NEW DELHI, MAY 24 (NPN): As the BJP swept to power with a spectacular performance for a second term, all eyes are now on government formation, amid speculation that several new faces including party president Amit Shah may be brought into the new cabinet.

A Cabinet meeting was held at 5 p.m. on Friday at the South Block where a resolution for the 16th Lok Sabha was passed. The meeting was followed by Narendra Modi and his outgoing Council of Ministers tendering their resignations to President Ram Nath Kovind.

Many party leaders are of the view that Shah will join the Modi Cabinet and be given one of the four key ministries– Home, Finance, External Affairs and Defence.

Petrol, diesel prices hiked NEW DELHI, MAY 24 (AGENCIES): Oil marketing companies (OMCs) raised petrol and diesel prices marginally on Friday. As per the Indian Oil Corporation data, petrol became dearer by 14 paise a litre to Rs 71.39 in Delhi, while diesel was revised by 16 paise to Rs 66.45 per litre on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, petrol price was revised to Rs 71.25 and the diesel price was hiked to Rs 66.29, the data showed. The rates of fuel are revised everyday at 6 am in the morning. The change in domestic fuel prices varies from state to state and it also depend upon international crude prices and the value of rupee.

Meanwhile, crude oil futures were trading higher on Friday, after the overnight crash due to escalated trade tensions between the US and China. The Brent oil futures closed at 67.76 per barrel on Thursday.

According to industry experts, the oil PSUs may hike the retail price of petrol and diesel by Rs 3-5 per litre in phases as elections are over in India.

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), which have not fiddled with the prices much in the past months amid ongoing polls, are likely to pass the burden to the consumers.

With Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj having health issues, there have been talks whether they will be part of the new dispensation or not. After the Cabinet’s recommendation, President Ram Nath Kovind is now expected to dissolve the present Lok Sabha, the term of which is ending on June 3.

President Kovind hosted a banquet in honour of the outgoing Union Council of Ministers, led by Prime Minister, at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Sources said that Modi submitted the recommendation to dissolve the present Lok Sabha and the resignations.

The President accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed The 17th Lok Sabha has to be constituted before June 3. The process to form a new House will be initi-

ated when the three election commissioners meet the president in the next few days to hand over the list of newly-elected members.

Besides the prime minister, the Union Council of Ministers has 60 members, including cabinet ministers, ministers of state with independent charges and ministers of state.

In the absence of the PM, the Union Council of Ministers passed a resolution praising the leadership of Modi and the work done by the government in the last five years. The present Modi government had taken oath on May 26, 2014.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting will take place Saturday where all the formalities of electing Narendra Modi as its leader will take place.

The meeting will take place at the Central Hall of Parliament at 5 p.m.

After the resolution is passed, Modi is expected to meet the President to stake claim to form the new government. Following this, the date for the oath-taking ceremony of PM Modi and his new cabinet will be fixed.

With Modi already being announced as the prime ministerial candidate of the alliance, the meeting is being considered a mere formality.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Varanasi on 28 May, followed by a visit to Gujarat on 29 May, a BJP source cited by CNN-News18 said.

The swearing-in is likely to happen on 30 May.

20 students killed in Guj building fire SURAT, MAY 24 (PTI): A massive fire engulfed a fourstorey commercial complex in Surat on Friday, killing 20 teenage students at a coaching centre, many of whom jumped and fell to their deaths while some were suffocated, officials said.

Several injuries were also reported.

TV channels showed horrific scenes at the Takshashila Complex in Sarthana area where the building is located, as students tried to save themselves by jumping out of windows.

Around 20 students have died either due to suffocation or jumping from the building when fire engulfed the commercial complex, Gujarat minister of state for health Kishor Kanani said.

“We have ordered a detailed inquiry and anyone found responsible for the incident won’t be spared,” Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said.

“Several students on the fourth and third floor jumped off to the ground to save themselves from fire and smoke. Many have been sent to hospital. The operation to douse the fire is on,” said a city fire official.

dents jumping off from third and fourth floor windows amid plumes of thick smoke rising from the building.

Nineteen fire tenders and two hydraulic platforms were pressed into service for dousing and rescue operations, Sarthana area of Surat, said an official of Surat fire control room.

Local people helped with the rescue operation to save stranded students and other occupants of the building housing coaching classes and other establishments.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ordered the principal secretary of the Urban Development department to rush to the spot.

He also declared financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each for the family members of those who died in the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “extremely anguished” by the fire tragedy in his home state. “My thoughts are with bereaved families.

May the injured recover quickly. Have asked the Gujarat Government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected,” Modi tweeted.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on his condolences to the families of the students killed and said he prayed for the early recovery of those injured.

NPCC ridicules Tokheho NBGF, WAYA flay Myanmar military action PDA reiterates commitment to facilitate political negotiations for his comment on CAB

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 4 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has termed newlyelected Lok Sabha member Tokheho Yepthomi’s reported comment that CAB is not a threat to Naga people as misleading.

In a statement issued, NPCC president K Therie asserted that Tokheho’s assertion is not in the interest of Naga people and warned that he will be held responsible by the future generation.

Therie explained that the proposed amendment does not speak of people who overstay as the government’s objective is to accommodate any person from six religious communities – Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Christians and Sikhs – from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan and make him or her eligible for citizenship, if his or her period of

residence is not less than six years.

The NPCC chief said, as per the proposed amendment, even those individuals who had illegally entered India in the past and are staying and fulfil the stated timeframe shall be eligible for Indian citizenship. He asserted that nobody can stop them from enjoying constitutional provisions and entitlements like voting rights, owning properties and legal protection. He warned that they will come in crores within a decade and “we will be submerged under the ocean of these immigrants”.

Referring to Tokheho’s statement that Nagas are not aware of the contents of the Bill, the NPCC president remarked, “We may not be as qualified as he is, but we have read the Bill and we understand each word and meaning.”

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 4 (NPN): Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) has condemned the purported continued attack on NSCN (K) by Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) and creating a war-like situation risking and affecting the lives of Nagas living in that region.

In a NGBF general secretary Shikuto Zalipu and media secretary Akhu Naga asserted that the atrocities carried out against Nagas by the Myanmar military, bombing the areas near Chen Hoyat village and creating havoc in the villages were a matter of serious concern.

According to NGBF, unwarranted and arbitrary sanctions, fund cuts and disruption of essential supplies to the people have been imposed at the behest of the military, which has caused untold misery and suffering to the people especially the children. The federation expressed surprise that the

offensive operation has been carried out when NSCN (K) was still under the ceasefire agreement signed in 2012.

“Such act of treason must be condemned by one and all including the International organizations,” NGBF stated.

The GBs affirmed that the “Nagas are living in their God’s given Land either in Myanmar or India. They are aboriginal people of the Land. No outside forces should even think to invade forcibly.”

Also, asserting that Nagas were one irrespective of geographical boundaries, NGBF said Nagas were united to protect “our Naga Nation and our Political right.”

Further, NGBF appealed to the international organizations to intervene immediately and stop further human right violations in the name of military operation.

Meanwhile, the federa-

tion has also strongly condemned the “gruesome killing” of Arunachal Pradesh MLA, his son and nine others in an ambush by suspected militants in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on May 21, 2019. NGBF stated that no amount of justification can suffice “such act of coward and outrageous offence.”

NGBF has appealed to the responsible authority to unearth the fact, specify and punish the culprit as per the law.

WAYA: Wakching Area Youth Association (WAYA) has also strongly condemned the firing and bombing activities by Myanmar military in the civilian area.

In a press release, WAYA president Yonglong K Konyak and general secretary Omtick E Konyak stated that the weeklong military offensive has gravely affected the lives of villagers.

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 4 (NPN): Ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) Friday reiterated its commitment to “actively” facilitate the ongoing “Indo-Naga” political negotiations and make all possible efforts towards facilitating an early political solution.

PDA through its media cell said the alliance has been consistent in its political stand and have reiterated time and again that it would not stand in the way and pave way for any alternative arrangement that may arise out of the political talks.

PDA also reemphasized its support of the legitimate demand of the Naga people for integration of all Naga inhabited areas under a single administrative umbrella as unanimously resolved by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on five occasions.

Final results: Resounding Modi wave as BJP secures 303, NDA 351 NEW DELHI, MAY 24 (AGENCIES): With the official count in the Lok Sabha elections over on Friday, the BJP has secured 303 seats, which is 22 more than it got in the 2014 elections and along with its allies the NDA took its tally up to 351 in the 17th Lok Sabha.

The biggest chunk of the BJP contingent will come from UP where the party secured 62 seats overcoming a formidable challenge of the grand alliance of SP-BSPRLD combine.

The party, which had swept the 2014 elections garnering 71 seats, was expected to lose considerably but the BJP proved its detractors wrong by virtually repeating its performance now. The party lost only nine seats now, which it has made up for handsomely by winning an impressive 18 seats in West Bengal and 8 in Odisha.

The grand old party, Congress has drawn a blank in 18 states and Union Territories -- an indicator of its decimation in the Lok Sabha polls.

This is the Congress’ second straight rout in Lok Sabha elections after it was decimated in the 2014 polls when the party ended up with a tally of 44 seats.

It bagged only 52 seats in this election.

The Congress has been completely routed in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand.

Training his guns on the Congress, BJP chief Amit Shah on Thursday said the grand old party had drawn a “big zero” in 17 states and Union Territo-

ries, while the saffron party got more than 50 per cent votes in 17 states.

Murmurs have already started within the party over taking responsibility for its poor performance across the country, with some of its leaders already sending in their resignation.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar and Odisha Congress president Niranjan Patnaik announced their resignation in the wake of the party’s electoral debacle in their respective states.

According to sources, the party has convened a meeting of the Congress Working Committee, its highest decision making body, at 11 am on Saturday.

Rahul Gandhi is likely to offer his resignation at the meet, party sources said.

The top Congress leadership will deliberate on the reasons for the loss and assess them.

Appreciating the signing of the August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement by NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PDA appealed to the new dispensation of the forthcoming central government to expedite the negotiations.

Also, appreciating the Government of India for recognizing the unique history of the Nagas, the PDA appealed for a political solution that honours the legitimate political rights of the Naga people and ensures the political symbols for which the Naga movement has struggled.

Meanwhile, PDA has extended its “deepest appreciation” to the people of Nagaland and the electorate for reposing faith on the PDA consensus candidate, Tokheho in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Burglaries on the rise in Dmu: BAN

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 4 (NPN): Expressing alarm at numerous reports of burglaries in the city, Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has urged the police to give importance to the matter and curb the menace at the earliest.

In a release, BAN said some culprits broke into the office of a BAN member in Midland colony in the third week of May. Similarly, there have been many reports of burglaries in Midland and other parts of Dimapur in the recent past. As a result apprehension is slowly developing among the business community and public in general, it pointed out. Mentioning that the culprits are seemingly getting bold and confident and not afraid to commit such crimes, BAN said involvement of an organised gang behind all these cannot be ruled out.

27th CTC at Sangdak village

DIMAPUR: Three-day 27th Chang Theological Conference was held at Sangdak village Tuensang from May 17-19 under the theme, “Kaibu khagenbu khumtiashi” (fulfil your ministry).

A press release by CTC stated that in a message, speaker, executive secretary Chang Baptist Lashong Thangyen (CBLT), exhorted the gathering to complete their ministry and manifest the work of Lord.

DIMAPUR: Konyak Union (KU) while taking note of “the joint military manoeuvre against the NSCN within Konyak soil” has expressed dismay over “such odious act”, which it described, was an “uncivilized diplomacy” to curtail the age old Naga political issue.

In a press release, KU president Manlip Konyak and general secretary Honang Konyak said that the KU since time memorial had always stood for peace and for a peaceful solution.

KU asserted that it had without any bias out rightly and consistently denounced any act of violence committed by any groups within its jurisdiction.

Asser ted that the “quandar y of Easter n Konyaks is still very pathetic”, the KU said the people had been living constantly in dread on account of militarized attitude being inflicted upon the region. “Our existence had seems invaluable to both India and Myanmar Government. Government sanctioning such drastic strategy itself proves its immature policy of the nation,” KU stated.

The union maintained that Konyaks had hustled in bloodshed, endured and killed for the past 70-80 years. “Today, the same should not be repeated nor we will succumb to it,” it stated.

According to KU, the government giving sanctions for “indiscriminate bombardment” itself was

a direct violation of human rights. It stated that such act of violence was a direct violation of human rights, which required to be tabled at the United Nations (UN). KU while considering the plight of the poor public urged both the Government of India (GoI) and Myanmar government to immediately restrain and opt for a peaceful solution.

KU lamented that its peace mission for honourable solution had been shattered on account of such creation and infliction. The proposed Longwa summit, which was scheduled for May 17, 2019, had been called off temporarily, KU stated.

KU said Konyaks were shocked that during the June 16 joint operation, two Myanmar troops were killed and several injured on account of mistaken firing between the two parties. KU claimed that the dead body of the Myanmar personnel along with several injured were brought to Khamti town.

The union said it was deeply disappointed “to hear grieving Konyak brothers from Myanmar reproving the Government of India for instigating the Tatmadaw officials to unleash their barbaric act upon the poor Konyak public for huge returns.”

Therefore, KU has appealed to the Government of India to immediately talk with its counterpart and freeze “such barbaric operation.” It added that solution cannot happen without negotiation and

peace.

KU also appealed to the Northeast insurgent groups to pave way for a peaceful and amicable solution.

KU declared that Konyak soil “shall no longer be used to cradle any violence and bloodshed”, adding that “Our soil is to toil, breed and to survive but not to be stained with blood and chaos.”

Further, KU asserted that peaceful negotiation was necessary for any forms of solution. “Solution doesn’t mean to surrender but to come in term, learn to Co-exist together and to understand one another,” it emphasised.

Ever y insurgent group, KU said must learn to retrospect. “Konyaks had suffered enough and we are in far afield for tolerance today. Konyak can no longer be ill with on account of any intractable ideology that breeds brutality,” KU pointed out.

The Konyaks while upholding their identity, traditional and customary rights, KU said sincerely aspired for peace, progress and development in their land like the rest.

It stated that both the government of India and Myanmar gover nment should comprehend “this very sentiment.” KU underscored that immediate measure needed to be initiated in order to find a means for peace. “Missiles can destroy a nation but not its spirit which is deeply rooted upon a solid rock,” KU added.

DIMAPUR: Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) conducted various activities across the state for the benefit and welfare of farming community.

Yanthamo village: ATMA Wokha organised district level exhibition cum farmers scientists interaction and farmers award programmes on May 17 at Yanthamo village covering seven villages.

A press release by ATMA Wokha stated that exhibition programme was held on various local agricultural where cash prizes were given away on all the items.

Longsa village: ATMA, Wokha block conducted one day “Kisan Ghosti” on May 18 at Longsa village. Training and awareness on fall armyworm attack in maize was conducted where farmers were asked to be aware and take needful measures during its initial stage. The technical session was conducted by BTM Wokha block, Dr. Tiatula Jamir, where details about the life

cycle of the fall armyworm, identification mark of the insect, stage of the insect where the crops are attacked and point of attack was thoroughly discussed.

The second session was followed by farmersscientist interaction programme where Dr. N. Khumdemo Ezung, senior scientist and Head (i/c), KVK Kiphire and ACTO (Agronomy), KVK, Wokha and Dr. Tiatula Jamir, BTM cleared the doubts raised by the farmers.

During the third session, a demonstration programme on insecticide/ bio-pesticide dosage and spraying techniques was also conducted in the farm-

ers’ field. The pneumatic sprayer measurement of the correct dose of insecticide/biopesticide and spot application of insecticide/ biopesticide was demonstrated by BTM, Dr. Tiatula Jamir.

After releasing the books, Ura Academy president Shürhozelie Liezietsu thanked the academy for giving their best and adding

more books to the shelf and keeping Tenyidie alive.

He encouraged all to keep writing and appealed all the privileged classes to help the upcoming writers in publishing and printing.

Liezietsu also encouraged all to read more books in local dialect.

The programme was blessed by Khedi Baptist Church, senior pastor Viwelie followed by greetings

by Peluopfhelie Kesiezie and D.Kuolie.

Giving a short review of the books, author Vizonyü Liezietsu, said

it took him 30 years to complete the Dzieseda (Dictionary) consisting of 800 words, Mia Krü-Nuo Si Kezhü Huo (parenting advice) where parents can teach their children on the basic work, cultural and traditional concept, LhenuTelha mu Ciethoko (climate -change and crops), which can help the farmers, Thekreda (humour) as laughter is the best medicine. DIMAPUR: A one-way awareness and training programme on “Cyber crimes, Cyber Laws in India & Electronic Evidence” was held at NEILIT, Meriema, Kohima on Friday.

Organized under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with Alliance Law Office, New Delhi and National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology, Nagaland, the training was conducted with resource persons from Supreme Court judges and cyber lawyers, New Delhi- Advocate Manish Manocha, Supreme Court of India and Advocate Meena Bhandari, Supreme

DIMAPUR: Assessment camps for Children with Special Needs (CWSN) were conducted at EBRC hall Kiphire on May 22 and Mokokchung village on May 18, in collaboration with Starkey New Delhi, medical department and Social Welfare departments.

Organized by district mission authority (DMA) Kiphire, children with visually impairment, locomotors disability, hearing impairment problems attended the camp.

According to DIPR report, assistive devices were provided to all the special needs children as per their needs after the assessment camp. Deputy mission director, SSA Talitemsu Jamir in his short speech called upon

all the beneficiaries to utilize their assistive devices with care. Around 100 children with special needs received their assistive devices on the spot. The official team for the camp was led by Talitemsu Jamir deputy mission director, SSA, Vijay Bushan Starkey, New Delhi, Wati Jamir NRRC Dimapur, Manen Jamir technician, SSA, C. Dedicating the bridge to the people of Mima village, which serves as a lifeline to the farmers, Kire appreciated the village elders and menfolk, for their efforts in constructing the bridge.

He said, Mima village being blessed with abundant natural resources, the village has the prospects to build a self reliant and

strong economy, if the people could take advantage of its resources and conducive environment.

He also assured his best to extend support to the rural populace in whatever ways he can for their benefit.

Resource person of the programme, member of M/s Cenergist Energy Pvt. N. Bose, gave a slide presentation on MuDSM and spoke on the importance of using LED lights, so as to reduce energy consumption.

Other parties will see the folly in opposing it and back us. If that happens, we can get the bill through both houses of Parliament that did not happen last time,” said a top BJP leader on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to media.

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 4 (AGENCIES): The Assam Rifles Battalions of IGAR (South), apprehended suspected arms dealer, Kn Angdum, age 43 years s/o D Tomba r/o village Khudei Khunou along with an accomplice in general area Kakching on May 22.

A press release by AR PRO stated that based on input received of weapons deal taking place in the general area of Kakching Garden, troops established multiple mobile vehicle check posts in the area during which a Maruti 800 car was stopped for checking, where the accused, Kn Angdum, age 43 years s/o D Tomba r/o village Khudei Khunou rushed out of the car pointing a loaded pistol at Assam Rifle troops and tried to flee. The troops of Assam Rifles however pursued Kn Angdum and nabbed him after a brief scuffle. The

accomplice, D Madun (25) s/o D Tomba r/o village Khudei Khunou was caught from inside the car.

On interrogation, the individuals provided information regarding a cache of weapons hidden beneath a nearby culvert. A detailed search of the area led to the recovery of three AK-56 rifles with magazines, one 9 mm Pistol with a magazine and five rounds. One Maruti 800 car and FZ Yamaha motor cycle involved in the gun running racket have also been seized, the release stated The individual further revealed that he was an ex cadre of NSCN (IM) and had served in the outfit from 1992 to 2011, and has been helping the outfit with their logistic. Both the individuals have been booked and handed over to the Kakching police for further action, the release added.

IMPHAL, May 24: Manipur Congress said that it was “little hard to believe” the poll results which was declared in the wee hour of Friday in which the party lost both the seats in the state.

The counting of votes for the Inner Manipur PC and Outer Manipur PC concluded after midnight on Thursday with NPF candidate winning on the Outer and BJP candidate in the Inner.

The final results showed NPF candidate Lorho S Pfoze won the Outer seat by a huge margin of 73, 782 from his nearest rival BJP candidate Houlim Shokhopao Mate aka Benjamin Mate.

NPF secured 3,63,527 votes, that is 42.37% of total valid 858029 votes while BJP got 2,89,745 (33.77%).

Cong ress candidate K James, in the third position was far behind with 1,52,510 (17.77%) only.

G U W H AT I , M AY 2 3 (AGENCIES): Bharatiya Janata Party’s leading poll strategist from the Northeast and Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said his party will go ahead with the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) again, reports Northeast Now news .

Himanta told NDTV during a video interview that the huge mandate BJP has got in Assam and West Bengal justified the move.

“Despite all propoganda, the mandate we have got makes it clear that the opposition to the CAB is tenuous.

By promising CAB, we have gained in both West Bengal and Assam,” Himanta told NDTV.

He said the BJP was committed to provide refuge and citizenship to persecuted minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

BJP sources in Delhi said that with the phenomenal showing in West Bengal and Assam, the party leadership has good reasons to believe that the CAB stance helped the saffron brigade do well at the hustings.

The feeling in the BJP party centre is that the promise of CAB – and opposition to it by Trinamool Congress and Congress – helped consolidation of the Bengali Hindu vote behind the BJP and led to astounding gains in West Bengal, Assam and Tripura.

The Unit Citation Award mentioned that 15 Assam Rifles arrived in Manipur in December, 2017 and wsas deployed at Mantripukhri, Imphal to assist in stabilizing volatile security situation in the state while at the same time contributing in society building.

The citation added, “the unit has ensured implementation of its mandate in the face of challenges posed by intense counter insurgency or counter terrorism scenario and has preserved the decorum of law and maintained empathy with the local populace in a praiseworthy manner.”

GUWAHATI, MAY 23 (AGENCIES): For mer Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice AS Bopanna was one of the four Supreme Court judges administered the oath of office on Friday by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi.

The other three who have been sworn in as the Supreme Court judges include Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant and Aniruddha Bose. With the swearing -in of four new judges, the apex court will now function with its full sanctioned strength of 31 judges for the first time since 2008.

In 2008, the Parliament had increased the full strength of judges from 26 to 31. Along with the CJI, the Supreme Court was earlier functioning with a total of 27 judges. President Ram Nath Kovind had issued warrants of appointments of the four judges on Wednesday.

The names of Justices Bose and Bopanna had earlier been recommended for elevation by the Supreme Court collegium but the Centre had returned their names citing seniority and representation of regions as the reasons.

However, the collegium later repeated is recommendations to elevate Justices Bose and Bopanna after observing that there was nothing lacking in their competence, conduct or integrity.

Ko l k ata , M ay 2 4 (IANS): West Bengal Congress President Somen Mitra on Thursday termed Bharatiya Janata Party’s unprecedented rise in the state in the 2019 elections as an “ominous sign” and held the ruling Trinamool Congress “solely responsible” for the situation.

“We never expected that the BJP will make inroads in Bengal to this extent. It is unprecedented in our political career. The saddest part is that it is an ominous sign for Bengal.

The ruling Trinamool Congress is solely responsible for this situation,” Mitra told IANS at the state Congress headquarters here.

“Those who once strengthened the hands of BJP to weaken Congress will now find it difficult to protect their own existence.

Also, BJP’s rise in Bengal means communal polarisation and religious intolerance will increase manifold in Bengal which is harmful for the state,” he added.

When the decision over an alliance was going on, I told them (Left) clearly that even if we are able to retain our seats, the Left would not be able to win a single seat in Bengal without an alliance,” the veteran leader said. Mitra accused the Left of a “bigbrotherly attitude” towards Congress and claimed their decision to unilaterally announce the candidates for 25 seats brought down the curtains on the swat adjustment talks.

“They had pride that their party got 23-24 percent votes in the last general elections while we got 11 percent. So they had a bigbrotherly attitude towards Congress.

“I told them it was baseless because none of us had the majority. If both fail in an examination, it is irrelevant to think who got more marks. Failure is a failure.

But they still announced 25 seats unilaterally. So the alliance was not possible. Hope they would understand from their mistake,” he added.

BJP vote share in Odisha increases by almost 73% New Delhi, May 24 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) vote share in Odisha in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections increased by almost 73 per cent with the party set to increase its tally to eight seats from the two it won in 2014.

On Friday, the party confirmed its victory in five Lok Sabha seats while it was leading in three other seats, as per the Election Commission data.

The saffron party has polled 38.4 per cent of the total votes as against 21.9 per cent in the previous election. The state’s ruling Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) vote share has reduced marginally -- from 44.8 per cent in 2014 to 42.8 per cent in 2019. Also, the number of seats it has managed to win this time has reduced to 12 won eight seats and leading on four.

In 2014, the BJD had won 20 out of the state’s total 21 Lok Sabha seats.

For the Congress, the vote share reduced drastically from 26.4 per cent in 2014 to 13.8 per cent this time. However, the party still managed to win a single seat.

Among the major fights, the BJP’s Sambit Patra lost to

the BJD’s Pinaki Mishra in Puri with a margin of 11,714 votes.

Sitting BJP MP and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram won from Sundargarh with a winning margin of 1,23,605 votes.

In Kendrapara, the BJD’s Anubhav Mohanty defeated Baijayant Panda, who had defected to the BJP earlier this year.

Five-time parliamentarian Bhartuhari Mahtab has retained Cuttack with a vote margin of 1,21,201.

Assembly polls were also held in the state simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections. The BJD has won 95 seats while it secured a leading position in 12 of the total 146 segments in the state, thus confirming incumbent Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s return for a consecutive fifth term.

The BJP has pulled through in 19 Assembly segments and was seen leading in four seats on Friday morning.

The Congress has scored a win in eight seats besides leading in one. The Communist Party of IndiaMarxist opened its account in the state by winning one seat.

The DMK secured 32.76 per cent of votes, its ally Congress 12.76 per cent, AIADMK ally PMK 5.42 per cent and another AIADMK ally BJP 3.66 per cent.

The DMDK floated by actor A. Vijayakant (AIADMK ally) got 2.19 per cent votes while the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Communist Party of India (CPI) secured 2.40 per cent and 2.43 per cent votes, respectively, as DMK allies.

“AIADMK also lost 13 of the 21 Assembly seats in the by-elections,” Palanisamy underlined.

He said the party would in earlier times convene a meeting of its General Council to discuss electoral

alliances.

“This time no such meeting was held to ascertain the views of the cadres.”

Prior to the Lok Sabha polls, many in the AIADMK were of the view that the party should not have a tie-up with the BJP and support it post elections if needed.

The BJP lost all the five Lok Sabha seats it contested, including that of Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan (Kanyakumari).

According to Palanisamy, the factors that derailed the AIADMK were many, including the Modi government’s indifferent attitude when the state was affected by cyclone Gaja and the Pollachi sex abuse and blackmail case.

According to him, the elections have proved that T.T.V. Dhinakaran’s AMMK was not a factor to affect the party.

The DMK-led alliance routed the AIADMK-led alliance by winning 37 of the 38 Lok Sabha seats.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 24 (IANS): With the dust of the Lok Sabha elections settling down, Kerala will be ready for another round for polls -- the Assembly bypolls for six constituencies, which will be next big test for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Left parties.

Attempting a military solution

ince mid-May the Myanmar army (or Tatmadaw) launched a military operation on the NSCN led by Aug Yung and the helpless Konyak Naga villagers in the region have been hardest hit, according to reports. The Tatmadaw has justified the operation on the ground that the NSCN had violated the cease fire agreement signed in 2012.

The Tatmadaw’s operation this time is believed to be in coordination with Indian security forces targeting the north east rebels who are reported to be operating from the neighbouring country. It is reported that ten Naga leaders were arrested in March and continue to languish in Myanmarese jail and currently under trial. The ten Naga leaders were arrested by the military junta in-spite of the fact that they were on a mission to lay the groundwork for a peace process between the Nagas and the Myanmar Government. If the ten were on a goodwill mission to cement the cease fire agreement, then it can only mean that the Tatmadaw has taken a unilateral decision to abrogate the cease fire. Sources further said that the Myanmar army may have knowingly targeted the Konyak region command of the Aug Yung-led NSCN (K) based on reports of the group sheltering other North East insurgents like ULFA (I), KLO, NDFB etc. The point is whether the reason given by the Tatmadaw is a fact or simply a pretext to launch a full scale military operation, remains to be answered. Rebel groups from the north east have been operating from their safe havens located within the un-administered Naga territories in Myanmar.

However after the signing of the 2012 cease fire with the Myanmar government, the Naga group(NSCN led by Aug Yung) has been keeping a low profile mainly since it wanted to follow the path of political negotiations especially after its split between the Nagaland and the Myanmar factions. In the spirit of the cease fire, the Myanmar government ought to have confronted the Nagas about it with proof. The Myanmar government should have also issued a specific ultimatum on the NSCN to ask the north east rebel groups to leave. Be that as it may, the plight of the civilian population is a serious concern. According to reports reaching here, the civilian population has been encircled and trapped and subjected to vicious firing and bombardment. It is also reported that the NSCN group has restrained from taking counter attacks for fear of inviting worse reprisals on the civilians. While the NGOs from Nagaland such as Naga Hoho, Naga Mothers Association, NSF etc and others have criticised the Myanmar government for reneging the peace treaty, especially in the light of the untold sufferings of the Naga civilians; Nagaland political parties have remained mute. It is surprising that the state political parties have chosen not to utter a word of protest against the suffering being faced

by Nagas in Myanmar. The political parties bring out instant press statements on mundane issues but it is surprising that they have taken a vow of silence on the matter. Whether India or Myanmar of any other place, when brothers and sisters are in deep trouble, there should be no two opinions about the need to raise a voice in solidarity. The political parties should urge the central government to intervene in the interest of the safety and security of the civilians and to renew negotiations for a permanent solution.

Yet when He suddenly appears to you with totally unfamiliar characteristics, the only thing you can do is fall “at His feet as dead.” There are times when God cannot reveal Himself in any other way than in His majesty, and it is the awesomeness of the vision which brings you to the delight of despair. You experience this joy in hopelessness, realizing that if you are ever to be raised up it must be by the hand of God. “He laid His right hand on me…” (Revelation 1:17). In the midst of the awesomeness, a touch comes, and you know it is the right hand of Jesus Christ. You know it is not the hand of restraint, correction, nor chastisement, but the right hand of the Everlasting Father.

Whenever His hand is laid upon you, it gives inexpressible peace and comfort, and the sense that “underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27), full of support, provision, comfort, and strength. And once His touch comes, nothing at all can throw you into fear again. In the midst of all His ascended glory, the Lord Jesus comes to speak to an insignificant disciple, saying, “Do not be afraid” (Revelation 1:17). His tenderness is inexpressibly sweet. Do I know Him like that?

Take a look at some of the things that cause despair. There is despair which has no delight, no limits whatsoever, and no hope of anything brighter. But the delight of despair comes when “I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells…” (Romans 7:18).

I delight in knowing that there is something in me which must fall prostrate before God when He reveals Himself to me, and also in knowing that if I am ever to be raised up it must be by the hand of God. God can do nothing for me until I recognize the limits of what is humanly possible, allowing Him to do the impossible.

Growth, consumerism and the plastic ban M ainstream economics have been debating for a long time over the efficacy of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as an index for measuring or furthering national welfare.

As of now, almost all nations across the world use the GDP to assess economic performance. An increase in national output leads to an increase in GDP which further lead to an increase in the percapita income and employment on one hand and reduction of poverty on the other. As such, policy prescriptions are shoved in to push the GDP upwards consistently overtime.

A major limitation of this index, however, is its inability to accurately reflect the effects of externalities on national welfare. Development models that seeks to push the economy’s growth rate often ignores the cost associated with it in terms of destruction of natural resources, habitat loss, pollution and its overall impact on the environment. Most governments consider an increase in GDP as an economic and policy achievement. Hence, these results are increasingly used to further their political image and agenda. However, in course of time, we have witnessed a growing disparity in income across and within nations, indicating that growth is not being equitably distributed. We have also seen that growth has been accompanied by rapid depletion of natural resources and erosion of air, water and soil quality, which again have an adverse effect on human welfare.

One notable negative externalities of high growth rate is its fallout on the environment, particularly air and solid waste pollu-

tion. Energy is the most potent tool to raise growth and productivity. However, most conventional source of energy emits pollutants and thereby pollutes the environment, causing numerous health issues and reduces the longevity of the society. Another major tool of growth is by way of pushing consumerism in the society. Consumerism is a social and economic order that encourages the purchase of goods and services in greater scale. The goal of the producers being to maximize profit, have revolutionize the marketing technology, whereby branding, attractive packaging, cheap or free accessories to induce consumers have become commonplace. And through pervasivemedia campaigns, consumers are lured into the trap of corporate designs to buy more and more.

Every product that is bought from the market or online stores comes along with some components of plastic, either in the form of packaging or carry bags.

Plastics are also replacing wood, steel, aluminum, clay or ceramic products at an increasing rate. However, the major challenge comes from the single use plastics, including, grocery bags, polythene, bottles, straws, cups and cutlery etc. While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become accustomed and addicted to single-use or disposable plastics which have severe environmental consequences.

Around the world, one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute, while up to 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are being used every year.

t is evident that no matter how powerful, educated, experienced, talented, creative, wealthy, strong, weak, rich and poor we are all going to die one day. Yet, we use to forget to do good things when we are able to do and use to realize while there is little time left in our hand. Should we only wait for a retirement or an old age to be good to others, a God fearing person, the best motivator and a soft hearted creature? It must be good indeed, perhaps, that must be an answer to someone’s prayer or personal zeal however, futile in logical sense for people will research your history.

Everyone can contribute and amplify positivity in the society according to his/her capacity, abilities and ideas. The best time to work for His Glory, giving a helping hand to the needy, rendering service to the society is ‘NOW’ while we are young and physically and mentally capable.

At times, a sense of realization and timorous feelings occur when we hear a news of death, tragedy, when we attend a funeral service or vice versa.

We also take decision and make a resolution that I will remain a good person from now on, I will change, I will contribute something to the society. Nevertheless, we tend to forget as the time goes by and stick to abide with the same old habits; we fall in with the social evils and eventually become a victim.

In our society we see many ‘Yithio’ ( which means a man of words in Lotha) where He make only excuses and does not contribute anything to the society. Another one is ‘Phankalao’ (also in Lotha which means a person who follows others easily without reasoning) such individuals have no concern and vision for the society for He focus only for His personal benefit. We must make sure that we are not in this two category if we want to see a change in the society.

Keeping in mind, spreading of rumors, propaganda and circulation of fake news are the trend of this generation which hampers the peace, progress and development in the society. Let’s raise the wall against such social evils. Let us also pray for our leaders, encourage and appreciate them for their contributions, help the Church, cooperate the Government and act as an ambassador of peace. A small step of positive action today will impact good things tomorrow.

In conclusion, we must keep reminding to ourselves that our life is too short to live.

Spread love, kindness, peace and forgiveness whilst enjoy, pray, celebrate, sing, laugh, dance and live our life like a ‘Heaven on Earth’.

that more than 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic has been produced since the early 1950s, out of which only 9 percent have been recycled while 12 percent have been incinerated. The rest have become waste, accumulating in landfills and oceans.

Our obsession for plastic products has become a nightmare, both in terms its environmental impacts and policy regulations to tackle its production and use. Despite the mounting challenges, there is a growing consciousness among the global community on the urgent need to contain this plastic menace. In the last decade alone, dozens of national and local governments around the world have adopted policies to reduce the use of disposable plastic. A report entitled “Legal Limits on Single-Use Plastics and Microplastics” released by United Nations and World Resource Institute in December 2018 states that, as of July 2018, 127 out of 192 countries reviewed, have adopted some form of legislation to regulate plastic bags. The report says that the regulations vary considerably, however, the most common form is the restriction on free retail distribution. Twenty-seven countries have instituted taxes on the manufacture and production of plastic bags while 30 countries charge consumers fees for plastic bags at the national level.

Neiphiu Rio, the Chief Minister of Nagaland, on June 5 2018,has vouched for a plastic free Nagaland by 1st December 2018. Though a blanket ban could not be enforced yet, the government and its agencies are working hard to create a plastic free Nagaland. In line with the

state government policy, the Wokha Town Council, on 20thMay2019, has banned all single use plastics, including plastic bags of less than 50 microns, Styrofoamproducts, cups and cutlery with immediate effect. These are steps in the right direction and must be supported by all citizens.

Several governments, including Denmark and Ireland, has imposed plastic tax to curb its use and have succeeded. The rationale is that, if tax is imposed on plastics, which otherwise comes for free, more people will stop throwing away the plastic bags but instead re-use them or bring their own reusable bags for shopping. In Ireland, the plastic tax has led to a 90 percent decline in use of plastic bags and generated over $ 9 million, which was used to fund environmental projects.

Few years back, the Kohima Municipal Council has also imposed some tax on plastic bags, but the tax was discontinued after sometime probably due to complaints and noncompliance from the public and traders.

Any policy regulation requires the support and cooperation of the citizens for its successful implementation. An informed and educated citizenry can easily grasp the intent and purpose of any proposed policy, hence they may reject or accept such policy faster and in an orderly manner.

However, when the quality of the human capital is low, it takes longer period of time and effort to embrace or adapt to new policies and ideas. Hence, effective and extensive public awareness campaigns are needed to shape opinions, change lifestyles and to enforce compliance.

In case, when taxation do not generate the desired effect, government may direct the retailers to provide cash benefits to consumers who choose not to take any plastic bags. Such cash benefits could range from Rs 1 to 10 depending on the value or size of the consumer’s basket. Cash incentives couldencourage consumers to refuse plastic or bring their own reusable carry bags, whichwould reduce the demand for plasticsand also promote a culture of ethical lifestyle. This could be implemented on experimental basis in bigger malls such as Vishal, Big Bazar, Westside etc.

Another way of reducing the use of disposable plastic products is to invest in their alternatives. Government offices and institutions, hotels and restaurants, village bodies, churches, NGOs and civil organisations may be encouraged or enforced to purchase reusable cups and glasses, plates, water filters etc. so that use of disposable items could be minimized. This is crucial because unless the state leads by example, it will be hard for fellow citizens to follow its policies. Such decision will require substantial initial investment. However, the investment will pay off in the long run as budgetary expenses for purchase of disposable products will diminish overtime.

The ban on single use plastic products should also be accompanied by campaign against littering and random disposal of solid waste. Cleanliness is a good indicator to judge the nature and culture of the people in any society. Our streets and surroundings tell our story to any onlookers. Hence, awareness campaigns along

with penalty may be imposed for littering and spitting in public places. Municipal bodies also need to be strengthened to handle and manage waste responsibly in all stages of collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste.

Lessons can be drawn from our neighboring Himalayan kingdom, Bhutan, on how they manage their economy sustainably and keep their cities clean.

Bhutan is a carbon negative economy and is one of the cleanest countries in Asia.

Plastics are being used in Bhutan, yetnot a speck of plastic waste or garbage are found in the streets or roadsides across the country.

All this was possible because the citizens abidethe law and respects the authority.

Conversely, the royals and government officials also set high moral standards for the citizens to emulate. The end result is a productive collaboration.

Recently, Nagaland was also influenced by the popular trashtag challenge, where in, many young people take a photo of an area that needs some cleaning up and then take a photo after cleaning up the area. These are healthy signs that tells how our youths and children yearns to grow up in a healthy environment. The war on plastics and clean environment have just begun.

It could take time to change our habits and lifestyles.

Yet we must not linger, we must not stop. For as Van Gogh says “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together. And great things are not something accidental, but must certainly be willed”.

Terrorism – the misreading

t is a well-known fact, one of the serious threats facing our world today, among many others, is the threat of terrorism which has terrorized people’s mind. It has instilled fear and apprehension in people’s daily activities which is a huge threat towards peaceful co-existence, and a challenge more especially in achieving world peace and stability.

However, the concept of terrorism as a threat today has been viewed very narrowly and one-sided. The idea and presupposition that terrorism can be defeated by killing terrorist or people who are involved in terror activities, which is often described as “counter-terrorism” or “war against terrorism” is largely a misconception. While it cannot be explicitly denied how counter-terrorism measures through use of arms and ammunition, has played a vital role in protecting people’s live in the immediate time-frame of the conflict, yet if we takes the longer aspect of combating terrorism, the use of armed forces is a side of a story which explains a very small part in combating terrorism. And the other side, which should form a much bigger portion of our understanding about terrorism, is often largely missing.

Terrorism can be defined in many ways but derivatively, the root of the word “terrorism” comes from the Latin term which means “To frighten”.

Therefore literally, terrorism is the use of violence and intimidation to instill fear, against certain group of people, intended to demand or fulfil certain interest.

Just like there is a saying, war did not really start with guns and missiles but by hatred, hate speeches, one nation hating another, and one religion despising the other, terrorism as well, did not start with suicidebombers, hijacking planes or killing innocent children in schools. It started with false/ erroneous philosophy and religious teachings, ignorance of the so-called civilized citizens, the government and bureaucrats

being unable to pay heed to the needs of the less fortunate, politicians being insensitive to those living in poverty blurred by ego and self-promotion, society labeling one person as lower class and the other as higher class, and every tagline that has to do with every kind of division failing to realize that we are all humans before anything else – before caste, before class, before religion and before any division. Terrorism per se, without options, emerged not necessarily intended to inflict evil and to torture people out of hatred, but an inner urge, a quiet voice deep inside, roaring in disguise, whispering for fairness, equality, compassion, love, kindness, egalitarianism and an inner desire to be heard and understood.

Terrorism, if seen in the longer lens, beyond why we ordinarily think why terrorism exist today, most of which points to religious extremist teaching, it can be much deeper and beyond religious philosophy. While not denying the fact that religion and intolerance has played its part, there are as well vast ocean of other factors which can be the cause of terrorism and which makes one easily fall into the prey of being a terrorist. The notion and idea of terrorism can be influenced by poverty, depression, failure of morality, etc.

If the popular notion of combating terrorism was to end by killing terrorist, it should have seen a decline of terrorism, at least if not faded, when Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda was killed by the US Navy SEAL and buried in the sea. But quite in contrary, after years of Osama bin Laden’s death, it is said terrorism has increased threefold today. Therefore, it’s worth pondering, “Was the use of arms and ammunition worth it all?” The answer bends halfway towards ‘No’.

If we are fighting against terrorism, we are to fight the root causes of it, and not necessarily the end result. And when we say the root causes, it is the

lack of education, it is the lack of proper upbringing at home, it is the lack of compassion in the society, it is the inability of the civilized ones to look after the less fortunate, it is the idea that one religion is somehow above the other, driven largely, by radical extremist religious philosophy. And therefore, it is important that we up-root the root of terrorism and not cut its stem frequently which in itself will only grow back.

The radical philosophy of religious extremism overlooks the basic principle of religion in itself because religion is never a tool or a baseline to fight another person. If it was anything, men invented it and somehow pulled the adage of religion towards it.

Consequently, killing the terrorist doesn’t contain the threat or ‘terrorism’ cannot be defeated by killing terrorist. It may contain the threat for a short period of time but in the longer run, it definitely doesn’t contain the threat or put an end to terrorism. If we keep fighting with arms and ammunition against terrorist, the war with terrorism looks like a plan to fight for forever. It has long been said, fire cannot be contained with fire, hatred cannot be contained with bigger hatred.

They need alternate solution.

Fire can be contained with solutions like water, and hate can be contained with love and compassion.

In this regard, the path towards combating terrorism needs a course correction from its conventional means. First, to root-out the inner terrorist inside the mind of people involved in terror activities through rigorous education.

Second, to look at religion in a more liberal perspective rather than from extreme fundamentalist point of view, so as to respect another person’s faith. Third, to strive ceaselessly towards an inclusive and fairer society through ethical means, driven by care for the less fortunate. If for anything that we know, we know that the world would be a better place if we could bring out the better side of each other.

Therefore, it is the self within the person that we need to fight against, stronger than the external ones with guns and bombs. We need to fight with the tool of Education. We need to educate the hearts and minds of the younger generation with compassion, empathy, love and kindness. Let us fight against the deeper idea and concept of terrorism not the terrorist if we can draw a line between it.

SC declines to hear ex-Kolkata top cop’s plea New Delhi, May 24 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar’s plea seeking extension of the protection granted to him from arrest in the Saradha chit fund scam case. His protection from arrest ends today. Rejecting the plea, an apex court bench observed that Kumar’s plea was not maintainable in court and it would not waste time on it.

The court asked Kumar’s counsel to move a competent court in West Bengal, as the other courts in the state were functional and judges were conducting hearings in cases. Kumar’s counsel argued that the lawyers’ strike in Kolkata was still on and the courts there were still not functional, and in such a scenario, he could only move the top court.

Karnataka’s JD-S new MP Prajwal offers to resign Bengaluru, May 24 (IANS): Newly-elected Lok Sabha member Prajwal Revanna of the ruling Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) on Friday offered to resign from the Hassan parliamentary seat to get his grandfather and party’s supremo H.D. Deve Gowda re-elected.

“As my grandfather is the founder and builder of the JD-S, I want to resign and get him re-elected from the Hassan seat through a bye-election,” a pensive Prajwal told reporters at Hassan, about 180km from here.

Prajwal Revanna, 29, won the prestigious Hassan seat on Thursday, defeating A. Manju of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with a margin of 1,41,324 votes.

“As it was the party’s high command which gave the ticket for Prajwal to contest from Hassan, it will discuss the issue and decide if he should resign, because he got elected on Thursday and is yet to take oath as a Lok Sabha member,” said Babu.

The JD-S high command is likely to meet here later in the day to analyse its poll debacle in alliance with the Congress.

Of the 28 Lok Sabha seats in the southern state, a resurgent BJP won 25 of the 27 it contested, while the JD-S, the Congress and an Independent, supported by the BJP, won single seat each.

Mumbai, May 24 (PTI): After rising for the past few weeks, the country’s foreign exchange reserves declined USD 2.057 billion to USD 417.998 billion in the week to May 17 on account of a fall in foreign currency assets, RBI data showed Friday.

In the previous week, the reserves had risen by USD 1.368 billion to reach USD 420.055 billion.

In the reporting week, foreign currency assets, which are a major component of the overall reserves, decreased by USD 2.030 billion to USD 390.197 billion.

Expressed in dollar terms, foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation/depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and the yen held in the reserves.

Gold reserves remained unchanged at USD 23.021 billion, according to the data.

The special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund fell by USD 9.8 million to USD 1.444 billion.

L o n d o n , M ay 2 4 (IANS): UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Friday that she will step down as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on June 7, paving the way for a leadership battle to appoint Britain’s next Prime Minister.

May, who has come under increased pressure from her own party to announce her departure date amid internal schisms over her handling of Brexit, gave a speech outside Downing Street after meeting with her government’s Chief Whip Julian Smith, the lawmaker in charge of trying to keep party unity in Parliament.

Fighting tears, May said: “I believe it was right to persevere even when the odds against success were high. But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interest of the country for a new Prime Minister to lead that effort.

“So I am today an-

nouncing that I will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on 7th of June, so that a successor can be chosen, I’ve agreed... that the process for electing a new leader should begin in the following week.

“It is and will always remain a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit.

It will be for my successor to seek a way forward that honours the referendum. To lead, he or she will have to find consensus in parliament where I have not.”

May’s Brexit withdrawal bill has been rejected three times in the House of Commons.

Her voice croaked as she ended her speech saying: “I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold. The second female prime minister, but certainly not the last.

“I do so with no ill will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the

The European Union said Friday that Prime Minister Theresa May’s resignation does nothing to change its position on the Brexit withdrawal deal that its members agreed with Britain.

EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker noted May’s decision “without personal joy,” a spokeswoman said, adding that the council of EU leaders has “set out its position” on the Brexit deal.

Some of the candidates to replace May as leader of the Conservative Party and thus prime minister have said they would seek to change the terms of the divorce deal she negotiated.

But commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva old reporters that the other 27 EU leaders had approved the deal as it stands and that there are no plans to re-open its terms.

As has long been the case, Brussels could envisage modifying a nonbinding political declara-

tion that accompanies the Brexit treaty to flesh out ambitions for future EUUK ties.

But the withdrawal agreement, which May tried and failed three times to get past the British parliament, is not up for renegotiation, Andreeva said, reiterating the EU stance.

Juncker, she said, “very much liked and appreciated working with Prime Minister May and, as he as said before, Theresa May is a woman of courage for whom he has great respect.

“He will equally respect and establish working relations with any new prime minister, whoever they may be, without stoping his conversations with Prime Minister May,” she said.

“Our position on the Withdrawal Agreement and anything else has been set out by Margaritis yesterday. There is no change to that,” she added, referring to chief EU spokesman Margaritis Schinas.

Q ue t t a , M ay 2 4 (IANS): Two people were killed and 15 others injured in a blast inside a mosque in Pakistan’s Quetta city during the Friday prayers.

The explosion took place in the Rehmania mosque located in the city’s Pashtoonabad area, reports Dawn news. No one has claimed responsibility for the incident yet. Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani condemned the blast and ordered a report on the incident.

This is the fifth attack in Balochistan since the beginning of Ramazan. On May 11, five people were killed in a terror attack targeting the Pearl Continental hotel in Gwadar. Less than a week later, 14 passengers were off-loaded from a passenger bus on the Makran Coastal Highway and shot dead by unidentified assailants.

On May 9, a tribal elder and two others were killed in a blast in Qilla Abdullah, and on May 10, two coal miners and three Frontier Corps personnel died in a blast in Khost. On April 12, 20 people were killed and 48 others injured in the Hazarganji market blast targeting Quetta’s Hazara community.

US files 17 new charges against Assange

Washington, May 24 (IANS): The US Justice Department has filed 17 new charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is currently facing extradition from the UK, under the Espionage Act for his role in unlawfully encouraging, receiving and publishing national defence information in concert with former American Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.

Traditionally, the Justice Department has prosecuted government officials who leak classified information, but Thursday’s announcement that a federal grand jury had returned a fresh indictment against the distributor of sensitive documents marked the latest

move by President Donald Trump’s administration to crack down on unauthorized disclosure of classified information and press freedoms, CNN reported.

The new 18-count indictment handed down in the Eastern District of Virginia alleges that Assange actively solicited classified information, provoking Manning to obtain thousands of pages of classified material and providing the former with diplomatic State Department cables, Iraq war-related significant activity reports and information related to Guantanamo Bay detainees.

In April, prosecutors in Virginia revealed that Assange had been charged with a single count of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion

related to helping Manning obtain access to Defence Department computers in 2010. WikiLeaks responded to the news of the superseding indictment Thursday in a tweet, saying: “This is madness. It is the end of national security journalism and the First Amendment.”

Barry Pollack, an attorney for Assange, said : “These unprecedented charges demonstrate the gravity of the threat the criminal prosecution of Julian Assange poses to all journalists in their endeavour to inform the public about actions that have been taken by the US government.”

Meanwhile, Assistant Attorney General John Demers, who heads the department’s national security division, said: “Julian Assange is no journalist.”

The Justice Department’s move on Thursday came within a window for the US to submit its formal request outlining all legal charges that Assange would face if he was transferred to the US, CNN reported.

It came also after a top Swedish prosecutor said earlier this month that Sweden would re-open a rape investigation into Assange, which was suspended in 2017. Assange has denied any wrongdoing.

SEOUL, May 24 (Agencies): North Korea said on Friday an “arbitrary and dishonest” U.S. position had resulted in the failure to reach a deal during a second North Korea-U.S. summit, warning the nuclear issue would never be resolved without a new approach.

A spokesman for North Korea’s foreign ministry accused the United States of trying to shift the blame for the breakdown of the summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in February by raising a “completely irrelevant issue”. He did not elaborate.

“The underlying cause of setback of the DPRKU.S. summit talks in Hanoi is the arbitrary and dishonest position taken by the United States, insisting on a method which is totally impossible to get through,” the unidentified spokesman said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

“The United States would not be able to move us even an inch with the device it is now weighing in its mind, and the further its mistrust and hostile acts towards the DPRK grow, the fiercer our reaction will be.”

The official was referring to North Korea by the initials of its official name - the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The statement was the latest criticism of the United States since the failed summit in Vietnam, where Kim had sought sanctions relief in return for the partial dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear programme.

Trump called for a full roadmap for denuclearisation including the transfer of bombs to the United States.

Tension has again mounted in recent weeks.

The North fired short-range missiles early this month and Washington unveiled the seizure of a North Korean ship suspected of illicit coal shipments in breach of sanctions.

giant deposit of water-ice buried within Mars’ surface is evidence of a hidden polar ice cap, scientists say in a new study.

The research comes from radar information gleaned from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and show ice sheets buried in sand that stretch about a mile deep into the planet.

Findings, they say, show conclusive evidence that those ice caps, not unlike Earth’s, wax and wane as a result of the tilt and orbit of the planet.

The amount of ice layered into deposits of sand are so great, scientists say, that if it were melted down, the liquid would form a planet-wide layer of water about 5 feet deep.

‘We didn’t expect to find this much water ice here,’ said Stefano Ner-

planet’s surface, say researchers.

‘Surprisingly, the total volume of water locked up in these buried polar deposits is roughly the same as all the water ice known to exist in glaciers and buried ice layers at lower latitudes on Mars, and they are approximately the same age,’ Nerozzi said.

Research has implications on not only how Mars looks today, but also how the red planet’s climate may have, in the past, been conducive to life as we know it on Earth.

‘Understanding how much water was available globally versus what’s trapped in the poles is important if you’re going to have liquid water on Mars,’ Nerozzi said.

‘You can have all the right conditions for life, but if most of the water is locked up at the poles, then it becomes difficult to have sufficient amounts of liquid water near the equator.’

As the prospects of human space colonization become more and more serious, the habitability of Mars by humans is becoming an area of greater interest by bother private and public parties.

A year has passed since Wenger left Arsenal and the Frenchman initially felt he would soon be back in a dugout elsewhere.

The 69-year-old has had offers from all over the world during that 12 months, with Ligue 1 side Lyon the latest in a long line of clubs linked.

Yet Wenger’s focus has shifted considerably since his emotional farewell from the Emirates.

“I worked for 40 years in management. You can-

ITF announces changes to World Tennis Tour

L ONDON , M ay 2 4 (Agencies): The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced a major change to “optimise” the structure of lower-rung professional tournaments, six months after launching the World Tennis Tour.

The change will mean ATP and WTA ranking points will once again be available to players competing in ITF $15,000 events — the entry level for professional players.

Additional ranking points will be available at men’s $25,000 tournaments while qualifying draws will be increased.

From August, ranking lists will be updated to reward players who were not allocated ATP and WTA points in ITF-level tournaments played in the past 12 months.

One major criticism of the World Tennis Tour was that there were separate

rankings lists and fewer playing opportunities, leading to a petition signed by around 15,000 people.

There will now be one ranking system for men’s and women’s professional tennis, meaning a smoother transition for players moving up through the system, the ITF said.

“Collaborating further with the ATP and WTA, our goal is to ensure the professional pathway from juniors to professional tennis is fit for purpose,” ITF president David Haggerty said.

“These additional reforms to the pathway will further strengthen the new structure introduced in 2019, that in turn will create a true professional group of players, increase playing opportunities at all levels of the game, and help widen the number of nations hosting professional tournaments so that tennis can remain a truly global sport.”

No Test in Durban during England tour of South Africa

Johannesburg, May 24 (IANS): Cricket South Africa on Friday announced the home international fixtures for the 2019-20 summer which includes series against England and Australia.

England will be touring South Africa for four Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is to be played from December 17, 2019 to February 16, 2020, said CSA in a media release.

Guwahati, May 24 (PTI): Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom and the seasoned L Sarita Devi spearheaded India’s gold rush at the second India Open boxing tournament, which concluded on Friday.

‘Working with ISL, I-League clubs will be key’ New Delhi, May 24 (IANS): India’s newly appointed men’s football coach Igor Stimac on Friday said finding a balance between I-League clubs and Indian Super League franchises and using the resources both sides possess will be key to furthering football in the country. “We need to work together,” said Stimac in his first interaction with the media since his appointment.

Stating that the ISL is a privately owned league and it’s normal if investors are looking to make gains, Stimac said: “But I-League has something that the ISL cannot buy -- tradition.”

Stimac said the presence of the two leagues was good for him because of the talent pool they offered. “The ISL is were most of the competitive stuff is while most of the young players are developing in the I-League and that is good

With speculation being rife of Indian Super League set to be made the top flight of the Indian football, I-League clubs in a letter demanded clarity from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on their future. Metha in his address lauded the NWA officials for organising the symposium to promote Naga traditional wrestling. In modern society, traditional sports have become very popular and important competitive event and for Nagas, traditional wrestling is one of such sports, said Metha.

The guest speaker said Nagas should promote traditional wrestling and make more popular and attractive to the outside world. He also reminded

that Naga traditional wrestling is the celebration of Naga culture and heritage and should focus on spreading across the country and abroad like taekwondo and Sumo wrestling. While encouraging the NWA officials to document the Naga traditional wrestling, Metha also assured government’s support to promote the Naga wrestling.

Former president of NWA, Kuhupoyo Puro urged the gathering to introspect the achievements of the association in its 20 years of affiliation to wrestling federation of India. He encouraged the gathering to train young people to be professional and bring laurel to the state.

He suggested the need to have three tournaments yearly for sub-junior, junior and senior to promote the game.

KOHIMA, May 24 (NPN): In a major boost for the Nagaland badminton players, Nagaland Badminton Club under the aegis of Nagaland Badminton Association is introducing the 1st Nagaland Premier Badminton League 2019. The league will be played from May 29 to 31 at Indoor Badminton Stadium, Kohima.

A total of six teams are in fray for the championship which carries a total cash prize of Rs 2,30,000 along with trophy and certificate for the winner and runnerup. There will also be individual awards for player of

the league and most promising player.

Addressing a press conference in Kohima, Nagaland Badminton Club president, Er. John Metha said the league is being introduced to promote badminton in the state and also to give platform to young upcoming talents.

The league will be played on best of seven matches. Teams with the highest points will qualify for the semi-finals-cum-knock out round. The matches will be played in best of three games of 21 points from the knock-out stage.

The categories of the league are U-15 boys single, U-17 girls single, U-19 boys doubles, men’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles (men 40+ and open for women) and men’s 85+ doubles. The league will follow the rules and guidelines of Badminton World Federation and Badminton Association of India.

The participating teams are Raging Phoenix from Kohima, Panama Shuttlers from Mon, Shuttle Rockers from Dimapur, All Bests Kohima, Kohima Smashers, Beits Badminton Club Kohima.
