22 killed, 59 injured in UK terror attack MANCHESTER/LONDON, MAY 23 (AGENCIES): A 22-year-old Libyan-origin suicide bomber set off a powerful homemade bomb at a concert of US pop star Ariana Grande in Manchester, killing at least 22 people and injuring 59 others, in the deadliest terror attack in Britain since the 2005 London bombings. Greater Manchester Police identified the attacker as Salman Abedi. Born in Manchester, he is the second youngest among four children of a Libyan refugee couple who came to the UK to escape the Gaddafi regime, media reports here said. Greater Manchester Police said the suspect is yet to be named by the coroner and therefore cannot release any further details about him at this stage. “A 23-year-old man from Manchester has so far been arrested in connection with the bombing. We have also enforced warrants at two addresses in the city,” said Greater Manchester Police chief constable Ian Hopkins. Local reports and reports from US authorities have claimed that Abedi was

Don’t impose, but encourage Hindi teaching: HRD panel NEW DELHI, MAY 23 ( AG E N C I E S ) : S t a t e s should be encouraged to “voluntarily” include Hindi in the curriculum instead of “compulsorily” teaching the language, the Hindi Advisory Committee of the HRD Ministry has recommended. The recommendation comes following deliberations on a presidential order last month asking the ministry to consult states on making Hindi compulsory till class 10 in school saffiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Kendriya Vidyalyas, a move which was criticized by several non-Hindi speaking states. President Pranab Mukherjee had given his nod to the commendations of the Committee of Parliament on Official Language. “In a meeting of the Hindi Advisory Committee, the members were of the view that instead of giving instructions or directions about teaching Hindi compulsorily in class 9 and10, the states should encourage teachers to teach Hindi voluntarily,” a senior official of the Human Resource Development Ministry said.

a British citizen who was known to authorities. Abedi is believed to have boarded a train from London to Manchester to carry out the attack. Armed officers raided Abedi’s home in Manchester and ordered residents to stay indoors in the Fallowfield area as they carried out a controlled explosion to gain entry. Abedi is registered as living at the residence and the property is now believed to be the centre of the investigation. The powerful homemade bomb was set off at the concert of Grande

in Manchester city late last night. At least 22 people were killed and 59 others injured in the deadliest terror attack in Britain since the 2005 London bombings. Eyewitnesses said the explosion was heard after the artist had finished her show and left the stage. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud “bang” from inside the venue. Video footage from the scene showed bloodied victims being helped by emergency services. The Islamic State terror group today claimed responsibility for the bombing and

warned of more attacks. The group said in a statement on its social media sites that “one of the caliphate’s soldiers placed bombs among the crowds.” Manchester city centre is getting ready to hold a vigil as a show of unity with those affected by the blast. Prime Minister Theresa May said the people of Manchester have fallen victim to a “callous terrorist attack”. After chairing a Cobra (Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms) meeting here in the wake of the blast, May said

Nagas in Arunachal ask Centre to intervene over autonomous council New Delhi, May 23 (IANS): The Naga community in Arunachal Pradesh has urged the Centre to intervene in the longdelayed matter of granting autonomous council status to Tirap, Changlang and Longding (TCL) districts, so that these areas can see socio-economic development. Alleging that the Arunachal Pradesh government was denying the Nagas their genuine demand, the community said they had waited for too long to see development in the districts, and felt the area could develop only under an autonomous council. “The central government must immediately constitute a committee to find out the real problem faced by the Nagas and support the autonomous council demand,” a statement issued by the affected Nagas in TCL areas said. The Nagas hoped that intervention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would “heal the sufferings of our people” caused

due to under-development of the TCL area. According to the community, their demand for an autonomous council, which could focus on the development of TCL areas, is deliberately being sidelined by the Pema Khandu government in Arunachal Pradesh. The community has questioned the state government’s intentions in view of lack of initiatives towards provision of basic facilities like education, health and roads for Tirap, Changlang and Longding areas. “While our brothers in Nagaland are enjoying a full-fledged state with a special status, we have been left in the lurch to fend for ourselves. We feel dejected because of the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards our grievances,” said the statement. A new students’ wing has also been formed to push for the demand of autonomous council for the Nagas in Arunachal Pradesh.

a single terrorist detonated a device near the exit, at a time and place intended to cause maximum injuries. Screaming concertgoers, including children fled the venue last night in panic after the powerful blast struck the Manchester Arena -- Europe’s largest indoor arena. Children and teenagers were among the dead because of the very young demographic of the pop star’s fans. Prime Minister May said if others are responsible for the attack, they will be brought to justice. “Our way of life will always prevail,” she asserted. Queen Elizabeth II condemned the attack as an act of “barbarity”. The blast comes just weeks before the snap UK general election, campaigning for which was hotting up over the issue of Brexit -- the UK’s exit from the European Union. However, both May and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn suspended election campaign after the Manchester attack. US President Donald Trump condemned the incident saying, “evil losers” behind the bomb attack.

PB Acharya pitches for use of mother tongue in primary schools Correspondent

K O H I M A , M AY 2 3 (NPN): Nagaland governor, PB Acharya, on Tuesday pitched for introducing mother tongue as the medium of instruction at primary schools. Addressing the 47th Tenyidie Annual Seminar held at Ura Academy Badi Kohima on Tuesday as chief guest, the governor stressed on the importance of mother tongue and said that language has power to bring souls together and urged all to respect and make proud of the language. Acharya said mother tongue would vanish if it was not given due attention. Governor congratulated Ura president and chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, for his significant contribution towards the progress of Tenyidie language and literature. He also congratulated the government of Nagaland for the implementation of the three-language policy to preserve, protect and promote the local Naga languages besides national language Hindi and English.

Sharing his personal association with the North east people for the last 40 years, the governor said the region has potential to develop with rich natural resources. He called for making Nagaland a strong state with its rich resources and thousands educated youths. Acharya also informed that eight universities in India have introduced four dialects of North east. Challenging the universities, governor said the universities have not addressed the actual problem of the society and urged to do something more. He also appealed to the powerful church body to be an agent change in the state. In his address, state chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, who is also the president of Ura Acade-

my, shared the history of the Tenyidie Pederüchü, which started in 1970. He said that the study of Tenyidie could be traced back to 1939 during the time of the American Missionary Tanquist. He said it was only in 1970 that a renewal study and research on Tenyidie took place, which also led to the development of the language in the academia. Liezietsu lamented that before the 1970s, due to the conflict and national movement, the Tenyimia community could not focus on the development of Tenyidie. However, he said with the efforts of a few elders in times of conflict, work towards the preservation and promotion of Tenyidie continued. He attributed progress of Tenyidie to the elders. Army destroys 3 get life term in `1000 cr NC Hills scam Pak posts; govt GUWAHATI, MAY 23 (IANS): A special National Investigation Agency court here on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment three convicts of the Dima Hasao terror funding case and awarded eight to 12 years’ imprisonment to 11 others convicted in the case. Those three sentenced to life are Niranjan Hojai, commanderin-chief of Dima Halam Daogah (J) militants, the outfit’s chairman Jewel Garlosa, and the then Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Mohet Hojai. The three have also been fined Rs 25,000 each, the NIA advocate in Guwahati said. The two cases were registered in 2009 on allegation of huge amounts of money being siphoned off from the development funds allotted to the NC Hills Council, in connivance with contractors and government servants and the money being sent to the DHD(J) for procurement of arms and ammunition and for terrorist activities. Bijon Mahajan said that they will move the high court against the NIA’s special court pronouncement against Niranjan Hojai. The scam refers to the siphoning off of funds meant for development activities in the North Cachar Hills district (now called Dima Hasao district) to the coffers of the militants, particularly the Dima Halam Daoga (DHD) militants led by its chairman Jewel Gorlocha. The money was used by the militants to procure arms and ammunition to wage war against India. This was the first case to be taken up by the NIA in Assam in 2009. The accused included Jewel

Gorlosa, Niranjan Hojai, Mohet Hojai (former chief executive member NCHAC) and a social welfare department official, R.H. Khan. Granted an interim bail in 2011 by the Gauhati High Court on the condition that they would take part in peace talks with the government, both Gorlocha and Hojai later joined BJP and successfully contested the Dima Hasao District Autonomous Council. Hojai also became the chief executive member of the autonomous council in 2015, when the BJP wrested power from the Congress in the Council.

State BJP reiterates secular credential KTKK dismayed at PWD RASU demands completion of bridge D I M A P U R , M AY 2 3 (NPN): State BJP unit has once again come out to clarify its stand, asserting that the BJP “is a secular political party with its basic philosophy for integral humanism”. BJP media cell said the party’s aim was to establish a democratic state which guarantees to all citizens irrespective of caste, creed or sex, political, social and economic justice, equality of opportunity and liberty of faith and expression. The party believes in the principle of justice, providing good governance and development for all, the media cell stated. Appreciating NBCC for acknowledging its resolution “to safeguard Christian faith and protect the interest of the minorities”, BJP said assured that it would continue to uphold the identity of the Christian faith. It said BJP also respects other religion as the Constitution provides, protect and guar-

antees freedom of religion or faith to every citizen. The party once again clarified that the good governance day, declared by Centre, on December 25 coincided with on former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee’s birthday and Christmas Day. However, BJP unit said the party and the state government observe good governance day either before or after December 25. Further, BJP said this year Centre had declared Digital India day on the occasion of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s birthday (April 14), father of Indian Constitution, which happened to fall on Good Friday. It said since the date of Good Friday changes every year, this year it coincided with Ambedkar’s birthday. It also maintained that the Prime Minister was against the cow vigilantes. The same was also conveyed by union minister Smriti Irani on May 21, at the Indian

Today Editor round table event, the party added. While supporting NBCC’s statement on diversity, BJP also reminded union Home minister Rajnath Singh’s remark at the meeting with Christian leaders organised by the India Christian Council on October 14, 2016 that India was a secular country and tolerance was essential for peaceful existence. “People from all religions live peacefully in India and practise their religion without any fear of discrimination. That is why India is a university of tolerance,” Singh said as quoted by BJP unit. BJP unit said Singh had also reminded that India cannot forget the contribution of Christian to the nation from St. Thomas to Mother Theresa to eradicate the evils from the society and assured that religious persecution will never be allowed and Christians will be protected.

(R&B), contractor

DIMAPUR, MAY 23 (NPN): Khaghaboto Area GBs’ Association (KTKK) said it has taken strong note of the failure of the PWD (Road & Bridges) and the responsible contractor to resolve their differences and resume construction works on the unfinished Shozukhu-Zukihe bridge under Dimapur district. In a press release, KTKK president, Vikato Aye, and general secretary, Khuheto Zhimomi, recalled that on April 18, 2017, the association, through a press statement, had urged both the parties to sort out the differences within 15 days. However, it said that even after the expiry of the deadline, the department and the contractor have failed to respond to its demand. KTKK said the department and the contractor were not at all concerned for the wellbeing of the villagers who have had great expectations from them. Therefore, the association asserted that it has resolved to immediately initiate the resumption of construction works with its own resources and with the support of the public as it had declared on April 18, 2017. In this regard, the association has urged the department and the administration to cooperate in its effort, which it said was for the benefit of the common people at large.

DIMAPUR, MAY 23 (NPN): Expressing dismay over the slow progress of the construction of Doyang RCC bridge near G ove r n o r ’s c a m p Liphanyan, the Ralan Area Student’s Union (RASU) has appealed to the state government to initiate necessary action to complete the work at the earliest. In a press note, The incomplete Doyang RCC bridge near R A S U p r e s i d e n t Governor’s camp, Liphanyan. (RASU) Nchumrhung Lotha said the union inspected the site and was discouraged to see that only three pillars were erected even after the expiry of the construction period. RASU further pointed out that as per the reply of the concern minister, during the last Assembly session, it was made known that an amount of Rs 2214.27 lakhs was sanctioned to the contractor. However, the work done and the amount sanctioned does not tally at all, RASU stated. In this regard, RASU questioned the government as to why the concern department including the Nagaland Foot Hill Road Construction Committee (NFHRCC) and so also the affected Naga tribes were silent. “The project was initiated after much hue and cry, and the said project when completed will benefit the entire Naga tribes,” it added. RASU also questioned the contractor as to why the construction work had stopped this year 2017 when the amount sanctioned, as stated by the minister, was enough to complete the project. K Y M C

MTSWU, SDTWU clarify on SATSU statement

DIMAPUR: Reacting to the press statement by SATSU on the restriction of taxis plying from Manipur, the Mao Tata Sumo Welfare Union (MTSWU) and Senapati District Taxi Welfare Union (SDTWU) held an emergency meeting at Mao town hall to deliberate on the claims put up by SATSU. A press note by MTSWU president Kosiihrii Kenneth, president and SDTWU president, Paode Daonamai stated that the meeting clarified the matter for public consumption. It stated that as per the “so-called July 2010 Agreement came about due to an unfortunate incident involving two individual taxi drivers from Nagaland and another from Manipur”. The release stated that in “order to prevent such incident in the future, an agreement called the 2010 Agreement was reached between the then Southern Drivers Union and Mao Drivers Union”. It stated that in the agreement no mention was made of any condition whatsoever to suggest that Mao taxis would not ply from Kohima to Mao Gate. It also noted that Kohima to Mao Gate route was also an equally vital important for Mao taxis drivers and have not deprived the Southern Angamis of their livelihood by imposing restrictions on their taxis to ply from Mao Gate. Further the press release alleged that the “Mao taxi drivers, taking advantage of the Koziirii-Dziikou

conflict that occurred during the summer of 2015, started plying from Kohima to Mao”. It pointed out that, taking note of the passengers’ woes the then president of ANTA (Mao Unit) wrote a letter to the president of SATSU requesting the resumption of plying their taxis from Mao Gate which was not acknowledged. In this regard, the accusation leveled against the Mao taxi drivers as “taking advantage of the conflict started plying and taking passengers from Kohima to Mao” was totally baseless and false as there was no mention of any restriction in the agreement for Mao taxis to ply from Mao to Kohima and vice versa, stated the release. It further pointed out that as contrary to the claim made by SATSU that “the Southern Angamis Taxis had stopped plying in the route for months” the MTSWU clarified that the service from Kohima to Mao Gate had been disrupted for years now i.e since June 2015 till date. However the SATSU did ply Kohima to Mao line in between on the basis of first come first similar to Mao-Dimapur line for a short period but later ceased to operate on their own, it added. The release also stated that in regard to the meeting convened by SATSU on April 27, 2017, the Mao and Senapati units duly acknowledged that the presidents of Mao and Senapati units failed to attend the meeting on account of some

unavoidable circumstances but did send their representatives to the said meeting. Having failed to reach an agreement due to the absence of the units presidents, the Mao and Senapati units requested another meeting on May 17 at Bviingho (between Mao gate and Khuzama gate), the release claimed. However, it stated that SATSU failed to attend the meeting, wherein the Mao and Senapati units volunteered to go to SATSU to resolve the matter but SATSU walked out of the meeting failing to reach any agreement. It clarified that as per SATSU president’s statement that “the complication arose because many of the Mao Private Vehicles are used as Taxis, which also led them to restrict all private vehicles carrying passengers,” whereas SATSU allowed their private vehicles to ferry passengers from Khuzama to Mao and Mao to Khuzama without any restriction, which showed that no restrictions had been imposed on anyone by MTSWU and SDTWU. MTSWU and SDTWU stated that Maos and Southern Angamis being blood brothers and would be neighbours for all times, as such, it would be in the best interest of all the parties to come to a mutual understanding and the MTSWU and SDTWU would like to make a stand that whosoever have taxi permits should be allowed to ply their taxis hereafter.

Congress govt failed to protect women: Rahatkar

SHILLONG, May 23 (Agencies): BJP National Mahila Morcha chief Vijaya Rahatkar slammed the ruling Congress government in Meghalaya for its ‘failure’ to protect women and to address crimes against women and children. “On women security, the (Congress) government has failed totally. Statistics show that in the period between April and May, 100 sexual assaults were reported in one month. The worst is that minor girls are raped and tortured,” Rahatkar said while addressing a meeting here. She alleged that 42 minors were raped in the state in the period between January and February. “If someone is sleeping, they can be woken up. But if the government is pretending to be asleep, you cannot wake it up,” Rahatkar said and alleged that the police were not allowed to work freely. Stating that BJP would not tolerate such injustice, she said that the party would form the next government in 2018 in Meghalaya. On Shillong’s waste management index which plunged from 53 last year to 276 this year, the BJP leader said that she was sad because Meghalaya was known for its natural beauty. OFFICE OF THE

that killed woman at Moreh on Monday afternoon. A statement of the UNLF signed by its publicity director M Sak-hen strongly charged involvement of “hired agents” of the Indian Security Forces in the shootout. Residents of Moreh town knew that the act was carried out by agents of the Indian security forces to suppress the freedom struggle of the people of the region and to create fear psychosis to the people of the region, it alleged. Manipuri people, particularly the working class community should condemn such act of the Indian security forces in which a daily wage earner lady was shot dead mercilessly, said that statement. The statement added that the people of Moreh, irrespective of their communities should rise to punish those involved in the heinous crime.

New Delhi, May 23 (PTI): The Delhi High Court today summoned the judicial records of a case in which a trial court had dismissed a plea against Textiles Minister Smriti Irani alleging that she had misrepresented about her educational qualifications before the Election Commission. Justice S P Garg called for records of the trial court, which in October last year had dismissed a complaint against Irani. The court directed that records be produced before it on the next date of hearing on September 13. The court issued the direction on a plea of freelance writer Ahmer Khan, challenging the trial courts decision of October 18 last year by which his complaint was dismissed, holding that it was filed to “needlessly harass” Irani as she was a union minister. While declining to summon her as an accused, the trial court judge had said that there was a “great delay of around 11 years” in filing the complaint. The petitioner said the trial court order was bad in law and it needed to be set aside.

Jadhav is alive: Pakistani envoy New Delhi, May 23 (IANS): Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit on Tuesday said that Kulbhushan Jadhav, the Indian national who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on alleged espionage charges, is alive. “I can assure that he is alive,” Basit said in an interview to CNN News 18 TV channel. He said that an appeal sent by Jadhav’s mother has been passed on by Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale to Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua. Jadhav was allegedly arrested from Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province on March 3, 2016. Pakistan claimed that the former Indian Navy officer confessed in a video that he was involved in spying and terror activities in Balochistan, a charge rejected by India. He was convicted in April by a Pakistani military court and sentenced to death. India has maintained that Jadhav was abducted from Iran, where he was pursuing his business, and passed off as a spy. Earlier this month, India moved the International Court of Justice at The Hague, which then stayed the execution pending a final decision by the court. Basit described

NEW DELHI, May 23 (AGENCIES): An army officer who used a man as human shield in Jammu and Kashmir last month, said today that if he hadn’t done that “at least 12 or more lives” would have been lost, and that “had I fired there would have been many casualties.” The officer, Major Leetul Gogoi, was criticised by many across the country for tying an alleged stone-pelter to the bonnet of a jeep to use him as shield against those pelting stones during a bypoll in J&K. Yesterday, he was awarded the ‘Army Chief Commendation Card for sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations.’ Gogoi said that on April 9, he got a call to check the security situation at a polling station in Budgam. When he went there, he somehow managed to rescue polling staff and was trying to escort them away to safety, but it was proving very difficult in the face of over a 1,000 stone-pelters. Gogoi described how what happened later was not premeditated. “At that time suddenly in my mind, the idea to tie him to the jeep came. Seeing (that I did) this, the stone pelting stopped. Then I got a safe window to come out. These things I’ve done to save the local people. If I had not done it, 12 people would have died,” Gogoi recalled. The Army major further described an extremely fraught situation outside the polling booth. “1,200 people had surrounded the poll station and were trying to burn it with petrol bombs. People were pelting stones from all sides, even women and children, and even people from roof tops,” Major Gogoi recalled in a television interview.

There was no official word on the casualty on the Pakistani side. The Army sources said rocket launchers, anti-tank guided missiles and automatic grenade launchers and recoilless guns were used in the strike. He said as part of the Army’s counterterrorism operations, “punitive fire assaults” across line of control are being undertaken. “Pak Army has been providing support to armed infiltrators by engaging our forward troops from their weapon emplacements and pill-boxes closer to the Line of Control. Army launches punitive fire assaults on Pak posts in LoC

N e w D e l h i , M ay 23(PTI): The Indian Army today said it launched “punitive fire assaults” on Pakistani positions across the Line of Control, inflicting “some damage”, days after two of its troopers were beheaded. It also released a video of the military action which showed some structures in a forested area crumbling in a heap under the impact of repeated shelling. Pakistan Army, however, dismissed as “false”, its Indian counterpart’s assertion of destroying its posts in the Naushera sector. Though the Indian Army did not give much operational details of the retributive assault across the Line of Control (LoC) against Pakistan Army positions in Naushera sector of Jammu and Kashmir which were “aiding” infiltration, sources in the force said the strike was carried out on May 9, nine days after two Indian security personnel were beheaded. “A recent action by our troops in the Naushera Sector has caused some damage to the Pak Army

Government jobs

ppointments to various posts in the government has come under scanner for questionable practices and the nascent Nagaland Congress has been on the job through RTI applications and then bringing them to public domain. In its latest revelation, Nagaland Congress highlighted how appointments in the Agriculture department have wilfully short circuited the laid down procedures. According to Nagaland Congress, the process of recruitment as on October 13,2016 revealed that only 10% were recruited through NPSC and that 90% were recruited through highly “questionable departmental process”. Even a cursory glance at the district-wise breakup given by the Nagaland Congress; it indicates that by and large, hardly 12% of the employees were recruited through NPSC and the remaining through backdoor. In some districts, the percentage was as low as 3% through NPSC. Nagaland Congress has been highlighting “questionable practices” which are no less than illegal and therefore, need to be put in perspective. If departments felt that they can recruit on their own without NPSC then the government authorities should decide if it is permissible. There can be no two ways about what is within and beyond the rule and the state government must respond. The problem of unemployment in Nagaland cannot be solved through unfair and illegal means of appointment. Those who have earned their degrees after years of study and financial investment of their parents, have as much right as anybody to be given a fair opportunity to appear a competitive examination. It is unfair that some candidates are chosen and given jobs because of whatever reasons. All these have only created a situation in Nagaland where appointments have been far in excess of requirement. Sometimes one wonders whether those who indulge in the blatant illegal appointments ever think of the consequences? According to official sources, the ‘excess’ number of employees in Nagaland is around 70,000; which is 50% of around 1,40,000 government employees. The figure of ‘excess’ employment is based on the recommendation of the 13th Finance Commission that the salary component ought to be well within 35% of the budget. However the figure of excess number of employees continued to rise from around 40,000 to 50,000 and now to 70,000. In 2011-12, the total number of state government employees was 1,10,038 which leapfrogged to 1,20,819 by 2012-13, revealing an increase of 10,781 employees appointed within a year. By 2013-14. Further it was also revealed that another 4791 employees were appointed taking the figure to 1,25,309 serving employees during the same period. The state then had an excess of 54,689 employees and this has shot up to around 70,000. Whether the figures are highly accurate or grossly inaccurate matters little but the fact that the number of appointments have been on a high rise. Unfortunately, the salary expenditure automatically increases and inversely decreases whatever left, for development. If the number continues to increase, then it will lead to a very problematic situation for the government. Unfortunately, there seem to be no political will to steer the state away from such a situation. Nagaland can no longer afford so many employees, many of who are without much work. The population is growing and so also poverty. That is not a good recipe for any dream of economic development.

DailyDevotion Our Careful Unbelief …do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. —Matthew 6:25 Jesus summed up commonsense carefulness in the life of a disciple as unbelief. If we have received the Spirit of God, He will squeeze right through our lives, as if to ask, “Now where do I come into this relationship, this vacation you have planned, or these new books you want to read?” And He always presses the point until we learn to make Him our first consideration. Whenever we put other things first, there is confusion. “…do not worry about your life….” Don’t take the pressure of your provision upon yourself. It is not only wrong to worry, it is unbelief; worrying means we do not believe that God can look after the practical details of our lives, and it is never anything but those details that worry us. Have you ever noticed what Jesus said would choke the Word He puts in us? Is it the devil? No— “the cares of this world” (Matthew 13:22). It is always our little worries. We say, “I will not trust when I cannot see”— and that is where unbelief begins. The only cure for unbelief is obedience to the Spirit. The greatest word of Jesus to His disciples is abandon.

Post-mortem Nagaland education system: A product Decide your future of quantity against quality education

xams, stress, results, these have been the recent case scenario in Nagaland, with the declaration of the recent HSLC and HSSLC examination results there has been the yearly tension among the students and their parents. Some students have done extremely well and have aced their subjects but for some it has been an utter disappointment, but this is not the end of everything- it’s just the beginning. Now you must analyse everything in a new perspective and take each step carefully. Everyone has to be aware of their situation and act accordingly, the schools/colleges that you choose does not only give you the education for the next two or three years but it also decides your future- the personality that you would inherit, the placement that you achieve and the kind of profit that you would attain. This also includes understanding your parents’ view and not being mad at them for not understanding you; it all starts by being grateful and genuine. Friends are important but let them not influence you in the wrong way, there is no such thing as, “This school is cooler than the other”- every school / college is the same it just depends on how you behave and study in it. Not trying to cut off the fun in your college life but now it is time to get serious and start thinking about the future and appropriately plan for it. Someone once said, “Everything depends on you, whether you want to enjoy now and suffer later or suffer now and enjoy later”. This

cademic session of the students studying in Governments schools is never complete without disruptions by strikes call by SSA/RMSA/HINDI teachers and ANSTA. Only N a g a l a n d G ove r n m e n t Higher Secondary employee Association ( NGHSSEA) is yet to open its account which was nipped from the bud by the Government through the show cause notice served to all the NGHSSEA members personally (to be replied personally) even before the historic strike began. NGHSSEA first ever shot misfired miserably. Education Department marred with water cannons, show cause notice, strikes by most respected teachers of different associations simply suggest that, ALL IS NOT WELL IN THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. The entire imbroglio is the creation of our ignorant and selfish politicians who has turned the entire teachers and students community into a sacrificial lamb for their political gain over the years. 1. Constant SSA/ RMSA/HINDI teachers agitation would have been avoided had the government of the day told them at the time of the appointment that their post are all co-terminus and keep them on a contract basis on a fixed pay instead of tricking the public into believing that the government is creating numerous jobs for the public. Government’s Nightmare will only begin when the centre government stops funding these flagship programmes. That will be a Doomsday. 2. Higher secondary section was introduced in schools without any additional infrastructure, adequate recruitment of PGTs, and without proper study of the local problems, feasibility and actual requirement and student enrollment thus creating innumerable hardships for both the students as well as the school authorities. Till date there are schools which are functioning without PGT in some department. Now who is responsible for the poor results. Unfortunately our politicians have become so immune to the suffering of

puts you into a deep dilemma about what and how will you see yourself after a span of 5-10 years? Do you think success is all you need or is the polishing of the inner self more important? Time does not wait for anyone and so the “Will see what happens when the time comes” attitude won’t work. You are expected to be prepared for the best and to fight through different obstacles all in one. This surely needs some training and practice but the first step is signing up to it, committing yourself 100% in whatever you do. Giving shouldn’t be an optionso start sharing your knowledge and try to think how you should maintain your relationships with others. Be open to learning because you can learn from anyoneanywhere. You just must be respectful and accept it as it is. If you really want to make an identity of your ownhaving a strong will power and dedication does not harm anyone it instead helps you grow as an individual personally and publicly. So, don’t let go of the urge to learn and develop your inner capabilities. There are some who are forbidden from educational knowledge but they fight for their liberty and so should we. If anything restrains the power to us receiving knowledge then we shouldn’t succumb to it. There isn’t an option of succumbing to disappointment or suffering from inequality, all you must do is fight for yourself and it begins by valuing the education that you receive. For those who have missed their chance this time,

it is understood that you are disappointed, frustrated and some of you on the verge of giving up but… these thoughts have to go right away. Learn to channel your frustration in the most positive way possible and make sure that you don’t hurt someone else’s feelings just because you are going through a tough time. It is important that you take good care of your emotional health but it also includes having concern for others too. Sometimes things don’t happen in the first go and that is something thatwe all have experienced since we were small and as a matter of fact we have at some point in life made use of the Trial and Error method; where you try hard to achieve the solution even though you fail several times. So why give up and lose hope when you can prepare for what’s coming next, the next opportunity shouldn’t go wasted and you should give your 100% in showing what you are capable of. The most important fact is that you should choose to follow your heart, if you think that academics isn’t where you would prosper then take up anything that interests you and make yourself shine through it. This does not mean that one would do nothing and let their lives go in vain but it means choosing something that you think best suits you and also that you have the calibre to do so. So take time to think and decide and may the decision that you make help you decide your fate and may you prosper with it. Marina Jose, Intern , D.C. Court Road, Dimapur

agaland has witnessed another great score of passed percentage of the recently declared HSLC and HSSLC examinations. Quantity has increased. The vicious cycle of securing high marks has become more competitive yet quality is still settled to mediocrity. A question to some students on their next plans of higher education. Most know only the basics as arts, science and commerce stream. When education system is only about listening, writing and grading instead of understanding and applying, then education has failed its mission in creating a niche for skilled and employable future. More than 80% of the passed out student are without knowledge of the course to pursue and ignorant of the needful information outside their academic curriculum. A similarity in their responses gathered, most students have zero knowledge about digital technology, accounts, e-books, e-paper, Google info or online application. Classroom teaching, assignments has settled to traditional use of pen and paper. One student said, “I use all the social networking sites, apps and games but use only the textbook for notes and assignments. Teachers usually do not encourage”. “On special occasions some resource persons use PPT in the hall,” another said. Further it is not difficult for them to copy assignments or projects from the textbook itself as topics are simple and related. Many schools do not have a library or hardly use the library. A student said, “We are not allowed to freely access the library, or the computer on any common day.” Most of the HSSLC students choosing the arts stream chose their honour paper from the highest marks secured as it will be less baggage in their graduation course. The obsession for science stream is also no better, aiming to become engineers and doctors. A student securing two distinctions in the HSSLC exams said, he wants to pursue an engineering degree but had no idea what specializations are. Career guidance is important to

The great tamasha department

the commoners that nothing affects them as long as they get their pound of flesh. While there are 4 higher secondary in Kohima town, with some enrollment as low as 50 students in total why there is only 01 in Dimapur (Nagarjan) with total enrollment going up to more than 500 students and more denied due to lack of infrastructure and PGT’s .Why can’t the government upgrade Burma Camp, Purana Bazaar and Diphuphar high schools into higher secondary for the sake of marginalized section of our society. 3. The recent demand of NGHSSEA for bifurcation seems to be justified looking at the way the department has been functioning FUNCTIONLESS, The motivation for any employee be it government or a private sector to work harder and perform better are better pay and perk/privileges, timely increments, timely promotions, seniority list, etc. but when your profession becomes akin to walking in the minefiled, who survives? Who’s next? Total uncertainty, then definitely revolt is bound to Occur. I must say the NGHSSEA is as clueless as the department. It’s a sleeping giant not likely to wake up very soon. One definitely will want to know one’s seniority, timely increments, promotions time zone and charter out the life plans accordingly. When the department fails you on all these fronts, what does it speaks about the government/department? The department seems to have bitten more than it can chew by introducing higher secondary section. It is the prerogative of the government to delegate DDO to any Officer but under which department has it been withdrawn from HOD. If withdrawal of DDO power from 23 GHSS principal was a cost cutting exercise (I don’t see how) why only education dept? Why not in PWD, PHE depts. etc where the Executive Engineers can be a DDO for the entire districts and DC becomes DDO for all other smaller department in the district. Remember the adage “with power comes responsibilities” I doubt if the

responsibilities will remain without power. The Department seems to be gravely concern about money than the actual issues confronting them. The capability, efficiency and administrative acumen of the department is highly questionable . 4. As per the media report the government plan to upgrade the existing 26 SDEO + 11 new SDEO + 11 assistant director all from secondary section to the rank of Deputy Director. By that logic the secondary second will have 48 deputy director rank officers in total with 37 of them as SDEO at the districts/subdivisions. 5. What one fail to understand is when the secondary cadres can become both SDEO and DEO, then why not vice versa for higher secondary cadres, this action of the government defies all logic and rationality, then why not the post of 11 DEO be reserved only for higher secondary cadres just as the way 48 SDEO is reserved only for the secondary section as Higher secondary matters are all related to DEO only. 6. The de par tment doesn’t seem to be on a clear state of mind to say that 40% of JEO/AHM would be filled through examination from amongst senior GT’s and graduate PT’s and PGT’s with 5 yrs service. Please understand PGT’s are young, fresh, and right out of the university , they are Class II gazetted officers qualified through NPSC.. and to pitch them against senior GT’s will be like sending Nepal in a full scale nuclear war against America..Its HANDS DOWN WIN for the PGT’s. Its total injustice for senior GT’s who have served the governments sincerely for so many years. And why add to the confusion by bringing in PGTs to secondary section? How many times will an employee of education department change their seniority in the course of their career? 7. The recent promotion table published in the media by the department deserves the biggest laughter. Please understand that secondary and higher secondary cadres have different entry

level. While the GT’s enter their service as non-gazetted. The PGT are class II gazette officers recruited through NPSC so one cannot equate the two cadres under any circumstances, they have two different entry level, they both deserves equal opportunities and growth in service without one intruding into the area of another. The qualifying years set for the employees at all level of promotions is gross injustice and discriminatory. It should be vacancy plus seniority based. There are officers becoming ADC within 10 to 12 yrs of service and Executive engineers within 15 yrs of service. The time bound method of promotion at all levels is unheard of except in INDIAN ARMY. How can one set 29 yrs service for both secondary and higher secondary cadres as qualifying years to become the Director when the entry level of the two cadres and rank at the time of the entry are different. The department has not done its research properly. What the government has done is simply an invitation of more court cases to its door steps. It’s high time the department start thinking from its head rather them from its Bank balance. If both EAC and SA have to become Deputy Commissioner at the same time, why study so hard to become EAC, study lesser, party harder and become SA as DC post is assured at the same time as the one who start his career as an EAC. 8. There is an urgent requirement of cadre management in the education department to be implemented practically on ground not on paper only to be kept in cold storage. The government cannot keep on taking arbitrary decisions on service matters, The problems in the education departments definitely requires deeper and wider introspection and research vis-à-vis the central government guidelines and practice in other progressive states, short term measure like HPC reports are not an answer to departments like education which not only has one of the largest no of employees but have different cadres of employee so that justice is done to all primary,

nurture students at a young age. The absence of effective career guidance in everyday learning by teachers, parents and elders is observed. Only one among ten teachers sensitize students of the outside knowledge and career opportunities in and outside the state. One student complained of teachers giving more attention to bright students in the class. From time to time, career guidance programmes are held in the school campus but has proved ineffective as in time there is no actual guidance taken place. One student has lauded the YouthNet for the career guidance programme that he indirectly sought direction for a professional course. One trend in the society is doing what everybody does. “The overload of one stream becomes the shortage of another,” Taking the opportunity, a broadminded student said he wanted to pursue a course in Business and e-commerce outside Nagaland more developed but shares a place of similarity as Nagaland has the potential of building its market in the national and global platform. Unemployability is a bigger issue than unemployment which students of this batch do not feel pressured or are unaware. The ignorance of the students has given them a feeling that government and corruption alone is the cause. It is imperative that students have knowledge of practical aspects of the subjects taught. We cannot blame the education system solely for such acute problems. Tapping the grassroot activities of teaching, a teacher plays an instrumental role in building an individual. One school teacher who is in the teaching profession for more than 15 years shared that the present complexities of education system is unable to cope up with a huge number of class. For equipping quality education, her ability is confined to 10 students per class for which government schools have the upper hand currently if they are sincere enough on their part. Ketholeno Neihu & Keneiseno Neihu

secondary and higher secondary cadres. At present the government seems to be functioning on the method of trails and error which is costing the career of many senior officers dearly. For instance, a certain person was serving as a Head master under one principal, within no time this HM became SDEO and later DEO while the principal remained stagnated at the rank of DDEO and started reporting to the officer who has served under him as HM. How does the department explain such promotion policy? Personally I feel the best solution will be to have two different director for secondary and higher secondary section with principal director as HOD. That way 99% of the problems the departments faces at this juncture gets resolved in itself as each cadre will follow their line of seniority and will be confined to their own zone till the director. 9. All said and done, the flip flop orders of the department and its inability to solve professional issues confronting it has proven beyond reasonable doubt that the debacle of the education department is much beyond the mental caliber and solution of the present officers of the department,

let alone the politicians, the lesser said the better about them. Our politicians will not be able to decipher such complex issues. 10. Best solution would be to set up a committee headed by a very competent officer with reasonably good knowledge about the department, be given adequate time to dissect, analyze and study in depth all the cases, flaws and issues confronting the department today, the committee should also hear out the grievances and contentions of all the stake holders, understand the crux of the problem and bring out the most suitable recommendations to kill the issue once and for all. The present imbroglio of the department’s definitely merits a marathon brain storming session for a permanent solution as the problems has compounded over the years due to the inability of the government to dispense the right judgment. It cannot be solved by any bureaucrat within a short stint of their musical chair reshuffle. it will be an herculean task to salvage the education department from the gutter but somebody will have to bell the cat sooner or later. Sir,

An appeal to GREF (BRO) Aghunato

With due respect to your benign authority I would like to state that since the road maintenance was taken over by the GREF department in Aghunato has rapidly progressed. It’s worthy to praise that the road conditions has improved to ply smoothly in all the way from Zunheboto to Aghunato. Such a workmanship which you are rendering in service towards the welfare of general public cannot be compromised at any cost. However, I on behalf of public of Aghunato would like to request your concerned department that the ongoing road black topping is not satisfactory if we compare the previous project which was done by your department. Therefore, it is my humble appeal to your higher authority to look into the matter seriously that if the same quality work could to be done at the present project work for the best services to the people of Aghunato and for the rest of the commuters. Sheipa, Bongtao, Rev. T. Honlong and Hinglong were the speakers. A press note by MTC lecturer Khamhi Konyak stated that minister of Transport, Civil Aviation, IT&C, and Border Affairs P. Paiwang and chairman NPSC A. Yanang were also among the delegates. Minister in his address to the theologians reminded that “theological studies start with the Truth” and therefore he encouraged the theological students to be bold enough to speak out the truth and serve the Lord with full dedication and commitment. He further warned the youth about mushrooming of various de-

nominations due to doctrinal differences and therefore reminded them not to be led astray by those doctrines if the Konyaks wanted to be under one association. Lecturer S. Apang presented a paper on “child labour” and there was a panel of discussion on “clean

election”. Opening ceremony was done by New Life Bible College Dimapur and the conference was closed by Discipleship Bible College Dimapur. Altogether more than 315 Konyak theological students attended the conference.

the next five to seven years, India’s digital economy will be of an estimated $1 trillion, which is almost Rs 600 lakh crore. “In the last three years, almost six lakh people have been employed in our IT sector. In 2016-17, the number of people employed was around 1.7 lakh,” he said. “We have common service centres in about 2.5 lakh cities and almost 10 lakh people are employed there.” The Indian IT companies currently serve two-thirds of the Fortune 500 companies and have created 40 lakh direct jobs in India, the ministry said in a statement. The minister said the IT Ministry has taken note of projections by software industry organisation Nasscom to present an objective and realistic potential of the employment scenario. “Nasscom has confirmed that the industry continues to be a net hirer and reports that 2.5-3 million new jobs will be created by 2025. In 2016-17, the industry added 170,000 new jobs,” the release said.

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS): Denying the reports of a downturn in employment in the country’s IT industry, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday said in the coming four to five years, almost 2025 lakh additional jobs will be created in the sector. “I completely deny and refute that there is any downturn in the employment in the IT sector. It is robust. Once the digital economy is here, you will see how much it will progress,” the Minister said during an interaction with reporters at a press meet in the ministry. “Indian IT companies are spread across 200 cities and 80 countries around the world, which provide direct employment to 40 lakh people and indirect employment to almost 1.3 crore people. As the industry is moving forward, it is Nasscom’s assessment that in the coming four to five years, almost 20-25 lakh additional jobs will be created,” he added. The Minister said in

pending matter, where disclosure of defaulters having dues of over Rs 500 crore towards the banks, was decided by the apex court. The bench, comprising Information Commissioners Manjula Prasher and Sudhir Bhargava, did not accept Agarwal’s plea that a case was already decided by the Supreme Court in which clear directives have been given and is a law of land, and not a pending case. In 2015, the apex court had stated that the RBI is supposed to uphold public interest and not the interest of individual banks. The court had said that the RBI is duty bound to comply with the provisions of the RTI Act.

On the inflation front, D&B estimates excess liquidity in the banking system along with elevated global commodity prices and increase in house rent allowance under the 7th Pay Commission to continue to provide upward pressure to prices. “The base effect along with deflation in the vegetables and pulses section and appreciation in rupee would keep the inflation rate lower in the near term,” the report said. “The CPI inflation is expected to be in the range of 2.3-2.5 per cent and WPI inflation to be in the range of 3.7 - 3.9 per cent during May 2017, respectively,” it said. The report also noted that while rupee continues to remain overvalued, fund inflow from foreign institutional investors and foreign direct investments is expected to keep rupee stable in the near term.

On December 16, 2015 the apex court had clearly rejected these arguments of the RBI, in a matter filed by another RTI applicant, and ordered disclosure of defaulters’ list, upholding a Central Information Commission (CIC) order. Still, the Bankers’ Bank cited same arguments to deny information to Agrawal, who escalated the matter to the CIC. During the hearing, the RBI also said the Supreme Court is hearing a matter in which reports have been sought in a sealed envelop and hence any decision should be avoided. A two-member

The case relates to an RTI application filed by activist Subhash Agrawal who had sought to know the list of people who had defaulted in the loan of Rs one crore and above. According to the government, the gross nonperforming assets (NPA) of the public sector banks stood at Rs 6.06 lakh crore as on December 31, 2016. Mumbai, May 23 (PTI): Weak investment activity is likely to restrain economic growth at 6.6 per cent for the quarter ended March 2017, says a Dun and Bradstreet report. Going forward, normal monsoon is expected to provide the requisite boost to demand, while transition to GST regime is likely to create some disruption and impact the short-term sales volume across businesses. “Weak investment activity as reflected in the subdued capital goods and infrastructure/construction sector output growth is likely to restrain growth,” the report said. According to D&B, the economic growth, as measured by GVA (gross value added), is likely to grow by 6.6 per cent for the fourth quarter of 2016-17, as compared to the same period year-ago. Donald Trump pushes for Middle East peace

President Donald Trump shakes hands with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after making a joint statement in Jerusalem May 22, 2017. (AP/PTI)

JERUSALEM, MAY 23 (AGENCIES): President Donald Trump on Tuesday pushed for elusive peace between Israel and the Palestinians, calling on both sides to put aside the “pain and disagreements of the past.” Trump met with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during his quick stop in the region. Speaking at the Israel Museum, he declared both sides ready to move forward, though there were no tangible signs of the dormant peace process being revived. “Palestinians are ready to reach for peace,” Trump said. Turning to the prime minister, who joined him for the speech, Trump said, “Benjamin Netanyahu wants peace.” A longtime businessman, Trump has cast Middle

East peace as the “ultimate deal” and has tasked his sonin-law Jared Kushner and former real estate lawyer Jason Greenblatt with charting a course forward. Still, White House officials had downplayed the prospects for a breakthrough on this trip, saying it was important to manage their ambitions as they wade into terrain that has tripped up more experienced diplomats. The president notably avoided all of the thorny issues that have stymied peace efforts for decades. He did not weigh in Israeli settlements, the status of Jerusalem or even whether the U.S. would continue to insist on a two-state solution giving the Palestinians sovereign territory. Aides said the approach was purposeful, and the normally free-wheeling Trump was well-aware of the risks of veering off script

on issue where every word is intensely scrutinized. From Israel, Trump was heading to Italy for an audience with Pope Francis. He’ll close his ambitious first foreign trip at a pair of summits in Brussels and Sicily, where his reception from European leaders may be less effusive than his welcome in Israel and Saudi Arabia, his opening stop on the trip. Trump and Netanyahu in particular lavished praise on each other during their multiple meetings. The prime minister, who had a frosty relationship with Trump’s predecessor, leapt to his feet when the president declared Tuesday that his administration “will always stand with Israel.” Yet some Israeli officials are less certain of Trump. He’s taken a tougher than expected line on settlements, saying he doesn’t believe they help the peace process, though he’s stopped short of calling for a full construction freeze. He’s also backed away from his campaign pledge to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, bending to the same security risks as other presidents who have made that promise.

S Korea’s ex-president Park denies charges in graft trial

Park Geun-hye

SEOUL, MAY 23 (IANS): Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Tuesday pleaded innocent to charges of corruption and abuse of power as her trial began here. The conservative former leader -- who faces a life term in jail -- pleaded not guilty to the 18 offences she has been charged with, including abuse of power, coercion, and leaking of official documents, BBC reported. In her first appearance in public since her arrest in March, she arrived at the Seoul Central District Court handcuffed and wearing a badge with her prison number, 503. Park and her friend Choi Soon-sil are accused of extorting around $50 million from some of South Korea’s biggest companies, including Samsung, in return for political favours. Choi, who was dubbed

the Korean Rasputin for her proximity to Park, sat alongside the ousted President at the opening of the trial and denied wrongdoing. Park is also accused of leaking state secrets by giving Choi access to her work, including asking her to edit her speeches, and of running a blacklist of media figures who were to be barred from receiving state support because they had been critical of her government. As the trial opened in Seoul, the ex-President’s lawyers said there was “no reason for President Park to force companies to donate money which she was unable to use for herself ”. When asked for her occupation by judge Kim Se-yun as the trial began, Park replied: “I don’t have any.” Park’s lead lawyer Yoo Yeong-ha, argued much of the evidence presented by t h e p r o s e c u t o r s we r e “merely press articles,” and questioned their admissibility in court as proof of crime. If convicted for the bribery charge, Park would face at least 10 years in prison. Park is the third South Korean leader on trial for corruption but the first democratically elected one.

South Korea fires at suspected drone at border with N Korea SEOUL, MAY 23 (AGENCIES): South Korea’s military fired warning shots at a suspected drone from North Korea on Tuesday amid tension over Pyongyang’s latest missile test which drew international condemnation and a warning from China. The identity of the object remained unclear, the military said, but Yonhap news agency said it was possibly a drone, more than 90 shots were fired in return and it disappeared from radar screens. The incursion came with tension already high on the Korean peninsula after the North’s test-launch of a ballistic missile test on Sunday which Pyongyang said proved advances in its pursuit of building a nucleartipped weapon that can hit U.S. targets. The United States has been trying to persuade China, North Korea’s lone major ally, to do more to rein in North Korea, which has conducted dozens of missile launches and tested two nuclear bombs since the start of last year, in defiance of U.N. Security Council sanctions and resolutions. The North has made no secret of its plans to develop a missile capable of striking the United States and has ignored calls to halt its weapons programs, even from China. It says the pro-

gram is necessary to counter U.S. aggression. “We urge North Korea to not do anything to again violate U.N. Security Council resolutions,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a statement posted on the Foreign Ministry’s website on Tuesday. “At the same time, we hope all parties can maintain restraint, not be influenced by every single incident,...persist in carrying out Security Council resolutions on North Korea and persevere with the resolu-

tion of the issue through peaceful means, dialogue and consultation.” Wang was responding to reporters’ questions on Monday while in Ivory Coast, according to the statement. T h e Ta m i l o u t f i t staged a protest on Monday near Rajinikanth’s residence opposing his likely entry into politics. In retaliation to that protest, Rajinikanth’s supporters held a rally on Tuesday. The fans also criticised Seeman, leader of another Tamil outfit which had opposed Rajinikanth, and attempted to burn his effigy. The police prevented them from doing so. Incidentally, Rajinikanth had praised Seeman in his speech last week.

The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb blast that tore through a crowd of fans leaving an Ariana Grande pop concert in the Manchester Arena, killing 22 persons. The Greater Manchester Police in a tweet said they have arrested a 23-year-old man in South Manchester in connection with the attack. British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the “appalling terrorist attack” and the police said they have identified the attacker but it was too early in the investigation to release his name. Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the bombing and its supporters celebrated the attack on the social media, the Telegraph reported. Isil supporters hailed the bombing as a victory against “the crusaders” of the West. In one video an English-speaking supporter of ISIL held up a home-made sign with the word “Manchester” and the date of the attack.

ccording to CNN, Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell will be laid to rest on May 26 in Los Angeles. His body will be flown from Michigan to Los Angeles on Sunday, and the singer will be buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. A source told CNN: “The family is thinking about a [public] memorial for fans, but is coping now with their loss and the funeral service.” Cornell apparently committed suicide by hanging on Wednesday night (May 18) after Soundgarden played a show in Detroit. He was 52 years old. Cornell’s family issued a statement Friday questioning whether his death by hanging was intentional and if “substances contributed to his demise.” Soundgarden had been working on material for its seventh studio album and had tentatively planned to enter the studio later this year. The band reunited in 2010 after a 13-year hiatus,

merican singer Ariana Grande said she is “broken” after a suicide terror attack hit a stadium in Manchester just as her concert ended, killing 22 persons including children, and has suspended her world tour in its wake. A string of showbiz celebrities from across the world condemned the attack. Tmz.com quoted sources as saying that Grande will not perform at her scheduled performance at The O2 here on Thursday, and has decided for now to put the entire European tour on hold. She was scheduled to perform in England, Belgium, Poland, Germany and Switzerland. “Broken from the bottom of my heart. I am so sorry. I don’t have words,” tweeted the 23-year-old Grammy nominated singer, known mostly for her pop music. The singer’s manager Scooter Braun said in a statement posted on social media: “Tonight our hearts are broken. CM lays foundation stone AIFF vows to raise the bar in hosting U-17 WC for indoor tennis stadium

Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu and others at I.G Stadium Kohima, Tuesday (NP) Correspondent

KO H I M A , M AY 2 3 (NPN): Chief Minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu laid the foundation stone of indoor tennis stadium at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima on Tuesday morning. In a brief programme held at the multipurpose hall after laying the foundation stone, the chief minister congratulated the president and members of the association for their initiative. Tennis game was an elite game some decades back but it has now become a popular game

for many Naga youngsters, said Liezietsu. Encouraging the Naga sports persons he said ‘you have the physical strength and intellectual capability but lack of facilities is hampering the growth of sports even if we have talents’. The government should focus more on providing facilities to the sports persons, he stated. Everyone cannot go to Dimapur to play tennis, I am hopeful that with the development of the Indoor Tennis Stadium in Kohima, it will boost the development of the sport for our people, he said.

Parliamentary secretary for tourism and president Nagaland Lawn Tennis Association (NLTA), C. Apok Jamir said with good infrastructure, the state was expecting to have more sportspersons. Recalling the formation of Nagaland Tennis Association in 1998, he said the association got affiliation to all India tennis association in 1999. After affiliation, the association could send boys to the National Tennis Academy in Gurgaon for in depth training and currently two Naga boys are now playing professionally and one im-

parting coaching in Delhi, said Apok. The association has conducted national level tournaments for the juniors called the talent series and championship series and also started a new initiative called the school tennis where coaches were sent to schools to provide coaching. Currently there are 30 boys and girls who are receiving regular coaching at the tennis complex Dimapur, he added. With the second indoor stadium in the state, Jamir was hopeful that the initiative would definitely benefit the young players and even the old players as tennis is a game played by all age groups. He also appealed the government to set up an academy for tennis to provide coaching to the youth right at a very young age. NEW DELHI, May 23 (PTI): Bracing up to the host the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has vowed to raise the bar for other federations to embrace and emulate. India has had a history of successfully hosting some of the biggest sporting events including multiple cricket World Cups, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. However, it will be the first time a football event of this magnitude will be held in the country. “FIFA U-17 World Cup would usher in a new era in Indian football. We are sure to make all Indians proud of our achievement by setting an example of how an international event of this stature should be organised,” AIFF’s senior vice-president Subrata Dutta told PTI. The experienced football administrator added, “Our endeavour is to deliver the best ever U-17 World Cup.” The mega event will be held from October 6 to 28 across six cities. Niger yesterday completed a 24-team line-up from across six confederations for the upcoming tournament, and almost all the top football nations will be part of the marquee event. The three-week tournament will be played in six venues -- New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Guwahati and Kochi -- with the final slated for Kolkata on October 28. Dutta said the infrastructure for the tournament was nearly complete, a few days after Kochi’s status as one of the host venues was confirmed. With the 24 teams in place, the attention now turns to the official draw, which will take place on July 7 and determine the fixtures for each team. Ticket sales for the tournament have started on a resounding note, with the first phase of seats for Kolkata selling out within hours of becoming available last week. In the first phase after its launch, the venue package tickets for Kolkata were kept at throwaway prices of Rs 480, 960 and 1920 for the 10 matches including the summit clash on October 28. In March, FIFA’s head of events, Jaime Yarza, had promised that a “magnificent” U-17 World Cup be delivered.
