can take the place of students if they don’t invest hard work and the role of parents is no exception. Everyone should own responsibility without shifting responsibility. Quality education and quality result is a joint responsibility of teachers, learners, parents, Education Department, SMCs and students’ unions. Success or failure of a student should be viewed from all the angles. (Concluded) Vikali Shikhu, Unity Village, Dimapur

Sir,
Need for more supervision
The traffic congestion that take place near the dhobi nullah junction during peak hours need to be addressed. The stranded vehicles on the road go right upto the Signal Bosti junction and towards the Holy Cross area mostly during the afternoon hours. The traffic police are also harassed especially when vehicles try to overtake in spaces where one can hardly squeeze through. There is a need for more traffic traffic personnel to supervise and check the unruly vehicles. Come school break hours the chaos is unbearable especially during such humid climate. Permanent solution for Kashmir soon, says Rajnath
New Delhi, May 28 (IANS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday asserted that the BJP-led NDA government has found a “permanent solution” to the vexed Kashmir issue but there would be no compromise on the territorial integrity of India. The Minister also ruled out inviting separatist groups for talks on Kashmir and said whoever wanted to talk “development and peace” was welcome. “We have come up with a permanent solution to solve Kashmir. The initiative has begun. We are moving forward,” Rajnath Singh said. He was replying to a question from IANS while talking to a group of journalists on the sidelines of a BJP function to highlight achievements of the three years of the NDA government. The Minister, however, refused to elaborate on what kind of solution the BJP government has found for Jammu and Kashmir, which is battling nearly
Rajnath Singh three decades of a violent separatist campaign. Pressed further if the solution was “political in nature”, Rajnath Singh said: “It is too early to discuss it in public. I don’t want to discuss it with the media.” Asked about the possibility of talks with Hurriyat leaders, the Minister said the government was ready for talks with all stakeholders but there would be no invitations to individuals or organisations. “We have never said no to talks. I went there (Kashmir) last year and stayed for three days for talks with all stakeholders. Those who
Need to make India defence manufacturing hub: Jaitley
Arun Jaitley PUNE, MAY 28 (AGENCIES): Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday batted for making India a defence manufacturing hub, saying it is essential to deal with various security challenges like insurgency effectively. No country can secure itself by depending on others for its defence supplies, the minister said amid steps by the government to bring in private players in the sector. “We cannot change our neighbours. And our neighbourhood has thrown up security challenges. We are facing insurgency and war for the last 70 years. Therefore, India needs to become an important defence manu-
facturing hub,” he said at the 9th convocation of the Defence Institute of Advance Technology (DIAT). “If the economy requires us to become a manufacturing hub, then security requires us to become a hub for defence manufacturing. This is the area where the country will have to use the vast resources it possesses. “We will have to use the large number of academic institutions we have for training minds and cover up the critical gap that still exists,” Jaitley said. The country has institutions like IITs, DRDO labs and a large number of private institutes which can help it achieve the goal, the minister said. In a veiled attack on the previous UPA government, he said the “conservative policies” of the past have hindered progress in the field of defence manufacturing. “But the new India is a more confident India, it is not the defensive India. It is India, which is willing to globally integrate, share knowledge, get knowledge from outside,” he said.
Noida girl tops CBSE 12th exam
Raksha Gopal Noida, may 28 (Agencies): As per available information Raksha Gopal of Noida’s Amity International School topped the CBSE with 99.6 percent. Bhumika Sawant of Chandigarh closely followed with 99.4 percent marks. However, the overall pass percentage this year dipped slightly to 82 percent from 83.05 percent last year. The CBSE 12th result 2017 declaration means closure for lakhs for students and their parents who have been awaiting the results for some time now. They come after the government’s controversial announcement - following the exams - that it would scrap the marks moderation policy. Last week, the Delhi HC voided the decision, saying the CBSE should reinstate the policy this year - a ruling that appeared to have delayed the results declaration date a bit. According to the marks moderation policy, marks of students, who are believed to have been given an easier set of question papers during the exams, are revised higher. There is a grace marks system within it too, with which scores of students whose marks are just below the passing line are pushed above. Following the Delhi HC verdict, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has gone on record to say that while the CBSE will not spike marks for high scorers, it would continue to give grace marks for 12th Result 2017 and 10th Result 2017. CBSE Class 10th Result 2017 is expected to come out on June 2. This year, nearly 11 lakh students appeared for the CBSE 12th exams while close to 9 lakh students appeared for the 10th exams.
wanted to talk came forward. Even (Chief Minister) Mehbooba Mufti had written a letter of invitation to separatists, but...” Rajnath Singh said Kashmir had indeed been a challenge for the government but refused to accept Opposition claims that the PDP-BJP ruling combine in the state was responsible for it. “Kashmir has been burning and the problem is decades old,” he said. Rajnath Singh attributed recurring street unrest, increasing number of stone-pelting protests and heightened militancy related incidents to radicalisation of youth in the Kashmir Valley. “Radicalisation is a global phenomena. We are aware of it and we will tackle it.” Asked if the central government was satisfied with the way the state administration was handling the situation in the wake of fresh trouble, the Minister said: “There is no reason to be unhappy about it.” The Kashmir Valley has been on the boil since the
April 9 Lok Sabha polls for the Srinagar parliamentary constituency when eight civilian protesters were killed in firing by security forces guarding voting stations. The gunning down on Saturday of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Bhat has triggered widespread protests once again. Bhat was a close aide of militant ‘poster boy’ Burhan Wani, whose death last year led to months of violent unrest that left some 100 civilians dead. A top BJP leader at the function said Bhat’s “fate was written” when he picked up the gun to fight security forces and it was true about anyone who resorts to violence. “Whoever picks arms, will be killed. They will have to die,” the BJP leader said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The BJP leader, who is also a top policy maker for the party, ruled out the possibility of talks with separatist leaders at a time when the valley was burning.
NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (AGENCIES): After a video of two women being molested by a group of men+ in broad daylight in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district shocked people earlier today, Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan fanned the controversy by saying girls should avoid places where they may be molested. “Ladkiyon ko bhi aisi jagahon par nahi jaana chahiye jahan besharmi ka nanga naach hota hai (Girls should not visit places where they can be targeted by shameless people),” the Rampur MLA remarked. In the video, around 12 to 14 youths can be seen manhandling the women, even as they pleaded to let them go. The perpetrators filmed the entire episode and posted it on social media. Holding the Yogi Adityanath-led government responsible for the “growing lawlessness” in the state, Azam Khan claimed that crimes like rape, murder and dacoity were becoming increasingly commonplace.

Naidu, Kejriwal inaugurate Heritage Line of Delhi Metro
Venkaiah Naidu and Arvind Kejriwal flagging off the Delhi Metro. ArrayNew Delhi, May 28 (IANS): Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday flagged off the much-awaited Heritage Line of the Delhi Metro through video-conferencing at the Metro Bhavan here. An extension of the Violet Line (ITO-Escort Mujeser), the 5.17-km heritage corridor comprises four stations -- Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Lal Qila, and Kashmere Gate. “I want to congratulate the people of Delhi that they are getting the Heritage
Line that passes near several historical monuments. It is a day of happiness for the people of Delhi,” Kejriwal said. He also praised Delhi Metro officials for completing the task despite hurdles. “The area from where this heritage track passes is very congested and several historical monuments are situated along the route. Engineers and other staff of Delhi Metro have done a great job,” Kejriwal said. Union Science Minister Harsh Vardhan was also present on the occasion. According to Delhi Metro officials, the stretch
was thrown open to the public two hours after its inauguration. Beset by delays, the stretch missed a number of deadlines, and was expected to open to the public last year. Metro officials attributed the delays to difficulties during construction on vulnerable stretches. Procurement of land and exodus of labour immediately after demonetisation were also cited as issues that slowed the pace of the Heritage Line construction. Janpath, Mandi House and ITO stations on this line are already in operation.

Listing out the government’s high points during 2016-17, Shah said, there were many like “highest urea production, largest gas connection distribution, record coal and power production, highest national highway and rural road construction, vehicle manufacturing, biggest ever software export and highest ever forex reserve”. He further said that interest rates have been reduced remarkably and fiscal deficit has been reined in at 3.9 per cent in 2015-16.

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on March 20 had stated that the cost of production of natural gas in the prolific Krishna Godavari basin is between $4.99 per mmBtu and $7.30 per mmBtu. The same for other basins is in the range of $3.80 per mmBtu to $6.59 per mmBtu, he had said, adding the production costs of companies vary from field to field depending upon size of the reservoir, location, logistics and availability of surface facilities. ONGC is the country’s biggest gas producer, accounting for some 80 per cent of the 70 million standard cubic meters per day current output.

While IOC Chairman B Ashok attributed the profit growth to higher refining margins, inventory gains and operational efficiencies, ONGC Chairman and Managing Director Dinesh K Sarraf said the company lost Rs 3,000 crore in net profit due to government’s natural gas pricing policy that has made the business economically unviable. The BJP-led government had in October 2014 evolved a new pricing formula using rates prevalent in gas surplus nations like the US, Canada and Russia to determine rates in a net importing country. Prices have halved to $2.48 per million British thermal unit since the formula was implemented. Sarraf said the company lost Rs 5,010 crore in revenue on natural gas

HRD Ministry not to intervene in CBSE marks row New Delhi, MAY 28 (AGENCIES): The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry will not intervene in the moderation policy row, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Sunday. Any “change” should not be “abruptly” implemented in the middle of an academic session, he added. Moderation policy refers to a practice in which students get extra marks in subjects regarded ‘unusually difficult’, or if there have been differences in the sets of question papers. “We will not intervene in the moderation policy issue. It is an academic call which the boards need to take,” Javadekar told PTI in an interview. The HRD Minister’s comments came against the backdrop of an order by the Delhi High Court directing the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to continue with the moderation policy, which was scrapped last month after the CBSE, along with 32 other boards, formed a consensus on the issue.
Impose PR rule if J&K is to be saved: Farooq Abdullah SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (AGENCIES): Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Sunday called for the immediate imposition of Governor’s rule in the state, stressing that it was the only way to control communal tension in the country. “We have never been promoters of Governor’s rule; we have always opposed it. But there is no other way,” Abdullah, the newly-elected Member of Parliament from Srinagar, told PTI. The National Conference chief, who was recently called to New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a discussion on Kashmir, said Modi wanted a “peaceful end” to the situation in the state, reeling under unrest for months. “I can’t tell you what I discussed with the Prime Minister. Dialogue only after stonepelting ends: Amit Shah
BJP president Amit Shah has ruled out dialogue on the Kashmir issue until stone-pelting ends, but insisted that the government will talk to everyone once violence ends.

Asked if the government will speak to the Hurriyat (separatists) too as was done by the previous NDA government, he told PTI, “Once violence ends and an atmosphere of dialogue is created, we will talk to every one.” The Agenda of Alliance sealed by the BJP and the PDP before they formed the government in the state talks about holding dialogue with all internal stakeholders. “We have said that we will start dialogue once stone- pelting stops. As long as there is stone-pelting, there cannot be dialogue. We cannot give them flower if they pelt stones. They will have to understand it,” he said. Asked if he was satisfied with the performance of the state government, in which the BJP is a junior partner to the PDP, he said it had done very good work on developing infrastructure and succeeded in bringing development to far- flung areas which, he added, had been connected in a strategic way.

23000 jihadist suspects identified in UK London, May 28 (PTI): Nearly 23,000 terror suspects may be at large across Britain, the country’s intelligence community say after the deadly Manchester attack by a Libyan-origin man who was on the radar of the UK’s spy agencies. The scale of the challenge has emerged in the aftermath of the Manchester suicide bombing that claimed 22 lives and injured 119 others. Reports that Libyan-origin Salman Abedi had been on the radar of intelligence services had added pressure on MI5 to reveal what they knew. Now gover nment sources have told sections of the UK media that they believe 23,000 people with extremist tendencies are living in the UK. About 3,000 people from the total group are judged to pose a threat and are under investigation or active monitoring in 500 operations being run by police and intelligence services. The 20,000 others have featured in previous inquiries and are categorised as posing a “residual risk”. Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Police have released CCTV images showing suicide bomber Abedi on the night he attacked Man-
the run up to this terrible event and to understand if more people were involved in planning this attack.” The UK’s terror threat level had been lowered to “severe” from “critical” yesterday as a result of the arrests, which means an attack is still highly likely if not imminent.

chester Arena at the end of an Ariana Grande concert. The images are the first to show what the 22-year-old looked like when he carried out the deadly terror attack. Fourteen locations are still being searched in connection with the attack and 11 men remain in custody on suspicion of terror offences. A Greater Manchester Police statement said: “We have made significant progress in this fast moving and complex investigation,
working with the national counter terrorism policing network and UK intelligence partners and securing the arrests of 11 people who remain in custody. “The level of resources we have available to us remains the same as we continue to take positive action so you will notice additional officers, including armed officers, on patrol especially at a number of events this weekend to ensure the security and safety of everyone but it’s impor-
Libya jihadist group Ansar al-Sharia announces dissolution T rip o li , M ay 2 8 (Agencies): The Libyan jihadist group Ansar alSharia, which is linked to Al-Qaeda and deemed a terrorist organisation by the UN and United States, has announced its “dissolution” in a communique published online. Washington accuses the group of being behind the 11, 2012 attack on the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi in which ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed.
Ansar al-Sharia is one of the jihadist groups that sprung up in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, in the chaos following the death of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011. They overran the city in 2014. East Libyan military strongman Khalifa Haftar earlier this month launched an offensive to oust jihadist fighters from their two remaining strongholds in Benghazi. In its communique Ansar al-Sharia yesterday said it had been “weak-
ened” by the fighting. The group lost its leader, Mohammed Azahawi, in clashes with Haftar’s forces in Benghazi at the end of 2014. Most of its members then defected to the socalled Islamic State group. Ansar al-Sharia later joined the Revolutionary Shura Council of Benghazi, a local alliance of Islamist militias. At its zenith, Ansar al-Sharia was present in Benghazi and Derna in eastern Syria, with offshoots in Sirte and Sabratha, western Libya.
tant that people remain alert and vigilant.” They have made an appeal to the public for information about the bomber’s movements since 18 May, when he returned to the UK from Libya. A joint statement from Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins and Neil Basu, Scotland Yard’s senior national co-ordinator from UK Counter Terrorism Policing, added: “This is still a live investigation which is not slowing down. “Our priorities are to understand
Russia, Turkey reaffirm commitment to deepen partnership Moscow, May 28 (Agencies): Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated mutual commitment on Saturday to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries, the Kremlin said. During a phone conversation, the two leaders talked about the mutual cancellation of trade restrictions imposed after Turkey downed a Russian jet near the Turkish-Syrian border in November 2015, the Xinhua reported. As for the Syrian conflicts, the two leaders underscored the importance of the Memorandum on Deescalation Zones in Syria and they agreed to step up the coordination of efforts on these issues at different levels. Russian-Turkish relations have been recovering since Erdogan apologized in June 2016 to Putin for the downing of the Russian aircraft.
10,000 migrants rescued off Libya coast in four days Rome, May 28 (PTI): More than 3,400 migrants were rescued off the coast of Libya on Saturday, bringing to about 10,000 the total number rescued over four days, according to Libyan and Italian officials. At least 10 bodies were also found by the Italian coastguard, officials said. No vessels were reported in distress on Saturday. Yesterday, more than 1,200 migrants were rescued by Libyan ships and taken to Tripoli or Zawiya, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) west, while the Italian coastguard and commercial boats rescued 2,200 others and took them to Italy. Migrants were still disembarking in southern Italy today. Another 6,400 were picked up between Tuesday and Thursday, but at least 35 people drowned on Wednes-

Trump keeps world waiting on Paris deal Paris, May 28 (Agencies): Donald Trump has said he will decide whether to pull out of a key climate change deal in the next week, having apparently shrugged off pressure from US allies in recent days. The US president tweeted he would make his “final decision” on the Paris accord after his return to Washington. Trump left the G7 summit in Sicily on Saturday without reaffirming his commitment to the accord, unlike the other six world leaders in attendance. He previously threatened to pull out. Mr Trump, who has called climate change “a hoax” on occasion, has reportedly indicated this is still his position to key members of his inner circle.
The uncertainty over his position on the Paris agreement puts him at odds with other members of the G7. The Paris deal is the world’s first comprehensive climate agreement, set out in 2015, with the aim of keeping the global average rise in temperatures below 2C. In order to do that, countries pledged to reduce their carbon emissions. But it came into force only after being ratified by 55 countries, which between them produce 55% of global carbon emissions. Barack Obama signed the US up in September 2016, and members of the G7 are keen for the US to continue to back it, not least because the country is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gasses after China.

help out. More than 50,000 migrants have reached the Italian coast since the start of the year, not counting those rescued in recent days, while more than 1,400 have drowned or are missing, according to UN figures.

Greater Manchester police have released images showing suicide bomber Salman Abedi on Monday night, taken shortly before he detonated a bomb at Manchester Arena killing 22 persons. The images released on Saturday night show Abedi wearing a baseball hat and a dark jacket during the concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande, Xinhua news agency reported. The police hope the release to the public of the images taken from closed circuit (CCTV) cameras may help trace more witnesses who spotted the terrorist before his deadly mission that also left 116 others injured. The police have appealed to anybody with information about Abedi from May 18 to contact them.

Pyongyang urges Seoul to cancel THAAD deployment Pyongyang, May 28 (IANS): North Korea has urged South Korea to cancel the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system by the US, the media reported on Sunday. People from all walks of life in South Korea were increasingly demanding the cancellation of THAAD deployment, a spokesman for the National Peace Committee of Korea said. “To deploy THAAD or to withdraw it would serve as a cornerstone discerning the acts of sycophancy towards outsiders from the stand of prioritising the nation, and there should be no compromise here,” he said. Pak nuke tests created balance of power in region, says Sharif Islamabad, May 28 (PTI): Nuclear tests conducted by Pakistan in 1998 created a balance of power in South Asia and gave a strong message to the “enemies” that aggressors would meet an exemplary fate, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Sunday. Sharif, in his message to commemorate the historic nuclear tests, said that the day was an unforgettable day for Pakistan. “Pakistan’s nuclear programme created balance of power in South Asia, just becoming a symbol of peace as the smaller states in the region also heaved a sigh of relief,” he said. The Prime Minister said that after becoming a nuclear power, now was the time to make the country an economic power, Associated Press of Pakistan reported. “Nineteen years ago, we had made country’s defence as impregnable. Today, with same dedication and passion, the country’s economy is also being made strong and stable. In this age, the defence of any nation cannot be separated from its economic stability,” he said. Sharif said the jour-

ney of national economic development was going on with fast pace and “just like nuclear explosion, Pakistan will also carry out an economic explosion. The whole world believed in such possibilities,” he said. The nuclear tests also gave a strong message to the “enemies” that aggressors against Pakistan would meet an exemplary fate. He said some 19 years ago, when the Pakistan Muslim League government decided to carry out nuclear tests, it had been facing numerous challenges. “The nation is also thankful to the personalities who showed bravery at that time and played their role to make Pakistan an atomic power,” he said.
No ‘unsafe’ intercepting of US plane: China Beijing, May 28 (PTI): Accusing the Pentagon of distorting facts, China today denied its charge that an encounter between Chinese fighter jets and an American surveillance plane over the South China Sea was “unsafe and unprofessional”. Chinese J-10 fighter planes intercepted a US Navy P-3 Orion operating in international airspace over the South China Sea, the Pentagon had claimed. The US termed the move as “unsafe and unprofessional” and said that it would convey its concerns to the Chinese government. However, Chinese defence ministry in a statement said the US account of the incident “was not in accordance with the facts”. “On May 25, a US patrol plane carried out reconnaissance activities in the airspace south-east of Hong Kong, China,” it said in a statement on its website. “The Chinese military aircraft carried out identification in accordance with law. The operations were professional and safe,” it said.
Petition in Pakistan SC seeks immediate execution of Jadhav Islamabad, May 28 (PTI): A petition has been filed in Pakistan’s Supreme Court seeking immediate execution of Indian prisoner on death row Kulbhushan Jadhav if he failed to get his capital punishment overturned. Muzamil Ali, a lawyer by profession, filed the petition yesterday through Advocate Farooq Naek – a leader of opposition Pakistan People’s Party and former Senate chairman. The petition asked the apex court to order the federal government to ensure an early decision under the domestic laws on any pending appeal by 46-year-old Jadhav. The petitioner requested the Supreme Court to order the immediate execution of the Indian spy if he failed to get his capital punishment overturned, Dawn reported today. Pakistan claims its security forces had arrested Jadhav from the restive Balochistan province on March 3 last year after he reportedly entered from Iran. A Pakistan military court had awarded the death sentence to Jadhav for espionage and subversive activities. However, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), through an interim ruling, stayed Jadhav’s execution

till the time the case pending with it reached its logical end. The petitioner also requested the court to declare that Jadhav’s trial had been conducted in accordance with the law, that due process had been observed and that he had had consular access as was demanded by India. The federal government, through the secretaries of interior and law, and the court of appeal constituted under the Pakistan Army Act (PPA) 1952, General Headquarters Rawalpindi, were named the respondents in the case. The petition mentioned that Jadhav’s mother had moved an appeal on April 26 under Sections 131 and 133(b) of the PPA. According to Section 131, any person who considers himself aggrieved by the sentence of a court martial may submit a petition to the
federal government or the chief of the army staff. Section 133(b) says that any person to whom a court martial has awarded a sentence of death or imprisonment for life may, within 40 days from the date of announcement of the sentence, can submit an appeal. The petitioner argued that the people of Pakistan had a right of retribution against those who carried out subversive activities against their country, and that this right far outweighed the requirement to provide an information dissemination method to a convicted terrorist. It also said that the conduct of India, its arguments and representation in the ICJ constituted a repudiatory breach of the 2008 agreement as well as the VCCR, and as such, Pakistan was not bound by the terms of the convention.

SL steps up relief as monsoon toll exceeds 150
COLOMBO, May 28 (Agencies): Emergency teams rushed food and water on Sunday to half a million Sri Lankans displaced by the island’s worst flooding for more than a decade, as the death toll climbed to 151. Government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said relief operations had intensified following a break in the monsoon rains, with medical teams reinforcing hospitals in affected districts. The official death toll had climbed to 151 with 111 people still listed as missing, Senaratne said. Another 95 were in hospital. “Aid is now getting into the remotest areas which remained inaccessible in the past two days,” Senaratne told reporters, adding there were help lines people could call if they needed assistance. Most victims were killed by landslides, not the flood waters, as their homes on hillsides were buried under torrents of mud and rock. Nearly 2,000 houses were damaged or destroyed. Almost half a million people had been forced from their homes and were sheltering in gov-

ernment buildings or with friends and relatives. The floods and landslides in the south and west of the island were the worst for 14 years. Water levels in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka’s gem district east of Colombo, had subsided but many villages in Kalutara south of the capital were still under water, officials said. Residents in the south of the island also face the threat of crocodile attacks
after a river known for its dangerous wildlife burst its banks overnight. The charity Save the Children said about a tenth of those displaced were aged below five. It raised fears of stagnant floodwater becoming breeding grounds for denguespreading mosquitos and noted that young children were more vulnerable. Medical teams were sent to the worst-hit areas to help prevent an outbreak of
waterborne diseases. “We have the expertise to deal with this situation,” Senaratne said, adding cholera and diarrhoea had been successfully prevented in past floods. The government withdrew an evacuation order for thousands of residents in the southern district of Matara as water levels subsided.
India Ships Aid
The military has de-
ployed helicopters, boats and amphibious vehicles to distribute aid pouring in from residents in areas unaffected by the floods. The government appealed for bottled water, new clothes and dry rations for those displaced. Sri Lanka has also sought international assistance, with India rushing a second naval ship laden with supplies. The navy vessel Shardul called at Colombo on Sunday with a large consignment of medicines, inflatable boats and medical teams to join the relief operations. The United Nations said it would donate water containers, water purification tablets and tarpaulin sheets while the World Health Organization will support medical teams in affected areas. Pakistan said it was in talks with Colombo to send relief supplies. Islamabad recently gave 10,000 tonnes of rice to Sri Lanka to help drought victims. The meteorological department said the rains ended a prolonged drought that had threatened agriculture as well as hydropower generation.

Israelis rally for Palestinian state, end of occupation T e l Av i v, M ay 2 8 (Agencies): Thousands of Israelis rallied on Saturday in Tel Aviv in support of a Palestinian state ahead of the 50th anniversary of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land. Banners bearing the slogan “Two states, One Hope” featured in the demonstration organised by supporters of a Palestinian state, including the Israeli NGO Peace Now. NGO head Avi Buskila said the rally was a protest against “the lack of hope being offered by a government perpetuating occupation, violence and racism. “The time has come to prove to the Israelis, the Palestinians and the entire world that an important segment of the Israeli population is opposed to occupation and wants a two-state solution,” he added. A message of support from Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas was read out at the rally. “It is time to live together in harmony, security and stability,” Abbas was quoted as saying. “Our duty toward future generations is

to conclude a peace of the brave.” Israeli opposition Labour party leader Isaac Herzog attended the rally and threw his support behind a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In 1967, Israel seized the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan during the Six-Day War with neighbouring states. It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the international community. Israel proclaims Jerusalem as its united capital,
while the Palestinians claim the city’s eastern part as the capital of their future state. More than 400 000 Israelis live in settlements on the West Bank which is considered illegal under international law and a major obstacle to Middle East peace. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is widely seen as the most right-wing administration in Israeli history and is pressing settlement expansion despite international concern.

We believe everything that happens in our lives is pre-planned by God and not an accident or incident. God always uses something/someone as his instrument in fulfilling his plans and purposes. In our lives, God used Withee Bible College through our most humble President- Rev. Dr. Vikheshe Chishi, that through whom as privileged and deserved candidates we are here with full scholarship studying in one of the most prestigious universities in the world (ACTS/AIGS, South Korea) Accredited by Asia Theological Association (ATA). Words cannot express how much we thank Withee Bible College and our FounderRev. Dr. Vikheshe Chishi who is also an alumni of ACTS (1999-2001), who was then one of the best students, and unlike others had an opportunity to be the Professor of ACTS University in 2011-2012. Since then, under special umbrella ACTS University and Withee Bible College had a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for five years and we are here under this special package. Our heartfelt gratitude to our Principal, Rev. Dr. Vikheshe Chishi who paved the way for our higher studies. Honestly, under this privilege he could have done partiality to send his own children who were all by then well qualified but we are the signs of his impartiality. Our prayer is that may we have many testimony leaders like you Sir and also hats off to all the faculty of Withee Bible College for your unconditional sacrifices (we truly love you). PSG crowned French Cup champions for 11th time
Defender Maxwell lifts the French Cup after Paris Saint-Germain defeat Angers 1-0 in Paris. SAINT-DENIS, May 28 (Agencies): Paris St Germain’s dominance in the domestic cup competitions continued on Saturday after they captured a record 11th French Cup title by beating Angers 1-0 thanks to an injury-time own goal. The capital side, who owed their victory to Issa Cissokho’s own goal a minute into added time in an otherwise dull final,
claimed the title for the third year running and have now won 32 consecutive League Cup and French Cup games. Their last defeat in a cup match came in the 2013-14 season when they were knocked out by Montpellier in the last 32 of the French Cup. The result should ease the pressure on coach Unai Emery after his side flopped in the Champions
League and lost their Ligue 1 title to Monaco. “It was not an easy season but PSG have what it takes to get a major trophy soon,” said PSG sporting director Patrick Kluivert. “It’s good to win yet another cup. Credit to Angers, they did what it takes to resist,” said PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi. PSG, who now own one more French Cup title

than Marseille, got off to a solid start but Alexandre Letellier denied Edinson Cavani and Marco Verrati early on. Emery’s side struggled to threaten and Angers came closest to scoring midway through the first half when Nicolas Pepe’s fierce 20-metre strike hit Alphonse Areola’s post. Alexandre Letellier made a fine save in the 56th minute to deny Matuidi as Angers held firm. Six minutes from time Cavani, who has scored 49 goals in all competitions this season, squandered a chance to match Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 20152016 tally of 50 when he missed the target from close range. But PSG eventually sealed their win when Senegalese Cissokho put through his own goal when trying to defend a corner. “I have another year’s contract and I am happy here. I think this team can grow,” said Emery. The result earned Girondins de Bordeaux, who finished sixth in Ligue 1, a Europa League spot next season.
AR organises volleyball matches
Mo Farah runs year’s fastest 5,000m in Oregon E U G E N E , M ay 2 8 (Agencies): British double Olympic champion Mo Farah made his last US track race a special one, running the year’s fastest 5,000 metres at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting on Saturday. Farah, who will be moving up to the marathon after August’s IAAF world championships in London, sprinted down the straight to defeat a high-quality field in 13 minutes, 00.70 seconds. “Everybody was in that race and I used my experience to come away with a win,” said Farah. “It’s massive, and what a way to end my career in the US. “This track is where we started in 2011,” said the crowd favourite who trains in nearby Portland. “I remember it clear. I wasn’t the favorite, I was probably ranked sixth or seventh in the race and then I come with the British record, the European record and made my breakthrough year and ended up winning in London 2012.” The 34-year-old, who plans to double in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the world championships, said the race also brought on a lot of pressure. “There’s a lot of people doubting me, ‘Mo’s getting old,’” he said. “There was lots of talk, a lot of youngsters coming through talking a lot. I let my running do my talking. That’s what I’m good at.” Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha finished second in 13:01.21 and Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworwor claimed third in 13:01.35.

Vettel wins Monaco GP
Monte Carlo, May 28 (IANS): Ferrari’s German driver Sebastian Vettel on Sunday won the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix, followed closely by his Finnish team-mate Kimi Raikkonen. With this, his second ever win at Monte Carlo, having won it last in 2011, Vettel notched his third victory of the season, following his success at the Bahrain and Australia Grand Prix. He now has a total of 45 wins, reports Efe. Furthermore, victory in Monaco opened up his lead over Mercedes’ British driver Lewis Hamilton who came in seventh place and stands at 104 points in the season’s rankings, behind 1st place Vettel with 129 points. Raikkonen’s second place finish means Ferrari will take the first and second spots on the podium. Red Bull’s Australian driver, Daniel Ricciardo, took the third place.
South Korean team after beating China in the final on Sunday. GOLD COAST, May 28 (Agencies): South Korea on Sunday won badminton’s Sudirman Cup for the first time in 14 years with an emotional 3-2 victory over 10-time champions China at Australia’s Gold Coast. The South Koreans claimed their fourth cup in the world mixed teams competition with a charged 21-17, 21-13 win by Choi Sol-Gyu and Chae YooJung in the mixed doubles match. The victory - their first in the biennial tournament since Eindhoven in 2003 ended China’s 14-year grip on the Sudirman Cup. South Korea, who also won the Sudirman Cup in 1991 and 1993, fought back from 2-1 down in the final to claim victory. Upon winning match point the entire South Korean team descended on Choi and Chae and swamped them in celebration, with
Chae eventually climbing off the floor in tears. It was an outstanding performance by Choi and Chae, ranked 14th in the world, against the secondranked Chinese combination of Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong. Rio Olympic champions Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan gave China a confident start, rolling through the opening men’s doubles match 21-14, 21-15 in 42 minutes. World bronze medalist Sung Ji-Hyun levelled the final when she mastered He Bingjiao in the women’s singles 21-12, 21-16 in 49 minutes. Chen Long, the reigning Olympic champion, two-time World champion and All England champion, was too strong for Jeon Hyeok-Jin and took 47 minutes to wrap up a 21-10, 21-10 victory to give China a 2-1 lead. But third world-ranked
pair Chang Ye-Na and Lee So-Hee took the final into a fifth match with a 21-19, 2113 win over Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan in a 55-minute women’s doubles rubber.

Stan Wawrinka retains Geneva Open title
G e n e va , M ay 2 8 (IANS): Swiss top seed Stan Wawrinka successfully defended his Geneva Open tennis title with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Germany’s Mischa Zverev. The 32-year-old world No.3 was on Saturday broken twice in the opening set but cleaned up his service games after that, reports Efe. The Swiss star put Zverev under constant pressure with his return game, creating a whopping 18 break points in the match and converting five of them to take the match -- and clinch this clay-court title -- in two hours and 20 minutes. The title is the 16th of Wawrinka’s career and serves as a confidence-booster heading into tennis’ premier clay-court event, the French Open, which gets under way on Sunday. The Swiss, who defeated Croatia’s Marin Cilic to win last year’s Geneva Open title, won his second of three Grand Slam titles at the 2015 French Open. “The level was great today, I think it was a great final,” Wawrinka was quoted
Stanislas Wawrinka as saying on the ATP World Tour’s Web site. “Mischa was playing very well and maybe I was hesitating a bit in the beginning. I’m happy that I came back strongly in the second set and managed to turn the match around.” Despite the loss, the net-rushing Zverev said he was pleased with his performance on tennis’ slowest surface. “It was a great week for me here in Geneva,” the 29year-old German said. “Playing on clay is usually not easy for me, but I really felt great here playing six matches this week and reaching my first semi-final and final on this surface. Congratulations to Stan for a good week and a great match today.”
Dortmund end German Cup jinx B E R L I N, M ay 2 8 (Agencies): Borussia Dortmund snapped their German Cup jinx when they edged past Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 on Saturday to win the trophy after losing the three previous finals, and end their season on a high. Goals from Ousmane Dembele and Bundesliga top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is linked with a move away from the Ruhr valley club this summer, either side of Ante Rebic’s equaliser gave Dortmund, who finished third in the Bundesliga, their first Cup win since their 2012 domestic double. It was also the first trophy for coach Thomas Tuchel, who joined in 2015, and for winger Marco Reus, considered among the most talented players of his generation but who had lost four finals since arriving in 2012, including the 2013 Champions League final. Dortmund’s victory also meant Freiburg, who finished seventh in the Bundesliga, will compete in the Europa League qualifying rounds.
“We had an outstanding performance from the first minute onwards. This team has suffered. They’ven united and responded. They showed strength and unity and played spectacular football today. I’m proud to have won seven of these cups. I’m proud having done this -- winning the championship without losing and winning seven FA Cups,” he said after the match. Chelsea manager Antonio Conte were unhappy with the first goal. “I think the first goal was very strange.” “The first half we didn’t start well, we didn’t have the right approach and we suffered in first 25 minutes. We started to play better in the second half and the red card was decisive,” he said. “There is disappointment for the final result but it can happen and there was a lot of pressure. Victor Moses has been good and played an important season. “Our season was incredible to win the league in this way, it was great but now it’s important to look forward and to restart,” he added.

French Open: Kerber suffers 1st round exit Paris, May 28 (Agencies): Germany’s Angelique Kerber became the first top seed in French Open history to lose in the opening round when she was knocked out by Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday. Before this year, the earliest exits suffered by a top seed were in the second round -- Justine Henin in 2004 and Serena Williams in 2014. Makarova goes on to face either Lesia Tsurenko or Kateryna Kozlova, both of the Ukraine. “It’s unbelievable to win and to do it on my first appearance on Philippe Chatrier court as a singles player after nine years of coming to Paris,” said Makarova, a former semifinalist at the Australian and US Opens. “At the end of the match, it was really tough as I knew she wouldn’t give it to me -- I had to win it.” It was the second successive first round exit at Roland Garros for world number one Kerber, the reigning US Open champion. Last year, she fell to unseeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. It also continued a miserable spell for the German 29-year-old on clay

Barcelona win King’s Cup for third consecutive year M AD R I D, M ay 2 8 (Agencies): Lionel Messi and Neymar showed their pedigree as Barcelona outclassed a determined Alaves side 3-1 on Saturday to win the King’s Cup for a third successive year, allowing coach Luis Enrique to leave the club on a high. Messi curled in the opener in the 30th minute from outside the area following clever link up play with Neymar after Alaves, who were playing in their first domestic final, had struck the inside of the post. The Basque side drew level three minutes later when Theo Her nandez fizzed a spectacular free kick into the top corner although Neymar restored Barca’s lead a minute before halftime, bundling in Andre Gomes’s pass from close range after starting the move with a dazzling run down the left. Paco Alcacer further stretched the Catalans’ lead two minutes later killing off Alaves’ hopes of a first trophy in their 96-year history and delivering Barca’s 29th King’s Cup, the ninth trophy of Luis Enrique’s three-year tenure. Barca were searching for one piece of silverware
Barcelona’s players and the game in Madrid. to end a disappointing campaign after surrendering the Liga title to Real Madrid and exiting the Champions League in the quarter-finals to Juventus and were without prolific striker Luis Suarez and defender Sergi Roberto through suspension. They suffered an early setback when Javier Mascherano was carried off on a stretcher following a head-on collision with
staff pose for a photo with their newly earned Copa del Rey after winning Alaves midfielder Marcos Llorente, who had to sport a bandage on his head for the rest of the game. Alaves brought an extra 2,000 fans to the Vicente Calderon than their illustrious opponents and were dreaming of a repeat of their shock league win at the Nou Camp earlier in the season, although this time Barca were fielding a far stronger starting line-up.
Alaves nearly took a surprise lead when Gerard Pique gave the ball away to Ibai Gomez, who fired under Jasper Cillessen and off the inside of the near post, watching the ball trickle just beyond the far post. Messi’s brilliant strike, his fifth goal in seven King’s Cup finals, did not crush Alaves and they quickly drew level with the thunderbolt free kick from Theo, a
loan signing from Atletico Madrid who is expected to join champions Real Madrid in the summer. But Messi and Neymar had not finished yet. The Argentine fed substitute Gomes who teed up Nemyar and barely two minutes later Messi went on another rampaging run through the middle to play in Alcacer and ensure there was no way back for Alaves.
L Sarita Devi
Pinki Jangra
NEW DELHI, May 28 (PTI): Less than six months after taking the professional plunge, former world champion L Sarita Devi and Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Pinki Jangra will return to amateur boxing after apologising to the national federation. The two boxers, who had signed up with the Indian Boxing Council (IBC), will be re-joining the national camp after submitting letters of apology to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) for abruptly leaving the amateur circuit not too long back. “Pinki will be joining
the camp from tomorrow, while Sarita will also be joining soon after taking care of some personal issues. Both of them have apologised. While Sarita had not kept us in the loop when she turned professional, Pinki had left the camp without taking permission,” a top BFI official told PTI. The 31-year-old Sarita, who hasn’t competed since winning her debut professional bout on January 29, is currently in Mumbai attending to her mother, who is unwell, and will be joining the national camp after a few days.
“Sarita is currently preoccupied with her mother’s health. She will be joining the camp soon. She had requested permission from the BFI because this year, the Asian Championship is lined up in November (in Vietnam). The BFI has accepted her request,” a source close to Sarita stated. Pinki, a former national gold-medallist, had turned professional within a few days of Sarita. The 27-year-old said she was keen to come back to the amateur fold after getting a taste of the pro circuit. “I wanted to try my hand at pro, which I did. It was basically to enhance my strength and endurance. Plus I have not fought since my debut win. So, I requested the federation to allow me back and they agreed,” Pinki said. When asked whether the request also included an apology for leaving the camp without intimating the BFI, Pinki replied in the affirmative.
