NEW DELHI, MAY 22 (PTI): The Supreme Court Monday came to the rescue of the parents of a youth who was killed in a road rage case in 2011 by the son of Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh by seeking the responses of the Centre and the state on their plea alleging that they feared for their lives. A vacation bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao and Navin Sinha issued notices to the Union Home Secretary and the Manipur Chief Secretary to respond by May 29 on the plea by Irom Chitra Devi, mother of Irom Roger who was killed. The bench did not issue notice to the Chief Minister and others in the case as sought. Ajay Meetai, son of the Chief Minister, has been awarded a five-year jail term under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC for

of appointments. (See Table) Maintaining that there was no rationality under the “so called departmental appointment”, NC said from a high 80% (Longleng) or 74% (Zunheboto) to a low 31% (directorate) or 40% (Dimapur), the nature of departmental appointment only proved manipulative. Likewise, NC said in the case of appointment through NPSC, a low 3% (Kiphire) or 4% (Wokha) to a high 13% (Phek) or 12% (Dimapur) only indicated that it was random done. Further, NC said direct appointments of a high 55% (directorate) or 48% (Dimapur) to a low 16% (Longleng) or 21% (Phek) only spoke about “system-less appointment at will.” NC said it would continue to expose backdoor appointments in departments by bringing out facts and figures. “Youth unrest was a very serious problem but elected government is least concerned,” said NC, urging all serious-minded people to join hands with the party on the task to bring desired change.

firing at Roger in a road rage incident on March 20, 2011, and killing him. The incident had occured after Roger had allegedly not allowed Meetai to overtake him in his SUV which had irked the Chief Minister’s son. The plea, filed through advocate Utsav Bains, alleged that the parents of the victim were fearing for their safety in the state. The parents have sought directions “to provide security for the safety of the life and liberty of petitioners and their family members against any kind of threat and victimisation for their peaceful stay throughout India.” They have also sought a direction for an independent probe by a central agency on the ground that the state police was working at the behest of the convict. A d vo c a t e K a m i n i Jaiswal, who appeared for

on behalf of the parents, also said no lawyer was ready to appear on their behalf before the Manipur High Court which is hearing the criminal appeal against the award of five year jail term to the son of the chief minister. Bains, who went to Manipur to represent the family, has also received threats, she alleged. “ I n J a n u a r y, t h e petitioners (parents) approached several lawyers in the High Court of Manipur at Imphal, to file an appeal against the judgement of the Sessions Judge, Imphal (West), but all the lawyers they approached, refused to represent them due to the influence and clout of the Respondent No 3 (CM), moreso, in view of the fact that nobody could dare to stand-up against the Chief Minister, Home Minister of the State,” the plea said.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has hailed the decision of the Prime Minister. He told ET that this move will go a long way in promoting tourism. Assam unit president of BJP Ranjeet Kumar Das told ET, “Preparation for Lok Sabha polls of 2019 have already started. Modi is likely to sound poll bugle for Lok Sabha polls from Guwahati.” He added, “Over one lakh people will attend the Khanapara rally where the Prime Minister will address the nation.” BJP has won all the elections in Assam since 2014. Das said, “Our party workers are fully geared up to face pachayat polls and corporation poll of Guwahati Municipal Corporation. These elections will be held shortly.”

AKRSU announces 36-hr Assam bandh GUWAHATI, May 22: Irked with the indifferent attitude of the state government towards its demand for formation of a separate state of Kamatapur, the All Assam Koch Rabongshi Students Union (AKRSU) has called for a 36 hours Assam bandh from Thursday (May 25). This was disclosed by the AKRSU during the press meet held at its office at Bongaigaon. Furthermore, a national highway blockade has also been called in Raha on May 25 in protest against the foundation laying ceremony of AIIMS by PM Narendra Modi in Changsari, which was earlier scheduled to be held on May 24. It may be mentioned that the proposed site to set up AIIMS in this area is met with several land related problems as people raises hue and cry over the selection of the proposed site.

NEW DELHI, MAY 22 (PTI): Undertrials accused of crimes carrying a punishment of seven years in jail should be released on bail if have spent one-third of that time, or two-and-half years, behind bars facing trial, the Law Commission will recommend to the government. As part of sweeping changes to make bail easy, the law panel will recommend tweaking Section 436 A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) so that those who are accused of crimes which attract a term of over seven years be released on bail if they have spent half of the term behind bars while facing trial. According to a senior official who is part of the panel, the Commission will also recommend that undertrials who cannot produce a non-monetary surety -- an undertaking by an individual that the undertrial will appear before authorities when required -- be allowed to instead deposit government identity documents such as Aadhar, voter I card or PAN card to get bail. “But what happens if a

person fails to turn up even after depositing the identity document? We are still working on it,” the official said. The new provision, he said, would help those who find it difficult to get a person stand surety for them in an alien city. As of now, Section 436 A of the CrPC deals with the maximum period for which an undertrial prisoner can be detained. As per law, if a person is accused of a crime which is not an offence where the punishment is death, he should be released on bail if he has been in jail for half the period “extending up to one-half of the maximum period of imprisonment specified for that offence under that law”. There are no separate cut-offs as is being recommended by the law panel now. But the reality is that two-thirds of prison inmates in India are undertrials, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has said. In 2016, the government had asked the Law Commission to recommend a new Bail Act. Earlier this

year, it revised its plan saying there was no need for a stand-alone law. The law panel should only recommend changes in the CrPC to make getting bail easy and uniform. In September last year, then Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda had asked then Law Secretary P K Malhotra to ask the Law Commission to recommend a standalone Bail Act to quell the perception that the existing system is “inextricably linked to the financial well-being of the accused”. Gowda had suggested the need for examining the desirability of having a separate Bail Act under a “major revamp” of the bail system. The minister had said bail should be granted as a matter of right and be denied only when there is fear that the accused can tamper with the evidence, influence witnesses or commit more crimes while out of jail. “... the matter has been re-examined by the central government and it has been decided that there may be no need for a stand alone Bail Act,” the ministry later told the Commission.

India a victim of terror: US President Trump

Tells Muslim leaders to ‘drive out’ the terrorists

R I YA D H , M AY 2 2 (AGENCIES): United States President Donald Trump, during his speech at the Arab-Islamic-US summit, acknowledged that India was a victim of terrorism and asked countries to ensure that terror groups don’t find sanctuaries on their soil. The President further pledged to work alongside the West Asian nations to combat extremist ideology in the region as all the countries from the US to India, Australia to Russia - have been “victim of terrorism and have suffered repeated barbaric attacks.” .. Without naming Pakistan, US President Donald Trump said “every country must ensure that terrorists

don’t find any sanctuary on their lands.” While addressing the leaders of 50 Muslim-majority countries on Sunday afternoon in his first speech on a foreign soil, Trump, meanwhile, called on the Middle-eastern countries to combat the crisis of Islamic extremism emanating from the region. Ter ming the fight against terrorism as a “battle between good and evil,” and not a clash between “the West and Islam,” Trump sought to chart a new course for America’s role in the region - aimed at rooting out terrorism. “This is not a battle between different faiths, different sects, or different civilisations,” Trump said. “This is a battle between barbaric criminals who seek to obliterate human life, and decent people of all religions who seek to protect it. This is a battle between good and evil,” he

added. Earlier on Sunday, President Donald Trump offered a message of unity as he called on the Arab world to confront extremism during a highly anticipated speech in the birthplace of Islam. “A better future is only possible if your nations drive out the terrorists and extremists,” Trump told the dozens of Muslim leaders who attended his remarks. “Drive. Them. Out. Drive them out of your places of worship,” the president continued. “Drive them out of your communities. Drive them out of your holy land, and drive them out of his Earth!” Trump said, “This is not a battle between different faiths, different sects, or different civilizations. This is a battle between barbaric criminals who seek to obliterate human life, and decent people of all religions who seek to protect it.”

NPCC to decentralise decision making process: Therie PPC appeals CE PWD (NH) Correspondent

KOHIMA, MAY 22 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has decided to decentralise its programmes and policies so as to allow the people at the grassroots to participate in decision making in the election process. Informing this at the press conference at Congress Bhavan here Monday, NPCC president K. Therie said AICC and PCC are to frame the policies and programmes, ideologies and principles and will impart training according to the need of the districts. He said Assembly Constituency Committees (ACCs) will also be empowered to nominate their respective candidates and there will be no imposition of candidates either from DCC, PCC or AICC. He admitted that there was a big vacuum of leadership in Congress as many

members had defected and said the party want a change in the state thereby opportunity will be given to youths in the coming election. He said the NPCC expected some political changes and the din and dust of ongoing political polarization have not settled down. Therie opined that Naga youth were capable of becoming the best legislators in the nation so the Congress expects them to participate as party candidates in the forthcoming election. He also predicted that due to the churning within Naga society and church and in view of anti-incumbency against the present government, there will be a sizeable shift of votes from the present government to secular forces. Therie maintained that Congress is the only secular party in Nagaland and that the rest such as RSS and its political wing, the BJP are communal.

Further, he also predicted that votes for the present ruling party in Nagaland will be divided into three or four factions and Congress which secured 27.6 % votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha election will gain some percent. Therie said he anticipates vote shift from the NPF due to anti-BJP sentiments of a minimum of 7 to 10%. Coupled with anti-incumbency vote shift of around 3 to 5 %, he said these will together result in net 10 to 15 % shift from NPF to Congress. He was positive that if this happens, Congress will have absolute majority in the next election. He pointed out that in 2013 assembly election, 32 Congress candidates lost by small margins and in most places, were placed second. Even in the 2018 election, he said most of them want to contest from Congress party and so looked forward to the next poll battle. Taking

a dig at the current elected members, Therie described the members as “jackals”. He said if they were to be elected again they will remain jackals and no one can expect a clean government. Therie also slammed the present elected members for not being able to speak for their people. He said the legislators have become “dumb” but not deaf and so no reason why Nagas would want to have dumb legislators who can no longer represent people nor legislate laws. He said people of the state today want fresh blood because they do not have any expectation from the current members. He said when new faces come, people know they will not have money and so people won’t expect it form them. Therie said Congress will not buy votes in the forthcoming election but that the party organisation

and election machinery will work cohesively for candidates as a mobile campaign unit. When asked about the leadership of Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü, who completed three months on May 22, Therie said Dr. Shürhozelie was a senior legislator and would lose nothing if he stood by the people. He should be strong and stand for the people, Therie said. On the revocation of Rongmei tribe recognition, he said justice was delivered to the people. Therie exuded confidence of being able to bring changes in the state, but added that to achieve this, “we have to stand by the clean election and elect members who are not corrupted”. To queries, Therie said he heard from “third party” that Dr. Shürhozelie will face bye-election from Northern Angami-I before the six months that ends on August 22.

Mohammad Fazlurrahim Mohammad Fazlurrahim said. “At the time of performing ‘Nikah’, the person performing the ‘Nikah’ will advise both the bridegroom/man and the bride/ woman to incorporate a condition in the ‘Nikahnama’ to exclude resorting to pronouncement of three divorces by her husband in one sitting,” it said. The affidavit would be perused by a five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar, which, on

May 18, reserved its verdict on a bunch of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of triple talaq after hearing parties including the Union government, the AIMPLB and the All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board for six days in summer vacation. During the hearing, it asked Muslim bodies as to how can a practice like triple talaq be a matter of “faith” when they have been asserting that it is “patriarchal”, “bad in theology” and “sinful”.

New Delhi, May 22 (PTI): The Election Commission on Monday cancelled elections to 10 Rajya Sabha seats scheduled to be held on June 8, citing a clash with the Presidential poll due in July and the EVM challenge beginning on June 3. A brief statement from the EC said it has decided to “withdraw” the press note of May 16 announcing the elections to Rajya Sabha seats from Goa, Gujarat and West Bengal. It said it will announce fresh dates “in due course”. The terms of several prominent faces in the Rajya Sabha, including Union minister Smriti Irani, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien, are set to end in July and August. The notification for the now-postponed polls was to be issued today as per the May 16 press statement. Out of the 10 retiring members, four are from Trinamool Congress, three from Congress, two from BJP and one from the CPM. While the term of Shantaram Naik (Cong, Goa) is coming to an end on July 28, the retirement of Ahmed Patel (Cong), Dilipbhai Pandya (BJP)

and Irani (BJP) -- all from Gujarat -- is due on August 18. The tenure of members from West Bengal -- O’Brien (TMC), Debabrata Bandhopadhyay (TMC), Pradip Bhattacharya (Cong), Yechury (CPM), Sukhenduhakhar Roy (TMC) and Dola Sen (TMC) is also ending on August 18. A Commission spokesperson later clarified that the Presidential election may coincide with the schedule of RS polls in view of the fact that secretaries of legislative assemblies are notified as returning officers for RS elections and they are also to be appointed as assistant returning officers for the presidential election. The retiring members would have participated in the Presidential election as their terms would have ended after the election is held sometime around July 20, he said. “Besides the Commission has invited the recognised political parties to prove before the Commission the allegations made on tamperability of VVPAT and EVMs from June 3 and this will divert attention of some of the parties who may like to participate in the challenge,” he said.

Jaitley files fresh defamation suit against Arvind Kejriwal NEW DELHI, MAY 22 (AGENCIES): Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday filed another defamation case of Rs 10 crore against Arvind Kejriwal+ over use of an “objectionable” word by Delhi CM’s lawyer Ram Jethmalani+ in the Delhi High court. Jaitley, who holds the twin portfolios of finance and defence, filed the fresh suit after Kejriwal’s counsel Ram Jethmalani allegedly abused him in open court during the proceedings of another defamation suit he had filed against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and five other party leaders. The noted lawyer, during the cross-examination of the union minister on May 15 and May 17 in the Delhi high court, had used certain words which were objected to by Jaitley. Advocate Manik Dogra, who is representing Jaitley, said they had filed a fresh civil defamation suit against Kejriwal as he, through his counsel, had used abusive language in the open court, which was also recorded in the order sheet. This warrants filing of a separate defamation suit, he added.

Virbhadra Singh, wife appear in court over DA case NEW DELHI, MAY 22 (AGENCIES): Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh and his wife on Monday appeared in a special court here in connection with a nearly Rs 10 crore disproportionate as-

sets case and sought bail. However, the judge posted the matter for argument to May 29 after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought time to file a reply to the bail pleas by Singh, his wife

Pratibha and the others chargesheeted in the case. The CBI chargesheet, r unning into over 500 pages, has claimed that Singh had amassed assets worth around Rs 10 crore which were disproportion-

ate to his total income during his tenure as a Union minister. The final report, filed against Singh and eight others for the offences including forgery

and corruption, arrayed around 225 witnesses and 442 documents. The report also named as accused LIC agent Anand Chauhan, who is at present

in judicial custody. Chauhan was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on July 9 last year in a separate money laundering case related to the DA case.

Arun Jaitley and Arvind Kejriwal The court had termed as “scandalous” certain remarks made by Jethmalani against Jaitley during the latter’s cross-examination last week. Justice Manmohan said if such remarks were made on instructions of Kejriwal, then he should “first step into the box and make good his allegations” before continuing with Jaitley’s cross examination. “If such allegations have been made on instructions of Defendant 1 (Kejriwal), then no point in continuing with cross examination of plaintiff (Jaitley) any more. Let Defendant 1 make good his allegations. Let him step into the box,” the judge had said. Jaitley’s senior advo-

cates Rajiv Nayar and Sandeep Sethi had raised the issue before the court saying they want a clarification from Kejriwal whether the remarks were made on his instructions or by Jethmalani on his own. In December 2015, Jaitley had filed the defamation suit seeking Rs 10 crore damages from Kejriwal and AAP leaders Kumar Vishwas, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Deepak Bajpayee, claiming that they made “false and defamatory” statements in the case involving DDCA, thereby harming his reputation. It has also been reported that if found guilty, the Delhi CM could be sent behind the bars for at least a year along with fines.

New Delhi, MAY 22 (AGENCIES): The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Monday told the Supreme Court that it would issue an advisory to ‘qazis’ (judges, whose decisions are based on Islamic religious law) to tell bridegrooms that they should not resort to triple talaq to annul their marriage. In an affidavit, the AIMPLB said that it had decided to issue an advisory through its website, publications and social media platforms asking ‘’qazis’’ to tell a bridegroom at the time of the execution of ‘Nikahnama’ (marriage contract) that they would not resort to “three divorces in one sitting” in case of differences as it was an “undesirable practice in Shariat”. “At the time of performing ‘Nikah’ [marriage], the person performing it will advise the bridegroom/ man that in case of differences leading to talaq, the bridegroom/man shall not pronounce three divorces in one sitting since it is an undesirable practice in Shariat,” the affidavit filed by AIMPLB secretary

Litmus test on EVMs

n the end, it boils down to whether the election results can be accepted as genuine mandate because there are strong suspicions that the machines can be manipulated and so use of Electronic Voting Machines(EVMs) are untrustworthy. Various political parties have condemned the EVMs mostly after losing elections. It happened in 2009 when BJP issued a warning, that if it didn’t do well in the general elections then it would be due to tampering of EVMs. After the 2009 defeat, BJP’s then PM candidate L K Advani had raised questions about the credibility of the EVMs, and said that the country should go back to the older system of ballot papers. In response, the Election Commission Of India then published a full-fledged report maintaining that the machines are secure and tamper-proof. Not convinced, maverick politician Subramanian Swamy also moved the Supreme Court on the issue, and the apex court ordered the poll panel to introduce “paper trail” to EVMs through the country. The 2014 Lok Sabha Election saw several allegations of EVM-rigging. One of the prominent ones was when Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi alleged that an EVM had been tampered by the BJP and said the Congress would take it up with the Election Commission. During a mandatory mock poll in Jorhat on April 3, 2014, every time a button was pressed, the vote went in favour of BJP.After the UP and Punjab elections, several political parties have again raised the bogey of manipulation of EVMs. The Samajwadi Party(SP) raised the issue which was supported by political foe the Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP). Both said the results were suspect as the BJP win even in muslim dominated areas, was shocking. The AAP also alleged that it lost very badly in Punjab due to rigging of EVMs and by that it meant that the rigging was in favour of the Congress. The logic gets stranger when the Congress also backed the demand of all other opposition parties for conducting a test on EVMs and reintroduce ballot papers for elections. What lent credence to the serious allegation of tampering of EVMs was the ‘live demonstration’ on how EVM can be tampered at the special session of Delhi assembly on May 9. In the live mock test, carried out by AAP MLA and software engineer Saurabh Bhardwaj, he then demonstrated how a large number of votes polled for AAP actually went to the BJP on the EVM used by him. During the demonstration, Bharadwaj said the EVM can be tampered in such a way that it also shows the correct results for a few votes. He also reset the EVM to demonstrate how the same machines which pass the mock test on a polling day can be manipulated during the voting process. The Election Commission has agreed, much belatedly, to allow political parties an attempt at hacking electronic voting machines (EVMs). Beginning June 3, the programme was in response to doubts being expressed by certain parties regarding the inviolability of the machines at the heart of our democratic system. Any effort to reinforce trust in the crucial piece of equipment can only be welcomed. What is at stake here is the credibility of the country’s electoral system, and people’s faith in it. Only such a test will prove or disprove allegations.

DailyDevotion The Explanation For Our Difficulties

…that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us… —John 17:21 If you are going through a time of isolation, seemingly all alone, read John 17 . It will explain exactly why you are where you are— because Jesus has prayed that you “may be one” with the Father as He is. Are you helping God to answer that prayer, or do you have some other goal for your life? Since you became a disciple, you cannot be as independent as you used to be. God reveals in John 17 that His purpose is not just to answer our prayers, but that through prayer we might come to discern His mind. Yet there is one prayer which God must answer, and that is the prayer of Jesus— “… that they may be one just as We are one…” (John 17:22). Are we as close to Jesus Christ as that? God is not concerned about our plans; He doesn’t ask, “Do you want to go through this loss of a loved one, this difficulty, or this defeat?” No, He allows these things for His own purpose. The things we are going through are either making us sweeter, better, and nobler men and women, or they are making us more critical and faultfinding, and more insistent on our own way. The things that happen either make us evil, or they make us more saintly, depending entirely on our relationship with God and its level of intimacy. If we will pray, regarding our own lives, “Your will be done” (Matthew 26:42), then we will be encouraged and comforted by John 17, knowing that our Father is working according to His own wisdom, accomplishing what is best. When we understand God’s purpose, we will not become small-minded and cynical. Jesus prayed nothing less for us than absolute oneness with Himself, just as He was one with the Father. Some of us are far from this oneness; yet God will not leave us alone until we are one with Him— because Jesus prayed, “…that theyall may be one….”

n 1930, Dr. Pottenger conducted a study to find out more about the effects of raw versus cooked meat, as well as raw versus pasteurized milk on cats, and whether they had any impact on growth and development. Nine hundred cats were studied in ten years in order to not only see the short term effects of the food, but also the influence the cats’ diet would have on their kittens over three generations. The results of this study were stunning: a simple modification in diet – raw vs cooked meat and milk – impacted cats’ health over four generations! The conclusions of his study were: Physical degeneration caused by a poor diet in the mother is inherited in the offspring and passed on through the third generation. But when a mother’s diet is nutritious, not only does she benefit with good health, so do her offsprings. Pottenger went further to see whether poor health could be reversed. The third generation of cats, that developed health problems, was fed well. What emerged was that each kitten of their children, and the three successive generations of kittens they produced, was healthier than the prior one. What Pottenger discovered 85 years ago is that the food we eat each day influences illness or wellness, not only in ourselves, but in our children, grandchildren, even our great-grandchildren. The cell is the basic structure of the body, and the human body is built of trillions of cells. Each cell has a nucleus that houses DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid. Genes are small sections of DNA that contain the instructions for our individual characteristics – like eye and hair colour. The purpose of genes is to store information. The Human Genome Project has estimated that humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes. Every person has two

copies of each gene; one inherited from each parent. The total number is called the genome. The DNA code contains instructions needed to make the proteins and molecules essential for our growth, development and health. Examples of proteins include keratin, the protein in your hair, and haemoglobin, the oxygencarrying protein in your blood. Essentially, the deoxyribonucleic acid / DNA in our bodies contains the blueprints for who we are and instructions for who we will become. For example, it can tell our eyes to turn from blue at birth to brown later on, our length to grow from 20 inches to 70 etc. Do genes mutate according to how we live? E p i ge n e t i c s i s t h e science that studies what forces influence our genes to change. C a n t h e D NA b e changed with diet and exercise? This is what Dr. Claudia Aguirre, neuroscientist says: During the winter of 1944-1945, a terrible famine swept through the Netherlands. The Dutch population’s nutritional intake dropped to fewer than 1,000 calories per day. Women who conceived during this time gave birth to children who survived — but with higher rates of conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity compared to siblings born before. How could something that happened before birth have such a powerful effect on health some 50 years later? The answer is that the foetuses adapted their genes to their environment (a lack of food + high maternal stress), and these early changes set up these descendants for future health complications. Today, we understand a great deal more how the food we consume changes our bodies and brains right down to the genetic level. There are many studies correlating specific compounds in food to genetic changes in our bodies.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur Tuesday, May 23, 2017

Genetic impact Animal studies show that certain foods and exercise can stimulate a protein, called BDNF, in the genes which creates new neurons and improves the functions of the old ones, a necessary factor for learning and memory. So, smart diet choices can actually make you smarter! Poor diet affects us to our core. And this “core” gets passed down from generation to generation. So that old saying “you are what you eat” should be “You are what your mother ate.” A number of foods and environmental factors can damage the DNA. Here are some of DNA’s enemies: The radiation from mobile phones affects the human DNA. Several studies have recommended that we use hands-free technology. Pesticides and fertilizers which are consumed with all food. Food wrapped in plastic absorbs it, and studies show that an average person consumes about 210 micrograms of plastic per day. In a study, researchers at the University of Oxford’s Department of Plant Sciences, and the studies published in the journal Genome Biology, demonstrated that the diets of organisms can affect the DNA sequences of their genes. Researchers took two groups of parasites which had common ancestors but had evolved to eat very different kinds of food. The team detected differences in DNA sequences that could be attributed to the composition of their food, providing new insights into how DNA sequences can be influenced by adaptation to different diets. In a laboratory study pairing food chemistry and cancer biology, scientists at

the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, tested the effect of foods on the DNA of cells. They found that liquid smoke flavouring, black and green teas and coffee activated the highest levels of a well-known cancerlinked gene called p53. The p53 gene becomes activated when DNA is damaged. The higher the level of DNA damage, the more p53. Two chemicals in these foods were held responsible for the damage: Pyrogallol and gallic acid. Pyrogallol, commonly found in smoked foods, is also found in cigarette smoke, hair dye, tea, coffee, bread crust, roasted malt and cocoa powder. Gallic acid is found in teas and coffees. Liquid smoke is often used to add smoky flavour to sausages and other meats. Here are just a very few of the most dangerous processed “foods” and their impact on our DNA: Genetically Modified Foods (GMO): Every time a corporate scientist inserts a novel gene into a plant cell, the gene ends up in a random location in the plant’s genome. All that the scientists can do is to pray that the new gene will not destabilize a safe food and make it toxic. When researchers Pr yme and Rolf Lembcke conducted studies about the possible health consequences of genetically modified food, they concluded that genetic engineering creates widespread genetic mutations in thousands of locations throughout the genome! Food that’s made in the lab, and was not meant to be recognized by your cells, will eventually build up as toxic material in your body, causing digestive problems, lowered immunity, tumours and cancer.

Processed Omega 6 Fatty Acids and Trans Fatty Acids: With the processing of omega 6-rich vegetable oils - such as corn, soybean, canola and safflower oils that are so abundant in our diet today – the balanced ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids, on which our human genome thrived for thousands of years, changed drastically. We now eat onetenth of the amount of omega 3 fatty acids required for normal functioning. This is why a high percentage of our modern population is susceptible to food-related health conditions like heart disease, cancer, insulin resistance and diabetes, obesity, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. The elimination of toxic trans fatty acids alone could avert tens of thousands of heart attacks each year. A team of molecular biologists, at the National Institute of Nutrition in India, performed a study on rats to see how genes are affected by trans fatty acids. They discovered that rats fed higher levels of trans fatty acids modified their genes to become insulin resistant, increasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Sugar: Epidemiologist Lisa Giovanelli’s findings revealed that the more simple sugar (from soft drinks, desserts and other processed sweets) a person consumed, the more oxidative DNA damage occurred in blood cells. High Fructose Corn Syr up (HFCS): This is added to thousands of fast foods and soft drinks. It damages genes by producing the chemical hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) while heating. When the effects of HMF on individual human cells were studied, it was found that the more exposure to HMF, the more DNA damage. Meat: Research at the Medical Research Council’s Dunn human nutrition unit in Cambridge, published in the journal Cancer Research, has shown that eating red meat can increase your risk of bowel cancer

by producing substances in the gut that damage DNA. A comparison of cells from the lining of the colon shows that people who eat a diet high in red meat have a “consistent and significant” increase in levels of DNA damage compared with vegetarians. Substances called N-nitrosocompounds increase in the large bowel of red meat eaters, destabilizing the DNA, making it more likely to undergo harmful changes that increase the risk of cancer. But can these genetic changes be passed on to your children? Independent studies show that this happens: A group, led by Randy Jirtle of Duke University, demonstrated how mouse clones, implanted as embryos in separate mothers, will have radical differences in fur colour, weight, and risk for chronic diseases, depending on what that mother was fed during pregnancy. In 2010, Jiménez-Chillarón and his colleagues found that overfed male mouse pups developed insulin resistance, obesity and glucose intolerance, and passed these traits to their offspring, who developed these diseases without overeating. A study led by Ram B. Singh of the TsimTsoum Institute in Krakow, Poland, published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, examined nutrients that affect chromatin, the chemical soup in which DNA operates. “It is possible that eating more omega-3 fatty acids, choline, betaine, folic acid and vitamin B12, by mothers and fathers, possibly can alter chromatin states leading to the birth of a ‘super baby’ with long life and lower risk of diabetes and obesity.” More and more evidence suggests that what you eat may have a genetic impact on your children and grandchildren. Post-mortem

Persecutions of Christians

“A

nd from the days of John, the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matt 11:12 KJV). As Desan Tagore had written in his book “Israel in India” about three decades ago, we Nagas are enjoying “religious freedom” in our own land. We are practicing our religion, preaching and worshiping everywhere in our land without hindrances from any side, which means we Naga Christians are enjoying religious sovereignty. Religious sovereignty means, we can say, spiritual sovereignty. We are propagating Christianity, praying, singing and anointing in the name of Jesus everywhere in our land freely. According to world human population census of 2010, out of total world population, the Christians have the highest percentage of about 32% , Muslims are about 24% and Hindus about 15%. But the Christians in the other religious majority countries suffer serious prosecutions every now and then. Presently, the Christians especially in many countries in Asia and Africa suffer indescribable, I say, ’indescribable’ loses and hardships in the hands of the non-Christians or anti-Christians without rhyme or reason. And only because of being Christians. Christians men, women and children are killing without any compunction. They are tortured and preventing from attending schools, their villages and houses are burned down. Church buildings are destroyed and monuments are thrown down without any hesitations. Sophisticated weapons are fired indiscriminately inside the churches and assembly of people. The Christians cannot roam and work freely. Their food stores are burnt down and destroyed and most of the

Christians live in fear and on the verge of starvation. Many leave their houses and run away to any other safe places in order to escape dead. Mental torture, physical torture. How miserable are their lives? Pitiful. But the Christians in Nagaland are giving shelters and employments lavishly to those who persecute our Christian brothers around the world. Biblically it may be right, but socially, economically and from security point of view it is not advisable. We have to consider our conditions and also think seriously about our future generations. We Naga Christians are worshiping our God freely and peacefully. Now therefore, is there any responsibility of the Naga Christians for the persecuted churches and the Christians around the world?? If we cannot go physically to help out the persecuted Christians, or we cannot send to them help in cash or in kind, we conveniently send prayer missiles for the safety and comfort of the persecuted Christians and the churches around the world. “Call me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you know not” Jeremiah 33:3. “ Elias (Elijah) was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth the fruit.” (James 5:17, 18 KJV). Like that, the church leaders of Nagaland should put heads together and proclaim a fast or chain prayers for a week or more than that for the persecuted Christians and churches around the world. May God guide and encourage us. A.Z.Jami, Surviving Senior Naga National Worker

t is so interesting to hear and read about some fear psychosis among Nagas with regard to the entry of political agendas of BJP in Nagaland. Many Nagas who claimed to be so Christianized fear that BJP would certainly destroy the spirit of Christian in Nagaland if voted to power. Such fear began to grow bigger when our neighbouring States were taken over by BJP Government. Many Christians sympathize with each other as though they are more Christians than others. We are used to speaking about the third person except ourselves. I would opine differently because the reason people fear such agendas of BJP clearly shows some instabilityof one’s faith and its practice. Let us be politically ruled by BJP so as to test ourselves before God. Are we afraid to be Christians under BJP rule? Do we want to be Christians only in good times? As Christians, let us not always seek the path of happiness. Sometimes, we need to walk the journey of fire and thorns so that we could be purified from our artificial Christian life. I am sure there is no single Naga Christian who faced persecution or torture under the cruel hands of other religious groups in Nagaland. I have never faced such incidents in my life (I only come across such incidents from some denominations in Nagaland. It can be called Christian vrs Christian). Absence of such experience can make us lukewarm and indifferent to our profession of faith. Let us allow ourselves to be trimmed or else we may grow as wild Christians. Nagaland has sufficient wild Christians; therefore, do not multiply the number with our solemn entry. Recently, NBCC has rightly marked the need “to safeguard the Christian faith.” It further speaks about its displeasure with regard to the suppression of faith and practice. Comments of these types are easy because such incidents take place outside Nagaland. When

other religious group persecutes Christians, we say it is injustice, it is against the law of India, and it is against secularism. But what about one denomination fighting against the other in Nagaland. Are we blind inside our own State and try to see only the outside life? There are numerous incidents where one denomination pulled and burned down the other Church. Furthermore, there are many villages even to this day where the right to religious freedom is curtailed.Where are the Holy Church leaders during such ‘religious persecutions and misunderstandings’? Are they so ignorant about these facts because they think of God 24x7? We failed to be Christian inside Nagaland and blame those who are far away from us. (Many people wanted to be missionaries outside Nagaland whereas our land is soakedwith violence and blood.) Likewise, NBCC has closed its holy eyes to the many realities of religious suppression in Nagaland. We need to heal our wounds before treating the sickness of others. I believe that such dreadful diseases be done away first so that we can open the way to religious freedom and harmony as brothers and sisters. In other words, let us mean what we say and say what we mean. Keep aside the ‘trumpet culture’ and al-

low life to glow better. The ruling party of Nagaland is no less than BJP when it comes to corruption and numerous hidden agendas. And the Church also contributes its big share for the same cause using different routes under the guise of religion. Yet, we try to blame the external force without maintaining the life within. Our own political leaders together with many affiliated associations (religious and secular) eat up the life of Nagas and here we are talking enthusiastically about external threats and fears. This may not add any sugar to our cup of tea. Every political party has its own strength and weakness. No party is too good to receive the fullest appreciation or too bad to be despised eternally. All share equal responsibility of success and failure. It is high time for Nagas to judge and act wisely with true Christian spirit. In this regard, the Church has better role to play instead of playing a double game. By this we can call Nagaland as Christian State. To go on shouting “Nagaland for Christ” is too early because we have not gone through the furnace of purification. Christianly Yours, G. L. Right decision can end corruption

Sir,

Why do we complain against corruption? It is you and me who had chosen our leaders, corruption starts because we don’t choose our leader with quality or ability but we chase after money. This is how we elected our government even in the past. Again general election is nearby, so let us review our past, let us change our mindset for the betterment of tomorrow, let’s not elect who has only money power but who has good potential and commitment for the betterment of our state. Let’s make our state free from corruption . M. Bonglang. Phom, Chakesang Walford Colony Dimapur

under the GST framework will bring down the tax cost for businesses. Also, taxpayers or consumers currently have to pay both the Centre and state taxes on a single sale, which adds to increased costs for businesses and consumers. Such an increase in costs adds to the inflationary pressure. GST will be a single nation-wide sales tax replacing a string of central and state levies. “That is how we have managed to keep our inflation basket under control,” Adhia said, promising to fix any compliance issues that crop up during implementation. The revenue secretary said GST will create buoyancy in the economy through better compliance and ease of doing business. “I wouldn’t say anything is pending, but I would say the government has to reach out to the trade and industry and also the machinery of explaining the GST procedures in townhall meetings. We need to accelerate this,” he said on the task ahead.

GULMARG, MAY 22 (AGENCIES): Inflation will fall by 2 per cent on implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) and will create buoyancy in the economy, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has said. With the stage set for the biggest overhaul of India’s tax system since Independence, the government will launch a massive awareness campaign to educate consumers about GST so that they are not fleeced by traders in the name of new tax. In an interview to PTI, he said the all-powerful GST Council will meet next week to decide on tax rates of contentious items like gold, bidi and biscuits, just in time for its rollout from July 1. The Council over the two days last week assigned tax rates to more than 500 services and 1,200 goods by setting them in five broad rates of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. Adhia and his team visited this picturesque hill station near Srinagar for a short break before heading back to Delhi.

eaked Facebook Inc documents show how the social media company moderates issues such as hate speech, terrorism, pornography and self-harm on its platform, the Guardian reported, citing internal guidelines seen by the newspaper. New challenges such as “revenge porn” have overwhelmed Facebook’s moderators who often have just ten seconds to make a decision, the Guardian said. The social media company reviews more than 6.5 million reports of potentially fake accounts a week, the newspaper added. Many of the company’s content moderators have concerns about the inconsistency and peculiar nature of some of the policies. Those on sexual content, for example, are said to be the most complex and confusing, the Guardian said. Facebook had no specific comment on the report but said safety was its overriding concern. “Keeping people on Facebook safe is the most important thing we do. We work hard to make Facebook as safe as possible while enabling free speech. This requires a lot of thought into detailed and often difficult questions, and getting it right is something we take very seriously”, Facebook’s Head of Global Policy Management Monica Bickert said in a statement.

Bengaluru FC beat Mohun Bagan to lift Federation Cup

Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC players in action during the final match. ended the season without a trophy. Bengalur u thought they had their lead in the 19th minute when Udanta Singh volleyed home Eugueneson Lyngdoh’s take in stunning fashion only for the assistant referee to disallow the goal. There was a second big chance only two minutes later when Udanta tried to cheekily flick in Lenny’s low cross but Debjit Majumder got enough of a hand to push it out for a corner. Sandesh Jhingan made a goalline clearance from a Yusa Katsumi shot in the 31st minute in what would be Mohun Bagan’s only real chance in the first period. While Bengaluru had nothing to complain about Udanta’s disallowed goal in the first half, they were justified in feeling robbed when Juanan Gonzalez’s legitimate prod from close in the 49th minute was wrongly flagged off side.

John Johnson headed a free kick from Udanta across the face of the goal and the Blues’ Spanish defender was well on side as he put the ball at the back of the net only for Bengaluru celebrations to be cut short by a flag that should have stayed down. Things soon got frenetic at both ends. Bengaluru soon answered with a counter. Set up by Harmanjot Khabra, Udanta spotted Majumder charging off his line and lobbed to ‘keeper only to see the ball bounce wide. But the young winger, who was having a fantastic night, ended up pulling a muscle in the bargain, forcing Roca to bring on Vineeth. Bagan then had a flurry of corners in added time of the second half but the Bengaluru defence did enough to see the danger away and take the game to extra time.

Sports lottery to boost Australia’s Olympic funding

4TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY of

Indonesia offers ACKNOWLEDGEMENT In loving memory of Shanchothung Ezung $1mn in badminton 05.08.1942 – 01.11.2016 Superseries

JAKARTA, MAY 22 (IANS): Indonesia has put on $1 million prize money for the upcoming Badminton World Fe d e r a t i o n ( B W F ) sanctioned Superseries Premier championships slated here from June 12 to 18 here. Over 300 players, including top seeded players, from 21 countries and regions have been confirmed to take part in the event, it was announced on Monday. The tournament organiser claimed that the amount of prize is the largest in Badminton World Federation’s premier badminton tournaments held this year so far, reports Xinhua news agency. Unlike in the previous years, when it was held in landmark badminton arena of Istora Senayan, the upcoming Indonesia Open will be held in the capital city’s convention center of JCC, which is not far from the Istora Senayan. The host country has only set target to secure one title in the tournament -- by its men’s doubles rising stars Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, have won All England, India Open and Malaysia Open. “The last champion title that we obtained here was in 2013 with Mohamad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. After that we have never won. Let’s hope we can win again this year,” Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) media officer Ricky Subagja told a press conference. Ricky added that the top-ranked pair of Marcus and Kevin has demonstrated excellent performances in the last few months in premier championships. K Y M C

-- something the government has attempted to crack down on in recent times, but Hunt said the lottery was “very different.” “If it is legislated and highly regulated, and it’s a public good lottery then that’s sensible,” Hunt said. “It is a sensible way to provide additional permanent sports funding which I think is fair, reasonable and appropriate. In 30, 50 and 100 years it will still be here and providing a way to support participation and support performance for elite Australian sport,” he continued. The British system was implemented since 1994, with 28 per cent of the revenue raised going to good causes within sport. Half of all returns go back into the prize pool, with the government receiving the remaining 12 per cent cut. A similar allocation in Australia could raise up to 50 million AU dollars ($37.2 million) per year, meaning Australia’s Tokyo 2020 campaign could benefit by as much as 100 million AU dollars ($74.4 million) -- with the money to be distributed among high-performance Olympic sports programs in the lead up to the Games. The lottery measure was touted last year as one option to boost performance after Australia’s poor showing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, at which Australia finished 10th on the medal tally -- well below its record fourth-place showings at both Sydney and Athens in 2000 and 2004.

CANBERRA, MAY 22 (IANS): The Australian government is a step closer to introducing a British-style Olympic lottery which could raise 50 million AU dollars ($37.2 million) annually for the development of elite sports, according to a plan outlined by Sports Minister Greg Hunt on Monday. In a statement, the government said a national sports lottery was among the options “being considered” to boost Australia’s prospects for future Olympic meets, and according to Hunt, it could be up and running by as early as July 1, 2018, reports Xinhua news agency. Speaking to the press, Hunt confirmed he had held talks with representatives from the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), who agreed that public funding through a lottery was one of the better options to raise revenue for Australia’ s Olympic sporting bodies. “It’s something that in my time and on my watch I would like to see us achieve,” Hunt said. “It’s something which I strongly support, I know in my discussions with (AOC President) John Coates and (ASC Chairman) John Wylie they’ve long been advocates of this, and this is a way of finding funds, working with the states,” he added. The plan for a national lottery has been around since the late 1970s, with one major criticism being that it could encourage gambling

Conor McGregor begins training for Mayweather mega-fight

Floyd Mayweather could yet enter the ring and face Conor McGregor in a money-spinning bout. (Agencies) Las Vegas, May 22 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : C o n o r McGregor has made it clear that the ball is firmly in Floyd Mayweather's court when it comes to the pair's proposed mega-fight. The UFC star took to Twitter to share a photo of himself following boxing training at Straight Blast Gym on Sunday, the clearest indication yet that his camp is well and truly under way. 'Solid work today,' he wrote alongside the image. 'Sign your end Floyd or you are just a mouth.' UFC president Dana White revealed earlier this week that the promotion and McGregor had come to a deal on their end, meaning

an agreement must now be found with Mayweather for the fight to go ahead. According to ESPN's Brett Okamoto, the next step in finalising a deal shall see UFC president White bringing a close to talks with Mayweather's advisor Al Haymon. McGregor applied for his boxing licence from Nevada State Athletic Commission earlier this week, with the 28-year-old taking further steps towards being sanctioned as a boxer. The UFC lightweight champion would be able to fight Mayweather in Las Vegas if the request is granted but he is no mood to wait for the outcome of that application as he has begun training

for the showdown. Mayweather announced on Saturday that the fight is '90 per cent' likely to happen, saying it's 'the only fight that makes sense (for me). 'There's no rush,' added the boxer. I guess I have one more obstacle that I have to get over. When we make a move it's going to be huge. When Floyd Mayweather fights, it's history.' 'If I do fight, there's a 90 per cent chance it's against Conor McGregor. When I get back to the US I'll call Al Haymon and see our next move. There's no rush. The only thing I am chasing is my own records. And I mean pay-per-view records.'

Ban on Sreesanth: HC issues Liverpool book ticket to CL play-off stage notice to Vinod Rai panel K ERA L A , M AY 2 2 (AGENCIES): The Kerala High Court, on Monday sought the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s stand on a plea by cricketer Shanthakumaran Sreesanth challenging the life ban imposed upon him by the game’s governing body after detection of the 2013 Indian Premier League-6 spot-fixing scandal. A bench of Justice P B Suresh Kumar sought the BCCI’s stand, issuing notice to its panel of administrators headed by Vinod Rai, former CAG, and slated the matter for next hearing on June 19. The BCCI had earlier filed a counteraffidavit on the issue before the court in response to the plea by Sreesanth, who had challenged the continued life ban on him from the games despite his acquittal of the match-fixing charges. In its affidavit, the BCCI had said “the decision of the sessions court to acquit the petitioner from the criminal charges has no

impact whatsoever on the decision of the internal disciplinary committee of the BCCI to ban the petitioner from playing cricket tournaments organised by the BCCI and/or its affiliates.” The Board had said the question before the sessions court was whether the petitioner (and other accused) was liable to incur penal consequences under relevant criminal statutes. On the other hand, the question before the BCCI Disciplinary Committee was whether the petitioner was guilty of match fixing, corruption and gambling and violation of the internal disciplinary rules of the BCCI, the Board had said. The standard of proof required under a penal statute is much higher than the proof required for a disciplinary inquiry, it had said. All the 36 accused, including Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were discharged in the spotfixing case by Patiala House Court in July 2015.

Liverpool players celebrate after Coutinho scored the second goal. LONDON, MAY 22 (IANS): Liverpool managed to qualify for the 2017-2018 Champions League play-off by defeating Middlesbrough 3-0 Sunday and grabbing fourth place in the English Premier League (EPL) football championship. Chelsea claimed the EPL title this season and is looking forward to winning the double, facing Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 27.

Tottenham Hotspurs finished second, followed by Manchester City and Liverpool. Liverpool ended the season one point ahead of fifth-place Arsenal, thanks to the home victory over relegated Middlesbrough. Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho scored the second goal just six minutes into the second half, while Adam Lallana sealed the victory five minutes later.

Pakistan players not welcome for PKL

NEWDELHI, MAY 22 (AGENCIES): The government made it clear that it will not allow Pakistani players to compete in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), slated for next month, unless the neighbouring country stops ‘sponsoring terrorism’. The fifth season of the league will begin on June 25 with a clash between Puneri Paltans and Telugu Titans in Pune. Reports have suggested that Pakistani

players could be included in the players’ auction of the league. “They (organisers) can call them but they can’t make them play. Even if they are selected, it is government of India which will decide whether they are allowed or not. Unless Pakistan gets rid of terrorism, it is impossible to play with Pakistan,” Sports Minister Vijay Goel said. Pakistan’s hockey players and cricketers have also not been allowed to compete

on the Indian soil for some time now. The diplomatic tension between the two countries increased after a Pakistan military court awarded the death sentence to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav last month for espionage and subversive activities. Jadhav had been arrested on March 3 last year. India challenged the judgement in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ordered a stay on the execution.
