Colony residents object to use of buildings for quarantine facilities Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 6 (NPN): As thousands of those stranded citizens in various cities outside Nagaland begin arriving in droves, the state government seems to find itself in a difficult situation as it does not have adequate quarantine facilities to accommodate all the returning citizens. In order to prepare itself to accommodate such a huge number, the state gover nment had made preparations to quarantine the returnees at buildings offered by educational institutions. When contacted by Nagaland Post, state chief secretary, Temjen Toy confirmed that the “sheer number” of people expected to return back has placed a huge problem for the government in finding adequate number of accommodation for quarantine facilities. However, according many colonies/villages/ wards have asked the institutions not to allow their buildings to be used as quarantine facilities. On this aspect, Toy lamented that though

many schools, colleges and other institutions have come forward and offered the usage of its buildings, some “colony people” have raised objections to allow quarantine in their colonies. Toy lauded the educational institutes for coming forward to help but lamented that colony people were not allowing use of such buildings. “This was not expected from our Naga people,” said Toy. The chief secretary said that the government has begun requisition of academic institutions to be used as quarantine facilities and asked the people to cooperate with the government. “The colonies are protesting because of panic reaction. Those returning are all our people. Such attitude is not acceptable and I am saying this as a Naga,” said Toy. Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t COVID-19 was going to stay for a quite some time people cannot run away from it. He said public have to be more reasonable and cooperate with the government to collectively fight

against the deadly virus. “We must form a positive attitude. It is disheartening that even before COVID has come to Nagaland we are already stigmatising it,” remarked Toy. Meanwhile, talking to PTI, Temjen Toy said it was Gods miracle that has kept Nagaland safe from COVID-19 pandemic till date. The other reason is the hard work of the health workers in dealing with the suspected cases, he said. Under the present circumstances and given the limited infrastructure, we have given our best and managed to prevent coronavirus, though there is a lot more to be done, especially in the health sector, Toy said. Our testing rate is quite low but with the lab being set up, our testing rate would go up and give us a clearer picture of the situation in the state, Toy said. The chief secretary said the biggest threat currently is the virus entering the state with the stranded people coming in from other parts of the country. (Cont’d on p-5)

Student bodies visit quarantine centre at Zhadima village

Angami Youth Organization (AYO) headed by its president Kekhrie Pfukha visited the quarantine centre at Zhadima village on Saturday and assessed the preparedness for COVID19. The team was also accompanied by officials from the Northern Angami Youth Organization (NAYO). During a brief interaction, Zhadima Village Youth and Sports Organization (ZVYSO) vice president, Kekhrieseilie Khoubve informed that the ZVYSO and Zhadima Students’ Union (ZSU) had put up a check gate at its entry point and has been maintaining records of vehicles crossing the village since March 26. With over 400 non local migrant labourers who are engaged in government developmental activities such as road constructions, telecom services, power services within the village jurisdiction, Khoubve highlighted that it has become a concern especially with the relaxations of the inter-state movements. In addition, ZVYSO

president Vizosielie Khoubve highlighted how the Bokajan-Niuland-Zhadima-Kohima route, which receives attention only during the monsoon season, has become an “escape route” for most illegal activities/businesses as it is very close to Assam. With the inter-state movement, he suggested the need to issue concrete regulations to control illegal activities along the route. AYO president Kekhrie Pfukha lauded the local community for its response towards fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and for maintaining a quarantine centre for stranded persons returning to the state. Reiterating its stand, Pfukha said that AYO “totally discourage” the government’s decision of to send returnees from green and orange zone for only three days of quarantine at the government designated facility. “Irrespective of the zone, the returnees must be quarantined for 14 days,” said Pfukha. He said that

the NGOs must support the government in its activities but at the same time point the loopholes for corrective measures that needs to be taken. He also urged for the need to sensitise the community about the threat and consequences of the virus by engaging, educating and empowering them. To protect the interest of the local community, he suggested that certain modifications of the government’s guidelines can be made at grassroot level to benefit and protect the interest of the community. Neibu Sechu, NAYO vice president suggested that the returnees must be carefully handled. He also encouraged the local bodies to sensitise the stranded people outside the state about the government’s assistance and coordinate with the COVID-19 task force in various cities. Giving dangerous space

I

t’s fifty two days since the nationwide lockdown was imposed in India and by May 17, when the third extension ends, it is most likely that it could be further extended till May 31 with lesser curbs or more relaxations. Much has been written and discussed about the lockdown and how it has brought about changes both within and beyond. Today many states want lockdown to continue but for a different reason because they rightly feel that it is the only best option to fight the spread of the dreaded coronavirus in the absence of vaccines. The people in general and most of them, want the lockdown to continue for other reasons besides being the only option to prevent spread of the virus. Today, people have begun to realise that the lockdown has brought a wholly different perspective of the need to preserve and conserve. The world has become more peaceful because everyone is locked up under the lockdown. The air has also become much cleaner since emissions from over one billion vehicles and around 40,000 airplanes around the world have been greatly reduced. This has brought a healing relief to those who used to suffer from asthma. Many cruel industries have been shut down, at least for the time being. It has also reduced noise pollution and ended the daily high-blood pressure causing noisy traffic jams. The lockdown has definitely impacted urban wildlife and many wild animals are enjoying a respite from human tyranny for the first time in their lives. Many Indian cities as well as those in other countries, have witnessed animals roaming freely and openly. All life on planet earth is benefiting from the decrease in pollution levels brought on by the shutdown of non-essential services. Satellite data showed a significant decline in nitrogen dioxide levels over China during Wuhan’s quarantine. Besides the health benefits due to lockdown, it has also brought many to realise the folly of their greed and expensive pursuits. Be it cars, household stuff, gadgets, toiletries or the array of expensive garments, shoes and other accessories, which have gone missing as lockdown has caused the suspension of the shopping mania. In short, people don’t find the need to rush madly to buy most things or items they actually don’t need. In general , people shop like crazy because they suffer from an addiction that is wasteful both in terms of time and money. It is not clear as to how long should the lockdown continue since even epidemiologists have said that the impact of the lockdown in slowing down infections would take more time because it continues to cause rise in infections. According to health experts and epidemiologists, the virus, SARS-CoV-2, which has properties that distinguishes itself from other coronaviruses and even influenza viruses, is highly transmittable and can evade the immune system for longer and therefore spreads quickly even without the infected being visibly sick. The virus is able to penetrate deeper into the lower airways. Therefore, to the elderly and the aged, those with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, it poses a heightened risk of acute pneumonia. Though business and industry desire greater relaxation of lockdown, health officials warn that this may lead to infected people travelling to new places and erupt into stage 3 or community spread.

DailyDevotion The Habit of Recognizing God’s Provision

…you may be partakers of the divine nature… —2 Peter 1:4 We are made “partakers of the divine nature,” receiving and sharing God’s own nature through His promises. Then we have to work that divine nature into our human nature by developing godly habits. The first habit to develop is the habit of recognizing God’s provision for us. We say, however, “Oh, I can’t afford it.” One of the worst lies is wrapped up in that statement. We talk as if our heavenly Father has cut us off without a penny! We think it is a sign of true humility to say at the end of the day, “Well, I just barely got by today, but it was a severe struggle.” And yet all of Almighty God is ours in the Lord Jesus! And He will reach to the last grain of sand and the remotest star to bless us if we will only obey Him. Does it really matter that our circumstances are difficult? Why shouldn’t they be! If we give way to self-pity and indulge in the luxury of misery, we remove God’s riches from our lives and hinder others from entering into His provision. No sin is worse than the sin of self-pity, because it removes God from the throne of our lives, replacing Him with our own self-interests. It causes us to open our mouths only to complain, and we simply become spiritual sponges— always absorbing, never giving, and never being satisfied. And there is nothing lovely or generous about our lives. Before God becomes satisfied with us, He will take everything of our so-called wealth, until we learn that He is our Source; as the psalmist said, “All my springs are in You” (Psalm 87:7). If the majesty, grace, and power of God are not being exhibited in us, God holds us responsible. “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you…may have an abundance…” (2 Corinthians 9:8)— then learn to lavish the grace of God on others, generously giving of yourself. Be marked and identified with God’s nature, and His blessing will flow through you all the time.

Politics of pandemic and politics of poverty A

dam Smith, a Scottish economist, father of economics and a moral theologian wrote a seminal book An Inquiry into the nature and Cause of Wealth of Nations (1776) continues to illumine light to students, scholars and particularly to those countries already having the know-how of wealth generation and wants to become richer and also to those countries that are poor and underdeveloped desirous to become rich and thus intends to garner wealth and become rich like other developed countries. He webbed economics and morality in human decision making. Two centuries later, Gunnar Myrdal, a Swedish economist wrote a sequel to Adam Smith’s work, three volumes entitled Asian Drama: An Inquiry into the Poverty of nations, in the year 1968 covering 10-year study of poverty in Asia, thought provoking and scintillating works. As Adam Smith and Gunnar Myrdal does approach wealth and poverty from their perspectives and analyzed the nature and causes of wealth and poverty that intrigue many even now as the poverty and wealth coexists for centuries. Politics of poverty continues to remain as a continuing

matrix amongst the rulers, emperors, dictators, totalitarians and politicians for long and presently it is visibly manifests. Poverty and wealth are human triggered categories, but given many dimensions. Wealth grows at geometrical levels due to exploitation and oppression, whereas poverty is bound to persist for centuries when majority of the populace are unable to meet the basic necessities of life—survival needs. This dynamic continues since the time immemorial that these two are inseparable and thus linked. C OV I D - 1 9 h a s brought together these two sides much closer and fused them into a single process. Coronavirus has brought the politics of nationalism to the fore and pitched nationalistic rhetoric and narrative much sharper and closer than before. For instance, in a press meet when a Chinese American reporter asked why do many die and get infected in the United States. President Trump answered that in all the countries people die. For a supplementary question Trump snubbed her to ask China for which she countered. Unable to respond such difficult questions President Trump abruptly left. COVID-19 pandemic

has changed the templates of politics to such levels that minimized the credo of “global humanity” and “common good of all and for all” and maximized slogans that confines to a particular sections within the national boundaries. Politics of the pandemic is not at all bothered and concerned about the lives that are lost and infected. It pushes aside the data rather reifying that it a referendum for their work— brushing aside hundreds and thousands of human lives lost and brandishing those by one far-right nationalist attributing as referendum. COVID-19 has been consolidating the politics of nationalism. It is so absurd and callous for some leaders to utter such utterances in times of peril and anxiety. Over and above, there has been absence of integration, common understanding, unified policies and strategies to combat coronavirus as it is indeed a global pandemic—ravaging all aspects of human existence. We live in a world of rising nationalism and widening inequality. The scenario we live is much worse than World War 11. As the times go by the global humanity is going to face horrific times.

It is estimated that there would be growing joblessness and unemployment leading to hunger and poverty. Billions of people around the world would perhaps be pushed to all sorts of troubles particularly those who are poor and vulnerable. Poverty has diverse dimensions and aspects such as abject poverty, relative poverty, income poverty, differential/representational poverty prevalent amongst the Latinos, Afro-Americans, Dalits, indigenous communities and racially segregated minority groups. The gains in the reduction of poverty and hunger during globalization have once again been ripped open by coronavir us. COVID-19 has widened the inequality and also increased the incidence of poverty and hunger on a global scale. Coronavirus has devoured and infected more belonging to the vulnerable and the poor category than the others. It is due to malnutrition, poor quality of life, unhygienic and cramped locales. Widening inequality, poverty and hunger are glaringly visible in the rich countries and developed economies more conspicuously in recent times wherein (rich North) accounts more people dead

and infected/affected than the poor South. The politics of poverty is being played by the politicians barring a few for decades and centuries. Politicians have been cashing on poverty and hunger to woo the poor electorates with lots of promises and sops. Poverty and hunger persist and manifests at appalling and naked forms in all the countries of the world. The world we live has two Americas, two Indias. Similarly there are countries within the countries inferring a world within a world. This scenario we see more glaringly during COVID-19, though they were present prior to coronavirus, but the virus has further escalated these divides more intensely, conspicuously and widely. Take for instance, the United States once called as “Life Abundant” now portrays 3.2 million applied for unemployment benefits. Jobless and homeless people would rise. Unemployment is likely to hit 50 percent of the work force. Politics of COVID-19 vividly portrays where the refugees, migrants and the vulnerable in New York live in the metro subway trains. During day times the empty carriages on the rail moving look like ghost trains and in nights

Homeless far beyond our comfort zone

W

ith the fall of pandemic human life have greatly been affected even to an extend of testing our spirituality in the midst of fear and hunger. Every Naga whether in or outside the state is greatly been affected one way or the other. For the Nagas in their home land the fear psychosis of being infected by those who were once considered as our own to the very tiny state of Nagaland which has a zero cases by the grace of God or as proved by the works of Man in a lap far beyond its capabilities because of lack of technical know-how in Within. For some less fortunate Nagas who don’t even own the basic right of free ration in their home land are surviving with the little act of kindness from those blessed ones and govt aid giving hope to humanity. We Nagas by blood lived in a social setup where we have overcome extreme poverty by being Humane to our less fortunate Nagas as to which we are much being blessed with as compare to the other state where ‘poverty make people do things which they never wished for’ even to the extreme of bagging and homeless. For this we must never forget our root of generosity to our fellow beings passed down to the Nagas by their forefathers with the coming of Christianity as from the very days of ‘Headhunting down to soul hunting Nagas paid the price of keeping their custom and traditional

intake with Faith’. It’s our Faith that will overcome all the fear and insecurity that’s yet to come and we must welcome our fellow Nagas with much compassion and positive vibes rather than be doubtful on the Government and their well planned Protocols for the strict quarantine and their obligations to not put the homelander life in danger by any act of negligence or favouritism. For those complex government reforms beyond boundaries the complexity pertaining to distribution of relief fund into set of norms or procedures which our fellow Nagas is finding hard to at least attend to their basic needs whereby some of them have been chased out by their landlords. They have no place rather than being homeless far beyond their homeland whereby, they can neither come back, as the government rescue approach needs time nor can they pay rent, because of financial inability and government complex norms and procedures in availing the benefit of 10k. As there are some less fortunate one who doesn’t even own a bank account or even have a smartphone rather than use their family or joint account for such transactions as none of us had the ability to foresee this kind of situation. I hope and wish from my comfort zone that our government either reform some norms and make it simple even for

the laymen to understand it and avail the benefits as the need of the hour is to keep all the Nagas safe irrespective of whether one declare to stay back or come back. Just a practical suggestion from a concerned citizen to GoN. There are Nagaland Houses in Every Metro State which could be used for accommodation to those who are less fortunate and chased out by their landlords or those who opted to stay back yet stuck in between those complex norms and failed to avail the onetime relief fund of 10K. Instead of wasting time and energy on incomplete verification of applicant it would be helpful if the government use those state housing for accommodation and the relief fund for maintenance till the situation get normal, which will also make easy for those generous individuals in or outside state and NGOs to provide helping aid straight to the place where it is needed the most as it will be better if every government utilised every facilities for the needy disposal by following the safety protocol and give hope to humanity. NOTE: The slogan of ‘Stay Home and Stay Safe’ has no meaning in practicality if our fellow Nagas are left helpless and homeless far beyond our comfort zone. Be Safe. Chenithung Odyuo

converted as sleepers offering shelter for those who are afraid of coronavirus. In order to protect their families many sleep in the suburban trains during nights. It is the AfroAmericans, about 90 per cent and others migrated to the West particularly to the United States and Britain and others European countries; Pakistanis and Bangladeshis come next approximately about 80 per cent; Indians 60 per cent are prone and susceptible to coronavirus. The migrants live in unsafe, congested and environmentally unhealthy locales—which mean an average of 13 cases per thousand residents presently reside and could be more in South Asian countries where their spaces both private and public are increasingly shrinking. This is again cumulative projections after long years of politics being played by the politicians in the name of poverty and hunger. Coronavirus has further ploughed into the fertile grounds of poverty where the poor and vulnerable live—such as the migrants, immigrants and the poor. A dialectic dynamic—politics of COVID-19 and politics of poverty compliments and thus co-exists. Dr. John Mohan Razu

To CM on handling pandemic in Nagaland Sir,

This letter is to draw your kind attention to the unfortunate decisions made to handle the situation during this pandemic Covid-19 in Nagaland. Some of which I am listing below: 1. Covid-19 testing facilities provided to the citizens of the state to be made compulsory especially for the stranded students returning to their respective home. 2. Maintain vigilant and proper quarantine centres by the govt for returned stranded students, in order to avoid community spreading. 3. All the frontline helpers must be given specific facilities since they are the life-line to control such unfortunate virus. Major efforts and preventive measures should be given to the frontline helpers. 4. Youths of the state are being accused and questioned for working outside the state by our own people is an irrational statement. Therefore, please look into this matter for goodwill of general people of the state. 5. The earlier financial assistance provided by the govt in order to ease the hardships faced by the people stranded outside the state is not benefitted by the beneficiaries as per my knowledge. 6. The decision taken by the government to prevent people coming from other stranded states to tackle with covid-19 is indeed a very good initiative but why not included other northeast state beside Sikkim and left out unregistered people. I, therefore on behalf of people living outside the state request you to kindly take necessary action on the issues highlighted above. Anticipating your appropriate response and action at the earliest. Imolemla Jamir imo.nungshi.jamir@gmail.com, Shillong

24 migrants killed in UP truck collision

AURAIYA/LUCKNOW (UP), MAY 16 (PTI/ IANS): At least 24 migrant workers were killed and 36 injured when a trailer rammed into a stationary truck, both carrying passengers, on a highway near Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Saturday. Some of the workers coming from Delhi had stopped for tea when the accident occurred between 3 am and 3.30 am on the Auraiya-Kanpur Dehat stretch of National Highway 19, police said. The impact of the collision, the latest in a series of road tragedies involving migrant workers returning to their villages, was so huge that both vehicles overturned Police officials put a body of a migrant in an ambulance who was killed after a trailer truck carrying labourers collided with a DCM van at Mihauli in Auraiya district, Saturday. Cyclonic storm heads for east India NEW DELHI, MAY 16 (PTI): A cyclonic storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal lay 1,220 km south-southwest of Digha in West Bengal on Saturday morning, and is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rain from May 19, the Met office said here. The system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday evening and move northnorthwestwards till May 17, Regional Met Director G K Das said. It is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards thereafter towards the West Bengal coast during May 18 to 20, he said. Wind speeds along and off the coastal areas of West Bengal will reach 45 to 55 kmph with gusts of 65 kmph from May 19 afternoon, and

will gradually increase to 75 to 85 kmph with gusts up to 90 kmph from May 20, the weatherman said. Separately, the National Crisis Management Committee Saturday reviewed the preparedness for the impending cyclone, which is likely to hit Odisha and West Bengal coast, and directed immediate assistance to the two states. A meeting of NCMC, headed by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, was held to take stock of the preparation for the impending cyclone over the Bay of Bengal, an official statement said. Gauba took stock of the current situation and preparedness for rescue and relief operations and directed that immediate assistance, as required, be provided, it said.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that the depression, which has developed over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm and cross Odisha and West Bengal coasts by May 20. The National Disaster Response Force, Armed Forces and the Indian Coast Guard have been put on alert and are coordinating with the state government authorities. (From p-1) The meeting also took note of several complaints raised by the village councils/ organisations etc with regard to setting up of quarantine centres in the government establishments as well as school and college hostels. In this regard, APC queered “How can anyone deny their own brothers/ sisters/ children who are in distress and willing to come home and be with their parents and loved ones?” APC expressed optimism that the church would keep their rest houses and infrastructure ready to be used as quarantined centres, if not for others, at least for their

own church members. Similarly, all the villages under Dimapur district have been advised to arrange quarantine centres for their own villagers as has been done in other Districts and states. With regard to circulation of fake news, particularly about the 20 people running away from quarantine centre at Agri Expo site, it was decided that, henceforth, the persons creating fake news and also the persons forwarding without authentication would be punished as per provision of law. The meeting also decided to include more members in some committee as the number of incoming people was increasing.

When asked about efficient utilisation of airspace, Singh said it would reduce travelling time in many sectors. “Since travelling time will be reduced, it will become more economical and fuel cost will come down and ticket cost will go down,” he told PTI. Currently, only around 60 per cent of the country’’s airspace is freely available and the government plans to ease the restrictions on utilisation of the airspace so that civilian flying becomes more efficient. Efficient airspace management for civilian flights could help in reducing flying costs to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore.

NEW DELHI, MAY 16 (IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that the financial package announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman should be re-worked and money should be put directly in the pockets of the people and the government should not worry about the ratings of the agencies. Gandhi was addressing his third press conference, this time for regional media. “Today our people need money. PM should reconsider this package. Modi ji should think about direct cash transfer, 200 working days under MNREGA, money for farmers etc. because all of them are the future of India,” Gandhi said.

Working with India on vaccine: Trump Washington, May 16 (PTI): The United States is working with India on developing a vaccine for COVID19, President Donald Trump said on Friday and recognised Indian-Americans as “great” scientists and researchers, who are contributing in the development of coronavirus vaccine. Addressing media, Trump said he is hopeful a COVID-19 vaccine would be available by the end of the year, and announced to appoint a former head of vaccines at GlaxoSmithKline to spearhead the effort as researchers around the world scramble to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus that has killed more than 300,000 people globally. “I just got back a short while ago from India recently and we are working very much with India and we have a tremendous Indian population in the US and many of the people that you are talking about are working on the vaccine too. ers,” he told reporters in the Rose Garden of the White House as he unveiled a massive effort to speed track the development of coronavirus vaccine before year end. “Yes. We are working very closely also with India,” Trump said responding to a question. He described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very good friend” of him. “India has been so great and as you know your Prime Minister has been a very good friend of mine,”

Trump said and later on Twitter announced to donate ventilators to India. “I am proud to announce that the United States will donate ventilators to our friends in India,” he tweeted. “We stand with India” and Prime Minister Modi during this pandemic, he said. “We’re also cooperating on vaccine development. Scientists discover new species of fungus on Twitter L o n d o n , M ay 1 6 (IANS): People often use social media platforms to keep themselves entertained but in a bizarre incident, scientists have discovered a new species of parasitic fungus on the micro-blogging platform Twitter. According to the study, published in the journal MycoKeys, the researchers spotted an image of a millipede while scrolling through the site and noticed a few tiny dots near the creature’s head – something that has never been seen on the American millipedes. The newly discovered parasitic fungus has now been given its official Latin name, Troglomyces twitteri. “I could see something looking like fungi on the surface of the millipede. Until then, these fungi had never been found on American milli-

pedes. So, I went to my colleague and showed him the image. That’s when we ran down to the museum’s collections and began digging”, said study Ana Sofia Reboleira from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. The research team discovered several specimens of the same fungus on a few of the American millipedes in the Natural History Museum’s enormous collection -- fungi that had never before been documented. This confirmed the existence of a previously unknown species of Laboulbeniales - an order of tiny, bizarre and largely unknown fungal parasites that attack insects and millipedes. The researchers point out that discovery is an example of how sharing information on social media can result in completely

unexpected results. “As far as we know, this is the first time that a new species has been discovered on Twitter. It highlights the importance of these platforms for sharing research - and thereby being able to achieve new results,” Reboleira said. “I hope that it will motivate professional and amateur researchers to share more data via social media. This is something that has been increasingly obvious during the coronavirus crisis, a time when so many are prevented from getting into the field or laboratories,” she added. Reboleira believes that social media is generally playing a larger and larger role in research and stresses that the result was possible because of her access to one of the world’s largest biological collections.

that the US is donating to India. This is for the first time probably that a president has recognized the scientific and research talent of the Indian American community. A large number of scientist are engaged in cutting edge research in various aspects of medical science including at the National Institute of Health, Universities, research institutes and bio pharma startups. There are an estimated four million Indian Americans in the United States, of which about 2.5 million are potential voters in the 2020 presidential elections this November. As a presidential candidate, Trump was the first nominee to hold a separate election rally for Indian American in October 2016 in New Jersey. Since then he has described himself as the best friend of India and Indian Americans at the White House.

Ghani defends new military policy

Kabul, May 16 (IANS): Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has defended his aggressive military strategy against insurgents, adding that his administration will never oppose efforts for peace and reconciliation but the armed forces had the right to defend the nation against threats. Referring to the recent spate of deadly attacks in Afghanistan, Ghani on Friday asked the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF) to give the “final response” to the perpetrators of the recent attacks so that they agree on a justified and equal peace, reports TOLO News reported. “Today, once again, there is a need for you (ANDSF) to demonstrate your hidden power and bring out your swords from the sheath,” Ghani said as he addressed members of the Afghan commandos. “Today it is the time that the enemies of Afghanistan see the power of the special operation

forces and commandos of Afghanistan,” warned the Afghan president. General Bismillah Waziri, the Afghan Chief of Army Staff, hailed Ghani’s decision to put the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces on offense mode, and for vowing to crush any insurgent response. “We are grateful to the decision made by the supreme commander of the armed forces and we will bravely act to suppress the enemies of Afghanistan,” said Wazirif. The Afghan government has blamed the Taliban for the recent attacks. “ O u r o b j e c t ive i s to create conditions for

peace,” said the President. “We are not moving away from peace. Our objective is to prove that the power of our commandos shows them the power of the sovereignty of the law,” added Ghani, indirectly warning the Taliban. An attack on a maternity hospital in the capital Kabul killed 24 civilians and injured 16 others on Tuesday, while a suicide bomb explosion targeting a funeral in eastern Nangarhar province killed 32 people and wounded 103 others. The Taliban said they were not behind the twin attacks. However, after the attacks, Ghani ordered national security forces to end active defence position and resume offensives on militant groups including the Taliban. The Taliban on Thursday claimed a truck bombing in Paktia province, which killed five civilians and injured 46 others, including several military personnel.

Shillong, May 16 : Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek on Saturday admitted that the State lacks quarantine centres and therefore has suggested home quarantine for returnees. “We have below 1000 (rooms), where will be accommodate all of them? We have our limitations,” he told reporters. Hek said that in view of shortages of rooms for institutional quarantining, the government has sought the help of the various dorbar shnongs (local administrative bodies) to let such returnees stay in schools and

community centres during the quarantine period. “The stranded citizens will be returning in thousands,” he added. The State government apart from its own institutions has also enlisted various hotels, guest houses and home stays as quarantine centres. “But still these do not add up,” Hek said. Bundesliga restarts amid pandemic Bala Devi is an inspiration: Patel Dortmund blank FC Schalke; RB Leipzig held by Freiburg

Players of Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke fight for the ball during their Bundesliga match on May 16.

B e r l o n, M ay 1 6 (Agencies): Erling Haaland’s phenomenal goalscoring form continued as Borussia Dortmund comprehensively defeated Schalke 4-0 in their first game since the Bundesliga was stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic. Haaland picked up

where he left off by scoring the league’s first goal, and his 13th in 12 appearances for Dortmund, following a two-month suspension in a Revierderby played out in an empty Signal Iduna Park. Raphael Guerreiro doubled the hosts lead just before the interval following an error from the out-of-

sorts Markus Schubert, and Thorgan Hazard beat the 21-year-old goalkeeper the 48th minute. Guerreiro got a second after a one-two with Haaland as Dortmund closed the gap on leaders Bayern Munich, who face Union Berlin on Sunday, to one point.

2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup hosts to be selected on June 25

Z u r i c h , M ay 1 6 (IANS): FIFA has announced that the selection of the host(s) for the 2023 Women’s World Cup will be made at its meeting to be held online on June 25. The FIFA Council meeting was scheduled to take place in early June in Addis Ababa. However, it has been postponed in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The four finalists to host the event include a joint bid from Australia and New Zealand, as well as bids from Brazil, Colombia and Japan. The 2023

edition of the tournament will be the first edition to feature 32 teams. “All eligible bids will be presented to the FIFA Council in order for it to select the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 host(s) within the scope of an open voting process, in which the result of each ballot and the related votes by the members of the FIFA Council will be made public,” the sport’s governing body said in a statement. Since the inception of the tournament in 1991, China and the United States have each hosted

the event twice. the other editions of the tournament have been hosted by Sweden, Germany, Canada and France. “FIFA remains committed to implementing the most comprehensive, objective and transparent bidding process in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This is part of our overall commitment to women’s football that, among other things, will see FIFA invest USD 1 billion in women’s football during the current cycle,” said FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura.

Giovanni Reyna was set to make his first senior start for BVB but sustained an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Hazard, with Jadon Sancho remaining among the substitutes, who sat spaced apart and wearing facing masks. After a high-tempo start Daniel Caligiuri was denied by Roman Burki – the keeper making his 200th appearance for Dortmund – before Haaland opened the scoring. Julian Brandt’s delicate flick released Hazard and his delightful cross in behind the defence was turned home first time by Haaland in the 29th minute, with his team-mates largely keeping their distance during the celebrations. Lucien Favre’s men doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, sweeping forward after collecting Schubert’s poor clearance and seeing Guerreiro drive Brandt’s pass across goal and into the bottom-right corner. Schalke sent Rabbi Matondo and Guido Bergstaller on at the break but they quickly fell further behind when Hazard finished a swift counter-attack by firing past Schubert, who should have done more to keep the effort out. The hosts moved completely out of sight when

Guerreiro stormed forward and slotted home after an exchange of passes with Haaland in the 63rd minute. Schalke took advantage of a rule change meaning up to five substitutions can be made but Dortmund had done enough to claim their 800th Bundesliga win in the 180th Revierderby. Dortmund travel to Wolfsburg next Saturday, while Schalke are in action at home to Augsburg the following day. Meanwhile, Bundesliga returned on Saturday, and so did VAR as title-chasing RB Leipzig battled to a 1-1 draw after SC Freiburg’s late strike was ruled out. After a 61-day hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, German football made its tentative return with five matches taking place on Saturday afternoon. Being played behind closed doors at the Red Bull Arena, it was Freiburg who led at half-time through Manuel Gulde’s fortunate first goal of the season. Leipzig pushed for an equaliser, and after a hatful of squandered chances, Yussuf Poulsen’s header pulled the hosts level with 13 minutes to go. Freiburg appeared to have the final say, but Robin Koch’s injury-time strike was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI): All India Football Federation president Praful Patel has asked the country’s women footballers to take inspiration from Bala Devi, who excelled at Scottish Premier League club Rangers. The national team striker from Manipur is currently on a professional contract with Rangers, the first Indian woman footballer to do so. During a virtual interaction with national team players across all age-groups, Patel told Bala Devi: “We are extremely proud of your achievements. You have shown the road ahead to the budding footballers, and have proved that our women footballers are in no way inferior to anyone. “I am sure you will make others – your colleagues, the U-17 women’s team girls dream too.” Bala Devi, who is currently in Glasgow said that the exposure stints with the national team made her confident as a player. “In 2018-19 we were constantly playing, or camping. It made me more confident of my abilities as a player, and made me believe in myself. We played against so many countries including matches in Europe,” she said. “Those matches helped me immensely to get myself the current club contract.” Bala Devi was referring to the senior team playing 25 friendly matches in 2018-19,

Bala Devi

something which was also highlighted by goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan. “On behalf of everyone in the team I need to thank you for all the exposure tours,” Aditi told the AIFF president. “The standard of football in our team has improved drastically. Results have followed and it has made us more confident, and helped us mature into better players.” Striker Dangmei Grace added: “The more we got to play the more we improved. The strong International calendar helped us a lot. It was exciting, and we look forward for such matches.”

Patel interacted at length with all the players on an individual basis to understand their mindset during the COVID-19 pandemic. Indian men’s team central defender Sandesh Jhingan maintained that everyone should “do their best to stay fit.” “We cannot control what is not in our hands. But we need to utilise the time to stay fit as and whenever everything opens up once again,” Jhingan expressed. “On my part, we have been provided schedules from the national coach (Igor Stimac) and professor (Luka Radman) and I am sticking to it.”

Spanish clubs Villarreal, Getafe deny match-fixing M a d r i d, M ay 1 6 (Agencies): Spanish soccer clubs Villarreal and Getafe have denied any wrongdoing after national media reported on Friday that police are investigating possible match-fixing in a 2-2 draw between the two clubs in La Liga last year. “Villarreal and its first team wish to show their absolute rejection of the accusations made today and categorically deny being involved in any way in fixing the game against Getafe on the final day of last season,” said a club statement. “As it has done on repeated occasions, the club condemns any conduct

that damages the essence of sport and competition and stresses that the values of transparency, ethics, integrity and fair play are fundamental to its philosophy.” Getafe also released a statement saying the club “wish to categorically deny any involvement with this matter and this type of conduct”. Newspaper El Pais reported that the match was being looked at as part of Operation Oikos, which was launched last year and led to 11 people being arrested on suspicion of forming a match-fixing group to profit from betting on games.

La Liga confirmed it had opened a confidential dossier as part of Operation Oikos but added that details of the case would not be made public until it goes to trial. The court based in the city of Huesca that El Pais said was investigating the case could not be reached for comment.

“Operation Oikos came about due to an accusation by La Liga, which has joined the case as a private plaintiff, and will take all legal measures necessary to clarify the facts that are under investigation,” La Liga said in a statement. Getafe had to beat Villarreal to stand a chance

of qualifying for Europe’s elite Champions League club competition ahead of Valencia. Villarreal had nothing to play for. Valencia’s 2-0 win at Real Valladolid on the same day, however, meant that in the event Getafe could not have qualified for the Champions League even if they had beaten Villarreal. Five former Osasuna directors and two former Real Betis players were given jail sentences last month following an investigation into match-fixing in 2013 and 2014, the first ever convictions for sporting corruption in Spanish football.

Chelsea’s Lampard keen to extend Willian, Giroud deals This is a totally different B’desh: Rohit L o nd o n, M ay 1 6 (Agencies): Frank Lampard says Chelsea are looking into extending Willian and Olivier Giroud’s contracts if the season restarts. The pair are the two most notable players whose contracts are set to expire on June 30. Chelsea’s last game was a 4-0 win over Everton on March 8 - a match where Giroud and Willian both scored. The Blues head coach told Sky Sports News he wants the same squad until the season ends if there is a successful restart. “It is still uncertain if and when play will get underway. We have big players [out of contract] so that’s something I’m obviously looking at very carefully,” he told Sky Sports. “The ones who are out of contract here have

Willian

Olivier Giroud

been great servants for the club, and actually have a lot of feeling for the club. Of course they’ll be concerned about themselves, in terms of how training is now is and if the pre-season is a rush they’re going to have to make sure they’re alright.” “So it’s going to have to be something we have to look at, hopefully we can make that arrangement can be made so they can stay with us. I would love the squad to look as it has all

season, but we’ll have to see how that works.” Premier League clubs will vote on Monday over whether a first phase of training can resume, which would see players maintaining social distancing guidelines in small groups, in accordance with government restrictions to control the coronavirus. Lampard has defended Premier League players over reservations they may have regarding a possible return

to training and demanded improved communication. “Everyone will handle those situations differently,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “ Pe o p l e l i k e Tr oy Deeney, you have to give the freedom to speak out, because people will be speaking from the heart. I think we have to upgrade that communication so players know what they’re going through, and then they can make those decisions.” Wi t h t h e P r e m i e r League having been suspended for more than two months, Lampard insists his squad are keen to return to action, but are also considering the health of their families. “My lads, I know - and I’m sure all managers will speak in the same way they’re good lads,” Lampard said. “Their intentions and

their feelings for their families are good. They want to get here and work. They can’t wait to get back and play football. I think the important part of my job at the moment is a lot of empathy with the players.” “You can’t just say, ‘lads, we’re going this way’, because this is a situation none of us have known. This is not a players’ strike, it’s not a player not wanting to train, or a player having an argument with another player, this is something that has affected everyone and their families.” Lampard was enjoying a successful first season in charge at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea on course for Champions League qualification as they sat fourth in the table with nine games remaining when the league was suspended.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): India’s limitedovers vice captain Rohit Sharma admitted that Bangladesh is the only place where the Indian team does not get too much support. The two neighbours have faced each other in bilateral series and ICC tournaments a number of times. “India and Bangladesh have passionate cricket fans, when we make mistakes, we are criticised from all corners, I know it is similar in Bangladesh, I know how passionate fans can get in Bangladesh, when we come to the ground to play the match, it is unbelievable. India is not used to playing without any sort of crowd support, Bangladesh is the only place where we do not get any support,” Rohit told Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal in an Instagram live

Rohit Sharma

video chat between the two. A number of opposition players and captains have noted how their teams often get booed in their own home grounds by expatriate Indian fans when they play India. However, that is rarely the case in Bangladesh, according to Rohit. Rohit also praised Tamim and the Bangladesh team for becoming a major force in cricket over

the years. “We get support wherever we go, Bangladesh is the only place where we do not get any support. I know Bangladesh fans really get behind you, this is a totally different Bangladesh side now, you have a sense of eagerness in your team now, everybody says that, we have seen with your performances during the 2019 World Cup as well,” he added.
