NEW DELHI/CHENNAI/PATNA, MAY 16 (IANS): The premises of two top opposition leaders, P. Chidambaram and Lalu Prasad, were on Tuesday raided by CBI and IT officials with Karti Chidambaram accused of getting pay-offs for helping a media company get FIPB clearance, while the former Bihar chief minister was accused of “benami” land deals -- actions the opposition denounced as vendetta by the BJP-led central government. The day began with raids by the CBI in New Delhi, Chennai, Gurugram and Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu, while the Income Tax raided 22 locations in Delhi and Gurugram on a number of premises said to be owned by Lalu and kin. The CBI raided the residence of Chidambaram and his son Karti in Nungambakam in Chennai, after registering an FIR on Monday night in which

it was alleged that his son could have benefited to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore for helping in the clearance of an FIPB proposal of media company INX Ltd when his father was at the helm in the North Block. The CBI FIR alleged that invoices for approximately Rs 3.5 crore were raised by the INX Ltd in favour of companies in which Karti was having “sustainable interests” either directly or indirectly. The FIPB clearance was given to Mumbai-based INX Media (now called 9X Media) when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukherjea, and Chidambaram was then the Finance Minister. Both Chidambaram and his son denied there was any misconduct on their part and said the whole action was aimed at “muzzling” the voice of Chidambaram senior, who has been writing against the NDA government. D I M A P U R , M ay 1 6 (NPN): A day after the Minister of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Imkong L Imchen, said that the state government should also be consulted in the ongoing political talks, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and in-charge of Nagaland, Dr. K Jayakumar, questioned why Imchen had to plead to include the state government when it was the right of the state government to be a participant in any such agreement. Addressing a press conference at Hotel Saramati here on Tuesday, Dr. Jayakumar questioned the integrity of the Framework Agreement signed between Government of India and NSCN (I-M) and said that Congress wants the contents of the agreement to

be made public. He said the Congress party welcomed the agreement, but would support it only after the contents were made known. He maintained that if Congress formed government in the coming assembly election, it would ask for the contents of the Framework Agreement to be made known to the state government. At the press conference, the AICC secretary also responded to the Nagaland BJP unit’s refutation to his claims over the rise in attacks on religious minorities like killings and burning of Churches in India. BJP unit had asked Dr. Jayakumar “to produce specific proofs of where and when it occurred.” In this regard, AICC secretary listed out 21 instances to justify his clam that BJP has been acting to fulfil their communal (More on p-9) agenda.

Another regional political party, PDP to be formally launched today Correspondent

K ohima , M ay 1 6 (NPN): It will be the second regional party to come up in 2017 when Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) will be formally launched at a function at Niathu Resort Dimapur on May 17, 2017. The other regional party that was launched and subsequently registered with the Election Commission of India is Nagaland Congress (NC), comprising of former veteran Congress members. Former Congress veteran and ex-Lok Sabha MP Chingwang Konyak who was appointed as Advisor by Neiphiu Rio as then chief minister, will head the new party. The PDP comprises of several former NPF ministers and parliamentary secretaries, most of who did not get a berth after the recent ministry reshuffle. It is also believed that the new party is likely to attract fence sitters. In one such development, OSD (Backward Areas) to CM and party general secretary P. Mulang resigned from the party and the post on the eve of the launch of the PDP. Besides the dissidents within NPF, the PDP will also see several senior retired

bureaucrats trying a stint by plunging into elective politics in the forthcoming 2018 assembly election. President –designate of the nascent PDP, Chingwang Konyak told this Correspondent that invitations have been extended to like minded people to the launch including those who have expressed desire to join the party. Dissidence within NPF marked Rio’s departure for national level politics since 2014 over who would succeed him. The January 2015 dissidence was the most serious as it led to Rio’s loyalists being sidelined, though few were rehabilitated as parliamentary secretaries or advisors. The violent incidents during January-February 2017 eventually cost T.R.Zeliang his chair but it was not Rio who benefitted despite wide expectations that he(Rio)would retain the chair. Rio’s suspension in 2016 for engineering the 2015 dissidence was not revoked while it was done so in the case with Imkong L. Imchen prior to being inducted as minister of forest and wildlife etc. In the recent reshuffle after current chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie took over,

several ministers and parliamentary secretaries were dropped from the ministry. It is believed that all of them will likely join the newly floated PDP in the coming weeks ahead of the state assembly election. As for the NPF, there are speculations that it is divided into three factions-A, B and C. While NPF (A) favour chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie, the other (B) is in favour of Advisor (finance) and former chief minister T.R. Zeliang and the third (C) are those sidelined. While all seven independent MLAs and parliamentary secretaries will be issued NPF tickets for the next election, the party faces an uphill task in trying to overcome anti-incumbency. Much will also unfold when Dr. Shürhozelie contests the by election due within August 2017 and the party looks ahead to the forthcoming assembly election. With divisions within NPF affecting regional votes, BJP hopes to do better under such circumstances. According to BJP sources, the party will continue to have alliance with regional parties under NEDA and that could even mean both NPF and PDP.

NNC marks 66th Naga Plebiscite anniversary Correspondent

K O H I M A , M AY 1 6 (NPN): Naga National Council (NNC) on Tuesday observed the 66th anniversary of Naga plebiscite at peace hall Chedema on Tuesday. NNC president Adinno Phizo in her address reminded that 66 years ago (on May 16, 1951) the Naga National Council (NNC) had joyfully gathered together in Kohima to give their thumb impression not to join the Indian union. She said “at the end of the national plebiscite, 99% of Nagas expressed their wish to be Independent and everything was done openly and the papers were all packed into boxes.” Adinno also recalled saying Nagaland, before 1954, was quite normal with no fear of anything. However, she said it was unfortunate that few groups of Nagas had been playing politics with the enemy.

Adinno Phizo (NP)

Those people should realize that Nagas are not demanding anything from India, she said, adding, the present situation was aggression by India and the solution would be the simple act of India withdrawing from Nagaland. “Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland is not Indian territory this is absolute and indisputable historical fact,” Adinno asserted. Highlighting the importance of holding the plebiscite, Phizo said it was necessary to dispel India’s doubt on Nagas that “only a few educated Nagas were

talking about independence”. The response in 1951 was an overwhelming verdict to show both India and the world that Naga stood of independence. Reacting to an article published in the local dailies about genocide in Nagaland, blaming a British missionary of having patronized Phizo to commit genocide, she said it was a mischievous article. She rather accused the Indian army of committing genocide in Nagaland. She said Nagas were matured people, which was why Nagas continue to uphold their rights. (Message on p-6) The programme was led by Kolezo Chase member CEC NNC, bible reading and prayer by Rev. Phomlee Van pastor Phom Baptist Church Kohima, special song was presented by Rengma Baptist Church Kohima. A documentary on Naga plebiscite was also screened after which the programme ended with a mass prayer. K Y M C

Tripura militant outfit regrouping: Police

Agartala, May 16 (IANS): Ahead of the assembly elections, the banned militant outfit National Liberation Front o f Tr i p u r a ( N L F T ) i s trying to regroup to create disturbances, a top state police official said here on Tuesday. The NLFT recently appointed Subir Debbarma as its President replacing Biswamohan Debbarma, who been made advisor, a top police official said quoting an intelligence report. The official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the NLFT, based in Chittagong H i l l Tr a c t s ( C H T ) o f

southeast Bangladesh, is trying to regroup themselves to create troubles before the next year’s assembly elections. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also confirmed the change of leadership in the NLFT and warned of its resurgence. “A section of political leaders belonging to opposition parties are trying to contact the new leader of NLFT to create violence ahead of the assembly elections. This clandestine plan is also to disture peace and on going development activities in the state,” said Sarkar, who also holds the Home portfolio.

“NLFT helped a tribal organisation to forcibly capture the politically important Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council in 2000 after creating terror,” he said. The police official said that NLFT’s new supremo Subir Debbarma alias Yamorok was a longstanding member of the outfit. Arrested during a counter insurgency operation in 2013, he got released on bail and went to Bangladesh before joining the terrorist group once again. The official said that despite change in leadership in NLFT, the banned outfit is unlikely to withdraw

its demand of sovereign Tripura. The border state has, since 2009, emerged as an island of peace in the otherwise violence-prone nor theaster n region of India. In 2015 and 2016, according to official and unofficial records no incident of militancy took place in Tripura while in a decade ago in 2005, 115 terror violent incidents took place claiming 130 lives while at least 65 civilians were abducted. In 1998, outlawed militant outfits gunned down at least 360 people and kidnapped 390 men in 340 terror incidents.

Remarkable improvement in NE’s security situation: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, May 16 (Agencies): Committed to unleash the true potential of the North East, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said there has been significant improvement in the security situation of North East over the past years. Addressing a meeting, Singh said there is a remarkable improvement in the security situation of the North East, adding that most of the areas in the North East are now free from militancy. He also said that the Centre has taken several initiatives to expedite the peace and development process in the North Eastern region. Singh said North East India is quite rich in terms of human and natural resources and to properly exploit this potential of this, it is necessary to create a safe and peaceful environment in this area. “There has been significant improvement in the security situation of North

East over the past years. Much of this area has been exempted from militancy and in some of the remaining pockets, militancy is losing its support rapidly. Effective counter insurgency, responsive development and better relations with the neighbouring countries have improved significantly in the situation. However, in some areas the Armed Gangs under the guise of militancy engages in activities like extortion, kidnapping and abduction,” Singh said. He said initiatives by the government are taken for the development for fast-track development of road, rail, air, power and digital infrastructure and the promotion of local human resources is expected to provide better results in other areas along with better security conditions. “From our Act East Policy, the doors of this region will open for SouthEast Asian markets,” he added. Advising the Di-

rector General of Polices (DGP) of all the states that the traders and their holders of illegal arms run against organized campaign, Singh said the long-standing militancy in this area vitiate the security eco-system. “With the improvement in the safety scenario, the police should approach their normal police function, such as prevention and detection of crimes, which has been suffering much from the last decade. Unfortunately, in certain states of North-East, criminal prosecution of criminal cases and conviction ratio is quite poor. In one state, the ratio of prosecution is only five percent compared to all India average 86 percent,” he added. The Union Home Minister said although a large area of northeast has been liberated from militancy, the number of crimes due to the presence of illegal arms in such a large amount is also high. He said radicalisation

is a trans-national phenomenon. “If it is not stopped it can be converted into terrorism, adding that there is a need to closely monitor their activities and take pre-emptive action wherever necessary,” he added. “If one talks about future security threats then the problem of radicalisation has emerged as a major challenge. Radicalisation is a trans-national phenomenon. If it is not stopped it can be converted into terrorism. The sensitivity of North East and its adjoining areas makes this area more vulnerable to such cases. Therefore it is necessary to identify agents of radicalisation. Some of their agents are operating under the guise of religion. While some people are operating on the basis of NGOs and individual, socio cultural and educational development, hence it is also necessary that the flow and utilization of their foreign funds will be closely monitored,” he added.

Asserting that state flower Shirui Lily and state bird Nongin have become endangered, Singh said that his government would take all necessary steps to protect them at any cost. The chief minister announced that from next year, the festival would be celebrated at a grand manner by inviting foreign dignitaries and tourists. He further asserted the festival would help in strengthening the brotherhood bond between the hills and valley people. Meiteis in the valley have always been searching for ways to cement the old

age bond of love among the brethrens and Shirui festival has brought the valley people closer to the Tangkhul community, he said. “This is an encouraging development towards harmonic coexistence among the ethnic communities of the state,” Singh added. State forest and environment minister Th Shyamkumar said that the festival would remind the old age tradition of love and co-existence among the communities of the state. The five-day long festival would feature demonstrations of the age-old traditions and culture of the inhabitants of Ukhrul district.

DailyDevotion A Prayer for When You Fear Death “The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?” – Psalm 27:1 Have you ever been stung by a bee? It’s not a fun experience. But though it’s painful for the person being stung, it’s fatal for the bee. When a honeybee stings a person, it can’t pull its little barbed stinger back out. This is a one-time experience for them. They had better think carefully about who they are going to sting, because once they do it, they are not going to survive. When a bee stings you, not only is the bee’s stinger left in you but also part of its abdomen and digestive tract, as well as nerves and muscles. This massive abdominal rupture kills the bee shortly after it stings. That is what happened when Jesus died on the cross. In his enduring hatred for God’s Son, Satan thought it would be a great idea to have Jesus betrayed, arrested, beaten within an inch of His life, and then crucified d put to death on a Roman cross. The devil said, “This is my moment. I am going to sting Him. I will have a role in His death. When He dies, that is the end of Him.” Everything went according to Satan’s plan, and like a bee, he flew off thinking he had succeeded. But everything went according to God’s plan as well, and the sting of death was its own defeat. As 1 Corinthians 15:54–55 says, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” Where is the sting of death for the believer? It is ripped out, because at the cross, Jesus took the stinger out of death. This is a great truth. As Christians, we no longer need to fear death because our souls will live on forever with Christ.

Quotes I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

Post-mortem

Vol. XXVII NO. 160 Dimapur, wednesday, May 17, 2017

oans that have remained unpaid by big business houses have accrued to a colossal amount of around Rs.6.46 lakh crore as on December 31,2016 due to the manner in which public sector banks give in to political pressures. Managers of government owned banks know that if loans given to businessmen close to politicians go bad, the government will ultimately pick up the tab by recapitalising the public sector bank to an adequate extent. Hence, they go easy on giving loans to borrowers who are likely to default. Of course, there is always the threat of transfers, which works very well. This has happened for years at end. In this manner, toxic loans of public sector banks (PSBs) rose by over Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 6.06 lakh crore during December of 2016April 2017, the bulk of which came from power, steel, road infrastructure and textile sectors. For the private sector banks, the same number stood at Rs 86,124 crore. Of this, two banks, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank, accounted for bad loans of Rs 58,184 crore. Of course, given that public sector banks give out more loans, it is not surprising that their bad loans are more. The total loans of public sector banks are 2.9 times the total loans of private sector banks. But their bad loans are 7.5 times that of private banks. If both these set of banks were equally well run, then the two ratios just referred to, wouldn’t have been different. Between 2013-2014 and 2015-2016, the total net profit made by the public sector banks stood at Rs 56,567 crore and that of private banks stood at Rs 1,13,801 crore. This, even though public sector banks are significantly bigger than India’s private banks. These data points tell us that India’s public sector banks are inefficiently run. This inefficiency has cost the government a lot of money over the years. Between 2009 and March 2017, the government has had to invest close to Rs 1.5 lakh crore in these banks to keep recapitalising their capital, in order to keep them going. Indeed, this is a lot of money and could have gone towards other worthy causes. The basic problem with public sector banks is political meddling. Every government has its favourite set of industrialists and this ultimately leads to the public sector banks and in the process the taxpayer, picking up the bill for this politician-businessman nexus. Having said that, in an ocean of corporate defaulters and bad loans of banks, Mallya is a very small fish. A newsreport on Moneycontrol points out that Mallya owes banks and the service tax department around Rs 9,000 crore. This includes the principal loan amount, interest on the loans as well as penalties. Now compare this to the total gross nonperforming assets(NPAs) or bad loans of Indian banks. These are loans which borrowers have defaulted on and stopped their repayment. As of December 31, 2016, the gross NPAs of banks stood at Rs 7,23,323 crore. The gross NPAs of public sector banks, to whom Mallya mainly owes money, stood at Rs 6,46,199 crore. The other giant defaulters owe banks more than Mallya but they have immense political clout and that makes Mallya baiting a red herring.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur

I

Imchen’s opinion on the Enough of beating around the bush ongoing political talks E

was born and brought up from my village Mangmetong in Mokokchung district. From primar y schooling to the Post Graduation, I have never been in any standard school and therefore my language and my culture are purely country made and unpolished. This is one of the reasons that I have cultivated/attracted unmatched political and social enemies within and without the Naga society. Moreover, at times I am stupidly frank about my opinion on any given issues and therefore naturally my opponents used to outnumber my political comrades. However I try to be personally polished, I know I become more troublesome for myself than anybody else. Anyway I have no ill will towards anybody and always stand for correction from my esteemed friends. I have issued a statement on 6th August 2015 in support of the Framework Agreement signed between the NSCN (IM) and Government of India (GoI) in the presence of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh in Delhi on 3rd August 2015. I still hold the same opinion about the Framework Agreement till today. During the last almost 2 (two) years so many organisations and concerned Naga citizens have expressed their opinions

regarding this Framework Agreement. Such expressions through their columns must have contributed to both the negotiating parties for which they all deserve salutations. Since specially the Nagas consider this Framework Agreement very important for their destiny it is quite natural to express apprehension as well as considered opinion so as to make the agreement to a commonly acceptable one. Today also I am tendering few of my unpolished opinion in the public domain so as to provoke the situation for good. (i) Firstly, there is enormous trust deficit between the negotiating parties and the Naga general public, including political parties in the State. I feel that this trust deficit should be bridged comfortably at the earliest. (ii) There are at least 7 (seven) Naga underground factions, who are outside the purview of the ongoing political talks. Why the negotiating parties (GoI and NSCN-IM) should not sincerely approach them with open mind is difficult to discern. At the same time this 7 (seven) Naga underground factions are also not coming to a single platform presenting a comprehensive and common agenda for the cause of the Naga Political Issue and its solution therein. (iii) I do not understand

as to why the Government of Nagaland should not be taken into confidence by the negotiating parties, which is truly peoples’ mandated government and therefore cannot be simply wished away. (iv) There are recognised political parties in the State besides the government who may also have wisdom laden ideas and proposals to contribute in the political talks. (v) I have no hesitation to appreciate the sincerity and commitment to the negotiating parties. Having said that, the Naga in general should also come out with open mind and contribute their views and ideas instead of developing negative attitude. The Nagas cannot afford to lose the present opportunity in shaping the destiny of their future. I am also appealing to the negotiating parties to exhibit the art of benevolent diplomacy and statesmanship devoid of arrogance. This is the time to demonstrate the good quality leadership while ironing out its obstacles and difficulties. I am putting this personal opinion in the public domain in my individual capacity, representing myself as a concerned Naga citizen and hope that it will not injure anybody whatsoever. Imkong L. here is only one Govt. Higher Secondary School in Dimapur City presently. The population of the city is increasing in every year and the members of the students are highly increasing by leaps and bounds. Hence the Dimapur city needs more Govt. Higher Secondary School under privileged Naga students. Presently, the Principal and the Staff of the only Government Higher Secondary School at Half Nagarjan Dimapur are facing acute problems in admitting the students who has just passed out the HSLC Exam. It is well known fact that 70-80% of vast majority of our Naga people are living on daily bread. The parents are trying to give the best education to their children. But it very painful to see the parent not being able to send their children to Private Higher Secondary School, due to the

bad shape of their economy status. Because of this reasons many parents are trying to get their children admitted to Govt. Higher Secondary School. It has been thoroughly observed that the Govt. Higher Secondary School at Half Nagarjan Dimapur. The Principal and the school authority is totally helpless in admitting the students due to lack of infrastructure and other facilities in the schoo. As a responsible citizen I, K. Ahovi Sema. G.B. Padumpukhuri Dimapur sincerely appeal to Honourable Minister Education Nagaland and concerned MLAs from Dimapur to see the problem and upgrade at least 3 (Three) Govt. High School to Govt. Higher Secondary School, So that the pains and suffering of the people of Dimapur City can be healed. K. Ahovi Sema GB, Padumpukhuri Village, Dimapur

ver since the diabolical Framework Agreement was signed on August 3, 2015, between the Government of India and the NSCNIM. It has caused quite a stir among the Naga intelligentsia. Except for the few proponents of the NSCN-IM, the majority of the Nagas have expressed their displeasure to subscribing something that they do not know. No one knows what the Framework Agreement is all about or what the contents of the Framework Agreement are. Yet, it is hilarious to note that some NSCN-IM functionaries and their henchmen are all out praising the collective leadership of the NSCN-IM and the Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi for coming to a conclusion to this age old Indo-Naga issue. One may well assume whether it is sheer stupidity or the belief that they will be endowed with some greater responsibilities post solution that prompted the nincompoops to support something that they are not even aware of! Only time will tell and it will be left for the public to decide whether the solution will be honorable or not. No doubt, the Naga issue is unique and complex in the whole of South and South East Asia. However, how can anyone in their sanity blindly endorse something that they do not know what good it will bring forth? Every Naga aspires to live under one roof without any external interference and do away with tribalism because the very fabric that entwined the Nagas has been fragmented by tribalism and this is the root cause for most of the problems in our State. And while we are being confronted with so many problems, the NSCN-IM has added another woe to our already burdened state by claiming to be the sole representative of the Nagas. The NSCN-IM have been bragging about that the signing of the Framework Agreement will bring forth an honorable and amicable solution. That without territorial integration

Naga Plebiscite Day speech of NNC president Adinno Phizo Ladies and Gentlemen, Every year has been a precious year for the Nagas. Sixty-six years ago, on this same day of May 16, 1951 the Naga National Council (NNC) joyfully gathered together in Kohima to give their thumb impression not to join the Indian Union. At the end of the national plebiscite, 99.9 percent of Nagas expressed their wish to be independent. Everything was done openly and the papers were all packed into boxes. Before 1954 Nagaland was quite normal with no fear of anything. Why the plebiscite was necessary was to show India’s doubt on the Nagas that a few educated Nagas were talking about independence’. The result was an overwhelming verdict to show both India and the world the Naga stand of independence. Many people are no longer with us who took part in the plebiscite but we will always remember our

people who saved our country. At present, our country is in a chaotic situation because of India’s armed occupation of our country. Unfortunately a few group of Nagas have been playing politics with the enemy. These people should know that Nagas are not demanding anything from India. The present situation is aggression by India and the solution would be the simple act of India withdrawing from Nagaland. Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland is not Indian Territory. This is the absolute and indisputable historical fact. For the first time in this long conflict with India, one Indian mentioned of “genocide” in Nagaland in a recent article published in the local newspapers. But at the same time he blamed a British missionary of having patronized Mr. Phizo and pushing Nagaland into genocide!. This is a mischievous article, but he admitted “genocide’ committed

Suggestions to check the menace of traffic jam

n a place like Kohima and Dimapur, where urbanisation is at its peak, with business establishment and expansion of buildings everywhere, the increase of workers in every household, draining of education and population from rural to urban sector, accumulation of wealth with a better livelihood prompting highly in the acquisition of a four wheeler cars in our society through service loan or car loan etc. Some go on purchasing as a sign of prestige and for someone as a utility. It’s a need not a want and to strike out from our household chores is inevitable and it’s like letting our precious treasure go out from our hands. It’s not only difficult, but impossible to avoid having being with the culture of driving four wheeler cars. To opt for either two wheeler or four wheeler cars is a loggerhead situation. But to choose wisely, opting for a two wheeler vehicle is

the most urgent need of our time to control traffic menace in our city. To check the menace of traffic jam in our city is, of course the need to construct a gigantic flyover bridge but that will be a mere dream and nightmare to come into reality, but for instance at least expansion of bigger road system is necessary and possible by giving proper compensation to the landowners whose lands can be affected. Underground parking system of a big infrastructure construction in every 3 KM distance should be maintained. I think this work and initiatives comes under the purview of Municipal Affairs Department. It is also my ardent request to the landowners, whose building is under construction on the opposite side of city streets to allot parking slot in their ground floor buildings which could accommodate at least 4 to 6 vehicles at

they will not accept any sort of solution. But the very Indian leaders who have been instrumental in the signing of this agreement have stated candidly in the recently held Manipur elections that integration of Naga inhabited areasfrom other states is not part of the agreement. Now that leaves us to deduce either theflamboyant claims made by the NSCN-IM or the claims of the Indian leaders. As such, the pertinent question that triggers each and every Nagas of Nagaland is: 1. Whether the FA encompasses the Naga inhabited areas of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh or it is applicable only to the present state of Nagaland? 2. If the FA is applicable only to the State of Nagaland then why is it being negotiated by outsiders on our behalf ? Did anyone entrust them to do so? 3. Does it imply that the provisions of the agreement will be enjoyed by the Nagas from other states as well without territorial integration? If the claims made by the NSCNIM is legit then every Naga will wholeheartedly support this cause because the feeling of Nationalism still runs high in the blood of very Nagas unlike most of the NPGs who care only about their materialistic desires. But the truth has been kept in total darkness and the people have been forced to believe in some utopian ideas. The NSCN-IM has for too long been openly professing that they are the guardian of the Nagas and this has to stop immediately. They should know that they do not have the mandate of the people nor are they the sole representative of the Nagas. Any solution arrived at should be inclusive and the public be made known about the talks or else it will only exacerbate the already deteriorating Nagaland. May God be our guide. X Chophika Sumi, Dimapur

a time. This could reduce traffic jam. A city like Kohima and Dimapur is rapidly expanding with manoeuvring infrastructure and we can see the changes by increasing cars on the streets. Moreover, the road system is not well organised unlike the rest of the country. Our road is very congested with no proper parking slot and the lack of footpaths adjacent to the road is the ultimate effects of the pedestrians strolling freely on the road which is meant for vehicular movement and finally it affects free flow of vehicles on the streets, thus leading to high voltage drama of traffic jam in our city. Many times the road is stranded and stagnated losing all our hopes that we had planned early in the morning. The consequence of this kind of traffic jam is losing of our capital hugely spending on fuel consumption. Proper town planning is on urgent need with a special

provision to move cars freely on the streets. Every jalopy cars should be cross check in our city time to time in order to control fuel emission that causes hazard to our health and environment. Except in the case of VIP’s, a common man like me should opt for driving ‘two wheeler’ in order to reduce traffic jam. Whether rich or poor, whether Class 1 gazetted officers or fourth grade employees, the incumbent should make adaptable to the use of two wheeler vehicles. Utterly renovation scheme be implemented and a cohesive team should be installed in our city to check the menace of traffic jam. To sum up; healthy life- healthy driving is important and it is advisable to go for ‘two wheeler culture’ (generally bikes and bicycles) in order to save our time, life span, energy, fuel and money. by the Indian army in Nagaland. The problem with India is that they see the Nagas as uncivilized. But Nagas are a matured people and that is why we continue to uphold our rights whatever the circumstances we face in these troubled times. The Naga people have given their best to save Nagaland. In the course of the conflict, many suffered and died in the hands of the cruel Indian armed forces. But miraculously, God has saved our small nation from a big nation like India. Even the enemy had sometimes wondered whether the Naga army of the FGN used `black magic’. We are grateful to God for all the blessings He has supplied to the Naga people even in the worst of times. May God bless Nagaland. Urra Uvie. Peace Hall, Chedema, May 16, 2017. Adinno Phizo president, Naga National Council

This is to bring to the kind notice to the concerned authority that Naltoqa Suruhuto in Zunheboto district was established in the year 1989. 8th NAP Bn HQs is situated in this area. At present, there are 310 houses. As per the census in 2011, the population of this place was 2020. There are three private High Schools and one Government Middle School are functioning to cater to the needs of the surrounding villages. Moreover, office of the dobashi has been established for smooth functioning of administration. However Naltoqa has not been recognised and so it does not get any facilities from the government. Applications were put up to the government to establish EAC Office in Naltoqa. But it was told that the file was lying on the table of the cabinet. Even after a decade no positive response from the government and the public of Naltoqa has been suffering and facing lot of problem since 27 years. Hence, it is an earnest supplication from the public of Naltoqa to the government to establish EAC Office for all round development of this area. SC concerned over Watsapp, FB collecting personal data

NEW DELHI, MAY 16 (AGENCIES): Concerned over social networking platforms like WhatsApp collecting data of their users and using it for commercial purposes, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that there was need to put in place a mechanism for data protection and agreed to examine a plea for framing guidelines. Although the Centre contended that it was in “process” for framing a law on data protection, a five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said that court must protect fundamental rights of citizens which were allegedly being violated by WhatsApp by sharing information of its 160 million users in the country with Facebook. It agreed that WhatsApp was of “great advantages” for users for sharing information and knowledge but said that people’s fundamental right was also very important which must be protected. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that the Centre was committeed to protect the rights of citizens and the government would

Dipak Misra soon frame a law to protect vital personal details people hand over while opening bank accounts, joining social media platforms and using various apps. The bench, also comprising Justices A K Sikri, Amitava Roy, A M Khanwilkar and M M Shantanagoudar, questioned WhatsApp on why it was sharing information of its users in India when it had been restrained from doing so in other countries. “You must maintain a global standard. We can protect rights of citizens and it is our constitutional duty. We are not concerned about your business interest and our concern is rights of citizens. We do not think that anyone(user) would want to share data,” the bench said. Senior advocate K K Venugopal and

Siddharth Luthra, appearing for WhatsApp and Facebook, told the bench that all messages, videos and pictures shared through their platform were fully protected and they agreed to make a statement on oath that the companies did not share data. They said that PIL filed by two students against privacy policy of WhatsApp was not maintainable. “I am ready to file affidavit to make it clear that not a single message of users has been read. The company cannot do so even it wants to do. I am not a state or government body but a private company and users do not have fundamental rights against me. It comes within the realm of contract between me and the users and they should approach civil court for their grievances. The petition against me is not maintainable,” Venugopal told the bench. The court, however, said that it was not only about individual right but collective rights of people was involved and it would examine whether PIL could be filed against private company for violation of fundamental rights.

national 7 Govt launches Pak shelling dislocates BROTHERHOOD HOSTEL HIGH SCHOOL JUNCTION, KOHIMA ‘Operation Clean 1,700 from LoC areas Features: Money’ website J A M M U , M A Y 1 6 ated from LoC hamlets  No Admission Fee NEW DELHI, MAY 16 (Agencies): The government on Tuesday added a new dimension to its fight against black money in the country as it launched a website ‘ Operation Clean Money ‘. “The new website will help honest tax payers,” Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said inaugurating the website. Jaitley warned those dealing in black money and said “It is no longer safe to deal with excessive cash, tax-evaded money.” The finance minister said the fallout of the November 8 decision to demonetise higher denomination currency has increased movement towards digitisation, number of assessees going up and tax revenue jumping as also fear of dealing in cash being installed. Stating that as many as 91 lakh persons have come under the tax net, Jaitley said he expects further increase in tax returns going ahead. Post demonetisation, there has been a hike in collection of personal income tax, the finance minister said, adding that the new portal will help honest tax payer.

(AGENCIES): Around 1700 people have been dislocated from the areas close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district because of shelling by the Pakistani Army which continued through the last night, a senior official said on Tuesday. The Pakistani Army pounded hamlets besides the Indian Army posts in Nowshera and Manjakote sectors of Rajouri last night, Rajouri Deputy Commissioner Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said. “Shelling (by the Pakistani Army) started in Ans Bhandhaar areas of Nowshera in Rajouri at 22.55pmon Tuesday. Lam and Kalsian areas were also affected,” he said. The guns fell silent since this morning, they said. Earlier during the day yesterday, the Pakistani troops resorted to firing and shelling in the Nowshera sector since 4pm, the Deputy Commissioner said. Choudhary said that four villages in Nowshera have borne the brunt of small arms fire from across the LOC. Nearly 1700 people have already been evacu-

hit by shelling by Pakistan and shifted to relief camps, he said. Around 120 officers from various departments have been deployed to organise facilities at relief camps. “Inter-departmental teams deputed by the district administration for damage assessment reported small arms firing from 4pm yesterday in Sarya village followed by firing in Khamba, Anwas and Bhandar villages,” he added. The DC said the damage assessment teams were withdrawn at 5.30pm in view of the intermittent firing by Pakistan. On May 14, the Pakistani Army had fired indiscriminately using small arms, 82mm and 120mm mortars in Nowshera and Manjakote sectors of Rajouri. On May 13, authorities ordered closure of fiftyone schools in Nowshera sector and also Manjakote and Doongi zones. The district administration has provided immediate relief of Rs 1 lakh each to the next of kin of the six people who have died in the Pakistani shelling and given financial assistance to the injured, Choudhary said.

Mumbai, May 16 (PTI): Markets soared to record-smashing heights for the second straight session today as investors remained enthused by the early onset of monsoon amid quarterly earnings cheer. Benchmark Sensex finished at a fresh lifetime high of 30,582 while the broader Nifty closed above the 9,500-mark for the first time. Both indices had hit record highs in yesterday’s trade as well. Earlier this week, the weather office said Southwest monsoon has covered the Nicobar Islands and the entire south Andaman Sea, three days ahead of its normal onset date. Encouraging quarterly earnings and upbeat global cues further fuelled the momentum, brokers said. The 30-share Sensex opened on a strong footing and zoomed to a new

NEW DELHI, May 16 (PTI): The Indian economy is entering a “productive growth phase” and real GDP growth is likely to rise to 7.9% by December driven by favourable external demand, improving corporate balance sheets and private capex recovery, says a report. Productive g rowth phase is characterised as a period of improving growth while macro stability remains in check and typically sets the stage for a sustained growth cycle. According to the research note by Morgan Stanley, growth is likely to inflect higher, accelerating by almost 1% point over the next three quarters. Morgan Stanley expects growth to pick up from the second quarter of this year onwards and accelerate by almost a full percentage point to 7.9% by December 2017 from the current run rate of 7%.

Muslim board equates triple talaq with Lord Rama’s birthplace

Kapil Sibal issue of triple talaq was a matter of personal law, protected under the Constitution. He referred to holy ‘Quran’, ‘hadith’ and interpretations attributed to companions of Prophet Muhammad and scholars on divorce to drive home the point that the issue of triple talaq was a matter of faith and hence beyond judicial scrutiny. The Muslim body said despite the existence of laws on dowry prohibition and guardianship, Hindu customs were being allowed to remain like dowry is prohibited but gifts are allowed. “When it comes to Hindu law, you protect all customs but when it comes to Muslim, you start raising questions over customs. Like when it comes to Dow-

ry prohibition Act or Guardianship Act you follow customs and protect them,”he said. The bench asked Sibal as to what extent of Muslim Personal Law was part of the religion. “Some part of Personal Law may be part of religion but some part may not be. There are different schools of thought for Shias and Sunnis. The foremost thing is the essence of Quran which is the principal thing,” he said. Sibal said that ceremonies related to birth, marriage, divorce, properties and death are decided by family influenced by social norms, which cannot be tested on the ground of constitutional morality. The senior advocate also said the practice of triple talaq started in 637 AD after the death of Prophet Muhammad in 632 AD by his companions. He said no legislation can take the place of a custom, being practised over 1400 years, and it cannot be termed un- Islamic. “The essence of Islam is that divorce happens after the marriage. If Nikahnama is the heart of it, why can’t divorce be part of it. You cannot change my ‘nikah-

nama’ by some kind of statute. It’s totally unacceptable,” he said. He said personal laws cannot be tested on the touchstones of fundamental rights under Article 13, 14 (right to equality), 15 (prohibition of discrimination) and 21 (right to life) and no one can come to the court saying that this practice is discriminatory and so strike it down. “Personal laws cannot be tested on the ground of being discriminatory. The argument that the triple talaq is discriminatory does not hold good,” he said. Sibal termed as “unacceptable” the submissions of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi that if triple talaq is struck down then Centre will bring a law to regulate marriage and divorce among Muslims. To this, the bench, in a lighter vein, said, “We have been asking him (AG) to pass the law, so that we do not have to go into this. Now you should go and tell him”. “If triple talaq is struck down and Parliament refuses to pass a law, then what will happen. Will there be now law for marriage and divorce of Muslim men and women,” Sibal asked.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Tuesday slammed the civic agencies, saying none of them have made effort to plan a scientific solution to prevent outbreak of vector-borne disease such as chikungunya and dengue this monsoon. “The municipal corporation does not even have a geographical map of where mosquito-borne diseases happened last year and where to fumigate. You are not even aware where the diseases are happening,” said a division bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar. The bench directed the municipal corporations to file a report on geographical mapping of areas which were affected by vector-borne diseases and said the report must also give details of the preventive and curative steps as per the mapping result. It also sought to know if any prosecution were launched against persons whose houses were found to be breeding mosquito sites last year. “Whole of Delhi has to suffer again. Where is the geographical mapping? Where did it (dengue/chikungunya) happen last year? What have you done to ensure it does not happen this year?” asked the bench.

Cong’s dig at Imchen, BJP (Form p-1) He said BJP has inserted its hands in a beehive without realising the consequences. Further, Jayakumar slammed what he described “communal agenda of BJP and its 20 allied organisations” that continued their atrocities on Christians and other minority communities throughout the country. Stating that minorities were being victimized across the country, AICC secretary said at the hands of BJP backed agencies like RSS, VHP etc minorities were facing oppression. He said that BJP did not want ‘sabh ka sath, sabh ka vikas’ but instead the development of only Hindutva. With regard to cow vigilantes and Romeo Squad active in UP and others places, the Congress leader asked what law led to the creation of those gangs of scoundrels that were harassing innocent people. He also questioned the silence of prime minister Modi and asked if he would allow others to form such gangs and harass RSS people?” AICC secretary said BJP government has been a failure and was taking credit of works done by UPA government.

With regard to the celebration BJP was planning to organise on May 26, he said that BJP was only going to celebrate the failure of the government. He said BJP has failed people everywhere and has been unable to provide jobs or even “Rs 5 in the accounts of the poor against the promise of Rs 15 lakh”. AICCC secretary also described DAN as the most corrupt government, which he said was even unable to make a proper mud road for the people of the state. Jayakumar said it was a matter to wonder what the government of Nagaland had done with all the funds it had received during the UPA I and UPA II government. Stating that enough funds were provided to Nagaland government, he asked “what has happened to the justification made once that emergence of BJP-led government at the centre and NPF-led DAN government in Nagaland would pave way for inflow of funds like water from Delhi to Kohima. Jayakumar said the Congress has great scope as the party has remained intact unlike the NPF, which he said has been split into

three groups. He said the split would affect their vote share. AICC secretary said the only thing that Congress was concerned about was the inflow of funds for election that BJP was going to receive like in the case of Manipur, UP and Goa. He however said it depends on Nagas whether they were going to choose money or Jesus. He said the district committees were quite agile and geared up for the fight but there were some changes that needed to be done. He also made it clear that unlike other parties, Congress that believed in a democratic system would not declare a chief ministerial candidate and the MLAs would choose their leader. Former chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh and Pradesh Returning Officer (PRO) for Nagaland, Nabam Tuki, also highlighted about the organization election of NPCC and constituted the in-charge of organization election, 2017 committee. The programme was also attended secretary incharge of AIMCC for North East India and West Bengal Jarjum Ete and f o r m e r s p e a k e r, E T Ezung.

NEW DELHI, MAY 16 (AGENCIES): Equating the issue of triple talaq with the belief that Lord Rama was born in Ayodhya, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board told the Supreme Court that these were matters of faith and cannot be tested on grounds of constitutional morality. “If I have faith that Lord Rama was born at Ayodhya, then it’s a matter of faith and there is no question of constitutional morality” and it cannot be interfered with by a court of law, former Law Minister and senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, representing the Board, said while drawing an analogy between triple talaq and the belief about Lord Rama. “Triple talaq has been there since 637 AD. Sibal was countering the arguments put forth by the opponents of triple talaq who have been arguing for the past two days, with the government also saying a new law to regulate marriage and divorce among the Muslim community would be brought, if all forms of divorce including triple talaq are struck down. The AIMPLB counsel said the age-old practice was “part of my faith and you cannot determine what should be my faith. This is the question and this is the issue”. He asked whether the court should decide the faith of over 16 crore people. During the day-long hearing before a bench, which also comprised Justices Kurian Joseph, R F Nariman, U U Lalit and Abdul Nazeer, Sibal said the

“new dynamic” and a “new push”. “Our relationship needs more trust and more results,” said Macron, adding that relations between Merkel and his predecessor Francois Hollande, were not especially close or productive. The German Chancellor, meanwhile, backed a relationship of “full confidence” that generates “close cooperation” for the wellbeing of both countries, and she emphasised that “the interests of Germany are closely linked with the interests of France”. Merkel also said that the willingness in Paris and Berlin to move closer in their relationship will have results “in the medium term,” announcing that after the French parliamentary elections in June the two leaders and certain key ministers from both countries will meet to prepare a “roadmap” for the future of the

The party also plans on increasing corporation tax by 19 per cent to 26 per cent, a so-called “Robin Hood” tax on financial transactions to benefit the poor and asking the top 5 per cent of high earners to pay more to fund its multibillion-pound spending commitments on health, education and policing. Companies paying staff more than 330,000 pounds will pay a 2.5 per cent surcharge while salaries above 500,000 pounds will be charged at 5 per cent, in an attempt to discourage firms from paying excessive salaries and widening the pay gap.

BERLIN, MAY 16 (IANS): German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron have expressed their determination to revitalise the countries’ alliance to create a more effective, protective and integrated European Union (EU). On Macron’s first official visit to Berlin just 24 hours after being inaugurated, both leaders on Monday expressed their commitment to do everything they can to improve the rapport between the two capitals to, in Macron’s words, achieve an “historic new foundation” for the EU, Efe news reported. “We need to re-establish the European project,” said the French president, who added that for this change to occur it is necessary to “repair the trust” in the “historic relationship” between Paris and Berlin, while Merkel spoke of giving the two countries a

EU and the Eurozone, or the zone in which the common European currency, the euro, is utilised. The monetary union must “be deepened” and “be made more resistant to potential crises”, said Merkel, adding that a possible move in that direction could be a measure of fiscal harmonisation. The EU, she said, must become more agile in its procedures and most decisive in its actions. The German leader also said that she and Macron have an interest in moving forward with the establishment of a common asylum system within the EU and on the Defence Union. The French President also called for a “less bureaucratic” EU that “better protects” its citizens, and he categorically ruled out the so-called “eurobonds”n a proposal launched during the Eurozone crisis that would consist of combining debts among countries sharing the common currency, something to which Berlin is vehemently opposed.

The party claims its plans will raise an extra 6.4 billion pounds from income tax as the rate would be increased for people earning over 80,000 pounds, with a new 50p rate for those on more than 123,000 pounds. Labour said the total extra tax take, which also includes corporation tax rises and a crackdown on tax avoidance, would be 48.6 billion pounds. The par ty’s manifesto includes plans for an “excessive pay levy” on salaries above 330,000 pounds, more hours of free childcare and the nationalisation of railways, Royal Mail and England’s water companies. WASHINGTON, MAY 16 (IANS): Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has officially launched a political organisation aimed at funding “resistance” groups that are standing up to President Donald Trump, a media report said. Clinton on Monday tweeted that she was launching “Onward Together to encourage people to get involved, organise, and even run for office”, reports CNN. The group also included a website, which described the group’s goal as looking to “advance progressive values and work to build a brighter future for generations to come.” Sources told CNN earlier this month that the former Presidential hopeful was working with former aides and donors to build an organisation that will look to fund and invest in groups that have impressed her since her 2016 election defeat. In an email to supporters and donors, Clinton said on Monday “The challenges we face as a country are real. But there’s no telling what we can achieve if we approach the fights ahead with the passion and determination we feel today, and bring that energy into 2017, 2018, 2020, and beyond,” ” CNN quoted Clinton as saying in the email.

Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn described the party’s pledges as a “radical and responsible” plan for a Labour-led government, should it be voted in on June 8. While the Conservative Party dismissed the plans as unrealistic as the “sums don’t add up”, the Labour Party claimed it will offer the electorate a strong alternative to the Theresa May led government’s “fear-based” election campaign. “People want a country run for the many not the few. For the last seven years, our people have lived through the opposite, a Britain run for the rich, the elite and the vested interests. Labour’s mission, over the next five years, is to change all that,” Corbyn said at the launch at Bradford University today. “It’s a programme that will reverse our national priorities to put the interests of the many first. SEOUL, MAY 16 (AFP): South Korea’s left-leaning new leader Moon Jae-In will travel to the US for a summit with President Donald Trump next month, Moon’s spokesman said today, amid high tensions over the North’s nuclear ambitions. The summit will be held in Washington in late June, Yoon Young-Chan said, adding that details of the precise date and agenda would be decided later. Moon backs engagement with nuclear-armed North Korea to tr y to reduce tensions, while Trump’s administration has said military action was an option under consideration. “We will prepare the summit as an opportunity to cement personal ties and friendship between the two leaders,” Yoon said. The announcement came a day after the North boasted a “successful” launch of the longest-range missile it has ever tested, sparking global alarm.

LONDON/WASHINGTON, MAY 16 (IANS): As the world struggles to identify the cybercriminals behind the global ransowmware attack that hit 150 countries over the weekend, Neel Mehta, an Indianorigin security researcher working with Google, has claimed on Twitter that the hackers may have links to North Korea. According to Mehta’s discovery, the “Lazarus Group” that works on behalf of North Koreans may be behind the attack as the hacking group has, in the past, used the same coding and tools as were used in “WannaCrypt” -- the software used in the current hacking into the Microsoft operating software, the BBC reported on Tuesday. Mehta, a University of British Columbia graduate who earlier worked with IBM Internet Security Systems, posted “codes” on Twitter, potentially pointing at a connection between the “WannaCrypt” ransomware attacks and the malware attributed to the infamous “Lazarus Group”, responsible for a series of devastating attacks against government organisations, media and financial institutions.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced a political backlash from his right-wing base over the issue, particularly after a report that he advised Trump against moving the embassy to the disputed city for now. The report led Netanyahu to issue an angry rebuttal.

not the capital of Israel.” Israel occupied east Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community. Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, while Israel considers the entire city to be its undivided capital. The rival claims to Jerusalem lie at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and no countries currently have their embassies there, instead basing them in Israel’s commercial capital Tel Aviv. Separately, Israeli officials reacted angrily to reports in local media that representatives of the US consulate had suggested the Western Wall in east Jerusalem did not belong to Israel. “The statement that the Western Wall is part of the West Bank was received with shock,” an official in Netanyahu’s office said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

JERUSALEM, MAY 16 (AGENCIES): A row erupted Tuesday over US policy toward Israel days ahead of a visit by President Donald Trump, with fresh questions raised over the White House’s approach to the ultra-sensitive status of Jerusalem. Debate over whether the United States should move its Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem again flared, while a separate row over the city’s Western Wall -- the holiest site where Jews can pray -- also caused waves. Both issues provoked criticism of Trump’s White House in Israel as preparations intensified for his visit to the country and the Palestinian territories on May 22 and 23. It was the latest sign of the Israeli right’s growing disenchantment with Trump after having rejoiced in his election. Israeli right-wingers have pressed Trump to stick to his pledge to move the

ilm studio Disney has said hackers have threatened to release one of the studio’s forthcoming movies unless it pays a ransom. Disney CEO Bob Iger told ABC employees about the demand at a town hall meeting on Monday, The Hollywood Reporter said. He did not name the film, but Deadline reports that it is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Iger said Disney is refusing to pay, and that the studio is working with federal investigators. He added that the hackers had demanded the ransom in bitcoin and that they would release the film online in a series of 20minute chunks unless it was paid. It is not the first film studio to be threatened with online leaks. Last month, a group of hackers uploaded the fifth season of Orange is the New Black after Netflix refused to pay a ransom. Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth instalment of the Pirates franchise and will see Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow return to the ocean alongside Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom. It is due to be released in cinemas in the US on 26 May.

How many people does it take to write a hit song?

F

or decades, songwriting duos dominated popular music: Lennon and McCartney; Jagger and Richards; Benny and Bjorn. Not any more. A new study by Music Week magazine shows it now takes an average of 4.53 writers to create a hit single. The publication analysed the 100 biggest singles of 2016, and found that only four were credited to a single artist - Mike Posner’s I Took A Pill In Ibiza, Calvin Harris’s My Way; and twohits by rock band Twenty One Pilots. Ten years ago, the average number of writers on a hit single was 3.52, and 14 of the year’s top 100 songs were credited to one person, including Amy Winehouse’s Rehab and Arctic Monkeys’ When The Sun Goes Down. The best-selling song of 2016, Drake’s One Dance, needed eight writers - but even that pales into insignificance compared to Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk, which took 13 people to create, leading Paul Gambaccini to brand it “the most written song in history”. (To be fair, Uptown Funk originally listed a mere four writers, but others were added when it was noticed the song bore a resemblance to The Gap Band’s 1979 hit Ooops Upside Your Head.) K

But barely a minute later his poor header in his own box saw the ball fall for Etienne Capoue to head in. However, Cesar Azpilicueta restored Chelsea’s

India seeks postponement of SAFF C’ship

Ko l k ata , M ay 1 6 (IANS): The SAFF Championship football tournament is in hot water after India requested the competition’s organisers to postpone the meet by a few months due to Indian Super League (ISL). The 12th edition of South Asian Football Federation meet - played among Bangladesh, Bhutan, In-

dia, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka -- is scheduled to take place in Bangladesh from December 25. But after India put in a request for postponement, stating their unavailability during the period, the organisers are mulling pushing the meet to May. “India is saying that because of the Under-17 World Cup, the ISL is starting late. So, the

ISL will end late and not in December. Then they said there can be a merger of competing ISL and I-League and thus the number of teams can increase,” SAFF General Secretary Anwarul Huq told IANS.

“It (SAFF Cup) was supposed to start on December 25 and end on January 5 or 6. India wants it to be shifted to May. They said because of the World Cup their scheduling has been delayed,” he added.
