Over 200 houses damaged by storm

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 4 (NPN): Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) Home Department Tuesday informed that at least 248 houses have been damaged in Monday’s cyclonic storm that lashed parts of Nagaland including Dimapur, Kiphire, Phek, Wokha and Tuensang districts.

As per initial report of the damages caused, 15 houses were damaged at several places in Dimapur district including Rilan, Ward 8 (Chumukedima), Chekiye, Senjum, Molvom, Kupuhe, Vihokhu, Thahekhu, Padumpukhuri which included a market and a school.

In Kiphire district, NSDMA said around 180 houses and three schools were damaged. The places that were hit by storm included Kiphire town, Longmatra town, Longmatra village, Okhe village and Longthonger village. One person was severely injured and while two others suffered minor injury. Relief and restoration was reportedly in progress in Kiphire, but severed power line has not been restored yet.

Below normal rainfall expected this monsoon NEW DELHI, MAY 14 (AGENCIES): In bad news for the farm sector, India is expected to receive below normal rainfall during the upcoming monsoon which is likely to arrive in Kerala on June 4 and there is a 15 per cent chance of drought, private weather forecaster Skymet said on Tuesday.

Skymet said monsoon will be “below normal” in the country with a Long Period Average (LPA) of 93 per cent and an error margin of five per cent.

“It seems that initial advancement of monsoon over peninsular India is going to be slow,” Skymet CEO Jatin Singh said.

“All the four regions are going to witness lesser than normal rainfall, this season. Rainfall in East and Northeast India and central parts will be poorer than Northwest India and South Peninsula,” Singh said.

According to Skymet, there are 55 per cent chances of a below normal rainfall, which will have an influence of El Nino, a phenomenon linked to the heating of Pacific waters.

East and North East India will get 92 per cent of the LPA which falls under the below normal category.

Rao has been pursuing his idea of a federal front of non-Congress, non-BJP regional parties since last year, and TRS spokesperson Abid Rasool Khan’s statement that his party is ready to do business with Rahul Gandhi-led group is seen as significant ahead of the Lok Sabha poll results.

“KCR is very firm that the federal front should be in the driver’s seat and run the government,” Khan said.

In case the front falls short of numbers to form the government, the option

of the Congress supporting it from outside would be explored, he said.

“But the government would be of the federal front and Congress will have to extend support from outside. We are very firm that regional parties should be in the driver’s seat. The PM’s post should go to one of the constituents of the federal front. The prime ministerial candidate will be a consensus candidate from among the constituents (of the federal front)”, Khan said.

“We are open to talk to them (Congress) and see whether they support us to form government. If they do, regional parties are not averse as long as they (Congress) don’t come into the driver’s seat,” he said. The TRS leadership had earlier expressed its opposition to aligning with either the Congress or the Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh in case of a post-poll alliance.

Citizens asked to report on FAW attack KOHIMA, MAY 14 (NPN): Days after the state government directed all the departments to advise the district officials to take preventive measures against Fall Armyworm (FAW) attack on crops, the department of agriculture Tuesday informed the citizens to immediately report any such infestation to the nearest agriculture office for necessary advisory on FAW management, control and input support.

In a press release, director of agriculture stated that FAW infestation has been reported from the districts of Kohima, Kiphire and Wokha.

FAW, an exotic and invasive caterpillar, is an insect native to sub-tropical and tropical region of America.

It reached India in June 2018. FAW primarily affects Maize but also Rice, Millet, Sorghum, Sugarcane, Cotton and some vegetables.

The department informed that KVKs and ATMA along with agricultural extension functionaries were in action for scouting, surveillance and monitoring.

Petrol prices in all the metro cities decreased by 25-26 paise per litre while diesel became cheaper by 12-13 paise. The retail prices of petrol were slashed in New Delhi by 25 paise to Rs 71.18 a litre on Tuesday as against Rs 71.43 on Monday. MCCI passes three-point resolution

DIMAPUR: Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) successfully conducted its annual general meeting at MMC complex on May 14, wherein a three-point resolution was passed besides approving various committee reports.

DIMAPUR: Wokha Town Council (WTC) under Swachh Bharat Mission organized awareness programme on plastic waste management at Youth Centre, DBHSS Wokha on May 14.

According to DIPR report, ADC and administrator WTC, Wokha Andrew C. Imti while giving the key note address, highlighted the various initiatives like inter school essay,

painting competitions and poster campaign undertaken to sensitize educational institutions across Wokha town. He further added that plastic was a substance used everywhere but if not properly utilized can cause environmental hazard and urged the students to educate the public to discourage or maximize use of plastic.

Council (WTC) will shortly be issuing notification banning use of plastic bags and other single use plastic materials.

Cloth shopping bags made by Eastern Self Help Group were distributed to various schools as sample pieces. The schools were also encouraged to produce more such bags in future.

DIMAPUR: NSCN (Reformation) has cautioned that “many unscrupulous elements” were collecting “unauthorized taxation” in and around UT1 areas masquerading as its UT1 officials even after issuing stern warning earlier to all those responsible(s) to immediately refrain from “such sordid and fraudulent activities.”

Further, NSCN (R) informed all responsible that if any kind of UT1 tax notification was served, one could reach out or clarify from UT1 Supervisor at 9862746031 and 9485205557.

NSCN (R) also cautioned that even after issuance of its notification, if any transactions pertaining to UT1 jurisdiction take place without the knowledge of the supervisor, those responsible would be doing so at their own risk and “will also not be counted as legitimate taxation.”

DIMAPUR: In line with making Nagaland an organic state, additional director of agriculture, Kevikhu Achumi, has informed that 7000 ha of area has been demarcated as “organic” and that necessary steps was being undertaken to identify specific crops in each district for organic certification in phase wise manner.

He said this while addressing the orientation course on “soil health management” organised by department of Agricultural Extension, SASRD: NU in collaboration with Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) Eastern & Southern Region on May 11 at SASRD, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus.

Correspondent KOHIMA, MAY 14 (NPN): Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland, organised a two-day state level workshop on rotavirus vaccine introduction for training of trainers (ToTs), supported by UNICEF is underway Tuesday at hotel Vivor Kohima.

State immunization officer (SEPIO) Dr. Ritu Thurr in his address said the main objective of the workshop was to create a pool of master trainers at the district and block level to disseminate basic information about rotavirus to the grass root level. He said that according to WHO, rotavirus was responsible for more than 2,15,000 deaths each year in children younger than 5 years of age and 3.4% of all under-five deaths worldwide.

the need for coordination between Social Welfare department and Health and Family Welfare in administering rotavirus at the grass root level.

SMO WHO, Pranay Dutta in his address said the rotavirus vaccine was developed by Indian scientists to reduce the mortality under five and was a very safe vaccine. He lauded the department for achieving 98% of MRV campaign in the state recently.

John Snow Inc. (JSI) India who is a national monitor for training Prabir Kumar Roy also addressed the gathering. Marykali Yepthomi chaired the inaugural programme and also delivered welcome address.

Programme was attended by doctors from various districts of the state, representatives of WHO, UNDP, NPSP, UIP, UNICEF, and others.

Students organise ‘paper bag making’ training DIMAPUR: One day “paper bag making” training was organised by Masters of Social Work (MSW) 2nd semester interns of CAN Youth from from North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) in collaboration with CAN YOUTH and Kutchina Foundation on May 11 at Tribal Court, Burma Camp, Chwngayzaengc.

A press release by NEISSR stated that the training organised under the theme, “Moving towards a plastic free future”, began with a prayer, followed by a brief introduction on the harmful effects of the excessive use of plastic bag by Toviholi Y. Yepthomi, an MSW trainee.

She spoke on the harmful effects of plastic on health and environment such as pollution of soil, pollution of oceans and the release of toxic gas when the plastic is burned.

Yepthomi also highlighted few measures to control the use of plastic bag by introducing and adopting the use of jute bag and paper bag.

During the training, interns from NEISSR and the trainers led by Marina, a skill development trainer, taught eleven members of Self Help Group (SHG) to make paper bags.

KO H I M A , M AY 1 4 (NPN): District agriculture office (DAO), Kohima, department of Agriculture conducted training-cumdemonstration on management of Fall Armyworm (FAW) at Sakhabama village under Kohima district on May 11.

A press release from agriculture inspector, Kohima, Mhalevilie Thorie stated that, the training was organized by DAO Kohima after reports from farmers friend about infestation of Fall Armyworm on May 8, followed by official inspection on May 9.

The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) team comprising joint director, Bendanglila, deputy director, L. Nungsang Jamir

and agriculture officer, M. Yanger Ao from department of Agriculture.

Joint director, Bendanglila, shared about the history and occurrence of the pest and how it had spread worldwide and ultimately reaching Nagaland. She also explained about the life cycle of Fall Armyworm and how the pests infest the crops, its severity and management techniques. She encouraged the farmers to take keen concern in management of the new pest and report immediately to the authorities for efficient and timely management.

Demonstration on usage of organic and chemical insecticides was given

by DAO, Bodevi Shuya and joint director, Bendanglila. Practical demonstra-

tion was conducted in the farmers field and organic and chemical insecticides, insecticide spraying kits were distributed to the farmers.

The Village Council chairman, Viyol Thuphrie and farmers friend, Keduozo Kezo gave a short speech acknowledging the department for taking sincere approach for the management of the noxious pest at the earliest.

Bendanglila declared the village as sample village for the management of the pest and for future research. The programme was chaired by Akuno Zao, agriculture officer, DAO Kohima.

Correspondent KOHIMA, MAY 14 (NPN): Chief electoral officer (CEO) Nagaland organized oneday training for returning officers (ROs) and assistant returning officers (AROs) in connection with counting of votes for general election to 1-Nagaland parliamentary constituency and by-election to 26-Aonglenden assembly constituency held at conference hall, commissioner office, Kohima on Tuesday.

CEO Nagaland Abhijit Sinha in his key note reminded the ROs and AROs that counting of votes was one of the important stages of election process and urged everyone to assure K Y M C

He informed the gathering that counting of vote on May 23 would begin by 8 am and no closing time till it finished. CEO said this training is to give legal aspect of engagement for counting on paper slips of VVPAT and understanding as per the commission’s direction.

CEO said there would be 13 counting centres across the state including at commissioner’s office to count postal ballot and 12 election district counting centre for EVM and VVPAT. He said the result of the EVM counting from 12 locations would be transmitted to the ROs and commissioner, who will

consolidate all the results after the whole process and declare the final result.

3 KSO members held for school arson Correspondent IMPHAL, May 14: After the Kuki Student Organisation (KSO) in Chandel district denied its involvement in the recent arson attack on a catholic school in the district, police have named some of its top functionaries while seeking people’s help in arresting them.

On the night of April 25 last, buildings of St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School at Sugnu in Chandel district, the second oldest catholic mission school in Manipur was reduced to ashes by an inferno.

As the school was under pressure after six students were suspended for their alleged indiscipline, police investigating into the incident revealed that it was a case of arson attack and the needle of suspicion pointed towards members of Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Gunpi block of Chandel district.

The police had even arrested two of its members who were later released on bail by a local court.

Agartala, May 14 (PTI): The Centre has approved the Tripura government’s proposal for setting up a second Integrated Check Post (ICP) and two new border ‘haats’ in the state to improve trade and bilateral relations with neighbouring Bangladesh, an official said on Tuesday.

The decision was taken during an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by the secretary of border management of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)in Delhi on Monday, Special Secretary, Industries and Commerce of Tripura, Kiran Gitye told PTI. The Land Port Authority of India (LPI) would construct the ICP at Sabroom sub-division in South Tripura and this will be the second ICP along the Indo-Bangla border in the state after Akhaura ICP here, which was set up in 2013.

Gitte, who represented Tripura in the meeting said, the two border ‘haats’ (markets) would also be set up at Raghna in North Tripura district bordering Sylhet district and Ghosh

Khamar in South Tripura district bordering Feni district of Bangladesh.

The ICP project would be directly monitored by the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) due to its geo-political importance, the official said. The state government had sent the ICP proposal to the MHA for linking the bridge on river Feni with Chittagong division of the neighbouring country in 2016. The Chittagong port, considered one of the best ports in south-east Asia, is about 70 km from the bridge that connects Tripura with Bangladesh.

Tripuras Industries and Commerce Department has already identified 49 acres, including 9 acres of government land, for setting up the ICP at Sabroom. The first border ‘haat’ was set up at Srinagar in Sabroom in January, 2015 and the second border ‘haat’ was setup at Kamalasagar in Sipahijala district in June, 2015.

Business takes place in the ‘haats’ once a week with people living within 5 km radius of the border selling and buying locally produced goods and crops.

Aizawl, May 14 (PTI): In a joint operation, Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department officials and Assam Rifles personnel have seized 260 gm of heroin from a house at Zuangtui area here, officials said Tuesday.

The contraband was concealed inside a false ceiling in the house and one person was arrested in this connection on Monday night, officials of the Excise and Narcotics department said.

The contraband, worth around Rs 9.50 lakh was reportedly smuggled from Myanmar, Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department officials and Assam Rifles personnel added.

Guwahati, May 14 (PTI): Five suspected Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, including a woman, were apprehended by Government Railway Police (GRP) from Guwahati station on Tuesday, officials said.

Initially the woman and two men were apprehended and based on their interrogation, two other Rohingyas were also nabbed from the station, the GRP officials said.

During routine checking, a GRP team found the woman carrying a court order granting her bail, following her arrest in Manipur.

The men had train tickets to Delhi while the woman had a platform ticket.

Documents for obtaining Refugee Certificates from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in New Delhi were recovered from them, the officials said.

Aizawl, May 14 (IANS): Twenty-three Nepali girls, who were victims of human trafficking, were rescued in Mizoram and handed over to Nepalese authorities, police said here on Tuesday.

The teenage girls were handed over to Nepal government officials on Friday through the border transit of Kakarbhitta, along West Bengal’s Siliguri.

“Mizoram Police, the state’s Social Welfare Department and NGOs handed over the victims to the officials of Nepal’s Ministry of Women and Child Development,” Aizawl District police chief Karthik Kashyap told IANS. The victims were rescued by the Mizoram Police on April 24 from Champhi area that shares a border with Myanmar.

The government has alerted officials about the state becoming a “safe passage” for human trafficking and to keep a strict vigil over the illegal trans-border movement of people.

Another police official said that 20 Rohingya Muslim teenagers were rescued in Mizoram during the past three weeks. They are currently lodged in shelter homes.

Search underway for man swept away in river am.

Correspondent IMPHAL, May 14: A 42year-old man engaged in sand mining work was missing on Tuesday after he was pulled into the high current Thoubal River in Manipur’s Thoubal district.

Teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), state fire service and police have joined the search operation for the missing person launched by sand miners.

Thangjam Kunje Singh of Ukhongshang Mayai Leikai in Thoubal district was swept away by the strong river current of the swollen Thoubal River while he was mining sand with his co-workers around 9.30

Apart from swelling, Thoubal river is flowing with high current after the release of water from the Mapithel Dam constructed at the catchment area of the river in Kamjong district of Manipur.

Authority released the water of the dam during recent search for three victims of boat tragedy in the dam reservoir induced by a strong cyclonic storm that hit the dam area in the last week of April last.

The swelling of the river has been it hard for the sand mining work in the river bed which was carried out despite a ban imposed on sand mining by the government.

Indian High Commissioner to B’desh calls on Tripura CM

Sikkim University HOD accused of molesting student GANGTOK, May 14 (AGENCIES): Reports have emerged of an alleged molestation of a girl student in Mass Communication department of Sikkim University by lecturer Silajit Guha, who is also the HOD(Head of Department), reports the Northeast Today.

As per the information received by the media, four students have filed a complaint against Professor Guha. Guha allegedly molested one of his students at a wedding held in Ranipool, which both of them were attending. It is also informed that after the plight was shared by the victim, support was shown by the university students on Sikkim University Student’s Association (SUSA) Facebook Group which later encouraged the victim to file a complaint with the SUSA to the Internal Complaints Committee, Sikkim University. Registrar TK Kaul while speaking in an interview stated that the accused Professor has been removed from all his responsibilities and has been barred from visiting Mass Communication department of the university which is located at Indira Byepass road.

He further stated that an Internal Complaints Committee(ICC) has started its independent investigation. No police complaint has been lodged so far.

Meanwhile, members of Sikkim Women Commission taking note of the complaint met the registrar of Sikkim University.

Drug smuggler held with brown sugar worth Rs 1.6 cr

IMPHAL, May 14: Troops of Assam Rifles seized Brown Sugar worth around Rs 1.6 crore in the international market on Tuesday.

The contraband item was recovered from an autorickshaw during a check by troops of Tengnoupal Battalion of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (S) at its permanent vehicle check post (PVCP) at Khudengthabi along NH-102 in Tengnoupal district today, a release of the IGAR(S) said.

The troops also apprehended the alleged drug smuggler identified as Jampao Khungsai (40) son of late Gaukhojan Khongsai of Khudengthabi village under Moreh police station of Tengnoupal district.

The alleged smuggler carried the contraband item by concealing it in his autorickshaw. Based on specific input from a reliable source, a team from Khudengthabi post stopped a black colour auto-rickshaw, without registration number travelling from Moreh to Khudnegthabi.

During a thorough check of the auto-rickshaw, 42 packets of orange coloured powder suspected to be Brown Sugar and weighing approximately 582 gms (including packing material) were found hidden inside the body of the autorickshaw. “I am confident that the software I have developed can find weak spots to be breached in most computers and systems and I would like to work in the field of cyber security,” he said.

For, Aman, however, finding the finance to begin a startup is not forthcoming

more due to his age and educational qualifications, he has just passed class 10 from Itanagar Kendriya Vidyalaya than anything else. His father is a teacher in a state school in Arunachal Pradesh.

Aman also boasts of having developed a method by which he can breach a computer by taking the temperature and getting to know at what speed the fan inside the CPU is turning.

“Even typing on the keyboard enables me to get in,” he further said.

Another sphere of interest is working to solve cyber crime cases. He said that if a terrorist organisations post a video, he can geolocate the place where the recording was made.

Changing weather pattern

N

orth East India and East India are no strangers to thunderstorms in the April to June period and the frequency of bad weather has been regular during the past half a decade. Thunderstorm and lightning that often cause destruction and kill people.

The frequency of these storms is usually highest in the North East (30 days to 40 days between March and May). A thunderstorm, mostly a short-duration phenomenon that seldom lasts over two hours, is always accompanied by thunder and lightning, usually with strong gusts of wind, heavy rain, and sometimes with hail. Nagaland also experienced a very devastating storm on May 13 when various parts experienced gale winds, sudden thundershowers and hail. Though there was no report of any deaths, a few were injured when their tin-roof houses were blown away and trees uprooted. Such destructive weather patterns have become a reality and it could only get worse when climatic changes are triggering abnormal cycles. There is a difference between “weather “ and “climate” as the former relates to conditions in the atmosphere over a short time. In the latter, it relates to how the atmosphere behaves over a longer period of time. Climate change generally means changes in long-term averages of daily levels of temperature and rainfall. In a warming world, we can expect it to get wetter. The distribution of the rainfall throughout the year could change as we experience longer, drier spells, although when rain falls it may be in intense bursts. That being so, the issue of climate change is also a factor that is related with mindless destruction of forests and precipitation of the “green house gas effect” from various chemicals and fossil fuel emissions.

The local destruction of the local environment has also added to the changes in climate. According to environmentalists, there can be no compensation for the loss of natural forests because open forests are often classified as degraded. A dense or closed forest, as it is known in scientific terms, is characteristic of that area and climatic conditions. When a natural forest is felled what is lost is the ecological system, including rare species of flora and fauna. What replaces it is a monoculture plantation of fast-growing species. The contributory factors for abnormal weather patterns are varied and many. It is therefore important to make citizens aware of their roles and once this is achieved, perhaps even choice of environmental friendly products would become a necessity. No government in the state should overlook the role of sustainable development while pursuing economic growth. Ignoring this matter would only create an unfavourable climate literally and geographically and disturb the need to maintain equitable and healthy rates of growth. According to the weather scientists, the warming of the climate system has been in evidence by the increase in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and rising global average sea level. While nature takes its own course, humans too need to chart a course where pursuit for better life does not have a long term effect on their environment. Since abnormal weather conditions are not going away, what is needed is accuracy in predicting thunderstorms, state government has to put in place disaster management and people themselves have to be fully prepared.

You must not debate. The moment you obey the light of God, His Son shines through you in that very adversity; but if you debate with God, you grieve His Spirit (see Ephesians 4:30). You must keep yourself in the proper condition to allow the life of the Son of God to be manifested in you, and you cannot keep yourself fit if you give way to self-pity. Our circumstances are the means God uses to exhibit just how wonderfully perfect and extraordinarily pure His Son is. Discovering a new way of manifesting the Son of God should make our heart beat with renewed excitement. It is one thing to choose adversity, and quite another to enter into adversity through the orchestrating of our circumstances by God’s sovereignty. And if God puts you into adversity, He is adequately sufficient to “supply all your need” (Philippians 4:19).

Keep your soul properly conditioned to manifest the life of the Son of God. Never live on your memories of past experiences, but let the Word of God always be living and active in you.

If religion fails on the aforementioned counts, why do we need religion? Religion is considered as an agency/ institution/ organization formally entwined with the commands: DOs and DON’Ts that are intrinsically insulated within its pre-fabricated dogmas, traditions, doctrines and host of others. So, the very purpose of each and every religion is supposed to ‘unite’ or ‘bring together’ or ‘cement’ individuals/ groups/communities for higher levels of spirituality and ethical values. Further, it assumes that the Homo sapiens per se are not mere material entities alone, but spiritual too—wherein there’s an inner quest/ urge simmering in him/her to approximate higher values. So, religion per se basically and fundamentally takes care of spiritual enhancement of its adherents.

Given the conditions, sociologically and theologically speaking, the claim religion makes sounds good. But, the incidents that happened recently at Christchurch Mosque shooting where many Muslims died; on the Easter Day, a series of bombings in three churches and three hotels in Sri Lanka killing hundreds of worshippers and others who were present within the vicinity perished. These incidents convey clear messages that the religious extremists of different religion have resorted to terrorism. Religions have become the core of what’s happening irrespective of their shades, belief systems and theological variants.

These incidents clearly convey that the fundamentalists have taken over religion to kills and intimidate people. At this juncture, we need to view religion not solely on the basis of religious and doctrinal parameters, but see through the ways with which religion is webbed with culture, politics, economy and other societal facets.

Religion is placed at the crossroads, where religion is dubbed as the most pernicious tool placed in the hands of fanatics and far-right extremists. Therefore, it becomes mandatory to reflect on the survival of the present and future generations. Many tend to follow without reflecting: why one should go to church or mosque or temple

t has become fashionable to utilize the term “Change.”

In every society today, “change” is demanded and popularized as a tool to remedy much of society’s ailments.

Certainly, one cannot deny that ‘change’ is not needed. However, what is essential, first and foremost, is not what kind of change we want, which is quite easily answerable once we find the root causes of the things we want to change, but the need to understand what change is? In other words, we first need to answer the question, “What is change?” It is only by answering this essential question that we can truly comprehend the kinds of changes we want and how to go about realizing such changes so as to elevate our society.

The change could mean many different things. It could mean physical changes, such as changes in one’s appearance, fashion sense, lifestyles, and so forth; or it could mean inner changes or transformations, such as becoming wiser, kinder, virtuous and tolerant etc. All these aspects are ‘changes’; ‘changes’ as we usually understand the term. We can also equate change to the question of changes initiated from our own societal experiences, that is, changes based in accordance with the realities of one’s society. Or we can equate changes by mimicking that which is adopted in other advanced societies, which is what most of us usually understand by the term “change.” The point behind what has been said thus far is, it is of immense importance for us to first understand the term ‘change’ and define it within the context of our own community in which changes are to be implemented. Because if we are unable to define and understand this term ‘change’

or whatever? They blindly follow the crowd or as generations pass by traditions and practices are set and belief systems formed and thus have become part of our rituals.

Whether the meanings or values offered by religion make any sense or difference in the life and witness of its adherents or not—many do not want to know? If religion fails to instill values and teach how to be good, then the rituals that the worshippers adhere and follow through their life time have no value and no use. Obviously, the religious beliefs and practices have become routine and mundane and lost its significance.

If we look at the evolutionary theory we notice that there were phases in which humans with their reasoning capacity kept elevating from one phase to another. Homo sapiens per se are given the capacity to think and act rationally. By entering into critical inquiry they have ability to transform themselves and the world around them. So, human beings are not just geared towards materiality, but also in search of higher levels of life—spirituality which religion is supposed to offer. Religion apart from facilitating spiritual nurturing should imbue ethical values that are grounded in the religious texts pushing towards highest good by transforming the adherents to become moral beings.

In recent times religious institutions and establishments are filled with moral decadence that mirrors exactly what’s happening in the society. Religious establishments fail to offer corrective measures as they are soaked with all kinds of misdeeds and nefarious activities.

And so, religion fails to play any corrective role in the society as it is soaked with many ills. Nowadays religion mirrors the society, which means whatever happens in the society happens amongst those who claim to be the custodians of religion. If this is the state of affairs, how could one expect religion to be functioning light the light house to guide the society or providing normative principles for making the society—morally grounded..

Religious establishment ought to impart moral values and engage in promoting eternal virtues and ethical principle such as peace, justice, sharing, freedom, love, equality, dignity, so that its adherents would understand how to lead a life—as moral beings. Religion must become a pivotal force that galvanizes moral accountability

and ethical responsibility in all the societal functioning. On the contrary, those who are at the helms of affairs in the religious institutions indulge in all sorts of things that negate the basic core and tenets of religion then religion has failed in its function. And so, religion in recent times mirror’s what’s happening exactly in the society.

The moral values that are part of the religious tenets are gradually waning. As a consequence, violence, intolerance, hatred and lynching taking place—in the name of religion.

Religion is like two-edged sword—can be used for destruction as well as for edification. In a world of insecurity and unpredictability, religion ought to have offered or guided the people and those in power the ways and means of protecting the lives of people thereby moving towards establishing common humanity. While on the other, the fundamentalists of religion and its establishments are heavily engaged in the destruction of human lives with all sorts of diabolical designs and so now religion and its agency are construed as the core of all contestation that triggers and thus posing major problems in the world—involved in inhumane activities such as liquidation and intimidation. If religion and its agencies fail to promote common good and common humanity, then its use and presence in the society needs careful scrutiny.

Religion is one of the most powerful tools and as an agency/ institution which should get engaged in the transformation of society. On the contrary, we have increasingly been witnessing hostilities and conflicts—all in the name of religion. Wherever there are conflicts and whatever may be the political slogans, rhetoric and narratives religion and identity are nuanced in such ways instilling hatred and venom against others. The entire discourse is premised on nationalism whipping up the passion by invoking ‘religious majority’ as against the ‘religious minority’. If the core values of religion are not followed and promoted; if religion and its establishments are used to furthering political projects by distorting its basic tenets and if it is used to abuse women and children; amazing money and accumulating properties, then those who believe in religion have lost their case and by all means should get rid of religion.

What is Change?

within the confines of our own society, then the changes we initiate, instead of progressing and elevating our society, will bring forth many unintended detrimental consequences that further exaggerate the existing problems of our society.

If we define and understand change by proselytizing the same kinds of norms, values, beliefs, mores, and material things and conditions as we see in other societies, especially the advanced societies, then the question for us to ponder is, will these aforementioned aspects of change truly benefit and bring about the same results for our society as we had envisaged? Moreover, do we really need and want the same, and are we ready to usher in the same sort of changes in our own society? Such questions are usually answered with a resounding ‘Yes,’ and this shows that a society is trying to mimic and follow the ways of other societies without taking into consideration what such mimicry will inevitable bring, be it good or bad. And from my understanding, when society chants in chorus of change, they usually mean the wanting of the same sort of changes and lifestyles of highly advanced societies. Is this what our society really mean by ‘change?’

Experience has shown all of us, in one way or the other, that when we speak of change and changing the society, we usually have in the mind the adaptation of western or other highly advanced societies’ lifestyles. Yet, what we have constantly failed to realize time and again is that when we desire to change our society into a duplication of another society, a contradiction arises. For instance, when our community, which

is traditional and patriarchal by nature, desires to progress into modernity in a globalized world, we are held back by the fact that we are unable to give up our old traditional values, beliefs, customs, and practices.

In other words, we want to modernize as well as remain traditional. This is a contradiction which cannot be sustained for long. Advancement means letting go of traditional values, mores, beliefs, which are in total opposition to the values and beliefs of modernity. Society cannot be traditional and modern at the same time. It has to pick one of the two. If a society is modern, it cannot be traditional, and vice-versa.

However, the irony is that one does not need to be ‘bold’ to desire such changes. Any person can support and propagate such changes.

Changes, of course, do happen. But the important question becomes changes in a meaningful sense. To desire change by mimicking other societies is unchallenging and unproblematic, for mimicry is a way to remain lazy and avoid taking courageous decisions and actions. While, meaningful changes are difficult, a road filled with un-surmountable challenges requiring courage The term “change” needs to be defined and understood within the contextual realities of our community’s narratives, and needs to be something tangible which young and old, literate and illiterate can relate to. “Change’’ should not be foreign to anyone in our society who hears it and desires it.

Rather, it should be defined and understood within the cultural context of our community. For only then “change” becomes meaningful.

To give one simple example, one of the way to bring

ankr uptcies are a painful process for businesses, employees and business partners, but are an inevitable consequence of business dynamics and competition.

As industries, companies and economic trends evolve, some companies will be left behind and will have to comprehend the bankruptcy process in some way or the other. Bankruptcies and related issues have a lot to teach us regarding a speedier resolution of issues, acceptance of bankruptcies as a result of business dynamics and regulations that maximise recovery value.

While fur ther economic growth and investment impetus will be essential, the maturity of the business ecosystem to accept bankruptcies as one of the elements of business will be equally important.

For the overall economic system, the focus must be on a structured, fair and quick bankruptcy process.

While there is short-term pain around bankrupt businesses, a wellstructured and expedited resolution process leads to freeing resources tied up in bankrupt companies for deployment in higher growth projects elsewhere and create employment.

With the bankruptcy regime in India evolving and improving, the focus must be on reducing, even more, the time required to resolve bankruptcies for improving the “time value of money”.

Given the long-drawn process that bankruptcy proceedings are, even incremental reductions in the time taken to resolve the issues results in significant value addition for creditors and the business ecosystem. While the focus on time-reduction in the bankruptcy resolution process must not be at the cost of propriety, a renewed focus on this is essential.

Not only will time-reduction benefit the creditors, but the flow of recovered credit onto the next viable projects in the economy will have a significant impact on credit creation, investments and business sentiment.

One of the issues India has had to face in the last five years has been the double whammy of a slowdown in credit growth, and the opportunity cost of lost income for banks as capital stuck in bankrupt projects has not generated the additional revenue that was possible if it were recovered and lent out elsewhere profitably.

meaningful changes in our society require not some drastic transformation, but adjustments in some of our traditional customs and amending those values, beliefs, and practices inhibiting our community in general. The importance here is that to make even the smallest of adjustments for particular sections within our society require courage which is more difficult than mimicry. Courage is required to enable some sort of evolution of our traditional customs and practices. However, when such adjustments are made, meaningful changes take place bearing fruits for the society and progress the welfare of its people. Indeed, people favour for change without understanding what change entails; neither do they define the term ‘change’ within the context of their lived existential realities.

This is why we see lots of changes in our community with nothing to show for in terms of our mindset and progress in the welfare of our people. We are lured mostly by the material and physical aspects of change not knowing the kinds of ruinous consequences they inevitably bring.

What I am trying to convey is that we need to define and understand “change” within the contextual realities of our society so that we may identify specific areas where changes are necessary. This way meaningful changes can be made that brings about concrete and positive transformation of our community. Otherwise, if we ignore to understand “change” within our community’s social, cultural, political, and economic realities, then we make blunders by making unnecessary and unneeded changes attracting more problems than they solve.

The slowdown in credit growth due to bankruptcies has been driven by both a reluctance to lend and a reduction in the availability of capital. A lack of lending to both businesses and individuals has resulted in lower investment and lower consumption, trends that will be gradually reversed as bankruptcy resolutions come by.

As capital available to lend declined due to unresolved bankruptcies, income earned by banks suffered not only due to nonperforming assets (NPAs) but also due to the opportunity cost of not having access to capital that would have otherwise earned income for them. A robust bankruptcy resolution mechanism can help alleviate the problem. Most importantly, avoiding the vicious credit cycle of lower capital availability leading to poor financial returns, which in turns leads to further credit constraints can be avoided through effective mechanisms.

Therefore, an effective bankruptcy redressal system adds significant value to the banking system by both the provision of capital and also additional income on the said capital that can be utilised elsewhere.

The recent bankruptcies such as Jet Airways and credit issues that Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) faced has also brought to the fore certain voices advocating for the government to step in to rescue troubled businesses. The focus for the government must be on continually improving the bankruptcy mechanism by reducing the time required for resolutions and addressing issues that the credit ecosystem may face. However, it is not the government’s role to bail out private businesses since we cannot have situations whereby profits are private, and losses are passed on to the exchequer and the taxpayer.

Bankruptcies are unavoidable residues of the economy. If handled well they help to cleanse the economy as inefficient businesses fall behind and efficient ones race ahead. The government’s role is that of a facilitator of the overall ecosystem, rather than a capital provider in situations of distress. If done well short-term pain can lead to significant gains for the overall economy down the road.

ust a week after the State wide Mass Social Work, the sight and smell that greets the office goers in and around the New Capital Complex, Kohima, especially the road leading towards the Directorate of Labour is definitely not a pleasant one. A person who is new to Kohima, the State Capital, would be shocked and appalled at the sorry state of affairs when it comes to waste management in and around the new capital complex area which houses the offices of all the high ranking officials of the State inclusive of the elected representatives.

Take for example the road leading to the Directorate of Labour which is now too narrow for two cars to pass because of the garbage dumped there.

The smell that greets you while crossing that road is enough to encourage one to skip a few meals for the day and those with weight issues would definitely benefit from visiting the area on a regular basis.

However on a more serious note, the need for a proper waste management system in the State Capital has never been greater and the concerned authority in collaboration with the citizens themselves must come up with a proper workable action plan and implement it at the earliest if indeed Kohima is to become a Smart City with Smart people striving towards ‘a cleaner and greener Kohima’.

Lane dividers along Tajen Ao road especially along the Metro Hospital to Duncan junction have been bearing the blunt of rash driving lately. While careless and mostly intoxicated drivers are the main reason for the accidents, the poorly lit and absence of reflective traffic signs and street lights along the stretch of road is also a major concern.

The dividers are sometimes difficult to notice especially in the light of an approaching vehicle. So I kindly request the concerned authority to please look into the matter as early as possible for the convenience and safety of the public.

UJJAIN, MAY 14 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party may have been attacking the Nehru-Gandhi family of late, but Congress President Rahul Gandhi has promised he will not resort to throwing insults at PM Modi’s family in retaliation. Mr Gandhi said he would defeat PM Modi with “love” and would never insult his mother and father.

“Modi ji talks with hatred. He insults my father, grandmother, great grandfather. But I will never in my life speak about his family, his mother and father. I will die, but will never insult his mother and father,” he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

NDA will get two-third majority: Rajnath Singh New Delhi, May 14 (IANS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party will win more seats in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections than in 2014 and added that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will get a two-third majority.

“A f t e r a d d r e s s i n g more than 110 election rallies across the country and sensing people’s mood, I can say that the BJP is going to win more seats than it won in 2014. As far as the NDA is concerned, possibility of getting a two-third majority cannot be ruled out,” the former party President told the media here at the BJP headquarters.

Ko l kata , M ay 1 4 (IANS): A controversy erupted hours before BJP President Amit Shah’s rally here on Tuesday after banners and flexes of the saffron party leaders including that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi were removed from the roadside.

Shah is scheduled to hold a roadshow from central Kolkata’s Shahid Minar to Swami Vivekananda’s residence in north Kolkata’s Maniktala on Tuesday afternoon. Just two hours before the roadshow, a large number of cut outs and flexes of Shah, Modi and north Kolkata’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rahul Sinha, were removed from a long stretch of Lenin Sarani.

BJP leaders accused the state administration of “resorting to hooliganism” to impede Shah’s rally and alleged that the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress activists were deliberately damaging the posters and cut outs while removing them. “The Election Com-

mission has given us permission to hold the roadshow.

How is it possible that party banners and flags are not allowed on the road? Bengal government’s hooliganism is going on here. We will talk to the EC about this,” BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said.

Police claimed the drive was taken up under the direct instruction of the Election Commission, as the flexes were put up on state government properties without permission.

The BJP leaders and activists on the spot, however, claimed that Trinamool Congress activists were removing flexes in presence of police.

“If EC has asked them to do so, the personnel of the electoral body should be present on the spot”.

“But these people are Trinamool activists. They are deliberately damaging the cut outs and flexes and throwing them on the roadside to damage them,” a BJP leader alleged.

When contacted, the Election Commission refused to comment saying they have “no specific update” on the issue.

“We do not have any specific update at this point.

An Indian-American, Dube had joined Jet Airways in August 2017 after serving various roles at Delta Airlines, Sabre Inc and American Airlines in the US, Europe and Asia.

“We wish to inform that Vinay Dube, chief executive officer has resigned from services of the company with immediate effect due to personal reasons,” Jet Airways said in a regulatory filing Tuesday.

Dube had stepped in the position after almost 15 months of the departure of then chief executive Crammer Ball. During the period Agarwal officiated the position as acting CEO. Earlier in the day, Jet Airways informed exchanges of Agarwal’s resignation from the company on personal grounds.

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI): Wholesale inflation eased to 3.07 per cent in April on cheaper fuel and manufactured items, even as prices of food articles remained high, official data released Tuesday showed.

The Wholesale Price Index-based inflation was at 3.18 per cent in March and 2.93 per cent in February. It was 3.62 per cent in April 2018.

Inflation in the ‘food articles’ basket hardened to 7.37 per cent during April 2019 as against 5.68 per cent in March, as prices of vegetables skyrocketed. Food inflation has been on the rise for the last five months since December 2018 when it was (-) 0.42 per cent.

Vegetables inflation too has seen a steep rise since December 2018 when it was (-)19.29 per cent. It stood at 40.65 per cent in April, up from 28.13 per cent in the previous month.

Amongst food items,

Price of subsidised LPG was almost unchanged at Rs 495.86 on April 1.

Manufactured items too saw easing of prices with inflation at 1.72 per cent in April, against 2.16 per cent in the previous month.

The Reser ve Bank, which mainly factors in retail inflation for its monetary policy, had last month cut interest rate by 0.25 percentage points. The next policy review in scheduled for June 6.

Assocham further said the overall food inflation remains well within control and there is an abundant supply of food items.

“Lower cost of borrowing is one of the major factors for reviving consumer interest.”

According to official data released Monday, retail inflation inched up to a six-month high of 2.92 per cent in April due to a spike in food prices, including vegetables and protein rich items.

The RBI has projected retail inflation to remain at 2.9-3 per cent during AprilSeptember, mainly due to lower food and fuel prices as well as expectation of a normal monsoon.

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI): The RBI needs to go in for a larger rate cut, more than 25 basis points, in the next monetary policy review in June to reverse the current slowdown in the economy, said a research report by country’s largest bank SBI. The RBI had cut the key short term lending rate (repo) by 25 points each in its last two policy reviews and is slated to announce the next bi-monthly policy on June 6. “Are we currently facing a quasi growth slowdown?

The apparent nervousness is clearly reflected in the trends exhibited in key stock indices,” said the SBI’s research report ‘Ecowrap’.

Initial trends in fourth quarter of 2018-19 exhibit overall decline in sectors such as telecom equipment and infra services; agro chemicals; petrochemicals; infrastructure developers and castings, it noted.

Also, pharmaceutical companies dependent on exports are likely to report poor growth numbers. In JanuaryMarch 2018-19 quarter, of 384 companies more than 330 companies exhibited negative growth in mid-line and bottomline. Perhaps, significantly depressed rural prices is disturbing rural income and weak demand is affecting the FMCG sector, the report said. Overall, the report said: “We still believe the current slowdown could still be transitory, if proper policies are adopted in interregnum.” To this end, “we are thus penciling a larger rate cut by RBI in the forthcoming policy”.

K a r ac h i , M ay 1 4 (PTI): A powerful remotecontrolled bomb blast near a mosque in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has killed four policemen and injured 11 others, the second major attack to rock the restive region in the last three days.

The explosion occurred on Monday night when people were assembling for prayers near the mosque in the provincial capital Quetta’s Satellite

Town area. The attack took place shortly after a police van arrived at the site to provide security to the people offering prayers at the mosque.

“The police vehicle carr ying personnel for mosque security was targeted in the blast in which our four personnel of Rapid Response Group (RRG) lost their lives, while the condition of another was stated to be serious,” said

Quetta Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Razzaq Cheema.

Another 11 people were injured in the attack, Provincial Home Minister Ziaullah Langov said.

An improvised explosive device planted in a motorcycle went off close to the police van. Sources said unidentified people parked the explosive-laden motorbike near the mosque in Satellite Town area and detonated it by remote control when the police van arrived there, the Dawn reported. “Three police officials among the injured died soon after being brought here at the hospital,” officials at a healthcare facility said.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace those involved in the blast.

The banned Tehreeki-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the motorcycle bomb blast targeting the police vehicle, the report said.

May’s cabinet, and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet, are both due to take stock of the talks on Tuesday, with neither side optimistic about the prospects for an agreement that could secure a majority in parliament. In a letter to May, former cabinet ministers including Gavin Williamson, who was sacked earlier this month over the Huawei leak, cautioned her against any deal involving Corbyn’s central demand of a customs union.

3 killed, 20 wounded in blasts in Afghanistan

Kabul, May 14 (AP): Three explosions ripped through an Afghan provincial capital, Jalalabad, killing three people and wounding another 20 on Monday. All of the casualties were believed to be civilians, said Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for eastern Nangarhar’s governor.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack which came as the United Nations expressed grave concerns about the increase in violence around the country during the first week Ramadan, the ongoing Muslim month of fasting from sunrise to sunset.

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI): After months of silence, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar was back in the news on Tuesday with an article justifying his “neech” jibe against Narendra Modi, and also calling him the most “foulmouthed” prime minister the country has seen.

The article, published in Rising Kashmir and The Print, drew sharp retorts from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which called him “abuser-in-chief ” and described his party as arrogant.

In the article, Aiyar also slammed Modi on a series of issues and asked, “Remember how I described him on 7 December 2017?

Was I not prophetic?”

In 2017, the former Union minister called Modi “neech aadmi” following which he was suspended from the Congress party.

Justifying that comment, Aiyar said in his article, “Modi will, in any case, be ousted by the people of India on 23 May. That would be a fitting end to the most foul-mouthed prime minister this country has seen or is likely to see. Remember how I described him on 7 December 2017?

Later, in Shimla, when reporters questioned him on

the controversy, Aiyar said it was just one line in his article and he will not get involved in media’s “games”.

“I am a fool, but not such a big fool,” he said.

BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao put out a tweet saying “Abuser-inchief ’ Aiyar” had returned to justify his 2017 ‘Neech’ jibe. “... Aiyar then apologized & hid behind poor Hindi excuse. Now he says he was prophetic. Congr revoked his suspension last year for filthy outburst.Double speak & arrogance of @ INCIndia on display again!” he said.

“Pak-crony Aiyar has the audacity to call PM ‘anti-national’. Nation knows that @narendramodi ji is the epitome of ‘Rashtra Bhakti’. Aiyar is known for ‘Parivar Bhakti’ as a (political) slave of the dynasty. It isn’t surprising at all that all abusers are close Gandhi confidants.”

In the article, Aiyar said he has found out why Modi “loathes” Jawaharlal Nehru so much -- because Nehru had a degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, and was convinced that to pull Indians out of superstition, modern India must cultivate a “scientific temper”.

This, Aiyar said, drives Hindutva supporters “nuts because they like to believe the ‘udan khatolas’ of mythology were the earliest F-16s to be invented by Hindus, and that Hindu plastic surgery, not a transplant operation, is what led to an elephant’s head surmounting Lord Ganesh.”

“Both these stunningly illiterate claims come from the mouth of none less than the Prime Minister of our country, whose acquaintance with higher education has gone no further than

lying about degrees from Delhi and Gujarat universities that he never got and who can obviously not tell a scientific proposition from a ‘dhokla’,” Aiyar wrote.

He also referred to Modi’s recent comment that he ordered the Indian Air Force to strike at Balakot despite heavy cloud cover because he believed that heavy cloud cover at the time would allow Indian jets to evade Pakistani radar.

“This is to insult our brave airmen and, above all, the Chief of Air Staff. Not one of them was so ignorant of the fact that radar is not a telescope whose vision can be clouded over. Radar is used precisely because, whatever the weather conditions, it can pinpoint incoming aircraft,” Aiyar asked.

“Did Modi take his senior-most Air Force officers for fools that he could trot out such ridiculous unscientific rubbish before them? And were they so pusillanimous that they dared not correct such a vacuous Prime Minister?” he wrote in the article, which comes as the long-drawn election process draws to a close with the final phase of voting scheduled on May 19.

Aiyar wrote that Modi needs to be warned that he is “guilty of anti-national activity in trying to ride on

the sacrifices of our army and CRPF martyrs in a dirty election campaign; of defaming the Indian Air Force by portraying them as complaisant idiots in his scientific illiteracy.”

Aiyar’s comments on Modi are his personal opinion: Congress

The Congress Tuesday distanced itself from the remarks of its leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying it is his personal opinion, even as the party accused the prime minister of lowering the dignity of his office.

Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said his party is not on the back foot regarding Aiyar’s remarks, instead it should be Modi who should be ashamed for his remarks on former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

threat the employment prospects of the native Goan population and that he had already spoken to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant about his concerns about the issue.

“Goan youth has to get jobs meant for them at any cost,” Sardesai has said.

On Monday, the youth wing of Goa Forward also submitted a petition to Governor Mridula Sinha who is also the Chancellor of Goa University to look into the domicile issue.

The complaint to the EC demands that Sardesai’s comment invoked the section of sedition.

However, no one would have imagined that such contention could lead to one man shooting at his own cousin. One such instance took place in Jhajjar district of Haryana where a man shot at his cousin using an unlicensed weapon for casting his vote in favour of a rival political party. The man in question has been identified as mandal-level Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dharmender Silani, who is currently absconding, reports Mirror Now digital.

voted for the Congress party in phase VI of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

A case of attempted murder under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with relevant sections of the Arms Act has been registered against Silani, who is currently absconding.

A former member of the Bahadurgarh civic body and an office-bearer of BJP’s mandal unit, Silani had asked Raja and his family to vote for BJP. However, he found out that they cast their ballots in favour of the Congress party on the request of local

Congress functionary and his elder brother, Harender Singh. This led to Silani having a confrontation with Raja on Sunday night following which the accused went to the victim’s home the next day with a .315 bore gun and shot at him, said investigating police personnel.

New Delhi, May 14 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to BJP Yuva Morcha leader Priyanka Sharma, arrested for a meme on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The court also ordered that upon her release, she should tender an apology.

Initially, the court had ordered Sharma to be released on bail on the subject that she should tender an apology. Sharma’s counsel Neerak Kishan Kaul vehemently argued that an apology would have a chilling effect on freedom of speech.

The court modified its order stating that upon her release, she will tender an apology. During the arguments, Kaul said that political satire cannot be penalised. “It will set up a wrong trend.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party leader was accused of sharing on social media a photo of the Trinamool Congress supremo photoshopped on a picture of Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra from last week’s MET Gala event in New York City. She was arrested on May 10 and remanded to 14 days judicial custody.

Kasargode (Kerala), May 14 (IANS): State Crime Branch police on Tuesday arrested two leaders of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) from Kasargode district on charges of murdering two Youth Congress workers.

Krupesh, 19, and Joshy, 24, who were members of the Congress party’s youth wing, were attacked on February 17 by three men.

While Krupesh died at the Kasaragod district hospital, Joshy succumbed to his injuries on way to a medical facility in Mangaluru city of Karnataka.

The police arrested Manikandan and Balakrishnan following their detailed questioning by the Crime Branch team, a spokesperson said.

With this, the total arrests in the case have gone up to 13 and one person on the radar of the police has fled the country, officials said.

The Congress party and its Kasargode Lok Sabha candidate, Rajmohan Unnithan, have made this murder a major election issue and are expecting to pull off a surprise win in a seat that has been held by the CPI-M over a long period.

Reacting to the arrests, state Congress President Mullapally Ramachandran told the media in Thiruvananthapuram that he is not happy with the probe and the state police should investigate more thoroughly in order to unmask the real culprits.

Another minor raped in J&K, accused arrested

Srinagar, May 14 (IANS) : Days after the rape of an infant in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora evoked shock and outrage, another case of a minor’s rape came to light in the the state’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday.

Based on a complaint lodged by the family of a teenaged girl in Ganderbal, police arrested the accused and set up a special investigation team (SIT) for a speedy probe. “The accused has been arrested and has been medically examined.

“The latest US act constitutes an extension of the American method of calculation for bringing North Korea to its knees by means of ‘maximum pressure’ and an outright denial of the underlying spirit of the June 12 Joint Statement that has committed to establish new bilateral relations,” Yonhap News Agency quoted a spokesperson for the North Foreign Ministry as saying.

“The US should ponder over the consequences its heinous act might have on the future developments and immediately return our ship,” the spokesperson said in a statement carried by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency.

The North also said that the time when the “US held sway over the world at its own free will is gone long ago, and it would be a biggest miscalculation if the US thought that North Korea is among the countries where the American-style logic of ‘strength might work for’.

Dhaka, May 14 (PTI): The Bangladesh government, citing security reasons has set up a new makeshift court adjacent to a prison outside Dhaka to try ailing former prime minister Khaleda Zia, serving 10year jail term in two graft cases.

Zia, 73, was sent to jail in February last year by a local court on charges of embezzling foreign donations meant for an orphanage, named after her slain husband and president Ziaur Rehman, during her premiership between 2001 and 2006.

Rehman was the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

ncredible rare photos show just what the brave WWII pilots of 'The Few' would have experienced while fighting in the Battle of Britain or in the skies above Dunkirk.

Remarkable images, some of which have never been seen before, capture the life and times of Squadron 610's fighter pilots, a unit which witnessed some of the most intensive aerial combat in the Second World War. The squadron was formed in Chester and initially flew out of Hooton Park in the Wirral, but moved to RAF Gravesend at the outbreak of the war and then RAF Biggin Hill in south London before the Battle of Britain.

The pictures form part of a new book on the squadron - 610 (County of Chester): Auxiliary Air Force Squadron 1936-1940 - written by military historian David Bailey.

Squadron 610 was one of the units that bore the brunt of the Luftwaffe offensive in summer 1940 and sustained heavy losses, eventually moving to RAF Acklington in Northumberland at the end of August that year to recover.

The 610 (County of Chester) Squadron was first established in 1936 at Hooton Park, Wirral.

On 26 May 1940, Churchill ordered the start of Operation Dynamo - the evacuation of more than 330,000 Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk during WWII. RAF Fighter Command began to operate patrols from Boulogne to Dunkirk and the operations were to continue for the next nine days during the evacuation.

They suffered heavy losses, but over 800 small boats volunteered to help bring 330,000 troops home, the RAF stoically performed their duty of protecting the

shores and providing shelter over the evacuation.

The 610 Squadron then played a key role in the Battle of Britain, claiming a heavy toll on the Luftwaffe while operating from Biggin Hill and Hawkinge.

Due to the hard work of The Few - supported by the many on the ground Britain was able to stand firm in 1940 and eventually launch the counter attack four years later which would see the Allied Forces defeat the Third Reich.

The rock features the image of a ship, complete with sails and a rudder, and what appears to be a sacred heart, a heart covered by a cross. Two apparent dates are also visible, 1786 and 1787, which would place the inscription to a few years before the onset of the French Revolution.

There are many ideas already concerning the meaning behind the inscription. Brest is a port city that lies on the opposite side of the bay to Plougastel-Daoulas.

Local experts think that the words might be written either in old Breton, a now-extinct language that was spoken in Northern France between the 9th

and the 11th century AD, or Basque.

The individual who wrote the engraving, it has also been suggested, may have been semi-literate, meaning that the intended words may be poorly transcribed and the letters may related more to the sounds of the words as the author heard them.

Others have suggested that the carving was engraved by a Russian soldier who had been garrisoned in the nearby fort.

The name is a reference to the French scholar, and one of the founding figures in Egyptology, Jean-François Champollion, who helped decode some of the Egyptian hieroglyphics present on the famed Rosetta Stone.

ollywood actress Felicity Huffman has pleaded guilty to paying $15,000 to a fake charity that facilitated cheating when her daughter took the SATs for college admission.

When she appeared in court in Boston on Monday, prosecutors recommended a sentence of four months prison time for the 56-yearold “Desperate Housewives” TV star for her role in the college admissions scandal, CNN reported.

They also suggested a $20,000 fine and 12 months of supervised release for the charge, which is a felony.

She is slated to be sentenced on September 13.

The charity was associated with Rick Singer, who has confessed to helping wealthy parents cheat on standardised tests for their children. Singer also bribed college coaches to falsely designate students as recruited athletes, smoothing their path to admission, a criminal complaint says.

“I had no knowledge of Singer paying (others),” Huffman said on Monday before she broke down in tears. “Everything else (prosecutors) said I did, I did.”

Huffman and Singer exchanged emails on how to provide her daughter with extra time to take the SAT exam, prosecutors said, and arranged for the girl to take the test in a location controlled by an administrator whom Singer had bribed.

During an average sixyear follow-up there were 24 heart attacks and 49 deaths from any cause. The 85 variables were entered into a machine learning algorithm called LogitBoost, which analysed them over and over again until it found the best structure to predict who had a heart attack or died.

"The algorithm progressively learns from the data and after numerous rounds of analyses, it figures out the high dimensional patterns that should be used to efficiently identify patients who have the event. The result is a score of individual risk," JuarezOrozco said.

"Doctors already collect a lot of information about patients -- for example those with chest pain.

We found that machine learning can integrate these data and accurately predict individual risk," he said.

"This should allow us to personalise treatment and ultimately lead to better outcomes for patients," he added.

Google's search engine, face recognition on smartphones, self-driving cars, Netflix and Spotify recommendation systems all use machine learning algorithms to adapt to the individual user.

Kyrgios advances at Rome Masters

R o m e , M a y 14(Agencies): Nick Kyrgios has kickstarted his clay court campaign with an impressive three- set win over world No.14 Daniil Medvedev at the Rome Masters. Bounced out of Madrid in a first round loss last week, Kyrgios looked up against it for more significant time on the red dirt before the French Open when he was drawn to play the in-form Russian.

UEFA opened an investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the club earlier this year but City deny any wrongdoing and say the accusations are entirely false.

The Premier League champions have expressed concern about the reports which have emerged - initially in the New York Times - suggesting that investigators will push for a Champions League ban,

before any official statement has been made by the European governing body.

A City statement read: “Manchester City FC is fully co-operating in good faith with the CFCB IC’s (club financial control body investigatory chamber) ongoing investigation.

“In doing so the club is reliant on both the CFCB IC’s independence and commitment to due process; and on UEFA’s commitment of March 7 that it ‘...will make no further comment on the matter while the investigation is ongoing’.”

“The New York Times report citing ‘people familiar with the case’ is therefore extremely concerning.

The implications are that either Manchester City’s good faith in the CFCB IC is misplaced or the CFCB IC process is being misrepresented by individuals intent on damaging the club’s reputation and its commercial interests. Or both.”

“Manchester City’s published accounts are full and complete and a matter of legal and regulatory record. IPL sets new record on Twitter with 27 mn tweets New Delhi, May 14 (IANS): After 60 matches of riveting cricketing action, Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings in the thrilling final to win their fourth title of the Indian Premier League(IPL).

As decibels hit new levels across stadiums in India, the roar of cricket fans was just as resounding on Twitter.

This year, Twitter saw a record-breaking 27 million tweets, a 44 per cent increase over 2018’s IPLrelated tweets.

The golden tweet for IPL 2019 was the tweet from Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya acknowledging MS Dhoni as his friend and source of inspiration. The tweet received nearly 16K retweets.

Mumbai Indians dominated the conversation on Twitter on Sunday when they won the final, owning 63 per cent of total mentions vs CSK’s 37 per cent.

However, it was the Chennai Super Kings that consistently won hearts by becoming the most tweeted about team on the micro blogging website.

11th OBT: Stallions, Jumpers win Correspondent

Ko h i m a , M ay 1 4 (NPN): Defending champions Stallions, Taurus, Team Orca, Backyard Ballers, Jumpers, and Ophidians won their respective league matches on the second day of the ongoing 11th Open Basketball Tournament (OBT) at Kohima local ground on Tuesday.

The week-long tournament is being organised

by Suncity Kohima in association with the Nagaland Basketball Association.

In the league match on the second day, Taurus overcame Elite 23-21 in a tight contest. While the defending champions Stallions made an easy passage over St Joseph College by 46-28 in their first match.

Team Orca defeated Tepenjem by 49-23. Road Runners and Trouncers had to settle for a draw with 33 points each at the end of the match and shared a point each.

XLR8 lost their second successive match as they lost against Backyard Ballers by a point. Ballers won the match by 26-25 in the fifth match.

Jumpers hammered Art City Warriors 73-17.

In the 7th match, Ophidians beat CMD Hoopers 39-33. Both teams face an uphill task to enter the next round with a match remaining in the league.

Kohli named international cricketer of the year Mumbai, May 14 (PTI): India captain Virat Kohli bagged the International Cricketer and Batsman of the Year award during the CEAT Cricket Rating (CCR) International awards 2019.

India’s Lakshmi becomes first female ICC match referee N e w D e l h i , M ay 14 (PTI): Former India women cricketer G S Lakshmi has become the first woman to be appointed to ICC’s international panel of match referees and will be eligible to officiate in international games with immediate effect.

Claire Polosak had become the first ever woman umpire to stand in a men’s ODI, earlier this month.

Lakshmi, 51, who first officiated as a match

referee in domestic women’s cricket in 2008-09, has overseen three women’s ODI matches and three women’s T20I matches.

“To be selected in the international panel by the ICC is a huge honour for me as it opens up new avenues. I have had a long career as a cricketer in India and also as a Match Referee. I hope to put my experiG S Lakshmi ence both as a player and as a match official to good circuit,” said Lakshmi in use on the international an ICC statement. Austra-

lia’s Eloise Sheridan has joined compatriot Polosak on the ICC development panel of umpires, taking the number of women on that panel to seven.

Lauren Agenbag, Kim Cotton, Shivani Mishra, Sue Redfern, Mary Waldron and Jacqueline Williams are the other women officials on that panel. The first woman on the development panel of umpires was Kathy Cross, who retired last year.

Adrian Griffith, ICC Senior Manager - Umpires and Referees - hailed Lakshmi and Sheridan’s appointment.

“We welcome Lakshmi and Eloise to our panels, which is an important step forward in our commitment to encouraging women officials. It is heartening to see their progress and I am sure many more women will be inspired to follow their example,” said Griffith.

Gibbs to miss French Open

New York, May 14 (Agencies): American tennis player Nicole Gibbs will miss the French Open after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer by her dentist.

The 26-year-old said she was made aware of a growth on the roof of her mouth during a routine visit last month, with the examination revealing she has salivary gland cancer.

Gibbs, who is ranked world No 116, will undergo surgery on Friday and has targeted a return to competitive action for Wimbledon qualifying, which begins on June 24.

“Unfortunately I will be withdrawing from the remainder of the clay season and will not be competing at this year’s Roland Garros,” Gibbs said on Twitter.

“Fortunately this form of cancer has a great prognosis and my surgeon is confident that surgery alone will be sufficient treatment.”

Gibbs also revealed her surgeon gave her permission to play in recent ITF events, which she says “served as a nice distraction”.

Roland Garros will host the second Grand Slam of the season from May 26 to June 9.
