NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (NPN): India is now on high alert as concerns over the spread of the virus mounted after three more persons tested positive of coronavirus (COVID-19), taking the total number of confirmed infections in the country to six. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday held an extensive review on the preparedness and also urged the people not to panic and instead take basic protective measures. “There is no need to panic. We need to work together, take small yet important measures to ensure self-protection,” PM Modi tweeted and released a 24×7 helpline number (+91 1123978046) and email id (ncov2019@gmail.com) to report any suspected cases and to seek further help. The Civil Aviation Ministry too conducted a meeting with all airports to review and update guidelines. Officials said the sample of an Italian tourist in Jaipur which was sent to National Institute of Virology, Pune was found to be positive after the first two tests gave contradictory results. Night curfew continues in Shillong Correspondent SHILLONG, MAR 3: Despite no report of any fresh violence, night curfew continued in Meghalaya’s state capital-- Shillong on Tuesday for the fifth successive night, even as the State’s home minister Lahkmen Rymbui appealed for peace. “Night curfew will continue as there is apprehension of serious breach of law and order in Shillong and adjoining areas,” East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner (DC) Matsiewdor War Nongbri confirmed. The night curfew came into effect from 9 p.m. and would continue till 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Nongbri, however, said curfew would continue in Iewduh, Motphran, Police Bazaar and Iew Mawlong until further orders. “The situation is totally under control but we are keeping a close watch and all precautionary steps have been taken to prevent any untoward incident,” she claimed. Mobile internet service too continued to remain suspended for the next 24 hours in the four districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi.

Assam takes up encroachment issue To move Centre for setting up Commission G U WA H AT I , M A R 3 (AGENCIES): Assam government has informed the Assembly that it will take up with the Centre the issue of encroachment of Assam land by the neighbouring states including Nagaland. According to the state government, 83918.7199 hectares of Assam lands have been under encroachment of the neighbouring states that share borders with Assam. “We’re going to take up the inter-State boundary disputes with the Centre to solve them. With many of the neighbouring States being ruled by the BJP or its allies, the issue will also be taken up politically,” State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said, while reply-

ing to a query from AGP MLA Pabindra Deka. Patowary further said, “We’ve boundary-related cases with a few neighbouring States in the Supreme Court. Now we’re going to approach the Centre for the formation of a Commission to settle the inter-State boundary disputes forever. If the disputes are resolved mutually, it’s better.” According to data tabled Patowary in the Assembly, it showed that the highest amount of land had been encroached by Nagaland (59,490 hectares) followed by Arunachal Pradesh (21,343 hectares), Mizoram (1536 hectares), Meghalaya (1524 hectares) and Tripura (25 hectares). The three districts where the largest amount of encroachment has been taken place are Golaghat (36,294 hectares by Nagaland), Jorhat (18,908 hectares by Nagaland) and Tinsukia (9,269 hectares by Arunachal Pradesh).

Patowary said the government has filed two cases with the Supreme Court to free land encroached by Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. “Both the cases (number 2/1988 and 1/1989) are subjudice,” he said. Patowary said so far the state government has freed 22 hectares of encroached forest land from Arunachal in Lakhimpur district and 1,175 hectares from Nagaland in Karbi Anglong district through eviction drives. When asked whether OHCHR can approach the Supreme Court, an official familiar with the matter said it was for the apex court to decide. India witnessed massive protests in the last two months over the new law with the opposition parties and rights groups terming it as violative of founding principles of Indian Constitution. Rejecting the criticism, the government has been accusing the opposition parties of misleading people on the law for political gains. Shadows over Shillong

I

n the minds of many people, Shillong the capital of erstwhile Assam and later Meghalaya, has always been remembered with fondness for its natural beauty and a friendly and hospitable people. Those were the days when Shillong was the main educational hub of the entire north east and also the most preferred summer retreat. Indeed, it may be said that there are few in the region who have not been touched by the charms of Shillong of the yesteryears. After the mid-80s, Shillong unfortunately changed due to various factors and gradually lost its charm as ‘Scotland of the East.’ A peaceful and tourist-friendly environment was under siege by a growing divide between communities when parochial politics made it seem like Shillong was not going to remain as the paradise of the north east any more. Upsurge in local versus non-local politics has brought contemporary society in Meghalaya to disharmony and conflicts within the multi-heterogeneous and multi-cultural society. Shillong and not Meghalaya, reflects a wider composition of a civilised cosmopolitan citizenry of those who belong to various ethnic and religious backgrounds. There are non-tribal communities like Bengali Hindus whose forefathers are believed to have migrated from Bangladesh, Nepalis and Sikhs besides other communities. The migration of non-tribal workers from other parts of India, besides Bangladesh and Nepal, over the decades has caused unease and insecurity among local residents.After a two-month lull since violence broke out over ILP, Shillong was rocked, not by rock music but clashes between communities and police again. Three persons were killed last week in clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups. The recent violence in Shillong which was triggered by the controversial and divisive Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has also reopened old wounds and a reminder to all denizens of Shillong that the good old days are over. The Khasi Students Union(KSU) has been demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP)under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) Act 1873 for the state to keep CAA out of the purview of the state. The Northeast has been opposing the law for an entirely different reason- the vulnerability of ethnic communities in view of the influx of outsiders. Last year in December, the Meghalaya assembly passed a resolution asking the Centre to introduce ILP in the state so as to keep it out of the purview of CAA but there has been no response. The KSU activists clashed with some Bengali migrants at a village bordering Bangladesh in which one KSU member died. The battle then shifted to Shillong where clashes took place between locals and nonlocals and the deaths of two more. It may be recalled that there were riots between indigenous tribal groups and migrants in 1979, 1987 and 1992. Ethnic tensions among the tribes themselves have made the situation rather complicated. Young Khasis today are unhappy that business has been totally dominated by outsiders and even jobs are being cornered by them. The outsiders or non-locals are not necessarily recent arrivals as a good number are domiciled citizens of the state. The non-locals seem determined to fight for their constitutional rights and here is where the issue becomes complicated. However, there are no easy or quick solutions to the problems which have been compounded over several decades and the CAA has only added to the problem.

Personal perspective on CAA/NRC

don’t Oppose CAA because it ignores some religious minorities, it doesn’t matter what is left behind and what is taken on board because to the fact that people don’t want any illegal immigrants anymore in our land. At this darkening transition period of time, their coming is not going to help our land to flourish in any form but would added more povertness and fire up the level of complexities in our society. I don’t want them none, not even the people from my faith as christians. If they want to leave their own country because of the issues of human rights or because of the persecution of their faith in what they believe, it is their personal battle. They have to fight for the justice and equality of human rights from their own governmen. If they are going through persecution, I would pray to God for their safety, would pray to God for comforting them. They are being persecuted not for beleiving in me or anybody but for their beliefs in the faith upon Jesus Christ our lord and pray that salvation be theirs. May they inherit the blessings of heaven. God is their refugee, our protector, our hope. Or a hindu being persecuted for their faith in what they believe, may the God they believe have mercy on them too or be of any other faiths. That is the realm of faith and my moral and spiritual support would be with them and with anybody against injustice but aside that I cannot gave a little last piece of bread to strangers when my own bloods look at me with a starved stomach dying before me and I goes on to feed the some strangers unknown. We are already suffering and we cannot bring more strangers when we could not even

able to provide and feed our own, how could we possibly think of feeding someone else and therefore I oppose CAA, I don’t want any illegal immigrants of any kind black or white, red or yellow. If anyone wish to be in India, let them come through fulfilling required legality. They fullfill the required criteria no issues but to bring illegal immigrants illegally for the voting bank of fulfilling the fanatical dreams of radical religiosity of hatred is unacceptable and unconstitutional we should never support at all cost. Modi is the Prime minister of India, he had to worry for the citizens of India, not for Pakistan, not for Bangladesh, not for Afghanistan. To give a better future to the citizens of India should be the utmost priority for Him and his government. Does Imran Khan, Sheikh Hasina keep worrying for the citizens of India ? No. D o Tr u m p, P u t i n , Merkel, Boris keep talking for the welfare of the citizens of India and goes on killing their own citizens so as to give better future to the citizens of other countries ? More than 25 lakhs people die every year because of Hunger. More than 365 millions are poor in india. Still people are earning a less than 32 rupee a day or no earning at all. The global hunger index of India stand at 129 even below Bangladesh and Pakistan. the GDP growth rate of this country is far better ahead than India progressing even beyond 7 % but India declining even below 5% and they want to bring more people into the already miserable state of life worrying about the world infact they are not worrying about the people, it just a jhumla. Their black policies coated with word of humanitarian just to fool the world but how can one humantarian work be carried out by killing the another humans. The reason they offer is on humanitarian grounds to persecuted humans but first stop persecuting the

own citizens, stop being inhumanitarian to the citizens of the country. Factually they would not even be able to look well those immigrants, those immigrants would live a life equal to animals in India worst than their present state of life. The government is so ashamed of poverty before the guest that it built up the wall to hide poverty instead of building the house and uplifting the poor. Prelude to Mlei-ngyi festival No work no pay - no other way acceptable C T he Jalukie Pumling Nko (JPN) brings g reetings and announce the advent of Mleingyi festival, which is one of the most important festivals of the Zeliang people, usually celebrated in the month “Mdui” (March 9 onwards), marks the self purification and the advent of a new farming season seeking God’s blessings for health and productive farming year. The festival is a weeklong event involving a sequential day-by-day activities like traditional fire-making, merry-making and traditional games and sports. The village high priest/ harbinger conveying all good wishes to his community and proclaims the arrival of festive season to enable for preparation of self, food, drinks and dresses etc. All preparatory agricultural activities such as jungle clearing for current jhum field and millet harvesting cultivated in fallow jhum areas are completed well ahead of the commencement of the event. On the onset of the festival all men folks take bath early in the morning from the ceremonious spring-well signifying self cleansing and purification. Ahead of the festival involves traditional seed treatment so that seeds sown after the festival are vigorous and healthy. Preparation of local rice brew for consumption during the entire festivity period is done in advance before the beginning of the festival. The Traditional fire making marks the commencement of Mlei-ngyi festival and is usually performed by the clan headman (kizeu-pei) of each dormitory, by using strands of bamboo (mlei-ria) and bamboo fine fibres and keep the flame burning until culmination of the festival. During the entire festive period, the clan headman will abstain from having any indulgence with spouse. The slaughter of ani-

mals meant for food during the festival is done by person having pure lineage trace amongst the villagers. The occasion witnesses engaged couples being invited to their respective in-laws for dinner and blessing and this dinner invitation by village folks usually continues during the entire festive period. All male members usually with their cup of beer and meat preparations from home, while entering their dormitory typically make a howl as “Aoo… yieee… ketyei-kesak ngyi, kehing-kelia ngyi… aki, mlia pungla”…which means “festival of food and drinks, festival of prosperity and longevity”… Sequentially, early in the morning the matured male members from the two major clan viz. Heu and Hau, forays into the jungle to make wooden totem (Herie) for each clan. The plank is then brought to the village with each clan carrying their respective wooden totem and placed on a clean predestined location. Then all male members in traditional attires gather to howl around the totem thence proceed to play ground for traditional games and sports like hedau (kicking the plank), heram (high jump), tsugi (shot put), hesim (long leap), hejo (long jump), hepo (wrestling) etc… This event usually witness wide participation and stiff competition from capable youngsters and the event marks the best athletes of the village for the year. The sporting event culminates with a traditional howl (nro) by male members congregated around the field (hejo). Significantly, the next day the families shared festival food package (Hengyidom) to sisters’ marriage outside the village. The evening hours are occupied with male members visiting female dormitories and calling them out by name and having verbal exchanges. Consecutively, the preceding day the male

members of different clan collect firewood and pile up in a selected place for firewood filching in the evening by the women folk. At the fall of dusk female dormitory members, usually come singing soulful ballets visits male dormitories and perform traditional events like finger identification (Hebalia), tug-of-war (heriang-teu) and filching firewood (tsingpo-nsa). On the final day the clan headman douses the Mlei-mi (festival fire). Members of the female dormitories cook sticky rice (Tetim) and share it with male dormitories as well as each female member including young girls. The post festival events marks the male members engaging in agricultural practices of burning their jhum fields and in the process any wild animals and birds killed or captured are gifted to female dormitories. Female members collect meat from their homes and cook in dormitories. Discarded pieces of meat and bones (hailodum nsa) are collected by younger boys. Boys and girls together have recreation and merry making with would be brides and grooms by singing soulful ballets and conundrum. The bride-to-be along with friends from her dormitory selects a married man to lead during “nta” (traditional dances) and gives him mouthful of salt and wine. A day for facilitating and solemnizing traditional marriage ceremonies akin to Christian holy marriages and involves marriage feast for the entire village folks. GUWAHATI, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): The NRC authorities of Assam is mulling to start issuing the ‘Rejection Slip’ to over 19 lakh people excluded from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) from March 20. The Rejection Slip will mention the reasons for exclusion from the NRC. At present, work related to scanning of ‘speaking order’ is going on and around 12 per cent job is left. NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): A total of 185 students were detained by police on Tuesday while they were going to the Ramlila Maidan here to protest against the new citizenship law and the recent communal riots in northeast Delhi. According to police, the protesters were detained from different locations in the national capital and taken to several police stations. All detained students were later released, police said. “In total, 185 protesters were detained and taken to nearby police stations of Kamla Market, Hari Nagar and Bawana,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sanjay Bhatia said, adding that all the protesters have been released. Many students, however, claimed that several hundred of them were detained from different locations in the city. Speaking to IANS, Shekhawat said that it has just been four days since these 51 farmers are protesting via the ‘Bhoomi Samadhi Satyagraha’. This satyagraha of farmers is against the provisions of their land acquisition by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). The JDA started taking hold of their lands even without negotiating for the land due to which, once again, they had to stage the protest, he said. As part of the protest, the farmers dig pits in the ground and bury themselves till their necks. Shekhawat said around 5,000 families have been affected due to land acquisition according to the old laws.

New Delhi, March 3 (IANS): India on Tuesday summoned Iran’s envoy in the capital to register its protest against Iranian Foreign Minister’s scathing comments on the recent communal riots in Delhi over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The recently enacted law, CAA fast tracks citizenship of persecuted religious minorities of three Islamic theocratic countries neighbouring India --Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The CAA triggered widespread violent protests in India, with the opposition calling it discriminatory against Muslims. Last week during US President Donald Trump’s first state visit to India, several parts of Delhi, the epicentre of violent protests against the CAA, erupted in communal riots. Over 40 people of both Hindu and Muslim communities were killed along with some security officials too. T hir u v anan thapuram, Mar 3 (PTI): The Kerala government, which has already put on hold the National Population Register (NPR) activities in the state, on Tuesday said an all-party meeting would be held on March 16 to allay any confusion with regard to the census enumeration. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made the announcement in the state assembly after some members of the Congress-led UDF raised fears that along with census, queries regarding the NPR could also figure during the enumeration. The meeting will be held at 5 pm in the state capital. Earlier, the CPI(M)led Left Democratic Front government had assured the state assembly it would not implement the NPR but would go ahead with the census process. It had in December last ordered stoppage of all activities in connection with NPR in the state considering ‘apprehensions’ of the public that it would lead to the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) in the wake of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

SRINAGAR, MARCH 3 (IANS): Four days after the National Investigation Agency made a major breakthrough in the Pulwama terror attack case over a year after the bombing, arresting one person who provided shelter to the suicide bomber Adil Ahmad Dar, the NIA on Tuesday arrested two more people in the case, sources said. An NIA source related to the probe told IANS: “Two more persons have been arrested by the agency in the Pulwama terror attack case.” The source said that a father-daughter duo have been arrested from Lethpora area for their involvement in the attack. The fresh arrests of the two accused brings the total arrests in the case to three. The arrests were made on the revelations by Shakir Bashir Magrey, who was arrested by the anti-terror probe agency on February 28. The source, however, did not disclose on what charges they were arrested. The source further said that

Gandhina g ar , March 3 (IANS): Just like Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath enacted laws to make rioters pay for damage to public property, the Gujarat government too on Tuesday announced that rioters will be made to cough up money for damage to public property. “Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has instructed the administration to scrutinize the rioters’ property and make assessment so that the damage caused by them to the public property can be recovered,” Pradeepsinh Jadeja, the minister of state for home, said in the ongoing budget session of the Gujarat assembly. Jadeja was speaking in the House during the discussion on the recent Khambhat riots, under rule 116 of the Gujarat Assembly, raised by Congress MLAs Imran Khedawala, Gyasuddin Shaikh, Mohammed Peerzada and Mahesh Kumar Rawal. The Minister informed the House that there were a

total of 9 FIRs filed in the case and 115 persons were arrested. Cudgels, iron rods, daggers were recovered from the accused. During the violence, the rioters had damaged houses, shops, vehicles and also public property in Akbarpur, Madarnagar, Bhoi Bari, Lal Darvaza, Pirajpura, Bhavsar wad, Prajapati Vas, Tran Darvaja areas of Khambhat. During the riots, 41 members of the public and eight police officials were injured in stone pelting. Jadeja said that the Additional DG (law and order), IG (armed unit), Ahmedabad range IG, Superintendent of Police (SP), Kheda, Superintendent of Police (SP), Ahmedabad rural and SRP commandant as well as SMC were immediately rushed to the affected area, as soon as the news of the riots was received. The Director General of Police (DGP) also visited Khambhat. The Minister said that due to the prompt action by the district administration and the police, the accused were arrested. Standard procedures like area domination, arrest of anti-social elements, flag marches, static deployment, combing and constant patrolling by senior officials brought the situation under control.

The accused had extensively used internet and social networking sites to identify members for the Middle East based terror outfit, facilitate recruitment and training, and to promote its activities and ideology, the National Investigation Agency had said earlier. In total, 16 people were arrested in 2016 for allegedly recruiting and financing people to join the terror outfit. One of the accused, however, turned approver in the case. According to the sources, the accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Explosive Substances Act. Charges involve Section 120B (common inten-

NEW DELHI, MARCH 3 (IANS): Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asserted on Tuesday that the government is ready to debate on the Delhi violence on March 11, a day after Holi. Reasoning the choice of the date, Prasad told the media: “It should be our common effort to ensure amity, understanding and peace in Delhi. Peace has returned to Delhi today. India restricts drug exports

New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI): India, the world’s largest maker of generic drugs, on Tuesday restricted the export of common medicines such as paracetamol and 25 other pharmaceutical ingredients and drugs made from them, as it looks to prevent shortages amid concerns of the coronavirus outbreak turning into a pandemic. Besides over-the-counter painkiller and fever reducer paracetamol, drugs restricted for exports included common antibiotics metronidazole, and those used to treat bacterial and other infections as well as vitamin B1 and B12 ingredients. A notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said the export of 26 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and formulations would require licence. Though India is a source of about 20 per cent of the world’s generic drug supply, pharma companies in the country are dependent on China for two-thirds of the chemical components needed to make them. The outbreak of coronavirus has shut factories

in China and impacted supplies, leading to fears of a shortage of drugs and medicines. “Export of specified APIs and formulations made from these APIs is hereby restricted with immediate effect and till further orders,” the DGFT said in the notification. While three new cases of coronavirus were reported in India on Monday, “high viral load” was detected in six people who had been in contact with a coronavirus-infected patient. Since its outbreak in China, the deadly virus has killed more than 3,000 people globally. The government issued a travel advisory suspending all regular visas/e-visas granted on or before March 3 to nationals of Italy, Iran, South Korea, Japan who have not yet entered India. Earlier, there were no restrictions on outbound shipments of the 26 drugs. India’s API imports stand at around USD 3.5 billion per year, and around 70 per cent, or USD 2.5 billion, come from China. API is the raw material for pharmaceutical.

RBI steps in to calm financial markets M um b a i , M a r 3 (IANS): In a bid to calm the Indian financial markets the Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday said that it is ready to take “appropriate actions” to ensure the orderly functioning of financial markets. Central banks across the world -- most notably the Federal Reserve -- have indicated that they will take policy actions to counter the detrimental impact of the coronavirus outbreak on businesses and global trade. In a statement the RBI said: “The Reserve Bank of India is monitoring global and domestic developments closely and continuously and stands ready to take appropriate actions to ensure the orderly functioning of financial markets, maintain market confidence and preserve financial stability.” Globally, financial markets have been experiencing considerable volatility, with the spread of the coronavirus triggering risk-off sentiments and flights to safe haven. Spillovers to financial markets in India have largely been contained, RBI said. Earlier European Central Bank had said that it is ready to take etargeted’

action to address the economic impact of the outbreak while the US Federal Reserve last week said that it would use its tools and “act as appropriate to support the economy (sic.)”. Global central banks have stepped in to calm financial markets after the last trading week ending Friday proved to be one of the worst since the 2008 global financial crises. The US main index Dow Jones had fallen over 1,000 points a number of times while benchmark Sensex lost over 3,000 points in the last seven days. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the coronavirus outbreak has reached a “decisive point” and has “pandemic potential” as the toll in China increased to above 2,900. With the threat of COVID-19 looming large, the government has tightened the entry conditions for the nationals of Italy, Iran, South Korea and Japan with immediate effect. As per the revised travel advisory issued on Tuesday by the Union Health Ministry, new travellers from these countries will have to apply for new visas.

Restrictions on the exports are important as there would be an increase in demand for these products in the country. Apart from paracetamol, vitamin B1, B6 and B12, other APIs and formulations over which the export restrictions have been imposed include tinidazole, metronidazole, acyclovir, progesterone, chloramphenicol, ornidazole, formulations made of chloramphenicol, clindamycin salts, neomycin, and paracetamol. In February, the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) asked the DGFT to issue orders restricting the export of 12 APIs and formulations in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. A high-level committee formed by the DoP under the chemicals and fertilisers ministry to monitor the supply of raw materials for drugs from China had recommended the restrictions.

Pandey, currently the Revenue Secretary in the Union Finance Ministry, will replace incumbent Rajiv Kumar.A 1984 batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, he is known for his work with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and has also served as Chairman of Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN). Pandey had taken charge as the Revenue Secretary in November 2018, replacing Hasmukh Adhia who was to retire at the end of the month. A graduate of electrical engineering from IIT, Kanpur, Pandey, in 1998, went on to join the University of Minnesota where he obtained his MS and PhD degrees in computer science. In 2009, he was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals by the University of Minnesota for outstanding leadership accomplishments in his professional career.

Mumbai, Mar 3 (PTI): Falling for the third consecutive session, the rupee on Tuesday slumped 47 paise to 73.23 against the US dollar, as investor sentiment remained fragile amid concerns over the impact of coronavirus. Forex traders said the Indian rupee which started the day on a positive note witnessed heavy volatility during the session and finally settled below 73 per US dollar level. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 72.50. During the day it saw a high of 72.43 and a low of 73.34 against the American currency. The domestic unit finally settled at 73.23 against the greenback, down 47 paise over its previous closing price. This is the third consecutive session of fall for the domestic unit during which it has depreciated by 160 paise. “Rupee fell to the lowest level in a year following an increase in number of reported cases on coronavirus in India. Market participants will be keeping an eye on the expected synchronised move from Central banks,” said Gaurang Somaiyaa, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

New Delhi, Mar 3 (IANS): Global sales of smartphones to end users contracted in the fourth quarter of 2019, declining by 0.4 per cent (year over year), and for the full year 2019, smartphones sales declined by 1 per cent, Gartner said on Tuesday. Apple and Xiaomi were the only vendors in the top five to achieve growth in the fourth quarter of 2019. Even with a decline in sales, Samsung held on to the No. 1 position with 17.3 per cent market share. Apple secured the No. 2 position with 17.1 per cent of the market. “The year 2019 ended a little better than expected, due to slightly improved performances from North America and emerging Asia/Pacific,” said Anshul Gupta, senior research analyst at Gartner. “ H oweve r, I n d i a , which sold 151.9 million units, overtook the US to become the No. 2 country for smartphone sales in 2019. It also helped Apple regain the No. 2 position,” said Annette Zimmermann, research vice president at Gartner. Sales of iPhones were particularly strong in China, where they grew by 39 per cent in the fourth quarter. Apple also performed strongly in certain mature and developing markets, such as the UK, France, Germany, Brazil and India. Gartner expects Apple will launch its first 5G smartphone in the third quarter of 2020. This will encourage users to upgrade in countries where 5G network services are available. “While the COVID-19 outbreak will impact smartphone demand negatively in China in the first quarter of 2020, we do not expect a demand contraction in the international smartphone market during that period,” said Zimmermann.

New Delhi, Mar 3 (IANS): Banks in the next six months will be lending Rs 1.85 lakh crore to specified sectors and can save around Rs 7,400 crore if credit growth happens at 9 per cent for housing and 5 per cent for vehicle and MSME loans, Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser, State Bank of India said on Tuesday. “As per our estimation the banking industry in the next 6 months (till July 31,2020) will be lending Rs 1.85 lakh crore in specified sectors and can save around Rs 7,400 crore (assuming credit growth of 9 per cent for housing and 5 per cent for vehicle and MSME loans) as CRR benefits,” the SBI said in a paper. Capital charge on Rs 1.85 lakh crore would be around Rs 15,000 crore. This Rs 7,400 crore will have an impact on banks’ profitability and cost of deposits. We believe that banks’ profitability will increase by Rs 480 crore (@6.5 per cent G-sec yield). Cost of deposits may also be impacted by 2-3 bps. This is an excellent step and RBI if

California and Texas, the largest in terms of Democratic delegates and population, are among the states that will vote on Super Tuesday, reports Efe news. Although so far the states of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina have allocated a total of 155 delegates to various candidates in their primaries and caucuses, on Super Tuesday 1,357 delegates are in play, a third of all the Democratic primary delegates nationwide. California used to hold its primary in June, when virtually all its 415 delegates had already been allocated, but this year it has moved its primary up by several months, thus transforming itself from a largely “irrelevant” state into a “crucial” one in determining who will be the political parties’ presidential nominees. Beijing, Mar 3 (IANS): The death toll due to the coronavirus outbreak in China increased to 2,943, health officials said on Tuesday, adding that a further decline in new cases suggested the epidemic was stabilising on the mainland since authorities began publishing nationwide data in January. The National Health Commission said there were 125 new cases reported on Tuesday which was down from 202 recorded a day earlier and also the lowest number since January, the South China Morning Post reported. China began releasing data for Wuhan, provincial capital of Hubei and the epicentre of the outbreak, in early January, where officials said cases rose from 41 on January 10 to 198 on January 19. National data was first published on January 20, when 291 people across the country were recorded as infected. The Commission also said that there were also 31 new fatalities on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 2,943. With 114 of the latest cases occurring in Hubei, where the disease first emerged, there was also a jump in new infections outside the province to 11, up from six on Monday. A total of 47,204 patients have now recovered, it added. While China reported less cases, South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday declared the nation

The 1964 Tokyo Olympics were held in October. But the games have now shifted to summer, largely because it’s the only time slot open for sports broadcasters. North America in the fall is filled with the NFL, college football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Europe is jammed with soccer in England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy, not to mention rugby and cricket where those sports are popular. Former IOC vice president Dick Pound told The Associated Press in an in-

terview last week that a decision about the Olympics probably has to be made in the next several months. Kevan Gosper, another former IOC vice president and now an honorary IOC member, also said cancellation was feasible. The Olympics have been canceled only three times, all during wartime. Tokyo organizers on Tuesday were forced to call off a Paralympic wheelchair rugby test event following suggestions from Prime Minister Shizo Abe to hold down large crowd events for several weeks. Tokyo organizers have 17 test events remaining on their schedule. The last one is to end on May 8. Most are small events featuring only local athletes. The most significant is a gymnastics test on April 4-6 that is expected to have non-Japanese athletes competing. Seiko Hashimoto’s response to a question in the upper house of parliament implies the Olympics could be held later in the year and would not have to start on July 24 as planned. The Paralympics open on August 25. The Tokyo Olympics are being threatened by a fast-spreading virus that has been blamed for 12 deaths in Japan and has shut down most schools, sports competitions and Olympic-related events in the country. The virus that started in China has been detected in at least 70 countries, with 90,000 cases and 3,100 deaths reported. “The IOC has the right to cancel the games only if they are not held during 2020,” Hashimoto told parliament. “This can be interpreted to mean the games can be postponed as long as they are held during the calendar year.” IOC President Thomas Bach and Tokyo organizers have repeatedly said they expect the Olympics to open on schedule. Mikel Arteta’s side desperately needed a morale-boosting success after Olympiakos snatched a late winner to knock it out of the Europa League at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday. Arteta said his players were still feeling “very down” several days after that kick in the teeth, but they survived an early barrage from third-tier Portsmouth to avoid more misery in the FA Cup fifth round.
