India test-fires indigenous AAD
Advanced Area Defence Endo-Atmospheric Interceptor Missile.
DRDO has conducted this exercise for the second time in less than a month. An official said, “Today’s test launch was conducted in order to validate various parameters of the interceptor in flight mode.” In today’s trial in Balasore (Odisha), the interceptor missile was fired at a target in the form of a Prithvi missile (which played the role of a hostile missile) launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, which was launched at 10.10 in the morning. According to officials, who provided an insight into the dramatic launch, after about four minutes the interceptor, Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile, which was stationed at Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal, received signals from radars about the incoming rogue missile. The interceptor was launched and managed to destroy the incoming hostile missile in mid-air. DRDO claimed a huge success and said, “The mission was excellent and it was a direct hit.” DRDO explained that the interceptor missile is 7.5-meter long, single stage
solid rocket propelled guided missile, that carries a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electromechanical activator. It also has its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities aside from radars. ISRO had on February 15 successfully placed a world record 104 satellites into space that included 101 foreign satellites and three Indian ones on in a single launch on the sturdy and reliable PSLV-XL ((Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket to cement the country’s position as a space tech global leader. Thereafter, except for 2 Indian nano satellites, all the rest 102 satellites have been reported as fully functioning in their desired orbits. India had gone past Russia’s 37 in terms of the number of satellites launched by a single rocket achieved in 2014 that it had managed by using a modified inter-continental ballistic missile. In June 2016, India had achieved a national record after sending as many as 20 satellites into space in one launch.
Hard work more powerful NPCC slams Zeliang for than Harvard: PM Modi playing communal card MAHARAJGANJ (UP), MAR 1 (PTI): Mocking economists, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said “hard work is more powerful than Harvard” as the latest GDP data shows demonetisation did not affect growth rate, rather the figures improved. “On the one hand are those (critics of note ban) who talk of what people at Harvard say and on the other hand is a poor man’s son who through his hard work is trying to improve the economy,” he said at an election meeting here. “In fact, hard work is much more powerful than Harvard” he said without elaborating. His remark came against the backdrop of Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen terming demonetisation as a “despotic action that has struck at the root of economy based on trust”. The government had yesterday pegged GDP growth at a higher-thanexpected 7.1% for 2016-17 despite the cash blues, which was higher than China’s 6.8% for Oct-Dec period of 2016, making India retain

the tag of the world’s fastest growing economy. Coming back to electoral politics in Uttar Pradesh, Modi said the electorate has already ensured BJP’s victory in the first five phases and now they would give surplus votes as “gift and bonus” in the remaining two rounds. “I request the voters of the state to give the rest of the two phases as bonus to the party. This is similar to the chillies and coriander leaves, which the vegetable seller gives to the buyer as bonus,” he said. Earlier, Modi spoke on the possibility of a hung assembly in UP, saying SP and BSP were waiting for such an opportunity for bargaining, prompting chief minister Akhilesh to comment that after dreaming of 300 plus seats, Modi was now talking about fractured verdict.
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) through its media cell has hit out at statements made by “recently deposed chief minister T.R. Zeliang and Education minister Yitachu” over the option of using central forces and T.R. Zeliang alleging he was a victim because he belonged to a minority tribe (Zeliang) and claiming the high command of NPF is the people. NPCC said the option to use central forces exposed “their hollow mindset” that had no respect for the voices and sentiments of the people. NPCC pointed out that the entire ULB election was a fiasco resulting in loss of lives and damage to property that could have been averted had the NPF leaders “tactfully handled the simmering situation.” On T.R. Zeliang claiming he was a victim only because he belonged to a minority tribe, NPCC said it by claiming so, he (Zeliang) has only brought disrepute on himself. In the first instance, how did T.R. Zeliang become chief minister? asked

NRMSATA accuses state ANHTU ultimatum NSCBDS demands National govt. of diverting funds on DoSE extended tag for Ruzazho village in Phek
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): On Nagaland being awarded as the top performing State from amongst the Northeastern States in the field of IT and e-Governance sector by Computer Society of India (CSI)-Nihilent, Nagaland governor, PB Acharya congratulated minister for transport, civil aviation and IT&C, Paiwang Konyak, and the entire team of Information Technology and Communication department for “this remarkable achievement under Paiwang’s leadership.” According to an official bulletin, the governor has expressed happiness that the award recognized the efforts of Nagaland in making outstanding progress in the field of IT & e-Governance sector. Describing the achievement as an important milestone, Acharya said “This is also a testimony that Nagaland is second to none. We need to have special focus on IT and e-governance sector so that more job opportunities can be created and Nagaland can become IT hub of North East India’.” Further, the governor suggested that the state should make use of all kinds of advanced/latest technology to impart skill training to youth in order to cope up with the fast changing scenario in the world.

“They’re all irregular. They say the department is in deficit so there’s no use coming to office.” K Y M C
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): Alleging diversion of fund (sanctioned by MHRD) by State government was the reason behind irregular/ delay in payment of salary to Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhijan (RMSA) teachers, the Nagaland RMSA Teachers Association (NRMSATA) has asked State government to retract the funding process from the finance department. In this regard, NRMSATA president Renbemo L Patton and general secretary Kezhothito Keyho sought chief minister intervention and necessary action. NRMSATA stand was that in the initial stage when CSS programme SSA, RMSA etc. were introduced in the State, teachers were paid their salary on time and if delayed only for one to two months, as the fund sanctioned by MHRD was directly account-
ed to the responsible sections/departments. However, payment got delayed after State government diverted the fund to finance and planning department where fund for CSS employees were kept in Government Civil Deposit to maintain minimum balance in the state exchequer. N R M S ATA a l s o slammed the “lackadaisical attitude” of the state government in not following the guidelines and procedure lay down by the MHRD that led to frequent delay in release of salary. According to NRMSATA, in order to avail the next instalment, the responsible department has to prepare utilization certificate (UC) and submit it to MHRD, to prove that the sanctioned amount has been utilized. RMSA central body also asked State government to give its due 10% share on time.
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): All Nagaland Hindi Teachers’ Union (ANHTU) has resolved to extend the ultimatum served on the department of school education (DoSE) till March 7, to release nine months pending salaries. This was resolved at an emergency meeting of ANHTU office bearers with CSS Hindi teachers district representative on February 28, 2017. In a joint press release, ANHTU president, Rometo Sema, and CSS Hindi teachers convenor, Ilika Aye, cautioned that failure to fulfil its demand within the stipulated time would compel the union to launch phase-wise agitation by 1379 CSS Hindi teachers. The union said it had on January 24, 2017 served ultimatum on the director, DoSE to release CSS Hindi teachers nine months pending salaries on or before February 10, 2017, but the department failed to fulfil its demand till date. Meanwhile, all the district CSS Hindi teacher representatives have been requested to prepare for agitation.
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (NPN): Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Memorial Development Society (NSCBDS) Nagaland on Wednesday demanded recognition of Ruzazho village in Phek district as “National Heritage Village”. NSCBDS team led by chairman Er. Vekho Swuro took up the matter with Governor P.B. Acharya, when they met him at Raj Bhavan, Kohima on Wednesday, PRO said in a statement. They also sought Acharya’s intervention on their demand. In reply, Governor asserted that proper befitting memorial should be held for Naga people and also Subhash Chandra Bose, who fought under INA in Nagaland. He also viewed that Ruzhazho village should be declared as a Heritage Village by the Central government since Subhash Chandra Bose came to this village during freedom struggle. Acharya further said that those Nagas who fought under Indian National Army should also be declared as freedom fighters and receive financial benefit.
‘Above normal’ temperature this summer: IMD NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): Earlier in January, the World Meteorological Organisation revealed that 2016 was the Earth’s warmest since record-keeping began in the 1880s. According to NOAA and NASA scientists, 2016 set a global heat record for the third year in a row, but seems that’s not enough as more hot weather is expected in the coming days, especially in India. In its summer forecast for the season (March to May), the India Meteorological Department has predicted ‘above normal’ temperature across the country - at least up to June - even as January was recorded as the eighth warmest in 116 years. The IMD said that several states are likely to witness heatwave conditions and that the northwest region of the country would be the worst affected with

temperatures of more than one degree Celsius above normal. In the rest of the country, temperatures are likely to be a degree Celsius above normal. “Above normal temperatures up to one degree Celsius are likely to prevail over all meteorological subdivisions of the country, except the northwest India where temperatures are like-
ly to be more than 1 degree Celsius above normal,” the IMD said. Above normal conditions are likely over “core heatwave zone”. This includes Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, C h h a t t i s g a r h , B i h a r, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana.
The core heatwave region also includes Marathwada, Central Maharashtra and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra and coastal state of Andhra Pradesh. While 2016 has been termed as the hottest year since 1901, Phalodi in Rajasthan recorded 51 degrees Celsius - the highest ever recorded in the country. Last year, more than 1,600 people died due to extreme climate conditions. Of them, 700 died due to heatwave conditions. This included over 400 deaths in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. “The country averaged monthly mean temperature during January 2017 was also significantly above normal with anomalies of 0.67 degree Celsius, which is the warmest ever since 1901,” the IMD said. This January has been recorded as the eighth warmest since 1901.
In this regard, Nagaland Governor told NSCBDS members that he will approach union minister Prakash Javadekar and brief him on the urgent necessity to recognise Naga freedom fighters under INA and to felicitate those fighters who are still alive, and the children whose parents died fighting for India’s freedom. Governor also acknowledged the role played 97-year old Poswuyi Swuro, as a Dobashi to administer Ruzhazho during Netaji’s visit. Further, Acharya informed the team members that five years ago, the Centre had released some funds to Tsiesezou village where Netaji last came, and therefore, he would ensure that the fund was utilize for the right purpose. Er. Vekho asserted that Netaji promised empowerment, employment and development as rights to the villagers after achieving sovereignty from the British. He was accompanied by secretary, Dupoyi Nyekha and advisor NSCBDS Phek, Kuvehu Soho.

NPCC. Instead T.R. Zeliang ought to be grateful to legislators for giving him the opportunity to head the government and therefore, his speech at Tamenglong revealed his pettiness and negative attitude unbecoming of the position he hold, said NPCC. NPCC said playing the minority card was a desperate attempt to polarize people on communal lines and cautioned T.R. Zeliang that he should know that playing with fire could also burn his hands instead of others. NPCC also said T.R. Zeliang repeated talks that he sacrificed the chair of the CM was hollow since he was forced out of the chair after all legislators abandoned him. Instead of leaving gracefully, NPCC said T.R.Zeliang has only shown his “hunger for power and position” by accepting the unconstitutional post of Advisor with cabinet status to continue in power. However by doing so, T.R.Zeliang had demeaned the office of the chief minister he occupied for 32 months said NPCC.

solved most of the NE problems. NPCC stated that NPF was not only wasting time and money in Manipur as 15 candidates of NPF “know that they have no future” and can never form the government alone in Manipur. People are also aware that the BJP has denied alliance with NPF in Manipur while NPF was senselessly talking against the Congress, added Therie. Terming that NPF politics has “strangled the economy of Manipur”, Therie said that “we must open opportunities for people to par-
ticipate and get benefits” as youth exodus is “our major concern.” Therie also said that progressive development was a matter of service to the people and peace and progress were always the objective of good politicians. He also pointed out that “star ving people through economic blockade” does not go well with humankind. Since we are Christians, Therie said that “we are expected to do what is morally right to all manners of people in the spirit of our religion.”

Stating that in the case of implementation of PMAY-G, it was the community through VDBs that would have to identify and select the beneficiaries as per SECC 2011 data, he expressed optimism that the VDBs would continue to play pro-active roles and ensure that deserving beneficiaries were not left out. He also reminded that state gover nment has also come out with a 2030 Vision Document by incorporating all spheres of development, whereby he urged the officers to make full use of the various programmes implemented by the department so that the r ural people were developed at par with urban dwellers. Delivering the key note address, secretary RD, Kelei Zeliang mentioned that Pradhan Mantri Awas
Yojana (PMAY-G) was formally launched at the national level by prime minister of India on November 20, 2016 and in continuation of this launch, the state of Nagaland has formally launching PMAY-G at the state level to give wide publicity of the scheme. Students ransack BJP, Cong office in Imphal
Correspondent
IMPHAL, Mar 1(NPN): Student activists on Wednesday stormed the head offices of Congress and BJP in Imphal and ransacked the BJP office as demand for early justice to fake encounter victims intensified on Wednesday. The student activists, under the aegis of Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), were launching a series of protest demanding urgent action to deliver justice in all the fake encounters and extra-judicial killings in the state. T h e va n d a l i s m o f the students at BJP office was after they had stormed the Congress Bhavan in the heart of Imphal city Wednesday afternoon. Window panes, doors, gate and CCTV camera at the main gate of the office and furniture of the head office including that of party president’s chamber were damaged. Police team later arrived and prevented the activists from causing more damages to the office of the saffron party located oppo-
site the Imphal Raj Bhavan. However, no casualty was reported in the incident. The vandalism came at a time when BJP national leaders including its president Amit Shah were camping in Imphal and hectically engaging in election rallies of the party. Earlier, the protesting students stormed the Congress Bhavan in Imphal’s BT Road along with a group of women vendors who also staged a sit-in protest at Khwairamband Keithel on the same issue. However, timely intervention by the police dispersed the protestors before entering the premise of the office of the ruling party. KSA has been launching a series of protest on the streets in Imphal in the last few days demanding early justice in all the fake encounters in the state which a PIL case is pending with the Supreme Court. Since the late ’70s, according to the Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families Association (EEVFAM), the petitioner of the case in the Supreme Court, there has
been 1,528 fake encounters in Manipur. Human rights activists blame AFSPA for the killings, alleging that the law gives blanket protection to the Army and the Manipuri commandos to kill with impunity. Besides, the CBI has re-opened the most sensitive fake encounter in which a former PLA member and a pregnant woman was killed at crowded Khwairamband Keithel in the heart of Imphal in the broad daylight on July 23, 2009. KSA president who led the protest today said that the protest was staged so that political parties and candidates in the fray in the ensuing general elections to the state Assembly aware of the suffering of the common people under the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act, 1958 which is still in force in the state except the area covers by the Imphal Municipality area and committed them that there will be no more such fake encounter in the state. “Repeal of AFSPA is also our demand,” he added.

Hovercraft on Brahmaputra for counter-terrorist ops
NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): Seeking to strengthen troops’ ability to conduct counter-terrorist operations along the Brahmaputra in the Northeast, the Indian Army is planning to deploy hovercraft on the river to carry out strikes in marshy areas and shallow waters. The initiative is being taken by the army’s eastern command in Assam, where terrorist groups such as National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) have been getting active and have traditionally had their camps in marshy lands and high grass areas along the river. “We are in the process of deploying hovercraft on the Brahmaputra as part of Inland Water Transport (IWT) units, which were on the verge of disbandment, and will now be provided with new equipments and assets to strengthen them,” an army officer told MAIL TODAY. The army’s IWT units have been in existence since the British era and were used extensively in operations in Burma and Bangladesh during WW2. Sources said the Brahmaputra passes through the heart of Assam and other
Northeastern states and in the past, terrorists from various outfits such as ULFA and NDFB used islands on the river as bases. “The hovercraft can also be used for area domination and prevent terrorists from setting up base in areas around the river,” an official said. The hovercraft, also known as air cushion vehicles, can swiftly chase terrorists out of their hideouts that operate under the cover of high grass found abundantly along the river, sources said. Of the 14,500km of navigable waterways in India, a major chunk of navigable stretches is along the Brahmaputra, GangaHooghly and Barak rivers in the eastern part of the country. These are manned by the army command based out of Fort Williams. With the hovercraft, the eastern command is also looking to help out soldiers who have to reach their deployment areas quickly. “IWT units ferried more than one lakh soldiers in that area,” an official said. The availability of such vessels will also help forces carry out disaster relief operations in the Northeast where floods and landslides are common.

Arvind Kejriwal While Kejriwal’s pleas were dismissed, Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Raghav Chadha fared better as his application for framing of an additional issue, that statements made by him in public fora against a public figure are privileged from defamatory action, was allowed by the court. It, however, did not frame the additional issue whether the plaintiff (Jaitley) has to prove that alleged defamatory statements were made out of malice, after senior advocates Rajiv Nayar and Pratibha M Singh, appearing for the BJP leader, objected to it. The court also allowed his plea for filing original annual reports and statements of accounts of DDCA for the period from 2000-01 to 2012-13. While denying Kejriwal’s plea, the court said it is “nothing but a fishing or roving enquiry” and that “it is for defendant 1 (Kejriwal) to adduce evidence from accounts from where money has allegedly flown to the plaintiff (Jaitley), instead of wanting a negative
information.” The AAP supremo in his application had contended that he had sought the financial records of Jaitley and his family members from 1999-2000 to 2014-15 “to disprove” the BJP leader’s allegations against him and five other party leaders named in the defamation case. Jaitley, in December last year, had appeared before the high court to record his evidence in connection with the defamation case. In his second application, Kejriwal had sought removal of those portions of Jaitley’s statement given in his evidence, which were not stated in his suit. Kejriwal’s lawyer argued in court today that if it was not possible to remove the portions, then the trial in the case should be held separately for him. The judge disagreed with the contention, saying “there cannot be a mini-trial at this stage” and added that if the court started adjudicating such applications at the stage of recording of
Jats announce non-cooperation; to protest in Delhi Chandigarh, March 1 (IANS): Unhappy with the authorities over their demands and grievances, Jat protestors on Wednesday announced non-cooperation after the Holi festival (March 13) and taking their stir to Delhi from Thursday. All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti leader Yashpal Malik said the Jats -- who resumed their agitation on January 29 -- will take their protest to New Delhi from March 2. Under their non-cooperation plan, members of the Jat community have been asked to stop paying electricity and water dues and stop supply of milk and other essentials like vegetables to the national capital. Meanwhile, the Haryana assembly discussed the ongoing Jat agitation. Indian National Lok Dal leader Abhay Singh Chautala, who moved an adjournment motion during the Budget session, said the Congress and the BJP were trying to play politics on reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to the Jats of Haryana. Chautala said the state’s BJP government had failed to implement the community’s demands even after agreeing to them last year. Apart from reservation, the Jats are demanding jobs to the next of kin of those killed in violence in the agitation last year, compensation to those injured, withdrawal of cases against them and action against officers who ordered action against the Jats. Violence during the Jat agitation in February 2016 left 30 people dead and over 200 injured. Government and private property worth hundreds of crores of rupees was damaged.
evidence, it would defer the trial. During arguments on Chadha’s plea for seeking framing of an additional issue of whether his alleged defamatory statements were privileged, the court was of the view that “there is no such privilege”. “It is a dangerous proposition you are making. It means a spokesperson stands on a different footing,” the court said. It was also of the view that issue of privilege would be covered by the issues already framed in July last year. If issues were framed on every plea, then “instead of guiding trial, it will only serve the purpose of delaying trial”. Senior advocate Sanders Sethi, who also appeared for Jaitley, contended that “no one can defame someone on the touchstone of freedom of speech”. The high court had on July 12 last year framed issues against Kejriwal and others in the matter, notwithstanding their claim that they had not made any defamatory statement against him in the DDCA case. Some of the issues framed by the court include whether Jaitley was entitled to any damage for the alleged defamatory statements made by AAP leaders and what should be the amount. Whether the statements which are in public domain are actionable or not, was also one of the issues. Apart from the civil suit, Kejriwal and the five AAP leaders are facing a criminal defamation case proceedings.

NEW DELHI, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea seeking details of bank accounts, tax returns and other financial records of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Jaitley has filed a defamation case against Kejriwal. The high court said that Kejriwal’s plea, which also sought the bank statements of Jaitley’s family members and companies in which he or they had over 10 per cent shareholding, was a “fishing or roving enquiry” and did not have any merit. Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw also dismissed Kejriwal’s plea seeking removal of certain portions of Jaitley’s evidence claiming they were not there in the pleadings and replication of the BJP leader. Advocate Anupam Srivastava, appearing for Kejriwal, said they intended to appeal against the order. Jaitley had filed the defamation suit in 2015 seeking Rs 10 crore damages from Kejriwal, Raghav Chadha, Kumar Vishwas, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh and Deepak Bajpai. The AAP leaders had allegedly attacked Jaitley and his family members in various fora, including social media, over alleged irregularities and financial bungling in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). Jaitley was the president of DDCA for about 13 years till 2013. He has already denied all the allegations.

High command models
W
hat NPF leaders, especially chief ministers both past and present, have been suggesting is that the party (NPF) does not have a high command like other parties, notably the Congress. The NPF leaders claim that their ‘high command’ is the people whose voice directs the party. The reference to the high command was used to hit out at the Congress especially during the reign of the UPA when there were issues about the state Congress over corruption and etc. The NPF leaders want to make people believe that they are its high command. The high command culture has been the epitome of the Congress party and without which, nothing moves. In practical reality, the Congress high command is the sanctum sanctorum of a coterie considered to be very close to the party boss and also the hive of top sycophants who, in the name and on behalf, of the top boss, determine the course of politics. As it is, the Congress high command is supposed to be located at No.10 Janpath. Those who want to approach the Congress high command know, that ultimately only Rahul and Sonia matter and nobody else. While trying to get appointments, the coterie of Congress sycophants decide who can and who cannot meet their chief. In this regard, the approach to the Congress high command (motherson duo) is well established. The BJP also has it high command a.k.a. BJP central and comprises of the party president Amit Shah and several other high ranking RSS functionaries. The BJP central headquarters is located at 11, Ashoka Road. Unlike the Congress high command, the BJP high command has another higher command- the PM with Amit Shah and Rajnath. If the issue is beyond party politics then it is dealt with by the PM and his close aides such as the NSA and other officials. It used to be joked that the highest command of the BJP is located in Nagpur. Now that the NPF has been insisting that it has no high command; perhaps the truth lies somewhere. For instance, over the past two years, the NPF government rather than the party, appears to have applied the policy of ‘equidistance’ to a closer level with regard to the BJP. On political decisions such as trust vote or election of DAN leader the BJP central has played its role and which were evident in 2015 and recently with regard to leadership issue within the NPF. Thus, while in theory the NPF claims it does not have nor believe in high command, yet in practice, its leaders rush to Delhi for consultations. Coming to the voice of the people as being their high command, NPF leaders have hardly given any notice during the over two decades. Did the party hear and respond to the voices of the people crying for development, salaries, roads, electricity, power, jobs through normal routes and not backdoor, rooting out corrupt elements whose nefarious activities have deprived people of their due etc?. Even as recently when the entire state groaned under the mass unrest, precipitated by the government’s mishandling of ULB election issue and the demand of the public for moral responsibility; the NPF-led government went to Delhi for SoS. Well having a high command is neither a sin nor a virtue and so making much of it does not make any party better or worse.
DailyDevotion The Piercing Question Do you love Me? —John 21:17 Peter’s response to this piercing question is considerably different from the bold defiance he exhibited only a few days before when he declared, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” (Matthew 26:35; also see Matthew 26:33-34). Our natural individuality, or our natural self, boldly speaks out and declares its feelings. But the true love within our inner spiritual self can be discovered only by experiencing the hurt of this question of Jesus Christ. Peter loved Jesus in the way any natural man loves a good person. Yet that is nothing but emotional love. It may reach deeply into our natural self, but it never penetrates to the spirit of a person. True love never simply declares itself. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men [that is, confesses his love by everything he does, not merely by his words], him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God” (Luke 12:8). Unless we are experiencing the hurt of facing every deception about ourselves, we have hindered the work of the Word of God in our lives. The Word of God inflicts hurt on us more than sin ever could, because sin dulls our senses. But this question of the Lord intensifies our sensitivities to the point that this hurt produced by Jesus is the most exquisite pain conceivable. It hurts not only on the natural level, but also on the deeper spiritual level. “For the Word of God is living and powerful…, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit…”— to the point that no deception can remain (Hebrews 4:12). When the Lord asks us this question, it is impossible to think and respond properly, because when the Lord speaks directly to us, the pain is too intense. It causes such a tremendous hurt that any part of our life which may be out of line with His will can feel the pain. There is never any mistaking the pain of the Lord’s Word by His children, but the moment that pain is felt is the very moment at which God reveals His truth to us.

HE good news from the India-Pakistan boundary is that it is calm. Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar has said in an interview that “the temperature has come down on the border.” This could mean that India and Pakistan seem to be settling down to a relationship which was expected 70 years ago when partition took place. If this is the case, both countries should cut down on the defence expenditure. We have not introduced the real cut which, at present, is only marginal. Unfortunately, the defence minister’s statement of “India much better armed than before” indicates how much we are still spending on the defence. Pakistan, too, has not made any significant reduction in its defence expenditure. This reminds me of cold war era when America made the Soviet Union to spend most of its resources on the defence. The result was that there was very little left for schools, hospitals and people’s councils. This led to the disinte-

gration of the Soviet Union and the country got divided into several parts. For example, Ukraine became independent. The Soviet President Vladimir Putin has said many a time that Ukraine is part of Russia. But the independence movement belies his statement. Most of the Russian troops are posted on that front. The effect on Pakistan has been the dilution of whatever democracy exists there. Now the new Army chief is superior to the elected Prime Minister. The pictures that show Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also depicts that the person in khaki is the real boss. The Pakistan Prime Minister has accepted the arrangement. Islamabad’s worry is that the Taliban are using the soil of Afghanistan to attack Pakistan. Islamabad is no longer safe. Every second day, one incident of bombing or the other takes place in Pakistan, killing several innocent people. There has been exodus from the secure Islamabad to other parts of
Pakistan. Thanks to UN pressure, China has agreed to declare Hafiz Saeed as a terrorist. Pakistan’s defence minister Khawaza Asif has admitted that Pakistan faces danger from terrorists like Saeed who is now under house Kuldip arrest. This has been a sham so far but the number at the UN Security Council was predominantly for declaring him as a terrorist. Now Islamabad has finally realized that Harif Saeed is linked with militancy in some way but it is to be seen how long Islamabad can keep him under house arrest. In fact, in 2008 the mastermind of Mumbai attacks was placed under house arrest but was freed by a court in 2009. The question before all of us is whether we should read too much into Pakistan’s arrest or take defence minister Asif ’s statement seriously? The observers in Pakistan are well aware that the action against the Lashkar-
e-Taiba chief is not a new step or the most serious measure taken against him over the past two decades. Since 2001, the LeT chief has been in and out of detention at least on five occasions. If, indeed, Pakistan is too serious about the UN list, acNayar tion against Saeed should have been initiated in 2008 itself when he and Jammat-ud-Dawa were put on the UN list of terrorists. The recent action seems to have been timed for the Financial Action Task Force’s meeting to be held in Paris where the Pakistan’s terror funding record is likely to come up. Even otherwise, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif must be worried with the decision of US President Donald Trump who has banned travel from seven Muslim countries. For Pakistan, its nationals will be given visa only after a close scrutiny. Muslims living in America are a worried lot because they could also be sent out
if the President decides to include them on the banned list of Muslim countries. In the case of Indian Muslims, there is no apparent danger but the immigration officials may think different and tar them with the same brush. There are sad occasions when top Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan was stripped and the Indian embassy had to intervene to get his entry into the US. I, too, had a tough time some years ago while entering the US from the west coast. I had a diplomatic passport but still they insisted on searching me bodily. The immigration official explained that most of my visas stamped on the passport were to Pakistan and Bangladesh. He could not make out why I should be often visiting these countries. I wish New Delhi has picked up the thread from where it had left off when Nawaz Sharif met Prime Minister Narendra Modi the last time in China. They were reported to have a positive dialogue. But things have

People movement is a long awaited dream In our christian land
T
he recent incidents that had taken place in Nagaland uniquely gave birth to the Joint Co-ordination Committee (JCC) and Nagaland Tribes Action Committee (NTAC); this shook the entire State as tsunami did in Southern hemisphere. JCC in their acknowledgement column stated in Nagaland Post P.9., dated 26th February, “The people of Nagaland had firmly stood united in protecting our rights, upholding the values and aspirations of the Naga people which has gone into the history through this People Movement.” Truly Nagaland has been anxiously longing for such kind of “People Movement” however who will be free from Politics, free from Corruption and free from any kind of Bribery. People in Nagaland should have had initiated for a People Movement like JCC long ago by following the model of South Korea, where people movement had set their focus on clean election and removal of the rampant corruptions. “People Movement” that Nagaland look for should commit toward the welfare of the merging younger generation. ABAM Social concern group stated in Nagaland Post P.8., dated 27th February, “The long practices of malpractice and unfair means during election which destroyed even spiritual standard of the Christians for decades. ABAM has also decided to publish and distribute a booklet on Clean Election and also provide pledge cards for interested individuals.” Their concern is to set a “People Movement” for a Christ centered purpose. Every tribe should come forward like Ao Tribe and together carry the voice of the people of Nagaland in order to bring a significant transformation in our Christian land. If we want a better Nagaland and prosperous future generation, then every citizen of Nagaland should whole heartedly come forward and form a “New
T
People Movement” alike JCC. By doing this, we can wipe away the tears of the people of Nagaland. Let us all pray to the Almighty God that He may give us a “New God centered People Movement” to revive Nagaland in every way possible. Now let us see how Korean People Movement brought transformation in their Country. As we trace back the background of South Korea, she was colonized by Japan from 1910-1945. Soon after her liberation from the Japanese rule, “the Korean war” broke out between North Korea and South Korea from 1950-1953 that badly damaged the country economically and hence, South Korea was declared as one of the poorest countries in the world till 1970. Till then, the South Koreans lived in poverty and in economic crises. South Korea started to develop only after 1970 and the reality behind this tremendous development was because of two reasons: 1. The Church in South Korea, especially the dedicated elderly women spent the whole night in prayer fervently in 1953. This genuine prayer gave birth to transformation and brought the developments in the Korean peninsula. 2. Young men and women arose, fully determined to work hard tirelessly to develop their Country and because of this, now the South Korea became one of the most developed and richest Countries in the whole world. It is very true that prayers pave the way for development and transformation in the society. The Koreans focused on, “help from God” and God gave them development and revived their land. As the Country developed and prospered through prayers, they broadened their mindset and focused on the overall transformations including the General Election to elect the right leaders. Till 1980, the South Korea Election was similar to that of the
Nagaland General Election where corruption was so much prevalent. But in 1986, the College Youths, Church leaders and social leaders joined together to reform the system of Election from corruption filled to fair, transparent and corruption free. They began to realize that if they receive Black money from their candidate then their country’s Economy and the Democracy will collapse and there will be no developments. With this firm conviction, they formed the People Movement and eventually all the people supported the Movement. Later on, the Politicians also agreed with the stand of the People movement. The Reformation took place in the year 2002 where the Government of South Korea passed the Resolution in the Parliament and made a Rule “We will make our Election clean.”The Government of South Korea ordered that: 1. If any person report to the Government about the corruption, he/she will be awarded Rs. 20,00000/- (twenty lacs). The guilty person will pay the same amount of what he had received from the candidate fifty times as penalty (that means if a public receive Rs. 1000/- from the Candidate than he must pay to Government Rs. 1000/fifty times i.e; Rs. 50,000/-) heavy penalty. But the Candidate who has given Money to the public will be summoned by the Court and immediately be debarred from contesting and will be imprisoned. 2. If the Candidate open the Election Mess or even offer a plate of Rice or a cup of Tea to the Public for the motive of Election wave, then a Public who ate the food or take the tea at the mercy of his Candidate, the accused will pay fifty times of what he has taken from the Candidate and also the Candidate will immediately be debarred from contesting and will be imprisoned. Hence, during the Election the
Candidate cannot buy any person because the punishment is very high and the Korean people elect the right candidate by using their rightful franchise in order to rule over them and for their Country’s development. There is no corruption in the Korean Government and the Government’s Money is utilized faithfully only for the Development of the Country. This People Movement eradicated the corruption and today the Korean enjoys the developments and prosperity in their Country. Let this atmosphere prevail in the Land of Nagaland, where the people of Nagaland would use their franchise to elect their right Candidate for the development and prosperity of Nagaland a beautiful Land filled with beautiful people. The Korean economy was collapsed because of the Wars but Nagaland economy is collapsed because of the Corrupted Leaders. The Korean Church has given birth to the Country of fair Election through which the development and prosperity follows and this was the result of the prayers. As a senior Citizen of Nagaland, I appeal to all the Nagaland Christians to have Faith like the Koreans and pray fervently for the transformation of Nagaland prevailing situation. The College Students, Church Leaders, Young peoples who are zealous for a better Nagaland, energetic for a change and burdened for our dear land Nagaland must come together and form the “People Movement” then sooner we will see our Nagaland transformed and the Development will take place everywhere and Nagaland become the beautiful State like South Korea which we will truly see “New beautiful Nagaland” with our own eyes. IMPOSSIBLE? BIG NO! POSSIBLE IN CHRIST. Rev. Dr. Vikheshe Chishi, Founder & Principal, Withee Bible College, Dimapur
Exposing the truth we already know
his expose is for all the concerned Nagas and particularly the young generations that our thinking and perspective should be ahead of the present Naga society. If asked ‘why’ then the answer is simple, the system in our society is backward and more ‘stone age’ like. When we sell our vote to a candidate for a few thousand rupees then eventually he’ll try to recover his capital period. The money he had spent to buy votes and more will be obviously financed back from the state fund which only means no better roads, public facilities, development for another five years. This is a simple logic and we need to start grasping reality if we really want to see a change. When a bureaucrat “without an ounce of shame” tucks away public funds into his bank account, you see, that is not supposed to happen. The hours he had studied to get through the NPSC Prelim exam (and then backdoor appointment), the reward for his hard work is the 30k and annually increasing salary plus vehicles and other incentives.
We have a democratic government in our state and it is nothing more than a ‘social contract’ between the government and the citizens. Thus the citizens shall abide the law whereas the govt. officials would serve the citizens by the same. And nowhere in the constitution is it written for the government officials to take the public funds into their own pocket which is eminent on our state (like its their privilege because they have done the hard part, studying). Today, in our fight against corruption, for underdevelopment of our state, we are not asking the govt. officials to develop Nagaland from their salary or even a single penny that belongs to them. We are asking them to give us only that which rightfully belongs to the people, nothing more. But since our system is ignorant because our elders were less educated to understand the procedures by which a govt. should function, even today we are letting corruption happen right under our nose. Corruption is an overrated practice in the developed countries because they know that it only slows down their growth pace
while other countries progresses further in the global scale. And since they are civilized and smart they only work hard to further develop their own country or state, preparing themselves from the mystery of the future. But it is not so in Nagaland. Our officials here tries to compete among each other in terms of their bank accounts and assets when they should be competing with say Assam, Sikkim and other states and do their part in progressing Nagaland ahead of the other states. The ‘United States of America’ are trying to put man on Mars (the Planet) in the coming decades where as, well you all know where we are! It is time to stop kidding around (because our life is not a joke) and start doing things systematically as per the constitution. So we appeal to the young people to no longer be a slave of our traditional ignorant system and strive for a rational society. K. Chishi, Press secretary Liberal Democratic Party of Nagaland (Media Cell), ldpnagaland@gmail.com
not moved further because of New Delhi asked Islamabad to ensure that the Pakistani soil would not be used by the terrorists. But then incidents like Uri and Pathankot attacks have falsified hopes. Now that Pakistan has detained Hafiz Saeed and Defence Minister Asif ’s admission of the dangers from terrorists like the LeT chief, the dialogue can probably resume between the two countries. To go forward, India may have to resile its position that it would have no talks unless there was a foolproof guarantee on curbs against terrorists’ operation from their soil. Probably, India may wait and watch for a while before moving ahead. Even Israel has wished it. Nevertheless, it is in the interest of both India and Pakistan to sit across and thrash out the issues. Pakistan, on its part, should put the Kashmir issue on the backburner for the time being. They should, instead, address the immediate problems of poverty, hunger and unemployment.

When the British were in our country, they name our land as the Naga Hills. The N.N.C renamed it as Nagaland. 2. The British called our organization as Naga club during their stay in our land. The NNC called the Naga organizations as NNC. Naga national Council (NNC) passed many resolutions for the benefits of the Nagas , but here are a few points which the public should know. 1. Any plot of land of the Nagas be it public, clans or individuals shall not be sold to foreigners (Indians). 2. For availing bank loans, plot of lands shall not be used as security. Anyone violating the resolution, the said plot of land shall remain as the property of the Naga public and the principle amount shall not paid back to the lender. Because of all these reasons till today plot of lands were not being sold to outsiders and not used as security. 3. For the benefit of the future generation and that let not any bad thing befall on our generation Naga women are forbidden to marry Indians. My humble request is that today’s NNC leaders should educate the younger generations about the resolutions passed by the Nagas in the name of NNC. Reader’s Post
Sir,
Prime minister is father of the country
While a Prime Minister is from a political party, by virtue of his being the Prime Minister, he is looked upon as the father of the country and he is expected to be above the spirit of narrow partisanship as he is to say” my country, my people” wherever he goes. During his historic visit to Manipur, being the head of the country, he has to rebuke the leaders of the state for their failures and to commend them for their successes if any. But according to his speeches he is not above a party worker of BJP. The ongoing economic blockade is for a cause. If it can be resolved when BJP takes over the rule, why not the grievances of the Nagas is looked into and get it resolved even before election? The Prime Minister said that Manipur is not mentioned in the Framework Agreement. Word might not be mentioned but the leader of the Nagas who is the signatory is a Naga from Manipur area. Regarding Naga integration, integration of all contiguous areas inhabited by the Nagas enshrined in the 16 points Agreement in 1959 has been acceded by the GoI. According to Morung Express 25.2.17, NSCN (I-M) said that the GoI has candidly proclaimed integration the legitimate right of the Nagas. So the question of “ not a single word is mentioned in the Framework Agreement” does not arise. Prime Minister and the Home Minister are expected to be realistic and genuine in any situation. Mumbai, Mar 1 (PTI): Rupee depreciated by 13 paise to 66.82 against the US dollar in early trade today on increased demand for the dollar from importers. Dealers attributed the rupee’s fall to increased demand for the US currency and the dollar’s strength against some currencies overseas but a higher opening of the domestic equity market on better-than-expected GDP growth in October-December quarter, capped the losses. The rupee had gained 2 paise to close at 66.69 in an extremely thin and lethargic trade yesterday owing to stray dollar selling form banks and exporters.

Tyagi will now need to balance multiple constituencies such as traders, fund managers and the Reserve Bank of India to accomplish his objectives But those who have worked with him believe that he brings the right skill and personality to the job. Continuing to develop and shore up confidence in commodity derivatives will likely be among his top priorities after exchange National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) was charged with fraud after taking in trades without providing adequate settlements or collateral. Tyagi was instrumental in merging then standalone regulator Forward Markets Commission with SEBI last year, and will oversee the new entity as India seeks to attract more institutional investors. “That was his pet project,” said the head of futures trading at a major foreign lender. “We are expecting that he will focus on the commodity market and bring in a number of regulatory changes in that area.” Tyagi will also be expected to spearhead reforms of India’s nascent corporate bond market. New Delhi, Mar 1 (Agencies): Finance ministry official Ajay Tyagi took over as Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman on Wednesday with two likely priorities - developing the country’s commodity and corporate bond markets and shoring up corporate governance. Tyagi, 58, will also inherit from outgoing SEBI Chairman U.K. Sinha critical regulatory decisions, including whether to penalise India’s largest exchange, National Stock Exchange, over potential trading violations and whether to adopt tougher rules against highfrequency traders. Tyagi has already been closely involved with the capital markets regulator, having served as additional secretary at the finance ministry’s economic affairs department since 2014, the same unit that oversees SEBI. He inherits an organisation that has become bigger much more muscular under Sinha, who served for six years, the secondlongest term by any SEBI Chairman.
NEW DELHI, Mar 1 (PTI): The government has notified the law that makes holding of more than 10 scrapped notes punishable with a minimum fine of Rs 10,000. The Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017, was passed by Parliament last month with a view to eliminating the “possibility of running a parallel economy” using the old Rs 500/1,000 notes that have been demonetised. The law, signed by President Pranab Mukherjee on February 27, also provides for a minimum fine Rs 50,000 for false declaration by persons who were abroad during the demonetisation period (November 9-December 30, 2016) and given time to deposit such scrapped notes with RBI till March 31. With the law coming into force, possession of more than 10 pieces of the old notes by individuals and more than 25 pieces for study, research or numismatics purpose will be a criminal offence, attracting fine of Rs 10,000 or five times the cash held, whichever is higher.

A traditionally Muslim group, many Uighurs complain of cultural and religious repression and discrimination by China. It appears to be the Islamic State’s “first direct threat” against China, Dr. Michael Clarke, an expert on Xinjiang at the National

The video showed China is now “very firmly a target of jihadist rhetoric,” Clarke said, marking a shift from years past when it rarely figured in statements by global jihadist groups. But Clarke said it also could indicate a possible split among Uighur fighters, as it includes a warning to those fighting with the al Qaeda-aligned Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) in Syria.

the financial prosecutor’s office pushed the case to a higher level Friday, opening a formal judicial inquiry that allows investigating judges to file preliminary charges. Financial Prosecutor Eliane Houlette denied reports that Fillon’s wife Penelope was taken in for questioning Wednesday. Fillon, who won the conservative primary on a platform of tighter security and public spending cuts, initially said he would withdraw from the race if he was charged — but later said he was determined to let the voters judge him instead of investigators. “France is greater than my errors,” he said Wednesday. The alleged fake jobs are especially shocking to many voters because of Fillon’s pledged spending cuts
and his clean-cut image. Investigative weekly Le Canard Enchaine reported that payments were made to Penelope Fillon and two of their five children that totaled more than 1 million euros ($1.1 million) over many years. After a preliminary investigation opened Jan. 25, the financial prosecutor’s office decided Friday to launch a formal judicial inquiry, turning it over to investigating judges who can bring charges or throw the case out. The list of potential charges include misappropriation of public funds, abuse of public funds and influence trafficking. Protesters have been at Fillon’s recent campaign events for the election, in which far-right candidate Marine Le Pen is expected to make a strong showing.

BEIJING, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): Islamic State militants from China’s Uighur ethnic minority have vowed to return home and “shed blood like rivers”, according to a jihadist-tracking firm, in what experts said marked the first IS threat against Chinese targets. The threat came in a half-hour video released Monday by a division of the Islamic State in western Iraq and featuring militants from China’s Uighur ethnic group, said the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which analysed the footage. China has for years blamed exiled Uighur “separatists” for a series of violent attacks in its western Xinjiang region -- the Uighur homeland -- and warned of the potential for militants to link up with global jihadist groups. In the video, a Uighur fighter issued the threat against China just before executing an alleged infor-
PARIS, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): French conservative candidate Francois Fillon is refusing to quit the presidential race despite receiving a summons Wednesday to face charges of faking parliamentary jobs for his family. Calling the investigation a “political assassination,” Fillon called on his supporters to “resist” and said he would leave it up to voters to decide his fate. Once a front-runner in the race for the April-May tworound election, Fillon’s chances have slipped since the probe was opened in January. Fillon abruptly cancelled a campaign stop Wednesday after receiving the legal summons, prompting media speculation that he would quit the race. “I will not surrender,” he told reporters at his headquarters later. “I will not withdraw.” Fillon denied all allegations and said legal procedure was not properly followed in the probe, which he called unprecedented and unacceptable during a presidential election campaign. He said he was summoned for questioning March 15 “with the goal of being given preliminary charges.” The court summons was widely expected after

KUALA LUMPUR, MAR 1 (IANS): Two Asian women arrested on suspicion of assassinating the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un were indicted here on Wednesday, prosecutors said. Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, 29, were officially charged with murder for allegedly smearing VX nerve agent, a banned chemical weapon, on the face of Kim Jong-nam at the Kuala Lumpur airport on February 13. Kim was awaiting a flight to Macau. Aisyah and Huong appeared at a court surrounded by dozens of armed police officers and hundreds of reporters. It was their first public appearance after they were arrested last month, Yonhap reported. During the hour-long court procedure, both denied murdering the victim intentionally, saying they thought it was a prank, not an actual chemical attack. The police and the prosecution, however, rebutted, saying the women rehearsed the attack and were aware of the toxicity of the substance they were handling. The two suspects can be sentenced to death, if convicted of the allegations, according to the prosecutors. The next court date is April 13.

WASHINGTON, MAR 1 (AP): President Donald Trump’s new immigration order will remove Iraq from the list of countries whose citizens face a temporary US travel ban, US officials have said, citing the latest draft in circulation. Trump is expected to sign the executive order in the coming days. Four officials told The Associated Press that the decision followed pressure from the Pentagon and State Department, which had urged the White House to reconsider Iraq’s inclusion given its key role in fighting the Islamic State group. Citizens of six other predominantly Muslim countries Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen will remain on the travel ban list, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorised to discuss the order before it is signed. Those bans are effective for 90 days. The new order includes other changes as well. The officials said the 12-page document no longer singles out Syrian refugees for an indefinite ban and instead includes them as part of a general, 120day suspension of new refugee admissions.

Trump softens stand on immigration
WASHINGTON, MAR 1 (PTI): US President Donald Trump today called for adopting a merit-based immigration system that could benefit high-tech professionals from countries like India, modifying his hard-line campaign rhetoric with a promise to revive the ‘American spirit’. Trump, during his first address to Congress, noted that “nations around the world, like Canada, Australia and many others have a merit-based immigration system”. He said that such a system will save countless dollars and raise workers’ wages. Trump introduced the idea of a merit-based immigration system after invoking the memory and words of late president Abraham Lincoln, saying, “Lincoln was right — and it is time we heeded his words.” “Switching away from this current system of lowerskilled immigration, and instead adopting a merit-based

Rihanna give inspiring speech after accepting Harvard award Happy songs helps recall positive memories
R
ihanna delivered a moving speech last night (February 28) after accepting an award from Harvard University for her humanitarian efforts, remarking that “you should just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can.” The ‘Anti’ singer was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award from the prestigious US university, which has been awarded to the likes of
Malala Yousafzai, former UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon and Lionel Richie in recent years. Taking to the lectern after being presented with the award by the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, Rihanna opened by joking: “So – I finally made it to Harvard. Never thought I’d be able to say that in my life, but it feels good.” She then moved onto

f you listen to happy or peaceful music, you recall positive memories, whereas if you listen to emotionally scary or sad music, negative memories from your past may spring to mind, says a study. The study, published in the journal Memory & Cognition, detailed how participants accessed autobiographical memories after listening to unknown pieces of music varying in intensity or emotional content. The experiment,
conducted by Signy Sheldon and Julia Donahue of McGill University in Canada, tested how musical retrieval cues that differ on two dimensions of emotion -- valence (positive and negative) and arousal (high and low) -- influence the way that people recall autobiographical memories. A total of 48 participants had 30 seconds to listen to 32 newly composed piano pieces not known to them. The pieces were
grouped into four retrieval cues of music: happy (positive, high arousal), peaceful (positive, low arousal), scary (negative, high arousal) and sad (negative, low arousal). The researchers noted how long it took participants to access a memory, how vivid it was, and the emotions associated with it. Memories were found to be accessed most quickly based on musical cues that were highly arousing and positive in emotion, and could therefore be classified as happy.
Wish I had little bit of Logan’s healing powers: Hugh Jackman
Writer-director James Mangold took the charge of bringing the character and his journey to a conclusion with “Logan”. He previously worked with Jackman on “The Wolverine” in the year 2013. This new “X-Men” film will not just witness the end of Jackman’s character as a mutant superhero, but also for thespian Patrick Stewart as his mentor and father figure in the form of the character Professor Charles Xavier. Both of them were here to promote the film. The film also stars Merchant, Richard E. Grant and 11-year-old Dafne Keen, who plays the role of Jackman’s daughter and young mutant X 23. It opens in theatres worldwide, including in India on March 3, and has been distributed by 20th century Fox.

ugh Jackman, who was in Taipei for the promotion of his film “Logan”, came wearing a dressing after having a sixth basal cell carcinoma cut from his nose, but it seems like the tough phase has not dampened the spirit of the actor. He jokingly said he is in a happy phase inspite of not “healing as much” as he wished he should have. At a press briefing for select media, including IANS here, when Jackman was asked if he ever wished to have the healing powers of “Logan”, he jokingly said pointing towards his nose: “You can see I am not healing as much as I wish I had. I wish I had little bit of Logan’s healing powers.” H oweve r, h e wa s quick to add: “I am happier in general. I am fine and happy. Yes, we become sad and regret in life but nothing to the degree that owns this man (his character in the film). He was a good man. I was always touched with the character. He had a good heart.” “The Wolverine” film saga started 17 years ago. Jackman has appeared as Wolverine in nine of the “X-Men” sagas.

Shanghai SIPG paid $63 million to sign Oscar from Chelsea, while Shanghai Shenhua made 33-year-old Carlos Tevez the highest paid player in the world, offering him reported wages of $765,000 -- double the amount Cristiano Ronaldo earns. But while the capture of big-name and big-money players has created waves around the football world,

The two gover ning bodies want to make golf quicker and played under more simple, consistent and fair rules. Their ideas have been made public for a period

The unassuming Army man shot a total of 230.1, a world record, to finish on top of the podium, while Amanpreet, who was leading for a major part of the final, had to be satisfied with the silver medal after aggregating 226.9.
Hart may not return to Man City, hints Guardiola Manchester, Mar 1 (IANS): Manchester U n i t e d m a n a g e r Pe p Guardiola has hinted that he may not recall England goalkeeper Joe Hart to the club at the end of the season. Guardiola had dropped Hart as the team’s first choice goalkeeper before the start of the current season and brought in Claudio Bravo from FC Barcelona to be replacement. Bravo was later superseded by A r ge n t i n e g o a l k e e p e r Willy Caballero during the season. Hart was loaned out to Italian Serie A outfit Torino FC. The England custodian has expressed his desire to return to the Manchester City line-up, but his dream may well be over as Guardiola said that he is happy with the performance of Bravo and Caballero.
Iran’s Va h i d Golkhandan took away the bronze with a score of 208.0 at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range. The 29-year-old Rai was placed sixth at the end of the first two competition series of five shots each with 93.8. At that point Amanpreet was leading the eight-man field with 98.9. The Punjabi shooter then extended his domination with a series of high scores, even as Rai tried to make his way back into contention. A stunning 10.8 in one of the elimination rounds proved to be crucial for Rai, who jumped from sixth to the third position, and knocked out Kazakhstan’s renowned marksman Vladimir Issachenk with a 10.5.
Rai kept up the tempo with a 10.4 and 10.0, while Amanpreet, after a fine start in his career’s first World Cup final, had a meltdown. After upstaging Golkhandan, Rai comfortably got the better of Amanpreet in the gold medal round, finishing the event with an excellent 10.5 to lay his claim on the top prize. “It’s amazing to win this gold medal here during the first combined World Cup held here in India, in front of my supporters. It’s a great honour and a true emotion to see the Indian flag flying high,” said Rai. “I didn’t have a perfect start today, but I guess that’s the fun of the sport. I like it that way, uncertainty is part of the game, otherwise there is no excitement. I climbed into the lead shot after shot and I think it was a nice match,” he said. “I closed the 2016 season with a World Cup Final silver, and I always dreamt about starting 2017 in the best way here in India. I wanted our flag to fly high. “I am planning to compete in all World Cup stages this year. We have ISSF World Cup in Munich ahead of us, and I will work to correct a few things before flying there. I am looking forward to the rest of the season,” Rai signed off.

Indian Boxing League likely Guptill’s ton gives NZ 7-wicket win over SA by 2017-end: BFI chief
N ew D elhi , M ar 1 ( I A N S ) : Fo l l ow i n g successful conclusion of the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) 71st commission meeting here, Boxing Federation of India (BFI) President Ajay Singh on Wednesday announced that the first ever franchisebased Indian Boxing League (IBL) will most likely be held by the end of the year. Addressing the media, Singh also announced that India is planning to host one major tournament every year in the run-up to 2020 Tokyo Olympics, starting with the women’s Youth World Championships in November 2017. “We will be starting our own boxing league later this year and it will be a great opportunity for our boxers with respect to finances and exposure,” Singh said.
“The women’s Youth World Championships will be a great opportunity for the Indian boxers as they will be able to compete in such a huge event and it will also help in our preparations for Tokyo 2020,” he added. “This is just the beginning of our plans as we wish to host one major event every year and our boxers will also be taking part in the 2017 World Series Boxing competition.” This was the first time that the AIBA commissions meeting was held in India and the chairpersons from 11 commissions of AIBA attended the event to discuss the future of world boxing. Thanking AIBA President Wu Ching-kuo for having faith in his leadership, Singh said the commissions meeting was just the start of a long innings with the world
governing body. “The first step was the AIBA Commissions meeting where we projected a young vibrant India ready to take on the boxers from any part of the globe. Largely because of his (Dr Wu’s) efforts and guidance that we could hold elections last year that was supervised by AIBA and conducted under Indian law. The AIBA President, who was also present at the conference, said the situation in India has improved since BFI’s formation and added that India has the potential to become a superpower in boxing. “What happened with the associations was quite unfortunate. But, it is all behind us now and I believe that India is capable of producing boxers who can do well on the international stage,” Wu said.
Hamilton, Mar 1 (IANS): Opener Martin Guptill’s blistering unbeaten 180 off 138 deliveries helped New Zealand thrash South Africa by seven wickets at the Seddon Park here on Wednesday and set up a series-decider in the fifth and final cricket One-day International (ODI) in Auckland on Saturday. Chasing a decent 280, Guptill dominated a thirdwicket stand of 180 with Ross Taylor who made 66 off 97 deliveries, the joint second-highest for the Kiwis and highest for any wicket against the Proteas. Guptill’s 12th ODI centur y came from 82 deliveries after being saved by the Decision Review System (DRS) having been given leg before to Dwaine Pretorius on 62. He finished with 11 sixes -- at least three of them disappearing out of the ground -- and now holds the three highest innings for New Zealand in

Guptill, who sped to his 50 off 38 deliveries and took another 44 to reach the three figures, added 72 runs for the second wicket with skipper Kane Williamson (21) as New Zealand got themselves ahead of the

Murray advances in Dubai c’ship DUBAI, MAR 1 (AGENCIES): Andy Murray may be coming off a bout of shingles, but he looked in good shape during a 6-4, 6-1 first round victory over Malik Jaziri at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Tuesday. The top-ranked Murray was playing his first match since being upset by Mischa Zverev in the Australian Open fourth round last month. Murray said that his mother-in-law was the first to suggest he had shingles, which a doctor confirmed the next day. “I had a little bit of a rash basically like on my bum `round to kind of my stomach, and it wasn’t, like, terrible,” Murray said. “I didn’t think much of it at the beginning, and then it was actually my wife’s mum, we were having dinner, and I was, like, `This is really irritating. She was, like, `Pull your pants down. Show me. It might be shingles.” Jaziri took a brief 2-1 lead with a service break
in the first set, but that would be the only time the Tunisian had any control over Tuesday’s match. “Obviously, the second set was obviously a bit easier,” Murray said. “First set, especially the beginning, was tough. “I have never hit with him or played against him before. It took a little bit of time to get used to his game.” The only other unexpected moment in the match came when Murray was leading 6-4, 3-1, 0-40. Jaziri said he was feeling light-headed and asked for the physiotherapist to come to the court. After his pulse was checked, Jaziri returned to the court and played out the match. U n l i k e M u r r a y, defending champion Stan Wawrinka didn’t survive the first round, falling to Damir Dzhumur 7-6 (4), 6-3. It was third-ranked Wawrinka’s first match since bowing out of the Australian Open to Swiss countryman Roger Federer in the semifinals.
“I think I start well, but it was tough match,” Wawrinka said. “I think after coming back one month out, I had to recover from the injury. Wawrinka was nursing a right knee injury when he left the Australian Open and only started to have regular practice sessions a week ago. “The positive of the tournament here is that the knee is feeling good now,” Wawrinka said. “I don’t have any pain. I need to still be really careful, but that was the only positive of today.” Wawrinka started the match very quickly, racing to a 4-1 lead in the first set. “Three games in, like, six, seven minutes, he was playing outstanding there,” Dzhumur said. “Was just hitting every ball. I couldn’t even touch the ball.” That was the point when Wawrinka slowed down and showed signs of becoming tentative as the Bosnian settled into the match.
