Peaceful coexistence need of Massive global cyber attack creates chaos the hour in Nagaland: Dr. Shürho stroy it. Russia’s largest bank Sberbank said its systems “detected in time attempts to penetrate bank infrastructure”. Germany’s Deutsche Bahn computers were also impacted, with the rail operator reporting that station display panels were affected. In a statement, computer security group Kaspersky Labs said it was “trying to determine whether it is possible to decrypt data locked in the attack -- with the aim of developing a decryption tool as soon as possible.” On Saturday, a cyber security researcher told AFP he had accidentally discovered a “kill switch” that could prevent the spread of the ransomware. The researcher, tweeting as @MalwareTechBlog, said that the discovery was accidental, but that registering a domain name used by the malware stops it from spreading. Computers already affected will not be helped by the solution. But @MalwareTechBlog warned that the “crisis isn’t over” as those behind it “can always change the code and try again”. The malware’s name is WCry, but analysts were also using variants such as

WannaCry. Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre and its National Crime Agency were looking into the UK incidents, which disrupted care at National Health Service facilities, forcing ambulances to divert and hospitals to postpone operations. Pictures on social media showed screens of NHS computers with images demanding payment of $300 (230 pounds, 275 euros) in Bitcoin, saying: “Ooops, your files have been encrypted!” It demands payment in three days or the price is doubled, and if none is received in seven days the files will be deleted, according to the screen message. “ R a n s o m wa r e b e comes particularly nasty when it infects institutions like hospitals, where it can put people’s lives in danger,” said Kroustek, the Avast analyst. A hacking group called Shadow Brokers released the malware in April claiming to have discovered the flaw from the NSA, Kaspersky said. Although Microsoft released a security patch for the flaw earlier this year, many systems have yet to be updated, researchers said.

‘Ransomware’ hits Indian companies, govt. institutions

LONDON/NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): Cyber security experts rushed to restore systems on Saturday after an unprecedented global wave of cyberattacks that struck targets ranging from Russia’s banks to British hospitals and a French carmaker’s factories. The hunt was on for the culprits behind the assault, which was being described as the biggest cyber ransom attack ever. Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at the Helsinki-based cyber security company F-Secure, told AFP that the attack was “the biggest ransomware outbreak in history”, saying that 130,000 systems in more than 100 countries had been affected. A bunch of Indian companies including government establishments were also infected by the ransomware WannaCry. He said that Russia and India were hit particularly hard, in large part because the older Windows XP operating software is still widely

DDADU demands hike in passenger fare Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 3 (NPN): Reacting to the recent directive issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Dimapur concerning seating capacity in autorickshaws, the Dimapur District Autorickshaw Drivers Union (DDADU) has demanded a hike in passenger fare so as to make up for what they described “the loss incurred due to the RTA directive.” As a mark of protest, DDADU members said around 700 to 800 autorickshaws refused to ply for more than four hours on Saturday causing inconvenience to commuters. After an appeal by DDADU officials, the protesting autorickshaw drivers agreed to call off their protest later in the afternoon. Pointing out that autorickshaw drivers have been complying with the rules and regulations of the authority over the years, the union therefore requested the responsible authority to understand the grievances of the autorickshaws in order to control the situation. Failure on the part of the authority would compel the union to impose stern action, DDADU cautioned.

State agencies and major companies around the world were left reeling by the attacks which blocked access to files and demanded ransom money, forcing them to shut down their computer systems. “The recent attack is at an unprecedented level and will require a complex international investigation to identify the culprits,” said Europol, Europe’s policing agency. The attacks, which experts said affected dozens of countries, used a technique known as ransomware that locks users’ files unless they pay the attackers a designated sum in the virtual Bitcoin currency. The attacks apparently exploited a

MON, MAY 13: All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Nagaland, Dr. Jayakumar continued his tirade against the BJP, urging the people of Nagaland not to let a divisive force rule the state. Addressing Congress party men here at the Congress Bhavan Mon, Dr. Jayakumar asked as to how could the people let BJP, a divisive force, rule the state when Nagaland was a Christian state, where people read Bible everyday and where Churches are visible in every nook and corner of the state. With barely 180 days left before the declaration of election in the state, he urged upon the party men to remain strong and united to work with a single objective of bringing Congress back to power in the coming election. “If congress is not

French carmaker Renault was forced to stop production at sites in France and Slovenia, saying the measure was aimed at stopping the virus from spreading. In the United States, package delivery group FedEx acknowledged it had been hit by malware and said it was “implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible.” Russia’s interior ministry said that some of its computers had been hit by a “virus attack” and that efforts were underway to de-

brought back to power, Nagaland will become the land of satan and destroyed to the last,” he cautioned. Citing the example of eight Congress legislators who had defected to NPF, he lamented that Nagaland was one state where impossible things can become possible. He was however optimistic that the party would be able to work out a strategy to bring Congress back to power in the state. While accusing BJP of luring the voters with money, Dr. Jayakumr also expressed sadness that most of the voters demand money and sell their fundamental rights during election. In this regard, he urged the party workers to uphold the principle of the Congress party and to stop the menace of the BJP. He pointed out that the responsibility of the Congress party was to bring change and check corruptions.

Also addressing the party workers, NPCC president, K. Therie said though the Congress MLAs had defected to NPF, the party has over three lakhs voters intact. He informed that the NPF would be divided and their vote share would be reduced in the 2018 general election giving a fair chance for the Congress to form the government. He also accused the BJP and RSS of trying to convert all religion to Hinduism and to introduce hindi, Hindu cultural and religion in the school books. He cautioned that after 20 years our culture, identity, custom and Christianity would vanish if BJP and its alliance come to power in the state. Claiming that Congress was the only political party with a secular ideology, Therie alleged that the NPF was a political wing of the BJP and the RSS in the state.

KO H I M A , M AY 1 3 (NPN): Emphasizing on peaceful coexistence as the need of the hour, Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu on Saturday called upon the Naga leaders to leave aside their political differences and to work for the welfare of the people. The chief minister pointed out that “elections would be held as long as Naga people were under the Indian constitution.” In this regard, he called upon the people to learn to live peacefully with each other. Addressing the ‘Kerunyi’ festival, organized by Kohima Village Council, as chief guest here at KVC hall, Dr. Liezietsu said “we cannot afford to have personal rivalry or enmity due to the differences of political ideologies during elections.” Because of political rivalry, we should not have any personal grudges against each other, but to work in hand for the welfare of the people, the chief minister stated. It may be mentioned that this was Dr. Liezietsu’s maiden official visit to his native village after becoming the chief minister of Nagaland. Addressing the village leaders, the chief minister reminded that it was God’s plan for him to become the chief minister and thanked the villagers for the support and help towards building a peaceful atmosphere.

Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu (NP)

Leave aside political differences and work for the welfare of the people He also sought the cooperation of the village leaders and landowners saying Kohima village, reportedly the biggest village in Asia, should be more co-operative and accommodative with any kind of developmental activities carried out by the state government. As Kohima being the state capital, he said the land owners should also avoid creating any kind of hindrances as far as welfare programmes of the government was concerned, but to contribute positively and facilitate them. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, while thanking and appreciating the land donors for the upcoming Nagaland Medical College at Kohima, requested the other land owners who were yet to donate their lands to judiciously donate for the welfare of our future generations.

Home minister Y. Patton in his brief address wished the gathering on the occasion of “Kerunyi” festival. Patton also lauded Kohima village for their cooperation and for sending a dynamic leader like Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu to work for the people of the state. Earlier, Vilie-o Rutsa speaking on the significance of the Kerunyi festival stated that the festival was observed to make one self prepared and ready to begin the year-long cultivation. The programme was chaired by Kohima Village Counicl (KVC) chairman, Dr. Neiphi Kire. Welcome address was delivered by P. Khel chairman, Kruyie Pienyü while invocation prayer was pronounced by Rev. Khrieneilie Sachü and vote of thanks was delivered by T. Khel chairman, Thepfuvilie Suohu. Highlights of the festival included presentation of folk and traditional songs by all the four Khel representatives. Traditional blessing to the chief minister was done by Medo-o Keretsü head GB Kohima village. Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu was accompanied by School Education and SCERT minister, Yitachu, Forest, Wildlife and Climate Change minister, Imkong L. Imchen; parliamentary secretary Vikho-o Yhoshü; parliamentary secretary Pukhayi, Dr. Nicky Kire, MLA; government officials, Kohima village members and well wishers.

ENCSU reminds DoHE to address demands DIMAPUR, MAY 13 (NPN): Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has reminded the Department of Higher Education (DoHE) to address its demands at the earliest, saying it was not satisfied with the response received from the former director, higher education. In a press release, ENCSU chairman, Longre Chang, and joint secretary, Nokchem Angth, said that the union would not allow any colleges within its jurisdiction to function without sufficient teachers from next semester. E N C S U a c k n ow l edged posting of principal at Wangkhao College, Mon and Yingli College, Longleng, but appealed for posting a principal who could physically and practically be present in the college. Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t Yingli College was running without the principal

for more than two years, the ENCSU said it cannot accept the posting of designated principal at Yingli College, Longleng transferred from Sao Chang College, Tuensang. The union said that during its visit to Sao Chang College, the principal was found absent from his bounded duty reportedly due to poor health. The union has, therefore, urged the government and the department to make an alternative arrangement at the earliest possible. Further, the union reaffirmed its demand that the department should take disciplinary action against the irregular teaching staffs and the action taken report be made known to the union. The union also demanded immediate cancellation of all the teachers on attachment. ENCSU reiterated that the new building of Zisaji

Presidency College, Kiphire should be electrified and all the basic necessity be provided before shifting to the new site. Acknowledging the department for providing the brand new bus to Zisaji Presidency College, Kiphire, the union has, however, appealed for sanctioning the required buses to all the colleges as mentioned in its memorandum. ENCSU has further appealed to the government and the department to take immediate action in constructing staff quarter and the border fencing. It said that failure to utilize the land judiciously has led to rapid increase in land encroachment. ENCSU said when the citizens of Eastern Nagaland have sacrificed their land for the sake of development and education, the government and the department cannot do anything good to the

people of the Eastern Nagaland especially when it comes to higher education. Expressing pain at the plight of students suffering during examination due to non-completion of the syllabus, the union said that colleges have to run with single teacher or even without a teacher in some subject (department) whereas the same department/subject in colleges from other districts were being manned by excess teachers. ENCSU maintained that chemistry department and political science department of Sao Chang College was run by only one teacher each and no teacher for computer science. It said that the same problem was with all the four government colleges. In the light of the above, the union has called upon the government and the department to “deliver justice to the underdeveloped people.” K Y M C

Liangsi lamented that the ability of women to contribute in peace building was sometimes not considered. plantation drive in Pughoboto

Minister Y Vikheho Swu planting a tree sapling at the site of Pughoboto Mini Secretariat on May 12. KOHIMA, MAY 12: Continuing the fight against the affects of global warming and climate change, Nagaland minister of Road and Bridges, Y. Vikheho Swu initiated massive plantation drive in all the 24 villages in his assembly constituency under Pughoboto sub-division of Zunheboto district on May 12. This is the second consecutive year that Swu not only distributed tree saplings to all the villages but has been personally engaged in planting different species of tree saplings. “Last year 17,000 sap-

lings were planted throughout the sub-division and this year 10,000 tree saplings have been distributed for plantation in every village under Pughoboto sub-division as part of the Green Pughoboto project through the Local Area Development Fund,” the minister said while planting a tree at ongoing construction site of Pughoboto Mini Secretariat. The plantation drive was to meet the challenges of climate change and also an initiative to transform Pughoboto into the most beautiful green area in the state, he said.

“Nature is the greatest gift of the God to mankind and therefore we should plant trees to protect the nature. Everyone should take the responsibility to preserve, conserve and plant trees,” the minister appealed. Joining the plantation drive, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Pughoboto, Avelu Ruho and her staff also planted tree saplings at Pughoboto Mini Secretariat. People from different walks of life, including church, women group, youths, students and NPF farmer’s wing participated in the mass plantation drive.

Head and neck cancer-an Indian cancer

DIMAPUR: 90% of oral cancers can be prevented on quitting tobacco, alcohol, betel nut and faulty sexual habits (oral sex). Early cessation is important because risk gradually decreases and reach normalcy after 10-15 years. Early diagnosis has better cure rates. Surgical treatment targets on improved survival with good cosmetic and functional outcome. Post treatment regular follow-up is needed to diagnose second primary. This vital information about the world’s most dreaded disease-cancer- was shared by Dr. Kannan Subbiah, senior ENT/ Head &

Neck Onco surgeon from Apollo Hospitals, Chennai at a Press meet in Dimapur on Saturday. Dr. Kannan said cancer of the mouth often begins as a small ulcer or lump on the tongue, cheek and gums. Historically at least 75% of those diagnosed are tobacco users. Those who both smoke and drink, have a 15 times greater risk of developing oral cancer than others, he added. According to him, 35% of the total cancers in India were from the head and neck region as compared to 5-8% in the western world. India accounts

for more than one-fourth of world’s head and neck cancer burden hence aptly being named as an “Indian Cancer”. “The most common etiological factors for head neck cancers are tobacco (smoking and smokeless) and alcohol,” informed the doctor. Dr. Kannan highlighted the symptoms of head and neck cancers and also the treatments available. On various treatments available Dr Kannan said; “Early stage cancers are treated by single modality mostly surgery. Advanced stage cancers are treated by multimodality treat-

ment - surgery followed by radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Surgery is the main form of treatment for head and neck cancers. Numerous surgical approaches have been developed that permit preservation of organ function and facial appearance to a far greater degree than was possible in the past. He further said that “when found early, oral cancers have on 80 to 90% survival rate. Unfortunately at this time, majority are found as late stage cancers, and this accounts for the very high death rate of about 45% at five years from diagnosis.

BJP a divisive force, says Dr. Jayakumar

(From p-1)

When asked on the reports of Dr. S.C. Jamir, Governor of Odisha, being backed by RSS as the vice presidential Candidate, Dr. K. Jayakumar said he learnt of such development only through local media. Admitting that he was not aware whether Dr. S.C. Jamir had accepted the offer or not, Dr. Jayakumar said

“considering the Naga’s heritage, belief and territorial coverage in this part of the country and the background of Mr Jamir, who have come from a secular party, in no way will it will be an honor to the Nagas’ if he accepts the proposal. He should decline for the sake of the Nagas as such suggestion was coming from the Fascist and the casteism party, he said. On the other hand, Therie said

accepting the proposal of the BJP & RSS to become the Vice President by any Christian society would be one of the greatest disgrace, especially from a state like Nagaland. He pointed out that the BJP and RSS would be using the Christian vice president as a flag post to signify that Christians were also participating in the RSS mission. “I cannot accept that as a Christian and as president NPCC,” Therie said.

Students along with the organizing committee at the career counselling programme. (NP) Staff Reporter D I M A P U R , M AY 1 3 (NPN): Career counselling programme was held Saturday, at Town Hall, Dimapur under the theme “Name your career” with parliamentary secretary of Economics and Statistics, Tovihoto Ayemi as chief guest and Dr. Akumtoshi MD paediatrics as guest of honour. Speaking at the programme, chief guest lauded the organizers for coming up with such programme at the perfect time of NBSE results being declared and when students and parents alike were confused as to which branch of career to opt for. Tovihoto lamented the lack of awareness in career

guidance in Naga society where people simply opted for any career without identifying the person’s interest or talents. He maintained that the culture of going to career counsellors was nonexistent in the state except for attending occasional seminars as minimal. However, “if you want to see your career moving in the right direction then career guidance is of utmost importance since it is very essential for success” he said. Everybody want to be successful in life but do not get the right guidance at the right time, therefore he asked the students to take advantage and grab the opportunity to make the right choice of career which

would help them towards a bright future. He asserted that in this edge-cutting competitive era, the importance of career guidance could never be underestimated. He said almost every Naga wanted a government job and hardly gave any importance to other career options. He encouraged people to have open minds as there were multiples of other career prospects. Ayemi also mentioned that when government was not in a position to provide employment to every individual, we needed to defy the culture of seeking only government jobs and explore other avenues. Career guidance being a very important aspect of a student’s life which could

make or break their career, he encouraged the counsellors as it was an onerous task that they give the right guidance to the needy students by identifying their fields of interest. Quoting Darwin theory “survival of the fittest”, guest of honour Dr. Akumtoshi asserted that the theory stood true even in this generation. He charged the combine with trying to disrupt the unity among tribals of the state for achieving its “narrow” political gains by seeking to rope in tribal “extremist” parties like the Indigenous People’s Front of India and Indigenous Nationalist Party of India. Referring to the BJP’s reported challenge to Sarkar that he hands over chit fund cases to CBI to prove his “honesty”, Karat said, “The BJP is living in a fool’s paradise, if it believes it can tarnish the image of Sarkar.” Karat sought to deflate the BJP’s reported allegation, saying Sarkar had written to the Centre immediately after the exposure of the chit fund scams namely - Saradha, Rose Valley and others - demanding a probe by the central agency into the cases. The CBI, he added, is investigating five out of the total 37 cases in this connection.

I M P H A L , M ay 1 3 : Manipur chief minister N Biren Saturday urged media to take a positive role in making Manipur an advanced state of the country. Ta l k i n g t o m e d i a during a dinner hosted by him at Imphal Hotel, the journalist turned politician stressed the need for sensible reporting on certain issues. “Issues are everywhere. If media goes on giving focus on crimes, it may create a wrong image of the state outside,” said the chief minister. The media, therefore, needs to tone down its reporting on crime and other issues which create a wrong image of the state and give more emphasis on development issues and prominent space in the front page, he observed. Biren also lauded the role played by the media in ending the nearly fourmonth-old UNC sponsored economic blockade on the national highways.

Andhra police FREE ADMISSION book nine persons MISSION HOME HOSTEL Near Bethesda Hr. Sec. School for Rs 569 cr scam V isakha pat nam , May 13 (IANS): Andhra Pradesh police have registered a case against nine persons for fraudulently sending Rs 569 crore abroad through fake companies. On a complaint by the Income Tax Department, the police in this coastal city registered a First Information Report (FIR) and sent search parties to Kolkata and other places to nab the accused. Deputy Commissioner of Police Naveen Gulati told reporters here on Saturday that one Vaddi Mahesh, his father Vaddi Srinivas Rao and two other accused formed 12 bogus companies to facilitate transfer of funds and reporting turnovers. They opened 30 accounts in different banks in Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Kolkata and other places. Of the Rs 680 crore domestic remittances in these banks accounts, Rs 569 crore was sent to five foreign companies in China, Singapore and Hong Kong. “The total transaction is fraud and the money was sent without paying tax and by producing fake certificates,” Gulati said. An income tax official had lodged a complaint against the accused with MVP Colony police station. The preliminary investigation revealed that foreign remittances were meant for purchase of customised software but no software was ever imported. The accused include two chartered accountants Prasanta Kumar Roy Barman and Praveen Kumar Jha, both residents of Kolkata. They allegedly helped the accused by providing fake certificates which along with fake foreign invoices were submitted to the banks. “Prima facie, it is black money and it appears to be a hawala like transaction,” the officer said, adding that it was a complicated case and more clarity is expected by Monday or Tuesday. Mahesh, Srinivas Rao, both natives of Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh but settled in Kolkata along with Achanta Harish and Achanta Rajesh of West Godavari district established 12 bogus companies.

of freedom but we are doing operations in a way to restrict their movement and subsequently neutralize them,” the GoC told reporters. Several areas of south Kashmir, including Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian, have been witnessing repeated militant attacks on security forces in the recent months. There have also been a number of incidents of weapon-snatching and stone-pelting, including by college students. Responding to questions, Maj Gen Raju said there are more than 100 terrorists in south Kashmir and most of them are locals. “We are also ensuring that new recruitment is prevented and preventive operations are taking place wherein we are engaging

restriction on taste of food of a citizen which cannot be permitted. Citing an apex court guideline, it was also pointed out that in compliance whereof the central and state governments had released funds for establishment of modern abattoirs but the present government was lagging behind the steps. Opposing the pleas, advocate general Raghvendra Singh and state’s special counsel L P Mishra had strongly submitted that it was not obligation of the state government to establish the slaughter houses. It was argued that the Food Safety Act 2006 had overruled other provisions under which licenses for slaughtering and renewal of meat shops were granted.

with the families of the people and the students who are likely to get onto this track. “So, a joint effort is being made by the army, the police and the civil administration to ensure that this scourge of militancy does not spread,” the Army commander said. He said while the situation is “calm in general”, there is “little bit of agitation” in few educational institutes which leads to some violence. “...The life is going on normally, the schools are functioning normally in 95 per cent of the schools. I visited many government schools. It is only a few schools where there is a little bit of agitation which leads to some violence because of the stone pelting that they are doing and because of the reaction of the police,” Maj Gen Raju said. He said students are filled with enthusiasm and want to move forward in life in which the Army would provide them every support. “There are four to five colleges, 40-50 students who create ruckus. Some virus has entered them which we have to remove. I am sure that the summer will be peaceful,” he added.

consider the aspects set forth in the verdict and formulate the policy in the matter of slaughtering and licensing to meat shops. A bench of justices A P Sahi and Sanjai Harkauli passed the directives on a bunch of writ petitions filed individually. The petitioners had demanded that their meat shop licences which had expired on March 31 be renewed. They had pleaded that the state in fact wanted to close slaughter houses and therefore it issued an order on March 22. The petitioners submitted that the state act has forced the closure of meat business which is constitutional right. The act of the state indirectly put unreasonable

BEHIBAGH (KASHMIR): More than 100 terrorists are active in south Kashmir which has witnessed a spurt in terror activities recently and operations are under way to neutralise them, a top Army officer said here on Saturday. Major General BS Raju, General Officer Commanding (GoC) of Victor Force which is responsible for security in south Kashmir, also said that the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police are trying to dissuade the local youth from joining militancy by engaging with their families. He said a full scale cordon-and-search operation, like the one conducted in Shopian recently, will be carried out only in places where the Army’s operations are hampered. “We get to listen that the situation is out of control. But it is very much in control,” said Raju here after visiting the family of Lt Ummer Fayaz, who was abducted and killed by terrorists three days back while on leave. “I am aware of the presence of the terrorists in the area (south Kashmir) and I must tell you that because of the high vegetation that is there, they are having slight amount

LUCKNOW: The Allahabad high court on Friday said it is an obligation of the Uttar Pradesh government to establish and run modernised slaughter houses in the state and directed authorities to issue new licences as per rules. Considering that licences for meat shops and slaughter houses can be granted under the Food Safety Act 2006, the Lucknow bench of the high court in its interim order asked the applicants of licences to apply accordingly. In case the local authorities find any difficulty in doing so, they can approach the state government for proper guidance, it said. The court also directed a High Powered Committee to

Attari, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday unfurled a 107—foot tall tricolour near the Indo-Pak border at Attari-Wagah here. After unfurling the flag at the integrated checkpost, the Minister of State for Home told reporters he was here to take stock of security arrangements, besides inspecting the checkpost and meeting with BSF officers. The minister said he would also interact with traders engaged in import and export business with Pakistan and hear out their trade-related problems. Answering a query on the frequent incidents of stone pelting incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, Rijiju blamed “some elements sitting in Pakistan” which have created WhatsApp groups to create trouble. “Indian intelligence agencies are monitoring them very closely and will shortly do the needful in this regard,” said Rijiju. On the killing and mutilation of two soldiers, he said the government would always extend support to their families. Rijiju said a scanner will be installed at the checkpost to scan goods being imported from Pakistan.

Gazipur slaughter house.

The state counsel pleaded that if the aspirants of licences applied as per norms, the same can be issued after scrutiny. The bench had heard the matter for many days and finally issued its interim verdict. Considering the provisions of different local acts and government order issued during last government, the bench said that establishing and running slaughter houses were responsibility of the state. It relied on government orders places before it in which it was evident that the state had earlier issued fund for the purpose. “The disbursement of funds under the said head has been categorically described in relation to several projects with substantial amount of funding by the central government. It is thus clear that not only the central government but the state government as well in the past has undertaken these steps in order to ensure the running of modernised slaughterhouses either by improving upon the existing slaughterhouses or setting up of new modern slaughterhouses,” held the bench .

EVMs under scanner

O

nly a test conducted in presence of representatives of all political parties including eminent citizens to ascertain whether the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) can be tampered or not will eventually decide its fate. With a hue and cry over the reliability of EVMs raised by various political parties after the recent state assembly elections, the onus is now with the Election Commission of India to respond positively and to the satisfaction of all. Since 2011 doubts have arisen over the vulnerability of electronics voting machines (EVMs), eloquently expressed at that time by BJP backroom strategists such as Subramanian Swamy and GVL Narasimha Rao. But they swallowed their objections after the BJP’s stunning victory in 2014. The suspicion against EVM again resonated after the recent UP assembly election when the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party raised concerns over suspected tampering of the machines. The chorus of concerns spread as almost all opposition parties began to question the veracity of the machines. In the light of the AamAdmi Party questioning the results of the recent Punjab assembly elections, the ECI could no longer evade the challenge in the face of rising suspicions even if they may not be considered as strong reason. Conducting a mock poll on an EVM machine, AAP minister Bhardwaj demonstrated how despite giving two votes each to various parties, the finally count showed that the votes of some parties had been transferred to one party. To prevent the doubts from spreading, the Election Commission dared AAP to participate in its upcoming ‘Hackathon’, which will be held at the end of May. The war of words continue with AAP maintaining that the ECI has backtracked on the hackathon and put forward an absolutely wrong definition of a hackathon. One AAP spokesman said “They want us to tamper the EVM in in-situ conditions, which will not be a hackathon… This is exactly what the EC had done in 2009. If we are not allowed to open up the EVM then how will it be hacked? They should have made it an opportunity to prove that EVMs cannot be tampered with.” The AAP conducted tests gave a fillip to the charges of EVM tampering. AAP said tampering was possible with a secret code that is assigned to every constituency. It said the before voting begins the election officials show that everything is done fairly but after 10 am, they activate the code, which ensures that all votes cast thereafter would go to a particular candidate. When voting was done through ballot papers, there were hardly much serious allegations of fraud except when it involved booth capturing. It is incomprehensible why the EC did not quickly follow up on the suggestions given by the Supreme Court and high courts in 2013 to incorporate the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in all EVMs. The tremendous leaps in technology may have left the superannuated bureaucrats who make up the EC stumped for answers. For the sake of democracy it is hoped the ECI will ensure that doubts about machines is resolved through open and fair tests conducted.

DailyDevotion The Habit of Keeping a Clear Conscience …strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. —Acts 24:16 God’s commands to us are actually given to the life of His Son in us. Consequently, to our human nature in which God’s Son has been formed (see Galatians 4:19), His commands are difficult. But they become divinely easy once we obey. Conscience is that ability within me that attaches itself to the highest standard I know, and then continually reminds me of what that standard demands that I do. It is the eye of the soul which looks out either toward God or toward what we regard as the highest standard. This explains why conscience is different in different people. If I am in the habit of continually holding God’s standard in front of me, my conscience will always direct me to God’s perfect law and indicate what I should do. The question is, will I obey? I have to make an effort to keep my conscience so sensitive that I can live without any offense toward anyone. I should be living in such perfect harmony with God’s Son that the spirit of my mind is being renewed through every circumstance of life, and that I may be able to quickly “prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2 ; also see Ephesians 4:23). God always instructs us down to the last detail. Is my ear sensitive enough to hear even the softest whisper of the Spirit, so that I know what I should do? “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God…” (Ephesians 4:30). He does not speak with a voice like thunder— His voice is so gentle that it is easy for us to ignore. And the only thing that keeps our conscience sensitive to Him is the habit of being open to God on the inside. When you begin to debate, stop immediately. Don’t ask, “Why can’t I do this?” You are on the wrong track. There is no debating possible once your conscience speaks. Whatever it is— drop it, and see that you keep your inner vision clear.

Post-mortem A letter from a mother Mothers – An Irreplaceable Asset

A

Letter from a Mother has been on my mind for a long time and this month seemed to be the perfect month for me to write, since my son has just completed a year. A letter seems to me the perfect way to let my loved ones know how I feel about them. Through this letter, I want to tell my dear husband, my mother, my child and the other mothers about the joy of being a Mother and what an important and lovely part they play in my life. Firstly I address this letter to the most beautiful part of my life, my better half, my soul mate and my best friend. Rarely do I tell you how I enjoy this journey with you and so I want to tell you that over the years our friendship has developed beautiful strands of strength, grace and love which we will cherish as the years roll by. Everything may not be perfect, but let us remind each other of the moments that took our breath away and accommodate and give each other the space and love we can as we grow old together. As a mother today, I understand how it is so essential to have the love respect and understanding of our husband, because when our days are blue you give us a reason to smile, through your gentle words and touch. We feel loved by your gaze and are comforted by your assurances and reassurances that you are always there. You are our life support system, by your confidence in us we are able to overcome all odds. Your fatherly figure is very vital and important for the well being of the family, so cheers to you my dear!! My dear Mom and all the Mothers around, when we first held our babies in our arms, the joy is unspeakable and something we can only experience as we walk in the shoes of a mother. I write this letter to show my appreciation and pay my respect to my mother and all the mothers and commend each and every one of you for the work that you have done which cannot be measured or rewarded. We give love that is unconditional, we hurt but we mask ourselves and try to put our best foot forward, we may not want to be in the driver’s seat but sometimes time and circumstances compel us to and we are bound to play our role. Mothers, as I address you, I speak to myself too, we have a vital and important role to play. My son just turned one and I am amazed at how quickly he learns things though one step at a time. A powerful lesson that we are taught here is that, it is in our hands how we nurture him and give him values and lessons for life . Spending quality time with your child, enjoying family meals and teaching and guiding him or her will

I

t is time to be thankful to our mother who has given so much and is still doing her very best that we feel loved and protected every day. There are some relations that go through the test of time and emerge as ever victorious. Among all such relations, the connection we share with our mothers is still really priceless as it is constantly being nurtured with love and kindness. There is no relation in this entire world that can be at par with the one we share with our mothers.

never go to waste but they are the real investments that we make. Motherhood is hard work without a pay, alas it is the toughest job to excel in as we are never the best since we keep on learning till the end. It is a lot of work and we may not always be appreciated, however we do because we care and want the best. All we ask of our spouse and others is to appreciate us and empathise with us. I don’t want you or the other mothers to sympathise with each other as it leads to self pity which is detrimental to our overall well being but yes encouragement and empathy is something that will be welcomed with wide open arms. Motherhood is patience and I realised how much I have toned down or how I have become patient since I had my first baby. It changes you and one is amazed at the transformation it has on you. Being a mother is a blessing as well as a responsibility that should not be taken lightly, as we are placed to raise up a child in the way God intended us to raise him or her. We give him horizons to dream and we teach them to value things that are beyond value. So mothers, as I remind myself, I would also like to take the opportunity to remind you not to take your role for granted but to strive to bring out the best in your children. Lastly, my dear child.. oh my precious one!! everyday spent with you is so beautiful and I don’t know whether you would remember any of this but the journey of growing up with you is so beautiful that it fills my heart with awe and wonder. Sometimes I wish that you never grow up and be as pure as you are. From your first babblings to your trying to being an adult to trying to be a hero and your curiosity just makes me so happy to be your mother. I confess at times I am angry, irritated and frustrated but when you smile at me and touch me with your little hands I forget all my pains and I just want to hold you in my arms. Dear child, as you grow up and become what God had placed you in this world to be, I want to remind you to love and give, learn all that you can, love with an open heart and be the best you can in whatever field you are placed in. Life is a collection of moments, my dear husband, my dear mother , my fellow mothers and my dear child, we live our life once, so let us learn to appreciate the little things in life and love the life God has blessed us with and give the best we can in the little time that we are here. Happy Blessed Mothers Day to all the Lovely Mothers Veronica Chishi Sanglir

I

whole heartedly agree with Abraham Lincoln when he said “all that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother”. This is one beautiful statement every mother would be proud of. My mother is my pride and I thank God for blessing me with a Godly mother. She is truly an asset to her children and an inspiration to everyone around her. I have no basic experience in motherhood, yet my mother is the reason for my strength and source through which I proudly pen this article on mothers. A mother is a giver of life and therefore biologically, socially and morally entrusted with several responsibilities. The world expects her to be the custodian of all round development of a child. Should there be a faulty behaviour in children, the blame lands on the mother’s shoulder. A mother with a genuine personality always disciplines her children and put them into a habit of saying ‘SORRY’ and ‘THANK YOU’. “Having kids—the responsibility of rearing good, kind, ethical, responsible human beings—is the biggest job anyone can embark on” said Maria Shriver. When we view motherhood through economic window, raising children is one of the family’s investments. Our homes are all about the limited resources to meet multiple and sometimes competing demands amongst the children. Moreover, there is no household in the world that doesn’t need monthly necessities. Mothers with a good managing skill do wonders ending up with magical results in financial management. They also compromise their physical comforts and work round the clock. Valerie Young in her article “What’s A Mother’s Worth?” mentioned “Every mother saves her family, thousands of dollars by performing services in unpaid domestic labor for free” All mothers are educators irrespective of being literate or illiterate. Let it be learning new words or learning by doing, anything to do with learning something new is education. My mom is a retired Teacher and I remember the way she checked our school work and homework every evening during my primary schooling. I grew up watching her tolerance and patience as she held the hands of my younger ones to be able to write better during preprimary schooling. She delivered equal justice to her students in school and students at home (we her children). Where there is a mother’s prayer, things deemed impossible becomes possible, we are able to conquer the highest

mountains and assured God’s protection and safety from all the dangers posed by this world. This is my personal life experience from being blessed with a dedicated, prayerful and faith abiding mother. My mother is a priceless gift and a wonderful asset of all assets. Modern homes have many working mothers with a skill to balance between family and profession. We salute all the working moms and appreciate the way they organise things and live a strong social life too. We also have many social workers who are contributing to society much more than the husbands. “An educated woman with ambition is able to give intellectual companionship to her husband, help in making decisions about finances and education for the children, self-reliant, independent, and even contributes to the family’s income,” says Dr Snehal Shah. According to the survey conducted by TimesJobs. com, “over 60% of the surveyed organisations believe that working mothers are an important asset to them”. You may be a mother or a step-mother but Mother’s Day is your day. Who doesn’t want to have biological mother to love and to be loved? It breaks our heart to see video clips of inhuman acts and ill treatment meted out by some step-moms. The significance of Mother’s Day may not hit you hard if you do not have the heart of a mother to those children. Talk to yourself as to why God has placed them in your hand. You are NOT AN ASSET to them if they do not get unconditional love and care from you. There is a belief that a silent prayer of an orphan travels to God which is more powerful than anything we could ever think of. I believe step-moms would have manifold blessings if stepchildren find solace in them. There are definitely some ungrateful kids in the society. When your biological mother abandoned you for whatever reason, you definitely had the tag of ‘unwanted child’ the day you were born. That was the moment your parents welcomed you with open arms and immense love and held you so close to their hearts. Remember the years of your childhood and your mother’s motherhood, the pain she had undergone to make you her own. She didn’t care about your DNA because you are connected to her through heart and soul. God knows that she is your asset. To me, if someone asks me the definition of a mother, I would say a mother is the one who raised

Mother’s Day : The most special day of all

Mothers are the perennial source of love and comfort for us. We feel really blessed because God has created a Guardian Angel for us in the form of our mothers. She is the one who rises before every family member and go to bed after everyone has gone to sleep. We certainly cannot negate the importance of mother’s nurturing quality from our lives. It lays the foundation of our growth and development throughout our life on every dimension. Many Philosophers are of the view that Mother is the first school for the

child and it is quite true as she is the teacher and guide for us . She teaches the life’s most valuable lessons in terms of unconditional love, Kindness and many moral values. Our childhood memories are sweeter because of the presence of our mothers. Hence, in no way we can ignore the role of mother. On Mother’s Day, we get the opportunity to revert back to our mothers and show our gratitude towards her. There are lot many people around the globe who celebrate this day with huge sense of

ever we feel the need and she can encourage us when we feel down. So it is time that we realize her significance in our well being that is driving force that is nourishing and ever loving. Love your mother and Hug her tightly whenever you get the chance, show your love, care, affection, respect and appreciation as you commemorate one of the important days in their life. Even once in a year, make her feel loved and well appreciated. When was the last time you said “Thank you” to your mom for everything she has done?

When was the last time you tell her that you love her? Admit it, we seldom appreciate her efforts and deeds. We seldom see the value of our mom even though she’s around us. This Mothers Day, although we will not be able to repay all her kindness, let us make this day extra special for her. Let her know how thankful and grateful we are having them around. “A Ve r y H A P P Y MOTHER’S DAY To All the Mothers” B Mankam Loika Konyak, KUDA B’ Khel Dimapur

(From previous issue) The Naga National Movement had improved a lot, the achievements of the Nagas cannot be ignored. What had been achieved cannot be denied. India thought that Nagas cannot achieve anything and accordingly tried to suppress the aspirations of the Nagas. Despite the fact that Nagas lacked modern education in the beginning, their sense of self determination was very high. The Nagas respect the religion they followed and gave reverence to it. The Nagas consider other’s welfare first and had mutual respect of each other as a general principle for community living. All the benevolent principles of the Nagas were meticulously followed and maintained by our National Workers while

Accordingly, Indo-Naga Peace Talk was held at Chedema Peace Hall and Khensa Peace Hall. In February 1965, a Parliamentary Committee consisting of 14 MPs visited Kohima and the Federal Government of Nagaland hosted the Committee. After the departure of the Parliamentary Committee, the Indian Government tried to break the unity of the Nagas. They even gift their mothers with valuable items and gifts which show that everyone want to ensure that their mothers feel loved and appreciated for their effort. It makes a huge difference in our relation with our mother if we take the initiative to strengthen it and appreciate it. As we go through our lives, we need to take time to come close to our mothers. She is the only one who can give valuable guidance when-

you up. Robert A. Heinlein said “Being a mother is an attitude, not a biological relation.” When we observe some families around us, there is a dearth of moral values and ethics. A mother is definitely a mirror and her worth is reflected through the family’s living condition. It is true that there are signs of a mother doing a great job. A mother is the pillar behind every child’s success. Fortunate is a child whose mother is a channel of blessing, this is one classic example of an enviable asset because not all mothers carry the same weight or qualities. So also, there are enough signs that someone is a resourceful wife. I personally appreciate all self-made women, some of them I know are living with beautiful testimony. They were ambitious and already successful prior to meeting their husbands. Together, they make a great couple excelling in their endeavours today. I always believe a strong woman would make her husband great and successful in life. There is one online quote I really like that says “God and a good wife are two best things a man could have in life”. Multi-tasking the role as a home maker, wife, mother, teacher, mentor, nurse, chef, planner, builder, comforter, provider, counsellor, guide, bread winner, social worker, best friend and even that of a servant, a mother is one superstar who is to be bestowed with the highest respect and a lifetime of honour. Yet it is so painful to see some unfortunate wives not being considered as an asset by their husbands. Despite selfless efforts and sacrifices as his wife and a mother to his children, wives are sometimes rewarded with a recipe of disaster when there are three people in a marriage. Those evil women who have no respect for another woman and shamelessly raid marital homes should remember that MARRIAGE BED IS A SACRED ALTAR. On this auspicious occasion, I take this privilege to convey to all married men that one wife is an asset, but two is a liability. Your legally wedded wife deserves ‘undisputed respect’ for the reason that she is an important asset to you, your children, family and society. “A Mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place No One else can take”. Happy Mother’s Day 2017 to all mothers including moms in heaven. Vikali Shikhu, Unity Village, Dimapur

China, Pak ink pacts ahead of B&R summit

BEIJING/ISLAMABAD, MAY 13 (PTI): China and Pakistan today signed a number of infrastructure agreements to boost cooperation on the USD 46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, including for the development of the strategic Gwadar port, ahead of the two-day Belt and Road summit here. The pacts were signed in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang ahead of the much-publicised Belt and Road (B&R) Forum beginning tomorrow. The pacts deal with increasing bilateral cooperation within the framework of China’s ambitious Silk Road project, upgrading the main railway track between Karachi and Peshawar - referred to as ML-1 or Main Line-1, and an MoU for the establishment of a dry port in Havelian, Radio Pakistan reported. Three agreements were signed pertaining to economic and technical cooperation worth 3.4 billion yuan (about USD 490 million) for the strategic Gwa-

Altogether 4.9 million voters are eligible to cast their votes in the first phase of elections. The first round of elections in provinces 3, 4 and 6 and the second round in provinces 1, 2, 5 and 7 will be held on May 14 and June 14 respectively. The absence of elected representatives in the local bodies for more than 15 years obstructed development in the villages and towns across the country including the capital city Kathmandu. Local-level elections could not be held after 1997 largely as a result of the decade-long Maoist insurgency that claimed more than 16,000 lives. The elections will take place across Nepal after a gap of 20 years. They should be held in every five years but due to political instability, they were halted since May 1997. Local bodies remained ignored during the long transitional period even after the peace deal signed between the government and the Maoists in November 2006. Prime Minister Prachanda today appealed to the eligible voters to use their sovereign voting rights by casting votes.

Pope Francis makes Fatima child shepherds who ‘saw Virgin’ saints FATIMA, MAY 13 (AFP): Two young, barely-literate shepherds who had visions of the Virgin Mary 100 years ago in Fatima, a Portuguese site now a global draw for pilgrims, were declared saints today by Pope Francis. In an emotional outdoor service on a packed, 400,000-capacity esplanade at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, Catholic worshippers from all over the world sang and looked on, some crying, while many more watched the canonisation on giant screens from adjacent streets. “We declare the blissful Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto saints,” the Argentine pontiff said in front of the white basilica where the siblings are buried, two giant portraits of the little shepherds hanging in the background. When the two impoverished siblings first reportedly had visions of the Virgin Mary 100 years ago on the spot where the sanctuary now lies, they were likely far from imagining

they would one day join the ranks of prominent saints like Mother Teresa. The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared six times between May and October 1917 to Jacinta, then 7, Francisco, 9 and their cousin Lucia, 10. She apparently shared three prophesies with the trio at a period marked by the ravages of World War I, which the Church believes included a vision of hell and a warning of a second major conflict. DIMAPUR MISSION HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

WASHINGTON, MAY 13 (IANS): Personal letters seized in the raid that killed former Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden revealed that his son wants to carry on his murderous ideology and is bent on “avenging his dad’s death”, according to a former FBI agent. “That son today is poised to lead a stronger, larger Al Qaeda,” Ali Soufan, who was leading the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s probe of the terror group after the September 11, 2001, attacks, told CBS News in an interview. Soufan described a letter from the son, Hamza, that was collected in the raid and now declassified. “He tells Osama (in the letter) that he remembers ‘every look...every smile you gave me, every word you told me’”. Hamza would be about 28 now and wrote the letter when he was 22 and had not seen his father in several years.

TOUNA EL-GABAL, MAY 13 (AFP): Egyptian archaeologists have discovered 17 mummies in catacombs in Minya province, south of Cairo, the antiquities ministry announced today. “We found catacombs containing a number of mummies,” said Salah alKholi, a Cairo University professor of Egyptology who headed the mission that made the discovery in the Touna el-Gabal district of the province in central Egypt. Burial shafts were found in the area and excavation work “revealed that these shafts led to a number of corridors inside a cachette of mummies”, the ministry said. It said in a statement that the cachette housed 17 non-royal mummies. Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Enany told a news conference held near the archaeological site in the desert that the discovery was “the first human necropolis found in central Egypt with so many mummies”.

MOTHER'S DAY POEM

When I travel 'round my homestead, in the beauty of the hanging orchards, the same old garden stands my Mum to welcome me, She never grows old, her cheeks still like fair roses. As she prays "hear my prayer heavenly father please bless my precious child", then I can see the wondrous evidence of God's unfailing presence, she glows with all the beauty of the rarest brightest gems, oh! What a splendoured miracle of a mother's prayer. Wisdom uttered from her lips that followed me always and clung to me all my life, her voice gives me comfort and peace. You've made my life full of delight, Always with compassion, care and calmness. My debt to you is undisputed Mother. Happy mother's day to my incomparable wife, the love of my life, a partner of all seasons in all my ups and downs, and a wonderful Mom to my sons. You are everything in my life and the joy of the family. The day we met, I was truly blessed. My mother in-law is the best, Her love is always wrapped in prayer to our family, never possessive of her daughter but always there with her calming presence, it is heartening to own her chastening love for she shares a love that knows no end. when I look across the years She has given us millions of smiles A happy mother's day. Happy mother's day to all my Sisters. The memories of yesteryears forever in my mind. I know the special bond that is impossible to describe but known only to those who share it. Sometimes l wonder how can you all know me better than i know myself. In my bad times your words are worth more than gold, in all my situations you are by my side with smiles and never frowns. He was wearing shorts and a T-shir t. When I saw the pictures I thought it was a rehearsal.” Ash has given songs like “I love you”, “Dil gira dafatan”,”Te amo”,”Aunty ji”,”Meherbaan” and “Alizeh”. Bajrang wins gold at Asian C’ship

Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia celebrates after winning gold at Asian Wrestling Championship at I G Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday. (PTI) New Delhi, May 13 (PTI): Bajrang Punia provided India’s first gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship as he posted a come-from-behind victory over Seungchul Lee of Korea in the men’s 65kg freestyle category. Sarita, though, had to settle for a silver medal in the women’s 58kg category. After registering a 6-2 win in the final, Bajrang celebrated by taking a victory lap with the tri-colour on his shoulders. In his gold medal

bout, the 23-year-old Indian conceded two points in the opening half to lag behind 0-2 at the break. However, Bajrang made a strong comeback in the second half as he did not allow his rival from Korea to earn any more points. He first pushed his opponent out of the mat to take one point and then took the Korean down for two more to lead 3-2. From there on, Bajrang displayed an attacking game and never let his rival come back into the

contest. He subsequently added three more points to his credit to wrap up the bout in style. Bajrang earlier made the final of his weight division with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Kukgwang Kim in the semifinal round. Putting up a brilliant show on his way to the gold medal round, Bajrang got the better of last edition’s Asian Championship gold-medallist Meisam Nassiri of Iran 7-5 in the quarterfinal after beating Uzbek wrestler Sirojiddin

Hasanov 4-3 in the qualification round. However, gold eluded Indian women wrestlers even as this was their best ever performance at the Asian Championship with six medals, including four silver and two bronze. In the 2003 edition, India had won a total of five medals that included two silver and three bronze. Sarita lost 0-6 to Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan. Having climbed down two kilograms to 58kg from 60kg after Sakshi Malik and she interchanged their respective weight categories, Sarita came up with a fine performance before going down tamely in her gold medal bout. In men’s 97kg category, Satywart Kadian, Sakshi Malik’s husband, went down in his repechage bout to lose out on a place in the bronze medal play-off. He lost to Batzul Ulziisaikhan of Mongolia 5-8 in a closely-fought contest. In the qualification round, Satywart lost to M a g o m e d I b r a g i m ov 2-2, but since the Uzbek grappler made the gold medal round, the Indian got a chance to fight in repechage.

Chelsea clinch Premier League title Sunrisers secure play-off spot Man City move up to third

Chelsea’s players and staff celebrate after beating West Brom 1-0 at the Hawthorns, West Bromwich, England on Friday. (AP/PTI) L o n d o n, M ay 1 3 (Agencies): Substitute Michy Batshuayi’s dramatic 82nd-minute winner gave Chelsea the Premier League title following a hard-earned 1-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Friday. The Belgian striker’s late goal at The Hawthorns took Antonio Conte’s side 10 points clear of secondplace Tottenham Hotspur, who have only nine points left to play for. It is Chelsea’s second title win in three seasons, their sixth in total, and comes at the end of former Juventus and Italy coach Conte’s first season as manager. Batshuayi, the understudy to Diego Costa, had only been on the pitch for seven minutes when he scored the winning goal his first in the league since August. Conte, who claimed three Serie A titles as Juventus coach, has restored Chelsea to the winners’ circle by rebuilding from the chaotic end of Jose Mourinho’s second reign. Two years after Mourinho led Chelsea to the title, Conte has stitched the London club back together after dressing-room unity unravelled under Mourinho during a horrendous title defence last season. The Italian’s side finally broke through West Brom’s stubborn resistance with eight minutes remaining and will now chase the double when they face Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 27. Chelsea were almost stunned inside 30 seconds

Financial support to ex-Olympians, intl players Hyderabad, May 13 (IANS): The Telangana government has re-introduced monthly financial assistance to former Olympians and national and international sports persons, some of whom are living in an indigent condition. Former Olympians Mohammed Zulfakaruddin, I.S.H.H. Hamed, former international player Bir Bahadur (all football) are among those who will receive Rs. 10,000 per month. Fo r m e r i n t e r n a tional hockey player K. Satyanarayana, Arjuna awardee Dennis Swamy (boxing), international kabaddi player G. Vasudev Yadav and national player A.C. Mallesham will also get Rs. 10,000 per month. Fo r m e r n a t i o n a l kho-kho player Chandra Prakash Biradar and former international Tennikoit player Sameera Begum will receive Rs.7,500 per month. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) reintroduced the scheme for financial assistance on the direction of Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K.T. Rama Rao.

as West Brom created the game’s first chance. Darren Fletcher’s lofted pass found Salomon Rondon and his flicked header drew a smart save from Thibaut Courtois. Chelsea quickly began applying pressure, but West Brom had a huge chance on the counter-attack when James McClean seized on a loose pass and raced 50 yards into Chelsea territory. But his attempted pass to Rondon was poor and the Venezuelan was crowded out by Chelsea defenders. Chelsea were becom-

ing frustrated in their efforts to breach the Baggies’ defence, but Fabregas nearly broke through with a snapshot that flashed half a yard wide of the far post. Chelsea might have broken the deadlock just two minutes into the second half when a powerful crossshot from Victor Moses was turned around the post superbly by West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster. Yet there was almost a shock for Chelsea when Rondon escaped a challenge from David Luiz and raced clear, only for Cesar Azpilicueta to make a vital,

saving challenge. Rondon then teed up substitute Nacer Chadli, who fired a shot narrowly wide for West Brom. But with eight minutes remaining, Chelsea finally struck as Azpilicueta broke into the West Brom box and crossed from the right for Batshuayi to force home from close range. Conte charged onto the field in celebration, while West Brom stewards were forced to eject three pitch invaders before the game could be completed and Chelsea could celebrate the title.

Manchester City are up to third In the Premier League table after a 2-1 win over champions Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. But it was a game full of controversial moments, with referee Bobby Madley allowing David Silva’s arguably offside opening goal to stand, missing a Fernandinho elbow on Marc Albrighton midway through the second half, then ruling out a Riyad Mahrez penalty for a double connection on the ball. Silva opened the scoring on 28 minutes from Leroy Sane’s cross, even though an offside Raheem Sterling made a move towards the ball and seemed to get into Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel’s eyeline. And Pep Guardiola’s side made it 2-0 on 34 minutes, as Gabriel Jesus sent Schmeichel the wrong way from the penalty spot, following Yohan Benalouane’s hack on Sane. But City’s usual penalty taker Yaya Toure may have something to say about the decision to hand the spot-kick taking duties to the 19-year-old. The Ivorian, 34 today, is 14 from 14 from the penalty spot, hasn’t scored at the Etihad Stadium for 14 months and is out of contract at the end of the season. Craig Shakespeare’s side halved the deficit on 42 minutes in spectacular style, as Shinji Okazaki thumped home a left-footed volley from Albrighton’s cross for his first goal in 24 matches. And Leicester could have netted an equaliser on 77 minutes, only to be denied by a remarkable moment of bad luck. Mahrez beat City goalkeeper Willy Caballero from the penalty spot, following Gael Clichy’s trip on him in the box, but the Algerian slipped while taking the spot-kick and the ball touched both feet. After coming through a nervy nine minutes of injury-time, City secured the three points that sees them move two points above Liverpool, and six points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

Mohammed Siraj (C) of Sunrisers Hyderabad celebrates the wicket of Gujarat Lions batsman Pradeep Sangwan on Saturday. (PTI) Kanpur, May 13 (Agencies): Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad booked their place in the IPL play-offs with an eight-wicket win over Gujarat Lions. Mohammed Siraj (4-32) and Rashid Khan (3-34) did the damage with the ball as the Lions lost all 10 wickets for just 43 runs to be bowled out for 154. David Warner led the Sunrisers response, making 69 not out from 52 balls, and shared a 133-run stand with Vijay Shankar (63no from 44 balls) to see his side home with 11 balls to spare. For much of the first innings, the Sunrisers looked likely to be facing a chase in excess of 200 as Gujarat openers Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan set off at a ferocious pace. Smith (54 from 33 balls) eventually fell to Khan late in the 11th over, with 111 on the board, but it was the wicket of Kishan (61 from 40 balls) two overs later than really triggered the collapse. The opener was the first of four wick-

ets to go down in the space of eight balls, including three in four balls, as Siraj and Khan each picked up two in an over. Siraj then ended his spell by bowling James Faulkner and Pradeep Sangwan in consecutive balls and another burst of three wickets in four balls ended the innings, Bhuvneshwar Kumar striking with the first two balls of the final over to wrap things up. Praveen Kumar claimed the early wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Moises Henriques as the Sunrisers made a ponderous start to the chase. Warner and Shankar began to accelerate as the innings reached the halfway stage but they required a large slice of luck to keep the partnership going as a thick Warner edge behind off Ankit Soni was missed by the umpire. From there the batsmen were rarely troubled, both passing 50 before Warner hit a lovely shot back over Soni’s head to seal the win from the first ball of the 19th over.
