galand and its inhabitants?”. The WG made it clear that they will not oppose any acceptable solution and arrangement that fulfilled the aspirations of Nagas of Manipur. They also informed the government of India that the territory of present Nagaland state “should not be infringed at any cost nor transplant population from beyond the boundary of present Nagaland state, while arriving at a solution with NSCN (I-M)”. “The GoI must initiate prompt steps to finalize acceptable solution for Nagas outside Nagaland state,” WG stated. The WG also acknowledged that Nagas lie scattered across Myanmar, Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and maintained social, culture and historical affinity for decades. However, WG said the arbitrary division of “our land and people” and the attempt to destroy people’s distinct history and identity by Great Britain, government of India and Myanmar “is a crime against humanity”. They warned that nations responsible for “tearing Naga homeland apart shall answerable” during three quarters of a century
of death and destruction in Naga homeland. Therefore, having suffered at the hand of “occupational forces” through weakness and divisions among Nagas , it was natural to pursue “our rightful place in the world”, Nagas across the length and breadth of Myanmar and India should understand that “if physical integration of Naga areas is not possible at a present time,” then the government of India and Nagas of mainland Nagaland should arrive at an honourable and acceptable solution, while maintaining emotional integration with Nagas across artificial boundaries.” The WG reiterated that present Nagaland state has been the cradle of Naga political struggle and “idealism and gross political assumptions and historical errors must be corrected through practical political steps.” WG further appealed to all tribes in Nagaland state in particular and Nagas in general, to prepare themselves for “greater responsibilities in the near future” and added that the longer the government of India held people to ransom, the people of Nagaland ‘shall not rest”.
Dimapur, Mar 7 (NPN): Several cabinet ministers and parliamentary secretaries have issued a strong reminder that all legislators still support T.R. Zeliang and indicated that his return as chief minister was imminent. Making this stunning declaration, barely two weeks after Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü took over as chief minister from T.R. Zeliang against the backdrop of massive public demands for his resignation, Media & Press Bureau (M&PB) of the NPF, Central Office disclosed that the statements to this effect were made at the launching of National Rurban Mission at Pedi (Ngwalwa) in Peren district on Tuesday morning. M&PB said the legislators lamented that despite enjoying support T.R. Zeliang had to step down due to the “violent mobs who demanded his resignation within a specific period” and for which he (Zeliang) “gracefully resigned for the sake of peace and harmony in the society.” According to M&PB, PHED minister Chotisuh Sazo claimed that though all 60 members of the assembly supported T.R. Zeliang, he “sacrificed for the sake of peace and harmony in the society.” Further Sazo reasserted that the decision to conduct elections to ULBs was a collective one to “pre-empt the Supreme Court from passing any adverse decision which would affect Article 371A.” Sazo said civic societies protested against ULB elections with 33% women reservation to protect traditional and customary practices as enshrined in Article 371A but when vested political interests entered the
DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): “Working Group” (WG) of five Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) drew attention on various statements made by union home minister Rajnath Singh, MoS Home Kiren Rijiju and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the recent election campaign in Manipur where they had stated that ‘Manipur’ was not mentioned in the framework agreement and vowed that “no force on earth can disintegrate Manipur territorial integrity.” The WG in a joint statement issued by- 1.GPRN/ NSCN (M.B. Neokpao/N. Kitovi Zhimomi; 2.NSCN (R);3.NNC(Parent Body) Z. Royim/V. Nagi; .NNC/ NPGN (Hozheto/Tsanthungo) and 5.NNC/GDRN (Kiumukam/Hetoi), said they were raising the issue to enable Naga people to know the bare facts confronting them. If there was no question of integration, then was
there any more need to continue talks with the NSCN (I-M)?, asked WG. Further they asked how could the government of India “even think about political solution in Nagaland” without involving them? They also pointed to the statement made on February 28 by the parliamentary standing committee, headed by P. Chidambaram, former union home minister, that all groups (stakeholders) must be taken on board to arrive at a solution and that even neighbouring states must also be consulted. They said it was unwise to entrust the state governments of Manipur, Assam or Arunachal Pradesh, to decide on the destiny of Nagas of mainland Nagaland. The WG opined that since integration has been set aside, will the government of India call upon the neighbouring state governments to “decide the existence and future of Na-
Terror alert sounded across India: MHA
2 terrorists holed up in Lucknow; ops continues
NEW DELHI, MAR 7 (AGENCIES): The Centre today sounded an alert across the country in the wake of a suspected terrorist, having possible links to a train blast in Madhya Pradesh, hiding in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh. “We are alert. We have sounded an alert all over the country,” Union Minister of State for Home, Hansraj Ahir told reporters here. The minister said that the Uttar Pradesh Police was doing a commendable job to nab the terrorist holed up in a house in Kakori area in the outskirts of Lucknow. “Terrorists do not have any ideology and create disturbances whenever they get a chance. The police is on the job to nab such elements,” he said. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad has launched an operation to flush out the suspected terrorist holed up in a house on the outskirts of Lucknow following inputs that he may be linked to Bhopal-Ujjain train blast this morning. The encounter in Lucknow began hours after blast on the Bhopal-Ujjain train, where at least eight people were injured.

NEW DELHI, Mar 7 (Agencies): The hourslong gunfight in Lucknow between two suspected ISIS operatives and Uttar Pradesh’s Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) continued late on Tuesday night as the alleged terrorists remained holed up and refused to surrender. One of the men is believed to be one Saiful and
he’s allegedly involved in this morning’s bomb attack on a train in Madhya Pradesh. “The operation is still on. We thought initially that there is one youth inside, but there are two,” said Daljit Chaudhary, ADG Law & Order, to ANI. “The suspect holed up in Lucknow belongs to a localised group, influenced
by ISIS and its literature,” Daljit Chaudhary told PTI. He also said that since the operation was taking place in a restrained manner, it could take some more time. The ATS, based on “concrete” information from intelligence sources, had gone to apprehend Saiful for suspected involvement in the train blast. The suspected terrorists then suddenly began to fire on the ATS team from the house in Thakurganj’s Haji Colony, a densely populated neighbourhood. Following this, ATS commandos returned fire at Saiful and the other suspected militant who were on the first floor. An official at the site said that they were trying to ensure the duo is arrested alive and there is no collateral damage as this is a residential area. While there was an initial exchange of fire,
the gunfire stopped briefly, after which the ATS commandoes lobbed chili bombs inside the house to incapacitate the suspect. That didn’t work. Police have since cordoned off the area in the colony and have asked people to stay indoors. Some adjacent houses have been asked to vacate as well. With the operation continuing into the night, toplevel equipment like night vision glasses, ambulances, fire brigades and additional security reinforcements have been summoned. At least eight persons were injured in an explosion in a passenger train, going to Ujjain from Bhopal, in Madhya Pradesh’s Shajapur district on Tuesday, authorities said. “We got a lead on these operatives from outside the state and we are on the trail,” said ADG (Law and Order) Chaudhary.

movement, T.R. Zeliang had to resign. Er. Picto parl. secretary law and justice and SIRD echoed the same by saying that all 59 legislators supported the leadership of T.R. Zeliang but that he had to vacate his seat due to “outside forces.” Er. Picto also illustrated the point with a narrative. C.L. John minister of RD and REPA and guest of honour on the occasion, spoke about how T.R. Zeliang was “crucified for no fault of his” and how the government was saved by his “supreme sacrifice.” He said the CM’s chair did not belong to any single person and cited how Dr. Hokishe and Dr S.C. Jamir both vacated the chair but reoccupied it. In the same, way C.L. John expressed confidence that T.R. Zeliang would reoccupy the chair. He further claimed that NPF would continue “till the second coming of Christ” . He also said after the smooth transition, NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü “magnanimously parted with most of his powers to make T.R. Zeliang as comfortable as
he can be.” C.L. John also mentioned projects launched when T.R. Zeliang was chief minister such as national highways, road black topping and bridge constructions in Peren district. Khekaho Assumi, parl. secretary YR&S said people of Peren should not be disappointed since there was no doubt even for a moment that T.R. Zeliang would “come back to head the state sooner or later.” He also echoed the same point that holding ULB polls was a collective decision of the cabinet where even parl. secretaries were invited to give their opinions. Advisor Finance, T.R. Zeliang was the chief guest for launching the state’s first National Rurban Mission at Ngalwa which is to provide facilities to rural and village dwellers having population from 5000 to 15,000. Zeliang was accompanied by ministers-- Longon, C.L. John, Chotisuh Sazo, G Kaito Aye and parl. secys.- Tohanba, S Chuba, T. Amenba Yaden, Eshak Konyak, Er. Picto, Er. Levi, Yolow, Toyang, Khekaho and Khumo. (More on p-3)

DoSE on fund release for implementation of CSS Manipur: Poll official, AR jawan injured DIMAPUR, MAR 7 (NPN): Drawing attention to the issues relating to delay in payment and non payment of teachers’ salaries under centrally sponsored schemes (CSS) of SSA, language teachers (Hindi) and RMSA, the Department of School Education (DoSE) has sought to bring out the “factual position” of the releases of funds for implementation of various CSS like SSA, RMSA and Hindi teachers. In a press release, the principal secretary to the government of Nagaland, FP Solo, pointed out that for 2016-17, an amount of Rs. 30780.84 lakh was approved by the Programme Approval Board (PAB) for implementation of various components including recurring and non-recurring grants under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) Out of the approved budget, Solo said the share of the Centre, which is 90%, was Rs. 27070.96 lakh. He said the Centre so far has released Rs. 10725.34 lakh in three instalments – May 10, 2016 (Ad hoc) Rs. 2600 lakh; November 11, 2016 (1st) Rs. 5813.46 and February 16, 2017 (2nd) Rs. 2311.88. Principal secretary said there
were strict guidelines and norms for utilization of funds for recurring and non-recurring grants, adding that general and recurring grant cannot be used for non-recurring grant and viceversa. Salary comes under General and recurring grant, he said. Solo said out of the 2nd instalment of Rs. 2311.88 lakhs, which the department was yet to receive including state matching share, the department would therefore be able to meet only two months’ salary of SSA teachers from November to December, 2016. He said the department was however hopeful of getting more release from the Ministry of Human Resource Development during March 2017 to meet the salary requirement for the remaining months of 2016-17. Principal secretary said though the annual work plan of the state under SSA was approved after thorough appraisal, the department was informed by the MHRD that BE for SSA during the current year 2016-17 was Rs. 22,500 crore against the overall approved PAB outlay of Rs. 74,248 crore for all 36 States and UTs of which the central component comes to
Rs. 46,700 crore. He said MHRD was reportedly making all efforts to secure additional funds at RE stage from the Ministry of Finance. Under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) scheme, the principal secretary said during the 2016-17, the PAB had approved an amount of Rs. 7747.08 lakh out of which Rs. 3548.07 lakh for nonrecurring grant and Rs. 4199.00 lakhs was for recurring grant. An amount of Rs. 3983.33 lakh out of the recurring grant was meant for teachers’ salary, he said. Out of the PAB approved outlay of Rs. 7747.08 lakhs during 2016-17, Solo said the Centre has released Rs. 2519.58 in three instalments – May 3, 2016 (ad hoc) Rs. 105.14 lakh; July 11, 2016 (1st) Rs. 1321.27 lakh and November 26, 2016 (1st) Rs.1083.17. Informing that release of the 2nd instalment was awaited from the MHRD, Solo said department would be releasing at least two months’ salary of RMSA teachers for the months of November and December, 2016 within March as soon as fund was released by the Centre. All the six assembly segments under Churachandpur and new Pherzawl district went to polls peacefully in the first phase poll on March 4. However, tension ran high in Churachandpur town and its adjoining areas the very next day (March 5) after two brothers were brutally assaulted by a group of miscreants. Registering strong protest against the assault on Thangmuansang (26) and his younger brother Thangsuanmung (16) of Lamzang village, the town observed a dawn to dusk total shut-
down on Monday (March 6). However, on Tuesday a woman identified as Baby, wife of another brother of Thangmuansang, was brutally beaten up by miscreants. As the news spread like wildfire, villagers of Lamzang and its adjoining areas rose up and blocked all kinds of vehicular movement in the area. They demanded handing over of the two persons arrested by the police earlier in connection with assault case of two brothers. As people took to the streets, irate mob torched at least four vehicles in protest and also targeted the residence of former minister, Phungjathang Tonsing, who left Congress joined NPP to contest the polls. Even though the ruling Congress and BJP were the strong contenders of the polls in the first phase polls, Naga People Party (NPF) is one of the strong contenders in the second phase. NPF is fielding its candidates in 11 out of the 22 assembly segments in which the ruling Congress and BJP are also sending out its candidates in all the seats. CPI is contesting in two seats, Trinamool Congress in six seats, NCP in one while PRJA in two seats. Nine independent candidates are also in the fray.

Imphal, Mar 7: The stage is set for the grand finale to the crucial Manipur assembly polls as the second and the last phase covering 22 seats will be held Wednesday, with all eyes on the chief minister’s assembly constituency Thoubal and Naga dominated hill districts. The last phase poll is crucial as there are multiple issues like Naga integration, Manipur’s territorial integrity besides Irom Sharmila’s anti-AFSPA campaign before the electors. Eleven constituencies spread over seven Naga dominated hill districts along with Thoubal assembly segment where human right activist turned political Irom Sharmila is contesting with incumbent chief minister O Ibobi Singh, will be in prime focus. Deputy chief minister Gaikhangam is also in fray from Nungba (ST reserved seat) of Naga dominated Noney district. However, no NPF candidate is in the fray from this constituency. The Naga dominated constituencies are being the prime focus as other political parties including the ruling Congress and BJP are sending out their candidates against Unit-
ed Naga Council (UNC) backed Naga People Front (NPF) candidates. NPF Manipur State Unit, in its election manifesto promised to work for unity and integrity of Naga people while the Congress and BJP are campaigning with the promise to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur. In its election manifesto, NPF promised “to work for unity and integrity of the people by integrating all contiguous Naga inhabited areas under one administrative roof and also to provide protection to all the ethnic groups who are indigenous inhabitants of all Naga inhabited areas.” The NPF also promised to work and assist in any possible manner on any approach for peaceful solution of the Indo-Naga political issue and to stand against any force to further divide the Nagas. On the other hand, economic blockade, Naga accord (framework agreement), state’s territorial integrity, etc were among the main poll agenda of both the ruling Congress and BJP, wresting for power with aggressive campaign in the run up to the two phase polls. Homoeopath who ran Sangli DU prof gets life imprisonment for Maoist links abortion racket held in Belagavi Verdict shocking and undemocratic: Saibaba’s wife
G.N. Saibaba victed Saibaba, 47, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and found him and his associates guilty of conspiring and being a member of the terrorist outfit and offences relating to support given to the Leftist rebels. Saibaba was in April last year granted bail by the Supreme Court and exempted from personal appearance on the grounds of his deteriorating health. Besides the DU teacher, the court also convicted Jawaharlal Nehru University student Hem Mishra and former journalist Prashant Rahi - both arrested in 2013 for their nexus with the Left wing extremists. Saibaba came under police scanner after the JNU student confessed to police that he was acting as a courier between the English professor and Maoist leaders, including Puppalla Laxman Rao alias Ganapathy.
Hours after Delhi University professor G.N. Saibaba was sentenced on Tuesday to life imprisonment for “Maoist connections”, his wife expressed her shock and accused the central government of following a RSS agenda in pressurising the judiciary for a favourable outcome. “This judgement is shocking. In the history of Maharashtra this is the first case in which all the persons chargesheeted were convicted in all the sections with life imprisonment,” Vasanta Kumari said in a statement. “No evidence has been proved by the prosecution... electronic evidence were not sealed. It seems the state and Central governments have put a lot of pressure on the judiciary to implement anti-people and undemocratic policies at the behest of corporates and MNCs,” she said. Vasanta Kumari said that she will fight for her husband’s freedom in the higher courts and urged the civil society members to condemn the “undemocratic character of the government”. “Honouring the court, Saibaba has been attending it in all these years including
today, despite his deteriorating health. As a wife I will fight in the higher courts to seek justice. “The government has been putting relentless pressure on my family for the last four years by raiding my house in Delhi. I appeal to democracy champions, peoples’ organisations, intellectuals, students to condemn such undemocratic character of the government,” she said. Vasanta Kumari noted that after the verdict was announced, the pleas advocating cooperative behaviour towards Saibaba - who is wheelchair-bound and 90 per cent disabled - were also rejected by the judge. “Judge rejected to issue any order on the appeal of our advocate... (who) asked him to issue an order directing the jail authorities to give required medicines, help of assistants for Saibaba’s movement, operation to be performed for gall bladder etc,” she added. A sessions court in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli sentenced the suspended Ram Lal Anand College professor for having connections with banned Communist Party of India-Maoist and its “front” Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF). He was convicted, among other charges, for hatching a “criminal conspiracy to
wage war” against the nation. Apart from him, a total of five other persons, including a Jawaharlal University student, were also convicted. Saibaba was arrested in 2014 by Maharashtra Police but later granted bail on health grounds.
ABVP hails life imprisonment verdict for G.N. Saibaba
RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Tuesday welcomed the life-imprisonment sentence awarded to DU professor G.N. Saibaba, saying the latter played a big role in spreading Maoism in urban areas. “Saibaba was instrumental in spreading the ideology of Mao in urban areas. It has been proven by the court that he was in touch with the Maoists hiding in jungles and used to work for them from the city. He worked as a mediator for them on a national and international level both,” ABVP said in a statement. It alleged that Saibaba spread the ideology and aided recruitment of Maoists in many universities of the country, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU). His state of disability also worked in his favour to garner sympathy, it said.
Pune Mar 7 (Agencies): The Sangli police on late Monday night arrested Babasaheb Khidrapure, the homeopath who ran an illicit abortion racket in the district’s Mhaisal village, after the discovery of as many as 19 aborted female foetuses dumped in a sewer. The death of a 26year-old Swati Jamdade on March 3 during a botched termination of her pregnancy, blew the lid off Dr. Khidrapure’s racket. Dr. Khidrapure and his wife were on the run since then. He finally fell into the Sangli police’s dragnet and was arrested late night Monday from Belagavi in the neighbouring State of Karnataka. He was produced amid high security at a local court in Miraj on Tuesday afternoon and sentenced to 10-day police custody till March 17. The village of Mhaisal witnessed a total shutdown in protest against the doctor’s heinous crimes, with citizens demanding speedy justice. The case once more has sharply fore-grounded the rampant female foeticide and gender inequality prevalent in the State’s rural hinterland. According to police sources and Sangli district authorities, Dr. Khidrapure
Dr.Khidrapure being produced at Sangli court. was believed to be running an inter-State racket since 2008, involving doctors and patients from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, who came to his clinic, ‘Bharati Hospital’, to get the abortions done. “Other doctors used to visit him to get these extra-legal operations done, which normally took place on Mondays. The ground floor of his ‘clinic’ was equipped with surgical instruments, bio-medical mass and allopathy medicines. His accomplices then used a back-door to throw the aborted foetus in the sewer,” said the Sangli Superintendent of Police Dattatrey Shinde. Dr. Khidrapure had
two rooms, hidden out of sight and equipped with instruments to perform the abortions in the ground floor of his two-storey ‘hospital’. The police said that since he did not have sonography machines, some doctors used to send patients to him for performing illegal abortions once the sonography tests had been conducted.

Mumbai, March 7 (IANS): Delhi University professor G.N. Saibaba, who is wheelchair-bound, was on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment by a Maharashtra court for his links with Maoists. The Gadchiroli Sessions Court handed out life imprisonment to four others while their sixth accomplice was jailed for 10 years. The suspended English professor of Ram Lal Anand College, Delhi University, was arrested in May 2014 from Delhi. The prosecution claimed that incriminating documents, compact discs and pen drives containing literature about the banned Communist Party of IndiaMaoist were recovered from his possession. The court noted that the accused had conspired “to create violence, cause public disorder and spread disaffection towards the central government and the state government”. “In pursuance of the said criminal conspiracy, the accused were found in possession of printed Naxal literature” that was to be circulated “amongst the members of banned CPI-Maoist and its frontal organisation (Revolutionary Democratic Front) RDF and other persons for creating violence and causing public disorder.” Judge S.S. Dangerous games
fter creating history by delivering a shocking victory and astounding the entire globe, US President Donald Trump who was never taken seriously as a candidate, on the contrary is being taken too seriously now. On November 8,2016 Trump won by a landslide with 304 electoral votes while 227 votes went for Clinton. The Democratic Party-leaning and liberal US mainstream media has been at war with Trump. Even the Washington establishment is working hard to make it impossible for Donald Trump get his cabinet together by inordinately delaying confirmation of his nominees. The Washing establishment wants to ensure that Trump does not ditch the warmongering policies previous administrations pursued, and to make it difficult for him to deliver on his pledge to mend relations with Russia. Making money out of war mongering has been big business in the USA. These include not only members of the Democratic Party, who staked everything on Clinton’s victory, but also Republicans from the war establishment camp, like Sen. John McCain. They have all come together against US President Donald Trump’s plans to build good relations with other countries. Such foreign policy strategy may deal a blow to their hawkish worldview. The media in conjunction with the Democratic Party have been orchestrating anti-Trump rhetoric and organising protest demonstrations. To cite an instance, barely twelve hours after Virginia’s two Democratic senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, voted to confirm Michael Pompeo, President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the CIA, the protests began. There were than 100 protesters gathered outside Warner’s constituent offices in the Virginia suburbs of Washington. What Trump is facing today is backlash by the forces of liberalism, fuelled largely by anti-Trump fake news bombarded by US mainstream media. In the West, liberalism is associated with the strengthening of democracy, justice, free market, free movement, pluralism and multiculturalism. These fundamental concepts had evolved so much that the essence of American values which the early immigrants had reflected in the American constitution, have been greatly eroded. Europeans and Americans who hold on to the traditional values that had seen their countries prosper, today are angry that all that they have done to build their socioeconomic structures are about to disintegrate under the weight of liberalism. Trump has championedanti abortion, ban on muslim and immigrants, cutting down on US involvement with NATO and new medi care etc. Trump’s open declarations of bringing about changes are being seen as a massive dose of anti-liberal ideologies. Trump faces an uphill task in trying to free America from the disease of liberalism which has erased the traditional American values which has been replaced with global values where everyone and anyone can be an American and not have to adapt to the American tradition of the adopted country. That means America is no longer a land of opportunity for all but a land for everyone who insist they can follow their own beliefs and can reject American values. The entire mainstream liberal media, the establishment, immigrants, both legal and illegal, feminists, LGBT, pro-abortionists and top corporate honchos may be too far apart from each other but what unites them is common hatred for Trump. The plan is to create every obstacle against Trump and ensure he becomes a totally lame duck president fit to be impeached.
DailyDevotion The Source of Abundant Joy
In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. —Romans 8:37 Paul was speaking here of the things that might seem likely to separate a saint from the love of God. But the remarkable thing is that nothing can come between the love of God and a saint. The things Paul mentioned in this passage can and do disrupt the close fellowship of our soul with God and separate our natural life from Him. But none of them is able to come between the love of God and the soul of a saint on the spiritual level. The underlying foundation of the Christian faith is the undeserved, limitless miracle of the love of God that was exhibited on the Cross of Calvary; a love that is not earned and can never be. Paul said this is the reason that “in all these things we are more than conquerors.” We are super-victors with a joy that comes from experiencing the very things which look as if they are going to overwhelm us. Huge waves that would frighten an ordinary swimmer produce a tremendous thrill for the surfer who has ridden them. Let’s apply that to our own circumstances. The things we try to avoid and fight against— tribulation, suffering, and persecution— are the very things that produce abundant joy in us. “We are more than conquerors through Him” “in all these things”; not in spite of them, but in the midst of them. A saint doesn’t know the joy of the Lord in spite of tribulation, but because of it. Paul said, “I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation” (2 Corinthians 7:4). The undiminished radiance, which is the result of abundant joy, is not built on anything passing, but on the love of God that nothing can change. And the experiences of life, whether they are everyday events or terrifying ones, are powerless to “separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

he International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on 8th March every year to mark the contribution of women to society across the globe. The UN Women’s theme for IWD- 2017 is “Women in the changing world of work: Planet 50:50 by 2030” with the campaign hash tag # BeBoldForChange. It calls out for a strong and powerful message worldwide, to work towards gender equality. The idea of this theme is to consider and develop strategies in fulfilling the commitment made by the International community in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Goal 5 of the SDGs is to: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Some of the key targets to achieve the 2030 Agendas are: • By 2030, to ensure all girls and boys complete free, equality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and Goal-4 effective learning outcomes. • By 2030, to ensure all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and preprimary education so that they are ready for primary education. • To end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls ever where. • To eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation. • To eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutila-
T
he recent outbreak of violence in Nagaland has left many people puzzled and terrified. Modern Naga society is known to find peaceful solution to any of its problems amicably. However, this time the situation took an ugly turn leading to loss of lives, economy and total confusion in the state. It is time to introspect, interrogate and examine the factors which had led to the outbreak of the recent violence in the state and provide some possible directions for future course of action. As is well known the violence initially started with the opposition on the issue of 33% women reservation in UBL election. This was seen to be bypassing the guarantee to the customary laws granted in Article 371A of the Indian constitution. This threat of bypass set up alarm bells in Nagaland. It triggered off a spate of social media campaign, and whisper campaigns in the Naga community. This snowballed into street protests, demonstrations and several rounds of meetings between the state government and civil societies. It is in the course of these protests that three people were killed in police firing, many government buildings were burnt down and mayhem ensued. There

Looking at the ambitious goals set by the UN and reflecting on the current scenario of our State, we definitely have a long way to go in achieving holistic empowerment of women. In the globalized and digitalized world we live in today, there is increasing challenge faced by women to be adequately equipped to fit into the changing world of work. Enhancing the quality of education, exploring unconventional forms of vocational training, preventing the drop-out rate and encouraging higher education are some key indicators that must be focused upon. Women must be economically empowered, for them to gain confidence to participate and involve in any socio-political forum. With the advent of education, many women have chosen to establish themselves as career oriented women rather than being confined within the four walls of their homes. They have also begun to establish a strong foothold as bureaucrats. It is very encouraging to see women entrepreneurs doing exceptionally well. Women have also entered into different field, which were earlier stereotyped as male domain. As per 2011 census out of the total work force, women contribute to about 43.81 % in the state. However, women are more vulnerable due to the growing informality of labour (unorganized sector), unstable livelihoods and incomes, which needs be addressed in the context of women’s economic empowerment. Women are seen engaged in unorganized sec-
tors as daily wage laborers, vegetable vendors and domestic help etc. Women also carry forth the traditional works like weaving, cooking and stitching etc. Apart from their conventional roles of attending to the welfare of the household, women have worked alongside men in society-building, and improvement of the standards of life and pursuit of other goals. Women have additional responsibilities to take care of domestic work and also handle work in the offices or various agricultural activities. It is unfortunate that women are subjected to different forms of violence which are often hushed due to stigma attached to it. The 181-Women Helpline (WHL) and One Stop Center (OSC) were launched in Nagaland in June, 2016. Within four months of its introduction, 181- WHL recorded 44 cases - 6 cases of domestic violence, 1 rape case, 2 obscene call cases, and the rest relating to other crimes against women. Meanwhile, OSC recorded a total of 7 cases in the same year. With the year just beginning, 181-WHL has already recorded 2 cases of violence against women. There are many instances where the victims hesitated to approach the Police or the appropriate authorities in spite of the assurance of full assistance. There are many cases which are not reported. Generally young girls are preferred to be kept as domestic help and there are many cases of them being abused; women are vulnerable to being subjected to sexual harassment
at workplace which are not often discussed or reported; women are victims of trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation and cheap labour. And the list goes on. (The 181- Women Helpline assists the victims/callers by way of giving counseling, guidance and facilitate them in approaching the appropriate authority. OSC provides integrated services to victims of violence under one roof)). The challenges are many. All key stakeholders- both Government and non- government agencies must collectively strive together in making our society more inclusive of women in all development aspects. This inter national Women’s day, the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland in collaboration with Nagaland State Social Welfare Board, Women Studies Centre, Nagaland University and State Resource Centre for Women is organizing the “International Women’s Day 2017” on the same theme of the UN Women, at Nagaland University, Kohima Campus. We acknowledge all the other organizations who are gearing up to celebrate this event to acknowledge the women in our society in different districts. While celebrating the lives of the women who have contributed to the socio-economic development of our society and beyond, it is also a time to reflect on things we can collectively do for women and with women. Let us be #BeBoldForChange. State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW)Nagaland Chapter
nternational women’s Day is celebrated every year on 8th March, recognizing and appreciating women’s Political, Economic and Social achievements over the decades. Women’s Day was first observed in 1909 in the United States and it is only in 1977 that the United Nation officially declared International Women’s Day celebration on 8th March every year. An event which started as a political affair has evolved over the years and is now celebrated by gifting flowers ,greetings cards and gifts to women in most regions. International women’s Day is also an official holiday in several countries like Belarus , Armenia, Albania, Brazil and Cameron. On this occasion we should endeavor building a better world where men and women live harmoniously free of violence and discrimination. It is indeed very special day for women where they are glorified to a point of being honored, awarded and appreciated then why is that after so much awareness and acknowledgement of a women’s contribution to life, society family and work she is still is considered only second to men and treated like a second rate citizen? This is because for generations it has been ingrained among women that they are not capable of doing most things. Women Empowerment lies honoring yourself and treating with respect “No can put you down without your Permission”. On this special day I would like to say empowering women is very necessary to bring gender equality or we can say that gender equality is very necessary to empower women. Gender equality is the first step to bring women empower-
Situating the recent violence in Nagaland
were demands of the resignation of the CM and what followed was a state unrest amongst the Nagas at large. One may interrogate whether the state of affairs was only due to the question of 33% women reservation or were there other issues involved as well. It may be opined that the protest also brought in several issues related to frustration of youth regarding the state government’s inability to fulfill their dreams and aspirations, some elements of political conspiracy, and some level of threat to men because of women empowerment which people are not courageous enough to admit the reality. The youth today are loosing their confidence in the state leadership and feel threatened of their dreams and aspirations going in vain. Unemployment rate among the Naga youth is very high. Even those who are employed by the state government do not get their salaries on time and are consequently put to hardship and frustration. It is also observed that the state of education is pathetic in both schools and colleges run by the state government. Basically, the quality of teaching is very low and large number
of teachers, especially, who are posted in villages do not teach and some are even keeping proxy teachers in their place. To make worse, the infrastructure facilities of the educational institutions are also badly maintained. Even the infrastructure such as roads is making traveling for both work and education very difficult. The economy in Nagaland is also lagging behind and is not contributing to the general sense of well being of the population. Inspite of all these realities, it is felt that there was an element of factors of politics (or politicking) which exploited these situations and had contributed to the recent violence in the state. Now the question is whether politicking was needed, especially, when the state is challenged with bad economy, high unemployment rate, health issue, education, corruption, terrible infrastructure, Naga political settlement etc? Moreover, the question on whether the approach of the civil societies was appropriate in addressing the issue? Does the engagement of a prolonged dialogue with state government justify the violent action? The civil societies would have taken a better alternative
approach and not a violent path which had caused loss of lives, enormous damage in terms of public properties including personal records of thousands of employees in the state. After weighing all the factors and issues, the following points may be suggested for the issue: 1. The recent outbreak of violence is an outcome of many socio-political factors taking a complex shape. This is also to argue that the issue can hardly be understood as an issue of women empowerment alone. Understanding the Naga identity and culture vis-à-vis article 371A will give a clearer perspective. Many experts argue that the present provision of women reservation may prove to be a threat to the state’s autonomy as granted in the Constitution and may have even more serious consequences later. 2. Universally, Customs and traditions are seldom static. Therefore, customs and cultural traditions which have been practiced historically need not continue in toto should the people feel the need for change. Needless to say, one should also think seriously as customs also represent cultural uniqueness and authority
like it is practiced in Naga Society. 3. The present sense of confusion or a communication gap has to be addressed with a sustained dialogue among genders, Hohos, unions, associations and even among individuals to help us understand the issue deeply and shape our future directions. After all, this is so central to our culture. 4. The very idea of framing or maintaining ‘Laws’ in every society (traditional or modern) is directed towards ensuring ‘justice and fairness’ in society and also well-being at large. Therefore, Nagas need to relook and question whether any part of the customary laws have any section which seemingly deprives gender equality and a level playing field in society. 5. It is a fact Naga women today have shown their potential and excellence in all walks of life and have made the state proud through their achievements in so many ways. Therefore, it may be strongly opined that Naga women do deserve a dignified space in Naga society while taking care of the core values and structures of the Naga society. 6. The announcement of ensuring 33 per cent political participation may not
Things will never change
ith the change of guard in Nagaland ministry, people expect a lot to happen which of course is practically impossible. Of course, a lot of opinions have been made during the last couple of weeks when Nagaland was plunged into chaos. It is not only the present government which has earned the people’s ire but the build-up of what had been happening in the last three decades or so. Successive governments have come
and gone and even after nearly 54 years, the progress of Nagaland is negligible. Not all politicians and bureaucrats are greedy and some really want to work for the people. However, if such persons were/or is not elected back to power then how could they bring progress for their own people, let alone the entire Nagaland. Somewhere along the years, money became a focal point for many and so state fund became personal largesse. The present government
will remain in power for at most ten to eleven months and during this period, the power that be has to bring some measure of remedy. Look at the roads in Nagaland as opposed to the palatial buildings that stand by the roadsides. It is so ironical that the public fund meant for development has benefitted only those who were or are in power. People are begging for their hard-earned salary from every nook and corner. The government has no money
to pay them. Our roads and amenities are pitiable and people are fed-up. Even if a new government is formed in the coming year, unless the elected representatives are of the same mind – which is to really sacrifice their own luxury and work for the people – things will never change. In other words, people need to vote for a genuine and humble politician rather than money and muzzle loaded ones. Christina K Sema

be air-dropped and has to emerge as a social outcome. Since the recent announcement itself is coming as a radical change, it is leading to utter confusion in Naga society. Therefore, there is a need to rethink and debate on this issue from the grass root level. The responsibility of scholars and thinkers is to play a role to articulate and help Naga people at large to understand the issues and factors. 7. Also, the state government need to take youth in higher confidence who have begun to show their desperation and hopelessness. The Youth today find themselves undermined and find no justice to their dreams and aspirations. It is high time that the state government initiate appropriate plans and policies to cater to the present and future needs of our valuable youth dividend. The overall scenario which has emerged after the violence seems to be promoting pessimism in the Naga society. The task is now to come out of this pessimism and move towards an optimist tackling of the situation. Dr.Zuchamo Yanthan, School of Social Sciences, IGNOU, New Delhi

For procuring aadhar card Sir,
There are many people who are yet to get Aadhar card made because they had missed out earlier. Some common people donot have any knowledge of how to go about it. It would be most appreciated if the concerned authority could give public information as to when it would be possible for getting the card done in Dimapur. Some say that aadhar card is not mandatory but it seems to be required even to get bank forms etc. This is not the case only in Dimapur but in other districts as well. The sea near the island is rich in marine life, leading to frequent clashes between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen as well as Navy. In a letter to Modi, Palaniswami urged him “to intervene personally in this sensitive livelihood issue of our fishermen and use all means at the command of the government of India to curb the unacceptable aggressive actions of the Sri Lankan Navy and to protect the life, limb and liberty of our innocent fishermen”. Palaniswami said the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India should be summoned and told about the strong feelings of the Indian and Tamil Nadu governments about the unprovoked firing on Indian fishermen. Ahmedabad, March 7 (IANS): “PM Go Back” posters came up outside the BJP headquarters on the outskirts of Gandhinagar on Tuesday, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Gujarat. Hours earlier, a group of youths from the Patel community late on Monday night claimed to have thrown eggs at the cavalcade of national BJP president Amit Shah. Two videos appeared on social media showing half a dozen youngsters threatening and then pelting eggs at Shah’s cavalcade on its way to the Somnath temple. “Amit Shah is going to Somnath by road and so we along with Patidar Anamat Adnolan Samiti (PAAS) convenor from Keshod will welcome him by (throwing) eggs at him. Jai Sardar,” youth showing eggs in their hands said in a video message that went viral on social media. In another video, youth are found camping on the highway and shouting slogans against Amit Shah, calling him “General Dyer” and throwing eggs at the cavalcade. Shah was on his way to the Somnath Temple ahead of Modi’s visit to the revered Hindu shrine. Shah and his wife offered prayers at the temple on Tuesday morning.

Chennai, March 7 (IANS): A 21-year-old fisherman from Tamil Nadu was shot dead in Sri Lankan waters igniting tensions in the state but Colombo insisted its Navy was not involved. Six fishermen from Thangachimadam in Ramanathapuram district were fishing near the Katchatheevu islet in the narrow sea dividing the two countries when they were fired at on Monday night, Indian officials said. One fisherman, K. Britjo, was killed. Another who was injured was warded in a hospital in Tamil Nadu. The others escaped without injuries. As India voiced “deep concern” after the incident, Colombo promised a thorough probe and later said that its naval personnel did not fire at the fishermen. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, however, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act to curb what he said was Colombo’s “aggres-

Lankan Navy for the killing. The dead man had set sail in a vessel with others from Rameshwaram on Monday. Sri Lankan Navy spokesperson Lt Commander Chaminda Walakuluge said in Colombo that the Navy personnel had been ordered not to fire at Indian fishermen but to only arrest them if they entered Sri Lankan waters. Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu took up the matter with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. T h e Ta m i l N a d u Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Britjo and Rs 1 lakh for the injured fisherman Saron. The attack comes a day after Palaniswami wrote to Modi seeking the release of 85 fishermen and their 128 boats now in Sri Lankan custody. The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said it was deeply concerned over the shooting. “Initial investigations indicate that the Sri Lanka Navy is not involved in this alleged incident,” the Ministry said. PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday condemned the killing and said New Delhi should stop terming Sri Lanka as a friendly nation. “They were first attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy with grenades and then were shot at,” he said in Chennai.
New Delhi, March 7 (IANS): The Congress on Tuesday alleged that the Narendra Modi government was indulging in “plain extortion” in the name of Digital India by levying various taxes and charges on digital transactions. “After forcing the devastating decision of demonetisation upon the people of India, the Narendra Modi government is brazenly indulging in organised loot and legalised plunder in the name of digital transactions,” Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said here. “In the name of digital transactions, last year the government earned Rs 6,750 crore through taxes/ charges from us. This year, this amount is expected to climb to Rs 26,000 crore,” he added. He said that there are five types of charges/taxes levied by the government, viz, Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) when one pays through cards, over the counter transaction charges, charges on ATM transactions after a fixed number of transactions in a month, charges for not maintaining a minimum balance and charges on online transactions. “We were told the cost of printing new currency notes would be around Rs 12,000-15,000 crore. To recover this cost, the government is now levying all kinds of charges and taxes. This is nothing but plain extortion in the name of Digital India,” he added.

Arun Jaitley had announced in the Union Budget that 20 lakh Aadhaar Pay Point of Sale (PoS) machines will be deployed by banks in the current financial year. ET had reported in February that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on December 30 that Aadhaar Pay would be launched soon and that it would revolutionise the payment ecosystem. Aadhaar Pay will be introduced in the country first with five banks, including Syndicate Bank, IndusInd Bank, and IDFC Bank. Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank are also in the process of launching it at the earliest. “It’s a new paradigm, a quantum leap for banks. They are yet to harness the full potential of even credit and debit cards, so some initial issues are bound to come up while moving to a new system,” said another government official, explaining the delay behind the launch of Aadhaar Pay. “The government therefore is trying to handhold the banks on technical issues, and is also looking at whether banks can be subsidized by the government along with some rationalization of charges,” added the official.

tariat will soon decide on the proposal. “The committee of secretaries had said that if they (banks) don’t have incentives, they may not go and acquire merchants, so let them have incentives, and merchant will not bear cost and it may be borne from the financial inclusion fund,” the official told ET. After the impending launch of Aadhaar Pay by banks, including the State Bank of India, the government is also considering a merchant version of the BHIM app that is currently functional for only person to person transactions. A senior finance ministry official said that although there is no loss of merchant discount rate (MDR) for banks on settlement through BHIM or Aadhaar Pay as they are network agnostic, the plan is intended to promote payments through these. “The idea is that merchants should move on to these modules and customers should have a choice,” he added. The amount to support this may come from the budgetary allocation of Rs 3,000 crore to promote financial inclusion activities. Finance Minister

(Form p-1) Principal secretary said Rs. 5326.42 received during 2016 was non-recurring grant for the last five years, which he said cannot be used for payment of salaries. With regard to Hindi teachers, Solo said the state government appointed 1379 Hindi teachers under CSS called Appointment of Language Teachers’ during the 12th Five Year Plan ( 2012-17 ), which is 100% funded by the Centre. According to Solo, the department for the current year 2016-17 submitted a proposal of Rs. 4889.06 lakh as salary requirement to the Centre. However, he said only Rs. 600 lakh was released in September 2016. The monthly salary requirement being Rs. 394.00 lakh, Solo said the state government had however released salary of Hindi teachers for three months, saying the amount released by the Centre was not even sufficient to meet two months’ salary. He said delay in release of fund for Hindi teachers was due to non placement of fund by the Ministry of Finance to the MHRD. Non release and delay in release of fund by the Centre has affected all the four states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Orissa and Punjab which were implementing this CSS programme. According to Solo, the Mizoram government has not paid the Hindi teachers for 10 months. The principal secretary, however, said that the matter for early release and continuation of the scheme (which is ending on March 31, 2017) beyond the 12th Five Year Plan has been taken up with the Centre at the Chief Ministers’ level.
N EW D ELHI , M a r 7 (Agencies): India may give banks an incentive of up to Rs 10 for each transaction to encourage merchants to adopt digital modes of payment, helping achieve the objective of a less-cash economy that makes tax evasion easier to detect. According to a government official, the proposal is to provide an incentive of 0.25% on the value of a transaction – capped at Rs 10 – made on the biometric-based payment system Aadhaar Pay and UPI platform BHIM. The incentive is also aimed at encouraging banks to onboard merchants for the new payments ecosystem and build the requisite infrastructure. The move would also help recoup potential loss of revenue to lenders when buyers use Aadhaar Pay or BHIM instead of debit or credit. Funds will be made available from the India Inclusion Fund of Nabard and the corpus could be as high as Rs 1000 crore, according to an official. Deliberations are now on, involving the ministry of electronics and IT and the department of financial services. The Cabinet Secre-

In December last year, Paytm founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma had sold 1 percent of his holding in One97 Communications, the parent firm of the digital payments firm, to raise about Rs 325 crore. Korean Central News Agency said Tuesday that Pyongyang was banning Malaysians from leaving the country “until the safety of the diplomats and citizens of (North Korea) in Malaysia is fully guaranteed through the fair settlement of the case that occurred in Malaysia.” Malaysia is looking for seven North Korean suspects. Three of them, including an official at the North Korean Embassy, are believed to still be in Malaysia. Khalid Abu Bakar, Malaysia’s national police chief, said the three are probably holed up inside the embassy. “We will not raid the embassy,” Khalid said. “... We will wait. ISLAMABAD, MAR 7 (IANS): Pakistan on Tuesday temporarily reopened two border crossings with Afghanistan which were closed in February after a spate of terror attacks in the country. The opening of the Torkham and Chaman border crossing points on March 7 and 8 is being seen as a move to ease tension between the two neighbours and relieve some of the backlog of people and vehicles at the border, Dawn online reported. According to the Pakistan Foreign Ministry, Afghans and Pakistanis with valid travel documents will be allowed to cross the border points for two days.

The UN announced last month that Somalia was slipping into famine six years after a deadly one which claimed more than 250,000 lives. BEIJING, MAR 7 (AGENCIES): China on Tuesday called for an immediate Cease-Fire (CF) between ethnic rebels and Myanmar security forces in a restive border area, urging the two sides to resolve their differences through peaceful means instead. China is giving humanitarian help to people from Myanmar who have fled fighting that has killed about 30 people and dealt a blow to Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s goal of reaching peace with minorities. “The situation in northern Myanmar relates to the peace and tranquillity of the China-Myanmar border,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing. “The relevant parties should have an immediate ceasefire to prevent the clashes from escalating and return normal order to the border as soon as possible.” He added, “Since the clashes began, some Myanmar border residents have entered into China on safety considerations.” China is providing assistance on humanitarian grounds, Geng said, adding that he had no information about any Chinese casualties. He urged both sides to adopt peaceful means in resolving their differences through dialogue and consultation. Suu Kyi’s nearly oneyear-old government is increasingly besieged by ethnic rebels, grappling with an alliance of militias in the north and a new Rohingya insurgency rebelling against decades of persecution in the country’s northwest.

for a deep Sofiane Feghouli cross to the far post. But Conte had obviously done his homework, with N’Golo Kante given the task of cutting off Carroll’s supply line at source by stopping the West Ham midfield from feeding the ball out wide. And it was one such Kante interception that started the move that lead to Chelsea’s opener on 25 minutes, with the France international cutting out a Robert Snodgrass pass before moving the ball on for Hazard, who rounded Darren Randolph for his 14th goal this season. Chelsea could have doubled the score just before half-time, but Hazard was sloppy with his pass across the area towards Costa, and Randolph was able to recover to make a fine block from Pedro’s follow-up shot from Moses’ initial effort.
But Costa made it 2-0 on 50 minutes with his first shot of the night on target, cleverly diverting Cesc Fabregas’ corner, deflected via the head of Pedro Obiang, beyond Randolph with his right kneecap for his 17th goal of the Premier League season. Randolph then made a brilliant stop to deny Costa goal number 18 on 67 minutes, the Ireland goalkeeper keeping out the Chelsea striker’s turn and shot from 10 yards out with a strong hand. With the points long in the bag, Chelsea suffered a rare lapse in an otherwise outstanding night deep into injury-time, as London derby specialist Lanzini took advantage of a Cesar Azpilicueta mistake to net his eighth goal in 12 capital encounters with a drilled finish from Andre Ayew’s pass.

Gareth Bale
M a d r i d, M a r 7 (Agencies): Gareth Bale believes Premier League clubs will continue to struggle in the Champions League until a winter break is introduced in England. The Premier League remains the only major European league that does not have a mid-season break and the lack of a rest period has been blamed for English clubs struggling in the latter
stages of the Champions and Europa Leagues. “Every game in the Premier League you have to be at 100 per cent for 90 minutes or you will lose,” Bale explained. “In Spain, you can be up at half-time against the bottom club and take your foot off the gas. You can rest players and take people off. Obviously the winter break is massive. In England you’ll play four or five games and we don’t play any. You don’t get many rest days and it really does burn you out for a long time after that. It’s nice to really get away from it, mentally as well as physically.” “Spanish teams definitely know they have this edge over the English. Every country does: Spain, Italy, Germany, they all have the winter break.”

Defending a competitive target of 188 with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on line, Ashwin was unplayable on a tricky on a fourth-day surface with magnificent figures of 6 for 41. Australia ended up decimated for 112 in only 35.4 overs. Just like Indian wickets fell like nine pins in Pune, Australia too crumbled like a house of cards and lost the last six for a mere 11 runs between overs 26th and 36th. Wi t h t h e i r b a c k s firmly against the wall, it was a battle of attrition for Kohli and his boys after their humiliating loss in Pune. It turned out to be a collective effort in the end with KL Rahul (90 and
51), Cheteshwar Pujara (92) and Ajinkya Rahane (52) doing their bit with the bat. Not to forget an invaluable 20 runs from Wriddhiman Saha. After a bad run in Pune, spin twins Ashwin (8 wickets) and Ravindra Jadeja (7 wickets) accounted for 15 out of the 20 wickets. The pitch, which deteriorated with each passing moment, made the target of 188 look as big as 350. Only skipper Steve Smith (28) and Peter Handscomb (24) were the only batsmen to cross 20run mark for Australia. Till the 10th over of the chase, things looked good for Australia as they were 42 for 1, losing only Matt Renshaw (5) who got an unplayable delivery from Ishant Sharma. David Warner (17) got a leg before decision off Ashwin’s bowling going against him. Warner reviewed it unsuccessfully. Umesh Yadav (2/30 in 9 overs) then produced the double break with Shaun
Marsh (9) getting one to come back after hitting one of those ever widening cracks. Smith got a shooter that didn’t even rise enough hitting him on the boot. It was plumb and Smith, trying to get a clue from the dressing room beyond his 15-second time, got into a brief altercation with rival captain Kohli. Mitchell Marsh (13) and Peter Handscomb (24) added 27 runs and tried to stem the rot during their fifth wicket partnership. This was the time when Ashwin, coming for his second spell, ran riot dismissing Marsh, Matthew Wade and Mitchell Starc in quick succession. Once it was 103 for 7, the game was all over for Australia. The third Test will be played in Ranchi from March 16. Brief scores: India 189 & 274 (Cheteshwar Pujara 92, Ajinkya Rahane 52; Josh Hazlewood 6-67) beat Australia 276 & 112 (Steve Smith 28; R Ashwin 6-41) by 75 runs.
