NPF says it will remain as part of UDA

KO H I M A , A P R 3 0 (NPN): Attempting to maintain undeterred by the sudden move of 21 NPF legislators who joined the ruling NDPP, veteran regionalists and NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu said he was not surprised by the move, but at the same time maintained that the party stood firm on its foundation and would revamp and reactivate all activities ahead of the 2023 assembly polls.

Addressing mediapersons at his residence here Saturday, in the presence of four NPF legislators along with other senior NPF functionaries, Dr. Shürhozelie said the move was a pure case of defection and not merger as the MLAs left the party on their own.

He lauded the four MLAs-- Kuzholuzo (Azo) Neinu, Dr. Ngangshi K Ao, Khriehu Liezietsu and Kezhienyi Khalo for choosing to remain loyal to the party and described them as the four “heroes”.

NEW DELHI, APR 30 (PTI): Gen Manoj Pande took charge as the 29th Chief of the Army Staff on Saturday after incumbent Gen MM Naravane retired from service.

Gen Pande, who was serving as the vice chief, became the first officer from the Corps of Engineers to helm the force. He also headed the Eastern Army Command, tasked with guarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh sectors.

Gen Pande took charge of the Army at a time India is facing myriad security challenges, including along the borders with China and Pakistan. As the Army chief, he will also have to coordinate with the Navy and the Indian Air Force on the government's plan to roll out theatre commands.

Rebutting the point that the 21 NPF legislators had joined NDPP to strengthen the hands of the chief minister for the Naga political issue, Dr. Shürhozelie said it did not make any sense as the UDA opposition-less government was formed (in 2021) for the very purpose to facilitate the Naga issue.

He said since NPF continues to exist and there-

fore as part of the UDA government, the earlier arrangement of allotting one ministerial berth and chairmanship of UDA should be followed.

Dr. Liezietsu said the NPF will take up the matter with the chief minister.

It may be mentioned that after the formation of the all-party government (UDA), NPF legislature party leader T.R. Zeliang was made the UDA chairman and NFP legislator YM Yollow was inducted to the cabinet.

Kuzholuzo Azo Neinu also supplemented the point that since 21 NPF members have joined the NDDP, the two posts held

by NPF legislators should be reverted.

Dr. Shürhozelie further said the same principle should also apply in restoring membership of NPF in the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue which had six NPF legislators. He said the current four present NPF legislators should replace the other six who joined NDPP in the Core Committee.

Azo reaffirmed that the NPF legislators will be part of the UDA government, as they had joined the opposition-less government for Naga political issue, and that as long as the issue remained, NPF will be part of UDA. Dr. Liezietsu also termed the reason of 21 NPF MLAs joining NDPP for Naga issue was meaningless since all the legislators were part of the UDA government for that very purpose.

When asked whether the party would accept the 21 MLAs if they wished to return, he said the party

would examine every individual concern.

NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon also supplemented Dr. Shürhozelie by saying that the 21 NPF legislators who joined NDPP was not merger but a clear case of defection, since it was done without the consent of the party and the party did not endorse it.

When asked whether such move indicated the downfall of NPF, Kikon said the party had faced the worst of times, referring to the 2017 episode when most of the MLAs left the party except few, but managed to continue.

Replying to a query on whether the party was contemplating to seek legal recourse, Kikon said NPF will take its own course of action without explaining explicitly the nature of action..

PM bats for local languages in courts; CJI reminds judges of ‘Lakshman Rekha’ NEW DELHI, APR 30 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a strong pitch for use of local languages in courts to make the common man feel connected to the justice system.

In remarks that came before Modi's call at a conference, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana also said the time has come for the legal system to introduce local languages in courts.

CJI later told a press meet reforms such as introduction of local languages in courts cannot happen in a day, and these things take time due to logistical difficulties or other hurdles. The remarks

by Modi and CJI against the backdrop of a debate over using regional language in judicial proceedings came in their speeches at the inaugural session of the joint conference of chief ministers and chief justices of high courts.

The event held after a gap of six years also saw the CJI asserting one should be mindful of 'Lakshman Rekha' while discharging duty, noting the Constitution provides separation of power among the three organs of the state.

Modi appealed to chief ministers and chief justices of high courts to give priority to cases related to undertrial prisoners languishing in jails and release them, as per law, based on human sensitivities, adding judicial reform is not merely a policy matter.

peal outdated laws to make delivery of justice easier. In his address, CJI minced no words while terming governments as the "biggest litigants", accounting for nearly 50% of pending cases. He said the "docket explosion" is due to non-performance of various wings of the executive and the legislature not realising its full potential.

Modi said he had constituted a group to examine the possibility whether laws can be drafted in legal language as well as in terms easily understood by the common man.

1st dose as booster to those vaxed with Sputnik V

NEW DELHI, APR 30 (PTI): The first dose of Sputnik V vaccine can be administered as a precaution dose to all those vaccinated with the Russian Covid-19 jab, an NTAGI panel has recommended, official sources told PTI on Saturday.

have separate compositions. Currently, there is no policy decision on providing a precaution dose to those inoculated with the Russian vaccine.

NTC urges PM to expedite Naga solution DIMAPUR, APR 30 (NPN): Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has urged the Prime Minister to expedite the resolution of the Naga peace process, saying Nagas were “impatient now on the nonresolution and the extensive policy of negotiations for a solution to the Naga political issue.”

In a representation addressed to the Prime Minister, the NTC president Toniho Yepthomi and general secretary Nribemo Ngullie said that two and a half years have passed since the dialogue between the government of India and the Naga political groups “officially culminated on ‘31st October 2019.”

NTC maintained that the dialogue had been worked out

on the basis of the principles of “3rd August Framework Agreement 2015” and the “17th November 2017 Agreed Position” with status papers, which was dear to the Nagas of Nagaland in particular and the Nagas in general, but yet to see the light of the day.

It said that Nagas cannot continue to remain with anxiety and an uncertain future any longer.

Further, NTC said that several representations have been submitted, but to no avail till date.

The council also said that political parties in Nagaland were united and have formed oppositionless government under the banner of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to facilitate peaceful

political settlement in the region.

NTC said the parliamentary core committee has also resolved that the elected members were prepared to pave way as and when an inclusive, honourable and acceptable solution arrived at.

In the light of the above, NTC has urged the Prime Minister to “take an altar call” for inking the agreement of the “much expected solution” to the protracted Naga political issue within the parameters of the culminated dialogue of “31st October 2019” based on “Framework Agreement” and the “Agreed Position” as the benchmark dialogue, which was inclusive, honourable, and acceptable, without any further delay.

Scholarship: ANCSU serves ultimatum on govt

DIMAPUR, APR 30 (NPN): Dismayed over the delay in the disbursement of scholarship 2022, the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has served an ultimatum on the state government to disburse scholarship for the year 2022 within 10 days, failing which the union would “resort to any befitting democratic protest of the day.” In a representation addressed to the director higher education, ANCSU president Toito D Chishi and general

secretary Tenyesinlo Bukh expressed discontent with the department for not heeding to the “genuine appeal”. ANCSU also expressed displeasure over the state government’s failure to address the needs of the student community.

The union said it understands the requisite procedure to issue drawal authority.

However, ANCSU reiterated that it cannot remain mute observers when the students’ interests were “deliberately disregarded.”

GANGTOK, APR 30 (AGENCIES): North East has a massive potential to become the trade link between India and South East Asia in years to come, said Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri here on Saturday.

Speaking at a symposium on ‘Urban Development in North Eastern States: Smart City Revolutions’ in the city, Puri reiterated the Modi government’s commitment to connecting the region through infrastructure and technology.

growth that can fuel India’s push towards an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. He said a total of 523 projects worth Rs 13563 crores were in various stages of development in 10 cities of the North East and

121 projects worth Rs 1,553 crores had been completed with another 268 projects worth Rs. 8,507 crores under implementation. Puri also expressed his happiness to announce that the consensus to amend the funding pattern to 90:10, will ensure completion of many a project.

‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to be celebrated at Agri Expo

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, APR 30 (NPN): Nagaland is all set to celebrate “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” at Agri Expo, at Chümoukedima on May 2.

The programme, which would commemorate the 75th year of India’s independence is being organised by state Agri and Allied departments under the aegis of the ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and North East Council (NEC).

Informing this to the media at a press confer-

ence held in the Nagaland State Agriculture Marketing Board (NSAMB) conference hall, Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC), Y. Kikheto Sema said the same would be celebrated throughout the North East states from a date between April 28-May 4 with different themes.

He informed that Nagaland would be celebrating the event on the theme, “Monetizing Agri-Horti and Organic Potentials of NE through Value Chain Development”.

He informed that the celebration in the state

would witness inauguration of Community Market Complex (CMC) at NE Agri Expo, by chief minister, Neiphiu Rio while minister of state for DoNER & Cooperation, B.L Verma would be inaugurating the Naturally Nagaland Exhibition stalls, a brand consisting of all organic natural products produced in Nagaland.

He said the CMC with a housing capacity of 66 stalls and a café was expected to create employment opportunities for around 150 young entrepreneurs to sell organic products

Kohima Science College Jotsoma organises 59th parting social

DIMAPUR: Kohima Science College (KSC) Jotsoma organised its 59th parting social in the college auditorium on Saturday, with advisor to state chief minister and associate vice president, Athletics Federation of India, Abu Metha as guest speaker.

According to a DIPR report, while addressing the students, Metha pointed out that the college was more

than six decades old.

Terming it as “an iconic institution”, he said that students molded and groomed from the college had gone on to become some of the nation builders of the state and country and that the present students had high ideals and examples to live up to.

With around 600 students graduating this year from the college, he encour-

aged the students by saying that if each of them could change 10 lives and those 10 lives changed another 10 lives, in about five generations time, they would have changed the lives of about 60 million people, equivalent to the present population of France.

With India, China and Asia being the world’s biggest economy with the highest purchasing power and with the state geographically located in the middle, Metha said that it could be one of the greatest strengths for the state.

Though they may be faced with challenges and difficulties, he encouraged them to cling on to hope and keep moving forward, which he said could ensure that the future generation would live in a world that was much better than the one today.

During the programme, the college also felicitated students who excelled in various competitions and extra-curricular activities held at state and national levels.

When asked on export of products from the state, CEO, NSAMB, G Ikuto Zhimomi informed that all the products were conditioned to be tested by the agencies.

Meanwhile, on being questioned why local markets were not captured and the organic products exported, Zhimomi replied that only surplus products were exported such as ginger, orange, kiwi, etc.

He added that products of lower quantities were primarily focused to be sold in the local market.

The NSAMB CEO also informed that the AC market since its inauguration on December 8, 2020 procured around 305 Metric Tonnes (MT) of organic vegetables and fruits from the state farmers, which have been exported.

Awareness prog on adolescent nutrition & health DIMAPUR: An awareness campaign on the topic, “adolescent nutrition and health” was conducted by Adolescent Friendly Health Clinic (AFHC) District Hospital, Mon on April 30 at Little Flower School Mon. National Health Mission (NHM) Mon informed that counsellor, Kenyuhyule Thong (clinical psychologist) spoke on the issue of body shaming among teenagers in the age of social media.

Thong said body shaming not only lowered a person’s self-esteem but also led to eating disorders accompanied by stress, depression and anxiety.

On how being body shamed could be harmful to young adults, Thong said in extreme cases, teenagers could end up suffering from eating disorders.

“Some teenagers will avoid eating for long periods of time and when they can’t take it anymore, they will start to binge eat. Others can end up developing a harsh case of bulimia,” Thong informed. She further encouraged the youth to focus on caring for themselves.

DIMAPUR, APR 30 (NPN): The department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) observed World Veterinary Day 2022, in Dimapur and Kohima districts on Saturday, on the theme, “Strengthening veterinary resilience”.

The day which was launched officially by the World Veterinary Association in 2000 highlights and illustrates the duties and responsibilities that veterinarians play at local, national and international levels.

In a short speech, deputy CVO Dimapur, Dr Imomanen Tzüdir elaborated on “One Health project”, a collaborative, multi-sectoral and transdisciplinary approach working at local, regional, national and global levels with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes. He said that organic products would not be possible without animals because since they would provide manure to promote organic farming. In this regard, he said immunization programme should be carried out and keep animals disease free.

Focusing on the theme, a speech on behalf of NVA was delivered by NVA president and VS VHD Dimapur Dr K N Zübemo Humtsoe.

He spoke on the resilience in veterinary profession and predictive role of mindfulness and selfcompassion.

Humtsoe also highlighted the factors associated with resilience.

The programme was chaired by VAS Dr Langnyei Phom and vote of thanks was proposed by VAS Dr Vikshe Sumi.

The veterinary surgeon cited examples of resilient persons as those doctors and para-vets who worked selflessly and tirelessly during the pandemic to alleviate the pain and sufferings of animal livestock and pets.

The programme was chaired by deputy director, Dr Ketholenuo Metha while DDDO, Dr Akangnungla proposed the vote of thanks.

Metsubo launches SVE programme in Mkg Correspondent MOKOKCHUNG, APR 30 (NPN): Minister for Rural Development (RD), Metsubo Jamir on Saturday launched the “Startup Village Entrepreneurship program (SVEP)” for Ongpangkong North & Kobulong Block” under DAY-Nagaland Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) at the Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School auditorium.

Speaking at the programme as special guest, Metsubo said the SVEP was aimed at uplifting the livelihood of rural communities of India, especially the capable unemployed youth, through skill and capacity building in the Agri & allied sector.

Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t white collared job was saturated, the minister said it was important for the youth and the womenfolk to focus on self-sustaining activities.

He urged upon the beneficiaries to perform with dedication and produce what the market demanded.

Delivering the keynote address, joint secretary & mission director, Sentimenla said that it was an important occasion for NSRLM since this, she said, was the beginning of a new venture in implementation of the SVEP Phase-II. Sentimenla said the objectives of SVEP was to enable the rural communities to set up their enterprises by developing

a sustainable model for village entrepreneurship promotion through integrated ICT techniques and tools for training and capacity building, enterprise advisory services and to provide loans from banks/ SHGs & federations.

She also informed that the programme aims to develop local resources by training a pool of village level community cadre (CRPEP) and build the capacity of NRLM and SHG federations to monitor and direct the work of the CRPEPs, help rural entrepreneurs to access finance for starting their

enterprises from NRLM SHGs and federations, Community Enterprise Fund (CEF) and banks.

Police officers trained on combatting cyber crime

DIMAPUR: In commemoration of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” and as part of “Annadata Devo Bhava” campaign, District Horticulture Office (DHO) Dimapur organised a workshop on April 29 in Dimapur.

A press release by the department stated that the district level workshop under coconut development board was funded by Coconut Development Board.

At the technical session, resource person, assistant professor Dr. Rokolhuu Keditsu from SASARD, spoke on the topic, “modern cultivation practices of coconut cultivation” and also gave a demonstration on coconut cultivation.

IC celebrates literary & cultural day DIMAPUR: Immanuel College (IC) celebrated convergence - literary and cultural day under the theme, ‘’awakening the art in you’’ on April 29-30 at the College Campus.

In a press release, IC stated that the impetus of convergence was designed to bring out creativity and potentialities of the students and to imbibe the rich cultural heritage.

On the first day, various literary activities like essay writing, painting, cosplay, solo, choir, poetry slam, impersonation and fitness took place.

by NIELIT Kohima, followed by topics on Digital Forensic and Mobile Forensic, Cyber Security Policy by the resource persons.

Altogether, 54 senior police officers of Nagaland police attended the workshop.

KO H I M A , A P R 3 0 (NPN): Konyak Nyupu Sheko Khong (KNSK) Kohima celebrated its silver jubilee on the theme “Empowered Women empower women”, in the conference hall of AMK Kohima with advisor for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Dr. Neikiesalie Nicky Kire as special guest and associate professor, Rev. Dr. Ellen Konyak Jamir as theme speaker here, on Saturday.

In his address, Dr. Nicky congratulated KNSK Kohima for achieving a milestone and maintained that the Konyak women were shining among the Konyak society.

Congratulating the Konyak womenfolk on having one of its members elected as MP Rajya Sabha, Dr. Nicky said things were slowly moving towards a good change and viewed that this was possible because of unity.

He said every tribe should practise the good examples set by another tribe.

Liver, kidney diseases rising at alarming rate: Surgeons Staff Reporters DIMAPUR, APR 30 (NPN): With an objective to sensitise the public in Nagaland on chronic liver and kidney diseases, surgeons from the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi held a press conference on “Healthy Nagaland” at Hotel Acacia, here, on Saturday.

Addressing the media, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital New Delhi, department of Nephrology, Institute of Renal Sciences director dialysis unit, vice chairperson, Dr Manish Malik and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital New Delhi Oncosurgery department of Surgical Gastroenterology & Liver Transplantation, HPB & GI senior consultant surgeon, Dr Ushast Dhir said “many young people in Nagaland with advanced liver diseases, Hepatitis C, alcoholic liver disease and fatty liver disease require transplantation in order to lead healthy lives”.

The surgeons disclosed that they noticed a vacuum in many areas of the North East region.

Informing that chronic diseases of liver and kidney were increasing at an alarming rate, they expressed hope that leading experts of kidney and liver would come together to fulfil needs of medical treatment in Nagaland.

The surgeons said the initiative in Dimapur was made possible through NDPP women wing president Vikali Zhimomi.

They informed that a free camp was held at Faith hospital where seven to eight patients were undergoing dialysis with some patients aged as young as 20 years old.

On affiliation with hospitals and doctors in Nagaland, the surgeons said affiliations would “definitely help bridge the gap for faster treatment, easier access to expert advice (tele-medicine), saving money and time”.

Speaking as the special guest at the inaugural programme, Naga Hoho (all Naga inhabited areas), general secretary, Elu Ndang stressed on the importance of getting back into “our” roots through preservation and digitisation of oral traditions into books for wider and easier accessibility.

ENPO mourns ENWO VP’s demise DIMAPUR: Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden demise of its leader, Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation (ENWO) vice president, Cham, who passed away at Civil Hospital Dimapur on April 26.

In a condolence message, ENPO said words were not enough to describe what “an immeasurable loss” it was for the people of Khiamniungan in particular and Eastern Nagaland as a whole.

ENPO said the people of Eastern Nagaland would fondly remember her selfless service for the love and future of the people of Eastern Nagaland.

Behind the facade

ince the past nearly twenty years, regional political parties have exploited and thrived using the call for unity and it had led to forming the first opposition-less government in 2015 and followed the second time in 2021. Call for unity sounds good and a much-hyped lexicon in Naga politics but the eventual political separations only confirm that the word is as good only as it sounds.

The political parties have been pulling the wool over the eyes of the people by using the Naga political issue to not do what they have been elected to do.

This has led to an unnatural happening where the state is unblessed with an ‘all party government’ and the highest public forum a house without an opposition. Forming an opposition-less government is a betrayal of people’s mandate even if the mandate may have been purchased with money obtained through dubious means. Such an unnatural phenomenon cannot be valued as unity. Rather in situations both ruling and opposition can come to an agreement over a situation but not eliminating the crucial role of a parliamentary watchdog. It is now yearly three years since the conclusion of all talks

by October 31,2019 but still there appears no hard evidence of early solution. The role of legislators as self-acclaimed ‘facilitators’ for Naga political solution is supplementary and have gone through the motions in holding consultations with various apex tribe organisations and NGOs. There has been many consultative meetings over the years since 2012 with various tribe hohos, NGOs and civil society organisations. Holding consultations is a ritual and as with such exercises, too many of them only creates an illusion that merely holding of such consultations is the answer. Rather, it is an abdication of moral and constitutional responsibility of an elected government. Discussions of various issues vests with the elected who have been mandated by their electors. Instead of doing the job, no matter how difficult it may be, merely throwing the ball to the courts of various NGOs is a populist escape route. Consultative meetings are an exception and not a rule. Today, it is not the voice of the enlightened and wise or those who love the people that plods society but the voice of those who refuse to see anything but through the prism of tribe and politics. Even as emotive social and political issues create a cacophony of noises that drown the sane and rational voices, it is left to the people to ask themselves as to how long are they willing to elect a government that shies away from decision making? Even with regard to free, frank and fearless dissemination, society has remain muted and this is reflective of the lack of true democracy in society because people do not want to talk openly for fear of their own Frankensteins. The reality is that society in Nagaland has unwittingly allowed itself to be so continuously programmed to accept threats and ultimatums as acceptable and even righteous way to get what is want under whatever umbrella. It’s a topsy-turvey situation going around in Nagaland -socially, spiritually, politically and economically.

The prevailing environment for some years has troubled many thinkers and concerned citizens who feel that the state has taken a wrong turn in its quest to for the ‘easy road’, which has proved to be the syndrome which has placed society under a nearanarchic environment.

GUWAHATI, APRIL 30 (IANS): Gujarat’s Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani, who was granted bail by the District Sessions court in Assam’s Barpeta on Friday, said on Saturday that he was arrested by the Assam police “following instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)”.

Mevani, while addressing a grand reception accorded by the Assam Congress in Guwahati, said that after PMO’s instructions, Assam Police went to Gujarat to arrest him following his appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urge people to maintain peace and harmony after the communal violence in Gujarat.

The 41-year-old legislator, who was elected from the Vadgam Assembly constituency, was arrested by

the Assam police on April 20 (from Gujarat) and taken to Kokrajhar district the next day.

The Barpeta police arrested him again on April 25 soon after the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Kokrajhar district granted his bail.

Mevani was sent to five-day police custody by Barpeta’s chief judicial magistrate on April 26 on charges of “voluntarily causing hurt”, “criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty” and “force on a woman cop intending to outrage her modesty”.

Meanwhile, the Congress organised a series of demonstrations across Assam since last week against the “undemocratic arrest” of Mevani, who had earlier pledged outside support to the party.

The Gujarat legislator was arrested in his home state on April 20 following a complaint filed against him by an Assam BJP leader seeking action against Mevani under the IT Act.

“In Guwahati, a procession was held in Fancy Bazaar area and the supporters marched for about half a kilometre before being stopped by security personnel,” he said. “Protest marches were also taken out in most of the districts, including at Hailakandi, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Charaideo, Nagaon, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar,” he added.

Rahman said prices of essential commodities have become unbearable. “When UPA was in power, the BJP used to protest against price rise. People thought that once they come to power, price rise will stop. But, it is the opposite,” he claimed.

“The ambulance service will pave the way for the speedy treatment of seriously ill and injured cows. I am happy that the ‘gaushala’ is improving the standard of treatment of injured and sick cows,” Pegu said.

Gopal Gaushala president Nirmal Beria claimed it was the first cow ambulance service in the entire Northeast.

“We faced a lot of trouble in bringing the sick cows to the shelter, so this ambulance service was started,” he said.

“On several occasions, we could not save sick cows but now we hope that the ambulance service will help,” he added.

The ambulance was brought in from Ahmedabad and is fitted with a hydraulic lift.

Correspondent IMPHAL, APR 30: Tension ran high in Maram area of Manipur’s Senapati district after several people were injured in clashes following gun firing on Friday night.

Of over a dozen people, including a police officer, were injured. Three of them who sustained critical bullet injuries were admitted at a hospital in Imphal.

Reports said that the clash broke out when some armed persons physically assaulted three youths at Maram Bazar around 7.30 pm on Friday. Several vehicles were also damaged, following which the police resorted to firing several rounds of tear gas shells to take control of the situation.

Maram Bazar Village Authority, in a release, alleged that the clash broke out after local youths intervened to stop fighting among K Hepuni son of sitting MLA N Kaisyi of Tadubi AC and his accomplices at Maram Bazar around 7.30 pm.

It alleged that Hepuni and his heavily drunk associates fought among themselves after partying

at Naojai in the heart of Maram Bazar.

When local youths tried to stop the fight and requested them to park their vehicles at proper place to avoid causing inconvenience to vehicular movements along the NH-2, K Hepuni and his associates numbering around 30 brutally assaulted three local youths.

While the police personnel from Tadubi police station were trying to control the situation, escort personnel of MLA N Kaisyi appeared suddenly out of nowhere at the spot, aggravating the situation, the release alleged.

Even after the reinforcement police personnel led by Senapati district SP Karthik reached the spot at around 11.45 pm, gun firing unleashed by Hepuni and party continued, not deterred even by the presence of the reinforcement team.

This prompted the reinforcement team to resort to tear gas towards the Golai/ Makhan side, where Hepuni and his party with weapons in their hands were taking position.

Dr Sanjeeb Kalita, the scientist of the centre under the Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science and Technology (APSCS&T) carried out fundamental research and development for both the inventions at Guwahati-based Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology, official sources said on Friday.

Both the inventions will be having a far-reaching impact on the management of painful diabetic neuropathy and broadspectrum uses as advanced bandage materials respectively, the sources said.

NEW DELHI, APR 30 (PTI): Northwest and central India experienced their hottest April in 122 years with average maximum temperatures reaching 35.9 and 37.78 degrees Celsius respectively, the weather office said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said northwest and west central parts of the country - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana - will continue to experience above normal temperatures in May as well.

Nights would be warmer in May in most parts of the country, except some regions of south peninsular India, Mohapatra said.

The average temperatures observed pan-India for April was 35.05 degrees, which was the fourth highest in 122 years, he said. “The average rainfall in May 2022 over the country is most likely to be above normal,” Mohapatra said.

However, par ts of northwest and northeast India as well as the extreme southeast Peninsula are expected to get below normal rainfall in May, he said.

The high temperatures in March and April were attributed to “continuously scanty rainfall activity”, he said.

The AAP government in the state transferred the inspector general of police (IG) Patiala Range, the Patiala senior superintendent of police and the Patiala superintendent of police with immediate effect. A spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said Mukhwinder Singh Chinna has been appointed as the new IG-Patiala while Deepak Parik will be the new Patiala SSP. Wazir Singh has been appointed as the new superintendent of police of Patiala.

ED seizes Rs 5,551 cr deposits of Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi NEW DELHI, APR 30 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate Saturday “seized” over Rs 5,551-crore worth fund of Chinese mobile manufacturing company Xiaomi for violating the Indian foreign exchange law, officials said.

In a press release after the ED’s statement, Xiaomi Technology India Private Limited said its operations in the country are “firmly compliant with local laws and regulations”.

The company (also called Xiaomi India) is a trader and distributor of mobile phones in the country under the brand name MI. “Xiaomi India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the China-based Xiaomi group. This amount of Rs 5,551.27 crore lying in the bank accounts of the company has been seized by the Enforcement Directorate,” the agency said in a statement. The seizure has been done under sections of the

“We have studied the order from government authorities carefully. We believe our royalty payments and statements to the bank are all legit and truthful. These royalty payments that Xiaomi India made were for the in-licensed technologies and IPs used in our Indian version products,” the

spokesperson said.

“It is a legitimate commercial arrangement for Xiaomi India to make such royalty payments. However, we are committed to working closely with government authorities to clarify any misunderstandings,” the spokesperson added.

The ED alleged such huge amounts in the name of royalties were remitted on the instructions of their Chinese “parent group” entities, it alleged.

“The amount remitted to two other US-based unrelated entities were also for the ultimate benefit of the Xiaomi group entities,” the ED said.

It said while Xiaomi India procures completely manufactured mobile sets and other products from the manufacturers in India it has not availed any service from these three foreign-based entities to whom such amounts have been transferred.

7 Delhi records 1,607 new Covid cases, 2 deaths NEW DELHI, APR 30 (IANS): Delhi recorded 1,607 new Covid-19 cases and two deaths amid an ongoing spike in the number of single-day infections, according to a health authorities on Saturday.

The new cases which were registered in Friday’s heath bulletin was issued by the authorities on Saturday morning.

The overall caseload of the national capital has now increased to 18,81,555.

In the same period, two Covid fatalities were also reported, taking the total death toll to 26,174.

The Covid fatality rate in capital city stands at 1.39 per cent, as per the bulletin.

The number of active cases has also surged to 5,609 and the positivity has reached 5.28 per cent.

With 1,246 patients recovering in the last 24 hours, the total number has increased to 18,49,772.

The number of Covid patients being treated in home isolation has also risen to 3,863.

NEW DELHI, APR 30 (PTI): Assets worth Rs 7.27 crore of Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez have been attached under the anti-money laundering law in connection with a criminal probe against alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar and others, the Enforcement Directorate said on Saturday.

The federal agency has issued a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for attaching fixed deposits worth Rs 7.12 crore and Rs 15 lakh cash of the 36-year-old actor as it called these funds as “proceeds of crime”.

“Sukesh Chandrashekhar had given various gifts worth Rs 5.71 crore to Jacqueline Fernandez from the proceeds of crime generated by criminal activities including extortion.” “Chandrashekhar had put Pinky Irani, his long time associate and co-accused in this case to deliver the said gifts to her,” the ED said in a statement.

The United Nations continued trying to broker an evacuation of civilians from the increasingly hellish ruins of Mariupol, a southern port city that Russia has sought to capture since it invaded Ukraine more than nine weeks ago. Citizens are “begging to get saved” from a steel plant that has become Mariupol’s last defense stronghold, Mayor Vadym Boichenko said Friday. “There, it’s not a matter of days. It’s a matter of hours.” An estimated 2,000 fighters were holed up in the plant with about 1,000 civilians.

Two Ukrainian women whose husbands are members of the Azov Regiment of Ukraine’s National Guard said they feared soldiers will be tortured and killed if left behind and captured by the Russians.

They asked for a Dunkirk-style mission to evacuate the fighters, a reference to the World War II operation launched to rescue surrounded Allied troops in northern France. “We can do this extraction operation ... which will save our soldiers, our civilians, our kids,” Kateryna Prokopenko, 27, told The Associated Press.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif’s son takes oath as Punjab CM

LAHORE, APR 30 (PTI): Amidst last minute drama, Hamza Shehbaz, son of Pakistan’s new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on Saturday took the oath of chief minister of Punjab, the country’s most populous province with 110 million people.

National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf administered the oath of office to 47-year-old Hamza at the Governor House here.

Earlier in the morning, Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema rejected the resignation of outgoing chief minister Usman Buzdar and restored his Cabinet. He also declared Hamza’s election as constitutionally invalid.

Governor Cheema also lodged a strong protest over Punjab police taking over the charge of the Governor House from its security personnel to ensure a smooth oath taking ceremony of Hamza.

As the ceremony was underway, Cheema urged the chief justice to take notice of the police occupying the Governor House.

“The drama of a fake chief minister’s oath has been performed in an unconstitutional manner and the chief justice should take note of this,” he said, adding that he would also write to President Arif Alvi on this issue.

Soon after the oath taking ceremony, Punjab chief secretary notified that Hamza has assumed the charge of the chief minister’s office.

On Friday, the Lahore High Court asked the National Assembly Speaker to administer the oath of Hamza. Earlier, the court had ordered Governor Cheema to administer the

oath but he refused, citing Hamza’s election as unconstitutional.

Hamza was elected the Chief Minister of Punjab on April 16 during an assembly session marred by violence in which Speaker Parvez Elahi and Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Asia Amjad suffered injuries.

The PTI-led coalition had boycotted the election after its 26 lawmakers defected to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and voted for Hamza.

Maharashtra win women’s T20 Cricket Championship for Deaf MUMBAI, APR 30 (IANS): Maharashtra team defeated Uttar Pradesh by 10 wickets to emerge victorious at the third T20 Women’s National Cricket Championship for Deaf 2022 at Islam Gymkhana at Marine Lines in Mumbai on Friday.

The perennial event was organised by Indian Deaf Cricket Association and hosted by Yuva Cricket Society of the Deaf in Mumbai from April 26 to 29, 2022.

In the first semifinal, electing to bat first, Uttar Pradesh made 140 for no loss in 10 overs against Karnataka, with Pratima Mishra unbeaten at 81 off 37 while Shavi Mishra was the perfect second fiddle to her, remaining unconquered at 47 off 25 balls. In reply, Karnataka made 104/3 in their 10 overs as Uttar Pradesh won by 36 runs.

20 minutes to reach the Madrid Open Round of 16 for the first time since 2016.

NEWCASTLE, APR 30 (REUTERS): A first-half strike from midfielder Naby Keita helped Liverpool secure a hard-earned 1-0 win at Newcastle United on Saturday as Juergen Klopp’s side kept their Premier League title hopes alive and went top of the table- for a few hours at least.

The victory put Liverpool two points ahead of champions Manchester City, who can regain first spot with a win at Leeds United later on Saturday.

Newcastle are ninth on 43 points.

“It’s the most difficult of circumstances. A team in form, a crowd waiting for ages for proper success,” said Klopp. “Our people were outstanding and Newcastle are obviously a really passionate crowd.

IPL: MI beat Royals by five wickets to open account

MUMBAI, APR 30 (PTI): Mumbai Indians finally opened their account in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League with a five-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals here on Saturday.

Opting to field, MI restricted RR to 158 for six, despite a fine 52-ball 67 by Jos Buttler at the top.

The second highest scorer for RR was Ravichandran Ashwin (21 off 9 balls) who played a cameo to take RR past 150-run mark.

In reply, MI chased down the target in 19.2 overs with Suryakumar Yadav (51 off 39 balls) emerging as the top scorer.

Yadav in company of Tilak Varma (35) added 81 to keep MI in the hunt, before Tim David (20) finished the job.

After failing multiple times, Virat Kohli finally came out of a prolonged slump in form by registering his first IPL fifty in 14 matches, including nine this season, as Royal Challengers Bangalore posted a challenging 170 for six.

BCCI reschedules Ranji Trophy final to June 22 Jadeja hands over CSK captaincy back to Dhoni NEW DELHI, APR 30 (AGENCIES): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to reschedule the knockout stage of the Ranji Trophy by a couple of days. Earlier, the quarterfinal stage was to begin on June 4, but according to a revised itinerary sent to the state units late on Friday, the Board has stated that the quarterfinals will now be played from June 6 to 10, followed by the semifinals between June 14 and 18.

The final will be played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium from June 22 to 26 and will be telecast live. Sportstar understands that the decision to push back the leg by a

couple of days was taken keeping the logistics in mind in a bid to host the final at Chinnaswamy Stadium with full-fledged broadcast facilities.

M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is scheduled to host India’s T20I against South Africa on June 19, and with the Ranji Trophy final earlier scheduled for June 20, it would have been difficult for putting up a new live broadcast unit. So, keeping that in mind, the board decided to reschedule the summit clash by a couple of days.

According to the revised schedule, the first quarterfinal between Bengal and Jharkhand will be held at the Just Cricket Academy

and will be live streamed digitally, while there will be no live coverage for the game between Mumbai and Uttarakhand, to be played at Ground 2 in Alur. The third game between Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh will have live broadcast, even though there won’t be any live coverage for the Punjab vs Madhya Pradesh game.

The first semifinal will have live coverage, while the second game will only be streamed live.

The teams will have to report in Bengaluru on June 3, and they will be allowed to train on June 4 and 5, before playing the quarterfinals the next day. Each squad can have 20 players and 10 support staff.

The 26-year old Sindhu, a former world champion, went down to world No 2 Yamaguchi 2113, 19-21, 21-16 in one hour and six minutes for her second bronze medal at the continental event. Mokokchung Friday League from May 6 DIMAPUR, APR 30 (NPN): Mokokchung Friday League an amateur Football League established in 2022 will kick start on May 6 at the Assam Rifles Football Ground, Mokokchung.

The league will be played between clubs from Mokokchung not registered or affiliated to any football association and for the players who are above 35 years of age.

The objective of the league was for recreational and to promote friendship, health and unity through the beautiful game of football amongst non professional players.

The inaugural League will be played between six clubs namely Aturar FC, Royal Enfield Mokokchung, New Ecclesia FC, RevenantFC, Senso Sporting and Terokroker FC.

efforts to create unity through football.

While appreciating sacrifices made by mothers, he recalled how he was raised by a widowed mother with no female sibling.

He said nothing could replace a mother’s love and that it was priceless.

society, he said there was nothing that a woman would not be able to do.

The football coach also shared his delight on how the organizations chose football to promote unity, making the event even more meaningful.

In a brief remark, High School Panchayat ward-1, c h a i r m a n , Ke d u o t u o l i e Mepfhüo said that the sporting event was a day for mothers to have fun, even as they carry out their daily responsibilities.

He informed that the ward is the biggest ward under KMC areawise, covering about 3 KM. As it includes seven localities under one ward, he said that there were several challenges in carrying out any activity(ies).

He therefore lauded the women body for taking the unique initiative to keep the denizens united.

Although football may be a difficult game for mothers, he said that these women have won the people’s hearts as they make efforts to tie people closer.

A total of seven teams representing the areas namely Rokabozou, Se pfüzou, Themezie, Peraciezie, Perizie, Zienuobadze, Khikha-Rüliezou took part in the one-day event.
