Maintain standard of work: CM to policemen Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu (NP) Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 9 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Friday called upon the Nagaland Police Service officers to maintain standard of work and physical fitness, saying being overweight was unbecoming of a uniformed service. He was speaking as chief guest at the 46th General Conference of Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) held here at Police Complex, Chumukedima. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu reminded the officers of their “indispensible role in maintaining law and order in the state”, urging them to be impartial, more dedicated

BJP unit slams AICC secretary’s remark D I M A P U R , M AY 1 9 (NPN): Hitting out at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Nagaland, Dr. Jayakumar for his recent statements, the State BJP unit reminded the Congress that the BJP was a secular political party with its focus on development under the theme “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas.” In a press note, BJP media cell said the allegation by Congress was “to fool and mislead the common people in the state.” BJP said when Dr. Jayakumar had openly confessed about the misrule of Congress party in Nagaland as well as the Nation, “how can he claim that other political parties including BJP ruling Nagaland will be “Land of Satan”? It said Congress party’s policy was family politics and divide and rule. Accusing Congress party as the mother of all corruptions, BJP alleged that the Congress which had ruled the nation for over five decades, lured electoral politics with corrupt money and cheap propagandas, leading the nation into scams and scandals. It said BJP was firm against corruption and was working hard to make India corruption free.

and more disciplined than other categories of government employees. Transfer or posting, he said, was “putting the right person at the right place” and therefore shouldn’t be considered a punishment. “Few transfers will be affected soon,” he hinted. The chief minister further maintained that the image of the police needs to be improved in order to ensure effective policing in a modern society. “This has to be earned by the police themselves by becoming more efficient, friendly and helpful, while also becoming less corrupt in public perception,” the chief guest added. Dr. Shürhozelie also lauded the police force, saying Nagaland police has been doing quite well in maintaining law and order and had brought laurels to the state. “You cannot afford to remain contend with what you already know,” the CM said, accentuating on the need to keep updated with various technologies, keeping in mind the changing

dynamics of crime in a sophisticated world. Citing the recent ransomware attacks that affected computers across the world, Dr. Liezietsu said: “Ultimately, Nagaland Police also will have to brace up for investigating such types of cyber crimes.” He also suggested developing a software and to put in experts to man the systems for effective management. On the need for reforms in the state police, the chief minister pointed out, among other things, the “faulty system of police recruitment” that had attracted much criticism in the media. He was hopeful that such issues would be deliberated during the conference and come up with suggestions and solutions for consideration of the government. ADGP (Adm), L. Singsit also spoke on the occasion as special guest. On the occasion, NPSA president, Vekhosa Chakesang, submitted a representation to the chief minister. The chief minister was accompanied by Home minister Y. Patton.

UNC, GoI & GoM hold Services to have 4-slab GST rates second tripartite talks Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAY 19: The second round of tripartite talks between Government of India, Manipur government and United Naga Council (UNC) was held at Senapati on Friday. Besides deliberating on several issues, Friday’s tripartite meeting also came out with a four-point agreement primarily focussed on UNC’s core demand-- to roll back the decision of creation of seven new districts According to the first point, it stated that “the grievances of the UNC which led to the imposition of economic blockade were recognized, as there was non-adherence to the four memoranda of understanding and government of India’s assurance on the matter and Government of Manipur agree to start consultation with all stakeholders to redress the same.” “The focal point no.1 of agreement arrived at in the tripartite talks on March 19, 2017 is reaffirmed by both the parties,” it stated. The second point also stated that Manipur government would be represented

NBCC alarmed by rise in communalism in India Dimapur, May 19 (NPN): Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) reiterated that India is home to diverse religious and ethnic groups where diversities as enshrined in its constitution guarantees the privilege to enjoy basic civil and political rights and freedom to pursue one’s beliefs. However, NBCC said it was deeply alarmed at the resurgence of attacks on Christian minorities in India which have increased since 2011. It pointed out that Christians in India formed less than 3% of the country’s population though in majority in Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya. NBCC said beyond the north east, Christians constitute a significant segment in Kerala and Goa. Since Christians in other parts of India like- Gujarat, Rajasthan,Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh- are insignificant in number, rules on conversion and baptism are made complicated. NBCC said Christians in these states face official intimidation when they attempt to formalise their identity as Christians and those converting are made to seek permission from the government agencies. NBCC said these rules were clearly against the right to

freedom of religion. NBCC termed the recent resolution by state BJP made at its 5th executive meeting in Kohima, to “safeguard the Christian faith”, as the first of its kind for a political party to courageously come out in defence of Christian minorities in India. However, NBCC pointed out that the state unit’s expressed disappointment on the church in defending its own faith stood contrary. Of late, NBCC said rise in suppression of faith and practice not in line with mainline practices in India were on the rise and there was no doubt that the centre was “politically motivated to suppress the minorities. It cited incidents such as making Good Governance Day on Christmas, Digital India on Easter Sunday besides the attempt to have a ‘Uniform Civil Code’ and unleashing of ‘Cow Vigilante’ that has led the religious minorities feel insecure in a democratic and secular country. NBCC said the church has a responsibility towards the well being of its members and therefore obligated to examine and educate members of the plans and policies of any political party which made Christians in particular, feel these policies were

Landslide affects fuel supply to Kohima

KOHIMA, MAY 19 (NPN): Due to massive landslide near Peducha area, supply of fuel has been adversely affected in Kohima though no prior warning was issued to public about fuel pumps going dry. It was a surprise to many motorists in Kohima Friday when most of the fuel pump outlets had shut down since there was no fuel. Police on duty at the landslide area informed Nagaland Post that the situation did not appear to be too bright for restoration of the road due to rainfall. Police said over 200 trucks, mostly Manipur bound trucks were stranded along the highway. “No driver wants to cross the area as the landslide is very bad,” police informed. Excavators have been put in place to clear the road at the earliest. However, if it continues to rain, it would take more time to clear the debris, police sources said. Besides Peducha area, there were reports of landslides in other pockets along the (Cont’d on p-9) highway between Dimapur and Kohima.

GST rates for bio-diesel, beedi, footwear, textiles, agricultural implements and gold,” said Rajeev Dimri, Leader Indirect Tax, BMR & Associates in a statement here. Given that consensus is still elusive on the fitment of some items, Taxmann.com Senior Consultant V.S Datey said: “Thus the chances of introducing GST by July 1 appears doubtful.” Rating agency ICRA’s Senior Group Vice President Subrata Ray said the prices of relatively price sensitive small cars may increase marginally post GST, while original equipment manufacturers would pass on the benefit of lower taxes to customers on bigger vehicles and SUVs. “GST rates are likely to be almost neutral for the commercial vehicles and two-wheelers, and would marginally increase for three-wheelers. The automobile sector will also see some benefits by virtue of input tax credit norms,” Ray said. Sachin Menon of international accounting firm KPMG in India said the increase in the GST rate for telecom and financial services will be negative for the sector. “Multiplicity of tax rates for services will add complexity to the compliance in GST regime,” he said. “Levying GST at the demerit rate of 28 per cent for 5 star hotels could be a dampener for the tourism sector especially in cases of business travel,” he added. CRISIL Research felt the benefits of GST on business practices and company strategies will only be seen in the medium term.

IT, telecom and financial services will be taxed at the rate of 18 per cent. While five-star hotel services will be taxed at the highest 28 per cent, restaurants with a turnover of Rs 50 lakh and less would be levied at 5 per cent. “Non-air conditioned restaurants will have 12 per cent, while air-conditioned restaurants will have a service tax of 18 per cent,” Jaitley said. “Those restaurants located inside 5-star hotels will have same service tax as applicable to the 5-star hotels,” he added. He also said that entertainment tax will be merged with the service tax at 28 per cent. Hotels, gambling, race club betting and cinema will all be levied GST at 28 per cent. Jaitley said most of the work for rollout of GST from July 1 have been completed. “Six items still have to be decided and we need more time for discussions,” he added referring to the 6 categories of goods. Reacting to the announcements, industr y said it may increase taxes for some stakeholders, but hoped to get benefits through the input credit system. “Some of the key areas which would be discussed on June 3 would include

at the political level in the next round of talks. In the third point, it agreed to respect the points agreed upon during tripartite talks held on March 19, 2017 by both Manipur government and UNC mutually at the time of arriving at an amicable settlement to the issue of creation of new districts. As agreed in the fourth point, it was decided to hold the next round of talks at Senapati within one month time. Friday’s meeting was chaired by Government of India’s representative, MHA joint secretary (NE) Satyentra Garg and attended by an 11-member delegation of the UNC led by its president Gaidon Kamei, while chief secretary O Nabakishore represented the Manipur government. After the talks, Gaidon Kamei told reporters that the talks was mostly concentrated on the Naga bodies objection to the creation of new seven districts. “We stick to our demand to roll back the decision of creation of seven new districts. So, we are trying to bring a logical conclusion,” Kamei said.

SRINAGAR, MAY 19 (IANS): In a move expected to bring prices down from the current levels, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council on Friday decided on a four-slab tax rate for services along with the novel concept of input credit for goods used. The Council concluded its two-day meeting here with the decision to apply the same four tax rate slabs for services as for goods, but exempted healthcare and educational services from the purview of the GST. However, no consensus could be reached on the rate to apply on gold as well as beedi. The Council will meet again on June 3 in New Delhi for a decision in this regard. Briefing reporters here following the meeting, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that under GST, services will get the benefit of input tax credit for the goods used, effectively making the real incidence of taxation lower than the headline taxation rate. He said that while “luxury services” would attract the highest rate of 28 per cent, health and education services would be exempt categories. Jaitley said there would be a 5 per cent tax on carriage of goods by rail, road and air transport services because their main input is petroleum. Work contracts currently attract central tax at 6 per cent, while state taxes vary between 1-5 per cent, but no input credit is available for these services, the Minister noted. “Most of the inputs for work contracts... cement, steel are taxed at 28 per

BJP Phek conducts 5th executive meeting

DIMAPUR: The Phek District BJP conducted its 5th Executive Meeting on May 18 at Chizami Town Hall where all the five Mandals from the district— Pfutsero, Chizami, Chozuba, Phek and Meluri— attended the meeting. Several state BJP leaders, including State BJP president, Visasolie Lhoungu; advisor, Labour and Employment, Skills Development, Treasuries and Accounts, Dr. T.M Lotha and BJP state executive member Kevechutso Doulo, addressed party workers. Kevechutso Doulo, intending candidate from the 17th Chizami Assembly Constituency, said Chizami A/C was the most vibrant and mature constituency. “ God’s given time has come to change and developed the Phek District and particularly the 17th Chizami A/C,” he observed, adding that people should be determined for a change. He maintained that one cannot afford to continue to be stagnant in a vibrant society and, therefore, should create opportunities to happen. Doulo called upon the party men to work hard and be steadfast for all round development and be an agent of a change.

“BJP party is the only party that can deliver good governance for the welfare of the people,” he maintained, and appealed the party workers not to be carred away by false rumours. Visasolie Lhoungu in his address said BJP was different from the other political party because it provides equal opportunity to every citizen of India. He stated that BJP was growing and blooming in every state and in Nagaland too. “People are fed up of corruption and want the BJP government to meet the people expectation,” he claimed. Accusing the opposition party for polarising the political issue with religion, Visasolie asserted that BJP was a secular political party where every party man was free to practise his/her own choice of faith. “A very good Christian can be a very good politician. Congress party have ever to worry because the BJP party is working hard to evaluate its performance to make India free from congress,” he said in his tirade against the opposition parties. Dr. T.M Lotha called upon party workers to be prepared with as time was running short for the next

The advisor assured that BJP party will form the next government and asked the people of Phek district, especially the 17th Chizami A/C, to come out with its leader for the next government formation. He said that the whole state was changing and Chizami should be a part of the change. BJP is for development and unlike the Look East Policy of the previous government, BJP focuses on Act East Policy, he said.

According to him, the Congress party had completely failed in all fronts, adding Congress party agenda was only to criticise the other political party. “There is no prescription for anybody to follow any religion. There is no restriction because India is a secular state. Christian faith cannot be questioned and compromised. As a BJP Christian, we should be a committed Christian and pray regularly for those who are misleading the people,” the advisor stated in an

attempt to assuage public concern over BJP’s secular credentials. In the second session, Kulo Tsuzuh, vice president BJYM Nagaland presided over the business hour while Ananta Narayanan Mishra, organising secy. Nagaland, briefed the office bearers with 12 points to execute for party functioning. 183 candidates file nomination for KAAC polls

NEIGRIHMS making efforts to correct deficiencies Shillong, May 19 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : N o r t h Eastern Indira Gandhi Reg iona l I nstitute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is taking every effort to correct the deficiencies for the recognition of the postgraduate courses which have been derecognised by the Medical Council of India, this was informed by NEIGRIMS authority. In response to a news re por t in this regard, NEIGRIHMS in a statement said, “Two seats each of the post-graduate courses in the departments of Radio Diagnosis and General Surgery and two increased seats in the department of Anaesthesia are permitted seats granted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.” The statement further asserted that the institute is making every effort to address the deficiencies following which the matter will be taken up for recognition with MCI as per procedures.

B o k a j a n, M ay 1 9 (NPN): Candidates of all contesting political parties including independents Friday submitted their nominations for the much hyped and awaited 12th Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) polls. A total of 183 candidates filed their nominations for the June 12 mandate in as many as 26 constituencies with a potential strength of 5,98,177 voters across 561 polling stations. Out of this 26 constituencies, 9 constituency of Hamren sub-division will be under the control of Deputy Commissioner, Hamren, West Karbi Anglong; 10 constituency under Diphu sub-division will be under the control of Deputy Commissioner, Diphu, Karbi Anglong and rest 7 constituency under Bokajan sub-division will be under the control of SDO(C), Bokajan. The KAAC election, 2017 is crucial for BJP as it will be the first election the party would contest to sixth

scheduled administered areas after it came to power at Dispur. KAAC is currently ruled by the saffron party. However, this development came after majority of the INC Executive Members including the Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang, shifted allegiance to the saffron party after its glorious victory in the lately concluded State Assembly Polls, 2016. Resentment is brewing ever since the state BJP leadership announced the party ticket gainers to 25(+1 BPF) constituency in the hills district. Moreover, with the party’s decision to field new faces in the ensuing KAAC polls, the future of many political veterens who had been elected for more than two consecutive terms, now hangs in the balance. Upping the ante against the party’s decision, many BJP party workers reportedly vandalized their party office in Diphu and Phuloni displaying a sign of renewed turf in the ruling saffron brigade in the hill district.

ULFA (I) militant killed in Assam

Chakma, Hajong set to get citizenship

Guwahati, May 19 (PTI): A wanted ULFA(I) militant has been killed in an encounter with security forces in Udalguri district, officials said today. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint operation was launched by the Army and the police in the district yesterday where the militant was gunned down in an exchange of fire with the security forces, a defence spokesperson said. Arms and ammunitions were seized from the encounter site, the spokesperson said. The militant, Ramesh Bora, was the deputy of another hardcore ULFA(I) militant Rajan Deka and the self-styled ‘area commander’ of the outfit’s Udalgudi and Darrang districts, he said.

New Delhi, May 19 (Agencies): The Centre is all set to grant citizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees, who have been based in Arunachal Pradesh for over 50 years, official sources told The Indian Express. Home Ministry officials said that while consultations are on with the state government, the citizenship will not entitle the refugees to rights enjoyed by Scheduled Tribes in the state, including land ownership. Chakmas and Hajongs were originally residents of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of erstwhile East Pakistan, who had to flee when their land was submerged by the Kaptai dam project in the 1960s. The Chakmas, who are Buddhist, and Hajongs,

Meanwhile, the disgruntled executive members including Jiban Chandra Pathak, Surjya Rongphar, Semson Tisso and some other leaders have expressed their displeasure over the allotment of party tickets and announced to have formed a new regional political party under the banner of Karbi Anglong Democratic Alliance. KADC have filed nomination in 11 constituencies and is sure of winning 6 seats in the ensuing June 12 mandate. It needs to be mentioned that the Bokajan, Deopani and Nilip constituency has become a battle of prestige for EM Jiban Chandra Pathak, Surjya Rongpher and Semson Tisso as the party has considered the candidature of Madhujya Dhekial Phukan, Mukut Mahanta and Pabitra Rongpi respectively sidelining them. While Madhujya Dhekial Phukan is a former student leader, Mukut Mahanta and Pabitra Rongpi are said to be amongst the close aid of MLA Dr Numal Momin.

who are Hindus, also faced religious persecution in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). “The grant of citizenship is on the Union list of the Constitution and can be issued by the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) despite objections from the state government. But as normal practice, we try to take the states on board,” said a senior government official. He said that in this case, discussions were initiated following a protest by the Arunachal government. The state government has argued that if citizenship is granted to the refugees, it would reduce the indigenous tribal communities to a minority and deprive them of opportunities. Since 1990,

the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has been demanding their ouster from the state. Officials said the Centre may propose that Chakmas and Hajongs be issued Inner Line Permits, allowing them to travel and work but not possess land rights. Chakmas and Hajongs entered India through the then Lushai Hills district of Assam (now Mizoram). While some stayed back with the Chakmas already in the district, the Indian government moved a majority of them to the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), which is now Arunachal Pradesh. According to officials, the number of these refugees has increased from about 5,000 in 1964-69 to 1,00,000.

Mukul Sangma, not sole proprietor of M’laya: HNLC Shillong, May 19 (Agencies): The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Thursday claimed that Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma sent feelers to the group for supporting Congress candidates in Khasi and Jaintia Hills during 2018 assembly elections.

“Sangma is left with no option but to approach us,” said HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw, adding, “Chief Minister wanted to bargain with the group over peace talks.” “We were told that if we want the peace process to start, we should support the Congress in the coming assembly elections, which

will make way for him to become CM for another term and once he comes to power, he will definitely take things seriously and start the peace process,” HNLC claimed, adding, “We have already asked government several times in the past to appoint an interlocutor to initiate peace talks but in vain.”

HNLC further cleared that they would rather intensify our struggle than bargain with Mukul Sangma. “In future any feelers sent by the Meghalaya government should be free of any political manipulations. Sangma is not the sole proprietor of Meghalaya. He is only the CM for a specified time frame”.

GST changeover

lmost every state, including Nagaland have welcomed the changeover to Goods and Services Tax(GST) as the rosier parts of it has dominated the less rosier parts. Due to GST Special category states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are going to lose more income because they are mainly agricultural states compared to other states. Prior to GST, these states have control on all incomes due to being under special category but now those earning Rs.10 lakh and above will be brought under GST scale with the exception of J&K. In other states, the figure is up to Rs.25 lakhs. In order to avoid conflict with these states, the centre has avoided using the term special category and instead, described the states as north eastern states. These above mentioned states depends upon road tax for mainly exporting their products. The need for GST has been felt because under the current indirect tax structure 1) tax barriers have fragmented the Indian market, 2) cascading effects of taxes on cost have made indigenous manufacture less attractive, 3) complex multiple taxes have raised cost of compliance. There would be four tax slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent, plus a levy on taxes on luxury items like cars, aerated drinks and tobacco products to compensate states for any revenue losses in the first five years. The GST council is yet to decide which goods fall in which slab. The GST rates will remain broadly in line with the existing rates. To keep inflation under check, essential items including food, which presently constitute roughly half of the consumer inflation basket, will be taxed at zero rate. With the implementation of GST, consumers will not be subjected to double taxation. All taxes that are levied while purchasing good will include both the central government’s taxes as well as the state government’s taxes. The move would deter state governments from indiscriminately increasing taxes fearing public backlash. The GST Council has finalised a four-tier GST tax structure of 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent, with lower rates for essential items and the highest for luxury and de-merits goods, including luxury cars, SUVs and tobacco products, that would also attract an additional cess. Moreover, with a view to keeping inflation under check, essential items including food, which presently constitute roughly half of the consumer inflation basket, will be taxed at zero rate. The cess is expected to provide additional resources to the central government to compensate states for losses incurred. This will be based on the compensation formula. The cess is expected to provide additional resources to the central government to compensate states for losses incurred. This will be based on the compensation formula. There is need among special category states to note that they are essentially consuming(importing)states and so, would need to be compensated for the outgo of tax. The recommendations of the FFC has not exactly fitted the bill for big funding for big projects which most of these states are in need of.

DailyDevotion Out of the Wreck I Rise Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? —Romans 8:35

God does not keep His child immune from trouble; He promises, “I will be with him in trouble…” (Psalm 91:15). It doesn’t matter how real or intense the adversities may be; nothing can ever separate him from his relationship to God. “Inall these things we are more than conquerors…” (Romans 8:37). Paul was not referring here to imaginary things, but to things that are dangerously real. And he said we are “super-victors” in the midst of them, not because of our own ingenuity, nor because of our courage, but because none of them affects our essential relationship with God in Jesus Christ. I feel sorry for the Christian who doesn’t have something in the circumstances of his life that he wishes were not there. “Shall tribulation…?” Tribulation is never a grand, highly welcomed event; but whatever it may be— whether exhausting, irritating, or simply causing some weakness— it is not able to “separate us from the love of Christ.” Never allow tribulations or the “cares of this world” to separate you from remembering that God loves you (Matthew 13:22). “Shall…distress…?” Can God’s love continue to hold fast, even when everyone and everything around us seems to be saying that His love is a lie, and that there is no such thing as justice? “Shall…famine…?” Can we not only believe in the love of God but also be “more than conquerors,” even while we are being starved? Either Jesus Christ is a deceiver, having deceived even Paul, or else some extraordinary thing happens to someone who holds on to the love of God when the odds are totally against him. Logic is silenced in the face of each of these things which come against him. Only one thing can account for it— the love of God in Christ Jesus. “Out of the wreck I rise” every time.

Post-mortem

Look within for employability education

O

bserving the stagnancy scenario of educated unemployed in our state everybody has the penchant to advice for “Quality education” but so far none ever came up with the type of education we need at this juncture where umpteen time most indicated for employment oriented education but here too what type of employment and where, when there’s no avenue for gainful employment. That’s where the point got lost for wants of objective. Of course, good educational infrastructure comes at a cost where professional education is more expensive than the general academic education but remember also that both are complementary to each other for one cannot go for technical education without the basic academic educational qualification. However sadly we’ve miserably failed to balance tech education with the academic in the first place thus the consequent just to wake up blaming the tyre for malfunctioning engine. Looking through the prism of universal system of education and comparing, ours is vibrant enough with inclusive of essential subjects in term of academicals education where the question of overhauling the system may not be really necessary as I observed. No wonder, finding that we are lacking in professional sphere just to blame the system may not be appropriate here. This is because tech education and academic education are two entities of different subject where general education engrossed with multiple and dimensional subjects whereas tech education focuses on a particular subject, for instance Mr.X with tech educational qualification equipped with a diploma (Say welder) can be employed in a company and Mr.Y with academic graduate too can be employed in the same company as a clerical staff but here the ratio of supply against demand makes the different because for every 50-80 workers a clerical staff may be added or even less. Thus the demand for productive technical staff is always higher in every industry but that doesn’t meant our education system is incompetent. Just imagine presently we have thousands of technical graduates in various disciplines running from pillars to post in this virtually nil industrial state of Nagaland as those of academic graduates where their future look more bleak than ever before, then just blaming our schooling system can be simply barking down the wrong tree. More so, another wrong notion is that most of the academic graduates are shying away from enrolling themselves to the like of ITI’s trade course thinking it to be too lowly for them which in other word would be a great asset for them otherwise most may become overages in the course of their hunting for clerical jobs which is hard to come by and thus the end result will be frustration leading to social unrest. In other word we have already achieved literacy drive with a very high percentage of literate output and this should be considered as an achievement rather than criticizing which would be only counterproductive. Our next goal should be a determination towards industrial activities with inclusive growth through holistic

G

tech education along with the present academicals system of education. No wonder, industry is the growth engine of national economy that generate thousands and lakhs of employment avenue providing employment to all categories of skilled and unskilled alike, thus thereby elevating poverty that ultimately triggered high fiscal revenue leading to high per-capita of the populace. Invariably, it was also a long journey for India too from the nascent independent to till date with continuous investment for inclusive growth and to revamp industrial asset in the country, the president of India by notification on 9th May 2007 in concord with the 1961 business allocation rules under the ministry of agro and rural industries, promulgated MSME (Micro industry, small scale industries, medium industries for entrepreneurs) for both manufacturing and servicing sectors, with specific funding patterns for this MSME as indicated hereon; For Micro sector; An investment up to 25 lakhs for manufacturing unit and up to 10 lakh rupees for servicing sector. For small scale industry an investment not less than 25 lakhs but not exceeding 5 crores rupees for manufacturing sector and not less than 10 lakh rupees but not exceeding 2 crores for servicing sector. And for Midium industry; an investment not less than 5 crore rupees but not exceeding 10 crore rupees for manufacturing and not less than 2 crore but not exceeding 5 crore rupees for servicing unit. These allocation had been conditionalized with certain percentage of subsidy on fixed asset, fixed capital along with financial assistance towards working capital during incubating period (Say three years) along with soft loan for the moratorium period. (Without interest during moratorium period) As a result now in India, there are 26.1 million industries under MSME employing 59.7 million people where production stands at 45% of the country’s output and exporting 40% to various countries from these MSME sectors. Thus, we should also emulate this growth story of the country we belong to for holistic and inclusive progress for all the time to come. Therefore, the following points may be appropriate for us to consider as to generating employment through adopting innovative policies. 1. The present school syllabus needs to incorporate with “Employability skill management” in place of Alti. English from class VIII-X that provides business ideas (Asian Published for DGE&T Labor ministry) 2. There should be more private ITIs affiliated to DGE&T (Director General of Employment and Training) financial assistances are provided including stipends once registered and affiliated with DGE&T. under labor Ministry India 3. There should be at least an engineering college complete with modern infrastructure covering all essential engineering wings. 4. The state govt. should come forward with earmarked financial supports in the form of seed money to the technically eligible candidates under “Make in India” policy in partnership with the state centre. 5. There should be a screening

committee from the state level for various projects but it shouldn’t be on tribal line nor political line but purely on the merit and credibility of the entrepreneur profile that should be counted. 6. Selection of entrepreneur should be purely on the credibility of the candidate of his/her technical profile without any political interference whatsoever whether for manufacturing or servicing sector. 7. There is a window through the World Bank as per the policy of “Make in India” but condition applies from state to state and invariably the state of Nagaland needs to undertake the responsibilities and pledge to the W/B for financing under appropriate instrument. 8. Identify the balance of demand against supply, utility through proper market survey based on the entrepreneur project reports and its credibility and if found to be viable the matter be referred to the financial institution for further scrutiny and action. 9. Once a project is approved as per the project report of the individual entrepreneur and inspected, evaluated the viability, required amount, machineries may be provided but there should be constant inspection and assessment of the progress of the unit from the sanctioning authority as well as state’s observer that may be appointed from time to time to oversee the progress of the various projects sponsored by the state in partnership with centre. 10. Proposed project may be based on local demand and the feasibility of market sustainability and exporting especially agro & allied product such as food preservation, food processing and textile auxiliaries, sugar auxiliaries etc. 11. Whereas, should there be any willful defaulter miss utilizing the fund so sanctioned should be punished and his/her asset be confiscated and make to recover the whole amount without any leniency. Otherwise it has been time and again many entrepreneurs eat up the seed money under the cover of political patronage that created bad precedents. 12. The state should facilitate windows for marketing by encouraging the use of local product and exporting the end products to various destinations. In tune with the present hyper explosive situation of educated unemployed, instead of cursing our system of education which would be akin to wrong treatment for wrong diagnose for a simple ailment, there needs posthaste innovative policies through proper diagnosing and screening to overcome this malady. Yes, there is an answer for every problem provided that there’s political wills and commitment and this is what the Nagas expect from our policy makers to be more pragmatic in our approach to unemployment problems rather than just preaching from the highest pulpit and nevertheless another election is knocking on our door, we should make it a point that our leaders notice this sensitive issue and make an issue in their manifesto for inclusive development for all round of progress. India and safe digitalisation: A far cry

magine a one year old baby who has just learnt to walk on his own while occasionally falling to his knees and bottom. His beloved once daddy goes about in their neighbourhood and comes back with a brand new idea about how running around is good for our health and specially that professional runners not only are fit and healthy but also earn great wealth and fame. He suddenly starts urging and forcing the little baby to start running immediately and that too, faster than runners by profession. Now, even if I don’t continue elaborating further, you know how the story ends. Well, this is exactly what is happening in India right now. Our honourable PM Modi is undeniably enthusiastic about India taking this giant leap to a digitalised country and if one blindfolds an eye, this step is, prima facie, a very courageous and an applaudable one. But it is better to be realistic and face the truth than be blind for any reason and do nothing about the burn. More than 68% of India’s population are in rural areas. Of which, significant portion of them do not even have fundamental infrastructures like proper educational institutions , formal financial institutions, roads, basic goods and services, you name it. Looking at just a few urban parts of India having digital capabilities, should any authority declare a race on digitalizing the whole of a country at once? It is already bad enough for a lot of people that technologies needed for digitalization have not reached them. And it’s going to be worse when technologies do reach but the lack of technological know-how batters the system and functioning of the economy. So why not educate the people first? And educate every common man, literate or illiterate, in such a way he doesn’t feel nostalgic about the former system. And when I said “every common man” I meant the 1.31 billion people in India who are part of the economy of the country by default. Now let’s consider that the country has now overcome the issue of technological accessibility and its know-how. SECURITY is the next big problem. The people are going to put their entire hard earned money in a massive container and as we have considered, they also know how the container is operated. But is the container and its handler equipped enough to not let the money be snatched away by thieves

and criminals? We have lately been hearing about professional hackers waging cyber attacks in many parts of the world including India. These hackers are so good and smooth at what they do. But the worst thing is that they are on the wrong side. Defenders now have to outmaneuver these professionals. But even countries like China and US who have tight cyber securities with 1.25 lack and 91,080 cyber security experts, respectively, are practically bemused. So where does India, which is racing for total digitalization, stand with regard to cyber security standards? According to National Security Council, in 2013, the combined strength of cyber security experts in all organization in the government domain in India is only 556 experts. Even though it was expected by then that it will be increased by a few thousands, it is comparatively not enough- owing to the fact that, as per reliable source, a number of these so called “experts” still take pride in being able to merely hack into a bank-account of a person. Considering the position of offenders, this leads us back to the question I asked earlier: ‘’Is the government equipped enough to be entrusted with all the valuable assets and belongings of the citizens?’’ We, the common people, should not accept sufferings and even discomforts and simply give in to the commands of idealistic authorities with a utopian bend of mind. I don’t claim that the steps or the ideas are definitely bad, but what matters as much is the approach. “The end justifies the means” is a risky gameespecially in a democratic set-up where welfarism is a cornerstone. Growth of anything in its natural pace is the best growth. The sudden rigourous implementation of the idea of digital economy, what I feel, is pretty much unnatural and a drastic skip in processes which may lead to unforeseen disasters if proper precaution is skipped too. If you are suffering with something, it is you who can best explain the situation. If you think something is probably going to go wrong which would impact the people at large, it’s your duty to let the concerned authorities know about it. You see, you may not be interested in the change, but the change is interested in you. Motsuthung Yanthan, Dimapur, (motsuthungy. my@gmail.com)

Nagas are special people of God

od is the creator of the Universe, He is the Ruler over His creations. Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came to this earth as a representative of the Trinity God said this after His resurrection from death and before His ascending to Heaven, “All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” (Mathew 28:18). The Naga Christians are called out and chosen by this creator who holds all authorities in the Universe. The Nagas are chosen to partake the power of God, authority and the Kingdom of God. The Naga Christians must identify themselves as the most privilege creature of God and live according to the purpose and call of God. The Nagas are created, called and chosen to be the Christians. In the Bible, the Christians means the believers of Christ, followers of Christ, disciples of Christ, Servants of Christ, Children of God, people who have been redeemed by Christ. This group of people has been called “Christians.” They are chosen people, a royal priesthood, Holy Na-

tion, God’s own people, the heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. Christians are special treasure-possessions of God. Christians means whose Names are written in Heaven (Lk.10:20), they are the citizens of Heaven even though they live on this earth (Phil.3:20; John 17:14,16). Christianity is not a religion of Confusion. Jesus Christ, who came to save us knew very well that He was going to Heaven and be with His Father after His death and Resurrection. Paul, the Servant of God wrote in 2 Timothy 4:6-8 about his successful fight, race, faith and sure of righteous’ crown prepared for him. He was sure about His Salvation before his departure. Elijah and his colleague prophets knew well that Elijah was going to be taken into Heaven alive by this Christians’ God. Elijah, the prophet of the Living God knew it very well (2 Kings 2:1-12). We know Our Ancestor Abraham is in Heaven because Jesus Christ Himself said while He was on this earth (Luke 16:19-31). If any Naga Christian is not living with this hope

of Glory, you are wasting your time and misleading yourself. Hence, the word of God is calling you that you may return to Him as the prodigal (lost) son came back to his Father with repentance (Lk.15:1132). You must come to Him with sincere confession of your sins like King David (Psalm 51:1-19).The Spirit of God has on many occasions revealed that the Nagas are disobeying God, and the sins of the Nagas have become exceedingly numerous (Ezk.9:9). The Nagas should not continue to grieve the Spirit of God as the people in Noah’s day. Christians are truly precious than diamond and gold, see Mat.16:26 too. Christians should not throw themselves away in exchange of temporal materials and earthly entertainments. Every individual Naga must confess your sins for misusing and denying the privileges God offered you. From Chief Minister down to the poorest citizens of Nagaland need to repent before God like the people of Nineveh. When ungodly King of Nineveh ordered the citizens of Nineveh to fast &

pray with sack clothes and even their domestic creatures were made to fast along with them ! Will it be a difficult job for a Christian CM and rulers and Church leaders to talk together for National repentance and prayer Day? Besides, Nagas are kept in the box for many years now. If the Naga people delay to take God’s help, the worst situation may come to overtake us. Hence, the Naga Christians need to seek God’s face unitedly at the earliest to commit our issues to Him. During the time of Queen Esther and Mordecai, the Jews did 3 Days Fasting & Prayer and they had a great deliverance. The God who answered the prayer of the Jews and the citizens of Nineveh will certainly help us to solve our problems too. This God has indeed heard the prayer of the Naga Christians all these many days that we are sustained from untold difficulties and blessed this far. But many Nagas have forgotten God, entangled with sins and become unfaithful to God. If Christians does not live like Christians, there is a danger on this earthly life

as well as in the Kingdom to come. Therefore, the Naga Christians must encourage one another to live as Biblical Christians with hope of Salvation and rewards in Heaven. No human Government, Prime Minister, President or creatures that exist on this planet earth will be

able to care and offer us the Kingdom of God. No one can make the Nagas special beyond the plans and calls God has for the Nagas. The Naga Christians must know it better every day and remain as a special people of God. Atonoka Swu, Kohima

Sir,

Parking tax in Kohima

It is observed and felt that the parking tax collectors in Kohima town are not doing their job properly. They seem to be concerned only in collecting the parking fee. If they regulate properly the parking of vehicles in town, the parking spaces can be utilised judiciously. It is felt that they are supposed to regulate proper parking and at the same time regulate traffic for vehicles moving out from parking slots. Therefore, it is my favour appeal to KMC to kindly coordinate with their public servants so that they perform these kinds of duties as well so as to control the movement of vehicles in the town. And if this cannot be done it is also not necessary to collect parking tax, we also need to benefit from it. We are all aware that the road in Kohima town is very narrow. However, if the vehicle parking is regulated properly, the movement of traffic can be smoother and at the same time more parking spaces can be created. Otherwise, the very purpose of collecting tax is defeated. Azo Suokhrie, Kohima

June 30 deadline for Aadhaar not to be extended: Govt to SC

New Delhi, MAY 19 ( A G E N C IE S / I A N S ) : There is “no question” of extending the June 30 deadline for making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes, the Centre today told the Supreme Court. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the apex court that the idea behind making Aadhaar mandatory for welfare schemes was that the benefit should not go to “ghosts” as was noticed in schemes like the public distribution system (PDS). He also raised preliminary objection to the plea seeking interim relief and challenging various notifications issued by the Centre and told a bench, comprising Justices A. M Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha, that this matter should be listed for hearing before a five-judge constitution bench. Rohatgi said that earlier, some pleas seeking identical interim reliefs were also filed and those matters were pending before the apex court. The bench said it would be appropriate to hear all these pleas seeking interim relief together to “avoid multiplicity” and fixed the matter for hearing on June 27.

Mukul Rohatgi When the bench was considering whether to list the matter for hearing during the summer vacation, senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for the petitioner, said there was urgency involved in it and if the matter was not heard before June 30, “the other way was if they (Centre) extend the deadline”. “There is no question of that,” Rohatgi said. The court, which directed that all these pleas seeking interim relief should be listed before it on June 27, allowed the Centre to file a counter to the plea within three weeks. “Our attention was invited to (this) ... that the applications filed in other writ petitions pending in this court may involve similar issues which will have to be

considered...In our opinion, it is appropriate to hear these applications, having overlapping issues, together to avoid multiplicity of hearing on the same subject matter,” it said. At the outset, Rohatgi said identical interim reliefs were sought in a plea filed around six months ago in the apex court and it was tagged with the main petition which would be heard by a constitution bench. “There are a batch of pleas in this matter. In the first round, a bench of threejudges heard the matter. Thereafter, when the Centre was seeking some modification on the order passed by the court, the matter was listed before a fivejudge bench. Now, no other bench except the constitution bench can take up this matter,” he said. “This is like an ambush which is going on here. They (petitioner) cannot do this,” he said. Divan said that on May 12, he had mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Chief Justice J.S Khehar which had said it would be listed before an appropriate bench. Regarding Rohatgi’s submission, he said that after the pleas were filed earlier, the Centre had subsequently issued a

series of notifications making Aadhaar mandatory for schemes. Referring to the fivejudge bench order, Divan said it was specifically said that “Aadhaar is voluntary and it cannot be made compulsory and they cannot coerce people to give their biometrics“. “The five-judge bench order says the entire process has to be voluntary. One expects that the State will respect the order of this court. The bench had said that no person can be deprived of these schemes for want of Aadhaar,” he said. Divan said the entire architecture of Aadhaar was to put the citizens under “survelliance” and dominate them. However, the bench asked “why this second petition when you have already filed a plea earlier seeking similar reliefs“. Divan said the petition for interim reliefs were not listed for hearing before the court by the apex court registry. When the court asked Divan whether the orders passed by the threejudge and five-judge bench earlier were not serving the purpose, the senior counsel replied “they (Centre) are violating those orders”.

NEW DELHI, MAY 19 (AGENCIES): The Election Commission is all ready for a public test of its electronic voting machines (EVMs). “We will announce the schedule for this challenge to EVMs tomorrow,” an EC spokesman said today. At an all-party meeting on May 12, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi had said political parties had to demonstrate their claim that EVMs used in the recent assembly polls could have been tampered with. In 2009, the Commission had held out a similar challenge when it demonstrated the functioning of EVMs brought in from various parts of the country to Vigyan Bhavan. The EC will also demonstrate the use of EVMs and paper trail machines at a media conference tomorrow. At the all-party meet, most parties said EVMs could be used for future elections if they came with a paper trail machine, which would enable the electorate to check if their vote had been registered against the person of their choice. Some parties, however, said the EVMs could not be trusted+ and the EC should revert to the old ballot paper system, where people inked their choices on a sheet of paper.

Aircel-Maxis case: HC seeks Marans’ reply on ED plea NEW DELHI: A plea by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposing the discharge of the Maran brothers in a money laundering case in connection with the Aircel- Maxis deal today led the Delhi High Court to seek their response. Justice S P Garg issued notice to former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, industrialist Kalanithi Maran and his wife Kavery Kalanithi, South Asia FM Ltd (SAFL), its managing director K Shanmugam and Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd (SDTPL) and sought their replies within four weeks on the ED’s plea against a February 2 order of a special court. The special CBI court had by way of two separate orders dismissed the cases lodged by the CBI and the ED against the Marans and others in connection with the Aircel-Maxis deal. The trial court had said that no prima facie case warranting framing of charges was made out against any of the accused on the basis of materials placed on record before it. Dealing with the money-laundering case, the trial court had observed that since the accused were discharged in the case of scheduled offences registered by CBI and ED, the matter has become

Dayanidhi Maran “groundless” and nothing survived in it. In its petition, the ED has said the special court had not considered the submissions on the alleged illegal acts committed by corporate entities involved in the case. “As a result, (the court) has failed to appreciate the roles of Kalanithi Maran and Kavery Kalanithi and their use of Maran group companies in committing illegal acts,” the agency’s petition has claimed. The ED has also contended that the trial court “failed to appreciate” that an acquittal in the CBI case did not imply there could be no proceedings against the accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency has claimed that the trial court “erred” in holding that the commission of the offence was an essential condition for estab-

lishing the crime of money laundering. “It is a settled position of law that prosecution of the offence of money laundering can proceed independently of the prosecution of the scheduled offence,” the ED has said, adding the trial court had “failed to appreciate” that money laundering was a “stand alone offence” in law. It has further claimed that the ED’s attachments and confiscation of “the proceeds of crime” under the PMLA can “lawfully proceed” and that such restrictions cannot be lifted if the accused are discharged in the scheduled offence. The ED had earlier filed an appeal against the special court’s order in the Supreme Court, but the apex court asked it to move the High Court instead. In the money laund e r i n g c a s e, E D h a d chargesheeted the Maran brothers, Kalanithi’s wife Kavery, SAFL, Shanmugam and SDTPL under the PMLA. It had also attached Marans’ assets worth Rs 748.52 crore in this case under the PMLA. CBI had also moved the high court challenging the February 2 order discharging the Marans and others in the Aircel-Maxis case.

SC registry denies Justice Karnan’s plea Ex-Coal Secretary H.C. Gupta convicted in coal block case NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has refused to accept for hearing a plea of Calcutta high court judge Justice C S Karnan for recall of his six-month jail term for contempt of court. The petition was held as “not maintainable” by the apex court registry. Karnan, through his lawyers, had moved the apex court seeking recall of the May 9 order of the seven-judge bench which had held him guilty of contempt of court and sentenced him to six months imprisonment by ordering the West Bengal police to take him into custody forthwith. Karnan has not been arrested yet. Calcutta high court judge Justice C S Karnan.

Later, CBI filed a closure report saying it did not find sufficient evidence against the firm and its director to proceed with the case. But, it was rejected by the court which ordered a probe agency to conduct further probe. Thereafter, CBI filed an investigation report against the accused person. On August 16 last year, Gupta broke down inside the court and sought to withdraw his bail plea saying he intended to face trial from jail since he was going through financial difficul-

ties. The court asked the former officer to rethink his plea and thereafter, Gupta withdrew his application. Besides this, Gupta is also facing trial in nine cases relating to the allocation of coal blocks. He along with other accused have denied the charges. It was the third judgement by the special court exclusively dealing with coal block allocation cases. Besides this case, over 20 other cases investigated by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate are pending before the court.

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS): The Congress on Friday blamed the BJP-led central government for what it dubbed “jobless growth” in the country, and added that the ruling party has failed to “fulfil its election promise of creating two crore jobs annually”. “Before coming to power, the BJP manifesto talked of creating two crore jobs every year, but on the ground we now have a ‘pink slip’ situation,” senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the media here. “Alarming figures are showing an abysmal growth and the pink-slip season. According to Labour Bureau data, the growth in eight labour-intensive sectors of the Indian economy is a mere 1.1 per cent, which in number terms is just 1.35 lakh,” he said. “If these are the ‘acchhe din’ (good days) (the BJP promised), then obviously the government’s definition of good days is those without jobs,” the Congress leader quipped. Reeling out comparative figures on employment generation during the earlier United Progressive Alliance government’s term, Singhvi said: “In 2009-10, 8.9 lakh persons got jobs, while in 2010-11 it were 9.29 lakh.” “In 2013-14, only 4.21 lakh people got jobs, while the numbers fell to 1.35 lakh in 2016-17,” he said. As for celebrations in connection with the three years of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre, Singhvi asked: “What are they celebrating?”

Chartered Account Amit Goyal, who was also facing trial in the case, was acquitted of all charges. The court was hearing a case pertaining to alleged irregularities in the allocation of Thesgora-B Rudrapuri coal block in Madhya Pradesh to KSSPL. The CBI had lodged an

Mumbai, May 19 (PTI): The Ministry of Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises (MSME) has a target to employ around five crore people through the khadi industry over the next five years, Union minister Giriraj Singh has said. “We have made a plan to introduce solar-run spinning wheels in KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission) so that it can provide employment to over five crore people throughout the nation in the next five years,” Singh told PTI here yesterday. The Union Minister of State for MSME was speaking here on the sidelines of an event, ‘Khadi by Raymond’. “Presently khadi is less than one per cent of textiles, but due to concerted efforts in the last two years, the khadi industry sales have gone up from Rs 35,000 crore in 2014 to about Rs 52,000 crore,” he said. Security forces will be tough against militants in J&K: Jaitley

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley with army officers during his visit to Srinagar.

“Terrorism and militancy are both aimed against the Indian state, its sovereignty and also against the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. “Violence eventually impacts security and life of ordinary residents of the valley; therefore, the violence is not only against security forces but also against innocents who are losing their lives.” The Minister said those who have taken to arms will not be spared. “With an average citizen, irrespective of their political views, we’d like them to be on the Indian side in this debate. But as far as those who are killing people -- we can’t extend the same facility to them. They will have to be treated as serious insurgency problem and dealt with accordingly,” he said. “Those who have taken to violence of this magnitude will certainly be (held) accountable for their ac-

tions,” Jaitley said. “It is a great opportunity for us to communicate to the people here that India as a country will show full concern and compassion as far as the average peace-loving citizen is concerned. We want you to have a peaceful and prosperous life.” He said taking to violence only unleashed a “cycle of violence” and that the aspirations of the people can be addressed only when there is peace. “There are public sentiments in every Indian state and these sentiment will have to be addressed; but at the and of the day... when you take to violence and start killing security forces and your own people, you unleash a cycle that does not stop,” the Defence Minister said. “... resources meant for economic development are being used for (ensuring) security,” Jaitley said. About his visit to the Line of Control in north

Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said: “I compliment the Army for its preparedness and enthusiasm. Our soldiers are fully confident they will not allow any infiltration in those areas. And if there is any effort or any ceasefire violation, our soldiers will give adequate response.” General Officer Commanding of the Baramullabased Dagger Division, Major General R.P. Kalita accompanied Jaitley to the LoC.

Pak funding to create unrest in the state

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday said that the fact that Hurriyat leaders were taking money from Pakistan was already known in “informed circles”, and called it a conspiracy against not just India but also the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The minister’s comments came as the National Investigation Agency filed a case against separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and other Hurriyat leaders for allegedly receiving money from the Lashkar-e-Taiba to fund “subversive” activities in Jammu and Kashmir. “What was known already in informed circles has only been proved... It was known that they (Hurriyat) were being funded from across the border... funded to create unrest, and were funded to burn schools, kill people and create unrest in the valley,” Jaitley said here.

minorities in India face violence especially Dalit Christians and Muslims and hurting religious sentiments with students being compelled to take part in mass yoga “Surya Namaskar.” Thus defence of one’s religious beliefs should not be construed as being against any political party as the church was only against policies of any party which made Christians insecure a n d d e f e n c e l e s s, s a i d NBCC. Further, NBCC said it was also not against any development programme of the government but to give the message that any religion should be allowed to flourish peacefully without interference and influence by the majority and to maintain the secular flavour as guaranteed by the constitution.

Differences created by vested interests: CMO

Meanwhile, the Nagaland Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has stated that NPF-led DAN government would not let “petty quar-

rels” of some villages in the two states sour relations between the two traditional neighbours, especially now there were friendly/alliance governments in two states. In a press release, media cell CMO stated that differences that were there between the communities in the recent past were creations of politically vested interests fueled by political leaders for their own selfish gains. However, CMO said the present dispensations in two states were determined to maintain cordial relations. According to CMO, during press meet in Imphal by the chief ministers of Nagaland and Manipur recently, some reporters asked the reaction of the Nagaland chief minister on the structure on movement of Mao taxis in Angami area. However, unaware of such situation, CMO staffers told the chief minister it was not so and the chief minister re-

plied accordingly. But on their return to Nagaland, it was informed by CMO that such a restriction has been imposed on Mao taxis in Southern Angami areas. However, during the Imphal visit, the CMO said both the chief minister discussed on mutually beneficial and improvement of relations between the two neighbours including establishment/improvement of Manipur State Transport Corporation area in Purana Bazaar Dimapur and NST Complex in Imphal. Manipur education minister even suggested that Nagaland government construct building/ complex for Manipur in Dimapur and likewise Manipur government reciprocate by constructing NST complex at Imphal. CMO stated that a team of legislators from Manipur was expected shortly to Nagaland to pursue the matter.

Iran votes for its next president

TEHRAN, MAY 19 (AFP): Polls opened in Iran today with voters set to give their verdict on President Hassan Rouhani’s policy of opening up to the world and efforts to rebuild the stagnant economy. He faces stiff competition from hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi, 56, who has positioned himself as a defender of the poor and called for a much tougher line with the West. Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cast his ballot just minutes after polls opened at 8:00 am (0330 GMT). “The destiny of the country is in the hand of Iranians,” he told reporters as he voted in his compound in Tehran. Long lines had already formed at polling stations around the country. Rouhani, a 68-year-old moderate cleric, has sought to frame the election as a choice between greater civil liberties and “extremism”. He has pushed the boundaries over the past fortnight, criticising the continued arrest of reformist leaders and activists, and calling on security agencies not to interfere in the vote.

In this photo released by official website of the office of the Iranian Presidency, President Hassan Rouhani holds his ballot while voting for the presidential and municipal councils election at a polling station in Tehran May 19, 2017. (AP/PTI)

Raisi says he will stick by the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, that saw curbs to Iran’s atomic programme in exchange for sanctions relief, but he points to the continued economic slump as proof that Rouhani’s diplomatic efforts have failed. “Instead of using the capable hands of our youths to resolve problems, they are putting our economy in the hands

of foreigners,” Raisi said at a final rally in the holy city of Mashhad on Wednesday. Rouhani responded by calling on voters to keep hardliners away from Iran’s delicate diplomatic levers. “One wrong decision by the president can mean war and a correct decision can mean peace,” he said at his own Mashhad rally. The election comes at a tense moment in US-Iran re-

lations. Rouhani gained a reprieve on Wednesday when the administration of US President Donald Trump agreed to continue waiving nuclear-related sanctions, keeping the deal on track for now. But Tr ump has launched a 90-day review of the accord that could see it abandoned, and is visiting Iran’s bitter regional rival Saudi Arabia this weekend.

Instagram ‘worst for young mental health’ L O N D O N, M AY 1 9 (IANS): Instagram is rated as the worst social media platform when it comes to its impact on young people’s mental health, a poll conducted in the UK says. The poll conducted Royal Society for Public Health (RCPH) asked 1,479 people aged 14-24 were asked a series of questions about whether YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter had an impact on their health and well-being, the BBC reported. Pa r t i c i p a n t s we r e asked to score each platform on 14 health and wellbeing issues. Based on these ratings, YouTube was considered to have the most positive impact on mental health, followed by Twitter and then Facebook. Snapchat and Instagram were given the lowest scores overall. The RSPH re por t warns that “social media may be fuelling a mental health crisis” in young people, reports the BBC.

Rape probe against Assange dropped STOCKHOLM, MAY 19 (AFP): Swedish prosecutors today dropped a seven-year rape investigation into Julian Assange, a legal victory for the WikiLeaks founder who has been holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012. But British police said they would still arrest Assange if he tried to leave the embassy, saying he had breached the terms of his bail by refusing to turn himself in when an arrest warrant was issued in 2012. Today was the deadline for the public prosecutor’s office to either renew the pan-European arrest warrant or lift it. “Director of Public Prosecution, Marianne Ny, has today decided to discontinue the investigation regarding suspected rape by Julian Assange,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. Shortly after the announcement, Assange posted on Twitter a picture of himself smiling broadly, without comment. A lawyer on Assange’s legal team, Per Samuelsson, told Swedish radio the decision was “a total victory”, saying that Assange was “of course happy and relieved”.

FILE -- Julian Assange on the balcony of the Ecuadorean Embassy in central London in 2016.

Samuelsson also said that the decision meant Assange “is free to leave the embassy whenever he wants”, though he later told the TT news agency that he did not know when Assange might leave. “What I do know is that Sweden does not stop him from doing it. Sweden is out of the game,” he said. Another lawyer, Christophe Marchand, told AFP that “We have been waiting a long time for this decision”. “Julian Assange has been a victim of a huge abuse of procedure. We are very pleased and very

moved, as this marks the end of his nightmare.” Ny and Chief Prosecutor Ingrid Isgren were briefing reporters on the decision in Stockholm. The 45-year-old Australian has always denied the 2010 rape allegations, which he feared would see him extradited to the United States and tried over the leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret US military and diplomatic documents. He has been living at the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012, and the British police have said they will arrest Assange as soon as he walks out of the embassy because he has broken his conditions for bail -- a relatively minor offence under British law -- by failing to surrender on June 29, 2012 for extradition to Sweden. Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service said that breach of bail is punishable by up to a year in prison or a fine. Assange’s Swedish lawyer last month filed a new motion demanding that the arrest warrant be lifted after US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in April that arresting Assange would be “a priority”.

BEIJING, MAY 19 (IANS): Beijing and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) have adopted a draft of a multilateral code of conduct in the South China Sea, officials said on Friday. Representatives of China and the 10 Asean nations (Burma, Brunei, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) reached an agreement on the draft on Thursday, following two days of meetings in the city of Guiyang. The draft establishes a solid foundation for the next round of negotiations, said Liu Zhenmin, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, at a press conference. The Asean had pledged in April to finalise the code of conduct to diffuse tensions in the South China Sea, Efe news reported. Four Asean members, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam, along with Taiwan and China, contest the sovereignty of several islands of this strategic maritime space, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety.

Cholera outbreak in Yemen kills 242

A Yemeni man suspected of being infected with cholera receives treatment at a hospital in the capital Sana’a on May 10, 2017.

M A N I L A , M AY 1 9 (IANS): The Philippines and US on Friday concluded their annual joint military exercises. The 2017 Balikatan exercise, in which fewer troops participated than in previous years and which was limited to counterterrorism and disaster combat drills, ended with a ceremony at the headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Quezon, Efe news reported. Nearly 5,400 soldiers -- 2,800 from the Philippines and 2,600 from the US -- participated in the 12-day exercises, along with several others from Australia and Japan, as compared to 11,000 in 2016. In his speech, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, General Eduardo Ano, said the exercises have improved the joint operability of the troops and strengthened bilateral ties. The 2017 Balikatan edition was limited to counter-terrorism drills for the provinces of Samar, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora and Nueva Ecija and disaster combat techniques, including large-scale evacuations and search and rescue operations.

Japan cabinet approves bill allowing emperor’s abdication TOKYO, MAY 19 (AFP): The Japanese government today approved a one-off bill allowing ageing Emperor Akihito to step down from the Chrysanthemum Throne, in the first such abdication in two centuries. The bill is likely to receive swift final approval in parliament, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s cabinet signed off on the legislation. Abdication must take place within three years of the bill becoming law. Earlier this year reports suggested that 83-year-old Akihito could step down at the end of December 2018 and be replaced by Crown Prince Naruhito on January 1, 2019. Reports of his desire to retire surprised Japan when they emerged last July. In August he publicly cited age and declining health, which was interpreted as his wish to hand the crown to his eldest son. But current Japanese law has no provision for abdication, thus requiring politicians to craft legislation to make it possible. The status of the emperor is highly sensitive in Japan given its 20th century history of war waged in the name of Akihito’s father Hirohito, who died

Emperor Akihito

in 1989. Revered as a demigod before and during the conflict, Hirohito was reduced to a mere figurehead as part of postwar reforms. Akihito has won plaudits for seizing upon the constitutionally-prescribed role of national symbol and there is wide sympathy for his wish to retire. He has been treated for prostate cancer and also had heart surgery. And though he has cut back on some of his duties, he still maintains a busy official schedule, including occasional overseas visits. A majority of the Japanese public supports a permanent law on abdication and they have also expressed support for the current bill to help enable Akihito’s smooth transition from the throne. “He hasn’t had a way

to retire, but I think he should be able to and enjoy his golden years,” 75-yearold Seio Ichijo told AFP as he strolled outside the Imperial Palace with his wife. The leading opposition Democratic Party has argued the law should be permanently changed to ensure stable future successions, but has reportedly agreed to the current oneoff bill after talks with the ruling bloc. Some scholars and politicians have argued that changing the law to allow any emperor to abdicate would risk Japan’s monarchs becoming subject to political manipulation. While abdications are far from unknown in Japanese history -- the last one was in 1817 -- some people still believe being emperor is a lifetime job.

G E N E VA , M AY 1 9 (AFP): A cholera outbreak in war-ravaged Yemen has killed 242 people, and left nearly 23,500 others sick in the past three weeks alone, the World Health Organization said today. The UN health agency said that in the past day alone, 20 cholera deaths and 3,460 suspected cases had been registered in the country, where two-thirds of the population are on the brink of famine. “The speed of the resurgence of this cholera

epidemic is unprecedented,” WHO country representative for Yemen Nevio Zagaria told reporters in Geneva by phone from Yemen, warning that a quarter of a million people could become sick by the end of the year. Cholera is a highly contagious bacterial infection spread through contaminated food or water. Lavrov arrived in Nicosia on Thursday to attend a foreign ministers’ meeting of the Council of Europe at the end of Cyprus’s presidency this month. CANBERRA, MAY 19 (IANS): An Australian minister on Friday launched an urgent probe to determine how an alien enthusiast group received thousands of dollars in taxpayers’ funds. Social Services Minister Christian Porter said he was unaware his department had approved nearly 6,000 Australian dollars ($4,500) worth of grants for the Tuggerah Lakes UFO Group on the New South Wales central coast since 2013, the Australian Broadcasting Corp reported. The funding was first provided by the opposition Labour government to assist with the cost of transporting volunteers with a disability. “I’m sure they’re very nice people and there are lots of volunteers who are getting something out of it, but looking at it from my perspective, representing taxpayers, it didn’t seem to pass a common sense test,” said Porter, an avid sci-fi fan.

Zagaria pointed out that humanitarian workers cannot access some parts of the country, and that the number of suspected cholera cases could be far higher than those registered. Yemen’s conflict has killed more than 8,000 people and wounded around 40,000 since March 2015,

according to the WHO. Zagaria pointed out that many of the remaining health workers in the country had not been paid for seven months. At the same time, he said, lacking electricity meant water pumping stations were only functioning in an intermittent way, and the sewer systems were damaged. “The population is using water sources that are contaminated,” he said. Zagaria said the United Nations agencies were preparing to “release an emergency response cholera plan in the next 48 hours,” aimed at dramatically scaling up the number of treatment centres and rehydration centres. At the same time, he said there was a dire need for funding to help Yemen authorities to make the necessary infrastructure repairs. “The spread of the disease is too big and they need substantial support, in terms of repairing the sewer system,...treating and chlorinating the water sources.” Without dramatic efforts to halt the spread of the disease, “the price that we will pay in terms of life will be extremely high,” he warned.

iven that Yusaku Maezawa has paid $110.5m (£85.4m) for Jean-Michel Basquiat’s painting, one has to accept that to at least one person, it is worth $110.5m. I have to say it strikes me as a bonkers price to pay. It’s not that Basquiat wasn’t a good artist, he was. I couldn’t put him in the same bracket as a Rembrandt or a Picasso, Cezanne or Manet, but it’s perfectly reasonable to argue that he has his place in art history and fits in within the canon of Western art. There is a line that can be drawn from Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Picasso which arrives at Basquiat’s graffiti inspired expressionist paintings. You can see the influence within them of Jean Dubuffet’s Art Brut, Jackson Pollock’s early surrealism and Keith Haring’s post-pop creations.

They are poetic, political and powerful. But it’s difficult to know where the value lies. Is it in the aesthetic quality of the artwork? Or is it in the romantic story associated with the artist who in latter years, maybe since Julian Schanbel’s biopic, has become something of a mythical figure? I suspect the latter plays a large part, particularly it has been reported Maezawa wants to use the painting as a foundation work in his new museum in Japan. The question is, is this the peak for a Basquiat - who was prolific in his short life - or just the beginning of what might become a Basquiat boom? I imagine there are collectors who own pieces by him (but the majority are still in private hands) who will be on the phone to one of the big auction houses to see what theirs might be worth. What’s for sure, is that Basquiat artworks are now out of reach of any UK institution to address the fact there are no examples of his work in prominent UK galleries. Which is a shame especially as there were opportunities in the past when his prices were less high.

Cornell’s death blamed on drugs

T

he family of late Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell have raised the possibility of prescription drugs influencing the singer’s suicide. Cornell passed away on Wednesday evening (May 17). He was found dead in his hotel room shortly after performing with Soundgarden in Detroit. He was 52. Yesterday (May 18), a medical examiner determined that Cornell committed suicide by hanging. In a newly-release statement released via attorney Kirk Pasich, Cornell’s family says they believe that “if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions.” The statement adds: “Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris – or if any substances contributed to his demise.” The statement also cites the side effects of anxiety medication Ativan to include “paranoid or suicidal thoughts, slurred speech and impaired judgment”. Cornell’s wife Vicky Cornell has also released a separate statement, suggesting that taking too much of his anxiety medication may have contributed to her husband’s suicide. “Chris’s

O

n Ruskin Bond’s 83rd birthday on Friday, filmmaker Bhargav Saikia unveiled the first look of his forthcoming short film “The Black Cat”, based on a story by the celebrated author. The film features veteran actor Tom Alter as Ruskin Bond and Shernaz Patel as Miss Bellows. The first look shows Miss Bellows in a black dress alongside a black cat. Saikia also has a special message for the author. Talking about the story, Shernaz said: “This particular story by the master storyteller Ruskin Bond is wonderfully eerie and magical, and will definitely be enjoyed by all.”

death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband. He was my best friend,” Vicky wrote. “His world revolved around his family first and, of course, his music second. He flew home for Mother’s Day to spend time with our family. He flew out mid-day Wednesday, the day of the show, after spending time with the children. When we spoke before the show, we discussed plans for a vacation over Memorial Day and other things we wanted to do.” “When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different. When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him. What hap-

pened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life.” As tributes poured in for Cornell following the news of his passing, Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello posted an emotional eulogy to his bandmate. “I love you, brother,” the tribute began. “Thank you for your friendship and your humor and your intellect and your singular and unmatched talent. It was a great honor to know you as a friend and as a band mate.”

Brad Pitt ‘in shock’ over Cornell’s deaths

Actor Brad Pitt is reportedly devastated over the death of his friends - former Paramount CEO Brad Grey and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell. “He is devastated and in shock. He is trying to process the loss of two great friends. This has hit him very hard,” a source told eonline.com. Earlier this week, Cornell, 52, was found dead in his hotel bathroom by a family friend in what is believed to be a suicide, according to Detroit Police.

I really like Jack Sparrow. The moment I saw ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, I became a fan of the character. It’s a major challenge to do this. It’s not easy to dub him,” Arshad told IANS over phone from Mumbai. “It was a challenge to dub him (Depp) when he

was drunk in the scenes. It’s hard to play a drunk man. Altogether, I am fond of this franchise and looking forward to more of it,” added Arshad, who is currently shooting for “Golmaal Again”. Depp will return with the fifth instalment of the popular “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise. The film, which will also feature Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin McNally and Geoffrey Rush, will be released in India by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films on May 26.

Women’s hockey test: India Indian team enter Archery WC final suffer fourth defeat to NZ SHANGHAI, May 19 (PTI): India’s compound men’s archery team on Friday advanced to the final of the season’s first World Cup. The team comprising Abhishek Verma, Chinna Raju Srither and Amanjeet Singh made the final after getting the better of USA’s Reo Wilde, Steve Anderson and Braden Gellenthien 232-230 in a closelyfought semifinal. Verma then coupled with Jyothi Surekha Vennam to enter the bronze medal play-off in mixed pair event. However, Indian recurve archers, including Olympians Atanu Das and Deepika

Kumari, cut a sorry figure as they bowed out of their respective events early. Trailing by one point (116-117) after the second set, Indian compound men’s team bounced back to clinch the third 60-57 with all perfect 10s including one X (closest to centre). They then held on to their nerves in the decider to clinch the issue. The fourth seeded India will take on 10th seeds Colombia in Saturday’s summit clash. In the mixed pair bronze medal match, Verma and Jyothi with take on the USA. The duo lost to second seeded Korea 152 -158 in the semis.

The Indian defence too stitched together a wellstructured strategy to ensure a goalless third and fourth quarters. While India had dominated with the ball possession (57 per cent as opposed to New Zealand’s 43 per cent) in their previous game, New Zealand came up with new tactics to deny the visitors any such advantage. The final quarter too saw the Indians make strong attempts on goal in their bid to make a comeback into the game but New Zealand stayed in control to win the match.

Kane hits four as Spurs thrash Leicester Mumbai beat KKR to enter IPL final

England and Spurs star striker Kane watches his effort drift past Schmeichel and beyond the reach of any Leicester players L o n d o n, M ay 1 9 (Agencies): A superb Harry Kane hit four goals as Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Leicester City 6-1 at the King Power Stadium. The 23-year-old, who now leads the Premier League goalscoring charts on 26, will claim the golden boot for a second consecutive season if Romelu Lukaku (24) fails to outscore the Englishman in the final round of Premier League games on Sunday.

Son Heung-min hit a brace for the Lilywhites in what was a superb attacking performance from start to finish, leaving their unbeaten record at the King Power intact whilst recording their biggest away win in the Premier League. Despite Ben Chilwell scoring for the Foxes after the interval, the home-team now equal Liverpool’s record of 18 defeats suffered by reigning champions in a 38-match season, set in 1906-07.

Benzema dropped again from France national squad

Karim Benzema Paris, May 19 (IANS): Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema continues to be snubbed by France coach Didier Deschamps as he was left out on Thursday from the national squad for the next three international matches. The coach said that the absence of the player, despite the good season he is having with Real Madrid, is because a team was created with balance and harmony, implying that Benzema is not part of this, reports Efe. France is set to face Paraguay in a friendly in Rennes on June 2, Sweden

on June 9 in Stockholm in a Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier and England in a friendly at Saint Denis on June 13. The called squad includes Barcelona’s Lucas Digne and Samuel Umtiti, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann. However, Atletico’s Kevin Gameiro is out of the call, leaving his post to Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette. The coach has also called the coveted Monaco forward Kylian Mbappe, 18. Deschamps said he is not affected by the recent criticism from Benzema over his absence from the squad since October 2015. The coach explained that this squad was built before Euro 2016 and solidified during that competition, in which they reached the final, adding that the team now has balance and harmony thanks to their competitive dynamic which is a priority to him.

Vardy was played in on goal by Wilfred Ndidi, but the Frenchman made a mess of his clearance, leaving youngster Chilwell to calmly find the net from the edge of the area for his first senior goal. But the host’s comeback was halted four minutes later, this time Kane showing all the qualities of a goal-poacher when he dispatched his header from six-yards out after Victor Wanyama found the Englishman at the back-post. And the tie was dead and buried in the 70th minute when Spurs once again showed their ruthlessness, with Son using Kane’s run on the left as a decoy before displaying great feet and firing his long-range effort past Kasper Schmeichel into the bottom-right corner. The home side were struggling, and with the rampant Spurs and Kane looking to add to their tally, they collapsed, with Kane hitting two goals in three minutes as the game came to a close, becoming the first Spurs player to register four hat-tricks in a season since the great Jimmy Greaves.

Karthik replaces injured Pandey for Champions Trophy

Aizawl FC could make a backdoor entry into ISL

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS): Seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik was on Thursday called as a replacement for injured batsman Manish Pandey for next month’s Inter national Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee have named middle-order batsman and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik as replacement for Manish Pandey, who sustained a left side strain during a practice session, in the India team for the upcoming International Cricket Council Champions Trophy,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement. Dinesh Karthik, who played for the Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League (IPL), amassed 361 runs, which included two brilliant half centuries. Manish Pandey, who represents the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), had missed Wednesday’s eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad due to the injury.

A i z aw l , M ay 1 9 (Agencies): I-League champions Aizawl FC could make a shocking entry into the Indian Super League next season as they are locked in talks with corporations who would be willing to sponsor them. The Mizoram outfit are looking for funds to enter the ISL, and they are hoping a big conglomerate comes to their aid. Aizawl’s future in the highest level of Indian football has been thrown into jeopardy after the AIFF planned to increase the duration of ISL to seven months from next season onward. Although Indian football’s governing body has maintained that I-League will still remain the country’s top league, the extension of ISL’s duration would certainly mean a death knell for the decadeold I-League. Therefore, it is almost certain that the I-League will enjoy diminished coverage henceforth owing to the ISL’s greater pulling power and financial returns. According to sources close to Sportskeeda, Aizawl are looking for a principal sponsor but the

Mumbai Indians bowler Jasprit Bumrah with teammates celebrates the wicket of Chris Lynn of Kolkata Knight Riders. (PTI) Bengaluru, May 19 (IANS): Krunal Pandya’s unbeaten 30-ball 45 helped Mumbai Indians record a facile six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL second qualifier clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday. Mumbai, who finished on 111/4 in 14.3 overs, will now take on Steve Smith’s Rising Pune Supergiant in the final on Sunday. Chasing just 108, Krunal joined hands with skipper Rohit Sharma for a 54-run fourth wicket stand to steady Mumbai’s ship after early hiccups which left them on 34/3 at one stage.

Rohit (26) gave away his wicket cheaply, picking out Ankit Rajpoot at deep square leg off Nathan Coulter-Nile’s delivery. At the end of Powerplay, Mumbai were in a spot of bother at 36/3. But once Rohit and Krunal saw off the initial few overs, it was Mumbai all the way as the latter played the role of aggressor with deft fours and lusty sixes to inflict a 16th defeat on their rivals in the two sides’ 21st meeting. Krunal’s innings was laced with eight fours and no six. With him at the crease was Keiron Pollard (not out 9) when Krunal hit the winning runs.

Earlier, Mumbai legspinner Karn Sharma took four wickets to bowl out KKR for a paltry 107 in 18.5 overs. Karn (4/16) was brilliant on the night taking the wickets of Sunil Narine (10), Gautam Gambhir (12), Colin de Grandhomme (0) and Ishank Jaggi (28) to derail KKR’s innings. Suryakumar Yadav (31) and Jaggi put a semblance of a fight with a 56-run association for the sixth wicket but could not script a turnaround as the former fell in the 18th over looking to accelerate. Umesh Yadav (2) was not out as Rajpoot (4) was the last man to be dismissed.

Aizawl FC players celebrate after winning I-League. club are keeping things under wraps because of the “People’s Club” image they have created with their fairy tale title win this season. Should the deal to join ISL fall through, it would paint Aizawl in a bad light, leaving them in a situation where the sheen of their title win will fade considerably. However, Aizawl also have reasons to look out for potential tie-ups because of the fact that the club’s image is an attractive one at the moment and this is potentially a good time for them to cash in on their recent success.

Furthermore, another attraction to link up with Aizawl is that the I-League champions will play in the AFC Champions League next season, so the potential benefits of any corporate to sponsor the I-League champions is immense. However, one sticking point is the fact that out of the 10 cities shortlisted for the bidding process to invite new teams to the 2017–18 ISL, none is from North East India. That is a potential problem for Aizawl but it can be circumvented if they play out of another city and, after a brief pe-

riod, move into their home state of Mizoram. The Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl doesn’t adhere to AFC criteria, hence renovation work at the ground has already been started. The Mizoram State Government is actively involved in the stadium scheme of things, but should Aizawl consider playing in the ISL, they will have to cough up a franchise fee of Rs 15 crores. In such a scenario, it remains to be seen whether Aizawl will be defending their I-League title next season or fight it out among the cash-rich ISL clubs.

N e w D e l h i , M ay 19 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started a probe against two doctors who were allegedly sent to Rio Olympics 2016 with the contingent of Indian athletes without having the requisite qualifications. The agency has registered a preliminary inquiry in the case against Pawan Deep Singh and R.S. Negi who were given the green signal to visit the international multi-sport event held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5-21, 2016, informed sources said on Friday. Over 11,000 athletes from across the world, including 118 from India, participated in the event. The CBI is probing the case from all possible angles like the role of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) members who permitted the two doctors to go to the Rio Olympics along with the Indian athletes, the sources added.

After a bright start, it was Spurs who carved out the first opportunity in the eight minute when Son cut inside from the right before sending his shot narrowly over the bar, the South Korean searching for his 20th of the season. Leicester hit Spurs with their trademark counter-attack moments later when Riyad Mahrez shook off the challenge of three players before the Algerian picked out Jamie Vardy inside the box, but the 30-

year-old’s effort was easily dealt with by Hugo Lloris. The visitors started to gain a stranglehold on the tie, and they should have broke the deadlock in 14th minute when Dele Alli found Son before the former Bayer Leverkusen man fired his effort well over from a dangerous area. Son was quickly becoming one of Spurs’ biggest threats, and the 29year-old was at the heart of the opener after he was picked out by Toby Alderweireld with a mouth-watering 60-yard pass, before cutting back to Kane who found the back of the net. Alli and Son were instrumental in the final third for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and it was the latter who produced a sublime scooping flick into the path of Son, before the number seven smashed his shot into the bottom-left corner to hand his side a deserved two-goal cushion in the 35th minute. After an unimpressive first-half, the Foxes started the second-half on the front-foot and pulled one back just before the hour-mark when Lloris came to sweep up after
