AR asked to prevent influx from Myanmar KO L K AT A , M A R 7 (IANS): Union Home Ministry has asked the Assam Rifles to prevent any Myanmar national from crossing into Indian territory and push back any found attempting to cross over. Top sources in the paramilitary force said that the “instructions from the top” was clear and unambiguous-- no Myanmar national should be allowed to enter India without valid visa or travel permit. The India-Myanmar border has a Free Movement Regime (FMR) which allows tribes living along the border to travel 16 km across either side without visa restrictions and on a simple permit issued by local authorities. There are over 250 villages with over 300,000 people living within 10 km of the border who frequently cross through 150 small and large formal and informal crossings. The order follows the considerable embarrassment now faced by New Delhi after Myanmar officially asked for immediate return of eight policemen who had crossed over and sought shelter in Mizoram. The policemen told state authorities that they were hounded down by the army after they refused to open fire on peaceful

demonstrators in the Chin state. It is not clear why the Chin state administration has asked for return of only eight policemen when reports from Mizoram suggest nearly 30 people, mostly policemen and their family members, had taken shelter in Mizoram’s Champhai district after the February 1 military takeover in Myanmar. The Mizoram Home Department confirmed that at least 16 Myanmar nationals, including some policemen, have crossed over into the state. An Indian intelligence official said the Myanmarese are perhaps not yet aware of all those who have fled the country and had confirmed information about only eight policemen whose repatriation has been sought. Champhai district’s Deputy Commissioner Maria CT Zuali said she had received a formal letter from her counterpart in Chin state requesting a “friendly gesture” by handing over the eight Myanmar policemen. Zuali said she was waiting for instructions from the Centre and the Mizoram government. During the 1988 uprising and the massacre of thousands that rocked Myanmar, India opened its borders to those fleeing the crackdown.

Martial law was imposed in Myanmar and new laws passed which enabled the military rulers to restrict or suspend fundamental rights of citizens, including arrests, searches, warrants and detentions without court approvals. Parl Budget session likely to be cut short New Delhi, Mar 7 (Agencies): The second half of the budget session of Parliament is all set to be shortened by almost two weeks due to the ensuing assembly elections in four states. The remaining part of the session might also see resumption of the normal parliamentary schedule of simultaneous proceedings in both Houses from 11 am, Hindustan Times reported. Parliament officials said that the government managers as well as many opposition leaders have requested Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla to cut short the session as leaders would be busy in the campaign for the polls. The second half of the budget session was scheduled to end on April 8. It was indicated that the second half of the session that starts on Monday, may run for a maximum of two weeks.

Oral health awareness camp at Tikenvong DIMAPUR: With an aim to spread awareness about oral health hygiene, a oneday oral health awareness camp was held on February 27, at Tikenvong village under Pungro block, Kiphire district. In a press release CMO office, district media officer Haichikambe Pame stated that the oral health camp was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Weri Mero, dental surgeon from Pungro CHC. It may be mentioned that 120 cases were registered during the day, wherein, 50 oral prophylaxis, 18 extraction, 12 root stump, 10 temporary filling, and 30 fluoride application were carried out. Members of village health committee, village council and the villagers took active part during the event. The camp was organized to promote good oral health and dental hygiene.

DIMAPUR/Kohima, MAR 7 (NPN): On the eve of International Women’s Day (IWD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Minority Morcha, Nagaland organised an event to honour the women for their works in different fields, while in Kohima, Miss Nagaland Vikuonuo Sachü interacted with the girls from Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home (KODH). Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) too joined in the celebration by organising a programme on March 7. Addressing the gathering as guest of honour at the programme organised by BJP Minority Morcha Nagaland at Hotel Saramati, advisor, Tourism and Culture, H.Khehovi Yeputhomi, stated that it was a significant day for multiple reasons, citing fight for gender equality and women’s right as the most important. Yeputhomi stated that a lot has been done towards equality of women, however maintained that there was still more to be achieved. They said that she received the first dose of the vaccine on February 17 last and since then she was treated in different hospitals in the neighbouring state of Assam. She was admitted at Jiribam district hospital on February 27, 10 days after she received the vaccine even though she reportedly started complaining about fever and health weakness on the same day she was administered the vaccine. She was admitted to the hospital after her health condition deteriorated, reports quoted family and relatives of the deceased. As there was no sign of improving her health condition, the authority of the district hospital referred her to a hospital (Alipur hospital) in Cachar town of

agaland faces a huge task in meeting the growing demand for power which is projected to rise to approximately 700 MW by 2040 when number of power consumers is expected to also rise as against the present demand of around 300 MW. The ‘Domestic’ category makes up 47.5 percent of the total 2.87 lakhs metered consumers, as per the Department of Power, Nagaland 2018-19 data. The latest data for 2019-20, estimates the total consumers at 3.3 lakhs with the Domestic category, including BPL consumers, making up a little over 3 lakhs of the total. According to Department of Power Nagaland(DoPN), Nagaland suffers an average shortfall of 21.5 MW during peak load hours in a day. This indicates that there is a considerable gap between demand and availability even presently, catering to future projected demand is a huge challenge in itself, according to Association of Power Engineers Nagaland. According to the 'Vision Document 2021' presented by the Association of Power Engineers Nagaland (APEN) on March 4, on the occasion of World Engineering Day organized by the Federation of Nagaland State Engineering Service Association (FONSESA), Nagaland must take concrete steps to meet the challenges of providing adequate power in the next three years by 2024. Power supplied to the state was around 150 MW to 160 MW from Central sector allocation while the state-owned minihydro power generation was around 24 MW. During monsoon season only 115 MW is available from the central sector and 21 MW from state-owned sector while in lean season it is 98 MW from the central and 12 MW from the state. The other factor that has been a perennial problem is loss of revenue in the power sector. The state government spends nearly Rs.300 crore to buy power to meet the shortfall. However, the revenue receipts show a dismally low collection of hardly Rs.140 to Rs.150 crore annually from government data. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio during the Assembly deliberations on 'Power Reforms' informed that the state has been facing a revenue gap of between Rs 150 crore to Rs 229 crore annually for the last four years. In order to address the problem of loss in revenue, the state government has decided to review the Nagaland Communitisation of Public Institutions and Services Act, 2002 through which the authorities vested responsibilities for management of power and services to the local communities. The village committees on power are expected to collect payments from consumers then deposit with the department after taking 15% commission. In order to meet the growing demands and also in view of acute shortfall in power received from various sources, APEN in its ‘Vision Document 2021’, listed the 20 identified power potentials of the state as under: Dikhu HEP 186 MW, Lower-Tizu HEP 42 MW, Yangnyu HEP 40 MW, Lower-Doyang SHP 24 MW, Tizu-Valley SHP 24 MW, Doyang Stage-Ill SHP 24 MW, Zungki SHP 24 MW, etc. The vision document suggested that the financial institutions fund projects that are taken up only by private developers, companies and corporations or under joint ventures. Further APEN said that the state power sector must be prepared by building adequate capacities of all the three sectors - generation, transmission and distribution. It is hoped that the Vision Document 2021 will be implemented with urgency and utmost efficiency so as to provide power to propel Nagaland to progress and prosperity.

Employment crisis, low wages may stunt growth T he country may continue to have employment crisis as it missed the recipe for quick progress through new job opportunities after a prolonged period of slowdown and recession. The Economic Survey 2020-21 (ES) neither speaks about labour reforms, trends like flexi-staffing nor discusses lack of job creation. The pandemic has led to severe job losses, cut in wages and work from home and social distress. The previous ES discussed about impact of employment or lack of it on the economy. This year it has deviated though a CMIE report estimated that during lockdown 122 million, over 12 crore, people have lost jobs in Bihar, Jharkhand, UP, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala, Himachal, Haryana, Punjab, West Bengal, Assam and other states. The worst hit has been the education. Thousands of private secondary and primary schools have closed down and lakhs have been thrown out of jobs without a sight of these being restored. The small education entrepreneurs have gone broke and are not venturing to

invest in education now. The average employment is estimated at 404 million (40 crore) during 201819. It reduced to 396 million (39 crore) by March 2020. In April, 2020, it reduced by 122 million to about 282 million (28 crore). Since June unlocking, there has been some minor restoration of jobs but in September 2020, the answer given by the labour Minister in Rajya Sabha does not indicate a figure. Some jobs are restored but at wages lower than the pre-pandemic period and many now on daily wages basis. About 15 million less people were employed in December 2020. Salaried employees who accounted for 21 per cent of total employment in 2019-20, accounted for 71 per cent of the total job losses. About 17 crore migrant workers are stated to have lost their jobs, mostly daily wagers or casual workers. About ten crore of them walked back to their distant homes on foot facing inhuman miseries and humiliation by the police in many states, including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, UP, Odisha, Maharashtra, and other states. The ES is silent also about private sector investment that has remained stagnant for at least four years. The social security benefits of workers

And at one point, we have a woman who is the President of the country, another, the president of the ruling party in the Parliament, and chief ministers of 5 States

As we talk about the importance, strength, and achievements of women and the challenges they faced, it is pertinent to note-the improvement in the overall status of women and conversely, the prevalence of stereotypes even after years of preaching gender equality. The subjugation of women that begins even before their births has to stopnow. We have to do better as a society to ensure that our mothers, sisters, and daughters are safe, empowered and equal. While we spread awareness on gender equality, let there be an environment of hope, where the aspirations of women of today are not bogged down by fears for the security of their life but where they could dream about holding any positions of authority. India to launch ‘game-changer’ sat to keep eye on borders

BENGALURU, MAR 9 (PTI): India plans to launch on March 28 an earth observation satellite that will provide it near real-time images of its borders and also enable quick monitoring of natural disasters. GISAT-1 is slated to be lofted into space by GSLVF10 rocket from Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district, about 100 kms north of Chennai. “We are looking to launch this Geo imaging satellite on March 28, subject to weather conditions”, an official of the Bengaluruheadquartered Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) told PTI on Sunday. The rocket will place the spacecraft in a geosynchronous orbit. It will be subsequently positioned in geostationary orbit, about 36,000 kilometres above earth’s equator, using its onboard propulsion system. The launch of GISAT-1 onboard GSLV-F10 rocket was originally planned for March 5 last year but postponed a day before the blastoff due to technical reasons. The third objective is to obtain spectral signatures of agriculture, forestry, mineralogy, disaster warning, cloud properties, snow and glacier and oceanography. GISAT-1 will facilitate

The planned launch of GISAT-1, weighing about 2,268 kg, comes close on the heels of the successful February 28 PSLV- C51 mission that orbited Brazil’s earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 and 18 copassengers, including five built by students. Secretary in the Department of Space and Isro chairman K Sivan told PTI last week that the technical issues that led to postponement of GISAT-1 mission have been resolved and the further delay in the launch was due to Covid-19-induced lockdown which affected normal work. According to sources, GISAT-1 will be followed by the maiden flight of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, Isro’s compact launcher, likely in April. SSLV has been designed to meet “launch on demand” requirements in a cost-effective manner for small satellites in a dedicated and ride-share mode. It is a three-stage all solid vehicle with a capability to launch up to 500 kg satellite mass into 500 km low earth orbit (LEO) and 300 kg into Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).

Women to take centre stage at farmers’ protest sites

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI): From managing the stage, food and security to sharing tales of their struggles, and significance of taking part in the farmers’ agitation, thousands of women farmers, students and activists will take over key roles at the Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur protest sites at Delhi’s borders on International Women’s Day on Monday. Noting that women contribute significantly to the country’s farming sector, the organisers have laid out elaborate plans to let women farmers take centre stage and all the space under the sky to acknowledge the “big but unrecognised” part of the farming community. Thousands of women farmers especially from Punjab and Haryana will congregate at Delhi’s borders on Monday and the day will be entirely dedicated to women farmers, activists and students, farmer leaders said. Marked annually on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the

The protesting farmers have expressed appre-

hension that these laws would pave the way for the dismantling of the MSP system, leaving them at the “mercy” of big corporations. However, the government has maintained that the new laws will bring better opportunities to farmers and introduce new technologies in agriculture. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, around 15,000 women farmers along with college principals, teachers and social workers will join the protest sites at Singhu and Tikri borders, the organisers said. “Women are a big part of the farming community but they don’t get recognised. In fact, they work more than the men. Approximately 10,000 women from different parts of Punjab and Haryana will come to the borders to be part of the women’s day program,” farmer leader Kulwant Singh Sandhu said. Sandhu said they have also asked women farmers to join the different protest sites in Punjab and Haryana on the occasion.

Women protesters will talk about their rights, struggles and significance of participation in the movement at the two stages at Tikri border, one of the organisers said. “...Women will be taking over security roles at Singhu border. Hundreds of women from different parts of Punjab are coming in vehicles and will join us at the borders tomorrow. Mumbai, Mar 7 (PTI): The Maharashtra Congress on Sunday said the family of Mansukh Hiren, who was in possession of the vehicle that was later found with explosives outside the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani, must get justice at the earliest. The car, a Scorpio, with 20 gelatin sticks inside was found near ‘Antilia’, Ambani’s multi-storey residence in south Mumbai, on February 25. Police had said the vehicle was stolen from Airoli-Mulund Bridge on February 18. Hiren (46) was found dead in a creek in neighbouring Thane on March 5. The Maharashtra AntiTerrorism Squad (ATS) has taken over the probe into the entire matter. State Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant in a statement expressed hope that the ATS will go into the root of the case of Hiren’s death and unravel the “conspiracy” behind it. “The family of Mansukh Hiren must get justice at the earliest,” he said. Rome, Mar 7 (PTI): Living up to the expectations, star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat grabbed the 53kg gold medal along with world No 1 rank while Bajrang Punia booked his spot in the final of the men’s 65kg event the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series event, here on Sunday. It was second gold medal for Vinesh in as many weeks with a dominant win as the 26year-old World bronze medallist blanked Canada’s Diana Mary Helen Weicker 4-0 in the title clash. Vinesh scored all her points in the first period and held on to her lead in the second to ensure a top-of-thepodium finish. Vinesh had won a gold medal in Kiev last week and this performance would give her the belief that her preparations for the Tokyo Olympics are on the right track. was ranked as low as 40 before the tournament but is now just behind Vinesh at number two. Vinesh did not concede a single point at this tournament, winning two of her three bouts by pinning her rivals while getting injury walkouts in the other two in the eight-woman field.
