NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): The stage is set for crucial Assembly elections in five states where voters will exercise their franchise to choose a new government. The Election Commission has announced the schedule for these elections, with West Bengal holding the longest polling in eight phases. As the political parties head into campaigning mode, ABP News and C-Voter tried to gauge the mood of the voters. They claim that the situation is in favour of Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, though the BJP is likely to see a better prospect.
West Bengal: Looking at the trends, Banerjee will score a hat-trick in the Assembly election, according to the opinion poll. The ABP-C-Voter poll said the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is likely to get 148-164 seats in the 294-member Assembly. The BJP, meanwhile, can get 92-108 seats, the opinion poll further said. There is bad news for the Congress and left Front, which ruled the state for more than three decades. The Left-Congress alliance may get 31-39 seats, according to ABP-C-Voter poll. The Congress tally is likely to shrink to 12, it further said. Kerala: The Left government is expected to survive in Kerala, the opinion poll said. It predicted that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by CPI(M) is expected to get 83-91 of the 140 seats. On the other hand, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) may get anywhere between 47-55 seats in the upcoming assembly election. The BJP may barely get two seats, the ABP-C-Voter opinion poll said. Assam: The BJP-led alliance is expected to retain power in the state, the ABP-C-Voter survey said. Out of the state’s 126 seats, the opinion poll predicted 68-76 seats and 42 per cent vote share for the BJP, and 43-51 seats and 31 per cent

The DMK is likely to get 154-162 of the state’s 234 seats, whereas the ruling AIADMK 58-66, the survey further predicted. In terms of vote share, the DMK is expected to get 41 per cent whereas AIADMK 29 per cent.

Modi in Bengal, Rahul in Kerala most suited for PM
IANS: Despite being the top choice as a Chief Minister in West Bengal, the voter in the state prefers Narendra Modi as a suitable candidate for the Prime Minister’s post. However, Lok Sabha MP from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency Rahul Gandhi is preferred in the state over Modi for the Prime Minister’s post. A total of 34.44 respondents preferred Gandhi, son of Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi, as a suitable candidate for the post while 33.71 per cent people think Modi as a most suitable candidate for the office. Interestingly in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, 19.94 per cent people prefer Gandhi as most suitable for the post of Prime Minister while about 21.84 per cent find Modi as the best candidate for the job. In West Bengal, only 10.16 per cent respondents believe that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is the most suitable for the Prime Minister’s post while 50.83 per cent people in the state find Modi best suited for the job. The outcome is based on IANS C-Voter Opinion Poll survey conducted in the last six weeks on over 8,796 people in Kerala and about 38,932 people in West Bengal.

LPG prices have gone up by Rs 125 per 14.2-kg cylinder since the beginning of February, price data from state-owned oil marketing companies showed. Also, jet fuel prices were hiked by a steep 6.5 per cent on the back of a rally in international oil prices. L A K H I M P U R / GOHPUR, MAR 1 (PTI): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday claimed that BJP leaders talk about implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in various parts of the country, but lack the courage to mention it in Assam. The state witnessed violent protests against the
CAA in 2019 and five persons lost their lives. The protestors saw the law as a threat to their cultural identity and livelihood. The grand alliance of the Congress and six other parties will form the government in Assam after the election as people are fed up with the false promises made by the BJP, she said. She was clad in a hand-
woven traditional Assamese ‘mekhla chador’, with designs typical of its Mising tribe. “The BJP makes tall promises before elections but during the next five years, they do nothing to fulfil them and people have realised it,” the Congress leader told reporters after addressing a meeting of party workers at Lakhimpur. B J P l e a d e r s m ove around the country talking about implementing the CAA but they are silent about it when they come to Assam, Gandhi said. “They lack the courage to mention it in the state and people of Assam should never allow them to even talk about it, let alone implement it,” she said. The objective of the CAA is to grant Indian citizenship to people of minority communities Hindu,
Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who had come to India till December 31, 2014 due to religious persecution in these countries. Indicating that there is more than one power centre in the BJP-led government in Assam, she said, “We are confused on how many chief ministers the state has -- one, two or many. Or is it remote-controlled from outside?” Beginning and ending her speech with “Joi Aai Asom” (Hail, Mother Assam), the Congress leader said, “You are not fighting for the party or your seat but Assam’s identity and your motherland”. The BJP-RSS ideology is such that it does not take the cultural identity of the state or its people into consideration, she claimed.

Meghalaya moots cable cars for Shillong
Correspondent
SHILLONG, MAR 1: Cable cars for the highly congested city of Shillong was on Monday mooted by the Meghalaya government as expansion of existing roads is difficult due to the land tenure system prevalent in the State. Addressing a workshop on ‘Urban Mobility for Shillong City’ at the State Convention Centre here, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong hoped that the recommendations made through the extensive and comprehensive study conducted by Dalberg will aid in decongesting Shillong. “Suggestion for operation of cable cars is highly favourable for the city as land acquisition for construction of roads and flyovers often meet with stiff opposition due to the land tenure system that exists in our State,” he

said, adding that the “need of thehour” was to meet short term goals. Tynsong also reiterated the need for improving and increasing public and school bus services. The workshop, inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister deliberated and chalked out an
action plan on the recommendations of the study on Urban Mobility for Shillong City conducted by the Meghalaya Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation Limited (MIDFC) and the Project Management Unit (PMU) of the World Bank-funded Meghalaya
Integrated Transport Project (MITP). The study was entrusted to a global consulting firm, Dalberg. Project Director, Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) and CEO, Meghalaya Infrastructure Development and Finance Cor poration Ltd. (MIDFC), D. Vijay Kumar said that the problem of improving urban mobility was a complex, multi sectoral problem which involves many stakeholders. Stating that Shillong has the potential of becoming a world class city and one of the best hill stations in the country, he, however, said that unless the mobility problem remains unsolved, this potential will not be realized. Destabilisation game-changer
W
ith the rise of Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) as the dominant political force in Indian politics since 2014,a plethora of defections from the politically weakening Congress party and other regional parties who joined the BJP at various points of times in the last six years, have continued the trend. After coming to power in 2014, BJP turned its attention on the north east which used to be dominated by Congress and regional parties. In 2015.BJP began with Assam when Congress leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was lured to join the party along with several Congress MLAs. A determined BJP government at the Centre managed to wrest Assam for the party in alliance with regional parties. Later, in Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP formed a government in 2016 through backdoor after engineering the defection of 33 of the 43 MLAs of the People’s Party of Arunachal Pradesh (PPA). In Manipur in 2017, BJP was invited to form the government courtesy of the governor even though the Congress had emerged as the single-largest party with 28 MLAs, and BJP trailed with 21 in the 60-member house. Later this was legalised post-government formation when six Congress MLAs defected to BJP. Interestingly, the Congress even failed to get some of the defectors as the house speaker sat on the petition for over a year. The same thing happened in Goa, where the BJP formed the government even though its tally (13) in the 2017 elections was lower than that of the Congress (17). The destabilisation game or ‘Operation Kamal’ continued when the BJP elbowed the Congress-JDS alliance government in Karnataka and managed to lure 17 Congress MLAs into resigning in 2019 and enabling the BJP to topple the Congress-JD(S) government and forming its own under the leadership of BS Yediyurappa. Even in Madhya Pradesh, BJP dislodged the Congress-led coalition government after Congress leader Jyortiraditya Scindia joined BJP along with 20 Congress MLAs. This was followed by an attempt to destabilise the Congress-led Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan by working on the friction between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot. However Gehlot proved more than a match and after Sachin had “a change of heart”, ‘Operation Kamal’ was temporarily suspended. Even the recent instances of defections in the poll-bound West Bengal from the State’s ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC) to the BJP is testimony to this fact. This has helped BJP to make steady political inroads in West Bengal. The BJP set its sight even in Puducherry where Congress-led alliance was in power. The house had no BJP MLAs in the 30-member house that includes three nominated. The Centre nominated three members belonging to BJP and set the ball rolling for the destabilisation game. Eventually, six ruling MLAs recently resigned and joined BJP. Puducherry was then placed under president’s rule and subsequently, election announced for April 6. BJP hopes to make its presence in Puducherry and also as backseat driver in Tamil Nadu in alliance with AIADMK. The proliferation of such practices resulted in the enactment of the anti-defection law in India in 1985. Thereafter, the subsequent unfolding of political developments revealed that the anti-defection legislation has largely failed to stall the menace of defections and it continues to take place unabated even today. What is however clear is that the BJP has inched ever closer to its stated goal of a Congress-free India, or even an opposition-mukt India.
DailyDevotion The Piercing Question Do you love Me? —John 21:17 Peter’s response to this piercing question is considerably different from the bold defiance he exhibited only a few days before when he declared, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” (Matthew 26:35; also see Matthew 26:33-34). Our natural individuality, or our natural self, boldly speaks out and declares its feelings. But the true love within our inner spiritual self can be discovered only by experiencing the hurt of this question of Jesus Christ. Peter loved Jesus in the way any natural man loves a good person. Yet that is nothing but emotional love. It may reach deeply into our natural self, but it never penetrates to the spirit of a person. True love never simply declares itself. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men [that is, confesses his love by everything he does, not merely by his words], him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God” (Luke 12:8). Unless we are experiencing the hurt of facing every deception about ourselves, we have hindered the work of the Word of God in our lives. The Word of God inflicts hurt on us more than sin ever could, because sin dulls our senses. But this question of the Lord intensifies our sensitivities to the point that this hurt produced by Jesus is the most exquisite pain conceivable. It hurts not only on the natural level, but also on the deeper spiritual level. “For the Word of God is living and powerful…, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit…”— to the point that no deception can remain (Hebrews 4:12). When the Lord asks us this question, it is impossible to think and respond properly, because when the Lord speaks directly to us, the pain is too intense. It causes such a tremendous hurt that any part of our life which may be out of line with His will can feel the pain. There is never any mistaking the pain of the Lord’s Word by His children, but the moment that pain is felt is the very moment at which God reveals His truth to us.

nternational communities have seen many peoples’ struggles over land and its sovereignty. Prior fights for justice were exceedingly faced with blood baths rather than a friendly departure. But after the Second World War, majority of world powers has changed its views in solving the problem of rights to self-determination in a much matured approach of ever relational binding. The much speculation on the impending IndoNaga political settlement is not only confined to Indian and the Nagas alone, but it has become a universal concern. The present challenge to India today is their ability to shift from focusing on weaknesses to focusing on finding strength to solution, for the idea of strength to political solution had been endured by ‘shared sovereignty’ that was mutually accepted to end Asia’s longest resistance movement by signing the 3rd August, 2015, “Framework Agreement”. Form long and after considerable observations one can be critic that government of India is apprehensive to settlement with ‘shared sovereignty’ assuming that it will immediately give to a new round of violence, especially in Manipur, Assam, Arunachal
A Nation with God or Without
Pradesh and elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent. However, in Amsterdam 11 July, 2002, Indian Government represented by the then interlocutor K. Padmanabhaiah and Naga people represented by the General Secretary of the NSCN, Th. Muivah communiqué a significant recognition formally signed the Unique History and Situation of the Naga people which was considered as the greatest justice done to rights of humanism. It was recognized not because Nagas are above other world communities’ rights, but for the facts that Nagas were never been a part of India ever before and after India formed Independent republic. History is cleared as Nagas’ situation is totally a different case from those merged into Indian Union was implicit yet, the fear to conflict settlement by India is her greatest weakness and nothing more than fearing her own-shadow. It is a deliberate denial of right to life and existence on earth. The main pillar of moder n democracy is based on the concept of sovereignty that honor liberty, freedom and identity; that recognized juridical independent territorial entity; that gives the right to independently deter-
mine its own institution of government. Undoubtedly, Indo-Naga concept of shared sovereignty must be without ambiguity refers to sharing of competencies, resources and power between the two entities. Most of the conflicts found in Asia and Africa are due to displeasure against the poor performed governing state powers nevertheless, Naga historical and situation is cleared to be unique thus, the contemporary concept of share sovereignty cannot be leveled to Indian petty domestic unitary vernaculars thereby, finding Indo-Naga political solution must be within the acceptance of international legal sovereignty to withstand the test time. India deceitfully wobbled Nagas into the confluence of two influences which every sensible soul should perceive and despise the dualistic antagonist. Significant are, one that was formally acknowledged and mutually entered into “Framework Agreement” on 3rd August, 2015 at the presence of the honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi for peaceful coexistence. The event was globally broadcasted and it was taken as the historic moment for India and the Nagas. Subsequently, GoI silently revealed its expertise in
Freedom of speech is a joke
N
ow that the intolerance debate is over and it has been established beyond reasonable doubt that we are a tolerant nation, we can safely discuss the limits of freedom of speech. Back in the bad old days when there was presumed intolerance, people had to be silenced by mob lynching or guns. Not such uncivilised behaviour anymore. We can take revenge in a nonviolent civilised way by filing FIRs and slapping defamation cases. That is a massive upgrade. Had it not been for those in the bad habit of speaking out about anything, including their elected Government, it wouldn’t be required. Earlier it was journalists, writers, authors and thespians. Now, another breed of the so-called champions of free speech, comedians, have joined the gang, especially the stand-up comedians. The freedom to speak, laugh or breathe has to be balanced with the other person’s right to get offended. Sure thing. If you are breathing air reserved for someone else, you are choking him. If your deafening laughter hurts and jokes make me throw up, you had better watch out. Now that is a joke but no laughing matter. Indeed, offending anyone is not a good idea, especially when you laugh at someone’s looks or body size. The person has indeed the right to get offended. Ironically, that is often tolerated by the society. Kapil Sharma’s blatant humour at the expense of his co-stars is ignored. No one files an FIR against him. The problem starts when the jokes, laced with truth, blast the hypocrisy of those in power. The jokes cracked by the standup are rarely personal. Her/his jokes are about the hypocrisy in the system, religion and society, and that offends people. In fact, the two most offended sets of people are religious gurus and politicians. To say you belong to a religion is one thing
but to presume that the religion belongs to you, quite another. In 2015, the self-appointed defenders of Islam shot Charlie Hebdo employees in Paris. For what? For a few lines they had used to depict the Prophet! But the Quran does not explicitly forbid images of the Prophet. Back home, Munawar Faruqui spent a few nights in the Indore Jail for allegedly cracking anti-Hindu jokes. Now, who gave these people – Hindus and Muslims – the proprietary of the religion they were accidentally born into? When did the gods ask you to defend them? Be offended if a priest of your shrine rapes. Be outraged when your coreligionist kills in the name of your religion. But that doesn’t happen. You prove your bravado by heckling and harassing a comic whose words were too offending for you. Religion is not someone’s personal turf that he ought to defend. A person has the right to get offended if he is body shamed. A guy may take offence to being called fat but it would be rather absurd that he becomes the spokesperson for all fat people on the planet. A self-appointed policeman to protect all people overweight! The other group of most offended types is the politicians. These are the people who make a joke of the system but, when ridiculed, act sacrosanct. They must not be laughed at. That is the exaggerated sense of entitlement. Napoleon Bonaparte once said: “In politics, absurdity is not a handicap.” Exactly, they are kind of necessary evil but don’t risk telling them that. You could end up in jail. Indian politicians are known for many things but humour isn’t one of them, though we have had a few exceptions. Mahatma Gandhi was never offended when Sarojini Naidu called him Mickey Mouse. Piloo Mody often took jibes at Indira Gandhi. Laloo’s humour is infectious. The incumbent Prime Minister, too, has a
carrot and stick policy by signing “Agreed Position” on 17th November, 2017 with the WC, NNPGs. RN Ravi undertaking to IndoNaga political issue is nothing more than advocating Nagas are Indian and it is the only contemporary realties. However, NSCN is committed to recognition of Naga identity for all time to come, while the later (WC/NNPGs) accepted temporary settlement for present Nagaland state (taken as an honorable and inclusive) and left Naga national issue as an aspirational pursuit lest assured to the future vision. To the Naga people and the Churches of Nagalim, Naga national movement is author and survives by Jehovah thus, Nagas will live by God and her land shall be for Christ. The rainbow and the Bethlehem star are the sacred covenant between God and the Nagas, “blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage” (Psalm 33:12), reading Isaiah 60:12, “for the nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish; those nations shall be utterly laid waste”. So, will Nagas surrender their living God for worldly material advantages and fear bereavement? “Jerusalem”
is everything for the Jews; the inscription of “In God We Trust” is sacred to the United State of America. Will the Jews, American and world nations ever disown their consecration? Likewise, Nagas will be failed in her obligation to the Almighty if IndoNaga political settlement is sought without Naga flag and constitution. Nagas are colonized by India through militarization; divided and rule by Myanmar and India without any legal rights; Nagas house are sliced into pieces and placed for the conveniences of the oppressors so, surrendering Nagas rights shall amount to abandoning the living God. Realizing that force marriage can’t build a home, peaceful co-existence between the two entities within the modern mechanism of shared sovereignty was ceremoniously agreed upon. How then, acceptance or recognition of ones’ symbolic political elements comes to be contentious? Every sensible being ascertain illogical validity and who is fooling whom. Is political negotiation a stage of conscious dictation and terrorization? Every sectional detachment polices and to stub out the hard earned peace and procrastination to settlement laid
by India will soon face a tragic end. Recalling to “A Tale of Two Cities”, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way”. I chose this phrase because it is very much applicable to both negotiating parties the time that we’re going through now. The time of harvest is plentiful and at hand. Nagas and the churches of Nagalim, how obstinate will you remain when His coming kingdom is challenged? If anyone is taking God, be fearful to take anything lesser than your God. In this divine affair, knowing and following God must be proved. The battling war is God’s fight; it is choosing God or comfort; light or darkness, to live with identity or to live without a future and a nation with God or without is the ultimate choice. After the implementation of the FASTag mechanism, national highway toll plazas alone have crossed 6 million transactions worth Rs 100 crore. In addition, there is a 10 percent growth in the number of transactions on a weekly basis, the government data showed.

Tikait questions govt’s silence
RSS, Modi insult Tamil language: Rahul Gandhi
BIJNOR (UP), MAR 1 (PTI): BKU leader Rakesh Tikait has claimed that the Centre’s “silence” for the past few days indicates that it is planning some steps against the farmers’ agitation over newly enacted agriculture laws. He also stressed that it is the government that will have to come forward with a proposal for talks to resume with the protesting farmers. Before leaving for Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar on Sunday night, the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader told reporters in Bijnor’s Afzalgarh, “The government’s silence for the past 15-20 days is indicating that something is going to happen. The government is planning some steps against the agitation.” However, Tikait said farmers will not step back till a solution is found. “The farmer is also ready. He will look after his crop as well as the agitation. Let the government hold talks when it has the time,” he said.
KANYAKUMARI (TN), MAR 1 (PTI): Tamil Nadu should show the way to India in keeping away forces that are inimical to language and culture and those projecting “one culture, one nation and one history” concept, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Monday. The Lok Sabha MP participated in multiple engagements in this district as part of his three-day tour of Tamil Nadu, ahead of the April 6 Assembly polls in the state which his

party is facing in alliance with the M K Stalin-led DMK. If he were to interview Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi said he would ask “why are you convinced that all answers should come from you”. He also said the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), strongly opposed to by Tamil Nadu political parties, was a “big issue” and “not beneficial” for students. The Wayanad MP displayed his fitness when
he effortlessly did multiple pushups, including onehanded, while he shook a leg with the students he interacted with, as accompanying Congress leaders Dinesh Gundu Rao and K S Alagiri joined him. At a public address in Nagercoil in the district, Gandhi said history has shown nobody can rule Tamil Nadu other than the Tamil people. “This election will show the same thing that only a person who truly represents the Tamil people can be a Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” he said. “Tamil Nadu chief minister (K Palaniswami) who bows to Prime Minister Narendra Modi will never be able to do this. The chief minister should bow to the people of the state,” he said. The RSS and Modi “insult Tamil language and culture”, he said, adding the people should not to allow them to gain a
foothold in the state. Gandhi further said “Modi talks about one culture, one nation, one history and one leader.” “Is Tamil not an Indian language? Is Bengali not an Indian language? Is Tamil culture not Indian culture? This is the battle that is being fought in this election,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It is my duty to protect the Tamil language, culture and history just as it is my duty to protect all languages and religions in India,” he said. He accused the BJP-led government at the Centre as well as the Palaniswami government of not respecting Tamil language, culture or tradition. Recalling the yeoman service of late Congress MP H Vasantha Kumar, Gandhi said he always stood by the party values. He laid a wreath at Kumar’s memorial at Kanyakumari.
NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): The adoption of FASTag has reduced the average waiting time at toll plazas to 150 seconds this year, compared to 464 seconds last year, which is expected to save fuel worth Rs 20,000 crore for the country, said Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday. The minister, who launched a live monitoring system for toll plazas across the national highways to
gauge waiting time and traffic queue length on a real-time basis, also said the move would reduce carbon emission by 5 lakh tonnes per month. He said the system will come out with a Daily Congestion Index monitoring the traffic across the country. The government made FASTags mandatory starting from February 15 this year. As per the current regulations, vehicles not having FASTags will

NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): Protesting farmers will block the Kundli–Manesar–Palwal Expressway on March 6, a Samyukta Kisan Morcha leader said on Monday. Balbir Singh Rajewal said that a call has been given to farmers camping at three Delhi border points to block the KMP Expressway from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday. Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, have been camping at the Delhi border points --Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur --- demanding a complete repeal of three farm laws enacted in September last year “We will block the KMP expressway on March 6 as part of the intensification of the ongoing protest,” Rajewal told PTI.
front company Chengdu 404 Network Technology. The report said, “One of the accused previously claimed to be ‘very close’ to the MSS (Chinese Ministry of State Security), continuing an established trend of Chinese private contractors and front companies conducting cyber espionage activity on behalf of the MSS. Conversely, Tonto Team has been linked to the PLA (Peoples Liberation Army), specifically the Shenyang Military Region Technical Reconnaissance Bureau.” Recorded Future linked the intrusions to the recent border tension between the two countries and identified ten Indian power generation and transmission organisations and two ports that it said were targeted. The company said that it had “notified the appropriate Indian government departments prior to publication of the suspected intrusions to support incident response and remediation investigations within the impacted organisations”. The report said that India was also involved in cyber espionage and that it had “observed the suspected In-

NEW YORK, MAR 1 (IANS): A cyber intelligence company says it has found that hackers linked to China have infiltrated power systems and ports in India in a “show of force” and they have the ability to create disruptions. The company, Recorded Future, warned, “As bilateral tensions continue to rise, we expect to see a continued increase in cyber operations being conducted by China-linked groups such as RedEcho in line with national strategic interests.” In the report made available to IANS, Recorded Future said that the intrusions “pose significant concerns over potential pre-positioning of network access to support Chinese strategic objectives”. The incursions could also be “a precursor to kinetic escalation” -- that is, preparing for possible cyberattacks on infrastructure by planting malware. The report said that the intruders into the Indian networks used a malware called ShadowPad to set up a backdoor for them to enter the system, which was also used by other Chinese espionage teams. The RedEcho group linked to the intrusions into India shared characteristics with Chinese groups APT41/Barium and Tonto Team, the report noted. It said that in September the US government filed charges against five Chinese APT41 and linked it to the

NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (PTI): The Supreme Court Monday directed 2,318 undertrial prisoners, who were granted interim bail by the trial courts here amid the COVID-19 pandemic, to surrender in jail within 15 days. The apex court said that 356 prisoners, who were earlier granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court in view of the pandemic, would also surrender in jail within 15 days from today. A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao and S Ravindra Bhat passed the directions while hearing the pleas, including an appeal filed by ‘National Forum on Prison Reforms’ (NFPR) against the October 20 last year direction of the Delhi High Court which had said that its blanket order extending all interim stays and bails granted prior to and during the COVID-19 lockdown would not remain in effect after October 31, 2020.
BENGALURU, MAR 1 (PTI): Distancing himself from the Jammu meet of G-23 leaders, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Monday virtually expressed concern over internal differences in the party spilling out into the open, and backed Rahul Gandhi’s return as President of the outfit. The former union minister was one of the group of 23 leaders who wrote to the interim President Sonia Gandhi in August last year urging her to ensure “fulltime” and “visible” leadership. It has since come to be known as ‘G-23’.

MUMBAI, MAR 1 (PTI): The massive power outage in Mumbai on October 12 last year may have been the result of a cyber sabotage, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said on Monday, citing a probe report of the state’s Cyber Cell. Addressing media persons jointly here with Energy Minister Nitin Raut, Deshmukh said the Maharashtra Cyber Cell has also mentioned in its preliminary report that unaccounted data may have been transferred to the MSEBs (state electricity board) server from a foreign server. He, however, did not name the country from
where the data may have been transferred. Deshmukh’s comments came in the wake of a US company’s report claiming that amidst the border tension in Ladakh last year, a Chinese government-linked group of hackers targeted India’s critical power grid system through a malware. The report raised suspicion whether the massive power outage in the financial capital was a result of the online intrusion. On October 12, a grid failure in Mumbai resulted in a massive power outage, stopping trains on tracks, hampering those working from home amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and
hitting the economic activity hard. Deshmukh also referred to a related news report in the ‘New York Times’ as he spoke to the media persons. The Cyber Cell’s report into the outage, prepared with the help of electricity department experts, was handed over to Raut on Monday evening. We had discussion with our colleague Raut about examining if there was any such possibility (of cyber sabotage) after the power failure in Mumbai. The Maharashtra Cyber analysed the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (of the MSEB).

However, the exams have been delayed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Central board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which conducts board exams around the same time every year, has also deferred its exams to May-June this year. Suu Kyi appears in court via video links
YA N G O N, M A R 1 (AGENCIES): Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi appeared at a court hearing via video conferencing on Monday as supporters marched in several towns and cities in defiance of a crackdown after the bloodiest day since the Feb. 1 military coup. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of protesters in the main city of Yangon on Monday, witnesses said. They later combed through side streets firing rubber bullets and at least one person was hurt, media reported. Suu Kyi, aged 75, looked in good health during her appearance before a court in the capital Naypyidaw, one of her lawyers said. Two more charges were added to those filed against her after the coup, she said.

“I saw Amay on the video, she looks healthy,” lawyer Min Min Soe told Reuters, using an affectionate term meaning “mother” to refer to Suu Kyi. “She asked to meet her lawyer.” The Nobel Peace laureate, who leads the National League for Democracy (NLD), has not been seen in public since her government was ousted and she was detained along with other
party leaders. She was initially charged with illegally importing six walkie-talkie radios. Later, a charge of violating a natural disaster law by breaching coronavirus protocols was added. On Monday, two more charges were added, one under a section of a colonialera penal code prohibiting publication of information that may “cause fear or alarm”, and the other un-
der a telecommunications law stipulating licences for equipment, the lawyer said. The next hearing will be on March 15. Critics of the coup say the charges were trumped up. Myanmar has been in chaos since the military seized power after alleging fraud in a November election won by the NLD in a landslide, with daily protests getting increasingly violent as police and troops try to stamp them out. On Sunday, police fired on crowds in several places killing 18 people, the United Nations human rights office said. A committee representing lawmakers elected last year said 26 people were killed but Reuters was unable to verify that. “We have to continue the protest no matter what,” Thar Nge said after police firing tear gas forced him
and others to abandon a barricade in a Yangon street. “This is my neighbourhood. It’s a lovely neighbourhood but now we’re hearing gunfire and we don’t feel safe.” The military has not commented on Sunday’s violence and police and military spokesmen did not answer calls. The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper warned that “severe action will be inevitably taken” against “anarchic mobs”. Demonstrators marched on Monday in the northwestern town of Kale holding up pictures of Suu Kyi and live video on Facebook showed a crowd in the northeastern town of Lashio, chanting slogans. Police and soldiers later raided a church in the town and detained 11 people, a church group said in a statement.
Former French prez Sarkozy convicted of corruption; handed prison sentence PARIS, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): A French court found former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of trying to bribe a judge and influence peddling on Monday and sentenced him to three years in prison, a stunning fall from grace for a man who led France and strode the world stage for five years. However, he may not spend any time in prison. Two years of the sentence were suspended, and the presiding judge said she would accept allowing him to be tagged with an electronic bracelet outside of prison for the remaining year. Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012, is the second head of state in modern-day France to be convicted of corruption. Prosecutors persuaded

the judges that after leaving office, Sarkozy had offered to secure a plum job in Monaco for a judge in return for inside information about an inquiry into allegations that he had accepted illegal payments from L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt for his 2007 presidential campaign. “He took advantage of his status and the relationships he had made,” presid-
ing judge Christine Mee told the court. Another judge will decide whether to permit Srakozy to wear a bracelet instead of being imprisoned. Retired from politics but still influential among conservatives, Sarkozy has 10 days to appeal the ruling. He left the court without speaking. He had denied any wrongdoing, saying he was the victim of a witch-hunt by financial prosecutors who used excessive means to snoop on his affairs. Sarkozy burst onto the world stage as a reformer full of ideas who would break with France’s stagnant past on the domestic front and restore the birthplace of human rights to a place of prominence in international affairs.

Chelsea, Man United play out goalless draw in EPL
Players of Chelsea and Manchester United in action during the EPL match.
LO N D O N, M A R 1 (AGENCIES): Chelsea and Manchester United played out a drab 0-0 draw at the Stamford Bridge in a Premier League clash on Sunday. The two clubs thus created some unwanted history as this is the first time in 99 years that they have been involved in two goalless draws in a single season. While the contest as a whole was nothing much to talk about, what did make the news is a dubious penalty decision that went against Manchester United. After some pressure from Mason Greenwood, Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea appeared to have handled the ball with the referee Stuart Attwell stopping the play to consult the VAR monitor. However, Hudson-
Odoi was deemed to have not committed any error and thus the penalty wasn’t awarded. The decision didn’t go down well with Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who accused Chelsea of influencing referees. “Yep. 100 per cent,” Solskjaer replied when asked whether he thought penalty should have been awarded. “When they stop it and (Attwell) walks across. From here you can see it’s handball, they’re shouting handball against our player. It’s taken two points away from us. I can’t say, because that’s not gonna be good for him. I didn’t say it, I don’t want to cause controversy. It’s not right is it.” Solskjader pointed fingers to a recent article on Chelsea website that talked
about Harry Maguire. “It’s all this outside influences, VAR talk before the game on Harry, cheeky when they put that on the website. That’s influencing referees. You can read what they’re saying about Harry Maguire and putting pressure on referees to give penalties against us,” he said. “We’ve seen there was a manager, was it Frank [Lampard], that started it. Loads of talk about us getting penalties when there’s no doubt, and of course today we should’ve had a penalty,” he added. What the draw does is hurt Chelsea’s chances of finishing among the topfour and further increased the gap between PL leaders Manchester City and chasers Man United to 12 points.

Novak Djokovic equals Roger Federer’s world number one record MELBOURNE, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): Novak Djokovic has equalled Roger Federer’s record of 310 weeks ranked as world number one. The 33-yearold Serbian is guaranteed to break the mark next week. Djokovic won his 18th Grand Slam title and his ninth Australian Open crown in Melbourne last month. “After achieving the historic number one for the longest weeks at number one, it’s going to be a relief for me because I’m going to focus all my attention on slams mostly,” he said. His victory in Melbourne takes him to two wins behind the joint holders of the men’s Grand Slam record, Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic has been helped by temporary changes to the ranking system because of the coronavirus pandemic which means players can currently count tournaments from two years instead of one. However, he is still the

in-form player on the men’s tour, beginning 2021 by winning nine consecutive matches while last year he did not lose a completed match until the French Open final in October. Djokovic’s fifth spell at the top of the rankings began on 3 February last and he has been number one for all but 32 weeks since Federer hit 310 weeks in June 2018. His longest stint as number one was 122 weeks between July 2014 and No-
vember 2016. Djokovic sits on 12,030 points - more than 2,000 clear of Rafael Nadal, with Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem the only other players with more than 7,000 points. However, he still trails the women’s number one record holder Steffi Graf who held top spot for 377 weeks, while Martina Navratilova (332) and Serena Williams (319) have also had longer spells at number one than Djokovic.

MADRID, MAR 1 (IANS): Atletico Madrid opened up a five-point lead over Barcelona at the top of La Liga after a 2-0 win away to Villarreal. Recent results implied the game could be another potential banana skin for Atletico, who have seen their lead at the top of the table cut from 10 to three points over the past three weeks, but Diego Simeone’s side got through their visit to the east coast with three vital points, Xinhua news agency reported. They had a touch of fortune in their opening goal when Stefan Savic’s 24th-minute header was saved by Sergio Asenjo only to bounce back over the line off Antonio Pedraza, but an assured second-half display saw Joao Felix double their lead in the 69th minute after a poor clearance from Pau Torres. The result puts pressure on Real Madrid, who

than three weeks after losing 2-0 on the same ground in the Copa del Rey. Dembele put Barca ahead after a pass from Messi in the 29th minute and Messi doubled the lead with five minutes remaining. Barca will worry about losing key players after Pedri went off injured and Ronald
Araujo lasted just minutes in his return from an ankle injury. Kike Barja’s 77thminute goal gave Osasuna a 1-0 win in their local derby away to Alaves, who have lost six games from eight since Abelardo Fernandez returned as first-team coach and now slip back into the relegation zone. Getafe will breathe easier after ending a run of five defeats from six games which had put the future of coach Jose Bordalas in doubt. Mauro Arambarri opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a 35-yard thunderbolt, Juan Mata doubled Getafe’s lead shortly after Valencia defender MouctarDiakhaby was sent off for a professional foul, and on-loan midfielder Carles Alena completed the rout five minutes from time. Huesca continued their improved form with a 1-1 draw away to Eibar with Sandro Ramiro opening the
scoring for Huesca in the 81st minute, before Pape Diop’s header two minutes later drew Eibar level. Valladolid climbs out of the bottom three despite conceding an injury-time equalizer that condemned them to a 1-1 draw away to Celta Vigo. Winger Fabio Orellana put Valladolid ahead after Celta goalkeeper Ruben Blanco parried a shot to leave him with a tap-in, but Jeison Murillo’s powerful 93rd-minute header denied the visitors a vital away win, even if it lifts them above Alaves. The round of matches kicked off with Levante and Athletic Club warming up for Thursday’s Copa del Rey semi-final with a 1-1 draw with both goals coming from the penalty spot as Roger Marti opened the scoring for Levante 10 minutes before halftime and Raul Garcia cancelled that goal out after the break.
LOS ANGELES, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): LeBron James marked his 1,300th NBA regular-season game by helping the Los Angeles Lakers to a 117-91 victory over the Golden State Warriors. James, who has won championships with three franchises, had 19 points plus six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots in 24 minutes. He sat out all of the fourth quarter along with the rest of the starters from both teams as the Lakers closed out a dominant victory. It avenged a narrow loss in January. The Lakers are still without star forward Anthony Davis but have now won two in a row after a run of five defeats in six

games. “When you lose a mega-piece like AD, it’s going to take some time both offensively and defensively,” said James He added that the Lakers were becoming more
comfortable in the roles they have had to adopt with Davis sidelined, an absence that Lakers coach Frank Vogel said called on them to develop a “little bit of a new identity”.
