IMPHAL, MAR 3: With two-phase elections in place, Manipur is all set to hold the first phase of the Assembly elections on Saturday amidst tight security arrangements. The polling is scheduled to from 7 a.m. The first phase will cover 38 constituencies for which 1,643 polling stations have been set up in areas spread over Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur and the hill districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. In a pre-poll related vi-

olence, four vehicles of two candidates were torched by miscreants in Senapati on Friday, while Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) has owned responsibility for the explosion at the residence of NPF candidate K Leishiyo at Langol in Imphal West on March 2. According to reports, two tata sumos, one bolero and an alto car, belonging to two candidates were hijacked by armed miscreants on March 1 and torched at a place near Purul village of Karong A/C of Senapati district on Friday. Bolero and one tata

sumo belonged to BJP candidate R Yuh Joanthan Tao from Karong A/C while other two belonged to LJP candidate TK Savanai. In another incident, a hand grenade was found at the courtyard of NPP candidate Vevek Raj Wangkhem, who is contesting from Kshtrigao A/C in Imphal East on Friday morning, around 8.30 am. Condemning the threat meted to candidates by planting explosives in their residences, locals of the area staged a sit-in-protest outside Wangkhem’s residence. Meanwhile, MNPF

has claimed responsibility for the blast at the residence of NPF candidate K Leishiyo, in which eight persons were injured including a woman. In a statement, MNPF assistant publicity secretary Thomas Numai accused Leishiyo of being hand in glove with NSCN (I-M). It also accused Leishiyo of “cheating, harassing and threatening people” during the election campaign in Pungyar assembly constituency, from where he is contesting. “NPF is not the enemy of the MNPF but because of Indian election,

NPF hand in glove with the NSCN (IM) in using force to the Naga people and indulging in creating fear psychosis and violating the rights of the Nagas in Manipur”, the statement stated. Earlier, according to MNPF, it had on February 21, 2017 warned NPF and other political parties and candidates in the fray in Naga areas not to take help of underground elements and desist from “any kind of terror acts” during their election campaigns. However, the outfit claimed that Leishiyo failed to heed on the advice.

DIMAPUR, MAR 3 (NPN): After more than three hours of deliberations at the Tourist Lodge here Friday, Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) and Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) which had spearheaded the movement against imposition of civic polls conducted without consultations with apex tribe bodies for 33% women reservation , have resolved to pursue unfulfilled demands by the government. Talking to Nagaland Post JCC convenor Supu Jamir said the house resolved to serve a 7-day ultimatum on government for immediate suspension of former Police Commissioner Dimapur, police officers at Longleng and all personnel involved in the January 31 incident. The ultimatum would take effect from the date of submission with the government by next week. The two bodies warned that failure to accede to the demands would invite stern

action. The joint meeting also resolved to approach the state government to revoke the November 24, 2016 resolution of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly pertaining to the Nagaland Municipal Act. The house also re-affirmed to stick to its February 7, 2017 resolution no.3, which demanded Amendment of the Nagaland Municipal Act. The resolution was adopted during the meeting of all tribal bodies along with NTAC and JCC at APO Hall Kohima. In this regard, the house reendorsed NTAC and JCC to pursue the matter. Further Supu said Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) and Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC) along with all the apex tribal bodies resolved to launch a new “platform for the Nagas of Nagaland”. According to Supu Jamir, the resolution for formation of an all-state apex tribal organisation was unanimously adopted “in principle” by the house.

He said the apex tribal bodies of Nagaland have been entrusted to pursue the formation of the new platform. It was however clarified that the proposed state apex tribal body was not for any particular agenda but broadly to protect the Nagas and their rights from “various hidden agendas”. The sole objective of the proposed platform will be to unify all Naga tribes of Nagaland under one umbrella. Fur ther, the house resolved to approach the Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) to withdraw the Special Leave Petition filed in the Supreme Court by some of its members under the banner of JACWR. In this regard, the apex tribal hohos have decided to initiate necessary steps. Interestingly, the NTAC-JCC appear to have accepted as fait accompli, the mere swap for the chief minister’s chair as against the February 1, 2017 resolution in Kohima.

NPF flays blast at Leishiyo’s house T.R. Zeliang responsible for his own downfall: NPCC DIMAPUR, MAR 3 (NPN): NPF Central has vehemently condemned the bomb blast in Imphal near the residence of its candidate for Phungyar Assembly Constituency in Manipur, K Leishiyo on March 2 evening, where eight persons sustained injuries. NPF media and press bureau asserted that such mindless act of terror was most detestable and should

be condemned by all. The party appealed to all sections of the society to ensure free and peaceful polling and campaigning in the true spirit of matured democracy and not to indulge in any act of violence which would only alienate the people further from each other. Further, NPF said that expressions of differences in opinions and views on pub-

lic platforms are accepted norms of democracy, but resorting to violent activities to convey one’s point of view was most unbecoming in a progressive society. NPF also prayed for speedy recovery of all those injured, and urged the responsible authorities to investigate thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to book without delay.

DIMAPUR, MAR 3 (NPN): Stepping up its attack on the advisor finance and former chief minister, TR Zeliang, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Friday stated that Zeliang himself was responsible for his own downfall. In an apparent reference to Zeliang’s speech at an election rally in Tamenglong, the NPCC through its media cell said that Zeliang explaining his position to the people of Ma-

The department also said that benami property “may be attached and confiscated by the government” and these actions are in “addition to actions under other laws such as Income Act, 1961”. The Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016, designed to curb black money was passed by Parliament in August last year. The benami property refers to property purchased by a person in the name of some other person. nipur would not absolve him in the eyes of the people of Nagaland. The congress alleged that the entire ULB election fiasco and the lawlessness that followed were because of the indecisiveness and mismanagement on the part of TR Zeliang and the NPF. It said Zeliang and NPF did not even hesitate to betray the institution of NBCC for their narrow political gains. Despite writing on the wall, the

NPCC said Zeliang stood defiantly prolonging the plight of the people “until some sanity prevailed among the spineless NPF legislators to abandon him.” NPCC also lambasted Zeliang and minister for education, Yitachu, saying both of them have got their facts wrong while comparing Manipur situation on use of central forces. It asserted that the entire central BJP leadership including Union

Home Minister Rajnath Singh have been relentlessly accusing Manipur chief minister, Ibobi Singh, of not using sufficient central security forces to stabilize the situation. On Thursday, the NPF central while defending Zeliang said he had only revealed the fact how Ibobi Singh has been clinging to power by using Central and State security forces available at his disposal. Introspect over recent events: NCPF to Nagas

In a press release, NCPF president, Dr.Watijungshi, and general secretary, Dr. Arenla Aier, acknowledged the “painful upheavals” that Naga society witnessed during the last few months and said that “we feel we owe this to who have sacrificed their all.” The forum said the strands that connected the upheavals were many, adding that unless people recognised, acknowledged and deal with each interconnected strand, the pain and the sacrifices of the recent past could just fade away without lasting impact. “Can we as a people afford to do that? Can we afford to go back to our same old routine and habits of our daily lives as if nothing has happened?” the NCPF queried. It stated that the students that “we try to mould today”, needed to be moulded and guided in the right

direction with a sense of duty and values. In this regard, the forum stressed the need for the society, church, the government, the civil society and each individual to introspect. NCPF also called upon the academia to think critically and express their thoughts fearlessly, adding that “our society needs direction.” It maintained that their teaching and research in humanities and science must be made applicable and relevant. Peace Accord should Meghalaya govt creating positive Naga not affect Assam: Gogoi impact on people’s lives: Purohit

Correspondent

Shillong, Mar 3: Meghalaya Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday said the ruling Congressled government in the state has taken several initiatives to provide base for accelerating action under the sustainable development framework. “Various developmental interventions embarked upon by my government, in the last few years, are creating a positive impact on the lives of people across the state,” he said addressing the Assembly at the beginning of budget session. “A holistic approach of my government to ensure growth which is inclusive and sustainable has set a new momentum of economic activities and development.” Purohit said a special focus is being given to address the challenges of both infrastructural gaps and disparities in the social sector. In order to enhance the

employability of Meghalaya’s youth, the governor said, a Rs 775 crore project namely “Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya” for improving the education scenario by upgrading 117 government-aided schools to national standards besides improving infrastructure of the eight existing Industrial Training Institutes. “The institutional tie-up to improve service delivery in ITI’s will be completed by March 2017. National skill qualification framework compliant curricula for all government ITI’s will be taken up during 2017-18,” he informed. Moreover, he said a state-of-the art model career centre at Shillong for career guidance and counselling for the youth and two new ITI’s at the Ampati and Mawkyrwat will be made operational during 2017-18. On Information and Technology, Purohit said the Cabinet had accorded

approval for providing ree Right of Way to the National Optical Fibre Network project of the central government to ensure last mile connectivity. To s t r e n g t h e n Shillong’s reputation as the “Education Hub”, he said the government has considered the establishment of degree engineering college in Shillong and college of architecture and urban planning in Tura. In a bid to harness solar energy, Purohit said the government is examining proposals to install gridconnected rooftops solar power plants in private and government buildings. The governor also informed that the 40 megawatts New Umtru Hydro Electric Project with 2 units of 20 megawatts each is set to be commissioned within 2017-18 with the first unit expected to go for trial run this month. He also informed that the government has taken a number of measures to strengthen the internal se-

curity apparatus to create a safe and secure environment for the overall growth in the state. “Police personnel have been augmented and posted in the interior areas of the state to instill confidence among the local people and to check the movements and activities of militant groups,” Purohit said. Noting that a strategy of sustained operations coupled with active support of the general public has been adopted to contain the militancy problem, the Governor said the most significant event in 2016 was the surrender of 117 militants and insurgent outfits, besides the disbanding of one insurgent outfit in Tura. “My government has created an enabling environment to create conducive atmosphere to facilitate the surrendering of militants and assimilate themselves into national mainstream which is yielding positive results,” Purohit added.

Tarun Gogoi Guwahati, Mar 3 (AGENCIES): Terming the BJP-led Assam government as “courage-less”, former chief minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi demanded assurance from the Centre that the Naga Peace Accord would not affect the state of Assam. “The Naga Peace Accord has been kept under the wrap for so long. Why not make it public?” he questioned the Central government, which had signed the “Framework Agreement” with the NSCN (I-M) on August 3, 2015. Talking to media persons at Assam Assembly complex, Gogoi asserted that the agreement should only be confined to Consti-

tutional boundary of Nagaland and asked the Assam government get an assurance from Modi government in this regard. Talking about the law and order situation of Assam, Gogoi alleged it has deteriorated since the BJPled coalition came to power in the state. “When Sarbananda Sonowal became Chief Minister, he announced he would take minimum security and remain a common man. Now he has taken Z Plus security. Why? What does this mean?” the veteran Congress leader quizzed. Gogoi also alleged that the BJP government working for big capitalists and privatisation at the expense of the poor people. He also lashed out at Sonowal on the oil issue. “Has the Sarbananda Sonowal government informed the Centre that there has been widespread resentment against privatisation of oilfields? Have they told that it will go against the interest of the people? They simply do not have courage,” Gogoi said.

SC declines urgent hearing on PIL for probe into Pul’s death

New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI): The Supreme Court today refused to grant an urgent hearing on fresh PIL seeking independent probe into the alleged suicide of former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul. “Sorry. Declined,” a bench comprising Cheif Justice J S Khehar and Justices D Y Chandrachud and S K Kaul said. Advocate M L Sharma, who filed a PIL in his personal capacity, had sought urgent listing of the plea saying “a criminal conspiracy” was on to defame the highest judiciary of the country. “There should be an independent probe into the alleged suicide note and the death of Pul,” he said. The plea also sought investigation into the role of some lawyers who were allegedly espousing the cause of Pul’s wife Dangwimsai Pul. On February 23, Pul’s wife had withdrawn her letter for CBI or NIA probe into the allegations levelled in her husband’s purported suicide note against some former and serving persons holding constitutional posts and politicians. Pul had committed suicide on August 9 last year. His body was found hanging in the official residence of the Chief Minister at Itanagar. After months of intense political developments, Pul had taken over the reins of Arunachal Pradesh on February 19, 2016 for a brief period but had to relinquish the job following a Supreme Court order in July.

in the discussion, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha said the fencing has been erected about 800- 1,500 metres inside the border, resulting in many Indian villages falling in ‘no man’s land’. “We demand that the fencing should be realigned and such a huge gap should not be there. We also request the Speaker to send a House Committee to visit the areas and submit a report on this,” he added. AIUDF member Aminul Islan requested the state government to look for possibility of providing security by Assam Police. Responding to the members’ suggestions, Patowary said: “The government is also equally concerned like you members. We will consider both the proposals of shifting the people and realignment of

Strong deterrent needed against anti-nationals: Prez

Pranab Mukherjee ing floods in Uttarakhand, Kashmir Valley and Tamil Nadu deserve a special mention and will always be remembered by the entire nation. “The relentless and selfless operations showcase the fortitude and determination of its gallant air warriors,” Mukherjee said. He was speaking after awarding the President’s ‘Standard’ to 125 Helicopter Squadron and ‘Colours’ to Mechanical Training Institute at the Tambaram air base, one of the oldest establishments of the Indian Air Force, near here. The awards of Standard and Colours are given to a unit for its meritorious service. The 125 Helicopter Squadron (Gladiators) since its formation in November 1983 has enhanced its op-

erational capability over the years and earned accolades for its valour and strike capabilities when deployed internally as well as abroad. When deployed under the United Nations flag in Sierra Leone, the Gladiators were instrumental in securing the release of 232 captured Indian Army personnel. In January 2016, the Squadron played a stellar role in confining the terrorists to a restricted area during the Pathankot terror attack, thereby reducing casualties, the President said. The Mechanical Training Institute at Air Force Station Tambaram is the oldest technical training institute of the force. Raised in 1935, the institute has undergone changes in locations as well as in nomenclature over the years and was rechristened as Mechanical Training Institute in 1980. The unit imparts fundamental technical training in aircraft maintenance and servicing to the young recruits in mechanical aviation trades. The tradesmen are the backbone of the maintenance arm of the IAF, ensur-

Soldier who narrated woes of ‘buddy’ system in Army found dead Mumbai, March 3 (Agencies): An Army jawan who featured in a viral video on the abuse of the ‘buddy’ system in military camps, was found dead in an abandoned barrack in Nashik district of Maharashtra, police said on Friday. Roy Mathew, who hailed from Ezhukon in Kollam district of Kerala, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in an abandoned barrack in Deolali cantonment in Nashik yesterday, police said. (Follow The Tribune on Facebook; and Twitter @thetribunechd) The deceased was shown in the video, with his face covered, narrating the woes of soldiers. The video also showed soldiers walking dogs of

Roy Mathew officers and taking their children to school. The sting operation had led to criticism of the British-era Sahayak (buddy) system. The Army has ordered an inquiry into how the sting took place. Police said Mathew, whose body was decomposed, might have died three days ago. The soldier had been missing from the

Artillery Centre in Deolali since February 25 after the sting video went viral. Mathew was attached for ‘buddy duties’ with a Colonel-rank officer at the Centre. According to his family in Kerala, Mathew made his last phone call to them on February 25 and from the way he talked it was evident that he was in a frightened state. He told them that he had recently spoken to a media person about the woes of the soldiers in the Army and of the menial tasks which they were asked to perform. He claimed that he said these things after ensuring that he was not being recorded. But later, to his shock, the video went viral as his interview was secretly recorded.

GDP figures manipulated, says Kejriwal New Delhi, March 3 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday accused the central government of manipulating the GDP figures, saying those are “based on lies”. “The whole nation knows that the figures are manipulated. They are based on lies,” Kejriwal told reporters here. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s statement comes a day after the Congress also slammed the central government, saying it “fudged figures” on India’s GDP growth.

Arvind Kejriwal The official data released on Tuesday showed that India’s GDP for the third quarter ending December 31 stood at Rs 30.28 lakh crore, recording a growth of seven per cent.

Kejriwal said the people of India had stopped trusting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government. “When demonetisation was going on, every week they (central government) used to announce how many old notes had come back to the RBI (Reserve Bank of India). “Now three months have passed and the Centre is still not making it public how many notes finally returned. They say the notes are still being counted,” Kejriwal said.

Midday meal scheme: Aadhaar mandatory for cooks, students

New Delhi, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): Cook-cum-helpers working under the Midday meal scheme as well as the student beneficiaries will now be required to have an Aadhaar card to avail the facility with the HRD ministry mandating the same. The move, aimed at improving efficiency and transparency, comes following a push from the Central government to link the Aadhaar number with subsidy schemes related to school education. The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL), under the Human Resource Development ministry, has decided to give a window till June 30 to those who do not have an Aadhaar card yet. “The use of

Aadhaar as identity document for delivery of services, benefits or subsidies simplifies the government delivery process and enables beneficiaries to get their entitlements directly and in a seamless manner,” a senior ministry official said. “A notification will be sent to schools that students desirous of availing the benefits under the Midday meal scheme will be required to furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar number or undergo the authentication,” he added. A bench, comprising Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and U U Lalit, considered the submission of senior advocate Shyam Divan, representing the consortium led by State Bank of India, that USD 40 million Mallya had allegedly received from British firm Diageo in February last year and transferred to his children in “flagrant violation” of various judicial orders, including those passed by passed by the Debt Recovery Tribunal and the Karnataka High Court. The court has fixed hearing on March 9.

Vijay Mallya The banks prayed that orders be passed to “secure the deposit of the said amount of USD 40 million before this court or the DRT forthwith, pending disposal of the further recovery proceedings.” The bench, on January 11, had granted three weeks to Mallya to file an affidavit in response to the plea of banks. Divan said the banks

had also filed a plea seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Mallya. It is a matter of record that Mallya and his firm owe over Rs 6,200 crore to the banks and the money should have been deposited here, he had said. In October last year, the court had rapped Mallya for not making full disclosure of his overseas properties and had asked him to do so within a month. The bench had also pulled up Mallya for not giving details of $ 40 million which he had allegedly received from British firm Diageo in February last year, saying it was of the “prima facie view” that proper disclosure as per its earlier order was not made. The consortium of banks including SBI had alleged that the USD 40

million belonged to the consortium of banks which was now stashed in Mallya’s Swiss bank account and said it should be brought back to India or the Supreme Court. The banks had on August 29 last year told the Supreme Court that Mallya had deliberately not made full disclosure of his assets including the $ 40 million he received on February 25 from Diageo. It had asked Mallya, who owes over Rs 9,000 crore to around 17 banks, to deposit a “substantial amount” with it to . “prove his bonafide”

that he was “serious” about meaningful negotiations and settlement

Mallya blames Pratt & Whitney engines

Loans defaulter and fugitive Vijay Mallya today blamed “faulty” Pratt & Whitney (PW) engines for the collapse+ of his Kingfisher Airlines business. Mallya also said on Twitter that he’s sued a company called IAE, which is a PW Group Company, for compensation towards “defective” aircraft engines supplied to Kingfisher Airlines.

CHENNAI, mar 3 (agencies): President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said a strong deterrent is needed against those who want to adversely affect India’s progress and security in view of the ever changing geo-political situation in the region. He also honoured a helicopter unit for its meritorious works, including its stellar role in confining terrorists to a restricted area during the last year’s terror attack on Pathankot Air Force Station. “India is a responsible and emerging power in a multipolar, multilateral world. The ever changing socio- economic and geopolitical scenario in our region of influence demands a strong deterrent against those with nefarious designs to affect the progress, prosperity and security of our nation,” Mukherjee said. Apart from providing deterrence against inimical entities, both external and internal, the armed forces have been at the forefront of providing succour to the citizens during natural calamities, he said. “The operations by the Indian Air Force dur-

Hole in the bag

or a number of years, the financial position of the government of Nagaland has been worsening with deficit surmounting by the month and which has led to inordinate delays or non-payment of salaries to work-charged employees besides various government bills. There is a lot that was unanswered by the finance commissioner when ACAUT Nagaland demanded to know why the state government has not released salaries of SSA and RMSA and Hindi teachers since the past nine months and instead giving one excuse after another. The finance department appear to have, as alleged by ACAUT, “side tracked” the demand to come clear and instead went on a circuitous way to explain how funds were received from time to time. The main focus was to have been on how huge funds received were utilised for certain projects as part of the 10% state share for 142 CSS projects and released supposedly to the grass root beneficiaries but in reality, the CSS funds released went to the pockets of politicians and bureaucrats. On the other hand, ACAUT expressed anger at why the state government did not release salaries of teachers since past nine months on the plea that the state could not raise its 10% share?. ACAUT demanded explanation as to why salaries of Hindi teachers were not released despite the fact that the amount was fully funded(100%) under CSS? Taking a dig at the rejoinder by the finance commissioner to its earlier press statement, ACAUT stated that 201516 witnessed maximum teachers agitation despite the HRD ministry having released Rs.140.65 crore for SSA and RMSA. ACAUT appeared to conclude that it was not convinced by the juggling of funds( hedging of figures) .Instead, taking the fight right into the finance department, ACAUT accused the department of deducting “an illegal 10% commission on every developmental fund released to various departments taking advantage of the fact that all CSS amount is parked with the finance department”. ACAUT, citing reply under RTI stated that the state had received Rs.5229.56 crore (2015,16,17)from the Centre as per the recommendation of the 14th FC. ACAUT opined that this amount was more than enough to pay the combined salary component of SSA, RMSA and Hindi teachers. ACAUT said the 10% share of state share could not be more than Rs.20-30 crore in a financial year. The deficit currently is pegged at a little over Rs.1450 crore, which will be the figure for the current ending financial year. There are many reasons why deficits keep recurring in states like Nagaland and among which has been the fact that 65% of expenditure goes for payment of salaries to government employees whose numbers mysteriously keep rising despite ban on fresh appointments and creation of unsanctioned posts. Heavy borrowing exceeding the ceiling for projects such as construction of new and palatial office buildings has added to the financial burden. The sad news is that the Raghuram Rajan Committee proposed to replace the “Special Category” status of various states with a “Multi-dimensional index”. The onus would be on performance merit rather than on the “Special Category” merit. The brouhaha over NITI Aayog will soon be put to test. Meanwhile to get out of the debt trap, Nagaland will have to undertake drastic austerity measures and reduce the number of employees to the desired level. The fact now is Nagaland desperately needs tons of money to cover the deficit but will the Centre oblige?

DailyDevotion His Commission to Us

Feed My sheep. —John 21:17 This is love in the making. The love of God is not created— it is His nature. When we receive the life of Christ through the Holy Spirit, He unites us with God so that His love is demonstrated in us. The goal of the indwelling Holy Spirit is not just to unite us with God, but to do it in such a way that we will be one with the Father in exactly the same way Jesus was. And what kind of oneness did Jesus Christ have with the Father? He had such a oneness with the Father that He was obedient when His Father sent Him down here to be poured out for us. And He says to us, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). Peter now realizes that he does love Him, due to the revelation that came with the Lord’s piercing question. The Lord’s next point is— “Pour yourself out. Don’t testify about how much you love Me and don’t talk about the wonderful revelation you have had, just ‘Feed My sheep.’ ” Jesus has some extraordinarily peculiar sheep: some that are unkempt and dirty, some that are awkward or pushy, and some that have gone astray! But it is impossible to exhaust God’s love, and it is impossible to exhaust my love if it flows from the Spirit of God within me. The love of God pays no attention to my prejudices caused by my natural individuality. If I love my Lord, I have no business being guided by natural emotions— I have to feed His sheep. We will not be delivered or released from His commission to us. Beware of counterfeiting the love of God by following your own natural human emotions, sympathies, or understandings. That will only serve to revile and abuse the true love of God.

Post-mortem and the spoils Only the nnc can settle the Indo Naga Nagas of the 21st century Burma conflict on behalf of Nagas C

A

ny national political organization or institution needs a nationally mandated platform to voice the nation’s position and its aspirations. In the case of the Naga nation, the Naga National Council (NNC) was that only political Platform and Institution. It is also a fact that because of the NNC’s stated position, hundreds and thousands of Nagas sacrificed their lives for the nation’s defense. Yes, it is true that Naga commitment to the NNC had cost them dearly both in physical as well as material dimensions when over 600 Naga villages were burnt to ashes and over 100,000 Nagas perished in the jungles from starvation and diseases in the mid 1950’s when Indian troops invaded Nagaland. But can the Nagas therefore, reject their own mandated NNC platform and hope to achieve their national objective under some lesser platform just because their association with the NNC had cost them too dearly? Indeed, the NNC’s platform has been smeared with a lot of Naga blood and Naga tears. But the corollary question is: Can there be another Naga platform that can politically and legally substitute the NNC in bringing about a solution to the case of India and Burma’s invasion of our country? After all, it was only the NNC that submitted the six memorandums to the departing British Government before the Transfer of Power Act in 1947. These memorandums had stated all the historical and political facts of the Naga nation to the then most powerful Colonial Power on earth-Britain. Copies

aturing physically and mentally as a medical student from graduation to postgraduation in central India, and like many other fellow Nagas who have studied in mainland India for a reasonable period of time, I was also exposed to the contrasting Indian culture and mindset for this long. The inferiorly treated SC/ ST/OBCs, the subdued women etc. and various categories of reservations often surfaced for discussion. Such discussions were never pleasant in nature. On our part, never an opportunity was missed to say, “In Nagaland we do not have caste system, we Nagas are all equal and there is no discriminations”. That our women have more liberty than mainland Indian women did. Those days, to keep in touch with happenings at home, I subscribed Nagaland Page, the only local weekly circulating at that period of time. In my second or third year medical studies, I remember writing a letter to the weekly on gender issue. Even then, I never felt Naga women were subjected to social discrimination as a gender. I am not talking about gender equality but of gender discrimination feeling like “Naga women, go back to the kitchen” prevailing among feminist. As far I remember, as Naga boys and girls, we grew up on equal footings. I believe man and woman were created to be complementary to each other and not to fight over each other’s rights. Naga males were a race of warriors and Naga mothers had a big role of grooming their sons into that warrior mindset. While on the other side, perseverance and endurance; prudent firmness and tenderness, the qualities

of these memorandums were sent not only to Her Majesty’s Government in India but even to the House of Lords and the British Parliament through Lord Simon and Clement Attlee, the then Prime Minister of England. It was also only the NNC that sent ten memorandums stating the same Naga national stand to the incoming Indian government leaders before India was born on August 15, 1947. It was also only the NNC that raised the Naga flag of Independence on August 14, 1947- one day ahead of India. And it is only because of all these political and legal actions of the NNC, that the Naga stand for Independence and sovereignty stands irrefutable and un-challenge-able today or even into eternity. (Let the reader note here that, at the end of world history, all the nations of the earth will bring their honor and glory into the New Jerusalem which is the symbol of eternity). Rev. 21:26. But if we Nagas move away from this NNC platform, than we will be moving away from all these political and legal actions that anchors our national rights to the foundations of human history, international politics and international law. Such a move away from the NNC will leave our historical rights as a nation hanging on some foundation less political organizations which were conceived and born long after India and Burma had achieved their independence on Aug.15, 1947 and Jan. 4, 1948 respectively. Such an act would also condemn us to being a most foolish nation that stood by, voiceless and action less when the

whole Asian Continent was agog with the birth pangs of new born nation states in the late 1940’s. Coming to internal matters, like any other nations on earth, Nagas can also form tribal organizations, like the Ao Senden or the Angami Public Organization etc and even bring them together under a common umbrella called a Naga Hoho. They can also form various civil societies like the NPMHR the Naga Mother’s association etc. They can even form some internal \ political organizations based on political ideologies like the NSCN. These organizations can have their legal validity within the internal social and legal framework of a particular country. But none of these other internal political or social organizations can ever represent the Naga national issue of Independence in any international forum. This is impossible because the Indo-Naga-Burma issue is not an internal Naga issue or an internal Indian or Burmese issue. The Indo-Naga Burma issue is absolutely an international issue where two sovereign nations have forcefully occupied another sovereign nation that had declared her independence ahead of both the invading nations. Under international law, no nation can just move its troops beyond its own borders and forcefully occupy a neighboring country through brutal military might. In the case of India and Burma, this is exactly what they have done to Nagaland. And as for evidences, there is an uncountable record of data that can be shown in any \ international War Crimes Tribunal.

If however, an internal tribal and ideology based, Naga political organization like the NSCN IM would like to negotiate with the Indian Government for a so called “Shared sovereignty” for the benefit of its cadres, they can go ahead. They however must remember that they cannot impose such a settlement on the rest of the Naga people who are still standing behind their NNC Plebiscite of May 16, 1951 which was for total independence. This national Plebiscite was duly followed up by the solemn act of declaring that Independence on Aug 14, 1947. Here, the NSCN IM and the Indian Government must remember that neither they nor any other power on earth can ever undo the independence declaration of a nation from the pages of human history. In this context I would like to end by posing this hypothetical question to the NSCN IM and the Government of India: Can some Kashmiri militants and some Pakistani Generals, through some secret talks, nullify India’s declaration of her independence on Aug 15, 1947 in some “Shared Sovereignty” scheme? Surely every sane nation on earth would laugh at such a ridiculous settlement! N.B. Today is my birthday, and I am told that when I was born on March 3, 1956 a midst the sound of gunfire and bombings, my late aunty Rano Shaizawho was then the President of the NNC Naga women wing- brought me out in my swaddling cloths and declared: “Another NNC has been born.” Well, this article is my 61st birthday gift to the NNC! hildren of Nagaland, let us face some deeper truths for the sake of ensuring the survival of the “Great Naga Race”. Today we have access on almost every luxury presented by the spoils of the western technological revolution. And it has made our lives easier and comfortable than we could have ever had, without western influence. Let us analyze and understand the ground realities on where we actually stand under the guidance of our elected leaders over the decades and where corruption has led us into. Suppose in an alternate reality, the order of the world has gotten distorted and Nagaland has been cut off from the rest of the world. Then let us review what shall happen of the people. T h e e x p e n s ive i phones which the rich proudly own (and has something to do with the public funds) and every other device that enables us to access internets and make distant communications possible will become a mere gadget to play music or click photos, nothing more. Because we don’t have our own satellite, electromagnetic and radio waves transmitting facilities to broadcast the signals to make such feats possible. The piles of imported cars the govt. servants (lords) proudly own will just become a metal box with four tires because petrol will run out and we don’t have the means to exploit our resources neither do we have the industries and knowledge to manufacture technologies. In the end we would go back to our real identity based on our capacity and

Modern Nagas, where are we heading?

of motherhood were slowly being conditioned into the daughters. Also, a Naga family being agrarian, Naga mothers worked as hard as their menfolk in the fields or may be even harder. Her hands might have been calloused by hard work but she tenderly brewed rice beer to keep her man’s spirit high. In those ancient days, every able-bodied Naga was literally a hunted man. Menfolk on the other hand, kept their wives in utmost respect. Among Lothas, menfolk would not even call their wives by name. A man would respectfully and lovingly call his wife “Niyo” meaning your mother. The more romantic would call the wife “Loro” (lass) even up to old age. I am sure the same must have been the practice among other Naga tribes. So thus we came! Menfolk protected their womenfolk and children; womenfolk tended the home and groomed the young. Even household chores were divided into respective domains. A life of shared responsibilities and harmonious adjustment! Simple living yet a fulfilling life. Sustenance life yet, one of high morale and esteemed living. As a warrior race, Naga society by circumstances of living was a male dominated community. But, gender discrimination? I don’t think so. A Naga girl grew up to be as outspoken and as dominating a person as her male counterpart could be. Her bravery and resourcefulness was exceptional. The likes of Rani Gaidinliu could be found in all walks of Naga life. She could excel if she choose to. With the emergence of the concept of “State”, the role of running the affairs of the state got vested on men. There is no denying that the

resultant effect was unbalanced gender participation. This has been the phenomenon worldwide. And, if today the world is of the opinion that calls for women empowerment then, we Nagas also ought to see things from that perspective. If out of the needs of modern dispensation, women empowerment in our municipalities through women reservation is called for, we men may as well be accommodative. It can at its best, only be a short step-board mechanism towards gender equality in participation? Reservation in whatever form cannot be the absolute answer to women empowerment. In my earnest feeling, Naga women should opt for a mindset of “What men can do, we also can do” and seek the path of equality towards mutual living on equal footing and not by reservations of seats. I n areas like ULBs, perhaps a system of involvement by nomination can kick off towards balanced gender participation. Since time immemorial, every Naga village with its land had been an independent country selfgoverned by its own sets of civil code and criminal jurisprudences. Then came the big bang! A little more than one and a half centuries ago, Nagas were slapped upon with two major changes. The change from paganism to Christianity on one hand and from the traditional way of life to the monarchial subjugation followed by democracy on the other hand. Therefore, the concept of “State” is alien to the traditional Naga. So are townships for that matter. Out of necessity of changing lifestyle, today we are evolving into a modern society but, we are still at crossroads where

we continue to struggle on what can be culturally and traditionally relevant in today’s context or what should replace redundant and obsolete custom and traditions with modern concepts. Apparently, we have not socially evolved to an optimum level of development and there are conflicts of systems - the old and the new. There is a tendency to social malleability and personal identity confusion and, this is not healthy for the younger generation. Also, the fiercely territorial Nagas refused to be subjugated and the struggle to be an entity goes on. Even so, in this disturbing milieu of bloodshed, “Nagaland” State was born and numerous distinctive tribes came together to make a homeland. As part of the process, we elected people to man our State Legislative Assembly to run the affairs of the State. In Naga context, this process by itself is as uncustomary and as untraditional as the words can imply. Nevertheless, our journey starts as a unit of the federal set up of modern India by extraneous insertion of the now much highlighted Article 371(A) in the Constitution of India. Now therefore, Legislators will have to run the affairs of the State in tune with emerging needs and will have to make legislations accordingly. Legislations are need based and are for the progress and welfare of the people. Villages and the towns are the units of the State and the inhabitants are its people. No human settlement can continue to function arbitrarily. Even in our ancient tribal way of life, institutions like “Tongtichochang” among Lothas and “Pudu Menden” among Aos to cite some

examples, run the affairs of the concerned villages. They were the traditional local self-governments. Because of emerging needs most such traditional institutes of local self-governments (except Pudu Menden among Aos) have now been replaced or taken over by Village Councils. Village councils function by the Nagaland Village Council Act enacted for the purpose. Similarly. we have the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 for the formation of ULBs. Third Amendment of the Act, (NMA 2016) promulgated reservation of seats for women and certain tax reforms. Government did what it had to do given the circumstance but, consequently, there was mass movement against the government policies for our ULBs on the grounds that

potential which is farming and being half naked as our clothes are imported as well. This is the reality of the Nagas from a broader perspective leaving aside our ego. The State govt. over the years have bitterly failed to oversee the drawbacks of our society because they were busy buying more cars, houses and setting up their personal business establishments like market complex, resorts, showrooms etc. the fault perhaps is due to their less developed brains and the ‘small world’ their minds perceive in that compelled them to commit treachery and felony of the highest order which have resulted in the backwardness of our state mechanism. We have been under the care of the advanced civilized human beings from outside Nagaland which have provided us with all the luxuries we thrive in today long enough. Isn’t it time we start doing things for ourselves? How long will we be at the mercy of the ignorant corrupted leaders who doesn’t have a clue about the way the “real world” works outside Nagaland? With their kindergarten level speech and hefty donations to core societies they have manipulated the general public for far too long. Maybe in the distant future when the ‘not just educated’ but civilized young Nagas of today sits in the chairs then Nagaland could begin transformation but why not today? Why should we wait for 10 to 20 years to finally develop Nagaland? Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland (Media Cell), (ldpnagaland@gmail.com)

they are against our customary practices and infringes on Article 371(A). This has led to the exceedingly unfortunate turn of violent events with human casualty. What we went through was a costly experience of human existence. But, as with any other human conflict, the current situation has also simmered down and a semblance of normalcy has seeped in. Whatever corrective steps are taken, it will take time to heal. As for the bereaved families, life will never be the same again. The issues still remain and either way the truth will and must prevail to lead us into further path of progress. (To be concluded) Dr. Chumben Murry Ex. Minister; Wokha, (chumbenmurry@rediffmail.com)

If you follow the rule you become the rule breaker

Sir,

As I proceeded to Dimapur town I was held up in the traffic jam at Burma camp. Within seconds, few vehicles formed a new line from the left side/ pedestrian way and slowly pushed us into the middle of the road. No sooner, the traffic police reached us and scolded me for forming a new line. Most unfortunately, when I tried to explain he rudely said- ‘hala nakuribi’. In Dimapur, it is our daily experience that whenever there is a traffic jam, vehicles from the back immediately overtake the other from the left and right, thereby worsen the condition of the traffic. In addition to the jam, the harassment of the traffic Police to the wrong person without attempting to see or listen at who is the rule follower and the rule breaker is to be viewed with more seriousness. It is therefore my earnest appeal to the Dimapur Traffic Police to refine their manners and that strict traffic rules must be maintained to check the rule breakers in Dimapur town and its surrounding. Z. Angami, Concern citizen of Nagaland

Bihar suspends IAS officer for test paper leak Pat n a , M a r c h 3 (IANS): The Bihar government on Friday suspended an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer for his alleged role in a leakage of question papers, an official said. “The state government has suspended Sudhir Kumar, Chairman of Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Bihar, a week after he was arrested from neighbouring Jharkhand in connection with a leakage of question papers,” a General Administration Department official said.

Sudhir Kumar

The department has also issued a notification to this effect. Kumar, a 1987-batch IAS officer, was arrested along with four of his close relatives from Hazaribagh

district. He had widely been known as a hard working and honest officer. The Bihar IAS Association has protested against the arrest of Kumar and also demanded a CBI probe into the case. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised the issue of Kumar’s arrest in the ongoing budget session of the state assembly. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Bihar Police, which arrested Kumar, has submitted evidences against him to the state government. The SIT is said to have informed

the government that it has strong evidences against the officer. Last month after the leakage surfaced, the examination for recruitment of clerks in the state government, which was conducted in two parts on February 5 and 8, was cancelled. The leaked questions appeared in the social media sites and WhatsApp on both dates and went viral in no time. The SIT has also arrested the owner of a printing press in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, where the SSC, Bihar, question papers were printed.

Kolkata, March 3 (IANS): The West Bengal Assembly on Thursday passed a bill to regulate functioning of private health facilities, providing for up to three year jail terms and trials under the IPC for offenders and fines up to Rs 50 lakh in case of death of patients due to medical negligence. The West Bengal Clinical Establishments (Registration, Regulation and Transparency) Bill, 2017l, tabled by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee, was passed by voice vote, with the government rejecting the opposition demand that it be sent to the standing committee for scrutiny. The government

also turned down amendments moved by opposition members. The legislation, aimed at bringing transparency, ending harassment of patients and checking medical negligence in private hospitals and nursing homes, also brings clinics, dispensaries and polyclinics under its ambit. The bill makes it mandatory for private hospitals to pay compensations in case of medical negligence. Hospitals violating the new law will be liable to pay fine of Rs 10 lakh or more. “If there is medical negligence then compensation will be given by the establishment. For minor damages, Rs 3 lakh, for big damages, Rs 5 lakh and in

case of death, minimum Rs. 10 lakh. However, the compensation amount will not be more than Rs 50 lakh. This compensation will be given within six months,” said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing the House on the bill. The bill has the provision to set up a 13 member West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission to monitor activities of private hospitals. T h e h i g h - p owe r e d commission, to be headed by a sitting or former judge and having the status of a civil court, is empowered to summon both parties in case of a dispute and examine the case before passing an order.

NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court asked Maharashtra government on Thursday to respond within four weeks to a petition by bargirls challenging the constitutionality of a 2016 state law that virtually banned dance performances in bars, restaurants and hotels. A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R F Nariman issued notice to Maharashtra government on the petition filed by ‘Bharatiya Bargirls Association’ and asked the state’s counsel Nishant Katneshwarkar to file its response within four weeks. It posted further hearing on the petition for April 20. The association had moved the court last week finding that the state government had enacted a new law - “Prohibition of Obscene Dances in Hotels, Restaurants and Bar Rooms and Protection of Dignity of Women (working there in) Act, 2016” - to completely prohibit dance performances in these establishments to step around apex court’s earlier decision frowning at complete ban on such performances.

van said. He said there are around 60 villages. People from two villages will come to Neduvasal to participate in the project daily as the project would impact farming in the entire district. According to him, there is no clarity on how the mud taken out while drilling the well will be disposed and the source of water for the project. “Mostly the water will be drawn from the ground to be injected into the gas well at high force which in turn would deplete the water levels. Farming in our district is done with ground water,” Vairavan added.

need for DMK to do so and gain political mileage out of it. Stalin also denied it was the previous DMK regime that had given the nod for the hydrocarbon project. “It was methane project. When the Centre wanted our nod for studying the project, an MoU was signed and it is the Union government which has full powers to implement the project.” He added, “I urge the Centre to take a good decision in the matter. The protestors are continuing their agitation with the expectation that the Union government will come out with an assurance that the project will be shelved.” He wanted proper consultations among the people and farmers before implementing any project. Raja, a Rajya Sabha member, in his address said Tamil Nadu already faced serious issues in accessing water for its drinking and farming requirements and if the hydrocarbon project was implemented, it would lead to depletion of ground water availability in the region. “Whatever is the availability of ground water, it will be affected and depleted. It will lead to devastation of agricultural operations,” he said. He assured the protestors that if the Centre did not take any decision on the matter his party will take up the issue in Parliament on March 9 when it meets. Later, he told PTI, “the Centre should understand the gravity of the situation in Tamil Nadu and withdraw the nod for the Neduvasal project.

Ujjain/Kozhikode, MARCH 3 (AGENCIES): RSS leader Kundan Chandravat, who had announced a bounty of Rs. 1 crore for beheading Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has retracted his statement after it drew condemnation from various quarters including the Sangh. Chandravat, RSS Sah Prachar Pramukh in Ujjain, claimed he got some phone calls from Kerala threatening to kill him and was being targeted in social media. “I was pained on the issue of murders of Swayamsevaks and therefore made an emotional statement. I retract it (statement) and express my regret,” Chandravat said in a statement late last night. “I also got some phone calls from Kerala in which an unidentified caller threatened to kill me,” he claimed. Chandravat, in a meeting here, had announced the bounty to avenge the killing of RSS workers in Kerala, allegedly by CPI-M workers. His speech sparked an uproar, drawing condemnation from the RSS, the CPI(M) and the Congress on Thursday. In a video, which went viral, Chandravat is purportedly seen saying that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is behind

village, Vairavan said the project is by the central government. “There is the possibility of the project promoter going to the court and getting ruling in his favour as it happened in the GAIL pipeline case. In the pipeline case, the state government was against GAIL laying its gas pipeline through farm lands. But the company got a favourable ruling from the court,” Vairavan said. The Chief Minister had in a memorandum, submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requested the central government to stop the project. “All we are saying is that the project should not come in our district,” he added. “Many from our village are working in the oil fields in the Middle East and they know the issues involved in the project,” Vaira-

agitation against the hydrocarbon project at Neduvasal near here by joining the protesters and urging the centre to shelve it. “This is an issue concerning the farmers. The Centre should declare that the project will not take off,” Stalin said addressing the protesters. He said though the Tamil Nadu government had assured that it would not give its nod for the project, he wanted it to exert pressure over the Cenre and get the project halted. Stating that he expected the State and Centre to announce a “good decision,” on the issue, he said in case if it did not happen “DMK will stand behind you in your protests.” “I have realised you (people) are inclined to continue the protest if the situation continues to be the same,” he said. The villagers of Neduvasal have been protesting against the project for more than a week with support from many sections, including students. Later, answering questions, Stalin told reporters, “It is our desire that a special Assembly sitting should be convened and a resolution be adopted (against the hydrocarbon project).” Answering another question, he blamed the State government for the situation. Taking a dig, he said the government was not “having the time to ponder about such people’s problems... they have time only to consult AIADMK chief Sasikala in Bengaluru jail.” He denied politicising the issue saying there was no

Chennai/Pudukottai, March 3 (IANS): The protest against the hydrocarbon project in Tamil Nadu’s Neduvasal village in Pudukottai district entered its 16th day on Friday. The protestors decided to continue their agitation till the central government scraps the project, said an agitator. Pudukottai is around 390 km from Chennai. “It is a central government project. Our protest would continue till the central government scraps the project in our district,” Parthiban Vairavan hailing from Neduvasal village but working here told IANS. Welcoming Chief Minister K. NEW DELHI, Mar 3 (PTI): Gold prices drifted below the Rs 30,000-mark by falling Rs 275 to Rs 29,725 per 10 grams at the bullion market on Friday on weak global trend and fall in demand from local jewellers. Silver also dropped by a whopping Rs 1,350 to Rs 42,700 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said that a weak trend overseas and strength in the dollar against a basket of currencies on rising hopes of US rate hike this month, reduced the appeal of the precious metals. Globally, gold fell 0.21 per cent to $1,231.40 an ounce in Singapore. Besides, a drop in demand from local jewellers and retailers at current levels too weighed on prices, they added. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity tumbled by Rs 275 each to Rs 29,725 and Rs 29,575 per ten grams, respectively.

In this regard, the congress said NPF should clarify to the people of Nagaland on whether it approved Zeliang’s claim that he was dislodged as chief minister since he was from a minority tribe. NPCC stated that Zeliang minority tribe remark negated all the tall claims by the NPF about Zeliang’s “so called supreme sacrifice.” Further, reacting to NPF assertion on high command culture, the NPCC said it was pity that a regional party like NPF has allowed the BJP-RSS to dictate their thinking and policies and become their supreme high command. “NPF should realize that by pointing accusing finger at Congress, their three fingers pointed back at them are accusing them of succumbing to BJP-RSS high command that is hell bent on destroying our culture and way of life,” NPCC said. The congress also said that the flip flops of NPF campaign in Manipur were “not helping out brethrens either.” NPCC said it was ironic that NPF spokesman Achumbemo during recent election rally in Tamenglong had urged people not to vote for communal BJP. It asked the NPF to explain how the BJP becomes communal party in Manipur while they have no inhibitions to be together in Nagaland.

On similar lines, the wider NSE Nifty closed down 2.20 points, or 0.02 per cent, at 8,897.55, after shuttling between 8,860.10 and 8,907.10. On a weekly basis, the BSE Sensex fell 60.52 points, or 0.20 per cent, and the Nifty 41.95 points, or 0.46 per cent, halting a five-week rising streak. Services sector activity rebounded in February for the first time since October -- as was borne out by the Nikkei India Services PMI. “The market smartly reversed from its day low as investors accumulated stocks, having strong fundamentals, at attractive levels,” said Manoj Choraria , a Delhi-based NSE broker. Global cues were also weak following fresh losses at other Asian markets, in line with the global sell-off after recent rally, which had a bearing.

The attached assets, officials had said, include deposits in bank accounts, agricultural and other land, flats and jewellery, among others. Post demonetisation on November 8 last year, the I-T department had carried out public advertisements and had warned people against depositing their unaccounted old currency in someone else’s bank account. The I-T department is the nodal department to enforce the said Act in the country. The taxman had initiated a nationwide operation to identify suspect bank accounts where huge cash deposits have been made post November 8 when the government demonetised the Rs 500/1000 currency notes.

A total of 235 cases and instances have been registered under the said Act by the department till mid-February this year. Show cause notices for attachment have been issued in 140 cases where benami

Mumbai, Mar 3 (PTI): Market registered its first weekly fall in six after the Sensex today stayed on the side of caution despite deep swings as it failed to completely shake off growing concerns about US Fed action this month. Investors looked forward to Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen’s speech to check for any confirmation on March rate increase. Both indices have recorded their first fall in six weeks. After opening lower, the Sensex continued its slide to hit a low of 28,716.21, but across-the-board buying towards the finish line saw it recover most of the day’s losses to settle lower by 7.34 points, or 0.03 per cent, at 28,832.45. The gauge had lost 145 points in the previous session as investors booked profit after the recent run-up.

New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI): The tax department today warned that those who undertake Benami transactions would invite Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) of up to 7 years and such violators would also stand to be charged under the I-T Act. In advertisements issued in leading national dailies today, the Income Tax department stated: “Do not enter into benami transactions” as the Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988, is “now in action” from November 1, 2016. “Black money is a crime against humanity. We urge every conscientious citizen to help the government in eradicating it,” the Income Tax department said. The department also spelled out some salient features of the new Act: “Benamidar (in whose name benami property is standing), beneficiary (who actually paid consideration) and persons who abet and induce benami transactions are prosecutable and may get RI up to 7 years besides

Kim murder: N. Korean suspect freed

North Korean Ri Jong Chol (C), who was arrested in connection with the death of Kim, is transferred from Sepang police station, Malaysia March 3, 2017.

lice chief Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed Friday that Ri was released due to a lack of evidence against him. Malaysian Attorney General Mohamad Apandi Ali earlier said Ri would be deported because he lacked valid travel documents. Immigration director Mustafar Ali said Ri would be escorted by two representatives from the North Korean Embassy. The women charged with murdering Kim at an airport terminal were caught on grainy surveillance video smearing what Malaysian authorities say was VX nerve agent on his face and eyes, though both reportedly say they were duped into thinking they were playing a harmless prank. Four of the North Korean suspects police seek are believed to have left Malaysia the day Kim, the estranged half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, was killed. One of the suspects believed to still be in Malaysia is an official

at the North Korean Embassy. Khalid said the arrest warrant issued Friday was for 37-year-old Kim Uk Il, who works for Air Koryo, North Korea’s national carrier. Police say he arrived in Malaysia on Jan. 29, about two weeks before Kim Jong Nam was attacked. Malaysian authorities have not said why they want to question Kim Uk Il, but they believe he also is still in Malaysia. Kim’s death has unleashed a diplomatic battle between Malaysia and North Korea. On Thursday, Malaysia announced it is scrapping visa-free entry for North Koreans. A statement Friday from Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry ramped up the pressure on North Korea, saying it was “greatly concerned” about the use of the nerve agent. “Its use at a public place could have endangered the general public,” the ministry said.

Myanmar to restart SEZ YA N G O N , M A R 3 (IANS): Myanmar has formed a high-level committee and task force to restart the Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Tanintharyi region which was once suspended for years, the media reported on Friday. The SEZ committee for implementation of the Myanmar-Thai joint project to link the Andaman Sea to Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand is chaired by Vice President U Henry Van Thio, Xinhua news agency reported. Over the last few months, the SEZ committee has had more interactions with the Italian-Thai Development (ITD), one of the firms forming a consortium of private developers that signed a concession agreement with the government in 2015. The consortium consists of ITD, a JapaneseThai joint venture Rojana Industrial Park Plc and LNG Plus International Co, also from Thailand.

US AG recuses self from Russia probe; Trump slams ‘witch hunt’ WASHINGTON, MAR 3 (PTI): Beleaguered Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from any probe into Donald Trump’s election campaign amid the snowballing controversy over his alleged contacts with Russia which the US President described as a “witch hunt”. “I have decided to recuse myself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for President of the US,” Sessions said in a statement amid calls for his resignation from top Democrats after it emerged that he had met Russia’s ambassador here during the presidential polls campaign. His remarks came after President Trump said that he had “total” confidence in Sessions and he should not recuse himself from the Russia probe. However, Sessions went ahead with his decision despite the US President’s

Jeff Sessions

backing. “This announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation of the existence of any investigation or suggestive of the scope of any such investigation,” Sessions said. “Consistent with the succession order for the Department of Justice, Acting Deputy Attorney General and US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dane Boente shall act as and perform the functions of the Attorney

General with respect to any matters from which I have recused myself to the extent they exist,” he said. Trump, in a series of tweets, lashed out at the Democrats and defended Sessions. “Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional. This whole narrative is a way of saving face for Democrats losing an election that everyone thought they were supposed to win,” Trump said. “The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election, and now they have lost their grip on reality. The real story is all of the illegal leaks of classified and other information. It is a total ‘witch hunt!’” Trump said. Democrats are accusing Sessions of perjury and demanding his immediate resignation.

KUALA LUMPUR, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): Malaysian police on Friday released the only North Korean detained in the killing of the half brother of North Korea’s leader, and later said an arrest warrant had been issued for another whose whereabouts are unknown. Malaysia is looking for seven North Korean suspects in all, four of whom are believed to have left the

country Feb. 13, the day Kim Jong Nam died. The only people in custody are two women — one Indonesian, one Vietnamese — accused of smearing his face with the banned nerve agent VX. Ri Jong Chol, who had been detained since Feb. 17, was handed over to immigration officials for deportation. Police never said what they thought his role was in the attack, but national po-

Bill against call centres re-tabled in US Congress

Anti-terror operation to continue UN flays SL’s slow pace in addressing war crimes in Pakistan, says Nawaz Sharif

WASHINGTON, MAR 3 (PTI): A bipartisan Bill was today reintroduced in the US Congress to make companies that move call centres overseas ineligible for grants or guaranteed loans from the government, a move aimed at curbing the transfer of jobs to nations like India. Introduced by Congressmen Gene Green from the Democratic Party and Republican David McKinley, the US Call Center and Consumer Protection Act would deter companies from shipping American jobs overseas and incentivise them to locate in the US by creating a public list of “bad actors” consisting of those that shipped all or most of their service work overseas. “Being on the list would make these actors ineligible for federal grants or guaranteed loans, would require overseas call centres to disclose their locations to customers, and would require them to comply with US consumers’ request to be transferred to a service agent physically located in the US,” the two lawmakers said. The legislation is similar to a bill introduced in 2013 that would have required disclosure of a call centre location to consumers, along with the option to transfer to a domestic call centre. Green said there are 54,000 call centre jobs in the Greater Houston area alone and 2.5 million nationwide.

China concerned over S.Korea-US military drill BEIJING, MAR 3 (IANS): China has expressed serious concern over the joint military drill by South Korea and the US, which brought the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and other American strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula. “The current situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly sensitive and complicated,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang was quoted as saying by Xinhua on Friday. “Parties concerned should do more to ease tensions on the Peninsula and maintain the peace and stability of northeast Asia,” he added. He stressed China’s opposition to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in the ROK is consistent and clear.

ISLAMABAD, MAR 3 (IANS): During a high-level meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday, senior civil and military officials of Pakistan unanimously resolved that “Operation Raddul Fasaad” would continue till the “set targets” are achieved. Raddul Fasaad, which aims to eliminate the “residual/latent threat of terrorism”, was launched in February in the aftermath of a fresh resurgence in terror attacks in Pakistan. “The operation reflects our national resolve and commitment to the complete obliteration of terror-

ism from the entire country,” those in attendance at the Prime Minister’s House agreed as they reviewed the gains made thus far under the operation. The Prime Minister stated that across the board consensus amongst all stakeholders and the overwhelming sentiments of our people to get rid of terrorism will guarantee a comprehensive win in this war. “Pakistan has given immense sacrifices in its own war against terrorism and we are fully determined to remain steadfast in our commitment and duty to undertake all steps for eliminating terrorists

without any discrimination of geographic region, colour or sect,” Sharif said. The meeting reiterated that national unity and support were crucial for the successful implementation of the anti-terror strategy. Amongst those present at the meeting were Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Finance Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, National Security Advisor Lt. General (R) Nasser Khan Janjua and DG ISI Lt. General Naveed Mukhtar.

COLOMBO/GENEVA, MAR 3 (PTI): The UN today denounced Sri Lanka’s “slow pace” in addressing war crimes and warned that it may “derail” the momentum towards lasting peace and reconciliation with the minority Tamil community. The UN human rights office also asked the country to appoint international judges to investigate allegations of rights violations. “The slow pace of transitional justice in Sri Lanka and the lack of a comprehensive strategy to address accountability for past crimes risk derailing the momentum towards

lasting peace, reconciliation and stability,” it said. The remarks came at the launch of a report in Geneva on Sri Lanka’s progress in addressing crimes committed during the country’s three-decadelong civil war that ended in 2009. The report comes a day after Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said he had the guts to dismiss the UN demand seeking foreign judges to probe the alleged war crimes. But the rights body did not drop its demand for a hybrid mechanism with foreign judges to probe the allegations.

“Adopt legislation establishing a hybrid court, which should include international judges, defence lawyers, prosecutors and investigators, to investigate allegations of violations and abuses of international human rights law and violations of international humanitarian law, and provide it with the resources necessary to enable it to tr y those responsible promptly and effectively”. At the same time, the report hailed the government for advancing on constitutional reforms and showcasing some positive d eve l o p m e n t s o n t h e broader human rights

agenda. “The fulfilment of transitional justice commitments has, however, been worryingly slow, and the structures set up and measures taken during the period under review were inadequate to ensure real progress,” the report said. “Party politics, including the balancing of power between the different constituencies of the coalition in the run-up to constitutional reforms, have contributed to a reluctance to address difficult issues regarding accountability or to clearly articulate a unified position by all parts of the government.

re you a chain smoker? Beware. Cigarette smoke has the potential to block self-healing processes in the lungs by eroding molecules responsible for the renewal of lung cells and certain proteins essential for breathing, consequently leading to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), claimed a study. In patients with COPD -- manifested mainly through cough, bronchitis and breathing difficulties -- the lung’s natural self-healing, no longer takes place. “In healthy patients, the so-called WNT/betacatenin signalling pathway is responsible for the lung’s homeostasis. Until now, it was not clear why it was silenced in patients with COPD,” said Melanie Konigshoff from Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen -- German Research Centre for Environmental Health. The new study revealed that one of the Frizzled molecules -- Frizzled 4, when exposed to smoke -- plays an important role in halting lung’s natural self-healing process. In the lung tissue

of COPD patients, and especially that of smokers, there were significantly fewer Frizzled 4 receptors than in non-smokers, the researchers said. “Frizzled 4 is a receptor molecule that sits on the surface of lung cells, where it regulates their self-renewal via WNT/beta-catenin,” explained Wioletta Skronska-Wasek, doctoral student at Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen. “However if the cells are exposed to cigarette smoke, Frizzled 4 disappears from the surface and cell growth comes to a halt,” Skronska-Wasek added in the paper, reported in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Inhibition of Frizzled 4 signalling on the cells led to decreased WNT/betacatenin activity and consequently to reduced wound healing and repair capacity, the researchers noted. On the other hand, “the activation of the Frizzled 4 receptor can restore the WNT/beta-catenin signalling pathway and consequently lead to repair in the lung,” Konigshoff said.

Google Play Movies: Apple’s iTunes movie service is very Apple-y - only available on Apple hardware - and Google Play Movies & TV is very Google-y, so it’s based on the web and can be streamed to pretty much any device you like, with no need to store files locally at all. That means plenty of smart TVs, iOS, Android, most of the most popular streaming sticks and boxes, and of course any computer with a web browser on it. If you do a lot of hopping between devices it’s ideal. Cuban singer has filed a complaint against the Colombian pop stars Shakira and Carlos Vives, accusing them of plagiarising part of a song he wrote 10 years ago. Their hit, La Bicicleta, won last year’s Grammy Latino. Cuban musician Livan Rafael Castellanos claims that Shakira and Vives copied a line and part of the chorus of his 1997 song Yo Te Quiero Tanto. The complaint was filed at a court in Spain, where Shakira lives. A spokesman for the court said the case centred around an intellectual property problem and focuses mainly on the melody and the lyrics of the choruses of both songs. In La Bicicleta (or The Bicycle) Shakira and Vives sing “que te sueno y que te quiero tanto” (I dream of you and love you so much). The Cuban ar tist, known as Livam, sings “yo te quiero, yo te quiero tanto” (I love you, I love you so much).

ccording to Billboard, Nir vana’s iconic “Nevermind” album has returned to The Billboard 200 chart this week with 5,000 equivalent album units in the week ending February 23. This marks the LP’s landmark 350th nonconsecutive week on the tally — the eighthmost total weeks on the chart in its nearly 61-year history. The longest run on the list continues to belong to Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, with 927 weeks. “Nevermind” was reissued in 2011 in both standard and deluxe editions to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The album is often credited for eliminating “hair

metal” and introducing the world to the heavy rock sounds emanating from the Pacific Northwest that came to be known as grunge. Motley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx told SPIN about “Nevermind”: “I announced the album before its release on [MTV’s] ‘Headbangers Ball’. I said, ‘Here is an important rock album.’ I never understood bands saying Nirvana had anything to do with derailing their career. Maybe those bands just didn’t have the goods. You can’t pee like a puppy if you wanna run with the big dogs.” Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen commented: “At the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, we were the sacrificial lamb — it was Nirvana,

Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers, and Def Leppard. People were quite hostile towards us, which I thought was a joke — a new kind of music comes out that’s about you not wanting to be like anyone else and then you’re narrow-minded? Unfortunately, we got lumped in with these awful hair bands, which we didn’t really think we were part of anyway. So when Nirvana came on, it was, like, ‘Yeah, it’s gonna f*** us a bit,’ but it was also great music.” L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns said: “Pop metal at the time was getting so shallow and watered down. Nirvana just reminded people how ballsy rock is supposed to be. I got a copy of ‘Nevermind’ from a friend a few months before it came out — it didn’t immediately grab me, but after about a week, I was completely sucked in. [U.K.’s] Kerrang! [magazine] ran a photo of me wearing a Nirvana Tshirt onstage with a caption saying something like ‘Uh oh, is this the new trend?’ I really don’t care what my hair-metal peers thought or think.”

Missed family in jail, says Sanjay Dutt

ctor Sanjay Dutt, who was released from the Yerwada Central Jail in Pune last year, says he missed every moment of being with the people from the film industry, whom he fondly calls his family. Asked how has he evolved over the years, Sanjay, who made his debut in Bollywood in 1981 with the film ‘Rocky’, said here, “My experience with the industry has been fantastic...it has been 40 years... when I was in jail, I missed the moment of being with my family. This is my family - the industry.” The 57-year-old was arrested for illegal possession of arms in a case related to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, in which over 250 people were killed and several hundred were wounded. Sanjay is making a comeback to the silver screen with Omung Kumar’s directorial ‘Bhoomi’, which revolves around a father-daughter relationship. Talking about his comeback, the actor, who has three children, said, “When I reached the ‘Bhoomi’ sets, I was back

The best options for buying digital movies (instead of using Netflix)

s great as Netflix is, its catalogue of titles shifts around all the time - pretty much the only movies you can guarantee to be on Netflix forever are those it’s made itself. So if you want a digital movie, with no disc, that you can keep forever, then where should you turn? In fact there are more digital movie stores out there than you might think if you’re struggling for something to watch of a Saturday night. Here we’ll outline the best choices, plus a few of their pros and cons, so you can organise your purchases accordingly. iTunes: To give Apple credit, it believed in the dream of digital movies and music for quite a while before anyone else did, and its iTunes movie library is one of the most wellstocked around. From the latest blockbusters to oldtimey classics, there’s a huge choice. On the downside, the copyright-protection Apple builds into its iTunes movies means that for the moment you can only watch them on Apple hardware, or iTunes on a Windows machine. You can’t queue

the Iron Throne himself: For some years, Game Of Thrones producers have been trying to get Sheeran to make a cameo appearance, following in the footsteps of Coldplay drummer Will Champion and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody. But schedules were against him. “Every time they shoot I’m on tour,” he told The Sun. 8.Benedict Cumberbatch wouldn’t dance in his video: The Cumberbatch had agreed to do hip-hop dancing in the video for ‘Sing’ but his US agent vetoed it as, according to Sheeran,“It’s not right for him right now.” 9. Elton John made him release ‘Sing’: Initially the uncharacteristically upbeat R&B track, co-written with Pharrell Williams, wasn’t going to be on ‘x’ at all, until Elton John heard it at their joint management company’s office and told him: “That’s your first single.” 10. He dines with the stars: “I had Van Morrison take me for breakfast and tell me he loved me,” he told Radio X. “And I’ve had Eric Clapton come to my house for dinner – I’ve gone to his house for dinner and he tells me that he likes my music.”

Maria Sharapova

PARIS, Mar 3 (Agencies): French Open chiefs said Thursday they are reluctant to grant Maria Sharapova a wild card into this year’s Grand Slam event despite the two-time champion returning from a doping ban. The Russian superstar will return to the tour on April 26 in Stuttgart, the day her 15-month ban for testing positive for the banned substance meldonium ends. But French Tennis Federation (FFT) president Bernard Giudicelli said organisers would face a moral dilemma if they handed Sharapova a wild card which she would need as her world ranking has disappeared during her absence. “It’s complicated. We prefer that she returns completely rehabilitated,” said Giudicelli, who was only elected to the FFT hot seat on February 18. “Integrity is one of our strong points. We cannot decide, on the one hand, to increase the amount of funds we dedicate to the anti-doping battle and, on the other, invite her,” added Giudicelli, who was keen to stress that a decision on whether or not to hand Sharapova a spot in the main draw has not yet been taken. Five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova, the winner at Roland Garros in 2012 and 2014, has already been handed wild cards into the Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome tournaments with organisers fully aware of the former world number one’s immense pulling power.

M a d r i d, M a r 3 (Agencies): Sevilla moved to within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona as Vicente Iborra’s first-half winner earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. In a battle between the two principal candidates to take over at Barca next season after Luis Enrique announced his decision to step down at the end of

time and hit the ground hard. “A cranial and cervical CT scan carried out on Fernando Torres has ruled out that the Rojiblanco striker has suffered any alterations or traumatic injuries,” Atletico said in a statement. The visitors had to play out seven minutes of stoppage time with 10 men as they had already made all three substitutions. Former West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel was making his bow as Deportivo coach after only being hired on Wednesday. And the hosts made the perfect start when Florin Andone capitalised on a poor goal kick from Jan Oblak to run through and slot past the Slovenian. Atletico responded after half-time and equalised in stunning fashion 22 minutes from time when Antoine Griezmann thrashed home a shot from fully 30 yards.

And despite Iraizoz’s best efforts once more as he saved Jovetic’s spot-kick, Iborra forced home the rebound for the only goal. Athletic twice came close to an equaliser either side of half-time as Raul Garcia headed against the woodwork before stinging the palms of Sergio Rico. However, Sevilla held on to remain firmly in the title hunt. Spanish football breathed a sigh of relief after a CT scan on Fernando Torres revealed the Atletico Madrid striker suffered no traumatic brain injuries in a sickening on-field clash as they drew 1-1 with Deportivo. Kerala HC asks BCCI to lift Sreesanth’s lifetime ban

Kochi, Mar 3 (Agencies): Kerala High Court on Friday sent a notice to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on petition filed by Sreesanth to lift the lifetime ban imposed on him. The next hearing will be held on March 5. Sreesanth on Wednesday had filed a petition in the Kerala HC seeking its direction to the BCCI to allow him to play for a Scottish club in April. In his petition, Sreesanth, challenging the life ban imposed on him by the disciplinary committee of the BCCI, said even the trial court which heard the match-fixing case has observed that “no prima facie case in any offence including Section 3 of MCOCA is made out against the accused persons and they are

Sreesanth

entitled to be discharged.” All the 36 accused, including Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila, were discharged in the IPL-6 spot fixing case by Patiala House Court in July 2015. The BCCI, however, refused to alter its disciplinary decision even after the verdict. In his petition, Sreesanth argued that the BCCI

Djokovic out of ATP Acapulco

Novak Djokovic returns a shot to Nick Kyrgios’s during their match in Acapulco.

Acapulco, Mar 3 (Agencies): World No 2 Novak Djokovic has been knocked out of the ATP Acapulco event in Mexico in the quarter-finals by 21-yearold Nick Kyrgios. Djokovic, 29, was the top seed at the tournament but was seen off in straight sets by Australian Kyrgios, who produced the best performance of his career. Kyrgios ground out a 7-6, 7-5 victory over the Serb to book his place in the last four of the hardcourt competition. The one hour, 47-minute clash was the first-ever meeting between the pair, with Kyrgios fir-

ing an astonishing 25 aces in the match to edge past 12-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic. “It’s a big win,” Kyrgios said. “I was a little bit nervous because I’m sure the crowd was rooting for Novak. He’s one of the greatest players of all time, but I’m playing with confidence. My serve is the best part of my game, and I had one of my best serving matches tonight.” The young Australian’s serve proved the difference, with him earning just one break point over Djokovic throughout the match but winning a staggering 81 percent of his first serve points.

panel which inquired the matter had made its reports against him based on the information provided by the Delhi Police. He alleged that “the entire prosecution case framed out by the Delhi Police Special Cell” against him was based on a “cooked-up story created according to their aspirations and imaginations...” Sreesanth said he was invited by the Glenrothes Cricket Club, Fife Scotland for representing Gelnroth Team (Premier League in Scotland) to be held in the first week of April. In response to this invitation, he expressed his willingness to participate in the match provided he got the NOC from the Indian cricket board, Sreesanth said.

Rio Games bid under scanner Paris, Mar 3 (Agencies): French investigators think the vote to give Rio the 2016 Olympic Games may have been rigged, it is claimed. A Brazilian businessman paid $1.5m to the son of an influential International Olympic Committee member just days before the host city was chosen, according to French newspaper Le Monde. “The French justice suspects that this money may have been used to influence the votes,” it says. Rio 2016 organisers say the vote was “clean”. The Brazilian city won the right to host the Games by 66 votes to 32. The newspaper says investigators have established that a holding company belonging to the businessman paid the money to a company set up by Papa Massata Diack, a FrenchSenegalese marketing consultant who is banned for life from athletics for alleged corruption, and who is also the subject of a ‘red notice’ issued by Interpol. French prosecutors announced last year that they were widening their investigation into corruption in athletics to include the bidding and voting processes for the hosting of the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.

Man Utd in suspense over Ibrahimovic, Rooney futures MANCHESTER, Mar 3 (Agencies): Growing uncertainty over the futures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney threatens to overshadow Manchester United’s allimportant quest to return to the Champions League. Ibrahimovic has been a huge success during his first season in England yet recent comments have cast doubt over whether there will be a second. Ibrahimovic’s 26th goal for United was the winner as they beat Southampton 3-2 last Sunday to secure the League Cup, their first major trophy under Jose Mourinho’s management. But asked if he would trigger the 12-month extension option in his oneyear contract, the former Sweden international said, “We have another two months of the season to go. Let’s see how I feel, the situation. “Somebody made up a story that if we don’t qualify for the Champions League, I will not extend. It has nothing to do with that.” The 35-year-old has played his part in a very good spell in the cup com-

petitions for United since their last Premier League fixture on February 11. His hat-trick saw off Saint-Etienne in the Europa League last 32, he netted the winner against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round and scored twice to see off Southampton at Wembley. Already dropped from the starting XI, Rooney has played no part for United for the last month, firstly as a result of a muscle injury and then because he needed root canal treatment to sort out a dental problem. The club captain was an unused substitute against Southampton and has become an increasingly peripheral figure at Old Trafford despite breaking

United’s all-time scoring record in January. The 31-year-old is understood to be considering a return to his former club Everton, whose manager Ronald Koeman admitted on Tuesday that he was interested in signing the England captain. United, unbeaten in the Premier League since October, are guaranteed to climb up from sixth place with a win against Bournemouth at home on Saturday because the two teams immediately above them -- Liverpool and Arsenal -- play each other the same day. A fourth-place finish would mean Champions League football after missing out this term.

Indian eves beat Belarus 2-1 in second hockey Test

Bhopal, Mar 3 (IANS): Continuing their fine form, the Indian women’s hockey team defeated Belarus 2-1 in the second of their fivematch Test series. India got off to a good start by earning a penalty corner in the ninth minute when striker Rani successfully converted the penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead. However, Belarus did well in the next two quarters to contain the Indian women. The visitors equalised in the 36th minute when Sviatlana Bahushevicha struck a fine field goal. They continued to hold the Indian eves right till the end but a 60th minute penalty corner proved to be crucial as India managed to seal the game with Lalremsiami converting it successfully to give the hosts a 2-1 win.

Indian cricketers during a practice session a day before the 2nd Test Match against Australia at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Friday. (PTI)

Bengaluru, Mar 3 (PTI): Stung by the humiliating defeat in the seriesopener, Virat Kohli will face the toughest battle of his fledgling captaincy career when India take on a resurgent Australia in the second cricket Test starting here Saturday. It’s not often that an Indian cricket team goes into a home Test match trailing 0-1 and that’s exactly what makes the contest at the ‘Garden City’ even more enticing. Kohli and Co. are like cornered tigers after being hammered in their 333-run defeat against the Austra-

lians on a rank turner where unheralded Steve O’Keefe went home with figures of 12 for 70. With their juggernaut coming to a grinding halt after 19 consecutive victories, it’s now time to pick up the pieces. And the team under Anil Kumble’s guidance will look to decipher the winning code on a Chinnaswamy track that promises to be slightly better. The Indian batsmen will have to deal with Australia’s newest spin twins Nathan Lyon and O’Keefe while the pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazle-

wood is also expected to ask probing questions. Similarly, the Indians have not yet found a way to get Steve Smith out cheaply and the rival skipper, after his stupendous knock on a devilish pitch, will be itching to get one more. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja would certainly like to forget Pune as it was one match where they hardly got anything right with fielding bloopers adding insult to injuries. Another issue would be the effective usage of DRS, something India got terribly wrong in the first Test.

Kohli would certainly like to win the toss as it was one of the crucial factors in Pune. The fighter in him will aim to get even with the Aussie bowlers on whom he had feasted during team’s last Test tour Down Under. Skipper Kohli will certainly want batsman Kohli to read Mitchell Starc’s reverse swing and O’Keefe’s arm balls better than last time. The track is expected to last the distance but the fickle Bengaluru weather will be a concern as there is forecast of showers on Sunday - the second day of the match.
