PM attacked on secrecy of Naga Accord

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Feb 28: All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice-president, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday attacked the prime minister, Narendra Modi, for keeping secret the framework agreement signed between the government of India and NSCN (I-M) on August 3, 2015, saying “no one was made known about the Naga accord.” Addressing a crowded congress rally in Imphal’s Hatta Kangjeibung, the AICC vice-president said even ministers of Modi government were not aware of the details of the framework agreement and accused the Prime Minister of keeping the contents of the agreement secret. He recalled that AICC president Sonia Gandhi was informed over phone about the matter only after the accord was signed. It was the first ever phone call given by the Prime Minister to Sonia Gandhi informing only about entering the agreement but no further detail, Rahul recalled. Soon after Sonia was informed, Rahul said she asked him to contact Ma-

nipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh if he knew about the development. “I contacted Ibobiji immediately. But to utter surprise, he informed me that he had no idea about the development. Modiji is telling lie to the people of the state,” Rahul alleged. “What is there in this prepaid Naga accord, nothing is clear till now. Ibobi didn’t even know about the accord. Prime Minister did not even talk to chief minister Ibobi. No ministers know what is in the accord, everything was in Prime Minister’s mind,” Rahul Gandhi said. He said Congress has been protecting the territo-

rial integrity of Manipur and assured that the party would continue to do so. In the rally organized by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPPC), Rahul Gandhi further took a dig at the Prime Minister accusing him of being involved in corruption even though he declared to end corruption in the country. Rahul alleged that even after more than two and a half years in power at the Centre, BJP-led NDA government has not taken up any developmental works in Manipur so far. Rahul said Modi even failed to keep the promises he had kept

NPRAAF reminds F&CS deptt to cancel backdoor appointments DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) on Tuesday reminded the food and civil supplies (F&CS) department to cancel backdoor appointment of three LDAs. NPRAAF through its information and publicity cell said the department had made official commitment through an official letter to conduct open competition against vacancy of three LDA posts that were filled by three individuals through backdoor appointment dated March 10, 2016 on regular basis. However, NPRAAF said following its intervention the department re-issued office corrigendum vide office order (part-II) No/294, 295, 296 Dated July 18, 2016 making the appointments on contract basis. Reminding that the appointment of the three

would complete one year in a few days time, the NPRAAF has therefore requested the department to immediately process to cancel the appointments and the said posts be requisitioned to departmental board/ NPSC for an open competition. It stated that the competitive exam must be conducted without partiality or favouritism and in all fairness. NPRAAF also stated that F&CS must “scrupulously” adhere to the criteria laid down by the state government dated June 6, 2016 office memorandum (OM) with regard to appointment, which it said was also direction from the High Court. In the event the department failed to keep its official commitment, NPRAAF has cautioned to take “appropriate measures” in the interest of educated unemployed Naga youths.

after coming to power. He pointed out the alleged delay in the setting up National Sport University in Manipur and improvement of NH-37 within 100 days. Instead of taking up developmental works, the Prime Minster was only doing his share of spreading disharmonies amongst various communities in the state during his visit. Rahul added that “RSS wants to enforce their ideology in Manipur.” They wanted to crush history, languages, culture etc. of Manipur. “Congress party won’t let this happen,” he promised.

GST to come into effect from July 1 NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (IANS): Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be implemented from July 1 as all states have agreed on the implementation date, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said on Tuesday. The government plans to get the GST Council’s approval on iGST (integrated GST), cGST (central GST) and sGST (state GST) drafts at its March 4-5 meeting before the second half of the budget session of Parliament begins on March 9. The draft compensation bill was approved in the Council’s February 18 meeting. The draft laws passed by the Council will have to be passed by Parliament. Simultaneously, sGST will have to be passed by state legislatures. The four bills form the enabling laws under the GST constitutional amendment.

State chief minister O Ibobi, deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, MPCC president TN Haokip, Outer Manipur MP T Meinya, ministers and MLAs of Congress and state leaders of the party attended and addressed the rally. Earlier on his way from Imphal Airport to Hatta Kangjeibung, Rahul was greeted by a large number of student activists who formed a human chain on the stretch of the road at Kwakeithel areas, pressing the Centre for disclosing the details of the framework agreement signed with the NSCN(I-M). Meanwhile, with four days left for polling to the first phase and only two days to end the campaign, BJP national leaders are also rushing to the state to take part in election rallies. BJP national president Amit Shah also arrived here today and took part in party rallies at Kangpokpi in Kangpokpi district and Moirang in Bishnupur district. He is scheduled to take part other rallies of the party in other places where polling will go on first phase on March 4.

NPCC asks Zeliang to substantiate allegation

DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) through its media cell has demanded that “deposed chief minister T.R.Zeliang” come clean by naming which political elements did not want solution to the Naga political problem. NPCC also said Zeliang should publicly name those political elements posing hurdles rather than make a vague statement that is detrimental to the overall interest of the Nagas. NPCC said NPF’s “frustration was understandable” given the fact that it had miserably failed on all fronts for the past 14 years of rule. “When our own house is in total disarray owing to the divisive politics of the NPF, it is unwise of NPF leaders to simply accuse others of doing the same. The myopic policy of the NPF has isolated Nagas from all our neighbors with whom we had co existed since time immemorial,” NPCC said. It further reminded NPF that Nagaland has had enough of their rhetoric on finding political settlement

he stepped down for the sake of peace. With regard to issues faced by the hill tribes of Manipur, Zeliang lamented about absence of a common platform to address the issues of the hill areas. He felt the NPF could be the platform by citing three candidates from the Kuki community who were issued NPF tickets. “The NPF does not stand for the Naga tribals alone, but for all the tribes and communities of the hill areas of Manipur,’ he said. Hitting at national parties for the high command culture, he said “people have realised about the difficulties of serving the constituents by remaining in national parties because they have to go by the decisions of their party high command.” He said the NPF does not have any high command but that people were the party’s high command and for which the party listened to the wishes and aspirations of the common people. Zeliang also pointed out that unlike NPF, “national parties do not go by the aspirations of the common people and decisions are taken from Delhi, far from these remote corners of the country.” (Cont’d on p-8)

Ko lkat a , F eb 2 8 (IANS): Delay in receiving lab equipment due to remoteness, corruption in fund management, and lack of jobs for returnee scientists and inadequate infrastructure are some of the major hurdles faced by researchers in northeast region (NER) who demand good governance to promote science and technology in its eight states. An up-coming researcher from Shillong lamented that a tiring and time-consuming nature of a trip to the labs in NER, mostly through small, winding and bad roads deters visitors, including scientists. Biotechnologist from Assam deplored the dearth of quality manpower in adequate numbers. Despite ongoing efforts by the Centre, there are gaping holes when it comes to R&D funding, corruption and mismanagement, they feel. They pitched for improving primary and secondary education in rural areas, building more research centres, promotion of indigenous knowledge and setting up more research centres in rural NE.

Nagaland gets top IT, e-governance state award DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): Nagaland has been awarded as the top performing State from amongst the Northeastern States in the field of IT and e-Governance sector by Computer Society of India (CSI)-Nihilent. The award was received by Nagaland chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu in the presence of minister, IT&C P. Paiwang Konyak and chief secretary, Pankaj Kumar. This was informed by commissioner and secretary, IT & C, K.D Vizo at a brief felicitation programme at the Chief Ministers Office, Nagaland Civil Secretariat, Kohima on Tuesday, stated DIPR report. Vizo, who addressed the programme, stated that CSI- Nihilent e-Governance Awards is presented every year to outstanding performance in e- Governance. He explained that the award was given on two cat-

Vizo said Nagaland is the first in India to take over State Portal and State Services Delivery Gateway (SP&SSDG) core infrastructure project, and the only State in India where the State IT department is running State Data Centre without engaging private Data Centre Operator (DCO). Nagaland is also the only State in India acting

T.R. Zeliang says he was a victim of majoritarian politics DIMAPRUR, FEB 28 (NPN): DAN chairman and advisor Finance, T.R. Zeliang on Tuesday claimed that he was dislodged as the chief minister not for any reason, but just because he was from a “minority tribe in Nagaland”. In a statement issued by Media & Press Bureau of NPF Central Office, Zeliang maintained that though he had majority support of MLAs, yet was dislodged as he was from a minority tribe , while campaigning at Tamenglong Manipur. He however had no regrets for vacating the CM’s chair as it was handed over to a person who loved the party and the people. He exuded confidence that chief minister, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu would take NPF and the DAN government to greater heights. He said though majority MLAs supported him, yet some elements from outside the assembly, resorted to violent means to demand his resignation. He also sought to project himself as a peace loving politician by telling NPF party members, supporters and Zeliangrong community at the rally, that he could have used Central forces like chief minister O. Ibobi to contain the protestors. However, Zeliang said

to the protracted Naga issue. The NPF leadership which promised political solution within three months, if voted to power in 2003 elections, seem to be still searching for that elusive promise made 14 years ago, NPCC said. Taking a dig at BJP, saying it was now the high command of NPF, NPCC questioned the saffron party about its promise to settle the Naga issue with 18 months after coming to power. NPCC said the recent statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home minister Rajnath Singh and MoS Home Kiren Rijiju during the election rally in Manipur had clearly indicated the mindset of the BJP leadership that it was keen to keep fishing in troubled waters. It said NPF continues to ignore the endless sufferings of the people while it was busy devoting time and resources to campaign beyond state borders. NPCC therefore urged upon the NPF leaders “to at least put a semblance of governance in the state for the next few months rather than attempting to shift blame on others for all their failures.”

Sc&T plagued by poor infra in NE states

Yitachu defends Zeliang Nagaland education minister and in-charge of Manipur NPF, Yitachu, has said that the former chief minister of Nagaland, TR Zeliang, “as a true Naga leader”, chose to step down to prevent the Naga society from plunging into further turmoil. Addressing a gathering of NPF functionaries and supporters at Tamenglong, Manipur on Tuesday, Yitachu said that if TR Zelaing desired he could have held on to his seat by making use of Central forces offered by the Centre. He said Zeliang was cornered from the Supreme Court angle, which was on the verge of delivering a verdict that could have gone against the cherished Article 371 A, and from “some civil organisations”, which expressed apprehensions that holding of ULB polls would go against customary practices of the Naga people. However, Yi-

tachu said that as a leader Zeliang had boldly decided to pre-empt the Supreme Court ruling and went ahead with the elections. Yitachu said as a result of “this supreme sacrifice he made” Zeliang’s leadership has grown manifold in the eyes of the legislators as well as the people of Nagaland. In a press release, NPF central office, media & press bureau said Yitachu expressed confidence that Zelaing would soon come back “to lead us one day.”

BJP functionaries join NPF

NPF media & press bureau has stated that BJP leaders-- Khangthonang Panmei, Manipur state BJP executive member and Pouhotlung, executive member BJP and ADC member, Tamenglong have resigned from the BJP party and joined the NPF to strengthen the hands of NPF Candidate for Tamenglong A/C Janghemlung Panmei.

as Service Centre Agency (SCA) without engaging private companies for running Common Service Centre (CSC). It was for this reason, the State has been ranked in number one category in India in e-District Mission Mode Project along with Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, Vizo said. He further informed that Nagaland has also become the first State in North

Eastern Region to implement Aadhar based Biometric Attendance System in Nagaland Civil Secretariat. Dr. Shürhozelie Lezietsu congratulated the minister, commissioner & secretary, officer and staff and said that the department has made much progress made in a very short span of time and has brought laurels to the state while also attracting foreign companies. He therefore, felt that young generation of the state will have no problem with the advancement of technology and expressed hope to see Nagaland emerging as one of the best states in the field of Information & Technology. Chief minister further assured his support towards development of IT department in the state. Paiwang termed the occasion as a red letter day not only for the department but to the state. KUT declares noncooperation with KTC DIMAPUR, FEB 28 (NPN): Khiamniungan Union Tuensang (KUT) has declared “non-cooperation” with Khiamniungan Tribal Council (KTC), on the “flexible decisions” adopted by latter on the “controversial” ULB election. KUT took the decision on February 25 and also adopted following terms and conditions: that all bonafide citizens/members of KUT would cease to involve in KTC activities with immediate effect and all designated officials of KTC from amongst KUT would cease to involve/resign from KTC. KUT also warned of strong action against any of its member involved in KTC activities and during non-co-operation period, it asked government office, departments and other NGOs to contact KUT office on any matters/issues concern-

ing the member of KUT/ Khiamniungans residing in Tuensang town. Earlier, according to KUT president M. Neolo, executive chairman N.L. Tangsoi, general secretary S.Mudang Shiu and executive secretary Amos Nyukshing, the union being the bonafide unit and member of KTC has been rendering its outmost support and services for the welfare and interest of the community for years. However, they asserted that the decision of KTC on ULB election was contrary and therefore, demanded dissolution of the present KTC team within February 15, 2017. This was contested by KGOA, KBCA and KSU urging KUT to reconsider the decision, but since it “could not arrive at a concrete solution”, the union adopted non-cooperation, the release stated. Only 20 MLAs from 89% of Mnp; 40 MLAs from rest 11%

IMPHAL, Feb 28 (Agencies): Manipur, which has been ruled by the Congress for the last 15 years, is often accused of excluding the hills from the development agenda. People from the hill areas claim that despite hill districts of Manipur comprising 89% of the geographical area, there were only 20 MLAs from these areas in the Manipur Assembly. The valley, which comprises just 11% area, had 40 seats and around 80% of the funds meant for the development in the state were consumed by the valley. The condition in hills worsened following demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes and economic blockade by the United Naga Council (UNC) on two highways since November 1 last year. The constitutional provision of the Sixth Schedule is not implemented in the hills of Manipur while most of the North-eastern states have it. A full bench of the High Court of Manipur has

directed the secretary, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, to carry out the high court order regarding repairing of pot holes along the National Highway-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) with immediate effect. Adim Pamei, the BJP candidate who is contesting against deputy chief minister Gaikhangam from Nungba assembly constituency in Tamenlong district told ET, “We hardly have roads in hill areas. Attendance of teachers in government-run schools is very poor. Hill areas have faced apathy of the Congress government and there is hardly any development.” Adim Pamei, the BJP candidate who is contesting against deputy chief minister Gaikhangam from Nungba assembly constituency in Tamenlong district told ET, “We hardly have roads in hill areas. Attendance of teachers in government-run schools is very poor. Hill areas have faced apathy of the Congress government

and there is hardly any development.” Gaikhangam, who belongs to a Naga tribe and comes from hill area, however, admitted that there was discrimination against the hills but that is a thing of the past. “We took up inclusive infrastructure development in the hills. Different areas in hills have got sub-divisional officer, block development officer, mini-secretariat with accommodation to government staffs. There is a balance between development between the hills and the valley,” he said. He said that creation of seven new districts which UNC is opposing by resorting to blockade is done for administrative convenience and meant to take administration at the doorstep of the people, especially in the hills. “For decades, hills have faced neglect in the hands of the Ibobi government and this negates his claim of inclusive development,” said S Milan, general secretary of UNC.

northeast UNC to oppose Cong in Mnp polls Imphal, Feb 28 (PTI): The United Naga Council (UNC) which has been continuing a blockade in two national highways in Manipur since November 1, has said it would oppose Congress in the Assembly election to be held on March 4 and 8. The UNC would oppose Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and his party, Congress, in the polls and support Naga Peoples’ Front (UNF) in the coming election, the Naga body said in a statement last evening. The UNC also asked all Nagas in the state to support candidates of NPF which has four members in the outgoing Assembly. The UNC has imposed a blockade on NH2 and NH 37 to protest against the state government’s decision to create 7 new districts which, the UNC said, would bifurcate ancestral lands of Nagas in Manipur. Supply of essential commodities to Manipur has been severely hit due to the blockade. UNC also criticised the Ibobi Singh government for arrest of its president Gaidon Kamei who was taken into custody on November 25 in connection with the blockade.

The DCW also asked the social media site to provide complete contact details, IP addresses and any other information available with it which will help identify the abusers. “ABVP Down Down,” “ABVP Go Back” and “ABVP Don’t be Creepy” were among the slogans the students raised. Another was: “Delhi Police, Sanghi Police.” The call for Tuesday’s march was given by the Left-leaning All India Students Association but attracted even those who are not with the group. Former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar also joined the protest. Among the political leaders who addressed the students were D. Raja (CPI), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) and Yogendra Yadav (Swaraj Abhiyan). A l s o o n Tu e s d ay, members of the Congressaffiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI) staged a hunger strike in the campus, also against the ABVP. “After the Ramjas violence, a majority of students who want a peaceful campus are scared... There is hardly any space for debate,” NSUI President Amrita Dhawan told IANS. “Nothing justifies violence.” On Monday, the ABVP held a “Tiranga march” in the university. It has said it will organise another show of strength on Thursday.

Welcoming the registration of an FIR by the Delhi Police regarding the alleged rape threat issued to Gurmehar, Rijiju said: “Anybody who has used such language must be identified. May be someone from a fake account has done this”. Warning opposition parties not to use students to target the Modi government, the MoS said: “I want to tell Congress and Arvind Kejriwal not to instigate young students. Studies are the top priority in colleges and university and they should not disrupt the environment there. Youngsters are free to speak and do what they want but they must not speak against the nation”.

est in the country, as well as a sprinkling from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Ambedkar University and Jamia Millia Islamia. Several lecturers also joined the march. On February 21, the ABVP forced the Ramjas College in the campus to axe a seminar due to the participation of a JNU student charged with sedition last year. The next day, ABVP activists were accused of attacking students, teachers and journalists during a protest march. Protesters insisted their march on Tuesday was not political but for freedom in the campuses. “I was bruised on the 22nd because of stone pelting. I don’t belong to any political party. I am here to protest against violence,” said a Ramjas College girl student who did not want to be named. A lecturer who joined the show of strength underlined that she was there “for the safety of students threatened by the ABVP”. Another teacher, Avinash, added: “This is not about ABVP, this is about hooliganism. The people who indulged in violence are not nationalists, they are macho elements.”

NEW DELHI, FEB 28 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court today refused to allow a woman to abort her 26-week foetus that would be born with Down Syndrome. The apex court said that aborting a 20-plus week foetus can be allowed only in cases where there is a danger to the life of the mother or the foetus. Medical reports said the woman’s child may suffer from physical and mental problems and with low intelligence, but there was no physical risk to the mother in continuing the pregnancy. “It is sad that the child may suffer from physical and mental challenges and it’s unfortunate for the mother but we can’t allow an abortion...We have a life in our hands,” the court said. Down Syndrome is a congenital disorder which causes intellectual impairment and physical abnormalities. A two-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Justice S.A. Bobde and Justice L. Nageswara Rao, passed the interim order. Meanwhile, the Centre informed the bench that it is considering extending medical termination of foetuses of up to 24 weeks. In February, the top court allowed a 22-yearold woman to terminate her 24-week pregnancy on the ground that it would endanger her life. In January, the apex court allowed a Mumbai-based woman, who was in her 24th week of pregnancy, to terminate her pregnancy under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. The court took into consideration a medical report that suggested the foetus would not be able to survive without the skull.

Delhi University students rally against ABVP.

Hours after Delhi University student and daughter of a martyr Gurmehar Kaur announced her withdrawal from the anti-ABVP campaign, minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju said she was free to say and do what she wants and should be left alone as per her wish. Rijiju also hit back at those criticising him for asking who was polluting Gurmehar’s mind, saying that he stood by his tweet and was only speaking his mind. “(When I say) somebody (is polluting her mind), I mean the Leftists,” he said. Highlighting that Gurmehar was the daughter of a martyr, Rijiju, as quoted by ANI, even said the martyr’s “soul must be weeping on seeing his daughter being misguided by those who celebrate the bodies of martyrs”. Asked about Gurmehar’s decision to step back from the anti-ABVP protest on DU campus, Rijiju said: “She has the freedom to speak her mind. She has all the right to do whatever she wants. So don’t disturb her.” On her reported decision to leave Delhi for the time being, Rijiju said that Delhi is a safe city and she should have nothing to fear. “That’s (to leave Delhi) her choice. She should be protected and will be protected,” he said. Speaking later at the sidelines of an event in the home ministry, he said: “Her security is our priority. No one should be threatened or harmed. If someone threatens a person on social media, action shall be initiated against him/ her. Delhi Police has been told (about alleged rape threat to Gurmehar). New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS): Shouting “ABVP Go Back”, thousands of students marched through Delhi University on Tuesday to denounce the RSSaffiliated body for attacking students, teachers and journalists in the campus. Some 4-5,000 students, mostly girls, walked from Khalsa College at the edge of the university through the sprawling campus and finally gathered at the Arts Faculty, constantly raising slogans all the time. Many held banners demanding the right to freedom of speech and condemning the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for the February 21-22 disturbances in the otherwise placid campus. “We are here to show solidarity and to make the ABVP understand that DU stands together against violence,” student Hindolee Dutta told IANS. Dutta was from Lady Shri Ram College, whose student Gurmehar Kaur got death and rape threats after launching a social media campaign against the ABVP. Gurpreet, a student of Delhi’s Ambedkar University, told IANS: “There have been increasing threats to the rights of citizens and students. Our right to protest has been taken away by the ABVP and RSS. “This is not just about Delhi University but the whole nation.” Hindolee and Gurpreet spoke as a mass of students walked slowly towards the Arts Faculty holding banners and shouting slogans. A large number of police personnel accompanied them. The protest mainly drew students from Delhi University, one of the old-

Campus battleground

I

ndian universities are gradually being turned into political battlegrounds largely due to the resurgence of a proactive strategy by the student wing of the BJP- the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)- which is seeking to gain control of the universities. Campuses have been the breeding grounds of many national and state political leaders, with the ‘60’s and ‘70 are witnessing the zenith of student activism. The adulteration of student campus politics by the external political parties has ensured that affairs of colleges and university campuses reflect the ideologies of their parent mentors. Political parties have been planting their political weeds in campuses since they realise the benefits of ‘catching them young’. Though political parties when in power make much noise about the need to ban external politics into campuses, yet when they are in power, it is forgotten. In another way, simply banning external politics would also lead to more problems. In this regard, former EC Michael Lyngdoh had recommded that campus elections as well as the face of student politics if violence and other unwanted developments are to be avoided. It may be noted that since 2015 Indian universities have seen a marked rise in student protests and subsequent counter-protests and violence. Such activities have turned Indian universities into battleground for politics. The ruling BJP may be faulted for enabling its student wing ABVP to attempt at gaining control over student politics. The use of the label ‘anti-national’ has been picked mainly to curb politically articulate students who publicly question issues that are sensitive to the current government in Delhi. As per reports and videos appearing on social media ,the appear to show premises normally characterised by sober academic activities overtaken by violence and turmoil. Who are these agents of turmoil who seem to lay siege on the campuses with extraordinary means to organise huge groups ready to pounce of those students seen to be indulging in ‘anti-national’ activities. Upon investigation, there seemed to be the result of a coordinated action between the ruling party, their student activists, the police and high-ranking university administrators. This has become a trend inside important universities which are being targeted by the ABVP during the recent years. The link between those in power at the centre and those at the lower level at universities could be seen in the handling of the Rohith Vemula case in 2015. Rohith was a leader of the Ambedkar Students Association(ASA) and when his programme to voice out against the death penalty to Yakub Memmon was disrupted, he and four Dalit students fell foul of the university. Rohith was not only hounded but had his work in the university stopped and stipend also stopped. Ultimately he was driven to commit suicide and this only resulted in a political slugfest between the opposition and the government. The space for dissent in the world’s largest democracy has shrunk considerably, with the label “anti-national” regularly carted out to criminalise student protests. This happened in New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (despite the top academic ranking and robust student activism of ‘India’s Berkeley’ university). The political targeting of institutions of higher education has become a trademark of current Hindutva nationalism, but with its dramatic enforcement of political control on an Indian campus it has reached a new stage. How will India’s democracy and rule of law fare in the light of such deepening antagonisms?.

DailyDevotion “Do You Now Believe?” “By this we believe….” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?” —John 16:30-31 “Now we believe….” But Jesus asks, “Do you…? Indeed the hour is coming…that you…will leave Me alone” (John 16:31-32). Many Christian workers have left Jesus Christ alone and yet tried to serve Him out of a sense of duty, or because they sense a need as a result of their own discernment. The reason for this is actually the absence of the resurrection life of Jesus. Our soul has gotten out of intimate contact with God by leaning on our own religious understanding (see Proverbs 3:5-6). This is not deliberate sin and there is no punishment attached to it. But once a person realizes how he has hindered his understanding of Jesus Christ, and caused uncertainties, sorrows, and difficulties for himself, it is with shame and remorse that he has to return. We need to rely on the resurrection life of Jesus on a much deeper level than we do now. We should get in the habit of continually seeking His counsel on everything, instead of making our own commonsense decisions and then asking Him to bless them. He cannot bless them; it is not in His realm to do so, and those decisions are severed from reality. If we do something simply out of a sense of duty, we are trying to live up to a standard that competes with Jesus Christ. We become a prideful, arrogant person, thinking we know what to do in every situation. We have put our sense of duty on the throne of our life, instead of enthroning the resurrection life of Jesus. We are not told to “walk in the light” of our conscience or in the light of a sense of duty, but to “walk in the light as He is in the light…” (1 John 1:7). When we do something out of a sense of duty, it is easy to explain the reasons for our actions to others. But when we do something out of obedience to the Lord, there can be no other explanation— just obedience. That is why a saint can be so easily ridiculed and misunderstood.

he Naga in Nagaland quietly take the Indian Army as its ancient enemy and occupying Force, but unemployed Naga Youths seek Army Recruitments with zeal! The Indian Army eulogizes its voluntary Soldiers as if no other Citizen in the Country is more patriotic than a highly paid Indian Army Officer dying in the IndoPakistan Border Wars, it decorates them with great Honor. A Naga Soldier in the Indian Army fighting in one of the Indo-Pakistan Border Wars was killed, and consequently in the rare Military Burial, paradoxically not only the close relatives of the deceased but other Naga Crowds of much wider circle beyond the immediate Family attended the Military Funeral. What little odd paradox was that the occasion fell on a Sunday and despite the Sunday Church Service clash of timing, the Naga in considerable number attended the spectacular Funeral as a sacrifice for India! A certain Government Officer of some standing, was found to have stashed away a large sum of money in cash in his house. The Police made a surprise check and, Cash in terms of several MIllions of Rupees were said found spread in the Bed and in the Ceiling of the House. The Officer was suspended and an enquiry was conducted against him. He confessed some of the money belongs to him but most belongs to the highest Minister in the State! Surprisingly oddly, the Government soon after revoked the suspension Order; re-instated the Officer and promoted him! The Writer was glad a Chief Minister excluded a rogue MLA

istorical fact that Nagaland has been kept divided arbitrarily by the British and the Indian. The Naga’s aspiration was to live together as one and so the NSCN on behalf of the Naga’s diligently pushing hard to advocate every Naga’s cherished dream to live as one family. From zero level to its zenith the NSCN had sacrificed their life for the sake of the Naga’s and after nearly two decades of enduring and sustained negotiation with GOI, the Naga takes great courage to embark upon a Peace Process to undertake negotatiation and bring succeed and where now arrived to a concrete” Framework Agreement” signed on August 3, 2015. The 16 Point Agreement between GOI and the NPC in 1960 which led to the formation of the Nagaland Statehood was under the constitution of India and it is purely for the Nagas of Nagaland only, whereas the Framework Agreement is for the entire Nagas to live as one, irrespective of its boundary of the Nagas that has been disintegrated by the evil force without the consent of the Nagas. This Framework Agreement does not incorporate in the Indian constitution, with the people’s mandate the NSCN on behalf of the Nagas are now engaging unconditional talks with GOI and has started a good decision based on mutual respect and co-existence as two separate entity while recognizing our unique history and its identity, ostensibly this Framework agreement cannot be compare with the 16 Point Agreement, therefore the Nagas should

know the distinction between the 16 Point Agreement and its Framework Agreement. Opposing the Framework Agreement genuinely declared anyone as anti-naga. Instead of creating hullaballoo, we should acknowledge and consider this Framework Agreement as a clarion call to every Naga irrespective of their Past and Standing. It is important for the Naga People to stand united with our leaders, so that all the hurdles can be subsides to bring solution of the people of Nagalim and to restore our Fundamental rights. Despite of all the atrocities, the oppression the Naga People still active and vital. When such positive momentum wave is happening it is so immature and illogical for any civilized Person to ask the content of its Framework Agreement. Instead Naga People should worry the fact that Naga People wait for Political solution to the half century old conflict. God was so gracious with the Naga’s till date and so only the GOI affirmed that this Framework Agreement will end the oldest insurgency in the country. At this transitional period the deepening, the healing, understanding and forgiving process in Naga society is the need of the moment. The Naga people need the spirit of forgiveness and oneness to restore the lost unity and leave aside our difference and misunderstanding. It is time for the Nagas to prepare a good reception to the final landing of our Naga political settlement. KUKNALIM. Elian.Z.lotha, (Elianzialotha77@gmail.coms)

Importance of middle way

here is a middle way in everything. Middle way means, not yours nor mine but ours. Not your will nor my will but our will. It is sometimes called fifty-fifty. Not one sided decision but two sided decision. This middle way always demands sacrifices and forgiveness from everybody for the betterment of everybody. Quite often, middle way turns to be the God’s will. Due to the issue of ULB, enough damages have been done in our society. If it is not timely settled, it may lead to civil war like bloody confrontations and counter confrontations situation which may paralyse our government, impoverished our already down economy, society may be fragmented and the beauty of the image of the church may be destroyed. When all these things take place, our age long cherished freedom

from his Ministry, but oddly, a very friendly former Minister, but famously tainted is inducted into the present Ministry, seriously dashing the widely hoped beginning for a new Nagaland and raises the worried question: Do the Government care about the quality of governance in Nagaland?! When a Naga crowd collects in some size on a common social ground, it assumes the majority of the august Legislative Party. Then, comes the testing of strength on the floor of the august House, as is wont to in any Democracy and the assumed majority vanishes like Genies of Aladdin’s Lamp! In March 2015, the Naga Community in Dimapur created an incited Mob that attacked the Government Jail and lynched a rumored innocent Miya Shopkeeper alleged to have raped a local girl acquaintance riding the man’s Bike together into a Hotel in the Town. He was done to abhorrent mob actions worst than Crucifixion and so far the Government could only do no more than change the Enquiry Authority. Nagaland must imitate earlier British Administration Standard of governance in the Naga Hills, based on: Honor, Respect, Strength, Decisiveness, Law & Order, uncompromising Justice and quiet concern for the people. And when everything of many other things still remaining; ELECTION IS THE MOTHER OF BEELZEBUB IN NAGALAND! The NBCC has been routinely fighting for ‘Clean Election’, and if I may, this time, the NBCC may seriously convene all its constituent Church Associations and decide every CHURCH ring the Church’s Good News distinctly in no uncertain Terms, that God

would fly away from our hands and we would be re-enslaved. Let me quote an old saying “United we stand divided we fall.” This is not the right time to make justifications of our stance and to interpret and reinterpret the legal terms, because these kinds of interpretation and justification would only put fuel into the burning fire. The need of the hour is to douse the fire before it turns into a wild fire. Let us also be watchful not to politicise this issue, because some of the selfish politicians may be happy to use this kind of situation for their vested interest. They may take part in the movement with hidden ideas. So we have to be careful and cautious so that we could identify the wolves with the covering skin of lamb. Yes, some young people have sacrificed their precious lives. I believe

that they have given their lives not to destroy our society but to build up our society. Not to divide but to unite. Let us not make their noble sacrifice as a poison to destroy our nation but as tonic to make our nation healthy. Therefore looking at their priceless sacrifice let us come to an amicable understanding in the name of the departed souls. Let us use our sense and ask a question to ourselves- do the departed souls be happy if the Naga society is destroyed upon their blood? What do you think? Nagaland state is a Christian dominated one. All the elected ministers and MLAs are Christians. All the NTAC and JCC members are Christians. All the Hoho’s members are Christians and all the members of the youth and women organisations are Christians too. Therefore whenever we are fighting

for our rights and for the cause of the Nagas as a whole we should not forget the word Christian which means the followers of Jesus Christ who says that we must forgive one another. Who knows that it is God’s given opportunity for us to forgive one another. We Nagas are praying for a greater revival. As a result God is testing Nagas that whether Nagas are ready to pay the price for the revival we are asking for? To prevail peace, justice and prosperity in our land will never be by chance or by luck. But it is an achievement and fruit of unity and understanding among the people. Let me quote another old saying “No pain no gain.” Remember the quality of a leader is known by ability to solve the serious problem like ours. Let us use our mind not our might for the betterment of our nation. History proves that

A tribute to Dr A B Choudhury

n the late summer of 1951, little did Mr. and Mrs. M K Choudhury know the enigmatic life that their 3rd born son would lead. Born on 16th October 1952 in Dhubri (Assam), Dr Ashit Baran Choudhury or Shibu as he was fondly called at home, believed in simple living and high thinking. Coming from a modest background, he completed his schooling in Tuensang, where his father was deputed as a representative of Assam Government in NEFA (North East Frontier Agency). Due to his love for Nagas, Dr Choudhury’s father chose to stay back in Nagaland when he was given the option to rejoin his mother institution. Dr Choudhury proved his father’s decision right when he became the first student to pass in 1st division from Government High School, Tuensang under Assam Board in the year 1968. He later went on to pursue his medical degree in Guwahati Medical College after completing B.Sc part I from Science College, Jotsoma. Being teachers’ favorite student throughout his study years, he was offered Post

Graduate degree based on his meritorious record. However, he had to decline it owing to the rising family responsibilities after his father’s untimely demise. After passing out from GMC in 1977, Dr Choudhury joined Civil Hospital, Dimapur and worked there for 3 years (1977 to 1980) followed by a brief stint at Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Dimapur. His constant hunger for knowledge and passion to serve humanity drove him to learn different languages. He was proficient in Bengali, English, Hindi, Nepali and 17 local Naga dialects. He started his private practice in 1980 in a small clinic attached to a pharmacy near Railway Gate, Dimapur. The hordes of patients, who turn up from far and wide, were of proof of his clinical acumen and human nature. He married in 1985 and the couple was blessed with a daughter in the following year. As a husband and father, he ensured that both his wife and daughter were empowered and financially independent. As a popularity grew, he

shifted his clinic to the current place in Burma Camp. Throughout his 40 years of clinical practice, he gave selfless service to the people of Nagaland. Other than treating patients in charity and giving free medications, he was also actively involved in relief works in remote villages, providing financial help to the needy and pioneering the set-up of medical organizations in Nagaland. His demise on 23rd February 2017 was not mourned by family but by the multitude of people cutting across all sections as well. The palpable disbelief of the sudden fatal heart attack was evident in the tears of those who loved him dearly. He survived by his wife and his only daughter, who as he desired took up the same profession as his. Dr A.B Choudhury has left behind a legacy that will be hard to emulate and a void that is impossible to fill. This column is just a small memoir to the exemplary life that he has led. violence always generates violence. A violent society cannot be united and developed. That society will march backward and the aspirations of the people will never be fulfilled. Violent society will create weak government and down economy and in turn weak government and weak economy will make violence, till society is destroyed beyond restoration. That nation would always be the slave of others. I pray that Nagas may not face the situation. Nagaland is a poor State. So many of the people are solely depending on their daily wages for their survival, but if we call bandh now and then, some of our people will have to starve. But the question is if our demands are fulfilled due to the calling of bandh after bandh, would the fate of those poor people be better? In this case calling bandh is against our

people. This system is antipeople. More than half of our population is poor. Therefore calling bandhs is a self destruction. If we want to teach a lesson to the government in power we have many democratic methods than call bandh. Therefore we have to think twice before we make any decision. As a right thinking citizen, I am ashamed of the prevailing situation in our society. I think we are making a mockery of ourselves especially for other non-Christians. When Christian dominated State like ours becomes a mockery due to un-Christian practices, we are also making God whom we profess also a mockery. If we take long time to realise our mistake sooner or later God’s punishment will speak to the Nagas. Let us not play with God’s patience. Prof. Rev Rongsen CTC

Appeal to apex tribal hoho’s NTAC and JCC Sir,

May I request the apex tribal Hoho’s, NTAC, JCC to do a favor for the indigenous Nagas of Nagaland. We all are aware that “United we stand, divided we fall. Now come to our present Naga context, the chief stakeholders of the state of Nagaland have been divided into so called, Naga Hoho, ENPO, CNTC, NTC (let them be as it is). But in wider sighted, what all these groups can do for the welfare of the Nagas of Nagaland? Only few tribes in groups, who can work hard for their respective tribes, therefore now it is high time for Nagas of Nagaland to wake up and unite under one umbrella so together we will safeguard and protect our homeland Nagaland. We are fit and legitimate enough to protect and solve our own problems. If not now, in near future a time will come, things will take without our consent and knowledge and we cannot do anything. So if time permits then, discuss this point in your scheduled March 3 meeting. T.R. Zeliang says he was a victim...

(From p-1) Zeliang acknowledged the sacrifice made by four NPF legislators, who resigned from Manipur Assembly in protest against the three anti-tribal bills. He said this clearly showed that NPF “stands with the people and never betrays the people by implementing the manifesto on the ground,” he added. He pointed out that the recent creation of districts like Nonei and Jeribam had further divided the villages of Tousem and Tamei sub divisions and that the Zeliangrong people were now divided by being placed in three different administrative states of Manipur, Assam and Nagaland. “This has made our people minorities in our respective states,” he said. Observing that Manipur was likely to have a hung house, Zeliang claimed that 15 NPF legislators, if elected, would be the deciding factor in the formation of the next government.

The conciliation meeting before the Chief Labour Commissioner on February 21 failed to break the deadlock as the bank management body -- Indian Banks Association (IBA) -did not agree to the union demands. Most state-run banks have informed customers that functioning of branches and offices would be hit if the strike was observed on Tuesday. New generation private banks like -- ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and others -- are not part of the union and continued to function normally but cheque clearances did not take place. Besides, cash transactions would also be hit and the ATMs are likely to be emptied early during the day. “ATM operations are yet to normalise after the demonetisation of high value notes. It seems people have resigned to the situation of less cash,” Venkatachalam added.

Government recently decided to take “harsh punitive” action, including freezing of their bank accounts used to launder money or evade taxes. Following a review by the Prime Minister’s Office, a task force with members from regulatory ministries and enforcement agencies has been constituted to monitor action against “deviant” shell companies. While the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) has filed cases against 49 shell companies, as much as Rs 3,900 crore have been laundered by 559 persons with the help of 54 professionals. Also, Rs 1,238 crore cash has been deposited in shell or dormant companies, post demonetisation. A task force, headed by revenue and corporate affairs secretaries, with members from various regulatory ministries and enforcement agencies has been set up to monitor the actions taken against such deviant shell firms by various agencies.

all old-generation private banks, foreign banks, regional rural banks and cooperative banks. An officer in a government-owned bank preferring anonymity told IANS: “The clerical staff will get overtime allowance for working extra during the demonetisation period. But the officers will not get anything and in addition they will be losing a day’s salary due to the strike.” Not agreeing with that view, D. Thomas Franco Rajendra Dev, Senior Vice President of the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), told IANS: “Our demand is to treat all the employees equally. And officers will also get their due share.” He said the strike is a total success across the country. Venkatachalam said the shutdown comes after all attempts to find a solution to the demands raised by the unions yielded no results.

(Agencies): In a major crackdown on black money, the government is contemplating curb on institutional money laundering by shutting down lakhs of shell companies, a newspaper report has said. As per a report in the Times of India, such “dormant companies, suspected to be anywhere between 6 to 7 lakh.” The TOI report also said that many of these firms “had carried out high-value transactions and deposited huge amounts of cash in banks following the demonetisation of highvalue currency notes”. Shell companies are characterised by nominal paid-up capital, high reserves and surplus on account of receipt of high share premium, investment in unlisted companies, no dividend income and high cash in hand. The government has “involved multiple agencies with the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) playing a key role,” TOI

C h e n na i , F e b 2 8 (IANS): Banking operations across the country came to a halt on Tuesday as 10 lakh bankers staged a strike against the government’s “anti-people banking reforms”, said a bank union leader. The strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), comprising nine unions. They also pressed for compensation to employees for extra work done on account of demonetisation. “Around 85,000 branches of commercial banks, 105,000 branches of co-operative bank and others are on strike,” C.H. Venkatachalam, General Secretary, All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) told IANS here. He said clearance of 40 lakh cheques totalling around Rs 22,000 crore would be affected. The strike covers employees and officers in all public sector banks, including State Bank of India,

Obama behind leaks, protests: Trump

view, a clip of which was released Monday night. Trump then discussed the leaks that have disrupted his first month in office. “You never know what’s exactly happening behind the scenes. You know, you’re probably right or possibly right, but you never know,” Trump said in another preview clip of

the interview. “No, I think that President Obama is behind it because his people are certainly behind it. And some of the leaks possibly come from that group, which are really serious because they are very bad in terms of national security. But I also understand that is politics. Mattis presents plan to defeat ISIS where we go from here, how we go,” he said in response to a question. The Pentagon Press Secretary Capt Jeff Davis said the preliminary plan submitted by Mattis is trans-regional. “This is not just a military plan. It draws upon all elements of national power -- diplomatic, financial, cyber, intelligence (and) public diplomacy, and it’s been drafted in close coordination with our inter agency partners,” Davis told reporters during an off-camera news conference. “This plan is tr uly trans-regional. This is not just about Iraq and Syria, it is about defeating ISIS around the globe and other trans-regional violent extremist organisations, such as Al-Qaida,” he said. The formulation of the plan fulfilled a campaign pledge by President Donald

Trump, who had said that if elected he would order up a 30-day review on accelerated action to eliminate ISIS as a threat. Last month, Trump visited the Pentagon for the first time to sign an executive order directing Mattis to draw up the plan within 30 days. The military under the Obama administration was strongly opposed to the introduction of major elements of US conventional forces in combating the ISIS in Iraq and Syria, and backed the train, advise and assist role with local forces. While officials did not name countries or the region listed in the plan, the comments coming from them indicated that it also includes addressing the challenge of growing presence of ISIS in South Asia, in particular Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Israel police begin partial evacuation of Jewish settlement TEL AVIV, FEB 28 (IANS): Israel police on Tuesday began the partial evacuation of nine Jewish settlements in the centre of the West Bank, after a ruling from the high court. The court has ordered nine houses to be demolished in the West Bank settlement of Ofra, as they are built on private Palestinian land, Efe news reported. “The evacuation of the nine homes has begun, in accordance with the high court order,” said Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri, who asked the settlers for respect and responsibility during removal. Hundreds of police and border guards were deployed in the area, a source said, referring to the arrest of a 17-year-old young man who assaulted one of the officers while trying to resist the evacuation. The high court on Monday rejected the appeal presented by the settlers who wanted to cancel the demolition.

KUALA LUMPUR, FEB 28 (AGENCIES): A highlevel North Korean delegation arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday seeking the body of leader Kim Jong Un’s half brother, the victim of a nerve-agent attack that many suspect the North itself of orchestrating. The body of Kim Jong Nam, killed Feb. 13 at Kuala Lumpur’s airport, is at the center of a heated diplomatic battle between North Korea and Malaysia. North Korea opposed Malaysian officials even conducting an autopsy, while Malaysia has resisted giving up the body without getting DNA samples and confirmation from next of kin. The delegation includes Ri Tong Il, a former North Korean deputy ambassador to the United Nations, who told reporters Tuesday outside the North Korean Embassy that the

diplomats were in Malaysia to retrieve the body and seek the release of a North Korean arrested in the case. He said the delegation also wants “development of the friendly relationship” between North Korea and Malaysia. Malaysian officials have confirmed that the victim of the attack was Kim Jong Nam. North Korea, however, has identified him only as a North

Korean national with a diplomatic passport bearing the name Kim Chol. Health Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam said Malaysia will continue to insist that the body be positively identified by medical examiners through DNA or other means before it can be released. He said the protocol is to release it to the next-of-kin once identification is completed.

May nudging Scotland toward second referendum: Sturgeon LONDON, FEB 28 (AGENCIES): The “sheer intransigence” of the British government over Brexit could lead to a second Scottish independence referendum, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Tuesday, warning time was running out for the country to change course. Writing in the Times newspaper, Sturgeon said Britain’s vote to leave the European Union had changed the landscape since Scotland last held a referendum on its independence, voting by a 10-point margin to remain a part of the United Kingdom in 2014. “If an independence referendum does arise, it will not be down to bad faith on the part of the Scottish government, but to

sheer intransigence on the part of the UK government,” Sturgeon said. “It is not too late for the UK government to change course, but time is running out.” While voters in England and Wales strongly supported leaving the EU in last June’s referendum, Scots overwhelmingly backed staying inside the bloc. Speculation about a possible second Scottish secession vote has increased in the last week with media reports suggesting nationalists were preparing to call for a referendum as early as next month to coincide with Prime Minister Theresa May’s plan to formally trigger Britain’s exit from the European Union.

WASHINGTON, FEB 28 (PTI): Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has submitted to the White House a preliminary trans-regional plan that suggests deployment of all elements of US national power to defeat the Islamic State terror group around the globe. “The Department of Defence presented its preliminary plan to the White House today to defeat ISIS,” the White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters yesterday. “This plan has been delivered by Secretary Mattis, who is currently briefing the principals on the option presented today and seeking their input and feedback,” he said. Part of the plan is to make sure that he fully discusses the recommendations that he is making and seek the input and feedback of the other principals. “That can help guide

hind things, that’s politics. And it will probably continue.” Trump, however, did not offer any evidence for his claim. Earlier this month, Trump told Fox News that reports of his calls with the leaders of Mexico and Australia were caused by leaks from “Obama people”.

WASHINGTON, FEB 28 (AGENCIES): The United States called on Russia Sunday to “immediately” obs e r ve t h e c e a s e f i r e i n Ukraine, accusing combined Russian and separatist forces of targeting international monitors. “We call on Russia and the separatist forces it backs to immediately observe the ceasefire, withdraw all heavy weapons, and allow full and unfettered access to the OSCE monitors,” the State Department said. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the United States was closely monitoring growing violence in eastern Ukraine and the failure of the combined Russian and separatist forces to abide by a ceasefire agreed to two years ago in Minsk. “We condemn Friday’s targeting of OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) monitors and the seizure of a SMM unmanned aerial vehicle by combined-Russian separatist forces,” Toner said.

WASHINGTON, FEB 28 (IANS): US President Donald Trump has accused his predecessor Barack Obama of being responsible for the leaks within his administration and the sizable, ang r y town-hall crowds Republicans have faced across the country. Trump was asked in an interview on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” if he believed Obama was responsible for the town-hall protests against Republicans this month. “It turns out his organisation seems to do a lot of these organising to some of the protests that these Republicans are seeing around the country against you. Do you believe President Obama is behind it and if he is, is that a violation of the so-called unsaid Presidents’ code?” Trump was asked. “No, I think he is behind it. Oscars 2017: Truth behind ‘Envelopegate’ emerges B-Town backs Gurmehar; Javed slams Rijiju B

T

he man in charge of the Oscars awards envelopes has been blamed for the gaffe that saw La La Land named best picture. PriceWaterhouseCoopers accountant Brian Cullinan was supposed to hand the best picture envelope to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway on Sunday. In a statement, PwC said he “mistakenly handed [them] the back-up envelope for actress in a leading role instead.” It’s also emerged that Cullinan tweeted a picture of Emma Stone backstage just minutes before the mix-up took place. The tweet has since

been deleted, though it survives on various websites and on a cached Google page. Cullinan had a complete set of envelopes on one side of the stage, while Martha Ruiz, another PwC accountant, had a duplicate set on the other. This explains why both best actress winner Emma Stone and Beatty ended up in possession of an envelope related to the best actress award. Beatty was evidently confused by the contents of the envelope, passing the card onto his former Bonnie and Clyde co-star. Seeing the words “La La Land” beneath Emma Stone’s name, Dunaway declared her musical ro-

mance the winner of the best picture award. Only after that film’s producers had begun their acceptance speeches was it revealed that Moonlight had in fact won the award. One of Cullinan’s colleagues told Variety that the accountant “feels very, very terrible” and “is very upset about this mistake”. The mix-up brought a chaotic end to Sunday’s Oscars ceremony, hosted in Los Angeles by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. The organisers of the Academy Awards “deeply regret the mistakes” that led to La La Land being

wrongly named best picture. “We apologise to the entire cast and crew of La La Land and Moonlight whose experience was profoundly altered by this error,” the Academy said. President Trump and his policies were at the forefront of many attendees’ minds on Sunday, with Gael Garcia Bernal among those to take issue with them on stage. “As a Mexican, as a Latin-American, as a migrant worker, as a human being, I’m against any form of wall that separates us,” the actor said - a reference to Trump’s plans to

build a border wall between Mexico and the US. In his first comments on the Oscars, the president has suggested the awards “were focused so hard on politics that they didn’t get the act together at the end”. “It was a little sad,” he told the right-wing Breitbart website. “It took away from the glamour of the Oscars. It didn’t feel like a very glamorous evening. “I’ve been to the Oscars,” continued the president. “There was something very special missing, and then to end that way was sad.”

ollywood celebrities Vishal Dadlani and Anubhav Sinha on Tuesday backed Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur for her online campaign against the ABVP, with veteran writer Javed Akhtar taking on Union Minister Kiren Rijiju for his “grossly biased” views. Actress-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt and actor Rohit Roy even slammed cricketer Virendra Sehwag and actor Randeep Hooda, who apparently mocked Kaur, whose father was killed in the Kargil war, for saying “Pakistan did not kill my dad, war killed him’. Akhtar, who has earlier

too spoken out against “rising intolerance”, wondered how an “educated” person like Rijiju had remarked as to who was “polluting” the mind of Kaur, who made a Facebook post with the hashtag #studentsagainstABVP. “If a hardly literate player or a wrestler troll a pacifist daughter of a martyr, it’s understandable, but what’s wrong with some educated folks. I don’t (know) about her, but Mr Minister I know who is polluting your mind,” tweeted Akhtar. “Mr Minister, you have condemned the Left by falsely accusing them of celebrating soldier’s killing, and not

a word about ABVP. Grossly biased,” said Akhtar, who has often spoken out in favour of freedom of expression in the country. Kaur, a student of Delhi’s Lady Sri Ram College, had posted on Facebook a picture of herself holding a placard that said, “I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me”, following last week’s violence in Ramjas College in Delhi University. The post went viral with hundreds of shares. She also held a poster, saying ‘Pakistan did not kill my dad, war killed him’.
