KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, MAR 20 (NPN): In a major political development, the National People’s Party (NPP) which won two seats at its maiden foray in Nagaland, exited from the state assembly when both its legislators- Imnatiba Jamir (13-Arkakong constituency) and Khumo Khiamniungan (57-Thonoknyu constituency)- decided to merge with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), while the party vice president P. Chalukumba also resigned from the post and primary membership of the party. The two NPP legislators and the party vice president resigned in protest against the party’s decision to set up a candidate for the forthcoming by-election to the 26-Aonglenden constituency scheduled simultaneously with the Lok Sabha poll on April 11, 2019. Adviser Industries & Commerce and NIDC, Imnatiba Jamir has confirmed to Nagaland Post, that he and his other colleagueadviser of Fisheries, Evolution, Economics and Statistics L. Khumo Kh-

iamniungan- have decided to join the NDPP in order to strengthen the hands of People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) under chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister Y. Patton. Imnatiba said they took the decision since it was untenable to continue in the party when NPP decided to field a candidate against the PDA consensus candidate for the by-election to the 26 Aonglenden constituency. Imnatiba also said it would have been humiliating and unbecoming on their part to campaign for

the PDA when their own party set up a candidate against the PDA consensus candidate. He said both had cautioned the party organisation not to go against the PDA candidate but regretted that the party ignored its own party legislators. Imnatiba also said that when NPP legislators on March 19 at launch of the PDA campaign in Dimapur, had endorsed the PDA consensus candidate for both the Lok Sabha and by election, the party instead bypassed them by deciding to field NPP candidate for the by-poll.

No nomination filed for Lok Sabha, by-election on day-3 DIMAPUR, MAR 20 (NPN): No nominations have been filed on the third day Wednesday for the Nagaland Lok sabha seat and 26-Aonglenden assembly constituency by-election for which the voting will be held on April 11 simultaneously, state deputy chief electoral officer, Awa Lorin stated. The last date for filing of nomination for both Lok Sabha seat and by-election is March 25, scrutiny of nominations is on March 26, last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 28, date of polls and by-poll is April 11, counting of votes is on May 23 and the date before which the entire election and by-election process should be completed is May 27. As on March 20, the Lok Sabha election is likely to witness a straight fight between NDPP-PDA and Congress. However, sources

said that NPF is also geared to set up a candidate. The announcement may be made on March 23, sources added. While for the by-election, it is likely to be a threecornered contest between NDPP-PDA, Congress and NPF. Though NPP is mulling to field a candidate, it was yet to formally make the announcement. Meanwhile, CEO Nagaland on Wednesday released a video on ‘clean election anthem 2019’. According to DIPR, the video, including several others have been uploaded on all the social media sites of the Chief Electoral Officer Nagaland. It can also be viewed on Facebook- Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland; Instagram- ceonagalanditcell.com; Twitter-Chief Electoral Off; Youtube- CEO Election Nagaland; Websiteceo.nagaland.gov.in.

13 tribe hohos, NNPGs to work together

He said it was not a time for any so-called “friendly fight” between NDPP and NPP as it would only bring ridicule on the PDA coalition. Imnatiba said as upcoming leaders, both he and Khumo did not want to move out of NPP but that the decision was forced upon them when they were made to feel unwanted because their party totally ignored their views. With the ‘merger’ of the two, the NDPP has received a shot in the arm as its tally has gone up to 19 in the 60-member house whose effective strength was reduced to 59 following the demise of sitting NDPP legislator of 26 Aonglenden constituency. Days ahead of the launching of the PDA election campaign in Dimapur, there were speculations about a rift between the two NPP legislators and the state unit over fielding a candidate against the PDA. NPP vice president resigns: State NPP unit vice president and ex-NPP candidate for Koridang A/C, T. Chalukumba Ao,

in a letter to NPP national president Conrad Sangma, expressed dismay that despite being a post-poll partner of the NDPP, NPP has gone against the spirit of camaraderie of the PDA government, by trying to field its candidate for the 26-Aonglenden by-poll. He reminded that the constituent parties of PDA such as - NDPP, BJP, JD(U) and the lone Independent member- had decided to support Tokheho Yepthomi and Sharingain Longkumer as PDA’s consensus candidates for the Lok Sabha and the byelection to 26 Aonglenden Assembly Constituency respectively. However, he said NPP chose to go against the alliance. Chalukumba also pointed out that the two NPP legislators, who are part and parcel of the PDA gover nment, had been functioning smoothly in the interest and welfare of the people of the State. In view of the above events, Chalukumba Ao said he has decided to resign as the vice president of the NPP state unit and also from party membership.

the need of the hour. According to a statement issued by NNPGs WC media cell, the house acknowledged the progress of the political negotiations between WC and Government of India (GoI) and also referred to the latter’s position that a single agreement was on the anvil. On this, the meeting reaffirmed that it was a legitimate aspiration of the Nagas to live together as one. However, taking current political realities into consideration, the meet felt that whatever was honour-

able and acceptable to the Nagas in the present time must be pursued and concluded by the two negotiating parties at the earliest. The meeting was attended by office bearers of Ao Senden, Angami Public Organisation, Chakhesang Public Organisation, Chang Khulie Satchang, Konyak Union, Lotha Hoho, Pochur y Hoho, Phom People’s Council, Rengma Hoho, Khuiamnungam Tribal Council, Sumi Hoho, Yimchunger Tribal Council and Zeliang People’s Organisation.

NEW DELHI, MAR 20 (AGENCIES): Four accused in the Samjhauta Express blast case, including godman Swami Aseemanand, have been acquitted by a court in Panchkula, Haryana. The three other people who have been acquitted are: Lokesh Sharma, Kamal Chauhan and Rajinder Chaudhary. They have been acquitted by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court. The verdict came after NIA special judge Jagdeep Singh dismissed the plea filed by a Pakistani woman for examining eyewitnesses from her country, saying it was “devoid of any merit”. “All the four accused, Naba Kumar Sarkar alias Swami Aseemanand, Lokesh Sharma, Kamal Chauhan and Rajinder Chaudhary have been acquitted by the court,” NIA counsel Rajan Malhotra said. near Panipat in Haryana on February 18, 2007, when the train was on its way to Attari in Amritsar, the last railway station on the Indian side. The blast had ripped apart two coaches of the cross-border train, killing 68, mostly Pakistani nationals and four Indian Railway officials. In July 2010, the probe was handed over to the NIA. After its probe, NIA in 2011 filed a charge sheet against eight persons for their alleged roles in the terror attack. For nearly 12 years, Mohammad Jawid waited for a verdict that could give

justice to his brother and his family, who lost their lives in the 2007 blast. But after a court let off the four accused, including Swami Aseemanand, in the case on Wednesday, Jawid was left distraught. Besides his brother, Shabbir, sister-inlaw Sameena and their three sons -- Shahbaz, Shahreyar, Shahroz -- and daughter Misbah, Jawid lost five more relatives in the blast. “We did not get the justice. The real culprits are still out. This is not a right verdict,” the 37year-old told PTI over the phone from Gaya.

Opposition NPF takes a dig at Rio, Patton IT sets up 24x7 control rooms DIMAPUR, MAR 20 (NPN): Opposition NPF has hit out at the ruling PDA and termed the formal launch of its parliamentary electoral campaign at DDSC Stadium Dimapur on Tuesday as “nothing short of a public display of the two biggest political chameleons in Naga politics, Neiphiu Rio and Yanthungo Patton”. In a hard hitting statement, the opposition party recalled that in 2002, a year before the State Assembly elections of 2003, Rio had deserted Dr SC Jamir, then chief minister of Nagaland, in protest against the book “Bedrock of Naga Society”. Written by Jamir, the book that stated that the 16 Point Agreement was the final solution between the Nagas and Government of India (GoI) was vehemently condemned by Rio at that time. In pursuance to the 16 Point Memorandum submitted to

GOI in July 1960, Article 371(A) was inserted in Part XXI of the Constitution of India by the 13th Amendment Act, 1962 and the State of Nagaland under the Indian Union was created as the 16th State. Article 371(A), which has been the subject of discussion in recent times, is an outcome of the 16 Point Agreement, the party added. NPF pointed out that Rio had recently declared that any Naga talking against Article 371(A) would tantamount to betrayal of the Naga people. He had also asserted that the Nagas were protected by Article 371(A) against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). This was evidently clear by his statement delivered during the Budget Session on February 22, 2019. The opposition party said this double-standard attitude of Rio was highly objectionable as in 2002 he

had resigned as home minister from Jamir’s cabinet in protest against the 16 Point Agreement that gave birth to Article 371 (A) and today he states that the very same Article protects the Nagas even from the CAB. Asserting that it would never forget the grievous agenda of Rio “now or even in the distant future”, the opposition party said he cannot be allowed to mislead the Naga people any further. NPF said the chief minister had even stated that Naga Integration was not possible while also maintaining that any Naga speaking against Article 371(A) was a traitor. As the chief minister’s chair was not permanent, the statement reminded him that marketing the Naga cause at the expense of Naga political issue would not sustain, adding history would never forget him for “marketing” the Naga cause for the chief

minister’s chair. NPF further termed Rio’s dig at NPF on the issue of putting put candidate in the ensuing Lok Sabha election as “nothing but amusement” as it was an internal affair of the party concerned in which he did not have any role to play. “The NPF is capable of handling its own affairs and will bring the matter to the public domain with the right explanation at the right time,” it added. Meanwhile, also hitting out at deputy chief minister Y. Patton, NPF alleged that he was the “camp commander”, not only during the camping at Kaziranga but during every crisis that he had exploited by bargaining for better position. NPF alleged that Patton, who did not bother about progress or development, was rather a champion in corruption and backdoor appointment.
