Political parties brace up for Presidential poll NEW DELHI, MAY 11 (AGENCIES): Who will be India’s next President? This is the question that has set the country’s political corridors buzzing ahead of the presidential polls in July 2017. The Opposition is trying its best to put up a united candidate while the BJP is still considering names. One thing is clear: It is highly unlikely that all involved political parties will field a consensus candidate for the highest constitutional office in India. The election is a matter of course. A group of six political parties-- AIADMK (Tamil Nadu), BJD (Odisha), TRS (Telangana), YSRCP (Andhra Pradesh), AAP (Delhi & Punjab) and INLD (Haryana)-- cumulatively holds a 13% vote-share in the Presidential Electoral College and has the potential to make the contest interesting. These parties maintain equidistance from BJP as well as Congress in their domestic state-level political considerations. Theoretically, the contest between the ruling establishment and the opposition could become evenly poised if the Congress-led opposition manages to secure the

UNLF claims responsibility for IED blast Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAY 11: Manipur based rebel group, United National Liberation Front (UNLF) Thursday claimed responsibility for May 8 IED blast that killed two soldiers of the Territorial Army. It was an attack performed by cadres of Manipur People’s Army (MPA), the armed wing of the outfit, said a statement of the UNLF signed by its publicity director M Sak-hen. In the blast at Lokchao along the Imphal-Moreh section of NH-102, two soldiers were killed and two others severely wounded besides damaging the vehicle in which personnel of 165 TA battalion, B-coy were travelling. The attack was a part of the arm campaign against “colonial India and its occupational forces” for regaining the sovereignty of Manipur, UNLF stated. While expressing regret for the fatalities caused to Manipuris, UNLF accused Government of India of deploying its brethrens from Manipur to the Indian Occupational Force (IOF) in the state “as part of its hidden policy to kill each other among the brethrens.”

support of this flock of six parties. The opposition’s 35.47% votes combined with the 13.06% vote share of these six parties give them a total of 48.53% — just short of the NDA’s vote share of 48.64% in the presidential contest. However, the NDA needs the support of only one party — or two smaller ones from this unattached group — to cross the majority mark. With the BJP in the central government, the ruling establishment has better political heft to swing

According to Media Cell NVCO, the representation was submitted “considering the present scenario of corruption in the state”. In the representation, NVCO president, Kezhokhoto Savi, impressed upon the chief minister that establishing Lokayukta in Nagaland was ‘the need of the hour’. Through the representation NVCO had highlighted what corruption was, its prevalence in the state and why Lokayukta was required in the state. Corruption in the context of Nagaland(current corrupt practices in the state), according to the NVCO representation were:Abuse of power, nepotism, favoritism,

extortion, bribery, embezzlement, fraud and backdoor appointment. Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation informed the chief minister that Lokayukta, anticorruption ombudsman, was urgently required to be established in Nagaland in order to eradicate corruption in the state. Therefore, NVCO urged upon the chief minister of Nagaland to take necessary action and set up Lokayukta in Nagaland at the earliest. It may be mentioned that the term of select committee on the Nagaland Lokayukta Bill, 2015, which was formed in July 2016, was extended during the 14th session of the 12th NLA held on November 22, 2016. The committee was directed to present the report within six months. The select committee is head by parliamentary secretary Er. Levi Rengma as

chairman. Other members of the committee include parliamentary secretary, R. Tohanba; parliamentary secretary, C. Apok Jamir; parliamentary secretary, Pukhayi and advisor Dr. T M Lotha. To check the rampart corruption in the state and to bring the politicians and government officials under the anti-corruption scanner, the monsoon session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly tabled Nagaland Lokayukta Bill 2015 on July 21, 2015. Meanwhile, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Congress leader and former Speaker Meira Kumar, senior JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav and former West Bengal Governor Gopal Gandhi are among the names being considered by the opposition parties as their joint candidate for the presidential election. A top opposition leader said these four names have emerged as the top picks for the likely alliance of the several nonNDA parties, including the Congress, the Left, RJD and the JD (U) among others. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, JD(U) chief and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury, CPI’s D Raja, Yadav as well as other opposition leaders have held talks to evolve a consensus for pitting a joint candidate against the NDA’s choice. available for heart failure, but they are far from ideal. Initial interventions aim to treat the condition’s underlying cause - high blood pressure, for instance. They also aim to reduce symptoms, prevent further damage, increase lifespan, and improve quality of life. Certain medical procedures are available if lifestyle changes and medications are not adequate. These include a pacemaker, which can help both sides of the heart to contract in unison, or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, which corrects the heart’s rhythm if it starts to go off track. In some cases, a heart transplant is the only option, but the shortage of donors and the gravity of the operation makes this the last port of call. Using stem cells to repair the heart: Treatment options for heart failure are not ideal, and there is no good long-term solution. Even with the best care, heart failure can often be

fatal. Of course, regenerating the heart tissue itself would be an ideal option. Although far-fetched, this may one day be possible if the results of the current study are confirmed. Published this week in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the study investigates the use of muscle stem cells in repairing damaged hearts. The Japanese team had previously shown the technique’s potential benefits in a rat model, so now was the time to move into humans. In total, the team chose 27 patients with heart failure who had limited exercise capacity and were not responding to other treatments. Fifteen had ischemic cardiomyopathy, and 12 had dilated cardiomyopathy. This phase I trial involved making patches of cells from the patients’ own thigh muscles (the vastus medialis, specifically). These patches of so-called autologous somatic tissue-derived cells were then surgically glued

New Delhi, May 11 (Agencies): Hundreds of Aam Aadmi Par ty (AAP) supporters staged a protest outside the Election Commission of India office, demanding VVPATequipped electronic voting machines (EVMs) to be used in all future elections. According to The Hindu, crowds started arriving with placards and shouting slogans such as “Vote chori band karo [Stop stealing votes]” and “Loktantra ki hatya band karo [Stop the murder of democracy]”. Senior AAP leaders Gopal Rai and Somnath Bharti and MLAs Alka Lamba, Son Dutt, Sanjeev Jha and Bhawna Gaur were present. “Our primary demand is that all EVMs henceforth should be equipped with VVPATs. The people of this country deserve free and fair elections,” said Rai, party’s Delhi convenor. They have asked the Election Commission to announce the date of the hackathon at the all-party meeting that has been called on Friday.

Social media also picked up AAP’s protest against the EVM tampering. #SaveDemocracy was trending on Twitter on Thursday. Meanwhile, amid a raging debate over the reliability of EVMs, the Election Commission will meet representatives of 55 political parties tomorrow to put forth its stand on the issue. The Commission has convened the meeting of seven national and 48 state parties to discuss the reliability of EVMs after 16 parties urged it to revert to the ballot paper system claiming faith of people in the machines has eroded. The Commission is also likely to brief the parties about its planned EVM hacking challenge. EC had trashed AAP’s claim saying the ‘machine is a look-alike and not the ECI-EVM’. The date of the proposed challenge would be decided after the allparty meeting. Some parties have demanded they be allowed access to the machines used in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

1 house gutted; no fire services Chairmen in Mangkolemba, says MALT of DPDBs D I M A P U R , M AY 1 1 (NPN): Mangkolemba Ao Lanur Telongjem (MALT) on Thursday said that absence of Fire & Emergency services has posed danger to the citizens of Mangkolemba. According to MALT president Imjong Longkumer and general secretary Tinu Langu, the recent fire incident could have been averted had three been fire brigade in the area. On May 9, MALT said that one house was completely reduced to ashes after it caught fire at Mangko Ward in Mangkolemba. While no human life was lost, properties worth more than Rs. 25 lakh of rupees were gutted in the fire. They said that the incident could have been controlled and properties saved had three been fire brigade in the area. MALT said that

Treating heart failure with muscle stem cell patch LONDON, MAY 11 (AGENCIES): A new study tests a groundbreaking approach to treating heart failure. Using the patients’ own muscle stem cells, the researchers successfully patched up damaged hearts, yielding encouraging results. Stem cells may potentially offer a new treatment route for patients with heart failure. When the heart is no longer capable of pumping enough blood and oxygen to the body, it is referred to as heart failure. Around 5.7 million adults in the United States are experiencing heart failure, and 1 in 9 deaths in 2009 was caused by the condition. Heart failure can occur due to illnesses such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. It can also be brought on by certain behaviors, including smoking, eating a high-fat diet, not exercising enough, or being obese. Current treatments are

onto the surface of the heart’s left ventricle. Stem cells are sometimes used to entirely replace the body’s failing tissues. However, stem cells can also help to regenerate tissue in a second way - using the paracrine effect. The implanted tissue secretes factors that encourage the old tissue to behave differently, which is what happened in the current study. The implant helped the existing tissue to perform better, rather than taking over from it. Following the operation, the patients experienced no significant complications and, a year after the procedure, there were measurable improvements in their exercise capacity and heart function. The authors conclude: Although larger trials are needed and, according to the authors, “the therapeutic effects are modest,” this study demonstrates the intervention’s safety and future potential.

there was no fire station at Mangkolemba, a sub divisional head quarter for three ranges under Mokokchung district. They also cited examples, where in the past many houses and properties have been destroyed in the absence of fire brigade. MALT also said that police department at Mangkolemba also faces utmost hardship in mobility as there was no vehicle in the department. For official duties, police officers and personnel had to hire private vehicles. For this reason, versatility and swiftness in delivering security services by the police at Mangkolemba remained crippled. In this regard, MALT appealed the departments to facilitate the necessary facilities at Mangkolemba town at the earliest and provide adequate services to the public in times of accidents and danger.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 1 (NPN): In supersession of all earlier notification, the Governor of Nagaland has appointed 11 legislators as chairmen of the District Planning & Development Boards (DPDBs) with effect from May 5, 2017. As per the notification singed by Addl. CS & Development Commissioner, R. Benchilo Thong, the following MLAs have been appointed as the chairmen of the DPDBs (district-wise)- S.I Jamir (Dimapur), T.R. All ATM withdrawals not chargeable, clarifies SBI NEW DELHI, MAY 11 (IANS): Denying reports that all withdrawals from State Bank of India (SBI) ATMs will be chargeable from June 1, the largest public lender on Thursday clarified that the charge of Rs 25 is only for withdrawals from State Bank Buddy through ATMs. “Rs 25 per transaction charge is applicable only for mobile wallet app SBI Buddy using ATM. This is applicable only for State Bank Buddy customers,” the bank said in a statement. The clarification comes after the SBI in a notification indicated that all ATM withdrawals will be charged a fee of Rs 25, which was later replaced with the corrected notification. The bank said that the number of free withdrawals from ATMs remained unchanged. Jan-Dhan account holders with the SBI can avail of four free withdrawals in a month from ATMs. Normal savings bank accounts holders will continue to get eight free ATM transactions (five from SBI ATMs plus three from other bank ATMs) in metros and 10 free

transactions in non-metros (five from SBI ATMs plus five from other bank ATMs). Earlier in the day, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac told the media that the only reason he could see for this “mad” new rule was that the SBI was faced with mounting non-performing assets (NPAs) to the tune of Rs 1.67 lakh crore. “This is height of madness and irresponsibility. It would be interesting to find out the list of NPAs of the SBI… One wouldn’t be surprised if the majority (of defaulters) are found to be corporates.” “Just take a look at their (SBI) profits, it has dramatically come down. The charges have been levied to bring down their losses. This is something that even private sector banks would not dare think of doing,” said Issac. CPI-M’s Lok Sabha member M.B. Rajesh said, “This is outrageous and the central government is cheating the people. Ever since the demonetisation began, the Centre has been bullying people. This is going to be taken up, both within and out of Parliament very strongly.” K Y M C

Cong stage walk out in Assam Assembly

Guwahati, May 11 (PTI): The Opposition Congress today staged walkout from Assam Assembly after the Speaker rejected their prayer to move censure motion against Irrigation Minister Ranjit Dutta. Congress had submitted an application to the Principal Secretary of Assam Assembly after ending of the Session on Tuesday, but the Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami today rejected it by saying “it is not in order”. “I have received the application to move no confidence motion censuring the Irrigation Minister. This is a Special Session called to pass the GST Bill. The rule 133 must carry the copy of the motion, which is not the case here,” Goswami said. He also said that “One cannot bring a no-confidence motion against an individual minister but only against a council of ministers.” He, however, asked the Chief Minister to make a statement in the House before conclusion of the day’s business. On this, the opposition Congress staged walked out by creating noisy scene. Late in the afternoon, when all other businesses got over and the Special

Session was to be adjourned sine-die, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary rose to read out the government’s statement on behalf of the Chief Minister. Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said as the matter was not allowed to discuss, Congress would walk-out of the House again. After this, Patowary said: “Congress does not have the courage to listen to the statement. If I start talking about scams in Irrigation Department during Congress period, it will be a Mahabharata.” Claiming that Congress government never arrested any secretary-level official from the secretariat, he said the aim of the BJP-led government would be to make Assam corruption free. “The Irrigation Minister is responsible if he tries to protect the accused. But it is not the case here,” Patowary said defending his cabinet colleague. On March 28, Irrigation department Secretary Kujendra Doley was caught red handed while accepting bribe at his office chamber in the Secretariat by Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau of Assam Police. The sleuths had seized

Rs 54 lakh in cash from the Irrigation secretary’s office chamber and over Rs 11 lakh, passbooks of six bank accounts, LIC policies besides other documents during raids carried out at

his home. The Congress claimed in the House that Doley had confessed to the Police that the bribes were collected on the alleged instructions of the Irrigation Minister.

GST Bill passed in Assam

Assam Assembly today passed the GST Bill, paving the way for introduction of single taxation system by eliminating levies by multiple authorities. The Assam Goods and Services Tax Bill, 2017, which had been tabled on Monday, was passed unanimously by the Assembly in a three-day special session to pass the bill. “The GST will be a win-win for all the three stakeholders -- country, state and consumers,” Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Presently, inflation was likely to fall by 0.5 per cent and after fourth year, the state’s revenue would increase substantially and stabilise possibly after 10 years, he said adding that five/six taxes would be abolished. Corruption was likely to go down with introduction of GST as everything would be computerised and manual interference would almost be abolished, the minister said. Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that Congress supported the GST Bill, but there were some concerns like the fate of local small industries on the face of free flow of goods from outside after withdrawal of entry taxes. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal termed the day as historic. “Today is a historic day for Assam as the GST Bill has been passed in the state assembly which will go a long way in promoting the spirit of cooperative federalism in the country,” Sonowal said at a programme outside the Assembly. This would also ensure transparency in governance and lead to economic growth, he said.

Indeifinte bandh in Thoubal, Kakching dists called-off Correspondent I M P H A L , M ay 1 1 : The indefinite bandh in Manipur Thoubal and Kakching districts which commenced Wednesday has been called-off with effect from 5 pm Thursday evening. The Thoubal District MP Candidature Demand Committee gave the bandh call in the two districts pressing for nomination of a “deserving person” from the eight constituencies spread over Thoubal, Kakching and Jiribam districts as the Rajya Sabha MP. The committee announced calling off the bandh considering the inconveniences caused to the public, particularly students appearing exams. “We have decided to lift the bandh from 5 pm this afternoon after thorough consideration of the inconveniences likely to be faced by the public and the students’ community in particular,” chief convener of the agitating committee Y Thambal said. Addressing a news conference at Kakching district headquarters, the chief convener reiterated

that the demand for reservation of the state’s lone seat in the Rajya Sabha is a very rational one. The committee decided to shorten the strike to just 36 hours while taking a responsible stand for elimination of the impending hardships on students appearing for BSc, BCom and BA examinations and daily wage earners and small time traders, he added. However, democratic forms of agitations to pursue its demands will be continued, he added. Earlier, in the day, normal life in the two districts was hit for the second consecutive day as people in large number supporting the cause took to the streets and imposed the bandh. Nor mal vehicular m ove m e n t a l o n g t h e Imphal-Moreh section of NH-102 was also disturbed for the second day. Owing to the bandh, hundreds of vehicles coming from Moreh side were stranded beyond Pallel in Chandel district. However, with the lifting of the bandh, the vehicles have proceeded to Imphal, reports said.

Agartala, May 11 (IANS): The Tripura government is to raise the number of women police personnel to at least 30 per cent of the total strength, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said here on Thursday. “Currently, 13 per cent of the total police constables and 10 per cent of the total police force are women. Our government’s target is to raise the percentage to at least 30 in the next few years,” Sarkar said at the passing out parade of 144 newly-recruited women police constables. He said: “A few years ago, there were only one to two per cent women in the police force. The number of women police personnel and officers is being increased to deal with the rising crimes against women and other issues.” Sarkar, who holds the Home portfolio, asked the Director General of Police Akhil Kumar Shukla, and Chief Secretary (also

Home Secretary) Sanjeev Ranjan, both of who were present at the function, to initiate the process to create an exclusive women’s battalion of police. The Tripura government has already set up seven all-women police stations, and four more such police stations would be set up soon. The Chief Minister asked the police to organise various sports meets in each of the 76 police stations areas regularly to build close relations with the people. “Besides recr uiting additional women police personnel and setting up of all-women police stations, the state government has taken a series of steps to check crimes against women,” said Sarkar, who completed a record 19 years as Chief Minister of the northeastern state. To boost community policing, PRAYAAS committee has been formed in

each police station area to deal with policing involving all sections of people including former policemen, veterans and renowned personalities of the locality. “I request the PRAYAAS committee to give priority to women issues, suicidal activities, drugs and crimes against children,” the Chief Minister added. Guwahati, May 11 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today announced that his government would set up an ‘Act East’ department to connect and take forward the Centre’s Act East Policy. “My government will take the initiative to set up ‘Act East’ department to implement the Prime Minister’s vision to connect the North East with South East Asia,” Sonowal said. The state government has started the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ policy and “we are prepared to facilitate global and national investors in the region so that it can become a vibrant economic gateway to South East Asia,” he said.

“Assam government is also planning to set up two global business centres to provide space to investors so that they can function from here,” he said while addressing the ‘Boost your Business’ programme organised by Facebook in collaboration with the state government. Sonowal said that the world has become a global village and the youth should come forward and explore the north eastern region’s potential and prospects through proper utilisation of resources available. The priority of this government was to work towards a better Assam and programmes like ‘Skill India’, ‘Make in India’ and ‘Start up India’ would be

fast tracked to empower youth and entrepreneurs, he said. “Facebook’s Boost Your Business campaign will complement our programmes,” he added. Facebook was helping small businesses connect with their customers and grow their businesses locally and globally as these were critical to economic growth and employment, Head of Programs for Facebook India, Ritesh Mehta, said. ‘Boost Your Business’ program would help local businesses by providing training and resources to build up a digital presence, reach new customers and grow beyond what the traditional offline economies would allow, he said.

Guwahati, May 11 (IANS): Assam’s Kaziranga National Park will be shut for visitors from next week, Director Satyendra Singh announced on Thursday. He said that the jeep and elephant safaris will be closed from May 16. The increased rainfall in the last one month has partially submerged the roads inside the park making it difficult for jeeps to ply for safaris. “Similarly, the temperatures have also increased in the last couple of days and under these circumstances... Taking these factors into consideration, we have decided to close the park,” Singh said. The normal safari season is from November 1 to April 30. Earlier this year, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had announced an extension and said the government will try to open the park from October 1 to May 30. “We tried to follow the government’s directives but due to the weather factors, we took the decision to close the park from May 16. However, we are going to put in efforts to make sure that it reopens on October 1,” the park director added.

Striving higher

imapur schools performed admirably well in the recently held HSLC and HSSLC examination 2017 where candidates of Dimapur occupied 85% of top 12 position in HSLC and in HSSLC Kohima schools occupying top positions in Arts while Dimapur dominating Commerce and Science streams. As usual private educational institutions continue to outperform government institutions. Of the 22,446 students who had appeared for the HSLC the exams, 15,754 cleared it taking the pass percentage to 70.19 per cent. The pass percentage registered an increase of 4.77% compared to last year’s 65.42 %. Deepa Mishra of Holy Cross Higher Secondary School Dimapur ranked first by securing 97.67 % while Nandita Paul of Pranab Vidyapith HSS Dimapur and Harsh Jain of Don Bosco HSS Dimapur ranked second and third respectively with 97.17 % and 96.67 % respectively. In the HSLC examination, out of 211 government schools, 29 had zero pass percentage while among the 385 private schools in the state, only two had nil pass percentage. Of all departments, education gets the major slice of the budget in the state and the amount is indeed mind boggling. While Government teachers are paid almost double of what private teachers get; they are unable to deliver the goods. In a sense, the respective outputs between private and government teachers is inversely proportionate to their salaries. In HSSLC, students of higher secondary schools in Kohima dominated Arts but candidates of Dimapur outperformed in Commerce and Science streams. In HSSLC Arts stream, 11,653 appeared for the examination with 9005 clearing it. The pass percentage stood at 77.28% . Elozüo M Saprüna with 94.20 per cent from Ministers’ Hill Baptist HSS, Kohima topped the arts stream. In commerce stream, 1169 candidates took the examination and 829 of them passed with a pass percentage of 70.92. In commerce Rajdeep Nath who secured 95% is a student of Pranab Vidyapith HSS, Dimapur topping the commerce stream. In HSSLC science stream 2304 students out of 2650 passed the examination with pass percentage of 86.94. Pranab Vidyapith also captured top position in Science when Piklu Paul, scored 94.80%. The results are inspiring but there is also a sinking feeling that students who go out for higher studies are not able to achieve a high degree of success. This leads to a realisation that there is great and ever increasing need for providing quality education for all round development of the mental, spiritual and physical aspects of the child. Education has become a multi-crore rupees business and there is no denying this fact. In Nagaland the ‘business’ is slowly picking up. High fees or academic results on the other hand, do not make an institution worthy unless it produces a useful citizen with a balanced growth of the mind the body. This driving concept makes education an instrument to bring about improvement in the quality of society and in this society reflects the education system. Striving for quality education means more than anything. Despite having a high percentage of literacy at around 80%, quality education in Nagaland hasn’t been spread wider. The role of teachers is of paramount importance in providing quality education that fills the gap. Quality teachers are not made with high degrees but who pursue their shared vision of a progressive society and who have an inborn sense of deep commitment.

DailyDevotion “Love One Another” …add to your…brotherly kindness love. —2 Peter 1:5, 7 Love is an indefinite thing to most of us; we don’t know what we mean when we talk about love. Love is the loftiest preference of one person for another, and spiritually Jesus demands that this sovereign preference be for Himself (see Luke 14:26). Initially, when “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit” (Romans 5:5), it is easy to put Jesus first. But then we must practice the things mentioned in 2 Peter 1 to see them worked out in our lives. The first thing God does is forcibly remove any insincerity, pride, and vanity from my life. And the Holy Spirit reveals to me that God loved me not because I was lovable, but because it was His nature to do so. Now He commands me to show the same love to others by saying, “…love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12). He is saying, “I will bring a number of people around you whom you cannot respect, but you must exhibit My love to them, just as I have exhibited it to you.” This kind of love is not a patronizing love for the unlovable— it is His love, and it will not be evidenced in us overnight. Some of us may have tried to force it, but we were soon tired and frustrated. “The Lord…is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish…” (2 Peter 3:9). I should look within and remember how wonderfully He has dealt with me. The knowledge that God has loved me beyond all limits will compel me to go into the world to love others in the same way. I may get irritated because I have to live with an unusually difficult person. But just think how disagreeable I have been with God! Am I prepared to be identified so closely with the Lord Jesus that His life and His sweetness will be continually poured out through Me? Neither natural love nor God’s divine love will remain and grow in me unless it is nurtured. Love is spontaneous, but it has to be maintained through discipline.

Post-mortem Diamond is also a stone The alarming rise of Naga youths

T

ruly the hardest material ever known to man called diamond that evolves from stones through millions of years is one of the most priced and dear to all human kind but unfortunately all the stones are not diamond and if all the stones are diamond, it will have no value to us. Here the high carbon-contain ingot diamond when cut and polished only it glitters that that count the value which everybody loves but only few could possess for its high price tag. Similarly all human are not humane enough to be counted as humanistic for various shortcomings where many of us failed to keep afloat in the sea of survive the fittest. Here, coming closer to the point the octogenarian icon among the Nagas Dr. S.C.Jamir at his 86 years best can be epitomized as glittery diamond as true to the perspective of his life journey as had been recently scripted by Mr.Jugdamba Mall, Dr.SC.Jamir is nothing less than evolvement of diamond from the rock. And to my limited knowledge the Naga iconic Dr.SC. Jamir was never a party to BJP parent’s body RSS and its ideology but being a secular minded person he respects all religions and that doesn’t make him less Christian rather a plus point of Christianity in him. Nevertheless, it was like a bolt from the blue on seeing an article N/P on 10th May ‘17; “Is it an honor for Nagas to accept RSS nomination” (Nomination for Vice President of India) citing RSS support in nominating Dr.SC Jamir as unacceptable and untouchable for a Christian can be amounting to yet another cardinal sin for a Christian with such a magnitude of intolerance. This is because the RSS or BJP cannot or never force down its ideology through the throat of Dr.S.C. Jamir but only indicated if he likes and if the region would feel honor to have a person from their own soil as the Vice President of India and as of now there seems to be no pre-condition as such the

N

matter is left to his own volition and liberty. Whereas, at time our weird thinking exposes our own ignorance thus, making ourselves a laughingstock before the non Christian communities of the world. No wonder, socio-culture, religions can be as complex not only in India and attaching everything to religious’ doctrines can be as fatal as talibanization in the making. So is, Christians are expected to be more liberal as long as our faith and belief is not put to jeopardy or threaten, let it be Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist their support for our cause if any should be welcome as a true Christian. As the saying goes; “To err is human, to forgive is divine” so is Dr.S.C.Jamir himself is human whose 86 years life journey may not be unblemished in one or the other way but if we are a real Christian we should learn to forgive and see the brighter side of him and his achievement as a politician, litterateur, a responsible citizen where his outstanding in various sociopolitical sphere has been widely acknowledged by the democratic Indians in which we are also a part of it as of today should honor the idea of making him the next Vice President of India without any inhibition. Please take it easy as I penned this in my own judgment according to what I’ve read and heard about the great man whom I never met nor does he knew me but in my own philosophy, right should be always right for whosoever he/ she may be. Dear naysayers, let’s be more pragmatic in our thought and action and make hay while the sunshine that would be a glory to God and man alike if Dr.SC Jamir were really enthroned to the highest seat of the country from the smallest dote of North East India. T

he alarming rise of Naga youths is bone shuddering. Every year, thousand of Naga youths graduate adding to the rising number of 70,000 registered educated unemployed youth scattered all over Nagaland. What has caused this epidemic of joblessness? How do we subside it? Almost the half of the youth population are neither working nor studying. Furthermore, Nagaland is slowly producing much more literate and educated individuals; the literacy rate of Nagaland according to 2011 census stands at 79.55% as compared to 66.59% in 2001 census ranging in number to 1,342,434 as recorded in 2011. On the other hand, many of the ‘employed’ among the least fortunate ones have only informal and intermitted jobs. The state government needs to shoulder the responsibility of educated unemployed youths who are trying to fit in, in the society. Whom do we blame? Is it the lack of job opportunities, corruptions, the factions or something else? Are there no other way to be employed other than the existence of civil service exams? Does the government lack financially to employ the qualified Naga youths of Nagaland in the labour market? The growing population of educated young people has fastened its speed. The over-ageing factor in all profession might also blunt this effect by increasing demand in jobs and giving panic attack before attaining certain age limits. However, nothing comes free in life, everything comes with a cause. So also, almost nothing is free and fair in Nagaland unless there is no corruption, unabated taxation and backdoor appointments stagnant to it. Generally, if we talk about corruption in Nagaland, people are akin to the air, we are no longer stranger to it, it is tiresome and apparent. We still, at a halt, have the parents saving money to buy government jobs for their children. And for people with power at hand, undisturbed by the ailing and struggles of the thousands of Naga Youths left behind

applying each and every post and vacancy hang for advertisement, which is however already bought by one signature away. The backdoor appointment culture had deprived and discouraged qualified and educated youths who are determined for their career carrying dreams full of hope and their hard work goes in vain. Many news headlines today tend to carry a long unending list of appointees in all kind of departments unfortunately many goes merely through the process of nepotism. It’s a hard fact but, we are programmed with this kind of education system that we study what is offered in our textbook; our whole life upbringing is rooted and nourished to study Science as the priority. As soon as you graduate, you will be mentally preparing as well as pressured by the family for civil services and other government and central jobs. The idea for working outside the state and companies is not so much encouraged by the families, and people end up saying; God knows what he/she is doing behind the eyes of his/her parents. A sense of hope is that businesses in Nagaland are going through a particular dramatic period of outburst of creativity. New technologies and sites have given a weapon for unleashing a forcing firm of artistic innovations. But the life expectancy of such bunch of people is decreasing because, if an individual tends to come out of the shell like the young entrepreneurs who are trying to figure out and make a living out of business and other establishment; they are thrust with taxes by factional groups. When do we Nagas give opportunity to the young intellects to bring the future of the Nagas under the light of development? Are we still waiting for some calling which will never be heard or we depend on each other too much. It’s time for us to reach out and built a better generation. How long can we lack behind when countries and other states are turning to smart cities. People have changed the lifestyle of living, and education and knowl-

edge flows in their society. What will be the state of the society when so many graduates are staying idle and unemployed? Is it our inability to look beyond the traditional employment sectors, inability to venture into new areas, or inability to change mental set up? Are we risking our society to people who do not deserve it so, when we have much abled ones working for low profile jobs? Are we still not clear enough of the vision for the Nagas? Why would the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. No matter what kind of schemes, organizations and seminars are planned and arranged by the government for the youths, it is, and will always be unbalanced, because it is way out of the league. Many youths do not need education and skills; they are already educated and learned. The education system had becomes monotonous inclined only with fixed books and notes. Give opportunities at what they are best at, trained them in what they are best for, recruit them in what they can. Try bridging the gap between education and work by upgrading vocational schools, encouraging standard schools to form closer relations with local companies, and embracing apprenticeships. Let’s create a society where opportunities and new ideas are at birth. It will always seem impossible until it is done. Employment and Development could rise even more than our projections, if politicians introduce major benefits cuts after every election in Nagaland. Policymakers have key role to play in introducing the reforms and measures needed to improve labour market and bring unemployment back down. Improving the quality of jobs is also as important as creating jobs because high rates of youth unemployment are wastage of resources for development. Poor participation of young minds limits the inputs of growth and progression in any society. Sonla Hongang, Student (Dibrugarh University), Journalism and Mass Communication

Rather, the Governor is obliged to either head the dissolved government as a case of suspended animation or, as the case usually is, request the outgoing ruling government but now dissolved assembly to be the caretaker government. There are two thin traps here, however. First, just because the CM alongwith his Council of Ministers dissolve the Assembly on expiry of the former’s sixmonth free ride as CM, it does not mean the present CM is at will to continue as the head caretaker of the dissolved Assembly and government—since only elected legislators are allow to be caretaker/head of a suspended government awaiting early general or snap poll elections. Second, the Governor is at leisure to adjudge a caretaker govern-

ment with President’s Rule if any political development warrants it so. It is political suicide for any ruling government to hold general elections under President’s Rule. It is therefore likely that the present NPF-led Government may call for early elections to the Thirteenth Nagaland Legislative Assembly, keeping in mind it has to seek peoples mandate while still controlling the State’s administrative machinery. In this situation, our present CM has no choice but to dissolve the Twelfth Nagaland Legislative Assembly and call for early assembly elections. It may therefore come to a point of whether it will be wise to hold general elections in Nagaland around mid-November 2017, which will critically affect the general population, especially students giving their endsemester exams. Or, whether elections will be held as scheduled by Assembly term, which will totally depend on what eventually becomes of the Chief Ministerial game of throne. A stable government indeed can only inspire public health and resilience—for individual power-hungry politics do affect social psyche and public morale. Kekhrie Yhome, (kekhrie@yahoo.com)

Reader’s Post Thousands pass out every year

Sir,

With the announcement of the HSLC and HSSLC results, thousands of students have crossed over the difficult gates. Now, the question is how do we accommodate all these children in different streams in our state itself. With limited infrastructure for various streams of study, our children have no option but to venture out of the state. If we had enough arts, science, engineering and medical colleges, many of us would be blessed to have our children within our sight. As students pass out yearly, our government need to create more infrastructure for the students. Temsukaba Ozukum, Signal Basti Dimapur newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

Sharif, Modi may meet; back channel links on

Islamabad, May 11 (IANS): Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan and Narendra Modi of India might meet in Kazakhstan, a top Pakistani official has said, amid reports of back channel contacts. Sartaj Azia, the Advisor to Sharif, said that a meeting between the two leaders cannot be ruled out on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit next month in Kazakhstan. But it was too early to speak about such a meting, the Nation newspaper quoted him as saying on Wednesday. “Pakistan could consider the meeting if interest was shown from

the other side.” Aziz said the SCO Summit was important as Pakistan would become a permanent member of the organisation. The report said there was widespread speculation about a possible Sharif-Modi meeting after the Pakistani Prime Minister recently met Indian business tycoon Sajjan Jindal, who “reportedly conveyed a message of the Indian premier to the Pakistani leader”. Aziz said Pakistan was reviewing India’s plea against alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav’s death sentence and also the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in

11 (IANS): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has directed the Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia to facilitate the return of 24 workers from India, including 12 from Odisha, who have been allegedly held captive by a company there on salary-related issues. The action of the External Affairs ministry came after Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik sought her intervention for the safe return of the Odia labourers. Sushma Swaraj asked the Indian embassy in Riyadh to inform the Chief Minister about the development in ensuring their repatriation. “Embassy cognizant of it, vigorously pursuing with the Company and agent towards their repatriation; hope to send them soon,” the Indian embassy in Riyadh tweeted. Earlier, the Chief Minister had tweeted, “Deeply con-

ers held captive in Saudi Arabia; Request @SushmaSwaraj ji @PMOIndia to intervene for their safe return.” At least 12 labourers from various blocks of Ganjam district had been to Saudi Arabia five months ago through an agent from Andhra Pradesh to work in Al Riyadh Construction Company. Of the remaining workers, eight are from Andhra Pradesh and four from Tamil Nadu. They were taken to Saudi Arabia to work as plumbers. However, their passports were seized after two months of payment and they were allegedly exploited and given life threats. Finding no help in the foreign land, the labourers sent WhatsApp videos narrating their ordeal to their family members. They sought the help of the government for their safe return to India.

New Delhi, May 11 (IANS): The Supreme court was moved on Thursday seeking suspension of the six-month sentence awarded to Calcutta High Court judge Justice C.S. Karnan for contempt of court. As Karnan’s counsel Mathew Nadumpara mentioned the petition before the constitution bench at the fag end of the proceedings on Thursday, Chief Justice J.S. Khehar, who is heading the bench, said that they would consider it CJI Khehar asked Nedumpara where is Justice Karnan, to which the bench was informed that he was “very much in Chennai”. The petition comes as the whereabouts of Justice Karnan remained a mystery. He was reported to have left the State Guest House in Chennai for the Shiva temple in Srikalahasti town in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

(IANS): Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday said the Centre will be launching a campaign to educationally empower the poor and marginalised sections of the society. “ Te h r i k - e - Ta a l i m (campaign for education) will be launched on the occasion of late President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s 86th birth anniversary on October 15,” Naqvi told the media here. “The campaign is aimed at educationally empowering the most poor and backward sections of the society.” Naqvi said the ministry will launch the campaign in 100 districts which were identified as lacking in education awareness. “Besides spreading awareness about education and the various other gov-

be building schools and educational institutions to develop educational infrastructure in these areas,” he said. Speaking about the achievements of the ministry in the last three years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, Naqvi said that scholarships worth Rs 4,740 crore were being given to 1.82 crore students besides contributing towards infrastructure development including building 33 colleges, 97 ITIs, 16 polytechnic institutes, and 1,102 school buildings. Pointing at a nearly 10 per cent hike in the ministry’s budget in 201718, Naqvi said around 70 per cent of the budget is being spent on schemes and programmes aimed at educational empowerment and skill development of minorities.

Maken meets LG for prosecution of Kejriwal over Shunglu report

New Delhi, May 11 (IANS): A Congress delegation, led by Delhi unit President Ajay Maken, on Thursday met Lt Governor Anil Baijal seeking sanction for the prosecution of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for “misuse of his official position” on the basis of the Shunglu Committee report. In a memorandum to the LG,

Maken demanded sanction for prosecution the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, CrPC, and IPC on the basis of the Shunglu report. In his memorandum, Maken mentioned the findings of the Shunglu Committee said that “Kejriwal is liable to be prosecuted and

punished for various acts of corruption wherein he misused his official position as Chief Minister to extend illegal and valuable benefits to Aam Aadmi Party, its volunteers and thereby denying the general public of Delhi an opportunity to apply for government jobs.” The Shunglu committee submitted its report on November 27,

2016, to the LG and the central government. The three-member committee, headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General V.K. Shunglu, was set up by the then Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung after the Delhi High Court gave primacy to the LG in Delhi administrative affairs in August 2016.

Deputy High Commissioner, J P Singh and condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violation by the Indian occu-

pation forces on the night of 10th and 11th May,” it said. The Foreign Office said the “deliberate targeting” of ci-

vilians is contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws.

the case. The Nation quoted unnamed senior Pakistani Foreign Office officials as saying that diplomatic efforts had been launched to defuse tensions along the borders with its immediate neighbours. “There have been overt and covert talks with all the countries (Iran, Afghanistan and India),” an official was quoted as saying. “Nobody can afford confrontation, so we are trying to resolve the misunderstandings through talks,” the official said. He said that while there had been open talks with Iran and Afghanistan, “back-channels were being used in India’s case”. The unnamed official added that if Modi and Sharif do meet on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, “it will be positive to concentrate on the talks process”. Relations between India and Pakistan have touched a new low after a Pakistani military court awarded death sentence to Indian “spy” Jadhav and two Indian soldiers were beheaded on the Jammu and Kashmir border.

DIMAPUR, MAY 11 (NPN): Jalukie Students’ Union Nagaland (JSUN) on Thursday condemned the alleged “high handiness” on the part of the Education department with regard to appointment of Grade-IV staff at GHSS Jalukie. The students’ body alleged that the department had deprived the rights of the land owners and recommended a candidate leaving aside aspiring candidates. JSUN president Haizin Mpom and general secretary Pehiato Hingleu in a statement stated that the vacancy fell vacant after one Hungambo took voluntarily retirement on June 30, 2016. In this regard, JSUN said the land owners (Jalukie Village) duly recommended the candidature of one Widunsu for the post as per agreed terms and conditions between the State government and Old Jalukie Village Council at the time of establishment of Jalukie township. They said two other candidates had also applied for the same post. However, it claimed the department had deprived the rights of the landowners and appointed Kigum, who was not an applicant for the said post. JSUN’s stand was that Kigum’s appointment was based on purported document submitted by him, claiming that “Jalukie town was a compensated land which was easily diluted without any authentication or confirmation from the competent authority”. In the light of the above, JSUN has demanded the department to immediately restore the land owner’s right. The union also warned of action in the event their demand was not met and that it would not be held responsible for any consequences. Further, JSUN said that Old Jalukie Village Council has expelled Kigum from Jalukie land based on customary law and for his anti-Jalukie activities by submitting false and distorted documents to the department.

closing high of 30,248.17 reached yesterday. The gauge has now risen by 392.18 points in four sessions. On similar lines, the 50-share NSE Nifty gained 15.10 points or 0.16 per cent to 9,422.40 after scaling a fresh intra-day high of 9,450.65. The index broke its previous record closing of 9,407.30 reached yesterday. “Today’s volatility in the European market ahead of BoE policy meet has turned investors to profit-booking. “But positive implication of a good monsoon forecast and government’s focus on reforms is attracting investors to stay in the market,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services. Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth net Rs 893.36 crore yesterday, as per provisional data from the stock exchanges. Most Asian stocks advanced as global equities remained at record levels amid a rebound in oil. Key indices in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan rose up to 1.16 per cent.

Mumbai, May 11 (PTI): Extending their record setting run for the second day, benchmarks Sensex and Nifty finished at fresh lifetime highs today as sentiment remained upbeat on forecast of a normal monsoon this year. The BSE Sensex edged up by about 3 points to end at 30,250.98, while the broader NSE Nifty gained 15 points to reach 9,422.40. The indices had ended at record highs in yesterday’s session as well after the weather office said monsoon rainfall this year will exceed its earlier forecast, easing inflation worries. Two-wheeler makers Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto were the top performers in the Sensex pack on expectations that normal monsoon will boost rural demand. The 30-share BSE Sensex opened higher and soared to yet another intra-day record of 30,366.43, but slipped on profit- booking towards the fag-end. It finally ended at 30,250.98, up 2.81 points or 0.01 per cent, surpassing the previous record

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI): The Income Tax department has launched a new e-facility to link a person’s Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number (PAN), a mandatory procedure for filing IT returns now. The department’s efiling website-- https:// incometaxindiaefiling.gov. in/-- has created a new link on its homepage making it “easy” to link the two unique identities of an individual. The link requires a person to punch in his PAN number, Aadhaar number and the “exact name as given in the Aadhaar card”. “After verification from the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the linking will be confirmed. In case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name provided, Aadhaar OTP (one time password) will be required,” the department said in its advisory to taxpayers and individuals. The OTP will be sent

New Delhi, May 11 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Thursday heard a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of “triple talaq” and to know whether it was fundamental to Islam. “We are going to decide the validity of triple talaq,” said Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, heading a Constitution bench.

The Chief Justice said that petitioners and respondents would address the court on whether triple talaq was an enforceable fundamental right. Person who commits suicide cannot be a martyr: Delhi HC AAP rally at Jantar Mantar on April 22, 2015. The incident took place during an anti-land bill rally called by the Aam Aadmi Party. The court’s oral observation came while clubbing all three matters together and listing them for further hearing on July 7. During the brief arguments, the petitioners’ lawyers told the court that only those persons who die fighting in border areas or while discharging their duty there can be termed or considered as martyr.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched the “BSFMyApp” at a function in New Delhi on Thursday. (PTI)

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI): Home Minister Rajnath Singh today launched a mobile-based grievance redressal application for central paramilitary personnel, development that comes against the backdrop of burgeoning incidents of troopers taking to social media to voice their complaints. “Now I am only a click away,” Singh said after launching the app. He asked the personnel to send their grievances directly to his ministry. Singh said his ministry was making efforts to ensure that the family of every trooper killed in action gets a compensation of at least Rs 1 crore. The centralised app for five Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) of CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP,

SSB besides the Delhi Police has been launched about four months after BSF jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav took to social media to complain about alleged bad quality food being served to troops. Quite a few such videos followed in quick succession. The minister, however, said he had proposed such an app for troops during the annual conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of Police in Hyderabad last year. “I had expressed my desire to connect with the jawans of these forces...I had said we should do something for them. There is a provision for solving the problems of the personnel within their respective forces but there are some issues or problems

the Chief Secretary apprised the court that a forensic test of the CD of Yogi Adityanath’s alleged hate speech of January 27, 2007, showed it was tampered with. The case was filed in 2008 by local journalist Pervez Parwaz and social activist Asad Hayat, who is also witness to Yogi’s speech. The probe into the allegations was completed in 2015 but despite a government headed by the Samajwadi Party, no sanction was granted for Yogi’s prosecution and the matter remained in limbo. After the statement by the Chief Secretary, the petitioners said that they will move court again to challenge the government stand. They also scoffed at the development by saying that it was ridiculous that the man in-charge of the home department, Yogi Adityanath, has given himself a clean chit.

‘Spyder’ surface-to-air missile test fired Balasore (Odisha), May 11 (PTI): India today test fired ‘Spyder’ surface-to-air missile from a test range in Odisha as part of a series of tests of the short-range quick reaction missile. The trial was carried out for validating various parameters of the sophisticated weapon system to further strengthen its air defence system, official sources here said. ‘Spyder’, an acquired missile system from Israel, is a short-range, quick reaction surface-to-air missile designed to strike an enemy air target within a very short time, they said. The state-of-the-art missile has a strike range of about 15 km in low altitude. However, it is shorter than India’s indigenously developed surface-toair ‘Akash’ missile, which has a 25 km strike range. The weapon was test fired from a mobile launcher at launch complex 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur and targeted a pilot-less target aircraft, the sources said.

NGT raps DDA for casting aspersions on panel’s findings NEW DELHI, MAY 11 (PTI): The National Green Tribunal today rapped the Delhi Development Authority for casting aspersions on the findings of its expert committee on damage caused to the Yamuna floodplains because of the 3—day cultural event organised by Art Of Living (AOL). A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar took exception to the submission of the counsel for DDA, who questioned the conclusions

of the seven—member expert panel. “It is not fair. You cannot make sweeping comments on people who have devoted their life to environment. We are warning you people that if anybody passes strictures, we will not hesitate to take action against them,” the bench said. The DDA counsel said he did not intend to cast aspersions and was just questioning the basis of the findings and technology used by the experts panel.

where the help of the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) is required. “You can now send your grievances directly to MHA. Now, I am only a click away. I assure you that I will review the status of grievances sent by jawans to MHA every month,” Singh said after the launch of the app at a BSF facility here. He also launched an exclusive ‘BSFMyApp’ for the personnel of the Border Security Force. The BSF app will also help jawans register their complaints and know the details about their pay, provident funds and deputation among others. The minister said he “gets emotional” when he sees the jawans and officers of these forces working in difficult areas and recounted who the jawans had to stay under a tin roof in an interior area of Chhattisgarh. “Our jawans and officers are very disciplined... they would not speak out about their problems but they can do so now with these new apps, both of their respective organisations and that of the MHA,” Singh said. The apps, owing to security reasons, will not be available over the Android or Apple-based play stores but can be downloaded from the website of the respective forces and the MHA app from the home ministry’s official portal.

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI): A person who commits suicide cannot be termed a martyr, the Delhi High Court today told the AAP government which had conferred the status on an ex- armyman, who allegedly killed himself over the OROP issue. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Anu Malhotra asked what duty was somebody, who was at Jantar Mantar, discharging. “He committed suicide on his own. Can he be called a martyr,” the bench asked. The court was hearing two PILs against the Delhi government’s decision to accord martyr status to Ram Kishan Grewal who had allegedly committed suicide during a protest at Jantar Mantar over the ‘One Rank, One Pension’(OROP) issue on November 1 last year. Another PIL opposed the city government’s decision to declare as martyr a Rajasthan-based-politician-cumfarmer Gajendra Singh Kalyanwat who had allegedly hanged himself at an

On March 16, the Delhi High Court had also held that the Centre’s decision to ban the IRF was taken to safeguard national security. It had dismissed IRF’s plea challenging the ban. IRF had moved the tribunal against the November 17, 2016 notification of the of the Ministry of Home Affairs imposing an immediate ban on the organisation under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. However, since the tribunal declined to hear the matter before February 6, the foundation had moved the Delhi High Court challenging the immediate ban. The Judicial Tribunal, was set up to look into the b a n o n c o n t r ove r s i a l preacher Naik’s NGO. Concurring with the finding of the Centre, the tribunal noted in its 115page order that no explanation was given on Naik’s behalf during the hearing. It also noted that Naik has failed to give clarification that the speeches had been made in his individual capacity and not on behalf of IRF.

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI): A special tribunal today upheld the Centre’s decision to ban Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), saying there were sufficient reasons, including posing a threat to India’s security, to declare it an unlawful association. The tribunal, headed by Justice Sangeeta Dhingra of the Delhi High Court, found that Naik has failed to participate in the legal proceedings before it and was “absconding and untraceable”. The Tribunal on February 23 had ordered incamera hearing in view of the confidential material being scrutinised by it. Upholding the Centre’s November 17, 2016 notification banning IRF for five years, the tribunal said there were sufficient reasons and cause to declare IRF an unlawful association. “The entire material placed on record shows that the IRF was involved in activities which not only incite and encourage the youth to under take the unlawful activities with and intent to threaten the sovereignty, unity, integrity and security of India. “It also cause disaffection against India, which leaves no doubt that the ingredients of section... of the Unlawful Activities

The court said both sides would get two days each to argue their case. Thereafter, both sides would get a day each to submit rejoinders. Triple talaq is a practice under which a husband can verbally divorce his wife by uttering the word “talaq” thrice. This has been opposed by a section of the Muslim society while others say it cannot be changed as it is part of Muslim personal law. The Modi government wants triple talaq to go. The practice is not followed in many Muslim countries including Pakistan.

DIMAPUR: Taking serious note of “irregularities and proxy teachers” in gover nment schools, the Satoi Range Students’ union (SRSU) has sought the intervention of minister of School Education and SCERT, Yitachu, to initiate corrective measures, suggesting installation of fingerprint biometric devices as a deterrent to check irregularities. This was informed in a press note by SRSU president Nikato Aye and general secretary Homugha Achumi. While highlighting the adverse effects of such trends on the student’s career, SRSU has also informed that it would be conducting surprise checking in all the schools under its jurisdiction in the near future. SRSU reminded that government teachers were

liable for termination of service if absent from duty for more than one month without leave or if found employing proxy teacher. The union warned that upon detection of such activities, it would be reporting the matter to the higher authority, for which the union would not be held responsible. SRSU also informed that “no grace period” will be granted w.e.f May 30, 2017 and therefore reminded all the teachers of Government High School Satoi (GHSS) to be stationed at Satoi Head quarter in the next thirty days. It pointed out that in 2016, GHSS scored nil in the 2016 HSLC examinations while one out of three passed in 2017. The poor performance, SRSU claimed, was because of irregularities of

teachers and proxy teachers. There is also less enrolment at Government High School Satoi due to lack of basic infrastructure and irregularities of teachers and proxy teachers, SRSU noted. It also informed that in a meeting with unit presidents of the eleven villages, the house resolved to strictly adhere the directives of All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) in the interest of the students’ welfare. The initiative to conduct checking, SRSU maintained, was a “corrective measures to clean the messy education department”, adding “if we are incapable or incompetent to serve humanity a person should not deprive the innocent students of their rights to quality education which is also a serious violation of human rights.”

Brazil’s ex-President Lula questioned over corruption

He leads opinion polls ahead of next year’s election, but inspires hatred among opponents fed up with corruption revelations and a devastating recession that began under Lula’s handpicked successor Dilma Rousseff. Supporters, however, are equally passionate, citing the booming economy and historic social programs during his own presidency. “I think he is innocent. ‘Pak army, ISI pushing Sindh towards civil war’

Pak, Iran set up joint border commission

WASHINGTON, MAY 11 (PTI): Pakistan’s army and spy agency ISI are pushing Sindh province towards a civil war, the head of the country’s fourth largest party has alleged and sought the intervention of the UN and the international community. In a audio message, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain alleged that Pakistan Army and ISI have “virtually taken control” of all Pakistan including Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and all Balochistan. “They have killed hundreds and thousands of innocent Mohajir Balochs and Pashtoons who raised their voice against Punjabi army,” London-based Hussain said in the message. “Now the the world community is realising that Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI has been harbouring the most wanted terrorists including Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omer and Mullah Akhter Mansoor in Pakistan,” he said. He asked “the UN Secretary General and the international community to intervene and use their offices to stop the bloodshed of Mohajirs, Balochs and Pashtoons” in Pakistan.

Hussain said Pakistan Army and ISI are pushing Karachi, Hyderabad and urban centers of Sindh towards a civil war. “The patience of Mohajir Nation is cutting loose as more than 20,000 Mohajirs have been extra judicially killed in army-led operations which continues since 1992,” he said. Referring to the recent Iranian statement warning Pakistan for safe havens of Taliban, jihadi groups, Hussain said Islamabad is getting isolated by every passing day in the world community. The MQM, Karachi’s biggest political party, is facing a crackdown after its former self-exiled leader Altaf Hussain in London last year delivered an antiPakistan speech and asked his workers to launch attack on media.

ISLAMABAD, MAY 11 (PTI): Pakistan said today that a joint border commission has been set up with Iran to address bilateral issues, a day after it summoned the Iranian envoy to express concern over Iran’s assertion that it will hit terror “safe havens” in its neighbouring country. Pakistan Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said that both countries set up a commission to ensure better border management. Relations between the neighbours have been tense due to the killing of Iranian border guards in a clash with militants. Pakistan yesterday summoned the Iranian ambassador to express its concern over Iran army chief ’s remarks that Tehran will hit “safe havens” of terrorists in Pakistan.

C A R AC A S, M AY 1 1 (AGENCIES): A senior Venezuelan official accused anti-government protesters of resorting to “chemical weapons” by throwing human excrement at riot police in their latest demonstrations. Judicial inspector general Marielys Valdez spoke out Wednesday after protesters hurled jars of feces dubbed “Poopootov cocktails” during the latest in weeks of clashes in Caracas. “That is a biochemical

weapon... The use of biochemical weapons is fully classified as a crime and incurs strong penalties,” she said on state television channel VTV. “The use of chemical weapons, in this case human and animal feces, has consequences... it can get into the water and cause terrible contamination” and disease, she added. Daily clashes between demonstrators and security forces have left 38 people dead since April 1, prosecutors say. Protesters blame

elected President Nicolas Maduro for an economic crisis that has caused food shortages. They are demanding early elections, accusing him of repressing protesters and trying to install a dictatorship. Maduro, who blames the crisis on what he calls a US-backed plot, brands the protesters “terrorists.” Scores of people arrested in protests in recent days have been brought before military courts, human rights groups say.

Row over euro heats up in Le Pen’s party after poll defeat PARIS, MAY 11 (AGENCIES): A row heated up on Thursday in France’s National Front (FN) over the euro, with leader Marine Le Pen’s top aide threatening to resign if the party dropped its policy of ditching the European currency after her defeat in the presidential election. Le Pen’s heavy defeat on Sunday by centrist Emmanuel Macron has prompted soul-searching within the far-right FN with some blaming her commitment to quitting the euro zone for the outcome. While a large majority of FN supporters back a return to the French franc, opinion polls indicate threequarters of French voters want to keep the euro, including many older voters who fear their euro-denominated pensions could be devalued. Echoing this view, a FN-affiliated lawmaker said Le Pen needed to learn

A verdict is not expected for weeks, but if Lula is found guilty, and then loses an appeal, he would be barred from seeking office, likely including running for re-election in 2018. He could even face prison time. A fiery orator who rose from shoeshine boy to union leader and founder of the Workers’ Party before leading Brazil from 2003-2010, Lula is a polarizing figure in Latin America’s biggest country.

Scores of senators and other powerful figures have been convicted or are under investigation. In today’s case, Lula is alleged to have taken a luxury seaside apartment near Sao Paulo as a bribe from the OAS construction company, which did lucrative business with Petrobras. Prosecutors say they suspect he not only took bribes and sold influence, but amounted to a kingpin over the wider scheme. Lula, who also faces four other corruption court cases, vigorously denies the charges, describing the onslaught as an attempt to destroy him and his leftist movement.

BEIJING, MAY 11 (PTI): Eight people were killed and 23 others injured today after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. So far, the quake has affected lives of more than 12,000 people. A total of 9,200 people have been relocated, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. More than 1,000 soldiers and police officers, and 1,500 civilians have rushed to the quake-stricken areas for rescue operations, according to the quake emergency response headquarters. Wang Fuyou, the ruling Communist Party chief of the county seat, said the quake was followed by aftershocks which were also felt strongly. Cracks appeared on the walls of houses in the county. Some people were buried after adobe houses near the epicentre collapsed, Wang was quoted as saying by the report. The county government has sent security personnel to carry out search operations in Quzgun village, the worsthit village in the quake having a population of 449 people, Wang said.

CURITIBA (BRAZIL), MAY 11 (AFP): Brazil’s former leftist president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva faced the country’s top anti-corruption judge today in a trial that could doom his bid to return to power in 2018. Lula, 71, was being grilled by Judge Sergio Moro on charges that he received a bribe in the form of a seaside apartment near Sao Paulo. He ar rived at the courthouse in the southern city of Curitiba at 2:00 pm (1700 GMT) for the hearing, which was barred to the public and media. Security was exceptionally tight by Brazilian standards. Several hundred riot police, watched by an officer on a rooftop, stood guard, keeping thousands of Lula supporters and even local residents away from the area. I n d i a i s u n h a p py that Chinese state-owned companies are working in the Pakistani-held part of Kashmir, the Himalayan region claimed by both sides. Indian leaders see that as an endorsement of Pakistani control. “We have some serious reservations about it, because of sovereignty issues,” said India’s finance and defense minister, Arun Jaitley, at an Asian Development Bank meeting this month in Yokohama, Japan. China has tried previously to mollify Indian anxiety by saying in

January its highway work “targets no third country.” China’s new Silk Road initiative is ramping up as President Donald Trump focuses on domestic issues, downplaying foreign affairs. American officials say Washington wants to work with China on infrastructure. But some diplomats and political analysts say Beijing is trying to create a political and economic network centered on China, push the United States out of the region and rewrite rules on trade and security.

5 militants blow themselves up in B’desh DHAKA, MAY 11 (PTI): Five militants from the same family today blew themselves up after stabbing a firefighter to death during a police raid on their hideout in Bangladesh, the latest such incident amid a crackdown on Islamist militants. The incident took place in Godgari area in Rajshahi district. Godagari police official Hifzul Alam Munshi said that police surrounded the house at Benipur village early morning after intelligence inputs suggested presence of militants there. As they tried to storm the hideout at around 8 am, the militants came out and set off the explosions, he said. Before setting off the blasts, the terror suspects speared a fireman to death. Two policemen have been also injured in the incident. The fire service men assisting us in the raid died in their suicide blast at the hideout,” an official familiar with the development at the police headquarters in Dhaka told PTI. He added that the operation, launched over-

night, was underway as “at least one of them is still trying to resist us from inside”. The five persons killed in the blasts were the 50year-old house owner, his 40-year-old wife, 28-yearold daughter and two sons aged 30 and 25. As the law enforcers were about to approach the house, the suspects came out and attacked officials with sharp weapons, killing a fireman. Two policemen have been hospitalised with injuries sustained during the attack. Police rescued two children, who exited the premises before the terror suspects came out. A woman, seen sitting on the field outside the house as the raid unfolded, later surrendered. Police said she has been identified as the house owner’s other daughter. She is the mother of the two children -- 8-year-old boy and 3-month-old girl -- rescued by police before the blasts, the report said. Skirmishes over culture strain Saudi rulers, clerics alliance

J E D DA H , M AY 1 1 ( AG E N C I E S ) : W h e n senior Saudi cleric Abdulaziz al-Tarifi told his almost one million Twitter followers that musical instruments were ungodly, it helped spark a hashtag among like-minded Saudis that “the people reject music academies”. The hashtag, echoing the language of Arab Spring revolts elsewhere, captured the hostility to reforms that introduced entertainment events from rock concerts and comedy shows to kick-boxing into the conservative kingdom. But Nora Shanar, a writer at Saudi newspaper Elaph, spoke for swathes of people when she shot back to defend a shake-up of the Saudi cultural scene: “Don’t speak in the name of the people.” “Speak in the name of those who don’t love life and forbid music when God himself did not.” Such exchanges highlight strains between the ruling family’s alliance with conservative clerics

which have been exposed as a reformist and powerful prince works to diversify the economy away from oil and permit new freedoms among Saudis steeped in cleric-imposed puritanism.

headquarters recently circulated a list of nearly 5,000 suspected militants to all district police chiefs. On Sunday, two suspected militants blew themselves up in “suicide blasts” when security forces raided their hideout. In March, Bangladeshi police conducted series of large-scale operations against militants, in which at least 17 suspected militants were killed. On March 31, eight militants blew themselves up with a grenade after the security forces raided their hideout north of the Bangladeshi capital. Bangladesh has been witnessing a spate of attacks on secular activists, foreigners and religious minorities since 2013. The country launched a massive crackdown on militants specially after the Dhaka cafe attack. The Islamic State has claimed several attacks in Bangladesh, but the government rejects the presence of foreign terrorist groups in the moderate Muslimmajority country, blaming home-grown groups such as the neo-JMB for terrorist attacks.

“China is trying to change the way the political structure of the region works,” said William A. Callahan, an international relations specialist at the London School of Economics. “We will have to see whether it can achieve this.” Trump’s decision to pull out of the proposed 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership deprives China’s neighbors of a tool they hoped would counter its rising influence, said Max Baucus, the U.S. ambassador to Beijing until January. Baucus called the move a “large geopolitical mistake.” “Southeast Asian countries would tell me ‘We want you, we want the TPP, then we can balance China with the United States. But when you’re not there, there is a void that China’s going to fill,’” Baucus told The Associated Press. Dubbed “One Belt, One Road” after ancient trade routes through the Indian Ocean and Central Asia, the initiative is Chinese President Xi Jinping’s signature project.

‘I will be fine,’ says sacked FBI chief WASHINGTON, MAY 11 (IANS): A day after he was fired by US President Donald Trump, FBI Director James Comey wrote an email to the bureau explaining that he is “not going to spend time” thinking about the decision to fire him or how it was executed. “I will be fine,” Comey assured his former staffers in an email letter obtained by CNN. Comey wrote that he has “long believed the President can fire an FBI Director for any reason or for no reason at all”, and said he will not question that decision -- and he hopes no one else will. “I have said to you before that, in times of turbulence, the American people should see the FBI as a rock of competence, honesty and independence,” the email read. “What makes leaving the FBI hard is the nature and quality of its people, who together make it that rock for America.” Comey wrote that “working with you has been one of the great joys of my life”.

B E I J I N G , M AY 1 1 (AGENCIES): In a mountain valley in Kashmir, plans are underway for Chinese engineers guarded by Pakistani forces to expand the lofty Karakoram Highway in a project that is stirring diplomatic friction with India. The work is part of a sprawling Chinese initiative to build a “new Silk Road” of ports, railways and roads to expand trade in a vast arc of countries across Asia, Africa and Europe. The Asian Development Bank says the region, home to 60 percent of the world’s people, needs more than $26 trillion of such investment by 2030 to keep economies growing. The initiative is in many ways natural for China, the world’s biggest trader. But governments from Washington to Moscow to New Delhi worry Beijing also is trying to build its own political influence and erode theirs. Others worry China might undermine human rights, environmental and other standards for lending or leave poor countries burdened with debt.

L O N D O N, M AY 1 1 (PTI): A draft of the election manifesto yet to be formally approved and launched by Britain’s Labour Party was leaked to the media today in which the Opposition pledged to re-nationalise the country’s energy industry, railways and the Royal Mail. The document, seen by the BBC, is the most detailed draft with a 20-point plan on workers’ rights alone. It was yet to be signed off by most senior party figures, including the shadow cabinet and Labour’s national executive committee. The final version will form the foundation of Labour’s bid to win over voters in the June 8 general election. The detailed document has been branded as “socialist” and filled with “class envy” by many sections of the British media as it proposes nationalisation of the country’s railways and the postal service and having at least one state-owned electricity supplier. “We do not comment on leaks. We will announce our policies in our manifesto, which is our plan to transform Britain for the many, not the few,” a spokesperson for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said.

North Korean University draws US evangelicals despite risks

FILE -- Korean American Kim Dong Chul enters a courtroom in this undated photo released by North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang April 29, 2016.

SEOUL, MAY 11 (AGENCIES): Like many other Americans who came to teach at the foreign-funded Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), Kim Hak Song was a Christian missionary who raised money from a church to come to North Korea. Kim had been running PUST’s experimental farm before he was detained on Saturday, traveling by train from Pyongyang to China’s border town of Dandong, PUST’s chancellor and co-founder Chan-mo Park told Reuters. The university, which is open about its Christian affiliation, says its

sole mission is to help North Korea’s future elite learn the skills to modernize the isolated country and engage with the outside world. Former teachers say the faculty is careful to avoid anything that looks like missionary work. The university attracts a steady stream of devout American Christians, despite North Korea’s history of handing down long sentences with hard labor to missionaries accused of various transgressions. North Korea has in the past used detainees to extract concessions, including high-profile visits from the United States, which has no

formal diplomatic relations with North Korea. Chancellor Park said roughly 60 U.S. citizens come to PUST each semester, but now “there’s less than that”. North Korea’s official news agency KCNA said Kim was detained for “hostile acts”, without elaborating. Tony Kim, another professor who worked at PUST, was arrested two weeks earlier for a similar reason. On Thursday, KCNA said it was its sovereign right to “ruthlessly punish” U.S. citizens it has detained for crimes against the state, saying U.S. media’s description of such arrests as a bargaining ploy was “pure ignorance”. “Recent Americans detained are being interrogated by relevant legal authorities for criminal acts against the Republic,” KCNA said, without mentioning the two men by name. “It is an exercise of the legitimate right of a sovereign state to deal with the criminals according to its law ... The DPRK will detect and frustrate every antiDPRK plot of the dishonest hostile elements and ruthlessly punish the criminals and thus reliably defend its state and social system.”

Putin, Abbas discuss Palestine-Israeli conflict SOCHI, MAY 11 (AGENCIES): Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to discuss issues related to the Palestine-Israeli conflict, as well as bilateral relations. “Let me welcome you here in Russia,” Putin said. “I am glad to have another meeting with you, relations with Palestine are special and important for us,” he added. The Russian president pointed out that the parties had emphasized the deep roots of bilateral ties during the opening ceremony of the new multifunctional cultural center in Bethlehem, which took place recently. “In the recent history, our relations have remained warm and trust-based,” Putin said thanking his counterpart for the attention he paid to bilateral ties and for the support provided to Russians living in Palestine. “For years, we have been trying to solve one of the key issues of the modern world, that is, the Middle East issue, so we always have things to discuss.” “Russia will continue

stability,” Putin pointed out. “The Palestine-Israeli conflict can only be resolved politically, through negotiations based on international law,” he added. The Russian leader also said that it was important to maintain bilateral relations, refrain from unilateral steps and cooperate in the search for mutually acceptable solutions, as well as in the fight against terrorism. The Russian leader was confident that Abbas’s visit to Russia

would prove to be productive. “Russia’s position has remained firm, it is aimed at the creation of an independent Palestinian state with the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital,” Abbas said at the meeting which took place in the Russian city of Sochi. “We have been hearing you reiterate this position. It is impossible to solve the Palestinian issue without Russia’s meaningful participation in the peace process, that is what we have been emphasizing at all international meetings,” the Palestinian leader added. Abbas thanked the Russian president for his assistance in the creation of the new multifunctional cultural center in Bethlehem. He pointed to Putin’s personal participation in this project stressing that the creation of the center would help further strengthen Palestinian-Russian relations. Abbas added that the Palestinian people were proud of their relations with Russia and always felt Russia’s support.

He said each culture describes the world in a different way and it was important to learn from each other. He appreciated the local film makers for the quality and variety of the films and documentaries produced and directed by them and also winning accolades not only in India but also in the international platform. He admitted that our local film making have a long way to go still but they are making a very good beginning with the limited or no facilities in the State. uncharted places for film making yet was unable to exploit the potentials due to the insurgency problems. However, he said with the changing times and the changing social scenario there was no question as to why films could not be shot in this part of the world and welcomed film makers to explore the beautiful land and assured everything feasible to facilitate them. Chief guest also opined that the first film festival would bring better things and help bring many inspiring films to the screen. He urged the gathering to explore the opportunities of global co-operation, both for the development of our cultural and creative sectors and for the promotion of cultural exchange. He expressed confidence that the film festival would provide a space for film makers of the region to interact and engage and create a network (both virtual and real) for filmmakers to share their works, concerns and to build capacity in young filmmakers.

Ali impresses on rain affected opening day

Azhar Ali made an unbeaten half-century as Pakistan reached 169 for two at close of day one. Ros e a u, M ay 1 1 (Agencies): Azhar Ali made an unbeaten halfcentury as Pakistan struggled through a rain-hit first day of the decisive third Test against West Indies at Roseau. The home side’s 106run win in Bridgetown last week meant the series remains in the balance, but Azhar batted all day to remain unbeaten on 85, while Babar Azam added 55 as the tourists reached 169 for two at the close. Having dismissed Pakistan cheaply in the second

Test to claim a win, Jason Holder opted to bowl first in favourable conditions and was rewarded as the recalled Shan Masood edged Roston Chase to slip for just nine. That brought Babar Azam to the crease on the back of a pair in Bridgetown, but the 22-year-old played without alarm before persistent rain forced an early end to the afternoon session. Shane Dowrich earlier missed a sharp catch to get rid of Azhar, but was later guilty of missing a far more straightforward catch to

dismiss Azam as he failed to get a hand on an inside edge. Pakistan were bogged down by some tight bowling from the hosts but the pair continued, adding 120 for the second wicket before Azam was caught in two minds by Alzarri Joseph and edged to slip for 55. Younus Khan was given a guard of honour on his way to the crease in what could be his final Test and finished the day unbeaten on 10, alongside Azhar who rode his luck to see out the day on 85 not out.

A life made beautiful by kindly deeds, a helping hand for others needs. In life we love you dearly; in death we do the same. Real Madrid in CL final despite defeat

Players of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid fight for the ball during their Champions League semi-final match on Wednesday. Madrid, May 11 (IANS): Real Madrid booked a place in the Champions League final despite their 1-2 defeat in the semi-final return leg to Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon stadium here. A close range goal from Isco on the break of halftime was vital in easing Real Madrid into the final on 4-2 aggregate after a blistering start by their rivals, who won 2-1 here on Wednesday night. Knowing they needed at least three goals to get back from their 3-0 first

leg defeat, Atletico proposed a physical affair and Danilo and Stefan Savic were booked in the first five minutes. Before the half-time break, Diego Godin, Gabi and Sergio Ramos had joined them in the referee’s book, all for protesting as the referee let several tough challenges go unpunished. By then Atletico were 2-0 ahead. Saul Niguez headed the home side ahead from a Koke corner in the 11th minute before Antoine Griezmann doubled Atletico’s lead six minutes later af-

ter Rafael Varene had fouled Fernando Torres in the Real Madrid penalty area. To their credit Real Madrid remained calm and proceeded to dominate possession for the rest of the half, frustrating the home players and taking the sting out of Atletico’s attacking thrust. Isco got a vital away goal three minutes before half-time after brilliant work from Karim Benzema in twisting his way past two defenders on the goal-line before pulling the ball back for Tony Kroos. Although Jan

Oblak saved the German’s shot, Isco was on hand to score from close range. Real looked to continue their control of midfield in the second half and Atletico coach Diego Simeone responded with a double change replacing Torres and Gimenez with Thomas Partey and Kevin Gameiro. Keylor Navas made a double save on 65 minutes to deny Yannick Carrasco’s low shot and Antoine Griezmann’s header from the rebound. Luka Modric then had a goal ruled out due to a questionable positional offside from Ronaldo before Navas saved low on his near post to deny Griezmann. As the players tired the game opened up and only a late challenge from Thomas denied Benzema, while Ramos denied Griezmann almost on the goal-line. The game ended in the middle of a tremendous thunderstorm and despite their side’s exit, the home fans cheered their players off the pitch. They knew Atletico had tried everything possible, but the damage had been done eight days before in the Bernabeu stadium.

Nadal struggles past Fognini in Madrid M a d r i d, M ay 1 1 (Agencies): Rafael Nadal was given a huge scare by Fabio Fognini before eventually coming through a three-set tussle in the third round of the Madrid Open. The Spaniard was given arguably his toughest clay-court test of the season by the Italian before eventually coming through 7-6 3-6 6-4 in just under three hours. It remains to be seen how much the win takes out of Nadal who next faces Nick Kyrgios. bids Arsenal boost top-four hopes ISLfortonewinvite teams

Mesut Ozil (centre) is tackled by Jack Stephens (left) as he makes his way into the Southampton penalty area. L o n d o n, M ay 1 1 (Agencies): Alexis Sanchez scored his 20th goal of the Premier League campaign as Arsenal won 2-0 at Southampton on Wednesday to keep their hopes of a top-four finish alive. Sanchez opened the scoring on the hour at St Mary’s before substitute Olivier Giroud made the game safe with a header seven minutes from time. Victory took Arsene Wenger’s side above Manchester United into fifth place in the table and left them three points below Manchester City, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League qualifying berth. Arsenal must now win their three remaining games and hope City or third-place Liverpool drop points if they are to secure a 20th successive season of Champions League football.

Having previously taken two points from a possible 24 in away games against current top-half teams, victory was a welcome tonic. However, it came at the cost of an injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has found form in a new wing-back role. Arsenal went into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Manchester United and procured the first sight of goal, with Aaron Ramsey firing wide after a foray by Oxlade-Chamberlain. Oxlade-Chamberlain gave way in the 36th minute, with Hector Bellerin taking his place. Gabbiadini curled a free-kick wide before Cech was called into action again, touching a powerful Nathan Redmond effort over the crossbar. Sanchez had been

quiet, but with 15 minutes on the clock in the second period he made the breakthrough. Picked out by Mesut Ozil, he cut inside Saints centre-backs Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens, leaving both on the deck, before finishing crisply. Chile inter national Sanchez, 28, has now scored 20 goals in a league season for the first time in a career that has also featured spells with Udinese and Barcelona. Giroud made sure of victory in the 83rd minute, nodding home after Ramsey had headed the ball across the box following more good work from Sanchez. Arsenal saw out victory with little trouble to complete a first league win at Southampton since their famous ‘Invincibles’ season of 2003-04.

Wayne Rooney L o n d o n , M ay 1 1 (Agencies): Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney wants to remain at Old Trafford next season despite his lack of playing time under manager Jose Mourinho, he said on Wednesday. Rooney, 31, has made only 22 starts across all competitions this season and has been linked with a move to either the Chinese Super League or former club Everton. When the subject of his future arose during a

press conference to preview Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Celta Vigo, he said: “I’ve been at this club 13 years. Of course I want to play football.” Pressed as to whether his preference would be to continue playing for United, he replied: “Of course.” Rooney became United’s all-time leading scorer this season, but he is expected to drop to the bench against Celta at Old Trafford, where Mourinho’s side will be defending a 1-0 lead from last week’s first leg. He adopted a philosophical stance when asked about his new status as a squad player, but again reiterated that he would like to be playing more regularly. “Football changes. You have different periods, different challenges in your career,” said the England striker.
