HC directs Police deptt on Gr-IV appointments

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 0 (NPN): Responding to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the appointments of 239 persons allegedly non-indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland, appointed to Grade-IV posts, the Gauhati High Court (GHC) has directed government of Nagaland “not to make any recruitment in Grade-IV post of different trade in the police department without advertisement and from people who are not indigenous inhabitants of the state.” The order was issued after the petitioner (ST Yapang) filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the appointments of 239 alleged non-indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland who were appointed in Grade-IV post of different trades in various establishments of the police department. Further the petitioner pointed out that the appointments were in violation of Notification No.APPT-18/6/67 dated September 19,1987 issued by the chief secretary, which stipulated that 100%

of non-tehcnical Class-III and IV posts and 80% of all other posts be reserved for recruitment or persons who are indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland. Further, the petitioner contended that as per RTI, all 239 appointees (respondent No.29 to 259) were “all outsiders” who were appointed without having the posts advertised and also by ignoring the 1987 notification issued by the chief secretary. On the basis of the above, the petitioner concluded that the appointments were “illegal and deserves to be quashed.” The counsel for the petitioner also prayed that while awaiting return of the notice, the respondents be directed “not to appoint or make any recruitment in the police department without issuing advertisement.” On the other hand, the counsel for the respondent (state government’s advocate) accepted the notice of the respondents (no. 1 to 16) and submitted that “interim prayer may be considered on the returnable date since there are contradictory facts

IMPHAL, May 10: After spearheading 600 days of anti-tribal bill agitation, the Joint Action Committee Against Anti-Tribal Bills (JACAATB) on Wednesday has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Manipur government to end the agitation against the passage of three bills to address ILPS by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 31, 2015. It was also agreed that the eight of the nine dead bodies lying in the morgue for the last 600 days would be buried on or before May 25. One of the deceased was buried by the family in December last year. The MoU, which contained nine-point agreement , was signed at a joint meeting between a delegation of Manipur government led by chief secretary O Nabakishore and representatives of JACAATB, which was also witnessed by union ministry of home affairs under secretary AN Jha. “The state government honours the sentiments of the tribal people of Manipur,” the MoU stated.

DoSE to introduce local languages in schools D I M A P U R , M AY 1 0 (NPN): With a view to effectively implement the three-language policy and to preserve, protect and promote the local Naga languages, the Department of School Education (DoSE) has decided that every child would be encouraged and given opportunity to learn his or her mother tongue in the school. The decision comes following recommendations of the committee constituted by the state government to examine the present scenario on implementation of the three-language policy and make recommendations and modalities for introduction of MILs/local dialects in schools in Nagaland. In an official notification, the principal secretary, FP Solo, said that from the academic session of 2018 all the schools, both government and private, would introduce the local language of the linguistic area where the school is located upto the primary or elementary level depending upon the level of the development of the local language starting from Class-I in schools where the local language has not yet been introduced. As per the notifica-

tion, every school would introduce at least one local language in the school. However, depending on the enrolment, schools are at liberty to introduce more languages other than the language of the local linguistic area. The government has encouraged all the Naga tribes, including the subtribes, to develop text books and introduce their mother tongues upto the elementary education, i.e. Class-VIII. However, all the existing text books of local languages being used in different classes would be reviewed and updated strictly in conformity with an approved curriculum for Mother Tongue to be developed by SCERT, Nagaland, which is the Academic Authority of Nagaland upto elementary education. To ensure and maintain uniformity and comparable standards, the notification stated that the SCERT with the assistance of different language officers would develop a prototype of textbooks in English, which would then be translated into local languages. Those series of text books would be titled ‘Naga Heritage Studies’ and used upto Class-VIII.

Introduction of a local language in schools at different levels upto ClassVIII would be considered only after the SCERT certifies that textbooks of that particular language have been developed as per the approved curriculum for Mother Tongue. Similarly, a local language would be considered for introduction at secondary level only after the textbooks of that particular language have been developed as per the MIL framework for secondary level to be certified by the NBSE. A State Institute of Naga Languages would be set up under the Directorate of School Education by redeployment of the existing officers, language officers and staff to: a) Systematically develop all the Naga languages and sub-dialects in collaboration with Nagaland University and different language Boards/Committees; b) Regulate and monitor development of text books for local languages in collaboration with SCERT and NBSE; c) Ensure uniformity and prescribe standards/syllabus for issue of certificate and diploma by different

literature Boards/Committees; d) Take up any activity that may be entrusted to it by the Govt. for preservation, promotion and development of Naga languages. Further, the language teachers would be appointed as per the NCTE norms. Till the proposed State Institute of Naga Languages prescribed the syllabus, the other literature boards/committees could adopt the curriculum and syllabus of Ura Academy for conduct of certificate and diploma course of one year duration each, as a stop gap arrangement. In government schools where local languages are taught, there would be no deployment of additional language teachers on account of introduction of local languages. The existing teachers could be trained and deployed as language teachers in addition to their normal duties, till trained language teachers are appointed after rationalization and redeployment of teachers in government schools. Private schools could also adopt similar strategy. Due to existence of multi languages, different (Cont’d on p-5)

State BJP questions AICC official’s claims

DIMAPUR, MAY 10 (NPN): Nagaland BJP unit has refuted the claims made All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge for Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, Dr. K. Jayakumar, over the rise in attacks on religious minorities like killings and burning of Churches in India. In this regard, BJP media cell has asked Dr. Jayakumar “to produce specific proofs of where and when it occurred.” BJP said Dr. Jayakumar should apologise to the people if he failed to produce facts, rather than speaking vaguely to fool and mislead the public. BJP unit reminded all that its stand and agenda is for development and development for all. BJP unit also reminded the Congress that it was the BJP government which had created the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Department of North East Region. “The Congress agenda is to divide and rule and during the Congress rule the minorities, OBC especially Tribal people suffered untold miseries and still remain backward,” BJP unit stated. It was the BJP that declared “the uniqueness of Naga history” and was sincere for Naga political solution, the unit said. With regard to Good Governance day, which is observed on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday (December 25), the BJP unit said one cannot change the date though it coincided with the Christian festival (Christmas day). It however, said Christian dominated states observed Good Governance day either before or after (Cont’d on p-8) Christmas day. (Cont’d on p-8)

Therefore, order stated that “this court has no hesitation in directing the respondents not to make any recruitment in Grade-IV post of different trade in the police department without advertisement and from people who are not indigenous inhabitants of the state.” It may be recalled that the police department had come under strident attacks from various quarters over the issue of excess/backdoor appointments. While ACAUT, Students’ Unions and Civil Society Groups attacked the department for excess/backdoor appointments, the nascent Nagaland Congress (NLC) had raised the issue of ‘non-local’ (nonindigenous) candidates cornering a big chunk of the jobs.

As per Common Article 3 of

the Geneva Convention, he said the humanitarian laws encompassed non-international armed conflicts and most of today’s conflicts, including those in the North East, were under this category in nature. He also underscored the need to promote nonstate actors like International Red Cross Society (IRCS) in conflict areas, saying they cannot work independently in highlighting violation of human rights. Further, the resource persons dwelt on various aspect and provisions of the Geneva and The Hague Conventions from where oppressed movements could draw recourse. ‘Naga society at the crossroads’: Expounding on “gender prerogative-respecting women”, Kohima Science College principal, (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

The journalistic journey was led by Fr. Jonas Kerketta, coordinator of mass media in the Salesian Province of Dimapur and editor of Dimapur Links. On the first day, the students were made to understand the importance of print journalism as well as to trace the long history of newspaper journalism. Elements and characteristics of news as well as the categories of news reports were dealt with on the second day. The input session on successful scripting of the first paragraph of the news report-lead, was examined by the students with copies of newspapers in their hand. On the third day the animator insisted on the idea of

Participants of the programme. ‘learning by doing’. Six sample ‘newspapers’– Dimapur Currents, Morning Dew, Cow’s Ambulance and The Evergreen Express were created by the six groups into which the participants were divided. In the concluding session the animator highlighted the fact that political parties who were complacent and did not publicize their good works sufficiently, paid the price of disastrous defeats in elections. On the other hand, their opponents made aggressive use of the media to highlight

the failures of the previous regimes and made much hype of their own future achievements. The gullible electorates believed them and voted them to power. Thus the adage “Publish or perish” still holds good, he added. Fr. Jonas further encouraged the participants to begin their journalistic sojourn by contributing news, views and articles to their own institutional newsletters and journals and then venture out as freelance journalists writing to public newspapers and journals.

G U WA H AT I , M AY 10 (AGENCIES): Two persons have been detained on Wednesday in connection with the sensational robbery case in a well known shop in the heart of Guwahati on Tuesday evening. In a joint operation by Guwahati and Hojai Police, the duos have been detained from their residence in Nandapur area of Hojai. They have been identified as Premjit Sinha and Neelkamal Singh. Premjit Sinha was the security personnel of the MP Jewellers, who was on leave since 8th May. A gang of four robbers walked into the shop on busy Srimanta Sankar Dev Path shortly after 7 PM and ordered employees and customers to move to Correspondent one side.

I M P H A L , M ay 1 0 (NPN): Normal life in Thoubal and Kakching districts of Manipur was hit on Wednesday with the commencement of indefinite bandh called by the Thoubal District MP Candidature Demand Committee. The committee has been pressing for nomination of a “deserving person” from the eight constituencies spread over Thoubal, Kakching and Jiribam districts as the Rajya Sabha MP. Public of Heirok, Khangabok, Wangjing Tentha, Wabagai, Kakching, Sugnu, Hiyanglam and Jiribam Assembly constituencies, which fall in the valley districts of Thoubal, Kakching and Jiribam, feel wronged as they cannot contest any of the state’s two Lok Sabha

seats - Inner Manipur or Outer Manipur even though they are allowed to cast vote in the Outer Manipur which is reserved for the scheduled tribe. Manipur’s Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant after MP Haji Abdul Salam passed away February this year. Salam, who represented Wabagai Assembly constituency a number of times, was nominated as the Rajya Sabha MP by the previous C o n g r e s s g ove r n m e n t following popular demand. The indefinite bandh commenced Wednesday morning at 5 a.m at Thoubal and Kakching while there was no report of enforcing the strike in Jiribam district. In Thoubal and Kakching, hundreds of volunteers enforced the bandh by blocking roads and prevented movement of all kinds of vehicles.

I M P H A L , M ay 1 0 (NPN): Chiefs of villages from remote hill areas of Manipur and leaders of hill-based civil societies Wednesday met Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and aired their grievances. As announced earlier, Singh met with village chiefs of hill districts and leaders of civil society organizations at his official residence today. The chief minister had announced, during his recent visit to Ukhrul district on April 11, that the 10th day of every month would be reserved for meeting with the leaders of civil society organizations and village chiefs of hill areas. Singh attended to the grievances of around 500 people representing around 50 different civil society organizations and villages from 8 a.m to 1 p.m. During the meeting with the chief minister,

chiefs from villages located close to the international border with Myanmar stated they have been protecting the border pillars at their own risk. Chief of Satang M a r i n g, a v i l l a ge i n Tengnoupal district close to the Indo-Myanmar border, informed the chief minister that villagers at the border areas have been looking after the border pillar 81 to 88 near their respective villages and drew the attention of the government in protecting the pillars as well as improvement of the road connectively. Calling for better propagation and imparting teachings of Buddha, he also stressed on the need for preservation and promotion of Buddhist religious culture. “Namsai district is the abode of Theravada Buddhism but people do not practice the principles of Buddhism but indulge in rampant hunting of wild animals,” the deputy chief minister said and called for a ban in hunting. He advocated institutionalization of the Buddhist Viharas so that it could diversify its services as in health and education sectors instead of remaining just centres of religious teachings.

potential. “Unless and until every section of the society is developed equally ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikash’ cannot be a reality and it is the duty of every able bodied individual to help them to live a dignified life”, he added. The Chief Minister also informed the government is going provide Rs 1000 as a monthly stipend to each specially abled citizen of the state from next year. DoSE to introduce local languages... (From p-8) level and less developed nature of the local languages, English would continue to be the medium of instructions in all the schools in the state. However, teachers are encouraged to explain the difficult concepts and scientific terms in the mother tongues of the children. With the introduction of local languages from Class-I from the academic session of 2018, the notification said Alt. English would be abolished in a phased manner starting from Class-V from 2018, and Class-VI to VIII from 2019 in all the schools in the State. In urban areas in addition to the local language, Naga Heritage Studies may be used for nonlocal students (students who are from outside the linguistic group of the local area). Only qualified and trained candidates from nationally recognised institutions would be considered for appointment as Hindi Teachers after proper screening and clearing State Hindi Teacher Eligibility Test. The State government would devise some innovative plan to improve, monitor and check the proficiency of Hindi teachers and learning outcome of students in Hindi from time to time. Students would be encouraged to speak only Hindi during

Hindi class and even in the school and outside in lieu of Nagamese. All stakeholders, including principal director, school education, director, SCERT, chairman, NBSE, SMD, SSA/RMSA, DEOs, DDEOs, SDEOs, principals, headmasters and heads of schools have been directed to initiate immediate necessary action for implementation of the instructions contained in the notification from 2018. The notification, which has the approval of the cabinet vide Cabinet Cell Memo dated April 26, 2017, would come into immediate effect. Committee findings I) Contrary to national three-language policy, English, in lieu of mother tongue, is being used as the medium of instructions in almost all the schools in Nagaland; II) Though Hindi as national language is taught as a compulsory subject upto class-VIII, the level of proficiency of Naga students in reading, writing and speaking in Hindi is low. III) 90% of Naga students opt for Alt. English as many schools especially private schools have not

introduced mother tongues even in places where local languages have been developed and introduced to higher levels of studies; IV) At present only 4 Naga dialects, i.e Ao, Lotha, Sumi & Tenyidie are being taught beyond Class-VIII; V) There is no uniformity and comparable standards of text books of different Naga dialects; VI) Some literature committees/boards have developed manuscripts and introduced their languages in higher classes. But many of them were found to have been developed without any approved curriculum and syllabus; VII) Though Naga languages are in the list of endangered languages, many Naga children, according to a survey conducted by SCERT, are unable to speak their mother tongue and communicate with each other in Nagamese or English even at home; and VIII) Children can understand better if taught in mother tongues. But due to less developed nature of the local dialects teachinglearning cannot be transacted through mother tongues.

opinion/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post

W

hen Nagaland chief minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu visited Manipur on May 9 and was warmly received by chief minister N. Biren Singh met in Imphal, it signalled the end of the so-called ‘cold war’ between the two neighbours who share a contiguous tribal territory across the inter-state border. It may be recalled that for the better part of a decade, neighbourly relations between the two states dipped to its nadir. The problems between the two states accentuated with the issue of integration of Naga contiguous areas within one administrative umbrella (although this is not specific to Manipur) while the valley community vowed to oppose any attempt to “disintegrate” Manipur territory. The spate of bandhs and blockades along the national highways passing across Naga inhabited areas seriously affected the state. In fact, fraternal relations between Nagas and Meities had dipped so low that it seemed there was no other way after all the bridges were burnt. To add to the already flammable situation, chief ministers of Nagaland(from 2003 onwards till 2017) and Ibobi the three-time chief minister of Manipur, played their parts in widening the gulf between Nagas and Meiteis in Manipur for ideological and other reasons. In fact, Nagas had gone to the extent of declaring Ibobi as anti-Naga because of all the measures that were seen to be against the hill people and severed all whatever contacts with the state. The reasons were many such as the controversial bills passed by the Manipur assembly in 2015. The open yet undeclared war came when the then Ibobi government created seven news districts that caused the cinders of communal hatred to be set ablaze. It was like the last bridge between the two communities being burned down probably for political mileage. The creation of seven new districts, some of which were carved out of Naga areas only inflamed the Nagas who responded with total blockade on the state along the entire national highways from November 1,2016 It was unthinkable that a Naga chief minister would ever meet with a Meitei chief minister and talk about peace and fraternity because the issues were like east and west. The Naga People’s Front(NPF) stands for integration of Naga contiguous areas while the Congress under Ibobi and even BJP, before election were on the same page but not in the same chapter. After the election Biren Singh BJP MLA and a former Congress minister and reportedly a hardliner against Naga demands, became chief minister of the BJP-led coalition. The blockade was lifted and things looked hunky dory after NPF joined the Biren Singh ministry. The changed political equation seemed to be a miracle. It was welcome since too much bitterness and hatred had come in between. The Nagaland chief minister, who is also the NPF president (head of all NPF state units) Dr. Shürhozelie, visited Manipur and Biren Singh welcomed his neighbour very warmly. The smiles though genuine, were like a cease fire. That’s because the contentious issues have not been discussed not resolved. What is important is that the first welcome step to mend the bridge and ease tensions has been achieved. On this, the open renewal of friendship would help to create a conducive climate for change and that is what is most needed.

DailyDevotion Take the Initiative …add to your faith virtue… —2 Peter 1:5 Add means that we have to do something. We are in danger of forgetting that we cannot do what God does, and that God will not do what we can do. We cannot save nor sanctify ourselves— God does that. But God will not give us good habits or character, and He will not force us to walk correctly before Him. We have to do all that ourselves. We must “work out” our “own salvation” which God has worked in us (Philippians 2:12).Add means that we must get into the habit of doing things, and in the initial stages that is difficult. To take the initiative is to make a beginning— to instruct yourself in the way you must go. Beware of the tendency to ask the way when you know it perfectly well. Take the initiative— stop hesitating— take the first step. Be determined to act immediately in faith on what God says to you when He speaks, and never reconsider or change your initial decisions. If you hesitate when God tells you to do something, you are being careless, spurning the grace in which you stand. Take the initiative yourself, make a decision of your will right now, and make it impossible to go back. Burn your bridges behind you, saying, “I will write that letter,” or “Iwill pay that debt”; and then do it! Make it irrevocable. We have to get into the habit of carefully listening to God about everything, forming the habit of finding out what He says and heeding it. If, when a crisis comes, we instinctively turn to God, we will know that the habit has been formed in us. We have to take the initiative where we are, not where we have not yet been.

Why Kashmir remains disturbed

hether stone pelting in Kashmir is at the behest of Pakistan or it is a response to fundamentalists’ call, the fact remains that the valley is disturbed. Scores of schools have been burnt and there is a fear in the mind of students that they would be punished if they were to attend classes. The separatists are said to be leading a movement to boycott the studies. The result is that the students are finding it hard to prepare and appear in exams which the rest of the country is having peacefully. The separatists should realize that a political movement cannot and should not make students helpless and let them suffer. The fallout of the agitation is that the tourists’ inflow has reduced. So much so, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has led processions through the streets of Srinagar to assure the tourists that they would be protected in all eventualities. Still whatever the assurance, the tourists have come to prefer some different hill stations to Kashmir. It is understandable from the tourists’ point

of view but in the process the Dal Lake shikaras and Nagin Bagh’s dongas are not getting business. An ordinary Kashmiri is suffering. Even otherwise, the state’s economy has been badly hit. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti does not seem to have any clue to the situation. She has said many a time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only person who can solve the crisis in Kashmir. She is probably underlining the alliance between her People’s Democratic Party and the BJP which is ruling at the centre. New Delhi should, however, analyze why a person like Shabbir Shah, once pro-India, has turned himself to be proazadi. Probably, he does not find the space which he direly needs to direct his affairs in the valley. The BJP has had no contact with persons like him. The same is the case with Yashin Malik who wanted a solution within Indian Union. But New Delhi has stretched Article 370 in such a way that the power has come to be concentrated at New Delhi. Kashmir also feels strongly about New Delhi’s

withdraw the act, it would placate the Kashmiri on the one hand and make the security forces more responsible on the other. The National Conference waged a long war to get rid of Maharaja Hari Singh and had an icon like Sheikh Abdullah to provide secular and democratic rule to the state. But the party suffered defeat in the assembly polls due to its proximity to New Delhi. The PDP won because its founder, Mufti Mohammad Sayyed, kept distance from New Delhi, without alienating it. The Kashmiris have voted for the untried PDP-BJP alliance because the combination gave them a feeling of identity. Omar Farooq Abdullah had to pay the price of National Conference’s image of being pro-Delhi. Kashmir’s links with India are too close to challenge it beyond a point. Still the opposition, however small, gives the Kashmiris a vicarious satisfaction of defying New Delhi. Lord Cyril Radcliffe did not attach any importance to Kashmir. He was a judge in London who drew the line between India and

Pakistan to establish two separate countries. He told me many years later during an interview that he never imagined that Kashmir would assume as much importance as it did. I recalled this instance when I was in Srinagar a couple of years ago to preside over the first anniversary of an Urdu magazine. Urdu has been unceremoniously ousted from all the states, including Punjab where it was the main language until some years ago. In fact, the language lost its importance in India soon after Pakistan made it the national language. Normalcy is also a state of mind. The Kashmiris must feel themselves that their identity is not under attack and that New Delhi realizes the importance of what the Kashmiris desire. What New Delhi has to appreciate is that the Kashmiris’ desire to distance themselves from India may not be considered any meaningful transfer of power from New Delhi to Srinagar. Yet the impression that the Kashmiris rule themselves has to be sustained whatever the cost.

s every literate person knows, agriculture is the backbone of the economy, we should start our first step by flourishing our agricultural sector which wouldn’t be so costly and tiresome to bear with if without determination. The government should take the little initiative of imparting the farmers with revolutionized scientific methods to yeild high productivity. A little effort in making the availability of revolutionized machines like tractors, mowers, ploughers etc. on a rental or ownership basis would be applauded. The concerned authorities should see to it to happen that the farmers are provided with the best quality seeds and more ecofriendly pesticides and manure. In the meantime the respective govt. authorities should organize schemes or programs to attract the aspiring local entrpreneurs or corporations to set up small scale industries at the initial stages. We could have a range of agrobased industries to boost our economy and provide employment like producing our own cotton, silk, fibers and textile industries so that in the long run we could produce our own clothes for us to wear, we

I

n the beginning God created Heaven and Earth (Gen 1:1) and all things were made by him, and without him nothing was made that has been made (John 1:3). In olden times, the Lord said unto Abraham, get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred and from thy Father’s house unto a land I will show thee (Gen 12:1). The Lord God called Abraham out of Haran or Charran to be his chosen man and to make his posterities God’s chosen people. God said, and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing and I will bless them that bless thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed (Gen 12:2-3, KJV.) Speaking from the Christian context, I want to say that towards the close or end of the age God called out the Nagas to be his people. God appointed Nagaland to put His name among the hundreds of nations of the world. Our elders who coined the words “Nagaland for Christ” were not emanated from their wisdom alone. But it

could also utilize our abundance of variety of fruits as resources. We can help the entrepreneurs with strategic ways to create products and to export it in various districts or beyond. If we could produce other food grains like wheat and barley etc. in our hills and plains then it will be productive because bread, flour and other food products derives from such and not rice. In our land of “Abundant Green”, the locals should also zeal the interest to rear wide range of livestocks in bulk as it serves many purposes. We could depend on cows, yaks, goats etc for milk. With this we could also set up household or small factories to produce cheese, butter, curd and other dairy products for our consumption and to export it as well. We can also rear sheeps for wool and meat, and other livestock for hide, hairs etc. as we need the products deriving from them in our daily lives in the form of leather, brushes, wax etc. Since we have abundant rubber plantations we have to find ways to utilize it and not just to export the latex to other States. For one instance we could set up factories to produce rubber shoes

with convienently affordable price tag so that the people could obtain it easily even if the quality could not match with that of the foriegn goods. And in order to create a demand for our local footwears, we could create running events like marathon for the general public and cross country race and other sporting events for schools in district and state level. We could also promote and advertise the universal benefits of jogging and running to reduce stress and boost our metabolism. There are also many other day to day needed products derived from rubber so we should instead of sitting idle push ourselves to every possibility we have the opprotunity to grasp. The govt. officials should start giving back to the people by performing their responsible duties by feeling contributive in our developmental process. They should also make the people aware of the importance of bees for sustaining our Floura and Fauna kingdom and help growers with measures to grow and harvest honeybees effectively. Once we have multiple means of production then we can target markets and reach out for more

Nagaland for Christ

is my firm belief that they (elders) were inspired and taught by the Holy Spirit to coin the wonderful name or phrase of Nagaland. So far as my understanding goes, there were and are many human races in the world, but there was no human race which was so blessed, so loved and protected by God like the Israelites. And there was no human race which was so disobedient and so defiant and ungrateful towards their God like the Israelites. Because of their disobedience and unfaithfulness, the Lord God chastised the Israelites in various forms some of which were so devastating and grievous for the people of Israel, yet still God did not forsook them completely. They (Israelites) were gathered from different parts of the world in the middle of the 20th century. And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whether I have driven them, and I’ll bring them again to their folds and they shall be fruitful and increase. And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither

shall they be lacking, said the Lord (Jeremiah 23:3-4). But the vast expansive country called Canaan God given to Joshua and his people had already had been already shrank into a small nation. Into this God appointed USA to help and protect Israel and the Israelites\. Now they (Israelites) were doing fine inspite of the hostile people around them. (Jeremiah 23:3-4) Likewise we the Naga Christians have so many grievous commissions and omissions towards the Lord Jehovah yet God extremely loves the Nagas. He has not forsaken us. We all know that there are so many nominal Christians among the Nagas. Inspite of that the Nagas are chanting His praises from every corner now and then which pleases the Lord God (Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord.) Basing on this faith I sincerely believe that no heavy natural calamities will fall on Nagaland inspite of heavy calamities predicted and suggested by some Nagas. Coming again to the Naga national movement it is my firm conviction

consumers. With rapid industrialization there would be force emergence of other mechanisms like advertisement firm, accountant firms, online stores, delivery and transportation services, patent and legal firms etc. And as modernasition hits one system, it will ripple its way towards every system and it will lead to more growth of our economy. These initial measures to uplift our ecoconomy before the arrival of need of sophiscated technologies to sky rocket our economy, wouldn’t drain out the State’s treasuries as some govt. officials may fear. It will befall at the cost of some few hundred Crores at the expense of actually doing some productive thing for our present and future. And to some govt. officials who feel (excuses) that development is not possible without the Naga solution, one can only rightfully question them what the purpose is for the existence of the State government, then. Sovereignity is sovereignity and development is development and if the govt. officials cannot differentiate between the two then it is only right that they resign from their responsibilities and give

that the Naga independent movement had been inspired by God. If it is the purpose of God it shall be fulfilled. The Lord of host hath sworn, saying, surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand (Isaiah 14:24). Considering from all the angles we are made to believe that the Naga Independence Movement is the purpose of God. Therefore I personally believe that Nagaland shall be one day or the other become sovereign independent nation even at the least some days before the second coming of Jesus. Some about three decades, one Desan Tagore in his book titled “Israel in India” predicted that one day Nagas shall achieve sovereignty, if not political sovereignty they shall attain spiritual sovereignty. Let us hope Nagaland shall be sovereign nation one day. Many people think that the story of Naga independence movement is a fairy tale. But our God is wonderful God. Nothing is impossible for him. He is the dispenser of the destinies of all nations and people. Believe it. A.Z. Jami, senior Naga nationalist

some other the chance to develop the living condition and struggle for existence for some, in this drastically hard economy because without economic sustainability how can a person manage to survive to live in Nagaland before or after, any kind of Naga solution. Although this is case sensitive, from a rational point of view- if without our basic rights as a human being, like liberty, econimic rights, equality, human rights, freedom of speech and expression, fundamental and civil rights, right to fraternity, right for development and life etc. what good is any government. Instead of being chained to the rhythm of the pattern of the system that has enslaved us, what if we could examine and understand the pattern by means of “critical reasoning” and work as one (which is not an impossible thing), collectively for the emergence of a harmonious Naga nation without being solely influenced by all the atrocities and policies of the past and narrowing our reasoning capacity. Reader’s Post Sir,

Crpf camp to Kohima Heliport Lerie Road

In the year 1995, when I first shifted to live in my present home at Lerie colony from my rented house at Kenouzou, Kohima, there was only a new approach like road from CRPF Camp to Daklu ground. We the people of Lerie struggled for good roads i.e., we organized social works on every non working Saturdays, 2nd and 4th Saturdays, and we would even provide necessary things to the workers, even tea and biscuits, but sadly it never last long and all the hard work of the people just washes away when rainy seasons come. Sometimes I even thought that there is no genuine government in Nagaland, especially for Lerie colony. Every year our colony community would contribute money for the maintenance of the roads. Some few years back Government of Nagaland constructed/developed Daklu ground as heliport ground, for this reason the government tried to maintain the roads but seemed very temporary and it would hardly last for some couple of months. But luckily and so privilege as an individual and as a community to have Shri Vilelie Khamo, first class contractor, living in our midst. We do not know each other personally but through his works and actions we all know that he is a man of dignity and honorable and must be well appreciated for all his doings. Despite of all his great doings in the past for the community he is never tired and cannot stop doing good for the Lerie community. Even at present he has started his great work i.e., black topping from CRPF Camp to heliport junction. And the work just does not seem ordinary but is a transforming the community completely and making it a beautiful place. I pray that God will continue to shower His blessings upon him and his family. Interestingly, last week it was reported that rats had finished nine lakh litres of alcohol seized by police. But later, the police headquarters refuted the claim and ordered a probe into it. Reacting to the attack, the Mishra said: “The man suddenly attacked me and hit me on my neck before he was caught by the people here.” Mishra then appealed to his supporters not to retaliate violently. “I will leave drinking water if any of my supporters retaliate violently to the attacker or any other AAP supporter,” Mishra said, as he lay on the ground. In “dry Bihar”, as the state government prefers to call it, while 10,000 litres of illicit liquor was destroyed on Tuesday, the very next day, they destroyed another 18,000 litres of liquor seized by the Excise Department. The total 28,000 litre liquor -- valued at Rs 2.5 crore -- destroyed by the authorities was seized from Vaishali and Patna districts of the state. The seized liquor,

prohibition was imposed on April 5, 2016 in Bihar, the government has seized around 9.15 lakh litres of liquor, out of which eight lakh litres is still in the store rooms of various police stations in the state. Police officers from a large number of police stations have conveyed to top police officials the problem of space crunch in storing such huge quantities of liquor. Over 45,000 people have been arrested in a year in Bihar for violating the liquor prohibition law imposed by the Janata DalUnited-led grand alliance government in the state. Bihar had acted tough against the violators of prohibition law, Excise and Prohibition Minister Abdul Jalil Mastan said. “The law enforcement agencies have been directed to act tough against those violating the law.” The state police have raided 2,18,722 locations and seized liquor valued at Rs 50 crore the last year alone, a state Excise and Prohibition Department official said. According to a police report, 40,413 cases were registered for prohibition violations.

C h e n na i , M ay 1 0 (IANS): The whereabouts of Kolkata High Court judge C.S. Karnan, sentenced to jail for six months by the Supreme Court, remained a mystery on Wednesday, even as a West Bengal police team reached here. Some sources in Chennai said he had left the State Guest House for the famed Shiva temple in Srikalahasti town in Andhra Pradesh. But an official at the temple, about 120 km from here, told IANS over telephone that there was no trace of the judge. “He did not arrive yesterday or today. We have no idea if he will reach the temple tomorrow,” the official said. Another temple official had earlier said that the judge was likely to reach the Andhra town on Wednesday evening and offer prayers on Thursday morning. Justice Karnan checked into the Chennai Guest House on Tuesday after leaving his home in Kolkata. But he has not officially vacated the guest house room and his bill remains to be settled.

Prodigals’ Home Dimapur director, K. Ela, stated that children were not living in a safe society with many children running away from home to avoid sexual abuse and violence. Speaking on “child rights protection”, Ela questioned why children needed protection from adults when adults were supposed to protect them. She attributed lack of political will, inadequate budgeting for children, broken homes, bad parenting, weak support system, ignorance, slow justice delivery system and substance abuse among others to creating an unsafe environment for children. Further, Ela termed as “biggest shame in the Naga society” the illegal practice of “child domestic worker” in Nagaland. She said that such practice not only exploited the child’s labour but deprived the child’s rights, future, opportunities and even identity. She questioned the participants why a child had to be trafficked in the name

and let the world know that we Nagas love peace,” he said. MLA pointed out that GPRN/NSCN has signed and affirmed not to use antipersonnel landmine, to stop violence against women during conflict and against recruitment of children below 18 years while NSCN (I-M) was yet to sign against recruitment of children below 18 years. (From p-8) Dr. Anungla Aier, remarked that Naga society was at the crossroads of tradition and modernity and there was a need to re-examine the cultural precondition of stringent patriarchal values. Gender issue, she said, remained one of the most critical but least understood in Naga society. She articulated that despite ‘gender’ being a neutral term, the narrative was confined and revolved around the female sex as inequality and imbalance of power was deeply embedded in the social, economic and political structure of the society, calling for reexamining the gender equation from a ‘human rights view’, not traditional. Dr. Anungla also pointed out various forms of gender discrimination in the Naga customary practices. The key challenge to secure women’s rights, Dr. Anungla said was to break down the structural obstacles build around the traditional practices, which she maintained could be done with active participation of men and through creation of an enabling environment in

then it is good... and if they cannot, the court doors will still remain open.” The Jamiat leader said neither the minority community nor others should play politics on the issue. Under Triple Talaq, a Muslim man can divorce his wife by orally pronouncing the word talaq (divorce) three times. “I am surprised that Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) is saying that Muslim women are being meted out injustice. Isn’t this politics? This is also politics. You are doing politics over Muslim issues,” Madani said. Citing a survey, he said there were more di-

vorces among the Hindus than the Muslims in the country. “Muslims have been living in this country for more than 1,000 years. Had Muslims women been oppressed for so long, voices would have been raised earlier too. “An impression has been created that every Muslim man divorces his wife. Muslims have been projected in a poor light. This is not true; this is wrong. Divorces happen in one in thousand cases,” the Jamiat leader said. He said divorce is not a one-sided affair in the M u s l i m c o m m u n i t y. “There is also a provision for the woman to take divorce on her own.” Asked if he would meet the Prime Minister, Madani said: “If he calls me, I’ll definitely go... I won’t go on my own.” On the issue of the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) in Assam, Madani said the state government should respect the Assam Accord and strictly follow its terms and conditions.

Ocean Dipole (IOD) activities. The pattern suggests that a moderate or strong El Nino and a positive IOD results in good rainfall. El Nino is a climatic phenomenon which is the warm phase of the cycle in the Pacific Ocean and IOD is a climate event occurring over the equatorial Indian Ocean. Both impact the monsoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier in April predicted a 96 per cent monsoon for 2017 season average, with a moderate error estimated at ‘plus-minus five per cent’ of the Long Period Average (LPA). On Tuesday, some reports claimed IMD predicting that the monsoon could be above normal and bring 100 per cent rainfall instead of 96 per cent predicted earlier.

He said it had already been proven in 2010 that EVMs could be tampered with, which led to the use of VVPATs. “Then why is the Election Commission challenging the theory of EVMhacking?” he asked.

New Delhi, May 10 (IANS): Jamiat Ulama-iHind President Maulana Syed Arshad Madani on Wednesday opposed what he said was judicial interference in Muslims’ religous affairs and said a solution to the triple talaq issue should be found outside the court. “Instead of court interference in religious affairs (of Muslims), the issue should be discussed between Islamic scholars,” he said. He said the higher judiciary should put forth its objections to Triple Talaq before the religious scholars and ask them to find a solution to the contentious issue. “The court can have objections to certain points; it should ask us to find a solution. If the Supreme Court can say that the issue of Babri Masjid (in Ayodhaya in Uttar Pradesh) should be resolved outside the court, why not this (talaq) issue be solved by the ulemas (Islamic scholars)?” he asked. US flays Russian build-up in Baltics

her commitment to the Tibetan cause. “We were warmly welcomed by hundreds of children today during a visit to the Tibet Children’s Village, a remarkable and inspiring school dedicated to educating the next generation of Tibetans living in Dharamshala,” the 77year-old Minority Leader of the US House of Representatives said. The delegation met the Tibetan Government in exile, Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay and members of Tibetan Parliamentarians to discuss the US and international support for efforts designed to help Tibetans maintain their religion, culture, identity and to ensure their human

him to push through economic reforms for reviving an economy beset by high unemployment and sluggish growth. The Socialists, whose term in government comes to an end in tandem with the departure of President Francois Hollande, have traditionally disputed power with the center-right for the past half century. The main right-wing party, The Republicans, is also striving to come to terms with the new political landscape and will be working to try to cling on to its dominant role too. Francois Baroin, head of the Republicans’ parliamentary election team, said on Tuesday they would abandon key proposals that their unsuccessful presidential candidate, Francois Fillon, stood for. The party was due later on Wednesday to work further on what Baroin said would be a revamped program for the National Assembly election. On both sides of the traditional divide, the signs so far are that the large parties which have long dominated are struggling to maintain leverage over Macron via the lower house of parliament without losing too many of their troops through defections to his camp.

raised the possibility that a Patriot missile battery could be deployed briefly to the Baltic region during NATO exercises in July that focus on air defense, known as Tobruk Legacy. The officials stressed that the Patriots, if deployed, would be withdrawn when the exercises were over. That would most likely happen before the Russian drills began, they said. Mattis declined to comment directly on the possible Patriot deployment to reporters after talks in Vilnius. “The specific systems that we bring are those that we determine necessary,” Mattis said, saying that NATO capabilities in the region were purely defensive. Baltic fears It was Mattis’s first trip to the Baltic states, which

fear Russia could attack them in the same way that it annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014. The states are concerned about their lack of air defenses and considering upgrading their military hardware. Asked about Baltic air defenses on a visit to the Pabrade training ground, Mattis told reporters: “We will talk to the leaders of each of the nations, and we will work this out in Brussels and we will work together if necessary. “The reason for the deployment you see right now is the lack of respect for international law by a nation in the region, and so long as the nation shows respect, we would not have to deploy that,” Mattis told reporters, standing in front of a German Leopard tank.

K A R A C H I , M AY 1 0 (IANS): Rampant cheating has been reported during the school leaving examinations in Pakistan’s Karachi city, the media reported. Students used mobile phones and “notes” to copy at several exam centres, Geo TV reported. “Despite a crackdown on WhatsApp groups where solved papers are circulating, they continue to be accessed in certain exam centres,” the report said. Desperate authorities imposed prohibitory orders to prevent groups from gathering at examination centres across Sindh province.

WA S H I N G T O N / DHARAMSHALA, MAY 10 (PTI): Top Democratic Party leader Nancy Pelosi, who met the Dalai Lama, has affirmed US’ commitment to the Tibetan people, their faith, culture and language. Pelosi along with a bipartisan delegation met the 81-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader yesterday in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. “Our delegation came in His Holiness’ spirit of faith and peace, and we’re pleased to once again affirm our commitment to the Tibetan people, to their faith, their culture and their language,” she said. In a separate statement, Pelosi reiterated

rights are protected. Cong ressman Jim McGovern, who also met the Dalai Lama, in a statement said, “It is long past time for the US to rethink our policy towards Tibet. For years, China has faced no consequences for its failure to respect the fundamental rights of the Tibetan people. This must change.” McGovern, who is a senior House Democrat, Co-Chair of Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, and a leading voice in America calling for new policies to strengthen human rights in Tibet, said he is especially worried about situation of the Tibetan people. “I am deeply troubled by the reports I receive from inside Tibet of human rights abuses and affronts to basic human dignity -- like the demolition of buildings and forced eviction of religious people from the famous Buddhist institute at Larung Gar, and the severe restrictions on the rights of Tibetans to freely meet, speak, write and worship as they choose,” McGovern said.

PARIS, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): France’s Socialist Party and the wider political Left splintered on Wednesday as centrist Emmanuel Macron’s presidential victory triggered power-struggles between moderates and hardliners ahead of June parliamentary elections. Benoit Hamon, the unsuccessful Socialist Party candidate in the presidential contest, said he would set up a new political movement after several of his hallmark proposals during that campaign were abandoned by his own party. Radical left-winger Jean-Luc Melenchon, also eliminated in the presidential contest, criticized his erstwhile allies in the Communist Party and vowed to campaign without them for seats in the 577-seat National Assembly. The two-stage legislative elections on June 11 and 18 will decide whether a new party created by 39year-old Macron, who is due formally to take power on Sunday, will win enough seats to allow him to govern effectively for the next five years. Macron’s year-old Republic on the Move party does not have any seats in the current parliament but it hopes in June to secure a majority that will allow

PABRADE TRAINING AREA (LITHUANIA), MAY 10 (Agencies): U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday that a Russian missile deployment near the Baltic states was “destabilizing”, and officials suggested the United States could deploy a Patriot missile battery in the region for NATO exercises in the summer. U.S. allies are jittery ahead of war games by Russia and Belarus in September that could involve up to 100,000 troops and include nuclear weapons training -- the biggest such exercise since 2013. The drills could see Russian troops near the borders of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Russia has also deployed Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, its enclave on the Baltic Sea. It said the deployment was part of routine drills, but U.S. officials worry that it may represent a permanent upgrade. Asked during a trip to Lithuania about the deployment, Mattis told a news conference: “Any kind of build-up like that is simply destabilizing.” The United States is ruling out any direct response to the Russian drills or the Iskander deployment. But at the same time, U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity,

2’ The Rock talks Trump and reveals ‘Deadpool reportedly what he’d do if he were President casting more

W

restler-turned-actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has shared his views on Trump and revealed what he’d do if he were President. Johnson was last year revealed to be the highestpaid actor in Hollywood and had previously tweeted that “maybe one day” he would run for office. Earlier this year, Johnson again

said that he would be open to a possible Presidential bid in the future. Speaking to GQ, Johnson has now said of Trump’s Presidency: “With any job you come into, you’ve got to prove yourself… It’s hard to categorize right now how I think he’s doing, other than to tell you how I would operate, what I would like to see.” “I’d like to see a better

leadership,” the star added. “I’d like to see a greater leadership. When there’s a disagreement, and you have a large group of people that you’re in a disagreement with – for example, the media – I feel like it informs me that I could be better. We all have issues, and we all gotta work our shit out. And I feel like one of the qualities of a great leader is not shutting people out. I miss that part. Even if we disagree, we’ve got to figure it out.” He went on: “Personally, I feel that if I were president, poise would be important. Leadership would be important. Taking responsibility for everybody. [If I didn’t agree with someone] on something, I wouldn’t shut them out. I would actually include them. The first thing we’d do is we’d come and sit down and we’d talk about it.”

X-Force characters

R

eports suggest that three more X-Force characters will appear in Deadpool 2. Preparations for the sequel to last year’s hugelysuccessful Marvel Comics adaptation are currently underway, with Ryan Reynolds set to return for his role as the titular anti-hero and Josh Brolin cast as Cable. Directed by David Leitch (John Wick) and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, Deadpool 2 has been given a release date of June 1, 2018. It has already been confirmed that X-Force character Domino will appear in Deadpool 2, with both Janelle Monae and Kerry Washington linked to the role. Now, according to Comic Book, three more X-

Force characters (Sunspot, Feral, and Shatterstar) are being cast for a post-credits scene that will precede a future X-Force standalone movie. X-Force is a Marvel superhero group and offshoot of the X-Men. Shot by Leitch, the teaser was released on Reynolds’ YouTube page. Entitled ‘No Good Deed’, the clip sees Deadpool – who, as Wade Wilson, is seen at the start of the short film listening to John Parr’s ‘St. Elmo Fire’ – responding to a street robbery in his usual, meta way. There’s also a cameo from former Marvel President Stan Lee. The trailer itself doesn’t give away many clues on when fans can expect the sequel, with the final message reading: ‘Deadpool… coming … not soon enough’.

Sharapova faces strong field if she accepts Aegon wildcard

Maria Sharapova L O N D O N, M AY 1 0 ( AG E N C I E S ) : M a r i a Sharapova will feature alongside eight of the world’s top 10 if she accepts a wildcard for next month’s Aegon Classic in Birmingham. Britain’s Johanna Konta will play, along with Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova and Angelique Kerber, who will return to world number one on Monday. BBC Sport understands Sharapova will be offered a wildcard for Birmingham.

The Russian, who returned from a 15-month doping ban last month, lost to Eugenie Bouchard in Madrid on Monday. Her involvement in Spain, courtesy of another wildcard, ended in the second round courtesy of a 7-5 2-6 6-4 defeat to the Canadian, who had been critical of the Russian, calling her a “cheat” and saying she should never have been allowed to play again. She also received a

wildcard for Stuttgart in April, where she reached the last four. The line-up for Birmingham is the strongest ever seen at the grass-court event. Of the current top 10, only Svetlana Kuznetsova and Serena Williams, who recently announced her pregnancy, are missing. The event runs from 17-25 June and is one of three tournaments - along with the Aegon Open in Nottingham and the Aegon International in Eastbourne - in the lead up to Wimbledon in July. Sharapova, who has not played a Wimbledon warm-up event since she reached the final in Birmingham in 2010, remains some way adrift of direct entry into the Wimbledon main draw. She will need to reach the semi-finals in Rome next week to make sure. A firstround defeat could cost her a place in qualifying unless the All England Club offers her a wildcard.

Aiming to make meaningful contribution in CT: Yuvraj Singh

DUBAI, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): Veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh is hopeful that he can make a “meaningful contribution” in India’s Champions Trophy title defence during the June 1-18 marquee event in England. “I am delighted to be returning to the India side for the 50-over ICC tournament and look forward to making a meaningful contribution as the side aims to defend its title,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying in an ICC statement. “Like any other ICC tournament, it will be a challenging event with each team arriving there believing it can lift the silverware on 18 June at The Oval.” Yuvraj, who will be playing in the ICC Champions Trophy after a hiatus of 11 years, however said it would be easier said than done against top cricketing nations of the world. Yuvraj made his debut in the 2000 event in Kenya and featured in all events until 2006, before missing the 2009 and 2013 editions of the tournament. India is clubbed with Pakistan, South Africa and

Sporting Lisbon beat India U-17 football team

OF OUR BELOVED LT. EZANIMI ODYUO

If there could be a ladder to heaven You will have visitors aplenty. If a million tears could bring you back You'd still be with us. A year already And it feels a lifetime. But cherishing the happy memories And hopeful re-union someday Drives us to live, every day. DC-1009

Lisbon, May 10 (IANS): The India U-17 football team suffered a 1-2 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the last match of their exposure trip to Europe. Tuesday night’s match, which was slated to be a 80minute affair, was part of the preparations of the Indian team as they gear up for the U-17 World Cup at home later this year. Carlos Silva (40th minute) put the hosts in the lead just before half-time. Aniket Jadhav (41st) quickly levelled the scores for the Indians after the resumption but Ussumane (51st) scored the second goal for Sporting Lisbon to settle the issue in the hosts’ favour. The match started at great pace and the Indian boys managed to contain the flurry of attacks by Sporting Lisbon, mostly from both flanks. After the half-hour mark, Abhijit Sarkar tried his luck from the top of the box but the Sporting defence couldn’t be unsettled by that. A minute before halftime, Sporting Lisbon found the back of the net from a corner. Indian goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill failed to collect the ball. Aniket equalised for the visitors almost immediately. After the equaliser, India pushed the hosts to the wall with a plethora of attacks. Anwar’s header went straight to the Sporting goalkeeper while Sanjeev’s long-ranger was blocked by the cautious Sporting defence. A few minutes later, Ussumane scored again for the hosts to put them back in the driver’s seat. Six minutes later, India were awarded a penalty but unfortunately, Aniket Jadhav squandered the opportunity to put India back on the same page once again.

Inter Milan sacks coach Pioli MILAN, MAY 10 (IANS): Inter Milan coach Stefano Pioli was fired three games before the end of the football season, the Serie A giants announced. Pioli took over from Dutchman Frank De Boer two months into the campaign but the club risks falling short of their goal of earning a place in next season’s European campaign, reports Xinhua news agency. “Inter Milan announced it has parted ways with head coach Stefano Pioli and his coaching staff. Inter thanks Stefano and his team for the dedication and hard work carried out at the club over the last six months in what has proven to be a difficult season,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday. They added that youth team coach Stefano Vecchi will take charge of the first team immediately and for the remaining three games of the season. A, 0-1 defeat to Genoa at the weekend left Inter in seventh place, three points behind sixth-placed city rivals AC Milan and a Europa League spot.

CL: Juventus stroll into final in style

Goals from Mario MandŞukić and Dani Alves fired the Italian team into the final. TURIN, MAY 10 (AGENCIES): Dani Alves proved his critics wrong as he inspired Juventus to a 2-1 win over Monaco to send the Italian club to its second Champions League final in three years. Often described as being past his best when he joined Juventus from Barcelona on a free transfer last June, the 34-year-old Alves was often mocked during the season.

But Alves had a manof-the-match performance against Monaco, setting up Mario Mandzukic’s opener in the 33rd minute before getting on the score sheet himself on the stroke of halftime with a sensational long-range volley as Juventus swept to a 4-1 victory on aggregate. “The most important thing is to help my team to win, whether scoring or providing assists, Alves

said. “I don’t score very often, so I’m happy, but in a way I prefer the assist to a goal, so everyone goes home happy. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid meet for the other second-leg match, with defending champion Real Madrid leading 3-0. But Alves, who spent eight years at Real’s fierce rival Barcelona, insists he has no preference who Juventus meets in the final.

FIFA to investigate Pogba’s record transfer M A NA M A , M AY 1 0 (AGENCIES): FIFA are to investigate the world-record transfer of Paul Pogba to Manchester United, a source at world football’s governing body said on Tuesday. Fr e nc h m id fie l d e r Pogba was transferred for more than £89.3 million ($111 million, 105.2 million euros) in August 2016 from Italian club Juventus. Confirmation of the investigation came after French media reports said FIFA had opened an inquiry. It is not yet clear what aspect of the transfer FIFA is investigating. Pogba, 24, started his career with the English club but made just three appearances in the Premier League

Paul Pogba before heading to Italy, after an apparent falling out with then manager Alex Ferguson. He flourished in Serie A, winning four league titles with Juventus between 2012 and 2016. Pogba also appeared in the 2015 Champions League final, which Juventus lost 3-1 to Barcelona. At the same time, the powerful midfielder made

himself a mainstay of the French national team. He made his debut in March 2013, just a week after his 20th birthday, in a World Cup qualifier against Georgia. He also featured as part of the 2014 French World Cup squad and was named the tournament’s best young player. Pogba’s performances at the 2016 European Championship helped attract the attention of his former club Manchester United, under new manager Jose Mourinho. After a protracted transfer saga, lasting several weeks, Pogba eventually signed for United last August and has so far appeared in almost 50 league and cup games this season.

Federation Cup: Mohun Bagan beat Shillong Lajong 3-2 C U T TAC K , M AY 1 0 (AGENCIES): Mohun Bagan beat Shillong Lajong by 3-2 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack in a Federation Cup 2017 match on Wednesday evening. Shillong Lajong took an early lead after Mohun Bagan defender Pritam Kotal scored an own goal in the 3rd minute. But the defending champions didn’t take much time to equalise as Daryl Duffy made a run on the left to beat Vishal Kaith in the 5th minute. In the 27th minute of the game, the referee awarded the Kolkata side a free kick just outside the box and Sony Norde made no mistake to send a powerful shot that found the back of the net. In the 35th minute, Shillong Lajong was given a free kick after a foul was committed on Redeem Tlang. Isaac, the free kick specialist, delivered a power-

“Playing a final is enough motivation for me, Alves said. “It doesn’t change anything for me if it is against Real Madrid, it would be a great match in world football. But Real still has a match to play. It won’t be Barcelona against Real Madrid, but Juventus against Real. There was one man who Alves didn’t need to prove anything, said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri. “Three months ago, some people wanted to strangle Dani Alves, Allegri said with a smile. “But when a player is good, he’s good in June, September and the following June... he hasn’t turned mediocre. “Anyways, Alves is not someone we’ve discovered in the past three months. He’s won 29 titles. Kylian Mbappe scored a consolation goal in the 69th minute for Monaco, as Juventus remained on course for the treble. Allegri’s side is likely to secure an unprecedented sixth Serie A title on Sunday at Roma, while it is also in the Italian Cup final. Two years ago, Juventus was in a similar position but it lost the final 3-1 to Barcelona. This time, it could be Juve’s year, espe-

cially after it eased past the Catalan team 3-0 on aggregate in the quarterfinals. Juventus will be attempting to end a 21-year wait for a European trophy. “It’s a path that started a long time ago, Allegri said. “Everyone has grown: the club, the players, myself. Have to compliment everyone. From tomorrow we have to think about what we can do in these in 20 days. “It’s right to be enthusiastic, but we’ll take it one step at a time. We have to improve certain things, because this squad is capable of improving. Monaco’s young team has earned a lot of admirers this season and coach Leonardo Jardim’s task will be to keep his players together, especially with many top clubs following Mbappe. The 18-year-old striker wasn’t even born when Buffon made his Serie A debut in 1995. “We leave here eliminated, but still with our heads held high, Mbappe said. “My goal against Buffon didn’t help anything, it’s pretty much just anecdotal. A s f o r M o n a c o ’s performances in this season’s Champions League, Mbappe saw them as valuable experience.

M U M B A I , M AY 1 0 (AGENCIES): The last time Vijender Singh fought, it took him less than 10 minutes to floor his opponent, Francis Cheka, and notch up his eighth win since turning professional. However, British professional boxer Amir Khan believes that the Indian star has not yet been tested in the ring. “At the moment, he’s probably not being tested. But when the big fights are going to come in, that’s when we will see the real Vijender. We’ll see what he’s capable of, Amir told Firstpost, in an interview on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the launch of the Super Boxing League, which he is promoting. “The main thing is, he has to beat whoever is being put in front of him. And he’s doing that, said Amir, who shoots his answers with as much clarity of thought as he throws his punches. Amir admits that he is impressed by the Indian, who won bronze at the Beijing Olympics. “Vijender is doing great things. I like the way he fights. He’s very skilful. He’s won a medal in the Olympics and the Com-

dying minutes of the bout, Harpreet applied ‘bagaldo’ technique to have the last laugh. Harpreet’s medal was the only silver lining on a day when not only the other Indian wrestlers returned empty handed but it was also a shabbily arranged event with a handful of crowd in attendance. The first day of the Asian Championship lacked the sheen as it commenced to an extremely poor response with no facilities for either the fans or the media. “There was a lot of pressure on me as I was the only medal hope left and I wanted to give the country a medal on the first day of the championship, being the hosts, said Harpreet, who had bagged a bronze at

NEW DELHI, MAY 10 (PTI): Harpreet Singh was the lone bright spot for India on the opening day of the Asian Wrestling Championship as he bagged a bronze medal in Greco- Roman 80kg category, even as other Indians failed to put an impressive show on Wednesday. Harpreet bagged his second successive bronze medal at the Asian Championship after defeating Junjie Na of China 3-2. After the first round, the scores were tied at 1-1 but the Indian came back strongly in the second round by taking down his opponent to earn two points to lead 3-1. Although the Chinese got one point due to the Indian’s passivity, in the

He seems like he wants to achieve big things in the professional circuit. He’s learning fast, Amir added. Just like Vijender, Amir too tasted glory in the Olympics for his country before he turned pro. Only in the Brit’s case, he was his nation’s youngest Olympic boxing medallist at 17, when he claimed a silver medal at Athens in 2004, who turned pro soon and then went on to become the youngest proboxing champion at 22. The switch was difficult, to say the least. “The Olympics was

the last edition in Bangkok, Thailand. “I focused very hard and strategised how I could win the bronze. I am glad I could apply the strategy well to win the medal in the end, he added. Another Indian in Gurpreet Singh (75kg) came close to finishing on the podium but lost his bronze medal bout 0-8 in just 38 seconds to Bin Yang of China. Gurpreet was no match to his opponent as the Chinese simply took down the Indian and turned him over again and again to finish off the bout in no time. Earlier in

an amazing experience. Probably one of my best experiences ever, because that is what made me who I am. The professional circuit is very tough. I was only 22 when I won my first world title. You fight strong men on the pro circuit, “As a professional fighter, you have to learn to pace yourself. You slow down a little bit. You work more on your power. The transition to the professional circuit requires to have more power and be more patient, he said. Over the last couple of years, there have been murmurs of a fight between him and Vijender, a fire first lit by the Indian when he said he would like to fight the Brit after a win.

the day, Harpreet reached the bronze medal round when his opponent, who had beaten him in the quarterfinal, entered the gold medal round, while Gurpreet had to win a repechage round to make the cut. Harpreet got off to a fine start, beating Yuya Maeta of Japan 2-1 in the qualification round, but went down to June- Hyoung Kim of Korea 0-8 in the quarters. But with the Korean making the gold medal round, Harpreet had a chance to climb up the podium.

ful shot from the left which was met by Fabio but Debjit Majumdar rose high to collect it easily and denied Lajong their second goal. Thangboi Singto’s side were working hard up front but as luck would have it, it was Bagan again who converted their chance to make it 3-1. Yusa Katsumi pounced on a shot by Sony Norde to tap in the ball inside the net in the 43rd minute. After the break, Shillong Lajong was given a free kick after the referee spotted the foul, Isaac stepped up but his shot was cleared by the Mohun Bagan defence in the 48th minute. Shillong Lajong saw many chances coming their way in the second session of the game and was finally paid off with their efforts when Yuta Kinowaki slotted the ball home from an Alen Deory assist in the 80th minute to make it 3-2 for the Reds.
